Sin City – Friday, 9.30pm GO
Iggy and the Stooges – Ready To Die Out Now
rom the pages of graphic novelist Frank Miller’s (‘300’) greatest work, comes this stylish yet brutishly violent screen adaptation co-directed by Miller, Robert Rodriguez (‘Planet Terror’, ‘El Mariachi) and with a “special” directorial appearance by Quentin Tarantino (‘Django Unchained’). Taking a slice from the graphic novel series, ‘Sin City’ consists of four tales that focus around a muscular brute, Marv (Mickey Rourke), who’s on the hunt for the people responsible for the death of his beloved Goldie; a hitman (Josh Hartnett) looking to make a bit of extra cash; a cop (Bruce Willis) who risks his life to protect a girl from a deformed pedophile and a man (Clive Owen) fed up with Sin City’s corrupt law enforcement who takes the law into his own hands after a horrible mistake. Visceral and original, this pulpinspired neo-noir is not for the feint of heart but if you have the stomach for such fare, you will be rewarded.

erennial punk rocker Iggy Pop could pretty much do anything – release an album of him burping the alphabet for example – and it would still be a testament to his longevity after way too many years of espousing a “lust for life”. While this set is obviously never going to live up to such incendiary and goalpost shifting first three Stooges albums – ‘The Stooges’, ‘Fun House’ and ‘Raw Power’, there’s still a lot of life in these old dogs yet. Guitarist James Williamson, who left the band after laying down some of the most ferocious licks ever committed to tape on ‘Raw Power’, is back in the fold and his presence is definitely felt – particularly on the album’s opener ‘Burn’ and the swaggering title track. Sure, it’s no ‘Raw Power’ and any newcomers would probably do themselves a disservice by latching onto this one as a first taste, but ‘Ready Or Die’ is still a worthy addition to the canon.

here’s no doubt that the third instalment of the Iron Man franchise has been one of the most anticipated releases of the year and, despite the hoopla machine working overtime in preparation, this one delivers on many levels. Brilliant industrialist and saver of worlds, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), barely has time to scratch himself before he is thrust into the mother of all battles with the terrorist The Mandarin (played with aplomb by Sir Ben Kingsley, although fans of the comic may question this arch villain’s entry into the franchise) and scientist-gonebonkers Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce). After his world is destroyed by his foes, Stark must rely on his ingenuity and an amazing array of Iron Man suits (seriously, the final battle is just jawdropping) to overcome evil. Much of the success of this film, and indeed the franchise, is its reliance on credible (within the realm of the superhero) scripts and great character development that isn’t restricted to the protagonist.

n just a few short years, New Jersey’s The Gaslight Anthem have gone from knockabout punk rock bruisers to one of the most prolific and celebrated rock acts around. The band first came to the world’s attention with their debut ‘Sink or Swim’ that caused a bit of a ripple, but it wasn’t until the release of their sophomore effort ‘The 59 Sound’ that the pundits and the public alike really started to take notice. The album caused wags to hurl compliments at the band like “one of the greatest rock albums ever crafted”. Subsequent albums ‘American Slang’ and their latest ‘Handwritten’ have cemented this band as one of the true forces to be reckoned with. With a sound that embraces the old school New Jersey punk of The Misfits and the Bouncing Souls, The Gaslight Anthem have seamlessly melded a kind of working-class folk aesthetic to create something truly memorable.

t may’ve been a long time between drinks for Perth-born indie kids Sons of Rico, with their debut album ‘Reactions’ dropping in 2010, but the band has hit back with their more focused follow-up with arguably the greatest album title in recent memory, ‘In Rico Glaciers’. The band are currently smack bang in the middle of their album tour and frontman Alex MacRae told TE that their travels had been going swimmingly. “Yeah, we’re literally right in the middle of it and all of the shows have been going really well,” he said. “It’s really positive to see people coming up after the shows telling us how much they enjoyed the new stuff – it’s really encouraging.” Given that Sons Of Rico’s drummer, Adam Weston, also looks after rhythm duties for Perth indie rock darlings Birds of Tokyo, one could forgive the band for taking their time getting album number two into the ether. “We do have to be super organised,” he said. “It was funny actually, Adam was over in the States recording with Birds and as soon as he got back we went straight into the studio.” This time around the band went for a more focused approach than the debut.
“It was a different process as I moved to Brisbane with the sole purpose of writing the record,” he said. “With the new album, we had much more of a definite path to go down and much more of a fully-realised end vision than we did on the first one. “We really wanted to keep it positive and fun in the delivery – I think we did
LAke MAcqUARIe TAveRN
achieve that on the first record, but it was kind of by accident. The first album was kind of like us testing the waters, so to speak, and me finding my voice and strengths as a songwriter.” The band enlisted the services of Brisbane-based producer Magoo to help get the best out of their sound that is full of a muscular rock aesthetic but tempered
by a disarming pop simplicity. “He really made everything shiny,” he said. “We spent a lot more time recording this one and Magoo definitely brought all of his studio nerdiness to it.” Catch Sons of Rico when they wrap up their ‘In Rico Glaciers’ tour at the Great Northern Hotel on Saturday, May 4.

f you’re going to interview legendary punk agitator Jello Biafra, you had better come prepared because this is one guy that definitely has a lot to say. Biafra, who attained punk rock icon status with seminal San Francisco hardcore outfit Dead Kennedys, will be in the country with his new outfit (his first band since Dead Kennedys disbanded in 1986), Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School Of Medicine, later this month and he told TE he hoped for a smoother run this time around than when Dead Kennedys toured here (including a nowmythical set at the Bel Air Hotel) in 1983.

“I didn’t think it would be this long but I went on so many other adventures, good and bad, but I’m glad I’ve finally got another band of my own going,” Biafra said. “The only real road trip I have been able to take down there was on the ’83 tour because we had some downtime after [Dead Kennedys drummer] DH Pilegro was arrested on the street after our Brisbane show for drinking while black. All of [Aussie punks] The Johnnies were drinking with him too but he was the only one arrested and then [Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay] Ray asked the police what was happening and they threw him in the car too and they didn’t get out until the next day. It became a bit of a media circus and I got a little too

acquainted with the legacy of [former Queensland Premier] Joe BjelkePeterson.” While Biafra’s output with the Dead Kennedys exists only across four albums (‘Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables’, ‘Plastic Surgery Disasters’, ‘Frankenchrist’, ‘Bedtime For Democracy’) and one EP (‘In God We Trust Inc’) there’s no denying his influence on politically-charged punk. Dead Kennedys disbanded in 1986 after Biafra was put on trial thanks to an image by artist H.R Geiger that was inserted in the sleeve of their ‘Frankenchrist’ set (Biafra talks about this at length in his spoken word set ‘High Priest of Harmful Matter’), yet Biafra has well and truly kept his hand in with a
healthy canon of spoken word albums and numerous collaborations with the likes of No Means No, Al Jourgensen, DOA, Mojo Nixon and the Melvins. Now, some 27 years after saying goodbye to the Dead Kennedys, (something the other members cannot seem to do), Biafra is back with his latest outfit and upon hearing the first bars of their latest album ‘White People and The Damage Done’ it’s obvious that, at 55, Biafra has lost none of his vitriol. While the album could be categorised as a searing indictment of post-Bush America, Biafra insists that nothing has really changed. “I really think that we’re still in Bush America,” he said. “Or, more to the point, Regan America because this slow, ongoing corporate

bothering to bring any of the banks to justice and number two, and worse is that none of the war criminals from the Bush regime have been brought to justice. Why no Nuremburg for Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleezza Rice, Paul Wolfowitz – the further down that chain you go the worse it gets.” Given that Biafra is one of the most revered figures (alongside the likes of Ian MacKaye and Henry Rollins) in American hardcore, and also one of its biggest iconoclasts, does this juxtaposition make him ill at ease? “It’s an honour – I mean all of those people are my friends – and I think in a lot of cases, in all of us maybe, it was both having a deep set of beliefs in our heart and soul, even before we were ever in bands and also a really strong work ethic, especially on Henry’s part

retro cash machine. It also puts more pressure on me in a way because if I’m going to live up to this silly legend then I’d better be good – no phoney Dead Kennedys reunions where Ray, Klaus and DH don’t even bother to practice and all they’re into is the money – I’m not interested in that. I mean, it’s got to be the kind of show that I want to see as a fan. “One of the people who set the bar really high for that [GSM], wasn’t just the revived Stooges, but when I saw the first ever Radio Birdman show in San Franciso a few years ago – I was expecting something pretty good, but they tore the roof off and Deniz Tek was putting his whole body into his guitar just like a twenty-year-old in a hardcore band without missing a note. Me and Mike Fox, who was one of the guitarists in the Dwarves, just looked at each other and said, ‘Yeah, this is the sh*t – this is what older people playing younger people’s music should be’.” Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine will be playing at The Cambridge Hotel on Sunday, May 19.

coup that has been going on all over the world, started somewhere around then and America is basically a one-party state masquerading as a two-party state – the Emeperors are the corporate party and we’ve been fed various flavours of Regan in the White House ever since, and sadly that very much includes the Barackstar. “The ultra rich and the corporations are putting the peddle to the metal to accelerate the pace of the corporate coup and expect us somehow to like it. So when people ask me what I think the worst problem in the world is – is it climate collapse? Is it war? I say no, it’s corruption because that’s what’s preventing the most positive action on all these fronts even when the survival of the planet is at stake. I mean the planet will survive, but will mammals survive? Or are we going to be back down to cockroaches being the Mad Max’s of our own territory?” Given the hoopla surrounding Obama’s 2008 Presidential campaign, you could be forgiven for thinking that Biafra was disheartened that so many people “drank the Kool Aid” so to speak, but he said he saw it coming a mile off. “I’d been keeping an eye on his voting record in the Senate and he voted the way Bush wanted him to an alarmingly high amount of the time,” he said. “It’s really sad because he is an electrifying speaker, of course, and I see him talk and he comes across as a really cool guy who actually gets it – someone I’d love to hang out with – but then, back into the bowels of the power structure he goes and Guantanamo Bay is still open, drones are killing people all over the world and they’re getting ready to use them in the United States. I think the two biggest crimes of the Barackstar administration are number one – not

ffinity is the latest duo to hit the scene and already they’ve proven they have what it takes to help you forget about the week that was. Affinity is comprised of singing sensation Karissa Richards who has been performing professionally for the past eight years, and James Peacock on guitar and backing vocals, who has been an active member of the Newcastle music scene for the past 12 years, most notably with local powerhouse Clockwork. With a set-list that reads like a greatest hits of the past 40 years (think the likes of Lady Gaga, The Supremes, ABBA, Sam and Dave, Kings of Leon, Queen and Jason Mraz) these human jukeboxes definitely run the gamut. Catch Affinity when they play at West Wallsend Workers Club on Friday, May 3.

hile Welsh post-hardcore band Funeral For A Friend have added many more sonic arrows to their quiver since they released their fearsome debut ‘Casually Dressed and Deep in Coversation’ in 2003, with subsequent albums incorporating emo and alt rock influences into their aggressive sound, their latest long player ‘Conduit’ represents a harkening back to the heavier side of things as punters are sure to find out when the band hits Newcastle next week. “We just can’t wait to get back to Australia – we’ve obviously been down there a bunch of times and it’s almost like a holiday for us,” guitarist Gavin Burrough told TE. Having spent the majority of 2012 working on the album, the result, according to Burrough, is a much more cohesive and rawer effort than their last set, ‘Welcome Home Armageddon’. “It’s been great to see the album get such a good reception because it’s always hard to know how it’s going to be perceived,” he said. “It definitely is a rawer album, but that’s kind of how it just panned out – it
wasn’t a conscious decision. “A lot of the last album was about bouncing ideas back and forth via email and the like and not much rehearsal, but this time, we really got into rehearsal and we found that we just kept stripping things back and back.” Burrough said that another reason for this re-found aggression was the inclusion of new drummer Pat Lundy (formerly of metallers Rise To Remain) after long-serving drummer Ryan Richards left in 2012. “Pat is just awesome,” Burrough said. “He really is a prodigy on the drums and he really has brought a whole new element to the band and we’re really happy to have him with us.” With pundits referring to Funeral For A Friend as one of the most influential bands of their generation, you could forgive the band for having their heads in the clouds just a tad – but, it couldn’t be further from the truth. “Stuff like that is really nice to hear but for us it’s just about loving what we do and putting on the best shows we can. I guess the main reason we continue to do it is quite selfish, really – we just love it and as long as people are having a good time and we’re having fun, we’ll continue to do it.” Catch Funeral For A Friend when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday, May 10.

When it comes to live music, there’s no denying that Newcastle has its fair share of quality performers. To make the most of this fact, the Shaft Tavern has kicked off its Sunday Afternoon Sessions which will showcase the best rock, blues and alternative music the region has to offer in a relaxed and chilled out atmosphere. Shaft Tavern Manager Alisha Byrnes said the Sunday Afternoon Sessions were a great way for people to recover from a hectic weekend and prepare for the week ahead. “It’s a great atmosphere here at the Shaft and the Sunday Sessions are a great way for people to wind down from the week and warm up for winter with some great live music,” she said. Some of the talent slated to perform at the Sunday Sessions includes The Smarts, Rubber Bullet, Flying Mare (pictured) and Rock Factor. The Sunday Sessions program will continue throughout winter, starts every Sunday at 4pm and will provide you with three hours of great quality entertainment. Aside from the Sunday Sessions, the Shaft Tavern has plenty for you to enjoy, such as their Happy Hour wheel spin, poker and pool comps and Mexican night ($15 with a free Corona) on Wednesday nights, the mega meat raffles and $10 schnitzel night on Thursday night and live footy on Monday and Sunday. There truly is something for everyone at the Shaft. For more information about what’s on the agenda for the Shaft Tavern’s Sunday Afternoon Sessions, phone the venue on 4951 4666.
A new-look FridAy night When you think of a Friday night of entertainment, things like heading out for a meal, catching a film or going to see a live band might come to mind. However, staff at the Shaft Tavern have been thinking outside of the square and have come up with a refreshingly original Friday night that is sure to satisfy even the most cynical punter. The venue will be hosting an exotic dancers night, courtesy of Tessabella Promotions and manager bourbon and prizes are also on offer. Alisha Byrnes said the nights would alternate For more information, phone the Shaft Tavern between burlesque dancing, pole dancing and on 4951 4666. funk dancing. She said they represented a bit of a first for the region and they intended to capitalise on the growing popularity, particularly of burlesque and pole dancing, as both a form of entertainment and a form of exercise. “Things like burlesque dancing are becoming more and more popular with both women and men and this idea is something a little bit different – I’d say we’d be one of the first venues in the area to provide a night like this. A great night of entertainment that is also performance art. Local turntablist DJ 2Me will be providing the tunes and, as an added bonus, promotional waitresses From Left: Tess Flynn from Tessabella Promotions and Alisha Byrnes, Shaft Tavern Manager will also be selling $20 buckets of Ruski or

ith a new live album dropping today, a European tour for later in the year squared away, and a healthy calendar of gigs on home soil, Newcastle’s very own sonic acrobat Fox Control (aka Huw Jones) certainly has a lot to crow about. Fox Control came to life, essentially, last year with the release of his jaw-dropping and eclectic self-titled EP that caught the ears of taste-makers around the country with the EP debuting at number one on the iTunes charts upon its release. For the uninititated, this guy gives new meaning to the term, ‘one-man band’. Jones as Fox Control lovingly loops live guitar with electronic samples, loops and break-beats to create a refreshingly original mash-up that has splashes of latin/blues/roots and electronica. A heady gumbo indeed. Incorporating visuals on stage, a Fox Contol show is a sight to behold and punters can now get a small taste of that live experience with the new iTunes-only album, ‘Sampler’. “The album was recorded across two shows from my ‘End Of Summer’ tour, last year,” Jones explained. “I think it really shows how far the show has developed over the past 12 months and I’m very proud of the result.” While more and more bands are turning to crowd sourcing to fund their dreams of putting their music to tape, Jones has taken this idea one step further by turning to his fans to help book gigs. The idea is that anyone “wanting a little extra gravy”
and can manage to book a gig for Fox Control can take a share of the spoils, such as a percentage of the fee. Jones said that he was overwhelmed with the response he had received when putting the word out for the European tour. “It’s just been awesome,” he said. “I have 10 European shows booked at the end of the year and, realistically, I could’ve played a show every day as there were a couple of people who really went hard on the idea. I am travelling with my wife and we are planning on doing a bit of sightseeing as well, so it probably wasn’t the best idea to be playing every day.” In keeping with his need to constantly produce new material, Jones said he planned to head back into the studio early next year. “I really do feel that I need to keep producing new music because there is a kind of a fear that if I don’t record I’ll forget...so there’ll definitely be a new album next year.” Catch Fox Control at the Lass O’Gowrie on Thursday, May 9.

sold-out crowd packed into Maitland Showground on Saturday for the first of the 2013 Groovin’ The Moo festivals, and a solid line-up of locals, nationals and internationals proved that Maitland can well and truly hold its own on the Oz festival scene. Easily my biggest regret of the day was missing Brooklyn indie pop duo Matt and Kim as tales of the early starters solid set and crazy stage antics (including drummer Kim Schifino walking on the outstretched hands of the solid crowd in what would have been a truly memorable festival moment). I did however manage LA punk rockers The Bronx and they definitely didn’t disappoint. The band ripped through a high energy set, with plenty of rock swagger that included cuts from all four of their albums (their Mariachi El Bronx sets notwithstanding) with standouts being the killer ‘White Tar’ from their first album and ‘Pilot Light’ from their latest. Next up on my festival adventure was Melbourne hip-hopper Seth Sentry, and, while not normally
a fan of the genre, this guy really impressed with a slew of hits including ‘The Waitress Song’ and ‘Float Away’. The way Sentry held the crowd in the palm of his hand was memorable. Scottish indie rockers Frightened Rabbit were a true highlight of the day with a tubthumping set that really got the crowd moving, but by the time Aussie festival stalwarts Regurgitator hit the stage, proceedings really kicked into overdrive. People seemed to come from nowhere to watch The ‘Gurge’s’ flat-out set that ran the gamut of their entire career – a short sharp blast of disco/punk/ indie/pop that was a worthy addition to the bill. One of the best of the day. Being a long-time fan of the kooky pop stylings of They Might Be Giants, I was a bit unsure as to how this crowd would take to their eclectic sound. However, my fears were quickly allayed as they, and their super cute “special guests”, the puppets, The Avatars of They, proved to be one of the hits of the festival. Despite singer Kevin Sheilds’ voice blowing out and cutting their set short, psych rockers Tame Impala delivered a lush and swirling set that will live long in this reviewer’s memory. The sight of pretty much everyone in attendance singing along to ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ was definitely one to behold.

fter suffering the tragic and unexpected loss of both of his parents within hours of each other last year, Irish bel canto tenor Tommy Fleming, also known as ‘the voice of Ireland’, quite understandably needed some time out to reflect on his life and career. The result of this self-reflection led to what Fleming told TE was “his most cathartic album to date” – ‘Begin’ – which has just been released in Australia. For the past 20 years, Fleming has been mesmerising audiences with a
voice that has prompted guitar God Eric Clapton to proclaim that Fleming’s version of the traditional Irish classic was “The best version of ‘Danny Boy’ – bar none”, while Bishop Desmond Tutu insists that Fleming’s voice is “truly an instrument of passion.” His talent hasn’t gone unnoticed with the record-buying public either, with his pervious 11 albums raking in more than 1.5 million in sales. Catch Tommy Fleming when he performs at Wests Lambton on Saturday, May 4.

fter wowing the Australian punters with her talents in the early naughties indie band, george, then later with The Captains, Paul Grobowski, the jazz combo Eixir and an operatic tilt with her mother, there’s no denying that Katie Noonan is one of the most eclectic artists in the business. Now, Noonan is in the middle of a national tour to promote her latest album – ‘Songbook’ – which revisits much of her past work, along with five new tracks, with stark instrumentation and that beautiful mesmeric voice. The Songbook tour will show Noonan at her most personal and
sublime, with each song’s origin and inspiration explored onstage. Fans will delve deeper into the songs they know and understand the background stories that accompany the sheet music. According to Noonan, Songbook explores “the last 15 years of my life. It has been really interesting going through these works and seeing my evolution as a musician – my journey from a girl to a young woman to a wife and mother.” Katie Noonan will be bringing her Songbook tour to Lizotte’s Lambton on Sunday, May 5.

The emphasis for this show will be on the sisters’ extraordinary harmonies and the girls will also take audiences through their career on a musical journey that will include more than a few humorous stories about their amazing ride to date. “We’ve been touring non-stop for the past six years and it’s always been a high energy show,” Brooke McClymont said. “We thought we’d change it up a bit by stripping everything back and letting people hear our voices in a more personal setting.” Catch The McClymonts when they bring their ‘Acoustic Harmony’ tour to Wests Lambton on Friday, May 17. s Aussie country music darlings The McClymonts release their third single – the title track – from their latest album ‘Two Worlds Collide’, the sisterly trio have announced a series of intimate acoustic shows that will bring them, once again, to Newcastle. Brooke, Samantha and Mollie will be performing songs from their latest chartclimbing set and all of the songs fans have been requesting online is a show that will cover the girls’ musical history, right back to when they released their first EP in 2006. “People always tell us they just want to sit back and listen to our harmonies, so that’s what we’re doing,” Samantha McClymont said. “We want to create a more intimate vibe.” This will be a rare opportunity for audiences to experience the girls in a way they have never seen them before.
