In addition to the studies, a host of extracurricular activities are organized for the kids to learn, while having fun” said, Nitesh Viajy Vargiya, in-charge for the Hyderabad center. “In the mornings, over 40 students in the age group of 3 to 5 attend the classes, while nearly around 80 students take tutorial classes in evening. The students are also served snacks between the classes. Educational games are provided” he added.

TDP floor leader Singireddy Srinivasa Reddy, who also acknowledged the services of Karthika, said the plastic carry bag ban implementation was a great success. During her tenure women’s groups had got a lot of recognition. The new mayor too, should continue these things. He insisted that Karthika continued as to be a pro tem Mayor until a new incumbent assumed charge.

ears ago, an unexpected visitor knocked on Dwarakanath Reddy's door seeking help, as the urban world he ventured into did not understand the plight of a poor artisan. His story was just one of the many that Dwarakanath and Anitha did not hear about. But their determination to help the poor families, and revive the Kalamkari art took them all the way to Srikalahasthi, a small town in southern Andhra Pradesh from where the poor artisan had come. Today, DWARAKA as an institution has helped around 3000 rural individuals who practice the art of Kalamkari painting. Postnoon spoke to Anitha Reddy, the daughter of Dwarakanath Reddy and the managing trustee of Ramanarpanam (DRRT) under which the DWARAKA foundation was initiated . She tells us, "We as a family believed that more than just reviving an art, it is important to create an environment that is secure, to help the artisans gain confidence in their work. beliefs." Today, the core women of DWARAKA have registered at the DWARAKA Plus society to further the growth and development of the Kalamkari art and their products. DWARAKA Plus has now opened a store in Hyderabad. Anitha expresses her excitement and hope when she tells us: "It was but natural for me to come to Andhra Pradesh. I was born and brought up in Chitoor, so I have my roots here. My father has been my inspiration all through." Anitha is proud of the support she has received from those who share her vision — a country that respects traditional arts and where children are proud to belong to an artisan family.

hey are the people who selflessly risk their lives every night only because you can wake up to clean city streets the next morning. We are talking about the unsung heroes of the city — the hundreds of sweepers employed by the GHMC whose existence we disregard when we speed past them late in the night and don’t realize how much danger we expose them to. Ask them how they feel while doing their job and they unanimously agree that they are scared of the speeding vehicles that pass by, especially when the vehicle is steered by a drunk driver. Earlier this year, two sweepers died while on job after they were hit by a speeding SUV near Vengal Rao Park in Banjara Hills. There are many more such cases that go unreported in the city. City police say that they have recently come across a gang of bikers who challenge each other to touch the broom or go over it without colliding with the sweeper.

The sweepers are merely given reflector jackets which are not enough to save their lives. In cold winter nights, the risk is doubled due to the fog that descends on the roads. Moreover, the sweepers have to face harassment from their contractors who give a hard time while paying as these workers are paid on a daily wage basis. “I am petrified especially when I am near the divider. Speeding vehicles can hurt us and the municipality hasn’t provided us with enough safety,” laments T Vishnu, 35, who sweeps the roads at Masab Tank along with three other women. “We don’t enjoy our job because it involves putting our lives in grave danger. The worst thing is that the drivers don’t have apathy towards us and treat us as if we are a hindrance on the road,” says Akki Laxmi, 40, a sweeper. PCC chief to have his own team U Srinivas

HYDERABAD: APCC Chief Botsa Satyanarayna is a busy man these days. He is in a buoyant mood after his return from New Delhi. Soon enough, Botsa tried to paint a rosy picture by asserting that everything is hunky dory between him and the chief minister. Now he is gearing up for a major overhaul in the party’s organisational structure by inducting new faces to key positions in a couple of days. On the other hand, speculation is rife that Botsa himself could be dropped from the Cabinet, as he is the APCC chief. With an eye on the future, he is preparing to appoint his own points-men to circumvent any trouble from any quarter. Botsa confirmed that soon he would be appointing new presidents for the District Congress Committees (DCCs). A new team to fight the upcoming by-elections and local body polls will be in place soon.

Tirupati MLA Chiranjeevi, who is sulking from time to time over his post, is trying to edge out some old guards of the party to accommodate his group in key positions. However, former APCC President D Srinivas, who made a comeback of sorts to the mainstream activity through the Legislative Council, is making efforts to do ‘justice’ to his loyalists. Besides the DCC presidents, major changes are likely in the APCC State body. Botsa is specially focussing on areas where the party leaders switched their loyalties to the YSR Congress party. Botsa is also under pressure to maintain the regional balance apart from taking local caste equations into account. Filling nominated posts will follow after this, but most of them have to secure the nod of the chief minister.

It’s all media creation?

The Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy had asked the collectors to come up with their success stories but so far nothing has been reported. Senior ministers Anam Ramnarayna Reddy and Botsa Satyanarayna have clarified that there were no differences between the ministers and the chief minister. Minister for Home Sabitha Indira Reddy said it was clarified that the chief minister and the home minster would review the law-and-order situation. It was a clear indication that the other ministers need not be present. But minister Shanker Rao came for the review and made a big issue on being sent away. Now the latest is that there are rumours on the differences between the PCC chief and the chief minister, the deputy CM and chief minister and some ministers and the chief minister. Minister for Finance Anam Ramnarayan Reddy told Postnoon that these differences are all media creations. Earlier, the media wrote about

development stories, success stories and review of agendas. But now side stories have become the main news, he stated. “The ministers can definitely express their views, but that should not be dubbed as if they are against the chief minister”, he clarified. In fact, Kiran Kumar Reddy has had a second meeting with police officers at the DGP office along with the home minister, chief secretary and the DGP. The chief minister insisted that the police must be there for the common man who should be able to approach them without any fear. PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayna clarified that he was in Delhi and it was the prerogative of the chief minister to appoint his ministers. This indicates that Botsa was in coordination with both the chief minister and the high command.

he state government pointed out to the collectors and SPs the dismal manner in which the Bonded Labour Act has been implemented in districts across AP. While most districts have not even furnished a report, districts like Karimnagar, Khammam, Krishna, Vijayanagaram and Rangareddy have submitted a nil report. The district magistrates have been empowered under section 11 and 12 of the Bonded Labour systems act 1976 to identify, release and rehabilitate bonded Labour and launch prosecutions against their employers. The government has reminded that the NHRC has taken a serious view on non-submission of the information on Bonded labour and also summoned the Chief Secretary in this regard. The district collectors must mention the action taken in their reports to the NHRC. Trafficking of girls, boys and women is the most heinous form of bonded/forced labour and the worst violation of human rights the government pointed out. All efforts need to be made for preventing trafficking by skill training and poverty amelioration efforts. Rescuing trafficked children from brothels and from the clutches of pimps, middlemen, and their rehabilitation is the need of the hour. It is necessary to ensure their reintegration into the mainstream of social development through education, psychological counselling and development of skills.

It is the shubhrakhs (rag-pickers employed by the GHMC), who after cleaning the roads, pile-up the garbage and set it ablaze. They do so as they don’t want to take the effort to dump garbage into the assigned area bin. Environmentalists are up in arms against the environmental hazards of such ‘incinerators’. A typical pile of garbage consists mostly of dried leaves, plastic bags, biodegradable waste and in rare instances, metal. The particulates emitted by burning trash, in

the long run, can be a source of lung cancer, says environmental engineer Sagar Dhara. “Dioxin and other chemicals are invisible, and their health effects are not immediate. The gases that are discharged include nitrogen oxide and sometimes sulphur. This can lead to asthma in children and bronchitis in adults,” he adds. Major Shiva Kiran, president, Sukuki Exnora, an NGO that deals with environmental issues, says that there is no machinery to lift the garbage from the ground and hence the easier method is to incinerate the garbage. “The shubhrakhs are so used to doing it now that even if we go stop them personally, they defy. This activity happens mostly in the morning.

The most dangerous part is the burning of plastic. As everybody knows, it spells doom,” he says. Environmentalist Indira Lingam of Jubilee Hills Exnora agrees, “Hyderabad’s air pollution is skyrocketing and these incinerators will make it worse. Children are the worst-affected.” The GHMC claims to be doing their best to avoid the burning of garbage. “We have assigned one of the shubhrakhs to be the bin supervisor and make sure that the garbage is disposed off in the right place. We have also specifically told the assistant medical officer to pass this message onto them,” asserts Samrat Ashok, Joint Commissioner for Health and Sanitation, GHMC.

Nancy J Powell, a career diplomat with wide experience in South Asia, has been named by US President Barack Obama as the next ambassador to India, the first woman to be nominated for the coveted post. 64-year-old Powell would replace Timothy J Roemer, who resigned from his post in April 2011 following a two-year stint as US envoy to India, after going through a confirmation process by the Senate. The Liberal Democrat leader called for calm and vowed to return Britain to the heart of Europe despite David Cameron’s decision last week to veto a treaty planned to rescue the Euro. Speaking at the end of one of the most politically fraught weeks for the coalition, he said it was “very significant” that the British government had agreed to co-operate with Europe by allowing Eurozone countries to use EU community institutions, such as the commission and European court of justice, to enforce its new fiscal agreement. The request was made by a defence lawyer for Private Bradley Manning, 23, as he appeared at a military court. He faces 22 charges of obtaining and distributing government secrets - which he allegedly leaked to anti-secrecy site Wikileaks. The Article 32 hearing will determine whether Pte Manning is to stand trial. During the hearing, which is expected to last around five days according to the defence team, prosecution and defence lawyers will each make their initial cases and are permitted to cross-examine witnesses. Friday’s session has adjourned and the hearing is due to resume on Saturday.

Proceeding to trial The hearing offers the first opportunity for Pte Manning’s defence team to present their case since he was arrested in Iraq in May 2010 and placed in military custody.It is taking place under tight security at an army base at Fort Meade, Maryland. IMPLE economic, age, gender and professional dimensions that define alcohol consumption patterns in small homogenous western nations are insufficient in a multi-layered society like India. Despite adoption of western lifestyles, middle class in urban India has yet to entirely do away with the old mores and values. For few in the big city, the old values are still the core of their identity, while for others they are suitable pretences, resulting in schizophrenic environment where youngsters grow up absorbing the worst of both the eastern and the western influences. Rural India is witnessing a different yet equally seismic shift, where the old joint-family value system and associated economic enterprises are collapsing and people are moving away from traditional professions. There is significant migration in search of livelihood due to ever shrinking size of the agricultural land holdings. Apart from the stress of displacement, a break from one’s communities also removes the social safety net that keeps check on alcohol abuse. In some previously semiarid and moderately populated regions, improvements in irrigation and industrialisation of agriculture has created excess wealth and removed the need for few previously agricultural people to work with their own hands. Instant money for these people and also for the land holders in areas near big cities where prices of real estate have skyrocketed has resulted in youngsters who do not know

how to handle their newfound wealth and are prone to addiction. Alcohol abuse combined with ready availability of opium-derived drugs seeping in from our western borders has resulted in a whole generation of addicts in Punjab, Jammu, Haryana and parts of Rajasthan. In the flux of values and economic relations of our multilayered society, four denominators can describe the major pillars of alcohol-related problems in India: 1) lack of information 2) adulteration of alcohol 3) inefficient alcohol regulation policies and 4) paucity of appropriate medical intervention. While the debate over the merits of alcohol consumption is hotly contested worldwide, views about alcohol consumption in India usually do not come in shades of gray but often in black and white. There is a taboo concerning alcohol consumption in any amount, especially by women and conservative sections of the society, but also in general due to religious teachings of the Vaishnav sect of Sanatan Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, and Arya Samaj and the remnants of antialcohol Gandhian drive. Actual practice of alcohol consumption is altogether a different matter, which covers the whole gamut from healthy consumption to fatal abuse. History has taught us that making something a taboo does not solve the problem: it only makes the forbidden fruit more tempting. Taboos encourage closeted and unsafe behaviour. In the case of alcohol it is binge drinking and in that of premarital relationships unsafe sex. Humans have been enjoying alcoholic beverages since prehistoric times. Alcohol has been celebrated in the Vedic hymns, Shaivism, Buddhism, Tantra, streams of Catholicism, and

many indigenous animist and tribal traditions that celebrate alcohol in moderation. In fact many anthropologists and biologists claim that it is likely that alcohol from fermented grains was used as food source much before the bread was invented. In fact, if consumed in moderate amounts over many years, alcohol can have numerous positive health consequences. Moderate amounts of alcohol have been co-related with reducing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, improving cardiac functioning, and reducing stroke incidences, type 2

I hope as India strives to maintain its much hyped growth rate, it also stops its infantile approach in dealing with alcoholism and many other health issues diabetes, osteoporosis, gallbladder diseases, arthritis, renal cell carcinoma, thyroid cancer, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma among many other diseases. When alcohol is consumed in an uncontrolled and excessive manner the story, however, is much different. Binge drinking, especially as a repeat pattern, is associated with many health problems including alcohol poisoning, liver sclero-

sis, cardiovascular diseases, sexual dysfunction, and foetal alcohol syndrome. The World Health Organization estimates that 2.5 million deaths per year worldwide are caused by alcohol related incidents, mostly due to heavy drinking. A strong co-relation exists between heavy alcohol consumption and crime. Also, heavy drinking can result in blackouts that leave people vulnerable to crimes such as rape. Apart from health issues, the economic drain and the disruption of societal peace due to increased crime can be quite a big strain on society. Heavy alcoholics (not mild healthy drinkers) are more often involved in domestic abuse than rest of the population. So instead of making something taboo we need to understand a drink or two a day is good for health, unless the woman consuming is pregnant, or if someone is patient of a kidney or a liver disease. On the other hand heavy amounts, i.e. more than three to five drinks a day, depending on the size of person, not just causes health issues but it wrecks families. The solution is in moderation for those who like to drink and not in professing abstinence. Apart from lack of information on alcohol for people to make their own informed choice, adulteration of alcohol and lack of evidence-based regulation policy are reasons for grave alcohol related health problems. Alcohol poisoning is due to non-ethanol alcohols such as methanol, also known

as wood alcohol, which is highly toxic. Methanol can cause blindness and even death. It is sometimes added into illicit alcoholic beverages to increase their potency. In fact, most hooch-related tragedies, like the recent one in Gujarat, have happened in dry states or on dry days in other states, which isn’t surprising. When one cannot get regulated good quality alcohol and it is taboo to consume it, people turn to cheap spurious liquor. Failure of prohibition in Gujarat, Mizoram and earlier in Andhra Pradesh should be an eyeopener. This converse effect of prohibition is a global trend and the disasters during the American prohibition era and that from the Zia time onwards should act as a stern reminder for anyone professing prohibition. We also need well-trained physicians and health professionals to spread awareness about the dangers of binge drinking and support addicts wanting to be free of the curse. What is needed of people is to be informed of both the beneficial and harmful effects of alcohol. They must also slough off taboos that do not serve any good and understand that addiction is a disease that can be cured in most cases; the sooner one realises this, the outcomes can turn better. The government should have a smart regulation of alcohol that will add to revenue, ensure quality of alcohol, and spread information on the ills of alcoholism without branding it a forbidden fruit.

hristopher Hitchens at his razor-sharp best, was a juggernaut, slicing through a lifetime. And in his passing, Hitch has left a legacy that will sit in the corner of a room like a brooding elephant, casting a questioning eye over the course of history. His loss has left a void that may never be filled again. His vigour and supreme intelligence will see him forever ensconced in the pantheon alongside Wilde, Shaw, and Swift. And while he would baulk at such company, he will smile at the knowledge that he will be remembered for the man he was, rather than the man society wanted him to be. Lynn Barber’s “greatest conversationalist of our age” may have lost his battle to oesophageal cancer, but his fight will live on in those of us who shared his chagrin and revelled in his nihilism.

ave you ever gone on a wild goose chase? No, I am not talking of chasing a man for the upcoming New Year’s Eve bash. I mean, really chasing something while believing it to be something else? I had that experience one time when I decided to move from Bengaluru to Chennai. I was sold on a small little boutique agency run by a deceptively hip husband-wife couple who called themselves ‘reputation managers’. When I joined the little outfit in a rundown-apartment-office in RA Puram on my first day there, I was ready to flee — even at the risk of losing the doubled salary. Frankly, I was stumped. Here I had nurtured my grand vision of learning everything there was to learn about managing reputation, and moving out of a deadly paralysing corporate communication job into something new and contemporary. But all I had ended up doing was writing emails on an age-old desktop, watching a bunch of foolish young people pitching for media stories, and dealing with verbal abuse from the CEO! The wild goose, after all, wasn’t so wild. It was a PR agency in Reputation Management’s clothing, where the CEO didn’t quite care to manage his own reputation. What a traumatic experience to eat such humble pie! – tripled by leaving behind idyllic Bengaluru after a decade, and landing in gritty Chennai to realise that life is not a beach. new digital map configured by British and Australian scientists has revealed astonishing new geological facts about Antarctica, not known till now. BEDMAP2 is a detailed digital map of the bedrock of Antactica and is a close-up of the continent minus ice. It has been configured out of more than 27 million pieces of data acquired by airplanes, satellites, ships and dog-drawn sleds. One important fact that the map shows is Antarctica's ice sheet sitting atop steep peaks and deep vales — this particular geological feature has been revealed for the first time.

Blood test might predict effect of antidepressants

oyola University Medical Centre researchers are reporting what could become the first reliable method to predict whether an antidepressant will work on a depressed patient. The method would involve a blood test for a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). A Loyola study found that among depressed patients who had higher than normal blood levels of VEGF, more than 85 per cent experienced partial or complete relief from depression after taking escitalopram (brand name Lexapro®). By comparison, fewer than 10 per cent of depressed patients who had low levels of VEGF responded to the drug. "This would be the first time we would have a predictor for how well a patient would respond to an antidepressant," said Angelos Halaris, MD, PhD, first author of the study. One possible mechanism is that SSRIs help restore a chemical balance in the brain. egular exercise tends to steeply decline among youth as they move to university or college, according to a study by researchers at McMaster University. Researchers found a 24 per cent decrease in physical activity over the 12 years from adolescence to early adulthood. The steepest declines were among young men entering university or college. The research appears in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study, based on Statistics Canada's National Population Health Survey, followed 683 Canadian adolescents 12 to 15 years old, who were interviewed twice a year until they were 24 to 27 years of age. While the children were most active, the

research suggests that this advantage quickly disappears. "This is a critical period, as the changes in physical activity during the transition from late adolescence to early adulthood represents the most dramatic declines in physical activity across a person's life," said Matthew Kwan, the principal investigator for the study and a postdoctoral fellow of the Department of Family Medicine of the Michael G DeGroote School of Medicine. "In particular, the transition into postsecondary is a onetime period when individuals become much less

active." Risk estimates suggest 20 per cent of premature deaths could be prevented with regular physical activity. Yet, recent data show 85 per cent of Canadian adults are not

active enough to meet the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a week. Public health campaigns encourage Canadians to be more active but the McMaster researchers say little work has been done to prevent the decline in physical activity and they suggest this issue should be made a priority. For the study, physical activity was measured by estimating the amount of total energy used during leisure activities over a threemonth period during the transition from adolescence into adulthood, including the move to college or university.

Researchers found the rate of decline in physical activity was greater for men than for women, who showed a modest 1.7 per cent decrease in their overall activity levels; however, the women were less active in high school. "It may be that girls experience the greatest declines in physical activity earlier in their adolescence," said Kwan. For comparative purposes, the researchers also examined other health-risk behaviours of smoking and binge drinking. While both increased through adolescence, the researchers found the behaviours began to plateau or decrease in early adulthood; suggesting that individuals may be maturing out of these health-risk behaviours.

Rohan Bhatia (Sunny Gill) is a brash, extremely cocky and overambitious 24-year-old MBA graduate who loves the idea of instant success and will go that extra mile to make his dream come true and he moves to Mumbai to pursue a career as a stockbroker. He then meets Neha (Simran Kaur Mundi), a described-by-the-book perfect girl, who Rohan only pursues as a challenge. It wouldn't be a masala Bollywood flick if it weren't for the twists in the tale. As events unfold, they fall in love until Neha catches him in the act losing his virginity to a nymphomaniac aunty (Achint Kaur). Don't be too fooled by the title of the film as the plot derails horribly and is nothing closer to what Jo Hum Chahein should have been all about, as perceived from the trailers. Pawan Gill as the director fails to grab the audiences’ attention and instead has them rolling their eyes at the predictable storyline. The film however is tailor made for Sunny Gill as is his debut, and he does a decent job of annoying you with his incessant arrogance and cockiness. But, the young actor needs to be polished a bit, and has a promising career if he plays his cards well. Simran Kaur tries really hard as the girl-next-door, but lacks emotion and grace. Achint Kaur plays the sleazy, rich investor while Alyy Khan fits his role as the conniving stock broker, perfectly. Jo Hum Chahein is everything else minus the entertainment.

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
