The fanfare was missing and a sombre mood prevailed at the Lotus Pond residence of YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy today. MLAs, MPs, and City corporators started to arrive early in the morning to be with their leader who began a ‘fast-unto-death’ to keep the State untied. Jagan greeted leaders and well-wishers and told them he would not relent until the Centre met his ‘just’ demands of Seemandhra. He announced that a party delegation was being sent to New Delhi.

The CM’s act was successfully convincing party MLAs to stick to their posts until the Telangana creation bill was debated in the AP Assembly. This was a strategy to keep the government alive. HYDERABAD: Is Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy acting on the directions of party high command which has decided to go ahead with the process of creation of separate Telangana state? If Friday’s political developments are anything to go by, it becomes evident that the CM was indeed discharging his duties assigned to him by the party high command. The CM not only successfully convinced his party colleagues, especially cabinet ministers and MLAs not to quit from their posts but also the administration. This move was taken to ensure that the law and order situation did not go down following the approval of Telangana, a note by the union cabinet in Seemandhra region. Reacting on this, a close aide of AICC AP in-charge, Digvijay Singh told Postnoon, “The CM may be saying that he would not preside over the bifurcation of state process in his public meeting

and press interactions. But let me tell you, he himself voluntarily took the responsibility of presiding over the division of the state process. It is only after his approval, the congress party and union government went ahead with the decision of the bifurcation of the state process. He is a party to all the decisions taken by party high command and union government,” he said. The leader further said that the CM has no option but to preside over the division process. “He will have to preside over the division. If he declines, he has to do so now. The party has many options including imposition of president’s rule to take ahead the Telangana state creation process,” the leader asserted. However, another congress leader from Telangana said that the party high command does not want to affect any change of guard in the state at this juncture. “Our party high command wants the government to function here. It also wants to concurrently continue the Telangana state creation process,” he noted. He further added that the CM’s act of successfully convincing party MLAs to stick to their posts until the Telangana creation bill was debated in AP Assembly was a strategy to keep the government alive and ensure the smooth passage of state bifurcation. “He convinced cabinet ministers and MLAs not to quit their posts and wait until the Telangana State Bill is moved in the house for a debate. He asked all the leaders to defeat the motion as well. It is nothing but a strategy to ensure the safety of the government. The reason for this is that the outcome of the assembly debate viz. in case of the resolution is defeated will not have any bearing on union government’s decision to carve out the Telangana state” he said.

Serial rapist nabbed by cops The police have said that the accused preyed on women from poor families with the lure of a job. Mohammed Subhan m.subhan@postnoon.com

A

police team from Pahadishareef has arrested a person by the name of Shaik Osman who has allegedly sexually assaulted dozens of women. It is claimed that the accused was attempting to rape a young woman

when he was nabbed by the police. He was brought before a magistrate and sent to prison. The accused, 40, is a resident of Shahjahan colony in Pahadishareef and ran a dairy farm. Recently, a 22-year-old girl, residing in the same area, lodged a police complaint against Osman stating that he attempted to sexu-

ally assault her after he asked her to visit him, on the pretext of offering her a job, at his farm. The woman said she managed to escape and went straight to the police station where she registered a case. It was after this incident that dozens of women began to stream forward to lodge complaints against Osman.

Drunken man slays wife It is alleged that the accused physically abused his wife while drunk and was known to have a slew of extra-marital affairs.

A

man brutally murdered his wife in front of their eldest daughter. The police claim that the man, Fasiuddin, killed his wife, Nasreen, over a dowry issue. After committing the act, Fasiuddin, fled the scene of the crime. The incident took place Marpally Mandal in Rangareddy district. The Marpally police have registered a case of murder against the accused with the help of the eyewitness’ account provided by his daughter, and are currently hunting him down. The accused, Mohammed Fasiuddin, a 45-year-old resident of Marpally Mandal is a tea-powder vendor. He had five children with his wife Nasreen Begum. It is alleged that in spite of him receiving dowry from his wife’s family, the accused, a chronic alcoholic, wanted more. According to the investigating officers Fasiuddin had harassed his wife on this matter over the last few years and was demanding more dowry from her parents. It is alleged that he physically abused her while drunk and was known to have a slew of extra-marital affairs. On the night of October 1, the accused came home in an inebriated condition and proceeded to beat his wife. She suffered fatal injuries when he attacked her with a large stone. Her screams forced her daughter awake. The accused then swiftly fled the scene, while the daughter rushed to the neighbours to inform them of what had happened.

N

early 50 per cent of the mobile towers are illegal in the city, threatening citizens’ lives as these are installed without permission, but the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is neglecting the issue and calculating the fee for these towers instead of removing them. As per the record of the GHMC, 3400 cell towers are on record and legal but the number of the towers in city is more than 5000, including 2G and 3G, due to which the environment is being polluted and causing dreadful health problems to the citizens from the radiations being released by the towers. 3G technology has become common for users now a days, while the service providers seeking permission for 4G, the environmentalists are urging not to give permission for the 4G services because the rays which are released by the towers are more hazardous which can cause severe health diseases. An environmentalist, and retired professor from Osmania University, K Purushotham Rao, said to Postnoon, “that any kind of radiation is harmful for human, environment ,wildlife and birds as well, currently we are living in between rays which are spread everywhere in soci-

ety, we know everything but we got addicted to the services in few years and we need more”. Moreover he added that the “group of the environmentalists opposed 3G services to enter in the country, but the mobile lobby said that the rays of 3G services are lower in grade, neither much harmful to the environment, nor causes health problems but the

fact is that, there would be nothing like lower grade, radiation is radiation and it harms at any cost, and damage cells in our body which causes cancer, or brain tumor”. “Atmosphere became strange especially for the sparrows which disappeared after the cell phone towers were installed in the city, we rarely see these birds

in our surroundings, and the children are not familiar with the birds as they are looking at them in television or books only”, Professor Purushotham, said. According to the town planning officer G V Raghu, “as per the records there are nearly 3,400 cell towers though it is widely believed to double the

ALLEGING THAT BOTSA DID NOT STALL THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT’S DECISION, THE PROTESTORS ALSO ATTACKED HOUSE OF A RELATIVE OF SATYANARAYANA. Tension prevailed in the town last night as protestors, who continued sitin for more than 12 hours, set afire to the office of Satya Cable Network owned by Satyanarayana. They also

pelted the fire engines with stones which had rushed to the scene to douse the fire. The integrationists have been shouting slogans denouncing Botsa and other congress leaders who failed to stall T birth. The mob also damaged the vehicle of superintendent of police, who had reached there to take stock of the situation. Alleging that Satyanarayana did not stall the central government’s decision, the protestors also attacked house of a relative of Satyanarayana and a school owned by another family member. Earlier in the day, the protestors also targeted a college and a lodge owned by Satyanarayana. They also laid siege to his residence and clashed with police. Police fired teargas shells to disperse the mob, which damaged five police vehicles. Three protestors and a policeman were injured in the violence. TN cop injured in op against militants in Chittoor HYDERABAD: A Tamil Nadu policeman was injured during a search operation in a town in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district, when suspected terrorists hiding in a house opened fire Saturday, police said. A police party from neighbouring Tamil Nadu was conducting the operation following information about presence of suspected terrorists in a house in Puttur town, as they came under fire from the suspects in the house. Police forces from both the states have surrounded the house and efforts to flush out the suspects is still on. Senior police officials from both the states have rushed to the spot. A senior police officer in Hyderabad said personnel from OCTOPUS, the anti-terror wing of the Andhra Pradesh Police, were being sent to Puttur. The ‘growing’ pains of Miley Miley Cyrus is grabbing headlines for the wrong reasons again. A row with pop veteran Sinead O’Connor is raising questions if she may be the latest onetime child star heading for a fall. Michael THURSTON Agence France-Presse

LOS ANGELES: Miley Cyrus is grabbing headlines for the wrong reasons again. A public row with pop veteran Sinead O’Connor is raising questions over whether she may be the latest onetime child star heading for a fall. The former “Hannah Montana” actress turned pop princess burst into the wider public’s mind with her sexually suggestive twerking performance at the MTV video music award show in August. Then came the video for her latest single “Wrecking Ball,” in which she swings naked on a demolition ball and licks a sledgehammer in an almost laughably suggestive manner. The 20-year-old has defended herself by saying she is merely growing up. And the publicity will certainly do no harm to sales of her records.

THE 20-YEAR-OLD HAS DEFENDED HERSELF BY SAYING SHE IS MERELY GROWING UP. AND THE PUBLICITY WILL CERTAINLY DO NO HARM TO SALES OF HER RECORDS. Miley in action with Robin thicke But others warn she could be following in the footsteps of the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and more recently Zac Efron, as she makes the transition to the grown-up world. “There is such a thing as bad publicity,” Robert Thompson, a professor of pop culture of Syracuse University, told AFP. “Especially these child stars in their transition years, some of the publicity turns them from people who actually had promising careers to... objects of mockery. “Lindsay Lohan really suffered that,” he said, while Miley is “well on that path... Whenever you hear Miley Cyrus mentioned in the last couple of weeks, it’s always been in a form of mockery, and often disdain.” In her latest publicity-fueling act, Cyrus has stoked a public row with Irish star O’Connor, who has threatened legal action. The tit-for-tat began with an interview in the latest issue of Rolling Stone -- with Cyrus on its cover, topless and tongue out again -- in which she said her “Wrecking Ball” video was inspired by O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” The Irish singer responded with an open letter saying she was glad to be a role model, but advising the young star against

“allowing yourself to be pimped” by the music industry. Miley fired back with tweets referring to troubled ex-child star Amanda Bynes, as well as O’Connor’s own mental health problems -- provoking the Irish singer’s threat to sue. “How do you feel when your friend Britney Spears is mocked and humiliated for having had mental health problems?” O’Connor wrote. Celebrity was all well and good, the Irish singer said, but warned: “You will become the victim of it shortly. Soon it will be you the media ‘crazy’ .. and you will not enjoy it.” Hollywood has a long tradition of child stars struggling to grow up. Michael Jackson and “Home Alone” actor Macaulay Culkin were followed by a generation of troubled teens including Demi Lovato and “High School Musical” star Efron, who admitted this summer that he had checked into rehab. Justin Bieber has also had missteps of late as he moves away from his teen idol image, including several brushes with the law -- a fact referred to by Cyrus in her Rolling Stone interview. “I do mentor him in a way. Because I’ve been doing this ...

for a long time, and I already transitioned, and I don’t think he’s quite done it yet,” she told the magazine. It wasn’t always thus. Thompson pointed to Annette Funicello, the US actress who died in April aged 70. She started out as a Disney star like Cyrus, Efron, Spears and others, but then went on to star in the 1960s cleanfun “Beach Party” films. “When she got older and grew up there was cultural space for that kind of innocent pretty virginal character, with all those ‘Beach Blanket Bingo’ movies,” said the pop culture academic, referring to a 1965 film starring Funicello. Nowadays “there’s no equivalent any more... there are so few places for them to go, other than the ‘tarting up young women’ place,” he said. Unlike Lohan, Cyrus hasn’t been convicted of a crime, and unlike Spears or Efron, she has had no public break-

downs or spells in drug or other rehab programs -though she admits to experimenting with drugs. All she’s done is raise eyebrows -- and draw scorn. But with today’s ever more intense 24/7 media coverage and constant online comment and scrutiny, it’s not going to get any easier. “I’m amazed this doesn’t happen to every single solitary child star, when you are that young and you get all of that success, and all of that money, and the power that goes with it,” Thompson said. “That’s hard enough for a seasoned rational adult to take. I don’t know how any kid ever makes it through.” The “good-old-HannahMontana” Miley.

250-year-old temple reconstructed

CHEUNI (HIMACHAL PRADESH):

An over 250-year-old prominent Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Hadimba in this village in the picturesque Seraj Valley in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh has been reconstructed. The new temple, a replication of the one that stood at the site earlier, will be reopened for the public Saturday, the first day of the auspicious “navratras”, temple officials said. The old temple was demolished after the wood used in its construction had decayed. “The temple of Hadimba Devi, the prominent deity of the Seraj Valley, has been rebuilt in typical hill architecture,” temple trust chairman Rudramani told IANS. He said the temple, which was restored at a cost of over Rs.1 crore, was reconstructed in one and a half years at its original site after the old temple was demolished. “The new one is an exact replica of the original one,” Rudramani said. The temple, located amidst forests of deodar in Saraho village in Cheuni panchayat, is some 90 km from Mandi town and 250 km from the state capital Shimla.

Patnaik not okay with Modi

Another temple trustee Fateh Singh said the logs and bricks were removed from the original structure and documented. The new ones were placed at the same place and location to maintain the original architecture. A few deodar logs in the demolished structure had inscriptions of 1855, which indicated that the temple was last reconstructed in that year, temple officials said. “New logs have replaced decayed ones. Special emphasis was on carving work. For this, special craftsmen were hired. The stonework on the outer walls has been done as per the old style,” he said.

Egypt on the brink, again as four die in clashes JAY DESHMUKH & SAMER AL-ATRUSH

CAIRO: Four people died in fierce clashes that erupted in Cairo Friday when Islamist supporters of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi protested against the military that ousted him. Fighting also broke out after weekly Muslim prayers in Alexandria and the Upper Egypt province of Assiut as Islamists took to the streets protesting Morsi's July 3 ouster and subsequent jailing, AFP correspondents and state media reported. "Four people were killed in Cairo. The dead do not include members of police or security forces," Khaled al-Khatib, head of Egypt's emergency services told AFP, without elaborating. Egypt's ambulance services head Ahmed al-Ansari confirmed the death toll in Cairo and said another 45 people were wounded in nationwide violence. The protests were called by the Anti-Coup Alliance led by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood in defiance of an ongoing crackdown by the country's new armybacked authorities in which some 2,000 Islamists have been jailed. Alarmed by the violence, both the United States and UN chief Ban Ki-moon renewed their pleas for peaceful protests. The protesters "have a responsibility to protest peacefully, to not incite violence, to not undertake violence of their own,"

deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters in Washington. In New York, Ban stressed "the importance of peaceful protest, respect for freedom of assembly and commitment to non-violence," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky. Cairo witnessed the fiercest clashes, with Islamists fighting opponents of Morsi and security forces, mainly around Tahrir Square, epicentre of the 2011 revolt that toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak. Police fired live rounds into

the air and tear gas to prevent Islamists from entering the square, as several hundred proMorsi demonstrators chanted "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest). The warning shots succeeded in dispersing the protesters from Abdel Moneim Riad Square, which is next to Tahrir, pushing them back towards nearby Ramses Square. The army closed all the entrances to Tahrir Square, and most shops in downtown Cairo remained shuttered. A separate group of protesters marched towards the

defence ministry, but that protest later broke up after brief clashes. Thousands of Morsi supporters also marched in the Nasr City district of Cairo towards Rabaa al-Adawiya Square, where security forces dismantled a massive protest camp on August 14 as part of a crackdown that left hundreds dead. They flashed the four fingers sign, a symbol of Rabaa, and carried banners with pictures of those killed, chanting "Revenge! Revenge!" before dispersing. Meanwhile, hundreds of Morsi supporters chanted slo-

gans against the military and army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi when they clashed with opponents in the capital's Maniyal neighbourhood, a witness said, adding that both sides fired birdshot at each other. Clashes also occurred in the Shubra neighbourhood but ended after security forces intervened and chased away the two groups, another witness told AFP. In another incident Khaled Dawood, spokesman for the liberal Al-Dostour party, was stabbed in Cairo, state news agency MENA reported, saying he was wounded in the chest and one hand. Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, was ousted following mass protests against his year-long rule. He has been held at an unknown location since then. The ability of the Anti-Coup Alliance to bring large numbers of supporters into the streets has waned following the security crackdown in August. More than 2,000 Islamists have been arrested, including top leaders of the Brotherhood, and the organisation's activities were banned by an Egyptian court last month. The court also ordered the Brotherhood's assets seized, delivering a powerful blow to the organisation. More demonstrations were expected on Sunday, when Egypt marks the anniversary of its 1973 war with Israel.

Italy to resume Madonna reveals search for bodies rape at knifepoint

Resolution on circumcision

LAMPEDUSA: Italian emergency services hoped to resume the search for bodies despite rough seas after the worst ever Mediterranean shipwreck tragedy, in which 111 African asylum-seekers are confirmed dead and around 200 more are still missing. With the search for bodies off the island of Lampedusa suspended Friday due to bad weather, an emotional Pope Francis said it was "a day of tears" in a "savage world" that ignored refugees. The government asked Europe to help stem the influx of migrants, as the country mourned the dead. Islanders in the tiny fishing community held a mass and a silent torch-lit procession, as flags across Italy flew at half mast Friday.

EDITORIALS POLITICOS in the making It is appreciable that the Andhra University is planning to train budding politicians on the lines of the MIT School of Government, Pune. This attempt by the varsity to support people interested in joining politics as a profession will help many. MIT-SOG is the first institute of its kind in India and Asia to initiate a one-year full-time residential academic programme in politics in 2005 for a career in politics, in association with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. Now, Andhra University’s plan to introduce an academic programme, vocational course initially, for a week for engineering and medical students, and other professional courses is heart-warming. It should be expanded as an independent programme after studying the response. Politics is often mistaken by the people of our country. It is the foundation for a healthy democracy and will bring character to the system. Upcoming politicians need formal training in political skills, ethics and morals and speaking in public to make them leaders with adequate knowledge of the system. Mock parliament sessions on practical politics and theory-based examinations, interaction with leaders from the village panchayat level to international forums and exposure to varying perspectives planned from November 1 on a nominal fee, will be useful to people from other professions. A programme at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore to help aspiring women politicians hone leadership skills could be a lesson in learning for AP.

A HOLIDAY FOR Dasara? Confusion surrounds the Dasara celebration date this year. While the State government has declared Dasara holiday on October 14, the festival will be celebrated on October 13 in many parts of AP. Dasara is listed on Oct 14 as part of general holidays, based on which educational institutions and commercial establishments declared a holiday. If Dasara is celebrated on October 13, the government need not declare a holiday as it is a Sunday.

arlier last week, my kindergarten classmate shared a wonderful cartoon on Facebook. It was an image of two men in prison. They were standing with backs against each other and each facing an easel. They were painting, it seemed, what they saw from the window. The man on the right had painted the black bars of the prison and little stretches of green and a few trees. But the view was obstructed by the black bars. The second man painted the landscape in all its beauty without the black bars. It turned out beautifully. No doubt, each was painting the landscape based on his mind’s eye and the perspective from which he saw the beauty. In his mind, he was not imprisoned, and this enabled him to admire the beauty that he saw

IT THEN OCCURRED TO HIM THAT HIS FRIEND WAS ALL ALONG SAYING THOSE WONDERFUL THINGS AND PAINTING THOSE VISUAL IMAGES TO GET AWAY FROM HIS OWN GRIEF AND TO ALSO TAKE HIS FRIEND ALONG ON THE JOURNEY. outside the window. This reminds me of another story about two men in a hospital who were sharing a room. One man was bed-ridden and the second was terminally ill. The second patient’s bed was near the window. A screen separated the two patient’s beds. Over time, they made friends and shared each other’s life stories, happiness, desires and pain. One day, the bed-ridden man asked his roommate to tell him a story or anything interesting to pass the time. The patient by the window said that he would describe to him everything he saw outside the window. He would see new things each time and it would help them believe that they’re outside, free from illness. And so the man by the window started to talk about the lovely lake

overlooking the park, which was just outside the window. He spoke about children playing in the park, ducks swimming in the lake, visitors feeding the ducks, kids sailing their model boats in the lake, and so on. One day, he spoke about lovers in the park. He described the beautiful sunset. He said the colours of the sky kept changing and it was beautiful. Another day, he described the rain and spoke about the lushness of the lawns and the leaves shivering in the breeze. Another day, he described a marriage procession that was passing by. He described what the groom and bride were wearing and how the friends and relatives were dancing away. The bed-ridden man didn’t hear any music or band playing but he listened and enjoyed the

description anyway. Many months passed before the man by the window passed away. The bed-ridden man grieved for his friend and asked to be moved to the bed by the window. Once there, he slowly propped himself up on the bed and looked out the window hoping to see the lake and the park. All he saw was a blank wall. He was confused. When the nurse came in, he told the nurse how his friend had described many beautiful things from the window but all he sees now is a wall. The nurse said that the man’s friend was blind. He was shocked and thought about it. It then occurred to him that his friend was all along saying those wonderful things and painting those visual images to get away from his own grief and to also take his friend along on the journey. He moved beyond his visual impairment to see life and all its colours anyway. He also did that to encourage his friend and to tell him that life is beautiful and he must get well soon in order to enjoy it.

Qaeda in Syria wants to control Iraq, Turkey borders The inside story

JIHADISTS HAVE EVEN SOUGHT TO JUSTIFY THE STRATEGY ON INTERNET FORUMS BY ACCUSING WESTERN-BACKED GROUPS, INCLUDING AHFAD AL-RASUL AND THE NORTHERN STORM BRIGADE, OF ACTING LIKE THE US-FUNDED “SAHWA” WHO FOUGHT AL-QAEDA IN IRAQ.

l-Qaeda in Syria is fighting to drive rivals out of areas bordering Turkey and Iraq in a bid to control territory stretching from Iraq into northern Syria, various sources say. Across the north and east, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has set up checkpoints on roads to border crossings, and opened fronts to crush other rebel groups fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad. Residents have told AFP of a strategy that involves ISIL taking over resources and routes using brutal methods aimed at forcing the population into submission. Analysts and activists on the ground have also noted the tactic. “ISIL has been acting in such a way as to aggressively assert itself within the complex multidimensional insurgent theatres in northern and eastern Syria,” said C Lister of IHS Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre. Jihadists have even sought to justify the strategy on Internet forums by accusing Westernbacked groups, including Ahfad

al-Rasul and the Northern Storm brigade, of acting like the USfunded “Sahwa” who fought AlQaeda in Iraq. But Lister said ISIL had adopted a “perceivable strategy of acquiring and consolidating control of areas on Syria’s borders with both Iraq and Turkey”, ever since it came on the scene in the late spring. “This allows the group easy

access to new recruits, sources of funding and supplies,” he told AFP. “It’s by no means impossible that it intends to put a stranglehold on the ability of moderates (rebels) to secure sustainable levels of supplies from across the borders,” Lister added. Havidar, a Kurdish-Syrian activist and citizen journalist who has covered fighting

between ISIL and Kurds, said ISIL’s endgame was to establish an Islamic state. “ISIL doesn’t have an ideological problem with the Kurds or with anyone else. It just wants no other group to have any arms or self-sufficiency, to create a state that extends from northern Syria into Iraq,” he told AFP. Another activist in Raqa, near the Turkish border, said it

was now virtually impossible to leave Syria without crossing through one of their checkpoints. ISIL has a grip on Raqa, the only provincial capital in Syria that is completely out of Assad’s control. Simmering tension boils overThough tensions between it and other rebel groups — even Islamists — have simmered for months, the opposition has sought to keep that antagonism buried. But ISIL’s takeover of the border town of Azaz in midSeptember, at the expense of the area’s Northern Storm brigade, brought tensions to a head. AFP

n 2009, Ed O’Bannon, a former basketball star for the University of California, Los Angeles, sued the NCAA. for licensing his “likeness” for use in video games and broadcasts without permission or payment. Last week, two other defendants in the suit, EA Sports and Collegiate Licensing Company, settled a consolidated suit for $40 million; current and former players whose likenesses appeared in the video games could potentially get a share. But the NCAA won’t go along. Its chief legal officer, Donald Remy, said last week that he would take the case “all the way to the Supreme Court” if necessary. The involvement of current players creates an immediate problem for the NCAA, which must decide if accepting settlement money counts as a violation of amateur status for the players. Of course, that issue pales in comparison to the trouble the NCAA will face if it loses this suit. O’Bannon’s lawyers contend that the NCAA and its member schools violate antitrust law by requiring student-

Players essentially forfeit their rights to enter into individual licensing agreements, they say, while the NCAA is free to sell their names, images and likenesses without passing along a cent. WASHINGTON: Republicans launched a furious counterattack on the White House as the US government shutdown dragged deep into a fourth day, but no fresh path to ending the crisis was offered. With lawmakers heading into the weekend, Congress appeared no closer to resolving the impasse, even as a far more challenging fiscal hurdle -- the need to raise the US debt ceiling or suffer a catastrophic credit default -- was barely 12 days away. “This isn’t some damn game,” boomed House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, seeking to seize the moral high ground, after a report cited an unnamed official saying that the White House is benefiting from the shutdown, which has sent hundreds of thousands home without pay. “This morning, I get the Wall Street Journal out and it says, ‘well, we don’t care how long this lasts, because we’re winning,’” Boehner said, theatrically waving a copy of the paper. “The American people don’t want their government shut down and neither do I,” he added. “All we’re asking for is to sit down and have a discussion, reopen the government and bring fairness to the American people under ‘Obamacare,’” the health care law that is President Barack Obama’s signature domestic achievement. The White House on Friday tried to contain the damage from the Journal quote, which dominated the media messaging war raging between Obama and his Republican foes on Capitol Hill. Obama even staged a photo op -- a rare stroll outside the White House to a nearby sandwich shop -- to try and arrest the fallout. “There’s no winning when families don’t have any certainty over whether they are going to get paid or not,” he said of the first shutdown in 17 years. “This shutdown could be over today,” Obama added, call-

ing on Boehner to call a vote on a temporary funding measure to reopen government. Both the House of Representatives and the Senate will convene rare Saturday sessions. But some Republican pragmatists who have signaled they would vote to pass a fresh spending bill worried that such a resolution is no longer achievable. “I think that ship has sailed,” congressman Michael Grimm said. “We’re getting too close to the debt ceiling vote. It looks like the only thing that’s going to work right now is a dialogue.” Obama is refusing to negotiate with Republicans over budget issues until they pass a temporary bill to open the government and agree to raise the $16.7 trillion US statutory borrowing limit -- without which

Republicans are demanding the president enter into talks on their goal to defund or delay his health reform law — a step Obama refuses. Washington could default on its debts for the first time ever later this month. But Republicans are demanding the president enter into talks on their goal to defund or delay his health reform law -- a step Obama refuses to take. “I was at the White House the other night and listened to the president some 20 times explain to me why he wasn’t going to negotiate,” Boehner complained.

Obama meanwhile digested an embarrassing setback to his foreign policy and the US image abroad after he was forced to cancel plans to head to Asia for two diplomatic summits. On Thursday he took the decision to cancel his visit to Bali for the APEC summit and Brunei for the East Asia summit, in what analysts described as a blow to his signature policy of shifting more diplomatic and military weight towards rising Asia. The shutdown has forced hundreds of thousands of federal workers to stay home without pay, while monuments such as the Statue of Liberty have been barricaded and national parks closed. Amid the acrimony over who is to blame, Democrats quietly acknowledged that the two sides had opened lines of communication, after the White House meet-

ing with Obama and top congressional leaders went nowhere. “There are talks going on,” Senator Chuck Schumer said, but he would not elaborate. Grimm said he would like to see a “grand bargain” emerge, which would include entitlement and tax reform. But Schumer said crafting such a massive package while government is shut down “is virtually an impossibility.” The House of Representatives voted Friday on a string of mini bills to open favored areas of the government, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and nutrition programs for lowincome women and children. But the White House has warned that in the unlikely event the bills make it through the Democratic-led Senate, the president would veto them.

Return to self-sufficiency in food-loving France The number of organic farms has grown 104 percent in five years, and the organic farming industry is now worth four billion euros ($5.4 billion) a year. But Jerome and Marylin said they see major problems with organic food, too, including the demanding system for getting products certified. SAINT-DIE-DES-VOSGES: Like many in food-loving France, Jerome and Marylin are serious about what goes on their plates — enough to quit the city, tired of factory-farmed goods and pricey organic foods, and return to the self-sufficient farming of bygone days. Despite having no rural background, they bought an old farm deep in the countryside of northeastern France and launched a new life as small-scale farmers in May 2012. Since then, they have reclaimed a progressively larger share of the food they and their two sons eat, producing it themselves instead of buying it at the store. “This year, we started a vegetable garden and bought our first animals -- two pigs, three goats and some rabbits,” said Marylin, 37. Their hillside farm sits at the end of a dirt road near the village of Saint-Die-Des-Vosges -- a big old house surrounded by trees where apples, pears, cher-

ries, plums and walnuts grow. What began as a plan to move to “somewhere a little bit isolated” has gradually become something else, said Jerome, 38.0 “We said to ourselves, ‘Why not go further?’” He said his goal is to “return to a reasonable approach” to food by cutting down the family’s intake of pesticides, and meat from animals reared on a diet of genetically modified foods and antibiotics. “That means we can’t eat as much meat as we do now,” he said. “I don’t trust today’s agriculture anymore,” he added. “I want to actually do something, because just talking about it won’t change the system.” A broadcast technician by training, Jerome still works about 10 days a month in Strasbourg, 90 kilometres (60 miles) away. Marylin stays home, works on the farm and takes care of their two sons, aged seven and 10.

FRANCE IS INCREASINGLY BECOMING CONCERNED ABOUT THE IMPACT OF INDUSTRIAL FOOD. They are not militant environmentalists. Still, some of their relatives find their new life bizarre, they said. “Our parents are very caught up in the post-war drive to produce and consume. They don’t understand us very well,” said Jerome. But France, a country whose culinary culture runs deep, is increasingly concerned about the impact of industrial agriculture on the food people eat. Last year, 3.5 percent of the land cultivated in France was devoted to organic farming -- a small fraction of the total, but an 85-percent increase in five years. The number of organic farms has grown 104 percent in five years, and the organic farm-

Pick

ing industry is now worth four billion euros ($5.4 billion) a year. But Jerome and Marylin said they see major problems with organic food, too, including the demanding system for getting products certified. “There are two ways of doing things today: organic and industrial,” said Jerome. “We need to change that vision. “Organic produce is expensive, and also, people don’t necessarily look at how far the products had to be transported to the supermarket.”

PATIENCE

AND A PAIR OF PIGS

According to data compiled by the US solar panel firm One Block Off the Grid, it takes about two acres to feed a family of four for a year, on a mostly vegetarian diet with eggs, dairy and a little meat from three pigs. Jerome and Marylin have devoted one hectare (2.5 acres), out of the five that surround their house, to their animals and their vegetable garden, which

at the

has a small greenhouse. “We haven’t bought any vegetables since spring,” said Marylin.

THE

REST WILL TAKE PATIENCE

The couple’s pigs are black Gascons, a breed they chose for its heartiness but which takes 15 months to fatten, they said. “With other pigs it only takes six months, but you have to give them antibiotics and concentrated food,” said Jerome. They will not be butchered until next summer. By then, the goats will have started giving milk. Marylin said the family plans to learn to make cheese. They also plan to buy chickens, ducks and two more pigs, and plant strawberries, raspberries and more fruit trees. Their target is to grow all their own vegetables year-round and 80 percent of their fruits within a year, eating some fresh and making jams, sauces and homemade canned food with the rest.

‘SILKROAD’ MEETS ITS END The crackdown on Silk Road is the latest in a series of moves by law enforcement against digital currencies, which critics say are a magnet for drug transactions, moneylaundering and other illegal activities. BOSTON: Before it was shut down by US agents this week, people looking to buy street drugs, hire hackers or hitmen, and acquire stolen e-commerce accounts anonymously online could go to Silk Road, the Amazon.com of vice. For more than two years, according to U.S. authorities, the website allowed users to buy and sell illegal goods and services on the assumption that they were safe from the law. The buyers were cloaked by technologydesigned to keep identities secret and transactions were processed with bitcoin digital currency. Silk Road's alleged creator, 29-year-old Ross William Ulbricht, was arrested in San Francisco by FBI agents on Tuesday after investigators apparently linked his personal email address to the website, which has been shut down. Ulbricht's lawyer Brandon LeBlanc, a public defender, declined to comment. The crackdown on Silk Road is the latest in a series of moves by law enforcement against digital currencies, which critics say are a magnet for drug transac-

tions, money-laundering and other illegal activities. "Silk Road has emerged as the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet today," FBI agent Christopher Tarbell said in the criminal complaint. Based on court documents filed since the arrest, Silk Road named for the ancient trade routes between China and the West - offered a wide array of wares. Customers could buy a gram of cocaine for 0.8956 bitcoin, or about $127 at an exchange rate of $142 per bitcoin. That exchange rate fell to as low as $110 per bitcoin on Tuesday, after the Silk Road bust was announced. A half pound of "hydroponic bud" was running about 17.2 bitcoins and 25 LSD blotters were on offer for 1.48 bitcoins, according to court filings that included screen shots of the product listings. Vendors showed photos of crushed white powder, marijuana, pills and other illicit-looking substances. The website included nearly 13,000 listings for controlled substances as of September 23,

Best stuff I've seen in a while," one user reported, according to the documents, saying he received a shipment of heroin overnight from a dealer known as "gotsitall 5.0." Gotsitall 5.0 charged an extra $12 to insure his product, which he described as "high quality #4 heroin all rock," according to the documents. Another vendor offered the services of "hitmen" operating in more than 10 countries, according to the FBI. Tarbell said in the complaint that buyers could also purchase firearms and the services of hackers

offering to break into ATMs and social networking accounts on Facebook or Twitter. They also sold computer viruses that could be used to attack personal computers, as well as access to compromised accounts on online services such as Amazon.com Inc and Netflix Inc, he said. CAUGHT IN A LIBRARY The end for Silk Road came in the small Glen Park branch of the San Francisco public library system on Tuesday afternoon. At least six plainclothes FBI agents seized Ulbricht as he lingered at a corner table on the second floor near the science fiction section, pressing him up against a window and announcing he was under arrest, a library spokeswoman said. A Silk Road wiki had offered advice on how to avoid getting caught by authorities. A seller's guide advised sellers to vacuum seal packages containing narcotics to avoid detection by dogs or electronic sniffers, according to the complaint. The court documents allege that altogether bitcoins worth some $1.2 billion changed hands through the Silk Road

site, which charged commissions of between 8 and 15 percent before it was shut down after a 2 1/2-year run. Silk Road processed all transactions with bitcoin, which leaves no traditional money trail for investigators to follow. The site also routed traffic through a no-cost, anti-surveillance service known as the Tor network. Tor sends traffic through multiple virtual "tunnels" and relays in a bid to keep Web users' identities secret. It also provides "hidden services" to help websites keep the locations of their servers confidential by routing traffic to them from other locations. Tor, which was originally developed with a seed grant from the US Naval Research Laboratory, is an open source project backed by people who say they are concerned about internet surveillance. It is accessible to anybody, including criminals. The complaint describes some of the steps by which investigators came to the conclusion that Ulbricht was the owner of the site, known online as "Dread Pirate Roberts."

n the wake of PETA’s ninemonth investigation of 16 circuses across the country that revealed the rampant abuse of animals, PETA and The Body Shop employees called on the Ministry of Environment and Forests to ban the use of animals in circuses and allow only willing human performers. Countries that have enacted a ban include Bolivia, Greece, Cyprus and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The protest that marked World animal Day (Oct 4th) was held at the amphitheatre, Bandra (West), Mumbai. "The Body Shop has always refused to test products on animals. When we learned from PETA that animals in circuses are chained, beaten and denied everything that's natural and important to them – all for a lifetime of cheap tricks — we knew we had to act,” says The Body Shop’s Prakash Kamat. “It’s time that the government banned the archaic use of animals in circuses, and parents should know that if their kids love animals, the last place they should take them to is the circus,” he added. The investigation included inspections of the Amar Circus, the Gemini Circus, the Great Bombay Circus, the Great Champion Circus, the Great Golden Circus, the Jamuna Circus, the Jumbo Circus (Unit 1), the Jumbo Circus (Unit 2), the Kohinoor Circus, the Metro Circus, the Moonlight Circus, the Rajkamal Circus, the Rambo

“..h

ere we are, in England, and we’re different, and there we are in Sri Lanka, and we’re different. Nowhere is home, nowhere! I want to feel I belong. I want to feel.” Homesick is set in the 1980s. It opens with a party, a gathering of repressed memories and current struggles. The protagonists, Victor and his wife Nandini, their children are celebrating New Year’s Eve with their friends; mostly immigrants from Sri Lanka like themselves. As children run around the house, the guests spill onto the lawn.

Here the reader gets a glimpse of the many characters that will populate the novel and of the relationships that tie them all together. The narrative bounces back and forth among these characters, sharing their eternal struggle to belong in a country that is at best ambivalent about immigrants and their attempts to form a sense of identity that encompasses disparate cultures. Homesick is not a seamless narrative but a collection of loosely related stories. The characters are fleetingly introduced at the beginning of the book, forgotten, and then reintroduced later, making it hard to keep track of their relationships to the events and to each other. Children of destiny, Preethi

and Rohan grow older in the shadow of their parents; their journey has become part of family mythology. Preethi by the end of the story is older and wiser and comes into her own. Meanwhile, Rohan, a doctor by profession, has taken the road less travelled in America and bears the necessary consequences. These interlinked stories weave a rich antiquity of Sri Lankan migrants and their refugee experience in Britain. Issues of racism, teenage woes, awareness of sexuality and class distinction among others are tackled and dealt with throughout the book. Fernando’s sleek word choice and phrasing drive this novel, though her complex literary mosaic of human long-

ing is slightly confusing. More importantly, it grants an achingly blue glimpse of how the experience of cultural displacement can lead to feelings of non-being and perpetual agony among individuals and how it reflects in the well-being of the entire family as the incipient burden of racism bears down in myriad ways. The book ends with a funeral for which the family travel to their native Sri Lanka, and then are back again to where they belong — London, here all the characters assemble again, i.e. those who could survive without going under. The characters eventually come to the realisation and understanding that neither London nor Sri Lanka is their home; this group of people,

nyone who has grown up reading Saki (Hector Hugh Munro), Roald Dahl, and Edgar Allan Poe will attest to the power of the short story; its innate ability to take the reader on a shot but tumultuous rollercoaster ride that leaves one breathless, afraid, but strangely invigorated and wanting more. Unnatural Creatures is a collection of short stories on the

right side of eerie, but more importantly it is a collection of short stories chosen by the fantastical genius Neil Gaiman. All the stories focus on beasts from the recesses of our imaginations, from werewolves and griffins, to the Phoenix and the manticore, and all of them have one thing in common: whether their protagonists are evil or ambivalent, their effect on our psyches is the same. While many of the stories don’t have the macabre depth of Poe, they are a brilliant introduction to those who have spent too long outside the creepy shortstory genre. Though few of these

stories are downright frightening, all of them leave the reader with varying levels of unease. From the first story, Chang Wilson’s untitled ‘blob’ story, the reader is sent on a journey across the world, a trip that navigates the monsters under the bed, but with literary aplomb. Gaiman’s own contribution, Sunbird, is among the best stories in this book, but E Lily Yu’s The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees and Frank R Stockton’s The Griffin and the Minor Cannon are both sturdy epitomes of the genre. But the real triumph is Saki’s GabrielErnest, a spellbinding and chill-

ing tale of a werewolf, that shines a light on why he is a master of the genre. Above all, Gaiman knows what it is that makes a reader tick, whether they are 13 years old or 60, the imagination, he knows, does not age, it just nourishes itself from larger stores of knowledge, becoming more potent with age, even as memories begin to fade. This compilation may not move the hardened hearts of avid short-story readers, but to the genre novice it is a masterclass in why 25 pages is sometimes all it takes to make a story shine and live with you forever.

The aesthetics of ambition

A six-year old Priyanka Shalini Damaraju watched her father acquire antique pieces from all over the world and today, the commercial pilotturned-furniture maker, has found a way to pay ode to her father’s love of the arcadian SANA MIRZA

sana.m@postnoon.com Tell us a little bit about yourself. I come from a middle class Telugu Brahmin background and I finished my education from Nasr School, after which I went on to complete my Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University. During my school days, I was a sports enthusiast and always had an eye for good design. After I completed my engineering in electronics and communication I worked in HSBC for six months. I was always creative in thought but never actually put it to good use until I finished my commercial pilot training. Since I come from a Telugu Brahmin family, my grandmother saw to it that I was trained in classical singing and Bharatnatyam.

You are a certified, commercial pilot. Why did you

decide to venture into furniture making? I was first introduced to furniture, along with various other interests, by my father who was a collector of sorts — everything from antique furniture to lamps and vintage bikes. From Himalayan rallies to painting oil lamps, he did everything. Having spent time assisting him I have not only imbibed his interests but also realised that one must conquer one’s fears. As a child I was extremely hydrophobic and acrophobic. My mother, who has now been with Air India for 30 years, was the first one to introduce me to airplanes. After I got my licence in the USA I came back to India and found that the economy had crashed and pilots were looking for other means of gainful employment. It was only inevitable that I ended up doing what I loved. Hence, after the first wine rack, there was no looking back.

My sense of design aesthetics mirrors the Scandinavian style of furniture making – simple and functional without losing its individuality. Priyanka Shalini Damaraju approach I take.

How much time do you take to make a piece? My work is handmade. So, it is time intensive and varies from article to article.

What comes first, the design or materials? If I am refurbishing a piece of furniture then there is no question of materials. If I make a new piece then the design comes first. However, having said that, the budget of a paying client really decides what

What part of the process excites you the most? Oh, the entire process! Right from the beginning. To see an idea take shape is very satisfying.

From all your pieces, which one is your favorite and why? My favourite piece is the first one I ever made: a wine rack that took me a long time to design and proved to be an invaluable lesson in the end. It was clean, contemporary and above all, easily dismantled!

What do you enjoy doing apart from designing and making furniture? I have a long list of interests but right now I am training to be an internationally certified yoga instructor. I love listening to instrumental music and I had started learning how to play the violin. Hopefully, I can get back to it soon.

RELATIONSHIPS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2013

I AM ALL EARS

I

am 24 years of age. I was in a relationship with a guy for a year after which he broke it off. I still really like him and he knows it. Every once in a while he comes back into my life only to leave me broken after a week or two. What should I do? How do I get over him?

Dear broken-hearted, This guy is playing with your heart. He takes you for granted: he comes into your life and leaves at his will because he knows you will allow it. This is not the time for weakness, but resolve and strength. You need to decide that your heart is not his toy. Go out, hang out with your friends, busy yourself with something, but on no account let him do this to you again. A busy bee has no time for sorrow, you see.

N

ew research by Albright College associate professor of psychology Susan Hughes, Ph.D., has found that men and women alter their voices when speaking to lovers versus friends and that such variations can potentially be used to detect infidelity. The study looked at how individuals alter their voices, or engage in voice modulation.

The Racialicious Love Inter-racial relationships, as normal as they are, are still frowned upon even though we are surrounded by them. We look at the growing trend

few years back, our society was divided by caste, creed, religion, race and ethnicity. But as the years have progressed and with love being blind and everything beautiful, the barriers are slowly being wiped away with constant exposure to a plethora of cultures and peoples. Inter caste and inter religion relationships/marriages have now become somewhat a common aspect. It used to be more a thing of the west but Indian society too has become accepting of this growing change. But what about inter racial marriages; is it a growing trend in India? Now, a common pattern that

follows, in India at least is the fact that there are so many Indian students flying abroad for higher studies, and in all the surprising possibilities that exist with college/university life, they are bound to find their soul mate overseas. Imagine the look on a dad’s face when he finds his son returning home, hand in hand with an American girl. We have seen that happen countless number of times, on TV, in films or otherwise. Among all the questions that pop up in his head, the first one would definitely be “What would society think”? Well truth be told, currently the society has a lot of other issues to deal with than wonder who their neighbour’s son is married to. Inter racial relationships are a growing trend in India and

that too at an increasing rate. Julian D’cruz, an Indian student studying in Australia for the past 3 years, has been in a relationship with his best friend and classmate, a girl of Chinese descent. According to Julian, “My parents have met her every

time they have flown in to Australia to meet me and they are completely fine with our relationship.” When asked if they see a potential future together, he replied, “I don’t know what will happen to me tomorrow. The

future is very unpredictable, but right now yes, I’m in love with her and cannot imagine my life without her.” There have also been relationships that haven’t worked out and couples chose to go their separate ways, but compared to relationships in India, the breakups have been amicable and both partners have no bitterness for each other whatsoever. It’s as though the relationship has mustered some sense of maturity in both the partners. Inter racial relationships have their pros and cons. While you get to celebrate a vivid range of festivals and fusion of cultures, you may also have an unhappy aunt grumbling in the corner. At the end of the day, what’s important is that you are happy and ergo your parents are happy.

VIDYA BALAN ANIMATED F ilmmakers have always been fascinated with stories related to religious mythology, especially Mahabharat. Many a movies, series and animated series have been visualised, based on this. Now, it’s producer Jayantilal Gada, MD, Pen India Pvt Ltd who will try his luck at animating the holy scripture. It has been reported that Gada’s Mahabharat will be released alongside Hrithik Roshan’s, Krrish 3 and will include the voices of 15 Bollywood stars,

Recreating old songs Har Kisi ko Nahin Milta from Akshay Kumar’s new action comedy, Boss. Nikhil D’ Souza sounds extremely uninterested, just like actors Aditi Rao Hydari and newbie Shiv Pandit. The only good thing about the song is Hydari in a bikini. We wonder if the music composers even heard the original song from Jaanbaaz which had Sridevi and Feroz Khan.

Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor go separate ways

B

-town newbies Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt who made successful debuts last year were in the news recently. Looks like the youngsters were quite fond of each other and went out for a while. The Kapoor boy was so taken by the Bhatt girl that he grew extremely possessive and overbearing. No relationship can survive if one of the partners makes it suffocating and that is what happened with the new couple too. If birds are to be believed, Alia and Arjun are on a break but other sources say that Alia has left Arjun and gone back to her ex.

ooks like filmmakers these days are low in coming up with something creative and original. As if film remakes weren’t enough, music composers have started recreating old songs like Tayyab Ali which was picturised on Imran Khan from Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara and Bachna Ae Haseeno with Ranbir Kapoor pulling a Papa Kapoor. Sadly, none of the new creations are as soothing or melodious like their originals. The latest song to join the list is

right from Amitabh Bachchan as Bheeshma, Vidya Balan as Draupadi, Sunny Deol as Bheem, Jackie Shroff as Duryodhan, and Anil Kapoor as Karna. Gada is especially excited about roping in the Kahaani star. All Vidya had to do was say yes and soon after an animated version of her character was enhanced and worked upon in order to make it look closest to Vidya Balan. This sounds really exciting. We can’t wait to see what these characters will look like on screen.

SUDOKU

THOUGHT OF THE DAY Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know. – Cullen Hightower

KAKURO

How to play kakuro

SCRIBBLING PAD

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Vettel takes pole in Korea

YEONGAM: Runaway champi-

onship leader Sebastian Vettel grabbed pole position on Saturday for the Korean Grand Prix, ahead of Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. Vettel's Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber was third-fastest in qualifying but a 10-place grid penalty from the previous race relegates him to 13th. Earlier, Vettel fired an ominous warning of intent as he shot his way to the fastest time in final practice. The runaway leader in the drivers’ championship pipped estranged team-mate Mark Webber to the quickest time by 0.137sec with his 1min 37.881sec lap at a sunny Yeongam. The Red Bull pair were followed by Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, who dominated the two practice sessions on Friday. There was a hairy moment for Vettel, who is 60 points clear in the title race, in the final quarter of the session when he ran wide at turn 13 and picked up dust as he pushed too hard. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was fifth-fastest, followed by Romain Grosjean for Lotus and Alonso’s AFP team-mate Felipe Massa.

Red flag robs Karthikeyan off fifth straight pole BRNO (CZECH REPUBLIC): An untimely red flag thwarted Narain Karthikeyan’s title charge after he qualified third at the season finale of the 2013 Auto GP World Series at the Brno circuit here Friday. US take slim lead At sunset, the United States led the Internationals 4 1/2-3 1/2 with each team ahead in two of the matches that will be finished Saturday morning.

COLUMBUS: Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els each sparked triumphs Friday at the storm-hit Presidents Cup but four matches were suspended by darkness as the potential for a Monday finish loomed. At sunset, the United States led the Internationals 4 1/2-3 1/2 with each team ahead in two of the matches that will be finished Saturday morning before the start of five four-ball and five foursomes matches at Muirfield Village. Reigning British Open champion Mickelson, a five-time major winner, and Keegan Bradley, the 2011 PGA Championship winner, defeated Australian Jason Day and Canada’s Graham DeLaet 4 and 3. “We played some of our best golf on the front nine,” said Mickelson. “I love the energy, the excitement, the quirkiness he brings. We enjoy playing together. He brings out the best in me.” But the Internationals answered when South Africa’s Els and Zimbabwe’s Brendon de Jonge beat Hunter Mahan and Bill Haas 4 and 3. “We both played well,” Els said. “We had a lot of looks at birdies. We were 7under when we finished. That’s going to win most matches.” A severe thunderstorm dumped nearly an inch of rain on the course in about 90 minutes and halted play for two hours and 36 minutes, ensuring not all would finish. “Everyone is sort of getting tired now,” said Internationals captain Nick Price. “It’s just the mental impact of sitting there, drying everything off and going back out to a wet course.” An 80 percent chance of thunderstorms is forecast on Sunday, when 12 final singles

Phil Mickelson (R) and Keegan Bradley of the U.S. Team celebrate after winning the 12th hole during the Day Two Foursome Matches at the Muirfield Village Golf Club on Friday, Ohio. AFP/GREGORY SHAMUS matches are planned. “Monday is a consideration,” said event director Steve Carman. “It’s our intent to try and avoid that.” The Americans lead the biennial rivalry 7-1-1 after winning the past four in a row. The Internationals have not won an alternate-shot session since 2005, dropping seven in a row to the Americans. World number one Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar were 3up over South Africans Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen after 12 holes while Steve Stricker and Jordan Spieth led South Africans Richard Sterne and Branden Grace 3-up with four holes to play. World number two Adam Scott, the reigning Masters champion from Australia, and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama led

In the US win, Day sank a 12-foot birdie putt to win the first hole and only 15-foot putts by Bradley at the second and

fourth to halve the holes kept the US duo close. “They gave me more of a burst of energy watching them as if I had made them,” Mickelson said. “That’s when we really got going.” Mickelson responded with a 17-foot eagle putt to win the par-5 fifth, then hit an approach inches from the hole to set up a birdie to take the sixth. Birdies at seven and eight stretched the US lead and just after play resumed, Day missed a par putt at 10 to fall 4-down. Bradley sank birdie putts at 11 and 12. Bradley missed a 3-foot par putt to lose the 13th and his poor tee shot led to a bogey to drop the 14th, but Bradley sank a birdie putt at the par-5 15th to halve the hole and win the AFP match.

test finish appeared to be in store for the Presidents Cup as officials try to conclude the storm-hit golf matches by the weekend despite bleak weather forecasts. The United States lead the Internationals 4 1/2-3 1/2 with four alternate-shot matches to be completed Saturday morning, the Americans and global stars each leading in two of the unfinished matches at Muirfield Village. Storms halted play each of the first two days and threaten again Saturday, when officials hope to play 10 scheduled matches, five each in four-ball and alternate-shot, after finishing the incomplete matches. “It makes for some long days,” Price said. “Everybody is sort of getting tired now. It doesn’t matter how fit you are.” The worst could be yet to come. At least four players for each team will be looking at more than 36 holes Saturday if weather allows. Some could face as many as 43 holes. And that’s with each team having to rest four players in the second wave of pairs matches. “It’s almost like a major-type thing,” said US captain Fred Couples. “The better players will be able to handle it and go.” While Saturday’s forecast is 50-50, there is an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms on Sunday, so officials are looking at a morning start to the 12 concluding singles matches rather than the planned afternoon start.

Djokovic hails Gasquet ahead of crunch match BEIJING: World number one Novak Djokovic paid tribute to France’s Richard Gasquet Friday, saying he was playing “the tennis of his life” ahead of their semi-final match at the China Open. The Serb has lost to the world number ten only once in their previous ten meetings, and Gasquet will face a stern test in Beijing, where Djokovic has an unbeaten run stretching back to 2009. But Gasquet heads into the game after a confidenceboosting straight-sets victory over world number four David Ferrer. “He’s an established top ten player now. He was always one of the most

talented players in our generation,” Djokovic said, after his crushing 6-1, 6-2 quarterfinal victory over American Sam Querrey. “I think in the last two years he’s playing the tennis of his life. In terms of consistency, he’s up there.” The pair meet at Beijing’s National Tennis Centre during the evening session on Saturday for a place in the final against either Rafael Nadal or Tomas Berdych. Djokovic’s top spot in the world rankings is under threat in Beijing as second seed Nadal only has to reach the final to unseat him. If he defeats Berdych,

Nadal would become the new number one even if Djokovic reclaims the title he won last year with victory over JoWilfried Tsonga. Djokovic has won three of the last four China Opens, and did not attend in 2011 due to injury. He is expecting a tough battle against fifth seed Gasquet, who claimed victory over Spain’s Ferrer 6-3, 6-4 in his quarter-final match. “We are expecting a tough match for both of us, there is no question about it,” he said. “I need to be aggressive. I know what I need to do against him and hopefully AFP it’s going to work.”

Afghanistan reach World Cup SHARJAH: Afghanistan reached

the World Cup for the first time on Friday, completing a remarkable journey from refugee camp cricket to rubbing shoulders with the sport’s superpowers. The team who were playing in the fifth-tier just five years ago, and are forced by the precarious security situation in their country to stage home matches in the Gulf, swept past Kenya by seven wickets to secure an historic spot in the 2015 showpiece. After dismissing Kenya for just 93 in the 44th over at the Sharjah Cricket Ground, Afghanistan reached their target in the 21st over when captain Mohammad Nabi hit Shem Ngoche for a boundary through midwicket. They had to endure a brief moment of worry before romping to victory when they were reduced to 34 for 3. But Nabi, who finished on 46 not out, and Hashmatullah Shaidi, put on 62 for the fourth wicket to bring their side home with 175 balls to spare. Nabi smashed two huge sixes and three fours to assure his team of second place in the World Cricket League behind runaway winners Ireland who have also qualified for the World Cup. Afghanistan will play in Pool A at the World Cup in 2015 along with co-hosts Australia and New Zealand as well as

Darren vows stability

SYDNEY: Coach Darren Lehmann has vowed there will be more stability in the Australian team for the return Ashes series after repeated chopping and changing in England without success. Australia used 17 players in the recent Tests against England and, including the matches in India earlier this year, have picked 22 players in

their past nine Tests but failed to win any of them, the Sydney Morning Herald said. Several former players led by Steve Waugh have urged Lehmann to select a team and stick with it to have any chance of putting Australian cricket back on a winning path after their 3-0 defeat against old adversaries England in the five-Test series.

Waugh, who benefited when selectors stuck with him despite a slow start to his international career, says players find it hard to relax and play their natural game with the axe hanging over their heads. Lehmann, who was parachuted into the Australia job just 16 days before the Ashes started after Mickey Arthur was sacked, said he plans more stability. ‘’What we will do is settle the side once the team is announced,’’ he told the Herald. ‘’And we’ll make it perfectly clear where people are batting and we’ll be sticking with that group for a while. ‘’That happens when you’re a coach and you’re not winning -- you’ve got to find out about the players and I certainly found out about a few players. ‘’To be fair, in the one-dayers we’re really settled. That will happen in the Test matches now. I think we’re at the stage now that we know where we’re going and who we want.’’ Lehmann’s appointment as coach in June, immediately after a stint in the IPL, means he has barely had any time off AFP since April.

ish this moment and look forward to playing against the best sides in some of the best playing facilities. “Playing in a World Cup will be one grade up and we’ll try to work hard and do better.” Afghanistan were already overwhelming favourites to beat Kenya in the last match of an

exhausting two-year qualifying competition. In Monday’s Twenty20 international, they routed the African side by 106 runs and carried that form through to Wednesday when they romped to victory by eight wickets in the first of the two determining ODIs. Then, Kenya were dismissed for just 89 with Afghanistan reaching their target inside 18 overs. On Friday, Kenya, who gave a debut to 15-year-old opener Gurdeep Singh, were put into bat and struggled again with Morris Ouma top-scoring with 39. Rakep Patel, with 18, was the only other batsman to reach double figures in an innings where the first boundary didn’t arrive until the 16th over. Slow left-armer Hamza Hotak was the leading Afghanistan bowler, claiming 319 off his 10 overs. “This is the best day of my coaching career,” said Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan, a former AFP Pakistan Test player.

Rajasthan tame Chennai JAIPUR: Rajasthan Royals outplayed the formidable Chennai Super Kings to reach their maiden Champions League Twetny20 final at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium here Friday. Opener Ajinkya Rahane (70 off 56 balls) and Shane Watson (32 0ff 23) steered Rajasthan to 159 for eight in 20 overs. Chennai kept on losing wickets through their innings and fell short of the target by 14 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin (46) and Chris Morris (26) shared a blistering 73 run stand for the eighth wicket but that did not prove to be enough. Leg-spinner

Pravin Tambe again came to Rajasthan’s rescue, ending with figures of three for 10 and helping his team extend its winning run at home to 13 matches. The 41-year-old has now taken 10 wickets in four matches. Rajasthan face either Mumbai Indians or Trinidad and Tobago in the final in Delhi Sunday. The second semifinal between Mumbai and Trinidad takes also takes place the Ferozeshah Kotla Saturday. Brief scores: Rajasthan 159/8 in 20 overs (Rahane 70, Bravo 3/26), Chennai 145/8 in 20 overs IANS (Ashwin 46, Tambe 3/10).

Mata demands awayday success at Norwich Juan Mata is confident that the Stamford Bridge club will face Chris Hughton’s side in a buoyant mood after drawing a line under an alarming early season dip. Ian WINROW

LONDON: Juan Mata (in pic) believes Chelsea must quickly secure a first away win of the Premier League season if they are to kick-start their title challenge. A trip to Carrow Road to face Norwich City on Sunday presents Jose Mourinho’s side with the latest opportunity to claim three points on the road. And Mata — back in the side after falling out of favour — is confident the Stamford Bridge club will face Chris Hughton’s side in buoyant mood after drawing a line under an alarming early season dip. Successive defeats to Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup, Everton in the Premier League and Basel in the Champions League came as a

shock to Mourinho’s squad. But after getting their league form back on track with a victory over Fulham and hard-fought draw at Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea delivered an impressive display at Steaua Bucharest to ignite their European campaign. “I think we’re in a good moment after the last three games,” said Matta. “We won two of them and drew against Tottenham after playing really well in the second half, so now we have to keep going and build on that before the international break. “We need our first away league win as soon as possible. If we want to fight for the title you need to win your home games but also pick points up away as well. “Obviously when you play away it’s difficult, especially against teams like Norwich who

are very good at home, but we’re good enough to do it.” Mourinho’s decision to drop Mata raised eyebrows but the Spain playmaker’s response has been to force a u-turn and also earned a recall into his national squad. “I’m happy with how I played in the last three games and I’m happy with how the team played,” said Mata. “I’m really pleased to be back in the Spain squad and, obviously with the national team, my target is to play in the World Cup.” Samuel Eto’o will lead the Chelsea attack at Norwich in place of Fernando Torres who is suspended after being sent off last week and Mourinho acknowledges a victory immediately ahead of the international break will hand his side a timely lift.

“We have a lot to improve and work to do. We will have ups and downs, that’s normal with this profile of squad. I’m ready for that,” said Mourinho. “But after defeats we won against Fulham and had a fantastic second half at Spurs. We solved the situation under pressure in Romania. If we do our job then have 15 days to reflect and prepare for the future.” Norwich claimed only their second league win of the season last time out when they collected all three points at Stoke City. The visit of Chelsea presents a daunting challenge but City’s record at Carrow Road last season, when they beat Manchester United and Arsenal, will give Hughton’s side hope. “We will be underdogs and most people would expect them AFP to win,” said Hughton.

Moyes backs United Wenger wary

of West Brom

Steven GRIFFITHS

LONDON: David Moyes insists he isn’t worried about Manchester United’s frustrating start to the season hitting a new low at Sunderland on Saturday. Under-fire boss Moyes has endured a bumpy beginning to his first season at Old Trafford, with United slumping to 12th in the Premier League table after their worst start since 1989. Defeats at bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in the league had alarm bells ringing among United fans concerned Moyes won’t be able to emulate Alex Ferguson’s glorious reign, and last weekend’s 2-1 home loss against West Bromwich Albion sparked a rare chorus of disapproval from the Old Trafford crowd. United’s 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday was a creditable result in the circumstances. But a loss at Sunderland, who sit bottom of the table without a manager after Paolo Di Canio’s sacking and still waiting for their first win of the season, would hand United a third successive league defeat for the first time since December 2001.

Former Everton boss Moyes admits he has found it hard to get used to the intense scrutiny of life at United, but he has no doubts he and his team can cope with the pressure. “It has surprised me a little bit, but if you lose a couple of games you are going to AFP get talked about,” Moyes said.

LONDON: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is expecting a stern challenge for his Premier League leaders when they travel to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. The Gunners will be bidding for an 11th straight win in all competitions when they arrive at The Hawthorns. But that sequence includes a League Cup victory against the Baggies where it needed a penalty shoot-out to separate the sides. West Brom caused one of the upsets of the season so far when they won 2-1 away to champions Manchester United last weekend. “They had quite a strong side out (in the League Cup) and many of the regular players played, but they have a big squad,” Wenger said. “I noticed when I looked at their team who played at Manchester United, that they have a massive squad of

experienced players, so it’s very difficult to predict who will play against us.” Meanwhile Wenger felt compelled to admonish Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere after the England midfielder was spotting holding a cigarette outside a London nightclub in midweek — although the player himself insisted this was a “prank” and that he wasn’t a smoker. Wilshere came on as a substitute in Arsenal’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Napoli on Tuesday and Wenger

gave his players permission to enjoy themselves the next day. But Wenger was unimpressed with Wilshere’s conduct, saying: “I disagree completely with that behaviour. There are two things: first of all when you are a football player you are an example, and as well you don’t do what damages your health. “Things are different in England especially,” the Frenchman added. “You don’t need to convince me (of that) because, I must tell you, I travelled as a football player on coaches after games in France where you didn’t see each other, there was so much smoke on the coach! “Everybody smoked. But times have changed and the health worry, the example, the role model (expected) from the football players has changed as AFP well.”
