his latest reboot of the Superman franchise, directed by Zack Snyder (‘The Watchmen’, ‘300’) owes more to the sense of tension and drama in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman’ films than it does to the campy Christopher Reeve Superman efforts. While the Superman origin story has been told more than once before - a young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this earth and spends his life discovering where he came from, what he was sent here to do and the hero within himself - this time around there is much more dramatic gravitas, thanks to a credible script and some great performances from the likes of Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner. All of the dizzying special effects are here, but there is substance going on under the whizbangery.

e may be considered slightly naff, but there’s no denying the indelible mark Cliff Richard has left on the world of pop music. From ‘Summer Holiday’, to ‘Wired for Sound’ and everything in between, there isn’t much that Richard has touched that hasn’t turned to gold. Now, the pop idol has released an album of covers, but unlike the torch songs being sung by the likes of Rod Stewart, Richard has turned his hand to rock and roll standards. Tracks like ‘Wake Up Little Suzie’, ‘Rave On’, ‘Dream Lover’, ‘Johnny B Goode’ and ‘Poetry in Motion’ all get the Richard’s treatment and his dulcet tones have never sounded better. The album also features a new track, ‘One More Sunny Day’, but it is when Richard is in rock and roll revisionist mode that this album truly shines.

hile he has since outdone himself with the near perfect ‘Django Unchained’, this bloodsoaked revenge opus still stands as one of the auteur’s finest moments. The story centers around The Bride, played with an expert nonchalance by Uma Thurman. The Bride was a member of the Deadly Viper Assasination Squad, led by her lover
Bill (David Carradine). After discovering she was pregnant with Bill’s child, the Bride flees to Texas and finds love. However, Bill and Co catch up with The Bride during the wedding rehearsal and gun her down in cold blood. The Bride wakes from a coma, and discovers her baby is gone. She then decides to seek revenge upon the five people who destroyed her life and killed her baby. Then the fun begins.

ot on the heels of their latest release ‘Mechanical Bull’ Tennessee rockers Kings Of Leon are heading to Sydney for a one off intimate show. In the seven years since their last visit to the Enmore, the Followill family have had three albums shoot up to the number one spot on the ARIA Charts, received three Grammy awards, performed to massive soldout crowds across the globe and topped 2009’s Triple J Hottest 100 countdown with their anthem ‘Sex On Fire’. Kings Of Leon’s sixth studio album ‘Mechanical Bull’ is arguably the band’s most accomplished record to date, featuring soaring tracks like ‘Supersoaker’ and ‘Wait For Me’. With the band’s previous Australian arena tours selling out, this show offers fans the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the brothers Followill.

ove him or hate him, there’s no denying that Rodney Rude is an Australian comedy icon. His brand of ribald humour, first unleashed on the public via his 1984 live album, taps into the inherent larrikinism and goodnatured rebelliousness ingrained in the Australian psyche. While he maybe considering giving up the rigours of the road, Rude told TE ahead of his upcoming Hunter region jaunt, that the time what right for a dose of his comedy. “Never has there been a time in history where people could do with a little bit of nonsensical laughter,” he said. “I mean, just look at all the s**t that’s going on in Canberra – trusting a politician these days is like asking a rat to mind a turd for another rat.” Rude, who has been waging war against the wowsers for more than 30 years, said that the proliferation of political correctness in this country hasn’t hurt his career, either. “It has helped absolutely – it gives me a platform to go hard and really kick their arses,” he laughed. “The more politically incorrect the climate becomes, the bigger and better the reaction and it also gives me a never ending source of material.” For Rude, his passion for stand-up was just as much about making himself laugh

Jaw-dropping theatre venue, we bring the venue with us,” he said. “The tent is around 26 meters across and the action takes place on a stage that is around three meters, so it’s a really intimate show and audiences really get the chance to get up close and personal to the action.” With a crew that includes the likes of choreographer John “Cha Cha” O’Connell (‘Strictly Ballroom’, ‘Moulin Rouge’, ‘The Great Gatsby’) and designer Angus Strathie (Academy Award for ‘Moulin Rouge’), Williams said the genius in this highly technical production was making everything seem so effortless. “There is so much work that goes into a show like this,” he explained “A lot of the acts are highly technical and they all must maintain top physical shape - just like athletes. “On the technical side of things, because we are working in such a small space, the crew movements have to be also precisely timed making the whole thing a chorographical ballet that has to be seen to be believed.” ‘Empire’ kicks off at Wheeler Place on Thursday, November 14 and will run until Sunday, December 8. For more information and tickets visit ticketek.com.au. TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to see ‘Empire’ at Wheeler Place on Friday, November 22 at 9.30pm. ewcastle, everything you thought you knew about theatre is about to be thrown out the window. The good folks at Spiegelworld will be pitching their opulent spiegeltent (Dutch for “mirror tent”) at Wheeler Place for their latest show ‘Empire’ – a heady amalgam of circus, cabaret, vaudeville and burlesque. After its world premiere in New York last year, ‘Empire’ has been travelling around Australia since the start of this year and associate director Terrence Williams told TE that Newcastle audiences could expect a well-oiled machine when the show hits town. “I guess you could say that ‘Empire’ is a cross between ‘Cirque de Soleil’ and ‘South Park’,” he laughed. “It’s sexy and a whole lot of fun and it’s definitely a love letter to New York, there are a lot of New York elements to the production.” Aside from the eclectic denizens of ‘Empire’, that include an Ethiopian foot juggler and a world champion wheelmaster known as The Half Naked Asian Dude Wearing Pigtails, Williams said that the venue – a 700-seat spiegeltent, decked out with bevelled mirrors and velvet upholstery – was as much a part of the show as its cast of crazy characters. “It’s such a wonderful place to perform and instead of just rolling up to any old

ussie rock afficianados are sure to be in hog heaven with six of the best heading to Bimbadgen, next year, for A Day On The Green to Remember. Headlined by the legendary Jimmy Barnes, the day will also feature The Angels with Dave Gleeson, Barney’s Cold Chisel alumni Ian Moss, Richard Clapton and Boom Crash Opera. Barnes, who is no stranger to the A Day On The Green stage, both in solo mode and with Chisel said he couldn’t wait to rock the winery crowd once again. “It’s a fantastic way to enjoy music, sitting back with your friends in a great location,” he said. “We all have a great time catching up backstage, there’s always a good feeling across the whole day which makes it a pleasure to play.” Catch this Aussie rock extravaganza at Bimbadgen Estate on Saturday, March 22. Tickets are onsale now through Ticketmaster – GA $89.50, silver $110, gold $129, platinum $149.
Corbett’s coming home
A
fter even months on the road on his extensive and ambitious ‘Lucky Country Hall Tour’ Neewcastle’s Bob Corbett is coming home this weekend for the final show of the run. The mammoth tour is unique in that instead of playing the usual pubs and clubs that make up the Aussie touring circuit, Corbett and his Roo Grass Band took to playing halls in regional and rural communities across Australia. Corbett has relished the opportunity to play in some truly historic and treasured venues, including 130 year old stone halls in South Australia, the Gulgong Opera House, erected in 1871 and “a creepily cavernous hall in Lithgow the locals say is haunted”. After bagging 9 awards including the APRA / ABC Songwriter Award at the 1233
ABC Music awards between 2007 - 2009, Bob won a further stamp of approval from the industry when he was crowned Toyota Star Maker at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2012, putting him & the band on high rotation on the circuit, and landing him in Nashville TN. Corbett is donating $5 from every ticket sold at his shows to Melanoma Institute Australia in an attempt to raise awareness about the insidious disease. He hoped to raise $5000 when he embarked on the tour in February, but thanks to the raffle of a guitar signed by many of Australia’s great country music stars, and the generosity of the people attending the band’s concerts, Corbett and co have raise over $6000. Catch Bob Corbett and the Roo Grass band at the Savoy Room, New Lambton Community Centre on Sunday, November 17.

ixing all the infectious energy of a live act with the massive repertoire and general inherent “hipness” of a DJ, AdzDrumz is sure to have even the most jaded gig pigs getting on down with abandon. With more than 15 years of touring, recording and performing as one of the country’s leading session drummers, Adam Morris has taken his love of great songs, huge beats, funky rhythms and need to always have fun, and has created one of the most original, polished, professional, exciting and dynamic live dj/electronic acts available. Think the likes of Prince, Dizzee Rascal, Basement Jaxx and you’re in the right ballpark. AdzDrumz is the perfect ingredient for almost any musical scenario. hen it comes to enthusiastic young musicians doing their thing around the traps, they don’t come much more so than Central Coast-based singer/guitarist Howard Shearman. In the short time Shearman has been plying his musical trade, he has recorded two EPs and shared stages with a number of Aussie music luminaries such as Jon Stevens (Noiseworks), James Reyne (Australian Crawl) and Rai Thistlewayte (Thirsty Merc), to name a few. After clocking up gigs in more than 100 different venues, there’s no doubt that Shearman has developed the chops to entertain any audience. Also, with a covers set that reads like a whose–who of popular music, this guy could well be described as a human jukebox. Catch Howard Shearman at the Mary Ellen on Thursday, November 14.

fter the tragic and untimely death of irrepressible frontman Steve Gilipn in 1991, it seemed that New Zealand-spawned synth rockers Mi-Sex would never grace a stage again. Thankfully, after more than 20 years away from the spotlight, the band are back on the road with former Noiseworks guitarist Steve Balbi stepping into Gilpin’s shoes. “Honestly, none of us ever thought we’d play again after Steve died so when Steve Balbi came on board it was just absolutely brilliant,” keboard player Murray Burns said. “The thing about Steve is that he is not trying to imitate Steve [Gilpin] – he brings his own thing to it and he is a fantastic frontman. Formed in New Zealand in 1977, MiSex cut a synth soaked swathe through the Aussie pub rock scene, thanks largely

to their runaway smash hit and spookily eerie pean to the burgeoning onslaught of the information age ‘Computer Games’ although Burns said the iconic track almost never saw the light of day. “It’s quite funny because the song only really took five minutes to come together but we were quite nervous because it wasn’t your average rock song. “The record company weren’t keen to put it out but we started playing it live and it was getting a great reaction. The album was already at the pressers so the record company actually stopped the run halfway through and repressed it with ‘Computer Games’ on it.” After the single hit, Mi-Sex found themselves touring with the likes of Iggy Pop and the Ramones, but for Burns, it was acase of being in the right place at the right time. “We were just so bloody lucky to have come over to Australia in the late 70s just at the right time for the pub rock scene to take off here – it was a crazy time.” Catch Mi-Sex at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday, November 14

ith a moniker like Old Man Luedecke, you’d be forgiven if you expect a grizzled bluesman from the deep south to come shuffling across the stage. However, at 37, the multiple Juno award-winning Canadian singer songwriter is far from old and revels more in bluegrass than the blues. His highly literate and beautifully lilting banjo-driven folk delights in subtlety and nuance, however, his latest album, the critically lauded ‘Tender is the Night’ shows Luedecke spreading his sonic wings, incorporating a full band into his sound. Luedecke is heading to Newcastle as the support for Jordie Lane and he said that the prospect of opening for the Australian singer-songwriter was an exciting one. “I certainly can’t wait to get out on the road with Jordie – he is an amazing artist,” he said. “It’s going to be really cool to get to hang out and play some shows together Despite a much fuller sound on ‘Tender is the Night’, Luedecke said the process was very similar to the way he approached songwriting on his previous albums, albeit a tad longer as life, as it is wont to do, got in the way. “The process was somewhat similar to the way I typically record, but we shook it up by recording with Tim O’Brien in
Nashville which brought a whole new dynamic,” he said. “For me, before I had children, songwriting came quite easily to me, but now I have three, so it does tend to slow down. So this time, the songs came along at their own pace – some faster than others. But all in all it was around a two-year process.” With Nashville and some of its most in-demand players (including producer O’Brien, bass player Mike Bub and drummer Kenny Malone) providing aesthetic inspiration, Luedecke said the album tackles a variety topics with one overarching theme. “The songs are about a variety of topics, a meditation on art and ambition is present in a lot of what I do,” he said. “Art and whether there is spiritual success without worldly success, that’s at the heart of Tender is the Night.” Catch Old Man Luedecke when he opens for Jordie Lane at Lizotte’s Lambton on Thursday, November 21.

f you are planning a trip to the CBC Bar and Grill at Charlestown Bowling Club, then you’d best time your arrival well to avoid the long lines of diners eager to sample head chef Greg Hawke’s sumptuous a-la-carte menu. The menu is stacked with many club staples such as the humble chicken schnitzel with salad and chips or a huge 300-gram rump steak, but there is a range of unexpected twists on favourites such as a Wagyu beef burger with a roast beetroot chutney and tempura calamari rings. There is also a sizable range of house-made pizzas on offer and the specials board changes daily, making repeat visits almost inevitable. After a quick peruse of the menu, my dining partner and I decided to kick off our meal with a simple cheese and garlic bread which was fresh, crunchy and perfectly warmed with just the right
amount of both garlic and cheese. While nearly everything on the menu tempted, my dining partner and I both decided on mains from the specials menu – an eye fillet of beef with roasted root vegetables and a tomato hollandaise for me and a herb crusted salmon with a lemon and dill risotto for my dining partner. The beef fillet, ordered mediumrare was cooked perfectly and ridiculously tender and the vegetables were a hearty accompaniment while the creamy but not too rich tomato hollandaise tied the two together and lifted the dish from just “meat and veg” to a spectacular meal, full of colour and flavour, that could grace the menu of any fine dining establishment. The salmon was another triumph. The risotto, by itself would have been a standout dish. Served perfectly aldente, it was creamy and bursting with a zesty lemon freshness that, when combined with a beautifully cooked piece of salmon, was an absolute delight from the first morsel to the last.

hey may’ve been playing music together since they were children but for brothers Oliver and Louis Leimbach, it took until they could actually stand each other before they could play in the same band. The result is the highly infectious and refreshingly organic five piece Lime Cordiale, who are currently kicking some serious goals with their latest EP ‘Falling Up The Stairs’ generating some serious chatter around the traps – not least for the EP’s two highly infectious (and serious contenders for the feelgood hot of the summer ) singles “Bulls**t Aside’’ and ‘Sleeping at Your Door’. The EP, produced by renowned deskman Daniel Denholm (Midnight Oil, The Whitlams, Billy Thorpe) is a much fuller and musically adventurous set than their debut ‘Faceless Cat’ and frontman, Oliver Leimbach told TE that there was a lot more experimentation ine the studio this time around. “Basically, with the first EP we just went into the studio, plugged in and recorded,” he said. “With this one, we had Daniel on board so we were able to experiment a lot more with sounds and structures and we found it a lot easier to achieve our vision of where we saw our music going.” Leimbach said while they may have been at odds in their formative years, he and brother Louis are now essentially best mates “We didn’t really like each other until we turned 18 and now we’re best mates -we’re even living together in Bondi. Catch Lime Cordiale when they play at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, November 16.

he Lass O’Gowrie is surely the place to be this Friday night when Newcastle’s resident funsters, Main Guy and the Other Guys take to the stage in what will be a bit of a double celebration. Firstly, the show will be the band’s last with drummer Nicholas “Crimmo” Crimmings who is apparently retiring from music to pursue a career as a triathlete (claim may not be true), and secondly the
guys will be celebrating the release of their second music video for their grand ballad, ‘The Stalker’. We have been given a sneak preview of the clip here at the TE offices and we can honestly say that it’s a cracker and filled with the same self-effacing hilarity that made their debut clip ‘Partyhard’ such a kneeslapper. Like ‘Partyhard’ the band has made use of many Novocastrian locales such as Darby Street, The Croatian Club and The Lock Up. Catch Main Guy and the Other Guys at the Lass O’Gowrie on Friday, November 15 alongside The Sufferjets and the Hedonists.
