We need answers on jobs Workers call for solution to privatisation plan’s impact on local employment AMELIA PARROTT

s unemployment levels in the Hunter hit 12.4 per cent last week, workers gathered in Newcastle on Saturday to demand action from the State Government. A week out from the state election, workers from the health, disability, education, manufacturing and electricity sectors gathered to air their concerns about the potential of job losses under the Baird Government’s asset privatisation model. Shaun Goss, a local train builder, said if contracts for the state government’s new $2.8 billion intercity rail fleet go overseas, it could have a significant impact on jobs locally, as well as at a state level. “Manufacturing in rail and ship building have been the heartbeat of the Hunter for decades and we are now being targeted by politicians who think the cheapest is the best at any cost and unfortunately that cost is our jobs,” he said. “Mike Baird keeps saying this government has created 100,000 jobs. “I’d like to know where because it certainly isn’t here.” Rachael Smoothy, a disability services support worker said her industry, where 14,000 jobs are reportedly at risk, was seen as a “soft target” for privatisation because the people utilising services cannot vote, and the sector primarily employs women. “It’s a gender issue,” she said.

Workers from a number of sectors gathered to raise awareness of potential job losses under Premier Mike Baird’s asset privatisation plan “Our jobs are undervalued because it’s seen as caring and part of the female psyche and not at all professional. “If this valuable service was staffed by men the attention and action around this attempted privatisation would be very different.” Visiting the region last week, Premier Mike Baird defended his track record in jobs creation. “There’s over 100,000 additional jobs that have

come to NSW and obviously here in the Hunter we need to focus on it,” he said. “The more that we grow the economy the more opportunities we have and I can assure you were are focused on keeping NSW at the top of the pack economically.” But Shadow Treasurer Michael Daley said unemployment levels in the Hunter had risen sharply in the time that Mr Baird has been in power. The funding promises have been coming thick and fast ahead of Saturday’s election and now it’s up to the voters to decide what to make of it all. As with all elections, there were a lot of “me too” type announcements - one party would announce a block of funding for roads, for instance, and the other would vow to match it while adding a couple of little sweeteners to make their proposal more attractive. The general consensus amongst political experts seems to be that the Coalition will win, but this time with a substantially-reduced margin. Given the dramas with ICAC last year, I’m sure Mike Baird would be expecting that to happen and will be happy just to get another term in office regardless of the majority. There’s also the issue of whether Tony Abbott’s apparent unpopularity at a federal level will impact on Mr Baird. I think there may be some voters who lump state and federal politics together when deciding who to support but I believe the majority are intelligent enough to realise there are substantial differences. On Labor’s side, Luke Foley has done quite well in his limited time as Opposition Leader. He comes across as a calm, organised politician and has given the party some stability and

Now it’s up to the voters to decide

consistency after the unexpected departure of John Robertson. Perhaps the election has come around too soon for him to make himself well known enough and trusted amongst the community. Great to see that the Mata’utia brothers Chanel, Pat and Sione will be remaining with the Knights after signing new three-year deals last week. It does make a mockery though of the rules surrounding negotiations with the brothers having signed letters of intent six months ago to switch to the Canterbury Bulldogs. The letters of intent don’t actually bind anyone to the agreement - his current club has until round 13 in the next season to convince a player to stay with them. It creates uncertainty all around. The Bulldogs did well to get the brothers to agree to join them and should be able to reasonably expect that they will end up with them in their colours. Of course, they would certainly have been aware of the risks of dealing with letters of intent and I’m sure they have a back-up plan of other players to approach. But there needs to be a better system, whereby one minute players are agreeing to join a club then changing their minds months later.

$18 million to go where it matters Government pledges funding to upgrade neonatal intensive care if elected AMELIA PARROTT

abies in the Hunter will be among those to benefit from a re-elected Liberal Government, with Premier Mike Baird and Health Minister Jillian Skinner committing $18 million to complete the upgrade of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at John Hunter Children’s Hospital. The investment, to be made through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund, would boost the unit’s capacity from 42 to 53 cots. Mrs Skinner said demand for neonatal intensive care services was increasing. “John Hunter Children’s Hospital is the primary referral facility for more than 20 per cent of the state’s children and young people,” she said. “Demand for these services has risen almost 20 per cent in the past 10 years, which is why it is vital these intensive care units are upgraded to meet patient demand and provide parents with a supportive, comfortable setting to be with their children. The upgrade will add an extra 11 special care and neonatal intensive care cots to the unit, and allow for new isolation rooms for babies with infections, dedicated

The Post’s evolution The Post will soon be evolving into a highgloss weekly lifestyle magazine bringing readers throughout the Hunter region the best of food, wine, fashion, entertainment as well as the latest community and major events. There will be a number of feature stories each week highlighting local people and businesses. The magazine will be available in hundreds of locations across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland. Cessnock and Port Stephens, including shopping centres, service stations, newsagents and real estate agencies. The Port Stephens area represents an expansion area for the Post. The magazine will be available each Wednesday. The first edition of the magazine will be Wednesday, April 15. The newspaper will be printed as normal on both Wednesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 8.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner and Premier Mike Baird at John Hunter Hospital palliative care facilities, family support areas and parent accommodation. The $7 million first stage of the project is set to begin in the coming months. While in town, Mr Baird and Mrs Skinner also promised to begin work on the new Maitland Hospital at Metford in its second term of government, if the Liberal Government is re-elected on Saturday. The announcement was met with scepticism from the Labor camp, with Shadow Minister for Health Walt Secord claiming

the new hospital would be private. “For months, the Liberals have been ducking and weaving on Maitland hospital issues,” he said. “The Liberals have been refusing to release the funding model for the new hospital. “The reason is simple; if the community had the financial details on Maitland hospital, they wouldn’t like it.” Mrs Skinner said regardless of the funding model, public patients would be treated at the new hospital.

THE GREENS Both major parties have Lake Macquarie gazetted as a safe independent seat. In reality this means they do not do anything in this area. I believe the people of Lake Macquarie deserve better than this, at this election I would like to see a change or at least a close call. This would ensure the Lake people get some much needed attention. My particular concern is the expanding population in the southern area of the shire with very little to no infrastructure. I have listened to the southern lake residents and one of the big issues, most pressing, is a lack of medical facilities. In the event of an emergency on the Morisset Peninsula it can take up to 18 minutes for help to arrive

or 45-minute round trip back to a hospital. There is also a very high proportion of young people looking for work in Lake Macquarie, this needs to be addressed. The Greens are determined to make sure every person in New South Wales has access to high-quality, free public education and training. We are against the privatisation of our public assets believing essential services are just that and should remain public hands to protect the public’s interest.

Greg Piper INDEPENDENT

I am committed to progressing the economic and social development of Lake Macquarie while preserving its sensitive environment and the unique, relaxed lifestyle residents enjoy. Western and southern Lake Macquarie are poised for substan-

tial growth, but that has to be accompanied by infrastructure and services. We’ve had more than $16 million spent on the Main Road between Morisset and Booragul since I have been in Parliament, but the ideal is for a dual carriageway all the way through. The planned interchange at Glendale is also a key transport project, which will have flow-on benefits in job creation and commercial and residential growth. Better health resources for southern Lake Macquarie is a high priority. The public hospital campaign continues but we are also moving forward on a partnership model with private providers supplying additional, much-needed services on a bulk-billed basis. I will continue to work for better public transport, including a bus from Morisset to Wyong Hospital, an independent air quality monitor and money for building works in schools. I have proved that strong, Independent representation does get

results. We have a commitment to sewering Wyee, a new regional football complex, a police transport command base coming to Morisset this year, and more money for roads, schools, and community building projects.

Daniel Collard LIBERAL

I am the Liberal candidate for Lake Macquarie at the 2015 NSW Election. I graduated from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Music and work as a local piano teacher. Unlike Labor, I am part of a team that will build the infrastructure we need and deserve. I am part of a team that will build the roads, rail, hospitals and schools that our community needs. I will stand up for the people of Lake Macquarie, and I will be a strong advocate for the area in the NSW Parliament.

ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY My name is Susan Strain and I live locally with my family and work in community aged care in the Lake Macquarie area. Standing as a candidate for the Animal Justice Party in Lake Macquarie is my first foray into the world of politics. The Animal Justice Party has been formed as a response to a growing public concern about the neglect of animals and animal protection issues by most political parties. I have spoken to many kind and compassionate people in Lake Macquarie and they have expressed to me with a great deal of concern, that after becoming aware of dreadful acts of cruelty such as the live baiting of greyhounds and the ongoing cruelty of

LABOR

Education is the great enabler. I want Lake Macquarie to be a place where young people get a quality education from schools that are well resourced. Labor is committed to increased public funding for schools under the Gonski reforms. Skills training leads to meaningful jobs and helps meet our local workforce needs. TAFE deserves more respect as a quality education provider and Labor has a plan to restore support to this sector. Residents of Lake Macquarie deserve access to well-resourced public health services. system - such as free flu vaccinations in pharmacies, whooping cough vaccines for pregnant mothers and nurse walk in centres to treat common illnesses. Privatisation of our electricity network will not benefit us. In other states, the sale of poles and wires has resulted in increased power prices and a less reliable electricity supply. Labor is committed to keeping these assets, and the profits they generate, in public hands. I grew up in Lake Macquarie and our community has compassion for those of us doing it tough. We stand together to make sure that no-one gets left behind. I would be honoured to represent the people of Lake Macquarie.

Kim Gritten CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY I have three key areas of concern for Lake Macquarie 1) Unemployment - New Industry brings new technology, new technology does not need as many skilled employees. Educating and retraining the unemployed is not going to see Unemployment drop if you without a healthy Small business industry. the complete answer. The question to ask here is: why are we increasing immigration and paying more to house and upskill them, than it costs to train Australian youth into an apprenticeship? 2) Health issues - The South Western end of Lake Macquarie has a rapidly growing aged demo graph that justifies the requirements for a hospital. As well as new subdivisions opening which will bring future new families. The western side of the Lake requires a Sub-Acute Hospital facility at least to service these needs. 3) Environment - People in Lake Macquarie live in a unique environment. I would like to see a permanent research and monitoring building on the Lake. ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY I’m a local residing in Nords Wharf; I come from a diverse background where I have personally witnessed the good and bad of the human and non-human animal co-existence. I truly believe in the notion of equality for all beings across all species and dream of a world where the strong protect the vulnerable and compassion is at the forefront of our lives. I have an unwavering commitment to compassion and believe we must practice it, teach it and promote it as people and as a society. Speaking with members of the community has been a positive reinforcement that the community wants a party for animals and recognises that animals have a rightful place in our society. I will campaign to ban puppy farms, end the cruel greyhound industry, promote better education programs and fight to give the police more powers to

investigate and prosecute animal cruelty cases. Locally I want to see better infrastructure in regards to the disabled, elderly and those with mobility issues. I will perform strict scrutiny over all developments be it residential, commercial or industrial to ensure that all members of the community including our precious wildlife are protected and that the character of individual suburbs are recognised and maintained.

but ultimately, people living in the electorate of Swansea need strong leadership to deliver results. I will be providing that. My priorities for Swansea are: keeping our electricity network in public hands; protecting public health and delivering better health services to ensure equal access for everyone and to support our nurses and doctors; a fairer education system - fighting to save TAFE and for the full implementation of the Gonski reforms and protecting local jobs for local workers. This includes supporting local industries to provide jobs into the future. I will be a strong local voice for Swansea.

Phillipa Parsons

LABOR

THE GREENS

I have first-hand experience in seeing how good government policy can have a positive impact on people’s lives. I want to be a representative in the NSW Parliament to implement policies which will benefit the people of Swansea and NSW more broadly. I joined the Labor Party over 25 years ago because it was the party most closely aligned with my own values of fairness, justice and equality and these values underpin my own and Labor’s priorities - health, education and jobs. The Swansea electorate is a diverse community with differing needs,

As a high school teacher, I understand the value of public education, from preschool through to TAFE, and will continue to fight against this governments’ privatisation agenda. Belmont TAFE funding is being slashed and many courses are being outsourced. Our youth unemployment rate is at 18 per cent yet without affordable and accessible TAFE how will young people gain the skills and qualifications they need to get a job? A strong TAFE system will be integral in skilling up workers,

young and old, for new industries in renewable energy. Recent economists’ reports predict that coal mining is a dying industry, with the biggest buyers of our thermal coal, India and China, phasing it out over the next decade. What will this leave our future generations other than big holes in the ground? Only the Greens are thinking about the future of our economy and calling for a diversified economic base. Currently, a permit to conduct seismic surveying for petroleum off the coast between Redhead and Budgewoi has been approved. This has the potential to create ‘fish deserts’ and destroy local fishing and tourism industries, and lead to the establishment of offshore drilling rigs and onshore storage facilities. I am passionate about caring for the environment and our communities, and I will work for a kinder, more just and ecologically sustainable world for our children and grandchildren to inherit.

Garry Edwards INDEPENDENT

My vision for the Swansea electorate is to build on the achievements that I have delivered on during the last four years and continue working towards raising the profile of Swansea as the gateway to Lake Macquarie. This area has so much potential to grow

and prosper into the future as a major tourist destination as we are blessed to live between Lake Macquarie and our pristine coastline. If I am given the opportunity to continue representing the Swansea electorate as a Member of Parliament, my focus will be to lobby for the establishment of palliative care facilities within the electorate, continue to improve local roads and infrastructure and represent the interests of small business owners, who are the major employers within our communities. I will fight to secure funding to ensure the Swansea Channel remains navigable into the future, lobby on behalf of our volunteer emergency service organisations to ensure they are fully funded and resourced and continue to work closely with our police to keep this wonderful community safe. Public safety is one of this electorate’s major issues and it will be a pleasure to see the completion of the Lake Macquarie Local Area Command Headquarters at Belmont later this year. Our communities will certainly benefit from increased police presence and response times. It will be an honour to continue fighting for the Swansea electorate’s fair share.

Charlestown candidates have their say Jane Oakley THE GREENS

I have a vision for a Charlestown with reliable, affordable and effective public transport that gets you where you need to go, when you need to go there. I have a vision for a Charlestown with high quality public education. Where TAFE is accessible and owned by us, the people and not some corporation looking to extend it’s bottom line. I have a vision for a Charlestown that is free from off-shore gas, where our beautiful coastline is protected from exploitation and destruction by greedy multinationals. I have a vision where the people of Charlestown aren’t taken for granted by their politicians but hold them accountable for their actions. But this vision doesn’t just have to be a fantasy. It can and should be a reality. We deserve so much more than what has been given to us time and time again from both of the old parties. I don’t just have a vision, I have a plan. A plan that is costed, studied and proven to deliver. A plan that will provide world class TAFE facilities, public transport and protect our coastline. This election, vote for accountability, vote for integrity, vote for honesty. Vote #1 for The Greens.

Arjay Martin INDEPENDENT

Imagine a representative in Parliament who is consistent, competent, empathetic, intelligent and with integrity. Imagine one who is government-experienced, reasonable, balanced, takes you seriously and never ever gives up on you or your family. Imagine having someone you can trust. With your help and support it can happen; with me, Arjay Martin, as your MP. I will deliver. The Liberals have overwhelmingly won this election according to polls. You will still get all of the goodies that the Liberal government promised, no matter who wins in Charlestown. The local office will have the same resources too. I have already delivered on many local issues; saving Lake Macquarie Council’s fireworks via the 2012 Australia Day Committee, help-

ing prevent the closure of Main Street Boolaroo and renaming of suburbs to Lake Macquarie, forcing Labor’s candidate to print locally and at least install electronic signage around the still unfulfilled Cameron Park roundabout that she promised for electing her Mayor in 2012. After weeks of investigating the smashed up asbestos building across from Dudley Public School and issuing a service request, the potentially fatal building will finally have something done about it after three years of inaction. There is more I can do. See more: www.arjaymartin.com.

Jodie Harrison LABOR

Charlestown needs a government focused on what people need. Jobs will be a priority for me as your Member of Parliament. The NSW Liberals have sent contracts overseas and moved call centre jobs off shore. We need a government that looks after local jobs. Labor has committed to prioritising local businesses in government contracts and ensure 15 per cent of government contract jobs go to apprentices. Education and training are vital for people to get good jobs. The Liberal government’s cuts to TAFE have seen over 1,000 teachers sacked, fees sky-rocket and courses axed. Labor will return fees to 2014 levels and ensure that TAFE is properly funded to make people job ready. Nurses are essential in our health care system and Labor will utilise their skills to look after people. Labor will employ 840 new nurses to ensure that in emergency rooms and paediatric wards there is one nurse for every three patients. This will help deliver quality care when people need it most and reduce emergency room waiting times. Labor will ensure there is a registered nurse in all aged care facilities, allow pharmacists to deliver vaccines and abolish the chemotherapy co-payment. These are sensible changes which will deliver good outcomes.

Brian Tucker CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY I am committed to supporting many aspects of the community from education to the environ-

ment, from drug abuse to defence, from health to housing and from jobs to transport. I will endeavour to build the faith of Australians in the leadership of our nation and one way that I intend to achieve that is by being a service to my community and to the people of the Charlestown electorate, so that we can stand together for honesty and dignity to restore this back into public policy and society. Confidence in leadership has been lacking for some time and as a community leader I will up hold a free democratic society with freedom of speech, the rule of law and stable constitutional government. I will support and strength the Family unit as the basis of our society and responsible parenting with pro-family, pro-child policies. I will foster the principles of government accountability and responsibility and active citizen participation in a social agreement. I will advance the cause of social justice for all; the under-privileged, the unemployed, the handicapped, the elderly and the displaced. I am committed this election to protecting and enhancing our Aussie way of life.

Jason Pauling LIBERAL

The Charlestown electorate is poised to be a region of incredible promise and opportunity. The Mike Baird Liberal Government has delivered numerous and significant benefits to the region and if elected I will ensure this investment continues. The Baird Liberal team has a plan to invest $20 billion into infrastructure, schools and hospitals and has a plan to pay for it by leasing 49 per cent of the electricity distribution network, conditional on delivery of lower electricity prices. Don’t be fooled by scaremongering from Labor and the unions - this is a rock solid and funded plan to keep NSW number one and pave the way for the creation of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in flow on benefits. I have demonstrated my tenacity in defending local residents and fighting for policy change in my role on Lake Macquarie City Council. If elected I will ensure that the Charlestown electorate receives its fair share of investment and attention from the state government. I will ensure projects such as the Rankin Park to Jesmond link of the Inner City Bypass, upgrades to Hillsborough Road, Kahibah Road and

Northcott Drive are delivered as well as upgrades to Hunter Sports High. I will fight relentlessly for a signature tourism event such as the Red Bull Air Race and the establishment of a commuter cycleway network.

Luke Arms INDEPENDENT

My vision for Charlestown is for its constituents to have tireless, strategic, non-partisan representation in the NSW Parliament. No party lines, no excuses. Just honest, transparent, truly independent advocacy for the people of my electorate and the issues they bring to my attention each day. To help address youth unemployment in Charlestown, I’ll fight for TAFE funding to be restored. Without affordable vocational training, our young people won’t be able to get jobs and youth unemployment will continue to climb. To help create jobs in Charlestown, I’ll work towards funding new projects in renewable energy, manufacturing and technology via royalties from our declining coal industry - before it’s too late to extract a lasting return from our mines. To give Charlestown voters more confidence in the integrity of government policies and planning decisions, I’ll campaign for commonsense reforms that return the power to the people, starting with significant reductions to campaign spending limits and outlawing political donations from corporations and businesses. I’ll also demand the government back its policies with independent research and science rather than mere ideology. Meanwhile, I’m already pioneering the use of unmoderated social media for accessible, accountable communication with the people of Charlestown.

CR JODIE HARRISON Lake Macquarie City Council Mayorr

Harmony Day a wonderful celebration of our diversity

Join in the global Earth Hour initiative this Saturday night

his past Sunday marked the fifteenth anniversary of Harmony Day which celebrates diversity, acceptance and respect. Diversity recognises that each individual is unique, and appreciates our differences. One of the many definitions of harmony is agreement in action, opinion and feeling. An accord if you like. Harmony Day is about promoting and combining these concepts. Council supports these values and has endorsed a statement in favour of a culturally and religiously diverse city and committed to providing a welcoming city for refugees. The statement affirms Council’s belief in “maintaining our city as a culturally diverse, inclusive community, united by a commitment to democratic principles and fairness” as well as “the right of all our residents to enjoy equal rights and be treated with equal respect.” Highlights of the statement include: • Council is committed to maintaining Newcastle as a multicultural city. Newcastle’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity is an integral part of our city’s identity and is intrinsic to our city’s vitality.

T

• Multiculturalism is in the interest of all Novocastrians and expresses our sense of fairness and inclusion. It enhances respect and support for cultural, religious and linguistic expression. • Migrants to Newcastle, including our most recent arrivals, have brought muchneeded skills, labour and ideas to our city. Those who choose to call Newcastle home have the right to practise and share their religious and cultural traditions free from discrimination. • We are committed to a just, inclusive and socially cohesive city where everyone can participate in the opportunities that Newcastle offers. • We will act to promote understanding and acceptance of people of all backgrounds and faiths. We reject all expressions of religious or racial intolerance and discrimination. This statement reinforces our firm belief in the rights of all citizens to peacefully pursue their faiths and cultural traditions. We only have to look to Council’s recent Australia Day Citizenship ceremony, in which we welcomed 119 applicants from 38 countries, as an example of the wonderful cultural diversity of our city.

his Saturday night, I encourage all residents of Lake Macquarie to switch off their power at 8.30pm and dine by candlelight to celebrate Earth Hour. Launched in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has become a global phenomenon with an estimated 50-100 million people worldwide switching off their lights to reduce global emissions and promote sustainable practices. Council is doing its part to help reduce emissions in our City, with an aim to cut per capita emissions by 45 per cent by 2023. To help with this goal, this year, Council replaced more than 1650 fluorescent light tubes with energy-saving LEDs in its administration building. Solar panels, with a combined capacity of 237 kilowatts, have also been installed at a number of sites and 21 energy efficient heat pumps and solar hot water systems have been installed in community facilities with identified high hot water usage. While Lake Macquarie City has a long history of being a coal mining City, this image is starting to change with

T

the City seeing the highest uptake of solar power production in the Ausgrid residential network. Last year electricity use decreased by 4 per cent across the City when compared to 2012/2013. Making small changes to our everyday actions will not only help to maintain a healthy environment for future generations but will help you save money as well. Download Council’s free Lake Macquarie Sustainable Living Guide from www.lakemac.com.au to learn how you can improve your energy efficiency, decrease water consumption and reduce waste. On another note, the Geographical Names Board last week announced that Aeropelican Airport has been officially gazetted as Lake Macquarie Airport. This is an exciting announcement for Lake Macquarie City, as the renaming will readily identify the major regional infrastructure asset with our City and demonstrates the belief the owners of Lake Macquarie airport have in the vibrant and dynamic nature of the local economy.

Keeping key decisions in the Hunter A Labor victory in Saturday’s election will see a locally-based transport authority developed AMELIA PARROTT

@amelia_parrott

abor will establish a Hunter Transport Authority if it is successful in this Saturday’s election. Deputy Labor Leader Linda Burney visited Adamstown last Friday to make the commitment, one that she said was “long overdue”. “The Sydney-centric approach from Mike Baird and Gladys Berejiklian has delivered a terrible transport result for Newcastle and the wider Hunter and this region is not getting the attention it deserves,” she said. “Labor will ensure that planning decisions regarding Hunter transport are made right here in the Hunter and especially sensitive to the people directly affected by them.” The authority will be responsible for coordinating timetables and ensuring efficient interchanges between public transport modes, and will report to the Minister for the Hunter on the performance of public transport across the region. It is an idea that has enjoyed support from local councils, the business community as well as representatives from both sides of the political divide.

L

Deputy Labor Leader Linda Burney, Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison, Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp, Labor candidate for Swansea Yasmin Catley and Wallsend MP and Shadow Minister for the Hunter Sonia Hornery at Adamstown Station

Labor candidate for Swansea Yasmin Catley said the announcement was particularly good news for commuters in her area. “The biggest issue we have is connectivity,” she said. “It takes two buses to get from Valentine to Charlestown - you have to go via Warners Bay. “The electorate of Swansea will benefit most significantly, I think, from this announcement.” Liberal candidate for Newcastle Karen Howard said while the idea for a Hunter Transport Authority had merit, she was more concerned about delivering transport infrastructure. “My priority is ensuring that transport projects like the light rail are delivered by the government,” she said. “If elected I will happily work with Mike Baird and his team to ensure that we have the best arrangements in place to deliver the region’s transport infrastructure needs. “A Hunter Transport Authority is an idea that has merit, notwithstanding my already stated concern about creating another layer of bureaucracy, but my priority is ensuring transport projects Newcastle needs, like the light rail, are delivered by the government.”

lanes could soon be dipping and diving over Lake Macquarie with plans afoot to bring the Red Bull Air Race to Warners Bay. Last week it was revealed that Lake Macquarie’s economic development company, Dantia, have been working for the past 12 months on bringing the international event to the lake. Charlestown MP and Lake Macquarie Mayor Jodie Harrison said the ideal had initially been floated by local pilot and Red Bull Air Race competitor Matt Hall. “Matt Hall came to the chief executive of Dantia … and said I would really like to bring the Red Bull Air Race to Lake Macquarie in 2016,” she said. “Dantia has been working very hard behind the scenes, very quietly, knocking on people’s doors, knocking on the Transport Minister’s door, knocking on the Hunter Minister’s door, knocking on the doors of people in Canberra to get funding so it can be put on in Lake Macquarie and this has been going on for about 12 months.” Liberal candidate for Charlestown Jason Pauling said if elected this Saturday, he would fight to bring the international

“Previous races have attracted more than 70,000 people over two days, so this event has the potential to inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy.” Ms Harrison labelled Mr Pauling’s support of the event as “politically convenient”.

ollowing last week’s announcement that a Labor government would commit $65 million to the continued duplication of Nelson Bay Road, Premier Mike Baird has come to the party, pledging $67 million to duplicate the road from the Stockton Bridge to Anna Bay. Announcing the funding on Wednesday, Mr Baird said the next stage of duplication would build on work the Liberal Government was already carrying out in the area. “As the main link connecting Newcastle and the Tomaree Peninsula, Nelson Bay Road is a vital road for the communities of Port Stephens,” he said in a statement. “It carries the bulk of local and tourist traffic visiting the Nelson Bay area and further duplication of the remaining single lane sections of this road will be a priority of a re-elected Baird Government. “The $45 million Stage Three upgrade of the Nelson Bay Road was announced, designed and construction started inside four years by this Government. “Our investment of $7 million will enable us to investigate and plan full duplication from Stockton Bridge to Anna Bay. “Construction money of $60 million

F

will also be invested in full duplication from Stockton Bridge to Anna Bay following the completion of Stage Three with work to start in the next term of government, with funding from the Roads and Maritime budget.” Mr Baird said he anticipated early works would begin in mid-2016. Just two days before the Liberals’ announcement, Labor candidate for Port Stephens Kate Washington had shamed the Baird Government, claiming the Premier had completely ignored Nelson Bay Road when he announced a suite of Hunter road upgrades in February. “Maybe he is embarrassed by the local Liberals, but he always seems to forget Port Stephens,” she said. But Liberal candidate, Ken Jordan said Labor had not invested a cent in Port Stephens since 2007. “They had plenty of years to deliver these upgrades but they didn’t have the money, the plan or the commitment to build them,” he said. Mr Jordan announced further roads spending plans for the Liberal Party on Monday, with $200 million to be put towards a Hexham bypass. The M1 Pacific Motorway would be extended from Beresfield through to join up with the A1 Pacific Highway at Raymond Terrace. Mr Jordan said $7 million of the funding would be part of next year’s state budget.

Crash on M1 after boat becomes detached

Police are conducting investigations into a fatal pedestrian crash in Toronto last Saturday. About 9.10pm, emergency services were called to Kerry Street following reports a man had been hit by a car. It is believed the 45-year-old Teralba man was crossing the road when he was hit by a Nissan Patrol. He was treated at the scene by Ambulance Paramedics and taken to the John Hunter Hospital where he died. The driver of the Nissan, a 68-year-old Gwandalan man, was not injured in the collision but taken to Belmont Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing and police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner. Police are urging any witnesses to the crash that have not yet spoken to police to come forward. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/

Police are investigating a vehicle crash on the M1 near Mandalong early on Sunday. About 12:15am, a boat was being towed when it came adrift and stopped across two lanes. A Toyota Camry also travelling along the M1 crashed into the boat. Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command were contact and commenced an investigation. A female passenger was treated by Ambulance Paramedics at the scene for minor injuries. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Lake Macquarie Local Area Command on 4922 4699.

The lowdown on epilepsy

Pharmacist of Piggott’s pharmacies

However, people over 55 are now recognised as being the most vulnerable. This rapidly growing demographic group is subject to the kinds of cerebrovascular, respiratory and cardiac events that can lead to epileptic seizures. There are many causes of epilepsy and they vary with the age at which seizures begin and the

nature of the seizures. However in 50% of the cases, the cause is unknown. Many people do not understand exactly what epilepsy is. To say a person has epilepsy simply means that a person has shown a tendency to have recurring seizures. Therefore, when a person has a single seizure this does not necessarily mean that they have epilepsy. Some 10% of the population are at risk of experiencing a seizure during their lifetime, while 3-4% will go on to be diagnosed with epilepsy. You can get more detailed information on epilepsy from the Self Care Fact Card titled ‘Epilepsy’ which is available from numerous pharmacies providing the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Self Care health information. For the location of the Self Care pharmacy nearest to you, please phone the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia on 1300 369 772, You can also find this information on their website www.psa.org. au and then clicking on ‘Supporting practice’ then ‘Self Care’, and then ‘Find a Self Care pharmacy’.

Epilepsy is a common condition in our community and can develop at any age, regardless of gender or ethnic group. According to Epilepsy Australia (www. epilepsyaustralia.net), the research suggests that some 3-4% of the Australian population will develop epilepsy at some stage in their lives. At one stage it was believed that epilepsy was a disorder of the young, as it appeared most people experienced their first seizure before the age of 20.

efending champions Merewether will start as short-priced favourites against last season’s wooden spooners Stockton Raymond Terrace in the NDCA Grand Final at No.1 Sportsground this coming weekend. The semi-finals were regularly interrupted by rain however both games managed to generate results on bowler friendly wickets. At No.1 Sportsground, Stockton achieved one of the bigger upsets in recent times when they defeated minor premiers University outright by 68 runs. After being sent into bat, Stockton’s top order was soon in trouble with the run out of Jaymes Thomas seeing them slump to 5 for 22. Sam Jenkinson battled hard despite a shoulder injury to figure in partnerships with 25 and 22 with Dan Upward and Lincoln Melmeth, and nudge the total to 83. Skipper Luke Bird took three wickets for University.

D

Jenkinson finished unconquered on 23. In response University was equally in trouble with wickets falling regularly and bowled out within 23 overs for 59. Veteran quick Benn West took four wickets for the Seagulls. Stockton improved with the bat the second time around, and managed 123. Bird took four wickets to finish with match figures of 7 for 61. Set 147 to win off 39 overs, University crumbled to be all out for 79. Upward took 6 for 15 in the second innings giving him nine wickets for the match. In the other semi at Townson Oval, Merewether also managed a winning score of 83 in the first innings against Hamilton Wickham. Twins Matt and Sam Webber took five wickets each. Hamwicks struggled in reply and spearheaded by paceman Mark Cameron, who took 7 for 31, the Lions dismissed them for 57. Knights steal victory from Titans' grasp Late try maintains Newcastle's unbeaten start to the season with stern test against Panthers now looming PAUL MONFORTE

hree wins from as many matches has set up a blockbuster clash for the Knights with the Penrith Panthers on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Stadium. Newcastle left it late to snatch a 20-18 win over the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday evening with Jeremy Smith finding plenty of open space to cross for the winning try under the posts with only four minutes remaining. The match was played in slippery conditions with a number of showers passing over the ground. The Knights appeared well-placed leading 14-6 at halftime but Titans five-eighth Aidan Sezer quickly reduced the margin to two points with a converted try four minuted after the break. Sezer’s second try in the 63rd-minute left the visitors playing from behind. Earlier, the Knights’ under 20s side fought back from a 10-0 deficit at halftime to defeat the Titans 19-18. Newcastle’s NSW Cup team were defeated 18-6 by the Wyong Roos. Saturday’s match against the Panthers will kick-off at 3pm with lower-grade matches kicking off at 10.40am (under 20s) and 12.40pm (NSW Cup).

More wins on the radar as Jets climb off bottom of the ladder with victory over Western Sydney PAUL MONFORTE

resilience under pressure has given Jets fans realistic hope of more victories in the latter part of the A-League season after the 2-1 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers in Parramatta on Saturday. Newcastle led 2-0 at halftime after goals from Enver Alivodić and Lee Ki-je and had a another disallowed when Edson Montaño was ruled offside despite replays suggesting otherwise. The Jets held on grimly after Nick Kalmar scored for the Wanderers six minutes into the second half with the Wanderers desperately searching for an equaliser. Despite the Wanderers struggling for form this season, the vocal support from the home crowd ensures all matches are difficult propositions for visiting teams. The win moved the Jets off the bottom of the ladder and three points ahead of the Wanderers, however Western Sydney will play a catch-up match tonight (Wednesday) against the Brisbane Roar and can swap positions again as they have a superior goal difference.

Jets coach Phil Stubbins said his side was fighting hard to keep away from last spot. “We don’t want the wooden spoon,” Stubbins said. That is obviously something that’s in the back of the mind of the playing group. “I’m just ecstatic for the group. As a young bunch of boys in the changeroom it was a great experience for them. “To run the game out like we did, I think we showed some maturity towards the end of the game as well which is good.” The Jets return home to Hunter Stadium this weekend when they take on Adelaide United at 5pm on Sunday afternoon.
