Science museum losing its sheen PICS: N SHIVA KUMAR

board proudly roars ‘BM Birla Science Museum’ as you enter Hyderabad’s only science centre. The multilevel museum that includes a participatory level is convincingly the best in the country. Yet, it is a state of utter neglect as tourists and locals are giving this fantastic museum a miss. This has made the management overlook the glaringly visible maintenance issues that need urgent rectification. Visiting the science museum is an enriching experience for children and adults alike. Over the years, it has acquired the status of being one of the finest science museums in the country. Off late though, it is losing its charm and there is a sharp decline in visitors. Upon enquiring at the ticket-

tioning ducts. While the exhibits are extremely interesting, quite a few of them are not operational. Even those equipments that are working are worn out and need a revamping. “We have been visiting the museum for over 10 years and as proudly as we say this is the best place for kids to learn science, the quality has gone down. Earlier, there were museum representatives who were always willing to demonstrate. Now they roam around occasionally merely glancing around. There is no enthusiasm probably because there aren’t as many visitors,” opined Mohan Reddy, one of the few visitors here. It is a neglected museum and can only be saved if there is a massive change, not just in the museum, but the mindset of the people living in the City. Save the museum, save science!

Once considered the best the country, the museum sees few visitors these days even as maintenance is neglected

ing counter if there were fewer people visiting the museum over the years, a representative said, “There has been a decline. Nobody is interested in visiting this museum anymore. Salarjung Museum is still a more preferred option.” Coming here and witnessing

the rush even during late evenings contradicts this. But the caretaker of the museum insisted that the people have gathered only to witness the virtual universe shown at the planetarium, which steals the sheen away from the other things on display at the museum.

The maintenance of the museum is clearly snubbed by the authorities. For starters, a few sections hardly had adequate lighting and resembled dungeons. Things only started to worsen from here. Once you enter the participatory section of the museum, you will notice a thick layer of dust on almost all the exhibits. The stuffy feel of the museum was primarily due to non-functioning air condi-

Lifetime tax to be hiked to 16% D Sree Charan sreecharan@postnoon.com

I

n a recent move, the Transport department is planning to hike the lifetime tax on vehicles to 16 per cent from 9 per cent for motorcycles and 12 per cent for four-wheelers as a deterrent to the indiscriminate purchase of cars and two-wheelers. So what really prompted the officials to opt for this move? Officials of the Transport department and the traffic police noticed that as many as 1,40,276 vehicles are registered with the Hyderabad RTA, while 1,66,231 vehicles were registered with RTA Ranga Reddy till September 30 this year, with an average of 898.87 vehicles being added every day. The vehicle density in Hyderabad has now nearly doubled and stood at 723 vehicles per kilometer! Even a minor accident leads to huge traffic snarls and takes nearly 20 minutes for the police to bring back the traffic flow to normalcy. The average speed of the City took a beating and is just over 13 km per hour during peak hours and 22 kms per hour during non peak hours. Once the metro rail work commences, the average speed may come down by three times at some of the important corridors. Hyderabad Delhi Area in Sq Kms 625 1,484 No of vehicles registered with RTA (lakh) 36.8 70 Average speed (km/hr) 13 – 15 (peak hours) 22 (non peak hours) 16 16 Traffic density per km 723 Road in kms 9500 13,260 No of traffic vehicles 294 740 No of traffic junctions 628 709 No of traffic signals 169 707 + 460 (blinkers) Traffic police strength 3066 6170

Statistics show that Hyderabad’s average speed stands last when compared with that of other metropolitan cities. Though the RTA officials to discourage the buying of multiple vehicles imposed 2 per cent life tax for a person registering second vehicle on him, it is not stopping Hyderabadis from buying multiple vehicles. “To evade the tax they are registering their second vehicle under their family members’ names. We even imposed green tax where in a motorist has to shell out `250 for a motorcycle and `500 for cars/jeeps per every year after it crosses 15 years of age. But they are happily paying the challan amount and are taking an extension,” said joint transport commissioner Pandu Rangarao. There are about 12 people who have more than seven vehicles in the city. Of late BMW — 5/7 series, Audi Q5, A5, A6, A8 and Mercedes Benz E class are getting registered in more numbers. People from film industry, businessmen, politicians and major corporate companies are buying such cars. As many as 2,27,090 motorcycles were registered till September 30 this year while 50,872 cars/jeeps were registered, besides 28,545 of vehicles including taxis,

T

If there is anything that would stop them from using their own vehicles is improving the public transport system and searching alternatives. Imposing heavier taxes is not just going to help as the income levels has gone up and people are willing to pay any amounts to go for a private vehicles. All we can hope is that the metros should come up big and the bus system should be revamped.

Blame not weather gods, it is Met Md Inkeshaf Ahmed Ahmed.m@postnoon.com

“I

t’s the Met department,” says a liaison officer of the RGI airport in Shamshabad, “that should address the travelling public’s woes, not us.” He was peeved at the suggestion that the airport authorities are literally taking air travellers for a ride, not providing proper weather information and warnings on logistic issues in advance. Christmas holidayers are a harassed lot this time not so much due to the soaring air fares as with the fog that delays scores of flights at the last minute. Bengaluru international airport is the worst affected and the chain reaction of delayed flights affects Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi,

Thiruvananthapuram and many other southern destinations. “This has been happening for the past one week,” says George Mathen, a senior executive at Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram, who is a frequent flier between Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Thiruvananthapuram. “The airlines send SMSes, sometimes too late to do anything, but that, again, is no solace to the one whose business is affected,” said George. Mercifully, flights are not cancelled, but that is all. Delays stretching to 1 to 2 hours upset onward journey and business deals. According to Syed Hyder, owner of Just Travels ticket booking Agency in Gandhinagar area near Majestic, Bangalore, agencies are facing the ire of the customers for the last

one week. “They do understand fog but they don’t understand why it can’t be predicted fairly in advance so that they could revise their trips,” he says. Hyder said most passengers undergo the trouble rather than cancelling tickets which involves heavy losses. Another travel agent Niyaz Ahmed of Travel Outlet, RT Nagar in Bengaluru too is getting knotted in agony for one week. Niyaz squarely blames the Meteorology department which he says issues “statement, not prediction.”

The South Indian and North Indian fog

D

r RV Subba Rao, assistant meteorologist, Indian Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad, says, “Misty fog is a normal phenomenon and not unusual in winter. Fog is formed when stable atmosphere becomes reactive and temperature gets absorbed at higher levels resulting in heating up of atmosphere. This will lead to development of inversion layers over the plates. This further leads to formation of misty fog. However, there is a difference in the nature of fog between North India and South India,” he reveals. “The fog which envelops “They (government of India) claims the country’s space technology is getting ready to land on the moon and Mars but they can’t help people with simple weather forecasts,” spat a travel agent of Fast Track travels in frustration. Many of the air travellers at Shamshabad airport told Postnoon today that the airport authorities and airline companies should develop a mechanism wherein inconvenience and

North India is known as radiation fog, whereas the fog which develops in South India is known as advection (horizontal flow of air) fog. South Indian fog is generally formed at dawn and lasts a few hours. It generally occurs from the third week of December to the last week of January,” he explains, adding, “As far as the mechanism to detect these fogs is concerned, we have a limit. With the radar technology we use in Hyderabad and the rest of South India, we are able to predict it only 2-3 hours in advance. But, I admit, if we strain we could forecast at 6-12 hours before.” delays caused to passengers should be prevented. According to these passengers these inconveniences include losses in terms of time and money. Many of them also strongly advocated that the authorities concerned, especially Met department, should use modern technology to forecast fog formation at least a day earlier and Indian pilots should be imparted specialised training to handle flights during such conditions like in the West.

I faced the same problem yesterday. Nobody thinks about the inconvenience caused. Airports should use modern technology to minimise delays.

Our pilots should also be trained to handle fog conditions. Technology here should be upgraded. Along with security, authorities should ensure passenger convenience.

I’ve faced this many times. Modern infrastructure is the only solution. This would ensure that passengers to know about delays or cancellations before hand.

The fog problem leads to disruption of flight schedules and delays. The agony and loss of business are not quantified, that’s why we take it lightly.

on’t go by the ambience, the food here matches that of a five-star hotel’s,” says Samir Khan between mouthfuls as he sits at one of the tables in Riyan. That is about the best description one can make of Riyan Hotel and Bakers. Tucked away in the middle of a predominantly residential area in Mallepally, its claim to fame is just one thing — tasty food. Nothing less, nothing more… or is there more. Yes, the pricing. It is unbelievably low. “We have come all the way from Toli Chowki,” he adds, glancing at his friend and goes on, “Because you don’t get this kind of food anywhere in Hyderabad, nor in Mumbai, which has a number of small joints serving good food. Eat the biryani here and you’ll know what I mean.”

Two other men at the adjacent table gorging on sheekh kebabs and rumali rotis pitch in, “I find food at several of the most hyped eateries in the city way below the standards and overpriced. The food here is so yummy that I find myself frequenting the place. Several friends are also regulars now.” His friend nods in agreement while munching on a chicken leg. “I once went to an expensive restaurant with a friend who was just back from the US. We were served food with a stale smell and this was so embarrassing, since I always projected my City positively,” said Abdul Quddus on his motivation to start the eatery, going on to add, “I decided that very moment to start a restaurant, and serve good food at good rates.” How does one manage to serve a meal of ghee rice, basmati at that, accompanied with three delicious curries for `20, I

wonder? “God has provided us all this food. I deliver that to my guests,” and narrates an incident when a group of elderly men after eating at his joint asked him what he was up to with that kind of pricing: ‘Don’t you want to earn some money from this business or do you only want to feed people?’ was their concern. “To serve my clients the same kind of food I eat has always been my principle,” adds Quddus. The simple economics of a big turnover changing a low margin into a good profit works here, if one should go by the crowd at the eatery. His brother Asad Khan says that they are able to sell food at that price because of careful purchase, good management and desire for minimum profits. “The fact that we do all the operations ourselves helps,” he said pointing to their bakery section where bread was being baked.

he local body election promises to be an interesting affair this time round. With YSR Congress jumping into the fray, Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam merging with the Congress and the rise of TRS in the Telangana region, the equation is bound to be very different. Political parties are now gearing up to show their strength in the upcoming elections. Political leaders are of the opinion that the local polls would indicate the trend for the future. For instance, in the Banswada bypolls YSRC had made a dent in the Congress vote bank. On the other hand, the government has decided to conduct the elections before the completion of the Budget Session. Minister for municipal administration Maheedhar Reddy said that they have already communicated this to district authorities. There are 134 municipalities and 16 municipal corporations in the State. Out of them, elections are

due in 99 municipalities and 13 municipal Corporations. TDP leader Erraballi Dayakar said that the government had been delaying elections for quite some time. It has to be seen if they would actually complete them by the end of the Budget session. “It is necessary that the government conduct

the elections to these local bodies before the expiry of the terms of the special officers,” he said. The government has issued draft notification for suggestions, objections from the public of municipalities. The Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) would fix the number of seats to be reserved for STs, SCs, BCs and women in every municipality and communicate the same to the government. The district authorities will determine the wards to be reserved to the said categories in their respective districts according to the powered delegated in GOMs No 38 of the municipal administration. BJP national secretary Lakshman said that the BJP would contest the local polls in a big way. The party is much stronger after taking up the Telangana issue, he opined. The municipalities and municipal corporations need to publish ward-wise electoral rolls relating to their urban local bodies as per the notification of the State Election Commission, by adopting the Assembly electoral rolls in toto.

ERITAGE WATCH

Jubilee Hall

I

n 1913, erstwhile ruler Mir Osman Ali Khan had a magnificent structure built that was a perfect blend of Indian and Persian architectural styles to house the princely state’s legislature. It remained a pride of Hyderabad and became an integral part of the face of the City. It’s located inside the Public Gardens, it is popularly known as Bagh-e-Aam. In 1937, the silver jubilee of coronation of the Nizam was held here, hence the name. A special gold-plated chair was made on this occasion with his crest inscribed. The chair is now at Purani Haveli. The royal paintings of original 1936 durbar, still adorn the walls of the building. The building and the pavilion in the internal courtyard are worth visiting. At the center, a small but high stage for the throne of Nizam was built in the shape of the Dastar

6

(Crown) of the Nizam. Exposed to vagaries of weather and little maintenance, it is almost ready to come down. The building housed the State legislature till it was moved to the

present building about three decades ago. So why doesn’t one hear about former legislature or even see its name mentioned in the website of the APTDC? The answer is simple. The building has been relegated to an

auditorium to hold official functions. Far removed from its erstwhile glory, the exteriors look dull and pale and cement has chipped off at several places. The building is maintained by the protocol department. Apart from painting no effort has been done to strengthen the structure. The SPs who came for a meeting with the chief minister the other day were seen praising the grandeur of the building. It is being used day in and day out, where thousands have food here every day. The culinary skills of the chefs here draw crowds from far and wide to relish the soup and biryani here. The lush green lawns and parking space for close to 1,000 vehicles make it a sought after destination. The breakfast by the Speaker and the Budget dinner by the finance minister are hosted here.

India unveiled

Jaya boots out buddy Sasikala CHENNAI: In a sweeping move, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa sacked from the AIADMK long-time confidant VK Sasikala and 13 others who were known to wield enormous clout in the party. A morning statement named Sasikala and 11 others. A later statement added two more names. Acting a week after she had first indicated that there were problems between her and Sasikala, the chief minister gave no reason for the ouster of the lot that included Sasikala’s husband M Natarajan. In a brief statement, the AIADMK chief, who took power in May, asked party members not to have any dealing with those booted out. Most of them were known to be related to Sasikala, who over the past two decades had emerged as a close companion of Jayalalithaa and was also seen by many as a parallel power centre. There was no reaction from Sasikala, who used to live with the chief minister and was frequently seen in her company both at private and public events. The others expelled from the AIADMK are V Baskaran, TTV Dinakaran, Diwakar, VN Sudhakaran, S

Venkatesh, M Ramachandran, Ravanan, Mohan, Kulothungan, Rajarajan, V Mahadevan and V Thangamani. Jayalalithaa gave no reasons why she was taking this step. But party sources said this could be due to widespread charges of interference by Sasikala and her associates in the running of the administration. It was a week ago that Jayalalithaa had indicated to some of her ministers that it would be good if they distanced themselves from Sasikala. It is rumoured that the Sasikala group was keen on bringing the AIADMK under their control fearing Jayalalithaa could be convicted in the disproportionate assets case now being heard in Bangalore. “Sasikala had emerged so powerful that few people could reach the chief minister without her (Sasikala’s) knowledge and permission,” said a senior government official. The sacking comes ahead of AIADMK’s executive and general council meetings slated for Dec 30 here. An AIADMK leader told IANS that Jayalalithaa had a strong hold on the party and there was no threat to her leader-

ship. As the news became known, party members gathered outside Jayalaltihaa’s residence and shouted slogans hailing the “revolutionary leaders” — as the CM is addressed by admirers. This is the second time Jayalalitihaa has ousted Sasikala from AIADMK.

Cabinet to discuss Lokpal today, Hazare rejects it as ‘worthless’

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet will meet today to approve the contentious Lokpal Bill even as civil society leader Anna Hazare described the proposed government bill as “worthless and good for nothing”. The Cabinet meeting, initially planned for Monday evening, will be held today morning, sources said. Law minister Salman Khurshid told reporters on Monday that the final draft of the Bill will be scrutinised by finance

minister Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Khurshid spoke to mediapersons after a team of key ministers, including home minister P Chidambaram, Khurshid and minister of state in the PMO V Narayanasamy held a meeting for two-and-half hours on the antigraft Bill, sources said. The ministers — all of them lawyers by training — scrutinised the bill for any loopholes, sources added.

The government may also be considering extension of the winter session of parliament for three more days to facilitate detailed discussion of the Lokpal bill and its passage, sources said. A final decision in this regard will be taken at the Cabinet meeting. If parliament is extended, then it will meet again from December 27-29 after breaking for the Christmas holidays on December 22. According to sources, the government Bill is likely to bring the prime minister under the ombudsman with riders. The Bill also will bring the prosecution wing of the CBI under the Lokpal purview, it is learnt. Parliamentary affairs minister PK Bansal has already informed the BJP about the government’s intention to extend the session. Meanwhile, Hazare told reporters in Pune that the government’s proposed bill was “worthless and good for nothing”. Hazare’s plan to visit Delhi Monday has been cancelled, his aide informed. Union Minister Farooq Abdullah said Parliament should adopt caution while framing the Lokpal Bill so that “a super government to the government is not formed”. IANS

She was expelled the first time after the AIADMK’s defeat in 1996. But the two later reconciled their differences. It was in 80s that Sasikala came into contact with Jayalalithaa, who was then the AIADMK propaganda secretary.

Missing nurse case: Rajasthan MLA arrested JODHPUR: Rajasthan Congress legislator Malkhan Singh Bishnoi was arrested by the CBI on Monday night in connection with the disappearance of nurse Bhanwari Devi, sources said. The legislator from Luni constituency had appeared before the CBI around 7.15pm and after quizzing him for two hours, the CBI decided to arrest him, the source said. The CBI have already arrested fromer minister and legislator Mahipal Maderna, who allegedly featured on a CD in a compromising position with the nurse. Bishnoi appeared before the CBI for questioning after the agency warned him of arrest for evading interrogation for nine days. The CBI on Saturday warned the family members of the lawmaker that if Bishnoi did not make himself available for interrogation, an application requesting an arrest warrant against him would be filed in a court here, sources added. The legislator is alleged to have been close to the nurse, who is missing since September 1 and is feared dead. PTI

Rent for fast venue stuns Team Anna MUMBAI: Team Anna on Monday got a shock over the high rentals demanded by the Maharashtra government for hiring out the MMRDA Grounds in central Mumbai for Anna Hazare’s agitation, an activist said. “The authorities are demanding a rent of Rs200,000 per day for one of the four grounds which we wanted to hire for Anna Hazare’s fast, if it is held in Mumbai,” Mayank Gandhi, a Team Anna core committee member, said. Gandhi said that they would write to CM Prithviraj Chavan and appeal to him to make the rental charges more reasonable. “If that is not possible, then we shall consider other options like the Kamgar Maidan, Parel, in south central Mumbai. We shall examine

that venue tomorrow where the rates are lower, between Rs25,000Rs40,000 per day,” he said. As per present indications, Team Anna wanted to hire the MMRDA Ground, centrally located in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, for at least five days. This would mean an expense of at least Rs10 lakh. Earlier, Team Anna had been refused the Azad Maidan ground on account of certain restrictions, while the Somaiya Grounds in Ghatkopar in the eastern suburbs is not available, while other venues are prohibitively expensive. Team Anna members have said that Hazare would shift the venue of his proposed hunger strike from New Delhi to Mumbai in view of the harsh winter in the capital. IANS

‘HIV needle threat a prank’ NEW DELHI: Key Team Anna member Manish Sisodia on Monday dismissed as a “myth” and “rumour” reports of a threat by an unknown “needle group” to prick Anna Hazare and his supporters with needles contaminated with the HIV virus. An anonymous letter was sent to Delhi Police on December 9 which said: “Around 50 volunteers in this group would use the needles on at least 1,000 people.”

AIDS Society of India (ASI), a professional body of doctors involved in HIV care informed that it is difficult to contract HIV through needles contaminated with the HIV virus, as the virus does not survive outside human body for long. “Virus dies as soon as blood dries. HIV contaminated blood supposedly used for pricks like the ones described, doesn’t pose any real risk of transmission,” the ASI statement clarified.

T housands of Czechs bade a personal farewell on Monday to their former president Václav Havel, who led the peaceful revolution that toppled the communist regime in 1989. The mourners waited patiently in a long line in front of the Prague Crossroads at the city’s old town, where the coffin containing Havel’s body went on display on Monday. Many were carrying flowers to honour Havel, who died on Sunday aged 75. The government announced that a three-day official mourning period will start on Wednesday and said that it will hold a state funeral, including a mass, on Friday at the country’s biggest church, St Vitus Cathedral. A private funeral for family members will follow at a crematorium, according to Dominik Duka, archbishop of Prague. Petr Necas, the prime minister, urged Czechs to observe a minute’s silence at noon on Friday and his government proposed a special law recognising Havel’s “contribution to freedom and democracy”. More than 10,000 shouldermounted missiles are still unaccounted for after the chaos that led to the toppling of Gaddafi in October. Egyptian authorities have already captured five groups of smugglers taking Libyan weapons toward the border with Israel, Sunday Express reported. The news comes as the defence ministry announced details of a vast military presence to protect the Games. It however denied this was a response to a “new threat alert”.

A defence ministry spokesman said: “This is still a police-led operation and we are providing no more in terms of security than what had been originally planned.” But a security consultant, who made a comprehensive risk assessment of the London site, said: “We are extremely aware of the issue of missing missiles from Libya.” Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said that security for the Games will include 13,500 soldiers who will be supported by armed plainclothes special forces and snipers.More important is the placing of HMS Ocean on the Thames at Greenwich. Cairo continues to burn as soldiers clash with protesters T

here was a fourth day of clashes in central Cairo today as Egypt’s military leaders struggled to contain a new challenge to its rule, which continues to be dogged by images of savage attacks on protesters. Egyptian health ministry officials announced that 12 people died and around 500 were injured in the latest round of clashes, which started on Friday when the military – previously seen as custodians of the January revolution – stormed into crowds of demonstrators, swinging clubs and sticks and firing live rounds. The violence today again took place near government institutions on the outskirts of Tahrir Square, where a monthold protest camp was cleared by troops on Friday. The Institute of Egypt was torched during Monday’s clashes and several nearby government buildings were stormed over the weekend. Protesters had been condemning the appointment of the new prime minister, Kamal el-Ganzouri, and calling for an end to military rule. The Supreme Command of the Armed Forces (Scaf), which took control after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, today defended the actions of its soldiers and said outrage was being whipped up by a hostile media and “saboteurs”. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood,

An Egyptian book restorer salvages burnt and damaged books at the Institute of Egypt in central Cairo after the world-famous centre caught fire during deadly clashes between security forces and protesters AFP which again performed strongly in a second round of elections over the weekend, has rebuked Scaf, claiming it incited the violence. The stance by the brotherhood, a rising power in Egypt, pitches it against an entrenched old guard of Mubarak-era generals, which is accused by critics of trying to consolidate its role rather than cede power through democratic process. The Brotherhood’s political bloc, the Freedom and Justice

The army can show all the videos they want, but their brutality was shown to the whole world over the last few days Ahmed Gala, a protestor party, says it has filed a complaint with Egypt’s prosecutor general accusing military leaders of murdering protesters. Scaf vehemently denied using excessive force. Major General Adel Emara said many of the demonstrators outside the government buildings on Friday were paid by a third party to

ignite violence and “topple Egypt”. “Using violence against rioters is a fake allegation circulated by the mass media,” he told a press conference. He said the military police were protecting government buildings housing the parliament and cabinet offices from infiltrators’ systematic assault. “There is a methodical and prepared plot to topple the state, but Egypt has not and will never fall.” Emara showed videos of protesters hurling fireballs and trying to storm government premises, as well as some detained rioters confessing to being paid to attack government buildings. Scaf’s vehement defence of its officers came as shocking images of a female protester being stripped of her outer clothes, beaten and jumped on by troops, continued to draw fierce condemnation. Another photograph showed police with clubs raised over a cowering and sobbing elderly woman and a younger girl. UN secretary general Ban Kimoon said he was alarmed by images of the latest violence. And in a joint statement today, more than 20 Egyptian human rights organisations denounced the violent crackdown, adding that it showed “the continuous oppressive policies” adopted by Mubarak’s regime.

US Prosecutors claim to have found email linking Manning to Assange

U

S army prosecutors claim to have found email correspondence between alleged WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning and Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblowing website. Manning is said to have expressed hope in an email to Assange that publishing a file of hundreds of thousands of classified reports on Iraq and Afghanistan would prove “one of the more significant documents of our time, removing the fog of war and revealing the true nature of 21st century asymmetrical warfare”. Prosecutors made the allegation on the fourth day of a hearing at Fort Meade, Maryland, on whether the suspect will face a court-martial for alleging leak-

Johnson said he had also found reference on a chat room “buddy list” to a contact using the alias Press Association – the name of a UK news agency. This, it was claimed, was an alias for Assange. As proceedings continued in public and private sessions, two supporters of Manning fell foul of the military authorities. Manning is charged with aiding the enemy and violating the Espionage Act. Aiding the enemy is said to be a capital offence, but the army prosecutors have said that they will not seek the death penalty. If convicted, Manning could be sentenced to life in prison. The hearing is due to end on Friday.

Mind reading machines on their way: IBM SAN FRANCISCO: Centuryold technology colossus IBM on Monday depicted a near future in which machines read minds and recognize whom they are dealing with. The ‘IBM 5 in 5’ predictions were based on societal trends and research which the New York State-based company expected to begin bearing fruit by the year 2017. “From Houdini to Skywalker to X-Men, mind reading has merely been wishful thinking for science fiction fans for decades, but their wish may soon come true,” IBM said in its annual assessment of innovations on the horizon. “IBM scientists are among those researching how to link your brain to your devices, such as a computer or a smartphone,” it continued. IBM gave the examples of ringing someone up just by thinking it, or willing a cursor to move on a computer screen. Biological makeup will become the key to personal identity, with retina scans of recognition of faces or voices used to confirm who people are rather than typing in passwords, the company forecast. “Imagine you will be able to walk up to an ATM machine to securely withdraw money by simply speaking your name or looking into a tiny sensor that can recognize the unique patterns in the retina of your eye,” IBM said. “Or by doing the same, you can check your account balance on your mobile phone or tablet,” it continued. Technology will also be able to produce electric power from any types of movement from walking or bicycle riding to water flowing through pipes of homes, IBM predicted. Mobile phones will narrow the digital divide between “haves and havenots” by making information easily accessible and junk email will be eliminated by smarter filtering and masterful targeting of ads people like, according to IBM.

On Friday, Santa’s sleigh pullers were battling it out to receive the ultimate winning prize – a trophy full of carrots. Punters at the course were given a chance to have a festive wager on the outcome as part of Williams Hill’s annual Winter Festival. Father Christmas, the official race starter, was helped by a team of elves who cheered on the side lines. After a near tense challenge, Dasha, wearing number one,

managed to edge past the competitors and was victorious, winning the trophy full carrots. They were presented to him by an official, lthough he won’t be able to enjoy them until Christmas day. It’s not Amge’s first Guinness record. Until today she was considered the world's shortest teenager, but in turning 18 qualified for the new title. A teary-eyed Amge, dressed in one of her finest saris, called the honour an ‘extra birthday present’ and said she felt grateful for being small, as it had brought her recognition. After receiving a plaque, she and her guests cut a birthday cake. Amge said: “I have put Nagpur on the world map. Now everyone will know where it is.” She dreams of one day becoming a Bollywood film star as well as pursuing a university degree after she finishes high

Guinness says in a statement that Amge has grown less than 1 centimetre (0.4 inch) in the last two years and will grow no more due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia. The title of shortest woman in history continues to be held by Pauline Musters, who lived in the Netherlands from 1876 to 1895 and stood 61 centimeters (24 inches) tall.

TITBITS

City gear up for Stoke clash LONDON: Every Premier League match Manchester City play for the next few months is sure to be billed as a test of the table-toppers’ title credentials and that will be the case when they face Stoke on Wednesday. Tony Pulis’s side, renowned for their physical approach, recently ended titlechasing Tottenham’s 11 match unbeaten league run. City too suffered a wobble, going down 2-1 to Chelsea, but bounced back last weekend with a 1-0 win over Arsenal in a high-class encounter. That suggested the team assembled so expensively by City manager Roberto Mancini and the club’s wealthy Abu Dhabi owners had the stomach, as well as the skill for a title fight. But their resolve is sure to be tested by Stoke, who provided Italian manager Mancini with his first opponents after he succeeded Mark Hughes at Eastlands two years ago. City won that match and also beat Stoke in last season’s FA Cup final. However, the Potters are now on a run of four straight league wins and a wary Mancini said: “It will be hard against Stoke. They are a strong team, who defend very well. It will not be an easy game.” Reigning champions Manchester United, currently two points behind City, will look to maintain the pressure on their local rivals when they travel to Fulham. United may have suffered a shock Champions League exit at the hands of unheralded Basel but back in the Premier League it has been business as usual for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men with subsequent wins over Wolves and QPR. “It was a disappointment (exiting the Champions League),” said Ferguson, in charge at Old Trafford for the past 25 years. “We have to do something about it and I think the players have done that.”

We need to recover soon because it will be hard against Stoke. They are a strong team, who defend very well. It will not be an easy game. We want to stay at the top for a long time. Man U get better, fitter MANCHESTER: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes the club’s injury problems are finally starting to clear up as he prepares to head to Fulham on Wednesday. The first half of United’s campaign has been dominated by Ferguson contending with one of the worst injury lists in his 25 years in charge at Old Trafford. His midfield has been hit badly, with Anderson ruled out for the season with a knee problem, Darren Fletcher being given indefinite leave as he looks to

overcome a chronic bowel condition and Tom Cleverley currently missing with an ankle injury. At the back, Nemanja Vidic has also been ruled out of the rest of the campaign with a knee problem, while Rafael will step up his return from a shoulder injury with a run out for the reserves. But Ferguson, who is also without Michael Owen, was buoyed by forwards Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov returning to his squad for the 2-0 victory at QPR last weekend. Ferguson has fended off suggestions he should look to add to his squad in January due to the high number of absentees and he thinks the worst of his problems are over. “The injuries are improving a bit,” Ferguson said. “It’s getting a little bit better. It’s good to have those two players (Berbatov and Hernandez) back, and Rafa’s training now, he maybe just needs a reserve game.” AFP

contention is “stupid”. “There are still five months to go and people would be stupid to assume we’re out of the title race,” he said after scoring in a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Wigan on Saturday. Chelsea captain John Terry is set to be fit for Wednesday’s match despite a training ground scare on Monday where the England centre back “pinched” his Achilles tendon. Spurs though will be without winger Aaron Lennon because of a hamstring injury suffered in last weekend’s 1-0 win over Sunderland. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has conceded the Gunners, away to Aston Villa on Wednesday, have all but abandoned hope of winning the title following a defeat by City that left them 12 points off the summit. “It will be difficult to close the gap on City now, but we will try,” said Wenger. “This was a game we couldn’t afford to lose.” Liverpool, fresh from a 2-0 win over Villa, will hope the hearing into allegations striker Luis Suarez racially abused Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in October, is settled by the time they kickoff away to relegation candidates Wigan on Wednesday. Newcastle, held to a goalless draw by Swansea last time out, will look to revive their bid for a top four spot at home to West Brom on Wednesday. “Our best team can compete with any team in this Premier League,” said Magpies boss Alan Pardew. “Whether we have got a strong enough squad to keep us consistently in the top seven all year, we will have to wait and see.”“In other Wednesday matches QPR are at home to Sunderland while Swansea, another promoted side, travel to Everton. ROONEY JOINS RACING SET

M

anchester United striker Wayne Rooney has become the latest English footballer to take up a direct involvement in racing by buying a horse set to go into training with Tom Dascombe. Dascombe’s yard in Cheshire, north-west England, has been backed financially by Rooney’s United team-mate and fellow England forward Michael Owen, whose Brown Panther was the stable’s star during this year’s English flat season, with the colt winning at Royal Ascot. “I can confirm that Wayne and Coleen (Rooney’s wife) have bought a horse,” a spokesman for Dascombe said Monday.

CRAIG BELLAMY BACKS SUAREZ IN RACISM ROW

L

iverpool’s Craig Bellamy has paid tribute to Luis Suarez as the Football Association (FA) prepares to deliver a verdict on the striker over alleged racist slurs. More than two months after Manchester United defender Patrice Evra made the allegations during a 1-1 draw at Anfield on October 15, the FA could publicise its decision before Liverpool’s game at Wigan on Wednesday, with Suarez facing a ban and a fine if found guilty of the charge. A verdict from a three-man disciplinary panel was expected last week but on Friday an FA statement said there wouldn’t be an announcement on a decision “before Tuesday (December 20) at the earliest”.

aniel Sturridge has warned Chelsea’s Premier League rivals that they will be stupid to rule them out of the title race. Chelsea suffered a huge blow to their hopes of winning the championship after conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Wigan on Saturday. It allowed leaders Manchester City to extend their advantage over them to nine points following their win over Arsenal. Chelsea have also dropped back to fourth in the League behind Tottenham, who they face in a huge fixture at White Hart Lane on Thursday night. However, Sturridge is adamant Chelsea can still finish on top this term despite their inconsistent performances. “There are still five months to go and people would be stupid to assume we’re out of the title race,” said the striker, who is Chelsea’s top scorer this season following his ninth goal of the season at the DW Stadium. C Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani expects to meet Manchester City officials on Thursday to discuss the possible transfer of Carlos Tevez. Striker Tevez is currently in his native Argentina having flown home without City’s permission last month. His representatives have been speaking to officials at Milan about a possible move, but a sticking point has been the terms of the deal, with the Italian giants wanting Tevez on loan initially. Galliani said, according to Italian Eurosport: “On Thursday we have an appointment with Manchester City for Tevez but it will probably not be the decisive one to conclude negotiations.”

Ed Cowan’s 109 helped CA Chairman XI to fight back against India on the second day of their warm-up match at Manuka Oval on Tuesday. The Aussies reached 214 at the loss of seven wickets. Indians were bundled out for 269 in the first innings which was rescued by Virat Kohli’s 132 and Rohit Sharma 47. The home team seemed not at all troubled by the visitors’ bowlers. side. India's pace spearhead and left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan's return to the Indian squad was not as good as expected. The left-arm paceman made an appearance with the team after lunch and bowled six overs on the trot conceding 29 runs but never looked like getting a wicket. He was pulled and driven quite easily by the second wicket pair of Cowan and Usman Khawaja (25) who put on 76 runs for the second wicket.

The home side lost David Warner (2), Khawaja (25) and Phil Hughes (20). Hughes' cheap dismissal, even though he got all his runs in boundaries, means he is unlikely to feature in the squad for the first Test starting in Melbourne on December 26. VILLA SURGERY SUCCESSFUL

B

arcelona striker David Villa had successful surgery on his broken left leg on Monday and doctors said it would take him four to five months to recover. Spain's all-time leading scorer has said he was targeting returning for a possible Champions League final on May 19, and being able to help his national team defend their European Championship title in Poland and Ukraine in June. "The surgery went fantastically well," Barca doctor Ricard Pruna told a news conference. "He has been sending messages to his colleagues and laughing with his wife. I have never seen someone in such good spirits after an operation."

Warne: Exploit India’s bowling

S

pin legend Shane Warne feels that bowling is India's weak link and Australia can exploit this to their advantage in the fourmatch Test series beginning in Melbourne on December 26. "England just beat them fournil. They have got some wonderful batting and all that sort of stuff but I think their bowling is a bit weak," Warne said. "And if Zaheer Khan or Ishant Sharma goes down with injury then it should be a good time for the Australian batters," he added. Ishant did not play in the

three-day warm-up match against a Cricket Australia Chairman's XI side that began in Canberra, on Monday, due to an ankle injury. The Australians have also been hit hard by injuries. PTI

Misbah helps Pakistan gain lead DHAKA: Misbah-ul-Haq hit

a half-century as Pakistan reached 386-5 in their first innings in reply to Bangladesh's 338 at lunch on the penultimate day of the second and final Test in Dhaka on Tuesday. The Pakistani skipper (70) hit 11 fours in his 14th Test half-century and added 66 runs for the fifth wicket with Asad Shafiq, who was unbeaten on 42 at the break with Adnan Akmal (seven not out). The tourists added 94 runs to their overnight total of 2923 for the loss of two wickets in the morning session. They now lead by 48 runs with five wickets in hand. Misbah played some

attractive shots in his 123-ball knock, driving paceman Nazmul Hossain through the covers and then straight for two successive fours early in the morning. He, however, was lucky to survive soon after

completing his half-century as Robiul Islam dropped an easy catch at mid-on off left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan. Misbah continued to play strokes, twice reverse-sweeping left-arm spinner Elias

Sunny for fours before he was caught by Mohammad Mahmudullah in the slips while attempting to sweep Shakib. Shafiq, who scored a century in the opening Test in Chittagong, began impressively, cutting and flicking fast bowler Shahadat Hossain for two boundaries in an over. Sunny got a wicket with his second delivery of the day when he had Younis Khan (49) caught by wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim after the batsman had added just one run to his overnight score of 48. Younis, who smashed an unbeaten double-century in the last Test, hit four boundaries in his 122-ball knock. AFP

ncapped fast bowler Kanishka Alvitigala and seamer Dhammika Prasad have flown out to South Africa to join Sri Lanka's struggling Test team, officials said Tuesday. Sri Lanka, who were crushed in the first Test by an innings and 81 runs, had requested replacements after pace bowler Nuwan Pradeep was injured during a warm-up game in Benoni. "Dhammika Prasad and Kanishka Alvitigala will be available for selection for the 2nd Test at Durban on 26th of December and for the final Test at Cape Town scheduled for 3rd January 2012," Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement. The governing body said both players flew out on Monday to join the team. Alvitigala has taken 51 first-class wickets.

ILL WILLIAMS PULLS OUT

S

even-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams has pulled out of an Australian Open warm-up tournament in New Zealand as she continues to battle a debilitating illness. Williams is suffering from Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease, and after playing a number of recent exhibition matches she announced Tuesday she was not ready to play in the Auckland Classic, which starts on January 2. "We are disappointed to have lost a player of her calibre," tournament director Richard Palmer said. "While withdrawals of this nature are part and parcel of sport, we sincerely feel for the fans who will also be disappointed by the news of Venus’s withdrawal."

Editorials EARS COMPLIMENT eyes on the road

N

ot too long ago we were unreachable when on the move. The output of a person then was not drastically less than today’s well-connected being, should one argue of increased productivity with improved connectivity. Even if the arguments are taken, any extra achievement is not worth it, should it come at the cost of risk to life, ask someone who has lost a dear one in an accident. The consequence of using a cellphone when operating a vehicle is inviting trouble. Hands-free attachments or whatever, we still have to dial — enough to do more than enough damage. Listening to music, too, should be avoided while driving/riding. The sense of sight alone won’t suffice when more than one life depends on one’s actions. The ears compliment the eyes on roads. We must not forget this.

WHY WE LOVE... Lionel Messi

H

e is humble; he is cute; and he is a genius. He floats about the ground and scores and makes others do it. Lionel Messi is a rarity; his purpose is clear; he does not brag: his feet do the talking. Before the Club World Cup final, many touted Santos’ Neymar to be as good as Messi. Even Neymar claimed he can best the best. But after the match, he understood where he stood. And Messi replied in his subtle, sublime way to the ravings that Neymar would best the best: he kicked them away along with the ball he netted in the final with his back-heel.

Welcome step on Wakf The government’s decision to protect Wakf land (State promises to protect Wakf land) is a timely one. There is no count for the number of encroachments that have taken place on government land as well as land owned by various trusts. It is the confidence that the government machinery will not act that encourages these encroachers. Considering the fact that there are more than 3,000 Wakf institutions in the state, the state should take immediate steps to survey these and protect them. Khaleel Malkajgiri

The tyrant is dead! Long live tyranny Where one tyrant once trod, another’s shadow slowly falls Urban jetsam Dean Williams

B

ritish Foreign Secretary William Hague opened his mouth so wide yesterday; his foot was jumping with unbridled glee at the opportunity to hibernate in his gaping maw. On hearing the news of North Korean tyrant, and all-round stand-up sociopath, Kim Jong-il’s death, Hague said: “This could be a turning point for North Korea.” Really? Has he seen Kim’s son, Jong-Un? You wouldn’t want him to babysit Damien from The Omen. But that’s just the thing about mentally unstable tyrants (are there any other kind?). They seem to want to stand out in a crowd, of course in their case the crowd’s on its knees, so they stand out anyway; even if they’re four-feet-nothing like Kim was. Try as you might, you’re never going to find one that looks like George Clooney. Take Muammar Gaddafi for instance. As a young man he was a strapping officer, all chin and trousers; cut forward a few decades and he looked like a more opulent version of Michael Jackson’s wax statue at Madame Tussauds... stuck on a candle. Even Idi Amin strutted about like he was about to take a few Air France passengers hostage. But Kim was something else altogether: the wannabe peasant with a penchant for fine French food, even finer women. While his country was starved into prehistory, he dined on foie gras and sipped Bordeaux well into those chilly Pyongyang evenings. As he grew older he went from semi-corpulent young man to a frail geriatric who looked like he would soon find himself on the wrong end of a particularly nasty police line-up. So why do so many of us still kowtow to tyrants who pretty much advertise their mile-

wide sadistic streak on their clammy foreheads? The answer lies in a human being’s need to be led, or rather, to be a follower. From organised religion, to Big Corps, the smartest men in the room cottoned-on to our penchant to imitate sheep at the drop a woolly pillow, aeons ago. The need for us to feel that firm guiding hand on our shoulder has been ingrained into our psyche since we were drooling infants, and is hammered in, all the way through our drooling adulthood. Unfortunately the firmest of hands is also quite often the heaviest, weighed down as it is by a glove of bloody chainmail. We will always have tyrants, because humanity needs them. We need them to show ourselves how bad things can get; we need them so that we can

TALK BACK Warning to youngsters The article on dangers posed by using headphones while driving (19-12-2011) has brought out the danger in such practices. In my neighbourhood and on the roads I see several people, both motorists and pedestrians, with headphones plugged in go about totally oblivious to their surroundings. They are risking their lives as well exposing others to the dangers of their blissful oblivion. It is good that the authorities have taken notice of the situation. Ram Babu East Marredpally

keep our moral compass pointed in the right direction; we need them so that we may remind ourselves how frail our condition really is; and above all, we need them so that we can unleash our need to rebel against the rickety foundations of dogma. Soren Kierkegaard wrote: “The tyrant dies and his rule is over, the martyr dies and his rule begins.” Unfortunately, one man’s tyrant is another man’s martyr, and there will be many who will believe that with the death of Kim Jong-il, their dreams have disappeared into the arid North Korean dust. Their tears should serve as a reminder to us living in the free world: A reminder that this too shall pass, and where one tyrant once trod, another’s shadow slowly falls.

I have one request to Postnoon, please put more cricket-related stories on your sports pages. I buy your paper during my tea break and since internet is blocked at my office we eagerly wait for the updates on Australia series. The sports pages have a new and refreshing look compared to the morning papers. I also request you to add more local events. Raj Kamal Hyderabad

Postnoon has brought about a revolution to the way newspapers in Hyderabad look. The paper looks uber-cool, hip and as trendy as the latest gizmo or designer wear. We friends hang out in the canteen after classes and go through the paper. It has something of interest to everyone. For the first time, we youths can flaunt a newspaper on the campus without being branded as nerd or a geek. The paper also helps us keep track of key events in the city and ensure we don’t miss out on any opportunity to have fun. Keep up the good work, Postnoon. We wish you all the best. V. Gene discovered for Weaver syndrome New genetic testing confirms diagnosis in children with rare genetic disorder

S

cientists have found a gene that causes Weaver syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that typically causes large size at birth, tall stature, developmental delay during childhood, and intellectual disability. Published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, the discovery means that testing the EZH2 gene for mutations could help families who are seeking a diagnosis for their child. “For the families among whom we identified the gene, this discovery definitively brings the diagnostic odyssey to a close — it’s DNA confirmation that their children have Weaver syndrome,” says Dr William Gibson, the study’s lead investigator. Dr Gibson is a scientist at the BC Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). “Our discovery enables DNA-based diagnostic testing for this particular disease,” says Dr Gibson. “For physicians who suspect Weaver syndrome in one of their patients, we can now confirm it if we find mutations in EZH2. There may still be other Weaver syndrome genes, and we need to study more families to be sure.” Presently, doctors diagnose Weaver syndrome by assessing a child’s face, growth, skeleton and other clinical features. People with Weaver syndrome have an oversized head, typical facial features, problems with muscle tone and joints, and differences in the way their skeleton matures. Mutations in the

NSD1 gene, which normally causes a rare disease called Sotos syndrome, are also known to cause Weaver syndrome in some cases. There may be other genes involved in Weaver syndrome that are yet to be discovered. “Now we have an answer for these families and we are also in a position to provide answers to other families affected by this rare and difficult disease,” says Dr Gibson. He is available to see new patients clinically for diagnosis of Weaver syndrome. As a result of this discovery, Dr Gibson’s team now offers sequencing of the EZH2 gene on a research basis in partnership with the Ottawa

Hospital Research Institute. Dr Gibson’s team can be contacted by email at wtgibson@cfri.ubc.ca. Traditionally, hunting for a disease-causing gene has relied on tracking a gene throughout a family’s history. However, Weaver syndrome usually occurs only once in a family, as it is thought to be caused by a new genetic mutation in the sperm or egg that conceived the child. For this study, the investigators sought patients with Weaver syndrome from Canada and the US. They approached Dr David Weaver, who discovered the syndrome in 1974 and is professor emeritus of Medical

and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. In two families that Dr Weaver had examined, the Canadian team looked for brand new genetic mutations by comparing the DNA of affected children to DNA from their unaffected parents. Once the investigators identified EZH2 as a candidate gene, they sequenced it in DNA samples from a third Canadian family. They confirmed that an EZH2 mutation was in this third family’s child but not in either of her healthy parents. EZH2 is a cancer gene that is known to be mutated in leukemia, B-cell lymphomas and some other blood cancers. The gene helps control how DNA is packaged around specific proteins, which in turn helps to regulate which groups of genes are turned off and on. “Our finding illuminates an emerging area of biology that links developmental syndromes and cancer,” says Dr Gibson. “It appears that some mutations in EZH2, if these occur early in life, produce developmental syndromes such as Weaver syndrome, whereas mutations in the same gene that occur later in life can produce cancer.” Dr Steven Jones is the study’s senior author who led the DNA sequencing and bioinformatics. He is head of bioinformatics and associate director of the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre at BC Cancer Agency, professor in the UBC Department of Medical Genetics, and professor, Molecular Biology at Simon Fraser University (SFU).

BITS OF ADVERSITY TOUGHEN YOU UP LIKE STEEL WASHINGTON: Going through

adversities might seem like a bitter pill to swallow, but such experiences often help people develop resilience. “Of course, everybody’s heard the aphorism: ‘Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger,’” says

Mark D Seery of the University at Buffalo. But in psychology, he says, a lot of ideas that seem like common sense aren’t supported by scientific evidence. Serious events, like the death of a loved one, a natural disaster, being

attacked, experiencing sexual abuse, or being separated from your family, can cause psychological problems. Seery and colleagues pointed out that people who experienced many traumatic events were more distressed in general, but then those

who had experienced no such events, too, had similar problems. One possibility for this pattern is that people who have been through difficult experiences have had a chance to develop their ability to cope. “The idea is that negative life

Popular toys could damage hearing in kids

WASHINGTON: Some popular toys produce noise equal to that of a chain saw or rumble of a subway train and could damage hearing of children, reveals a study. Otolaryngology (dealing with the ear, nose and throat) researchers from the University of California Irvine, tested 10 of the loudest toys available in stores and found that they exceed 90 deciBels and several reached 100 or more deciBels. The toys include Road Rippers Lightning Rods, Tonka Mighty Motorized Fire Truck, Marvel Super Shield Captain America, Green Lantern Colossal Cannon, etc, said a university statement. “Generally toys are safe if used properly,” said Hamid Djalilian, associate professor of otolaryngology and director of neurotology and skull base surgery at California. “We tested the sound levels at the speaker and again at 12 inches, which is about the length of a toddler’s arm,” he said. According to Djalilian, “Children are very sensitive to loud and highpitched sounds. Problems can arise if a noisy toy is held too close to the ears, hearing loss from noise damage is permanent and not currently curable.” Unprotected exposure to sounds above 85 decibels for a prolonged period can lead to hearing impairment, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Two factors contribute to this loudness and duration. The louder a sound is, the less time it takes to cause hearing loss, Djalilian noted. He suggested that someone buying a noisy toy for a child should pay attention to the speaker’s location, which usually should be under the item than on top. Djalilian also recommended that an adult should hold the toy and listen to its sound. “If it hurts your ears then it’s probably too loud for a child,” he added. experiences can toughen people,” Seery says. This research isn’t telling parents to abuse their kids so they’ll grow up to be well-adjusted adults. “I really look at this as being a silver lining. Just because something bad has happened to someone doesn’t mean they’re doomed to be damaged,” adds Seery. IANS

n an initiative supported by IMG Reliance, the LFW advisory board has selected two designers, Aneeth Arora and Kallol Datta to participate in the Berlin Fashion Week. Known for his prints and patterns, Kallol is excited to showcase his collection in Berlin. “It will be a different set of audience altogether,” says Kallol, who didn’t quite spare a thought that he was selected from a whole bunch of talented designers. Quiz the reticent designer about shying away from the media and Kallol is quick to clear all doubts, “I am not comfortable putting everything out there. It’s not a conscious decision. It’s more like the way I function,” he says and adds, “And I don’t have a PR agency either pushing stories for me.” Even at the LFW, where for each show designers keep press kits, Kallol prefers to do it differently and leaves a postcard instead. “I leave it to the audience to form their opinion,” explains the designer. “There isn’t always a storyline behind every collection I show. In fact two different collections might be tied in together,” said the talented designer who doesn’t believe in conforming to norms. “My designs sometimes are just a reflection of my reaction to the current state of affairs, or the fashion industry and how it’s treated. It is an ongoing dialogue that I have been having with the audience. I wouldn’t say that my collections are inspired by strong modern Indian women. It’s more internalised than that and is difficult to give a voice. It is not polished, or streamlined. There was a time when a collection questioned that immaculate concept,” explains Kallol. So is the designer Kallol Datta quirkiness personified? Kallol disagrees. “Everybody has some quirkiness in them. Even a guy working at a bank has quirkiness in his dressing; it’s just easier to pinpoint certain people,” clarifies Kallol, adding, “I am staid. Almost borderline boring!” Kallol then goes on to explain, “I concentrate mostly on shapes and silhouettes, I love colours too, but then I am partial to particular tones, especially the desaturated ones. Though not clinically diagnosed, I am colour blind! I love working with black and white as they are safe, I also like muddy blues.” The theme for Berlin Fashion Week is love, and it is the fall winter collection. So his collection will have a lot of ivory, brown and black and he is also introducing desaturated pink and red in the collection. “The collection primarily consists of dresses and jackets, it also has stylised trousers. It will consist of 16 to 18 garments, which is quite less compared with others, but I like to keep it minimal because people have a limited attention span; they just want to have a look,” says Kallol. He is working with a waterproof garment, which also provides a shield from the cold. According to Kallol, the fashion industry in India is still small scale, almost like the cottage industry and he an artist in it and he likes to keep it that way. “I might be naive or foolish, but I like to be in my bubble. Trends don’t affect me. For example, if animal print is in, I won’t even pay attention to that, I will work on my own thing,” says Kallol who likes to advocate standardised dressing. “People in India think that fashion thrives on the film industry and they are obsessed about size. I am tall and fat. I wear garments that stick to me but people have a misconception that fat people need to wear oversized clothes and draped outfits, which is so not true! I detest such notions. I don’t know why they use the term plus size, it’s like demarcating them,” says the designer. The designer feels that when it comes to designing, three elements are important for him. “First of all it has to have a personal connect, second, it has to be creative and third, there has to be an emotional connect,” signs off Kallol.

Simply classic

For a lot of girl bands, it’s their gender that becomes their USP, which nine times out of ten overshadows their talent. How difficult is it to keep a band together? We find out

ne of the first examples of a successful girl band was The Boswell Sisters in the 1930s followed by the Andrews Sisters who rose to fame in the 1940s. The mid 1990s saw Destiny’s Child and Spice Girls with the latter becoming the biggest British pop group since The Beatles. And post ‘90s, the Pussycat Dolls has held the title for the leading girl band. The common ground with most girl bands is that in due course, they choose to go their separate ways for different reasons. As Kurt Cobain once said, “The future of rock belongs to women”. If wise-beyondhis-years Kurt was speaking the truth, exactly how far into the future should we have to look? Recording music for commercial success is a different matter altogether but even girl bands performing on a smaller scale, fail to survive. “I used to be a part of a band where one of the members said that ‘only guys’ could make good music. I took it up as a challenge to prove to him that he was wrong. That is how Antidote was formed,” says Antara

Pal, the manager and drummer of Antidote, a city-based all-girl band, which was formed in 2008. “We started off as a group of five but eventually downsized to three. We used to play alternative rock, hard rock and grunge,” she says. But things have changed and the band hasn’t performed in over a year. It’s not the lack of talent but more so the question of commitment and priorities that change when making music is not your only source of income. Isha Anjali Chandra, who plays the keyboard and was a vocalist with the band tells us why the band is not playing anymore, “When Antidote was together, I was in my second year of college. Playing as a band was not a problem as I had a pretty light course load at the time. I was able to make it to band practice about three times a week, for three or four hours at a stretch.

“But by the time my third year rolled in, things changed, what with Antara working, Rinky starting her MBA and the amount of school work I had, we started jamming less frequently. Whenever we got offered a gig, invariably one of us wouldn’t be able to make it. We even tried meeting just to jam for fun, but it didn’t work,” she rues. But hope prevails not just for the Antidote band members but for other amateur bands as well. While Antara believes in finding like-minded band mates and sticking together, Isha relies on the phrase — slow and steady wins the race. “Don’t worry about getting gigs in the beginning. Discover and develop your style and your dynamics first. Find a certain level of quality and comfort before coming into the public eye. So I would say, make it about the music. And the publicity, while it will get people talking — is secondary,” Isha advises aspiring musicians. Even though the band hardly performs anymore, the girls are still great friends and still spend time with each other. “We go for Karaoke nights and reminisce about old times and hope that one day we will get back together,” says Antara with a sigh.

t’s now official, the Beach Boys are reuniting. For those of you old enough to picture scantily-clad California Girls prance about an unusually buff surfer, the band holds a very special place. Why, even the writer of this column is rather famous for his rendition of the Boys’ surf rock classic, Wipeout.

But the zenith of the Boys’ stellar, if at times rather hazy, trajectory lies in 1966’s Pet Sounds. The album changed music forever and continues, till this day, to make harmonies sound ever-so-masculine (although a gruff David Crosby might have a word to say to poohpoohers about the manliness of singing in the musical community). From the happy-clappy opener, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, through the melancholic Sloop John B, the album rushes like a fairy freight-train through God Only Knows, stopping only for Brian Wilson to take an existential smoke break on Pet Sounds, before hurtling away into the sunset to the strains of Caroline, No. The Beach Boys may now be known more for the idiosyncrasies of the Wilson genius, than their trailblazing music, but the fact that they are reuniting should have music-lovers hoping for a surfing renaissance that can once and for all erase the memories of Tom Cruise and Kokomo. Oh! For small mercies.

Lovable rogues of

BOLLYWOOD

The chocolate-boy look or the rugged charm, there has always been takers for both kinds. But you have to hand it to Bollywood, for they know how to make women love dangerous men Isha Mukoo Isha.m@postnoon.com

Hrithik Roshan treaks of gold in his hair, green eyes and a personality to die for — the Roshan boy has it all that a Greek God has. But Hrithik broke away from the chocolate-boy image early in his career. Be it with his role in Fiza, or in Mission Kashmir where he plays a terrorist, Duggu swept many belles off their feet with his lost look and innocent smile. Even as he did the regular lover boy roles, he wowed the audience as a stylish thief in Dhoom 2. The film had all the ladies go weak in the knees.

S

I

has not only been about the chocolate looks, but women love bad boys and it’s been proved time and again in our

movies. Making the forbidden fruit tantalising is an often-used Bollywood trend. Think of the golden years of cinema and the faces that come to one’s mind are that of Dev Anand in Jewel Thief, Amitabh Bachchan and

Dharmendra in Sholay. In recent times, you have Sanjay Dutt in Munna Bhai and the latest is Ranveer Singh with Ladies vs Ricky Bahl. Today we see what makes ladies go gaga over these bad boys. Sanjay Dutt et’s talk about a good gunda. Yes, it’s Sanjay Dutt’s role as the unconventional doctor-cum-gangster from Munna Bhai. He completely changed the perception of people about goondaism — being bad for the greater good in a funny way. A complete romantic at heart, he and his sidekick Circuit showed us the lighter side of the underworld. Despite his roles in films such as Vaastav, Sanjay Dutt in the Munna Bhai series is definitely our lovable rogue.

L

Amitabh Bachchan ou may call him the angry young man of Bollywood, the Shehenshah, or the Don. With his rugged looks and baritone voice, he found a place in the hearts of millions of ladies. Despite being on the wrong side of the fence in Deewar, Vijay is considered as one of his best roles that the Senior Bachchan has essayed, followed by that of Jai in Sholay, which was that of a con man with a good heart. Not to forget the role of Don, which Big B portrayed with supreme panache. We hope to see more of him in this genre.

Y

Dev Anand alk about the eternal lover boy and the image that comes to your mind is of a guy with droopy shoulders, a tipsy walk and a lopsided smile. It was movies like Jaal, Baazi and Guide that took the actor to another level. His films Baazi and Jaal broke the notion of the hero as a good and principled man. In Baazi he played Madan, a gambler who becomes embroiled in a murder mystery, and in Jaal he is a lover boy trying to woo someone else’s sweetheart. Dev Anand brought the ‘cool quotient’ to the clichéd image of the hero. He broke barriers with his fresh cheeky persona, which definitely makes him one of the most lovable actors of Hindi cinema.

T

Ranveer Singh read Pakodey ki Kasam.” This is the phrase that got him into the limelight with his first appearance in the super hit Band Baaja Baraat. With his second release Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl, he has proved he is no onehit wonder. He is just two movies old in Bollywood, but he is an instant hit with the youth and his natural cheekiness makes him desirable. In his latest, Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl, he plays a conman who targets women for their wealth. But Ranveer’s effortless, boyish charm coupled with that toned body make him a stylish swindler, one that ladies would not mind holding onto.

says Katrina follows her dance moves

@rampalarjun Wishing the most amazing couple @iHrithik @sussannekroshan a very happy anniversary, love u both and wish u only happiness forever.

R

akhi Sawant, perhaps true item-girl in Bollywood today, alleges that actress Katrina Kaif has copied her antics in her Chikni Chameli act in Agneepath remake. “I think Chikni Chameli is a good song. Katrina has danced very well but it’s not something new. I have already done all this before. You can watch all my songs, I have already done that,” the 33-year-old said at the Big Stars Entertainment Awards. “I have done this in Dekhta hai tu kya and she did this in Shiela ki jawaani. In Chikni Chameli, she is again following me. It seems Katrina really likes me... It’s alright if someone wants to follow me and dance,” added Rakhi. Rakhi hasn’t got any awards so far. When asked about it, she compared herself with Aamir Khan, though in a light-hearted manner, and said, “Aamir and I are similar. Neither he gets awards, nor do I. But we have won the heart of India and we do not need an award.” The loud-mouth actress, who has dabbled both in television and films, was last seen on the big screen in an item song in Loot. IANS

T

he Czech-born model-turnedactress Yana Gupta has now donned another hat, this time that of a writer. The actor and dancer has written a fitness book titled How To Love Your Body And Get The Body You Love. The dancer who is known for a great figure and lithesome moves incidentally suffered from a chronic eating disorder. Being constantly asked by people for tips to loose weight Yana decided to put her knowledge to good use and came up with the book.

Bollywood tunes set mood at Pak Bridal Week

B

ollywood songs such as Oh re piya, Raat ka nasha and Dhage tod lao added a sensual feel to the Pakistan Fashion Design Council L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week ramp. There was seen less experimentation with silhouettes and cuts and more bling were the highlights of the first day of the extravaganza. The inaugural edition of Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week that kickstarted late on Sunday evening had a mix of two clothes designers, a jewellery designer, a fashion stylist and a makeup artist. Karachi-based stylist and image consultant Nabila opened the show with an interesting theme of Gold to Bold. The idea was to show the shift in the clothes and make-up of brides over the years. IANS

I am thirsty for good roles Shwetha Menon, who will soon make her debut in Telugu with Rajanna, talks about her career so far and her quest for quality roles Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

A

conversation with Shwetha Menon reflects her wisdom. She has been careful in choosing her roles. She has been in the industry for more than 20 years, so how has the journey been so far? She replies, “Oh... it didn't really seem that long unless you stress on the number. I never had to work hard for my roles but I would say, I have begun to take my profession seriously in the last five to six years.” Back in mid-90s, Shwetha was one of the top models in the country and scorched the ramp for several years. The high point of her career was winning beauty pageants like Miss India in 1994 where she was voted second runner up behind Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai. She was also named the first Gladrags female supermodel and finished the runner up at Miss Asia Pacific in the same year. Eventually, she veered away from modelling and began acting in Malayalam films. “Paradesi, which released in 2007, was the turning point of my career. I was cast as Mohanlal's wife in this film and the success of that film got me a lot of recognition. It sort of created a niche for me,” the actor recalls. After PT Kunju Muhammed's Paradesi, it was Ranjith's Paleri Manikyam, which gave a big push to her acting career. She bagged her first Kerala State Film Award and also a Filmfare Award for her role in the film. “After a point of time, I realised that I needed to take risks to get good roles. I want to be known as a good performer and that's one reason why I am always thirsty for good roles,” Shwetha adds. Someone spotted her at the Filmfare Award ceremony in Chennai and recommended her to Supriya, the executive producer of Rajanna. “I was called for a look test and was immediately confirmed for Dorasaani's role. I was clear that I didn't want to be another

character in the film but when I was told about my role in the film, I was thoroughly impressed. Rajanna is a perfect launchpad for me in Telugu cinema,” Shweta says. We tell her that she looks fierce in the film and ask her if she could relate to the character. “No way,” she retorts. “I couldn't believe that a woman could be that rude. Dorasaani reacts like a man and she's an extremely cold-hearted person. I am nowhere close to that in my real life. It was purely acting,” she says with a grin. So what was the toughest part of her role in the film? “It has to be the dress. Since the film was set in the ‘50s, I had to wear an old-fashioned dress with a lot of jewellery. I used to wonder how women used to wear such dresses back then,” she chuckles. The actor also confesses to have had a great time bonding with Nagarjuna and Vijayendra Prasad on the sets of the film. Interestingly, this year has been quite eventful for the actor as she got married to Sreevalsan Menon. And, two of her Malayalam films, Salt N Pepper and Rathinirvedam were huge box-office hits. “People often say that after marriage things go down, but for me marriage has been a blessing. There's something pure about it and you start expressing yourself in a better way,” she says. We ask her if she would act in more Telugu films in future. “Definitely. But it will be a big challenge for me to choose my second film. I don't want to repeat my roles or be stereotyped,” says the talented actor.

day Kiran’s woes at the box-office continue to haunt him. He hasn’t had a single release in over two years and recently his latest film Nuvvekadaunte Nenakkadaunta was taken off the theatres at the last minute. The film was postponed several times in the past as well and the film’s producer Kumar was planning to release the film on December 16; however, he decided to postpone the film to February and immediately all theatres, which were to screen the film cancelled the shows. Earlier this year, Uday Kiran has signed a new film titled Dil Kabbadi, which is yet to take off.

I am an outdoor junkie, says Amala Paul

“I

am an outdoor junkie and I love travelling,” says Amala Paul. Earlier this year she went to Las Vegas to shoot for a film titled Nirantharam Neeoohale in which she shares the screen space with Atharva. “I have always wanted to go to Las Vegas and when I was shooting there I indulged in lot of outdoor events,” she said and confessed that she wasn’t allowed to go to the casinos

since she wasn’t of the legal age. The interesting part of this trip, she says, was getting arrested for speeding in one of the freeways near Las Vegas. “It was so funny. A helicopter chased us for sometime before we pulled over,” she added. She’s currently acting in Balaji Mohan’s Love Failure and Lingusamy’s Vettai.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
