Prevention is better than cure The news of Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy as a preventive measure has shocked as well as enlightened women the world over. Postnoon speaks to City experts.

wrote: “I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.” However, there aren’t many like her. “Even though the psychological trauma with respect to mastectomy is gradually decreasing because of awareness,
there aren’t too many women in India who opt for this preventive surgery. This should change now hopefully,” says Dr Palanki Satya Dattatreya, senior consultant,
medical oncologist, Omega Hospital. Dr Dattatreya adds that the incidence of breast and ovarian cancer is higher among those
who have a family history. “Multiple genes are associated with Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC)–BRCA mutations are the most common ones of those. Harmful mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can produce very high rates of breast and ovarian cancer, as well as increased rates of other cancers.” Dr Niti Raizada Narang, senior consultant medical oncologist, Fortis Hospitals and Vikram Hospitals, says: “In India, women are more comfortable with getting tests done regularly. Cases of prophylactic mastectomy are very few. As such this preventive measure is highly debatable. This incident will certainly have a positive impact on women all over the world.”
Ways to prevent cancer n Treat breast and ovarian cancer. n Prevent the manifestation: Opt for prophylactic mastectomy and/ or removal of ovaries. Chemical prevention is also an option. n Regular check-ups are a must: Monthly self-examination can go a long way in nipping cancer in the bud. Chemical examination should be done once in six months. Mammography is recommended once a year. n Identify relatives who can be at risk of cancer: Each offspring will be at a 50 per cent risk of cancer if one or both the parents have the faulty gene.

Ozone ‘hole’ finder dies
One in 10 South Africans HIV positive
Dr Joe Farman, the scientist renowned for helping identify the hole in the ozone layer, died at 82 on Saturday, the BBC reports.
CAPE TOWN: One in ten South Africans is HIV positive but AIDS-related deaths are falling as ramped-up treatment begins to have an impact, the country’s official statistics agency said Tuesday. Since 2004 South Africa has developed the world’s largest HIV treatment programme. New data indicate that the drive is working. The disease AROUND THE

will be responsible for 32 percent of all deaths this year. While still high, that is a dramatic fall from 48 percent in 2005. Average life expectancy has also increased to 59.6 years from just 51.6 in 2005. But the scale of the problem is huge, with 5.3 million people living with HIV out of a population of nearly 53 million. AFP
LONDON: The British Antarctic Survey scientist Joe Farman, who helped identify the “hole” in the ozone layer over the southern pole, has died, reported the BBC. Dr Farman published the discovery with Brian Gardiner and Jon Shanklin in the journal Nature in 1985.
The research prompted the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement that controls chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) production across the globe. Dr Farman, who received many awards, passed away on Saturday aged 82. Prof Alan Rodger, interim director of the British Antarctic

Aboriginal adoption plans spark new fears Plans of aboriginal adoption might just lead to another ‘stolen generation’, fear the authorities. AROUND THE
WORLD
SYDNEY: Politicians in northern Australia said on Tuesday they were considering putting neglected Aboriginal children up for adoption, sparking fears of a new “stolen generation”. Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles, said he was advocating the plan on a case-by-case basis to protect
vulnerable children. Giles said Aboriginal children are often in highrisk situations and fearful of going home to households awash with alcohol and violence, but insisted there would be no mass grab of youngsters. Some Aboriginal advocates said they were deeply concerned at any adoption proposal amid fears of another “stolen generation” — children who were taken from their families and placed under foster care with white families or institutions under a misguided policy which ended only in the early 1970s. Northern Territory Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation spokeswomen Vicki Lee Knowles told the ABC,”I think he’s misinformed about the consequences of the impacts of removing those children. But within an Aboriginal family... the loss of culture, land and language has a long-term impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of those children who are removed.” AFP
Survey (BAS), said: “Joe was an excellent physicist and his work changed the way that we view the natural world. “After making the discovery of the ozone hole he became an energetic ambassador for our planet.” Speaking to BBC News on the 25th anniversary of the reporting of the hole, Dr Farman said the environment was still being damaged in many ways. He criticised politicians for failing to lead on issues like climate change and said it was “damned stupid” to keep increasing emissions of CO2 when it was known to be a warming gas. But he also criticised some of the ways in which climate science was being conducted. After graduating from Cambridge University, Dr Farman was appointed as a scientific officer at the Falkland Islands Dependency Survey, the
predecessor of BAS, in 1956. He became head of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey Physics Unit at the University of Edinburgh in 1969 and returned to BAS in Cambridge as head of the physics section in 1976. It was then that he turned his attention to Antarctic ozone monitoring. Dr Farman received many AROUND THE

awards in recognition of his discovery, including the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) Environment Medal, the Chree Medal and Prize, membership of the Global 500 Roll of Honour, an OBE in 1988 and a CBE in the New Year Honours 2000. His last research trip to Antarctica was in 1990, just before he retired.

POLITICS
‘Naidu is ahead of his time’ While many party stalwarts deserted Naidu, one man stood by him all through; PL Srinivas. In an interview with Postnoon he swears that Naidu is on a comeback trail.
INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: You will not throw a blanket accusation on politicians as ‘all corrupt,’— at least after reading about the astounding saga of a political leader who has been a pathbreaker in education and social work. P L Srinivas, a blue-blooded Hyderabadi, is seen so naive in playing party politics that he earned a sobriquet, ‘Bhola Shankar.’ He plays value politics which is considered an outdated game now. But Srinivas says he has made his mark as an educationist trail blazer, and so he did not have to make fast buck in politics. P L Srinivas, aged 53, is an out-of-the ordinary politician who dared to kick a 26-yearlong association with the Congress after one of its biggies asked money to give ticket to him in 2004 General Elections. “I would have won the Secunderabad parliament seat as Congress candidate if I had obliged the leader distributing tickets. But the values I strongly believed in did not allow me to resort to corruption for securing a ticket,” recalls Srinivas. He also recalled when he made up his mind to join TDP, the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy made every possible effort to convince him by promising lucrative posts in

the Congress government. But it did not have any effect on Srinivas as he had already made up his mind to leave the Congress. Knowing him an honest politician, the TDP took him in and gave him party’s general secretary’s post in GHMC after shouldering many responsible positions in the party. He does not boast of a pedigree either. Born to a railway employee, Srinivas had little chances to rub shoulders with the high and mighty in politics. But he had the gift of the gab and evinced leadership qualities during student days. In 1978, he joined NSUI which paved the way for a political career.
AP’S PIONEER IN COMPUTER EDUCATION In 1982, he made his foray into educational field by opening a competitive exams coaching centre for the poor students and organised free coaching classes for them. Nobody had thought of it till then. Hundreds benefited from it. Again, it was PL who set up AP’s first computer training institute in 1982. He named it after his beloved leader Rajiv Gandhi as Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Computer Sciences and produced many software
professionals. It was in 1985 that his oratory skills came to the notice of Rajiv Gandhi. He was one of the eight NSUI candidates who secured Assembly tickets during the mid- term polls held that year. He got the ticket to contest from Sanathnagar Assembly constituency. But the ‘Bhola’ was not equal to the craftiness of his rival. He lost to the TDP candidate by a slight margin. In 1989 Assembly elections, PL Srinivas AROUND THE

women with the sole intention of providing education, sense of security and self-respect for women of the City. Since then, his educational institution produced over 22,000 women graduates. Most of these graduates are now placed across the world as scientists, pharmacists, lawyers, pilots, police officers, teachers and bureaucrats. His tryst with education reached another level when he started Akshara Vagdevi international school last year to educate children on global standards with nominal and affordable fees.
UNLUCKY AGAIN After joining TDP in 2004, PL Srinivas served the party in many positions from city general secretary to state secretary and now acting as state organising secretary. In recognition of his services, party president asked him to contest MLC elections under graduates quota in 2007. He lost it with a margin of just 400 votes. Setting an example for other politicians to follow, Srinivas, had sold off his residence to meet his election expenditure during the MLC elections. Srinivas is an unalloyed admirer of Naidu. “I have not seen another leader like him. He has the calibre, poise, prestige and abili t y, ”

Dutt, convicted in the 1993 bomb blasts case, told a designated TADA court in Mumbai on Tuesday that he is facing threat to life from fundamentalist groups and hence should be allowed to surrender before Yerwada jail instead of the special court. Judge GA Sanap has asked CBI to file a reply and posted the hearing for today. Dutt has been sentenced to five year jail term. He is supposed to surrender before jail authorities on May 16 to undergo his remaining jail term. He has already served one-and-a-halfyear jail term. Dutt filed the application in the TADA court, hours after the Supreme Court refused to grant him additional time to surrender for undergoing the remaining 42 months jail term in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Russia to expel American spy He was discovered with a large stash of cash and was trying to recruit a Russian as a spy. MOSCOW: Russia on Tuesday ordered the expulsion of an alleged American CIA agent working undercover at the US embassy who was discovered with a large stash of money trying to recruit a Russian agent. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB, ex-KGB) identified the man as Ryan C. Fogle -- third secretary of the political section of Washington’s embassy in Moscow -- and said he had been handed back to the embassy after his detention. The foreign ministry said it was summoning US ambassador Michael McFaul on Wednesday for an explanation and slammed Washington for what it described as “provocative acts in the spirit of the Cold War”. It declared Fogle to be persona non grata who had to return to the United States “as soon as possible” -- a complete contrast to the joint pledges for intelligence cooperation after the Boston bombings. KATHMANDU: The annual rush to the hills by villagers keen to harvest a rare aphrodisiac fungus dubbed "Himalayan Viagra" has emptied rural schools in Nepal and forced them to shut, a local official said Tuesday. Parents, students and even teachers have left home in pursuit of "yarchagumba", a highaltitude caterpillar fungus which is eagerly sought for its reputed sexual enhancement. "In this district alone, about 8,000 students have left school for the expedition," Prakash Subedi, an official at Jajarkot district education office, told AFP. "Without the students, there's no point running the school so we close them. Even the teachers go to collect it," Subedi said. Some schools might hold extra classes in the autumn so children's education does not suffer, he added.
Yarchagumba n Yarchagumba is a herb that grows in the pastures above 3,300 meters upto 4000 meters in the Himalayan regions of Nepal, Bhutan, India and Tibet. n This aphrodisiac fungus is an exceptional combination of a yellow caterpillar and a mushroom (fungus). n Yarchagumba, also known as the "Himalayan Viagra" or "Himalayan Gold" has high medicinal and commercial value. It is mainly used as a treatment for impotency in many countries.
Yarchagumba, which in Tibetan means "summer grass, winter worm," is produced when Cordyceps fungus spores attack a caterpillar larva underground, kill it and cause a mushroom to sprout out of its head. Nepalese villagers flock to high meadows each spring in search of the specimens. China and other Asian markets have huge appetites for the obscure fungus, pushing prices above $11,500 per pound (450 grams) and putting its value somewhere between silver and gold. "We urge the parents not to take their children along with them," Subedi said, adding that parents typically ignore the plea because children can earn up to 100,000 rupees ($1,140) during the harvest. No definitive research has been published on the qualities of "Himalayan Viagra". But Chinese herbalists believe the fungus is an excellent balance of yin and yang, as it is both animal and vegetable, boosting sexual performance. Boiled in water to make tea, or added to soups and stews, it is claimed to cure a variety of ailments from fatigue to cancer. In recent years researchers have claimed that despite regulatory measures such as a tax imposed on harvesters to control the fungus population, supplies are declining, perhaps due to over-harvesting. ture hits 64 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius). At its peak, there could be swarms with between one and two thousand chirping critters per square yard (meter). Although cicadas are common around the world, this cyclical phenomenon happens only in the United States. Every 17 years, these “periodical cicadas” mature, mate, lay eggs and die in a deafening concerto. Their offspring — which won’t be seen again for another 17 years — burrow into the ground, eight inches (20 centimeters) deep, where they will feed on the sap from roots until their day in the sun arrives. The broods — there are 15 of them — are classified by Roman numeral. Most are on a 17-year cycle, though three reproduce every 13 years and the cycles are staggered, meaning that at least one of the broods hatches each year. But not all broods are created equal and “Brood II” is a big one. Over the next few weeks, they will emerge and launch a reproductive orgy when the larvae split their skins and mature into adult form, explained University of Maryland entomologist Michael Raupp. “Then they’ll scramble in a flight to the treetops. The males will begin to court the females. They will mate,” he added.

"There will be more sustainable competition and cost savings as a result of the alliance, as well as a commitment that the two airline applicants will maintain the number of seats that are operated across the Tasman," he said.

ancer campaigners cheered Angelina Jolie for going public Tuesday about her double mastectomy, but warned women against rushing out to be tested for the gene mutation that threatened her life. Not only is the BRCA1 mutation rare in the overall female population, they said, but it is also expensive to test for at a US laboratory that controversially claims patent rights to the gene. “We don’t want everybody to go out and say, ‘I want this test’,” Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, said. “We want people to think about what their family history is, and to talk to their doctor” who might refer them to a genetic counsellor to determine if testing is necessary, Brawley said. “Women who have firstdegree relatives — that is a sister or a mother — who had breast or ovarian cancer at a young age should especially have these conversations,” he said. “All women should not be tested for this gene. It is not that common,” said Los Angelesbased surgeon, author, breast cancer researcher and leukemia survivor Susan Love. “The people who should consider being tested are the ones who have had a lot of breast or ovarian cancer in their families,” she told CNN. In Jolie’s case, the mother of the 37-year-old Oscar-winning actress and UN humanitarian activist — star of such action films as Salt and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56. f all the acronyms that Indian public associate with investigation, CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) is the most common. However, if its functioning is anything to go by, the motto ‘Industry, Impartiality, Integrity’ would be one of the longestrunning jokes in the history of the country. Over the decades, the agency that was originally established to tackle corruption and serious crimes meriting attention of the Central government has been turned into a tool of political coercion and vendetta. Any political leader, business house and organisation that fell foul of the ruling establishment have learned this the hard way. Once the era of coalitions began at the Centre, the CBI has been used extensively for armtwisting allies and opponents. There is hardly any major party that has not borne the brunt of this. One day you find the CBI filing cases, chargesheets and talking about ‘clinching evidence’ against a political leader, but once he/she yields to the demands of the Centre the process reverts to snail’s pace.
The investigative agency’s diligent efforts played a crucial role in the success of the ‘carrot and stick’ policy that has made Lalu Prasad Yadav of RJD, Mayawati of BSP, Jayalalithaa of AIADMK and Mulayam Singh Yadav of the SP die-hard supporters of the Congress-led government at the Centre. “It’s not easy to fight with the government. It has a thousand hands and can use the CBI and put one in jail,” said Mulayam recently. A disproportionate assets case against him and his son has been under investigation by the CBI since 2007 — and he has been a loyal UPA fan ever since. The exemption to the CBI from the Right to Information (RTI) Act has made it virtually impossible for any independent verification of the legality in its manner of functioning. Angered by the CBI allowing the PMO and law ministry to make changes to its investigation report on the infamous ‘Coalgate’ scam, the Supreme Court admonished the country’s premier investigating agency for acting shamelessly as a ‘caged parrot’ that repeats after its master — the Central government. At least two former CBI directors have conceded in interviews that the agency was subject to political influence. Former CBI chief Joginder Singh
has gone on the record to say that he was forced out after refusing to be the government’s stick in the Fodder Scam. And the current chief Ranjit Sinha, too, has admitted that autonomy does not exist for the agency. Embarrassed by the stinging observations of the Supreme Court, the government has formed a group of ministers (GoM) to draft a law to free the caged parrot. One can’t help but
be cynical considering the huge number of GoMs and EGoMs and their dismal record of delivering the goods. An investigating agency that can function independent of political control is the need of the hour. Unless the Aegean Stables of the CBI is not cleansed of the political filth accumulated over the decades, there is no hope for this country.
EDITORIALS Stop this police barbarism
U
nless judiciary takes a hard look at the abuse of women for any pretext, there is no hope for this country. We have moral polices galore and over and above we have legal police who abuse and beat up a hapless woman. The Gaziabad incident that benumbed the collective conscious of this country must be viewed with all seriousness by the bosses of cops and judiciary. If anyone violates a law he or she can be booked and allow the law to take its course. Instead, when a police woman herself acts like a thug and beat up a woman, it is time we booked the aggression without compunction. What about the man who was drinking with her in the car? Does the sky falls if a woman had a peg or two? This is a free country and the way the policemen behave with women is reprehensible. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. India has already earned a nasty image in the eye of the world with the infamous rape and killing of a woman in Delhi. But that did not deter similar incidents elsewhere. We do not want the moral polices and legal polices that behave worse than barbarians.

Blending of two worlds Friday sees the release of The Reluctant Fundamentalist, acclaimed director Mira Nair’s new film. Equally adept at making stories based in India and Hollywood, we look through her filmography and the themes she deals with. EA ABHISHEK feedback@postnoon.com

n the international film circuits Indian cinema is invariably perceived as an equivalent of Bollywood and written off completely due to the over-the-top drama and unwanted song and dance sequences that have become a constant entity in the films that the industry has produced post the Golden era —1960s. Mira Nair on the other hand has created a niche for herself by producing Indian content that is both critically acclaimed and commercially successful in the West. Very interestingly she has majorly produced and marketed her films outside India. Salaam Bombay (1988) was Mira Nair’s first major feature film release, it is considered to be an all-time classic today. That was the very foundation of Nair’s style of filmmaking and her approach towards cinema. Numerous films have been made on the slums and street dwellers of Bombay including the recent Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire by Danny Boyle, but the manner in which Nair portrayed Bombay and its street-dwellers is unmatched till date. The fact that Nair chose to use actual streetdwellers rather than seasoned actors and also chose to shoot at real locations ended up adding to the realism that defines the film. Salaam Bombay
began Nair’s tryst with awards and international acclaim, the film won her the prestigious Golden Camera award at the Cannes Film Festival and also an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Film category among various other awards at film festival circuits. Salaam Bombay was followed by the rather controversial sexually explicit film titled Kamasutra (1996), the film was banned in India because of the explicit content and the fact that Nair had deceived Indian officials during the making of the film regarding the content that she was shooting. This film reflected Nair’s commitment and calibre as a filmmaker who would go to every possible extent to get her work done the way she wants it. Nair has always been appreciated for the unconventional subjects she

graphical film on Amelia Earhart in Amelia (2009), Mira Nair has done it all. She has worked with International stars like Denzel Washington, Hillary Swank, Resse Witherspoon and acclaimed Indian talents like Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, Tabu etc. The reason why Nair’s films are acclaimed abroad is because of the quality of content. The drama in her films is always situational, the characters are realistic and the visuals have a certain texture and finesse that is at par with those produced in Hollywood. India, as a country, has never completely accepted filmmakers like Nair or her contemporaries like Deepa Mehta because of the intolerance here when it comes to freedom of art and expression. Nair has found a market for herself in the West where she co-produces her films with international producers, the banner under which she has released most of her work is called Mirabai films. The Reluctant Fundamentalist is Nair’s next feature film releasing this Friday in India. The film is said to be an intense geo-political thriller based on Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid’s bestseller novel by the same name. Like every other Mira Nair film even this one is expected to leave a definite impact on her audiences across the globe.

oming to terms with the fact that a member in the family is suffering from dementia or even Alzheimer’s is a difficult process. For most, it becomes stressful and they find avoidance of the issue to be a way out. Some seek outside help. It’s important to give yourself some time and to reach out for help. You’ll no doubt be worried about how your loved one will change, how you’ll keep him or her comfortable, and how much your life will change. You are also likely to experience emotions such as anger, grief and shock. The more support you have, the better you will be able to help your loved one. That’s
where caretakers step in. People with dementia from conditions such as Alzheimer’s and related diseases have a progressive brain disorder that makes it more and more difficult for them to remember things, think clearly, communicate with others, or take care of themselves. In addition, dementia can cause mood swings and even change a person’s personality and behaviour. Indraneel Sahay, a lawyer, was shattered to know that his mum was suffering from dementia three years ago; she died last month. She had become increasingly withdrawn and often had a blank expression on her face. She began behaving in such a manner after his father’s death. “At first I put it down to loneliness, but later on her bouts of talking to herself, forgetting my name or where we lived made me sit up and notice. Neither my wife nor I

Then she became bed-ridden, other cognitive challenges began to manifest themselves and then the memory loss and incontinence. We were not able to handle it at all. A caretaker we had employed made life a bit easier for us. She kept us in the loop, about her medicines, her needs, check-ups and more. She basically kept mum out of hospitals. Though I was not able to provide her the best care, I made sure she did not suffer much either.”

Albinism affects production of melanin, the pigment that colours skin, hair and eyes. People with albinism have a reduced amount of melanin or no melanin at all. Depending on the amount of melanin a person has, they may have very pale hair, skin and eyes, but some may have brown or ginger hair and skin that can tan. And the care given was not according to their condition. That’s when I decided to become a caregiver.” “You can best meet these challenges with patience and compassion. It also helps to not take things personally,” Mary adds. Nikisha Pant’s 70-year-old uncle, depressed after his wife’s death, had become withdrawn. He even used to call up relatives and abuse them. A check-up revealed he was bordering on dementia. He had not been working either for a long time. While the family tried to shower him with care, his condition got the

Mary caters to such people. “We cannot change the condition, so we have to adapt to it. As a caretaker, I try and notice and observe the patient’s behaviour and needs so I can communicate it to the family as well. Patience is also a key factor. Sitting cooped up and the meds can make them restless and can trigger violent behaviour, so I try and get them to exercise as well. Technology DON’T KILL THE MESSENGER
The end of BlackBerry? Blackberry messenger will soon be available for download on Android and iOS. Has the company given up? NT BALANARAYAN balanarayan.nt@postnoon
I
n January 2007, Steve Jobs stood before hundreds of Apple enthusiasts and listed out the top selling smartphones in the US market then. All of them — Moto Q, BlackBerry Pearl, Palm Treo and Nokia E62 — sported physical QWERTY keyboards and were quite popular among businessmen and techies. Then he showed the world a slab of glass wrapped in an aluminium casing which he called iPhone. That device went ahead and changed the world of smartphones and with it the fate of BlackBerry, then known as Research in Motion. All those companies that were part of the list have fallen, like many giants before them. Motorola was bought over by Google in a sale that many claim was mostly for the patents the company had built up over the years. Palm was taken over by HP, which finally gave up on the operating system and mobile phones after spending billions on it. Nokia finally ditched their inhouse operating system and put all their money on the Windows operating system to prevent death by irrelevancy. The last company of the lot, BlackBerry, yesterday went ahead and wrote their own obituary or are they just reinventing themselves? The company announced late on Tuesday that BBM messenger will soon be available for all platforms including Android and iOS within a few months. With this decision the company had nullified the sole advantage the company had over the others — a highly secure messenger system that worked seamlessly and was easy to set up. Though Blackberry became synonymous with its devices over the years, it has always been the messenger that made the company so popular among early adopters and business folks. The technology that is used in BBM goes back to the ‘90s when pagers were all the rage. RIM was the first

company to come out with a pager that had a keyboard and could send short text messages to others using the service. However, as the mobile phone market grew, the company built a 'smartphone' around this technology. This new device could receive and send emails from Microsoft's exchange server or via the company's own solution and oh, it still offered a secure BBM service for a small monthly fee. BBM was relevant back then as people were still dependent on bleeping blooping modems to connect to the Internet and the fastest speeds back then were slower than what we get in our mobile phones these days. At a time like that Internet wasn't reliable enough for communication, but RIM offered a guarantee that the message will be delivered, each email will be sent. But all that changed with the launch of the iPhone as it was soon followed by Android, an operating system launched by a small company Google had just bought. The touch screen devices with neat graphics and intuitive interface caught the attention of the public which quickly started ditching keyboards for these new breed of smartphones. Companies like Nokia and RIM looked at the market from the sidelines, still in denial. These giants ultimately woke up two years later, but by
With revenue from the sale of devices dwindling, BlackBerry needs to find new sources of revenue and they believe BBM is that. then they had lost the customers, developers and investors. The share price of both these companies tanked in stock market and the half-hearted touchscreen phones they launched, that still ran on their legacy operating system, failed to garner any attention. Nokia decided to push the restart button and go with Windows operating system while RIM bought QNX and started creating a new operating system from scratch. The resulting OS — BlackBerry 10 — hasn't done that great in the market, which brings the company to the spot it is in now. With revenue from the sale of devices dwindling, the company needs to find new sources of revenue and they

Technically, you can actually pre-order one now if you sign up on Nvidia's “notify me” webpage. Shield runs stock Android 4.2.1 on a brandnew Tegra 4 processor with 2GB of RAM, an incredibly sharp 720p display, tuned bass reflex drivers for audio, a GPS chip, and a miniHDMI output that outputs 4K video. The device looks like an Xbox controller with a screen attached and is expected to be popular with gamers.
believe BBM is just that. A lot of smartphone users now have used the company's devices at some point and BlackBerry hopes that they will remember how good the service was. However, times have changed, do we really need BBM when we can contact them via Whatsapp or Viber, which are free by the way? Do we still need BBM now that we have chatting clients that offer a fast, secure channel for contacting people? This announcement also raises some interesting questions, especially regarding the cost factor involved. BlackBerry users need to pay a monthly fee to use the chatting service, but what about users on iOS and Android? Will they use it if they have to pay for it — I doubt. However, if the company makes it free for these platforms, won't they have to do the same for BlackBerry users too? This means the company can kiss dreams of getting revenue from the service good bye. In fact, it's about time they stopped trying to sell anything. They should instead start looking around for companies that are interested in buying them over, in parts or as a whole for the patents they have piled up or for the engineers they have at their disposal. BlackBerry is dead, well almost, so let's auction the best parts off before the whole body starts to rot.
Microsoft is rolling out Gchat support within outlook.com according to a new blog post made by the email team there. The company had rebranded and redesigned their email offering last year and last month redirected all Hotmail users to Outlook.com. The service already let you chat with Facebook friends and this new feature is expected to make it more tempting for those who wanted to shift to Microsoft’s offering. The same integration will be available in ‘People’ app found in Windows 8 mobile phones as well.
What comes after 8? Windows Blue, the forthcoming update to Windows 8 that addresses several issues public had about the OS will release as Windows 8.1. The upgrade will be free and available from the home screen when it launches, while a preview version will be opened up to the public on June 26 at the beginning of Build 2013. Unfortunately, we don’t have a any details on the release date. As anticipated, the Windows 8.1 update will come to both the full version of the OS as well as the ARM-friendly RT. While we haven't officially seen any sub-10inch slates announced yet, it's been rumored that 8.1 would enable smaller devices.

Talking about the film’s success, Naga Chaitanya said, “This is like a second big break in my career so far. The response has been good so far and I hope that it continues like that for the next few days. With this film, I believe I have shed my image as a lover boy and I’ll do more mass entertainers in future as well. Sunil has been very supportive right from the days of Josh. I thank the audience for making the film a big hit.” Naga Chaitanya
and Sunil were seen as siblings in the film. Sunil, who played the role of a cop, said, “My characterisation in this film had two different shades. Although the director increased my role, when compared to the original version Vettai, Naga Chaitanya had no objection to it. I am grateful for his support. He has proved that he can handle mass entertainers with ease with this film and he was extremely good in the action sequences. Recently, when Lingusamy saw Tadakha, he couldn’t stop raving about how well Kishore had remade it in Telugu. Thaman’s music was another big asset for the film.” After Tadakha, Naga Chaitanya’s next film is Manam, which will go on floors in June. Vikram Kumar will direct this film.

W
hat happens when 11 disparate styles of filmmaking are fused together and structured to create a larger style and story? You might be familiar with anthology films where filmmakers chip in with short films strung together by a theme. But for the first time, 11 filmmakers from different parts of India have come together for a neverseen-before cinematic experience as they collaborate on one single film about one filmmaker. he 11th Hour charity event, benefiting environmental and wildlife conservation efforts, saw 13 individual artist records broken. The 11th Hour charity auction benefiting the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation’s environmental and wildlife conservation efforts reportedly brought in a staggering $35 million-plus Monday night. DiCaprio, who is currently starring in The Great Gatsby, teamed up with Christie’s to cohost what the auction house’s Brett Gorvy recently called “the most important environmental charity ever staged.” Thirty-three works by contemporary artists including Ed Ruscha, Julian Schnabel, Banksy, Elizabeth Peyton, Takashi Murakami and Raymond Pettibon were on the block, with many fetching record prices. According to Christie’s Twitter feed, the event saw 13 world auction records for individual artists, including Mark Grotjahn’s Untitled (which sold for $6.51 million), Sterling Ruby’s SP231 ($1.785 million), Pettibon’s No Title (The Lower Half...) ($1.575 million), Robert Longo’s Untitled (Leo) ($1.575 million) and Peyton’s Leonardo ($1.05 million). Among the stars in attendance were DiCaprio’s Gatsby co-star and close friend Tobey Maguire, who put in the winning bid for Sergej Jensen’s Untitled ($262,500, another artist record). Bradley Cooper, Mark Ruffalo and Salma Hayek also were at the auction. Art Market Monitor reported that a total of $35 millionplus was raised from the event, nearly double the $18 million that organisers were aiming to raise. The money raised will be earmarked for conservation projects, selected by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, that protect key ocean-and land-based ecosystems as well as to engage local communities to protect their natural resources.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

In fact, it can be an empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger and us stronger.” “[She traveled] during Stage 2,” said Pitt. “Literally it was just weeks after she’d had truly major surgery.” As for how the experience affected their six children, Pitt explained that he and Jolie devised a way to make their mother’s recovery seem less scary. “We set up our own little postop recovery that became pretty fun,” he told USA Today. “You make an adventure out of it.” Jolie made the announcement Monday in an op-ed piece for The New York Times. In the article, Jolie explained that she carries a gene that gives an estimated 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer.

NEW ZEALAND’S TOUR OF ENGLAND
BRIEFS
Teams seek Lord’s swing
Clarke backs self for twin trials
For both England and New Zealand, the raised seam of the English ball provides a challenge for batsmen used to flatter balls elsewhere in the world.
SYDNEY: Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke said Wednesday he was confident his troublesome back would not prevent him from leading Australia in the two Ashes series against England this year. Clarke has managed the back problem since he was first diagnosed with a degenerative condition aged 17, but it forced him out of the fourth Test against India in March when the tourists went down 4-0. The 32-year-old, who struggled with a hamstring injury through the Australian summer, underlined the importance of his preparations with the Champions Trophy looming next month. “I’m confident it will be no different to how it has been throughout my career,” Clarke told reporters. “I’ve managed to play 90-odd Test matches and only missed one through my career so that’s a big part of why preparation is so important for me. AFP
JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse LONDON: It will be a case of familiarity having bred respect when England face New Zealand in the first of a two-Test series at Lord’s on Thursday. England could have been forgiven for thinking they had completed the hard part of their most recent tour programme when they wrapped up an impressive Test series win in India before Christmas. They then travelled to New Zealand for a threematch series against a home side still reeling from the botched way in which Ross
Taylor was stripped of the captaincy and replaced by Brendon McCullum. But the green pitches and easy haul of wickets against a New Zealand side who as recently as January had been bowled out for just 45 by South Africa in Cape Town did not materialise. Instead, a three-match series ended 0-0 with England clinging on, by just one wicket, to a draw in the finale at Auckland’s Eden Park in March where only a superb rearguard century by wicket-keeper Matt Prior denied the Black Caps a famous win. But at least they had regained a measure of pride
after their problems with the Proteas’ formidable pace attack. Early season Tests in English conditions often pose particular problems for touring sides, although overcast skies are not exactly unknown in New Zealand. However, the raised seam of the English Duke ball provides an additional challenge for batsmen used to flatter balls elsewhere in the world. Left-armers Trent Boult and Neil Wagner proved a handful for England’s batsmen in New Zealand and now Alastair Cook, the England captain, will look to his side to respond in
kind. England seam-bowling all-rounder Stuart Broad is well aware of his skipper’s requirements, saying: “Regardless of what New Zealand did as a bowling unit, we didn’t swing the ball. “So it needs to be looked at, and we have looked at it. We know we can bowl a lot better than in New Zealand.” Discipline too would be key, according to Broad, with England missing “Regardless of whether you are moving the ball, you can still put six balls in the over into the right area - and we probably didn’t do that as a unit in New Zealand,” said the all-rounder.
BOXING
Haye pulls out of comeback fight LONDON: David Haye’s hopes of re-establishing himself as a heavyweight title contender suffered a setback on Tuesday after the former WBA champion withdrew on Tuesday from a bout next month with Manuel Charr because of a injury to his hand. British boxer Haye was set to fight for the first time in nearly a year at the Manchester Arena in northern England on June 29 against an opponent whose only professional loss came when he was controversially stopped because of a cut to his right eye in the fourth round by WBC champion Vitali Klitschko last year. But after injuring his left hand on Sunday, the 32-yearold announced Tuesday that the contest had been postponed. This setback damaged Haye’s hopes facing either one of brothers Vitali or
Wladimir Klitschko, who hold all of the recognised world titles in the heavyweight division. “I’m absolutely gutted to have to pull out of this fight
on June 29,” the former unified cruiserweight champion said in a statement. “I pick up injuries now and again in training and sometimes carry them into
fights, but this was one I simply couldn’t recover from in time. I need to rest it up for at least four weeks,” he added. “I apologise to Manuel Charr and to everybody involved with the promotion. But most of all I want to say sorry to the thousands of fans who bought tickets to the fight. I felt it was important to let them know about the cancellation as soon as possible, so they can now make other plans. “As soon as I am told I can resume full training, my loyal fans will be the first to know,” the boxer went on to add. Haye pulled out of a planned bout with Wladimir Klitschko with a back complaint in 2009 and when they did meet two years Haye infamously cited a toe injury as the reason why the Ukrainian cruised to a unanimous decision win in Hamburg. US, Russia, Iran unite to save Wrestling NEW YORK: US, Iran and Russia on Tuesday forged an unlikely heavyweight alliance to keep the ancient sport of wrestling in the Olympic Games. While political differences between the three are deep, the national teams from the three wrestling superpowers will grapple with each other in New York’s Grand Central Station railway terminal on Wednesday to back the campaign. Wrestling has been in shock since the IOC announced in February that it wanted the sport ejected for the 2020 Games. There were complaints that the sport, where a broken nose or a cauliflower ear can be a badge of honor, is too macho, too complicated and not attractive to television audiences. But after initial hunger strikes by coaches and Olympic champions sending back their medals in protest, wrestling is fighting back. The bouts between the US, Iranian and Russian teams in New York on Wednesday and Sunday in Los Angeles are part of a new offensive to make the sport more attractive. AFP

Ecclestone facing bribery charges: report BERLIN: Formula One mogul Bernie Ecclestone faces charges in Germany relating to a bribery case, the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported Tuesday. According to the paper, the charge sheet is still to be translated into English before being transmitted to Ecclestone and his lawyers. Last autumn, Ecclestone said he was prepared to cooperate with public prosecutors in Germany in order to avoid prosecution after a German court had in June sentenced the former chief risk officer for state-owned bank BayernLB to eight-and-a-
half years in prison for receiving tens of millions of euros (dollars) in bribes from him. The Munich regional court found 54-year-old Gerhard Gribkowsky guilty of taking $44 million in bribes and failing to pay tax on the money. Gribkowsky admitted receiving the money from Ecclestone in 2006 and 2007 in connection with the sale of Formula One rights to CVC, the private equity investor which owns most of the multi billiondollar sport. In 2002, BayernLB had acquired the rights to

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: The Indiana Pacers are on the brink of advancing to the NBA semi-finals after beating New York 93-82 Tuesday, behind 26 points from George Hill and a dominant team rebounding performance. Paul George finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Pacers who seized a 3-1 stranglehold lead and can now wrap up the secondround series with a win Thursday at Madison Square Garden. "We are making it tough for them," Hill said. "We wanted to play with physicality and don't give them any easy baskets". Indiana displayed why they are the league's top rebounding team as they have outrebounded New York 188-142 in the series and 54-36 on Tuesday night. David West finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Roy Hibbert grabbed 11 rebounds while Lance Stephenson chipped in with 13 points for Indiana, who are a perfect 5-0 at home in the postseason.

Hibbert also guarded the paint effectively by making three blocked shots. "Everybody's all tied together on this team," George said. The Memphis Grizzlies are the only other team not lose on their home floor during these playoffs. Carmelo Anthony continued his
disappearing act Tuesday as the Knicks star failed to score a single point in the fourth quarter of game four and fouled out with two minutes left in regulation. Anthony, who didn't make a field goal in the final quarter of game three, finished with 24 points on nine-of-23 shooting. AFP

"At Long Beach it was the perfect race. No one made a mistake and no bad luck at all and Brazil was one of the most exciting races we ever had. I was obviously disappointed being second, but still it's a great satisfaction. To be able to be leading a championship after Brazil is an extra bonus for me." AFP
GIRO D'ITALIA
Wiggins loses more time ALTOPIANO DEL MONTASIO , ITALY: Rigoberto Uran soloed to victory in the hilly 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday, as his Sky team leader and race favourite Bradley Wiggins lost more time to race leader Vincenzo Nibali. Uran attacked on his own before the final 4.4km climb to the summit finish of Altopiano del Montasio in what appeared to be a tactic designed to put the pressure on Nibali's Astana team. However, Nibali and fellow victory contender Cadel Evans of Australia ultimately responded in positive fashion, upping the pace in the final few kilometres to leave Wiggins, the Tour de France champion, trailing by over 30secs. Neither won the stage but Nibali and Evans came over the finish line of the 167km race, which began in Cordenons in the extreme northeast of Italy, 31secs behind Colombian Uran. Wiggins arrived 37sec later, meaning the Englishman is now fourth overall at 2min 05sec behind Nibali. Evans is second overall only 41secs behind Nibali and must now be considered the Italian's only real rival in a race which, given Wiggins' performances in the past week, seems out of reach for the 2012 Tour de France champion. Nibali said afterwards: "Sky tried to isolate me to attack me.... but I managed to gain a few important seconds on Scarponi and the others." AFP

Djokovic starts campaign with win ROME: Two-tme Rome masters champion Novak Djokovic began his campaign for a hattrick trophy with a 70-minute, 62, 6-3 win over Albert Montanes which was wrapped up with an ace. The Serb was all smiles as he got the job done in his secondround start after a bye after losing a week ago in his opening
match in Madrid to Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian threat was knocked out earlier by French ninth seed Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4. Rafael Nadal began building for what he hopes will be a lucky seventh title at the Foro Italico after winning Madrid, his fifth title of a season which only began for him in February as he
returned following seven months of knee injury absence. "It's a little different here with the (lower) altitude. Playing three Masters 1000s (form Monte Carlo a month ago) is difficult when you are in the final rounds. "There is no time to prepare the next tournament. I arrived on Monday and I'm here to try my best." Djokovic wasted no time in
his victory as he tries to finally rid himself of ankle problems which have bothered him for a month. The top seed improved to 23-4 in Rome, where he won 2008 and 2011 titles. In first-round play, Djokovic's fellow Serb Viktor Troicki spoiled the possibility of a Nadal rematch with Lukas Rosol as he beat the Czech 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. AFP

ajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings can breathe easy now as these teams have made it to the play-offs. But the Royals and the Mumbai sides would still battle it out till the last possible point when they clash today in Mumbai, in their bid to make it to the top two spots on the table (as the top two sides get an extra chance to make it to the finals). Although both the teams are tied on 20 points each, Mumbai Indians are placed higher than the Rajasthan Royals because of the difference in their net runrate. the playoffs is proof of that fact. All the players, including the uncapped players like Sanju Samson have chipped in at regular intervals and this has seen the team sail to safety even in tough situations, most of the time. Meanwhile, Mumbai have had a brilliant run at home. They are a formidable side on paper and their presence among the top four has only strengthened the fact that they can perform well in reality too. The manner in which they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, in their previous match, was commendable and Kieron Pollard who seemed to have lacked in his performance throughout this season, made up for it all, against the Hyderabad side. While a victory or defeat would not alter the order of the table much, it would still be a match to watch out for as the giants take on each other in a encounter where a lot of hard hitting is expected.

une have been a big disappointment in this season of the IPL as they have won a paltry two matches from the 14 encounters they have played. While a victory of defeat would not make much of a difference to the Pune Warriors India, They would play for pride and maybe even turnout to be party spoilers for the Kolkata Knight Riders when the two sides clash today in Ranchi. Kolkata, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kings XI Punjab still have a glimmer of hope in making it to the playoffs. While all their chances also depends on the way Sunrisers Hyderabad perform, from their end they would try their best to do all they can to enter the next
KKR VS PWI AT 4PM ON SET MAX stage of the tournament. However, a loss today will bring the curtains down on the hopes of the Knights. Thought the KKR side are down, yet they are still not out and completely believe that they have the potential of winning their remaining matches. The side is positive and skipper Gautam Gambhir believes that their chances are still bright. With every match making a difference, it remains to be seen if Kolkata Knight Riders manage to hold on to that glimmer of hope or will the Pune side manage to salvage their pride.

PLATT LEAVES CITY AFTER MANCINI SACKING
Manchester City assistant manager David Platt has left the club just a day after Roberto Mancini was sacked, the English Premier League side announced Tuesday. Mancini was sacked Monday after a trophy-less season for City was confirmed by their shock FA Cup Final loss to Wigan.

Gunners shoot Wigan down, down, down

STEVEN GRIFFITHS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Wigan were relegated from the Premier League just three days after their FA Cup final triumph as Arsenal seized control of the race to finish in the top four with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday. Roberto Martinez's side had arrived at the Emirates Stadium hopeful that their dramatic upset against Manchester City would prove the springboard for another great escape in the relegation battle.
But Arsenal desperately needed the points as well as they try to qualify for the Champions League and the Gunners romped home thanks to a brace from Lukas Podolski and strikes from Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey. Shaun Maloney had given Wigan hope with a first half equaliser, but the Latics, running on fumes after their Wembley heroics, will experience the unique anguish of becoming the first side to win the FA Cup and be relegated in the same season. "It is really disappointing,"
Martinez said. "I never expected this to happen. The group of players we have are an incredible bunch and we didn't deserve this. "It's a tough day, but we have had incredible eight years in the Premier League." While Wigan, four points behind Sunderland with one game left, will be back in the second tier for the first time since 2005, Arsene Wenger's team are on course to play in the Champions League for a 16th consecutive season. They had fallen two points behind Tottenham after their north London rivals won at Stoke, but now head to Newcastle on Sunday knowing another win will guarantee a top four finish. They would not even need three points if Tottenham fail to beat Sunderland at White Hart Lane. Wenger added: "We were a bit edgy after conceding, but when we scored the second it was a massive blow for Wigan. "They never recovered and we comfortably scored two more. "It is sad they go down because they play good football with intelligent players."
MANCHESTER: Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko cheered managerless Manchester City in the wake of Roberto Mancini's sacking as the Argentina and Bosnia strikers scored in a 2-0 win over relegated Reading at Madejski Stadium. Aguero bagged the first five minutes before the break and substitute Dzeko added a second in the 88th minute as caretaker boss Brian Kidd guided his second-placed side to victory a day after Mancini was fired. Speculation continues to mount over his successor with Malaga's Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini the redhot favourite for the post. Alongside the speculation over who would take over from Mancini, another talking point surrounding
City was the absence of their skipper Vincent Kompany, said to be suffering from fatigue. The beaten FA Cup finalists made four changes to their starting XI with Micah Richards replacing Kompany as skipper. Also in defence Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott came in for Pablo Zabaleta and Matija Nastasic while James Milner filled in for Samir Nasri. Royals' manager Nigel Adkins had a much easier task picking his side and named the same team that beat Fulham 4-2 last time out for his first win in charge of the club. From the outset it was second-placed City in the driving seat as they had a number of early chances.

AMSTERDAM : Chelsea's preparations for the Europa League final against Benfica were dealt a blow on Tuesday when manager Rafael Benitez revealed that Belgian forward Eden Hazard will miss the game with a hamstring injury. Hazard, one of the revelations of Chelsea's sea-
son, hurt himself during his side's 2-1 win at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday. He travelled to Amsterdam with his teammates on Tuesday, along with club captain John Terry, who is a doubt with an ankle complaint, but Benitez said he would not feature in Wednesday's game. "Hazard will not be available," Benitez said at
Tuesday's pre-game press conference. "John, we will try and see how he feels. But we will decide tomorrow." Were John Terry to be declared unavailable, it would be the second time in two seasons that he has been forced to miss a major European final, after he sat out last year's Champions League triumph against Bayern Munich due to suspension.
