ith uber-luxury and utter poverty staring each other in the face and jostling for space, Hyderabad is fast becoming a City of shocking contrasts. But nowhere is this perhaps more obvious than in Film Nagar, with its brochure-perfect bungalows, exclusive gated communities and sprawling hirises. Peer closely behind this massive facade however and the road drops sharply to reveal its dark underbelly — a low-lying slum settlement near Shaikpet, known as BJR Nagar. The 10,000 households in the area are lacking for many things, but most noticeably, health care. Six

Come rains and the area turns into a death trap. If the hospital itself is making us sick, where should we go for treatment? Venkataramana Rao, resident years ago, an Urban Health Post (UHP) was constructed in BJR Nagar, Shaikpet, bringing relief to 10,000 families (households) in the slum settlement that previously had no access to any form of healthcare. For one year, it functioned optimally, providing crucial facilities like general medicine, emergency first-aid, immunisation, birth control, and most importantly, maternity care, including deliveries. Today, residents cringe every time they pass the UHP. What was once a ray of hope for the community is now a breeding ground for dangerous diseases. Thanks to the ubiquitous development of surrounding areas like Film Nagar and Shaikpet, every house, commercial complex and public area has a drainage line heading down towards

the settlement, thereby leading to the facility, lying deserted and submerged to its roof in sewage water for the past five years. “Initially when we saw water seep in, we didn't worry so much, because back then it was still containable. But then in the next four-five months, things got worse. There was drainage water everywhere and a terrible smell; [there were] problems like electric outages, insects and rodents, weeds growing everywhere. You couldn't treat anyone there anymore,” says Madhavi, a multi-purpose health associate who's been in the Afzal Sagar UHP since its inception. Every man, woman and child in the area was then directed to a small tworoom flat in the neighbourhood, rented by the government, out of which the UHP now operates. But severe space constraints mean that the UHP now only offer a fraction of the services it once did. There is no provision for deliveries (pregnant women are now forced to travel all the way to Nilofer Hospital for deliveries) and queues spill out onto the road on Wednesdays when they hold their immunisation drives. Residents who had become heavily dependent on the health care post have most felt the pinch. “The new place is too small and can treat only women and children. What about us? We don't have the money to go to private clinics, but nobody has done anything to rectify the situation. We have complained to everybody possible,” laments Kondaiah, a farmer who came to settle in the area 22 years ago. Locals in the area are perhaps the only in Hyderabad to dread the onset of monsoons. “Come rains and the area turns into a death trap. Every year, there's a bout of malaria, dengue, typhoid and diseases that come as result of the open drain and the stagnant water bodies here and our children suffer the most. If the hospital itself is making us sick, where should we go for treatment?” asks another long-time resident of the area, Venkataramana Rao. Promises during local elections of restoring the make-shift hospital to its

original premises notwithstanding, status quo has prevailed. To make matters worse, any developmental efforts in the area have been curtailed, thanks to a tug-of-war between two GHMC corporators, allege locals. Narsingh Rao. “We petitioned on the issue numerous times. We even had the zonal inspector come down for an inspection of the hospital. A proposal was made. But it was delayed by them [Narsingh Rao] when they realised we'll get all the credit for it. But now it's all sorted; this time, it looks like it will happen,” says a confident Sudhaker. “Irrespective of whose

constituency it is, there was a problem and so we were trying to help fix it. We didn't try to delay anything. In fact, we submitted an estimation and a proposal two years ago. However, nothing has happened because of these petty issues,” counters Narsingh Rao. Territorial disputes between GHMC corporators and claims of token petitions are commonplace for anyone to take notice. But what is singularly alarming is that even the MLA of the area claims he's been unable to do anything to improve the condition of a single healthcare facility in his jurisdiction in the last five years. “We have raised this issue a number of times with the collector, the health minister and every department there is. Left with no options, we've approached the CM’s office and asked for the project to be included under the Indiramma Kalalu scheme two months ago, but we’ve not received a response so far,” admits Vishnuvardhan Reddy, the area MLA, who says his corporator will call a press meet and then hold a dharna, if the issue is not resolved this time around. But in the absence of a satisfactory response to the dismal state of affairs, ironically, it is he who asks the question at the heart of the matter. “If the combined might of two GHMC corporators and a MLA is not enough, what voice does a common voter have in this State?”

A busy season for Speaker This monsoon session, the AP Assembly Speaker will have his hands full with various political issues. INKESHAF AHMED

ahmed.m@postnoon.com

W

ith various suggestions to be made in the Monsoon session of the Assembly in May, the State may get a chance to witness some huge political manoeuvrings. June is likely to witness a series of political developments in the State. Interestingly, most of these developments will revolve around AP Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar, making him the busiest politician in the State as the second spell of the budget session of the House begins from June 10. This budget session is being held for the approval of the annual budget, following the meetings of standing committees that were formed to make suitable suggestions and recommendations to the proposed budget of the State government. The first and foremost thing

that Manohar is likely to be confronted with, ahead of the crucial budget session, is the issue of disqualification of 18 MLAs (nine of them from Congress) from the Assembly membership for resorting to anti-party activities, which including voting against the whips of their respective political parties during the no-confidence motion (NCM) held in April this year. If Manohar decides to dis-

qualify them, the State will witness a huge political manoeuvring, as political parties, especially YSR Congress, would press for by-elections in the State. If the speaker tries to delay his decision on the dissident MLAs of Congress and TDP, the rebellious MLAs are likely to disrupt the proceedings of the House during the Assembly session. Apart from this, the second

The victim, Chandrakala, was going with her husband Venkateshwarloo on the bike, when two men on a bike sped past them and snatched the gold chain from her neck at Lal bazaar, Secunderabad. The couple tried to catch the men but failed. They then lodged a complaint with the Tirumelgherry police station, who are now investigating the case.

According to Dr Srinivas, he reached his workplace at Padma Rao Nagar, Chilkalguda, for his duty and parked his bike in the premises of the nursing home. He noticed that his bike got stolen when he was leaving from his work early next morning. He then lodged a complaint with the Chilkalguda police.

phase of the budget session is likely to be stormy as leaders of various political parties are training their guns to corner the State government on glaring public problems. The House may also be a witness to a serious debate over the recommendations made by the standing committees consisting of opposition party MLAs. Over 300 members of both the Houses of AP Legislature are part of the 12 standing committee constituted by the speaker early this year. The standing committee meetings are going to be held at the Assembly premises on the proposed budget of the State government presented by State finance minister A Narayana Reddy during the first spell of the House.

TDP MULLS OVER ANOTHER NCM? Telugu Desam Party is mulling over moving a no-confidence motion (NCM) against the ruling Congress government, highlighting various issues faced by the people of the State.

THE MONTH OF JUNE IS LIKELY TO WITNESS A SERIES OF POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN THE STATE, WHICH WILL REVOLVE AROUND AP ASSEMBLY SPEAKER NADENDLA MANOHAR, MAKING HIM THE BUSIEST POLITICIAN IN THE STATE. Speaking to Postnoon, TDP senior leader and former minister E Peddi Reddy said that the party would not mind moving an NCM against the State government. “People are suffering a lot under the rule of Congress; no one is happy with their rules. We cannot be a mute spectator to this. If we think that there is a serious need to move [an NCM], we will definitely move it,” he said. However, he agreed that the Congress has scope of defeating the NCM.

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has pulled up the caste scrutiny committees in Maharashtra for issuing caste validity certificates to applicants without holding any enquiry or recording any reasons. In most of such cases, the orders have been passed on the eve of the municipal elections of 2011-2012, noted Justices Abhay Oak and AR Joshi in a recent order. "In fact, this court has observed that in one or two cases the state government has itself challenged the similar orders of the Scrutiny Committee," said the judges while asking the Advocate General Darius Khambata to appear in the matter and assist the court. Apart from the fact that said illegality has been noticed in large number of cases, as a result of such approach of the Caste Scrutiny Committees, the persons who genuinely belong to reserved category may have suffered, the court observed. The Advocate General assured the court that he would PTI look into the matter.

EDITORIALS GATES’ DODGE TO Hyderabad media In the age of excessive media intervention, how did Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates’ visit to Biological E Ltd (a leading vaccine manufacturer) and the International Crops Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) near Hyderabad on Thursday go unnoticed? For the private one-day visit, Gates arrived at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in a private jet and reached ICRISAT at Patancheru in Medak district, about 50km from Hyderabad. He interacted with scientists and ICRISAT officials over various food security programmes. Was this because the US business leader and philanthropist's visit to the Planning Commission on Wednesday marred by a scuffle between his security staff and media personnel? Is it increased focus on corruption in cricket or orders from Big Brother that keeps our prying journalists from even getting basic information on visits concerning social issues of developing countries like India? This when Gates has expressed in his blog that he wants to have a meeting with actor Aamir Khan again this year as his charitable institution Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is conducting research on new vaccines for prevailing diseases in India. Well, for the world’s richest man, guess the gates will always be kept open and there will be no bills to prove the same!

WHY WE LOVE... Sanjay Jagdale From the euphoria of highest ever TRPs to the ignominy of spot-fixing, the Indian Premier League saw it all in its sixth edition this year. What was left at the end of it all though, was a bitter sense of betrayal. While ardent fans of cricket in India, who lap it up in all forms, were shocked, the new ones were not in the bit impressed with the ride they were taken for. Since one big step towards setting things in order, the resignation of the president of BCCI N Srinivasan was not happening, secretary Sanjay Jagdale decided to protest by stepping down. A dignified act that gives us hope that the sport can be salvaged.

What a grand idea Soul Curry SUMAA TEKUR

H

iking the Grand Canyon is one of the toughest things I’ve done. What eased the pressure off my muscles was the sheer grandeur of the canyon. At every level of the hike down, I came face to face with the most vivid natural colours, textures and shapes that only nature is capable of producing. My camera was in my backpack. Now, in hindsight, I shouldn’t have bothered putting it in my bag at all because at every turn and from every angle, there was beauty to absorb, soak in and enjoy. Very soon, by the first half of the first day of the three-day hike, I realised that the Grand Canyon is not something that can be captured in the smallness of a photo frame. Its sweeping majesty is for visitors to be swayed by, not for photographs or videos to reduce its

grandiosity. Nevertheless, I didn’t stop clicking because the urge to share far exceeded the trouble of resting my trekking poles on a rock, unlocking the buckles, taking the backpack off my back, unzipping the pouch and getting the camera out. Yes, there were many things to learn from the Grand Canyon, one of the most important being that nothing – no photographs or vivid descriptions or high-definition videos – can replace being in the moment, as it happens. Enjoying the sights, sounds and smells is all about surrendering to the moment and being one with the universe for that moment. That is one of the purest ways to live. The Grand Canyon is truly huge – one would have to drive 240km around it to cover its entirety. It’s very easy to find some solitude in such a massive place. In the three days that I hiked, I took some popular as well as difficult trails. The more difficult the trail, the fewer people there were. The popular trails had people puffing and panting their way back up. But the popular viewpoints from the

Armed with cameras of every shape, size and model, their main aim was to click pictures to take back home and show off to friends and family, or perhaps to upload them on social networking sites waiting for ‘likes’ and comments. Nothing wrong with that. Just that the Grand Canyon would perhaps have felt more ignored than the cameras in their hands. Being inverted mountains, hikers first hike down and then back up from the canyon. On the first day of the trail, I took a

man-made trail, which was quite popular, because it led to a ranch at the bottom of the canyon next to the Colorado River. This was also a trail that the mule-assisted backpackers took. There was much entertainment on the way in the form of hikers, mules, tourists and talkative guides. But what struck me was that occasionally, I found athletic-looking men of all ages running down the canyon. They ran at such speed – and this is a difficult terrain given the rocks, uneven path, slippery sand – that one wondered what they were really up to. Our hiking group guide then told us that there are some hikers who love to keep time. They sprint from the top to the bottom at high speed trying to make a specific time. He said he had seen many such runners tumble and fall with grievous injuries. But they do it because they’re crazy for record-breaking. As for me, forget records, I’d rather get lost in the colours of the canyon. For, the canyon knows how to bring you back into the moment.

Politics the key to curbing spike in Iraq unrest WG Dunlop AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE

I

VISWAPRASAD RAJU

Meetings

raqi authorities must tackle underlying political issues to curb violence that has killed more than 600 people in May, and avoid approaching it as just a security problem, experts and officials say. The government has failed to stem the spike in violence, which has killed more than 1,000 people in two months and comes amid widespread discontent among the Sunni minority and a series of long-running political disputes. Experts say the anger among Iraq’s Sunnis that exploded into protests last December is the main factor behind the surge in violence. Serious engagement with demonstrators is therefore a key part of any solution. “The government should genuinely (take) steps toward the negotiation with the street, with the protesters," Maria Fantappie, an Iraq analyst with the International Crisis Group said.

Instead, authorities have treated the unrest as a security issue, which has only helped to fuel the cycle of violence, she added. John Drake, an Iraq specialist with risk consulting firm AKE Group, agreed that more security forces operations and arrests would make things worse. “Engagement and dialogue would likely be the most effective way to tackle the violence," he said. But so far, Baghdad’s response has largely been limited to actions by security forces, a shakeup of senior officers, and announcing a series of vague new measures related to security. Discontent has been growing among the Sunni minority, which ruled the country from its establishment after World War I until US-led forces toppled dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003, bringing the Shiite majority to power. Sunnis say the Shiite authorities have politically marginalised their community and targeted them with unwarranted arrests and spurious terrorism charges. Demonstrations first broke out in Sunni-majority areas in

late December. But when security forces raided a protest site in April, sparking clashes that killed dozens of people, tensions soared even higher. While the government has made some concessions aimed at placating protesters and Iraqi Sunnis in general, such as freeing prisoners and raising the salaries of anti-Al-Qaeda Sunni fighters, underlying issues have yet to be addressed. And myriad long-running political disputes between leading politicians are not making

things easier. Some of these are linked to Iraqi Sunnis’ grievances, while others stem from issues ranging from control of territory to power-sharing. Analysts often link political stability in Iraq with levels of violence, arguing that militants capitalise on political disputes to gain support for their activities. But efforts to resolve political differences have so far been unsuccessful. “If there is a political agreement, then security will be better. We see it on the contrary right now — there is no political

agreement, and sectarian violence is on the rise," said UN envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler. “Sectarian violence will be on the decline if there is a political agreement," he said. Crispin Hawes, the Middle East and North Africa director for the Eurasia Group consultancy, said Prime Minister Nuri alMaliki, a Shiite, is unlikely to make any sweeping concessions to Iraqi Sunnis. “The Iraqi government’s approach to this is to... view this as a technical, tactical security problem, and which is obviously part of any solution," Hawes said. “But the fact is this is obviously a political problem, and the political problem has been... to a great extent deliberately precipitated by the government." Baghdad may “make marginal concessions to elements within the Sunni Arab political organisations," which could have some impact on the security situation, he said. But Maliki “clearly has no desire to make concessions in a way that would bring the Sunni Arab community back into the broader political environment in Iraq. He’s clearly taken the decision that he wants to exclude them," he said.

It’s been a bad week for women

E

rick Erickson declares males ‘must dominate’ and the Post writes about a female politician’s shoes. What century is this? It’s been a slow week for news, and media companies are going after just about anything. But that’s still a poor excuse for how women were treated in some of America’s leading publications and television stations. Let’s start with Fox News: “When you look at biology, when you look at the natural world – the roles of a male and a female in society and in other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complementary role." That was how Fox News commentator Erick Erickson interpreted new data released this week indicating that women are now the main breadwinners in 40 per cent of American homes. He defended himself by adding: “I’m so used to liberals telling conservatives that they’re anti-science. But liberals who defend this and say it is not a bad thing are very anti-science."

IT’S BEEN A SLOW WEEK FOR NEWS, BUT THAT’S STILL A POOR EXCUSE FOR HOW WOMEN WERE TREATED IN SOME OF AMERICA’S LEADING PUBLICATIONS AND TELEVISION STATIONS. You could write that off as Fox News doing what they do best: being provocative. But the Boston Globe, certainly a more progressive company, wasn’t a whole lot better with their story this week on women who have elite degrees and opt to stay at home with their kids. This supposedly thoughtful article doesn’t ask any men what they think or attempt to profile any stay-at-home dads. It’s as if this issue, which has been debated for years, is only about women. Period. But the “you have to be kidding me” moment of the week goes to the Washington Post for their story titled: “A White House counsel known for her shoes". Readers – male and female – are tired of superficial stories about females in power. We all deserve a better public discussion.

T

hree childhood friends, Krishnapriya, Arpita Soma and Sneha got together to solve a problem. It was not just their problem but also the problem of the student community. In 2009, Arpita Soma, who was in the US studying her Masters in Environmental Engineering from University of Cincinnati, came back to India on a family visit. Her casual discussion with friends gave birth to the business idea. Their discussion was about the problem of getting internships. Sneha says, “Krishnapriya and I were in our final year of MBA, trying hard to get an internship as part of our course. On the other hand, in the US, Arpita had two to three internships in hand and had to choose one. In US, companies visit universities for intern placements, whereas in India, students have to go around offices for placements. This deep contrast between the two countries pushed us to start www.internfever.com, that helps a student to get an internship in an easy way. Explaining the problem, Arpita says, “In AP, students get an opportunity in their final year to work with the industry. Due to lack of proper structure, students tend to move towards buying projects from consultancies and miss the opportunity to get hands-on experience. This

The trio did a lot of research to start the business. Sneha says, “We even conducted a survey to see the feasibility of the business model. Most of the students do not even know about internships and they are more than happy to join and work as interns. Based on this research, we started the business in December 2010 with a joint investment of `2 lakh. For the first six months, we worked from Krishnapriya’s home to check the viability and later rented an office after the numbers were encouraging.” She adds, “First, we approached companies and found their needs. We then went to colleges and conducted workshops imparting the importance of doing internships. In a way, we act as a bridge between students and companies and help them (students) in getting apt internships and the right intern for the company.” On their business model, Krishnapriya says, “We charge around `2,000-`5,000 per student based on the requirement. We

also charge a basic fee of `500 from each student. Earlier, we were not charging students but found there were many out there who came here to test themselves and said no when we offer them internships. A lot of time and effort goes waste on these students. Putting a price filtered non-serious students and also made them value the internship.” Although there is a good response from the industry, the business had to undergo challenges like any other. “Some parents do not want their children to work in their final years. They want them to study and get good marks rather than spend time to get work experience. “Although many students are interested to work with these

companies, they backed out at a later stage after discussing it with their parents. We tried to convince the students and further, they used to convince their parents. However, the scenario is changing now and even parents are encouraging their children to go for work experience,” says Arpita. “Entrepreneurship is satisfying and encouraging. Students are very happy after getting their internships. They even scan their paycheque and tag us on Facebook. Their thanks and well wishes give us a high and motivates us,” she says. Talking about the industry scenario, Sneha says, “It was the time when start-up culture was blossoming in the City. Most of

them could not afford senior people for their roles. These internships provided them the right people at a salary of `4,000-`6,000 a month. Even some big companies want to manage the workload of their employees by hiring these people. Students not only get experience but also get pocket money for their everyday needs. In a way, it creates a winwin situation for both of them.” On opportunities, she says, “Often, it is surprising. There are more opportunities as compared to the number of students who want to do an internship. There is a skill gap in the IT industry and they want students who have strong technical knowledge. There are more opportunities in marketing and management field. First, we do online screening and conduct an aptitude test to get right candidates. The selected ones will be sent to the company for interviews. We also give feedback to the ones who did not find their way. And at times, we even give them the opportunity to join us and later apply for them.” In long term, the company also wants to start their offices in New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

t least four firefighters died while battling a hotel fire in Houston Friday, officials said. Over 100 firefighters were reportedly on the scene, and the Red Cross was also there providing assistance. But it could not be ascertained what sparked the fire. There was no word on whether all 45 guests and employees had been accounted for.

S Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Saturday accused Beijing of involvement in cyber espionage against Washington in a speech at a Singapore security forum attended by Chinese military officials. Ahead of a summit between their leaders next week, Hagel blamed the Chinese government for repeated intrusions into sensitive US information systems.

Russia slammed for arms deal Planned delivery of advanced missile systems to Syria was not helping end the conflict, US said. AFP PHOTO/ SERGEI SUPINSKY

DAMASCUS: US Secretary of State John Kerry has strongly condemned Russia’s pledge to sell an advanced missile system to Damascus, questioning Moscow’s commitment to end the Syrian conflict, as concern grew for civilians trapped in the battle for a key Syrian town. Speaking from Washington, Kerry warned that the planned delivery of S-300 air defence missiles to Damascus was “not helpful” as the US and Russia pressed on with their joint efforts to set up a peace conference, dubbed Geneva 2, to try to end the Syrian conflict. Kerry said it would have a “profoundly negative impact on the balance of interests and the stability of the region, and it does put Israel at risk”. It is “not helpful to have the S-300 transferred to the region while you are trying to organise this peace and create peace,” he added, questioning whether Russia was committed to ending Syria’s two-year-old conflict. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, in Washington for talks with Kerry,

We tell our Russian colleagues, don’t endanger the conference in Geneva. “The delivery of weapons to the Assad regime is totally wrong,” he said. In a television interview

broadcast Thursday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appeared to imply that Russia had started to deliver sophisticated S-300 missile systems under a contract with Syria. Russia’s Vedomosti and Kommersant newspapers said Moscow might not deliver the

missiles this year, rejecting claims they had already arrived. Russian news agency Interfax reported that Moscow could supply 10 ultra-modern MiG-29 fighter jets to Syria under a possible contract being discussed with Damascus. Syrian troops and Hezbollah allies meanwhile pressed ahead with their assault on the strategic town of Qusayr as hundreds of rebels broke through army lines to join the battle. The Syrian opposition said Friday that hundreds of rebel reinforcements, most of them close to the Muslim Brotherhood, had now reached Qusayr. “Around 1,000 fighters from across Syria” had penetrated the town near the Lebanese border, the National Coalition’s interim leader George Sabra told reporters in Istanbul. “Hundreds” of rebels have broken through army lines near the village of Shamsinn, northeast of Qusayr, after losing 11 fighters, according to Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Coalition has appealed

for the rescue of 1,000 civilians wounded in Qusayr, which Assad’s forces have been trying to retake in an all-out offensive since May 19. Thousands of people who have fled the besieged town are in dire need of aid, the UN’s refugee agency said, as its tally for Syrians who have escaped their war-torn nation topped 1.6 million. UNHCR spokesman Dan McNorton told reporters that at least 3,500 people — mostly women and children — had made it to nearby Hasiya. The agency was able “to witness the dire humanitarian situation of these displaced families”, he said. The EU on Friday waived the arms embargo against rebels, leaving members free from June 1 to decide at their discretion whether to supply carefully vetted weapons to the opposition. But there was a joint commitment to refrain for the moment from supplying weapons for fear of endangering the Geneva 2 talks, with a review of that policy AFP due “before August 1”.

A further five people were injured when the blast occurred late Friday in a fifth floor condominium unit in “the Fort", a high-end residential district in the Manila suburbs. Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, who visited the scene with President Benigno Aquino just hours after the incident, initially said three people were killed and four injured. He said it was too early to tell if the blast was due to a bomb or an accident. The explosion took place just a few metres away from a popular area of restaurants, bars and shops that attract thousands.

running battles overnight, leaving dozens injured, as an environmentalist protest spirals into a broaderbased anti-government outcry. Riot police on Friday used tear gas and water cannon to break up the protest on Istanbul’s Taksim Square which spiralled into a wider outcry against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government. Dozens were injured in the demonstration against plans to raze a park across from the square to build a shopping mall, which turned into a broader showdown as angry protesters chanted: “Government resign!" The number of injured earned Turkey a rare rebuke from its US ally.

ZEN AND THE ART OF ULTRAPHONES

Zen Ultrafone 701HD comes with a low price tag, but it matches higherend phones in performance.

NT BALANARAYAN

balanarayan.nt@postnoon.com

S

amsung needs to be worried, really worried, because there is a new crop of smartphones out there that are reasonably priced and are as good as some of the high-end devices. Micromax has been ruling the mid-range smartphone market with some really impressive devices that are very well priced. However, these devices are out of stock most of the time because of excessive demand and Zen’s new device is looking to steal their thunder. Ultrafone 701HD boasts of specs that you find in last year’s high-end devices such as Samsung Galaxy S3 and pairs it with an almost Vanilla Android Jelly Bean (4.2.1) making it one of the best Android phones in the market as of now. The device comes in a really attractive box and inside you’ll find the device, a two-pin charger, a USB to mini-USB cable, a pair of earphones, a white back panel and a flip cover.

DESIGN

AND BUILD QUALITY

As far as the looks are concerned it is a pretty unassuming device, which is a good thing in this case. The design is minimalist with slightly rounded corners and the power button on the right side and volume controls are on the left. It does not have any physical buttons, but has back, home and options as touch-keys towards the bottom. It also sports an LED to the right of the cam-

era to alert you of any pending notifications. There is a thin shiny piece of plastic that runs around the front of the device that has a black metal finish. The backpanel is made of plastic with a rubberised finish that gives it a very premium finish and the speaker grill is placed towards the bottom of the device. The 8megapixel camera is in a slightly raised position, however the lens does not get scratched even when pushed along a table. Overall, the device looks much better than any other mid-range device, especially its main competitor Micromax A116 Canvas HD that is priced few k’s above. Once you take off the back panel you’ll find the slots for your sim cards and a slot for the memory card. There are a few things here and there that I found an issue with though, for example you can’t put in a micro-SD card without taking off the backpanel. The other one is that the direction shown for inserting sim cards at the back is incorrect. While talking on the phone I couldn’t hear the person on the other end loud enough, but the person was able to hear me very clearly. The speakers at the back are quite loud, but sounds a little tinny, but that’s a problem with most phones in this price range. The earphones that come with the device are very average and you would be better off getting a better pair of earphones, but it does have better voice quality than the phone.

SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE

The mobile runs on MediaTek MT6589 Quad-Core Cortex-A7 1.2GHz quad-core processor that is based on Imagination Technologies’s

ARM PowerVR Series5XT GPU. It also has 1GB RAM to keep up with all your multitasking. In my experience the phone was able to keep up with my workflow perfectly well. I was able to play Temple Run without any lag, or screen tear while Chrome

and YouTube apps waited in the background. The processor speed comes in handy when you have to unlock phone and hop straight to the camera app, which opened in a moment’s notice and was really impressive. The phone comes preinstalled with a few custom apps such as Backup and restore (for moving data to your memory card), Flashlight, FM Radio, apart from WhatsApp and a few other chatting apps. It also has a Zen Store pre-installed which does not serve much purpose as the device already has Google’s Play Store. Like most dual-sim phones, this device too gives you the option to set a sim as the default for certain functions. You can set the sim as default for calls and another for data or messaging. It also lets you choose between the sims each time you need to perform any of these actions. Overall it handles the dualsim scenario very well by using separate colours for messages and calls coming from both sim cards. Zen deserves special credit for shipping a model with the latest version of Android. The only gripe I have is that I wasn’t able to bring up Google Now by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Also, I would have been happier if they had a multi-tasking button instead of the options one on the device. As of now you need to hold the home button to multitask.

C AMERA

Ultrafone 701 HD comes with a customised camera app which packs a lot of features, but doesn’t do a good enough job overall. All photos are taken in 16:9 ratio and those taken in daylight areas look good — though a bit saturated — but the low-light performance leaves much to be desired. In low-light the photos were very grainy in auto setting. In the night mode the photos were too blurry and the flash is good only for shooting objects

close to you. The video quality could be considered good enough, but not great. Zen however deserves credit for packing features such as touch to focus, HDR etc in the camera and they work very well.

SCREEN

AND BATTERY LIFE

The five inch screen is very sharp with a resolution of 720x1280 which makes videos and pictures look really good. Brightness levels are pretty decent for a device in this price range. I found the minimum brightness level a bit too bright when reading in the dark and I was able to read without any difficulty with brightness set to

Screen size: 5” Resolution: 720x1280 Processor: 1.2Ghz quadcore RAM: 1GB Memory: 4GB internal, expandable up to 32GB OS: Android 4.2.1 Price: `11,999 maximum when outside. Generally the problem with having such a big screen and a powerful 1.2Ghz processor is that it takes a toll on the battery life, but not with this device. Even with slightly heavy usage I was able to make it through the day, by the time I hit the bed there was 10 per cent battery left — amazing! In this particular scenario I had 3G on with email sync and I spent a little less than two hours on call, used WhatsApp, Hangouts, watched a few videos on YouTube and played a couple of games. I also spent about an hour and a half browsing via Chrome. The fact that it didn’t run out of battery by the evening was great.

CONCLUSION

5-inch screen, 1.2Ghz quadcore processor, great battery life, latest version of Android, this phone is great. This phone is not perfect, especially the camera app which needs some rework, but for the price it sells for I would consider it a steal. So I would highly recommend this one.

Travelling woes AMY ROSE THOMAS

Who said only you need a vacation? Your furry friends also need a break and deserve a holiday. But getting a visa for your pet is not a cakewalk.

F

or those of you who cannot part with your pets even for a holiday, taking them along wherever you go is the only option. They can always join you on road trips but when you are have to travel to another country, then comes the problem. Getting a visa for your pet is not a cakewalk. While travelling with your pet, the rules that one needs to follow depend on the country that you are going to or coming from. Dr Lakshmi S of Animal Care Clinic says, “There are countries that are lenient when it comes to allowing animals into their countries while there are others that have very stringent and strict laws. For instance, Australia has marked India as a Red country. Red stands for danger and in order get a pet to Australia one has to go through a lot of ordeal. After getting all the required vaccinations, one should take it to a Blue country and after six months of staying there only can the pet access Australia. Other countries have relatively relaxed their laws after rabies neutralising antibody test became compulsory.” Another problem the pet owner faces is that these countries change their laws every few weeks and it becomes all the more difficult to get the paper work done. “We regularly check the laws pertinent to each country because they tend to change. For starters, pets needs to get all the required vaccinations and these must be duly recorded too. After all this hassle, many times they have to be kept in isolation for a while before they get to meet their owners,” she adds. There are many who brave these ordeals and get their animals along when travelling. There are many organisations in the City that help you with the procedure. For those who have been transferred to another country, going through these tasks is the only way so that they can get to keep the animal with them.

Robert Cargill's Dreams and Shadows revives the dark side of the supernatural world, and is mercifully devoid of love-lorn vampires and horny werewolves. Reminiscent of the world of the Grimm brothers, children quickly lose their way into the dark unknown. Changelings, genies, magicians and child-snatchers populate the world, barely veiled from human eyes. The book starts with a sugary sweet love story; a tale that quickly goes sour when the faeries covet the human child. The changeling who replaces him feels the pain of being the unwanted one, and spends his life envying and hating his human counterpart. On the other side of town, a neglected young boy stumbles upon a genie, whose fate is to fulfill wishes that always go wrong. Setting off together to see the world, the boy grows up too soon. She had started an uproar on the Internet with her blog Compulsive Confessions in which she came clean about her love life and the like. And now, one book and 10 years later, she is back with her second book Cold Feet. I was quite excited when I got a chance to read it. the faeries. From the start, it's easy to see that this is no children's fairytale. Childhood is lost early. Death comes often and brutally; violence is almost de rigueur. However, disillusionment and isolation are the overwhelming emotions. Every one of the characters is, at heart, a lost child. The characters are familiar supernatural creations, but Cargill imbues them with the rare quality of flesh and blood. As he puts it, every magical

creature is the product of human imagination, hence their bloodthirsty and unscrupulous behaviour is but an extension of human nature. With this, he elevates a simple tale of faeries and goblins into a dark look into the human psyche, which has more monsters than the world is capable of producing. The brilliant cover art itself is a trip into disturbia, with its fantastical creatures and trippy motifs. The story unravels a little in the middle. The passage of

years, as the characters grow up, is a disappointing lull in the sofar exciting novel. Read on, though, because soon all the threads come together to hurtle recklessly towards the tragic finale. There is no simplistic good versus evil fight here. The very concepts of good and evil are challenged. Angels might fight your battles one day; the next, they're your worst enemies. The story revolves around the lives of five women, each in different stages of their relationships. All five stories go in tandem and many a time you are left wondering which character the author is talking about. This is the case especially in the first chapter where in each of the five characters are introduced. All the five narratives went on simultaneously and it took a while for one to understand the

This was an interested thought when raised by one character of the book, but all the others following suit read juvenile. All said, there are a few things that the book does get it right. The author has managed to capture the lives of urban girls, the emotions they go through when it comes to love and the sacrifices they have to make. If you are in the mood for a mindless, frothy entertainer then Cold Feet is the book for you.

DEEPASHRI V

eeing the cover, one would think it’s a selfhelp book, something on the lines of Ten simple steps to the art of thinking clearly. After the introduction, which clearly says “it is not a how-to book,” when you proceed to chapters, the sheer number of them—99 chapters compactly packed in one book— seems unnerving. But when you start with the first, then the second, reluctant to let anyone teach you how to think clearly, you realise you can’t put the book down—not because it’s a fantasy novel that weaves a world you wish you lived in, but because you will be surprised by the sheer number of biases listed the book which we unknowingly practice every day, thereby letting them cloud our judgment and ability to think rationally.

It’s nothing that we don’t know, except the technical terms given to these biases and behaviour. But it’s something we overlook, don’t accept or simply don’t realise. It’s not a serious of lectures or preaching to be followed, but simple, interesting examples from the past and present, from different walks of life — from management and medicine to advertising and war — that are so easy to relate to, and that make you say, “Hey! This is exactly how I behave in this situation! Maybe this is what I should do next time.” The first chapter, “Why you should visit cemeteries,” makes you wonder, “Why would I visit them?” That was just a simple way to make us look at how much we overestimate the

chances of success without being realistic about it. As the author says, behind ever successful author, there are hundred others whose books never sell; behind them, another hundred who never find publishers, hundreds with unfinished manuscripts or those who just dream of writing someday. Yet we only take the example of the one successful author—a minor possibility—and overlook chances of failure. And visiting a cemetery makes us

take calculated risks. Other interesting chapters that deal with issues like: Do we go with popular opinion and follow what others say? Do top-notch universities produce the best results or do they merely have a strict screening process where they anyway take only the best candidates? How we accept only those events or facts that confirm things that we already believe in and overlook the rest, how we fall for forecast illusions and ‘It’ll get worse before it gets better’ is not always true, are discussed, among other things. You laugh, you’ll be in

denial, you’ll accept and you’ll look back and learn with this book. You may not agree with everything you read, but it will certainly get you thinking. And it definitely is not a self-help book. It’s a compilation of our behaviour, clouded judgments and beliefs, in situations which we face every day — something all of us can relate to. Definitely worth a read.

What’ve you been thinking? It’s not a series of lectures to be followed, but simple, interesting examples from the past and present, from different walks of life that you can relate to. T

heorising a much non-publicised principle in management known as the 80/20 principle, Koch clearly defines the importance of this theory in the life of managers and the main idea behind implementing this principle in organisations and other managerial structures. Not to forget, as he mentions and portrays different examples by varied managers

Be more effectual from the corporate world, he does not leave his own opinions behind, as he struggles to invoke the 80/20 principle in the minds of the people in a very convincing way. Turning the pages of this book will get you nothing but a bunch of surprising facts, yet the whole crux of this book stays with the fact that 80 per cent of profits in business come from a mere 20 per cent of efforts put into achieving them. This, Koch says, is the key success to achieve more without putting yourself through any hassles or unnecessary work pressure, as he lucidly despises the work lifestyle of the managers existing in the corporate world today.

To make the read more emphatic, he lists 10 different ways in which a manager can accomplish his as well as the organisation’s goals through effective means, which are less cumbersome and time saving. By following the 80/20 principle, one can not only expect higher returns with the minimal daily

grind which they face, but also happiness and inner satisfaction. Koch bloviates the point wherein he attempts to explain to readers of how much of our efforts actually go into profiting the company and how much is going waste. This novel compels you to think of whether your methods and cognitions of management are true and absolute, as you will be taken through pages, no matter how good a manager you are, you will still feel running out a little short on the aberrant theories which Koch lays down, revolving around the high effectiveness of the 80/20 principle. In short, 80/20 Principle could be recommended as one of the best reads for aspiring managers, and for those who plan to make it big in the management and corporate world.

When art imitates life Pramida Posanipalli reveals more about the making of Mere Haule Dost and producing an indie film, which is a reflection of her husband and director Nitin Raghunath’s life itself.

ramida Posanipalli, like every other first time producer in film industry, is going through the last minute jitters about how the response for the film is going to be, but she does a terrific job hiding all that. After spending eight years in the US, her life turned topsy turvy when she decided to go on a sabbatical to assist her husband, Nitin Raghunath, who was about to relocate to India make a feature film Mere Haule Dost. The film, set in Hyderabad, is about a gang of friends who want to go on a bike rally, but they don’t have the money. As Pramida gets talking about her life so far, we couldn’t help but notice the parallels between what the characters in the film go through and her own journey when she turned producer. She admits saying,“It’s true in a way. We invested all our savings to make this film. When I think about the film and what we have gone through to make the film, it reminds me of a dialogue which goes like Life mein lagti hai sabki vaat. It’s really tough, especially if you don’t have a backing, but then, we were quite optimistic that we will pull it off. Similarly, the characters don't have the

money to go on a trip, but they figure it out in the end.” Was it absolutely necessary that they invest all their money into the film, especially after considering the fact that indie films rarely make any money at the box-office? “I believe that at least once in your life, you have to do what you really dream about. I don't want to look back at my life thirty years later and regret not doing something. It's almost like the elements that are there in the film. So many indie films keep getting shelved these days even before completion. We were certain that if produced it ourselves, we'll make sure that the film is complete, if not released theatrically,” she says. Nitin Raghunath, her husband, had made a feature film several years ago; however, he met with an accident soon after completing it and several years

I BELIEVE THAT AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU REALLY DREAM ABOUT. I DON’T WANT TO REGRET NOT DOING SOMETHING. later, when he moved to US, he made few short films. One of them was even screened in the short films corner at Cannes Film Festival. “I have seen how passionate he is about what he wants to do. So, it was quite natural that I come onboard to make the film,” she adds. As a producer, she was responsible for all the scheduling, budgeting, costumes and several other things, which a normal producer wouldn’t do. For someone who has been working in Cisco, it does seem

like taking up a daunting task to produce films. Isn’t it? “Films are definitely a different ball game, but my experience in analysis and project management at Cisco helped me a lot. People on the film’s sets were surprised to see me do all the work on Excel sheets and pivot tables,” she laughs. Mere Haule Dost is based on a comic book which Nitin had created in 2008 and it’s inspired from Nitin’s own experiences in Hyderabad. “The film has a distinct Hyderabad flavour, yet it also reflects the cosmpolitan nature of the city,” Pramida says. So, does she have a backup plan? “The initial idea was to spend a year in India to make the film. Thanks to PVR, we are finally releasing the film. Quite frankly, I do miss my life back in California,” she smiles. (The film is out in theatres on June 7)

t’s when men who are in power think anything and everything they say is biblical truth and that they ought not be challenged that feminist bodies begin to make noise. The foot-inmouth disease is surprisingly not only just an Indian thing. There are others across the world in every strata of the society who think of their views on women are correct. Take for example, Conservative commentator Erick Erickson. On Wednesday night when, responding to the news that a record number of families rely on women’s income, he argued on Fox News that it was “natural” for men to take the “dominant role” and that women being the primary breadwinner for families is “hurting our children, and it’s going to have an impact for generations to come.” Where does this man come from? Surely from Mars. He goes on to say, “In modern society we are not supposed to say such things about child rearing and families. In modern society we are not supposed to point out that children in a twoparent heterosexual nuclear household have a better chance at long term success in life than others. In modern society, we are supposed to applaud feminists who teach women they can have it all — that there is no gender identifying role and women can fulfill the role of husbands and fathers just as men do.[...]” Despite celebrating all kinds of days honouring women, proclaiming everywhere that women are no longer secondary or inferior beings and that equality among the genders finally is a plausible thing, people like Erickson take all that progress back by a 100 years. Single mothers can very well accomplish all duties of a parent and none can take that away from them. Many choose to be single mums and some become so due to circumstances. Telling each and every woman how they should be raising their kids or living their lives or making career and partner choices is a just something people like Erikson would do.

I AM ALL EARS

I

am a 30-year-old woman. It’s been two years since our marriage. My husband recently resigned from his job on a whim. Now he is sitting at home while I work double shifts and yet he expects me to do the house work. I am tired and we have been having fights. How do I get the message across?

eople will lie about their sexual behavior to match cultural expectations about how men or women should act -- even though they wouldn't distort other gender-related behaviors, new research suggests. The study found that men were willing to admit that they sometimes engaged in behaviors seen by college students as more appropriate for women, such as writing poetry. The same was true for women, who didn't hide the fact that they told obscene jokes.

Dear disturbed kid, Now that old nail needs a little explaining to do to both you and himself for putting yourselves in such a solution. When men’s egos come in the way unfortunately there is only so much you can do. In this case I would suggest you tell him he needs to do the house work as your boss is giving you a hard time and you are not keeping well. A few days let the dishes be undone, let the laundry be unclean. He will learn.

was just a 15-year-old girl when it all began. Just like any other teenager who had just fallen in love, I got blinded too. Initially it started with just a slap. It always happened over very silly reasons. And, after every hit, he would come pleading for forgiveness and I would succumb to it. Gradually, over days, the slaps changed to beating and later, even choking,” recalls Anita, now 21. Anita’s is not the only case. Today, violence among teenagers who are dating is very common in our country but it is just one of those issues that are not spoken about openly. Teen dating violence or TDV is typically defined as the physical, sexual, or emotional violence within a teenage-dating relationship. “Teen dating violence is common here too. There could be many reasons behind it like, lack of family support and poor impulse control. Also, considering the fact that we learn gender inequality so early in our lives, it is not a surprise that dating among teens has its share of violent acts,” says Dr. Kalpana G Sringar, a mental health professional at Sringar Centre

of Medical Psy & Rehab. Veronica, 17, says, “Whenever my boyfriend gets angry at me, he slaps me and throws things at me. I keep quiet because I know it’s my fault and also, I am very scared. Few of my best friends know about it and they do not like him.” Another teenager, Ashish, 19, confesses, “I once hit my ex- girlfriend in the cafeteria. She enraged me to the core and I just couldn’t control my impulses. But, later I was sincerely apologetic and she even forgave me.” Padmini Varma, a 44-year-old mother of two teenagers says, “I think TDV is a rarity in our country. I have never heard of any such case. And moreover, I am sure that whenever any such act happens with my daughter, she will definitely inform me about it.” So, what is the real reason behind the unawareness of this issue? “In a country where men and women are constantly urged not to interact except after marriage, no one wants to acknowledge the possibility of teenage romance or dating. Also, the victim hardly ever comes out in the open, as they are usually shocked and ashamed about it,” says Dr Diana Monteiro, a clinical psychologist. “Further the perpetrator of the violence is usually apologetic and promises not to do it again, so the

teen would either feel assured or that it is their fault that it happened. Another reason is that the teenagers fear telling their parents as they usually react with anger rather than deal with the situation,” she adds. It is time to accept that any adolescent may be a victim of TDV and parents shouldn’t believe in the myth that it is rare and can never happen to their kids.“Teenage is said to be a period of stress and storm; which is so true in the sense that not only the teens but also their parents are confused about their behaviour and reactions. So, primarily all parents must work on improving communication with their children,” says Dr. S Jayanthi, a consultant psychologist at Roshni Counselling Centre. “Awareness among teens about healthy relationships will always help. Also making sure a teen always has an adult they can share things with without being judged or criticised will help teens know that they have support,” observes Dr Monteiro.

REVENGE GOES AWRY

Beyond its slick cinematography and action, Iddarammayilatho is much ado about nothing and ends up being quite an uninspiring tale of revenge. Hemanth Kumar

ddarammayilatho is an absolutely gorgeous film to look at, right from the moment when the titles roll. The entire action takes place in Barcelona. Although, the city itself doesn’t add value to the story, the ambience in which the story is set lends credence to what the protagonist in the film does. We are told that the hero is a street performer and quite popular with the local crowd too. Forget the fact that most of the songs he sings have a strange combination of Telugu and English, Allu Arjun, who plays Sanju Reddy, seems to have taken moniker as ‘stylish star’ quite seriously this time. The costumes are trendy and never once does he look out of the character, although the same cannot be said about the rest of his gang. One fine day, Komali (Amala Paul), a Brahmin girl from India, comes to Barcelona to learn classical music and she falls in love with Sanju Reddy. While everything seems to be going fine, their life takes a drastic turn when Komali is kidnapped by a gang.

matter, even Katherine is quite pretty, if you can forget how annoying her characterisation is. One of the things that do stand out is the cinematography by Amol Rathod. The sunbathed frames of Barcelona, combined with soft lighting, give a different texture to the film, which is not so common in Telugu films. Then, there’s Kecha, whose stylish action choreography is one of the high points in the film.

Movie: Iddarammayilatho Cast: Allu Arjun, Amala Paul, Katherine Tresa Directed by: Puri Jagannadh Rating: Few months later, Sanju meets Akanksha (Katherine Tresa) who comes to know about Sanju’s love story and as the rules of Telugu cinema command, she falls in love with him. It’s strange that a storyline this archaic can go wrong, but it does and in a glorious fashion. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, some of film’s brightest moments occur in the first half where Allu Arjun and Amala Paul’s onscreen chemistry sets the screen ablaze. For that

he first look and teaser of Mahesh Babu’s upcoming film in Sukumar’s direction was launched on May 31 on the occasion of Superstar Krishna’s birthday. The film has been titled as 1 and it has a tagline Nenokkadine. It’s the first time that Sukumar and Mahesh Babu are collaborating for a film and the first look of Mahesh Babu in the film is making a lot of buzz on the Internet. Kriti Sanon is the lead actress in the film and it’s said to be a romantic thriller. Devi Sri Prasad is scoring the music and the film has been produced under 14 Reels Entertainment banner. The film unit will head to London later this month for a 45-days schedule.

Beyond the slick cinematography and the overall style quotient, the film has no meat, especially in the second half. Puri Jagannadh seems to have clearly run out of ideas by the time he comes to the end of first half. The dialogues do have a distinct Puri Jagannadh’s trademark, but this is not even a patch on what Puri has managed to achieve in the past. If only, the film’s screenplay was as good as its style, it wouldn’t have been this boring.

rt-House Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh succumbed to a cardiac-arrest on 30th May 2013 at his residence in Kolkota. The void that the demise of Rituparno Ghosh will leave on Indian cinema, especially Bengali cinema cannot be filled soon, for his death brings an end to the whole era of Bengali neo-realism that began with the likes of Rithwick Ghatak, Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen in the 1960’s. Rituparno Ghosh gave a second life to the new wave of films in Bengal in the early 90’s when the movement and Bengali cinema were at an all time low. Rituparno Ghosh began his career in the advertisement sector before he took to cinema. His debut film Hirer Angti released in 1992. Middle class lives, women-centric stories, homosexuality, these were the subjects Rituparno chose to make his films on, subjects that other Indian filmmakers would fear to even experiment with. In a rather short-lived cinematic career of 21 years, Rituparno released 22 feature films and won 12 National Awards. Bad acting ruins After Earth While it is not as stunningly bad as The Happening or The Last Airbender, After Earth still isn't a very good film in its own right.

n a future where mankind has had to abandon Earth and has found a new home on a colony called Nova Prime, humanity's greatest warrior, Cypher Raige (Will Smith) has just come back from a long tour of duty to be reunited with his son Kitai (Jaden Smith). He takes Kitai with him on a routine training mission, but a deep-space calamity leaves them marooned back on Earth. With both of Cypher's legs broken, it's up to Kitai to find a beacon that will signal their presence. Now, Kitai not only has to navigate the treacherous environment, but he's also being stalked by a dangerous alien from Nova Prime that was on-board the ship when it crashed. It's much better than M Night Shyamalan's last couple of movies. It's not as mind-numbingly awful as The Last Airbender or as unintentionally funny as The Happening. At times it actually comes close to being relatively decent movie. Sadly, those

Movie : After Earth Cast : Will Smith, Jaden Smith Director : M. Night Shyamalan moments are all within the first twenty minutes or so before the big crash that sets the plot in motion and sidelines star Will Smith, leaving the film in the hands of his now teenage-son Jaden. It was inevitable that, after the success of the Karate Kid reboot it was only a matter of time before Jaden got a big tent-pole action movie of his own. While Smith is an OK young actor, it can't be forgotten that he's been made into a movie star through his father's mega-stardom, and putting him in an action movie where he's not only the star but virtually the only actor on-screen for 80% of the running time is a big burden for any

actor to carry. Will Smith did it fairly well in I am Legend, but he was a seasoned pro by this pointJaden Smith is not. He's still an OK actor, but he doesn't have much of a personality, and watching him as he tries to navigate a heavily CGI'd Earth (complete with lots of CGI baboons, vultures, mutant snake-birds, etc) is pretty boring. Nevertheless, After Earth does have a few things going for it. The CGI is terrible, but some of the scenery on Earth is nice. The musical score by James Newton Howard is excellent, and Will Smith, while only on-screen here and there, is good in his limited role, although the strange accent everyone uses is a very eccentric (and unnecessary) addition to the film. So, while it's not as stunningly bad as The Happening or The Airbender, After Earth still isn't a very good film in its own right. IMDB

organ Freeman believes in those intricate nuances of acting that add to the visual language of the scene rather than the dramatic quotient and this approach has got him a lot of appreciation from both the critics and the audiences over the years. He is a subtle actor, one who does not try to gain attention by overplaying a scene. Freeman began his acting career on stage in New York City and then went on to do a few shows on television before he entered the motion-pictures industry. He debuted in The Pawnbroker (1964), a film in which his role went uncredited. Freeman went on to do a number of supporting-actor roles through the 80s, something that he excelled in later on. In 1987, he received his first Academy Award nomination for supporting lead in Christopher Reeve starrer Street Smart, but it was in the year 1989 that Morgan Freeman got the success he deserved, two of his films, Glory and Driving Miss Daisy

n Morgan Freeman has lent his voice to some of the best environmental documentaries like March of the Penguins (2005) and Born to be Wild (2011). n Morgan Freeman received the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. were hugely successful and also critically acclaimed. It was now that the world had got to see the true genius of this actor in the roles of an army officer and a cab driver respectively. Freeman also received his second Oscar nomination for Driving Miss Daisy, this time for Best Actor. Freeman became a seasoned actor by the 90s, ace directors started to cast him in their films, beginning with Clint Eastwood in the Academy Award winning classic western drama Unforgiven (1992). Morgan gave one of his best performances ever in a film titled The Shawshank Redemtion (1994), playing a prison-mate alongside Tim Robbins, the authenticity he bought to his role made it memorable. He was also the narrator in this film that got him his third Academy Award

nomination for Best Actor. Freeman effectively played a detective in David Fincher’s thriller Seven (1995) with Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg casted Morgan in his historical drama Amistad (1997) alongside Anthony Hopkins, the film was not a commercial success but the performances were widely appreciated. Clint Eastwood casted Freeman again in a sports drama film Million Dollar Baby (2004), this film got him his first Oscar win for best supporting actor. The character was tailormade for him, the subtlety that the role required could be pulled off only by an actor of his command over the craft. In the following years Freeman played numerous supporting roles in films like The Dark Knight trilogy, Bruce Almighty, Gone Baby Gone, The Bucket List etc. It was in 2009 that Morgan Freeman got to play his dream role as Nelson Mandela in Clint Eastwood’s biographical film Invictus. There could not be an actor around the world who could play Mandela better. The film was critically acclaimed and gave Freeman his fourth Academy Award nomination. Morgan Freeman will always be remembered for the characters he played more than the personality he is and that what makes him a true actor, a great actor.

KAKURO

How to play kakuro

SCRIBBLING PAD

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

ebastien Ogier was forced out of the Acropolis Rally on Friday after running into mechanical problems during the first special between Kineta and Pissia. After posting the fastest time in the qualifying special, Ogier opted to start 11th and last of the top drivers but the move backfired as he failed to complete the opening 47.7km stage on punishing roads.

I’m going for the World Cup (stage 2) from June 10-16. After that there will be trials and team selection for the third and fourth World Cup stages,” she said.

eeded seventh, Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta will spearhead the Indian challenge at the Grand Europe Albena Chess tournament that gets underway in Albena. With as many as 28 Grandmasters registered for the 30,000 Euros prize money tournament, it will be a tough challenge for Abhijeet who starts as the seventh seed in the event.

Wiggins out of France Tour

Chris, Alberto in pre TDF showdown

LONDON: Defending champion

PARIS: The eight stage Criterium de Dauphine which begins on Sunday in the Swiss city of Champery will give a clear indication of what kind of form Tour de France contenders Chris Froome and Alberto Contador are in ahead of the 100th running of the Grand Boucle, which begins on June 29. The 65th running of the Dauphine is the ideal tune-up for cycling’s biggest race and a challenging route that begins for the first time in Switzerland features an individual time-trial on stage 3, with three tough days of climbing sandwiched around a flat stage before a final mountainous test on the way to Risoul on June 9. All the leading teams building up to the Tour de France will be on the start line, including heavyweight outfits Team Sky, led by Froome, Contador’s Team SaxoTinkoff as well as French outfit Europcar, who are led by former Tour yellow jersey holder Thomas Voeckler. Froome finished second on the Tirenno-Adriatico earlier this season.

Bradley Wiggins (right) has been ruled out of the Tour de France due to a knee injury. Team Sky boss Dave Brailsford said: “With illness, injury and treatment Brad has gone past the point where he can be ready for the Tour. “It’s a big loss but, given these circumstances, we won’t consider him for selection.” The British cyclist’s challenge at the Giro d’Italia faded after he was hit by a chest infection and a knee problem. Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme said he expected the decision but was slightly surprised. “We had a feeling it was coming,” said Prudhomme. “It’s a half surprise even a quarter of a surprise after he pulled out of the Giro. I was in England last week and the press gave the impression that it was more serious than we first thought,” “He hasn’t had great results this season even if he was getting stronger at the beginning of the Giro, with the victory in the team time-trial. “It is not that rare (for a defending champion to pull out), especially during the 80’s. It was thanks to Bernard (Hinault) pulling out in 1983 that we got to see Laurent Fignon’s victory,” he added about the late Frenchman.

“Wiggins will undoubtedly be more motivated at the start of the 2014 Tour which begins in Yorkshire.” concluded Prudhomme. Wiggins had been scheduled to ride in support of Team Sky leader Chris Froome in the 100th edition of the Tour de France, which starts in Corsica on June 29, but Brailsford said a lack of training time meant the Briton would miss out. Andersen suspended for game six NEW YORK: Miami Heat forward Chris Andersen has been suspended for game six of the NBA Eastern Conference finals after shoving Indiana Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough in game five. The incident occurred with 9:02 remaining in the second quarter of Miami’s 90-79 win over the Pacers in Miami on Thursday. Andersen elbowed Hansbrough to the floor, and after the two bumped chests he shoved the Pacers player, then “resisted efforts to bring the altercation to an end,” the NBA said in a statement. Andersen was assessed a

flagrant foul, but league officials upgraded it from a flagrant one to a more serious flagrant two category. Andersen’s absence will be a blow for the NBA champion Heat, who hold a 3-2 series lead and can return to the NBA finals with a victory in game six at Indiana on Saturday. Andersen is 15-for-15 from the field in the series. The winner of the Eastern Conference finals will face Western Conference champions San Antonio in the NBA title series starting next Thursday. AFP

peration after the Giro, Wiggins was unable to train with any intensity and wasn’t in shape to compete at this month’s Criterium du Dauphine or Tour of Switzerland. “He hasn’t been able to train hard since the Giro and now he needs further rest. Whilst we all know these things happen in sport, it doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a huge disappointment for everyone in the team - and above all for Brad,”

said Brailsford. “It’s incredibly sad to have the reigning champion at Team Sky but not lining up at the Tour. But he’s a champion, a formidable athlete and will come back winning as he has before.” Wiggins said it was a “huge disappointment not to make the Tour”. “I desperately wanted be there, for the team and for all the fans along the way - but it’s not going to happen. “I can’t train the way I need to train and I’m not going to be ready. Once you accept that, it’s almost a relief not having to worry about the injury and the race against time. “I’ve been through this before, when I broke my collarbone, so I know how it works. I’ll get this sorted, set new goals for this season and focus on those.” Team doctor Richard Freeman said Wiggins’ chest infection had “completely cleared up”. “However, further medical investigations on the knee injury that we were managing at the Giro showed the condition was more significant than we thought,” Freeman said. “It has needed intensive treatment and, whilst it will be fully resolved, Bradley now needs to rest completely for five days before a gradual, return to full training over a period of two AFP to three weeks.”

Tiger stranded in the woods DUBLIN, UNITED STATES: Defending champion Tiger Woods made little headway Friday in his bid for a sixth US PGA Memorial tournament title, firing a secondround 74 that left him 10 shots short of the early second-round lead. American Bill Haas seized the clubhouse lead with a five-under par 67 at Muirfield Village that included a birdie-eagle-birdie run on the front nine. Haas was in the clubhouse on nine-under par 135, with overnight leader Charl Schwartzel sevenunder for the tournament through five holes on a windy afternoon in Ohio. World number one Woods, who opened with a one-under 71 on Thursday, teed off on 10 and soon found himself losing ground with a

bogey at 13. At the 15th he rolled an eight-footer for par past the hole and missed the putt coming back to make a double-bogey. Woods — a four-time winner on the PGA Tour already this season — bounced back with birdies at the two par-fives on the front nine, but

for the second day in a row capped his round with a bogey, this one coming at the par-four ninth to complete a 74 and a total of 145. Woods is not in danger of missing the cut, but Chinese teenager Guan Tianlang was set to miss the weekend after following up his firstround 72 with a 79. The 14-year-old prodigy won low amateur honours at the Masters in April, when he became the youngest player to compete at Augusta National. He followed that up by making the cut at the PGA tournament in New Orleans, but missed the cut in the Byron Nelson Championship. Guan will test himself in another US PGA Tour event next week, having accepted a sponsor’s exemption for the St. Jude Classic in Memphis.

The weekend’s two races will mark the first time that IndyCar has held two full-length races at a venue on the same weekend. The street circuits in Toronto and Houston also will host double-headers this season. “I think it’s going to be extremely brutal on the drivers," said Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan of Brazil. “One race is hard enough. Two in a weekend is going to be extremely tough." If a driver wins both Saturday’s and Sunday’s races, it will be worth a $50,000 bonus. If no one wins both races, the prize fund carries over to the doubleheader at Toronto, and if the bonus AFP isn’t claimed there to Houston.

What Franchitti won’t enjoy, however, is the top spot on the starting grid, on which he’ll start 11th because of a penalty incurred for an unapproved engine change at Indianapolis. E.J. Jutanugarn, Blumenherst share LPGA lead GALLOWAY, NEW JERSEY: LPGA rookie Moriya Jutanugarn and fourth-year pro Amanda Blumenherst shared the first-round lead on Friday in the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Thailand’s Moriya nabbed six birdies with just one bogey in her opening round of five-under 66 to seize a share of the overnight lead for the first time in an LPGA event. While her 17-year-old sister Ariya has garnered most of the headlines this year with a Ladies European Tour win in March, 18-year-old Moriya has been quietly building a solid season on the LPGA Tour. She currently leads the Rookie of the Year race and is eager to take advantage of the steady opening round she delivered on a day when scoring got worse as the round wore on. “This course is going to be really windy in the afternoon, so we’re lucky because we played in the morning," Moriya said. “My game today, I hit it in the fairway a lot, so it kept me in the places that are easy to play. “But the greens were getting firmer and firmer. It’s in good shape, but you have to see where you can miss it and where you cannot." Blumenherst, who won the 2008 US Women’s Amateur championship, had an eagle and four birdies in her round, a confidence booster for a player who has missed the cut in six of her eight starts this season. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a very solid round of golf and felt like I just played well throughout the entire day," the American said. “It was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun out there because it’s been a challenging start to the season." The leading duo had a one-shot lead over defending champion and world number two Stacy Lewis. Lewis capped her 67 with her fifth birdie of the day AFP on the par-five ninth.

Ireland’s Rankin gets England call LONDON: Former Ireland seamer Boyd Rankin (right) was called up Friday into England’s one-day squad for the remaining two matches of their series with New Zealand. The 28-year-old, who plays county cricket for Warwickshire, was brought in after pacemen Stuart Broad (knee) and Steven Finn (shin) were ruled out of the first two ODIs

through injury. Rankin made his debut for England’s second string Lions in 2011 against Sri Lanka A and was selected on the England Performance Programme later that year. He played 37 one-day internationals for Ireland and was their leading wicket-taker at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean with 12 wickets at 27. England captain Alastair

Cook, speaking after a fivewicket loss to New Zealand in the first one-day international at Lord’s, said the 6ft 7in (2.01 metres) Rankin’s height had worked in his favour. “When you’ve got five bowlers you want as much variety as you can. When you lose two tall bowlers, you want to try to replace them with another tall bowler," Cook explained. AFP

‘Something significant to happen in a day’ NEW DELHI: A day after two of its senior functionaries called it quits, the crisis-hit BCCI's Vice President Arun Jaitley (right) said the next 24 hours could bring about a "significant" development in the unfolding drama. The under-fire N Srinivasan's adamant stand of sticking on to the post of BCCI President despite the damaging IPL spot-fixing scam last night prompted Board Treasurer Ajay Shirke and Secretary Sanjay Jagdale to resign in protest. "Wait for a day, you will hear something significant," said Jaitley when asked if the five Vice Presidents of the Board, including him, could put in their papers today. The crisis in the BCCI has deepened with every passing day after Srinivasan's son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan was arrested for alleged involvement in betting. Srinivasan, whose company India Cements owns CSK, refused to resign despite repeated calls for his ouster, insisting that he did no wrong. He has, however, convened an Emergency Working Committee meeting next week hours after information spilled out that the ICC had warned

President N Srinivasan arrived here tonight, returning home after a hectic week which saw pressure mounting on him to quit in the wake of the IPL spotfixing and betting scandal. Srinivasan arrived by a Go Air flight from Mumbai around 9.30 pm but declined to respond to questions from the large contingent of mediapersons waiting at the airport. He landed here shortly after BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale and Treasurer Ajay Shirke quit from their respective posts in a bid to put pressure on him. Jagdale, Shirke quit NEW DELHI: Two top BCCI officials — secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke — on Friday quit from their respective posts in a bid to put pressure on beleaguered Cricket Board President N Srinivasan in the wake of the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal. Jagdale said he quit from his post as he was deeply hurt by the current crisis that has hit Indian cricket. "Yes, that's true, I have resigned from the post of honorary secretary of BCCI," Jagdale said. "I don't want to comment further but I am deeply hurt by the recent developments in Indian cricket. I thought it's better to get out so that some new faces come in and deal with it in a better way," he added. He, however, refused to divulge the details of the resignation letter sent to Srinivasan. "I can't comment about the resignation letter I have written to the President. It's proper to inform the President and I have done that. Jagdale said he would no longer be part of the three-man inquiry commission set up by the BCCI to go into allegations against Srinivasan's son-in-low and CSK Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan, who was arrested on charges of betting in IPL, and Rajasthan Royals franchise. "I have already expressed my inability to be part of the commission," Jagdale said. "I can't comment on whether other BCCI members would follow suit and resign." He declined to comment on whether Srinivasan should also tender his resignation. Shirke also confirmed his resignation. "I have spelt out my reasons (for resignation). I don't want to comment any further. I have already spoken to the media at length," Srirke said. Shirke said he was not cajoled by PTI Srinivasan not to quit.

Guptill ton sees New Zealand to victory LONDON: Martin Guptill's unbeaten century saw New Zealand return to winning ways as they beat England by five wickets in the first one-day international at Lord's on Friday. Guptill made 103 not out, his third century in 70 ODIs, as New Zealand, chasing 228 for victory, finished on 231 for five with 19 balls to spare. Victory left New Zealand 1-0 up in a three-match series ahead of Sunday's second ODI in Southampton. Guptill could only look on as New Zealand were reduced to one for two after James Anderson struck twice in the first over of their reply Luke Ronchi was out for nought on his New Zealand debut, having previously played for Australia where he grew up, after Graeme Swann held a sharp second slip catch off Lancashire seamer Anderson. Two balls later Kane Williamson also fell for a duck, superbly caught low down by diving wicket-keeper Jos Buttler. Just a few weeks ago, New Zealand's last visit to Lord's had seen them collapse to 68 all out in a 170-run first Test defeat. And further batting failures were behind a crushing 247-run loss that saw England complete a 2-0 Test series whitewash at Headingley on Tuesday. But thoughts of an equally dramatic slump on Friday were stilled by a third-wicket stand of 120 between Guptill and Ross

Taylor (54). Guptill had a reprieve when on 13 he hooked first change Chris Woakes down to long leg. But a back-pedalling Tim Bresnan, who was not right back on the rope, failed to hold the chance and deflected the ball for a six. However, the third-wicket duo's stand did end when Taylor was caught behind to give Anderson his third wicket of the innings. England, without injured fast bowlers Stuart Broad (knee) and Steven Finn (shin) for the first two matches of this series, later saw Surrey quick Jade Dernbach, often expensive on his previous international appearances, brilliantly driven for six over long-on by Guptill. Another six, also off Dernbach, took Guptill into the 90s. On 99 Guptill came through a leg before appeal from Bresnan after England incorrectly challenged Aleem Dar's original not out decision. Still on 99, Guptill was then beaten on the outside edge by Bresnan, the ball going for four byes to leave the scores level. But next ball he hit the winning runs to complete his hundred with a pulled four off Bresnan. Guptill faced 123 balls including four sixes and eight fours. Earlier, Tim Southee led New Zealand's attack with three for 37 after Black Caps caps skipper Brendon McCullum AFP won the toss.

But at one for two, after both Luke Ronchi and Kame Williamson fell for ducks to James Anderson in the first over of their reply, it seemed they were destined for more Lord's misery. But a third wicket stand of 120 between Guptill (103 not out) and Ross Taylor (54) revived the innings. Opener Guptill was the first New Zealand batsman to make a one-day international century at Lord's and only the second Kiwi to do so anywhere in England, after Mark Greatbatch achieved the feat twice in 1990. This win put the Black Caps' 1-0 up in the threeAFP match series.

ANGRY NADAL eyes last 16 Nadal hopes to use his anger over the scheduling to fire into the last 16 while Djokovic takes on Grigor Dimitrov in a mouth-watering clash. David JAMES

PARIS: Rafael Nadal (in pic) hopes to use his anger over French Open scheduling to fire him into the last 16 on Saturday while world number one Novak Djokovic takes on Grigor Dimitrov in a mouthwatering clash. Defending champion Nadal, bidding to become the first man to win the same Grand Slam title eight times, faces colourful Italian 27th seed Fabio Fognini who he beat in straight sets in Rome two weeks ago. The Spaniard will be playing for the second successive day while Fognini, who made the

quarter-finals in 2011, had the luxury of a day off on Friday. "The schedule was wrong, it was a bad decision," said Nadal, after his attempt to play his third round match against Martin Klizan on Thursday was foiled by the rain. He was furious that he had been scheduled as third match on Court Suzanne Lenglen, despite warnings of the weather closing in and with Fognini having finished his match, second up, on an outside court in the early evening. Nadal was further incensed when he was told that Fognini had been given an earlier start time because he and opponent

Azarenka, and their rivalry is currently the biggest draw in the women's game. Neither was troubled on Friday as the rain that had bedevilled Thursday's play let up to be replaced by cold, blustery conditions. Defending champion Sharapova was first up, needing only four games and a handful of minutes to finish off her second round tie 62, 6-4 against Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard.

and Maria Sharapova stayed firmly on course for a showdown in the French Open final on Friday by swatting aside overmatched opponents. They were joined in the last 16 by two other former champions — Ana Ivanovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova — while the 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy made it through to the third round. Williams and

said Nadal after needing four sets to beat Klizan on Friday. "I cannot play third when my opponent has played second. The excuse they gave me was that they had to play doubles, but that's a joke. In that case I should sign up for doubles to be a priority." Top seed Novak Djokovic, who needs a French Open to become just the eighth man to complete the career Grand Slam, faces 22-year-old Dimitrov, just weeks after the Bulgarian stunned the 26-year-old Serb in Madrid. Dimitrov, who has spent his formative years shaking off comparisons to Roger Federer,

will be playing in the third round of a major for the first time. "He's still young and he has definitely potential to be one of the top players, but it's a very long way for him," said Djokovic. Also in third round action on Saturday are defending women's champion Maria Sharapova who faces China's Zheng Jie. The Russian holds a 2-1 lead over Zheng although the Chinese will be buoyed by her win in Indian Wells in 2010. Third seeded Victoria Azarenka, the Australian Open champion, faces French 31st seed Alize Cornet in the opening match on Court Philippe Chatrier. AFP

Fedex in way of French dream

PARIS: France's big three of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon all won on Friday to boost home hopes of celebrating a male singles champion at Roland Garros for the first time in 30 years. Yannick Noah was the last French player to hold aloft the Coupe de Mousquetaires after he defeated Mats Wilander in the 1983 final and since then only Henri Leconte has made it through to the final, losing to Wilander in 1988. But in Tsonga, Gasquet and Simon, the French have three former stars of the junior ranks who have been touted as potential Paris winners over the past few years. None of the three have yet made it past the quarter-finals to date, but this year all three appear to have hit top form at just the right time. Tsonga reached the last 16 with an impressive 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 win over coun-

tryman Jeremy Chardy, Simon joined him by beating American Sam Querrey 2-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, 62, while Gasquet made it through to the third round in defeating Michal Przysiezny of Poland 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in a rain-delayed match. All talk of just a third French winner of the French Open since World War II, however, was diplomatically downplayed by the three home hopes. Tsonga, who let slip four match points in last

year's quarter-finals against Novak Djokovic, next takes on Serbia's Victor Troicki, with second seed Roger Federer (above) a potential quarter-final opponent. Next up for Federer, though, is Simon, having defeated another Frenchman, Julien Benneteau, in the third round. Simon knows what it feels like to better Federer, having a highly respectable career record against the Swiss legend with two wins in five AFP encounters.
