Arts and crafts under one roof PIC: N SHIVA KUMAR
Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: Creative arts and crafts from different states and cultures were brought under one roof in the name of The Society Collection. Fashion designers, artists and craftsmen from different segments like jewellery, handicrafts, pottery, paintings, linen, murals, ceramics and jute are showcasing their products not just for sale but to display their creativity skills. This is a nice opportunity for customers to deal with the artists and designers directly; without the involvement of middle man. Almost 95 per cent of the exhibitors are from different states and that gives it an Indian flavour, rather than just the Hyderabad style, revealed
Dominque, the event organiser. Popular fashion designers Manjunath of Fusion, Ashish of Toxic and national-award winning artist Tarmba, among others, are displaying their creations at the exhibition. Fashion accessories like hair clips, shoes, handbags designed by these artists are hand made by artisans. “I love this exhibition for its range and elegant collection. If I don’t buy things need now, I can’t by ever, unless I go to a designer boutique and do customised ordering,” said Anita, a customer at the exhibition on Saturday. The exhibition has 120 stalls and is on till December 20 at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre. The organisers are expecting 20,000 crème de la crème consumers.

Traffic cops lose face on Facebook D Sree Charan sreecharan@postnoon.com
T
he Facebook page launched by the City traffic police with great hype has got them some solid fan following but with brickbats flooding along with bouquets, the guardians of the roads are a worried lot. Of the 17,488 registered members, about two dozen followers have been a source of irritation and embarrassment for the cops with their ‘inputs’. They have been debating, discussing and often challenging every move and advice of the City traffic police. The comments which were initially friendly are hardly palatable to the men in
uniform anymore. “Taking cue from the recent accident where in a youngster was hit by a train while he was walking on the railway tracks with his mobile earphones plugged into the ears, we posted on our Facebook page asking public not to use earphones while driving. But one user commented saying ‘How did you guys know whether he died because a train hit him or that he committed suicide? And how is it even related to Hyderabad traffic police? Are you people planning to bring in a new law which bans listening to music?’” a senior police official said. The officer narrated another incident. “Another user, Srikanth Reddy, commented on our post on
carpooling saying ‘What do people get with carpooling in Hyderabad? Do you (traffic police) provide a speed lane for them like in the US?’ If we reply for such comments even positively, they start arguing with us. Some even take sides and continue the arguments.” “A few users keep a tab on our posts and post a negative comment on each of the posts. There are two to three instances where in we had to call them and ask them to mend their ways,” he added. Besides senior traffic police officials, the 10 lower ranking personnel too trained to respond to public inputs on the FB page are having a tough time dealing with these over enthusiastic users.

Participator y policing initiative boomerangs
A
nother positive move by the traffic police to get the public to participate in making the roads safer has boomeranged with the vigil turning more dangerous than the violation. Responding to the call of the traffic police, several Facebook page followers have been capturing traffic violations by everyone including traffic cops themselves. Though initially the police received it well, now they have realised that this is going to create trouble for the motorists themselves. About 30 to 40 photographs of various rule violators are being posted daily since August 4. Of them, at least four to five photographs are taken by the person sitting behind the wheels. The cops are now busy trying to convince their online

Last of US troops Cairo sheds more blood Nine dead after protesters clash with police and soldiers pull out of Iraq
CAIRO: Violence raged in the administrative heart of Egypt’s capital on Saturday as troops and police deployed in force after clashes with protesters against continued military rule left nine people dead. Smoke billowed over Tahrir Square, the iconic focus of the protest movement that overthrew veteran president Hosni Mubarak in February, after two nearby government offices caught fire, an AFP correspondent said. Demonstrators pelted security forces with rocks and petrol bombs as they fought running battles in the streets around the square and an adjacent bridge across the River Nile. Prime Minister Kamal alGanzuri raised tensions by accusing the protesters of being counter-revolutionaries and denying security forces had opened fire as they broke up a sit-in against his nomination last month outside the nearby cabinet office. Troops and police moved to retake control of the area around the office early on Saturday, erecting razor-wire barriers.

Nepal nun sings to sooth the needy KATHMANDU: Wrapped in a maroon robe, her head shaven, Ani Choying Dolma treads gingerly into a Kathmandu hotel, exuding the composure and serenity one might expect from a Buddhist nun. But this 40-year-old is no ordinary devotee, for Dolma — better known by her moniker ‘The Singing Nun’ For Iraqis, it brings a sense of sovereignty but fuels worries their country may slide once again into the kind of sectarian violence that killed thousands of people at its peak in 2006-2007 is the most unlikely of music stars, touring the world to change the lives of thousands of poverty-hit Nepali girls. She has recorded 12 albums, and for over a decade has been playing in concerts across Europe and the US. The money she makes through her soulful music, a contemporary take on traditional Tibetan sounds, goes almost entirely to projects promoting the education and welfare of Buddhist nuns. Yet Dolma’s story has a dark heart — a childhood marked by brutality that she believes would have left her consumed with hatred if not for a teacher’s intervention. Born into a family of Tibetans who
fled the Chinese occupation and raised in the shadow of a Buddhist monastery in Kathmandu, Dolma describes being beaten daily by her father and says her youth was ‘physically and emotionally painful’. But ‘the rebel in me took over’, she says, recalling how she opted to escape at the age of 13 to become a nun. She moved to a monastery in the hills overlooking Kathmandu where she found a teacher, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, an influential Buddhist master in Nepal. She may have been destined to sing for the pleasure of just a few fellow nuns and the tourists lucky enough to hear her at the monastery, were it not for a chance meeting with American new world musician Steve Tibbetts. Tibbetts was passing through Kathmandu when he heard Dolma chanting at the monastery, and proposed to record her songs. She was hesitant at first but consulted her teacher, who urged her to take up the opportunity. Her career took off immediately with a tour of the US in 1998. Once she started to receive offers and the sales of her albums grew, she began to use her fame to help destitute girls in Nepal. AFP
US soldiers pulled out of Iraq on Sunday, ending their withdrawal after nearly nine years of war and military intervention that cost almost 4,500 American and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives. The war launched in March 2003 with missiles striking Baghdad to oust dictator Saddam Hussein is leaving behind a fragile democracy still facing insurgents, sectarian tensions and a struggle to define its place in the Arab region. The final column of around 100 mostly US military MRAP armored vehicles carrying 500 US troops trundled across the southern Iraq desert through the night along an empty highway to the Kuwaiti border. “It’s good to see this thing coming to a close. I was here when it started,” Staff Sgt. Christian Schultz said just before leaving Contingency Operating Base Adder, 300 km
south of Baghdad, for the border. “I saw a lot of good changes, a lot of progress, and a lot of bad things too.” For Iraqis, it brings a sense of sovereignty but fuels worries their country may slide once again into the kind of sectarian violence that killed thousands of people at its peak in 2006-2007. FLOODED! R
escuers are continuing the search for survivors after floods killed more than 400 people and left many others missing in the southern Philippines. Naval vessels are scouring the coast along the island of Mindanao while soldiers searched swollen rivers. Officials said many bodies remained unclaimed, suggesting entire families had been swept away. The flash floods were triggered by a tropical storm that coincided with high tides, trapping many in their homes. The major ports of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan were among the areas worst hit on Friday night. Almost 35,000 people were still sheltering in evacuation centres on Sunday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang told the Associated Press that at least 436 people were dead. She said that 215 had died in Cagayan de Oro and 144 in nearby Iligan. The rest died in several other southern and central provinces, she added. Many of the bodies were unclaimed after nearly 24 hours, she said, suggesting that entire families had perished. “The affected area is so wide and huge and I believe they have not really gone to all areas to do a search, she said.

Fear no supernova G
iven the incredible amounts of energy in a supernova explosion— as much as the sun creates during its entire lifetime — another erroneous doomsday theory is that such an explosion could happen in 2012 and harm life on Earth. However, given the vastness of space and the long times between supernovae, astronomers can say with certainty that there is no threatening star close enough to hurt Earth. Astronomers estimate that, on average, about one or two supernovae explode each century in our galaxy. But for Earth's ozone layer to experience damage from a supernova, the blast must occur less than 50 light-years away. All of the nearby stars capable of going supernova are much farther than this. Any planet with life on it
near a star that goes supernova would indeed experience problems. X- and gamma-ray radiation from the supernova could damage the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet light in the sun's rays. The less ozone there is, the more UV light reaches the surface. At some wavelengths, just a 10 per cent increase in ground-level UV can be lethal to some organisms, including phytoplankton near the ocean surface. Because these organisms form the basis of oxygen production on Earth and the marine food chain, any significant disruption to them could cascade into a planet-wide problem. Another explosive event, called a gamma-ray burst (GRB), is often associated with supernovae. When a massive star collapses on itself — or, less frequently, when two compact neutron stars collide
— the result is the birth of a black hole. As matter falls toward a nascent black hole, some of it becomes accelerated into a particle jet so powerful that it can drill its way completely through the star before the star's outermost layers even have begun to collapse. If one of the jets happens to be directed toward Earth, orbiting satellites detect a burst of highly energetic gamma rays somewhere in the sky. These bursts occur almost daily and are so powerful that they can be seen across billions of light-years. A gamma-ray burst could affect Earth in much the same way as a supernova — and at much greater distance — but only if its jet is directly pointed our way. Astronomers estimate that a gamma-ray burst could affect Earth from up to 10,000 light-years away with each separated by about 15 million
years, on average. So far, the closest burst on record, known as GRB 031203, was 1.3 billion light-years away. As with impacts, our planet likely has already experienced
Can science predict a hit song? M
ost people remember listening to the official UK top 40 singles chart and watching the countdown on Top of the Pops, but can science work out which songs are more likely to 'make it' in the chart? New research has looked at whether a song can be predicted to be a 'hit'. The paper, to be presented at an international workshop this week, argues that predicting the popularity of a song may well be feasible by using state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms. The research team, led by Dr Tijl de Bie, is based in the University of Bristol's Intelligent Systems Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering. The team looked at the official UK top 40 singles chart over the past 50 years. Their aim was to distinguish the most popular (peak position top five) songs from less popular singles (peak position 30 to 40). A website, ScoreAHit, about the research is available at http://scoreahit.com/ The researchers used musical features such as, tempo, time signature, song duration and loudness. They also computed more detailed summaries of the songs such as harmonic simplicity, how simple the chord sequence is, and non-harmonicity, how 'noisy' the song is. A 'hit potential equation' that scores a song according to its audio features was devised. The equation works by looking at all the UK hits for a certain
time and measuring their audio features. From this the researchers had a list of weights, telling them how important each of the 23 features was and allowing them to compute a score for a song. The team found they could classify a song into a 'hit' or 'not hit' based on its
score, with an accuracy rate of 60 per cent as to whether a song will make it to top five, or if it will never reach above position 30 on the UK top 40 singles chart. n Dr Tijl De Bie, Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence, said, "Musical tastes evolve, which means our 'hit
such events over its long history, but there's no reason to expect a gamma-ray burst in our galaxy to occur in the near future, much less in December 2012.
potential equation' needs to evolve as well. Indeed, we have found the hit potential of a song depends on the era. This may be due to the varying dominant music style, culture and environment." The study found some interesting trends, such as: n Before the eighties, the danceability of a song was not very relevant to its hit potential. From then on, danceable songs were more likely to become a hit. Also the average danceability of all songs on the charts suddenly increased in the late seventies. n In the eighties slower musical styles (tempo 70-89 beats per minute), such as ballads, were more likely to become a hit. n The prediction accuracy of the researchers' hit potential equation varies over time. It was particularly difficult to predict hits around 1980. The equation performed best in the first half of the nineties and from the year 2000. This suggests that the late seventies and early eighties were particularly creative and innovative periods of pop music. n Up until the early nineties, hits were typically harmonically simpler than other songs of the era. On the other hand, from the nineties onward hits more commonly have simpler, binary, rhythms such as 4/4 time. n On average all songs on the chart are becoming louder. Additionally, the hits are relatively louder than the songs that dangle at the bottom of the charts, reflected by a strong weight for the loudness feature. n The results of the study differ from previous research, which has so far not been shown to predict hit potential. A possibly important qualitative difference with previous studies is the use of the time-shifting perceptron to account for evolving musical taste.

Stoke win thanks to Crouch
P
eter Crouch earned Stoke a fourth successive win in the Barclays Premier League as they came from behind to triumph 2-1 against Wolves. The England striker scored the 99th league goal of his career as Stoke achieved their first top-flight win at Molineux for 44 years at the 15th attempt. Wolves went ahead through Stephen Hunt’s penalty but an own goal from Kevin Doyle brought the Potters level after the break before Crouch decided the outcome. Stoke defender Jonathan Woodgate was cautioned early on for bringing down Matt Jarvis in full flight, and he was again to blame after 16 minutes when the recalled Hunt put Wolves ahead from the penalty spot.
Woodgate could have few complaints after chopping down dangerman Jarvis inside the box, although he escaped a second yellow card. Hunt duly tucked away the spot kick. Tony Pulis had seen enough and, after only 19 minutes, replaced Woodgate with Jermaine Pennant, allowing Ryan Shotton to drop back to right-back. Stoke’s best chance of the first half fell to Matthew Etherington after Crouch dummied a centre from Shotton but he failed to make a full contact on his shot, which Wayne Hennessey collected. Jonathan Walters had a good chance to level after 51 minutes when he found himself unmarked at the far post but he poked his effort wide. ES
Sturridge tucked away Ashley Cole’s pass in the 59th minute. That looked to be that but two minutes from time Petr Cech fumbled a weak effort from Hugo Rodallega and
Gomez guided the ball into an empty net for his fourth goal in five games. Victor Moses stood out for Wigan with his pace and trickery, and he played a part in a move that ended with Gomez tumbling in the penalty area, although contact from Cole seemed minimal and referee Martin Atkinson waved away the early penalty claims. At the other end, Gary Caldwell blocked a dangerous cross from Sturridge while John Terry had Ali Al Habsi diving with a well-struck shot from 30 yards. Didier Drogba was a fraction away from the opener seven minutes before the break when he got his head to a lovely Raul Meireles cross but, under pres-
sure from Ronnie Stam, he could not keep his effort on target. The game was a bit more open after the break, and the deadlock was broken in the 57th minute with a simple goal as Cole was allowed to run into the Wigan half and pick out Sturridge with a pinpoint diagonal ball. The striker took the ball down with one touch before lashing it past Al Habsi. Wigan now had to commit more men forward and some poor defending presented them with a golden chance as a weak backpass let in Rodallega. Cech was out sharply to block but Branislav Ivanovic headed Franco Di Santo’s follow-up off the line. EVENING STANDARD
Swans hold Newcastle
M
ichel Vorm and the woodwork kept Newcastle at bay as Swansea picked up just their third away point of the Barclays Premier League season in a goalless draw. Demba Ba was denied a 12th goal of the season by both the woodwork and Swansea goalkeeper Vorm as Newcastle’s hopes of a first win in five Barclays Premier League games were dashed. The Senegal international fired against an upright after skipper Fabricio Coloccini had earlier hit the other post and then saw Vorm react brilliantly to turn away his 42nd-minute volley as the Magpies threatened to run riot before the break. Winger Jonas Gutierrez also went within a few inches of a superb opener. But on an afternoon when the two clubs paid tribute to former Newcastle and Wales midfielder Gary Speed, they could not mark the occasion with a victory in front of a crowd of 51,767. The Magpies have now taken just two points from the past 15 on offer, although a fixture list which handed them clashes with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea on consecutive weekends is a major factor in that.

Ward too hard for Froch
RONALDO SHUTS UP CRITICS WITH TREBLE AGAINST SEVILLA
Andre Ward lands a left jab on the face of Carl Froch of England during their WBA/WBC Super Middleweight Championship bout at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. AFP
ATLANTIC CITY: Unbeaten Andre Ward captured the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament on Saturday with a unanimous decision over Britain’s Carl Froch at the Boardwalk Hall arena. The 27-year-old American dominated the 12-round super middleweight fight from the outset and his victory caps a marathon two-year, round-
robin tournament designed to find the top 168-pound boxer. With the victory, Ward retained his WBA title and won the WBC super middleweight belt as he won on all three judges’ scorecards, 118-110, 115-113 and 115-113. “One of the strongest assets I have is my mind. I kept my composure, I kept things under control. And we pulled it off,” said
Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) said. “I hope I did a good job. But we can still get better, believe it or not.” Froch, 34, has never backed away from a challenge and he came to fight on Saturday but Ward proved to be too smart and too fast for the Nottingham boxer. UK boxing fans have been searching for a boxing hero ever since the retirement of champions Ricky Hatton and
Joe Calzaghe. Just last week, rising star Amir Khan lost his super-welterweight title to Lamont Peterson. Froch landed his best punches late in the fight, showing some spark beginning in the ninth round. He never came close to getting knocked out but was never a threat to take the fight by decision either. “I wanted to put my shots together, but he moves around, and slips and slides. He’s very good at that,” Froch said. “And that’s why it was a bad night for me.” It was Ward’s biggest fight since winning an Olympic gold medal for the USA in 2004. Ward hasn’t lost an amateur or pro fight since the age of 14. Their championship fight originally was scheduled for October 29 but it had to be postponed when Ward suffered a cut in a sparring session. AFP

SEHWAG, ZAHEER WILL BE CRUCIAL TO INDIA: CHAPPELL MELBOURNE: Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan’s form will be crucial to India’s success in the upcoming four-match Test series against Australia, said former Australia captain Ian Chappell. “Sehwag makes big scores quickly and Zaheer has the ability to claim five-wicket hauls, two major ingredients when it comes to winning Test matches,” Chappell said. He added that the Indian opener’s duel with James Pattinson will shape the series. “Sehwag’s confrontation with Pattinson will not only be a highlight of the summer, it could well shape the series. Pattinson has a big advantage over most other opening bowlers who have been challenged by the belligerently brilliant Sehwag,” Chappell said.

Subbarao shows mercy for now A
t last, the God has answered the prayers. The moot question that lingered in the minds of the rich and the influential; the bourgeois and the staid was the enigma that surrounded Duvvuri Subbarao – will he or won’t he? The Elurian Duvvuri Subbarao indeed showed some mercy on his minions – the objects around whom money revolves – when he took up review of policy rates on Friday. Mahmud Ghaznavi invaded India for 17 times, but in 27 years. But Subbarao hiked policy rates only 13 times without break since March 2010. Some economists waited with bated breath if he would break the record of Ghaznavi. Economists and analysts remained cautiously optimistic on what the ever-smiling, yet hawkish, boss of the apex bank would unveil for the day. In fact, Subbarao showed the signs of going slow on the policy rates, through the very intervention to arrest the free fall of the worst-performing currency of the world, Indian rupee. Every time the RBI hiked the repo and reverse repo, newspapers and websites explained to their audience

what it was and what it meant to them. Those obtained housing loans and auto loans went on receiving letters from their bankers on how much of their loan tenor was extended or how much has the EMI gone up. The whole of Thursday, economists, bankers, journalists, businessmen, and commoners spent at least some time during the day on what Subbarao was up to. In March 2010 when he started raising the policy rates, the USD was Rs45.5869 (On March 25, 2010 precisely). And, it touched 54.26 on Thursday. Inflation eased to 9.11 per cent to in November from 9.76 in October. The food inflation too came down 4.35 per cent for the week ended Decembe 3 from 6.75 per cent the previous week. Spiralling dollar jeopardised many things, including petroleum products – the lifeline for the economic activity
Politicians, bureaucrats, journalists get the ‘kick’ T
he Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials in their midnight swoop on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday stumbled upon startling facts. Now, from senior ministers in the Kiran Kumar Reddy Cabinet to some aspirants for Cabinet berths, from some senior officials in the Excide department to an Excise constable are all jittery about when would their names be exposed? The diary in which the names of these powers-thatbe were mentioned was surely not a fallacy. The information consisted of a properly structured supply chain through which the ‘forbidden fruits’ are distributed. This department is the cash cow yielding nearly Rs. 10,000 crore to the State exchequer. Unaccounted money in the possession of Excise staff uncovered the ill-disguised corruption in the department. A vehicle search in Karimnagar district was the
seed crystal. On interrogation, Excise inspectors and constables, who were taken into custody, tumbled the skeletons out of the proverbial cup-
boards of the mantris, netas, babus and patrakars. Yes, in some case, even media men are kept in ‘good humour’. This emasculated the entire administration and the mantri-neta jugalbandi swung immediately into action and moved into damage control mode. To their utter chagrin, the trigger for the entire episode lies in the office of the Excise Commissioner Sameer Sharma. The guilty are of the strong view that he was responsible for the expose, for he did not get along well with the officials of the department over the age-old practice or malpractice in the department. The officials’ attempt to reason out with the Commissioner that straight line is not the shortcut in the department did not cut much ice with the hard nut bureaucrat. On the other hand, it led to a concurrent conquering of the conmen across the State.
of the country – which is the third largest import into India. Oil companies which almost hiked 65 paise a litre of petrol rescinded the decision on Friday to complement the gesture of Subbarao. The slither of rupee nudged the RBI not to relax its fist. Yet, the RBI Governor loosened the noose that held its stranglehold so far firmly around the neck of the common man in the country. A cut in the cash reserve ratio (CRR), the proportion of total deposits that banks must keep with the RBI, may ensure the availability of money for the banks to lend. Presently the CRR stands at 6 per cent. But the Governor indicated slashing of the repo and reverse repo, though no timelines are given, kindling hope among all. A 50 basis points hike in repo and reverse repo will result in rise of PLR or banks casting a heavy load on the cash-strapped common man. With a litre of petrol costing more than Rs73, and the cascading rise in prices of everything; there is hardly any difference between a Rs40,000 some six years ago and Rs1 lakh today in terms of monthly salary.

‘rythu poru bata’ just to a prove a point that his support base hasn’t eroded, if not remained intact. While Naidu launched a broadside against his erstwhile point man KCR, the latter, who is known for his acerbic retort, fell silent. Exactly, a couple of years ago, it was KCR all over the country in December. The winter chills indeed did not pass through the spines, instead all political formations demonstrated their hurry to placate KCR. The Congress is still unable to comprehend its own knee-jerk reaction. Two years on. Why is he prevaricating remains a moot question among the political circles. Even the Telangana Congress leaders, who went on fast, and those who held out a threat that they would do so, too remained silent. The talk of municipal elections has apparently sealed the mouths of the Congress flock, while the rank and file of the Telugu Desam drumming up confidence. What’s in store for whom politically in the next three months?

Where the carʼs the star
Turning on the Volvo charm
It screams Volvo with its no-fuss interiors and the curved tail lamps. But does the XC60 drive just as well? Osama Salman finds out
13
Cars that made Volvo famous
Volvo PV 36 Carioca (1935)
T
he PV36 was the first Volvo to offer an independent front suspension and became an instant hit. The PV36 was an updated version of classic Carioca was an expensive car. Volvo didn’t build more than 500 cars and the last one wasn’t sold until 1938.
V
olvo is the only vehicle manufacturing brand that has buses named after them in India. They are spacious, drive superbly and more importantly, are solid as rock. When it comes to their cars, Volvo is still the underdog in India with BMW, Audi and Mercedes overshadowing it. Now, from the Volvo stable comes the XC60, an SUV, which the company claims to be in direct competition with the Q5 and X1 but manages to stand alone and quite well. When a company representative told me that driving the XC60 does not feel like driving an SUV, I did not believe him, until of course I slid into the driver’s seat. The XC60 isn’t as bulky as its competitors, which is good for easy manoeuvrability on city roads in peak hour traffic. The exteriors are clean and the LED lights in between the front grill and headlamps add a touch of class. The headlights have preinstalled xenon bulbs, which move in the direction of the steering wheel. When you steer
the car to the right, the Active Bending Lights (ABL) too, move in that direction for better visibility. By the windshield, is a camera that is used for detecting pedestrians crossing and for automatic braking. There is another camera at the rear used for parking assistance. The back of the car is where the looks really come alive. The tail lamps are signature Volvo that come in a slant design. Now let’s move to the interiors. Considering the XC60 is an SUV, I was taken aback by the sheer lack of space. Having said that, there is a lot to offer here. The front console has the navigation screen and the phonelike buttons below it are used for making calls or sending text messages once the phone is connected via bluetooth. Beside the steering wheel, is a provision to place the rectangle car communicator aka the key to push-start the car, which is extremely responsive. The instrument cluster is basic and two screens show the various options of the car. The front seats come with Whiplash Protection System. This means
that in an event of a crash, the seats are made to cushion the spine while the six SRS air bags protect the rest of the body. The individual temperature control does not flow to the rear seats, but is compensated by a/c vents on the B-pillar for a more precise cooling, another feature signature to Volvo. The 575-litre boot space is enough for a lot of luggage.
Getting into the drive mode The All Wheel Drive is a pleasure. The steering and the handling is first class all the way, thanks to the continuously controlled chassis concept technology, where the driver can choose the individual suspension depending on the condition of the road. We turned it on to the advanced mode from classic and the suspension immediately became stiffer. This was most helpful on extreme pot-holed roads. Although the XC60 lacks paddle shifts, it is compensated with an automatic gearbox. Shift gear lever
to D and move it on the left and the sports mode is on. Move it up and down and it turns to manual gear box and you find yourself competing in a race! The car is light and makes a good drive. However, it is rough and you can feel it. With a power of a D5 twin-turbo diesel engine, and 205ps, the car’s acceleration is a meagre 8.3 seconds from 0100kmph. Driving it, I did not feel the turbo even though I revved it up. I liked the drive, but it lacked a punch.
Verdict The XC60 is a good car on city roads and although we did not test its off-road capabilities, a few features were great. The automatic brakes work well if speed is below 40kmph and if the car ahead stops for any reason to avoid a collision. The hill decent control works well even when the car goes in reverse.
Volvo 300 series (1976) The 300 series was considered heavy and unrewarding to drive but reliable and safe by the standards of its day. However, early 360 GLT versions were well regarded by more enthusiastic drivers, with the unusual gearbox location ensuring good weight distribution and unusually good balance and traction. The hatchbacks are celebrated to this day.
Volvo S80 (1998) The first generation of the S80 was notable for being one of the first Volvos to depart from the company’s traditionally boxy, conservative styling. The S80’s styling, with its pronounced belt lines and tail lights that narrow and go from curves to points as they go up, was later adopted throughout the Volvo line, especially on the S60 and S40 saloons. This was really the first ‘modern’ Volvo car.

Editorials When protectors turn on their wards
W
ill you trust a policeman? Anyone who goes by conventional wisdom would not. Last week, a minor girl was raped by a police constable. He and his colleague had found her in “suspicious circumstances” and questioned her. When the girl — who was repeatedly raped by another man the day before — did not answer, possibly due to trauma, they took her to an abandoned place and one of them raped her. If protectors turn predators, whom should those in need of help turn to? Dirty cops like these will only make policing harder and dent the already depleted trust of the people in police. Incidents like these will portray the whole force not as friends of society, but its enemy. The powers-thatbe in the police must now leave no stone unturned in changing the public’s perception of the force, and building a relationship of trust and respect, rather than fear and loathing.
WHY WE LOVE... Elizabeth Taylor
L
iz Taylor was so much more than just a star with violet eyes you could spend your life swimming in. She was the consummate artist: Able to go toe-to-toe with the greats (none more so than her twice ex-husband Richard Burton) in both talent and her ability to drink most men under the table. A four-day auction of her belongings, which ended last night in New York, fetched over $150 million, proving that though time may scrape away at memories, money can always get them back to their gleaming best. And in Liz’s case, they shone.
Construct toilets for dhobis Kudos to your team on the report Hung Out to Dry. It goes to show that despite all the progress we are making as an IT community, our basic ethos is intact. And to bring out the humane aspects of a profession we just take for granted made interesting reading. Hope that the people that matter will also read it and to something about the plight of these people. The administration must provide toilets to these people before going and educating villages on sanity. Practice what you preach. Naresh K Kumar

Hope floats… in the unlikeliest of places The moment a realist becomes an optimist is one to cherish Soul Curry Sumaa Tekur
M
y mother got a surprise phone call on Friday at the end of which she began to believe that the incredulous could, indeed, happen. The man on the other end of the line was the director of the silks festival she had visited the previous day. He announced that she won a mobile phone as a gift prize in the lucky draw for which she had entered her name. Her first reaction was incredulity followed by surprise and then sheer delight. It was like winning a lottery for `1 crore. For realists, lotteries are always won by other people, never by them. But this experience, I noticed, was turning her (a realist) into an optimist. Unable to contain her enthusiasm, she insisted we go collect the prize right then. And so we snaked our way through city traffic to the festival venue. We were welcomed like winners, seated, served tea and then – in a mini ceremony of sorts – handed the gift box wrapped in colourful gift paper. My mum and I were eager to see which cellphone was gifted to us, but we thought it would be too undignified to do that while seated there in front of all those officials. Once we gulped down the tea and said our goodbyes and thank-yous, we once again went to browse through the line of stores and the collections of silk sarees and fabric. It was as though we owed them another visit. This is better than winning a really big prize money in a fancy lottery, I thought. We’ve all read about Sushil Kumar, winner of the `5-crore prize money in Kaun Banega Crorepati. This computer operator and tutor from a tiny village in the interiors of Bihar is flooded with calls for financial help, even when he hadn’t received his prize money yet. to. And my mum is certainly going to use the cellphone. It was a surprise of the truest variety – totally unexpected and pleasant, too. Besides, the experience changed something in my mum. A realist all along, she has taught me the importance of staying grounded and acknowledging what’s possible, and not building false hope. On Friday, though, she was a changed person. When we did some more shopping at the festival and were headed out, I was stopped at the entrance to fill out a few more lucky draw coupons. I did that and dropped them in the box with a silent prayer. “One can’t get two times lucky, right?” I told my mum. Any other day, she would have scoffed and dismissed the very idea of a lucky draw. But today, all she said was, “You never know!”
Sehwag missing In your article Lessons from Down Under you have mentioned names of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman as the mainstay of our batting for the past 10 years. There is no mention of Virender Sehwag, and I, an avid reader of your newspaper, take very strong exception to this. How you can miss out the name of a cricketer of his calibre and track record beats all logic. In my opinion his contribution has been bigger, for he has won most matches for us in the mentioned period. Md Arshadulla
Remembering our artisans Anita Reddy’s take on artisans, ‘we help artisans gain confidence in their work’ in On a quest to resurrect a fading art is laudable. While we go gaga over a good piece of art, which we may have picked up to decorate our home or gift to a friend, we hardly ever bother with the source of it. I did not ever think that someone who created such magnificent pieces could be short on self-confidence. It sure has got me thinking and also wondering what the case is with many other arts. Please highlight some more.

Progress, but save the city From the hip Syed Shoaib
L
earn from history, one must. You don’t need a great memory too, when you talk of lessons to be picked from the near past. Five years ago, when the Metro was being discussed at our friendly neighbours, Bangalore, the route map revealed that it would, as should any public transport meant to ease congestion on city roads, crisscross the heart of the city. The network would not even spare critical and dwindling lung spaces. The pride of Bangalore, the MG Road Boulevard, was on the list. Caught as they were between the devil and the deep blue sea — impos-

sibly increasing traffic on the roads and the nightmare of having their beloved greenery diminished — Bangaloreans were up in arms against the powers that be. With a strong backing of the media, they pleaded that trees, landscapes and such others, for which the city had earned a name for itself, not be sacrificed at the altar of development. Try as much as they did to save the boulevard and whatever may have been the promises by the folks at the helm, MG Road will never be the same again. Nor will the many other roads and parks that had to face the brunt of progress. Not to mention the scores who lost their means of livelihood. But the biggest of losses for the city has been... losing the tag Garden City. While traders have a different reason to oppose such civic work, environmentalists’ concerns are different. The pros and cons of each view needs to be checked out before arriving at a conclusion. Needless to say, the effects of misjudgement on projects of this scale could have catastrophic repercussions. That Hyderabad needs a mass public transport system goes without saying, but to decide in haste on a system that is dogged with uncertainty, to say the least, defies logic. And to thrust it onto its citizens without their participation or debate is being autocratic and points to corruption. Hyderabad is known for its rich heritage. Like in the case of Bangalore, the city too, will lose its very identity, however justified the grounds may be. We should not litter the neighbourhood to keep our premises clean. There always is a middle path. We only need to look deep enough.
It’s time a new curtain rose over our theatre city
“H
aii-deraa-baad, the city of pearls!” exclaimed the voiceover as a city-based jeweller’s ad finished on the projector at a recent play in the city. I thought to myself, is that all? City of pearls? I think not. If an amateur theatre group can gather 700 people at Ravindra Bharathi then clearly we have a lot more going on here than just rolling out pearls. What we have currently, as I pen my thoughts, is about a 1,000 people assembling at Taramati Baradari for a play. All organised by a team aged 25 and below. What caused this wave of amateur theatre to take centrestage? Two words. Encouragement. Support. And some really understanding and trusting sponsors. How was a first-timer to fund his play and

rent a 1,200-seater without sponsors for two hours otherwise? What Hyderabad theatre requires today is financial support and infrastructure. Financial support does not only imply, what I call, ‘perishable sponsors’. A perishable sponsor is one who funds a single event, after which he cannot be retained, and the group needs to be in search of new sponsors, and face the uncertainty of not finding one either. What theatre groups in Hyderabad require is an independently-functioning
business model for themselves that gives a chance to small, amateur, and maybe even professional groups to survive and thrive in the current scenario, financially. Alongside this, we need wellequipped, efficient, and compact venues for plays. A venue run by an unbiased body of managers, a good sound system, basic backstage, reliable management, and of course economical to the point of economy and not luxury. Let’s try and eliminate the popular assumption of ‘a play with 10 hoardings must be a good one’, shall we? Some of the best plays I’ve seen have also been the most low-key affairs on a make-do stage with free entry! Stop comparing us to Bombay, Bangalore, or Delhi audiences. Different
cities, different lifestyles, very different people! Hyderabadi’s... we like our humour. We like our light, quick, double entendre, sometimes and the occasional witty one-liners. That said, once the comparison stops, is when the analysis begins. Theatre groups need to analyse how audiences responded to different genre’s of plays and how well they were able to reach their target audiences for that genre. Only then will you be able to get the right audiences to the right play, for the right impact. So if this means Hyderabad’s groups are filling in a 1,000-seater on a Saturday night for a play, I think it already is a viable option of entertainment! The writer runs a theatre-group

that readers love scandals and gossip and Victorians at that time did have an appetite for such news. In short, stories of adultery and rape and lesbianism could never die out. In this book, Emma recounts the Codrington divorce and what were the events that led to it. A chance meeting between two friends ‘reddens to life the grey ashes of a friendship’. Helen Codrington is the wayward wife of an ageing navy man and is looking for greener pastures (read toyboys), while Emily 'Fido' Faithful is a spinster who champions the cause of feminism. Emily and Helen share a love for Dickens and sometimes the bed as well. And while Emily distrusts her friend's behaviour she can't help but be drawn to support Helen's sexual trysts. Her plight can be understood when she laments early on in the book that ‘the Codrington marriage disintegrated on her watch... she did her best and her best did no good at all." Soon the affairs come to light and a very angry and cuckolded Henry Codrington applies for a divorce and the marriage is out there for the public to see. Helen too, decides to fight back and uses as her BOOK: The Sealed Letter Author: Emma Donoghue Publisher: Picader; 398 pages
No one defines marriage and deception better than Oscar Wilde, for he says, ”The one charm about marriage is that it makes a life of deception absolutely necessary for both parties.” Emma Donoghue plays the same card in The Sealed Letter, giving the readers a fantastically wicked treat weapon the ‘unspeakable night’ through which she insinuates that Fido was raped. Henry then brings up ‘the sealed letter’, which holds the key to Helen’s undoing. An ugly courtroom drama ensues and Emily abandons fort when called to testify for her bosom pal. Accusations of infidelity and lesbianism fly forth and poor Emily becomes a nervous wreck with fear of being found. But will she testify? Whom will she testify against? Who will the court favour? Read to know how the story ends. The author has researched on the divorce quite deeply as she manages to flesh out her flawed characters extremely well. As her previous offerings, The Sealed Letter too, plays up the psychological card. The writing does have an old Victorian feel to it in bits and places. Her language is simple and is enough to keep the reader engrossed till the final page. All in all, dangerous liaisons have always raked in the moolah and so does Emma.

The family skeletons It is obvious Maria McClann loves history. Her earlier book, As Meat Loves Salt was a historical book and now comes her latest, The Wilding, a periodical set in England during the 17th century Aishwarya Yerra feedback@postnoon.com
A
wilding is bastard tree, that springs up without planting and the fruit it has to offer is uncertain in taste. And the unspoken tale that the book narrates is of a ‘wilding’ in a family. What happens when a young man from a middle-class family, warmly cocooned with the love of his family stumbles upon a dirty and mysterious family secret that exposes him to the cold and harsh realities of life? It is the year 1672 and the narrator Jonathan Dymond is a cider maker who goes from town to town on a portable cider-press. By a twist of fate, young Jonathan gets dragged into a family secret that every elder has kept from him. A dying uncle's letter to his dad turns his life upside down. Revenge and inheritance are two words in the letter that worries Jonathan’s young mind. Jonathan now decides to get to the bottom of the matter and pays a visit to his uncle's widow and his aunt Harriet without his family's knowledge. Little did he know that End House in Tetton Green would
shake all his beliefs in his family. At his uncle's house, he befriends some queer characters, the wild servant-girl Tamar and her mother Joan, who is a beggar. Aunt Harriet is someone who is colder than a stone statue and she makes sure that her displeasure at his presence is made known to him. In the course of his stay there, Jonathan discovers that there is more to his aunt than what meets the eye. His only friends at his aunt's house suddenly find themselves homeless when aunt Harriet accuses Tamar of stealing. Jonathan plays the good samaritan and comes to the aid of the mother-daughter duo and Tamar gratified by his help willingly informs him of the dark secret that had been kept from him for so long. He comes to know that his aunt is indeed an evil incarnate and vows to get to the bottom of the murky business and do justice. The Wilding being a historical novel may not be a fast read unlike the fast-paced novels of today. But it has its own charm bolstered by the sharply etched characters who bring the book alive. McCann knows how to keep the reader’s attention by incorporating the chemistry between Tamar and Jonathan and her generous use of the supernatural. Writing in slow prose, she has found the perfect balance where historical writing does not seem like a yawn. The book sure does make an interesting read on a chilly winter night. hat’s interesting about Ritu Dalmia is that she did not receive any professional training to become a chef. Coming from a wellknown Marwari family, Ritu had the option of joining the family business, but instead she chose to be a chef. “I did initially join the family business but I realised food was my calling. My mother was always very supportive but my father was upset initially but then he too came around. One of the strongest reasons why I wanted to be a chef in the first place is to prove that you need not go to fancy catering colleges to understand the nuances of cooking,” she voices. With no degree to back her up in the hospitality industry, Ritu relies purely on instinct when she cooks. She set up Mezzaluna as a muse but it failed miserably. “I think Mezzaluna was a wonderful disaster. It failed but it still opened a career path for me.” After this, she moved to London, opened Vama as a challenge, came back to India after that and then set up
three restaurants — Diva, Café Diva and Latitude 28, which have been successful since their inception. Ritu had once said that if chefs are busy hosting TV shows and writing books, then they aren’t cooking enough. Does that hold true for her too? “Absolutely true,” she says going on to add, “And that’s why I only do 15 days of TV a year, even with many tempting offers. I also tend to take my own sweet time over the book. My prime profession is still running my restaurants,” she declares. Her latest book, Travelling Diva — Recipes from Around the World from Hachette India is out in the market, and it only proves that there is more that the master chef can dish out, even though her forte remains very much Italian. “My cooking style is simple. I personally love Italian food because I have been eating it since I was very young and I also love cooking it because the emphasis lies more on the qual-
ity than the technique,” she informs, speaking about her love for cooking. We then prod her a little about what she thinks are the five most important things in the kitchen that one needs to have. “I think it is quite important to have a great assistant by your side, a sharp knife, a fine chopping board, a set of good heavy pans and a clean working area. If you have quality inside the kitchen, you can churn out quality food as well,” she advices. So what’s next in the pipeline? “I cannot plan more than a week at a time but yes, we will be opening a baby diva soon called Piccola in Hauz Khas village. That’s where I started my restaurant business with Mezzaluna, so maybe that’s where I will have my last restaurant,” she says as we bid adieu.

tress and tension has become synonymous with our daily lives. Our days start with running for work amid the crowded and polluted roads instead of a healthy jog in nature’s lap. We work like there is no tomorrow and at the end of the day we seek the comfort of the bed. The lifestyle we live will eventually take a toll on our physical as well as mental being. A little bit of indulgence and pampering is something that can set things right. Spas and massages are a wonderful option for destress therapy. Let’s take a look

Cane furniture has always been dismissed as something that is cheap furniture, easily available and what people prefer for their patios or their lawns. However, times have changed and of late, cane furniture has created a niche market, competing against stylish Italian furniture. Read on
STICKING IT TO DESIGN Sana Mirza Sana.m@postnoon.com
I
f you thought only wood or marble could make your house interiors look good, then you were sadly mistaken or maybe less informed. Though normally a sidelined element in the past, cane furniture is now very much a part of home décor and the use of it is slowly on the rise. Simple in design, aesthetically pleasing, lightweight, and comfortable, cane furniture is cost effective and can be maintained easily as well. It has the ability to blend in with any indoor or outdoor décor. Cane was earlier associated only with furniture that comes cheap, but that perception is undergoing a rapid change. One of the major reasons for not investing in cane furniture is the lack of proper design in the Indian market. Fayaz, owner of a cane furniture store in Lakdi-ka-pul in Hyderabad feels that the usage of cane furniture at home is picking up at a fast pace. “Cane furniture was never neglected, just underrated. Initially people just started using it as outdoor furniture as it was more durable and could stand harsh weather,” he says adding, “A lot of people are purchasing cane furniture as opposed to Italian furniture, which is comparatively more expensive. From small seaters, dining sets, stools and centre-
pieces, you name it and we have everything.” You can find chairs starting at Rs20,000 while two seater sofas can go all the way up to Rs40,000. Cane furniture, a leading European manufacture of wicker furniture, has on display a stunning array of cane products for gardens and homes. Built in contemporary style with some unique designs, it has the ability to redefine the meaning of cane furniture in your lexicon. Talking about cane furniture, designer Kruti Kadakia says, “Cane gives the room a very cosy feel but also makes it stylish at the same time. It would be silly to compare Italian furniture to cane because they are both used in different
styles. While Italian furniture was previously associated with the more urban class, it is best used for offices and the living room devoted to entertaining only guests, while cane furniture can be used in rooms where you are relaxing.” Adds Kruti, “My favourite piece of cane furniture is the single seater cane swing; you can either have them hanging in the centre of a huge room or they are best placed in a spacious balcony.” Another new trend that has set in, albeit slowly, is that of cane getting blended with metal bases like aluminium or steel to produce durable and trendy furniture items. But one thing that is gaining steady popularity is the cane curtain which when used in rooms, keeps it cool and is a great way to minimise noise. With green campaigns dominating our choice of living today, there is a marked preference for the earthy look as majority of the population is gradually making a conscious effort to live in closer proximity to nature. But before you invest in cane furniture, make sure that the cane is of good quality in order to make it last longer. “Indonesia is the best market to tap into for cane furniture,” informs Fayaz. The traditional and ethnic face of cane is just what is needed to make a striking difference to your interior and exterior home decor!

Teaching pets to make pals Introducing a new dog to your pooch at home can be very strenuous, unless you know the proper way to get them to make friends. We give you some tips with a firm in Hyderabad tells us, “Since I am at home for most of the day, my husband and I brought home a Pomeranian - Troy. Two years later, when we settled comfortably in Hyderabad, we decided to bring home my friend’s two-year old Labrador, Latte, as they were migrating to another city. At first, Troy had a problem with Latte and kept barking, but Latte’s affable nature made it easy for them to adjust with each other.”

f you are planning to introduce another pet to your little pet family, you want to make sure that both the dogs are like Jai and Veeru, and do not behave like villains who cannot stand the sight of each other. Below we list a few of the important things to help your dogs make friends easily.

Never introduce two dogs to each other in your house. Your house is like a war zone in the beginning, and could trigger off fights that like television serials could run into seasons! To ensure that is not the case, take your dog for a walk in the park or to a friend’s house, where his new potential friend is waiting. B Venkateshwarlu, proprietor of Soldier Kennels, says, “It is a good idea to introduce two dogs as long as they are of the same breed. It is always advisable never to intro-
duce a male and a female of two different breeds as there is bound to be cross-breeding, which is not good for healthy dogs. Some dogs like labradors get along well with other breeds, but the ferocious ones like Rottweilers, Pitbulls, Dobermans and German Shepherds are the ones that act difficult. Gradually shorten the distances between them Never ever surprise your dog with another one
when he least expects it. It is just the case with us too right? When you suddenly find your friend introduce you to a stranger, it is not like there are sparks flying right that moment isn’t it? Take both the dogs for a walk with your friend walking the new dog behind you. Gradually shorten the distances between both of them and try and be a spectator as to what happens. Suparna Mohanty a parttime employee
Treat them for good behaviour Even if they do not seem to get along well, reward them anyway. The key is to make both feel relaxed and not confused over your preference for them, which is a natural instinct. Like they say, more the merrier. Before you know, your doggies could become great friends, and get along well. So next time you are back from office, you have not one, but two bushy tails wagging at you.
BLACKY
FUNNY BONE What dog loves to take bubble baths? A shampoodle! Why did the snowman call his dog Frost? Because frost bites! What kind of dog does a vampire prefer? Any kind of bloodhound! What do you call a happy Lassie? A jolly collie! What dogs are best for sending telegrams? Wire-haired terriers! JIMMY
DOG FACTS In 2003, Dr Roger Mugford invented the wagometer, a device that claims to interpret a dog’s exact mood by measuring the wag of its tail. n Puppies are sometimes rejected by their mother if they are born by cesarean and cleaned up before being given back to her. n The most dogs ever owned by one person were 5,000 Mastiffs owned by Kubla Khan. n
Everyone can help preserve the world’s amazing, irreplaceable endangered species. One should time and again educate oneself about the dangers facing them, volunteer at conservation organisations and write to local officials highlighting issues facing conservation of animals
