DRIVING LICENCE SCAM
SIDE EFFECTS
LEARNING TO DIE
As getting a driving licence becomes as easy as buying groceries, the number of incompetent drivers on City streets increases. PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: Sneha Rao, a third-year degree student, has been taking driving classes for the past two months. Confident of her skills, she went to take the driving test. It was on the track while taking the competency test that she realised for the first time, she couldn't complete the tasks set before her. “I thought I had learned to do all these things during the classes. But when given a real car and asked to reverse and take U turns and everything, I found out I didn’t know anything. So I gave up.” Much to her surprise, however, two weeks later, she received her permanent driver's licence. By all standards, she should have failed the test. But thanks to an implicit MoU between her driv-
Heart illness, diabetes make brain sick WASHINGTON: A recent study has shown that people suffering from type 2 diabetes and heart disease are at an increased risk of dementia and cognitive diseases. Lead author Christina E Hugenschmidt, PhD, an instructor of gerontology and geriatric medicine at Wake Forest Baptist, said the results from the Diabetes Heart Study-Mind (DHS-Mind) suggest that cardiovascular disease (CVD) plays an important role in the development of cognition problems, and these may take time before becoming clinically apparent. A report of the study appeared in Science Daily. The research results, which

ing school and the RTA office, a license came as part of her “package.” In the past few years, driving schools have cropped up around every street corner, all promising 100 per cent results in the course of one month — for a price of `3000 to `5000 for the coaching, with a “guaranteed” learner's and permanent licence as a value added service for another `2000. What these schools don't seem to assure, however, at the end of the course is a customer's ability to drive. In fact, some driving schools go as far as to maintain that, like in any school, there are bound to be performers and there will be non-performers. “Given the time we had and the number of people in each batch, we used to do our best to teach everyone. But there will be some who can't perform.

Nothing we can do about that,” shrugs K Srinivasulu, a driving-school instructor turned chauffeur. The fact that these “non-performers” armed with “guaranteed” licenses might be endangering lives on the road seems to be of little interest to the schools. Likewise, the idea of offering a bribe to buy a licence does not seem like much of a bother to youngsters. Ramya Chalapathi, an IT professional who has just gotten her license, thanks to a resourceful driving-school, says she doesn't mind paying for the convenience. “If I went by myself, without
the help of any agent, I'm sure they will make me keep coming back. This way, it's all arranged, neatly paid and bought for, so I don't have to worry about anything.” Meanwhile, Hyderabad roads continue to be death traps with each trip to and from homes and offices turning into adventure sports. Add to this dangerous mix amateur and ill-trained drivers churned out by hundreds of driving schools each month, and welcome to Fast and Furious: The Hyderabad hellhole.

appeared online, will also be followed by a print version in Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications. “There has been a lot of research looking at the links between type 2 diabetes and increased risk for dementia, but this is the first study to look specifically at subclinical CVD and the role it plays,” Hugenschmidt said. “Our research shows that CVD risk caused by diabetes even before it’s at a clinically treatable level might be bad for your brain. “The results imply that additional CVD factors, especially calcified plaque and vascular status, and not diabetes status alone, are major contributors to type 2 diabetes-related cognitive decline,” Hugenschmidt said. NSA’s Bush-era phone taps continue: Report
LONDON: The US National Security Agency, during the Barack Obama administration has pursued wide-scale monitoring of the telephone records of millions of Americans, the Guardian reported online. Cellular (mobile) carrier Verizon is required to provide the NSA daily with “information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries," the paper reported. It cited a “top-secret court order issued in April” it had obtained. “The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk — regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing," the Guardian report said. Under the order, “the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique
identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls. The contents of the conversation itself are not covered," the report explained. A Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court had “granted the order to the FBI on April 25, giving the government unlimited authority to obtain the data for a specified three-month period ending on July 19," the paper reported. Under former president George W Bush, the NSA, as part of a program secretly authorized by Bush in October 2001, implemented a bulk collection of US telephone, Internet and email records.

In 2006, USA Today sent many jaws dropping when it reported that the NSA had “been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth". It had been “using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity," the paper reported. “Until now, there has been no indication that the Obama administration implemented a similar program," the report notes. PUERTO BAQUERIZO MORENO (ECUADOR): People need to talk about excessive use of antibiotics without getting emotional or mixing politics into the discussion, Ada Yonath, who won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, said. “Perhaps we committed errors in using antibiotics for treating viral diseases ... but we learned that that does not work. We learned a bunch of things ... so it is incorrect to say we are abusing antibiotics,” Yonath said. The Lokayukta should act against the education department officials for non implementation of the RTE Act and direct the authorities to cancel the admissions by schools violating RTE and make fresh admissions in a free and fair atmosphere in the presence of education department officials.” Though, according to the GO, no admission should start in private schools before April 14, many schools had gone ahead and conducted admission tests since February this year and completed admissions by April. Blaming parents for being only exam-centric, which is encouraging private schools to fleece them, education department officials say they will soon approach the Supreme Court. Also, action will be taken against the various private schools that have not been following the norms of the RTE Act.

SAVAR: A Bangladeshi seamstress trapped in the rubble for 17 days after the country’s garment factory disaster in April emerged from hospital on Thursday to tell reporters she had recovered “physically and mentally". Reshma, 18, who became a national heroine after the tragedy, which claimed more than 1,100 lives, was in good spirits and looked healthy at a ceremony at the hospital organised to mark her release. “I feel great now. I am recovered mentally and physically," she told reporters, smiling and dressed in a peacock green dress and head scarf. “I never thought that I would get my life back again when I was trapped under the rubble," she added. M a j o r - G e n e r a l Chowdhury Hasan Suhrawardy confirmed that she had been discharged from the military hospital after nearly a month of treatment following her spectacular rescue on May 10. After declaring that she would never again work in the garment industry, she is set to take up a job at a luxury hotel in the capital Dhaka. AFP

SEOUL: South Korea agreed Thursday to a surprise North Korean proposal for official talks, and said it would announce a date, venue and agenda at a later date. The South Korean government “positively views North Korea’s proposal on official talks,” the unification ministry said. “We hope that South and North Korea can build trust.”
SINGAPORE: Over 130 Singaporean bloggers blacked out their homepages Thursday to protest new licencing rules for news websites. The protest comes after surprise regulations came into force on June 1 requiring news websites, including one operated by Yahoo!, to obtain licences from the citystate’s official media regulator.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police said Thursday they had detained more than 900 Myanmar nationals in a security sweep after at least two were killed last week in clashes believed to be linked to sectarian violence back home. The two dead were likely Myanmar Buddhists killed during a spate of violent incidents in Kuala Lumpur since May 30.
TOKYO: Japanese whalers hunting the mammals in the northwestern Pacific caught a record-low 34 minke whales this Spring, the fisheries agency said Thursday, blaming bad weather. The whaling, conducted in the name of “scientific research", took place from April 18 to June 3 and netted 17 male and 17 female minke.
STOCKHOLM: Sweden’s Princess Madeleine is set to marry US-British businessman Chris O’Neill on Saturday in a ceremony likely to be more low-key than Crown Princess Victoria’s lavish wedding three years ago. The two will tie the knot in an afternoon ceremony at Stockholm’s Royal Chapel.

PATRIOTISM COMES AT A COST
FOR THIS CHINESE FARMER
It’s a Great Wall of trouble SEBASTIEN BLANC Agence France-Presse
AFP/ED JONES
JIAYUGUAN, CHINA: At the farthest end of the Great Wall, Yang Yongfu limps along the section he arduously restored, in effect “privatising” it and putting himself on a collision course with the authorities. The farmer spent five million yuan ($800,000) and years of backbreaking work renovating several hundred metres of the national symbol deep in northwestern China, turning it into a tourist site. “At the beginning people didn't understand why I took on this project,” said the 52-yearold. “They called me crazy." The Great Wall is not a single unbroken structure — nor is it visible from space — but stretches for thousands of kilometres, from Shanhaiguan on the east coast to Jiayuguan in the windswept sands on the edge of the Gobi desert. In places it is so dilapidated that estimates of its total length vary from 9,000 to 21,000 kilometres (5,600 to 13,000 miles), depending on whether missing sectors are included. First begun in the third century BC, parts were still being built in the Ming Dynasty (13681644), among them Yang's section. It was little more than a ruin when he started work in 2000, but now 790 metres of ochre wall run out from a small fort across a stony plain. Built of bricks and rendered with earth, his wall averages around 4.5 metres high and is
topped with battlements. “People were sceptical, because they thought renovating the wall was the job of the government,” said Yang. “I was surprised at the success I had. But this could also be considered an act of patriotism.” He set up an entrance area for tourists, complete with a car park and fishpond, and his wife Tao Huiping collects the 25 yuan admittance fee at the ticket booth — a table in the open air. “Today about 30 people came,” she said, holding up the ticket stubs, beaming proudly and praising her husband’s “phenomenal” work. “People

Their opportunity came about in 1999, Yang said, when local authorities called on residents to renovate the Wall themselves, and officials gave him authorisation to do so. The money came from savings and loans from relatives. In recent decades the Wall has suffered the depredations of farmers stealing its stones for building, and construction crews cutting through it with roads and railways. 1966-76 Cultural Revolution. But as China has become wealthier the government can better afford to take on the burden of restoration. At the same time the Communist Party uses nationalism to bolster its claim to a right to rule and in recent years authorities have become keener custodians of symbols of China, from historic monuments to giant pandas. A 2006 law gave the government the exclusive right to manage national relics — making Yang's project illegal. His business continues to operate but he and the local authorities have been through several rounds of negotiations over transferring the rights to the wall. They have so far failed to reach an agreement. “I never received any support from the government and they accused me of constructing a fake wall,” Yang said. “That’s what makes me angry.” One of the Wall's most popular sections, at Badaling just north of Beijing, can see thousands of Chinese tourists during public holidays. But even with 20,000 visitors a year Yang's site is a long way from being a viable business — and just across the valley an official attraction listed as a World Heritage Site offers 7.5 kilometres of wall. Yang admits still owing one million yuan. ”I have cried tears of despair,” he said, but insisted he “regretted nothing”.

WASHINGTON: Ten months after the gurdwara shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, the Federal Bureau of Investigation will begin formally tracking hate crimes against Sikhs, Hindus and Arabs. LONDON: A 6ft lizard that is believed to have roamed in South East Asia 36-40 million years ago has been named after The Doors singer Jim Morrison (in pic). The name Barbaturex morrisoni is a play on the late Morrison’s epithet “The Lizard King”, the BBC reports. The study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, says that higher temperatures at the time are thought to have helped the lizard evolve to its

unusual size. The reptile is also thought to have successfully competed for food against mammals. A team of palaeontologists which analysed fossils of the giant reptile found it is the largest plant-eating lizard yet. The giant lizard, that is thought to have lived alongside
other herbivorous and carnivorous mammals during the Eocene epoch, may have weighed about 27.2 kg , experts say. Considering the fact that most modern-day lizards, like iguanas and agamids, are smaller than other herbivores, Barbaturex morrisoni was larger than most carnivorous mammals. The study also found that competition for resources did not seem to limit its evolution into such a large lizard. AGENCIES

Oz sees surge in homelessness Australia is facing record inflows of asylum-seekers, with numbers expected to top 25,000 in the year to June 30.

SYDNEY: Homelessness in Australia has surged 17 per cent since 2006 mainly due to a spike in migrant numbers, though fewer people are sleeping rough on the streets, a report found Wednesday. The National Affordable Housing Agreement report, prepared by the government’s COAG Reform Council, found that overall housing security had declined from 2006 to 2011. While the number of “rough sleepers” — those living on the streets — had fallen six percent to 6,813, the overall amount of people considered homeless had bal-

looned 17 percent to 105,237. Council chairman John Brumby said Australia was now unlikely to meet its target of reducing homelessness by seven percent this year, blaming growing levels of crowding and temporary housing. “This report defines the many faces of homelessness," Brumby said. The rise in the homelessness figure was fuelled by severe crowding, which is defined as a
home where there are more than two people sleeping per bedroom and at least three extra bedrooms are required to reduce the burden. Two-thirds of the 41,390 people living in severely crowded homes were born overseas and likely to be recent migrants, the report found. Australia is facing record inflows of asylum-seekers arriving on people-smuggling boats from Southeast Asia, with numbers expected to top 25,000 in the year to June 30. To reduce the burden on immigration detention facilities the government has been forced to release thousands of applicants into the community on spartan welfare with a ban on working. Charity groups have been forced to meet the shortfall, providing shelter, food and medicine for refugees struggling to make ends meet. Aboriginal Australians living in crowded dwellings in the remote Northern Territory account for 11.2 per cent of the nation’s homeless. Aborigines, Australia’s most disadvantaged minority, are 14 times more likely to be homeless than their non-indigenous counterparts, according to the report. AFP
Man who gambled $1bn fails in court SYDNEY: An Australian property mogul lost his lawsuit against the nation’s largest casino after wagering more than US$1 billion there and losing over $20 million. High-roller Harry Kakavas sued Melbourne’s Crown Casino to recoup his losses, alleging it lured him with gifts and private jet flights while knowing he was a compulsive gambler who had been barred from a casino in Sydney. Kakavas wagered $1.43 billion over 16 months on baccarat at the Crown and accumulated net losses of $20.5 million. He argued that the casino ought to repay him because it had exploited his “pathological urge to gamble". But the High Court of Australia threw out his case. “The court did not accept that the appellant’s pathological interest in gambling was a special disadvantage which made him susceptible to exploitation by Crown," the
judges said. “He was able to make rational decisions in his own interests, including deciding from time to time to refrain from gambling altogether. “Crown did not knowingly victimise the appellant by allowing him to gamble at its casino." AROUND THE
WORLD
Kakavas was described by the initial judge assessing his case as “the highest of this country’s high-rollers” and a prolific gambler who had tried his luck in Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Macau and the Bahamas. He had some spectacular wins at Crown, where he was allowed to bet single hands of up to $300,000 before ultimately losing “all he won, and more", the lower court judge said. Kakavas was eventually banned from Crown after blowing more than $2 million on the card tables in just 43 minutes in August 2006. AFP
PACIFIC HORROR
Belief in witchcraft growing
SYDNEY: Belief in sorcery and witchcraft is on the rise in the Pacific, experts warned Wednesday after a young woman accused of killing a boy with black magic was burnt alive in Papua New Guinea. Lawrence Foana’ota, formerly the director of the Solomon Islands National Museum, said people were
increasingly turning to witchcraft. “The reason why it’s growing is because there is some kind of economic benefits people are receiving from these practices," said. Unless the problem was addressed quickly, especially amongst the young, “it might end up in the same situation as in Papua New Guinea where they are actually physically killing people", he said. The brutal killing in February in Papua New Guinea of a 20-year-old mother accused of witchcraft sparked international outrage. The woman was stripped, bound and burned before a crowd of onlookers including schoolchildren. In another attack in April, an elderly woman was beheaded after being accused of black magic.

The February murder helped push Papua New Guinea (PNG) to re-introduce the death penalty for violent crimes including sorcery, a move criticised by rights group Amnesty International and the United Nations. Reverend Jack Urame, from the Melanesian Institute, said Christian organisations could do more to stamp out the widespread belief in sorcery in PNG, where many people do not accept natural causes as an explanation for misfortune and death. sus has finally entered the phablet market with FonePad Note that will compete directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Note. The only phone that Asus ever sold was as part of Asus FonePad in which case the phone could be docked into a tablet. FonePad Note runs on Android Jelly Bean and is powered by Intel 1.5GHz Atom Z2560 processor. It will have 2GB RAM which will come handy as a lot of Android apps will need to be made compatible with Intel processor on the fly. It has a full HD six-inch display and an eight mega pixel camera at the back.

It can be docked on to a bigger keyboard dock if you want to use it as a laptop. It’s powered by dual-core atom processor clocked to 1.8GHz and will have 2GB RAM. There will be 32GB and 64GB models available when the device goes on retail later this month. The lower-end model will be priced at $379 and keyboard dock will cost an additional $90.

kiddie is an abbreviated version of ‘Scrip Kiddie’ and is usually assigned to a person who downloads a script to perform a hack only to gloat about his hacking capabilities later. Such people have very little knowledge of what goes on in a hack and is looked down upon by hackers. What skiddies lack in skill, they make up in intent and many people in security field find these skiddies a bigger risk, as a lot of hackers look for loopholes just for the fun of it. Skiddies on the other hand do it with malicious intent most often than not. However, it is also easier to trace a hack back to skiddies and they may not know to cover their trail.
or the past five years Intel has been placed in a tough situation, on one side the PC business, their bread and butter, has been shrinking and on the other side they haven’t been able to make a dent in the mobile business. Though these big industry changes haven’t had a big impact on their financial results, it was the kind that could have affected the stability in the coming years. This year, however, the company has fought back and shown the world why it is still one of the best chip makers in the world. Almost all the smartphones and tablets that are in the market right now run on chips based on ARM architecture. Nvidia, Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung, you name it, every major operator have teams in place working on innovative and fast chips based on the designs made by the British company. Intel have made some attempts over the past years to make their presence felt with a few Atom processors, but the market hasn’t been kind to them. The XOLO devices that have been in the market for the past two years have received only luke warm response despite being well priced and that has forced the company to put aside the race for the fastest processor and concentrate on the factor that matter the most in mobility industry — power consumption. These new chips branded Haswell sips power in comparison to its predecessor and takes up only 6 watts, that’s 50 per cent better than the chips they introduced in the market earlier. Though they will be trying to make their way into the Android market with these new chips, the biggest benefactor with this move will be Microsoft, as more companies will be able to push
out tablets running full Windows 8 operating system that have a good battery life while being able to run without a noisy fan inside. Microsoft has also been struggling in the market dominated by Android and Apple devices and their entry level tablets running on Windows 8 RT (that does not offer a desktop environment except for very limited number of apps developed by Microsoft) has been shunned by most users. These new chips, however, lets the OEMs sell smaller and cheaper devices running a full-fledged Windows 8 that will bring back the
The next generation of laptops can be detached from the keyboards and used as a tablet Win-tel alliance back to the forefront of the industry. Microsoft has been touting tablets as the next big revolution in PC since the early 90s but it wasn’t until the launch of the iPad that the industry finally started adopting the form factor. Apple currently has 40 per cent marketshare with Android based tablets gaining 56 per cent and Windows has been reduced to an also-ran. At Computex 2012 OEMs such as Asus, Acer among others showcased 10-inch devices that ran on Windows 8 RT running on ARM-based processors however this year there was not a single one on the floor. Thanks to these new chips from Intel these companies can now produce two-in-one devices that work efficiently and also do justice to both form factors. The next generation of laptops can be detached from the keyboards and used as a tablet while being able to match ARM-based
tablets on battery life. Thanks to the reduction in power consumed, these devices will not sport a fan on the edges to keep the insides cool. Back when iPhone was still a concept, Apple were in talks with Intel to find out if they could get a processor meant for a next generation smartphone. Intel had very little to offer back then and their Atom processors were made for netbooks and nothing else. Apple then decided to go ahead and make processors based on ARM’s designs. If Intel continues their march towards more efficient processors they might be able to win back a lot of hearts they lost over the past five years. The smartphone industry is still very young and such rapid innovation could unsettle ARM from the position of mobile industry kingmaker. If companies such as Apple and Samsung decides to go for Intel processors in their devices over the next couple of years, it could change the landscape forever. Intel has been trying to get OEMs to build laptops that would fit its Ultrabook criteria for the past two years and that concept is slowly picking up interest among the masses. Now there is one player that has been Intel’s rival for the past decade, AMD, that is still waiting on the sidelines. While they have a strong chip in the form of an APU it has done nothing in the mobility industry. It has however cornered the next generation console market as both Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One will be running on chips designed by it. Will the intense competition get AMD to also join the rat race? We don’t know, but one thing we can be certain off is that our smartphones, tablets and laptops will look and function very differently in the next two years.

What is NPS
One of the most attractive features of the NPS is the flexibility it offers. NUPUR PAVAN BANG and ANUJ HETAMSARIA HYDERABAD: The New Pension Scheme is a scheme launched by the Government of India in 2009, to enable all citizens of India between the age of 18 to 55 to save for their retirement. The minimum amount to be invested is `500 per month, while there is no upper limit for the maximum amount that can be invested. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, demand draft or electronic clearing system. A Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) is issued to the subscribers. The
PRAN card looks like the Permanent Account Number (PAN) card as the issuer of both is National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). The PRAN is a 12 digit unique number and it is useful to track the status of the NPS account such as balance, NAV units, and transfer of funds online. One of the most attractive features of the NPS is the flexibility that it offers. It can be operated from anywhere in the country, irrespective of employment and geography. The safety of funds, returns and tax benefits are of course the primary benefits. It currently has ETT exempt status, that is it will be
exempt from taxation at the investment and accumulation or earning stage, but will be taxed at the withdrawal stage. However, in the proposed Direct Tax Code it will have EEE status, which means that there will be no taxation at the time of withdrawal as well. NPS also has the flexibility to choose the risk level that the investor wants to take. The investor can invest in one of the three schemes available as per the risk appetite. Asset class E scheme invests in Equities, Asset class C scheme in Fixed Income and Asset class G in government securities. There are two types of
accounts, Tier I and Tier 2. Tier 1 is for retirement and non-withdrawal account where as Tier 2 can be withdrawn as per the wishes of the investor. There are different schemes for withdrawal. One is premature withdrawal in which 20 per cent will be given as lump sum and remaining 80 per cent as annuity. In case of retirement withdrawal, 60 per cent will be given as lump sum and 40 per cent as annuity. The point to be noted is the strictness in the premature withdrawal of only 20 per cent. So a huge amount is blocked for a long period of time ensuring financial freedom at the time of retirement.

Lachlan Murdoch abruptly resigned from the company in 2005 after clashing with executives, though he has remained on the board. He had long been regarded as heir-apparent to the Murdoch empire, and his father’s decision not to head the newly spun-off print division of News Corp triggered talk it could be a re-entry opportunity for his son. But Lachlan Murdoch doused the speculation, denying he had any plans to rejoin
the corporation’s executive ranks. “No, no. I’ve moved on from that," he told the Australian Financial Review Thursday. He was upbeat on the News demerger, scheduled for June 28, saying it was “reflecting well for shareholders and the stock price has, I think, reflected that". WASHINGTON: The International Monetary Fund on Wednesday admitted to significant failures in the first Greek rescue that forced a second, larger bailout and left the country in a deep recession. However, the global lender placed much of the blame on its Greek and European partners, saying they were unprepared for the crisis and the harsh choices — including a deep debt restructuring — that may have made the first bailout work better. The IMF said in a review of the 2010 rescue that it overestimated both Greece’s debt sustainability and Athens’s ability to implement structural reforms. It said there were some problems coordinating with the European Commission and the European Central Bank, its troika partners in the 110 billion euro ($144 billion) program, and that they lacked expertise and harmonized goals.
EU SEEKS LIBOR CONTROL LONDON: European Commission officials have drafted plans to take the scandal-hit key interest rate Libor from its current London base, the Financial Times reported on Thursday. Under proposals seen by the FT, the rate would be supervised in Paris by the European Securities and Markets Authority in a move likely to anger the British government. British regulators last month laid out plans for a new dual-track system combining survey-based rates and objective data to replace the current system. Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland and UBS have paid over $2 billion to settle allegations they manipulated Libor to their advantage or hide their financial strains during the 2008 credit crunch. Libor, or London Interbank Offered Rate, is a flagship instrument used all over the world, affecting what banks, businesses and individuals pay to borrow money. It is calculated daily, using estimates from banks of their own interbank rates, and affects the pricing of more than $300-trillion of contracts across the world, according to regulators.

special delivery of peanut butter, pyjamas and parmesan cheese was blasted into the cosmos on Wednesday to bring some Earthly indulgences to the astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS). The items were in a cargo capsule launched on the European Space Agency's Ariane 5 rocket to bring creature comforts like family photos and sweet treats to the six-person crew, but also bare essentials like oxygen, food and drinking water. Perhaps the most anticipated among the record 1,400 items launched on the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) are the care packages put together for each of the astronauts with favourites they had requested and little surprises from home. "It's quite small, but you can actually fit quite a lot in there," ATV cargo engineer Kerstin MacDonnell of the agency's ESTEC research centre spoke of the bread bin-sized container each crew member would receive. "Some birthday cards or drawings from their children, or if one of them has a craving for chewing gum or beef jerky or whatever kind of thing they like," she said. "For the most part it's just comfort things that would help the morale — personal items and mementos from the family." MacDonnell oversaw the loading of the ATV Albert Einstein, ESA's fourth and penultimate cargo freighter to the ISS, launched from Kourou in French Guiana.

razil's capital is well known for the modern architecture of its designer, the late Oscar Niemeyer. But mystic types come for a different kind of thrill, like communicating with the spirits. The greater Brasilia area has around nearly 1,000 worship sites for every possible faith in the country with, at least nominally, the world's largest Catholic population — and esoteric rites and mediums are part of the mix. In Vale do Amanhecer (Valley of Dawn), a town 40 kilometres outside Brasilia, people dress up in the garb of civilisations past, like the Maya, or as wizards and nymphs as they trudge through the streets in rapturous contact with the spirits. Tourists positively lap it up. What on earth is going on? Actually, it is going on underground. Mystics say Brasilia, inaugurated in 1960, was built atop an area with great cosmic energy — a plateau 1,100 meters above sea level, resting on a subsoil of crystals. Koraly Aredes, an 86-yearold former Catholic missionary who spent more than half her
life in Africa, says she found her faith here. The cult surrounding the mystic buzz in Vale do Amanhecer is said to have 100,000 mediums. It was founded in the 1960s by a clairvoyant widow named Neiva Chaves Zelaya, who died in 1985 and is known as Tia (Aunt) Neiva. The main mystical site looks like a space ship, and inside it bright colours and mirrors divide up spaces dedicated to things or people like the moon, the sun, Jesus Christ and the Queen of Sheba — all part of Tia Neiva's vision. Long lines form as people wait for spiritual cures for what ails them, a cleansing of their souls or hook-ups with somebody out there in the great beyond. As chants hum, incense fills the air. Paulo Roberto, a 50-year-old medium — and lawyer — wears brown and black garb that looks like it comes right out of a space-based sci-fi flick. The hottest draw, at 100,000 visits a month, is Brasilia's Temple of Good Will, a pyramid that is open 24 hours a day and belongs to no particular religion, where people walk through a spiral-like space to recharge and tidy up their energies. The mystic and religious experiences on offer are so popular that the local government is working with UNESCO to fashion a full-blown religious tour
out of it, said Meire France, a tourism official. A bit further from the capital is the town of Abadiania, where thousands of people from around the world arrive every week to be treated by Brazil's most famous medium, a man named Joao de Deus, and undergo what he calls 'spiritual surgery" — complete with scalpel, needles, no anaesthesia and no pain. And in the town of Gama, an illiterate medium named Valentim Ribeiro Souza has been treating patients for the past 55 years, three times a week. His faithful are people suffering from cancer or who have not found answers in traditional medicine. Valentim, 73, works a pair of
small scissors adroitly, tapping people on the head with them or snapping them open and shut as if he actually were cutting open skin, and wriggling with a spasm or abruptly screaming. "Today, I am completely cured," says a happy Leonice Silva Rocha, 70, who says the doctor cured her only remaining kidney of cancer. Ribeiro Souza churns out health at a furious pace: in four hours, he has treated 900 sick people. Helping him, he says, are 60 spirits. He says he himself spent 14 years in a wheelchair until a spontaneous cure turned him into a spiritual doctor. "We see everything there is inside people," Ribeiro Souza said, referring to himself and the spirits.

little compromise goes a long way in achieving a major goal. Myopic vision only blurs vision. Density of population in big cities is an unavoidable happening and the way out of this is to accept realities of heavy influx and to take the most appropriate corrective measure. But we must plan it in a way that we leave enough lung space for the City and not turn it into a concrete jungle. Chew on this: every commuter who chooses the Metro over a car or even a bus (hitherto promoted good public mode of transport) contributes in reduction in emission of about 100mg of carbon dioxide for every trip of 10 kilometres. Now that is a big contribution indeed, considering that the Hyderabad Metro when fully functional is expected to by carrying lakhs of commuters on a daily basis. To facilitate Metro travel on World Environment Day and contribute towards saving the environment should be the objective of all since it helps remove lakhs of vehicles from city roads and cuts fossil fuel consumption.

t’s an American take on a British miniseries of the same name. The plot seems familiar — a pair of Detroit detectives kill a fellow cop and try to cover up their deed. Created by Chris Mundy of Criminal Minds fame, the show seems promising for its strong cast (Mark Strong and Lennie James as the killer cops). Moral dilemmas, corrupt cops, politics and a murder mystery — what more could you want?

Under the Dome
A
n American sci-fi/horror series directed by Brian K Vaughn (writer for Lost), Under the Dome tells the story of a small American town which suddenly finds itself cut off from the rest of the world by an invisible barrier. Yes, we know that sounds like the plot of The Simpsons Movie, but the series is based on the eponymous novel written by Stephen King in 2009. While most of the town people panic and turn on each other, a small band gets together to find out the reason for the dome and how to escape. Starring Mike Vogel and Rachel Lefevre.
ased on a Danish/Swedish cop drama, The Bridge now comes to life along the US Mexico border with Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid’s adaptation. When a body is found on a bridge connecting Mexico and the US, two cops — one American (Diane Kruger) and a Mexican (Demián Bichir) start working together to stop a serial killer who works on both sides of the border. The original was quite gripping; it remains to be seen how the US version will match up.

UNDERSTANDING THE BRAIN: PART IV
19
Overloading our brains Dr Sudhir Kumar, senior consultant neurologist at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, talks to Postnoon about increasing memory loss in youngsters, impact of lifestyle trends on brain health and ways to keep your brain active. DEEPASHRI VARADHARAJAN
deepashri.v@postnoon.com
How do lifestyle trends affect brain health? The main thing I find is lack of sleep. For good health, you need good sleep of seven to eight hours. Modern life is such there are many distraction — TV, internet, Facebook; many people work in shifts also, and sleep is disturbed. When you sleep less, it not only affects your memory, it results in impaired concentration. There is a higher tendency to get migraine, and you tend to get more irritated and angry. Second is lack of physical activities like walking or outdoor games. Even when people want to relax, they chat, watch movies or play video games. It (physical inactivity) is a risk factor for brain stroke. Third is high BP and cholesterol. Youngsters are getting increasingly forgetful. What are the reasons for this loss of memory retention? There are two things. First is that the amount of
things one can remember is limited, like in a hard disk or pen drive (similar with your brain). Today, there is information overload. Earlier, if a person wants to do some research, he will go to the library and read 10-15 books on it. Today, if I tell a patient he has migraine, he will go back and Google it and find 10,000 articles on it. The brain cannot remember everything. Secondly, people do more things in a shorter span of time. Earlier, (most) people had one job. Today people do two or more jobs. Any job requires effort. This puts more strain on the person. Stress and strain are factors that affect memory, coupled with lack of sleep and physical exercise. There is also lack of concentration (among youngsters). If someone is talking to me, he is easily distracted if he gets a call or message on his mobile phone. There are multiple stimuli (to the brain) at the same time.
What have been the latest trends in vaccinations/ medications for the brain? There are no new vaccines for the brain; nothing specific. There are memory boosting pills, but these are unproven and unscientific and we don’t recommend them. If someone has a deficiency of vitamin, then we give supplements. What brain diseases are on the
DR SUDHIR KUMAR,
rise these days? First is brain stroke; it is one of the four most common causes of disability and death — the other three are cancer, heart attack and accidents. The second is Alzheimer’s/dementia. There are two reasons for this. First is that it is more common among elderly people. People are living longer — life expectancy is higher. Second is that people are more aware —
Senior consultant neurologist at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills
they come to the doctor. Brain stroke among youngsters and dementia among older people are on the rise. What are some simple ways to keep the brain active? Anything that is good for the body is good for the brain. General exercises like swimming, jogging, cycling or walking, for five days in a week, at least for 20 minutes is good for the brain. Recent research suggests one must exercise daily, but at least five days is compulsory. Like the muscles of our legs and hands become stronger with (physical) exercise, brain becomes more active with cross words, Sudoku or when you write some poem. This is what I tell elderly people and those who have retired. If someone just sits and watches TV the brain becomes passive. Talking to people is also a good exercise because you have to listen, assimilate information, think about it and answer.

1993 saw the launch of NCSA Mosaic 1.0, which became the first web browser to achieve widespread popularity. Prior to Mosaic, the web was almost entirely text — if you wanted to view an image, you had to click on a link and the image would open in a new window. Mosaic allowed you to view text and images on the same page, thus making the web a much more user-friendly place.

The original 'wed browser' was created by Tim Berners-lee in 1990, using a next computer. The choice of browsers wasn't quite as good as it is now-it was the only way to view the infant web! The name of the browser was eventually changed from world wide web to nexus to avoid confusion.
In 1995 Microsoft released Internet Explorer 1.0 as part of its Windows 95 Plus! pack, with Mosaic once again involved in the creative process. Just three months after the first iteration, Internet Explorer 2.0 was released as a free option. The browser then went on to overtake Netscape to become the most popular web browser.
Safari was primarily made by Apple for computers than ran its own operating system. The early Apple Macintosh computers used other browsers such as Netscape, but in 2003 Apple chief Steve Jobs announced that Apple was releasing its own browser. Google released its own browser in 2008 on top. Since its release Chrome's popularity soared and it is currently the most secure browser.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

t seems that Punjabi tadka will rule the box office this weekend with heavy duty entertainment Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 hitting the screens Friday. The comedy drama, a sequel to 2011 movie Yamla Pagla Deewana, has taken the story to Britain this time and, unlike the previous film, only Sunny Deol will be seen in the turban-wearing avatar. Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, the movie is already making a buzz because of its interesting trailers. A home production of the Deols, the film, made under Vijayta Films, also stars
Dharmendra, Bobby Deol and Neha Sharma. In the film, Dharmendra’s character launches Yamla Pagla Deewana club and the trio cook up loads of fun to entertain the audience. Even though Sunny feels that lavish promotions are waste of time and money, he and his family have been promoting the film in the best possible manner. “It has become more stressful of late. It’s a waste of money, waste of time, waste of everything! You
can use that much of money making another film, how much you spend on public relations these days,” Sunny said. The movie also introduces Australian model-actress Kristina Akheeva, who plays a British girl, but does not want to get typecast as foreign girl in the film industry. “I hope I don’t get typecast as half foreign, half Indian. I want to play traditional type of roles and get myself into a character where I can practice
my Indian mannerisms and think like an Indian girl from some village,” she said. Two more Deols are involved with the project — while Sunny’s wife Lynda came out with the story idea, his son worked as an assistant director on the film. Watching three Deols work together in the same film is not new — they starred together in the 2007 hit movie Apne. The music of the movie is composed by Sharib and Toshi and is a hit among lovers of fast-beat Punjabi numbers. IANS

Mercedes in a big fix The Mercedes team has been ordered to face an investigation by the FIA, into allegations that they conducted illegal in-season testing with Pirelli tyres. MONTREAL: The Mercedes team has been ordered to face an investigation by the International Tribunal of motor racing’s ruling body, the International Motoring Federation (FIA), into allegations that they conducted illegal in-season testing with Pirelli tyres. The tribunal has wide-ranging powers if it finds Mercedes broke the FIA rules and can impose penalties ranging from fines to exclusion from the world championship. The announcement that the German team will face further investigations, following a report by the stewards at the Monaco Grand Prix, came late on Wednesday evening. Mercedes had been investigated by the stewards following protests lodged by Ferrari and Red Bull, both teams claiming that Mercedes took part in testing with Pirelli following the Spanish Grand Prix last month. In a statement, the FIA said: “In the light of all the replies received and in view of the information gathered during this inquiry, the president of the FIA, acting as the FIA prosecuting body, has decided: “To close the case as regard to Scuderia Ferrari Team considering that its participation in a tyre test organised by Pirelli in Barcelona on 23-24 April 2013 using for this purpose a

breach of the applicable FIA rules. “The FIA International Tribunal is called upon to make a decision in compliance with the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules.” The sport’s governing body explained that it requested information from those involved and rival teams before coming to its conclusion.
It was ironic that Ferrari’s own test with Pirelli, conducted at Barcelona in April with a 2011 car, was deemed not to breach the rules as they were one of the two teams leading the protests against Mercedes. The announcement is not expected to have any effect on the team’s preparations for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. AFP
Oslo moves step closer towards bid OSLO: Oslo inhabitants are to vote on whether they wish to bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics after the city council on Wednesday voted in favour of bidding. The referendum will be held on September 9 at the same time as the Norwegian parliamentary elections with a yes vote the favoured outcome. Oslo has already hosted the Winter Games, in 1952, while Norway also played host to the quadrennial event in Lillehammer in 1994. Should Oslo go forward as a candidate it is likely to have Scandinavian rivals in Swedish capital Stockholm. Their National Olympic Committee president Stefan Lindeberg told Swedish national press agency TT the city had the required popular support to warrant a bid. However, the Swedish government has openly queried whether a bid would have any chance of winning, but Lindeberg is adamant there was a case for trying. “Perhaps this is a unique chance that we have. That alone makes it worth trying,” he said. The withdrawal of Swiss resort St Moritz has left it a wide open race. The vote by the IOC members as to hosts the Games will be in August 2015. AFP

ST JUDE CLASSIC
US OPEN
Phil tunes up for Merion
Phil Mickelson will warm up for yet another shot at the US Open title when he plays at the US PGA St Jude Classic this week. MEMPHIS: Phil Mickelson will warm up for yet another shot at the US Open title he covets at the $5.7 million US PGA St. Jude Classic this week. Many of golf’s big names, including world number one Tiger Woods and number two Rory McIlroy, will work on their games this week away from the spotlight of competition prior to the year’s second major at Merion. But Mickelson said playing the week before the US Open will give him the focus he needs. “I know that for me to be sharp mentally, especially in a tournament where the penalty for missing is so great, like the US Open, it’s important that I’m sharp and I’m ready to play,” he said Wednesday. Mickelson will be making his third appearance at the event and his first since 2009. Four years ago in Memphis,
Mickelson finished 55th, firing 75 in the final round. A week later at Bethpage Black, Mickelson finished sec-
ond in the US Open -- one of five runner-up finishes in the championship that he has often said is the major he’d most like
Chapman withdraws from Open
to win. Mickelson finished 54th at this year’s Masters -- when he took off the week before the tournament. He also missed the cut in his most recent start, at the Players Championship won by Woods. So the four-time major champion is hoping the trip to TPC Southwind will help him turn things around. He believes the 7,244-yard, par-70 course has enough similarities to Merion to provide a good preUS Open test. “The greens are small, they’re difficult to get the ball stopped on, and there are a lot of cool little shots around the greens,” Mickelson said. “The precision of the iron shot into the green as well as the importance of hitting fairways here is a similar style of golf that will happen at Merion next week.” AFP
ARDMORE: Britain’s Roger Chapman, the reigning US Senior Open champion, has withdrawn from the US Open because of a shoulder injury, organisers announced on Wednesday. The Englishman, who was born in Kenya, also won last year’s Senior PGA Championship, which was his first major crown in the 50and-over events. Chapman’s withdrawal from a fully exempt spot opened the door for Scott Stallings, a 28-year-old American, to play in his first US Open after being the first alternate from the 36-hole Memphis sectional qualifying event on Monday. Stallings has won two US PGA Tour titles, the first at the 2011 Greenbrier Classic with a birdie on the first playoff hole and the second last year at the True South Classic. AFP
FIXING SAGA
No sufficient evidence Spot-fixing probe report given to BCCI against Vindoo, Guru MUMBAI: While granting bail to actor Vindoo Dara Singh, Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan, and six others in the IPL betting case, a local court here tore apart the Mumbai crime branch case, saying police have no evidence of forgery and cheating. Among the charges invoked by the police in the case, only forgery and cheating are non-bailable. “The prosecution has availed of ample opportunities to interrogate and collect the material but it is not in position to point out who was cheated by virtue of
forged documents... The grounds are not sufficient to believe the forgery in the sense of making of false documents or entries in any official register or official documents to commit a fraud,” Additional Magistrate M N
Saleem said the 11-page bail order, passed yesterday. In Meiyappan’s case, the court observed that prosecution had accepted that he was not involved in match-fixing or spot- fixing. “He knew no one other than Vindoo through whom he allegedly placed bets. The prosecution has nowhere claimed that he has any connection with any cricketer or any player.” On the alleged links of bookies with Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf, the court said they had sent gifts to the umpire such as T-shirts and shoes, and not anything valuable. NEW DELHI: A former police officer appointed to probe IPL spot-fixing Wednesday submitted his report to BCCI without getting any access to S Sreesanth and two other players of Rajasthan Royals arrested by Delhi Police a fortnight ago. The BCCI had appointed R N Sawani, a former IPS officer who probed the 2000 match-fixing case, to go into the spot-fixing issue and submit his report to the Cricket Board. Sawani was entrusted with the task of examining in detail charges levelled by Delhi Police against the three players as also scrutinising the three IPL matches listed by it, official sources said. However, the BCCI-appoint-
ed one-man probe team could not question the three players -Sreesanth and Ajay Chandalia as they were in judicial custody whereas Ankeet Chavan was out on bail for his marriage. BCCI had got in touch with the Delhi Police requesting them to allow examination of the players and sharing of the evidence against them. All the three players have been suspended pending an enquiry. BCCI had given 15-day timeline to Sawani to complete his probe. According to sources, Delhi Police shared some basic details about the case which included how they stumbled on spot-fixing and alleged involvement of the players and their subsequent negotiations. CHAMPIONS TROPHY
Teams will change approach Indian captain MS Dhoni reckons that the newly introduced ODI rules will bring about a “change in the approach” among most of the teams. CARDIFF: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (right) reckons that the newly introduced ODI rules will bring about a “change in the approach” among most of the teams as batsmen may not go after the bowling in the initial overs. “Most of the teams, I think, they’ll have a bit of change in their approach. They’ll try to keep their wickets intact in the first 10 (overs) as the new ball might do a bit,” Dhoni told reporters on the eve of India’s openiung group league game of the Champions Trophy against South Africa. “With the introduction of the new laws, the two new balls and also the fact that you have the one less fielder inside the oval, which means even if you
have a wicket in hand, you can really exploit the conditions and get a lot of runs.” Having bundled out the Aussies for a paltry 65 in the warm-up game, Dhoni was all praise for his bowlers. “I think the new ball performance in the last game (vs Australia) was really good. There was not much swing for them, but there was really a good pace and it was important that the ball was really close to the off-stump mark. I think all in all they did that. If you see the complete picture, I think it was a good performance.” Before leaving India, Dhoni had stressed the need for playing with five specialist bowlers and reiterated it once again. “With the new rules, the five fielders outside, I think it will be
ASHES
Ahmed gets Australia call SYDNEY: Former Pakistani asylumseeker Fawad Ahmed moved a step closer to playing in next month’s Ashes series against England after being rushed into the Australia A squad for their tour of Britain Thursday. The prospects of Ahmed, 31, playing for his adopted country improved dramatically when a bill to amend the Citizenship Act, which will help fast-track his application, passed through Australia’s lower house of parliament Wednesday. “Fawad is a spin bowler of interest and we look forward to seeing how he performs for Australia A,” chief selector John Inverarity said, expressing confidence his citizenship would soon be awarded. While the legislation still needs to go through the upper house, Cricket Australia said it appeared there was enough support for it to become law.
very difficult to play with four bowlers and rely on the parttimers.” Dhoni showered accolades on Dinesh Karthik, who has
scored back-to-back centuries in the two warm-up games. “I always believe he’s (DK) someone who can bat really, really well in the middle of the order. The reason being he’s a good runner.” “He reads the situation pretty well, and he’s someone who can look to go on and play big innings, and that is what is really important in the middleorder,” he added. You have to get off to a good start. So I personally feel he’s someone who is really good to have in the side. “He’s someone that should bat at No 3, 4 or 5 but not at No 6 or 7. So I think we’ll try to give people their respective position, but we have to see according to what the need is really for the team.” PTI
‘Karthik should play against SA’ NEW DELHI: Sunil Gavaskar today said that wicketkeeperbatsman Dinesh Karthik has “done enough” in the two practice matches to earn his place in the playing XI against South Africa in the Champions Trophy in Cardiff today. “He (Dinesh Karthik) has to play tomorrow. He has rescued India twice in the practice matches. He has been in good form and has done enough to make his place in the side,” Gavaskar said. Despite Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay failing to impress in the games against Sri Lanka and Australia, Gavaskar felt India should still go with regular openers against a strong South African bowling line-up. “I don’t think India would want to unsettle their opening pair. They might have struggled in the practice matches but still they would require regular openers in seaming English conditions,” he said.
PAKISTAN VS WEST INDIES PREVIEW
WI seek fresh Oval glory LONDON: West Indies will return to the scene of their Champions Trophy final win over England nine years ago when they face Pakistan (right) in their 2013 tournament opener at The Oval on Friday. Both sides boast an array of talented, if not always consistent, match-winners with West Indies fielding hard-hitting batsmen such as Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles, while Pakistan’s attack features star off-spinner Saeed Ajmal. “We can still take a lot from it (winning the 2004 Champions Trophy), regardless of the fact that nine years is a long time ago,” said Gayle, who last year helped
the West Indies claim the World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka. Left-handed opener Gayle, 33, played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the latest Indian Premier League and caused world-
wide headlines with the fastest-ever Twenty20 century, taking just 30 balls to reach three figures against Pune Warriors. Gayle struck an astonishing 17 sixes and 13 fours on his way to an unbeaten 175 from 66 balls.
But it was Dwayne Bravo (71), Johnson Charles (58) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (55) provided the bulk of the West Indies’ runs in their recent warm-up win over Sri Lanka that followed defeat in a practice match against Champions Trophy holders Australia. “This format is more challenging, obviously, with the longer play,” said West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo. “It’s a longer form than T20, but like I said, we have players such as Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard; Ramneresh Sarwan is back also Marlon Samuels is back, so you can’t forget those players.” For Pakistan, Friday’s fixture will be their first competitive match in England since
NEW ZEALAND IN ENGLAND
Buttler service delights Cook
NOTTINGHAM: Alastair Cook forecast Jos Buttler’s decisive innings against New Zealand at Trent Bridge would be the first of many occasions the talented shotmaker swung a match England’s way. The 22-year-old Somerset wicket-keeper/batsman was outscored by England teammates Ian Bell (82) and Eoin Morgan (49) in Wednesday’s day/night clash. But it was Buttler’s 47 not out off just 16 balls that was pivotal
in setting up a 34-run win in the third one-day international, albeit New Zealand took the series 2-1. What stood out, apart from Buttler’s sheer speed of scoring, was the improvised scoop and reverse scoop shots that testified to a fantastic eye and a healthy disregard for the coaching manual. Thanks to Buttler, England were able to post a competitive 287 for six before bowling out New Zealand for 253. “It’s not going to happen
every single time, we know that, but it’s great to have that talent, the potential and the firepower to do that,” said England captain Cook, out for nought on Wednesday, of Buttler’s innings. “We’ve seen him do it a number of times for Somerset and we’re going to see him do it a lot more for England. “It’s a special talent and a talent he’s worked very hard on. It’s great credit to him because it’s a skill that needs to be practised,” the left-handed opener

SHARAPOVA, AZARENKA brace for ‘intense’ battle
DAVE JAMES Agence France-Presse
PARIS: Victoria Azarenka expects another “intense” battle against Maria Sharapova Thursday when the pair open a new chapter in their uneasy relationship with a place in the French Open final at stake. World number three Azarenka takes on defending champion Sharapova, the second seed, in their first meeting on clay since their infamous shoulder charging in Stuttgart last year. Sharapova won that clash but the final was overshadowed when the two statuesque blondes bumped into each other at the changeover, refusing, metaphorically and literally, to give ground. “Maybe even more intense,” was how Azarenka, the Australian Open champion and
playing in her first French Open semi-final, described the potential atmosphere of the semi-final. “I don’t look at her if she’s more intense than me or not. But she’s definitely an incredible
fighter, and she always fights for every ball no matter what the score is. “That’s something the top players are so good at, and that’s what makes it difficult to play
against them.” Azarenka takes a 7-5 career lead over the Russian into the match, but she has lost both their meetings on clay — the infamous Stuttgart final from last year and in Rome in 2011 when she pulled up injured. Sharapova, who suffered only a fourth 0-6 set wipeout in her Grand Slam career in her three-set win over Jelena Jankovic in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, said there would be few surprises in what’s expected to be a bruising contest. “It’s always a tough match. We have played each other so many times there are really no secrets between each other in terms of our game styles and what we do well and not. It’s a semi-final and I’m looking forward to it.” World number one Serena Williams takes a 5-0 career lead over Sara Errani, the fifth seed
Djoker, Rafa in epic duel PARIS: Novak Djokovic (in pic) and Rafael Nadal meet for the 35th time on Friday with a French Open final place at stake as well as their reputations as the two heavyweights of the sport. World number one Djokovic needs a Roland Garros title to become just the eighth man to capture a career Grand Slam. Nadal, meanwhile, is just two matches away from becoming the first man in history to win the same major on eight occasions. It’s the match-up that most neutrals would have hoped to have graced Sunday’s final, but Nadal’s seven-month absence from the sport contributed to his number three seeding in Paris and hence a blockbuster semi-final collision beckons. The 27-year-old
Spaniard enjoys a 19-15 winning record over his Serb rival and, possibly crucially, a 12-3 edge on clay. Furthermore, seventime champion Nadal, who beat Djokovic in the final last year, defends a staggering record in Paris of 57 wins in 58 matches. But Nadal is keen to play down the hype despite having arrived at the French Open with six titles from eight finals contested since his return to the tour in February. He is also keenly aware that Djokovic, just one year his junior, relieved him of his Monte Carlo Masters title in April, a claycourt crown he had proudly worn for eight
years. “I didn’t have ambition to win Roland Garros; I didn’t have ambition to win Monte Carlo; I didn’t have ambition to win Indian Wells,” said Nadal. “My only ambition is feel myself competitive another time, feel m y s e l f
happy to play tennis another time, and try to play with no limitations. So that was my only ambition four months ago, three months ago. “I am able to play with less pressure than before because I know I came from a very low situation, very low moments, so everything is positive for me.” Nadal has faced Djokovic more times than he has faced Roger Federer, whose disappointing quarter-final exit to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga only to served to fuel the speculation that the great Swiss is past his best. But Nadal hinted that despite having faced Djokovic in five Grand Slam finals in under three years, his longer rivalry with Federer may have more prestige. AFP
and last year’s runner-up, into their semi-final. The top seed is on a careerbest 29-match winning streak and if, as expected, she makes it 6-0, she will be favourite for her second title in Paris, 11 years after her first. Williams is 13-2 head-to-head against Sharapova and against Azarenka she is 12-2. She has never lost to either on clay. At just 1.64m, Errani is in the land of the giants — Williams is 1.75m, Azarenka stands at 1.83m while Sharapova, at 1.88m, towers above them all. But Errani, who lost 7-5, 6-2 to Williams on clay in the Madrid semi-finals last month, will rely on court craft and angles rather than raw power to drive her game. “Physically she’s an incredible athlete, so is not easy to play against her because she has a lot of power,” said the Italian.
Noah believes in Tsonga dream PARIS: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s march through the French Open card has convinced Yannick Noah that he can become the first Frenchman to win at Roland Garros since he himself did so 30 years ago. Noah, whose straight sets win over Mats Wilander in the 1983 final remains an iconic moment in the modern history of French sports, had been dismissive of home hopes ahead of this year’s tournament saying that the current generation were not up to it. But Tsonga’s superb form, which has seen him reach the last four without losing a set, including a straight sets demolition of Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, has led to a rethink. “What I have seen so far is that he has had a great tournament, very solid, very applied,” the tennis player turned pop star said. “Very impressive and what strikes me especially is the attitude he has. You can see that he is determined to go all the way. “He deserved his win over Federer. He was simply the better player on the day and it’s true we are starting to dream that he can go all the way.” Tsonga, the fifth seed, stormed past a befuddled Federer 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to prove that his aggressive, physical game can work just as well on clay as on grass and hardcourts where his best wins have been so far. Next up in Friday’s semi-finals is an out-an-out claycourt expert in the form of Spanish “bulldozer” David Ferrer, but Noah believes that his fellow Frenchman has the game to dominate that clash. AFP
