Two women who ran the brothel explain the business equation of flesh trade to the police. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

T

he arithmetic works in the organisers’ favour. Each girl enlisted for flesh trade is paid `10,000 to `15,000 a month and the ‘madams’ make `15-20,000 a day on her, as each customer is charged a minimum `5000 and each girl is supposed to entertain twothree customers a day. The organisers thus make a pile. Part of the proceeds goes to musclemen who protect the brothel and sometimes to the local police. Not all policemen, however, can be bought, and so once in a while, the sex racketeers get caught. Explaining the dynamics of flesh trade, veteran police offi-

cers said prostitution can’t be completely rooted out as long as men are ready to pay for sex. The whole ‘trade secrets’ came out with the arrest of two women who ran a brothel in a rented flat in Padmarao Nagar in Secunderabad. Identified as YB Seeshu Mani, 45, and Swarna Kumari, 24, the women AROUND THE

told the police they made good money from the business and also paid the girls well. The police, apart from arresting the two women, seized some cash and several mobile phones. A customer, Pawan Kumar,

was also detained. According to inspector B Anjaiah, the women had begun flesh trade as Seeshu Mani’s husband, Y Srinivas, remained idle and did not earn for the family. Swarna too joined her as she could not land a job. They belong to Vijayawada. The women told the police that Srinivas went around Rajamundhry, Godavari, Machlipatnam and Vijayawada looking for poor but good looking young women who were eager to start a good life and earn in a city. Police are trying to verify the called numbers from the mobile phones to get an idea of the customers. Several bigwigs are likely to get exposed, police say.

RTI-strong APIIC goes transparent APIIC sets an example by making its works RTI-compliant. N SHIVA KUMAR

P

aving the way for greater public participation, the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), in collaboration with RTI activist Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu, has revamped its website, which it claims is a never-before citizen-friendly portal. As Dubbudu explains, “The idea was to change the impression that the government and public cannot work together. We would like to think of this as one small step towards what we call as an active ‘public-public participation.’” The project began two months ago at APIIC’s invitation. APIIC is equally enthusiastic. “We have realised that to have public participation, we must ensure transparency. This can be done solely through educating our PIOs and assistant PIOs about the RTI Act,” says Jayesh Ranjan, vice chairman and managing director of APIIC. Information available through previous pleas will be put on the website, officials say.

plainants to register their complaints, which will be actively monitored and routed directly to the heads of the zonal offices and to the MD through email and SMS,” says Ranjan. APIIC records show that

first and second appeal rate is only eight per cent.

FUTURE IMPLICATIONS People feel it is time other departments initiated the move. “Involving the public in these activities will ease the burden on the departments. It works well both ways — for the public who can put pressure on the government and for the departments in clearing their works. Other departments like police, land revenue and civil supplies need to come forward; their current disinterest shows that they are not completely honest about their works,” says Raoji Brahmanand, RTI activist.

Forests in the Western Ghats are continuous and spread into the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Animals often move from one region to another in search of food and habitation. “The increase in the tiger numbers has been because of the contiguous nature of forests. Another aspect is the excellent protection given to the wildlife using funds from both the Centre and states,” said Gopinath. IANS

Encroaching nallah a hobby Which leads to flash floods during heavy rains in the City. Corporation comes up against troublesome problem of removing encroachments. MD NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com

NNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) funds meant for the storm water drains continue to be largely underutilized. For instance, the most ambitious JNNURM plan to improve ‘nallahs’ is held down by the cumbersome process of land acquisition and rehabilitation of the affected people. Immediately after the flooding of few localities last year during monsoon the minister for municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) M Maheedar Reddy gave nod improving storm water drains (nallahs). According to estimates, GHMC planned for spending `1,000 crore on rehabilitation and to provide alternative shelter to the people who ‘encroached’ nallah space. aid, made hectic inspections along with the GHMC officials. Later, the date of projections was extended to March 2014. But all his labour seems to be on the verge of collapse as drainage works are not progressing. Hundreds of encroachments are yet to be removed by the GHMC which are hindering the progress of nallah improvement. At one location, 47 encroachments are to be removed from Murki Nallah, which is only 38 per cent completed. Another location it has 730 encroachments that are to be removed, which made only 20 per cent progress. While Kukatpally Nallah, made 60 per cent progress, 72 encroachments are to be removed. The Balkapur channel has made progress of 56 per cent, which needs 453 encroachments to be cleared. The secondary storm water drains, in

zone 1 and 2 has the huge number of encroachers. With 730 encroachments only 20 per cent progress could be made. Under JNNURM, `266.47 crore was approved, but only `122.32 crore were utilized. If the GHMC is not able to avail the funds, it would be lost to it

forever by March next. According to officials, the projects under JNNURM scheme were planned way back in 2005. While most of the projects were completed, improvement of storm water drains is largely affected with land acquisition and rehabilitation.

“That is what we want to achieve in aging research — not only to increase their life span but to increase their health span as well.” Parkin has been previously implicated in the development of Parkinson’s disease. People born with a mutation in the parkin gene are at higher risk for developing early onset symptoms of Parkinson’s, which typically develops in older adults.

Further study may reveal whether humans could experience a similar longevity boost from higher levels of parkin, which marks damaged proteins so that cells can discard them before they become toxic. Parkin is also thought to be instrumental in removing damaged mitochondria from the cells, the research mentions.

He also added that the dominance of YSRC, led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, is likely to become an important aspect during Rahul Gandhi’s meeting in order to select leaders for the next elections. In what could be seen as an attempt to have his own team of leaders before being presented as the prime ministerial candidate, Rahul is keen to see his selections win in AP.

he BJP was today decimated in the Karnataka Assembly elections with Congress set to form a government, may be on its own, wresting power after a gap of seven years. The BJP’s southern fort where it came to power for the first time in 2008 crumbled and the party may be pushed to the third position behind JD(S). Exploiting the split in BJP and the spoiler’s role played by former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, the Congress was ahead in 93 of the 223 constituencies that went to polls and has already won 11 seats. The JD(S) led by H D Deve Gowda won two seats and was ahead in 39 seats while the BJP bagged one and is leading in 35 seats. The fledgling Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) floated by Yeddyurappa after his exit from BJP was leading only in more than ten seats while independents and others were ahead in 15 seats. U

S police descended on an unremarkable home in a working class neighbourhood of Cleveland on Tuesday after three women who had been missing for around a decade were rescued from kidnappers. Three brothers have been arrested in the Midwestern city after one of the captives managed to alert a neighbour, who broke down the door to free her and the six-year-old daughter she apparently bore as a prisoner. Police responding to a desperate 911 emergency call found two more women in the modest detached home with American and Puerto Rican flags on the porch. All had been reported missing in separate incidents around 10 years ago. Journalists and local residents descended on Seymour Avenue, where officers had sealed off the property with barriers and crime scene tape, astonished that anyone could have kept such a crime quiet for so long. T

he heavy-metal-loving governor of Indonesian capital Jakarta has surrendered a guitar that was a gift from US band Metallica to anti-corruption authorities, an official said Tuesday. A beaming Joko Widodo appeared on TV last week strumming the maroon bass guitar gifted to him by Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, which was autographed and bore the words “Giving Back!.. Keep Playin’ That Cool Funky Bass!”. But the powerful Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said that Widodo, widely considered clean in a notoriously graftridden country, had now handed the gift to them. “We will check if there is any conflict of interest or if there was an exchange of favours,” commission spokesman Johan Budi told AFP. “The screening process takes up to 30 days, and after that we will decide whether to return the guitar to him or confiscate it.” During the TV appearance Widodo, an anti-establishment figure who was elected in September, said he was a huge

fan of Metallica, whose hits include Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters. He also listed Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Napalm Death as among his favourite bands. His spokesman Eko Hariadi said the guitar was the first gift Widodo had received since becoming governor, he had handed it over voluntarily to be checked and there was no conflict of interest. “The governor loves rock music. to receive it, it's like getting a tennis racket from Boris Becker,” the spokesman told AFP, referring to the German tennis great. “To him, it was a souvenir and there was no exchange for favours.” Corruption remains rampant in Indonesia, particularly among public servants, and the country last year slid to 118th of 176 countries in Transparency International's annual graft index. With a belief that a teacher’s role extends beyond school, the forum is pushing for ‘non-negotiables’. PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com

P

olicies that were far removed from the practicalities of the classroom lead to the formation of a group that is today known as the Teachers Forum for Child Rights. What started as a handful of like-minded individuals coming together to debate child development, protection and empowerment in 1996 has, 17 years later, transformed into a forum for over 3,000 government teachers in schools across 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh today. With a belief that a teacher’s role extends beyond the school, these members have been campaigning for “non-negotiables”, such as eliminating child labour, corporal punishment, child marriages, among others. “We saw that teachers were being used in State-activities such as surveys and elections but not in any activities furthering the cause of child rights. So we decided to take it upon ourselves to bring attention to the issues that were cropping up in classrooms but ignored in government schemes,” explains N Janardhan, a founding member. Working alongside the department of social welfare, they started their activism with the ‘Back to School’ campaign and soon were tackling issues of out-of-children, over-age children, children with special needs, slum children by working out practical solutions such as alternative schools, rolling admissions, summer schools, bridge courses, teacher to teacher motivation and so on. But the challenge that they still grapple with, then and now, remains the quality of education

in government schools. They disagree with the perception that poor people don’t want to send their children to school. AROUND THE

CITY

“They don’t want to send their children to school because they don’t trust our schooling. Parents who lead a hand-tomouth existence worry that it’s a lose-lose situation if the kids are sent to the local school because neither do they learn anything of value, nor will they learn any livelihood skills. So, if we can change that and provide them some guarantee that their children will learn and benefit from the education we give them, they’ll go to great lengths and make any sacrifices to send them to school,” says Anand Babu, convenor, Prakasam district. Even with massive national initiatives such as the Sarva Shikshya Abhiyan, ICDS, Right to Education, while the numbers

may have improved, the quality of learning still continues to be dismal. The latest Annual Status of Education Report revealed that the learning outcomes of government school children across the nation were on a significant decline. But ignoring the need for community mobilisation and teacher-training programmes, the government has been rolling out policies worth thousands of crores which experts say are more veiled bribes than incentives. Even these have not been implemented and the money is not being spent on real requirements that are most necessary for children and teachers at the district/mandal/village levels. The forum, which has been monitoring micro-level checks and recording data at the village level on its own has enough data to contradict the government’s trickle-down promises. Tatagiri Asheerwadam, a senior member of the forum, said, “If there are buildings, there are no toilets. If there are toilets, there is no one to clean them. If there are cleaners, there’s no running water. When we have that, we don’t have drinking water. How would anyone want to be in an environment like this, let alone come to learn, or to teach?” However, TFCR has a plan. “Instead of spending their time writing/fudging reports like they’re doing now, their spare time should be used for training. But what they need most is to be motivated,” says Asheerwadam, who has just enrolled his own children in a government school. In the end, TFCR’s aim is to return to where they first started, with every child ‘back to school’ and happy.

‘Seismic’ row over dogs

A

Chinese city is using dogs to predict earthquakes, an official said on Tuesday, after state-run media reported that neighbours were complaining of nightly false alarms — in the form of barking. AROUND THE

WORLD

China is regularly hit by seismic tremors. Around 200 people were left dead or missing by a quake in Sichuan province last month, and hundreds of thousands have been killed in major disasters in the past. The earthquake authority of Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi province in the east, keeps dogs

since they will "act abnormally when an earthquake is coming", sometimes up to 10 days in advance, an official surnamed Song told AFP. The bureau used the dogs at the request of the provincial government, he added, saying that chickens and ducks could be effective as well. But neighbours are complaining

on social media about the animals' nightly howling, according to the official provincial news website Dajiang. "The compound of the Nanchang earthquake authority has I don't know how many dogs, every night at 11pm they start barking over and over," it quoted one as saying. Song said the dogs had now been sent to a lower-level earthquake bureau in the city but denied they had been barking. However Dajiang quoted him as saying the dogs could be muzzled to accommodate residents' concerns. Asked if that would stop them carrying out their predictive function, he agreed and said he would ask his boss what to do about that, it reported. AFP

RESTRUCTURING Pressure builds to split JPMorgan top roles

A

leading shareholder advisory group Tuesday urged JPMorgan Chase investors to end chief executive Jamie Dimon’s tenure as chairman and fire a majority of the company’s board after a $6.2 billion trading loss. Glass Lewis became the second major proxy adviser in recent days to endorse splitting the chairman and chief executive roles at JPMorgan in the wake of the bank’s “London whale” derivatives debacle. ISS Proxy Advisory Services called for that action

last week. CalPERS, which manages California government retirees accounts, also said Tuesday that it would vote to split the bank’s chairman and chief executive roles. The pressure came ahead of JPMorgan’s annual meeting May 21 as questions about Dimon’s fate hang over Wall Street. After leading JPMorgan through the 2008 financial crisis in comparatively good shape, Dimon’s star has dimmed after the multi-billion-dollar loss in early 2012 by a London-based unit trading complex derivatives for the bank’s own book. AFP

“Given that the WTO is a ‘one-country-one-vote’ institution, Western supporters figured that a deal endorsed by Brazil would spark the backing of BRICS and other emerging market and of developing coun-

tries,” said Gallagher. “Brazil now must press the West to make sure that the first tact in any new round of trade talks eliminates distortionary policies in the industrialized world, like agricultural subsidies,” he added. Speaking before Tuesday’s news emerged, Azevedo told AFP he was convinced he had the mettle to reboot the WTO. “The multilateral trading system is weakened by a complete paralysis in the negotiations,” he said. “It’s about making the system respond to the realities of today’s world... The only way to do this is to promote trade and trade liberalisation as an important component of development policies,” he added. “We’re not going to do that unless we unclog the system,” he insisted, adding that a “modulation of the ambition” was needed to allow progress.

Azevedo’s rival final-round candidate Blanco is a 62-year-old economist with the reputation of a trade heavyweight. He was Mexico’s negotiator for the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, served as a minister of commerce and also boasts solid private sector credentials. He and Azevedo repeatedly flagged up their broad support across a range of nations and economic levels, from the poorest to the richest, and had pitched a similar vision for breaking the Doha deadlock. But 55-year-old Azevedo’s insider status as an experienced negotiator and consensusbuilder at the WTO appeared to have clinched the contest. He has been Brazil’s WTO ambassador since 2008, making him well placed to navigate the system to try to clear the Doha logjam at a crunch summit in Bali in December.

Branson open to total sale of Virgin’s Australia arm

V

irgin Group chief Richard Branson has aired the possibility of selling his entire stake in budget carrier Virgin Australia, saying the airline’s branding is more important to him than ownership. Branson, who founded Virgin Australia as a rival to Qantas in 2000, sold a 10 per cent share to Singapore Airlines last month, leaving him with 13 percent. The British billionaire refused to rule out selling his remaining stake, telling reporters “we will see” when asked about his future plans for the Australian carrier. “I’m not too worried about

whether we sell down most of our stakes,” Branson said. “The 13 percent is pretty strategic in that it could be very valuable to a player one day, but it’s not that important from the

Virgin Group’s point of view.” Asked whether he would sell for the right price to fellow major stakeholder Etihad, Branson said: “We would cross that bridge if it came.” He said the “most important thing is the branding” -- the long-term royalties contract with the airline to use the Virgin name. If Branson’s latest 10 percent sale to Singapore Airlines gets the nod from Australia’s Foreign Investments Review Board, it will make the Asian carrier one of Virgin’s top three stakeholders alongside Virgin Group and Air New Zealand. t is close to midnight and Imelda Marcos is dancing in a trademark pink butterfly gown at a small Philippine town fiesta with adoring voters who still revere her dead dictator husband. At an age when many others are in nursing homes, the tireless 83-year-old is on the campaign trail, aiming to keep her seat in parliament in next week’s midterm elections and continue her family’s remarkable political resurrection. “It’s funny because the older I become the more committed I am and the more I feel I can do it,” Marcos told AFP on the weekend from the family’s ancestral home in the rural north of the country before heading to the nearby fiesta. The widow of Ferdinand Marcos is seen as a certainty to win after first being elected to Congress in 2010, representing half of Ilocos Norte province whose voters have stayed loyal to the family throughout decades of tumultuous politics. But the matriarch has eyes on a bigger prize -- a return to the presidential palace as first mother via her son, Ferdinand Marcos Jnr, who is sitting comfortably in the Senate and eyeing a 2016 run for the top job. “You always have dreams for your children, and the more they can serve the people, the better,” Marcos said when asked about her charismatic son’s wellknown presidential ambitions. Ferdinand Jnr, popularly known by his nickname, “Bongbong”, appears well-positioned for a presidential run after one in three voters nationally elected him to the senate for a six-year term in 2010.

Start-ups face hiccoughs in land of entrepreneurs THE INSIDE STORY

I

t is seen as a land of entrepreneurs, economic growth and huge business potential, but India appears to be failing its promising startup companies which are struggling to find investors. While there is no lack of ideas among the country’s vast young population, funding is declining from venture capitalists and rich “angel” investors, as they are known, who are often crucial to a young firm’s success. “Risk-taking appetite from investors is low,” said Internet entrepreneur Nameet Potnis, who is trying to address the problem by setting up Nurtured.in, a platform to connect startups with early-stage investors. “It is easy to set up an online business in India but very difficult to do business,” he told AFP. Three decades after businessman N.R. Narayana Murthy and six other Indians sat around a kitchen table and formed leading IT outsourcer Infosys, the country is yet to create a favourable business environment for new entrepreneurs. Just five percent of thou-

sands of Indian startups get funds from sources external to friends and family, analysts say. It is one of the toughest countries in the world for a startup to flourish, according to a 2012 report by US-based research firm Startup Genome. Venture capitalists invested $1.09 billion through 222 deals in 2011, but this dropped by 30 percent to $762 million through 206 deals in 2012, according to researchers at Venture Intelligence, based in southern Chennai city. The decline could not come at a worse time for the young Indian professionals and business graduates who are risking branching out on their own, after losing or quitting lucrative jobs amid the global downturn. India’s own economic growth slowed to an estimated 5.0 percent for the fiscal year that ended March, its slowest rate in a decade, but that has not deterred many youngsters from trying to turn their ideas into businesses. Some of India’s well-established startups include Nasdaqlisted online travel firm makemytrip.com, shopping website Flipkart and digital entertainment company Hungama. In recent years, ventures have branched into areas as varied as pet care, gaming, restaurant guides and e-learning, and the startup bug is spreading into

smaller Indian cities. “More companies are coming up and not that much... money is being put in,” said Sampad Swain, an entrepreneur who founded “Instamojo”, which helps to sell digital downloads. Jubin Mehta of Yourstory.in, an online site which tracks startups and entrepreneurs, said venture capitalists tend to look over 200 ideas before investing in one. “Roughly 500 startups come up each month. And less than five percent -- only about 25 -receive external funding,” he said. Kulin Shah, an entrepreneur and former venture capitalist, said angel investors have become more demanding in the current economic climate, trying to avoid getting their money

blocked in ventures for too long. Angels are increasingly unwilling to fund firms that are clones of foreign startups or face intense competition, such as online car rentals, car pools and best-deal ventures, Shah said. But too much caution can prevent investors spotting a hit, such as Nischal Shetty’s Twitter application “justunfollow”, which has more than three million registered users including 10,000 paid customers. When he set it up three years ago, he generated revenues from day one despite a lack of enthusiasm from external investors. “Angels asked me: how will you make money from this?” he said. There are a few signs of hope for budding entrepreneurs.

EDITORIALS Hero or villain?

I

t is quite a bad feeling when reel life heroes turn out to be real life villains. In a land where actors are deemed gods with, each with their own loyal fan following whose fervour borders on fanaticism, it is a letdown when we see the real face of the stars. The other day one of the “promising “ stars, not actors, but stars showed his real face when he got into a row with two ordinary men on the road. His complaint was that he who was in his swanky drive was made to wait behind the two who were in a smaller car. He allegedly says he honked several times to be given way so that he may go ahead but the two ‘ignored’ him. He makes use of the next gap he gets, overtakes, blocks them and then harangues them for their rude

READERS’ VIEWS

behaviour. The next thing he makes a call. In 15 minutes flat zoom in men in safari suit and they take over as he quietly walks away. They beat up the hapless two, not exactly black and blue, but bad enough. The police take them away as if they were the ones who were troublemakers. Confusion reigns at the police station and then one of the guy who was almost beaten black and blue tries to clear the air before the media persons assembled that it was a small issue and he does not want it blown out of proportion. The scene would have been reversed if it had been in a movie of his. He would take the men in safari suits to task and walk away as the rich brat takes cover and cowers before him.

CHASING ZOMBIES IN GOA

SCREEN POOPERS

Quirky side up Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, the makers of 99 and Shor in the City, are now gearing up for the release of their upcoming film Go Goa Gone, a zombie comedy of epic proportions. There has never been a film like this before in India, but that’s not the only reason why it’s in the news. Raj Nidimoru spills the beans about the film. HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

Y

ou could argue that Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, better known as Raj & DK, have gone totally nuts when they began thinking about their latest film Go Goa Gone. After all, who makes a zombie film in an Indian context? On top of that, how do you convince the audience, most of whom have no clue about zombies, that it’s a rip-roaringly funny film beyond the gore and dead people sauntering as if they are dazed eternally? But then, it’s precisely this aspect of surprising people has been a constant in their filmography so far. Their previous film Shor in the City received rave reviews and that firmly put them on the map of directors to watch out for in Bollywood. Ask Raj Nidimoru if it was a

conscious decision to try something as wacky as Go Goa Gone soon after a hard-hitting film like Shor in the City, he says, “It wasn’t a conscious effort. I think out-of-the-box thinking comes naturally for both DK and me. Even Shor in the City is unusual in its own way, but it’s true that Go Goa Gone is the wackiest film we have done so far.” Unlike the West, Indian audience aren’t well versed with the concept of zombies as much as they are with witches, vampires and werewolfs. “That’s the fun part of Go Goa Gone. We took something which is totally alien and put it in Indian soil. The characters in the film are as clueless as the audience and the process of discovery of what zombies do and how to survive them is incredibly funny. Beyond the gore, Go Goa Gone is a comedy film,” Raj adds. In the past few years, there have

been quite a few zombie films like Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead and TV series like Walking Dead which drew a lot of attention. Did he draw any inspiration from those films? “I did watch a lot of films from the genre but we were clear that we shouldn’t rip-off any film. Then the whole purpose is defeated. The intention was to see what we could add to make the film completely different,” he confesses. One issue with zombies is that they don’t have a motive to kill. “Zombies are neither romantic like vampires and nor good looking. You can’t have a zombie character beyond a certain time limit. So, everything boils down to how the

other characters react to a zombie attack. Go Goa Gone is like an adventure in the jungle where the lead characters are struggling for survival,” he says. The presence of Saif Ali Khan, who plays a zombie hunter in the film, has made a lot of difference to the film and Raj Nidimoru says, “It would have ended up like an indie film which people would have discovered and recommended to others, but with Saif on board, it’s a mainstream film now. We needed someone who could carry off a macho, wacky character and Saif was perfect for the film.” Raj & DK will be once again teaming up with Saif Ali Khan for a romantic comedy for their next project. “It’ll have its share of edginess. Making a cliched film is not our cup of tea,” Raj signs off. (Go Goa Gone opens in screens on May 10)

The vamp from TV It is true that it is actors who rule Bollywood. Female leads — even in this progressive cinema age — have to try very hard to catch up, unless of course, they are the ‘item’ in the flick. However, we didn’t expect Ekta Kapoor, who has been imbibing the ‘true Indian values’ through her K series to use only lead actors and item girls for promoting her latest film Shootout At Wadala. She should have made Kangana Ranaut a part of the campaign too, after all, it is the Gangster star who’s the lead heroine of the movie!

Lilo takes the cake You would think the world has had enough of this blonde girlLindsay Lohan, but no. From admitting to snorting cocaine four to five times to evading tax, to being arrested, becoming lesbian then turning straight, Lilo has done it all. We wonder what her next attempt at hogging the limelight will be. Oh! wait, she is now said she likes being in a relationship with guys. And the rest of the world is supposed say Yay!

REVERSIBLE CONTRACEPTION

The 1960s was an important time for women; science and medicine had progressed significantly so as to help researchers come up with another mode of contraception — the intrauterine device. The IUD is a form of reversible contraception, which is the most effective type of birth control.

FLEME VARKEY fleme.v@postnoon.com

COILED FOR PROTECTION What is an IUD?

A

ccording to the definition by WebMD, “An IUD is a small, T-shaped plastic device that is wrapped in copper or contains hormones. The IUD is inserted into the uterus by the doctor. A plastic string tied to the end of the IUD hangs down through the cervix into the vagina.” There are two types of IUDs —hormonal and copper IUD. Both types of IUD prevent fertilisation of the egg by damaging or killing sperm. The IUD also affects the uterine lining. In India the popular IUDs are Copper-T and Multi loads.

A

s of 2002, IUDs were the most widely used form of reversible contraception, with nearly 160 million users worldwide. But this did not come without problems. In 1975, The Dalkon Shield, a popular IUD was recalled under charges that it had caused infertility in thousands of users. The side-effect that it caused, needless to say, had many women going off other IUDs as well, fearing consequences. Even in the ’80s the fear had not abated, Mary Mathews*, a newly married girl in 1981 recalls the effects. “While it was not very popular in India, in the US, there was a hue and cry about it. My sister-inlaw, who had used Dalkon Shield, found it difficult to conceive when they tried

after stopping the IUD. She went into depression and gradually became withdrawn. She later committed suicide because of the inability to bear children.” Dr MV Kishori, gynaecologist at a clinic in Srinagar Colony, reveals that not many women who come to her prefer IUDs. “Firstly, not many women are aware of the various methods of contraception available. All they seem to know about is abortion and the pill, which is a very sad thing. They are unaware of the methods to prevent the creation of an unwanted child in the first place.” The lack of awareness is partly due to the paucity of proper advertisements — at least compared to the morning after pill or iPill advertisements. There

used to be ads on TV on Copper T, but too few and far in between. Dr Kishori adds,“These devices prevent unwanted pregnancy as effectively as sterilisation, but unlike permanent sterilisation, when a woman wants to become pregnant she simply has to remove the IUD. But women are also hesitant to use IUDs because of the need for a doctor to put it in safely.” Talking about the sideeffects, she adds, “Menstrual cramps, heavier flow during periods which can lead to anaemia are some of the common symptoms. One must also keep in mind that it doesn’t reduce risk of contracting STDs or pelvic infections.” *Name changed on request.

Why are IUDs preferred?

A

review of studies of IUDs for emergency contraception has found that IUDs inserted within five days of unprotected intercourse prevented pregnancy 999 times out of 1,000 — a failure rate below 0.1 %.

Other forms of contraception Vaginal ring : The ring is made of flexible plastic and delivers estrogen and progestin. You place the ring in your vagina for three weeks, and then remove it for one week so that you have a regular period. n Diaphragm: Made of rubber and shaped like a dome, a diaphragm prevents sperm from fertilising an egg. It covers the cervix and must always be used with a spermicide. n Female condom: The female condom is made of polyurethane, or soft plastic, and protects against STDs. It is inserted deep into the vagina, over the cervix. Unlike the male condom, the female condom can be put into place up to eight hours before sex. n Patch: A contraceptive patch is a transdermal patch applied to the skin that releases synthetic estrogen and progestin to prevent pregnancy. Speaking at the Wired Business Conference in New York, Windows chief Julie Larson-Green reiterated that Microsoft is looking to change certain elements of its upcoming Windows 8 update, codenamed Blue, in response to user feedback. “Some of it is about not just about time on task or how quickly they learn it … some of it is just in the comfort level that people have.” That comfort level has left some confused, and others calling for the return of the Start button to Windows 8. Third-party apps that specialize in providing a button UI have soared in popularity since Windows 8’s release.

ilmmaker Boney Kapoor’s son may have found it easier than other newcomers to land a Bollywood movie, but that doesn’t mean he’s not the hard-working type, says Atul Sabharwal, who has directed the newbie in Aurangzeb. “Arjun Kapoor has worked very hard on this Yash Raj Films (YRF) project (Aurangzeb) and I’m confident that he’ll be convincing in both the roles,” says Sabharwal. Arjun, who has a double role in Aurangzeb, says the movie was offered to him before he even started filming Ishaqzaade. “I got Aurangzeb giftwrapped as a

Valentine’s Day present from YRF last year,” the actor quips. “The film is technically my first as it was offered before Ishaqzaade.” When asked what lured him to the project, he says: “Well, it wasn’t a typical YRF film. It showed tremendous potential and the fact that it was a double role only made me say yes faster.” Arjun, who’d be playing a nasty, power-hungry youth — Ajay Singh — and a grounded Vishal in Aurangzeb, says it was challenging to play the two roles. “Because the two characters are poles apart, they were that much harder to play. Even though Vishal has to pretend to be Ajay in the movie, the challenge was to keep Vishal’s essence alive even when he’s don-

ning his Ajay hat,” says the 27year-old, adding that Kaminey was one of the recent doublerole movies he thoroughly enjoyed. When asked who he related to more — Ajay or Vishal, the actor very obviously said Vishal. “He’s a man of few words, slightly reserved. I’m a little like that too,” he explained. Wasn’t working with fellow

newbie Parineeti Chopra easier in Ishaqzaade than working with veteran actors like Rishi Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Amrita Singh in Aurangzeb? “I was like a school kid in Ishaqzaade — had to be told everything. With Aurangzeb, I have graduated,” he responds quickly. “Moreover, while working with senior actors, one subconsciously learns a lot and strives hard to better oneself.” The famous but grounded star, who has films like Virus Diwan, Gunde and 2 States in his kitty among others, also tells us that it was Salman Khan who guided him and convinced him to act. “I wanted to become a director. It was because Salman Bhai saw something in me, I don’t know what, that I am where I am today.” Coming back to the actionpacked film, which has its fair share of steamy scenes, Aurangzeb also stars debutante Sasha Agha. Since Arjun Kapoor has been there, done that, in Ishaqzaade in terms of steamy scenes, we asked Sasha to tell us about her experience. She says: “It was part of the movie, hence part of my job. I had no qualms, plus I’ve known Arjun even before Aurangzeb, so there was no room for awkwardness.” Daughter of Pakistani singer Salma Agha, Sasha also boasts a singing talent. In fact, she has sung for Aurangzeb, which is set for a May 17 launch.

A king in the making? Only one movie old, actor Arjun Kapoor is all set to become Bollywood’s next superstar. The 27-year-old Ishaqzaade actor, who hasn’t let success go to his head yet, talks to Postnoon about his upcoming crime thriller Aurangzeb. He tells us that having a movie background made it easy for him to blend in.

Chinese authorities normally cut foreign films, due to sexual and political sensitivities, rather than add to them. In April the country's cinemas abruptly cancelled all screenings of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained just as it was released, with one viewer adding that a showing was stopped after just one minute. Nudity of the main character played by Jamie Foxx may have prompted the sudden censorship, the popular web portal Sina said at the time. Scenes were also cut from the latest James Bond film Skyfall, including a killing in Shanghai, along with mentions of prostitution in Macau and torture by Chinese security agents. AFP

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

NEW YORK: Carmelo Anthony busted loose to score 32 points and New York shut down Indiana in the final 15 minutes to post a 105-79 win that evened their Eastern Conference playoff series at one game each. Anthony, who came into game two shooting just 37 percent in the postseason, scored 22

points in the fourth quarter against the mistake-prone Pacers at Madison Square Garden. "I just thought in that fourth quarter our pace offensively was like old times again," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. The Pacers shot just 25 percent in the fourth and were

GIRO D'ITALIA

Enrico wins thriller, Wiggins loses time

SERRA SAN BRUNO: Enrico Battaglin claimed his maiden Giro d'Italia stage on Tuesday with fellow Italian Luca Paolini retaining the leader's pink jersey and race favourite Bradley Wiggins losing time after an epic 246km of racing from Policastro to Serra San Bruno.

Battaglin, who rides for the Bardiani team, surged out of a small group of survivors from the day's second and last climb to sprint to a well-earned victory after nearly 6hr 15min of racing to the southernmost point of the Giro's 96th edition. "I knew this stage could suit me, especially with the rain which put the brakes on some people's ambitions," said Battaglin. "I'd saved some energy whenever I could earlier and probably attacked a little from the line but I held on for the win." Minutes earlier, Danilo Di Luca, the Giro winner in 2007, belied his 37 years to launch an audacious attack towards the end of the final climb and race into the lead with Colombian Robinson Chalapud on his wheel. hampered by turnovers, committing a total of 21 that New York converted into 32 points. The second round playoff series now switches to Indianapolis for Saturday's game three at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Knicks reversed a two point deficit by going on a dynamic 36-4 run that led to a

98-68 lead with 3:30 left to play. During that 12-minute stretch, the Pacers failed to make a single field goal. They missed on 14 consecutive attempts from the floor until Orlando Johnson drained one from beyond the arc with just over three minutes left. Iman Shumpert added 15 points on seven-of-11 shooting to help the Knicks rebound from a game one loss, 102-95. Raymond Felton also scored 14 points in the victory in front of a crowd of 19,033. Paul George led Indiana with 20 points but had only five in the second half. David West and George Hill finished with 13 and 12, respectively, in the loss. A few Knicks players had said they felt the Pacers went after Anthony's injured shoulder in game one, while the Knicks admitting they were outplayed. Sore shoulder or not, Anthony made sure that didn't happen again. "Melo just caught fire," the Pacers' George said. "He found opportunities and found mismatches and he was just being aggressive. "We still contested shots. I felt like we made it as difficult as we could, but that's why he's an elite player. He has the ability to make contested shots." AFP

MADRID OPEN

NOVAK OUSTED!

Djokovic was knocked out in the 2nd round of the Madrid Open as Grigor Dimitrov beat him 7-6 (8/6), 6-7 (8/10), 6-3.

MADRID: World No.1 Novak Djokovic was knocked out in the second round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday night as 21-yearold Grigor Dimitrov produced the performance of his career to date to win 7-6 (8/6), 6-7 (8/10), 6-3 in just over three hours. Dimitrov took the first set in controversial circumstances as he benefited from an overrule when serving set-point down at 4-5 before eventually taking it on a tiebreak. He then fluffed a match point as the second set also went all the way to a tie-break, but regained his composure to break him twice in the final set to seal it 6-3. Djokovic had been heavily fancied to repeat his 2011 triumph in the Spanish capital after ending Rafael Nadal’s eight-year reign on the clay of Monte Carlo a fortnight ago. However, the Australian Open champion was troubled throughout by Dimitrov’s

Djokovic blames lack of preparation MADRID: Novak Djokovic believes his preparation for the Madrid Masters was badly affected by not being able to practise due to an ankle injury after he was knocked out in the second round by Grigor Dimitrov. Djokovic had recovered from rolling the injured right ankle whilst playing for Serbia against the USA on Davis Cup action last month to claim his first title in the Monte Carlo Masters a fortnight ago. However, he said he did not know whether he would even take part until Saturday, although he also acknowledged that he had been beating by the better player on the evening. “I didn’t prepare myself so well, but, look I’m not trying to find any excuses for the loss. I tried to do my best in this moment, and maybe my best is not like it was in Monte Carlo. AFP

powerful ground strokes in a match filled with controversy. The game had gone with serve until 4-5 in the first-set when with Dimitrov set-point down he appeared to have fired long. However, much to Djokovic’s displeasure the chair umpire was summoned to examine the mark and ruled that the ball had indeed been in. Dimitrov went onto hold and then broke Djokovic to serve for the set himself, but just as when the two met in Indian Wells earlier in the year, the World No.28 crumbled when trying to see out the opening set and Djokovic broke straight back. The seventime Grand Slam champion then took control of the tie-break and had two more set-points at 6-4, but Dimitrov this time hung in and opened up his own opportunity to take the set with a blistering forehand down the line at 6-6.

Tomic’s father suspended LONDON: The father of Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic (right) has been indefinitely banned from all tournaments as he faces charges of assaulting his son’s practice partner, governing body the ATP announced on Tuesday. John Tomic claimed in a court appearance in Madrid on Monday that he had acted in self-defence when he headbutted Thomas Drouet shortly

after their arrival in the Spanish capital for a Masters Series event. He denies a charge of assault. “Following last week’s incident in Madrid concerning John Tomic, and the ensuing investigation, Mr Tomic’s credential privileges have been suspended at all ATP tournaments until further notice,” read an ATP statement released on Tuesday.

Support offered for Bernard after father banned SYDNEY: Australian tennis officials say moves are under way to provide support for Bernard Tomic and help him find a new coach after his father was indefinitely banned from all tournaments. John Tomic is facing charges of headbutting his son’s practice partner Thomas Dro-

uet, with the ATP suspending his credentials until further notice. He denies the charges and will return to a Madrid court for a hearing on May 14, by which time his son is likely to be in Italy playing the Rome Masters. Tennis Australia’s head of professional tennis Todd

Woodbridge said he had been in touch with the player and help was being offered. “John is his coach but will obviously be out of the picture now — we don’t know for how long — so helping Bernard is our priority,” Woodbridge told The Australian newspaper. AFP

his season, four teams — Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad — have won all their matches at home and all these sides are eyeing a place among the top four. SRH, who take on Chennai Super Kings today on their home turf, are keen to extend their win streak at home and slowly make their way to the qualifiers. The Sunrisers, who were initially considered as one of the underdogs, emerged as the surprise package of the tournament having won seven matches from the 11 they played. However, with most of their matches being low scoring ones, Hyderabad are lagging behind in their net runrate, a factor which could later prove to be a hindrance in their journey to the

Meanwhile, Chennai, who need one more win to cement their place for the playoffs, would look to put up a much better show than they had in their previous clash against the Mumbai Indians. CSK registered the lowest score this IPL when they were dismissed for a paltry 79 against MI. But the team and the management have taken this defeat in their stride and have said that it was good that this loss happened during the league matches rather than at a later stage. Today’s match will be a battle of not just talent but one of strength, tactics, luck and undoubtedly grit. While Chennai Super Kings have experience on their and a brilliant batting line-up, SRH have a bowling attack which has done extremely well this IPL season.

Is Ferguson about to retire? The Daily Telegraph claimed the 71-year-old Scot was ‘giving serious consideration’ to leaving Old Trafford and could announce his retirement before the end of the week. LONDON: Alex Ferguson could be about to sensationally retire as manager of English Premier League giants Manchester United, according to British media reports on Tuesday. The Daily Telegraph claimed the 71-year-old Scot was “giving serious consideration” to leaving Old Trafford and could announce his retirement before the end of the week. The newspaper did not cite sources but said that “senior figures” at the club could not be contacted to either confirm or

Cups, four League Cups, and two Champions League titles, as well as a host of other honours. United claimed an unprecedented 20th English league title last month, having narrowly lost out to local rivals Manchester City the previous season. During Ferguson’s tenure, United have become one of the most famous teams in world sport, with American business magazine Forbes recently reporting that they are worth $3.17 billion (2.42 billion euros).

deny the information. British bookmakers reported a rush of bets on Everton manager David Moyes to become Ferguson’s successor. Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has also been linked with the position in the past. Ferguson has been at United since November 1986 and is the most successful manager in the history of English football. In his 26-and-a-half-year reign, he has led the club from the English northwest to 13 Premier League titles, five FA

Dzeko goal sees City home…barely

MANCHESTER: Carlos Tevez advanced a compelling case for a place in Manchester City’s FA Cup final team with an effervescent display in his side’s 1-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday. The Argentine was one of eight players drafted into the team by manager Roberto Mancini and he created the game’s only goal in the 35th minute with a cross that was dispatched by Edin Dzeko. Tevez will now hope to get the nod on Saturday when City tackle Wigan Athletic in

the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Victory took City seven points clear of Chelsea

in second place, 10 points below champions Manchester United, while West Brom, who

have not won in seven games, remain eighth. West Brom manager Steve Clarke sent his team out in an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation, but the visitors were nonetheless the first team to settle. On-loan Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku carried the early menace, shooting narrowly wide from 25 yards and then heading straight at goalkeeper Joe Hart after City failed to clear their lines from a free-kick. Gradually, however, the hosts began to assert themselves.

CHELSEA MANAGER CAROUSEL

Rafa expects the ‘special one’ to return Jose Mourinho, who left Chelsea in September 2007 after three years in charge, has been strongly linked with a return to his former side. LONDON: Rafael Benitez said on Tuesday that he expected to be replaced as Chelsea coach by the club’s former manager, Jose Mourinho. Interim Chelsea manager Benitez reiterated that he would be leaving Stamford Bridge as planned at the end of the season, having signed a short-term contract in November following the sacking of Roberto di Matteo. Real Madrid coach

Mourinho, who left the London club in September 2007 after three years in charge, has been strongly linked with a return to his former side. “The next year there will be another manager,” said Benitez. “I think everybody knows who will be here,” the Spaniard added, in a clear reference to Portuguese manager Mourinho. However, Benitez would not be drawn into referring to Mourinho directly by name and

insisted that the speculation about the identity of his successor would not distract him from the task at hand. “I will concentrate on my job now,” he said. For all he has done in guiding Chelsea into next week’s Europa League final against Benfica, Benitez has never been accepted by the Blues faithful on account of his prolonged war of words with the Londoners in general, and Mourinho in particular.

Wigan face drop after defeat Wigan find themselves three points from safety. TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Wigan Athletic face an uphill battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League after twice relinquishing the lead in an agonising 3-2 loss at home to Swansea City on Tuesday. Wigan, who tackle Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, could have moved out of the bottom three with victory, but instead they find themselves three points from safety with only two games to play. After the Wembley clash with City, who warmed up with a 1-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion, Roberto Martinez’s side visit fourth-place Arsenal before hosting Aston Villa on the season’s final day. Wigan have pulled off several improbable escapes from relegation in recent seasons and manager Martinez vowed that his players would not give up. “It’s a missed opportunity. Obviously, we were playing at home,” he told Sky Sports. “The injuries we’ve picked up recently have been very costly.”
