ritten and directed by Joseph Kosinski (‘Tron Legacy’), this latest Tom Cruise vehicle is a rather slow burning and subdued sci-fi affair and, whilst visually stunning, this is more Stanley Kubrick than Michael Bay. ‘Oblivion’ is set in the not-toodistant future on a ruined earth after an alien invasion, which the humans fended off, left the planet almost uninhabitable. Ex-marine Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) are the last humans on earth and are tasked with monitoring and repairing the automated drones that scoot about the place, defending earth’s remaining resources which the humans, now living on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, are protecting from the roaming alien scavengers, or “Scavs”. Kosinski’s dystopian vistas are truly impressive, but if you’re looking for action, you may be disappointed.
f you like your tunes on the more psychedelic side of things, with equal parts euphoric highs and melancholic lows, then you are going to flip your wig over Western Australian outfit Pond’s latest album, ‘Hobo Rocket’ Essentially the little cousins of Perth juggernaut Tame Impala (with most of the members of TI at one point taking up duties in Pond), Pond grab you by the scruff of the neck, right from the fuzzed out and cymbal heavy opener, ‘Xan Man’, and never let you go. The opener bristles with an angular intensity that recalls Roky Erikson and his more adventurous outings with the psych legends, the 13th Floor Elevators. This is one of those albums that might be described as a difficult listen, but if you are a little more adventurous in your tastes and willing to do a bit of digging, there is some true sonic gold to be found on this gem. ‘Hobo Rocket’ is chock-a-block full of fuzzed-out sonic goodness that will leave you reeling.

hile never holding a candle to the 1971 adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, starring the irrepressible Gene Wilder as the ubiquitous Willy Wonka, Tim Burton’s interpretation offers up a few twisted tweaks to make things interesting. In case you’re not au fait with the story, Willy Wonka, owner of the greatest chocolate factory on earth, releases five golden tickets to his beloved factory in five separate chocolate bars and, understandably, chaos ensues amongst the children of the world. The fifth and final ticket is awarded to Charlie Bucket and, with his grandfather, he joins the rest of the winning children to experience the most amazing chocolate factory, ever. Burton brings his usual eye for set design to proceedings so you can be assured of a visual feast but, there seems to be something almost sinister lurking beneath the surface that was missing in the original.

ack in the mid-eighties, you couldn’t even think about synthpop without Aussie new-wavers Pseudo Echo leaping into your mind. Now, almost thirty years since they released their seminal slice of Aussie new-wave, ‘Autumnal Park’, Pseudo Echo are as strong as ever and still filling dance-floors (as Newcastle punters are sure to discover when the band swings by Lizotte’s this month) with their almost unavoidably danceable brand of pop, epitomised in such smash hits as ‘Funky Town’, ‘A Beat For You’ and ‘Love an Adventure’. Frontman Brian Canham told TE that the prospect of hitting the road with Pseudo Echo was something that still excited him, even after all these years. “Yeah, it’s been a while since we’ve played Newcastle and it’s always good to get to the more regional centres,” he said. “But the thing is, I still just really love getting out there with the band. I mean, I do a lot of other stuff now – working with other artists, soundtrack and jingle work, but stepping on that stage with such a great band is just something else.” Best known for their brilliant reinterpretation of the Lipps Inc disco track ‘Funky Town’, Pseudo Echo, with their ‘Smash Hits’-ready image and
swooping synths, were a refreshing antidote to the pub rock of Chisel, the Oils and the Angels that were dominating the Oz music scene at the time. “I’d been playing in bands since I was around 14 – I always took it seriously and I was always looking for something new,” Canham said. “In high school, when I met [original

guitarist] Pierre Pierre and the other guys, I knew that there was something substantial going on. “But when we finally met [original keyboard player] Tony Lugton, I thought, ‘This is the sound I’ve been looking for for so long’, and it really was a big point of difference to the stuff that the pub rock bands were doing with all of our keys and synths.”
Undoubtedly best known for ‘Funky Town’, Canham said the song almost never came to fruition, although there may’ve been a few people eating a healthy serve of humble pie when it did. “It’s quite funny actually, the song came about almost as a p**s take,” he said. “It had been stuck in my mind since I was a kid and it had a profound effect on me. “Years later, the band were at a friend’s house with a huge vinyl collection and he started playing the song and we thought, ‘Why not give it a go?’ So, we jammed on it a couple of times in sound check and one night we threw it in a set as an encore or something, and the crowd went wild. So, we approached the label and they weren’t keen, the US label said it was a crap idea, so I decided to produce it myself and the rest, as they say, is history.” Definitely not ones to rest on their laurels, Pseudo Echo are currently in the process of recording a new album and if their last two singles, ‘Suddenly Silently’ and ‘Fighting The Tide’, are anything to go by, then it should be a doozy. “Yes, I’m pleased to say that a new Pseudo Echo album is definitely on the cards – were just ironing a few things out business-wise, but we’re hoping for it to be out by the end of the year.” Catch Pseudo Echo when they play at Lizotte’s Lambton on Friday, August 9.

the Australian Blues and Roots chart, Stormcellar have achieved international recognition with chart positions in France, Canada and in the US on the National Blues charts and Roots Report. Formed in 2007, these guys are not afraid to put themselves out there with more than 300 gigs under their collective belt, at the time of writing. Over their last five releases, the band have touched on pretty much every sound in the blues/roots/country/folk spectrum, and their persistence in not settling into one specific genre has kept them sounding as fresh as ever. Comprised of MJEB on harmonica and vocals, Mr Wizard on guitars, bass and mandolin, Rosie on electric and acoustic guitars and Theo on drums, Stormcellar bring a lot of influences to the table, ranging from modern indie, J and K pop, convict bush ballads, dubstep and even a splash of Mongolian Khyrga. Why the insistence on the nicknames? Well as their PR succinctly points out, “the band and associated all have nicknames because we liked Canned Heat and they all had nicknames and we’re in a band too. Nicknames are neat. Also, it seems that everyone we know that is not called Theo or Paul is a Michael, or a Carl, or a Bill.” Well, fair enough. The lads’ latest long player, their fourth, ‘Hired Guns & Borrowed Glory’, has been pricking up quite a few ears around the country as well as abroad, so you’d do well to get along to Stockton RSL on Friday, August 9 and check them out.

hile he is perhaps best known to the majority of Australians as the muttonchopped singer who, thanks to brilliant renditions of such rockers as the Stones’ ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ and the Sam and Dave’s ‘Hold On, I’m Comin’ on season two of ‘The Voice’, Simon Meli is also the frontman of rock and soul revivalists The Widowbirds, who are set to blow the doors off the Cambridge when they hit town this week. While Meli’s profile had been raised quite considerably since the Voice, The Widowbirds had already been pricking up quite a few ears both here and abroad – not least for their barnstormirng live show, but also for their muscular debut album, ‘Shenandoah’. Meli, who became transfixed by the lure of rock and roll thanks to his father’s record collection, (Ike and Tina Turner in particular), said that punters could expect nothing short of a swaggering rock and soul extravaganza when they hit town. he refresh button on Lauren Wheatley’s browser window definitely got a decent workout last week. The Newcastle-based singer/ songwriter wasn’t waiting to see how many likes she received on her latest Facebook post, but rather how far up the charts her debut single, ‘Overrated’, had shot. Released digitally last Tuesday, the almost impossibly catchy country-pop tune climbed to a respectable number 12 on the iTunes Country chart within hours of its release, placing the up-and-coming Wheatley amid such formidable company as Lady Antebellum and Keith Urban. “It’s just been so exciting,” a bubbly Wheatley told TE. “I’ve been constantly checking the charts all day today, hitting refresh again and again. “I just can’t believe it’s doing so well.” Co-written by Wheatley, Joel Black and one-third of country sensations The McClymonts, Mollie McClymont, ‘Overrated’ is a classic country pop-tune, complete with some truly lush production a well-honed pop sensibility and some dynamic vocals from Wheatley.
“The song is about letting someone you love leave and knowing that they’ll come back to you one day. “We all sat down and wrote it one sunny day at the end of last year and we basically just buckled down for the day and got all of our thoughts and emotions out there and put them into song.” Wheatley, who has been performing in various guises for the past ten years, said she felt that this year was the right time to have a decent crack at the singersongwriter thing. “I’ve been performing pretty much my whole life – it’s all I’ve ever known and all I’ve ever wanted to do,” she said. “I’ve gone through a few different genres in my musical life, just trying to find my way, but as soon as I found country, I was home. I’m just loving being able to get those beautiful country tones and still that pop sense of a nice singalong chorus and an energy within the pop. “But music has always been a part of my life – I’ve gone through the dance world, I’ve gone through the musical theatre world and I’ve always wanted to get to that point where I can create my own music and this has just happened to be the year – I’m giving it my absolute all.” Catch Lauren Wheatley, with full band, when she launches ‘Overrated’ at the Lambton Park Hotel on Friday, August 16.

A formidable talent

hen it comes to enthusiastic young musicians doing their thing around the traps, they don’t come much more so than Central Coast-based singer/guitarist Howard Shearman. In the short time Shearman has been plying his musical trade, he has recorded two EPs and shared stages with a number of Aussie music luminaries such as Jon Stevens (Noisworks), James Reyne (Australian Crawl) and Rai Thistlewayte (Thirsty Merc), to name but a few. After clocking up gigs in more than 100 different venues, there’s no doubt that Shearman has developed the chops to entertain any audience. f you haven’t been up the northern end of Beaumont Street for a while, it might well be time for a visit. The Sydney Junction Hotel has undergone a bit of a rebrand recently, transforming into Newcastle’s newest LGBTIQ venue – complete with drag queen trivia on Tuesday nights and its very own nightclub, Unity. Although the crowd may be changing at SJs, one thing has remained the same – the hotel’s reputation for delicious food. With my dining partner in tow, I dropped into SJs’ restaurant over the weekend for a Friday night feed. We walked in to find the restaurant buzzing with old locals and young families, as well a few of the younger crowd who have more recently made the hotel a regular haunt.
The friendly staff showed us to our table and we ordered up a couple of starters to kick off the night, sweet chilli cheese bread with honey and a dozen mixed oysters. Sweet chilli cheese bread has always been a favourite of mine, and this one was up there with the best; lightly toasted and crisp on the outside, yet light and fluffy on the inside and the added honey gives it an extra hint of sweetness. The oysters – natural, kilpatrick and mornay – were ocean fresh and delicious. For mains, at the chef’s suggestion I feasted on a massive portion of chicken cordon bleu served with hearty winter greens and mashed potato, while my dining partner chose a pub classic, surf and turf with chips and salad – always a winner and this was no different. The Sydney Junction Hotel is open every day for lunch and dinner. Late lunches are available from Wednesday to Sunday.

were capable of on the EP, ‘Sleep In The Water’ shows the band in full flight – their subtle, almost other-worldly sounds create layers upon layers that almost demand repeat listens. If you’ve heard the two singles already released – ‘Hung On Tight’ and ‘Ghost’, you’ll know the score – these guys have the whole ethereal pop with lush harmonies thing down pat. Heathcliff said that it was the band’s intention, right from the outset, to create an album full of texture and light and shade, but he added that the inclusion of Evermore drummer Dann Hume to produce the sessions helped immeasurably in creating the expansive sonic palate. “Dann is just a brilliant producer, and I think the album definitely reflects that,” Heathcliff said. “He really brought out the best in us and pushed us to our absolute limits. “We spent about four months recording in Gisbourne and in that time, Dan also became a really good friend. fter taking out the Triple J Unearthed High competition in 2011, this Melbourne dream pop outfit have certainly made their presence felt with their critically acclaimed, self-titled EP. The debut release of ‘Snakadaktal’ garnered some pretty respectable airplay on Triple J and reached an impressive number 26 on the digital ARIA charts. Now, the band are on the cusp of going a step further with their intricately layered and spacious debut album, ‘Sleep In The Water’, and frontman Sean Heathcliff told TE that the band could now breathe a collective sigh of relief seeing that the album was out in the ether. “Yes, it’s incredibly exciting and there are a few nerves floating around as well, although I have to say that we’re not really too worried about how critics see the album...for us it’s more about what our friends and family think because they are definitely our biggest supporters.” While there were glimpses of what Snakadaktal

“It’s been very humbling.” Crazy Old Maurice’s new single ‘This Broken Town’ is described as “a song that dwells on Caitlin’s warring memories of growing up in Newcastle”. “It’s all about looking back at my memories of Newcastle growing up – you know, like counting all the ships coming in the harbour – and how things have changed today. fter playing their first show as high school students, performing in front of family and friends in 2009, Sydney-based indie rock outfit Glass Towers certainly haven’t looked back ever since. While a high school gig seems an appropriate first show for a burgeoning band, Glass Towers were welland-truly thrown into the deep end with their second show – playing at a little festival called ‘Splendour in the Grass’. “Yeah, Splendour was pretty crazy, considering it was only our second show,” frontman Ben Hannam told TE. “The show before that was just in front of friends and family, so to be playing Splendour, second show in, was just a massive mind trip.” After two critically acclaimed EPs in the Wayne Connolly-produced ‘What We Were, When We Were’ and 2012’s ‘Collarbone Jungle’, the band is currently riding high on the back of their debut long player – a paean to the wonders of teenagehood, ‘Halcyon Days’.
Produced by JP Fung (Silverchair, Josh Pyke, Art Vs Science, Bluejuice), who also worked with the band on ‘Collarbone Jungle’, ‘Halcyon Days’ represents a bit of a sonic shift, with the band aiming for, and squarely hitting, a much fuller sound than on previous efforts. “Basically, with the first EP, working with Wayne Connolly was great – he was a really intuitive producer and he gave us a great education about the recording process,” Hannam said. “We had been going for a bit more of a lo-fi surf kind of sound in the past and, for this record, we wanted a much more layered and lush sounding album. “JP was just the perfect choice for that kind of sound because he is just an absolute legend at pulling those big sounds.” Lyrically, Hannam said the album was an exploration of youth from the point of view of someone standing on the precipice of adulthood. “The album is your invitation back into the heady rush of teenage days,” he said. “The whole album is a form of dedication to that period of my life – my ‘Halcyon Days’.” Catch Glass Towers when they play at the Small Ballroom on Wednesday, August 14.

hen Sydney sextet Moving Pictures released their debut album, ‘Days of Innocence’ back in 1980, it set the Australian charts on fire. The album was the fourth most popular album of the year, beaten only by Men at Work’s ‘Business as Usual’, the Human League’s ‘Dare’ and the ‘Chariots of Fire’ soundtrack, and spent seven weeks at the top of the Aussie charts, not to forget spawning the classic, ‘What About Me’. Now, 30 years after the influential album’s release, Moving Pictures are hitting the road once again and singer Alex Smith couldn’t be happier. “We’re all looking forward to it, absolutely,” Smith told TE from his London home. “Some people have asked me, ‘How will you feel getting back on stage again?’ and the main thing I can remember about Moving Pictures is just laughing all the time with the guys, we had an absolute blast and I basically lived for those two hours onstage every night.”

As fun as the ride may’ve been, Smith said there was still a sense of unfinished business when it came to Moving Pictures. On the back of the runaway success of ‘What About Me’, the band was signed to Elektra. A US tour, opening for the likes of REO Speedwagon, Tom Petty and Hall and Oats was planned – right before Elektra collapsed, leaving the band high and dry. “Yeah, there kind of is a sense of unfinished business, particularly as the years go by,” Smith said. “It really was like a house of cards tumbling down and it was during a period in the ’80s where the industry became very wrapped up in itself and spat out a lot of bands, not just us.” That’s not to say Smith is bitter about his time with the band; in fact, if he had his time again, he would still do it all the same. “Back then, I used to think I was the luckiest guy in the world, getting to make music with these guys. Now, having the opportunity to do it again, I know I really am lucky.” Catch Moving Pictures when they play at Lizotte’s on Thursday, August 15 and Friday, August 16.
