SECURITY BREACH

At mental hospital, you can check out any time you like Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda has a serious security lapse — not the making of the faculty but of outside elements — owing to government apathy. N SHIVA KUMAR

PADMINI C feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Earlier last week, a serial killer responsible for the deaths of 13 women in the City was finally pinned down. What was shocking about the case was not only the brutality of the crime involved but also the fact that the criminal had been caught once before, tried and convicted for life. He was being held at the Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda until he escaped in December 2011 and went on to commit five more murders. The incident brings back the focus on the issue of security in government health facilities. After all, the scene at any government hospital is nauseatingly familiar — patients overflowing, hapless relatives hanging by, doctors and nurses making an appearance now and then, and in the background, visitors coming and going at all hours. Patients are wheeled in and out, crimes are routinely committed, infants are abandoned or sold off, and still there’s nobody watching. But the prospect of a security lapse becomes all the more chilling when it comes to the Institute of Mental Health. At any given time, the facility has over 600 patients who are all suffering from mental illnesses, ranging from psychosis and schizophrenia to dependence disorders and clinical depression. Even more seriously, the

institute has a dedicated prisoner’s ward where disturbed convicts and under-trials are held. Yet, despite the potentially dangerous and particularly vulnerable patient body, the 55acre facility continues to be manned by only 13 private security guards and a few City Armed Reserve personnel (specially intended for the prisoner’s ward). This was shown to be inadequate in 2011 when six prisoners convicted of murder escaped from the ward, and now in 2013, when numerous cases of patient escapes are currently lodged at the SR Nagar police station. With over 300 prospective

patients arriving at their gates each day, things are bound to be a little chaotic but security really is a non-issue for the managers, maintain some insiders. “The [prison] wing is their [government’s] responsibility. The general attitude is that who will want anything from here? So break-ins are not that much of a worry. Now, most of the patients are here by consent, so there’s no threat of escapes and such. There are a few cases now and then but when compared to number of people we see every day, it’s nothing,” says a staff member, brushing it off. Many fail to understand that those mentally imbalanced can’t be there on their own volition. Patients, however, are a little more concerned. Narsamma, 62, who has come to IMH for her husband’s treatment, says that she is here only because it’s

free. “There are many who have been abandoned here and many who have disappeared. But who cares about poor, ‘mental’ people?” she says. To further complicate matters, the compound wall (see pic) of the hospital has been breached in several places by what authorities say are “antisocial” elements. And now security has become a key challenge, admits the superintendent Dr V Pramod Kumar. “Yes, it is an issue. The compound wall is not secure. Some anti-social elements have breached it repeatedly. Every time we patch it up, they break it down again. So we are facing stiff resistance. We have approached the police about this but there has been no progress so far,” he confesses. The police remained unavailable for comment.

Alaskan village loses to big oil WASHINGTON: Perched at the tip of an Arctic barrier reef in harsh northwestern Alaska, a tiny village took on big oil for causing the climate change that is eroding its shores, but lost its court fight Monday. The US Supreme Court declined to hear the case of Kivalina vs. Exxon. Therefore, a lower court’s decision stands, holding that energy companies cannot be sued collectively for harm done by climate change and leaving such issues to lawmakers and the executive branch of government. The village of Kivalina is home to about 400 people, mostly Inupiat Native Alaskans, and is being forced to relocate because global warming has led AROUND THE

WORLD

to a reduction in sea ice that once protected its shores. The lawsuit was brought in 2008 against 22 energy companies, including ExxonMobil Corporation, BP, Chevron and Shell, seeking damages under a federal common law claim of “public nuisance”. The suit alleged that “massive greenhouse gas emissions emitted by the Energy Producers have resulted in global warming, which, in turn, has severely eroded the land where the City of Kivalina sits and threatens it with imminent destruction”. A buildup in greenhouse gases is increasing the temperature of the planet, causing sea levels to rise, ice caps to melt and “destroying its land by melting the Arctic sea ice that formerly protected the village from storms,” court documents said. Auto driver dies of burns, suicide suspected

Gold, cash stolen from Saidabad home

Mayor’s bid to stem flash floods

Illegal floors of building demolished

HYDERABAD: Putting pressure on Congress for creation of T-state, four Congress leaders — former MP K Kesava Rao and MPs Manda Jagannatha (Nagar Kurnool), Vivek (Peddapalli) and Rajaiah (Warangal) met the TRS chief. This follows their stance that they would keep their options open if Congress did not announce T state by this month-end.

MALKAJGIRI: An auto driver, A Bharath, 24, was found dead with severe burns in Malkajgiri. It is believed he committed suicide by pouring petrol on his clothes and setting them ablaze. Hearing his screams, locals shifted him to hospital where he died. He reportedly was in trouble after a neighbour threatened him for taunting his wife.

SAIDABAD: Ten tolas of gold and some cash were stolen from the house of a kirana merchant, K Shivraj, a resident of Jeevanjyoti Sangham of Saidabad area. The house owner and his family had gone to a relative’s house on Sunday for attending a function when burglars broke into the home and made away with the valuables.

HYDERABAD: As part of precautionary measures for monsoon, the mayor has directed officials to list stagnation points and make sure flooding is averted this year. In a review meeting conducted for Charminar Assembly constituency, along with Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri, he directed the GHMC officials to complete ‘nallah desilting’.

TOLICHOWKI: Town planning officials of Circle-7 under the supervision of zonal commissioner (central zone) demolished unauthorised construction of third and fourth floors of a building in Al Hasnath Colony, Tolichowki. The owner had obtained permission for ground+1 floor and constructed 4 floors in violation of status quo orders.

POSTNOON EXCLUSIVE

Dowry Act ineffectual in protecting women Women’s organisation Shaheen swears that dowry cases lead to torture of women, and Muslim women in Old City are the worst hit by this scourge. suicide, said that a daughter-inlaw must be treated as a family member and not the domestic help. Rihana Khanum, an advocate who handles the legal requirements of Shaheen, says, “Old City is filled with cases of domestic violence. Many a times women, being illiterate, do not know whom to consult and end up being a liability.”

Mohd SUBHAN and NEHA DWIVEDI feedback@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: It’s reflective of society’s skewed perception of the reprehensible dowry system that the police take cognisance of the dowry taker, not the giver. Both bribe and dowry have a giver and taker, and yet, the City police have not moved against those who admit to having given dowry, Postnoon finds out. Section 498a of the IPC prohibits giving and taking dowry. It is decreed, “If any person, after the commencement of this Act, gives or takes or abets the giving or taking of dowry, he shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than five years, and with the fine which shall not be less than `15,000 or the amount of the value of such dowry, whichever is more. Provided that the court may, for adequate and special reasons to be recorded in the judgment, impose a sentence of imprisonment for a term of less than five years.” From April 2011 to March 2012, 440 cases of dowry harassment were registered in the City but not in a single instance have the parents of the girl, the givers AROUND THE

of dowry, been arraigned. When the subject was broached with City police commissioner Anurag Sharma, he said, “Haan action to lena chahiye (Yes, action should be taken against dowry givers too).” Police officers, when quizzed, admitted that they have not looked seriously into this aspect of dowry. It is mainly because the girls suffer at the hands of their in-laws and often physical and mental torture is involved, that transcends the dowry realm and gets into criminal offences, explained a senior officer. Legal circles too admit the sickly issues of dowry and illtreatment of wives have not been properly understood. “In the instances when a newlywed wife gives in writing a complaint of dowry paid to her husband at the time of marriage,

the law can move against (her) parents too. This may discourage victims from seeking help,” said a lawyer, Rakesh Bhushan.

SHAHEEN’S LOSING BATTLE

“My husband beats me like hell. My in-laws have refused to help me or take the responsibility of my three children,” says Raushan Baig, a wife in her 20s who left her studies to marry the love of her life. “It was a mistake. Thanks to Shaheen, I will now be able to complete my graduation.” In the backdrop of escalating crimes against women in the City, Shaheen, a women’s welfare organisation in the congested bylanes of Old City, encourages women to rise higher and fight for their rights. Founded in 2002, the organisation has helped many women overcome their fears and realise their true value. Jamila Nishat, founder of Shaheen, says “Women, from the time they are born, are made to understand that they are the weak gender. They are expected to be shy, soft and sweet.” Says Tanay

cases of dowry deaths were reported across the country in 2009, according to statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau.

Agarwal, a law student who is doing research on women rights: “There is a constant battle between culture and modernisation. Our society expects a woman to respect her husband irrespective of his behaviour and attitude towards her.” While Hyderabad may not exactly be like Delhi in terms crimes against women, it surely is not too far behind. As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics of 2012, for 3,584 crimes reported in the year, 141 were rape cases. Asmat, an active member of Shaheen who also handles domestic violence cases, says, “We receive many cases of domestic violence. We usually start by calling both parties and hearing their arguments. It is only after proper investigation that we take the case further as there have been reports of women filing fake cases against their husbands. We then see if there is any possibility of settlement.” Recently, the apex court, while sentencing a man to five years in jail for torturing his wife because of which she committed

From April 2011 to March 2012, 440 cases of dowry harassment were registered. Jamila says, “Cases of violence and harassment are surely going up but that is because women are coming ahead and voicing their concerns.” Awareness and voice go hand in hand and education is one of the means to acknowledge your rights. Cases of violence against Muslim women are much higher. Jamila says, “According to Islam, girls on approaching puberty must get married. She cannot be alone and must therefore be dependent on a man. They must also respect their decision but that isn’t the case. From childhood, we are taught that the father is the head of the family and only he has the capability of taking crucial decisions.” She also blames women for their condition. “Women tend to accept the fact that they are weak and incapable. In 2004, Muslim women were offered the posts of constables but no woman came forward. If they themselves do not believe in their strength, then what can we do?” On a recent case of a fiveyear-old girl being raped in New Delhi, Jamila says, “Due to the fear of AIDS, men have started raping children. The guilty must at any cost be prosecuted irrespective of his age. “A child is no longer innocent; the internet gives him enough exposure. There is no point in blaming the psychology of the child when he commits the crime in full senses.” ‘If all men are born free, how is it that all women are born slaves?’: These words of Mary Astell have managed to provoke the fairer sex. Shaheen knows how to deal with it. It has been working to help women know their rights and will continue to do so.

JNTU cuts down syllabus The ‘Outcome-based Learning’ introduced by JNTU for the engineering stream is widely being encouraged by the students.

AROUND THE

ALEENA ALICE aleena.t@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: It’s a struggle of four years to get an engineering degree. So, if you thought that you could secure a good grade by studying just five units and leaving the remaining three units, that won’t work anymore due to the new syllabus pattern introduced by JNTU for the engineering stream. From this academic year (2013-2014), JNTU will be changing its syllabus pattern by reducing the syllabus from eight units to five units in all colleges of Hyderabad and Kakinada. Though the number of units have decreased, students will not have as many choices as they had previously, where they could pick any five. This method is similar to the exam pattern being followed by Osmania University. According to the new pattern in the question paper, Section A will have 10

This is a good step of changing the syllabus because now the focus will shift from scoring good marks to focusing on studying the subject. Sudents will be less burdened and score good grades. J Surender JNTU JAC questions for 25 marks and all the questions will have to be answered. Section B will contain 5 questions with an internal choice from every unit, where students will have to answer either A or B of the five questions. The new implementation will also bring JNTU on par with international standards. After the recent tie-up of the university with the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for the recognition in Universities oversees, and also the agreement with the American Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), the JNTU has introduced the concept of “Outcome-based Learning”. Students will be given weekly tests and exercises in every unit to check their progress. “With the new syllabus, students will have more time to concentrate on every unit and this will help them score better marks,” said NV Ramana Rao, registrar of JNTU.

He was earlier sacked from Infosys on similar charges. “The Board’s decision was made as a result of an investigation by outside legal counsel, engaged by the Board, of the facts and circumstances surrounding a relationship Murthy had with a subordinate employee and a claim of sexual harassment,” iGATE said in a statement. The ongoing investigation has reached the finding that Murthy’s failure to report this relationship violated iGATE’s policy, as well as Murthy’s employment contract. Meanwhile, the board has appointed Gerhard Watzinger as President and CEO on an interim basis. All changes are effective immediately. It is to be noted that Murthy was earlier sacked from Infosys as he had faced a sexual harassment charge from his personal secretary which was settled by Infosys in May 2003. The statement further said, a Search Committee within the Board of Directors has been created, which will oversee the process for the identification and selection of a new president and CEO. Egypt faces pressure to end alcohol sale Liquor stores have now come under societal pressure to close down. CAIRO: Egypt’s liquor stores are under growing pressure to stop selling alcohol, not from the Islamist government, but from society itself. The shelves of Amir Aziz’s central Cairo premises are stacked with beer, wine and spirits, but they are invisible from the street. Aziz says the mood has changed drastically since the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak and brought Islamists to power.

There are no restrictions from the government, it's the people who are giving us trouble, says a store owner. “I don't think the government will ban alcoholic drinks because they generate a lot of revenue from taxes. Also, we

have had no problems with the government so far. Our problems are always with the Salafists (ultra-conservative

Islamists) who harass us violently,” said Aziz, who renewed his shop’s alcohol licence. Consuming alcohol is banned under Sharia, Islamic law, the main source of legislation according to Egypt’s new constitution. “Drinking alcohol is a personal issue,” said Galal, a customer at Drinkies. “It’s not for anyone to interfere.” Earlier in May, gunmen opened fire on a cafe in the north Sinai town of El-Arish

The plant has the capacity of processing only 150 kilolitres, which is just about half of the City’s daily production of municipal solid wastes, though it is considered as a big leap for the beginning. “Earlier we were storing this in a huge sump to avoid contamination of the groundwater,” explained the official. “But the problem can be solved to a large extent.” The GHMC, working in collaboration with Ramky, introduced the idea of treating the leachate after groundwater pollution in Jawahar Nagar area comprising 11 villages turned acute. ‘Relief’ on the way as State plans 5 lakh toilets INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: In a revolutionary step that could give relief to thousands of residents of the State who are deprived of toilets in their homes, the State government has decided to construct five lakh private toilets in all the districts. The move of the State government is primarily aimed at putting a check on open defecation, a menace marring the healthy environment across the State. As part of its grand plan, the housing department would undertake the task of constructing the private toilets across the state in coordination with other agencies during the current financial year. AROUND THE

CITY

Many poor families are not able to construct toilets due to lack of money and skill. Keeping these things in mind, our government is implementing the private toilet construction scheme. We strongly feel that the scheme would not only help the poor people in avoiding open defecation,” a senior official of housing department told Postnoon on Monday. Minister for housing N Uttam Kumar Reddy recently held a review meeting on the issue and directed the officials to ensure that the department achieved the target in time bound manner. The minister said that in villages lack of private toilets in residences is a matter of self respect for every family. “We want all the people to benefit from our scheme. Having a private toilet is as important as having an own house,” he said. It would cost `10,000 to construct one toilet. During the current fiscal the state government had set up a target of constructing five lakh toilets. Interestingly, there is rider to this. If the State achieves the target of 5 lakh toilets during the ongoing fiscal, the Central government would allocate budget to construct five lakh more toilets as an incentive. The minister had revealed that the government is going to organise an Indiramma Avagahana Sadassulu (Indira Sensitisation programme) to create awareness among the people of the state including the beneficiaries of various housing schemes.

Beijing will support Chinese enterprises to increase investments in India and help Indian products have access to Chinese market. NEW DELHI: Chinese Premier Li Keqiang today said India and China have the “wisdom” to find mutually acceptable solution to the boundary problem and the two countries have not shied away from addressing the vexing issue. Li also said China will support its enterprises to increase investments in India and help Indian products have access to Chinese market as he supported a favourable trade balance in a bid to decrease mounting bilateral trade deficit. The trade imbalance is currently around $30 billion. A day after two rounds of talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here, Li said China has the intention of “sincerely” resolving the pending issues, including that of cross-border rivers, and favoured increased bilateral relations between the “two big neighbours.” Supporing a favourable trade balance and seeking to decrease trade deficit between India and China, he said Beijing will support Chinese enterprises to increase investments in India and help Indian products have access to Chinese market. Stressing on the need for increased people-to-people interaction between India and China, Li declared 2014 as the year of exchanges between the two nations “so as to boost our understanding and friendship”. Li favoured peace and stability in the South-East Asia region and hoped the “relevant issues” will be resolved soon. “We have also discussed issues of regional security. We hope there is peace and stability in South Asia and a stable South-East Asia is consistent with China's interests,” he said adding that Beijing will always be a “strong defender” of world peace. Li said peaceful co-existence between India and China will be of global significance and they should seek co-operation from not afar but closely. The co-operation between the two countries will induct a “new dynamism” in its relations, he said. Noting that China is still a developing country, he said, “I want the voice of developing countries to be stronger. China and India are linked to each other through natural boundaries. Hurdles galore UPA for polls Most analysts agree that a government that spent most of the last four years fighting corruption charges is wounded as it prepares for the coming poll battle. AROUND THE

NATION

NEW DELHI: Corruption scandals past and present have cast long shadows on the Manmohan Singh led UPA government that completes four years of its second term May 22, amid a big question mark on whether it will be back for a third time.

Most analysts agree that a government that spent most of the last four years battling corruption charges is wounded as it prepares for the coming electoral battle. There is however some divide on whether it will win it, with some arguing that there is no serious alternative

and others that the road ahead is tough indeed. According to Nisar-ul Haq, who teaches political science at Jamia Millia Islamia University, the UPA has a fighting chance as “there is no alternative to the Congress in national politics”. “Corruption charges will have little impact on the polls. People at large believe Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is an honest person,” Haq told IANS. Veteran journalist and commentator Shravan Garg was less optimistic. “The so-called good governance during UPA I was actually based on underlying corruption, which surfaced during UPA II,” he said.

Assessing the UPA’s chances, he said the Congress was likely to gain vote share in the five Assembly polls year-end after winning in Karnataka but “may not be able to repeat the feat in the 2014 General Election”.

CHANGSA (CHINA): The kidnap, rape and forced prostitution of her daughter set Tang Hui on a mission to seek justice. But it was Chinese authorities’ repeated obstructions, even detaining her, that made her a die-hard activist. For seven years she has fought against the men who violated her child, and the system that blocked her, becoming a cause celebre in 2012 after her efforts landed her in a labour camp. The public outcry over her sentence led to her release and Tang resumed her crusade, but she refuses to give up. “The biggest change for me has been that I no longer believe there is justice in this society,” Tang said in an interview in Changsha. But, she added: “For sure I will persevere.” Tang set out demanding punishment for seven men who in 2006 forced her daughter, who was 11 at that time, into sex work, and for a dozen police she says raped her child and falsified evidence to protect the abductors. MSMEs can count on SBH MD Bhagavantha Rao outlines the bank’s policy and vision for the industry.

PRUDHVI RAJU K prudhvi.k@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The slowdown in the economy is a temporary phase and banks can successfully overcome this, says State Bank of Hyderabad managing director M Bhagavantha Rao. In an exclusive interview to Postnoon, he explains about the current challenges and future prospects of banking industry and SBH in particular. Growing NPAs or slow growth in the industry did not stop Rao from being bullish on future prospects. “With great supervision and policies from the RBI, there is no need to be apprehensive. The efforts of financial inclusion are pushing up the demand for banking. We expect to see a major growth in banking especially in rural and semi-urban areas. As more people graduate and get jobs, this will push growth. The slowdown is temporary and I don’t see any dip in banking industry.”

“Why are so many applicants queueing up to start banks if the situation is fragile?” he bolsters his argument. “Undoubtedly, we have to be prudent in the current scenario. But we will overcome this situation in near future.” Asked how can banks balance prudence and extend helping hand to the sectors in this tough times, he says, “It is not difficult. The bottom line is that the productive sectors of the economy should not suffer. In terms of infrastructure, we are not going to back off from the committed projects but however may not take fresh exposure till this scenario change. However, this is a dynamic situation, which will change every 3-6 months. Likewise, our policy is not decided for the whole year. What I say is determined as we see it today. However, we will change this according to the need,” SBH announced this fiscal as a MSME year, where in the bank wants to increase its exposure to

MSMEs by sanctioning considerable number of loans. “We want to give more emphasis on micro industries in this. This idea took birth from the Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs), which are initiated in each district of the country to impart training and skill up gradation of rural youth towards employment and entrepreneurship development.

“Banks manage RSETIs with active co-operation from the Centre and respective state government. We trained around 7,000 rural people. With this priority lending, the people who are unable to get employment can start their own micro enter prises.” Clarifying on MSMEs still facing difficulty in getting loans with out collateral security

despite Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises scheme, Rao said, “Generally, a bank manager is more happy with the security than with insurance. However, we see a gradual improvement in this scenario in the last six months. We started this in June last year and covered around 100 units in the first month. There is considerable growth in numbers over time and we covered around 1,000 units in March. We want to make clear from this month there would be action if the bank authority asks for collateral security.” The bank is also taking stringent action against willful commercial loan defaulters, “By taking action and announcing them as willful defaulters, they can not get loans from any of the other banks. With such actions, we could recover `7crore in April. We issued notices for around 20 people and will continue with stringent actions,” he concludes.

fficial silence about the health of Algeria’s ailing leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika, hospitalised in France last month, has fed the rumour mill over presidential elections due in less than a year. Calls have grown in the Algerian media for the constitution’s rarely mentioned Article 88 to be applied, according to which, if the president is incapacitated, power temporarily transfers to the Senate leader. Bouteflika was flown to Paris for treatment at the Val de Grace military hospital on April 27 after suffering a mini-stroke, and no pictures of him have appeared since, despite officials insisting that he is well. Ali Yahia Abdennour, a veteran opposition leader, called on Monday for Bouteflika to step down, saying his illness made his retirement after 14 years in power “essential”. “The fight for the succession is open, but everything is blocked. No initiative has been taken,” the 92-year-old lawyer and human rights activist said in an interview with popular Algerian daily El Watan. But Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal on Monday said Bouteflika is convalescing well in Paris. “He was never in danger and his health is improving day by day,” Sellal said in a statement carried by the APS news agency. “Soon President Bouteflika’s illness will be no more than an unpleasant memory.” Before the president’s latest illness, supporters within the ruling National Liberation Front (FLN) had made known their desire to see him seek a fourth term in the election next April.

THE BJP FLOPSHOW HARD TALK

PK Surendran

H

umorist Jaspal Bhatti, had he been alive, would have found stunning material for a flop show in the BJP’s behaviour of late. How the ‘national opposition party’ turned into a ‘notional’ party is a story worth caricaturing with potential for record viewing-rate. BJP, despite its ethnic moorings, has not learnt a lesson from Mahabharata. It still goes with Ramayana which is not as relevant to today’s tricky politics as Mahabharata does. If it did it would have learnt the biggest lesson—how Krishna’s race, Yadavas, waged a fratricidal war and destroyed itself. What Lord Krishna said, ‘Sambhavani yuge yuge,’ stands as an eternal truth. This party, which has had the advantages of being the opposite spectrum of India’s million-party politics, allowed to giveaway chance after chance to regain its political terra firma. Will anyone explain how this party has failed to capitalise on scam after scam threw up by the ruling alliance whose magnitude is beyond a common man’s comprehension? I, for one, for instance, had to take the help of a calculator to decide how many rupees each scam has amounted to. And, I could not still understand its size as lakh crores are still not in aam

aadmi’s realm of understanding. And, what did the party do? Its leaders, as divided as the Yadava race, went about making miserable voices, a good script for comedy serials. Its senior leaders like Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani et al forgot that finally it is our money (common tax payers’) they are talking about, not something bequeathed to them by their ancestors. After every scam, the main opposition party comes up with a probe demand, possible a JPC probe. Wah, The JPC probe! Once JPC probe is announced, the situation is back to normal.

The long and short of it all is that the Congress rides out the storm smiling to itself looking at the puerile antics of the main opposition party. It could not have asked for more. Why not? It is where the government and the opposition (the aggressor and the aggrieved) join to party to bring out a thoroughly vetted copy for the tax payers’ perusal. What more can you ask for? Never in the past had I seen a senior leader (Advani) making vicarious comments about the pathetic state of a State ruled by his party. After the humiliating defeat of the BJP in Karnataka,

Advani went on record that he had the premonition! Pray, what was he doing if he had clairvoyance? Was he Sanjaya, just making a running commentary of the war underway? This factor alone says how sickening the attitude of the party leaders at the top. What hope for the ranks and file? Then came the Modi flop show. Here again, the party behaved like a KG student holding up a photograph of Modi saying he liked this icon. And, knowing well he would be an unequal rival for the Yuvaraj Rahul, the Congress allies got enough chance to break the icon into several pieces. Instead of the seniors attempting to make the party stronger at the grassroots level and discharge its ‘Opposition Dharma’ they, much like Yadava race, began squabbling for pradhan mantri. If there is not mantri sabha,

where is the pradhan mantri? But the question did not occur to these leaders because they were blind with ambition and jealousy of each other. The long and short of it all is that the Congress rides out the storm smiling to itself looking at the puerile antics of the main opposition party. It could not have asked for more. Tailend: last heard, the Congress has dropped hints in the right places to several of the BJP senior leaders that they (each one of them separately) is the PM material. The first salvo was fired by the inimitable Mulam Singh Yadav, the current day Dronacharya (who asks for the right hand thumb of his decent disciple to finish him off). He said Advaniji is an honest person and he never lied in his life. The certificate from the Mulayam university was a great item in the LKA CV. Great show!

If anybody in India believed Xi would extend a warm friendship to this country, he should be naive. He has been on a global Sino initiative to widen the Chinese visions of the century. How China under Xi’s leadership performed the recent trickery on credulous Indian leadership is a case in point. The PLA marched well inside into the Indian territory to wrest a major concession from India. Having achieved it, he now came, wreathing in smiles and an olive branch in his buttonhole. news that the US and Chinese presidents will hold their first summit in California in June. The two global police now vying for position No.1 will thrash out issues on how to thrash the nations around. Expecting anything worthwhile from the country with the biggest territorial ambitions is an exercise in futility. One wished Indian leaders tread carefully the Chinese territory for the ground is slippery. With the benefits of hindsight one has little confidence the Indian government will ever learn the neighbour’s masks. And yet, one lives on hopes, doesn’t one? hile preparing for an interview, candidates are often advised to do their research about their prospective employers. Other dos and don’ts like never badmouth your employers or previous employers, don’t beat around the bush, answer truthfully, don’t threaten or use foul language, maintain proper body posture, be aware of your surroundings, keep your presence of mind intact and don’t argue with the interviewer. These are the standard tips that career coaches give, but many people violate all kinds of common-sense rules while answering interview questions — and get hired anyway. A thread in a question-andanswer website popular with Silicon Valley executives, provides plenty of such examples. Andy Johns, a product manager, was interviewing for a job at Facebook, a company notorious

for asking brain-teasing interview questions. The entire day had gone smoothly, and then it was his last interview. An executive walked into the room, and without introducing himself or even saying hello, just sat down and said, quite seriously, “I have five questions for you.” Johns, in an attempt to “lighten the mood,” quipped, “I have three correct answers for you.” The executive didn’t laugh and continued on with his questions, and Johns said that he only answered three of them correctly. He still got the job. Mandeep Singh, a radio jockey by profession, was once asked at an interview for an IT firm, “Why did you choose this company? Mandeep taking the advice to answer truthfully said, “To be honest, I am here for the money.” The honesty was not rewarded. Another person asked the same question replied in a slightly different manner, “My main motivation is money, anyone who says otherwise is a damned liar.” The question what does

HERE’S THE DOPE Interviews are the most stressful, nerve-wracking events that leave candidates sweating in their seats or blurting out sentences they would never have dreamed of saying to an interviewer. We take a look at the funny answers candidates came up with during interviews. your resume mean to you? Elicited this answer, “It’s a todo-works (Experiences) for a new job. Basically, it is a temporary place for sitting until we get a better experience for another better job.” Over-enthusiastic employees can also be a bit of a problem. They often end up taking the confidence thing too far. A candidate for an HR position was asked, ‘Where do you see yourself three years down the line? She answered, “In three years time? Probably in your chair asking the questions.” Wrong answer. No one like competition so early on. A candidate interviewing for a position of website developer was asked, ‘How can we make a website a success? Pat came the answer, ‘Put a name which contains at least two Os, for example- Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft.’ She was hired on the spot. Sahana Das, an HR with a firm in Dubai shares her experience, “Once while interviewing for a position in the sales

department, I asked the candidate if he believed he was responsible. ‘Yes, I am,’ he said. Why do you say so? His reply: ‘Because every place I’ve ever worked, when something went wrong in my department, they said I was responsible.’ I had a tough time keeping a straight face, and though I liked his sense of humour, the others on the board were not very convinced.” At the end of an interview, when the interviewer asks, ‘Do you have any questions for us, or something to tell us?’ They usually mean serious questions associated with work and not to ask where’s the nearest restroom. Some of the answers people gave to this question are, “Do you mind if I taped the interview? I have a trust issue with HR departments.’; ‘If you don’t hire me, you will end up regretting it.’ ; ‘I met a couple of other candidates in the waiting room, I can save you the interview time as I am far superior to them.’ And the best was ‘Am I in the right room?’.

ay in an day out, we [psychiatrists] see all kinds of weird cases. I has this one case where the patient thought his brain is moving all over his body. People have funny, crazy thoughts. Some feel their thoughts are being read. Some think their thoughts are being broadcast through some media or that they are being controlled by someone. One of the biggest challenges faced by psychiatrists is that patients don’t adhere to treatment. In any other medical profession, patients take medications by themselves (without being prompted every time). But here, he thinks he is alright. There is a stigma attached;

they feel like an outcast and do no disclose their condition (to family or friends). Patients don’t come out. One of my patients had bipolar mood disorder. He had manic features and hypersexuality. He would demand sexual favours from his wife in front of his children — a girl, 10 and a boy, 8. Slowly he started exhibiting himself to his neighbours too, before some elders in the colony brought him to see me. Sometimes it becomes quite challenging. Listening to emotional problems throughout the day, it becomes an emotional baggage [for us]. Psychiatrists have an insight into their problems. Most of them can manage by themselves. I go out of the city once in four months on vacation. I spend Sundays with my family and play with my children.

WASHINGTON: People who suffer from asthma are at an increased risk of developing sleep apnea, a disorder that causes breathing difficulties while sleeping, a new study has warned. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin used data from the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study, which has been following approximately 1,500 people since 1988. They found that patients who had asthma were 1.70 times more likely to develop sleep apnea after eight years. "This is the first longitudinal study to suggest a causal relationship between asthma and sleep apnea diagnosed in laboratory-based sleep studies," said Mihaela Teodorescu, assistant professor of medicine at the university.

"Cross-sectional studies have shown that OSA is more common among those with asthma, but those studies weren't designed to address the direction of the relationship," Teodorescu said. The connection between asthma and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was even stronger among participants

During the eight year follow-up period, 45 subjects developed asthma and were 48 per cent more likely to develop new-onset sleep apnea.

ASTHMA linked to increased risk of sleep apnea

who developed asthma as children. Childhood-onset asthma was associated with 2.34 times the likelihood of developing sleep apnea. The researchers also found that the duration of asthma affected the chances of developing sleep apnea. For every five-year increase in asthma duration, the chances of developing OSA after eight years increased by 10 per cent. Participants in the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort, who were all between the ages of 30 and 60 in 1988, completed inlaboratory polysomnography, clinical assessments and health history questionnaires every four years. For the asthma-OSA study, the researchers focused on 773 cohort enrollees who did not have OSA when they joined the

study and then determined whether their sleep apnea status had changed after eight years. During the eight-year follow-up period, 45 subjects developed asthma, and they were 48 per cent more likely to develop new-onset sleep apnea. However, because the sample size was small, the increase lacked statistical significance. "Forty-eight per cent represents a large difference," said Paul Peppard, an assistant professor of population health sciences at the university and a principal investigator of the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort study. Sunshine vitamin may help treat asthma

LONDON: Asthma patients should soak up some sun! n Vitamin D could act as a possible new treatment for asthma, as it has the potential to significantly reduce the symptoms of the condition, a new study has found. n Severe asthma is currently treated with steroid tablets which can have harmful side effects. Many sufferers have a steroid resistant variation of the condition making it even more difficult to treat and resulting in frequent admissions to hospital with severe, even life-threatening attacks. n Scientists at the King's College, London identified a mechanism through which Vitamin D can reduce asthma symptoms, providing a potential target for future treatments. Technology YAHOO 3.0 JOHN BIERS feedback@postnoon.om NEW YORK: Reinvigorated technology player Yahoo! Monday unveiled a dustedoff design of its Flickr photo platform only hours after the company’s dramatic acquisition of blogging site Tumblr. Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer, maintaining that her ambition was to make Flickr “awesome again,” said the new site will showcase “bigger images” and create a user experience that is “more immersive, more expressive.” Mayer’s announcement of the Flickr makeover came only hours after the company announced it was buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Referring to Tumblr, Yahoo promised “not to screw it up.” Mayer, a Google veteran who joined Yahoo as chief executive last summer, Monday referred to Flickr as a once-shining acquisition “that didn’t fare so well” and vowed that Tumblr would not follow a similar path. Mayer described Monday’s dual announcements as consistent with her ambition to make Yahoo an “Internet services company” that focuses on “improving user experience.” Some analysts have criticized the $1.1 billion Tumblr deal as overpriced given that the company has a scant $13

No longer the ugly

duckling Yahoo unveils makeover of Flickr; now offers 1 terabyte storage space for free. million in revenues and no profits. But Mayer said that Tumblr’s users of some 300 million per month complements Yahoo’s 700 million per month, making a total of some 1 billion users per month, a huge set of eyes that will appeal to advertisers. The remade Flickr aspires to transform a consumer experience that had become flat with excessive text and dull, uninspired photos. Under the new Flickr, photos upload in full resolution and adapt “wherever” users desire, such as smartphones, tablets or social networks such as Facebook and

Twitter, said Yahoo senior vice president Adam Cahan. The showcase element is a free terabyte of space to store photos; enough capacity to store up to 537,731 images, Cahan said. That is more space that any user could possibly fill in a lifetime, Yahoo officials said. “We wanted it to be unlimited,” Cahan said. The revamped website, which went live Monday evening, also has a new look, cutting out words and user messages and instead featuring larger photos without text set against a sleek black background. Mayer said Flickr’s cur-

rent subscription pool is in the “tens of millions.” She declined to release the company’s targets for growing subscriptions. Mayer said Yahoo benefits from a “really healthy” revenue stream, largely from advertising. The new Flickr will employ new advertising formats that Yahoo! is still developing. Users who want to opt out of advertising can pay $49.95 a year to access an adfree version of Flickr. Mayer said she has four more product launches scheduled for the coming weeks. She boasted that the recent stream of activity has increased the “velocity” within Yahoo, which has been viewed by some as a fallen technology star following the rise of Google and some other companies. Mayer, who was joined by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, also announced that Yahoo had settled on a New York City headquarters. It will be in the former New York Times building in Times Square. “Twenty years ago if you looked out here you’d see plenty of yahoos, but now the Yahoos will make an honest living and help us grow,” Bloomberg said in a joking reference to the area’s seedy past. Bloomberg said that the moves show the city has become “a big player” in the technology world. AFP

he audio launch of Nani's upcoming film Paisa was a glitzy affair with the entire cast and crew of the film gracing the event. Dasari Narayana Rao was the chief guest at the audio launch and several young actors including Allari Naresh, Sharwanand, Tarun, Navdeep, Sundeep Kishan, Kamal Kamaraju, Varun Sandesh and Tanish were spotted at the event. Nani, Catherine Tresa and Sidhika Sharma have played the lead roles in the film and Krishna Vamsi has directed the film.Talking about the film, Nani quipped, "I received four things from Krishna Vamsi while acting in this film.

Those are — his friendship, experience of working in a good film, a scar on my nose and a ligament tear.” On a serious note, he added, “The film is beyond the perimeter of success or failure. I'll always be proud of Paisa and it's been an honour to be a part of the film.” The main highlight of the audio launch was a heartfelt speech by Dasari Narayana Rao who praised Krishna Vamsi for making films with passion. “It has been 50 years since I came to the film industry and I have been directing film for 40 years now. All I can say is that a director is the captain of the ship and he alone is responsible for shaping careers of actors. I'm pleased to see the younger generation of actors today, but I must say that they need to do more films every year. Today, the Tamil film industry is flourishing and several small films are doing really well, along with big budget films; however, some immature writers are misguiding Telugu film industry. Films have become quite cliched these days and to change this scenario, we need more directors like Krishna Vamsi. He makes films with great passion and I am confident that Paisa will

be a milestone in both Nani and Krishna Vamsi's career.” Krishna Vamsi thanked producer Ramesh Puppala for standing by him through thick and thin. “We faced several issues while making the film, but Ramesh Puppala was always supportive. He knew that he wouldn't gain anything out of Paisa, but he still produced the film. Nani has acted in the film purely out of passion. Personally, I think I made the film with a lot of vengeance, energy and passion.” Sai Karthik has scored the music. The film will hit the screens next month.

STRAIGHT FROM CANNES

India's U

nashamedly escapist, with wafer-thin plots and cheesy dialogue, all punctuated by exuberant song and dance routines, Bollywood musicals are beloved by millions despite the critics’ reservations. But India's biggest star Amitabh Bachchan, in Cannes this week for a celebration of Indian cinema at the Riviera film fest, admitted he prefers not to use the word “Bollywood”. "I just feel that the Indian film industry has its own identity... so I’d rather call it ‘the Indian film industry’, especially now we celebrate 100 years of the Indian film industry this year,” the actor known as the Big B said in Cannes. In fact, Bachchan was articulating an increasingly common view among actors and directors — that there is a lot more to Indian film than Bollywood potboiler musicals. They argue that just as India has changed rapidly over the past 15 years, so too have the sort of films being made and the people making them. Four members of India's new generation of filmmakers on Sunday appeared on the red

carpet at Cannes for a gala screening of their film Bombay Talkies, an anthology to which each contributed one short film. "There are a lot of directors who started directing movies in the early 2000s... they kind of took mainstream Bollywood films, big sets, stars and narratives and gave them a very new

tilt which reflects the urban India of today," Dibakar Banerjee, one of the four, told AFP. His own short film tells the story of a theatre actor who has been out of work for years and suddenly lands a part. In southern states in particular there had been huge changes to the way films were made.

"In the south they have led the way in terms of how to make completely new narratives, new kinds of films and smash box office records. Bollywood has started taking narratives from them," he said. Fellow Bombay Talkies director Karan Johar's short film about a gay relationship is an example of the risks some directors are now willing to take with the subject they choose. His short film focuses not just on a gay relationship, an enormously taboo subject in India, but also on the theme of denial. Johar had broken "away from his earlier narrative and structures and subjects", Banerjee said. Karan told AFP it had been important to him to grasp the opportunity offered to explore a difficult subject. "I took it up as a challenge because I knew that if I didn't do it in a concept like this then I wouldn't be justifying my presence," he said. The director, also known as the host of a popular TV celebrity chat show, said Indian society was still "not very accepting of homosexuality" and that "levels of homophobia are quite high".

The film would probably not "start a movement" but it was "definitely a first" in terms of tackling the subject on film, he said. Kashyap's film, meanwhile, tells the story of a boy sent to Mumbai to get Bachchan to taste the pickle his father sells in his shop. The 40-year-old Gangs Of Wasseypur director's kidnap thriller Ugly, exploring the subject of child abduction, got a warm reception when it was shown at Cannes in the Directors Fortnight last week. The other Bombay Talkies film by Zoya Akhtar focuses on a young boy who dreams of becoming a dancer even though his father wants him to be a footballer. She said there would always be a place for the traditional Bollywood musical even if some features evolved. "Indians like to sing. Indians like music. It's every family on every occasion, at every picnic," she said. "It's how our folk stories were, they all had music in them... it's part of our narrative it's part of our story telling and it's not going to go," she added. AFP

BRADLEY COOPER takes cooking lessons from Ramsay

H

ollywood actor Bradley Cooper is reportedly taking cooking lessons from well-known Scottish chef Gordon Ramsay to prepare for his role in director John Wells's Chef. Cooper is playing a cook named Adam Jones, who destroys his career with drugs before getting clean and trying

to open a restaurant that can gain three Michelin stars. Ramsay, who also hosts TV cookery shows, was the first Scottish chef to get three Michelin stars for his restaurant — Gordon Ramsay in central London. "Gordon jumped at the chance to be involved in this," thesun.co.uk quoted a source as

saying. "He has a lot of showbiz pals in Los Angeles through being mates with the (David and Victoria) Beckhams. So it was only a matter of time before he got involved in the movie business out there. Gordon’s going to be giving Bradley a crash-course in cookery and teaching him some

flash tricks like knife-work so Bradley looks like an experienced chef," the source said. “He’s used to being in front of the camera, so who knows? A cameo in Chef would be the perfect start if he wanted to dip his toe into acting,” the source added. Ramsay and the actor are signed to work with the Creative Artists Agency. IANS

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

WATCHING

PICK OF THE WEEK

Touch of Sin makes waves at Cannes Jia Zhang-ke’s Touch of Sin, a scathing attack on China’s abnormal economic boom, has been one of the most talked-about films at Cannes this year. HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

J

ia Zhang-ke arrived at Cannes a few days ago for the international premiere of his latest film A Touch of Sin and by the time the screening was done, he showed the audience a world which is behind the iron curtain of economic boom and glory. The China shown in Jia Zhangke’s film is consumed by violence and cynicism. The growing gap between the rich and the poor is a major subtext in the film and the simmering anger among the working class is ubiquitous. The film narrates four stories, which are loosely connected with each other, set in different parts of China, which depict the lives of a troublemaking mine employee Dahai (Jiang Wu), a gun-toting psychopath (Wang Baoqing), a young woman (Zhao Tao) who works as a receptionist at a sauna and a young aimless man (Luo Lanshan) who picks up casual jobs to make a living. A Touch of Sin, as Jia Zhang-ke admits, is inspired from real stories, including a 2009 case where a pedicurist killed a local official after he reportedly slapped her in the face with a wad of cash when she refused to sleep with him, a notorious 2011 high-speed train accident that killed 40 people and also the suicides at Foxconn factories. In a country with stringent censorship laws, it certainly looks like he has got lucky. In the past, the Chinese government had either banned few films or barred a handful of filmmakers from making films for depicting certain touchy subjects. One of them is Lou Ye’s Summer Palace, which was banned after its screening at Cannes Film Festival in 2006 because it didn’t have the approval of the government. Ironically, despite the hard hitting themes which Jia Zhang-ke has addressed in A Touch of Sin, the film was co-produced by Jia’s Xtreme Productions and the state-run film studio Shanghai Film Group. It’s a big leap for-

ward for the filmmaker who was once considered as an ‘underground’ filmmaker since he made most of his films outside China’s state-run film bureaucracy. His first breakthrough film Platform, which released in 2000, was voted as one of the greatest films of the past decade by the Toronto International Film Festival’s Cinematheque, which comprises 60 film experts from all over the world. Jia’s next major breakthrough was a 2006 film Still Life which was set in a small town on the Yangtze River which was slowly being destroyed by the building of the Three Gorges Dam. The highly restrained drama and gorgeous cinematography, apart from addressing themes like displacement, disenfranchisement and social unease, are common to all his films, but A Touch of Sin, as top critics have pointed out, is the beginning of a new chapter in his filmography. Peter Bradshaw, who writes for The Guardian, focuses on the violence in the film and writes, “...So this brash, daring and often ultraviolent movie is atypical to say the least, avowedly inspired by the wuxia martial arts films of King Hu, but it has clear debts to Tarantino’s riffs on this same genre, and to Sergio Leone. The idea of Jia Zhang-ke making his own Pulp Fiction or A Fistful of Dollars (or rather yen) might before now have seemed fanciful. But that is what he has done — or almost.” Soon after the film’s trailer went online, the social media in China was abuzz with blogs and tweets about Jia’s audacity in addressing some of the most complex issues plaguing the society. Whether A Touch of Sin wins the coveted Palme d’Or or not, Jia has certainly made a strong statement about his country. That behind the veil of prosperity and economic boom, there lies a world filled with disenchanted citizens who are struggling to come to terms with the modernity which their nation has been aiming for. If that’s not a strong statement, then what is?

Kisaragi (2007) Directed by Yūichi Satō, Kisaragi is a Japanese film which narrates the story of five people, who are all fans of a C-list model Kisaragi Miki. A year after Kisaragi commits suicide, these five fans decide to meet and pay tribute to their favourite actress. Soon, it becomes clear that each one of them had a close connection with Kisaragi. It’s a laugh riot and the entire story is shot in a single room.

I don't think we can say what the Latin American identity is, but I think we can try to look for it, and look for the reverberations from it. Walter Salles Director

DID YOU KNOW? Werner Herzog did not storyboard a single frame of his breakthrough film Aguirre: The Wrath of God. All of it was shot and framed spontaneously and even the actors had no proper rehearsal of their scenes. Interestingly, the film, like most of his subsequent films, was shot on a 35mm camera which Herzog stole from his film school.

Timur Bekmambetov, the director of Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, was a successful film director in Russia before he moved to US. One of his films titled The Irony of Fate 2, which released in 2007, was the biggest blockbuster ever and it even surpassed the records set by many Hollywood films. It held the record till Avatar released.

NBA

James trades jibes with Pacers coach A comment by Frank Vogel stirred the emotions of James, who saw it as an insult to their champion status. MIAMI: Reigning NBA champion Miami is on the verge of a third consecutive NBA Finals berth, but the Indiana Pacers plan to spoil the repeat bid in the Eastern Conference final that starts in Miami on Wednesday. The Heat, sparked by regular season Most Valuable Player LeBron James and playmaker Dwyane Wade, have the homecourt advantage in the best-ofseven series to decide who will face Memphis or San Antonio in June’s NBA Finals. But the Pacers promise a formidable test for Miami, having beaten them in two of three regular-season meetings. Each

“We’re not just another team," James said. “He said we’re just another team in their way. We’re a great team. If we’re just another team, you really don’t prepare for just another team. You have to prepare for us. “We’re a great team. We’re very confident. We’ll be ready for them." That prompted Vogel to respond on the Pacers’ website on Monday. “Sorry sports world, the words ‘just another team’ never came out of my mouth," Vogel said. “Great respect for LBJ and the champs. Looking forward to (a) great series."

team won on its own home court, with Miami having now won six of their past seven home meetings with Indiana. The Pacers figure to be underdogs but Indiana coach Frank Vogel is focused upon his own team rather than dethroning the defending champions. “When you’re in the final four, you’re competing for a championship," Vogel said. “They are the next team in our way. That’s how we’re approaching it." That comment stirred the emotions of James, who saw it as an insult to their champion status and 66-win season.

BADMINTON

It wasn’t the first time Vogel aroused the tensions of the Heat ahead of a playoff matchup. Miami and Indiana met in the second round of last year’s playoffs and ahead of that series Vogel called the Heat the “biggest flopping team in the universe." After the Pacers seized a 2-1 lead in that series, Miami rallied to win the next three games and advance. “This is not about getting back at Miami," Vogel said. “We’re not satisfied with where we’re at. We feel like there is no ceiling on this team this year and we are looking forward to the next series." AFP

HYDERABAD: Tata Capital in association with the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) announced the launch of the ‘Tata Capital Super Shuttlers’ in Mumbai to train budding, aspiring young talented kids aged between 8-12. The ‘Tata Capital Super Shuttlers’ camps will be held between May 27th and June 7th at leading sports clubs in Mumbai. The best players from

these camps will get a chance to be a part of a tournament held on June 15th - 16th at the badminton courts of the Cricket Club of India (CCI). The winners of the tournament will have a chance to be trained by the coaches of the PPBA. Speaking at the launch of this unique initiative, Mr. Amar Sinhji, Member – Management Committee, Tata Capital

Limited, said, “We are delighted to be launching this unique initiative to encourage and develop talent in a sport like badminton amongst children. At Tata Capital we believe in ‘doing what’s right’ and Tata Capital Super Shuttlers is an initiative in this direction. We hope that young children will come forward and benefit from the badminton camps, realizing their true potential”

MILAN: Australian Cadel Evans said he has not thrown in the towel ahead of his bid to overthrow Italian race leader Vincenzo Nibali and win this year’s Giro d’Italia. Evans, the 2011 Tour de France champion, is second overall at 1min 26sec sec behind Nibali heading into the final week of the race which features key mountain stages including an uphill time trial. Given he was only slated to compete several weeks before the May 4 start in Naples, Evans has impressed during a tough first two weeks of racing, in which pre-race favourite Bradley Wiggins and defending champion Ryder Hesjedal withdrew due to illness. Although he admits Nibali’s Astana team will be hard to beat, the Australian — who has a dozen or so Grand Tour campaigns under his belt — said his victory ambitions remain intact. “To be here second overall on GC (general classification) is not

so bad," Evans said during the race’s final rest day Monday. “Me being somewhat the ambitious rider that I am, I say it’s not impossible to win. So I’ll be a bit greedy there and keep asking more of myself." After a mediocre 12th place in the stage two team time trial left Evans in 62nd overall, and in spite of losing 33secs to Nibali on Saturday, he has stayed at the front of the pack to find himself still well in contention. Zhang retains men’s crown

Defending champion Zhang Jike of China retained his men’s singles title at the World Table Tennis Championships in Paris after defeating compatriot Wang Hao 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12, 5-11, 11-7 in the final. PARIS, FRANCE: Defending champion Zhang Jike of China retained his men’s singles title at the World Table Tennis Championships in Paris on Monday after defeating compatriot Wang Hao in the final. Fourth seed Zhang prevailed 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12, 5-11, 11-7 in a rematch of last year’s Olympic final to secure a fourth major title in a row. Zhang completed a career grand slam when he pipped Wang to the Olympic crown in London last August, adding to the world title he won two years ago in Rotterdam and the 2011 World Cup, with Wang also the losing finalist on both of those occasions. Ma Long took top honours at last year’s World Cup in Liverpool, an event in which Zhang did not take part. Having raced into a two games to love lead in the French capital, Zhang was pegged back by Wang in game three and the contest appeared to be heading for two-all only for Zhang to fight off four set points in the

PGA ANCHORED PUTTING

Tiger wants issue addressed ASAP

BETHESDA: Tiger Woods wants the US PGA Tour to enact a ban on anchored putting “as soon as possible” if golf’s governing bodies impose a ban on the stroke on Tuesday. The US Golf Association and Royal and Ancient Golf Association are expected to announce on Tuesday their decision on whether or not to ban anchored putting, which has aided four of the past six major winners, starting in 2016. Woods has made no secret of his support for a ban and repeated it Monday at an appearance at Congressional Country Club, where he will defend his title next month at the $6.5 million US PGA National. “I hope they go with the ban,” Woods said of Tuesday’s decision. “Anchoring should not be a part of the game. It should be mandatory to have to swing all 14 clubs.

“And as far as the PGA Tour, I hope they do (ban) it as soon as possible to be honest with you. I’ve always said that. I’ve always felt that golf you should have to control your nerves and swing all 14 clubs, not just 13.” Woods will defend his crown June 27-30 in an event that serves as a fundraiser for his foundation. Masters champion Adam Scott of Australia, an anchored-stroke putter, is among those set to compete. Other recent major winners

using the belly putter style include reigning British Open champion Ernie Els of South Africa and Americans Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley. Woods is in talks with club officials to keep the National at Congressional, which has hosted five major championships and last year managed to complete the event despite a storm that toppled more than 40 trees Friday, knocking out power and forcing organizers to keep out spectators on Saturday. Woods said there are other options for hosting the event, mentioning Philadelphia and Baltimore as well as Washington. Next month, Woods will be in Philadelphia trying to win his first major title since the 2008 US Open and the 2013 US Open in Merion, a revamped course he has not seen since amateur days. AFP

fourth frame to re-establish a two-game advantage. Wang, the 2009 champion, then took the following game to preserve his title hopes but it proved to be merely a stay of execution as Zhang wrapped things up in game six at the first time of asking. “It was a very closely-fought match, we both played well,” Zhang said afterwards, his dominance over Wang extended with a seventh straight success over the World No.3 that improved his head-to-head record against Wang to 8-3. “For me there is no loser, the most important thing was to enjoy the match and I did that,” Zhang continued, paying tribute to his opponent. I’ve been in Paris twice (the 2011 World Cup being the other). Both times I’ve won the final so I really love it here,” added the 25-year-old, who said his next goal was to win all three major titles again. Despite coming up short against Zhang yet again, beaten finalist Wang was not too downhearted by the loss. AFP

MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

Dream run to continue

DUBLIN: Chinese schoolboy Guan Tianlang, the youngest player in Masters history, will continue his dream run in US PGA events by playing in next week’s Memorial tournament, organizers said Monday. The 14-year-old prodigy won the low amateur’s Silver Cup last month at Augusta National and shared 58th at the Masters and followed up two weeks later by making the cut at finishing 71st at a PGA event in New Orleans. Guan missed the cut at last

week’s Byron Nelson Championship but on Monday accepted a sponsor’s exemption invitation into next week’s event, which will be hosted by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus at Muirfield Village. “I have had the fortunate pleasure of spending time with Guan and his family and I have found him to be mature beyond his years and very passionate about his development in the game,” Nicklaus said. t will be a ‘Battle of Equals’ when mighty Chennai Super Kings meet the formidable Mumbai Indians in the first play-off match of the Pepsi Indian Premier League here today. On paper, there is very little to choose between the two teams, who have both won 11 out of their 16 matches and have a number of match-winners who can turn the tables on a given day. Mumbai Indians under stewardship of Rohit Sharma has been a force to reckon with having won all their eight matches at home, while CSK’s season has been a mix and match but they have successfully finished off a number of close encounters, which has been their hallmark over the years. Mumbai Indians might just have a psychological advantage having beaten the ‘Men in Yellow’ in both home and away games. However it will be an altogether different test on a ‘neutral venue’ as they will be playing at

the Feroze Shah Kotla which has been known for producing dodgy 22-yard strips over the years. With both teams relying on their batsmen to do the trick, one can brace up for ‘some battles’ within the main contest. It can be a Sachin Tendulkar versus Ravichandran Ashwin, Mahendra Singh Dhoni versus Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard against Mohit Sharma or Mike Hussey versus Pragyan Ojha affair. Tendulkar is likely to make a comeback at the top of the order and the senior batsman would certainly want to play an innings of impact. Only 287 runs from 14 matches this season at an average of shade over 22 is not something that Tendulkar will be too happy about. His form has been patchy but occasional brilliance like the one against Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai can be expected any time. With the dangerous Dwayne Smith as a partner, one can expect an explosive start from the duo. PTI

NEW DELHI: India’s Test paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and two other bowlers are to appear on Tuesday in court over allegations that they accepted tens of thousands of dollars for spotfixing, police said. Sreesanth, along with his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, was arrested last week for deliberately bowling badly in specific overs during the ongoing Indian Premier League after striking deals with bookmakers. “We will seek further custody of the players in the court as we need to interrogate them further,” a senior police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity. The officer said that 11 bookmakers who have been arrested as part of the same inquiry would also appear in the court in Saket, a suburb in southern Delhi. Sreesanth, who has played 27 Tests for India, is alleged to have been paid four million rupees (about $75,000) to give away 14 runs in an over in a match against Kings XI Punjab on May 9. Tuesday said investigators had seized two million rupees stashed in a cricket kit bag and hidden at a house belonging to a relative of Chandila in the state of Haryana. Police behind the arrests say the trio were acting under orders from international crime syndicates but were well aware of the rewards if they could manipulate events on the field throughout the cricketmad region.

The Rajasthan Royals Monday suspended the contracts of the three players and promised to cooperate fully with the authorities in their investigation. “The franchise is in daily contact with the police authorities in Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai for providing any cooperation or information that they might require,” it said in a statement. Royals terminate contracts of trio

JAIPUR: Beleaguered Rajasthan Royals today terminated the contract of the three players — including India pacer S Sreesanth — arrested on charges of spot-fixing in the ongoing IPL besides filing an FIR against the tainted trio. “Based on the information provided by the authorities, the contracts of all three players have been suspended pending enquiry,” Rajasthan Royals chairman Ranjit Barthakur said in a statement. “We have already filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against all three players earlier today [on Monday],” he added. The IPL last week found itself engulfed in a spot-fixing scandal after Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates were arrested by the police which claimed that they received upto Rs 60 lakh from bookies for bowling one manipulated over. The IPL stepped up security for the four remaining teams in the T20 league by providing them an officer each from the Anti Corruption and Security Unit. PTI

Mourinho to leave Real

Jose Mourinho will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after a turbulent three-year spell in charge of the Spanish giants, club president Florentino Perez confirmed the news. KIERAN CANNING Agence France-Presse MADRID: Jose Mourinho will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after a turbulent three-year spell in charge of the Spanish giants, club president Florentino Perez confirmed Monday. “After the conversations we have had with our coach Jose Mourinho we have arrived at an agreement to end our working relationship at the end of this season,” Perez told a press conference. “The coach and the club agreed this is the right moment. I want to thank Jose Mourinho for the work he has done in the last few years.” Mourinho, who has been strongly linked with a return to Chelsea - a team he managed between 2004 and 2007, has endured a torrid final season in charge of Los Blancos culminating in Friday’s defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey final that ensured Real end the season without a major trophy. However, Perez denied that Mourinho had been sacked by the club and said they will not have to pay the Portuguese coach compensation despite the fact his current contract runs until 2016. “No one has sacked anyone, it has been a mutual agreement,” Perez said. “It is not nice for anyone to have to leave but it is also true that after three years we both

decided it was the right moment to break this relationship.” And despite rumours linking Paris Sant-Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti with the manager’s job at the Bernabeu, Perez also claimed he has not reached an agreement with any coach to succeed Mourinho. “I want to clarify that we have not established any

agreement or pre-contract with any coach. This is a job we have ahead of us in the coming days,” he said. “I want to show my maximum respect to PSG, their president and all the clubs.” The 50-year-old Mourinho’s time in charge of the nine-time European champions has been littered with high profile bust-ups with the local media and many of his stellar squad of world class players, but Perez hailed his demanding standards throughout his time in charge. “He is a very demanding coach, with himself and with the rest and this wears you down,” he said. “The important thing is that we have recovered the level that we didn’t have before.” Mourinho’s time in charge did have its successes as he guided Real to the Spanish title last season and won the club’s first Copa del Rey for 20 years back in 2011. Los Blancos also reached three Champions League semi-finals under Mourinho, but ultimately it

was his failure to lead Real to their treasured 10th European title that will mark his legacy in the Spanish capital. The Portuguese was heavily criticised for his overly defensive approach in a number of meetings with eternal rivals Barcelona during his first year in charge as Madrid were humbled 5-0 at the hands of the Catalans and also dumped out of the Champions League by Barca in a bad tempered semi-final.

The love-hate relationship MADRID: Jose Mourinho’s three-year reign in charge of Real Madrid was finally brought to an end on Monday when it was announced that the Portuguese will leave the club at the end of the season. Just as in his spells in charge at Chelsea and Inter, Mourinho’s time at the Bernabeu has been filled with controversy, debate, scandal and no lack of success. Brought in by Florentino Perez to bring back the Champions League trophy that he had won for Inter Milan in the Santiago Bernabeu in 2010, his legacy in the Spanish capital will though be indelibly marked by his failure to deliver “La Decima”, Madrid’s 10th European title. The Portuguese’s relationship with Madrid has been a love-hate one throughout his three years in charge and the degree to which he was allowed to cross what some saw as unacceptable lines of conduct.
