WHAT'S this ON week The Invention of Lying Sunday, 9.30 • Seven
While following a similar path as Jim Carrey’s Liar Liar this Ricky Gervais flick is a pleasant enough distraction. In a world where everyone tells the truth, a screenwriter discovers the art of lying. While not Gervais’ funniest hour by a long shot, there are some chuckleworthy moments in this heartwarming comedy.
The Sunnyboys Individuals (Reissue) Out Now
If ever there was an Aussie band that deserved the reissue treatment it would have to be Sydney power-pop icons The Sunnyboys. Recorded just six months after delivering their groundbreaking, eponymous debut, Individuals demonstrated a maturity well beyond the years of chief songwriter Jeremy Oxley who was just 21 years old. Musically, the band had become more sophisticated layering their harmonies and toying with song structure and instrumentation. Step forward 30 years though, and an alternative mix of the album is uncovered in the archives of producer Lobby Loyde. This is essential listening for any fan of Australian music and sounds as fresh and vital as the latest Triple J whippersnappers.

• SKIN PIN (SYD) HOREGEOUS! • FROM 9PM IN THE FRONT BAR Thursday March 26
A gig to pin down Sydney three-piece Skinpin were formed out of the loveless and tiresome advertising and culling of musicians in the back of the free street press. The band has solidified into a noisy streamlined machine, built on the mutual hatred of passive music and DJs who do nothing but push buttons and prance about trying to look cool. Once formed, Skinpin took off and played as many shows in as many different places as they could find. They have since shared the stage with the likes of Hard Ons, I Heart Hiroshima, Nunchukka Superfly, Firewitch, Fangs
Of.. and Downtime. In late 2011 Skinpin released their debut album Shifting Sands, which contains their top ten most added track to community radio - Crawl. Picking up where they left off, Skinpin have just finished recording the follow-up to Shifting Sands with Wade Kieghren behind the desk at Linear Studios which is due to drop any day now. Until then, you can check out Skinpin at the Hamilton Station Hotel on Wednesday, March 25 alongside Horegeous.
Heady hip-hop Calling on all hip-hoppers, turntablists, DJs and MCs. Belmont Hotel will be the place to be this weekend when the popular Night of Rhymes event returns to the venue. an absolute cracker. Featuring the likes of Weights, B.O.S, Boxay, Savillian, Nayfe and Reality, Split Decision and Damage, pretty much all of your local hip-hop needs will be well and truly catered for. And the best thing? It’s completely free. Catch a Night of Rhymes at the Belmont Hotel on Saturday, March 28.

No land lubbers With their sophomore album expected to drop in May, Bateau Baybased indie rock revellers Sea Legs are heading to Newcastle this weekend. These guys have experienced quite an upward trajectory since hitting the scene in 2010 thanks in no small part to a rigourous touring schedule and their debut EP We Do What We Do When We Do
What We Do and the singles Take a Little For Yourself and Christopher Strong. If you saw Sea Legs open for US indie-rockers The Growlers at the Small Ballroom earlier this year, then you’d know these guys have got some serious live chops. Catch Sea Legs at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday, March 26

Rock-hard Peaches STEPHEN BISSET
L
ook out, Maitland. Peaches is coming. The Canadian electroclash rocker is due to touch down in the country for the Groovin’ the Moo tour, and she said she couldn’t wait to give the regional centres a taste of her inimitable style. “It’s going to be great,’ Peaches told TE down the line from her home in Berlin. “I haven’t been to many of the more regional areas in Australia so I’m really looking forward to infecting a lot more people in those more out-of-the-way places and hopefully, by the end of it all there will be millions of little Peaches, Peaches for me,” she laughed. When Peaches hits Maitland, punters can expect to hear quite a few cuts from her latest, soon-to-be-released album Rub - a record that she said was all about getting back to basics. “This album builds on the last four that I’ve done in that it’s all a process,” she said. “But, with this one, it’s more about stripping things back to what makes Peaches Peaches in the first place - making sure nothing is overproduced and the great
thing about technology these days is that you can make things sound quite highend while maintaining that dirty rawness - the sounds are really defined and I’m really in love with it all. There’s a lot of rawness - I love it.” Born Merril Nisker in Toronto, Canada in 1968, Peaches cut her teeth in the folk trio Mermaid Café before releasing her first solo record, albeit under her Christian name, Fancypants Hoodlum in 1995. After settling on the name Peaches (reportedly after the Nina Simone song Four Women where Simone screams “My name is Peaches”), she burst into the new millennium with her shock factor sex appeal, stripped-back electroclash beats and uncompromising rock and roll swagger and her subsequent albums The Teaches of Peaches, Fatherf**ker, Impeach My Bush and I Feel Cream, cut a swathe through the pop world with her in-yourface legacy clearly evident but never equalled in the work of mainstream “controversial” pop divas like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. If you have seen Peaches in action, you will know that aside from giving one of the hardest-rocking shows seen in quite some time she also has an inherent eye for the theatrical. Couple that with her ability to shock with her highly-literate and uncompromising lyrics that deal uncompromisingly with themes of gender identity and the fact her music has been called “party music for the outsider
I’m really looking forward to infecting a lot more people in those out-of-the-way places
generation” and it’s not surprising that she cites film director John Waters as a major influence. ‘I’m not just a bit of a fan of John Waters - I’m a huge fan,” she enthused. “The film [Waters’ 1970 underground shocker] Multiple Maniacs had a massive impact on me - there was no acting at all - just a bunch of people going for it and the purity of it all - the lack of pretence is something that has definitely stuck with me.” While her raison d’etre is obviously
razor sharp punk pop, don’t go thinking that Peaches is one dimensional. Aside from collaborating with the likes of Christina Aguilera, REM, the Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, she has also been a guest lecturer at institutions such as New York University and the University of Toronto. She has also treaded the boards as the titular character of Monteverdi’s 1607 opera L’Orfio as well as creating her one-woman rendition of the classic Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. Rechristened Peaches Christ Superstar, the production saw her perform every note, from every character herself, accompanied on piano by longtime collaborator Chilly Gonzalez. “For me it’s all about constantly challenging myself and Superstar certainly did that,” she said. “I used to sing it all in my bedroom as a kid, and there are so many people my age who identify with that record, and I guess I wanted to recapture some of that feeling of singing it all alone in your bedroom there was certainly no intention of mocking it. It as a great vocal workout and I was really forced to push myself, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” If you were lucky to get yourself a ticket, you can catch Peaches at the sold-out Maitland leg of Groovin’ the Moo on Saturday, May 9. Otherwise, you can catch her at the Hi Fi at Moore Park, Sydney on Friday, May 8.

Staying true to his roots STEPHEN BISSET
A
fter somewhat of a tumultuous twenties - with a much talked about battle with drug and alcohol addiction along with releasing some of the finest examples of American “roots” music in recent memory, with records such as Harlem River Blues, The Good Life and Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now, Justin Townes Earle has moved into a different mindset upon entering his thirties. “I guess I’m much more self-aware as an artist now than I was when I released [debut EP] Yuma” he told TE. “I think I’ve also become better at settling into myself.”
The singer-songwriter and son of alt. country legend Steve Earle, has certainly been going through a bit of a purple patch at the moment, releasing his latest two albums - the equally brilliant Single Mothers and Absent Fathers in the space of four months. He said that the plan was originally to release them as a double album, but the plans of family friend and country music legend Lucinda Williams prompted the collection to be split into two separate, yet cohesive entities. “It did start off as a double record about halfway through the first one [Single Mothers] I thought very seriously about making it a double album but then Lucinda released her double record
[Down Where The Spirit Meets the Bone] and I figured I didn’t need to be butting heads with someone like her, you know. “Also, because it was like, a couple of years since the last record came out I felt that there was a certain amount of arrogance and pretentiousness about me doing a double album so I decided to keep them separate. I mean, Lucinda can do it because she’s Lucinda.” Both highly-personal albums delve into much more interesting territory than the lazy Americana tag often applied to him would have you believe and Earle said that one of the main themes surrounding Single Mothers and Absent Fathers is that of resilience and

a sense of hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. “Absolutely - resilience is a very strong theme that runs through these songs,” he said. “I mean, on my previous records I guess I presented as someone that was not so resilient but now my life has changed in so many ways - I mean, I’m married now which has really changed my outlook and I guess I can see a light at the end of the tunnel - it may only be a pin-hole in the distance, but it’s definitely there and I’m inching slowly towards it.” Catch Justin Townes Earle at Lizotte’s on Friday, April 17.

Metal’s iron will STEPHEN BISSET
W
ith a lineup that includes Tony Foresta form neo-thrash power house Municipal Waste and Phil ‘Landphil’ Hall, also from Waste and death metallers Cannabis Corpse, Mark Bronzino from Texan thrashers ANS, Rob Skotis from Hellbear and Ryan Parrish from Darkest Hour, you’d be forgiven for thinking that hardcore/thrash/metal crossover band Iron Reagan were something of a supergoup. However, given that since their inception in 2012, they have already released two EPs, two long players and a split release with goremeisters Exhumed and undertaken a touring schedule that would make most break out in a sweat - it
becomes obvious that Iron Reagan are in it for the long haul. “Yeah, the supergroup thing does get thrown around - a little too much in my opinion,” frontman Tony Foresta told TE. “We’re just a bunch of dudes who love playing music - we’re not claiming to be the ultimate band in all of music or anything, just some guys who’ve known each other for a long time who want to play some kickass music.” Foresta added that the original intention for Iron Reagan was intended to be a local band project for a bit of fun, has
quickly morphed into something much bigger. “It was only supposed to be a local thing - I was keen to jam on some ‘80s hardcore type stuff and I was telling Phil about it, who plays bass for Waste and he was like ‘oh, I’ve got a ton of riffs and I’ve never played guitar in a band before so we got together and we jammed out a demo EP and it hit 20,000 downloads in just three days it was just crazy. “It really has been shocking the way it’s taking off - every day is a new surprise and the momentum is just awesome.”
The band is bringing that momentum, spurred on in no small part by their pummelling 2014 long player The Tyranny of The Will, to Australia next month and Foresta said that after a cancelled run with Toxic Holocaust here last year, the band couldn’t wait to crack Aussie soil. “Yeah, it was a bummer that we couldn’t get down last time, but we’ve heard great things about Australia so it’s exciting to see what it’s going to be like.” Catch Iron Reagan at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday, April 9.

Sleeping giants STEPHEN BISSET
I
t’s been nearly a decade since English folkie-punk Frank Turner went solo following the demise of his hardcore outfit Million Dead, but it seems that gamble has paid off. In spades. In that time, he has been on a constant upward curve, the momentum propelled forward in no small part by Turner’s effortless craft of song. Each record now brings with it new landmarks for the 32-year-old from Hampshire. His fourth album, 2011’s England Keep My Bones, sold more than 100,000 copies and entered the UK Charts at number 12. Its follow-up, 2013’s Tape Deck Heart, has ushered in a new level of success. So far, it has sold 200,000 copies. It entered the UK Charts at number two
and the iTunes Charts at number one. Five singles have been released from the record, each underlining Turner’s arrival as a crossover DIY star - the break-up vignette Recovery, the stirring, mandolin-flecked singalong of The Way I Tend To Be, the rousing Oh Brother and Losing Days and his Polaroid Picture EP all showcase Turner’s increasingly daring dynamism as a solo artist. Heading down under with his band The Sleeping Souls for the mammoth Byron Bay Bluesfest, Turner will be also making his way to Newcastle next month and will be backed up by Jon Snodgrass from Colorado’s Drag the River and Newcastle’s own alt.country chanteuse Jen Buxton making for one enticing gig indeed. Catch Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls at the Small Ballroom on Thursday, April 9.

THEATRE
Newcastle’s queen of drag STEPHEN BISSET
W
hen it comes to big names in the gender illusionist scene, names like Courtney Act, Carlotta and Conchita Wurst definitely spring to mind. However, there is one name that is set to soar among the best in the business - Newcastle’s own Kara Zmatiq. While many of the stereotypes surrounding drag artists are imbued in miming, Kara Zmatiq is certainly bucking that trend with powerhouse vocals and a desire to take drag from the gay clubs to the mainstream, as evidenced by the recently released debut single Queen. Already generating quite a bit of interest both here and abroad, the single is an absolutely banging ear-worm of a club number that is as danceable as it is inspirational. “It really is a song of empowerment,” Zmatiq told TE. “It is also a chronicling of what has happened to me as an entertainer - the trials and tribulations of being an enter-
tainer. It’s all about saying ‘screw what people think- just get out there and do it for yourself’ - no-one has the right to tell you that you can’t be the queen that you know you are.” Kara Zmatiq was born in late 2013 with the man behind the heels gaining considerable experience in such musical theatre productions as Cabaret, Chicago and West Side Story and while the likes of Ru Paul and Courtney Act are sources of inspiration for Zmatiq, the majority of influences are nondrag performers. “I am really influenced by music legends like Grace Jones, Madonna, Stevie Nicks and Lady Gaga and the way they are able to mesmerise a crowd as well as the theatricality of productions like Cirque du Soleil.” Having already clocked up well over 300 gigs since first hitting the stage, Zmatiq, said the plan of attack, now the single has dropped, was to push it as far and wide as possible. “That’s the idea - to just get out and play as many shows as I can to as many people as I can,” Zmatiq said. “I’m also planning to shoot a music video for Queen later in the year which will feature a lot of local Newcastle talent - the

eaton Birmingham Gardens Bowling Club a little club with the big secret - the Pit Stop Brasserie. The flavours that come out of this kitchen are as delicious as they are eclectic, putting it in the running for the best-kept secret in town. The menu, that could only be described as massive, features an array of Australian favourites, classic westernised Chinese fare and a vast selection of authentic Chinese dishes for the true Sinophiles. Given that my brief was to inspect the

brasserie’s Tuesday night $10 Schnitzel Madness special, I opted for the chicken schnitzel and I was in no way disappointed. Quite the opposite in fact. Every morsel of the perfectly cooked chicken, encased in a golden brown crumb, was an absolute delight - as was the generous portion of rich and creamy mushroom sauce. My dining partner was taken with the vast array of dishes on the Sinophile menu - a difficult choice, no doubt, but looking at the tantalising dishes on offer, a great problem to have nonetheless. She decided on the duo-cooked chickenanother true winner. This dish is not simply bits of chicken cooked twice, but rather one comprised of chicken cooked in two

different, yet equally special, ways. Firstly there was thinly-sliced chicken and cooked with enough ginger to pack a nice warm punch and balanced with garlic to build up a flavour profile that had so much depth it was impossible not to love. The ‘duo’ enters here - a second entirely different style. Chunks of chicken are left on the bone for even more flavour. Steamed, lightly fried and coated in a thick, almost creamy sauce. The stir-fried greens that were served alongside were crisp. Each component of this plate would make a great meal, each complimented and contrasted one another. Leaving the brasserie, my dining partner and I were already planning our next trip.

he Royal Exchange Theatre will play host to an evening of beguiling folk courtesy of a double header featuring Melbourne chanteuse Marta Pacek (pictured) and Canadian trio, The Jessica Stuart Few. Over the last few years, Marta Pacek has drifted between North America and Australia with her guitar - the “modern day gypsy” delighting audiences with her debut long player Rebel Baby, and 2014’s Voodoo Dolls and False Alarms. After beginning her career writing, recording and touring with Mark Seymour, Marta has gone on to win various music awards and secure worldwide TV and film placements. Live, this lady will have you under her spell when she takes to the stage. If you have never witnessed a Japanese koto in action, then Canada’s awardwinning The Jessica Suart Few will show you how it’s done. Living in Japan as a child and growing up with a Koto master for a mother, Stuart’s innovative take on the instrument has put tradi-
tional Asian sounds next to double bass, drums and three-part harmonies in a compelling contemporary singer-songwriter context. Her beguiling vocals and signature songwriting (often compared to that of Joni Mitchell), coupled with The JS Few’s upbeat fusion of folk, soul, jazz and rock has seen the trio gain worldwide critical acclaim - garnering rave reviews, international airplay, a Top 40 single, Don’t Ya, in Japan and numerous awards. Renowned for their dynamic live performances, The Jessica Stuart Few have graced the main stages of Festivals in Canada, Japan, Germany and America, and have performed alongside the likes of Jamie Cullum, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Bruce Cockburn and members of The Barenaked Ladies among others. Catch Marta Pacek and The Jessica Stewart Few at the Royal Exchange Theatre on Thursday, April 2.

REVIEW
Wednesday 25 March 2015 « the newcastle post
COLUMN Garth Weiley
Big Eyes (Rated M)
Cinema this week turns to one of the best known stories of all time Cinderella. The latest version is a magical experience for both young and young at heart. Expectations are that there will be many a little girl donning ball gowns and presenting at the cinema dressed just like the girl from the fairy tale. Cinderella is a live-action retelling of the classic fairy tale about a servant stepdaughter who wins the heart of a prince. Aimed at the same audience that loved Frozen, the new hotly anticipated Disney short, Frozen Forever, will also feature in the pre-show leading up to the Cinderella main event. Will Ferrell returns to the big screen this week in the comedy Get Hard alongside Kevin Hart. The story surrounds a conman who is caught and has to prepare for life behind bars.
Cinema’s dark lord Tim Burton directs this dramatic look into the life and work of real life artist Margaret Keane. Finding fame in the late 1950s with her portraits of wide-eyed children, Keane’s success comes at a significant cost as her husband Walter claims credit for her work. Amy Adams puts in a typically measured and well-formed performance as Margaret, but it is Christoph Waltz who steals the show as her Jekyll and Hyde hubby, oozing schmaltzy charm one minute, burning down houses the next. The fact that this film is based on a true story makes for compelling viewing and in true Tim Burton fashion, every scene is visually perfect. But there’s something about this film that is just a little off and, in my opinion, it lies in the balance of drama and Burton-brand dark comedy. Although played well by Waltz, the character of Walter seems far too comedic for the drama unfolding around him.

EVENT CINEMAS, GLENDALE [2.5/5] While few of the recent films in Liam Neeson’s canon have failed to live up to the hype of the original Taken film (Non Stop, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Taken 2 & 3 et al) this latest in the “Neeson with a gun” genre, while predictable, does have some redemptive elements. Teaming up, once again with Non Stop and Unknown director, Jaume Collet-Serra, Neeson stars as Brooklyn mafia hit man Jimmy Conlon. Conlon is best friends with the big boss Jimmy Maguire (Ed Harris) until his estranged son Michael, witnesses Jimmy’s son commit a brutal murder. As is the case with such things, the mob put a hit out on Conlon Jr. and Neeson goes up against a predictable litany of nameless thugs, crooked cops and contract killers across one blood-soaked night. Honestly, when will these goons get it through their head not to tangle with Liam Neeson?

ARTS
the newcastle post » Wednesday 25 March 2015
A breathtaking display STEPHEN BISSET
U
K craftsman Elliot Hall certainly knows his way around enamel. This weekend, Newcastle art connoisseurs will find out just how well when the world’s only wholly freehand-painted enamels maker comes to Newcastle for an exclusive event. Attendees will enjoy an exclusive opportunity to covet one-off enamels on copper which appeal to a wide range of tastes with designs suitable to both first time collectors and connoisseurs (ranging from $150 up to $5,000 per piece). Historic artist proofs will also be available which is the original enamel painted by the artist, and is then used as a reference for the following limited edition. There is only ever one artist proof for each design which is marked with the initials A.P and the date on which it was completed. Hall told TE he was excited to be returning to Australia given the considerable growth in the enamels export market in the country. “The export market to Australia has
been so successful over the past couple of years and there has been considerable interest from Australian collectors,” he said. “I think this is due to the fact that there is a greater appreciation for the level of detail and quality because it isn’t as common in Australia whereas, in England people are more used to seeing enamels.” Hall’s enamels are all hand-produced and hand-painted by a small workforce based in Worcestershire in the UK and the level of detail they are able to achieve is breathtaking. His collections are renowned for their stunning attention to detail, bespoke shapes in the form of vases, goblets, eggs and trinket boxes. True to the 18th century tradition, enamelled onto copper, these freehandpainted masterpieces are painted both inside and out without the use of any outline transfers. “The way we manufacture our enamels hasn’t changed since the 1800s - there is certainly no cutting corners or mass producing,” he said. “The mastery of the artists is just amazing - having done five year apprenticeships in some of the best porcelain houses
in the world with some of them spending three years painting nothing but leaves before they were able to paint a flower - in this day and age that level of craftsmanship is something that’s becoming rarer and rarer.” Hall, the fourth generation in the Halls Enamels lineage, added that his artistry and passion for it had been passed down through the generations of his family.
“We started off as coppersmiths making copper kettles and bed warming pans and, as time went on and people no longer needed things like bed warming pans, my father moved into making 18th century enamels - he really was a pioneer and I’m happy to be carrying on that legacy.” Elliot Hall will be at Old Technology, Newcastle on Sunday, March 29.
