Homes excluded from review MAJOR Pagham housing schemes in Pagham will be left out of a review of a land use blueprint. Arun District Council is set to take a fresh look at its local plan which allocates sites for development. But the four locations in Pagham- where some 1,200 dwellings are expected to be built - will be excluded, along with 2,000-plus homes in Barnham. Arun's planning policy sub-committee agreed an update of the development
management policies in the local plan should start and be followed by an update of the complete plan. Its recommendations to all council members next month, however, stopped short of wiping out its allocation of largescale housing developments. Cllr David Huntley (I, Pagham) told Tuesday's sub-committee meeting the decision went against the motion of no confidence in the local plan which was

agreed by councillors in November. "That was decided on the grounds it's building large quantities of houses on a coastal plain which could flood in the next 50-100 years. We seem to be ignoring all of that. The problem is the housing figures are too high. Perhaps we ought to get that target alleviated. "We are ignoring the problem of climate change and the juggernaut of building on the coastline is trying to progress," he said.
Arun's current local plan covers the years 2011-2031 and requires 1,000 dwellings a year to be built on average in line with a government target. But the past two years have seen 704 and 603 constructed. Mr Neil Crowther, Arun's group head of planning, said planning law meant the council had to review its plan because so few homes had been built. Doing nothing would risk the government Turn to page 2

A BOLLARD which has been missing for years has been replaced in months by a Bersted group. The recently-formed Bersted Shops Business Forum Group has succeeded in getting the new bollard installed. It has been put outside Royals fish and chips bar on Royal Parade at the junction of Central Avenue and Chichester Road. The forum is chaired by Bersted parish councillor Rob Outen. He said: "It is fantastic the new bollard has been put in. "The old one has been missing for nine to ten years and it's great that the replacement has gone in just four months after our first meeting." He paid tribute to the parish, district and county councils for their work in making arrangements for the new bollard. Its absence meant motorists were able to take a short cut at the junction across the pavement and the lay-by outside the businesses. The situation had led to vehicles crashing into Royals and also potentially put pedestrians at risk. The forum was set up by Cllr Outen, with the parish council's backing, to bring the business owners together to enable them to have a joint voice to solve
From page 1 stepping in and imposing a plan on the council. Scrapping the current housing sites would leave Arun open to legal challenges from developers and the land owners, he said. He said: "The frustration the council has in terms of the unrealistic targets being set which are outside of its control is fully understood by officers. "There is no getting away from the fact that there will be difficult and unpopular decisions around housing numbers and sites at some point during the process of reviewing and updating a local plan." Cllr Martin Lury (LD, Bersted), the council's cabinet member for housing services, said: "The major issue to focus on is that we have 4,000 homes that have gained planning permission.
problems which were affecting their companies. Its second meeting was on Wednesday night. Cllr Outen said all 18 businesses had been invited. The initial meeting saw eight representatives attend. "Getting the bollard installed shows them the forum can get improvements made," he said, "and, if they have got concerns, there is a real chance they can be sorted out. "One of the business owners told me the forum was something they had been calling for for 30 years." Cllr Outen, who joined the parish council last May, is also becoming involved with the revived 39 Club in Bognor Regis. The former well-known youth club has been brought back for the past few years to provide young people with leisure activities in the town centre. It meets in a section of the Find It Out centre in Church Path, off Glamis Street. "I think the original club started in 1958 and everyone in the town aged between 30 and 60 seems to have had some sort of involvement with it," he added. "I'm looking forward to getting involved with that and seeing how I can move it forward. There's a massive need for things for young people to do in the town."
We can't force them to be delivered. That's the issue we have all the time." Updating the development management policies would take account of the worsening climate change of the past ten years, he said. Cllr Isabel Thurston (G, Arundel) said: "We can't do nothing because we have our strategic objective around climate change." Cllr Ricky Bower (C, E Preston) said: "I have always said that any housing we had to have should be located in those parts of the district that require improvements in infrastructure because putting in that infrastructure helps to alleviate the pain for the local community." The new policies will also seek to boost social housing numbers. The work to create them will cost £1m.

Pagham crucial flood prevention plan is put back f Barty Hawkins at Felpham Community College
Barty's carol fundraises for very deserving cause By Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk A CHRISTMAS classic has been revived to help raise money for West Sussex’s only Womens’ Centre. After hearing about the work of Bognor Regis based My Sisters’ House, Barty Hawkins decided to use his musical gift and re-record the classic carol, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Barty, 12, first heard about the women's centre while at a church service at St Mary's, Felpham. He said: “I came to church one morning and the head of the charity was there talking about her charity and all about the stories of the women who were there. "I just thought it was a really, really great cause. “I really liked the tune and it talks about how the son of God will bring peace and hope to people’s hearts. “So far we’ve raised about £825, my target is £2,000. My friends and
teachers have been so supportive and some have given money. “I would like to do something in the future for a charity, either My Sisters’ House again, or for a different one. I’m not sure yet though.” Barty’s father, Simon, is a music producer, and helped Barty with the recording of the track. “My dad has all the recording equipment, he’s a producer,” Barty said. “If he wasn’t musical at all, I definitely wouldn’t know as much as I do or love music as much as I do now. I have just done my grade 6 exam for LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). “I love to sing. I do singing outside of school and inside school. I’m part of the school choir and I do other things like musical theatre and drama. I would love to be an opera singer when I’m older. “I had already done two songs before for charity, for Compassion. That was a couple of years ago.
Julie Budge, founder and chief executive of My Sisters’ House CIC, in London Road, said: "We are absolutely delighted that Barty chose us, as a young boy who happened to listen to one of our talks, and has now raised almost £1,000. His target is £2,000 so hopefully he will achieve that. “It will make a massive difference to MSH and will be used for front-line services. It is a beautiful heartwarming recording that gives hope at Christmas.” Barty's mum, Sandra, said: "I was so proud of him. He's been singing since he could talk and wanted to do something for other people rather than just another competition. "Hearing about the work of My Sisters' House was really striking. Hearing the stories of the women and how its stuff that could affect any woman, from any background. It was lovely to hear how this charity was helping them." To help reach his £2,000 target, donations can be given on localgiving. org/fundraising/o-come/

tern population, a compensation measure to create a tern island with a management plan to look after it and the installation of a tide gauge. Pagham Flood Defence first applied for planning permission in September, 2015. Its six-figure scheme to split the spit by forming a channel to re-create the Pagham Harbour mouth has been seen as the best way to stop the spit’s growth continuing to erode the beach of its shingle and put homes at risk. The work can only take place during a few weeks each spring and the autumn to avoid disturbing the birds in the harbour – which benefits from a host of legal protections - and especially the little terns which nest on the spit. This has led to Natural England’s objection to the latest plans. Angela Marlow, of its Sussex and Kent team, has told Arun that Pagham Flood Defence’s current plans were not good enough to ensure the little terns were about to breed undisturbed. She says in a letter to the council: “The requested conditions were designed and agreed in the original application…to enable the local planning authority to grant permission and avoid additional adverse impacts and to compensate for the adverse impact due to loss of special protection area supportive habitats. “If the conditions were implemented as agreed, Natural England fully support the approach, and further request would be unnecessary. “However, our advice is that the proposed amendments requested in this (application) do not comply with a number of conditions, such that it is likely to result in further adverse effect to the special protection area and damage to the site of special scientific interest. “We would advise that more information is needed regarding these changes and the request to amend the timing of the tern habitat delivery, the separate phasing of construction and new access routes are of particular concern.”

A CRUCIAL flood defence scheme for Pagham has been delayed. Residents who are seeking planning permission to cut through the off-shore Church Norton Spit have been forced to put their plans on hold. Mr Geoff Barter, a director of the Pagham Flood Defence Community Interest Company (CIC), has withdrawn its latest proposal to provide the time to supply more information with its request. He told Arun District Council, which will decide the application: “I will reapply in the near future, hopefully with all the necessary reports.” The need for more facts has been prompted by an objection by Natural England to the updated scheme. But Mr Barter has said to Arun that Natural England was misinformed as it had been when the danger to housing in Pagham was created by the spit’s growth in the early years of this century. He wrote: “In 2007, the district council wrote a report saying that if the spit were allowed to grow, we would lose homes. Natural England wanted to wait and see what happened. The result was that homes were threatened, people were terrified, Arun had to spend a lot of taxpayers’ money protecting their homes, and still the beach is suffering from that delay. The spit has advanced further than it had in 2007. “This planning permission…has shown that the need to protect the environment must be balanced by the need to protect people and their homes. We ask Natural England to work with us to get the spit cut in a way that will protect the people and property of Pagham and also maintain the incredible diversity of nature we have around Pagham Harbour.” The latest application by Pagham Flood Defence sought to prove six of the conditions set when Arun backed its overall plan in June, 2017, had been fulfilled. These included an archaeological investigation, proposed mitigation measures to protect the little

f Nick Gibb returns to the Commons this week
MP back in government MP Nick Gibb has resumed his recordbreaking ministerial role after his reelection to represent Bognor Regis. The MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton has returned to his longstanding position as the minister for schools standards. His re-appointment by prime minister Boris Johnson continues Mr Gibb's role in the government's education work. He first became a minister in May, 2010, in the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government. "I'm delighted to have been reappointed as minister for school standards, continuing the government's drive to raise standards in schools, improve pupil behaviour and to level up school funding," he said. Mr Gibb was replaced by a Lib Dem minster in the summer of 2012 but
returned in July, 2014. He has kept the role since to become the country's longest-serving schools minister. He has served under three prime ministers and five education secretaries. He said, as he resumed his seat in the House Commons, that he was honoured and privileged to have again been chosen by electors in his constituency in last week's general election. "Britain has one of the oldest and most successful democracies in the world and we all need to ensure we protect that democracy and ensure it continues to command the support of the whole country," he added. "The priority now is to ensure we implement the result of the EU referendum by passing into law the EU Withdrawal Bill." See page 10
Police praised for drug prevention By Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk POLICE have rewarded the Arun Prevention Team for their work in disrupting the work of drug dealers. The Good Work Recognition Award was given to Lee Matthews, a senior anti-social behaviour caseworker at Arun District Council, PC Steve Self, PC Liz Nelson and Sgt Danny West from Sussex Police, for their joint work in using anti-social behaviour legislation. Lee said: “I’m very proud to have worked jointly with the police on this issue. This is something which affects our communities and we will continue to work in partnership to disrupt this activity.” The ceremony for the Sussex Police West Sussex division awards, held in Crawley, recognised officers from across the county for their work to combat, target and disrupt county lines drug activity. This refers to the phone numbers or lines dedicated to the trafficking of drugs into rural areas and smaller towns.
Cllr Gill Yeates, Arun District Council’s cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “We are delighted to see the work of this fantastic team recognised by this award. “They are determined to stop dealers taking advantage of vulnerable people in our society, and are committed to tackling drug trafficking to make Arun a safer place for everyone.” Other issues being tackled by the team include cuckooing, a form of crime in which drug dealers take over the home of a vulnerable person in order to use it as a base for drug supply. Robin Wickham, group head of community wellbeing at Arun District Council, said: “We’re delighted that Lee has been recognised for his hard work and perseverance working with the team to safeguard some of the most vulnerable people in our community. “Lee’s knowledge of the legislation and experience of these issues have greatly assisted the team in disrupting criminal activity in the district.”

County Council has been identified as a corporate improvement partner to make sure the organisation is able to put in place the right processes. West Sussex council leader Paul Marshall said: “The department's report is painful to read and shows the scale of the problems we face. We acknowledge and fully accept the recommendations. “I apologise to the children and families we support and council staff –right across the authority – for failing to create the environment where our children’s services can run well and effectively." “I want to personally thank our staff – in particular our children’s services staff – for their professionalism and dedication to our residents during what has been an uncertain time. “We accept and understand the secretary of state’s decision. I want what is best for the children we support in West Sussex.”

A REPORT into West Sussex County Council’s ability to improve services for children in the county has been published by the Department for Education, recommending children’s services at the council be moved into an independent trust. The department appointed John Coughlan to carry out a report into children’s services in West Sussex following an ‘inadequate’ Ofsted inspection published last May. In response to the report, the Secretary of State has decided the best way to run county children’s services would be in the form of a children’s trust. John Coughlan, chief executive of Hampshire County Council, has been reappointed as commissioner for West Sussex children’s services to lead this process over the next 12 months. Hampshire Council has been announced as an improvement partner to drive forward the specific improvements to services. East Sussex

` Solar power A COUNTY-WIDE scheme to promote the use of solar power may be joined by Arun District Council. The council is set to sign up to Solar Together West Sussex, a collective initiative run by West Sussex County Council with district and borough councils around the county. The aim is to help residents access renewable technology and drive down the cost through collective buying. Taking part will be in line with the environment and climate change strategy Arun has adopted. The final decision about joining will be made by Arun's cabinet member for collective services, Cllr Matt Stanley.

Performers put on a show for visitors By Lotte Pegler lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk SHOPPERS were kept entertained as they explored the town thanks to festive actors wandering the streets. Organised by the Bognor Regis Business Improvement District, the streets of Bognor Regis were fittingly festive on Saturday and Sunday, with professional street performers from Fools Paradise and the Bognor Regis Celebration Jazz Band. From roller skating presents, to the Ice Queen herself, people of all ages enjoyed the entertainment put on by BID. BID chairman Jason Passingham said: "Bognor Regis weather is always a bit unpredictable so it was great that so many people came out to enjoy the
range of performers over the weekend. "The increased footfall trends for Saturday are really positive, and we're delighted that so many people came into the town centre for a bit of festive fun. "We hope the increased numbers of people coming into town has benefited the Bognor Regis businesses who provide the event through BID, and has given the Bognor Regis community and visitors a really positive experience in town." Heather Allen, Bognor Regis BID coordinator, said: “It was fantastic. We were worried about the weather but it was fine, and people still filled the streets. “Down the road, we had the Community Forest event, this time with the organisers of Blakefest. It was a great showcase of the art we have in our town."
Much loved race returns AS Boxing Day draws near, the Pagham Pram Race team are readying for another big event. This year’s race with be the 74th, and is set to be bigger and better than ever. The three-mile course encourages participants to be as creative as possible, from Star Wars to Barbie Girls. A spokesman for the organisers said: “All this fun is in aid of local charities who have been recipients of spectator generosity for many years. Much of the thousands of pounds are raised on the day. "Come along on Boxing Day 2019 at 11am and have fun while helping others. “There are numerous categories to enter, from fancy dress, race class, pub
team, ladies and disabled class. "Or, if you are willing, come along as a helper and rattle the buckets to raise the funds, you will be most welcome.” Participants drink a pint of beer at every juncture, including The Mill, The Bear, The Lamb Inn and Pagham Beach Café, to return with their legs unsteady either from beer or exertions. The pram race began in 1946 and has continued to grow ever since, now attracting people from across the world. Last year they raised just short of £17,000 in aid of local charities which have been the recipients of spectators' generosity for many years.

` Housing grant FUNDS to tackle poor housing landords are being sought from the government by Arun District Council. The council is to join a bid for a grant from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to be spent on the private housing sector. The application, if it is approved by Cllr Matt Stanley, Arun's cabinet member for technical services, will be for some ÂŁ25,000. It will be used for a range of work. and will seek to improve standards for tenants of privately rented housing. Arun group head of technical services, Nat Slade, says in a report the grant - if it is received - will be used to identity houses in multiple occupation, provide energy efficiency information and calculate the savings to the NHS from intervening in the private housing sector. He adds: "This information will better inform the private sector housing team about where highrisk properties are located enabling targeted investigations, interventions and enforcement action to take place in accordance with the relevant enforcement policy." The bid will be made with councils in Adur, Chichester, Crawley and Worthing.

Artful plan to improve town
DOZENS of people have taken the chance to have their say about putting art at the heart of Bognor Regis. They filled in a survey with their view on installing a William Blake-inspired sculpture on the town's seafront. A maquette of the proposed work, Glad Day, by acclaimed sculptor Vincent Gray was on show at last weekend's Spirit of the South exhibition. The Big Blake Project, which organises the annual Blake Fest, staged the event to begin to gather opinions about the possible unique public work of art. Olivia Stevens, the project manager of the public artwork steering group working with the project, said: "It's the first time we have been involved in an exhibition such as this. "We wanted to get people talking about public art - and we have achieved that. "We've asked them to tell us what they think about Vincent's idea. We want to raise the profile of what art can do for the regeneration of Bognor Regis. "If we can get this sculpture up on the seafront, it will be a real talking point for those who live here and those who visit. "We want our sculpture to be eyecatching and to be a talking point. "We have very few pieces of public art in the town and want to place it at the heart of the community. "William Blake lived in Felpham for three years and it was the only place he lived outside London. "He wrote the words which became Jerusalem here and he is a famous figure known internationally." The finished bronze sculpture, if Mr Gray's design is accepted, will be 16m high.
It is unknown how much the finished sculpture will cost. But Ms Stevens said funding would be sought from national bodies once approvals for the sculpture were being sought from the necessary public authorities. "Commissioning any piece of public artwork is a slow process," she added. "But, if all goes well, we could be looking at two to three years for the sculpture to be installed." The exhibition in the Community Forest in York Road was visited by some 200 people last Saturday alone. It also featured dozens of work by Marie Paul, Melissa Barrett and Sarah Gillings. Some of the art was curated by the Capital Project Trust. A group of those involved with the exhibition are pictured below. Town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall also spoke about the importance of art to the town. Free face painting proved to be very popular.

FIRST timer Andrew Griffith has been elected to represent Arundel and South Downs residents in Parliament. The Conservative politician, pictured middle right, received 57.9 per cent of the votes on Friday morning, with Liberal Democrat candidate, Alison Bennett, getting 13,045. Mr Griffith acknowledged his predecessor, Nick Herbert, who represented the constituency for 15 years until standing down last month, and thanked him for his support. Mr Griffith said: “It’s an enormous privilege to be elected to represent such a fantastic part of the country. “I pledge to serve every resident of Arundel and South Downs to the very best of my ability. I have a lot to learn but hopefully also a lot to offer. “Tonight, the Conservative party, under Boris Johnson, has won a historic fourth victory by a significant margin because its instincts and values were the most in tune with the voters. “The British people have elected a parliament to deliver what they voted for back in 2016, to get Brexit done, to unleash Britain's potential and to deliver on their other priorities. "Starting next week, that’s precisely what the new government which I support will be doing.” Labour candidate, Bella Sankey, said it had been a catastrophic night for the Labour Party. She said: “I ask Mr Griffith to serve every member of his constituency, including those that have felt under represented and under served by his predecessor and who do not feel represented by his leader. "We must not allow ourselves to be consumed by political parlour games, or in-fighting because we have work to do.” Full results: Andrew Griffith (C) 35,566; Alison Bennet (LD) 13,045; Bella Sankey (L) 9,722; Isabel Thurston (G) 2,519; Robert Wheal (I) 556. Blue is the colour as town remains solid Tory territory
NICK GIBB was in seventh heaven after his re-election as MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. The Conservative politician again took his seat in the Commons this week following his latest polling success. He gained more than three times the number of votes of his nearest challenger to win his seventh general election in a sequence which began in 1997. He said: "I am just very keen to get Brexit delivered. I want to get it done as quickly as possible. "I want the withdrawal bill to be law by January 31 and we will be out of the EU. We can then focus on our future negotiations with them and sort out the details. "There will still be some disputes but at least we will be out of the EU. "We can start to bring the country together again and tackle other issues such as 20,000 extra police officers, looking at the NHS and tougher prison sentences for those who commit serious crimes." The official declaration the Parliamentary seat was again true blue was made by the deputy returning officer, Nigel Lynn, at around 4.30am on Friday after the count at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham. Mr Gibb's runner-up, as usual, was Labour. Its candidate, Alan Butcher, was the only other hopeful to gain a five-figure vote. He said: "I am very pleased that, yet again, people have turned to us as the main challenger to the Conservatives in this constituency. This is the fifth time in the last general elections this has been the case. It breaks the myth the Lib Dems say all the time that they are the only party that can take on the Conservatives. "There is a strong Labour following here. We just have to get people to turn out for us in local elections as well as the national ones."
For the Lib Dems, Francis Oppler was standing in his third general election running. He said: "I am disappointed with the national situation. "I do feel that the party policy on revoking Article 50 (to leave the EU) has not paid off and that we should have stayed with calling for a people's vote. "Despite what has happened, the Lib Dems' share of the vote has still gone up in some places, and very significantly. "But the Conservatives have benefited from the near collapse of the Labour vote." Green Party candidate Carol Birch gained comfort from her increased support. She said: "I am really pleased because we have more than doubled our vote from the last election. But I am concerned we are now going to have Brexit and I am worried what that will mean for the environment and our future relationship with the EU. I don't think it's going to resolve the housing and transport situation for us locally." David Kurten said he was disappointed with UKIP's result - and warned voters the Tories' European treaty deal might not deliver the Brexit they wanted. "We will still remain in some European institutions for at least a year, if not three. But at least we don't have a Marxist Labour government under Jeremy Corbyn," he said. Independent Andrew Elston said he hoped his place on the ballot paper would prompt some voters to think about politics anew and look at them from a spiritual viewpoint. Full results: Nick Gibb (C) 32,521; Alan Butcher (L) 10,018, Francis Oppler (LD) 5,645, Carol Birch (G) 1,826; David Kurten (UKIP) 846, Andrew Elston (I) 367. Turnout: 66.41 per cent.

There's no place like Chichester theatre Theatre review By Kelly Wickham THe Wizard of Oz Until December 29 Chichester Festival Theatre, Oaklands Park, Chichester PO19 6AP 01243 781312 box.office@cft.org.uk www.cft.org.uk IT'S A classic Christmas tale and celebrating 80 years since the film was released, it was no surprise to see THe Wizard of Oz cropping up at theatres across the regions. THere may be the familiar storyline, the black and white beginning, the famous songs which the audience can't help but sing along to but the whole piece combines together in a fresh and energised way with a spectacular cast and visually a feast for the eyes. Ella O'Keeffe, as Dorothy, stole the show, holding notes in the famous Over THe Rainbow and mimicking Judy Garland's expressions to a tee. Another popular character was Richard Chapman, playing the Cowardly Lion and Zeke. His humour brought something different to the stage, along with Alife Scott's clever slapstick movements as Hunk and the Scarecrow. Toto was an incredible addition with "handler" Ellie Dickens cleverly using the puppet dog on stage, bringing him to life in every scene, in milling about sniffing at objects and people in the background. It's hard to move away from the popular film with older women playing the parts of Aunt Em and Miss Gultch and the Wicked Witch
of the West. Florence Clarke ,playing the latter character, just lacked an added pinch of wickedness while Evie Carter was exceptional as Glinda (the Good Witch of the North) in comparison to her role as Aunt Em. Luc Oratis is a complete natural on stage, playing both Professor Marvel and the Wizard of Oz with complete A huge cast with the munchkins, crows, trees, poppies, snowmen, Ozians, Jitterbugs, Monkeys and Winkies - every member of the cast giving 100 per cent at all time. If ever there was a Christmas performance to be proud of directing, Lucy Betts should be overly satisfied with this production.

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK
December 20-26 IT won’t have escaped even the more bah humbug among us that Christmas is well and truly upon us, a wallow in Last Christmas - a jumble of romantic comedy, holiday fantasy, and love letter to the music of George Michael - just what the season’s greetings doctor ordered. Emma THompson co-wrote and stars in this sweet, magical love story with echoes of everything from “Love, Actually” to “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Christmas shop elf worker Kate (Emilia Clarke) harrumphs her way around London in her costume, not feeling the spirit, but when too-good-to-be true Tom walks into her life will she learn to live and love? Don’t miss, either, the magical Shaun the Sheep latest escapade in Farmageddon. Shaun is on a mission to show friendship to aliens who crash-lands on Mossy Bottom Farm, the greedy farmer having other plans: to build a UFO amusement park to cash in on the crash. THis high chuckle quotient and warmhearted feel-good factor is a must. One of the most delightful biggest little documentaries you’ll see this year is THe Biggest Little Farm, which charts the move from LA for the Chester family to the countryside to transform a barren orchard into a thriving landscape, biodiversity at the forefront. All ages will love the supporting cast of sheep dogs, ducks and pigs. Midway tells the story of one of the most pivotal WW2 battles between the American fleet and the imperial Japanese Army that’s vividly and viscerally rendered, with all the entertainment value of a big, old-fashioned war movie, cutting back and forth between the home front and front line. With Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid and Aaron Eckhart. Make the most of the festive Performance events this week: THe Nutcracker (Dec 22) from
the Royal Opera House, an unforgettable production with the magical Tchaikovsky score and the memorable musical, Guys and Dolls from 1955, starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons (Dec 21). A further festive treat is the New Year’s Eve concert live from the Berlin Philharmoniker. THe cinema wishes all its enthusiastic patrons a very happy festive holiday. THere are no films on December 25 or 26, many diverse films, screened from December 27, including New Year’s Day. Book for Frozen II; Andrew Lloyd Webber’s magical Cats; Ordinary Love starring Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson; Downton Abbey and the lauded Marriage Story. LOUISA May Alcott’s seminal 19th-century novel gets the big screen, and big-named, adaptation with which to inspire a whole new generation of little women and little men, the world over. Lady Bird writer-director Greta Gerwig draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, to craft a timely and timeless take on Little Women that unfolds as the author's alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. Set in the shadow of the American Civil War, Little Women focuses on the March family, whose young women have ideas, wants, and aspirations which are deemed outside the realms of societal and familial expectations. Although first released a century and a half ago, the themes are just as relevant today, with issues of equal pay, outdated gender roles and the #MeToo movement. What’s more, the cast is well
Wizard success at town's panto Theatre review By Lotte Pegler THe Wizard of Oz Until January 4 The Regis Centre, Belmont Street, Bognor Regis, West Sussex, PO21 1BL 01243 861010 info@regiscentre.co.uk www.alexandratheatre.co.uk worth getting excited for as Saoirse Ronan teams up with Gerwig again to star as Jo March, with Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, and Eliza Scanlen portraying her sisters Meg, Amy, and Beth. Man of the hour, Timothée Chalamet, is set to make you swoon as their handsome neighbour, Laurie, while Laura Dern and Meryl Streep star as March family matriarchs.
AUDIENCES explored the colourful land of Oz with the help of a lively cast and the odd appearance of Toto, the Chihuahua. With the quintessential hisses and boos for the evil Wicked Witch of the West, audiences of all ages can enjoy the step back in time. And what better time to embrace the iconic show than 80 years after its debut on our screens? A talented cast of actors, dancers and singers shine on stage, with the help of a hypnotic set and light display.
But the real stars of the show were the Munchkins. Made up of 100 children from around the area. With children from Art of Dance and Fitness, Arabesque School of Performing Arts, THe Rosemary Bell Academy of Dance, and Razzamataz Bognor, dressed in their finest plant-pot hats and wigs, their sheer excitement and energy alone is worthy of a watch. Drew Donnell, as the Wicked Witch, provides an envious sense of sophistication to the show as he struts in his stiletto black boots, embracing any boos that come his way. Of course, what is the Wizard of Oz without the perfect Dorothy - and Chichester woman Katie Bennett sure does deliver. Equipped with her Totos, Taff and Ralph, she is the perfect heroine for the tale. Without a doubt, the classic comedy-factor is provided by the trio of Jamie Bannerman, Allan Mirren and Jamie Lemetti playing the Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow. Giggles were non-stop from the children in the audience, as well as the adults, with humour fit for the younger onlookers, as well as a few more grown-up jokes thrown in.

DENISE KELLY A passionate and motivated 'health expert/nutritionist.
Keep well this Christmas with top ten vitamin foods www.denisekelly.co.uk Tel: 07730671436 Email: denise@thewellbeingcompanyltd.com HAVING just returned from the most fantastic week in the USA, I have so much to share with you all over the coming weeks. I have learned massive amounts of the latest health information, met the most incredible people and feel even more inspired now to share ‘all things health’ than ever before. If you want to stay happy and healthy during this festive period, then listen up. We all know how important vitamin C is, but do you really know how important getting this essential nutrient is? It’s a powerful antioxidant, helps maintain blood vessels and cartilage, and is thought to lower cancer risk. If you feel jaded after a few too many Christmas bubbles, then loading up on your vitamin C could just be the trick to perkier skin and brighter eyes, giving the illusion of glowing health! Buying a vitamin C powder is a good idea to keep you on top of the game this time of year. Personally, I like Bio-care products, and the vitamin C powder also contains magnesium which helps to keep your body calm and relaxed. If you really want to cover all ‘health challenges’ this time of year, a B12 liquid supplement could also be super helpful. Add them both to half a glass of water, drink daily (for about six weeks) and off you go! But don’t just rely on supplements. You can get such a great supply of everything you need in the foods that you choose. Here are my top ten best natural foods to drench your beautiful bodies in one of the best vitamins that keeps us well…. High vitamin C foods to include daily in your diets: 1. Guavas – not only does this fruit have high levels of vitamin C, it also contains Manganese, which helps the body absorb other key nutrients from the food that we eat. THe potassium in Guavas also helps normalise blood pressure. 2. Kiwifruit – high in vitamin C, this Chinese gooseberry boosts wound-healing, helps maintain bowel health and gives you a kick of antioxidants to take you through the harshest of winters! 3. Bell peppers – a cup of chopped bell peppers contains nearly three times more vitamin C than an orange. THey also contain high amounts of vitamin A to protect your eyes, too! 4. Strawberries – helping boost your heart and bran health, this delicious fruit offers a potent mix of vitamin C, flavonoids, folate and antioxidants. Snack on these all day long. 5. Oranges – the classic vitamin C fix, oranges make up a significant portion of your daily needs. Juice or eat three oranges a day for your skin, eye, heart
and immune protection. 6. Papaya – anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and high in calcium, potassium, and vitamin A. Yummy as a daytime snack! 7. Broccoli – add to every dish, have raw or lightly steamed. Loaded with fibre, antioxidants, iron and vitamin C, this power food vegetable helps build strong bones and reduces blood pressure. 8. Brussel sprouts – everywhere in the supermarkets at the moment, so take advantage of their goodness. You may not love them, but these little green balls are loaded with fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K, and help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. 9. Kale – boosting wellbeing, this chlorophyll rich vegetable is so high in vitamin C and iron, having at least a handful daily will add to the best immune protection possible. 10. – Snow peas – rich in vitamin B1, B2, B3, C and K this is a vegetable you cannot do without. High in fibre and folate, snow peas help prevent inflammation, cancer, heart disease, scurvies and digestive issues. Snow peas can make a delicious and quick snack for your Christmas guests…what should you do with them? • Have them as a raw snack with carrots, cucumber and home-made humous! Simply chop both the top and bottom tale off and then remove the stringy bit at the sides. Serve with your favourite dips. • Quick steam – they only need about three minutes over boiling water. Add them to any dish or eat on their own drizzled in olive oil and chilli flakes. • You could even satisfy your sweet tooth with cooked snow peas and carrots topped with honey. Pop into the oven for 25 mins and roast. Try adding some sesame seeds for more texture. • Fried rice and snow peas, with broccoli and leeks make a delicious quick stir-fry. Add Himalayan salt, fresh garlic and ginger for a zingy, quick healthy meal. And now I have my online shop, you can order your superfoods/supplements to take you through these winter months and give you the energy you deserve this Christmas! I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all the most fantastic, happy and healthy Christmas, and thank you for all your wonderful support and love over the last year. I receive so many lovely emails from my regular readers, and it truly inspires me to give you the best information I can, knowing that I am helping to steer some of you in the right ‘health’ direction! Happy Christmas to you all.

Chichester still suffering with the away day blues CHICHESTER are still searching for an elusive away win in London One South after a disappointing 36-12 loss at Belsize Park. After a great win against promotion-chasing Camberley, Chi made the trip to one of the promoted sides full of optimism. But they found themselves outmuscled by a large and well-drilled pack as they game got away from them in the first half-hour as they fell 24-0 behind. Blues made seven changes to the side that beat Camberley. Debutant Alfie Montague and Ben Polhill came into the forwards, Josh Goodwin and Toby Golds returned in the backs while Kyle Armstrong and Tom Knight made the bench. Large, mobile and well drilled, Park were relentless for the first 18 minutes as Blues tried everything they could to stem the advance. Chichester found themselves 17-0 down having conceded three tries. From the restart, a Belsize Park clearance kick gave Chi rare possession and Chris Johnson, at his rampaging best, carried the ball forward. But a missed tackle provided Belsize Park with their bonus point with a fourth try. Blues rallied as Tyrese Makasi chased every loose ball, Gareth Davies felled props and Josh Goodwin delivered accurate, long flat passes. Davies chased a kick through and Belsize conceded a penalty. THe referee walked them back ten metres for back
chat and Chi kicked to the corner. THe ball was secured at the lineout by Nick Blount and Davies darted over from acting scrum half to dot down on the line. Davies converted to make it 24-7 at half-time. Belsize Park got an early fifth try (31-7) but as the opposition pack tired Chi moved the ball around with big carries from Ben Deavall, Martin O’Callaghan and Charlie Wallace. Using Chris Johnson at every opportunity, the No. 8 burst through the defence on the 22 metre line and off -loaded to Rhys THompson to score in the corner on 52 minutes. Belsize Park added one more try. Chichester end the first half of the season in seventh place. Supporters' men of the match were Davies and Makasi. Chi’s final match of the year is tomorrow when they entertain Havant at Oaklands Park in the A27 derby (2pm KO). Bognor stormed to a 30-7 win over Alton in Hampshire Premier thanks to tries from Freddie Burgess, Chris Webb, Ben Luxton, Tom James and George Castleton. Jeremy Newton kicked a penalty and conversion. Skipper Josh Burgess said: "Our defence was spot on for 80 minutes and we didn't let them have any time on the ball. "Our set-piece was brilliant, especially the scrummaging. "Sam Newcombe controlled the game really well from scrum half." Bognor are at Havant II tomorrow.

Chi on way to normality says manager Miles CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford believes the club is getting back to normality following the end of its FA Cup adventure. City drew 0-0 last weekend with Guernsey at Oaklands Park and head to BetVictor Isthmian South East high-flyers Whitehawk tomorrow (3pm). THeir previous outing before that had been a 5-1 drubbing at Hastings United when Rutherford had been absent. Chi were given a week off after that defeat and were due to train last night after Tuesday’s scheduled game against Ashford United was washed out. Rutherford was back in the
dugout for the Guernsey visit and can see signs his side are settling back into the bread and butter of league consolidation after experiencing the highs of their cup run which ended at Tranmere in the second round. And he was not too despondent about the defeat to Hastings as he knows there is now a process of readjustment for his players after the media spotlight has faded away. He said: “We were OK (against Guernsey). It was always going to be hard after the FA Cup, we knew that, and we are just trying to find our feet again and then we go again. “Hastings are most probably

going to be the best side in this league. “Most of them are full-time anyway and they are on a different wavelength to us. THey are a big club and we always expected that one to be a tough game but what made it worse is we went into it after a really tough

week. “I was told we looked tired, Hastings looked OK, and we need to all be up for it to compete with sides who are up the top of the league. “We go again now. We have to take the positives and negatives that we have had and build on that.” And that brings Chi on to the next challenge – a Whitehawk side bidding to get back to the next level after relegation last season. Rutherford said: “It’s a tough game and hopefully we shall do OK. “It’s at Whitehawk and we shall see what we are all about after the couple of weeks that we have had. We’re looking forward to it. “I think now we’re just starting to get back to normality. “It will be good we have had a couple of weeks away from the FA Cup and we shall see what we are like against Whitehawk. “It’s a good game for us in a way.” Striker Scott Jones is unavailable but Rutherford should be close to full strength.

Hardwell targets three points PAGHAM boss Kerry Hardwell was not too downhearted after he suffered his first defeat since taking charge as manager. THe Lions went down 1-0 to AFC Uckfield Town in a game which will not live long in the memory. Uckfield edged the win with a 31st-minute goal when Matt Barbosa found some room on the right-hand side of the penalty area and beat Lions keeper Jordan Matthews at the near-post. Matthews made an excellent save early in the second period to keep out Uckfield but there were few chances. Lions sub Jake Heryet had a late effort blocked. Hardwell said: “THe boys matched a team that can go third in the table if they win their game in hand and who have been together for a long time. “I felt the boys deserved to get something out of the game. “THis week, three points are a must. ” THe Lions host bottom side Loxwood tomorrow (3pm) in a crunch clash. Selsey returned to action with a 2-1 home win over Southwick in SCFL division one. Max Davies scored with a superb half-
volley from a Ryan Morey run and cross for the opener after 20 minutes. Scott Rafferty added the second six minutes later after curling home from 18 yards after being played in. THe Wickers replied and put Selsey under pressure in the second half but the hosts
dug in to claim the win. THe Blues’ Tuesday night game was postponed against Oakwood and they go to Arundel tomorrow. In division two, Bosham lost 3-0 at home St Francis Rangers. THey head to Rottingdean Village tomorrow (2pm KO).

Jack looks for fringe benefits in Trophy tie
f Goals galore last weekend
NEXT GAME
FRINGE players have a chance to stake a claim tomorrow when Bognor head to Folkestone Invicta in the Velocity Trophy. Nobody at the Rocks has made a secret of where the priority lies this term as the Nyewood Lane club plots a path back to the next level. But the Velocity Trophy, as the league cup is currently known, can serve a useful purpose for boss Jack Pearce and coach Robbie Blake. Pearce told THe Post: "It's a way of playing the squad players . "And it is a way of giving players the chance to impress me really when you look at the bigger picture. "THat is what I will use it for." THe Rocks will certainly have to be on their mettle as Folkestone are currently top of the BetVictor Isthmian Premier, nine points clear of their guests having played a game more. Tuesday night's league trip to Corinthian-Casuals was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Pearce fears tomorrow's game in Kent could also fall foul of the weather. He admitted: "I think, with this rain, it could be doubtful. "It's not the best out there so you have to be honest. "We shall have to wait and see
but it could be a wait until Boxing Day. "But if not, we shall go there and give it our best shot." Should the game be called off, Rocks' next outing will be at the Dripping Pan against Lewes on Boxing Day. Despite last Saturday's crushing of Cray Wanderers, Pearce says the hunt for more firepower will continue. However, he was hoping to know more about when he might see the likes of attacking threats Mason Walsh and Bradley Lethbridge back from injuries this week. He said: "We're still not there yet on anyone and we are just waiting to see how the injuries go. "I should get a better idea after we train (THursday). "We shall review it and see where we are." Pearce would dearly love to wrap up a couple of wins as the Christmas fixtures come into view. He added: "It's Christmas and we have two local derbies coming up. Let's hope we have a nice enjoyable Christmas with our families and our points tally!" Holders Bognor will meet either Brighton and Hove Albion or Burgess Hill in the Sussex Senior Cup quarter-finals. THe game is still to be completed.
Folkestone Invicta (A) Tomorrow (Saturday December 21), at 3pm
Party time as Rocks hit seven BOGNOR’S players got the party started early on Saturday when they bashed Cray Wanderers 7-2 at Nyewood Lane. Just hours before their Christmas do, they cut loose with doubles for Dan Smith and Doug Tuck, plus an own goal and efforts from Ashton Leigh and Tommy Leigh putting them in a festive spirit. THe win catapulted the Rocks up to seventh in BetVictor Isthmian Premier. Ashton Leigh opened the scoring after 23 minutes from a James Crane delivery. Jay Leader put through his own net six minutes later from a Tuck cross and Smith added the third on 32 minutes. Tuck slotted in the fourth five minutes after the restart but the visitors replied before Tommy Leigh hooked home on 74 minutes. Tuck produced a cool finish two minutes later but Cray replied again before Smith wrapped up the win after he had been played in by substitute Arron Hopkinson. Boss Jack Pearce insisted Bognor are still light up front despite the goal-fest as Brad Lethbridge and Mason Walsh are still out injured. Pearce also saw the funny side so soon after calling for more firepower but said: “I know we scored a lot but we only have one recognised striker in the squad, and that’s Dan Smith who was man of the match. He’s the only one, though. “Up until the game, they were one of the
three teams which had only lost on three occasions, so it was a very good win. “THey are a very good team and they have some very good players. “Once the third goal had gone in they had to then start committing players forward.
“Once that happens, if you play sensibly, then you will continue to create chances. We took our chances after that.” He added: “THe players had their Christmas party, so hopefully they enjoyed that."

NYECAMP NEWS by Liam Goodley
IT’S a real shame we couldn’t follow up our demolition of Cray Wanderers with another win on the road at Corinthian Casuals this past Tuesday. THe game was called off due to a soft pitch, after it hosted two games over the weekend. Kingstonian share the ground and both sides had to fulfil home fixtures and so it was always going to be a doubt our game would be on. On a cynical (and totally biased) view you could say maybe they saw our result on Saturday and didn’t want to face us? I was very impressed with how we tore Cray apart last Saturday. When we need to be, we were direct but still playing the passing football we are renowned for. Goals galore at Nyewood Lane in front of a larger 527 crowd. THis was against a team that were seemingly doing very well. Goal machine Dan Smith continues to find the net and I had Doug Tuck as my man of the match, not just for his goal contributions, but for all of his effort throughout the game. Tommy Leigh is improving game on game and brother Ashton Leigh is a real threat for us on the left with Mason Walsh still out injured. It was nice to see him get among the goals as well. Seven goals and only two conceded but from individual errors, otherwise Cray failed to break us down. Cray played a high line and at times caught us out on the counter but we punished them down the other end with some open play. I still think it's too early to say whether we will make the playoffs but if we continue to play in this way then I feel we have a great chance to get there. But we travel again to Folkestone Invicta tomorrow. We won there last time 2-1 with Dan Smith netting a late winner. THough tomorrow it’s Velocity Trophy (league cup)
action in a break from the league, and it might mean an opportunity to see how other players can step up. I do think this competition should be regionalised in the early rounds as it's a long way to travel for fans and players. THis is why I believe we are sharing the coach with the players tomorrow with A & A Travel. I remember a time when we used to do coach trips on special occasions only, when the club set up coach travel with the players. But now we have the amazing David Robinson and the supporters club committee putting on coaches to every game for fans, which I know for a fact is appreciated by supporters. I often read the Bognor ‘Unofficial’ message board to see what everyone is discussing and find it rather bizarre Worthing fans are on there a lot giving their views. It’s all banter, of course, and I take it as that but we could use this to fuel our team and create a buzz for the second instalment of the ‘El Classicoast’. Certain individuals from the Mackerels fan base like to stir up trouble online and for that reason, a win against Worthing on New Year’s Day at Nyewood Lane would be pure bliss. I am sure us beating them wouldn’t stop the banter online though! Spaces are still available on the coach for Lewes at the Dripping Pan on Boxing Day, so speak to David Robinson or Ian Guppy for details. We are playing some good football at present and whatever happens tomorrow against Invicta I believe we are building some momentum going into the new year. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone associated with the football club and readers who might be following us from afar. I hope to see many of you at a Bognor game soon. UP THE ROCKS
