ajalakshmi, a policewoman who lived in Saidabad, had never thought her husband, sub-inspector Shyam Kumar, 28, would con the law and marry for the second time on the sly. But it is what he did and now faces the law. SI Shyam is of 2009 batch. He belongs to Nalgonda. After the training, he was posted to Madannapet police station. During his posting, he came in touch with constable Rajalakshmi and the acquaintance turned to love, explained Saidabad inspector A Srinivasulu. Last year, they performed a marriage in a temple without much fanfare and followed it up with the registration of the same with Azampura register office. After the marriage, the two started living together at Injapur village of Vanasthalipuram. Recently however, Shyam began distancing himself from her and then stopped coming home. Worried, Rajalakshmi began enquiring about him but he evaded a direct reply. In the past few days he switched off his mobile phone too. Enquiries revealed that he had not disclosed the marriage to his family, which got him married to his cousin back home. Rajalakshmi, shocked to the core, approached the Saidabad police and lodged a formal complaint with them for cheating in matrimony against the SI. Police said that the subinspector had disappeared for the past few days and they were trying to trace him. A case of cheating has been registered against him.

‘Share City revenue’

Its Seemandhra leaders have realised that revoking decision on T is not plausible and therefore changed tack demanding a huge share from Hyderabad. Md INKESHAF AHMED

ahmed.m@postnoon.com

T

he TDP leaders in Seemandhra who have been agitating against the division of the State appear to have come to the conclusion that the UPA-2 government would not go back on its decision. After sweating it out for a month, they are now talking of the cash cow, Hyderabad city. The party leadership, unable to behave like YSRC which went back on its word on Telangana, argue that all regions had contributed to Hyderabad city and they have a stake in its fortune and future. They point out that a lot many industrialists and social leaders have sacrificed their time and money over the years to make Hyderabad what it is today. In fact, it was during Chandrababu Naidu’s government that Hyderabad earned a global status, the party leaders

point out. The leaders have come up with statistics to make their stance clearer. They want 58 per cent share in the income generated from Hyderabad. The TDP leaders say Seemandhra can’t give up Hyderabad without its share. As per the statistics available with the TDP leaders, Hyderabad city generates about 60 per cent of the total income of the State government. So it is reasonable to demand 58 percent of the total revenue from

Hyderabad. It would involve a huge amount, time and energy to build a capital for Seemandhra, it is argued. Seemandhra leaders are very vocal about it. “Hyderabad was not developed by Telangana people. It was Seemandhra industrialists and foreign investors who gave Hyderabad a world-class city status. The development of the City reached new levels during the TDP rule when Chandrababu Naidu was chief minister. People from walks of

life made the City as their permanent residence and strived for its development. The new state can’t be formed without giving the legitimate share of seemandhra people,” a TDP MP from Seemandhra region told Postnoon. According to the TDP, out of a total income of `1,58,575 crore of the State government during the fiscal 2013-14, the Seemandhra region requires `88,759 crore for the development of the new state. “Without this money, you can’t develop the new capital and the new state. This is the legitimate right of Seemandhra people,” another TDP leader points out. If the just share of the Seemandhra region is not given, the region would be left with only `64,000 crore, which come from the 13 districts of the State. The TDP is planning to pitch for securing for Seemandhra a lion's share from Hyderabad in coming days instead of wasting its time on Seemandhra agitation. The party strongly believes that this new strategy would win them goodwill of Seemandhra people.

T

he ongoing Seemandhra agitation cost `3.14 crore daily loss to the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). According to RTC officials, the corporation has been incurring losses due to agitation as 70,000 RTC employees joined the strike and 12,250 buses from 123 depots went off the roads in Seemandhra region. Even the buses to Tirupati were discontinued as part of the agitation. Even now, only a few schedules are operated to the holy city. Executive director (operational) GV Ramana Rao said that, “RTC employees are on strike since 20 days. Not a single bus was operated in this period due to which the transport corporation is facing financial crisis.” Employees faced a bleak month indeed. Ramana said, “The employees who took part in

agitation would be punished under ‘no work, no pay’ concept. Only 4,000 APSRTC employees from Seemandhra will get salaries and the proposition about the regularisation and salary hike of the workers could be affected.” The APSRTC employees’ unions, however, counter the ‘loss statement’. A union leader argued, “The corporation is of

ONLY 4,000 APSRTC EMPLOYEES FROM SEEMANDHRA WILL GET SALARIES AND THE PROPOSITION ABOUT THE SALARY HIKE OF THE WORKERS COULD BE AFFECTED. course not making profits, but it doesn’t mean loss. Due to the agitation, the expenditure on salaries, maintenance and diesel are all being saved while the income of the RTC throughout the State comes to `18 crore per day.” General secretary, APSRTC employees’ union from Seemandhra region, Padma Rao

said: “Transport corporation would be closed totally if the State was divided because the private transport network is very strong in that region. We are going to continue strike till September 2 and after the meeting with Andhra leaders, we will decide whether we should continue the strike or call it off.”

Blaming the private travel agencies, the Telangana RTC employees said that only APSRTC buses were halted in the region while the large number of private services had been making huge profits cashing in on the situation. RTC officials ruled out a fare hike now. Despite many upward

revisions of diesel prices, the RTC desisted from raising fares for the sake of common passengers. “There was no hike in the fares despite the diesel price hike many times during this period. As the corporation is facing a financial crunch, a decision on hikes will be taken in future,” he added.

earnasium Open Vocab Contest Monsoon Edition, 2013, a unique English Vocabulary Contest, was held in the City recently. The final was held between few government school students and private school students. Narasimha Marjodi, Class V student of Anjaiah Nagar Government Primary School, Gachibowli, won the competition and was declared the champion. Along with the title of Learnasium Open Vocab Champion, he won a cash prize of `50,000 along with a trophy. On his win, he said, “I am happy I won the title and more happy that I won some money which I will give to my parents.” Narsimha is from a poor background and his parents work several casual jobs. Narsimha joined the school in Class I and has been a bright

student. He was selected to participate in this competition by his school. “I was asked to participate in the quiz and one person from the foundation used to come and teach me every day for an hour, which helped me do well in the competition.” Like any other kid, Narsimha too has big dreams. “I want to be an engineer and make my family proud.” he says. In the finals, the best of the best from both the leagues were chosen and competed by playing three English Vocabulary games like Hangman, Anagram, Spelling Bee. Classwise competitions were held for all four grades in the three different popular game rounds. The schools that reached the finals included the private schools Glendale, Howard, Meridian, Sanskriti, CMR International, Goutham, DSE, Obul Reddy and Madeena, and government schools Anjaiah Nagar Primary School,

Gachibowli Primary School, Siddiq Nagar Primary School and CNN Tanda Primary School. The prize money was sponsored by Lanco Hills and Venue by Tech Mahindra. The other winners include Kaveri Priya P of Delhi Public School for Class VI; Mihir Odhrani of Howard

Public School for Class VII and Mahtab Makrani of CMR Inter national School for Class VIII. The contest was divided into ‘Private School League’ and ‘Government School League’. The same preliminary tests was held among the 1,000 underprivileged students adopted by the Atlanta Foundation’s

education programme as well as the private schools. “The whole idea of the contest is to showcase that with the right training and resources, students from government schools can also perform to high standards in English as any other student from the private schools,” informed Deenanath Harapanahalli, Founder of Atlanta Foundation. Organised by The Atlanta Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that supports the education of underprivileged students by organising Freedom, Republic and Peace Cycle Rides, the contest provides a platform to learn and improve English vocabulary with the finest learning resources, learn new English words in a fun way, and compete with the best talents in the City. S

ince the time a separate Telangana state has been declared, life in Seemandhra has come to a standstill. However, the most affected is the education sector. With government as well as private teachers participating in the protest, over 50 lakh students have been facing severe difficulties since no school has been functioning for a month now. Except for a few CBSE schools like DAV and Kendriya Vidyalaya functioning regularly, the rest of the schools have been virtually shut. Though there were disturbances during the Telangana agitations, academics was not affected to this extent, say educationalists. “Though there were frequent bandhs at that time, educational institutions never remained closed for weeks together. This is really severe and if it continues for a few more days, there are high possibilities of students losing out on one whole academic year,” says educationalist and RTE activist Satish Kumar Reddy. Political leaders initially tried to rope in Intermediate and school students to join their agitation, but through education department officials, the police made it clear to the manage-

CORPORATE

ADVANTAGE

Due to the ongoing agitation, reputed corporate institutions are shifting students from Seemandhra region to the City. During the Telangana agitation, when the City witnessed disruptive bandhs, these institutions shifted students from Hyderabad to Andhra region. “We do not want classes to be affected. Because of the agitations, students should not miss out on their academics and suffer a loss in their scores. It’s just the beginning of the academic year and a lot of syllabus has to be completed. This is the reason for shifting students. Moreover, since most of our institutions have residential facilities, parents too are relieved,” says a faculty member from Sri Chaitanya. Students from these institutions confirmed that the management is taking special classes for extra hours, especially for students who have shifted from Seemandhra. “We are done with more than half of the syllabus. The lecturers do not want to miss out on time and are rushing with the syllabus,” said Swarnalatha, a first-year Intermediate student who shifted from Vijaywada.

ENGINEERING COLLEGES MOST AFFECTED Though corporate colleges have

the facility of shifting students, students from professional colleges have no option but to miss out on classes. There are almost 500 engineering colleges in Seemandhra region, which means that over five lakh students are missing out on classes every day. Majority of the engineering colleges are not functioning as students from these colleges are actively taking part in the agitation. Students from universities like Nagarjuna University, Andhra University, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, who

are actively taking part in the agitation, have been calling for a bandh and boycotting classes. A few colleges, however are said to be taking classes for a couple of hours every day in the morning. “Students, especially the third- and fourth-year students will be the most affected because of this agitation. After paying lakhs of rupees obviously they cannot shift to other colleges now. Though some classes are being taken for some time during the mornings, this is not sufficient to complete the syllabus,”

Land Acquisition Bill helps neither farmer nor industry: JP In the guise of helping the farmer, the Bill creates all sorts of bureaucratic hurdles for clearing land acquisition.

L

ok Satta Party national president Dr Jayaprakash Narayan has said that the Land Acquisition Bill adopted by the Lok Sabha on August 30 fails on both counts of ensuring a

fair deal to the farmer who parts with precious land and promoting industrialisation and infrastructure development. In a statement, Dr JP said that in the guise of helping the farmer, the Bill creates all sorts of bureaucratic hurdles in the shape of committees at the district, state and central levels for clearing land acquisition. Stipulation of social impact assessments and rehabilitation and resettlement norms make acquisition of even a small piece of land next to impossible. As a result, the farmer does not benefit, economic activity gets stalled and the country slides back into

the licence-permit raj of 1970s. Dr JP pointed out that farmers have been short-changed for decades in land acquisition for public purposes. They have been paid a pittance compared to market price by way of compensation. Even the meagre compensation is often delayed. The land acquisition policy has seen land buyers becoming prosperous and land losers ending up in penury. He said that the children of farmers who part with land should be equipped with skills and provided jobs in activities that follow land acquisition. He recalled that he had the privilege of training 8,000 children of

farmers who parted with their land for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and providing permanent jobs to all of them. The present Land Acquisition Bill is silent on this aspect. Once land is acquired, say for a project, its value shoots up dramatically, up to 100 fold in some cases. Considering that, the land acquired for any project should be double that needed by the project. Half the land thus acquired should be given back to farmers after development. Under such a policy, the farmer gets not only compensation but also developed land whose value NSS will have appreciated.

says chairman, Consortium of Engineering Professional College Management, Rev KVK Rao. With the campus not functioning, hostel facilities on these campus too remained closed, forcing majority of students to return to their homes. Yogi Vemana University in Kadapa and its affiliated hostels have been closed since the time of the protests. Students have not been staying on the Rayalaseema University campus in Kurnool due to various problems, including severe water problems.

Asaram has denied the charge, with his son saying that the girl was “mentally unstable". A police officer told IANS that before his questioning, Asaram will be produced in a court after being brought to Jodhpur. He will be brought in a flight from Indore to Delhi and from Delhi to Jodhpur. Security has been stepped up in

Jodhpur ahead of Asaram’s arrival, he said. Police Saturday arrested 13 followers of Asaram in Jodhpur for assaulting media persons covering developments in the sexual assault case. Police sealed the ashram’s main gate and dispersed the supporters who started gathering since Saturday morning following reports of Asaram’s impending arrest. The police complaint filed by the girl in Delhi was transferred Aug 21 to police in Jodhpur where the alleged sexual assault took place. Asaram was served notice Aug 27 at his ashram in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, asking him to appear before police in Jodhpur for questioning before or on Aug 30. Asaram has been booked under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Indian Penal Code. A look-out circular has also been issued against the spiritual guru to prevent any attempt by him to leave the country. “However, he failed to turn up on Friday. We arrested him almost within 24 hours after the deadline for his voluntarily appearing before the police ended," the police official said. As per the allegations of the girl who studied at Asaram’s ashram in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara and stayed in a girls’ hostel there, the guru sexually assaulted her on the pretext of exorcism. Police also summoned hostel warden Shilpi, hostel attendant Keshav and Asaram Bapu’s caretaker Shiva for IANS questioning Thursday.

Obama blinks first, as Syria strikes put on hold...for now STEPHEN COLLINSON & TANGI QUEMENER

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama postponed threatened missile strikes against Syria on Saturday in a risky gamble that he can win more support for his plan to punish Bashar alAssad’s regime. To general surprise, the US leader broke with decades of precedent to announce that he would seek approval from Congress for action against Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons. This effectively pushed military action back until at least September 9, when US lawmakers return from their summer recess. Obama insisted that he reserves the right to strike regardless of Congress’ decision, and a White House official said the pause would also allow him time to build international support. The Arab League meets in Cairo on Sunday and is expected to condemn Assad, and Obama travels to Russia next week for a G20 Summit that will now be overshadowed by the crisis. But the toughest battle, and perhaps the most dangerous for Obama’s credibility, may yet be with his own former colleagues in Congress, where support for strikes is far from assured. Indeed, observers warned that he faces the same fate as Prime Minister David Cameron, who on Friday lost his own vote on authorizing military action in the British parliament.

To general surprise, the US leader broke with decades of precedent to announce that he would seek approval from Congress for action against Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons. “The chairman of the joint chiefs has informed me that we are prepared to strike whenever we choose,” Obama warned, in an address given in the White House Rose Garden. “Moreover, the chairman has indicated to me that our capacity to execute this mission is not time sensitive. It will be effective tomorrow or next week or one month from now.”

At least five US warships armed with scores of Tomahawk cruise missiles have converged on the eastern Mediterranean ready to launch precision strikes on Syrian regime targets. And France says it is ready to deploy its own forces in the operation. Obama and his French counterpart Francois Hollande spoke before his announcement and renewed their “determina-

tion.” Syria, meanwhile, said it has its “finger on the trigger” as it braces for what it had formerly feared was an imminent Western strike. “The Syrian army is fully ready, its finger on the trigger to face any challenge or scenario that they want to carry out,” Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi said.

And the head of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards warned that Western action would trigger reactions beyond the borders of Tehran’s key regional ally. “The fact that the Americans believe that military intervention will be limited to within Syrian borders is an illusion,” said commander Mohammad Ali Jafari. Shortly before Obama’s remarks, a team of UN inspectors left Syria after spending four days investigating last week’s alleged chemical attacks on suburbs of Damascus. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said that analysis of samples taken at the site would take up to three weeks. A UN spokesman promised they would give a fair report after conducting these lab tests, but Washington and its allies insist they already know all they need to know. Obama’s administration says it already has reliable intelligence that the regime launched a chemical onslaught that killed 1,429 people, including at least 426 children. That brought a contemptuous response from President Vladimir Putin of Russia, a close ally of Syria, who branded the claims “utter nonsense” and demanded proof. Syria has denied responsibility for the alleged incident and has pointed the finger of blame at “terrorists” — its term for the rebels ranged against Assad’s forces. AFP

SAN FRANCISCO: Smoke from the huge wildfire in Yosemite National Park reached the heavily-touristed heart of the park Saturday, officials said, warning visitors against strenuous activity. Webcams showed smoke apparently clouding the world-famous Yosemite Valley, the spectacular area in the middle of the California park visited by millions every year. More than usual visitors were expected in the park for the Labor Day weekend, although officials had said the increase could be smaller than usual due to the so-called Rim Fire, which started two weeks ago outside the park. “Heavy smoke is now visible south of the Tioga Road, including in Yosemite Valley,” said the park website’s latest update after a change in wind direction from the blaze.

TOKYO: The operator of Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant said Saturday it had found new radiation hotspots near tanks storing toxic water, with one reading peaking at 1,800 millisieverts per hour -- a potentially lethal dose. Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) detected high radiation readings at four sites around the tanks although none of the containers showed any visible fall in their water levels, according to a statement reported by two Japanese news agencies. Last week the plant operator admitted 300 tonnes of toxic water had seeped out of one of the vast containers -- one of around 1,000 on the site -- before anyone had noticed.

target of a failed “terrorist” attack on Saturday aimed at disrupting traffic through the key waterway, the head of the Suez Canal Authority said. Admiral Mohab Mamish confirmed that “a terrorist” had launched the attack against a Panamanianflagged ship, adding in a statement that “the attempt failed completely and there was no damage to the ship or the containers it carried”. The statement gave no details of the nature of the attempt at 1230 GMT Saturday, but sources said they heard loud explosions from the container ship which had been passing through the canal. The Egyptian army gave the order for heightened security measures at the sea route.

EDITORIALS THREE YEARS AND a life lost How long is three years? That’s 1,095 days to us, but for the juvenile convicted in the Delhi gang-rape case, it could prove to be a lifetime. At least that’s what many Indians hope. The nation, as a clamouring whole, was outraged at the sentence passed down by the Delhi juvenile court. Some wanted him to hang from the highest rafter, others wanted him to breath his last aged breath within the confines of a moss-soaked, damp cell, riddled with disease, wondering how he managed to rape his youth with one stroke of ill-conceived evil. All wanted him off the streets. And they will have their wish... for 1,095 days (minus time already spent incarcerated of course). So what is to become of this young man when he finally emerges from his concrete bunker that will have kept him alive far longer than he could have hoped had he been let off scot-free. Will he be accepted back into society as one who committed a grievous wrong, but has spent time rehabilitating himself? Or will he feel our self-righteous wrath the moment he sets foot on the soil of the free? One would suggest the latter, but seeing as we have the attention span of goldfish with ADHD, it’s more likely that he will be forgotten, another youth lost... slipping into a life of violent crime that will obscure hope completely. This criminal must be punished, and yes we do agree that three years is a ridiculously short time, but it is not a death sentence. At some point, someone, somewhere, will have to deal with his life. Will we recognise him if we saw him on the streets? Would we inadvertently share a table with him at a jampacked fast-food stall? Would we look into his eyes and see a vicious killer? Or will we just see a face, once young, now creased with the strain of prison, and maybe even, one hopes, eternal remorse? For the victim’s family there is no relief, no succour, only an unsatisfying sense of closure. Their sentence is life, but for our ‘juvenile’ maybe he’ll realise that the most merciful sentence he could have received, was death.

It takes more than a gavel to deter rape From the hip SYED SHOAIB

W

henever wherever a rape happens, it triggers a gender slugfest. It is perceived that women are more sensitive to the happening, and hence take it upon themselves to voice their opinion. Their opinion is supposed to be correct because they feel better for the victim, more often than not, a female. This narrowed outlook not only results in an unnecessary squeamish atmosphere, it draws the focus away from the main issue. It sometimes makes the male species look like a pack of demons, which while not participating in the act per se is justifying it. The divide here is not gender, it is broader — that of humanity and equality. There is not a human being who does not feel outraged on learning of this dastardly act. To accuse Justice N Kirubakaran of justifying rapes when he is alleged to have remarked that the Delhi college girl, who was gang raped on a moving bus around midnight last year, had chosen the wrong time to travel, is to bark up the wrong tree. Gender sensitivity must be exercised here. The fact of the matter is that had it been two boys on that Delhi bus or in the isolated stretch of Mahalaxmi railway station, the nation would not have been spending its emotions in the aftermath of what eventually happened after the girls were caught in a vulnerable situation. Prevention is better than cure, goes an often-used idiom. Desiderius Erasmus, a humanist and teacher, made this observation in the fifteenth century. Morality, if any, has only gone down since then. To think otherwise, is to live in a fool’s paradise. That brings into focus the associates of the two unfortunate girls. With diminished survival instinct that came with a sense of safety at having male escorts, the girls would have ventured into the unknown and their safety was compromised. But something has to be done to ensure that such incidents do not repeat. Wishful thinking is not going to guarantee that. And how long is one going to be always cautious and keep looking over the shoulder to see if a pack of beasts is on the prowl, whatever time of the

day or night. If midnight was not the right time to travel then are early mornings safe? If we continue this line of thinking, women cannot travel any time, day or night, with or without an escort. So should women be confined to their homes for safety? For that matter, are homes safe? Women have a right to the country’s spaces lonely or otherwise by virtue of being citizens of this nation. So we need to come out with measures and real quick on how to do this. While stringent and quick justice will go a long way to instil fear, it is the upbringing and socialisation of children that will bring a permanent solution to this problem.

The occasions where women are safe even when perfectly alone with total strangers in workplaces or public spaces are not something unheard of. How is it that happens? There are men by the millions who consider even touching a woman anathema unless it is consensual. They are not from a different planet. It is just that they were trained in their childhood to respect women and these values are so internalised that nothing would break it; nay it would not even occur to them as a remotest possibility. This kind of value inculcation has to begin in homes and schools. Also, awareness campaigns in media should be able to instil ideas of acceptable behaviour

and the advantage that accrues from it. This kind of social education should be done on a mega scale. Once upon a time the small-family system was looking to be as insurmountable as the K2 but today it is an accepted norm. It has taken half a century to achieve this, and even on this we may have to put in intense efforts but maybe half a century later our daughters will be laughing and running in vast open spaces with the wind in their faces and stars in their eyes. For a start, the law has to be strict on this: and that is not happening if a person guilty of rape and murder is handed out a lenient sentence because he is a few days shy of 18 years.

on solid exports doubled in August from the previous month as a result of strong export growth, a government report said today (Sunday). Trade surplus increased to $4.92 billion in August from $2.54 billion in July, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, reports Xinhua.

Femsa, the largest Coke bottler in the world, announced Saturday it has acquired Spaipa of Brazil in a $1.855 billion deal. The all-cash transaction will increase Coca-Cola Femsa’s volume by 40 per cent in Brazil. Approved by Coca-Cola FEMSA’s board of directors, the deal is still subject to the approval of Brazil’s antitrust authority.

France signals tax cuts PARIS: France’s Socialist government is hinting it may appease discontent at tax rises by putting more stress on spending cuts in its fight to control the budget and boost growth. The latest signs came with a new reform of the pension system, which was headed for a huge deficit by 2020, that raises charges for business and workers but has been widely criticised.

Star economist takes over Central Bank amid crisis Penelope Macrae feedback@postnoon.com

NEW DELHI: Central Bank chief Raghuram Rajan takes over the helm this week as the nation grapples with its worst financial crisis in decades, sparked by a plunging rupee, a record trade gap and a sharp economic slowdown. Rajan, a high-profile former IMF chief economist renowned for predicting the 2008 global financial collapse, moves into the Reserve Bank of India’s office on Thursday, replacing his retiring predecessor Duvvuri Subbarao. The appointment of the informal, outspoken diplomat’s son comes as some analysts fear the once-booming economy could be heading for a meltdown. India’s economy has gone dramatically downhill since the so-called ‘Indian Summer’ — the heady nineties when growth regularly exceeded eight per cent and the country was a global investor favourite. Rajan, who qualified as an engineer at the Indian Institute of Technology and later did a management doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, faces a virtually impossible “trilemma” in his new job, analysts say. He inherits an economy with a record current account deficit — the broadest measure of trade, a currency which has lost 16 per cent against the dollar this year and annual growth at its weakest in a decade at five per cent. He’s “in an unenviable situation,” DK Joshi, chief economist of leading credit rating agency Crisil, told AFP. The 50-year-old Rajan cautioned against expecting too much from his appointment — saying there are no “quick fixes”. “No one can doubt the country’s promise,” the economist said after being named in early August to the post, but added, “There is no magic wand to make the problems disappear

instantaneously”. Analysts have raised fears India could face a crunch of the sort it suffered in 1991 when a foreign exchange-strapped government had to pawn its gold for an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout. Friday’s first-quarter figures showing the economy posting an unexpectedly low growth of 4.4 per cent offered no cheer. “Given the ongoing turmoil, economic conditions look likely to get worse before they get any better,” said Capital Economics economist Daniel Martin. For the time being, Rajan, a staunch economic reformer and withering critic of “rampant” Indian corruption and suffocating bureaucracy, will have his hands tied, analysts say. He will be forced to focus on

THERE ARE OBSERVERS WHO SUGGEST THAT SHOULD INDIA’S SITUATION UNRAVEL FURTHER AND IT HAS TO GO TO THE IMF FOR HELP, RAJAN’S CONNECTIONS WITH THE WORLD BODY COULD COME IN HANDY. stabilising the currency by keeping interest rates high at the expense of spurring expansion of Asia’s third-largest economy, analysts say. Meanwhile, the government will have to concentrate on reining in the current account gap which has prompted foreign

investors to race for the exits and put pressure on the rupee. Rajan is known as a “creative, out-of-the-box thinker” which should stand him in good stead, said Deepak Lalwani, head of India-focused financial consultancy Lalcap. But there is scepticism whether Rajan, even with his strong credentials, can do much to boost the economy. As veteran Indian financial commentator Swaminathan Aiyar remarked: “Great jockey. Pity he doesn’t have a better horse.” Rajan won fame as one of the few economists who warned of the global financial crisis before it hit in 2008 when he said sub-prime lending could lead to calamity. Rajan’s dire words earned the scorn of then US treasury

secretary Larry Summers who dismissed him as “misguided” and “a Luddite”. The two men now, ironically, may be together soon in the close-working club of global central bank leaders as Summers is frontrunner to be the next US Federal Reserve chief. Rajan, author of the acclaimed 2011 book Fault Lines on how hidden financial fractures threaten the world economy, left his post as professor at the prestigious University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and returned to India last year. Rajan, who hails from Tamil Nadu, came at the behest of the PM Manmohan Singh to serve as financial advisor. Many analysts at the time of Rajan’s return speculated his next stop would be the Central Bank. AFP

TUK-TUKS OFFER NEW TAKE ON PARIS

While tuk-tuks may be a cheap alternative to taxis in Asia, in central Paris, tourists are happy to pay an average of 20 euros per ride, easily more than regular cabs can charge. Nathalie Alonso Agence France-Presse

PARIS: The humble tuk-tuk, a fixture in Asian cities from Bangkok to Bangalore, is rapidly becoming a common sight in the touristy parts of Paris —and the bane of traffic police. The three-wheeled auto rickshaws, as well as human-powered pedicabs, first appeared in the French capital in 2011, and their numbers have since risen to around 50, lining up at landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, or the Place de la Concorde. Like their Asian cousins, many are brightly painted, while others sport the iconic yellow with black-and-white trim of the New York cab. The growth in numbers has been fuelled in part by the recent downturn in the French economy and the need to find work. The price for a tuk-tuk — imported from Thailand — can be as much as 9,000 euros ($12,000), but buyers hope to make good their investment. While tuk-tuks may be a cheap alternative to taxis in

Asia, in central Paris, tourists are happy to pay an average of 20 euros per ride, easily more than regular cabs can charge. “Unemployment is everywhere,” one driver says. “We have found something that the tourists like.” The downside, he said, is that “the police hassle you” — checking a laundry list of items including registration, medical clearance, insurance, brake

lights and turn signals, as well as maintenance. Sofiene, who says he always dreamed of being his own boss, earns between 90 and 110 euros a day — from which he might have to subtract between 35 and 135 euros if he is unlucky

enough to be fined. “Why shouldn’t I take advantage of the Golden Triangle like others do?” asked the former hotel maitre d’, referring to an upscale section of the Champs Elysees. Benjamin Maarek, manager of the company Allo Tuk Tuk, said: “We want to be put on the same footing as the double-decker tourist buses that blight the landscape, the river boats, the

little trains.” Maarek, whose outfit offers commented tours, added: “The right to the location is the right to work.” For the police, the latest addition to the city’s already congested traffic is just another headache. “These tuk-tuks are breaking the law because they haven’t been booked” by telephone or online, one policeman tells AFP. Under French law, only registered taxis are allowed to pick up passengers on the street. But the head of Paris’s traffic police, Major Bernard Baulard, admits the law is “not easy to enforce” because two and three-wheelers are not specifically covered. Anyone with a regular driver’s licence can buy and drive a tuk-tuk, he notes. Pedicabs have also flourished, numbering up to 200. They charge between five and 15 euros a ride. “The monuments go by nice and slowly,” says Ibrahim, from India. “It’s great to visit Paris without getting tired,” his girlfriend Nazneen chimes in before the pair get off at the Louvre.

Acting is in her genes Years ago, when Ira Dubey’s mother, actress Lillete Dubey, would put up plays, she would be in attendance, at rehearsals, backstage, giving out brochures. She describes herself her mother’s poonch, tail, when she was a child. ‘I think my genes have helped me to be part of theatre,’ Ira says.

t would be an understatement to say Ira Dubey’s childhood years revolved around theatre. When her mother, actress Lillete Dubey, would put up plays, she would be there in attendance, at rehearsals, backstage, giving out brochures. She describes herself her mother’s poonch, tail. “I think that’s how I got into theatre, I think my genes have helped me to be part of the theatre,” she says. “Acting for me was very natural.” When Ira started working with her mother, it was not such of a smooth ride at first. “Of course, she is a director, so she was very complicated,” Ira recalls. “She used to pick on me and my sister (Neha) all the time. We would get very irritated, but my mum kept telling us, ‘It’s just because I know how much your potential is and I know how much to push you and I know how good you are.’ She used to do it for our good.” “So while we were rehearsing she was a director and in the car, she was our mom.” It is this very “sunny” nurturing that has helped her bloom into the fine

Whether on the stage or before the camera, Ira looks comfortable and churns out credible performances. Ira was in Hyderabad to perform alongside Joy Sengupta, Kumud Mishra in ‘Love on the Brink’, directed by her mother. An English comic play being staged as part of the Hydourite

festival, it is based on the Tony Award Winning smash Broadway hit ‘Luv’ by Murray Schisgal. Sandhya Divecha adapted ‘Luv’ to its present form. Talking about the play, she says, “Usually, my mum’s stories are quite intense and we are quite happy to get this comedy here, which is different and nice.” Luv concerns two college

friends — misfit Harry and materialistic Milt. When they meet after a very long time, they do so in very strange circumstances: Milt stops Harry from jumping off a bridge. They share their troubles and find both are equally miserable as they share hard-luck stories. Milt sees in Harry an answer to his primary problem — his wife Ellen, who he tries to

Ira is so charmed by the Hyderabadi theatre lovers that she wishes to bring another play directed by her mother called the “Nine paths of desire” here. “It’s just me playing the nine characters. I am dying to bring that to Hyderabad. It’s a very intense play set in Iraq. I am very excited

Ira says apart from acting she may want to sing. “I always wanted to be an actor, but I think I would want to get back to my singing, I trained in Hindustani classical when I was a kid, I like to sing and I like to write.” Ira, however, rules out a corporate life. “I can never be in a corporate job. I tried it. I was working in a marketing and PR firm when I got my first film. I remember walking into my MD’s cabin and wanted leave. He said no, and I chose to leave my work and act.” Ira has studied theatre at the Yale University and also trained in various schools of acting in America. “Later, I came here and joined joined my mum’s theatre production.” Ira says films happened accidentally to her. “It’s a great learning. Theatre is my first priority. But I will still do films.” Ira has two film projects coming up —an English film and a Hindi film called Zaalim Dilli.

hoosing to portray Ganesha in various forms or poses, the works offer religious respite. Telling us more about the art show, Vijay says, “It’s a great privilege for me and also a great exposure, the art being displayed in Hyderabad is great, but when it’s going to Mumbai it’s a privilege. Most important part is that the Bajaj people called and they will be completely organising the show, which itself is a amazing. I am looking forward to the show. I am going to display more than 100 paintings of Ganesha. I have gone through Ganesha

Puranam, Yoga Mudra and Kriya Yoga to come out with these paintings.” Vijay also shares how in the last 10 years he focused more on Ganesha and wanted to bring out and talk about Ganesha through his paintings. Vijay is from Pragnapur, near Medak. He says that having been born and brought up in a traditional way, his works often reflect mythology. He has worked on folk, traditional, Telangana and contemporary styles as well. He has been painting for over 18 years and he is greatly influenced by Raja Ravi Varma and Jamini Roy and paints in the spirit of Thota Vaikuntham and Laxma Goud.

The exhibition is being held at the Kamalnayan Bajaj art Gallery, Mumbai September 2- 7, 11am-7pm.

Ice canyon found in Greenland

Women foresters in Gujarat are scripting a unique chapter in conservation, keeping poachers and encroachers at bay with their soft skills and emotional bond with villagers. Deployed in the Gir Forest, the only abode of the Asiatic Lion, these dedicated women keep a hawk’s eye on every acre of the sanctuary, parcelled into beats for administrative convenience.

Using ice-penetrating radar, scientists have discovered a long, deep canyon that exists a mile beneath the Greenland ice sheet, data from a Nasa airborne science mission. The scientific team identified a continuous bedrock canyon that extends from almost the center of the island and ends at its northern extremity in a deep fjord connecting to the Arctic ocean.

Pacific sounds warning on climate change The Marshall Islands has warned that the clock is ticking on climate change and the world needs to act urgently to stop low-lying Pacific nations disappearing beneath the waves.

M

arshalls Foreign Minister Phillip H Muller issued a plea for action as he prepares for next week’s Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), which includes some of the countries most affected by the rising seas blamed on global warming. “We want to work as hard as we can to see if there is a possibility of having our islands continue to exist,” Muller told AFP in a telephone interview from the capital Majuro. “That’s why we’re calling for urgent action from our

friends around the world. The longer we wait, I’m afraid we may reach the point of no return.” The centrepiece of next week’s summit in the Marshall Islands will be the signing of the Majuro Declaration, which Muller said was an attempt to reinvigorate the international community’s stalled efforts to address climate change. He said the declaration would set concrete, achievable goals on emissions reductions and climate change mitigation measures for the 15 member states of the PIF, which is mostly made up of developing

nations. Muller said the PIF wanted to set an example to the rest of the world and it would take the declaration to the United Nations in late September and urge other countries to adopt it. “This is a real issue for us. We’re already experiencing some of the impacts of climate change,” he said. “So I think morally and practically we are the ones that need to rise up and say ‘something’s got to be done’, not just in rhetoric and in meetings, but in real terms.” He said the Marshalls, a nation of 55,000 people made up of 29 atolls standing an

Areas of the country have been suffering from drought for most of the year, record king tides inun-

dated Majuro in June and rising seas have eroded seawalls and causeways, as well as turning drinking water brackish and causing crops to fail. Asked when the world needed to act, Muller replied: “It should have been yesterday.” He was optimistic climate change could be contained, but “waiting for another few days, or a year or two, isn’t good enough”. “We need to re-energise the international community and make them aware that there are countries that may not be in existence much longer.” He said the peoples of the Pacific did not want to become climate change refugees, forced from their homes by the encroaching sea. Kiribati, a PIF member, has already announced plans to purchase 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of land in Fiji to provide food for the tiny nation and possibly act as a new island home. Muller said the Marshall Islanders feared they too might have to make plans to flee if nothing is done to halt climate change. “We love our country, our culture and our islands,” he said. “We’re hoping that we won’t have to relocate, that’s a choice that we don’t want to AFP make.”

Beering Up Ministry of Beer, India’s first exclusive Belgium Beer House, has opened in Jubilee Hills. But before you fall over yourself trying to grab a mug, here’s a little information on the drink, and it makes a great ingredient too.

Almost all beers are either ales or lagers

Ales

Lagers

Fermented warm and made with a yeast that rises to the top. Generally stronger and more forceful in taste than lagers because of their relatively fast and warm fermentation.Often described as robust, hearty or fruity.

Made with a bottom or coldfermenting yeast. Traditionally need to age longer than ales at a colder temperature. This process inhibits the production of esters. Generally described as mellow, crisp and clean.

SUNNY LEONE TO SPEAK IN HINDI, PATHSHALA IN PROGRESS

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2013

T

he firangi divas never had it so good in Bollywood. In Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Cafe Nargis Fakhri, whose Hindi is still shaky (read: non-existent), conveniently plays a half-British journalist. Every single spoken line of hers is in English with Hindi subtitles for those who don’t follow her global twang. Now in Jackpot The Full Jhol, Sunny goes a step further. She will speak her own Hindi lines. A full-fledged Hindi-Urdu tutor has been deployed for the purpose. Director Kaizad Gustad smiles at memories of another firangi actress in his debut film Boom. Kaizad had introduced Katrina Kaif in the film. Her Hindi then was non-existent. And her dialogues had to be dubbed. Now Kaizad gets Sunny to be one-up on Katrina in Jackpot. “Sunny is the only female character in Jackpot. And I hope to display her acting chops. We’re reading the script every day. She will do her own Hindi dialogues. We’re working on it every day. “She is really one of the hardest-working actresses I’ve worked with. Just like Katrina. When Katrina came to Mumbai she didn’t know a word of Hindi,” Gustad said. Sunny, who made her Bollywood debut with the 2012 film Jism 2, seems mighty charged with the challenge of mastering the ‘rashtra-bhasha’. She will also be seen in Ragini MMS sequel. “I have learned all my Hindi lines for all my movies here. Even though Jism 2 was dubbed I still had to learn every single word. And in Ragini MMS too I will be dubbing my own voice. “It’s very important to me to learn and work hard to get it right. I am extremely competitive so when someone tells me I can’t do something like act, dance, express emotions on screen, or speak Hindi, all it makes me do is work harder to prove all those negative people wrong,” she said. Jackpot also stars Makarand Despande, who plays a funny twisted Konkani cop and Tamil star Bharath. “It’s basically a jhol (conflict) between Sachiin Joshi and Bharath with Sunny Leone pulling a fast one on them, and Naseer pulling a faster one. I am raring to finish. I’ve a lot of films to make. I am making three uninterrupted backto-back films in the next one year,” Gustad said. IANS

England level T20 series

Julian Guyer

CHESTER-LE-STREET: Alex Hales’s 94 provided the platform for England’s 27-run win against Australia in the second Twenty20 international on Saturday as the two-match series ended all square at 1-1. Australia, set 196 for victory, finished on 168 for nine at Chester-le-Street with opener Aaron Finch — who made a Twenty20 international record 156 in the tourists’ 39-run win at Southampton on Thursday — out for just five. David Warner top-scored for Australia with 53 but they were rarely up with the rate as seamer Jade Dernbach took three wickets for 23 runs in his maximum permitted four overs. Earlier, opening batsman Hales just failed again to become the first England batsman to score a Twenty20 international hundred as he took the hosts to 195 for five. Pakistan-born leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed, wicketless on debut at Southampton, took his first international wickets to finish with three for 25. Man-of-the-match Hales, who made 99 in a Twenty20 international against the West Indies last year, shared an opening stand of 111 with Michael Lumb (43). That partnership equalled England’s best for any wicket against Australia in a T20 international, with Craig Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen having put on 111 for the second wicket in England’s 2010 World Twenty20

Tseng seizes LPGA Portland lead

KPORTLAND: Former world number one Tseng Yani, trying to end a 17-month victory drought, fired a nineunder par 63 Saturday to take a three-stroke lead at the LPGA Safeway Classic. The 24-year-old from Taiwan owns 15 LPGA titles and spent 109 weeks at number one — a run that ended in March — but she hasn’t

made it to the winner’s circle in 36 events, since a triumph in the Kia Classic in March 2012. Now out of the world top 10 at 15th in the rankings, she missed the cut in four of her last five tournaments. However, she looked like her old, dominant self on Saturday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club with a round that included 11 birdies and two bogeys. Her 54-hole total of 198 broke the tournament record of 199 set by Swedish great Annika Sorenstam in 2002, when the event was played over three rounds. “It was awesome,” Tseng beamed after coming from five adrift to take the lead. “It’s great to be back in this position. I haven’t been here for a long time.” Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum, who led after each of the first two rounds, carded a 71 and shared second on 201 with Norwegian Suzann Pettersen, who posted a 70.

England Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad said consistency of selection would be vital if his side were to regain the Wold Twenty20 title in Bangladesh next year. Broad was a member of the England side that beat Australia by seven wickets in the 2010 World T20 final in Bridgetown in Barbados.

final win over their arch-rivals in Barbados. “I was disappointed not to get a hundred after getting close, Lumby helped me out at the start -- he gets going quicker than me,” said Hales at the presentation ceremony. England Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad added: “After losing the toss, the guys adapted to the conditions really well. It was great to keep wickets in hand as we can set a good platform. “Jade has been fantastic in the last few games, we know in Twenty20 that it’s taking wickets that slows the run-rate.” Australia captain George Bailey said his side hadn’t been at their best. “It was tough with the wind and we probably didn’t nail our skills as well as we would have liked,” he said. “We’ll take some good things out of this. Finch’s innings the other night was fantastic, James Faulkner will continue to improve and to have a leg-spinner (Ahmed) is great in Twenty20.” England ended the initial six-over powerplay on 61 without loss off after a blizzard of boundaries. Hales drove a straight six off Faulkner and left-hander Lumb struck all-rounder Shane Watson high over the long-on rope. However, the first-wicket stand was broken when Lumb top-edged a sweep off Ahmed and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

Garcia on a roll NORTON: Sergio Garcia swooped for an eagle at the final hole on Saturday to seize the second-round lead at the US PGA Tour’s $8 million Deutsche Bank Championship. The Spaniard rolled in an 18footer for eagle at the 18th to cap a seven-under 64 and erase the taste of his only mis-step of the day, a double-bogey on the parfour 14th. Prior to that he carded seven birdies and was in the clubhouse with a one-stroke lead on 13under 129. He was one stroke in front of Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who matched the low round of the tournament with an eight-under 63 that featured eight birdies, and American Robert Castro, who notched his second straight 65 for 130. Garcia said he considered skipping the tournament, the second of four events in the US tour’s season-ending playoffs, but wanted to solidify his place in the playoff points standings, especially after some disappointing showings in August. Garcia came into the week at 59th in the playoff standings,

Garcia said. “The summer has been tough,” added Garcia, who has endured a dip in form since the off-course controversy that engulfed him in May over a racially tinged remark involving Tiger Woods. “It’s been a little bit difficult for me. Nadal, Federer advance

NEW YORK: Rafael Nadal and

Roger Federer cruised into the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday, taking a crucial step toward a possible first-ever Grand Slam matchup on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts. And the last-16 roadblocks to their potential quarter-final showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium are a combined 1-19 in their respective personal matchups against the superstar duo. Spanish second seed Nadal, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, stretched his career-best hardcourt win streak to 18 matches by beating 38th-ranked Croatian Ivan Dodig, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. “I started the match with the right intensity,” Nadal said. “I think I played my best match of the week so far.” Federer, seeking his 18th Grand Slam title and sixth US Open crown, fired eight aces and 34 winners in defeating 63rd-ranked French left-hander Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-0, 6-2. “I was able to play a great match. I was very pleased about the outcome,” Federer said. “I was able to really use my serve well, because it was breezy. I had a bit more variation than him, which helped increase the margin.” On the women’s side, Victoria Azarenka advanced in three sets and Daniela Hantuchova saved four match points to reach the last 16, but Grand Slam winners Petra Kvitova and Svetlana Kuznetsova and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki were beaten. Next up for Federer, in his lowest Grand Slam seeding since 2002 at seventh, will be Spanish 19th seed Tommy

We both have a onehanded backhand,” Federer said. “He is mentally tough, physically tough. I’m prepared for a tough match as usual.” Nadal, who completed a career Grand Slam with his 2010 US Open crown but missed last year’s Open with knee injuries, has won nine titles

Tiny blonde bombshell Giorgi goes wild NEW YORK: Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi played the match of her life on the stage of her dreams Saturday to reach the fourth round of the US Open by stunning Caroline Wozniacki. The 21-year-old qualifier matched her best Grand Slam result, a run to the final 16 last year at Wimbledon, by rallying past Wozniacki 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 as the crowd roared in support at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I wanted that. It was my goal to be there,” Giorgi said of the largest Grand Slam venue. “It was amazing to play there. For me, it was so nice. I had never been there, so was really good. I loved to play in this court.” Giorgi, ranked 136th in the

since returning in February from a seven-month layoff. Nadal, who is 56-3 this year and has held serve 37 times without fail over three matches, took command early, connecting on 65 percent of his first serves and 37 winners. Next up for Nadal will be 22nd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, who ousted US 13th seed John Isner. Nadal is 9-1 against the German, losing only last year on Halle grass and winning their most recent meeting at Monte Carlo in April. “I had some good matches against him, especially on hard court. Basically I know a little bit how I have to play,” Kohlschreiber said. Azarenka, who lost to Serena Williams in last year’s final, outlasted French 26th seed Alize Cornet 6-7 (2/7), 6-3,

is eager to rekindle his rivalry with Rafael Nadal for the first time at the US Open in what would be a blockbuster clash at night, when he has been virtually unbeatable. The 17-time major winner could face Nadal in the quarters with the dream match-up almost certain to take place under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Federer has won 22 of 23 matches. His only loss in the traditionally raucous evening sessions came at the hands of Juan Martin Del Potro in the 2009 final. “I understand the urge of the press to try to go there already, which is entirely normal,” said Federer, keen not to get too carried away as he still has to get past Tommy Robredo in Monday’s fourth round before a potential quarter-final match-up with Nadal. AFP 6-2. Next up for Azarenka will be Serbian 13th seed Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 French Open champion who edged Christina McHale 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Kvitova, diagnosed with a virus Friday, made 27 unforced errors and seven double faults in losing to 81st-ranked US wildcard Alison Riske 6-3, 6-0. “I had a fever,” Kvitova had AFP said.

Murray, Serena in Sunday special NEW YORK: Defending champions Andy Murray and Serena Williams as well as Novak Djokovic are the Sunday special acts at the US Open while former title winner Lleyton Hewitt looks to continue his dream run. Third seed Murray, who is also the Olympic and Wimbledon champion, disposed of Leonardo Mayer in the second round and now faces another Mayer for a place in the fourth round. Murray has a 2-0 career lead over the 29-yearold German, winning their most recent meeting in two tiebreak sets on the Madrid clay earlier this year. Mayer has twice been a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2004 and 2012 but has never got beyond the third round in New York. World number one Williams will have the chance to avenge her exit from the Australian Open when she faces compatriot Sloane Stephens for a quarterfinal spot. Williams’ relationship with Stephens was strained after her younger rival upset the 16-time Grand Slam champion at Melbourne. “It’s going to be tough,” Williams said. “Sloane is playing so well. I’m always so happy for her. She’s doing great. I’m really proud of Sloane. It’s going to be a really good match.” American 15th seed Stephens faces the superstar she accused of disrespectful intimidation tactics and mind games in Australia. “It’ll be epic and something a lot of people will be looking forward to,” Stephens said. “I’m AFP excited about it.”

The 22-year-old Raonic stands at 11 in the world and is seeded 10 at the US Open where on Saturday he reached the fourth round for a second successive year. In contrast, John Isner is America’s highest-ranked player at 17 in the world and carrying the burden of attempting to win his country’s first Grand Slam men’s singles title since Andy Roddick in New York in 2003. “Sort of the relief is definitely there that obviously there’s a lot more pressure on Americans. Manuel Pellegrini wants more from City

MANCHESTER: Manchester

City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes there is much more to come from his side after their second successive home win in the Premier League. After securing a 4-0 win over Newcastle in their first match, City stumbled to a 3-2 defeat at Cardiff, before making hard work of a 2-0 victory against Hull at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. City had been punished for sloppy defending against Cardiff, but it was their forward line that spluttered against Hull as they struggled to break the newly-promoted side down until the second half when substitute Alvaro Negredo headed home. And Pellegrini acknowledged the last two games have shown him the Premier League is going to be anything but straightforward. “Everyone told me last week, when we lost a game with two set pieces, that now I must know what the Premier league is like,” he said. “I know the Premier League is very difficult every match and you must play 100 percent every week. “Hull are a good team but to win 2-0 is a good score and we can’t win 4-0 or 5-0 without any problems.

Manchester City’s Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini looks on during the English Premier League football match against Hull City at the Etihad AFP/PAUL ELLIS Stadium in Manchester on Saturday. “That’s the reality of the Premier League. It’s no surprise. I know what the Premier League is. It’s important to get the three points. “I never expected all the games would be the same as Newcastle. Rabiot saves PSG blushes PARIS: Teenager Adrien Rabiot came off the bench to spur French titleholders Paris Saint-Germain past promoted Guingamp 2-0 on Saturday, as the midfielder netted a decisive injury-time goal at the Parc des Princes. PSG’s stuttering start to the season appeared set to continue as the woodwork twice denied Laurent Blanc’s side, but 18-year-old Rabiot struck a minute into stoppage time before Zlatan Ibrahimovic made the points safe. The win takes PSG to within a point of leaders Marseille, who host third-place Monaco on Sunday. Last year’s top scorer Ibrahimovic, without a goal in his opening three matches, almost opened his account for the season inside two minutes as he struck the base of Mamadou Samassa’s post from a free-kick. Edinson Cavani then saw a glancing header at the near post turned over by Samassa before the frame of the goal again came to Guingamp’s rescue as Thiago Silva headed the ensuing corner against the AFP crossbar.

we have the quality to do it but I never expected it would always be like against Newcastle.” City had to wait until midway through the second half for Negredo to make the breakthrough against Hull, with the Spain striker heading in from Pablo Zabaleta’s cross.

Pellegrini’s side made the game safe when Yaya Toure curled in a free-kick from 20 yards in the final minute. Negredo’s strike was his second since making the £20 million move from Sevilla in the summer but he has not started for the club yet. Pellegrini, who is set to sign Atletico Madrid’s Argentina defender Michael Demichelis, is confident Negredo will be able to make a significant impact over the course of the season. “I expect from Alvaro Negredo exactly what we are seeing every time he plays,” Pellegrini said. “He played some minutes the first time against Newcastle, he scored a legal goal but it was not valid. “The second game he played some minutes and also scored a goal and he played 45 minutes and scored one goal more. “With Alvaro and Edin (Dzeko) we have two very good strikers and we need both of them. “During August we played just three matches, the weekends only. When we return after the international break, we have to play eight matches every month so everyone that has a good possibility will have a chance to AFP start.

Tevez on target as Juve rout Lazio again MILAN: Carlos Tevez scored his second Serie A goal in as many weeks as champions Juventus thumped Lazio 4-1 to sit second in the early standings behind Napoli, 4-2 winners earlier at Chievo. Juventus put four unanswered goals past Lazio on their way to winning the Italian Super Cup two weeks ago, when Tevez scored his maiden goal for the Bianconeri. Having secured all three points for Antonio Conte’s side in a 1-0 win over Sampdoria last week, the Argentine capped a dominant display by the hosts marked notably by a brace from Chilean Arturo Vidal with a fine individual effort in the 80th minute. Juve coach Antonio Conte said: “Putting four goals past Lazio again is a sign that our form is getting better, both on a collective and individual level. “We were spectacular in

32 Madrid, Barça look to maintain perfect starts

MADRID: Real Madrid and Barcelona will be looking to maintain their perfect starts to the Liga season when they face tough tests against Athletic Bilbao and Valencia on Sunday. Madrid are first up when they host Athletic at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first midday kick-off of the new campaign. Los Blancos have been made to wait to welcome Gareth Bale to the Spanish capital as his prolonged transfer from Tottenham Hotspur has dragged on for another week, but coach Carlo Ancelotti is more concerned with how those already at his disposal have performed so far. Real have won both their matches against Real Betis and Granada by just the odd goal and the Italian is looking for an improvement against an Athletic side he rates highly. “The match tomorrow isn’t easy because Athletic have won their first two matches and have a very good and professional manager who I know well,” he said on Saturday. “Our objective is to start playing better. We want to play with intensity and I think tomorrow is just the moment to do so.” Sami Khedira is available again after missing Monday night’s win at Granada through injury and former Real Sociedad man Asier Illarramendi could make his Madrid debut as he also takes his place in Ancelotti’s squad for the first time after a disrupted pre-season due to injury. Ander Herrera meanwhile has been included by Athletic boss Ernesto Valverde in his squad despite Manchester United’s interest in signing him before Monday’s AFP transfer deadline.
