Cops wake up a bit too late
Investigation by the State police has reached fever pitch with police fanning out to various places searching for clues. Though NIA is entrusted with the blast probe, State police have a high stake in the matter. N SHIVA KUMAR

W
aking up after the disastrous blasts last month, the State police have begun an all-out war on terror, covering all possible corners to get a sure lead. Consequently, the police have formed 10 teams exclusively for sifting substance from trivia. These teams have begun examining all recharge centres for mobiles, call history from towers around Dilsukhnagar, STD and ISD calls and tenants who have checked in or vacated soon after the blasts. It is believed that SIM cards of some
other state had been used by terror modules for communication. That the attack was well planned and the terrorists had taken all precautions are clear because there are no telltale signs of a trail that could lead to the perpetrators, except the admission of two imprisoned IM men, who said they had conducted recce of Hyderabad with local help, say senior officers incharge of the investigation into the background. The blasts probe has been handed over to the NIA but the State police are making their own studies to prevent recurrence. Officers admit unless the local help are traced, it would be difficult for them to crack the
case. Special teams are scouring lodges, hotels and guest houses, trying to find out if there have been occupants who abruptly vacated the rooms. Lodges and hotels are now being asked to verify their guests’ phone numbers to check if they are genuine or fake. Photo identity is now essential for booking rooms. Police have visited accommodation providers in Malakpet, Asmangarh, Moosarambagh, Ameen Colony, Saidabad Gulshan colony, Hafiz Baba Nagar, Shamshabad, Toli Chowki, and Adeed Colony. An offshoot has been the inconvenience caused to current guests, who are being asked all sorts of questions and are feeling harassed.

L
ast year we had reported how the flyover near Hitec City railway station had been under construction for years. Construction was taken up by the HMDA at a cost of `24.38 crore, however it soon went up to `45 crore. In 2012, the cost shot up to `52 crore. And as of March 2013, the flyover still remains under construction, proving some things never change.

Mayor Mohd Majid Hussain said the focus is on peripheral areas, which fall under the GHMC and are not accessed by the HMWS&SB. “The forecasts show a worse scenario this year as compared to previous years,” he told Postnoon. But the proposed meeting planned with Manohar Babu, director, operations, HMWS&SB, for the core areas, is yet to take place. n order to curb crime against women, the Cyberabad police have started the process of setting up exclusive women help desks across all its police stations. The existing reception centres in 40-odd police stations under Cyberabad police commissionerate will also act as ‘exclusive women help desks’, Cyberabad police commissioner
Dwarka Tirumala Rao told PTI. “The reception centres are being strengthened and in addition to the reception work, they will function as women help desks with the posting of a woman constable,” the Cyberabad police chief said, adding that as of now, one exclusive women help desk is functioning from the police control room.
These help desks will look into the issues relating to women and crime against them by not only taking complaints of women in distress, but also guiding them and offering counselling, Rao explained. The help desks will be headed by women officials who will be in constant touch with the victims to ensure their safety. “The intention of setting up these help
desks is to guide women properly besides following up the matter through regular communication with them once a complaint is lodged,” he added. “Sensitive cases, in which women are victims, will be handled by women inspectors under the supervision of additional DCP (crime), also a woman officer,” the commissioner said. tate’s seminal examination, intermediate, began today to a troubled start with several centres reporting power outage forcing students to write examinations in semi-darkness. Nearly 20 lakh students appear for these exams across the State. While the government had declared there would be no power cuts till the exams end, many centres plunged into darkness. Ironically, the daughter of the APCPDCL’s top boss, CMD, C Anil Kumar too is said to have been a victim of truant power. “My daughter too is writing exam in the dark,” he said. Kumar told Postnoon today that the problem was technical. Examination centres are everywhere. hat the MLAs and MLCs have interest in anything except their mandated task is clear from the skeletal presence of the leaders at the orientation programme organised for them by the Speaker. A sizeable number of MLAs and MLCs skipped the programme, which was designed to acquaint them with the newly-formed standing committees. Interestingly, majority of these leaders found time to attend various engagements they had and also canvas their interests at the Congress Legislature Party Office (CLP) on Tuesday. In fact, the absentees comprise of more senior leaders including, Gade Venkat Reddy and former VC of Council Mohammad Jani. The orientation programme was to make the people’s representatives play a more constructive role in budgetary allocations. As many of these financial matters are Greek to the MLAs and MLCs, Speaker N Manohar thought it fit to
organise a three-day orientation programme drawing financial experts and officials. Cornered by Postnoon, Venkat Reddy ducked the question as to why senior leaders like him were absent at the orientation programme. He gave answers to anything but to the question, hailing the Speaker! Reddy however said there was no substance in the Opposition
stance that standing committees are formed to reduce the working days of Assembly. Even Opposition party members were absent. Some of them who came on phone said similar exercise conducted by some neighbouring states were found to be failures. “If we look at states like Kerala and Karnataka both the states introduced the concept of Standing
Committees with the objective of providing access to all public representatives in administration of the state. But it turned out to be a failure there. The same thing is likely to repeat in AP too,” CPI floor leader Gunda Mallesh said on Tuesday while speaking to Postnoon. Most of the rival party MLAs also expressed similar views.

Meanwhile, Chanchalguda corporator, Amjed Ulla Khan, reported power cuts in many centres and he said he was planning to stage a dharna before the APCPDCL. “It is atrocious,” he said, “the government knew the examinations were starting, what were they doing all this while?” he asked. “They could have changed the schedule of power cuts during the exam season,” remarked Masher Zaheer, on a social media site. He said corruption, indifference and governmental ineptitude lead to this situation. (With inputs from Inkeshaf Ahmed and Mohd Subhan)

rotesting against the management’s failure to act on time and suspend the EFLU proctor Harish Vijra, agitating students say he abetted the suicide of 30-year-old Mudassir on Saturday. According to students, there were many complaints made against the proctor, but the management failed to address their problems. “The proctor Harish Vijra used to harass students for no rhyme or reason. He used to send show-cause notices to students for petty issues and rusticate them,” said D Koteshwar, PhD scholar and student leader. Stating that the proctor did not go by the protocol when Wasim, roommate of Mudassir first approached him, the students said, “When Wasim had approached the proctor about the fight he had with Mudassir,
the proctor should have taken the matter to the grievance cell instead of taking it to the police station. He did not give Mudassir a chance to explain himself and dragged him to the police station stating that he was mentally ill and required counselling by the police,” they said. Meanwhile, defending the proctor the vice chancellor Sunaina Singh said, “I have not received any complaints about the proctor prior to this incident. The allegations made by the students seem to be baseless. I was out of town on March 1 when the students along with the proctor and other management had gone to the police station. However, I was told that after the fight between Mudassir and Wasim that night, the duo had approached the proctor. It was when Mudassir got into a tiff with the proctor and started abusing him that the proctor said Mudassir would be taken to the police station,” she said.

yderabad might still enjoy the distinction of being laidback and relaxed, but its motorists certainly don’t! In fact, if anything, Hyderabadis are known for their lack of traffic sense and for speeding even on stretches that have several pedestrian crossings. Zebra crossings are virtually nonexistent for motorists and pedestrians have no option but to rely on pure luck when they attempt to cross roads in the City.
In this picture, it can be seen that a family tries to cross the road at Tank Bund, but with speeding vehicles from both directions, it proved to be a Herculean task. Incidentally, the traffic police had imposed a speed limit of 40 kmph on this stretch some time ago. However, nobody really cares about it, nor do cops apprehend those speeding on the stretch. ondemning the police clarification that the deceased Mudassir used to harass Wasim, the students who decided to intensify the protest said that the police were linking the harassment to sexuality when there was no need of it. “Mudassir did not strangle Wasim. The duo had picked up a quarrel and in the heat of the moment assaulted each other. Mudassir and Wasim were friends for more than four years. For reasons unknown they got into a fight. The night after we had come back from the police station with Wasim and Mudasir, Wasim had also told us that he had nothing against Mudasir and loved him more than a brother,” they said.

A poor man’s sport

efore working as a senior security assistant at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Sheikh Shah Nawaz was one of the best hockey players in the City. “I started playing when I was 10 years old. When my school did not give me a chance, I played on behalf of another school and I got noticed by the local coaches.” Things went great after that when Nawaz (pictured extreme right) went on to play and win the senior nationals tournament. He holds the distinction of representing Osmania University five times in a row. “I also played for the Indian Airlines team and the Central team. All of this was between 2005-08,” he says. But now, he confesses, being married and having two children has slowed his pace a little. “This is what has happened to the young lads in our slum; most of them were weaned away from the sport looking out for jobs and a future. We were not given any encouragement by our local leaders either,” he says. Nawaz still manages to pack in four days of practice every week. The many awards and medals he has earned adorn the broom spaces of his living room now. His father Sheikh Mehboob is also a hockey player and enthusiast. Nawaz’s dream of repre-
senting the country was cut short due to the immense politics in the national hockey scene. “The saving grace was that I landed a job through the sports quota in Air India. This is how hockey has saved me,” he says. Nawaz is just one example of how great talent is left to rot in the poorest slums of the City. In Tadbund’s two acre slum area, there are hundreds of youngsters
TADBUND UNVEILED with immense potential in sports. The entrance to the slum is an open field where youngsters play volleyball regularly, and are quite good at it. Mohammad Alim, 20, loves his sport and hopes to play in a tournament some day. “I have been playing this since child-
hood in this slum and despite all their promises, our leaders have never so much as spared a glance towards us. Our request for a simple net to practice cricket has gone unheard for the past five years.” Shravan, 16, another sports enthusiast, says, “I have been playing for four months and wish I was given a chance to play in a tournament. Despite our
daily practice, we are constantly discouraged to give up this sport by our families, who want us to go work and earn a living.” The evils of poverty are quick to creep into the lives of these youngsters. Children as young as 13 can be seen smoking or chewing gutka. Those above 22 have already graduated into the daily habit of drinking every day. “This has always been a problem here. Around 10 years ago, Tadbund-11 was a hockey team that people used to die to play for. Today, nothing remains of this legend. Children have developed habits and lifestyles of 40-year-olds and there is a severe degradation of moral values here. Add to this the poverty and rigours of living in a slum and what you have here is a continuous drain of talent with every generation,” Nawaz says.

The duo recreated the magic in the 40kms event with another silver and bronze finish. “I had tears in my eyes. I didn’t even think I could get back on the cycle in the evening. But somehow I did. I definitely didn’t expect a medal in the 2nd race." If not for the injury, does he think he would have bagged the gold? “I can’t say really. I don’t know what they eat, but the Koreans are very fast," he jokes. A PAGE DEDICATED TO THE TRIUMPHS AND TRIBULATIONS OF GEN Z
THERE’S ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE Gen Z wants more than just professional success. They take an all-round approach to life. And they manage to find the time for it. RANJANI RAJENDRA ranjani.r@postnoon.com

ou know how most of us go to work and come back too exhausted to do much? Sure there is an occasional movie or dinner and drinks with friends, but not much more in terms of extracurricular activities in our lives. But not so for Gen Z. For them, life has a lot more to offer and it’s not just enough to sit back and gloat about professional or academic success. A well rounded approach to life is what they want and most of them ensure that happens. So even a dream job or a course they love is not the end of the road for them. There’s always room, not to mention time, to explore hobbies and passions. Take for instance 21-yearold Aniketh Yadav, who started working with an MNC a few months ago. His regular day job might be satisfying, but it is just not enough, which is why the rock band that he is a part of is his passion. “My job with the MNC is so I can earn money, but my being in the rock band is to feed my passion for music. For me music is a portal to express my aggression in the most productive and artistic way possible. I expose that side of me through my music. I love music because it lets me be me and for its influence on me,” he says. Little wonder then that when Aniketh and his band mates perform at gigs they only charge a nominal amount to cover their basic expenditure. “We don’t play to make money. It is purely a passion.” For others, their hobbies are also a way for them to make a quick buck on the side, apart
from the fact that they love what they do. At least that is what Nikitha Hinduja, a student, does. She started her chocolate making business along with her friend. But even after her friend exited the partnership, Nikitha continued to run the business because she enjoyed it. She is also pursuing a full time degree course. Lack of time and being tired are excuses they refuse to make. “There is always time if you want to make some. Most people complain that they don’t have time after a long day at work, but I just don’t see how. If you learn to manage time, you can always fit in a lot more in your schedule,” says Harsha G, a regular on the marathon scene, who also works with an MNC. This 22-year-old’s day begins with a jog, followed by his day job. “In the evenings, I go to the gym to train for an hour and then spend the rest of the evening with either friends or family. My friends and I love to participate in marathons and we ensure we train regularly for it. It’s really not so hard to juggle between sports and my job, if I really put my mind to it,” he says. However, I can’t do just that. So I help my mother in her boutique in my spare time. I accompany her for client visits and even assist her during trials. It gives me great insight into the business. I’ve designed a couple of outfits for my sister and friends and they love it. My mom’s boutique focuses on Indian clothes, while I want to launch my own label of Western wear. Facebook users began sharing more private data after the social network giant revamped its policies and interface, according to a study released Tuesday. The seven-year study by Carnegie Mellon University researchers said users had been moving toward greater privacy settings from 2005 to 2009, but that the trend reversed with the Facebook changes in 2009 and 2010. The researchers said modifications to the Facebook interface and default settings led to a significant increase in the public disclosure of personal information. As a result, users ended up increasing their personal disclosures on the network, sometimes unknowingly, including to Facebook itself, third-party apps and advertisers.

ow often do we think of purity of the air that we breathe? Often. Air is a less spoken of term in maintaining the health. We normally eat thrice, drink water about 15 to 20 times, breath nearly 20,000 times a day. Air is the most important substance going into our body from outside and is often ignored by most of us. The homes that we build now are mostly sealed and allow very little cross ventilation with less or no sunlight in the rooms. Paint fumes, furniture, carpets that emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). furnishings, mattresses and carpets are becoming a breeding ground for dust mite, pollen and other harmful gases. The need for fresh air indoors is pushing the people to look at air purifiers seriously. Global and Indian brands such as Sharp, Daikin, Panasonic, Sanyo, Kent, Eureka Forbes are trying to get foothold in the market. Sharp went a step ahead and introduced Plasmacluster Ion technology in their purifiers. Talking about this technology, Shuvendu Mazumdar, product head (plasmacluster business), said, ‘ ‘We look at some suspended particles in the air and assume that it is polluted. However, the truth is that by simply looking at the air we cannot determine whether it is clean, fresh or polluted. “For instance, when we spend a holiday in forest, hills or resorts it makes us feel fresh and rejuvenated. This is because of the high concentration of positive and negative charged ions (typically about 4,000 ions per cm3) in such natural environ-

There are several reports suggesting a heavy growth of air purification market in China which can be attributed to the industrial pollution. Chronicles of a ‘revolutionary’
Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías is born to impoverished teacher parents near Sabaneta.
1971 At the age of 16, Chávez wins a place at Venezuela’s military academy. He graduates five years later with a reputation as an unruly student.
1976 Chávez joins the Venezuelan army, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
1992 Chávez and other disillusioned officers begin to plot against the government. The authorities are alerted and the renegades are either killed or jailed.
1998 Despite the failed coup, ordinary Venezuelans admire the pluck of Chávez. Released from jail, he casts himself as a leftist firebrand, founding the Movement of the Fifth Republic. Chávez wins 56% of the vote in the election and becomes president.
1999 With approval ratings touching 80%, “El Comandante”, as he has come to be known, sets about implementing his social revolution by redistributing the country’s wealth.
2000 A presidential election is held under the new constitution, which gives Chávez a six-year term.
2002 Opposition grows over his radical programme, leading a million people to take to the streets. After a two-day coup, Chávez is back in the presidential palace.
2004 Chávez lavishes funds on social programmes. The measures are welcomed by supporters and help him survive a national referendum.
2006 Chávez triumphs in the polls again.
2009 Chávez is able to stand for president indefinitely, instead of being limited to two terms.
2011 Chávez reveals he is being treated for cancer and later undergoes an operation in Cuba, which aides say went well.
MARCH 5, 2013 Nicolás Maduro announced that Chávez had died.
The self-styled revolutionary
ANNA PELEGRI Agence France-Presse
CARACAS: Former paratrooper Hugo Chavez led a selfstyled revolution that redistributed Venezuela’s oil wealth, earning the devotion of the long-neglected poor while provoking foes at home and abroad. He won power through the ballot box in 1998 and hung on to it, most recently winning a new six-year term in October. It was cancer that finally defeated the leftist president on Tuesday at the age of 58. His end came after a threemonth period in which the symbolic head of the Latin American left had been neither seen nor heard by his public, fueling rumors and leaving the oil-rich nation and wider region in a state of suspense. While he was revered among the poor, Chavez left behind a deeply divided nation. Opponents accused him of being a power-hungry despot who failed to curb runaway crime and diversify an economy overly dependent on oil exports. Chavez was omnipresent in Venezuelan life, hosting his own weekend television show — Alo presidente — while his image was splashed across slums, buildings and even the capital’s international airport. Critics accused him of leading a personality cult. Inspired by Cuba’s Fidel Castro, Chavez adopted the
mantle of a socialist firebrand, railing against the “imperialist” United States while befriending controversial leaders in Iran and Syria. Cancer slowed him down, however, while chemotherapy left him bald for a while. The government had provided few details about the nature, location or severity of the cancer, saying only that it was in his pelvic region. His faith in God grew during his health troubles, causing him to break into prayer publicly, pleading during Easter Week in 2012: “Don’t take me yet.” He waited until the final week of the October election to intensify his campaign, showing signs of his old self as he danced in front of hundreds of thousands in Caracas. Vowing to make his socialist agenda “irreversible,” Chavez won the election with 55 percent of the vote, which would have kept him in office until 2019. On the world stage, Chavez embraced many US enemies over the years, including Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and Syrian President Bashar alAssad. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in 2006, he said the podium still “smelled of sulphur” after George W Bush had used it, calling the then US president the “devil”. At first he warmed towards President Barack Obama, but Chavez soon returned to type, portraying the United States as an evil colonial power while exporting one million of barrels of oil per day to the “empire.” He promoted a leftist alternative to the US-led Free Trade Area of the Americas, and was a driving force behind the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Born in 1954, Chavez was the son of school teachers from the southwestern state of Barinas. He was raised by his paternal grandmother and later studied at the Military Academy of Venezuela in Caracas. Though a devout Catholic, Chavez divorced twice. He is survived by four children and three grandchildren.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez lost his battle with cancer Tuesday, silencing the leading voice of the Latin American left and plunging his divided oil-rich nation into an uncertain future. LAURENT THOMET Agence France-Presse CARACAS: Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez lost his battle with cancer Tuesday, his death silencing the leading voice of the Latin American left and putting the oil-rich nation on a path to early elections. Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who struggled to sti-
fle tears as he announced Chavez’s passing, said the government had deployed the armed forces and police “to accompany and protect our people and guarantee the peace.” Venezuela, still divided after an acrimonious election in October last year, declared a week of national mourning, and a senior minister said a new poll would be called with-
OIL PRICES CLIMB IN ASIAN TRADING SINGAPORE: Oil prices climbed in Asian trade Wednesday on uncertainty following the death of Hugo Chavez, the president of major Latin American crude producer Venezuela, analysts said. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in April, added 26 cents to $91.08 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for April delivery rose 43 cents to $112.04 in mid-morning trade in Asia. “The impact of the news seems to be minimal at this point in time, but some speculation and risk has been priced
into oil futures,” Ker Chung Yang, senior investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore, told AFP. “Chavez has been in this position for so long, so there is a risk embedded in the political transition that could result in a disruption of oil supply.” Jason Hughes, head of premium client management at IG Markets Singapore, said the full impact of the left-wing leader’s death has yet to be felt. Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, according to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

CARACAS: Hundreds of grieving Venezuelans gathered in front of the hospital where their leader Hugo Chavez died on Tuesday, weeping and chanting “We are all Chavez!” after he lost his battle to cancer. Some waved Venezuelan flags while others held signs reading “People, Chavez and revolution, the battle continues,” and chanted “Chavez lives!” as soldiers guarded the building where the socialist leader died at the age of 58. “We feel that the father of our fatherland and many nations has just physically left us,” said Francis Izquierdo, a 40-
year-old municipal worker. “He was a man who taught us to love our fatherland. The comandante is physically gone but he remains in our hearts and we must continue building the fatherland,” he said with tears in his eyes. As the country began seven days of national mourning, Ariani Rodriguez — a teacher

in what are sure to be 30 tense days. Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said 58-year-old Chavez’s hand-picked successor Maduro would take over as interim leader pending the next election, declaring: “It is the mandate that comandante President Hugo Chavez gave us.” Hundreds of Chavez supporters crowded in front of the
military hospital where he died, weeping and chanting “We are all Chavez!” and “Chavez lives!” as soldiers guarded the gate. “He was a man who taught us to love our fatherland,” said 40-year-old municipal worker Francis Izquierdo. “The comandante is physically gone but he remains in our hearts and we must continue building the fatherland.”
US SAYS THAW NOT LIKELY WASHINGTON: The US has long hoped that a post-Chavez era could herald a new era in ties with Venezuela, but allegations of a US plot to kill the leftist leader show any rapprochement is still far off. After a long battle with cancer, President Hugo Chavez died on Tuesday, aged 58, throwing his country’s immediate political future into doubt and leaving Washington wondering what lies ahead for the Latin American nation. “I think the hardest days for our relationship with Venezuela are not behind us, they are ahead of us,” warned
Carl Meacham, director of the Americas program with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “The willingness is there” from America, he told AFP, “I just don’t think it’s in the Chavista group’s interests to make nice with the United States.” Caracas and Washington have been operating embassies in each country without an ambassador since a diplomatic spat in 2010. And analysts said it would be business as usual, particularly after Vice President Nicolas Maduro blamed Washington of a conspiracy.
LAURENT THOMET CARACAS: Nicolas Maduro, the hand-picked successor to Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, will now have to fill the void left by the larger-than-life leftist firebrand he loyally served for more than a decade. Maduro began adopting the role even before Chavez’s death, calling an opposition leader the “prince of the parasitic bourgeoisie,” and giving rambling speeches on state-run television capped with “Viva la revolucion!” Before announcing the “his-
toric tragedy” of Chavez’s death at the age of 58 on Tuesday, Maduro expelled two US military attaches, accused “historical enemies” of infection Chavez with cancer and lashed out at the opposition. Maduro has frequently appeared on the VTV public channel, handing keys to subsidized homes to families, showing off a refurbished hospital or driving a bus being donated to university students. Within the president’s ideological fold, National Assembly speaker Diosdado Cabello, is seen as Maduro’s main rival.
ELECTIONS IN 30 DAYS CARACAS: Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro will take over as interim president and an election will be called within 30 days, the country’s foreign minister said Tuesday, after Hugo Chavez’s death. “It is the mandate that comandante President Hugo Chavez gave us,” Foreign Minister Elias Jaua told state news channel Telesur, explaining that there was an “absolute absence” over the constitutional procedure to replace Chavez. Jaua did not specify if the election would be held within 30 days or if the date would be chosen during that period. The
constitution says an election must be held “within the next 30 consecutive days.” The government and the opposition have sparred in recent months over how the constitution should be interpreted in the event of Chavez’s death. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who lost the October election to Chavez, called on the government to “act strictly within its constitutional duty.” The opposition has said that the constitution calls for the National Assembly president, Diosdado Cabello, to take the helm if the president died.
holding a sign reading “I am Chavez” — said: “My heart is broken as if a father or son had died.” “The comandante is gone physically, but his thoughts and his leadership remain with us,” she said, among a crowd wearing the late leader’s trademark red color and hats issued by his socialist PSUV party. People assembled in public squares in the capital and other states, singing the national anthem, wiping away tears and holding pictures of the leader who forged a near-mystical bond with the country’s poor. “He shouldn’t have died. He was the best president Venezuela ever had,” said Frank Aponte, 45, a bricklayer.

Sources familiar with the plans have told iMore that the iPhone 5S does indeed have the same basic design as the iPhone 5, with a more advanced processor and an improved camera. With the iPhone 5, Apple made the casing thinner but managed to keep essentially the same, if not slightly better, overall quality. n 1970, on his album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, the poet Gill Scott-Heron wrote: You will not be able to stay home, brother/ You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out/ You will not be able to lose yourself on skag and skip/ Skip out for beer during commercials/ Because the revolution will not be televised. But in Venezuela under Hugo Chavez, the revolution was more than just televised; it was beamed across the globe. Like Fidel Castro before him, Chavez, who died this morning, considered himself a revolutionary. But where Castro’s legacy has been cemented by longevity and Che Guevara, Chavez’s is now at a cusp. Chavez promised social upheaval the likes of which have not been seen on the South American continent, and his Caribbean inspiration led him to believe that it was inevitable. Venezuela’s massive oil wealth made it seem all the more possible. Chavez loved baiting the American ‘Imperialist’ bear. His rhetoric was tinged with words that come from the mouths of those who consider themselves ordained to rule. That was his critical mistake. Chavez wanted the right things, the alleviation of poverty, social equality et al. But the trappings of power have felled greater men, and Chavez succumbed. Whether the world now remembers him as an anachronistic visionary, or a deluded megalomaniac remains to be seen. The world has lost a character, but Venezuela has lost its bellwether, and on the horizon dark clouds gather.

Sharmila’s chains shackle our conscience FUSILLADE
Hugo Chavez Venezuelan president
The last revolutionary?
HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS There may be many things being said about Hugo Chavez who passed away: that he was a dictator and he did more bad than good to his nation and his people though they don’t know it yet. But there is one thing: his compassion for the people. That’s why Venezuelans say we are Chavez.

W
hat happens when the State, that is dutybound to provide justice to its people, turns oppressor? None would know better than Manipur’s Irom Chanu Sharmila who has been on a fast for the last 12 years demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that provides unfettered power for the military in “disturbed areas”. Irom Sharmila is not the first person in the country to go on an indefinite fast for a cause. While the country was outraged by a two-week fast by Anna Hazare, the silent battle of this lionheart has barely found any comparable reactions. In addition to the virtual house arrest, crippling restrictions, intrusive monitoring and forced nasal feeding, Sharmila is forced to go through the charade of “annual booking” under IPC Section 309 — for attempting to commit suicide. While appearing before a Delhi Court, where charges under this section have been framed against her, Sharmila said, “I do not want to commit suicide. Mine is only a non-vio-
lent protest. It is my demand to live as a human being.” Now, is that too much for an Indian citizen to ask for? In 2004, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the Centre would “sympathetically consider” arguments against AFSPA and appointed a committee headed by Justice Jeevan Reddy to submit a report on feasibility of replacing it by a “more humane Act.” The panel submitted its report in mid-2005 — one guesses that even after eight years the proposals are being ‘sympathetically considered’. The military is vociferous in its defence of AFSPA, saying that lack of immunity from prosecution will blunt its operational edge in battling militancy. According to provisions of
AFSPA, military personnel cannot be prosecuted for their actions in a disturbed area that requires implementation of AFSPA. The Central government, which takes a call on declaring an area requiring operation of AFSPA, cannot be challenged on its judgement in a court of law. However, it is opposed by civil society organisations and human rights groups as it is allegedly abused for torture, ‘disappearances’ and fake ‘encounter’ killings. Literally every international organisation that is working in the area of human rights, including the United Nations, have criticised the AFSPA and has called for its removal. In March 2012, UN Special
Rapporteur Cristof Heyns, after a 12-day fact-finding mission in the disturbed areas, concluded that ASPA is a symbol of excessive state power and “has no role to play in a democracy”. Here, it would be noteworthy to mention that India has NOT ratified the UN Convention Against Torture and the International Convention for the Protection of All persons from Enforced Disappearance. There is no doubting that military needs special legal provisions/concessions to act effectively against militancy/terrorism, but these should come along with safeguards that provide credible accountability. Numerous examples in history illustrate clearly that alienation of local population never helped any military campaign. The security forces should be trained not only in tactics but also in sensitivity. Those who abuse their immunity should be severely punished via internal disciplinary procedures. Unless faith of people is restored through effective and meaningful measures, AFSPA will continue to be a fountainhead for militancy and a blot on our commitment to enforcement of universal human rights. Irom Sharmila can be shackled, but her ideas can’t be. Let not shrill calls of jingoism drown out the screams of our own.

Let’s put Rahul Gandhi in the second category. There is hardly any doubt that he is the one who will be assigned to take forward the Gandhi family legacy. His being made the vice-president of the Congress party recently where he told stories about how playing badminton imbued in him stability, balance and other qualities needed to be a leader and how his mother told him teary-eyed how power is poison and what-not is only one among the many clues to the great riddle of the Gandhi family: who’s going to be the next PM? He has threatened to never respond to the magazine’s reporters and has said with spite that the list has jeopardised US-Saudi relations. Ken ye more a proud and vain prince?

WEIGHT LOSS FOR CARREY
Jim Carrey went on a strict diet for his new film, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone but didn’t quite like the experience. The 51-year-old feels getting in shape was difficult, reports contactmusic.com. “It was tough to get in shape to play street magician Steve Gray, but now that we are done with shooting, I can regain the weight I lost," said Carrey.
WOMEN WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE
SCREEN POOPERS
Fire (1996) /Water (2005)
ARTH (1982)
D
irected by Deepa Mehta, both Fire and Water — part of a trilogy that also includes Earth — depict the trials and tribulations that women face in a patriarchal society. While Fire charts the stories of two women in love with each other (Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das) and deals with the issue of homosexuality in a typical Indian society, Water ‘dares to’ showcase how widows (Lisa Ray, Sima Biswas) are forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. Two of the most controversial movies Mehta ever made, Fire and Water are among the few movies that brilliantly deal with issues related to women.
D
irected by Mahesh Bhatt, Arth is the perfect answer to what a strong, women-centric movie should comprise. Almost like a slice of real life — an ambitious man (Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Inder), his overtly dependent wife (Shabana Azmi as Pooja) and a steamy extra marital affair with Kavita (played brilliantly by Smita Patil) — Arth is among the few movies that depict a woman’s journey with unflinching skill. A refreshing change from the usual ‘men will be men’ crap, Arth shows how a broken Pooja puts her life together after Inder leaves her for Kavita.
Chandini Bar (2001)
Though the heroine in Bollywood is slowly turning into an item girl, the industry still boasts of an exception like The Dirty Picture. With Women’s Day coming up Postnoon reminisces the glory heroines enjoyed in the past. Here’s a must-watch list. COMPILED BY NIDHI BHUSHAN
O
ne of Madhur Bhandarkar’s better movies, Chandni Bar traces the life of bar dancer Mumtaz (played by a very talented Tabu). Forced by her uncle to earn a living this way, a shy Mumtaz catches the eye of gangster Potiya Sawant (Atul Kulkarni), who eventually falls in love with her and marries her. Determined to make the best of things, Mumtaz pledges to do everything she can to make her son and daughter respectable in society. However, fate has something else in store. Chandni Bar is a sad reminder of how pathetic life can be some times.
Mirch Masala (1987)
D
irected by Ketan Mehta, Mirch Masala is set in colonial India where subedars (tax collectors) went from village to village with soldiers, often demanding more than taxes. The movie shows how Sonbai (Smita Patil), with the support of others, stands up against a powerful and lecherous subedar (Naseeruddin Shah). When the subedar asks a married Sonbai to sleep with him, Sonbai slaps him, runs away and hides in a spice factory. The movie shows how Sonbai stands strong against the subedar’s evil intentions and the village-approved rape. The ending scene is worth it all.
OF GUTS AND GLORY
Bandit Queen (1994)
D
irected by Shekhar Kapur, Bandit Queen traces the life of Phoolan Devi who was sent to prison in 1983 and was freed in 1994. Even though the movie, which starred Seema Biswas as Phoolan, was directed and
scripted brilliantly, it faced a few censorship troubles. Set in Bhind, 1968, Bandit Queen shows a 20-year-old Phoolan Devi getting married to one Puttilal (played by Aditya Srivastava). Physically and sexually abused by her husband,
upper-caste villagers and dacoits, Phoolan Devi takes it upon herself to avenge her honour. The movie shows how a real-life Phoolan Devi is nothing less than an example for women who have undergone or undergo similar horrors.
Prachi Desai Yes, she might be a sweet reminder of the girl next door. But, please, Bollywood doesn’t need more damsels like Prachi Desai right now. Desai, who was first seen in Rock On, got away with bad acting thanks to the screen space allotted to her. And, then she continued to show no signs of acting in Once Upon A Time in Mumbai. And, with I, Me Aur Main, she disappoints again. No, Prachi, this is not a good ‘turn point in your career’.
Wake up! We’re not even going to expect you to learn from directors like Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow who’ve brought real-life incidents to celluloid and done so with finesse. But, Mr Ram Gopal Varma can’t you at least be on par with Indian directors like Anurag Kashyap and Mani Ratnam who managed to successfully use reallife incidents in Black Friday and Bombay respectively? Watching Attacks of 26/11, one could only think – what a waste of an opportunity!

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME
Happy feet?
Not really. For people with restless leg syndrome, keeping still becomes a huge challenge. A constant urge to move their feet to do away with unpleasant sensations can definitely not be happy. RANJANI RAJENDRA

ow often have you sat through a long lecture with constantly shaking your leg, only to be rudely nudged by your friend to stop? Or maybe sat through an office meeting tapping your legs so much that you’re the receiving end of several dirty glances? Now stop and think about why exactly were you shaking that leg continuously. Was it mere boredom and restlessness or was it an unpleasant sensation that you were trying to get rid of? For several people out there, restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a reality that constantly interferes with their day-to-day lives. “Restless leg syndrome is the urge to constantly move around or shake one’s hands and legs. Typically, an individual will do this to get rid of pain, cramps or an uncomfortable crawling sensation. This usually occurs when people are awake, but it can also happen when the person is asleep. In fact, it has been seen that the occurrence is more when the person is at rest or not doing any activity,” says Dr Sudhir

HOUSECALL Normal pressure hydrocephalus This condition, literally translated, means 'water on the brain'. Hydrocephalus is best known as a condition that affects babies and children. In these cases it is usually associated with a dangerous increase in pressure within the skull. NPH occurs in people in their 60s and 70s, and is not linked to an increase pressure within the skull.
Fact file
n Pregnant women sometimes experience RLS symptoms that go away after they give birth. n Many people find that regular exercise helps keep RLS under control. n RLS often runs in families and appears to be most prevalent among people of Western European descent has long hinted at a genetic component of the condition. n Studies have also linked RLS to high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction, possibly due to chronically interrupted sleep or factors involving dopamine in the brain. n Restoring iron levels in the body also can help restore dopamine in the brain, experts believe, which may help reduce RLS symptoms. Kumar, consultant neurologist at Apollo Hospital. He goes on to add that while there is no specific age group that is affected by RLS, he does see a lot of younger people in his OP. “In my practice so far, it has been uncommon in people below the age of 20 and above the age of 40.” The causes for this could be many. “It could either be idiopathic, where the cause is unknown, or it could happen due to certain medications that are taken over a period of time like anti-depressants, anti-psychotics and anti-epileptics. Conditions like diabetes, fibromyalgia and arthritis can also cause RLS. It has also been observed in pregnant women. However, this is not the case always,” says Dr Kumar. He adds, that while RLS does not really create any medical complications, the constant urge to move their limbs can interfere in their day-to-day lives. “There are a lot of treatments available for RLS these days. One could be identifying the underlying cause and treat it accordingly. Otherwise, increasing dopamine levels in the brain, iron supplements, exercise, stretching regimes and physiotherapy can also go a long way in helping curb this,” he adds.

Rudolf Virchow
Bodily sweat contains different pheromones, whether you are frightened or not. People can detect the differences in their smell. For example, when people sniff sweat from skydivers, it causes brain regions that react to fear to become active (which does not occur from sweat from treadmill users).
Rudolf Virchow was a German pathologist, anthropologist and statesman, widely credited for his advancements in public health. Known as the "father of pathology," his scientific contribution of cell theory explained the effects of disease on the body. He also developed a standard method of autopsy procedure. In 1869 he founded a society which greatly intensifying German archaeological research.

BREAKTHROUGH
RESEARCH This discovery may change how DBS is used to treat Parkinson's and other neurologically based movement disorders.
Better therapy hope for Parkinson's patients SAN FRANCISCO: In a path breaking study that could help develop new therapeutic devices for Parkinson's patients, US scientists have successfully worked out how to identify abnormal brain rhythms associated with the disease. A team of scientists and clinicians at UC San Francisco has discovered how to detect abnormal brain rhythms associated with Parkinson's by implanting electrodes within the brains of people with the disease. The work may lead to developing the next generation of
brain stimulation devices to alleviate symptoms for people with the disease, reports Science Daily. Described this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the work sheds light on how Parkinson's disease affects the brain, and is the first time anyone has been able to measure a quantitative signal from the disease within the cerebral cortex — the outermost layers of the brain that helps govern memory, physical movement and consciousness.
"Normally the individual cells of the brain are functioning independently much of the time, working together only for specific tasks," said neurosurgeon Philip Starr, MD, Ph.D, a professor of neurological surgery at UCSF and senior author of the paper. But in Parkinson's disease, he said, many brain cells display "excessive synchronization," firing together inappropriately most of the time. The new work also shows how deep brain stimulation (DBS), which electrifies regions
deeper in the brain, below the cortex, can affect the cortex, itself. This discovery may change how DBS is used to treat Parkinson's and other neurologically based movement disorders and it may help refine the technique for other types of treatment. Similar to putting a pacemaker inside a heart patient's chest, deep brain stimulation requires a neurosurgeon to implant electrodes inside tiny parts of the brain, to deliver electrical current. IANS
Scientists give insights into post-sleep paralysis MONTREAL: Canadian scientists have identified the factors that cause distress after sleep paralysis, a psychological phenomenon of which little was previously known, according to a study. Sleep paralysis is a distressing phenomenon often accompanied by vivid sensory or perceptual experiences, which can include complex and disturbing hallucinations and intense fear, which is often experienced by people immediately before sleeping or waking up. For some people, sleep paralysis is a once-in-a-lifetime experience; for others, it can be a frequent, even nightly, phenomenon, Science Daily reported. The study, conducted by researchers James Allan Cheyne and Gordon Pennycook of the University of Waterloo in Canada, was published published in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, and explores the factors associated with distress after sleep paralysis episodes. According to the study, the distressing sensory experiences that come with episodes of sleep paralysis could exacerbate people's fear. These findings are important, the researchers say, because they provide insight into a common experience of psychological distress that is not well understood. Some participants lamented that their experiences of terror following episodes of sleep paralysis were often dismissed by clinicians. IANS
STUDY
Study links HIV to heart attack risk WASHINGTON: Being HIV-positive raises a person's heart attack risk by about 50 per cent, said a study released Monday that confirms earlier findings. The study looked at 82,459 US veterans, the vast majority of them men. It was published in Archives of Internal Medicine, a publication of the Journal of the American Medical Association. It said that in three age groups, the average incidence of heart attack was consistently and significantly higher for people who are HIV-positive, compared to uninfected veterans. After adjusting for illness, smoking, alcohol consumption and risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, the HIV-positive subjects in the study had a 50 per cent higher risk of heart attack than
uninfected people. The research was led by Matthew Freiberg of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Several studies have shown that chronic activation of the immune system because of HIV infection prior to antiretroviral therapy seems to cause inflammation that apparently speeds up the aging process and leaves a person more vulnerable to illnesses associated with growing older. A study published in July by the JAMA showed that people who are HIV-positive have twice the risk of heart attack or stroke compared to uninfected people. The authors of that study linked this increased risk to inflammation of the arteries. AFP

Finding true inspiration
Searching for Mahesh
S
undeep Kishan is all set to make his debut in Tamil with a film titled Yaarudaa Mahesh. R Madan Kumar is directing the film. The film is a romantic comedy where the hero goes searching for a guy named Mahesh. Suresh Kondeti is releasing this film in Telugu and the Telugu version has been titled as Mahesh. The film will release later this month.
Unlike Hollywood and to an extent Bollywood, Telugu cinema has rarely found inspiration from real life incidents. Gundello Godari, which is based on the 1986 Godavari floods, is an exception in recent times. We look at few other films which followed this trend. HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com
H
ollywood has left no stone unturned in recreating important incidents from real life or those which hold historical significance on big screen. Some of the biggest films like Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Impossible, which were in contention for Oscars, were based on real stories. Contrary to this trend, Indian filmmakers haven’t explored real life stories on big screen as much as they should have. We have had scores of films based on India’s freedom struggle and freedom fighters like Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the past, apart from films
set in the backdrop of wars, riots and emergency. While Bollywood has an edge in such adaptations, Telugu filmmakers have shied away from jumping on to the bandwagon. Mass entertainers, action dramas and romantic comedies are in vogue these days. Under these circumstances, making a film like Gundello Godaari, which is set in the backdrop of the 1986 floods in Godavari region, seems like a bold move. The film is based on a book Godavari Kathalu, written by BVS Rama Rao. To recreate the flood sequence, producer Lakshmi Manchu took 27 acres of land on lease to set up a village set and later pump in water to shoot the flood sequence. It was a mammoth effort since
Pizza’s sequel to kickstart soon everything had to be painstakingly recreated. Authenticity remains one of the biggest issues while recreating actual incidents. Few years ago, RGV adapted the epic saga of the rivalry between Paritala Ravi and Maddalacheruvu Suri for Rakta Charitra. Since the film was based on real incidents, supporters of both Paritala Ravi and Suri were concerned about how exactly RGV was going to recreate the incidents. In 2011, Nagarjuna starrer Rajanna, which was set in the backdrop of the Razakars movement in erstwhile Hyderabad state, turned out to be one of the rare films which explored the uncharted territory. Executive producer Supriya instructed her team to scout through villages
in Telangana region to find artefacts which could be used as props for the film. Such extensive pre-production turns out to be a deterrent for most filmmakers. Ravi Babu’s Avunu, a horror thriller about a ghost which torments a young woman, was apparently inspired from a story which Yami Gautam had told the director. In recent times, perhaps no other theme has been as explored as the Telangana freedom struggle in scores of films. The biggest problem, so far, for these films has been the notion that people might not be interested to watch a film knowing the truth. Unless that changes, adapting real life stories on silver screen and expecting big returns will remain a distant dream.
C
V Kumaran, who recently produced Karthik Subbaraj’s Pizza, is gearing up to produce a sequel to the horror thriller. The next film in the franchise, titled Villa, will be directed by Deepan Chakravarthy. Vaibhav Reddy and Sanchita Shetty are going to play the lead roles. The film is expected to go on floors in April this year.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Azarenka aims for repeat Victoria Azarenka arrives for her title defense seeking another victory. INDIAN WELLS, CALIFORNIA: Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka (right) arrives for her title defense at Indian Wells seeking another victory to take her closer to regaining the world No. 1 ranking. A title repeat on the hard courts of the California desert won't send Azarenka back to the top of the heap, but it could set the stage for a showdown with current No. 1 Serena
Williams later in March in Miami. Once again, Williams and her sister Venus are skipping the BNP Paribas Open, where other notable absentees include China's Li Na. World No. 5 Li is still battling the nagging effects of the left ankle injury she suffered in losing the Australian Open final to Azarenka. Women's main draw play in the combined WTA and ATP Masters

NEW YORK: Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. on Tuesday announced plans for a new multi-sport network for the US market called Fox Sports 1 to challenge ESPN' dominance. The launch had been widely anticipated as the conglomerate pursues a plan to split its publishing operations from its film and entertainment units. "Our secret, admittedly a very poorly kept one, is now revealed," said Fox Sports Media Group co-president Eric Shanks. "Fans are ready for an alternative to the establishment and our goal for FS1 is to provide the best in-game experience possible complemented by informative news, entertaining studio shows and provocative original programming." To launch August 17, the new network will include Major League Baseball, college basketball, American football, Ultimate Fighting Championship, Nascar racing and international football matches. The network will also carry sports news and talk and a nightly roundup. A morning newscast is expected to launch in January 2014 in conjunction with the network's coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII. "Building credibility and trust with our audience is paramount, so naturally we'll provide the staples, like news, scores and highlights, but we'll do it in a Fox Sports way," said Shanks. AFP

NEW YORK: Oklahoma City Thunder forward Serge Ibaka was slapped with a $25,000 fine for striking Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin in the groin during a game on Sunday, the NBA said on Tuesday. Ibaka was initially whistled for a level one flagrant foul. In addition to the fine, league officials upgraded the foul to a more serious flagrant two but decided not to suspend him. The incident occurred with 1:52 to play in the Thunder's 108-104 victory over the Clippers. Matt Barnes had made a three-pointer to cut the
Thunder's lead to 99-96. Replays showed that during the play, Ibaka first grabbed Griffin's right arm and then struck him in the groin area, causing Griffin to crumple to the court. Griffin said after the game he was "kinda" surprised Ibaka wasn't called for a flagrant two foul and ejected from the game. Ibaka insisted his below the belt hit wasn't intentional. "I just wanted to try to get position and he has his hands on me, so I'm going to try to sweep (my hand) to get in position to go get a rebound," Ibaka said. AFP

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ROUND OF 16 In a breathless game, Nani forced Sergio Ramos to put through his own goal in the 48th minute to give United a 2-1 aggregate lead in the last 16 tie, only for the Portuguese winger to then be sent off for a foul on Alvaro Arbeloa.

I don't think the manager is in any fit state to talk to the referee about the decision. I think it speaks volumes that I'm here speaking to you and not the manager.
TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse MANCHESTER: Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal as Real Madrid controversially came from behind to win 2-1 at Manchester United on Tuesday and reach the Champions League quarter-finals. In a breathless game, Nani forced Sergio Ramos to put through his own goal in the 48th minute to give United a 2-1 aggregate lead in the last 16 tie, only for the Portuguese winger to then be sent off for a foul on Alvaro Arbeloa. Madrid immediately seized the initiative, equalising through substitute Luka Modric in the 66th minute and then earning victory through United old boy Ronaldo on his return to Old Trafford.
I do not have words to explain how I feel. The supporters made me feel shy as I did not play how I play all the time. I feel a little happy. [But] I feel sad as United are out.

opposition to Giggs, who started the match in an unfamiliar role on the right flank. Giggs roused the home fans with a determined run down the wing in the 20th minute and from the corner he won, United came within a hair's breadth of taking the lead. Despite shading the first half in terms of opportunities, United had nothing to show for their efforts.
[Sir Alex Ferguson’s] every decision is correct. He's the best, he's the top. You are nobody, I am nobody, to put a question mark in front. His team was very well-organised. Real manager, Jose Mourinho
Dashing Dortmund crush Shakhtar Having drawn 2-2 in Ukraine three weeks ago in the first leg, Borussia go through 5-2 on aggregate. RYLAND JAMES Agence France-Presse DORTMUND: Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the Champions League's quarterfinals for the first time in 15 years with a 3-0 win at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in Tuesday's last 16, second leg tie. Having drawn 2-2 in Ukraine three weeks ago in the first leg, Borussia go through 5-2 on aggregate as goals by Felipe Santana, Mario Goetze and Jakub 'Kuba' Blaszczykowski capped the German champions' dominant display.
On the eve of the match, Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu predicted the winner of this tie would reach the final at London's Wembley on May 25. Dortmund are in the last eight for the first time since 1998 when, as defending champions, they lost in the semi-finals. "We knew we had a huge chance to reach the quarter-finals and we delivered a great perfor-
mance," said goal-scorer Goetze. "Obviously scoring two goals in the first half gave us a lot of confidence." On the eve of the match, Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu boldly predicted the winner of this tie would reach the final at London's Wembley on May 25 and Dortmund gave his statement some credibility with an impressive performance. Before his side crashed out at the hands of Real Madrid at home on Tuesday, Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson had tipped Dortmund to win the title.

AUSTRALIA’S TOUR OF INDIA
‘Retain Dhoni as skipper’ Impressed by the changed leadership style of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sunil Gavaskar said that he should continue as India’s captain till the 2019 World Cup. NEW DELHI: Impressed by the changed leadership style of MS Dhoni (batting in pic), Sunil Gavaskar on Tuesday said that he should continue as India’s captain till the 2019 World Cup. Gavaskar feels that Dhoni has changed his captaincy approach after the debacle against Australia and England and is now much-more assertive on the field. “The one month he had after the home series loss against England had given him time for introspection. He has changed positively as a captain. Now, if a player is not attentive and not upto the mark, Dhoni is letting him know. He is not making too many gestures but he is making

PCB chief backs Whatmore KARACHI: Pakistan’s cricket chief threw his weight behind under-fire coach Dav Whatmore on Tuesday, after the national team’s 3-0 Test whitewash in South Africa, saying he was doing a good job. Whatmore, appointed Pakistan coach a year ago, came in for severe criticism from former captains Wasim Akram, Moin Khan and Rashid Latif who called for the former Australian batsman to be sacked. Appointed on a two-year contract, Whatmore guided Pakistan to the Asia Cup title and a one-day series win over archrivals India but lost consecutive Test series in Sri Lanka and South Africa. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf vowed there will be no hasty decisions on Whatmore’s future. AFP

With the changed leadership approach I think he should not be disturbed till the 2019 World Cup. We should not even discuss it (of changing captaincy),” said Gavaskar when asked if Dhoni’s form and inspiring captaincy in the ongoing series against Australia has given him a breathing space after the recent string of losses. Gavaskar, who had said after the home series against England that Dhoni should take a break from captaincy, however, said that it’s upto the skipper to decide whether to play till 2019.

Ashes doubt as Swann faces surgery Swann faces a race against time to be fit for the Ashes double-header after injury forced him out of the NZ Test series. DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND: England’s Graeme Swann faces a race against time to be fit for this year’s Ashes doubleheader after injury forced him out of the Test series against New Zealand on Wednesday. Swann was a surprise omission from the tourists’ side to face the Black Caps in the first Test, with officials later confirming a long-standing problem with his right elbow had flared up, requiring surgery. “(He) clearly couldn’t get through the five days,” Captain Alastair Cook said after Monty Panesar was named to replace Swann in the first

rest of the series. Swann had bone fragments removed from his elbow in 2009 but the surgery was only partially successful and the 33-year-old said he experienced pain in the joint during a warm-up loss to a New Zealand XI last week. In a column for Britain’s Sun newspaper this week, he said he feared the troublesome elbow could jeopardise his chances of playing in home-andaway Ashes series this year. Two editions of the marquee series against Australia are being played back-to-back to avoid a clash with the 2015 World Cup. AFP
First day of opening Test washed out DUNEDIN: Bad light and heavy rain prevented play on the first day of the opening Test between New Zealand and England on Wednesday. The Black Caps won the toss and chose to bowl in overcast conditions, hoping for early swing, but conditions worsened and the teams were unable to take the field. Play was officially called off after an inspection at the tea interval. While England go into the three-Test series as firm favourites, they suffered a blow when Swann was forced from the side at the last minute after a long-standing elbow injury flared up, requiring surgery by a US specialist. Sunny weather is forecast for Thursday, which may favour the English batsmen. AFP
PARIS-NICE RACE
Kittel wins stage as Viviani crashes out FRANCE: Germany’s Marcel Kittel won the second stage of the Paris-Nice race, a 200.5km ride from Vimory to Cerilly, on Tuesday. However, the overall lead is held by Italian Elia Viviani, who benefited from overnight leader French champion Nacer Bouhanni crashing out of the race when he came to grief 58km
from the finish and suffered a mouth injury. The 22-year-old was later diagnosed with two broken teeth and needed eight stitches to repair the split lip. “The x-rays revealed no fractures or even any cracked ribs which was what we feared,” said FDJ team doctor Gerard Guillaume.
The 24-year-old Kittel - who counts a stage win on the Tour of Spain in 2011 amongst his honours - overtook four riders, including Viviani, to take the stage in a sprint finish. Viviani finished second with Australian Leigh Howard taking the final place on the podium. “I am very happy to have had this opportunity,” said Kittel. AFP
