HYDERABAD: Is Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy acting on the directions of party high command which has decided to go ahead with the process of creation of separate Telangana state? If Friday’s political developments are anything to go by, it becomes evident that the CM was indeed discharging his duties assigned to him by the party high command. The CM not only successfully convinced his party colleagues, especially cabinet ministers and MLAs not to quit from their posts but also the administration. This move was taken to ensure that the law and order situation did not go down following the approval of Telangana, a note by the union cabinet in Seemandhra region. The woman said she managed to escape and went straight to the police station where she registered a case. It is alleged that in spite of him receiving dowry from his wife’s family, the accused, a chronic alcoholic, wanted more. According to the investigating officers Fasiuddin had harassed his wife on this matter over the last few years and was demanding more dowry from her parents. It is alleged that he physically abused her while drunk and was known to have a slew of extra-marital affairs. On the night of October 1, the accused came home in an inebriated condition and proceeded to beat his wife. She suffered fatal injuries when he attacked her with a large stone. Her screams forced her daughter awake. The accused then swiftly fled the scene, while the daughter rushed to the neighbours to inform them of what had happened.

Four militants have been killed in the operation,” a defence spokesman said. Six AK rifles were recovered from the spot, the spokesman said. Intermittent exchange of fire between ultras and troops was going on in the sector where the operation against the infiltrating militants entered the 12th day on Saturday. A group of heavily-armed militants had tried to infiltrate into Kashmir through Keran sector on September 24 but were intercepted IANS by the Army.

250-year-old temple reconstructed

CHEUNI (HIMACHAL PRADESH):

An over 250-year-old prominent Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Hadimba in this village in the picturesque Seraj Valley in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh has been reconstructed. The new temple, a replication of the one that stood at the site earlier, will be reopened for the public Saturday, the first day of the auspicious “navratras”, temple officials said. The old temple was demolished after the wood used in its construction had decayed. “The temple of Hadimba Devi, the prominent deity of the Seraj Valley, has been rebuilt in typical hill architecture,” temple trust chairman Rudramani told IANS. He said the temple, which was restored at a cost of over Rs.1 crore, was reconstructed in one and a half years at its original site after the old temple was demolished. “The new one is an exact replica of the original one,” Rudramani said. The temple, located amidst forests of deodar in Saraho village in Cheuni panchayat, is some 90 km from Mandi town and 250 km from the state capital Shimla.

Patnaik not okay with Modi

Another temple trustee Fateh Singh said the logs and bricks were removed from the original structure and documented. The new ones were placed at the same place and location to maintain the original architecture. A few deodar logs in the demolished structure had inscriptions of 1855, which indicated that the temple was last reconstructed in that year, temple officials said. “New logs have replaced decayed ones. Special emphasis was on carving work. For this, special craftsmen were hired. The stonework on the outer walls has been done as per the old style,” he said.

He described what the groom and bride were wearing and how the friends and relatives were dancing away. The bed-ridden man didn’t hear any music or band playing but he listened and enjoyed the

Once there, he slowly propped himself up on the bed and looked out the window hoping to see the lake and the park. All he saw was a blank wall. He was confused. When the nurse came in, he told the nurse how his friend had described many beautiful things from the window but all he sees now is a wall. The nurse said that the man’s friend was blind. He was shocked and thought about it. It then occurred to him that his friend was all along saying those wonderful things and painting those visual images to get away from his own grief and to also take his friend along on the journey. He moved beyond his visual impairment to see life and all its colours anyway. He also did that to encourage his friend and to tell him that life is beautiful and he must get well soon in order to enjoy it.

But Jerome and Marylin said they see major problems with organic food, too, including the demanding system for getting products certified. SAINT-DIE-DES-VOSGES: Like many in food-loving France, Jerome and Marylin are serious about what goes on their plates — enough to quit the city, tired of factory-farmed goods and pricey organic foods, and return to the self-sufficient farming of bygone days. Despite having no rural background, they bought an old farm deep in the countryside of northeastern France and launched a new life as small-scale farmers in May 2012. Since then, they have reclaimed a progressively larger share of the food they and their two sons eat, producing it themselves instead of buying it at the store. “This year, we started a vegetable garden and bought our first animals -- two pigs, three goats and some rabbits,” said Marylin, 37. Their hillside farm sits at the end of a dirt road near the village of Saint-Die-Des-Vosges -- a big old house surrounded by trees where apples, pears, cher-

ries, plums and walnuts grow. Countries that have enacted a ban include Bolivia, Greece, Cyprus and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The protest that marked World animal Day (Oct 4th) was held at the amphitheatre, Bandra (West), Mumbai. "The Body Shop has always refused to test products on animals. It opens with a party, a gathering of repressed memories and current struggles. The protagonists, Victor and his wife Nandini, their children are celebrating New Year’s Eve with their friends; mostly immigrants from Sri Lanka like themselves. As children run around the house, the guests spill onto the lawn.

Here the reader gets a glimpse of the many characters that will populate the novel and of the relationships that tie them all together. The narrative bounces back and forth among these characters, sharing their eternal struggle to belong in a country that is at best ambivalent about immigrants and their attempts to form a sense of identity that encompasses disparate cultures. Homesick is not a seamless narrative but a collection of loosely related stories. The characters are fleetingly introduced at the beginning of the book, forgotten, and then reintroduced later, making it hard to keep track of their relationships to the events and to each other. Children of destiny, Preethi

and Rohan grow older in the shadow of their parents; their journey has become part of family mythology. Preethi by the end of the story is older and wiser and comes into her own. Meanwhile, Rohan, a doctor by profession, has taken the road less travelled in America and bears the necessary consequences. These interlinked stories weave a rich antiquity of Sri Lankan migrants and their refugee experience in Britain. Issues of racism, teenage woes, awareness of sexuality and class distinction among others are tackled and dealt with throughout the book. nyone who has grown up reading Saki (Hector Hugh Munro), Roald Dahl, and Edgar Allan Poe will attest to the power of the short story; its innate ability to take the reader on a shot but tumultuous rollercoaster ride that leaves one breathless, afraid, but strangely invigorated and wanting more. Unnatural Creatures is a collection of short stories on the

right side of eerie, but more importantly it is a collection of short stories chosen by the fantastical genius Neil Gaiman. All the stories focus on beasts from the recesses of our imaginations, from werewolves and griffins, to the Phoenix and the manticore, and all of them have one thing in common: whether their protagonists are evil or ambivalent, their effect on our psyches is the same. While many of the stories don’t have the macabre depth of Poe, they are a brilliant introduction to those who have spent too long outside the creepy shortstory genre. Though few of these

stories are downright frightening, all of them leave the reader with varying levels of unease. From the first story, Chang Wilson’s untitled ‘blob’ story, the reader is sent on a journey across the world, a trip that navigates the monsters under the bed, but with literary aplomb. Gaiman’s own contribution, Sunbird, is among the best stories in this book, but E Lily Yu’s The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees and Frank R Stockton’s The Griffin and the Minor Cannon are both sturdy epitomes of the genre. But the real triumph is Saki’s GabrielErnest, a spellbinding and chill-

ing tale of a werewolf, that shines a light on why he is a master of the genre. Above all, Gaiman knows what it is that makes a reader tick, whether they are 13 years old or 60, the imagination, he knows, does not age, it just nourishes itself from larger stores of knowledge, becoming more potent with age, even as memories begin to fade. This compilation may not move the hardened hearts of avid short-story readers, but to the genre novice it is a masterclass in why 25 pages is sometimes all it takes to make a story shine and live with you forever.

I come from a middle class Telugu Brahmin background and I finished my education from Nasr School, after which I went on to complete my Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University. During my school days, I was a sports enthusiast and always had an eye for good design. After I completed my engineering in electronics and communication I worked in HSBC for six months. I was always creative in thought but never actually put it to good use until I finished my commercial pilot training. Since I come from a Telugu Brahmin family, my grandmother saw to it that I was trained in classical singing and Bharatnatyam.

You are a certified, commercial pilot. Why did you

decide to venture into furniture making? I was first introduced to furniture, along with various other interests, by my father who was a collector of sorts — everything from antique furniture to lamps and vintage bikes. From Himalayan rallies to painting oil lamps, he did everything. Having spent time assisting him I have not only imbibed his interests but also realised that one must conquer one’s fears. As a child I was extremely hydrophobic and acrophobic. My mother, who has now been with Air India for 30 years, was the first one to introduce me to airplanes. After I got my licence in the USA I came back to India and found that the economy had crashed and pilots were looking for other means of gainful employment. It was only inevitable that I ended up doing what I loved. Hence, after the first wine rack, there was no looking back.

From all your pieces, which one is your favorite and why? My favourite piece is the first one I ever made: a wine rack that took me a long time to design and proved to be an invaluable lesson in the end. It was clean, contemporary and above all, easily dismantled!

What do you enjoy doing apart from designing and making furniture? I have a long list of interests but right now I am training to be an internationally certified yoga instructor. I love listening to instrumental music and I had started learning how to play the violin. Hopefully, I can get back to it soon.

Inter caste and inter religion relationships/marriages have now become somewhat a common aspect. It used to be more a thing of the west but Indian society too has become accepting of this growing change. But what about inter racial marriages; is it a growing trend in India? Now, a common pattern that

follows, in India at least is the fact that there are so many Indian students flying abroad for higher studies, and in all the surprising possibilities that exist with college/university life, they are bound to find their soul mate overseas. Imagine the look on a dad’s face when he finds his son returning home, hand in hand with an American girl. We have seen that happen countless number of times, on TV, in films or otherwise. Among all the questions that pop up in his head, the first one would definitely be “What would society think”? Well truth be told, currently the society has a lot of other issues to deal with than wonder who their neighbour’s son is married to. Inter racial relationships are a growing trend in India and

that too at an increasing rate. Julian D’cruz, an Indian student studying in Australia for the past 3 years, has been in a relationship with his best friend and classmate, a girl of Chinese descent. According to Julian, “My parents have met her every

time they have flown in to Australia to meet me and they are completely fine with our relationship.” When asked if they see a potential future together, he replied, “I don’t know what will happen to me tomorrow. The

future is very unpredictable, but right now yes, I’m in love with her and cannot imagine my life without her.” There have also been relationships that haven’t worked out and couples chose to go their separate ways, but compared to relationships in India, the breakups have been amicable and both partners have no bitterness for each other whatsoever. It’s as though the relationship has mustered some sense of maturity in both the partners. Inter racial relationships have their pros and cons. While you get to celebrate a vivid range of festivals and fusion of cultures, you may also have an unhappy aunt grumbling in the corner. At the end of the day, what’s important is that you are happy and ergo your parents are happy.

How to play kakuro

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
