Anand Vidyalaya, under the umbrella of Dhyan Yog Society is an educational initiative dedicated to working with children, families and their communities to help them overcome the social injustice and poverty regardless of religion, race, ethnicity and gender.
The Foundation The Volunteers of the Dhyan Foundation started distributing food to urchins roaming on the streets.
The Dhyan foundation has been working towards helping children and families suffering from social injustice and poverty
In anticipation of more food, these children began visiting the volunteers’ houses even at odd hours seeking food. Questions on how to get these children educated haunted the volunteers, hence
the birth of Anand Vidyalaya. The beginning was made on an empty plot with a blackboard, pieces of chalk and used study material given by the children of volunteers of the Dhyan
Foundation.
Landmark Soon the thirst for learning took over and the meal just became part of the routine. Another leaf in
this story was opening of Anand Vidyalaya in Attapur. Presently, more than 100 students attend morning classes and evening tuition every day. “The curriculum has been modeled along the lines of that in private schools, with two full time teachers and many volunteers interacting with the kids. Computer education classes are also slated to begin shortly. In addition to the studies, a host of extracurricular activities are organized for the kids to learn, while having fun” said, Nitesh Viajy Vargiya, in-charge for the Hyderabad center. “In the mornings, over 40 students in the age group of 3 to 5 attend the classes, while nearly around 80 students take tutorial classes in evening. The students are also served snacks between the classes. Educational games are provided” he added.

ceremonial robe, asserted that she did not resign because of the political arrangement between the Congress and the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehaadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). She was stepping down of her own will. Stating that she was thoroughly satisfied with her eventful tenure as the City Mayor, Karthika listed out her achievements during her two years in office. She claimed that she was titled as the most eco-friendly mayor. Banning of use of plastic carry bags and development of greenery were her biggest achievements, she added. Several call centres to attend to public grievances came up during her
regime. The GHMC had taken up numbering of houses in the entire GHMC area. She said that the GHMC developed two sports complexes — one at Chanda Nagar, and the other the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex. Karthika explained how the faceto-face programme had enhanced the two-way public interaction over their grievances. MIM Corporator Jaffar Hussein, who also tendered his resignation from the post of deputy mayor, said that his party was accepting the resignation of the mayor and asserted that the new mayor could take forward the ‘good work’ done by Karthika. He said that Karthika took Hyderabad to international standards. He also said that the citizens’ service centres had developed ever since she took over. TDP floor leader Singireddy Srinivasa Reddy, who also acknowledged the services of Karthika, said the plastic carry bag ban implementation was a great success. During her tenure women’s groups had got a lot of recognition. The new mayor too, should continue these things. He insisted that Karthika continued as to be a pro tem Mayor until a new incumbent assumed charge.

ears ago, an unexpected visitor knocked on Dwarakanath Reddy's door seeking help, as the urban world he ventured into did not understand the plight of a poor artisan. His story was just one of the many that Dwarakanath and Anitha did not hear about. But their determination to help the poor families, and revive the Kalamkari art took them all the way to Srikalahasthi, a small town in southern Andhra Pradesh from where the poor artisan had come. Today, DWARAKA as an institution has helped around 3000 rural individuals who practice the art of Kalamkari painting. Postnoon spoke to Anitha Reddy, the daughter of Dwarakanath Reddy and the managing trustee of Ramanarpanam (DRRT) under which the DWARAKA foundation was initiated . She tells us, "We as a family believed that more than just reviving an art, it is important to create an environment that is secure, to help the artisans gain confidence in their work. Self-identity, self-reliance and ownership, I believe are key to any success". Anitha's passion to help the rural-folk is not new to

hey are the people who selflessly risk their lives every night only because you can wake up to clean city streets the next morning. We are talking about the unsung heroes of the city — the hundreds of sweepers employed by the GHMC whose existence we disregard when we speed past them late in the night and don’t realize how much danger we expose them to. Ask them how they feel while doing their job and they unanimously agree that they are scared of the speeding vehicles that pass by, especially when the vehicle is steered by a drunk driver. Earlier this year, two sweepers died while on job after they were hit by a speeding SUV near Vengal Rao Park in Banjara Hills. There are many more such cases that go unreported in the city. City police say that they have recently come across a gang of bikers who challenge each other to touch the broom or go over it without colliding with the sweeper.

The sweepers are merely given reflector jackets which are not enough to save their lives. In cold winter nights, the risk is doubled due to the fog that descends on the roads. Moreover, the sweepers have to face harassment from their contractors who give a hard time while paying as these workers are paid on a daily wage basis. “I am petrified especially when I am near the divider. Speeding vehicles can hurt us and the municipality hasn’t provided us with enough safety,” laments T Vishnu, 35, who sweeps the roads at Masab Tank along with three other women. “We don’t enjoy our job because it involves putting our lives in grave danger. The worst thing is that the drivers don’t have apathy towards us and treat us as if we are a hindrance on the road,” says Akki Laxmi, 40, a sweeper. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), C V Anand requests the motorists to be careful and watch out for the sweepers. “They are doing the noble job of keeping the streets clean and we should give them their due respect.”

PCC chief to have his own team U Srinivas
HYDERABAD: APCC Chief Botsa Satyanarayna is a busy man these days. He is in a buoyant mood after his return from New Delhi. Soon enough, Botsa tried to paint a rosy picture by asserting that everything is hunky dory between him and the chief minister. Now he is gearing up for a major overhaul in the party’s organisational structure by inducting new faces to key positions in a couple of days. On the other hand, speculation is rife that Botsa himself could be dropped from the Cabinet, as he is the APCC chief. With an eye on the future, he is preparing to appoint his own points-men to circumvent any trouble from any quarter. Botsa confirmed that soon he would be appointing new presidents for the District Congress Committees (DCCs). A new team to fight the upcoming by-elections and local body polls will be in place soon.

Campaigns, hard news and spirit of Twin Cities
He has already discussed the appointments and said to have secured ‘clearance’ on the appointments from Delhi. Botsa has already shortlisted the candidates and it is said that he would be taking the local ministers into confidence before making a formal announcement. However, he is also trying to ensure that the new appointments
do not displease other power centres in the party. There is a possibility of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy throwing in a list of his own. Tirupati MLA Chiranjeevi, who is sulking from time to time over his post, is trying to edge out some old guards of the party to accommodate his group in key positions. However, former APCC President D Srinivas, who made a comeback of sorts to the mainstream activity through the Legislative Council, is making efforts to do ‘justice’ to his loyalists. Besides the DCC presidents, major changes are likely in the APCC State body. Botsa is specially focussing on areas where the party leaders switched their loyalties to the YSR Congress party. Botsa is also under pressure to maintain the regional balance apart from taking local caste equations into account. Filling nominated posts will follow after this, but most of them have to secure the nod of the chief minister.

It’s all media creation?
W
here are the success stories? No collector so far seems to have had any success or implemented any programme. The Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy had asked the collectors to come up with their success stories but so far nothing has been reported. Senior ministers Anam Ramnarayna Reddy and Botsa Satyanarayna have clarified that there were no differences between the ministers and the chief minister. Minister for Home Sabitha Indira Reddy said it was clarified that the chief minister and the home minster would review the law-and-order situation. It was a clear indication that the other ministers need not be present. But minister Shanker Rao came for the review and made a big issue on being sent away. Now the latest is that there are rumours on the differences between the PCC chief and the chief minister, the deputy CM and chief minister and some ministers and the chief minister. Minister for Finance Anam Ramnarayan Reddy told Postnoon that these differences are all media creations. Earlier, the media wrote about
development stories, success stories and review of agendas. But now side stories have become the main news, he stated. “The ministers can definitely express their views, but that should not be dubbed as if they are against the chief minister”, he clarified. In fact, Kiran Kumar Reddy has had a second meeting with police officers at the DGP office along with the home minister, chief secretary and the DGP. The chief minister insisted that the police must be there for the common man who should be able to approach them without any fear. PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayna clarified that he was in Delhi and it was the prerogative of the chief minister to appoint his ministers. This indicates that Botsa was in coordination with both the chief minister and the high command.

he state government pointed out to the collectors and SPs the dismal manner in which the Bonded Labour Act has been implemented in districts across AP. While most districts have not even furnished a report, districts like Karimnagar, Khammam, Krishna, Vijayanagaram and Rangareddy have submitted a nil report. The district magistrates have been empowered under section 11 and 12 of the Bonded Labour systems act 1976 to identify, release and rehabilitate bonded Labour and launch prosecutions against their employers. The government has reminded that the NHRC has taken a serious view on non-submission of the information on Bonded labour and also summoned the Chief Secretary in this regard. The district collectors must mention the action taken in their reports to the NHRC. Trafficking of girls, boys and women is the most heinous form of bonded/forced labour and the worst violation of human rights the government pointed out. All efforts need to be made for preventing trafficking by skill training and poverty amelioration efforts. Rescuing trafficked children from brothels and from the clutches of pimps, middlemen, and their rehabilitation is the need of the hour. It is necessary to ensure their reintegration into the mainstream of social development through education, psychological counselling and development of skills.
n The information feedback about inter-state migrant workmen needs to be strengthened. n There is an urgent and imperative need to switch over from an individual beneficiary oriented approach to a community group oriented approach for rehabilitation. n High dropout rates in school has to arrested. n Action needs to be taken on the prosecutions already launched and ensure that severe punishment is imposed on brokers and middlemen who encourage bonded labour. n The vigilance committees should go out to make enquiries in the field instead of meeting and dispersing at the district and sub divisional level. n The district collectors were suggested to take action for effective implementation of the constituting vigilance committees in accordance with circular Memo no-3695/H2/97-1,of 9-6-1997.

T
hese days it is common to come across a burning pile of garbage on the road. It is the shubhrakhs (rag-pickers employed by the GHMC), who after cleaning the roads, pile-up the garbage and set it ablaze. They do so as they don’t want to take the effort to dump garbage into the assigned area bin. Environmentalists are up in arms against the environmental hazards of such ‘incinerators’. A typical pile of garbage consists mostly of dried leaves, plastic bags, biodegradable waste and in rare instances, metal. The particulates emitted by burning trash, in
the long run, can be a source of lung cancer, says environmental engineer Sagar Dhara. “Dioxin and other chemicals are invisible, and their health effects are not immediate. The gases that are discharged include nitrogen oxide and sometimes sulphur. This can lead to asthma in children and bronchitis in adults,” he adds. Major Shiva Kiran, president, Sukuki Exnora, an NGO that deals with environmental issues, says that there is no machinery to lift the garbage from the ground and hence the easier method is to incinerate the garbage. “The shubhrakhs are so used to doing it now that even if we go stop them personally, they defy. This activity happens mostly in the morning.
The most dangerous part is the burning of plastic. As everybody knows, it spells doom,” he says. Environmentalist Indira Lingam of Jubilee Hills Exnora agrees, “Hyderabad’s air pollution is skyrocketing and these incinerators will make it worse. Children are the worst-affected.” The GHMC claims to be doing their best to avoid the burning of garbage. “We have assigned one of the shubhrakhs to be the bin supervisor and make sure that the garbage is disposed off in the right place. We have also specifically told the assistant medical officer to pass this message onto them,” asserts Samrat Ashok, Joint Commissioner for Health and Sanitation, GHMC.

‘Indo-US tie key for world order’ PUNE: Hailing India as one of the most important nations in current global scenario, the US today said the strategic engagement between the two nations was key to ensure a peaceful and prosperous international order, apart from benefits to each other. “The story of how we work together to ensure a peaceful and prosperous international order is as ambitious as it is profound. It is a deeply strategic endeavour that we can and must pursue together. It is work that will define a generation,” Deputy Secretary of State William J Burns said addressing a gathering at Pune University. Calling for further enhancing cooperation between the two countries, he said both India and the US can contribute in building a more secure, stable, democratic and just global system. “Across the world, I believe that India and America — with so many converging interests, shared values and common concerns – are natural partners in building a more secure, stable, democratic and just global system. “India can make a decisive

Nancy J Powell, a career diplomat with wide experience in South Asia, has been named by US President Barack Obama as the next ambassador to India, the first woman to be nominated for the coveted post. 64-year-old Powell would replace Timothy J Roemer, who resigned from his post in April 2011 following a two-year stint as US envoy to India, after going through a confirmation process by the Senate. Peter Burleigh is currently serving as the Charge d’affaires of the US embassy in India. Powell, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, earlier served as US ambassador to Pakistan and Nepal and also held various diplomatic posts in Kolkata, New Delhi, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Islamabad and Ottawa. “These fine public servants both bring a depth of experience and tremendous dedica-
tion to their new roles,” Obama said in a statement announcing Powell’s appointment and that of Dick Berner, who has been named Director, Office of Financial Research, Department of Treasury. “Our nation will be well-served by these individuals, and I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come,” he said. Presently serving as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources at the Department of State, Powell was conferred the personal rank of Career Ambassador in January 2011. Prior to her current assignment, Powell served as Ambassador to Nepal (20072009), Ambassador to Pakistan (2002-2004), Ambassador to Ghana (2001-2002), and Ambassador to Uganda (19971999). PTI

We need to play our cards right and be smart: Clegg N ick Clegg has accused Eurosceptics of stoking xenophobia and chauvinism by indulging in “the politics of grievance”, on the day that a diplomatic war of words between Britain and France intensified. The Liberal Democrat leader called for calm and vowed to return Britain to the heart of Europe despite David Cameron’s decision last week to veto a treaty planned to rescue the Euro. Speaking at the end of one of the most politically fraught weeks for the coalition, he said it was “very significant” that the British government had agreed to co-operate with Europe by allowing Eurozone countries to use EU community institutions, such as the commission and European court of justice, to enforce its new fiscal agreement. He said “As the dust settles on last week’s summit, the government over the past few days has already taken some very big
British Deputy PM Nick Clegg at Downing street AFP steps to re-engage, get back in the saddle and get back into the mainstream of the debate.” Nonetheless, cross-channel relations hit new lows on Friday as the French prime minister, François Fillon, appeared to urge credit rating agencies to train their fire on the UK as opposed
to French banks. Clegg said the remarks were unacceptable: “I just think we all need to go away, have a bit of hiatus, a bit of time to have Christmas, to eat some mince pies or whatever the French equivalent is. Everyone is a bit tired.” He said Britain may have been caught in the crossfire of the French presidential election. “There is nothing more popular in French politics – it has always been the case and it will always be so. At the end of the day, France and Britain have always worked out it is better to work together rather than shout at each other across the channel.” No 10 indicated that Cameron fully backed his coalition partner’s rebuke of the French PM for his comments. French officials insisted last week that ministers had not been seeking to criticise British government economic policy or its creditworthiness, but acknowledged there was some
residual French pique at the way in which chancellor George Osborne appeared to use a BBC interview to bracket the French economy alongside that of Greece and Portugal. Facing the threat of isolation since the summit, Clegg has been working to undo the damage, firstly by heading off any British attempt to block the eurozone countries from being able to use EU institutions to help enforce its deficit pact; and secondly by ensuring observer status for UK officials at meetings of the euro group. “If we play our cards right and are smart, far from being at the margins of that debate Britain can be at the centre. What everyone in business tells me is clearly they want Britain right at the heart of the ongoing debate about the evolution of the single market,” he said. Clegg admitted the summit had done little to solve the euro crisis.

7-year term for ‘Barefoot Bandit’
T
he 20-year-old “Barefoot Bandit” has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison after pleading guilty to dozens of charges. Colton Harris-Moore gained international notoriety while evading police across America in stolen planes, boats and cars during a twoyear crime spree. Judge Vickie Churchill said “this case is a tragedy in many ways, but it’s a triumph of the human spirit in other ways”. She described HarrisMoore’s upbringing as a “mind numbing absence of hope”, and believed he was genuinely remorseful .Friday’s proceedings consolidated cases against Harris-Moore in three Washington state counties. He has already pleaded guilty to federal charges in Seattle and will be sentenced for those crimes early next year. He will serve his state and federal sentences at the same time. He said he’ll use his prison time to study and get ready to apply to college, with the hope of earning an aeronautical engineering degree.
military officer overseeing the hearing of the US Army analyst accused of leaking government secrets has rejected a request to recuse himself. The request was made by a defence lawyer for Private Bradley Manning, 23, as he appeared at a military court. He faces 22 charges of obtaining and distributing government secrets - which he allegedly leaked to anti-secrecy site Wikileaks. The Article 32 hearing will determine whether Pte Manning is to stand trial. During the hearing, which is expected to last around five days according to the defence team, prosecution and defence lawyers will each make their initial cases and are permitted to cross-examine witnesses. Friday’s session has adjourned and the hearing is due to resume on Saturday.
Proceeding to trial The hearing offers the first opportunity for Pte Manning’s defence team to present their case since he was arrested in Iraq in May 2010 and placed in military custody. It is taking place under tight security at an army base at Fort Meade, Maryland. Pte Manning sat in the courtroom dressed in military
An Officer stands outside a court during the trial of AFP Bradley Manning khaki and wearing blackrimmed glasses. But his defence team quickly switched focus by asking for the investigating officer - equivalent to a judge in a civilian court - to withdraw from the case. Defence lawyer David Coombs said Lt Col Paul Almanza, the investigating officer, was “biased”. Lt Col Almanza is a former military judge who now works for the Department of Justice, which has its own investigation into Wikileaks. His refusal to accept all but two of 38 defence
witnesses meant the defence could not adequately make their case, Mr Coombs said. Following two recesses and arguments by the prosecution and the defence, the investigating officer refused to recuse himself and the hearing continued. Afterwards, recommendations will be made to a military general, who will decide whether to proceed to a full trial. The BBC’s Paul Adams says the soldier’s defence team is likely to argue that little harm came of the leaks, and that their release was in the greater public interest.
Assange link? Pte Manning has also been charged with “aiding the enemy”, a charge that could carry the death penalty. However, reports say prosecutors will only seek a prison sentence. He is accused of the unauthorised possession and distribution of more than 720,000 secret diplomatic and military documents. “If it is the case that Bradley Manning is indeed the source of this and other Wikileaks materials, Manning would have single-handedly changed hundreds of thousands of people’s lives for the better,” Wikileaks said in a statement.

GLOBE AT A GLANCE RIGHTS GROUPS CRITICISE SRI LANKA WAR REPORT WASHINGTON: International human rights groups criticized a Sri Lankan report Friday on the island’s civil war and called for more accountability after the commission cleared the military of key charges. The Sri Lankan government commission, in a 400-page report, concluded that the military did not deliberately target civilians during the final stages of the conflict as forces wiped out the Tamil Tiger rebel leadership.
FUKUSHIMA SITE IS FINALLY STABILISED: JAPAN PM TOKYO: The crippled nuclear reactors at Japan’s Fukushima power plant have finally been stabilised, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced on Friday. An earthquake and tsunami in March knocked out vital cooling systems, triggering radiation leaks and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people. Noda’s declaration of a “cold shutdown” condition marked the stabilisation of the plant, BBC reported.

Utd, City face tough games M
anchester City and Manchester United will both face difficult matches in the last 32 of the Europa League after Roberto Mancini’s side drew holders Porto and their neighbours were paired with fellow Champions League dropouts Ajax. The Barclays Premier League pair were among the biggest names to be edged out of the Champions League group stages, both finishing third and being parachuted into Friday’s draw in Nyon. While many expected the demotion to Europe’s second tier would be a blow to the pair’s prestige, both fixtures would not be out of place in the Champions League knockout phase. Porto, who secured the trophy last year under the guidance of now Chelsea boss Andre VillasBoas, host City in the first leg before a return fixture at the Etihad Stadium, while United will play in the Amsterdam ArenA first. idier Drogba needs a goal at Wigan tomorrow to draw level with Chelsea legends Peter Osgood and Roy Bentley in the club’s scoring charts. But the striker, on 149 goals, never thought he would be good enough to match the feats of Osgood and Bentley, who are fourth in the list of Chelsea’s all-time top scorers, especially after a difficult first season in England. “I didn’t consider reaching that number [Osgood and Bentley’s 150 goals] when I arrived here, especially when my first season did not go really well,” said the Ivory Coast international, who joined the club from Marseille for £24million in 2004. “I struggled fitness-wise when I came but I made myself play because I had to show what I could do as a new player,” he explained. anchester City manager Roberto Mancini has laughed off the latest controversy surrounding fiery striker Mario Balotelli. The Italy forward was involved in a training ground bust-up with Micah Richards on Thursday. It was the fourth time Balotelli has been pictured fighting with team-mates, contributing to a chequered history at City, which also includes three red cards and, most recently, attempts to release fireworks from inside his Cheshire home, which required the fire brigade to be called out. “I ask him ‘why always you?’” said Mancini.
REDKNAPP WILL NOT FACE DISCIPLINARY ACTION
T

Redknapp had been barracked by a section of the home fans and seemed to react angrily midway through the second half.UEFA said they were waiting to see if the incident was mentioned in two reports before deciding whether Redknapp would face any charge of improper conduct.

Dyer, who signed for Rangers as a free agent after being released by West Ham in the summer, will have an operation on Monday to cure the problem, but faces several more weeks on the sidelines.

At the Stadio Friuli a banner which was derogatory about UEFA was unfurled by fans.
Playing Field Boyce cherishes bowling to Sachin, Dravid CANBERRA: Though it was a practice match for the Indians but for young leg-spinner Cameron Boyce, who is just beginning his career, it was an experience he wouldn't forget soon as he got to strut his stuff against players he has grown up admiring. The 22-year-old took 2 for 74 on the second and final day of the practice match between the Indians and Cricket Australia Chairman's XI. Awed by the experienced line up that had big names such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, Boyce said he loved the experience of bowling to them. "Tendulkar has been so good for so long. To bowl to someone like him, and to Laxman and Dravid as well, was a fantastic experience for me and my team as a whole. We all enjoy seeing these blokes," said Boyce, who has just started playing first class cricket with Queensland. "The way they use their hands in general. They play a lot later. PAK CHOOSE TO FIELD AFTER FOG DELAYED START MIRPUR: Misbah-ul-Haq had no hesitation
MELBOURNE: Former India coach Greg Chappell will address the out of form Australian cricketers before the first Test starting on December 26 to reveal them the chinks in Sachin Tendulkar's armour, according to a report. According a report in Daily Telegraph, Chappell will address the Australian team next week on how to tackle the likes of Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag in the gruelling Test series beginning in

Melbourne. "Chappell will address the Australian squad for the first Test next week and he is the one man with the knowledge to demystify the champion (Tendulkar) Australia never feel they have got to the bottom of," the report said. "To Australian bowlers Tendulkar has been the master they have never mastered. His record against Australia in Tests — he averages 60.6 with 11 centuries in 31 Tests —
makes him the greatest Aussie basher of his generation," it said. Chappell, in his just released autobiography Fierce Focus, has said that Tendulkar was "surprisingly fragile" during a particular phase in his career when he had to cope with struggling form and a tennis elbow injury. Chappell had a controversial three-year stint as India coach from 2005-07. in opting to bowl on a misty morning after fog and dew delayed the toss by 80 minutes in Mirpur, reported ESPNcricinfo. Pakistan had fielded first even on the flat wicket in Chittagong where they started with the parttime spin of Mohammad Hafeez. While the earlier decision seemed to be a bit of a gamble by the Pakistan captain, the dewheavy conditions in Mirpur would have encouraged him to ask the struggling Bangladesh batting to face an examination against Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema. Bangladesh went in with as many as three fast bowlers, with Nazmul Hossain chosen to play only his second Test.
WARNE SAYS HE COULD NOT RESIST BIG BASH COMEBACK CANBERRA: Shane Warne said he could not resist the chance to bowl before his son in the Big Bash T20 tournament, Australia’s replica of the IPL. In his column for the Daily Telegraph he wrote,”It is new and we are doing things never done before on a cricket field, which is why I agreed to sign up. I am going to be ‘miked up’ during every game and talk the television viewer through every ball I bowl.” Warne assured that his bowling arm is all right following fears he would give the tourney a miss due to burn injuries he suffered in while cooking. “But the bandage came off my hand yesterday and my fingers are fine,” wrote Warne.
DE VILLIERS BACKS FIELDERS DESPITE DOUBTFUL CATCH MELBOURNE: AB de Villiers fell one short of his 13th Test century but still believes South Africa already have enough runs to have put the match beyond Sri Lanka, a report in a TVchannel said. On a pitch that has offered something to the bowlers throughout, South Africa's currently lead by 209 runs with a wicket in hand. De Villiers was dismissed for 99 after lashing at a wide ball and being caught at point by Sri Lanka's substitute fielder Dimuth Karunaratne. Replays showed that that there may have been some doubt about whether the ball had carried, but de Villiers chose not to review the decision.

DOWN TO THE LAST DROP INDIA’S BATTLE WITH ALCOHOLISM Sukant Khurana
S
IMPLE economic, age, gender and professional dimensions that define alcohol consumption patterns in small homogenous western nations are insufficient in a multi-layered society like India. Despite adoption of western lifestyles, middle class in urban India has yet to entirely do away with the old mores and values. For few in the big city, the old values are still the core of their identity, while for others they are suitable pretences, resulting in schizophrenic environment where youngsters grow up absorbing the worst of both the eastern and the western influences. Rural India is witnessing a different yet equally seismic shift, where the old joint-family value system and associated economic enterprises are collapsing and people are moving away from traditional professions. There is significant migration in search of livelihood due to ever shrinking size of the agricultural land holdings. Apart from the stress of displacement, a break from one’s communities also removes the social safety net that keeps check on alcohol abuse. In some previously semiarid and moderately populated regions, improvements in irrigation and industrialisation of agriculture has created excess wealth and removed the need for few previously agricultural people to work with their own hands. Instant money for these people and also for the land holders in areas near big cities where prices of real estate have skyrocketed has resulted in youngsters who do not know
how to handle their newfound wealth and are prone to addiction. Alcohol abuse combined with ready availability of opium-derived drugs seeping in from our western borders has resulted in a whole generation of addicts in Punjab, Jammu, Haryana and parts of Rajasthan. In the flux of values and economic relations of our multilayered society, four denominators can describe the major pillars of alcohol-related problems in India: 1) lack of information 2) adulteration of alcohol 3) inefficient alcohol regulation policies and 4) paucity of appropriate medical intervention. While the debate over the merits of alcohol consumption is hotly contested worldwide, views about alcohol consumption in India usually do not come in shades of gray but often in black and white. There is a taboo concerning alcohol consumption in any amount, especially by women and conservative sections of the society, but also in general due to religious teachings of the Vaishnav sect of Sanatan Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, and Arya Samaj and the remnants of antialcohol Gandhian drive. Actual practice of alcohol consumption is altogether a different matter, which covers the whole gamut from healthy consumption to fatal abuse. History has taught us that making something a taboo does not solve the problem: it only makes the forbidden fruit more tempting. Taboos encourage closeted and unsafe behaviour. In the case of alcohol it is binge drinking and in that of premarital relationships unsafe sex. Humans have been enjoying alcoholic beverages since prehistoric times. Alcohol has been celebrated in the Vedic hymns, Shaivism, Buddhism, Tantra, streams of Catholicism, and
many indigenous animist and tribal traditions that celebrate alcohol in moderation. In fact many anthropologists and biologists claim that it is likely that alcohol from fermented grains was used as food source much before the bread was invented. In fact, if consumed in moderate amounts over many years, alcohol can have numerous positive health consequences. Moderate amounts of alcohol have been co-related with reducing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, improving cardiac functioning, and reducing stroke incidences, type 2
I hope as India strives to maintain its much hyped growth rate, it also stops its infantile approach in dealing with alcoholism and many other health issues diabetes, osteoporosis, gallbladder diseases, arthritis, renal cell carcinoma, thyroid cancer, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma among many other diseases. When alcohol is consumed in an uncontrolled and excessive manner the story, however, is much different. Binge drinking, especially as a repeat pattern, is associated with many health problems including alcohol poisoning, liver sclero-
sis, cardiovascular diseases, sexual dysfunction, and foetal alcohol syndrome. The World Health Organization estimates that 2.5 million deaths per year worldwide are caused by alcohol related incidents, mostly due to heavy drinking. A strong co-relation exists between heavy alcohol consumption and crime. Also, heavy drinking can result in blackouts that leave people vulnerable to crimes such as rape. Apart from health issues, the economic drain and the disruption of societal peace due to increased crime can be quite a big strain on society. Heavy alcoholics (not mild healthy drinkers) are more often involved in domestic abuse than rest of the population. So instead of making something taboo we need to understand a drink or two a day is good for health, unless the woman consuming is pregnant, or if someone is patient of a kidney or a liver disease. On the other hand heavy amounts, i.e. more than three to five drinks a day, depending on the size of person, not just causes health issues but it wrecks families. The solution is in moderation for those who like to drink and not in professing abstinence. Apart from lack of information on alcohol for people to make their own informed choice, adulteration of alcohol and lack of evidence-based regulation policy are reasons for grave alcohol related health problems. Alcohol poisoning is due to non-ethanol alcohols such as methanol, also known
as wood alcohol, which is highly toxic. Methanol can cause blindness and even death. It is sometimes added into illicit alcoholic beverages to increase their potency. In fact, most hooch-related tragedies, like the recent one in Gujarat, have happened in dry states or on dry days in other states, which isn’t surprising. When one cannot get regulated good quality alcohol and it is taboo to consume it, people turn to cheap spurious liquor. Failure of prohibition in Gujarat, Mizoram and earlier in Andhra Pradesh should be an eyeopener. This converse effect of prohibition is a global trend and the disasters during the American prohibition era and that from the Zia time onwards should act as a stern reminder for anyone professing prohibition. We also need well-trained physicians and health professionals to spread awareness about the dangers of binge drinking and support addicts wanting to be free of the curse. What is needed of people is to be informed of both the beneficial and harmful effects of alcohol. They must also slough off taboos that do not serve any good and understand that addiction is a disease that can be cured in most cases; the sooner one realises this, the outcomes can turn better. The government should have a smart regulation of alcohol that will add to revenue, ensure quality of alcohol, and spread information on the ills of alcoholism without branding it a forbidden fruit.

The gospel according to St Chris
C
hristopher Hitchens at his razor-sharp best, was a juggernaut, slicing through a lifetime. And in his passing, Hitch has left a legacy that will sit in the corner of a room like a brooding elephant, casting a questioning eye over the course of history. His loss has left a void that may never be filled again. His vigour and supreme intelligence will see him forever ensconced in the pantheon alongside Wilde, Shaw, and Swift. And while he would baulk at such company, he will smile at the knowledge that he will be remembered for the man he was, rather than the man society wanted him to be. Lynn Barber’s “greatest conversationalist of our age” may have lost his battle to oesophageal cancer, but his fight will live on in those of us who shared his chagrin and revelled in his nihilism.
Lesson from Down Under
T
here was a time when Australia dominated international cricket in every form of the game. The Aussie world cup treble stands testimony to their past prowess. However, Australia’s form and reputation have slumped like never before. With none to take the place of greats such as Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden, Australia has become just the ghost of the behemoth that it once was. India may also face a similar situation. The core of the Indian batting line-up continues to be veterans like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman for the past 10 years. It’s time young guns are given enough exposure so that India don’t go the Aussie way.

ave you ever gone on a wild goose chase? No, I am not talking of chasing a man for the upcoming New Year’s Eve bash. I mean, really chasing something while believing it to be something else? I had that experience one time when I decided to move from Bengaluru to Chennai. I was sold on a small little boutique agency run by a deceptively hip husband-wife couple who called themselves ‘reputation managers’. When I joined the little outfit in a rundown-apartment-office in RA Puram on my first day there, I was ready to flee — even at the risk of losing the doubled salary. Frankly, I was stumped. Here I had nurtured my grand vision of learning everything there was to learn about managing reputation, and moving out of a deadly paralysing corporate communication job into something new and contemporary. But all I had ended up doing was writing emails on an age-old desktop, watching a bunch of foolish young people pitching for media stories, and dealing with verbal abuse from the CEO! The wild goose, after all, wasn’t so wild. It was a PR agency in Reputation Management’s clothing, where the CEO didn’t quite care to manage his own reputation. What a traumatic experience to eat such humble pie! – tripled by leaving behind idyllic Bengaluru after a decade, and landing in gritty Chennai to realise that life is not a beach. Whether you like it or not, at some point in your life, you will be drawn to the ‘greener grass’ on the other side. You will imagine you are destined for a ‘different’ profession where you will shine like a beacon if only you could get a chance. Some not-so-well-wishers will encourage you to turn your Class V hobby into a money-churning machine (when they

Mobile porn cause for worry
Your paper has correctly highlighted the nightmare of every parent as the admissions for the new academic year. The authorities are turning a blind eye to violation of rules by school managements using legal loopholes. Most of the schools are owned by relatives or business partners of political leaders or by religious trusts and the authorities do not want to invite trouble for themselves. It is sad that the hard-earned money of parents is being robbed openly and the people who are supposed to protect our interests. Arun Varma
Your story on “Mobile porn lures teens” was a rude shock to me as our generation is at a disadvantage when it comes to monitoring our teenage children who are very good with technology. The youngsters’ minds can be easily influenced by exposure to pornographic material and may lead them to criminal activities like eve teasing and sexual harassment. Families and the authorities should share equal responsibility to ensure our youth don’t end up as antisocial elements.

TALK BACK Unreasonable demand The article on Governor’s visit to temples causing inconvenience to public (16-122011) shows little regard for the highest official of the state. Just because he is Governor, doesn’t he have right to pray to his favourite God? Should the security for his life (remember he was also a top police official who might have several enemies) just because public has inconvenience? As a young paper, Postnoon should be more careful in its approach to such delicate issues which cannot be dealt with in such one-sided manner. K Ramesh Krishna
are actually secretly tickled about your lack of genius). Words of empirical caution here: There is nothing known as ‘greener grass’. There is no reputation to manage without PR. And, there is no point chasing anything or anyone that you do not have an aptitude for in this life. Sometimes, going with the tested could be slow and tiring... but it could open new doors. Remember the tortoise, though. Don’t take a nap along the way. Keep moving.
Heritage column It is great to know that a city publication is taking notice of the pathetic condition of our heritage structures and highlighting it through the “Heritage Watch” column. Every day lakhs of Hyderabadis pass them without bothering to do anything about the structures that is part of the city’s identity. The reporter has got the facts right and has managed to give a well balanced opinion that provokes one’s thought. Job well done Postnoon Gopinath Agarlwal
Excellent choice of writers This is with reference to the article in Postnoon “dazed and confused in pursuit of our dreams” and other articles by the same writer. It’s good to read Arpita Bhawal's articles as they are refreshing, practical and simple. She brings everyday situations to us, most of which we don't stop to think about. The 'dazed and confused...' is a particularly interesting read. Wish we could actually be a little more original and live life on our own terms. Hope she keeps writing for your paper.

Exploring complexities
From ‘I do’ to ‘I want’ Being a celebrity means everything you do comes under the public eye. Be it marriage or divorce, the world gets to know of it soon enough. Now if a celebrity is worth a billion dollars then divorces don’t come cheap either. Today, we take a look at some of the most expensive divorces in history 1. Rupert and Anna Murdoch
R
UPERT MURDOCH is the CEO of the world’s second-largest media conglomerate. While his company News Corp churned out explosive headlines, his relationship, especially his second marriage too raised a brow. He divorced his first wife after 11 years of marriage and wed Anna Torv the very same year. He was married to her for 30 years till they decided to part ways. Anna Torv, worked for Murdoch as a reporter before the two tied the knot, and divorced him when she discovered he had been having an affair with a junior executive at Star TV, a News Corp subsidiary. Probably the most expensive settlement, ever, this divorce was worth a whopping $1.7 billion!

2. Michael and Juanita Jordan
ICHAEL JORDAN is a professional basket ball player for America, who later shifted careers and became an entrepreneur. After racking up records on the basketball court, Jordan awarded himself with another trophy which we assume, he is not too proud of. His 17-year-old marriage to Juanita Vanoy went bust despite all efforts to make it work. The couple parted ways amicably but Michael had to fish out $168 million, and as rumour has it, the compensation was only one-fourth of Michael’s financial value.
3. Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphey
N
EIL DIAMOND, the senior most song writers of Hollywood with a career spanning over five decades, was caught cheating on his wife of 26 years, Marcia Murphey. Loyalty, as we know it, was not one of his strongest virtues. Although there has never been an official declaration of the compensation amount, Diamond was quoted as saying in 1995: "She deserves half my fortune. I wish her all the happiness $150 million can bring."
4. Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren
F
ORMER WORLD No 1 golfer Tiger Woods, took a lot more strokes outside golf than inside! He has been alleged of having more than 18 affairs during his six year marriage to Elin, which naturally transitioned into a divorce. Although Woods came out in the open and accepted his misdemeanours and promised to behave and mend his ways, the wounds were too deep to be bandaged. His representatives tried keeping the matter hush-hush but failed miserably. To save whatever face he had left, Tiger ended up coughing $100 million for his string of infidelities.

7. Harrison Ford and Mellisa Mathison
A
S MUCH as Harrison Ford refused to part ways with his wife of 21 years, Mellisa Mathison, this couples divorce made headlines with Ford paying her $85 million.
A
merican writer Rita Mae Brown has rightly said, Divorce is the one human tragedy that reduces everything to cash. So could this be the reason why many couples are opting for pre-nuptial agreements? Let’s have a look
5. Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving
S
TEVEN SPIELBERG has been one of the best entertainers in Hollywood with a career spanning for over four decades. His first marriage with Amy Irving lasted only three years and drained him off by a whopping $100 million. It was the costliest divorce during that time.
6. Madonna and Guy Ritchie
M
ATERIAL GIRL Madonna has been in the news for her larger-than-life persona as a popstar and her ill-famed divorce was not something that could be hushed either. However, things came to such a pass that the two could not go any further. Unlike most divorces where the compensation is dished out by the men, this divorce saw a role reversal where Madonna compensated Guy Ritchie with approximately $92 million.

8. Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva
K
EVIN COSTNER who played Robin Hood once upon a time, could not do much to save his marriage. His 16 year marriage to college sweetheart Cindy Silva ended bitterly. This divorce lightened Kevin’s pocket by a whopping $80 million. He had fathered a baby with Bridget Rooney which was one of the reasons for the split.
9. James and Linda Cameron
J
AMES CAMERON has been married five times and his last divorce, with his fourth wife Linda Hamilton cost him 50 million. The reason for the divorce was his on-and off affair with Suzy Amis.
10. Heather Mills and Paul McCartney
J
AMES MCCARTNEY, one of the most famous and the richest musicians, song writer and composer of The Beatles, married for the second time to Heather Mills. The marriage lasted just four years. They

Digital map reveals secrets of Antarctica A
new digital map configured by British and Australian scientists has revealed astonishing new geological facts about Antarctica, not known till now. BEDMAP2 is a detailed digital map of the bedrock of Antactica and is a close-up of the continent minus ice. It has been configured out of more than 27 million pieces of data acquired by airplanes, satellites, ships and dog-drawn sleds. One important fact that the map shows is Antarctica's ice sheet sitting atop steep peaks and deep vales — this particular geological feature has been revealed for the first time.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2011
From the world of science & research
The map also reveals deep troughs within the interior of the continent, where the bedrock is far below sea level, and rugged mountain ranges peaking at 3,000 metres, as high as the European Alps, but hidden below a kilometre of ice. The Australian Antarctic Division and the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) played a key role in collecting some of this data through aerial radar surveys in 2008-09. Scientists at the British Antarctic Survey, who produced the map, say it provides critical information for understanding
how Antarctica might respond to climate change. "These improvements are central to more accurate predictions of how Antarctica will respond to climate change and what that means for future sea level," said Australian scientist Roland Warner Warner and his colleagues Jason Roberts, Tas van Ommen and Glenn Hyland, were part of the survey team based at Casey base in Antarctica, between 2008 and 2011, which used radar on a Basler DC3 aircraft to map bedrock topography around the Totten and Denman glaciers, the Aurora Subglacial Basin and Law Dome, in East Antarctica. Blood test might predict effect of antidepressants
L
oyola University Medical Centre researchers are reporting what could become the first reliable method to predict whether an antidepressant will work on a depressed patient. The method would involve a blood test for a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). A Loyola study found that among depressed patients who had higher than normal blood levels of VEGF, more than 85 per cent experienced partial or complete relief from depression after taking escitalopram (brand name Lexapro®). By comparison, fewer than 10 per cent of depressed patients who had low levels of VEGF responded to the drug. "This would be the first time we would have a predictor for how well a patient would respond to an antidepressant," said Angelos Halaris, MD, PhD, first author of the study. Halaris presented results during the 2011 annual meeting of the Society of Biological Psychiatry and the 4th Annual Illinois Brain, Behaviour and Immunity Meeting. About 60 per cent of depre-
ssed patients do not respond fully to the first prescribed medication. Consequently, doctors often must prescribe a different medication again and again before finding one that works. "It would greatly benefit our patients if we could predict ahead of time whether a given medication would be effective for a certain patient," Halaris said. The Loyola study involved 35 patients who took escitalopram for major depressive disorder. Escitalopram belongs to a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Other common SSRIs are Prozac®, Paxil® and Zoloft®. Scientists aren't certain why SSRIs work in some patients but not in others. One possible mechanism is that SSRIs help restore a chemical balance in the brain. Some scientists recently have proposed a second possible mechanism, called neuro-genesis — SSRIs help to regenerate brain cells in specific parts of the brain that have atrophied in depressed patients. The Loyola study supports the neuro-genesis theory.
Most adults drop exercise at college level R
egular exercise tends to steeply decline among youth as they move to university or college, according to a study by researchers at McMaster University. Researchers found a 24 per cent decrease in physical activity over the 12 years from adolescence to early adulthood. The steepest declines were among young men entering university or college. The research appears in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study, based on Statistics Canada's National Population Health Survey, followed 683 Canadian adolescents 12 to 15 years old, who were interviewed twice a year until they were 24 to 27 years of age. While the children were most active, the
research suggests that this advantage quickly disappears. "This is a critical period, as the changes in physical activity during the transition from late adolescence to early adulthood represents the most dramatic declines in physical activity across a person's life," said Matthew Kwan, the principal investigator for the study and a postdoctoral fellow of the Department of Family Medicine of the Michael G DeGroote School of Medicine. "In particular, the transition into postsecondary is a onetime period when individuals become much less
active." Risk estimates suggest 20 per cent of premature deaths could be prevented with regular physical activity. Yet, recent data show 85 per cent of Canadian adults are not
active enough to meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a week. Public health campaigns encourage Canadians to be more active but the McMaster researchers say little work has been done to prevent the decline in physical activity and they suggest this issue should be made a priority. For the study, physical activity was measured by estimating the amount of total energy used during leisure activities over a threemonth period during the transition from adolescence into adulthood, including the move to college or university.
Researchers found the rate of decline in physical activity was greater for men than for women, who showed a modest 1.7 per cent decrease in their overall activity levels; however, the women were less active in high school. "It may be that girls experience the greatest declines in physical activity earlier in their adolescence," said Kwan. For comparative purposes, the researchers also examined other health-risk behaviours of smoking and binge drinking. While both increased through adolescence, the researchers found the behaviours began to plateau or decrease in early adulthood; suggesting that individuals may be maturing out of these health-risk behaviours.

coming-of-age story about two young, hip and careeroriented individuals whose lives seem to change for the better initially but it doesn't take a lot of time for them to wake up and smell the coffee. Rohan Bhatia (Sunny Gill) is a brash, extremely cocky and overambitious 24-year-old MBA graduate who loves the idea of instant success and will go that extra mile to make his dream come true and he moves to Mumbai to pursue a career as a stockbroker. He then meets Neha (Simran Kaur Mundi), a described-by-the-book perfect girl, who Rohan only pursues as a challenge. It wouldn't be a masala Bollywood flick if it weren't for the twists in the tale. As events unfold, they fall in love until Neha catches him in the act losing his virginity to a nymphomaniac aunty (Achint Kaur). Don't be too fooled by the title of the film as the plot derails horribly and is nothing closer to what Jo Hum Chahein should have been all about, as perceived from the trailers. Pawan Gill as the director fails to grab the audiences’ attention and instead has them rolling their eyes at the predictable storyline. The dialogues are screeching cheesy with repeated tricks from the 'how-to-

The film however is tailor made for Sunny Gill as is his debut, and he does a decent job of annoying you with his incessant arrogance and cockiness. S
hruti Haasan is thrilled about spending time in Pollachi, a popular shooting location in Tamil Nadu, for her upcoming film Gabbar Singh. She's playing a village belle in the film and since it's the first time she has donned this avatar, the actress seems to be all the more excited. “Who would have thought a concrete creature such as myself would grow to love the rustic beauty of

The film unit is currently shooting in Pollachi, where a folk song was filmed on Shruti Haasan and Pawan Kalyan. Harish Shankar is directing the film and Ganesh is producing it.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
