Auto drivers threaten agitation

A

uto Drivers Unions Joint Action Committee (TADJAC) has demanded that the State government direct the Road Transport Authority (RTA) to immediately register 300 autos which were purchased seven months back. It also threatened to hold demonstrations if the government fails to respond to their request. Speaking to the media here on Sunday, Mohd Amanullah Khan, TADJAC leader, demanded that the government adequately compensate the auto drivers concerned for delaying registration of new autos as against government order (GO) number 90. He expressed anguish that several auto drivers were unable to pay installments to auto financiers, who lent money for buying new autos. Khan also alleged that traffic police personnel were imposing heavy penalties for not getting their vehicles registered. NSS

Hapless woman abandons infant, caught Pushed to desperation by poverty and an indifferent society, the woman says she had no option left but to abandon the child. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

J

Anasuya, a woman pushed around by fate and ill-treated by men, came to the City from Nawabpet in Mahbubnagar district with her illegitimate girl child and tried to abandon her on the roadside. Anasuya was, however, caught in the act and her daughter handed over to the child welfare department. The infant is now in the care of Shishuvihar in Ameerpet. Anasuya’s tragic tale was revealed after her arrest. Chandrayangutta inspector A Srinivas Rao said that at 35, Anasuya was widowed and her husband J Sankaraiah left his wife and child behind with no financial security. He was a daily wage earner and had little savings. Anasuya found work as a daily wage labourer but was constantly hounded by men who chased her seeking sex, she complained. In an attempt to fob off the

pack, Anasuya decided to marry again. Slowly, she came to trust a man and intimacy developed between the two. The man kept promising to marry her as soon as he could earn enough money. In the meantime, Anasuya became pregnant.

She was terrified of social ostracism and her inability to bring up a girl child. She was already finding it hard to make ends meet with her six-year-old son. When the father of the infant knew of the pregnancy, he insisted on an abortion, but doctors

refused to abort as the foetus was six months old. Anasuya’s lover turned tail and refused to accept responsibility. As she was perturbed by sexseeking men at night, Anasuya planned on to leaving Nawabpet and coming to Hyderabad to search for job. She also planned to give up the child once it was born. Anasuya told police that she tried to hand over the infant to many people but nobody wanted to ‘buy’ the child from an unknown woman. It was then that she attempted to leave her baby on the roadside, saying she did not have the heart to kill her. During questioning, Anasuya refused to give away the name of her lover who promised marriage and impregnated her. The inspector said that in spite of his best efforts, Anasuya stuck to her stance and said that it was all her fault and it was pointless putting her lover in trouble. “Will that thug who cheated her ever know what a sacrifice the woman has made for him?” wondered Rao.

ITVS Suryanarayana, assistant commissioner of police, Begumpet, yesterday inaugurated CCTV cameras at the Ayyappa temple at Bolarum. In all, 12 high-resolution cameras have been installed all around

the temple premises to track the movement of people and vehicles, both inside and outside the temple. Equipped with a UPS system, these cameras will work round-the-clock and will capture images even during when there is no electricity. The captured video will be stored for two months and can be accessed by law enforcement and traffic police. The temple at Bolarum is the first Ayyappa temple that was established in Andhra Pradesh.

ne of the major works after CoP was the second phase of the Charminar Pedestrian Project (CPP). It was generally agreed that it turned out to be an eyesore which prompted GHMC commissioner MT Krishnababu to call engineers “worse than masons.” And, a munificent commissioner promised engineers that they would be sent on study tours abroad to see how pedestrianism is achieved with a touch of beauty, not ugliness. But the promise made last year remains a mirage. While Krishnababu is on a China tour

for the second time in a few months, the engineers continue to dream of foreign locations with little hope of fulfilling it. Corporators at least have the sanction to go on inland jaunts, euphemistically called “study tour.” But engineers who get whipped for everything at the GHMC must remain grounded. The commissioner had made a public announcement of “foreign education for engineers” during the workshop of “nonmotorised transport system” held here in December with experts from Delhi explaining the concept to engineers. The upgradation trip was to have cost `1 crore. Only senior officials get for-

eign jaunts. But when the commissioner made the announcement, many marveled at his magnanimity. What these foreign trips resulted in remains a moot question and even Lokayukata is yet to get an answer as to what these trips has brought to the citizens of Hyderabad. After the commissioner’s sensational announcement,

many engineers are learnt to have studied various foreign cities that took their fancy. The plan was also drawn up for a batch of 10 superintendent engineers to be flown out followed by another batch of executive engineers. “While our general knowledge improved with the exercise, the dream has not come true,” said an engineer derisively. Instead, they face the wrath of corporators who are planning to take engineers and officials to task for various delayed works. In fact, the postponed general body meeting scheduled for April 9 was to have proved an “official bashing” by elected representatives.

T

he entire State Cabinet seems to have plunged into election mode. The launch of the Indiramma Kalalu-Netiki Saakaram (dreams of Indiramma-realised now) and Amma Hastham (mother’s hand) programmes to lure the dominant SC and ST and majority of people living below the poverty line have acted as a bugle for starting the race for the next government. Not surprisingly then that only a few ministers are seen in their offices in the Secretariat these days. The feeling that governmental welfare schemes are not being properly highlighted has seeped into the leaders’ mind and each is eager to get a headstart,

Minister for women and child welfare Vakiti Sunitha Lakshma Reddy said, “There have been a lot of holidays since we kicked off the Indiramma Kalalu programme to promote the revolutionary SC and ST sub-plan across the State. Apart from Good Friday, which is a public holiday, there were continuous public holidays like Ugadi, second Saturday and Sundays.” She said that these holidays are also one of the reasons for the slackened ministerial visits. Sunitha added that she generally clears files at home during her leisure hours. The minister said that she held a review meeting with her department officials to monitor the progress of development activities of her department a few days back.

TJAC was formed by all leaders who support the cause of a separate Telangana and not necessarily just those who belong to the TRS. It has people from all walks of life and political parties. On one hand, the TRS says that the Congress will never carve out Telangana at any cost, and on the other it shows reluctance to join hands with BJP, which is openly fighting for the cause of separate Telangana state. This could be as a result of the fear of losing Muslim votes,” a TJAC leader told Postnoon on Monday. The leader further said that the very stand of the TRS is creating trouble for them at many places and making them the butt of criticism in the eyes of several pro-Telangana leaders. “Many pro-Telangana leaders have criticised us for not opposing the decision of the TRS. They are citing the support extended by the TJAC to BJP candidates in Nizamabad and Mahbubnagar districts, which led to their victory eventually,” he said. The TJAC has primarily decided to ignore this issue at this juncture as there is still a lot of time left for the elections.

A rights group claims that twice as many men commit suicide as women over false harassment allegations. PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com

I

n the wake of the alleged suicide of an IT employee in Bangalore, Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) took up the cause of male suicides on Sunday when it held a candlelight vigil in the City demanding that the ‘draconian gender-biased’ dowry-related laws be rectified. The NGO dedicated to men’s rights, distressed husbands and their families, alleges that over 60,000 men (twice the number of women) commit suicide each year due to fake allegations in 498A cases or due to harassment

from their wives and relatives. In a country that’s deemed absolutely the worst place in the world for women to live, the very notion of men claiming to be the real victims of the system, to put it kindly, beggars belief. Even more so when men’s rights groups anoint themselves ‘the martyrs of marriage,' asserting that it is men that suffer most in dowry cases which they say are biased solely in favour of the fairer sex. This, at a time when NCRB data estimates that a bride is burned every 90 minutes in this country. Still, while SIFF’s data interpretation is highly contentious. Their concerns, however, are

very legit. Almost every member of the AP SIFF that congregates at Public Gardens every week is anticipating or already fighting a legal battle with their spouse. Each of them has a horror story to tell — of false accusations, nights spent in jail, mothers and sisters arrested, jobs lost, passports confiscated, police abuse, costly expenses, custody battles and lives put on hold, while trials prolong endlessly. Compared to the plight of millions of women in the country today, there might be few willing to cry them a river. But the question here is not so much the nature of their fight or their gender as it is about their right to a

fair hearing and an open trial. But in a system in which the odds are stacked against them from the beginning, it is indeed hard for them to make their voices heard. “We can’t register an FIR in a police station. They won’t take our complaints seriously. We feel rejected by the legal system which is completely biased. So, we have no place to register our grievances or seek redress. We are being treated as second-class citizens. It is because of this that men are turned into criminals or otherwise, take their own lives," rues Partha Sadhu Khan, a longstanding member of SIFF. He adds that it’s not just them but their families and even their chil-

dren that are suffering in these conflicts. “Traditionally portrayed as protectors and providers, there’s no one to protect us now. So we are demanding that a separate ministry be set up for men," chip in others. The group say their aim is to fight for their own rights, not to curb women’s rights. “We are not anti-feminist. We are not antiwomen. But it shouldn’t be as it is now either, which is a woman’s word against mine; no investigation necessary. So what we are asking is be given a chance for us to make our case. We are asking for laws to be made gender-neutral," concludes another member Shailesh Koona.

‘Near potable’ lake water? HMDA officials are finally hopeful of Hussain Sagar lake’s water being fit for reuse. By reuse, they mean almost potable quality that will soon be used by industries and for construction purposes. M ANIL KUMAR RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com efore the tirade against the lake cleaning project begins, it is vital to point out that Hussain Sagar lake’s water is being supplied to over 33 parks and industries in the Azamabad industrial area near Osmania University (OU) and five housing ventures. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) had requested the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to pay for the water that is being supplied to these public properties, but the GHMC has refused to comply. HMDA officials are now positive that the lake’s water will soon be of “near potable” quality, despite the fact that industrial effluents continue to flow into the lake from the Kukatpally nallah.

As part of dredging the Kukatpally nallah, the HMDA has decided to even dredge up the polluted lake bed and shift it to the quarry areas in Hyderabad Central University.

B

still flowing into the lake. So far, the pollution control board, which is the governing authority in this issue, has remained mum.

THE FLIP SIDE

HOW HAS THIS BEEN ACHIEVED

Vivek Deshmukh, chief engineer of HMDA, says: “Two sewage treatment plants (STP) of 30 and 20 mega litres per day (MLD) hydraulic range have been working throughout the year to clean the lake. Apart from this, we have placed interception and diversion (I&D) structures along the four nallahs that flow into the lake. Three of these nallahs carry non-toxic and non-hazardous dredge, which is then treated.” The I&D structures have been placed along the Picket, Banjara and Balkapur nallah. The 30 MLD STP (that is still undergoing trials) is located at the Picket nallah opposite KIMS Hospital

on Minister Road, and the other, with 20 MLD capacity, is on the Balkapur nallah adjacent to the Khairatabad flyover. The Khairatabad STP is the pride of HMDA’s environment wing as it was recently upgraded to tertiary level using membranes imported from Australia.

DRAWBACKS

The fourth nallah in Kukatpally contains most of the toxic industrial waste and has not yet received its share of dredging. “We have not been able to

Effluent inflow from nallahs Banjara: 11.98 MLD Picket: 20.39 MLD Kukatpally: 29.06 MLD Balkapur: 10 MLD dredge the Kukatpally nallah due to some technical issues, but we have placed I&D structures and this diversion initiative takes most of the industrial effluent away from the lake. A small part of it, however, still finds its way

into the lake,” says Deshmukh. Public toilets and arresting sewage from businesses that have sprouted around the lake have not figured in the grand plans yet. The weak Water, Land and Trees Act (WALTA) has not stopped the mushrooming of food and beverage joints around the lake, which add to the lake’s garbage and sewage. A result of this is that on one side there are STPs working in a frenzy to clean up the lake and on the other there are nallahs whose industrial effluents are

As part of dredging the Kukatpally nallah, the HMDA has decided to even dredge up the polluted lake bed and shift it to the quarry areas in Hyderabad Central University. The earlier plan was to dump it in Jawaharnagar, which seems to be the obvious choice for any governmental agency to dump any sort of waste. The HMDA reassured the public that this sludge was “rich in nutrients” and would not cause any harm. “After facing opposition from residents of Jawaharnagar, we have changed our plans and will dump the waste in the quarry areas of the varsity campus. That, however, has not yet been decided. The dredge contains high levels of cadmium and we are working out a plan with the Ranga Reddy district collector to find a suitable place for dumping the lake bed dredge,” Deshmukh said. The promise of making this water potable is expected to be realised by 2014, according to HMDA officials. This, however, remains to be seen.

CENTURIES-OLD PROFESSION

For four centuries, generations of craftsmen from the small town have built ships prized by traders for ferrying goods along the ancient Indian Ocean trade routes that link Asia to the Middle East and Africa.

hailesh Madiyar forlornly surveys the giant shipyard in the port of Mandvi. A place synonymous with wooden boat-building for centuries, it now lies largely deserted. “Four years ago, around 20 ships were being made at any one time, now there are just two,” says Madiyar, of the Mandvi shipbuilders’ association. “These days, no more than five or six are made in a year,” he said, gesturing towards around a dozen half-built boats which have been shored up like carcasses after construction was abandoned. Mandvi stands on the banks of the Rukmavati river which flows into the Arabian Sea. A sleepy town located in western Gujarat state, it’s a place where shipbuilding and sea trading have traditionally gone hand in hand. But both industries have been pummelled by a ban from sailing in the pirate-infested waters off Somalia, once a lucrative trading destination. The restriction on certain

Indian-registered vessels was introduced in 2010 shortly after Somali pirates captured eight boats from Gujarat and almost 100 Indian crew members in a flurry of attacks over a period of several days. Small cargo boats, or ‘motorised sailing vessels’, are now prohibited from sailing south of Oman, effectively blocking trade not only to Somalia but other African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, as well as Yemen. “No Somalia, no trade. This ban has been disastrous for us,”

Workers take part in the construction of a vessel at Mandvi some 425kms west of Ahmedabad. said Musabhai Sameja, whose family has been involved in shipping in Mandvi for three generations. “Most traders have seen their income drop by half,” he added, complaining that investment in the construction of new boats has all but dried up. For four centuries, generations of craftsmen from the small town have built ships prized by traders for ferrying goods along the ancient Indian Ocean trade routes that link Asia to the Middle East and Africa. Today, using techniques

passed down through generations, the few craftsmen who still have work build a kind of mastless dhow favoured for its durability and also its size, which allows easy access to the region’s smaller ports. The working day begins at the crack of dawn with a dizzying ascent up a ladder pitched steep to the side of the boat. The craftsmen then use traditional tools such as hand-saws, hammers and chisels to cut and shape planks of sal, a hard wood native to South Asia. With an average cargo capacity of 1,000 tonnes, Sameja said the boats fill a niche in the trade of basics such as rice and flour to war-ravaged Somalia, a country with a long coastline but few ports accessible to big container ships. But more recently, the boats have been seen as easy prey for pirates operating in one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, according to the ban imposed by India’s Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) in March 2010. Much smaller than tankers and lacking sophisticated tracking equipment, the boats are easier to seize and then use as moth-

er ships from which to attack larger vessels. But Sameja said traders are prepared to take the risk and would have preferred to employ private security to protect their ships. Meanwhile, with no such restrictions, business to Somalia for traders based mainly in the United Arab Emirates is thriving. Edward Simpson, an expert on the dhow trade at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, said shipbuilders in Dubai are constructing wooden boats with twice the cargo space as the vessels from Mandvi. He recently saw a Somaliabound ship being loaded in Dubai with everything from Japanese second-hand cars, generators and tractors, to eau de cologne. While some families have moved their business from Mandvi to the UAE to skirt the ban, others have quit altogether. “There are only about 10 families left in the trade now,” said Saleh Mohammed, who sold his last cargo boat a year ago. “Before the ban there were more than 30.”

Want to be a responsible citizen by not dumping electronic waste in open areas, which is pushing water and land contamination? You can soon do this with help of Attero, India’s largest electronics asset management company. A UN report projects that by 2020, e-waste from computers would dramatically increase by 500 per cent and that from discarded mobile phones will increase 18 times from 2007 levels in India. Informal workers currently collect; dispose and recycle majority of e-waste. This will be a serious problem for the ecosystem if citizens do not follow proper recycling channel in dumping e-waste. In this regard, IFC, a member of the World Bank Group has also launched an initiative with Attero to collect and responsibly recycle e-waste through an inclusive approach that integrates informal waste collectors in an organised network. Rohan Gupta, COO and cofounder, Attero, says, “We are educating rag-pickers and incentivising them to bring this e-waste to near by collection points. This will make a formal supply chain. On the other side, we will also educate public with help of media to raise awareness to make proper supply chain.” Talking on viability of revenue model of Attero, he says, “Any business cannot live on grants forever. China's economic growth slowed to 7.7 percent in the first quarter, the government said Monday, a surprise result that came in below expectations and raised concerns the nation's recovery is faltering. The figure for the three months to March, announced by the National Bureau of Statistics, compared with a median 8.0 percent forecast for the world's second-largest economy in a poll of 12 economists by AFP. China's economy expanded 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, snapping seven straight quarters of slowing growth and fuelling optimism for a solid recovery while other major economies remain relatively weak.

The whole business runs on advanced recycling technology and economically viable model. We will generate revenues by extracting pure metals from e-waste.” E-waste disposal also poses the threat of losing personal and business data. “In todays scenario, all personal and valuable data is stored in our mobiles,

computers and external drives. If we through it irresponsibly, it can actually go in to wrong hands creating problems for individuals,” he points out. “Leaving old electronic appliances like refrigerators, ACs and TVs in a store room is neither a good thing do. They release harmful gases, which may create various health problems. Even if an individuals dumps in an open space, it can end up in canals or rivers causing serious environmental hazards,” he says. In the developed world, a citizen has to pay decent amount and get his electronic waste disposed safely. However, In India customer psyche is different and he expects something in return for giving his electronic waste. To make this a successful model and to bring a win-

All 12 bodies were recovered early Monday from the wreckage of the vehicle, an official told IANS. The victims, all from Kuthar village, were returning in a multi-utility vehicle after playing a cricket match. Police officials said the accident occurred Sunday night in Badgran panchayat in Bharmour subdivision, some 85 km from district headquarters Chamba. Eyewitnesses said the authorities had a tough time extricating the victims from the gorge. Chamba is one of remotest places in the state and scarcity and low frequency of passenger buses in the district leads to overcrowding of vehicles.

apua New Guinea must tackle the scourge of sorceryrelated murder, the United Nations said Friday, after an elderly woman was beheaded in the nation. The UN demanded an end to extra-judicial killings linked to accusations of sorcery and renewed calls for the government to repeal the Sorcery Act 1971, introduced to aid the passage of witchcraft cases through the courts. While the Act criminalised the practice of sorcery, human rights groups say it has also led to an increase in false accusations by people against their enemies and has given the notion of sorcery a legitimacy it

would not otherwise have had. “The provision of protection to victims of sorcery-related violence must also be increased as a matter of urgency,” the UN said in a statement from Port Moresby. ”The UN is deeply disturbed with the increasing reports of violence, torture and murder of persons accused of practising sorcery around the country. These vigilante killings constitute murder and must not be treated with impunity,” it added. In the Bana district of South Bougainville, two women accused of sorcery were kidnapped and tortured before one was beheaded. “This case adds to the

increase of reports of extrajudicial torture and killings of both men and women, especially elderly women, accused of sorcery,” it said. Local media had initially reported that police were present but were outnumbered and could do nothing to prevent the grisly deaths. The women were tortured for three days, suffering knife and axe wounds, reports said. The killing came just days after six women accused of sorcery were reportedly tortured with hot irons in the Southern Highlands. fter months of rumours tha t Egypt ex-president Hosni Mubarak was at death’s door, footage of the toppled leader looking strong and defiant in court stunned many who had cared little about his fate. The 84-year-old Mubarak who is being held at a military hospital in Cairo, has been treated for a heart condition, fractured ribs, fluid in the lungs, depression and high blood pressure, according to lawyers and official accounts. At one point last year he was even declared clinically dead as he slipped into a coma. There were questions over whether he would appear in court for his scheduled retrial along with his top security chiefs for their alleged complicity in the murder and attempted murder of hundreds of peaceful protesters on January 25-31, 2011. But on Saturday he was in the dock, sitting upright and looking strong. Wearing sunglasses, he waved and smiled at supporters, chatting casually with his two sons Alaa and Gamal who face corruption charges. In the event, the retrial came to an abrupt end with the main judge stepping aside and sending the case to the Court of Appeal, which will then refer it to a new circuit. “I expected to see a sick old man and I expected to feel sorry for him,” said Cairo resident Heba Radwan. “But the pictures of him smiling and waving, they were so provocative.” His demeanour was in stark contrast to the pictures of a pale and ailing Mubarak at the start of his trial in August 2011.

HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS One cannot condole someone’s death. One can condole with someone, condole someone, but never condole someone’s death. And it’s a shame that such solecism appear on ‘premier’ newspapers.

T

his edition of the India political lexicon, first in India, comes in response to constant demand for a concise dictionary of Indian election terms, words and phrases. This year being the stepping stone to the stage for 2014 arena, students of history and Indian sociology need to update their knowledge of various terminology, accents and nuances of Indian democracy and its practioners: our netas. It’s a quickready reckoner, not a detailed examination of words and their roots like a traditional dictionary. Advanced students must refer to the OD, CD. Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram: The phrase refers to trapeze artists in the Great Indian Political Circus who swing and jump from camp to camp for material benefits. They should not be confused with circus artists who are professionals. Antonym: Sticky Ram: who never leaves a party because he is not in demand. Aam Aadmi: Not to be confused with Mango people. Aam Admi means an imaginary representative figure of Indian proletariat. The Congress has appropriated this character and

others too swear by him, but without success. The rationale of Congress existence is aam aadmi but he never exists for the party in reality. Antonym: Hamara Aadmi: This refers to the widely practised policy of Indian politicos where this label is given to the favoured. Andha Kanoon: Refers to the law that is moot. By usage it means the law used against one is andha while used against my his rival is acha kanoon. Most popular usage: Law will take its own course, meaning the law will take my course. Antonym: jaagte kanoon which refers to vigilant law which exists in theory, not in practice. Arree: Exclamation, often derogatory. Slang. It means many things like you stupid, look here, oh man. It depends on the taste and context of usage. Oxford Dictionary found it the most often used Indian ejaculation. Antonym: Ye, in Hindi the suffix ye adds reverence to the subject eg: aayiye, please come, jayiye, please go. Yeh Dil Mange More: This slogan originally coined by a softdrink co. is now meant for politicians’ avarice. It means he/she is yet not satiated with the black wealth earned, but wants more. Antonym: Tyag, give up, renounce, (outdated, no longer in daily use).

Baap ka Raj: (derog) rival parties’ favourite phrase when lashing out at opponents saying it is not their family reign but democracy. Frequently used today in mass communication. Antonym: Garib ka Raj, means nobody’s raj and the speaker is only a subject, not ruler. Mota Maal: Big money. To be qualified for this term, the scandal should be of the order of `1 lakh crore or more. Frequently used in UPA rule. Antonym: Chota maal, refers to lakhs upto `1 Crore, widely used terminology today in Indian politics where tariff for various works are available unwritten every sphere of public works.

Goonda Raj: Once used to mean a rowdy/rascal running the show, but today means rule of politicians. Derogatoriness of the phrase has waned off from wide usage. Antonym: Moonga Raj, rule by the dumb which is considered worse than Goonda Raj (To be continued next Monday)

TAILEND Disclaimer: Neither the author nor the paper nor any individual is responsible for the dictionary as it evolved in the Indian democratic practices over the years. If anyone, it is the aam aadmi who is to be held for errors as he is always accused for all ills of the country.

Maduro says it was a fair result and so on, but if he were to take the right message from result, it is that he cannot now sit back and run affairs like his mentor Hugo Chavez. For the people Chavez was more than a leader; he was many things to them, the embodiment of their aspirations and nationalism. But the 50.7 majority that won Maduro the top post says that almost half the nation do not repose the trust they did on Chavez. And how long can one remain oblivious to the various problems that plague their country? Venezuela’s economy is in doldrums, and the people are fed up of rising prices and shortage of basic goods and incessant black-outs. Blaming America and facist powers for failures of Venezuela might have worked for Chavez, but Maduro cannot play that card. The people want him to deliver, not rhetoric, but results.

College-based NGO Street Cause that has divisions in 30 different colleges organised the event. One needed to pay `50 to be part of the walk. Around 1,500 people had registered for the event. Street Cause student co-ordinator from Vasavi college of engineering, Shrihari Agarwal, says, “We have been planning for the event since last month. We wanted to organise a walk and the only confusion was which cause to donate the money to. Then we came to know about the problems faced by students at government schools in Nalgonda. Due to the excess fluoride in groundwater, it is slowing turning poisonous. With the money raised by the walk, we intend to install a reverse osmosis water purification plant at the government schools in the area so that students get clean drinking water. The money raised is expected to be close to `5 lakh.” Participation certificates

Top this with poor personal hygiene, and you’re well on the road to getting athlete’s foot. Athlete’s foot is a fungal disease, often known as ring worm of the feet or tinea pedis. “It is very common. Every fourth or fifth person has it,” said

It’s official! Men can’t read women’s emotions A new study conducted in Tibet found that the core body temperature can be controlled by the brain.

MEDITATION can increase your body temperature SINGAPORE: Feeling cold? Try meditation! Meditation can make you feel warmer, a new study conducted in Tibet suggests, which found the core body temperature can be controlled by the brain. Researchers led by associate professor Maria Kozhe-vnikov from the Department of Psychology at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences showed, for the first time, that it is possible for core body temperature to be controlled by the brain. The scientists found that core body temperature increases can be achieved using certain meditation techniques

growing pains My child is seven and still continues to wet the bed. Is it a psychological problem? Children under the age of four usually struggle with bed-wetting. However, for some children, it continues past the normal age and can be a sign of other issues affecting them. For a child, wetting the bed is a huge source of shame and embarrassment. So how you, as a parent, handle your child’s

(g-tummo) which could help in boosting immunity to fight infectious diseases or immunodeficiency. Published in science journal PLOS ONE, the study documented reliable core body temperature increases for the first time in Tibetan nuns practising gtummo meditation. The g-tummo meditative practise controls “inner energy” and is considered by Tibetan practitioners as one of the most sacred spiritual practises in the region, researchers said. Monasteries maintaining gtummo traditions are very rare and are mostly located in the remote areas of eastern Tibet. The researchers collected data during the unique ceremo-

Using electroencephalography (EEG) recordings and temperature measures, the team observed increases in core body temperature up to 38.3 degree Celsius.

A second study was conducted with Western participants who used a breathing technique of the g-tummo meditative practise and they were also able to increase their core body temperature, within limits. The findings showed that specific aspects of the meditation techniques can be used by nonmeditators to regulate their body temperature through breathing and mental imagery. The techniques could potentially allow practitioners to adapt to and function in cold environments, improve resistance to infections, boost cognitive performance by speeding up response time and reduce performance problems associated with decreased body temperature. NEW YORK: There may be some truth in women accusing men of not understanding them! A research found that men had twice as much trouble deciphering women’s emotions from images of their eyes compared with those of men. To see whether men really did have trouble reading women’s emotions, Boris Schiffer, a researcher at the LWLUniversity Hospital in Bochum, Germany and his colleagues put 22 men between the ages of 21 and 52, with an average age of 36, in a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner, which uses blood flow to measure their brain activity. They then asked the men to look at images of 36 pairs of eyes, half from men and half from women, and guess the emotion the people felt. The men then chose which of two words, such as distrustful or terrified, best described the eyes’ emotion. Men took longer and had more trouble correctly guessing emotion from women’s eyes. Their brains showed different activation when looking at men versus women’s eyes. Men’s amygdala — a brain region tied to emotions, empathy, and fear — activated more strongly in response to men’s eyes. The findings suggest that men are worse at reading women’s emotions. This “theory of mind” is one of the foundations for empathy, so the deficit could lead men to have less empathy for women relative to men, researchers said in the journal PLOS ONE. PTI

‘NEVER PUNISH THEM FOR BED-WETTING’ problem can go a long way in helping him/her overcome it. Bed-wetting does not necessarily indicate a psychological problem. There are several causes for it, including it being inherited from the parent, if the parent was also a bed-wetter. Other reasons can be that the child has a small bladder, or is constipated or has a sleep disorder.

Sometimes, emotional difficulties in a child’s life can also cause this. Often though, this happens when the child has not been a bed-wetter for a while and is suddenly going through some difficulties psychologically. You need a lot of patience and understanding. As a first step, get your child evaluated by a paediatrician/doctor, so

that you know if there is any medical reason behind it. If you know that your child is going through something that is causing them emotional turmoil, then talk to him or take him to a child counsellor. Limit the amount of liquid your child drinks are night. Encourage them to empty their bladder twice before bed time and

praise them when they have a dry morning. Never punish them for wetting their bed and consider getting them a moisture alarm that will wake them up before they wet the bed. Entertainment JAPANESE HOSPITALITY

FALLING IN LOVE

S

iddharth’s first trip to Japan is turning out to be quite an experience, if his recent tweets are anything to go by. He is currently in Toyama, Japan, to shoot for a few songs for his upcoming film Something… Something in Sundar C’s direction. Hansika is his co-star in this romantic comedy whereas Brahmanandam and Ganesh Venkatraman are playing important roles. Apparently, it’s the first Indian film to be shot in Japan after a gap of 29 years and when the film unit landed in Japan, they got their first taste of Japanese hospitality. “Japan so far has been eventful. Met the head of state of Toyama. Appeared in the local paper! Ahem! Super jollies:) The people of Japan take courtesy and hospitality to another level (sic),” Siddharth posted on Twitter. He was all the more surprised when an elderly couple invited him to a sushi restaurant in the city and quite evidently, the actor was bowled over by their gesture and conversation. Apart from an odd Rajinikanth film, Indian cinema’s presence in

Japan is quite minimal and it’s only now that Bollywood is looking forward to making inroads in the Japanese market. Considering all this, Hansika, the lead actress of the film, was stunned to know that she has fans in Japan. Sharing her experience, Hansika tweeted saying, “I have never been so touched ever! Today a Japanese came running up to me and showed all my movie DVDs to me and said I’m your big Fan! Touched. Now I can proudly say I have fans in japan too:) (sic).” For the last three decades, Indian filmmakers have pretty much neglected Japan as an international destination for film shootings and preferred locales in Thailand, Malaysia and China. With Sundar C making an attempt to explore new locations in Far East, this film might just pave the way for more filmmakers to head to Japan in near future. Tamil filmmakers will be all the more keen to do just that, thanks to Rajinikanth’s image among moviegoers in Japan. Something…Something is expected to arrive in screens in May. Sathya has scored the music.

THE NOTES OF HUMOUR KANCHAN AGARWAL

kanchan.a@postnoon.com

T

hey have been friends for a long time but the thought of performing together as singers never occurred to them until Ash Chandler was spontaneously asked to join Manasi Scott on stage once. “Very few people have the heart to not think about the consequences and just sing. Not many singers would have taken it on. The crowd danced to The Time of my Life in the middle of a fast disco set,” they said. Ash has been supporting Heal-a-Child foundation since its inception. He has performed earlier in Hyderabad as a comedian and with his band. This time, with an intention to offer variety, it was only natural to sing with Manasi. Manasi has had a tough time keeping a straight face on stage. “I hope I don’t laugh while singing,” she says. No prizes for guessing who is to blame. Jokes apart, they have figured a way to bring in sync their genres of music. “I do current Hindi songs and he does English numbers. We have nailed which composer has copied which song from where. We are going to do a mash-up because they can sound so similar,” she says. This is not their first time and they are really looking forward to Hyderabad’s audience, and to raising a lot of money, of course. “They are not cynical. If you are good, they let their hair down and enjoy,” says Ash. On a lighter note, he adds, “And the men, if they get drunk, don’t dirty dance with me, like in other cities. I don’t enjoy that. Please tell your readers that.” Ash is not only a stand-up comedian and a singer. He is also an actor and entrepreneur. He has an Italian bistro in Mumbai and is the founder of Mumbai Motorcycle

Company. “Different moments ask me to do different things. I am staying true to each moment. Life is not about making a mark. It is about doing what you are supposed to do. You see a dog on the beach. He runs, digs, sleeps, eats, licks himself... he is not wondering if he is leaving a mark or if he is better than other dogs. I do it because I love doing it.” Manasi too is a bag of energy and zeal. A mother, a singer, a composer, an actor and now a lyricist, there is no stopping her. “Singing is my purpose,” she says. And assures me there is no difference between Manasi on stage and at home. “I love drama. What is life without drama? Everything for me is as exciting, as large, as emotional on and off stage. I love playing different roles,” she says. In spite of her busy schedule, Manasi makes it a point to

enjoy herself. “The last two years, post my divorce, I have used to discover myself. You must travel because that is when you truly find yourself after losing yourself.” Coming back to comedy, what does Ash think makes people laugh? “Freedom,” says Manasi. He agrees. “People have things to do. The moment comedy takes them away, the brain automatically feels relieved,” he explains. As a performer, he has his manoeuvres to strike a chord with the audience. “I let my mind go blank before going on stage. The first thing you want to do is not to remember anything. Your job is to connect to the audience. It is like dancing with a woman. You

have got to figure out what she wants to do. The idea is to be in the moment and say ‘I wonder what mood they are in’. The first five minutes of the performance is the preparation.” At this, Manasi adds “I think stand-up comedians are undoubtedly the most genuinely observant people with remarkable memories.” Late comedian Richard Pryor is someone Ash looks up to. “Comedy, at some level,” he says, “is about people telling genuine and thought-provoking stories. Pryor started taking painful and powerful incidents of his life and used that in comedy. He used his own dark side in the comedy. He set a benchmark for comedians implying that you can talk about things which are generally considered painful, in a humorous context. It can be quite cathartic.” Speaking about the future of stand-up comedy in India, he refers to his Ministry of Schtick, which is a group of comedians who do everything from stand-up, sketch comedy to improv. “We have the most talented people. Manasi has been an honorary guest and I think she can be a part of us. We will be the first Indian stand-up comedians to be featured on Comedy Central on April 21. I think it will be a big part of the future of comedy,” says Ash. They sign off with advice on how to survive in the industry. “Be lucky,” says Ash. “God, god, god, all the way. I am his truly blessed child,” says Manasi.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

HITCHCOCK’S MUSES

PICK OF THE WEEK

SEARCHING for the perfect blonde Over the past couple of years, there has been a revival in Hollywood’s interest in Alfred Hitchcock’s works. Apart from being the ‘Master of Suspense’, he was quite popular for his obsession with blondes. We take a look at this quirk. HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

L

ast year, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo pipped Citizen Kane in a Sight & Sound poll to decide the greatest film of all time. The same year, Sacha Gervasi made a film titled Hitchcock, which threw light on the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville during the making of Psycho. Julian Jarrold made a film titled The Girl, which explored the relationship that Hitchcock shared with Tippi Hedren, the actress who shot to fame with Hitchcock’s The Birds. Although Hitchcock and his films have been a popular subject in the field of film studies, the spike in interest in Hitchcock in the past few years is too glaring to ignore. We have known him as the master of suspense who had the uncanny ability to surprise his audience when they least expected him to and he has

plenty of films ranging from Rear Window to Psycho to prove this point. Anyone who has watched at least a handful of the 25-odd films he made after moving to the US in the late 30s would have noticed the presence of blondes, who are often the central figure in the film. Madeleine Carroll was the first blonde who was featured in Hitchcock’s 39 Steps, which released in 1935, and after that he worked with actresses like Grace Kelly, Tippi Hedren and Janet Leigh, to name a few. His obsession with looking for the perfect blonde has been well-documented and it even inspired a book Spellbound by Beauty: Alfred Hitchcock and His Leading Ladies, which was written by Donald Spoto in 2009. That in turn was the inspiration behind Julian Jarrold’s The Girl. Was Hitchcock obsessed with the lead actresses in his films or was he trying to fulfil the male fantasy of finding a woman endowed with great looks and wit? In Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock, there’s a scene where Alma Reville, played by Helen Mirren, screams at her hus-

band to abandon his search to find the perfect blonde, because she doesn’t exist in real life. Behind the veil of the surreal beauty most of

his actresses had, the mythical blonde in a Hitchcock’s film is often the most vulnerable character. Be it Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh in Psycho, or Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) from The Birds, almost all of them stand out in terms of their reaction when subjected to great amounts of fear and danger. The famous shower scene in Psycho featuring Janet Leigh was her genuine reaction to the incredible amount of pressure which Hitchcock had put on her to get a perfect shot. At times, he projected his actresses as daredevils who are ready to risk their own lives to save someone they truly loved or believed in. A case in point being Lisa, played by Grace Kelly, in Rear Window. As is the case with most great directors, Hitchcock’s relationship with his actresses has come under scanner, especially after Donald Spoto projected him as a sexual predator in his book. Several actresses who had worked with Hitchcock denied this allegation, but we are absolutely certain of one thing — that perfect blonde, once immortalised by Hitchcock, no longer exists.

The Birds (1963) It has been 50 years since Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds released and along with Psycho and Vertigo, it has become one of his most talked-about films. The film was loosely based on a story of the same name written by Daphne du Maurier. Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy and Suzanne Pleshette played the lead roles and The Birds went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed films of that year. The film is about a young socialite who goes to a small town in California only to find that the town has attracted violent birds for unknown reasons.

Luck is everything. My good luck in life was to be a really frightened person. I’m fortunate to be a coward, to have a low threshold of fear, because a hero couldn't make a good suspense film. Alfred Hitchcock Director

DID YOU KNOW? Hitchcock received five Oscar nominations for best director; DGA nominated him six times as best director, and he also received three nominations from Cannes. He never won any of these awards. Before he died in 1980, Hitchcock was honoured with five Lifetime Achievement Awards in various prestigious ceremonies.

He was infamous with his cast and crews for his practical jokes. While some inspired laughs, such as suddenly showing up in a dress, most were said to have been a bit more scary than funny. Usually he found out about somebody's phobias, such as mice or spiders, and in turn sent them a box full of them. We ain’t surprised!

LOS ANGELES: Just one day after Kobe Bryant underwent season-ending foot surgery, the Los Angeles Lakers kept their playoff hopes alive by surprising the first place San Antonio Spurs 91-86 on Sunday. In a game that had huge playoff ramifications, Dwight Howard (right) had 26 points and 17 rebounds and Steve Blake finished with 23 points and four assists for the Lakers who are 1 1/2 games up on the Utah Jazz, who play Monday in Minnesota. “Steve Blake was just going crazy,” said Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni. “Different guys stepped up but Dwight and Steve Blake carried the bulk of the work.” In the heat of the NBA playoff race, Bryant tore his left Achilles tendon in Friday’s win over Golden State. The 34year-old Bryant underwent surgery Saturday and the recovery time is expected to be somewhere around six-to-nine months. Blake said everyone had to

CHINESE GRAND PRIX CONTROVERSY

Red Bull chief says no Webber conspiracy

SHANGHAI: Red Bull team principal Christian Horner angrily dismissed talk of a conspiracy against Mark Webber as “complete rubbish” after the Australian’s dismal weekend in Shanghai. The spotlight was on Webber at the Chinese Grand Prix after team-mate Sebastian Vettel snatched victory from him in Malaysia last month. Webber said he was looking forward to getting in his car and putting the

furore behind him. However, he was thrown out of qualifying in Shanghai when a technical error left him with not enough fuel, then on race day on Sunday his afternoon came to an abrupt end when a wheel fell off on lap 16. Horner though was determined to put any talk of a calculated team effort against the 36-year-old Webber firmly to bed. “That is complete rubbish,” he was quoted by autosport.com as saying.

“Forget conspiracy. It is all about trying to get two cars to finish as high as we can. “Anybody that thinks there is a conspiracy here against one, or either, driver doesn’t know what they are looking at.” He added: “Mark knows exactly what happened. That is it. There is no conspiracy.” Webber had pitted after a collision with the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne, an incident that will see Webber relegated three

places on the grid in Bahrain this weekend. His Red Bull team were fined 5,000 euros ($6,500) over the wheel fiasco. “After changing the nose and all four tyres, Mark reported a problem with the right rear (tyre) on the out lap, which had certainly left the pit lane fully torqued up,” said Horner. “The right rear then came detached from the car and caused Mark to retire,” he added. AUGUSTA MASTERS

Scott pulls off Masterstroke Adam Scott had started the final round a shot behind joint leaders Cabrera and Snedeker.

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA: Adam Scott of Australia won the 77th Masters at Augusta National on Sunday, winning a playoff against Angel Cabrera of Argentina. Scott won at the second playoff hole with a 10-foot birdie. They both parred the first playoff hole. The 32-year-old Scott, the first Australian to win the Masters, shot 69 and Cabrera 70 as they both finished with nine under par totals of 279. Third place went to Jason Day of Australia two strokes back after a closing 70, with Tiger Woods (70) of the United States and Marc Leishman of Australia (72) in a tie for fourth place on five under. Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen (68) and Brandt Snedeker (75) of the United States shared sixth a further stroke back.

Sunday’s rainy final round before making a 25-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole, only to have Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, a two-time major champion, match him with a birdie to force a playoff. Faced with intense pressure, Scott calmly kept his poise, made

his shots and dropped a 10-foot birdie putt on ther second playoff hole to capture the green jacket, the jinx-shattering first ever claimed by an Australian golfer. “It’s amazing that it’s my destiny to be the first Aussie to win," Scott said. “Just incredible." Part of what toughened the

or Tiger Woods, the long wait for a 15th major title continues. The 37-year-old American briefly threatened the leaders going down the back nine in the final round of the 77th Masters on Sunday, but he had left himself with too much to do and he eventually had to settle for a tie for fourth place. That means that by the time he tees off at Merion Golf Club in the US Open it will be five years since he last won one of the big four titles. It also means that he will need to wait another year to add to his Masters green jackets, his fourth and most recent coming in 2005. Woods’ driving ambitions are to match and better the record 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus and to overhaul the record six Masters wins by Nicklaus. Starting the day four strokes behind joint leaders Brandt Snedeker and Angel Cabrera, Woods said that he believed he had an outside chance of winning a major while coming from behind.

32-year-old from Adelaide for the intense Masters crucible was watching two-time British Open winner Norman suffer three runner-up finishes at Augusta National without ever claiming the victory. “Part of this is for him because he’s given me so much

time and inspiration and belief," Scott said. “I drew on that a lot today. I somehow managed to stay in each shot when I needed to." Norman took a bogey at the 18th in the 1986 Masters to hand Jack Nicklaus his 18th and last major title at age 46. In 1987, Norman lost a Masters playoff when Augusta native Larry Mize holed a miraculous chip shot. In 1996, Norman suffered the greatest last-round collapse in major golf history, leading by six over Nick Faldo only to lose by five to the Englishman in an epic turnaround. “Most of us would feel that he could have slipped a green jacket on, for sure," Scott said. Scott himself settled for a share of second at Augusta National in 2011 with countryman Jason Day. The breakthrough green jacket might belong to Scott, but Norman earned himself a few stitches at least. “He inspired a nation of golfers," Scott said. “He was the best player in the world and he was an icon in Australia. Everything about the way he handled himself was incredible to have as a role model. AFP

une Warriors India, since their inception into the Indian Premier League, have failed to leave a mark and never seemed threatening enough for their opponents. Every season, they have ended at one of the bottom rungs on the points table, and are currently staggering at the eighth position. Off the four matches that they have played until now in the sixth edition of the IPL, the Warriors were successful only on one instance – against Rajasthan Royals. The Warriors faltered on many counts. Their batting has failed them and their bowling has a near similar tale to narrate. While the PWI side boasts of note worthy names like Ross Taylor, Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa and skipper Angelo

Matthews among the others, yet they have not been able to capitalise on their strengths. Matthews has appeared to be clueless since the beginning of the season and his teammates have followed suit. The Warriors take on former champions Chennai Super Kings today at the latter’s home ground, MA Chidambaram Stadium.

SCORECARD KKR V SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

CSK VS PWI AT 8PM ON SET MAX The Kings from Chennai, who seem formidable in comparison to their opponents, managed to sneak a victory in their last match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was a game which many believe was won on the sure

power of luck rather than talent as a no ball in the final delivery swung the fortunes of both the teams. But that apart, playing on their home turf, the Super Kings undoubtedly have an advantage. Also, their previous record has seen them rise to great heights, overcoming initial hurdles. Not only are they a strong team on paper but have also performed well on the field. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lost his wickets at crucial stages of different games, but he has chipped at the times of need. His other teammates like Ravichandran Ashwin, Badrinath, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay or Dwayne Bravo have also played their respective parts well. The Super Kings are currently placed at the fifth position on the points table with two victories from three matches. While it remains to be seen if CSK are successful against PWI tonight, the Kings are being touted as favourites for winning the trophy for the third time.

History of violence returns to England LONDON: Tear gas, stun grenades and knuckle-dusters provided a grim, bloody backdrop as hooliganism returned to haunt Europe’s top leagues this weekend. LONDON: Manchester City withstood a valiant fightback from Chelsea to win a gripping FA Cup semi-final 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday and knock the holders out of the competition. Goals in each half from Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero put City in control, but Chelsea replied through Demba Ba, only for Roberto Mancini’s men to resist the holders’ desperate search for an equaliser. Fifteen points behind Manchester United in the Premier League, City seem destined to relinquish their league crown, but they will be strong favourites to defeat Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup final on May 11 and reclaim the trophy they won in 2011. “I said before the game, it would be difficult because Chelsea are in a good moment, but we deserved to win,” said City manager Mancini. “Now we have to win the final and finish second in the championship - that is our target.”
