irected by Brett Ratner (‘Red Dragon’, ‘Horrible Bosses’), this third installment in the X-Men franchise is possibly the standout. The events of the first two films are brought to a head when a cure to treat mutations is found. This leads to strong lines being drawn amongst the X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and the Brotherhood – a band of powerful and malignant mutants led by Xavier’s former ally Magneto (Ian McKellan). Magneto decides to wage war on the humans and it’s up to the X-Men to stop the tyranny once and for all. Aussie triple-threat Hugh Jackman proves, once again, that he has the chops to carry a big budget blockbuster as the irrepressible Wolverine.

Beth Orton - Sugaring Season Anti
fter falling afoul of the world, thanks to a seemingly endless barrage of bad press, it seems that Mel Gibson may be, well not at the top, but close to the top of his game with this over-the-top action extravaganza. Gibson as the titular gringo plays an unnamed criminal who is nabbed by Mexican authorities and sent to the notorious prison, El Pueblito. Now El Pueblito is not your average correctional facility – the inmates have guns, if you have the money you can have your family come and live with you, and the whole shebang seems to be run by a dressing-gown clad crime boss, in need of a new liver, who is insistent on testing the blood of every new inmate. At first, Gibson is forced to fend for himself in this topsy-turvy hell-hole until he befriends a street-wise 10-year-old boy who helps him navigate El Pueblito. It’s then up to the Gringo to save the boy and get the hell out of dodge. Sure the plot might sound ridiculous – even wafer thin at times, but some understated “tough-guy” acting from one of the best in the business and some great action set-pieces more than make up for any other shortcomings.

t’s been some time since we’ve heard anything from Beth Orton with her last album, ‘Comfort of Strangers’ being released in 2006. However, on this, her sixth studio album, it’s like the British chanteuse never went away. The main difference here, however, is that Orton has eschewed the electronica foundations, courtesy of the likes of William Orbit, that was so evident on previous albums, for a much more soulfulfolk approach. Orton has always been a singer that wasn’t afraid to wear her emotional heart on her sleeve and that hasn’t changed in the ensuing years, especially on the beautifully arranged tracks ‘Magpie’, ‘Candles’ and ‘State of Grace’. It’s not often that an artist can release an album, after so long away from the game, that can rival earlier classic efforts. However, it seems that Beth Orton may’ve just created a record that could, quite reasonably, stand alongside her 1996 set ‘Trailer Park’.

alling all hip cats and cool kittens. It’s time to get your dancing shoes on and your hips shaking as the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies return to Australia. Brian Setzer hit big with his orchestra, David Johansen created an entire alternative career as Buster Poindexter, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy fine-tuned the genre and even Bjork had a go with ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’ becoming her biggest hit – but nobody does jumpin’ swing rock and roll as well as the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. Your ears and sneakers will never have it so good as when the Daddies break out their signature foot tapping sound featuring ear popping horns, big guitars and pop-rivet drums mixing ska, rock and swing to establish what we know and love as the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. After sold out Oz shows last year, the Daddies promised to bring their dancing frenzy moves back again – and they’ve held good on that promise. There’ll be spinning, skanking and maybe even a little striptease – after all, this is a band out to entertain. So grab a partner, your ‘Zoot Suits’ and your dancing shoes for an experience like no other when the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies swing their way back to Australia once again for what’s set to be a show not to be missed.

ritten by the grandfather of comedy in Western literature, Moliere, ‘The School For Wives’ (‘L’ecole des femmes’), is a beguiling comedy that is replete with witty repartee, hilariously misguided decisions and a delightful feeling that we should all just relax and have a wine. ‘The School For Wives’ tells the story of a man with a problem. He wants desperately to get married but is afraid that a smart woman would cheat on him. His ingenious solution? Enlist the help of a local convent to raise a girl so stupidly innocent that she wont know the first thing about cheating. In his mind she will be the ever-faithful perfect wife. Or will she? ‘The School for Wives’ is one of Moliere’s finest comedies and has been
raising eyebrows in comic disbelief since it was performed more than 350 years ago. Australian playwright Justin Flemming is translating Bell Shakespeare’s first Moliere production and he comes to the production after working extensively in theatre, musical theatre, television and cinema. Also, following on from her success with ‘Twelfth Night’ in 2010, director Lee Lewis has joined Bell Shakespeare again to direct this chaotic and turbulent love story. Lewis has worked for more than a decade in New York and has directed in Australia for STC, Griffin Theatre and Belvoir Street. Catch ‘The School For Wives’ at the Civic Theatre from Thursday, October 11 to Saturday, October 13.

BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY lake Saban, Glendon Finlay and Beau Baker, who make up Tamworth natives, the Blake Saban 3, have gradually come together over the past three Tamworth Country Music Festivals, making waves from Sydney to Byron Bay. The band’s first album, ‘City of Light’, was recorded under the guidance of veteran engineer and producer Russell Pilling (The Church, Hoodoo Gurus, The Vines) at Sydney’s Damien Gerard Studios. ‘City of Light’ pays homage to their home town, Tamworth, where the independently funded three-piece released the record at the 2012 Tamworth Country Music Festival. It’s been a busy 12 months for the boys, playing the Sydney Blues ‘n’ Roots festival last year, the Global Battle of the Bands NSW final in January and the GBOB Australasian Final in March 2012. he Hunter dancer who was among only 22 Australians to perform at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland has returned home to help the next generation of talent to prosper. Lara Tollard was recently welcomed home by her Highland dancing students, who are preparing for their special appearance at the Clan McEwan Scottish Night at the club on October 19. Assisting with the preparations are Ms Tollard’s two sisters, Hannah and Ava, who are also accomplished Highland dancers and teachers. “We have a wonderful relationship with Miss Lara and her dancing girls,” said Annette McEwan, pipe major and coordinator of the ‘Scottish Night’ event. “Their spot in our show is going to be very special.” Ms McEwan said
that while the girls viewed Lara as a role model for what she has achieved through hard work and persistence, the important message for all was to enjoy dancing. “Our first priority [is] that the children have fun with and enjoy the experience of Highland dancing and the Scottish culture, and that’s what our Scottish night is going to celebrate.” The Scottish Night with the Clan McEwan Pipe Band and Lara Tollard’s Highland Dance School is on October 19 at the Belmont 16 Ft Sailing Club. f you ever wondered what it might sound like if German chanteuse Nico ever decided to start a band with 80s British dream poppers Felt, then wonder no more dear rock and roll fantasists as Californian duo Puro Instinct have definitely got you covered. Formerly known as Pearl Harbour, founding members Piper and Skylar Kaplan began playing together in the summer of 2008 with essentially no experience and basically no idea what they were getting themselves into. After a year or so, and after deciding that this musical collaboration was something worth pursuing, they put together a band and set to work on
crafting some ethereally dreamy pop melodies, armed with a barrage of generously intertwining guitar lines, reverb-drenched vocals and some haunting and atmospheric synth lines. In their, thus far, short career, Puro Instinct have had the privilege of collaborating with pop guru Ariel Pink on the band’s breakthrough track ‘Stilyagi’ from their debut long player ‘Headbangers in Ecstacy’. Despite its title, the album recalls a very West Coast 70s vibe of bands like Fleetwood Mac and the 80s British introspectiveness of bands like the Cure and the Cocteau Twins rather than anyone that would inspire a frenetic mosh pit. Catch Puro Instinct when they play at the Terrace Bar on Wednesday, October 24.

t is a truism of popular music that some bands thrive in the studio environment while others tend to thrive in the wide open expansiveness of the road. If there’s one band that was built to be out there on the highways and byways, espousing an addictively rolling and rambling family hoedown atmosphere it’s Kiwi outfit The Eastern. The Eastern describe themselves as a “string band that roars like a punk band, that swings like a gospel band, that
drinks like a country band, that works like a bar band, that hopes like folk singers and sings love songs like union songs and wants to slow dance and dance on tables all at the same time.” Anyone that caught a set on the band’s blistering east coast tour last year can certainly attest to the fact that the aforementioned quote is not just mere PR spin. These guys are the real deal. Constantly on the road, The Eastern have shared stages and tours with the likes of Justin Townes Earle, Fleetwood

hen Sydney outfit Regular John released their lurching, swirling behemoth of a record, ‘The Peaceful Atom is a Bomb’ in 2009, they essentially blew the doors off the Aussie music scene. This ARIAnominated slab of some of the finest fuzzed-up garage rock and roll out there caused many fans and wags alike to question Regular John’s ability to back it up with another quality release. Right from the off, with the massive track ‘Sky Burial’ Regular John grab you by the jugular and never let you go with an intoxicating mix of neo70s psychedelic rock, experimental noodlings and the intensity and noisiness of iconic shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine. The band are currently in the middle
of a national tour to support the album and the guys promise to treat audiences to a “psychedelic journey through heartbroken melodies, fuzzedout guitars, kraut-inspired jams and a cosmic wall of sound”. Catch Regular John when they melt your face at The Great Northern Hotel on Friday, October 12.

t’s been quite a whirlwind 2012 thus far for Newcastle singersongwriter Bob Corbett after taking out one of the most
prestigious talent searches in the country – Toyota Star Maker. Not that that has stopped Corbett doing what he does best with his latest album and second solo effort, ‘Every Day Is A Festival’. “When I won the competition it was pretty crazy,” Corbett said.

“It was all media and adrenaline but that all kind of died down around May which gave me about a month before I headed off to the US and all the hoopla started up again. So, the only time I really had to scratch myself was May and that’s when I basically sat down and wrote the album - I switched the phones off and stole a bit of me time for myself.” Corbett said winning the competition that launched the careers of the likes of Lee Kernaghan, Keith Urban and James Blundell has had definite advantages. “It’s so clichéd, but it really does give you a foot in the door,” he said. “It still spins me out – I was just at the Gympie Music Muster a couple of weeks ago and I had a look at my media schedule and there were people on there who would’ve never taken my calls before. It’s all about gaining that access to that inner circle of the music industry. “The other thing I’ve found, after looking from the outside for so many years, I’ve always had the question, who are the goodies and who are the
baddies, but there’s no real baddies in my opinion.” Even though the new record is a solo effort, Corbett said he ended up enlisting the help of his band The Roo Grass Band on ‘Every Day Is A Festival’. “One of the difficult things I’ve found in winning Star Maker is that I won it as Bob Corbett and not as Bob Corbett and the Roo Grass Band,” he said. “With the Roo Grass Band stuff, I’m always writing with those guys in mind and winning solo meant that people wanted to put me with different musicians, but after about a week I ended up writing with them in mind anyway.” Corbett enlisted Roo Grassers Rob Long, Dave Carter and Sue Carson for the album that was produced by Nash Chambers. “I really could’ve been anyone to Nash, so I really took pains to convince him that I was in the process of establishing a brand and a sound – the Roo Grass Sound – and it would do nobody any favours if I went and made an album that sounded like I’ve been beaten into a different box. Nash took care of the rhythm section which was fine because we had Steve Fearnley who is Jimmy Barnes’ drummer and Chris Haig on Bass who harks back to the Gold Rush days with Tommy Emmanuel, so it was a real marriage between the two styles.” While Corbett has always sat quite comfortably in the country genre, with this album no exception, he said he has always been interested in pushing the boundaries. “There is a section of conservatism in country music that I always try to rebel against,” he said. “If someone tells me they don’t like the style of hat I’m wearing, I want to put three on.” Catch Bob Corbett when he releases ‘Every Day Is A Festival’ at Belmont 16s on Saturday, October 20.

f you like your comedy with a noholds-barred bent with all taboos smashed and all sacred cows slaughtered right before your very eyes, then you’d do well to get along to Newcastle Leagues Club this weekend to catch the ‘Politically Incorrect’ comedy tour. Featuring the risqué stylings of laugh merchants Chris Wainhouse (pictured), Amanda Gray, Paul Brasch and Gary Who, ‘Politically Incorrect’ comes direct from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and fresh off the back of raucous, sold-out shows in Sydney and Melbourne. The show is a three hour extravaganza that is literally jam packed with all manner of naughtiness – a show that is guaranteed to tap into
the politically incorrect nerve running through the nation’s veins and that features four of the most politically incorrect comics currently on the circuit. Each comic will be sure to test your scruples and will have you in stitches until they “get the gong” and the next comic steps up to the plate. It’s fast, it’s brilliant and it’s definitely provocative. The only question is, ‘Can you handle it?’ As the title says, this is politically incorrect comedy so, rest assured people – this one is not for the faint of heart. Catch ‘Politically Incorrect’ at the Newcastle Leagues Club on Sunday, October 14.

f it’s an honest, meat and potatoes acoustic rock and roll set dripping with jaw-dropping 12-string lead, ‘in-the-pocket’ vocal harmonies across rock, rhythm and blues, as well as a dash of folk for good measure set you’re after, then look no further than a Nick Raschke Duo show. Newcastle gig tragics will already be well aware of Raschke’s guitar acrobatics – his musical prowess is secondto-none as anyone who ever saw him slinging the axe at the old Family Hotel in the legendary Newcastle band The Slots will swear. Completing the duo is Kathy Francis – an outstanding singer and guitarist who has talent to burn and, together, they create a lush vintage sound that will, at the same time, entertain, satisfy and surprise. Charmed, I’m sure at old-school Wicko TRICIA MOROSIN
M
aking my way through the main entrance of the Wickham Park Hotel – or as the locals affectionately call it, the Wicko – I am not surprised to encounter an abundance of old-school charm, especially considering the Islington icon has been around since the 1930s. As I arrive, a band is setting up in the front room and Wicko owner, Stephen
Lawrence, tells me that live music is an important feature of the pub, with a variety of bands playing from Wednesday to Sunday. My partner and I are then led out into the beer garden, where I actually am taken aback by the expansive and modern landscaped area. With stylish long benches and wooden pylons surrounded by palm trees, it’s almost resort-style dining in this area. We start off with some cheesy garlic bread to share, however I’m wishing I opted to save belly space instead once my enormous chicken parmigiana
arrives. It’s literally huge and you can tell it’s freshly crumbed on site; complemented with creamy mash and steamed but still crisp veggies. My partner gets the rump steak with chips and salad. He tells me it’s cooked perfectly (or rather not cooked, because he likes his steak rare). Resident chef, ‘Froggie’, has been with the Wicko for years and comes out of the kitchen to ensure we’ve enjoyed the food and to tell us their summer menu – with more salad options – is on its way. All in all it’s hearty food at reasonable
prices and if you go there on one of their special nights, it’s even more cost effective – on Tuesday night it’s rump steak with salad and chips for $12 and on Wednesday and Thursday nights you can get chicken schnitzel for $12 or lamb shanks on mash for $17. Trading Hours for the Bistro: Monday to Thursday: lunch (12pm2:30pm) and dinner (5:30pm-8:30pm). Friday and Saturday: lunch (12pm3pm) and dinner (5pm-9pm). Sunday: lunch (12pm-4pm) and dinner (5pm-8:45pm). www.thewicko.com.au.

ans of the beguiling and oft-mysterious art of the sideshow can rejoice as one of the region’s foremost purveyors of the sideshow genre and most celebrated circus freak, Dangerboy, will be premiering his new show at Lizotte’s this weekend. Dubbed ‘Cabaret of the Flesh’ this one-off show will feature all manner of freakish feats that are sure to force more than one jaw to drop in amazement. For those not in the know, sideshow is essentially the poor cousin to circus as sideshows were usually secondary attractions to what was going on in the big top. Think geek shows and bearded ladies and you’re somewhere in the vicinity. “The show is all about exhibiting freaks of nature and unusual talents, much like the old sideshows of days gone by,” Dangerboy said.

“Although, ‘Cabaret of the Flesh’ steps further into discovering the inner freak of the audience. I want to challenge the audience to find beauty in places they might not have thought to look before – even within themselves. “I can guarantee that nobody will have ever seen a show quite like this one.” Dangerboy, who said he is more of a host this time around, rather than the star attraction, described his act as attempting “feats of human endurance”, came to national attention via the televised talent quest Australia’s Got Talent when he sparked controversy with his razorblade-eating act. Some of his more unusual talents include the ability to walk barefoot on broken glass, lay on a bed of nails and eat fire. Also on the bill will be Deb Roach, who recently won the International Pole Dancing Championship – innocuous enough, until you realise that Roach was born without most of her left arm. “Deb is just amazing,” Dangerboy said. “She’s an absolute powerhouse who embodies the idea of challenging limitations.” Also on the bill amongst an eclectic mix of fringe talent will be the transgressive, transgender artist Norrie May-Wellbe – the first person in the world to have their gender marked as an X on a passport. “The show is all about encouraging the audience to find beauty in unusual places, and there’s definitely a lot to be found in ‘Cabaret of the Flesh’. Don’t miss ‘Cabaret of the Flesh’, which is on at Lizotte’s Lambton this coming Saturday, October 13.

f there’s one band currently doing the rounds on the Aussie scene at the moment who can’t be accused of resting on their laurels, it’s Brisbane five-piece, Ball Park Music. After releasing their first album, ‘Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs’ at the start of 2011, and in between a rigorous touring schedule, Ball Park Music managed to find the time to
write and record their second long player, ‘Museum’. While frontman Sam Cromack told the Post that it certainly was a busy time after the release of ‘Happiness…’ (the album delivered two songs, ‘It’s Nice To Be Alive’ and ‘All I Want Is You’ in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100), finding the time to pen new tracks was never an issue for the band. “It really was a busy time where you get the feeling that your life is spinning out of control,” Cromack said while unwinding from a 9-and-a-half hour stretch at his barista day job.

“Amidst all of that, I still managed to write because it’s something that I’ve always done – songs have always found a way to mosey into my life. “We actually ended up with enough material for a double album – although I really hate double albums so there’s no chance of any of that.” Cromack said that ‘Museum’, rather than being a radical departure from ‘Happiness…’, was a continuation of the playful, yet multi-faceted indie-rock sound that the band achieved on their debut outing. “Built is a good word to use rather than differ because, in many ways we approached this album the same way,” he explained. “The concept of doing it quite quickly as a way of challenging us as a band and the idea of not overthinking things was part of this record, as it was on the last one.” Ball Park Music, once again enlisted the production services of Matt Redlich (Hungry Kids of Hungry) and
Cromack said they may have found a musical kindred spirit in Redlich, much like the Flaming Lips and producer, Dave Fridmann. “The first time we ever recorded with him it was one of those light-bulb moments,” he said. “He really understands the way we want to approach our music and where we’re coming from – when you find something like that, you’ve got to cherish it.” Catch Ball Park Music at the Bar on the Hill on Friday, October 26 with special guests, Loon Lake.

f it’s blues you want, then it’s blues you’re going to get at the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club this weekend when they play host to a special event celebrating all things of the 12-bar variety. Three of Newcastle’s most rocking bands – DV8, Stone Free and the Kamikaze Cowboys, will be on hand at the blues extravaganza that kicks off at 2pm. When it comes to the elder statesmen of Newie rock title, few can lay a more legitimate claim than DV8.
All the favourite DV8 originals are there in the current set - ‘I Want Your Body’, ‘Down to the Sea’, ‘Dry Your Eyes’, ‘Back to Basics’, ‘Kings X’ along with new tracks and a collection of blues rock covers from favourite artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple and Texas blues rock ‘n’ shuffle favourites ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Winter. ere’s one with a difference. This is the story of Joe, a Charolais steer born in 2007. Early in 2008, Guyra couple Linda and Glen Martin bought him to fatten as a show steer. After realising this would take a while to accomplish, they everntually returned Joe to his original owners, Gary and Sandy Morgan. Linda led her mate to the paddock and was always going to ‘truck’ Joe, however Sandy would always hide him, but his increasing size made this task a little difficult. Looking for ideas and excuses to keep Big Joe, Linda and Sandy came up with the novel idea of using Big Joe to raise money for cancer research – something that had touched both families. It was decided that the pair would organise merchandise to sell and also run a ‘guess Big Joe’s weight’ competition at local show. Linda even enlisted the help of her uncle,
Newcastle muso Mel Sommers, to write a song about Big Joe to help raise funds. The fundraising drive began at Tenterfield with his correct weight guessed as a whopping 1180 kilos. However, during a break before strutting his stuff at Casino Beef Week, Joe unfortunately died, along with a number of cattle on the property after being fed a batch of contaminated grain. This left the novel fundraising drive in limbo, until Sommers and the Steel City Country Music Club came to the rescue. Over the years the club has raised thousands of dollars for various charities and now, after enlisting the help of Aussie country music legends Rod McCormack and Gina Jeffreys (pictured), they will be hosting a special fundraising concert at the Five Islands Recreation Club on Sunday, October 21 from 3pm. Tickets are $25 with all profits raised going to cancer research.

THE IDEA OF NORTH
H
ot on the heels of the release of their highly-anticipated EP, ‘Young North’ Melbourne indie-folksters The Paper Kites will be heading to Newcastle this weekend. The band created quite a stir when they released their beautifully produced debut EP ‘Woodland’ but, as those who have caught the new EP already can attest, ‘Young North’ builds on what the band accomplished on ‘Woodland’ to create five tracks that bristle with creative energy while still maintaining the dreamy meanderings that were so evident on ‘Woodland’. The lead track, ‘A Marker of My Time’, is a near perfect amalgam of the dreampop/folk of tracks like ‘Featherstone’ or ‘The Mortal Boy King’ and the shoegazing guitar noodling of bands like Built to Spill.
The band have toured with the likes of Boy and Bear and Josh Pyke and ‘Featherstone’ was featured in the show ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ while their hit ‘Bloom’ has, thus far, been viewed more than a million times on YouTube. With all of this already under their belts in their short career, it seems, with the release of ‘Young North’, The Paper Kites will go from strength to strength in 2013. Catch The Paper Kites when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, October 13.
New name, same sound
T
hey may have recently changed their name from Dirty Love to D.Love, but that’s not to say you can’t expect the same highly-polished show this band has been putting on around the Newcastle traps for years. D.Love has a diverse musical background and years of experience and have a huge ‘all killer, no filler’ set encompassing the likes of Kings of Leon, The Doors, AC/DC, Guns ‘n’ Roses, MGMT, Katy Perry, Paul Kelly,
The Potbellez and Michael Jackson. No one can accuse these guys of sticking to one genre, yet they also manage to put their own individual spin on each track, leaving audiences waiting more at the end of each energetic set. Sporting a dual male/female vocal attack, D.Love can tackle almost anything and, driven by a common love of all things music, they also share formal classical musical credentials and a rock-solid chemistry. Catch D.Love when they play at the Orana Hotel on Friday, October 12.
