yderabad is known for its traffic snarls and chaos. While lack of traffic sense is usually blamed for the reigning confusion on City streets, part of the reason these snarls occur is due to illegal parking along busy roads. With lack of designated parking places most people resort to parking their vehicles by the road side adding to existing traffic woes. Even the City’s hottest destination for fitness freaks and nature lovers the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy park, popularly known as KBR park, has fallen prey to this menace. KBR park, which includes a rich expanse of forest, grassland and dense scrub within its rocky terrain, is a popular venue for joggers/walkers as well as visitors. But

Vehicles parked along the KBR Park stretch cause problems for commuters wrong parking by joggers irks the commuters who use the stretch to reach their destination. Morning walkers park cars on the road instead of using in the parking area. The stretch of road that connects to Jubilee Checkpost

is an especially busy road and sees heavy traffic during peak hours. But this erratic parking worsens the traffic situations with commuters being forced to negotiate around parked vehicles along the footpath and even the median.

“It’s not like the joggers are unaware of how busy this stretch of road gets during office hours. They just don’t care,” said, Ravi Ranjan, a commuter who drives past KBR park to his office in Kondapur. On an average more

than 10 to 15 cars are parked on the road blocking the road. The police and traffic authorities have to help us solve this problem,” he adds. “The park is frequented by nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts every morning. Almost everybody comes to the park by a car or a two wheeler and end up parking along the stretch of road. But the traffic police try to clear the roads before 8.30 am. However, if it’s causing a traffic chaos during office hours we will look into the matter,” said GVG Ashok Kumar, DCP (Traffic). Joggers however blame this on lack of parking space. “By the time I come to the park there’s no space in the parking lot. In the absence of proper parking, we have no other option but to park near the main entrance at our own risk,” said Vimal Kumar, a jogger.

Bring sanity on ORR

…so that our kids will live longer Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: The wonder, that is Indian roads, is well documented by amused visitors from abroad who never ceased to marvel at the ‘violent coexistence’ of cattle, roaring bikes, screaming cars, trucks and pedestrians, struggling to claim a piece of road for themselves. They have not seen Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) where the deadly game has gone a step ahead of other roads in the country. If they had, they would swoon in dread. Since 2010, as many as 38 people have died and 39 others injured in accidents here. Of them, 10 were related to 2-wheelers, 4 accidents were of 3-wheelers, and 46 accidents involved 4wheelers. The chilling death of Azharuddin’s son and a relative, has come as a grim reminder of the reality that the 158 kilometer, 8-lane expressway encircling the City, has been misused. While authorities are trying to fix the blame, Postnoon check brought out the fact that lack of coordination between authorities and absence of vigil are the villains. If there is a third dimension to the problem, it is the arrogance of influential kids who often take their racing machines to the ORR. The latest fatal death of K Prateek Reddy, 19, son of former Sports and IT minister K Venkat Reddy on Tuesday reinforced our callous approach to issues like safety on roads. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy while inaugurating the recently completed ORR lane between Pedda Amberpet to

another factor: speed-crazy youngsters throng this road on weekends for bike races. Corruption-laden police officials look the other way. Cyberabad police commissioner D Tirumala Rao said, “HMDA Officials did not even put up the required number of signage for commuters. After Azharuddin’s son’s death, we have set up a police check post, it helped us to contain two wheeler traffic movement to an extent,” he said adding that they plan to install speed guns . “But we do not have funds to procure them,” he said.

FAPCCI pegs loss at `32K cr HYDERABAD: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry stood its ground asserting that the loss incurred by the industry beginning the second week of September was around Rs 32,000 crore. The estimated loss for the next five months is actually downplayed at Rs 70,000 crore, said MV Rajeswara Rao, general secretary of the federation. Rao told Postnoon that some vested interests were playing into the hands of lobbyists and spreading canards that FAPCCI went wrong in estimating the losses. The daily loss due to power holidays was Rs 1,000 crore. However, Rs 200 crore could be deducted from the same as generators supported the functioning of the industrial units. Thus, two-day power holidays would account for

Rs 1,600 crore. There was a fourhour power cut and multiply it by five days. Out of 168 hours a week, there was no power for 68 hours, which was 40 per cent of power cut. For the four-hour power cut for five days, the estimated loss was pegged at Rs 670 crore. Thus, the weekly loss was Rs 2,270 crore. He said that the industry and businesses were reeling under power cuts for the last 14 weeks and this would work out to Rs 31,780 crore. At this rate, the estimated loss in the next 22 weeks (five months) would be much more than Rs 70,000 crore. “We took the hours lost due to Sakala Janula Samme that went on for 42 days. We haven’t counted the power cuts then. Either it is a malicious campaign or it is ignorance,” said Rajeswara Rao.

P

riya (name changed on request) is a self-confessed party animal. If there’s a party in town she’s got to be at it and downing a bunch of drinks is commonplace. Yet, the 24-year-old manages to flaunt a svelte figure that could give even models a run for their money. Her mantra – if you’ve got to drink like a fish you skip meals to save the calories! And Priya’s not the only PYT in town following this trend. “It’s the done thing. There are advantages of skipping meals to drink. For starters, I get to look fitter in my party clothes, plus I cut down on the extra calories. But I do take care to eat well on days I’m not partying. So I guess that works well,”she justifies. The party season’s here. Snazzy new outfits, blingy accessories, carefully coiffured hair, dancing the night away, downing a peg too many are the order of the day. While every party-goer realises the effects of too many drinks on their waistlines, it is not a deterrent for people to back off from having a good time. The solution is simple – Drunkorexia, a habit where you cut down on your food intake and instead save those calories for those martinis. It basically serves three purposes; limits calorie intake, saves you money and helps you get drunk faster. This is of course ignoring the long-term repercussions this habit could have on your health. Alcohol is known to be calorie rich

food that’s spicy and has been fried and you have a recipe for an obese future,”says Raghuram Kamath, a fitness expert. But does cutting down on food

actually serve the purpose? “Not really. What most people forget is that while they are limiting their calorie intake it’s also robbing them of the nutrition they get from

4

their food,”says Dr M Gayatri, nutritionist at Apollo Hospital. “For starters, they lose out on essential vitamins and nutrients that are usually obtained from a balanced diet. Also skipping meals can send the body into starvation mode and consequently the metabolic rate slows down to conserve energy. This in turn leads to weight gain,”she explains. Given the fact that alcohol is acidic in nature, drinking on an empty stomach can have an adverse effect. As a result, acidity and ulcers can be common problems that a person can face. Plus the resulting hangovers can be more severe and leave you in a foul mood. Alcohol-related liver cirrhosis is also something you should watch out for. “If one is so worried about the empty calories alcohol will be contributing, one can simply modify the way they drink and snack. For instance, instead of using sodas and syrups as mixers, water can do the trick just as well. Fried snacks can be replaced with steamed foods like dumplings or boiled peanuts which are just as yummy, but healthier. Besides, skipping meals during the day for a party at night is not wise. Instead one can opt for healthier options like salads and multigrain sandwiches,” advises Raghuram. And if the calories really bother you that much then you might want to shake a leg on the dance floor. Dancing helps burn a lot of calories. So shed all inhibitions and let your hair down. Besides, you can always exercise more rigorously the next day to make up for it.

Christmas hols leave parents flummoxed Sudeshna Koka sudeshna.k@postnoon.com

ust a few weeks ago educational institutions in the City were groaning under the burden of having to cope with the loss of 45 working days thanks to the Telangana agitation. With the Sakala Janula Samme forcing schools and colleges to stay shut, students were forced to make up for the loss of time by working over weekends and forego their Christmas and Sankranti vacations — a move that was met with much disappointment. However, a majority of the private and staterun schools have suddenly announced Christmas vacations from December 23 to January 2. Expectedly, this announcement has been met with much cheer by kids, who are thrilled to be getting a break from their gru-

elling schedules. But parents across the City are now floundering trying to come to terms with this unplanned vacation. “Post the Telangana agitation we were told that there would be no Christmas holidays. Now they have suddenly announced vacations. While it is good news, we should have been informed earlier. We could have made plans for the vacations and booked tickets if we had to,” says Vinod K, a parent. Aparna, a parent, agrees. “We had planned to visit my cousins in Australia this Christmas. But when we were told there’d be no vacations we dropped those plans. Now, out of the blue, we’ve been informed about the holidays. But it’s too late to plan any trip,” she says. While the move has come as a bit of a surprise to most, Anju Sharma, principal, Phoenix Green School, explains, “We have been

working on every Saturday and second Saturday without a break. Hence, we decided to give our students and teachers a break.” Schools claim that they’ve been able to cope since they’d been working over weekends and a few extra hours each day. A few schools also plan to shut for Sankranti holidays in January. “Students are used to this break and it will be unfair to deprive them of it,” says Swathi K, teacher, Pallavi model school. However, disappointed parents rue the fact that this sudden announcement has left them with little scope to plan anything for the upcoming break. “Even to handle them at home we need great planning,” says, Shailaja P, a parent. She adds, “I have two school going sons and we were informed of their vacations only last week. Now we’re running out of ideas to keep them entertained and busy.”

ashion is constantly changing and evolving. Hyderabad has become like any other metropolitan where young girls are willing to experiment with western wear,” says designer Gauri, while launching the Gauri-Nainika winter collection at Anahita. While the designs remain the same across the board, it’s the sizes that differ says Gauri. “In Delhi and Mumbai we stock up on small and extra small while here its medium and large that sells more. Also very skimpy clothes don’t do too well here,” she says. Most of their collection here is inspired by Hollywood with bright colour schemes and the focus on comfort. “Hyderabadis are very clear about their fashion sense and are open to new styles,” says Nainika. The designer duo would love to work with Tollywood stars too. Cherzad K Pestonji, the owner of Anahita says, “This winter there will be mostly western wear made with luxurious fabrics. Indian designer wear doesn’t suit every occasion. Gauri and Nainika collection balances flowy falls along with defined structures.”

house — Pitti Haveli. An ancestral property, the haveli was built two centuries ago by Marwadi businessmen who came to Hyderabad for trade. They hailed from a village called Nagore

near Jodhpaur. A 115 years later the second portion was added and the final part 118 years later. Pitti Haveli epitomises a Rajasthani Haveli with its Brahmasthall architecture. This type of architecture is of the courtyard style where the middle of the house is open and is surrounded by rooms. The exterior of the haveli is panelled by stain glass that look gorgeous when the sun reflects on them. The interior is equally charming with Chinese mosiac tiles covering the floors and high beams and wooden arches. Most of the paintings hanging on the

walls of the haveli are from Khubi Ram and Sons. The unique feature about these paintings is that they all depict scenes of Radha and Krishna together but are painted in European style. The haveli does not house any modern painting. The Pitti Haveli has been declared a heritage structure by INTACH. It is partially used as a residence. It belongs to the Pitti family, famous for Vinita Pitti and ace jewellery designer Suhani Pitti. While on a shopping trip to Begum Bazaar one can galnce at the historical marvel, Pitti Haveli is.

Indian student murder: Oz teen jailed for 13 years SYDNEY: An Australian teenager who fatally stabbed Indian student Nitin Garg, fuelling a diplomatic row with New Delhi over racist violence, was Thursday jailed for 13 years. The youth whose identity has been suppressed was just 15 when he attacked Garg, 21, as he walked through Melbourne parkland to work on January 2, 2010, stabbing him during an attempt to steal his mobile phone. Garg, an Indian accounting graduate, managed to stagger to his workplace, a nearby burger restaurant, before collapsing with fatal stab wounds to the abdomen. He died early the next day in hospital. The highest-profile in a string of attacks on Indian students in Australia, Garg’s murder made international headlines and outraged public opinion in India, sparking accusations of widespread racism against migrants. Diplomatic ties were tested, with Delhi condemning the killing as a “heinous crime on humanity” and “an uncivilised brutal attack on innocent Indians”.

Steve Jobs statue unveiled in Hungary BUDAPEST: A bronze statue of Steve Jobs has been unveiled here in the Hungarian capital to honour the Apple co-founder who died on October 5, a media report said. The statue is located outside the headquarters of software design company Graphisoft, whose founder Gabor Bojar commissioned the statue, Xinhua reported. Nearly two metres tall and weighing around 220 kg, the statue was designed by Hungarian sculptor Erno Toth. It depicts Jobs in a jumper and jeans with arm outstretched, in the middle of a product presentation.Inscribed on a bronze iPad-shaped tablet at the foot of the statue is a quotation from Jobs: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

This undated file handout photo shows Indian student Nitin Garg in Melbourne AFP shortly before he was killed

It followed a spate of muggings and beatings, accompanied by migration scams and colleges charging for substandard courses, which prompted street protests by Indians in Melbourne and Sydney in 2009. Australia’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for international students was badly damaged, leading to a drop-off in enrolments and sparking a government review of the tertiary education sector. Judge Paul Coghlan on Thursday described Garg as an “innocent and random victim” but said the crime was spontaneous and he accepted that his attacker, now 17, was remorseful and had no intention of killing when he went to the park. The judge also ruled that it was a crime of opportunity rather than race. “The community abhors the use of knives because of the consequences such as this,” Coghlan said. The teen, who pleaded guilty to murder and attempted armed robbery, must serve at least eight years of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

South Korea disputes claim that Kim Jong-il died on a train

A Korean man reads a newspaper showing the late North AFP Korean leader Kim Jong-Il and his son Kim Jong-Un

N

orth Korea is moving fast to consolidate its new leader Kim Jong-un, with senior military officials already having pledged allegiance, the South’s intelligence service believes. It also disputed the official account of Kim Jong-il’s death, telling MPs in Seoul he could not have died en route to a visit because his train had been stationary all weekend. Officials suggested the account could have been created to burnish his image as a Dear Leader devoted to his people. A source with close ties to Pyongyang and Beijing told Reuters that the military had vowed to support the “great successor” and an unnamed South

Korean source told Yonhap news agency that Kim Jong-un had issued his first military order – for all units to return to their bases – just before the announcement of his father’s death. Official media said more than five million North Koreans had gathered at monuments and memorials in Pyongyang since the announcement of Kim’s death, aged 69, on Monday. Dr Leonid Petrov, an expert on North Korea at the University of Sydney, said it would be crucial to see what new roles Kim Jong-un assumes and how other key positions are filled “in the coming days, months and even years” “If it is Jang Song-thaek (the young general’s uncle) it means

Kim Jong-un will be more of a ceremonial figure. If he goes straight to the chairman’s seat which would be logical, he will be very firmly put in the driving seat,” he noted. Petrov added that Kim Jong-il appeared to have prepared the ground for his son by purging officials over the past two years. But analysts stress that Kim Jong-un will wield less power than his father. In Seoul, Won Sei-hoon, director of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), threw the account of Kim Jong-il’s death into question by saying there was no sign that Kim’s special train ever left Pyongyang station over the weekend. He cited US satellite surveillance phtos.“We kept tabs on Kim’s whereabouts until Thursday but could not locate him starting Friday,” added Won“We believe he died at home.” “Death on the train is possibly the best story that the North Korean regime can use to promote Kim as a hardworking leader who worked for the people until the moment he died. North Koreans would feel there’s a huge difference between an easy and peaceful death in his bed and death at work far from home,” a senior South Korean official stated.

Fun and frolic in a flat world

‘Mum’s home doesn’t have a big chimney for Father Christmas’ L eo Park, six, was understandably alarmed when his mother Jade began designing a new holiday home with a chimney that was too small for Father Christmas. So he wrote to local builder Jeremy Paxton, whose team set to work on the “perfect Father Christmas chimney” using a simple mathematical formula. Leo wrote: “I am worried that my mummy’s house doesn’t have a big enough chimney. I think Father Christmas will get stuck. Please can you help? Love Leo.” Mr Paxton was taken by the sweet-natured note and commissioned an architect and a mathematician to design a Chimney that could fit Saint Nick, his bulging frame and a sack full of presents on Christmas day. On Monday, Mr Paxton unveiled the chimney, which is undergoing practical tests, at the Lower Mill Estate near Cirencester, Glos. Leo and his mother were

guests of honour as a crane lifted Father Christmas up to the roof of the £750,000 four-storey property and lowered him into the Cotswold stone chimney, which goes all the way down to the sitting room. “A perfect fit,” said Father

Cat diaries: Ginger cat loves to travel by bus

T

he ginger moggy, who was named after the Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist, has taken to hopping on and off the public transport at the bus station near his home. The 15year-old Tom even sits on bemused passengers’ laps as the bus makes up to 10 mile round trips from Bridport to Charmouth in Dorset.

Dodger is such a regular customer that some of the drivers take tins of cat food to work with them to give to him. They even know what stop to let him off at. At the end of his journies the roving moggy returns to his home and owner Fee Jeanes. Mrs Jeanes, 44, believes Dodger first took a liking to the buses as they are warm like greenhouses when the sun is on them. Mrs Jeanes, 44, said: “We

moved here 19 months ago and our house backs onto the bus station. “He is an old boy and is very friendly. At first Dodger kept going to the bus station because people there fed him tit-bits and scraps of food. “But then he started climbing on board the buses because they are almost like greenhouses when it is sunny. “Then last week I found out he had travelled to Charmouth and back, which is a 10 mile round trip. I hadn’t seen him all morning until my daughter Emily told me one of her friends had just seen him on the bus at Charmouth. I couldn’t believe it and panicked. I got into my car to go off and look for him and then at that moment the bus pulled up near our house and low and behold he got off. He had fallen asleep on board and nobody knew about it. When the driver realised he knew who Dodger was and where he lived and kept him on board. That afternoon I saw Dodger climb on board another bus and I rushed to tell the driver. I was shocked when she told me Dodger was always on there and liked to sit on the seats because they are warm from where people have been sitting.”

Christmas. “I wish they were all like this.” The idea was born after Mrs Park met Mr Paxton at a party and expressed a desire in buying a new holiday home on the estate. “When I got Leo’s letter I was

just going to write back to him at first, but then I got to thinking there was more to it,” said Mr Paxton, the founder and owner of the Lower Mill Estate. “I contacted one of the Lower Mill architects, Andy Ramus, who has recently become a dad himself and he was really taken with the idea. “He talked to a mathematician who came up with a formula and produced 3D computer images and working drawings for the perfect Father Christmas chimney.” The hard work paid off as Leo was left suitably impressed by the design. “It was brilliant. That’s the best thing ever,” he said. “He didn’t get stuck. He went right down. It was fantastic. “I’m glad I wrote the letter. It means in future Christmases there will be no problem with everyone getting their presents on time.” Leo and his mum Jade, from

Hertfordshire, said they were looking forward to moving into their custom-built home sometime in the New Year. Mr Ramus added: “I have recently become a father and when I was approached by Jeremy Paxton with little Leo’s letter and the chance to play a part in putting the magic back into Christmas I jumped at the chance. “We specialise in small buildings and this has to be the smallest and most unique we have ever taken on. We hope that Leo and Father Christmas are happy with our work.” While Leo said he wanted a Scalextric motor-racing set for Christmas, he added what he really wanted for Christmas was Father Christmas to find and return is his pet dog, Percy. The two-year-old chocolate labrador has been missing since being frightened by gunshots in woods at Christmas Common near his home.

Seeing the world in a different light

I

t’s sometimes amazing, the amount of skill and versatility displayed by the visually challenged. Especially when they’re able to do certain things better than those with perfect vision. Photography, for instance. If you’re wondering how it could ever be possible that a blind man could take photographs, Evgen Bavcar has gone and done just that. In fact, he is a noted photographer, with his works being published and exhibited around the world. Bavcar, who was born in a small Slovenian town near Venice in 1946, met with two consecutive accidents that completely robbed him of his sight. This, before he even reached the age of twelve. Around four years after this incident, he happened to have access to a camera for the very first time. The first snap he ever took, was of a

girl he loved. It was then that Bavcar realized that “I secretly discovered I could possess something that I could not see…” When asked how he manages

the amazing feat, he said, “I photograph what I imagine. The originals are inside my head. It is a matter of creating a mental image, the physical record which best represents the work of what is imagined,” he adds. Bavcar admits that there are things that escape him, but says that this is true of photographers who can see as well. “My images are fragile; I’ve never seen them, but I know they exist, and some of them have touched me deeply.” His photographs are developed on contact sheet with the help of those who “serve as mediators between the contacts and my own inner reality.” The manner in which Bavcar describes his work itself is artistically beautiful. He is said to have put visual beauty into the context of blindness.

oxer Floyd Mayweather Jr has been sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to reduced battery domestic violence and harassment charges, reported The Guardian. Las Vegas judge Melissa Saragosa also ordered the 34-year-old, who has held world championship titles in five divisions, to complete 100 hours of community service and pay a $2,500 (£1,600) fine. The plea deal Mayweather made means that he avoids trial on felony allegations that he hit his former girlfriend and threatened two of their children during an argument at her home in September last year. Mayweather is currently the WBC world welterweight champion.

REDKNAPP HOPES NEPHEW LAMPARD STAYS BENCHED

H

arry Redknapp hopes Andre Villas-Boas leaves Frank Lampard on the bench at Tottenham tomorrow night as he believes the Chelsea midfielder remains a huge threat to his side. While Lampard remains an important part of the Blues' plans, he is no longer an automatic choice, as demonstrated by his omission against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge earlier this month. Lampard came on as a substitute in that match and scored the winning goal from the penalty spot as Chelsea won 2-1 and Redknapp would be delighted to see the 33-year-old left out of the starting XI at White Hart Lane. "I hope he doesn't play," said Redknapp, Lampard's uncle, today. "I'd be quite happy about that.”

GUNNERS BEAT VILLA 2-1

A

ston Villa winger Marc Albrighton scored the 20,000th goal in the Premier League but a late header from Arsenal substitute Yossi Benayoun earned the visitors a 2-1 victory at Villa Park. Albrighton's milestone effort came nine minutes into the second half after a mistake by Gunners defender Thomas Vermaelen. Arsenal striker Robin van Persie equalled Thierry Henry's club record - 34 - for the most Premier League goals in a calendar year before Benayoun's 87th-minute decider before Villa defender Alan Hutton was sent off in stoppage time for two bookable offences. Villa have donated the 20,000 cheque from Barclays for the 20,000th goal to their official charity partner, the Acorns children's hospice.

Man Utd chase City with 5-0 win M

City climb to top Sergio Aguero bagged a goal either side of the interval to take his seasonal tally to 15

S

ergio Aguero scored twice as Manchester City beat Stoke 3-0 to claim top spot in the league on Christmas Day for the first time since 1929. Aguero, signed for a club record £38million from Atletico Madrid in the summer, bagged a goal either side of the interval to take his seasonal tally to 15. Adam Johnson completed his first full 90 minutes in the Premier League since the middle of October and marked the occasion with a powerful first-half strike. Stoke were made to pay before the half hour after Samir Nasri and David Silva worked a

short corner routine that allowed the Spain star to race forward unopposed after his team-mate’s dummy run had fooled two defenders. Silva exploited the opportunity by slipping a pass through to Yaya Toure, who in turn squared into the six-yard area. Thomas Sorensen was equal to Vincent Kompany’s closerange effort but the Dane could only push the ball into the path of Aguero, who bundled home from barely a yard. City doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Johnson picked up a loose ball and smashed a brutal effort through a packed penalty area

Terry vows to clear name

C

helsea and England football captain John Terry vowed on Wednesday to prove his innocence after prosecutors said he would face criminal charges over allegations he racially abused QPR’s Anton Ferdinand. Terry was ordered to appear in a magistrates court on February 1 over the incident during a Premier League match in October. Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London, said: “I have today advised the Metropolitan Police Service that John Terry should be prosecuted for a racially aggravated public order offence following

comments allegedly made during a Premier League football match between Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea on 23 October 2011.” She added: “After careful consideration of all the evidence, I am satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute this case.” Terry, reacting to the charge, said in a statement, “I am disappointed with the decision to charge me and hope to be given the chance to clear my name as quickly as possible. I have never aimed a racist remark at anyone.” AFP

into the corner. The ex-Middlesbrough man was having a fine evening, although he was matched in that by Aguero, who after forcing Sorensen into another save, bagged his second. It was a clinical goal, as Gareth Barry slipped a pass out to Nasri, whose low cross from the right split the Stoke defenders and allowed Aguero to finish at the far post. Aguero was 90 seconds too late to claim the Premier League’s 20,000th goal but he nearly completed his hat-trick shortly afterwards, but only succeeded in flicking his shot wide of the far post.

anchester United kept up the pressure on Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester City by flattening Fulham 5-0 at Craven Cottage. Danny Welbeck, Nani and Ryan Giggs were on target in a first half which was dominated by United with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov completing the rout after the interval. The only disappointment from the evening was Phil Jones’ exit in the 20th minute after the England defender was caught by Clint Dempsey’s arm while duelling for the ball. It took just five minutes for the visitors to break the deadlock. Nani burst down the left flank, galloping the length of the Fulham half before producing a superb low cross that unmarked Welbeck tucked away with ease. United continued to dominate thereafter and deservedly grabbed a second in the 28th minute. Giggs played a short corner to Antonio Valencia and, after receiving a return pass, floated in a superbly weighted cross, which Nani directed past David Stockdale. United continued to press forward in numbers as the Cottagers struggled to cope, with Phillipe Senderos looking particularly out-of-sorts and almost giving away a penalty for a mistimed challenge on Welbeck. The former Arsenal defender was guilty of leaving Welbeck free for the opener and saw a first half to forget compounded two minutes before the break. Nani was given acres of space to deliver the ball to Giggs, who became the first player to net in every Premier

Giggs’ goal against Fulham extended his unique record of scoring in every Premier League season. The Welshman has actually scored in 22 seasons, since his debut for United in March, 1991. League season when his low drive deflected off Senderos’ legs and looped over the backpedalling Stockdale. After being booed at halftime, the Cottagers improved, epitomised by Mousa Dembele and John Arne Riise coming close. However, their misery was compounded when Rooney added a fourth with a 35-yard piledriver before a typically nonchalant Berbatov backheel completed the rout. ES

KICKS OF FURY AZ Alkmaar’s goalie Esteban Alvarado fights with a fan who ran on to the pitch during the last-16 Dutch Cup tie with Ajaz. It is not clear who was at fault, as Alvarado appeared to retaliate against the fan after being kicked himself, reported The Guardian. AZ coach, Gertian Verbeek, ordered his team off the pitch after Esteban was sent off. The match was called off with Ajax leading 1-0. PIC: AFP

Editorials ORR, THE killer road

F

or speed demons, the Outer Ring Road is a honey trap. Youngsters, mostly from affluent families who can afford superbikes and fast cars, try to test their machines and end up losing their lives. It is fun to put your foot down on the accelerator and feel the wind in your face — so much that you forget about your loved ones and their grief if something goes wrong. With the death of Komati Venkat Reddy’s son on Tuesday evening on the ORR, it is on its way to be known as killer road. Other names of people that come to the mind who lost their children to mishaps on ORR are those of Mohammed Azharuddin and Kota Srinivasa Rao. We share their grief, but we cannot truly fathom the depth of their sorrow. We don’t intend to sermonise, but speed kills.

WHY WE LOVE... Shane warne

N

ame a player who says something is going to happen and makes it happen. In a game as unpredictable as cricket, if that happens, that’s wizardry. And Shane Warne showed in a Twenty20 match why he is called the spin wizard. Shane was bowling to Brendon McCullum, and speaking to commentators live, he said McCullum "might try to sweep me so I'll just slide one through, faster"; he walked the talk. Warne has faced criticisms for many things: dipping form, sexting, countless flings... But, when it comes to spin bowling, he is a master who has no match… a wizard and a legend indeed.

Novel idea The story on the “mobile school” that goes to students was very interesting. Someone else has to take the initiative when the government and the bureaucrats, both eating up the tax payers’ money, fails to deliver. It is good that the NGO has kept the constraints faced by children in the slums while organising their unique initiative. Assured food makes attendance an interesting affair, kudos to their practical approach. Since the government cannot reach everyone, the least they can do is encourage such private initiative and speed up sanctioning of permits and other official formalities. S Aravind Sitaphalmandi

In Syria, the dead are calling for our help Urban Jetsam Dean Williams

T

hey’re dying in their hundreds, cut down by the guns of oppression, trampled by the jackboots of a leadership clinging desperately on to the last vestiges of power. In Syria, the dead have no voice. As Bashar al-Assad’s rabid legions spread their tentacles across a country on the cusp of civil war, the world dithers at an increasingly impotent (if that is at all possible) UN. Russia and China baulk at soul-sapping sanctions, keeping a firm eye on the prize of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and silent in the knowledge that Bashar’s totalitarian government is akin to their own. The US and UK, still licking the wounds so severely inflicted by insurgents in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan, are not even close to putting military intervention on the table. France, fresh from a back-slapping operation against Gaddafi’s Libya, knows not to push its luck. While the world vacillates, Syrians are murdered for no other reason than their want of change. The scars of our apathy are still fresh in the sands of Darfur, the jungles of Myanmar, the foggy desolation of North Korea, and the deafening silence of Zimbabwe. We don’t even mention Rwanda, the Khmer Rouge and Pinochet’s genocide in Chile anymore. The world is no stranger to silence, in fact in silence we have often watched history curl its bloody fist and slam it down on the weak. In Syria, the world still has a chance to make amends for the failures of the past. But time is running out. As Arab League monitors head to the country, hopes of a ceasefire are high; those held for reconciliation between factions, slightly subdued but there nevertheless. The Arab League, however, comprises no social trailblazers. Its member list reads like a who’s who of oppressors and tyrants. From the medieval Saudi Arabia and Yemen to the

Criminal cops When the policeman, the public’s first level of contact with the law enforcement machinery, turns to crime, the trust in the system is lost. The police force already has a bad name for high handedness and corruption. They are seen in partnership with criminals, unscrupulous politicians and law violators of every type. It is such a relief that the higher officials are taking the initiative to clean up the system and restore the lost trust. increasingly dysfunctional Bahrain, inviting the Arab League to mediate between an oppressor and his mute victims is like asking a mother to prosecute her only child. Not a hope in hell. If the West wants to continue to be at the vanguard of social and political change then it must buffet the immovable troglodytes in China and Russia; it must bypass the despotic Middle East and move swiftly. Unlike Iraq, this is the good fight. This is the one worth sending your children into battle for. TALK BACK Pedestrian problems I wonder why no one is highlighting the plight of pedestrians. The planners in our City administration are ignoring this very important aspect. Whatever little space is available as sidewalks is encroached by shops, trolley vendors, street vendors and illegally parked vehicles. Two wheelers and three-wheelers taking the sidewalks to jump traffic queues and endangering the life of unsuspecting pedestrians is a common sight on our City roads. Please bring out the pedestrians’ problems so that the concerned authorities will take notice. Iqbal Ahmed Lakdikapul

table of men. It’s time we showed our muscle in more ways than shouting at Russia for a ban on a holy book. Raving and ranting is the playing field of the Third World. If we truly believe we have gone from ‘developing’ to ‘developed’ then it’s time we acted like it. The world does not revolve around the sub-continent. The world revolves around the people that populate it. It resides in their search for freedom, and in their quest for a better life. We can either be a part of that journey, or an obstacle in its path. And there are no bigger obstacles than silence and apathy. Speak up now, or forever lose your humanity.

Shocking corruption

What’s the big deal?

The revelation by the wine shop owners’ association head has been shocking. Though the public is aware that there is corruption in liquor business, the extent of it is really surprising. The sickest of the lot are the politicians. In the open, they speak out against alcohol consumption but indulge in liquor trade through relatives or benamis. The fact that there is an efficient and effective network for bribing at every level — from minister to peon — shows that corruption is deeply rooted in the system. We too need an Anna Hazare to tackle this. Saiprasad R Bowenpally

I don’t understand what’s the fuss over the ban on Bhagvat Gita in Russia. Russia is a sovereign nation and it may chose to ban whatever it finds offensive. On what grounds may we ask them to reconsider its ban, I wonder? I think this controversy has come in handy for our leaders to distract us from the real issues that need urgent attention. By fussing over trifles such like these, we as a nation would look nothing but frivolous. Dear leaders, please let’s be sober and show some maturity. Naveen Gopal Secunderabad

Toyota to launch two new models T Etios. We expect to export 20,000 cars a year to begin with. n Last year there have been a lot of recalls by Toyota globally. How could the company weather the situation? In the US and a few other countries, several vehicles were recalled. Very fortunately, India operations were not impacted. Of course, we have received some enquiries or questioning from customers on one issue or the other. But we sincerely replied that their vehicles are okay.

oyota Kirloskar is launching two new vehicles in the upcoming auto show in New Delhi, but the company wants to keep the excitement and suspense revved up. The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, indeed, affected the business cycles of the company. The world’s largest carmaker now wants to enhance the local manufacturing to 90 per cent of each unit, said Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd in a tête-à-tête with A Saye Sekhar

interest rates, inflation and also frequent fuel price hikes have affected our sales. But our Toyota businesses have seen a growth. Our market share in India went up from three to six per cent. We doubled our growth, mostly because of the launch of Etios and Liva. We are very close selling to 130,000 units. n How many cars are you exporting from India and to where? We have not started the exports as yet. We will commence them from March 2012. We will export the sedan and hatchback of

Eyes 20% global sales growth in 2012

When do you propose to launch Lexus in India? We will launch Lexus brand in 2013, because we have not yet concluded on what models of Lexus have to be introduced here. We just decided to implement the brand Lexus. We are evaluating each product carefully and we will take decision on the models later. As of now Camry and Prado Land Cruiser are imported as completely built-up units. n How has the performance of your company been in India? This year, unfortunately, due to the economic conditions there is a general slowdown. High

TOKYO: Toyota expects a 20 per cent growth in global sales in 2012 after a dismal 2011 on the domestic front when the March 11 earthquake and tsunami hit demand. The automaker expects to sell 8.48 million units worldwide in 2012, and plans to boost global production by almost a quarter to a record 8.65 million vehicles, focusing more on emerging markets, the company said. A statement said the firm would look to further increase its total output to 8.98 million in 2013. A turbulent 2011, in which the

global economic slowdown also dragged, is expected to show domestic sales plunged 19 per cent across the group -- including subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino -- with a 24 per cent fall in sales of the Toyota brand alone. Worldwide group sales are expected to show a six per cent fall for the year, the company said. Toyota spokeswoman Amiko Tomita said the 2012 global production target is an ambitious one, which would beat its current record of 8.53 million units set in 2007 before the onset of the financial crisis.

n How have the earthquake and tsunami affected the company? The company is badly affected due to earthquake and tsunami. There is no doubt. It has affected our Indian operations too. We import many parts of the cars from Japan. Our operations here too were affected. We also import parts from our Thailand manufacturing unit. The production dropped by 10,000 units in terms of volume then. We are now trying to manage that impact from Thailand. I cannot quantify the loss in monetary terms. n How much of localisation happened in Etios and other models? For Etios, 70 per cent is being manufactured locally, while 30 per cent is being imported. We are going to establish engine plant and transmission plant in Bangalore. Within one year, we will reach 90 per cent of localisation of Etios. We are going to invest significantly on these manufacturing units. n Are you planning any new launches in Auto Expo 2012 of New Delhi? Yes. We will launch a couple of exciting new models. But please keep the excitement on, until they are unveiled.

Sensex drops by 193 points Birthplace to launch MUMBAI: The BSE benchmark Sensex fell by 193 points in early trade on Thursday as investors booked profits after Wednesday's rally amid worries over slowing domestic growth. The 30-share Sensex, which closed up 510.13 points in the previous session, fell by 193.41 points, or 1.23 per cent, to 15,495.80. The wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty Index shed 59.15 points, or 1.26 per cent, to 4,634.00. Brokers said apart from profit-booking by participants, a weakening trend on other Asian bourses also dampened the trading sentiments here, giving fuel to the selling pressure. IT, metals, auto, capital goods, realty and banking stocks, which recorded significant gains in Wednesday's trade, succumbed to profitbooking on Thursday, dragging down the Sensex. Meanwhile, in the Asia region, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was down by 0.68 per cent and Japan's Nikkei shed

0.62 per cent in morning trade on Thursday. The rupee fell by 32 paise to trade at Rs 52.82 per dollar on Thursday as the US currency firmed against euro and other rivals overseas. A weak opening in the domestic equity markets also impacted the rupee sentiment, dealers. Dollar gains against euro

and other currencies overseas on doubts about solving the euro zone debt crisis too weighed on the rupee, they added. The rupee had gained 37 paise to close at more than one-week high of Rs 52.50/51 per US dollar on Wednesay following a sharp rebound in domestic stocks.

HYDERABAD: Birthplace Healthcare, Hyderabad-based healthcare service provider will launch 12 premium birthing centres in different cities by 2014 with an investment of around Rs 15 crore per centre. The first one will be established in Hyderabad in March 2012 and followed by Coimbatore, Chennai, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. The initial investment for the first birthing centre is Rs 20 crore (Hyderabad) which also includes project development costs. But, later the investment costs will range between Rs 10 crore and Rs 15 crore for each centre. “As of now, we are self-funded. However, we are exploring financing options. We may go for debt or equity or approach venture capitalists for expansion,” Tarun Siripurapu, Managing Director, Birthplace Healthcare, said here on Wednesday. The cash break-even would take one year and the project break-even would be achieved in two years. “Our goal is to have 10 per cent of the premium maternity market

Tarun Siripurapu share, once we get national foot print. We have empanelled many popular gynaecologists and are aiming to facilitate 2,000 deliveries a year only in Hyderabad,” he added. The Hyderabad centre will have 25 rooms with six NICU beds and employs 50 people initially. Birthplace will be empanelled with leading insurance companies and there are undergoing talks with corporates to provide services to employees who want to avail insurance.

Want a young mind?

EAT LESS

Resolutions, will you won’t you?

According to research the brain can be saved from the ravages of age with a strict diet better cognitive abilities and memory, less aggression, and tended to avoid or delay Alzheimer's disease. But they have not known exactly why. “CREB1 is known to regulate important brain functions as memory, learning and anxiety control, and its activity is reduced or physiologically compromised by aging,” said the study. Mice that were genetically altered to lack CREB1 showed none of the same memory benefits if they were on a lowcalorie diet as mice that had the

WASHINGTON: Eating less may keep the mind young, according to Italian scientists who reported Monday they have discovered the molecular process by which a strict diet may save the brain from the ravages of age. The research, published in the US journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is based on a study of mice that were fed a diet of about 70 per cent of the food they normally consumed. Scientists found the calorie-restricted diet triggered a protein molecule, CREB1, that activates a host of genes linked to longevity and good brain function. “Our hope is to find a way to activate CREB1, for example through new drugs, so to keep the brain young without the need of a strict diet,” said lead author Giovambattista Pani, researcher at the Institute of General Pathology, Faculty of Medicine at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Rome. Researchers have previously discovered that mice on diets showed

molecule, and showed the same brain disabilities as mice that were overfed. “Thus, our findings identify for the first time an important mediator of the effects of diet on the brain,” Pani said. “This discovery has important implications to develop future therapies to keep our brain young and prevent brain degeneration and the aging process.” According to Marc Gordon, chief of neurology at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York, the findings could shed new light on why some people who are obese in middle age encounter cognitive problems later in life. “Mid-life obesity has been associated with late-life dementia. However, the physiological basis for this association remains unclear,” said Gordon, who was not part of the study. “These investigators have studied the effects of limiting caloric intake in mice, and have identified a biochemical pathway that may mediate at least some of the brain's responses to dietary restriction.” AFP

start every year with resolutions of being a more considerate and kinder doctor and usually, by March am parroting the line, “Resolutions and promises are made to be broken!” Because patients never listen, don’t come for follow ups and Hippocrates (if he crossed my path), could be strangled! It makes me wonder, where we go wrong — both as doctors and patients?

Doctor’s dogmatism n

We are unrealistic: We tell a working woman with two small brats that she should be eating salads, milk, timely meals and exercise. Do we realise the impossibility of the cutting/cooking/balancing and managing that they endure? n We come on too strong: Medicine dictates that certain conditions need restrictions. So we happily advise people to stop smoking, alcohol and late nights. Whether they lose the habit or not we definitely lose a patient and any chance of making a difference. n We never practice what we preach: Patients watch what we do. So when a doctor is puffy and overweight, they find it hard to believe that we know what we are talking about! n We get too much into the illness: The fault lies both ways. The connect that used to be there with patients seems to be lacking. Thus, patients become a conditions, and treatments protocols. n We won’t accept alternative therapies: We seem to think allopathy has all the answers, and are very sceptical of any other treatments patients want to pursue. Maybe we need to understand they have their own thoughts, expectations. (The concluding part of this column will appear next week. The writer is a gynaecologist and obstetrician practising at Happy Women Clinic)

WELL-BEHAVED MEN ARE FASHIONABLE

Watches, they add a lot of weight to your personality

A decent belt

=A lot of us tend to go wrong when it comes to footwear. One should be extra cautious when teaming your footwear with your outfit. Always pair up the right kind of shoes with your ensemble, it makes sense to have one pair of each kind. =Day and night bring on different moods and this applies to dressing as well. Make sure to dress up for the occasion. =A little over the top dressing makes you look loud and often ends up in a disaster. Try and keep it as simple as possible.

Hot cufflinks Cool shades, keeping in mind your face cut

White linen pants

A well-fitted suit. A three piece also looks cool A plain V-neck t-shirt, if you have a good body to carry it off else, it's a total disaster AS TOLD TO TANIYA TALUKDAR

=What a lot of men don't get is that hairstyle should complement one's height and face cut. So the next time you are at the hairdresser's get a style that fits the bill. =Clean is in, so try and do away with the stubble which anyway doesn't suit many. =Lean is in too. Bulging muscles or extra fat in the body is unattractive to the opposite sex and it does not looks posh either. =Well-behaved men always look more

fashionable than the ones who are not. They are also a hit with the opposite sex, so stay well-behaved and stay stylish. =Always wear a smile, it is the best accessory you own and it will help you in the long run. =Men have access to limited accessories, of which the watch is the most important. Pairing the right watch with your outfit enhances the look. = Make sure not to wear too many accessories like women.

An unexpectedly compelling series that seems exactly like Brothers and Sisters but manages to say that each unhappy family is unhappy in their own special way

PARENTHOOD FAILS TO HIT THE MARK Sana Mirza sana.m@postnoon.com

W

ith its huge cast of familiar faces, Parenthood is an American comedy-drama series which first premiered in March 2010. The series is a second remake of the 1989 Ron Howard film of the same title, which starred Steve Martin and Dianne Wiest. The show developed by Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) addresses modern day challenges that come along with raising kids in this posttechnological world, addressing issues that affect both kids and parents. The series centers around a quartet of suburban siblings whose life is filled with trials and tribulations as they grapple with everyday challenges while still managing to be there for each other in times of need. The show does por-

tray some fine performances and though there is little to differentiate Parenthood from boundless other family melodramas (read Brothers and Sisters), all quirky TV-loving families do vary, but within a definitive range. So what you see in Parenthood is nothing new nor is it any different; an old-school over competitive sports nut of a grandpa, an irresponsible cool uncle, a rebellious teenage daughter, and a young son who has something slightly eccentric about him. As Season 1 kicks off, our focus falls on a cash-strapped single mom Sarah (Lauren Graham , Gilmore Girls), the unstable 38-year-old daughter, who has packed her two teenaged kids in a rusty station wagon, leaving her drug addict of a rocker husband behind, to move back in with her parents. Her folks, Zeek Craig T Nelson, Coach) and

Camille Braverman (Bonnie Bedalia, Heart like a Wheel) are the definition of everything ideal. Married for the past 46 years, the two have managed to keep their marriage and family intact by hiding their problems like dust under the carpet. Sarah's older brother Adam (Peter Krause, Six Feet Under”), is the first born of the Braverman lot and an unofficial counsellor for each of his siblings. While he tries to portray the role of a sponge, absorbing everything he is told, he is also discovering that his young son Max's (Max Burkholder) mannerisms may point towards a serious condition. Meanwhile, Julia (Erika Christensen, Traffic), the third of the Bravermans, is a successful corporate attorney and a complete antithesis of her elder sister. She manages to juggle work as well as try

and spend time with her young daughter, who innocently turns her down in favour of her husband, Joel (Sam Jaeger), a committed stay-at-home dad, happily assimilated to domesticity. The youngest of the Bravermans, Crosby (Dax Shepard), the 'bohemian' commitment-phobe who is in a relationship with a babycrazy girlfriend. But what Parenthood seems to be selling is the idea of a big family fantasy which is defined by outdoor meals and ball games. Parenthood does occupy a place on the comedy-drama circuit somewhere between Modern Family and Brothers and Sisters. Like the movie that inspired it, Parenthood isn’t an instant classic, but it’s smart and warm and knowing, and it casts its net so wide that at least part of it should connect with you.

A

Max Burkholder

merican child actor, Max Burholder is better known for doing voice-over of Roo for My Friends Tigger and Pooh. He has also made an appearance on the Brothers and Sisters as Jack McCallister. In Parenthood, Max suffers from Asperger's Syndrome and plays the role of Adam's son.

Lauren Helen Graham

S

he gained popularity with her much acclaimed role as Lorelai Gilmore in the hit TV series Gilmore Girls, for which she received a nomination for Best Actress in a Television series (Drama) at the 2001 Golden Globe Awards. She plays Sarah Braverman in Parenthood.

S

Erika Christensen

he had several small roles in various television series before making appearances in films like Traffic, Swimfan, How to Rob a Bank and The Perfect Score. She portrays the role of the careerdriven Braverman sister, Julia Braverman-Graham.

Piers Morgan entangled in phone hacking scandal W

ell this doesn’t look good. Testifying before a government inquiry in Great Britain about his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal, CNN talk-show host Piers Morgan didn’t do himself any favours when he refused to answer questions about the illegal activities

said to have occurred on his watch as the editor of the Daily Mail between 1995 and 2004. “I have no reason...to believe [hacking] was going on,” he told the London-based panel via video link. During intense grilling, when asked whether he had listened in at any time

to a voicemail the former Beatle left with his then-wife, Heather Mills, the newly departed America’s Got Talent judge admitted that he had done so, and even acknowledged hearing Sir Paul singing We Can Work It Out as the couple were making up after a nasty fight.

Welles’ Oscar goes for $1 mn

I

n Hollywood, some dreams are for sale after all. Legendary director Orson Welles’ Academy Award for Citizen Kane was sold at auction on Tuesday for $861,542, according to the Nate D. Sanders auction house. Neither the seller’s nor the buyer’s names were disclosed, but famed magician David Copperfield was the losing bidder to the collector willing to shell out nearly $1 million for the gold statue. The statue was originally owned by Beatrice Welles, the daughter of the famed director.

Editor quits after magazine uses N-word A

fter Eva Hoeke quit as editor of the Dutch fashion magazine, Jackie, over a racism row in which singer Rihanna was referred to as the “ultimate n---bitch” in the magazine, Jackie’s publisher has invited Rihanna to weigh in on the matter in its next issue. Hoeke issued an apology before quitting the editorship. Hoeke, who had been with the Dutch fashion magazine for eight years, oversaw the most recent issue, which included a brief item about Rihanna’s style in which the singer was referred to as the “ultimate n---a bitch.” After learning of the use of the racial slur, Rihanna took to Twitter to

blast Hoeke and the publication. “I hope u can read english, because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights!” she wrote. “I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!! You ran out of legit, civilised information to print! There are 1,000’s of Dutch girls who would love to be recognised for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article. Instead, u paid to print one degrading an entire race!” Hoeke then apologised for the slur, posting a letter to readers on the magazine’s Facebook page, saying there was no “racist motive” behind the choice of words.

But he declined to reveal who played the tape for him or how he even came to hear it on the grounds that “it would compromise a source.” It now appears that said source had broken the law as Mills has stated there was no way anyone might have heard the message unless the line was hacked.

om Cruise still feels the need, the need for speed and, well, just about anything else that gets his adrenaline pumping. But while the megastar is certainly no stranger to doing many of his own stunts, will there ever be a time when he’ll simply leave the dangerous thrills to others? “Not yet, not yet,” the actor told E! News with his trademark laugh at the New York City premiere of Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol. “I’m sure there will be, but not yet.” Ah, but does wife Katie Holmes want him to stop, say, dangling from skyscrapers, much like he does in his new flick? “You know, she knows and appreciates what I do,” Cruise said with a smile.

RAJANNA is one of the best films of 2011 Cast Nagarjuna, Sneha, Annie, Shwetha Menon, Nazar, Mukesh Rishi Director V Vijayendra Prasad Music Director MM Keeravani Rating

Room Hemanth Kumar

The making of a classic

T

he characterisation of Rajanna is inspired from the life of Suddala Hanumanthu, father of lyricist Suddala Ashok Teja, who in turn narrated the story to Vijayendra Prasad. The scene where Rajanna inspires the villagers to revolt against the feudal landlords is based on a real incident when Hanumanthu sang Vey Vey Debbaki Debba to inspire 500 farmers to revolt against 60 Razakars who fired at them. Another subplot inspired from a

true incident is about the girl who goes to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister. In the film, Mallamma (Annie) goes to New Delhi as she believes that only the PM has the power to free her village from the clutch of feudal landlords. The film's team did an extensive research about the life in 50s to recreate the era for the film to bring authenticity to the village life. Scouts were sent to different areas to buy old material to fill in the sets. The costumes in the film have a

lot of Marathi influence since the Nizams had asked the landlords from various regions to migrate to the Telangana region to collect the taxes and rule the lands on their behalf. Several actors cast in supporting roles in the film are from Maharashtra since the makers wanted to be as authentic as possible in their portrayal of life in the Nizam The film has extensive special effects and hundreds of sketches and storyboards were drawn to get the right effect.

ajanna, starring Nagarjuna and Annie in lead roles, is a riveting drama which combines fact with fiction to a staggering effect. Armed with high emotional quotient and great storytelling, the film is an ambitious effort to recreate an important part of our history, which is often neglected in Telugu cinema. Directed by Vijayendra Prasad, the film boasts of outstanding performances from the lead cast and a great job by the technical team. Annie stars as Mallamma, who's the cynosure of all eyes in her village in Adilabad district. Set in 50s,one day, when her grandfather takes her to a feudal landlady Dorasaani's (Shwetha Menon) house, the little girl infuriates her by singing a song. Dorasaani orders her to never sing again but Mallamma makes the same mistake soon which puts her life in danger. She realises that the only way to escape the wrath of Dorasaani is to meet the prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru who lives in New Delhi. Before going on this journey, she comes to know that she's the daughter of Rajanna (Nagarjuna). Who was Rajanna and what did he do for the village? This forms the rest of the story of this drama. The film's biggest surprise is Annie, the 10-year-old girl who plays the role of Mallamma. It's a pleasure to watch her as the courageous girl in the first half of the film and the child actor has done an extremely good job in carrying the film forward. Notwithstanding her age, she's going to be a serious contender for every award earmarked for Best Actress next year. Shwetha Menon is ruthless as Dorasaani and she

embodies the menace and cruelty, which her role demands, quite well. If Annie and Shwetha Menon dazzle in the first half, the rest of the film completely belongs to Nagarjuna. His characterisation is emotionally charged and Nagarjuna is terrific in his role. He steps into the shoes of Rajanna with great ease and it's been a long time since we have seen him in such an action-packed avatar. Sneha, Nazar, Mukesh Rishi and other supporting actors have done a commendable job. Performances from the cast aside, MM Keeravani's terrific background score and mellifluous tunes forms an important undercurrent throughout the film. Although his work doesn't dominate the proceedings, but the music is an invisible character in the film and it stays with the audience throughout the film. Kudos to all the lyricists for complementing Keeravani's work so well. SS Rajamouli, who choreographed couple of major action sequences, brings his style and leaves us stunned, especially after the song, Vey Vey. The editing by Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao is good and there's hardly a boring moment in the film. Some of the sets, especially the Nelakondapalli village, created by Ravinder deserve special mention. The locales selected for the film, the costumes and the dialect used add more to the aura of the 50s. Vijayendra Prasad, who directed the film, deserves applause for not taking any major cinematic liberties with the story. It's hard to figure out what part of the film is fiction or fact and there lies its biggest strength. Rajanna is a film about people who are still grappling with feudalism even after independence. It's about their helplessness, anger and how they react when they find inspiration to lead a life of dignity and honour. Every story needs a hero and the villagers in Nelakondapalli are lucky to find two in a short span of time. Two thumbs up for Rajanna. It's a film which you can't afford to miss.

Three generations team up for a song in Rajanna

F

ilmmaking is a team effort and in the past, we have seen actors from different generations of the same family come together onscreen. In fact, many of Rajamouli’s films are like a family affair with his father, Vijayendra Prasad, penning the story, Rama Rajamouli designing the costumes, Keeravani composing the music and Kalyani Malik composing the background song. Perhaps, for the first time in recent years, three generations from MM Keeravani’s family have come together to compose a song. Gijigaadu, one of the popular soundtracks from Rajanna, was written by MM Keeravani’s father K Siva Datta and his elder son Kaala Bhairava is one of the two singers who has been credited for the song. MM Keeravani had composed 12 songs for this film which had been directed by Vijayendra Prasad. SS Rajamouli choreographed the action scenes and Rama Rajamouli designed the costumes.

Suriya to host KBC’s Tamil version

S

uriya is going to join the league of Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan very soon. He has been chosen to host the Tamil version of the popular game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. The Tamil version, which will be aired on Vijay TV, has been titled as Neengalum Velalam Oru Kodi and it has a tagline—A question can change your life. Suriya is the most popular choice for MNCs when it comes to brand endorsement deals for Tamil Nadu and trade analysts in Chennai are already betting big on this show as Suriya is quite popular with the family audience as well. Over the years, Suriya has emerged as a big star in Tamil Nadu and even in Andhra Pradesh, his films have done consistently well. The actor is currently acting in KV Anand’s Maatran, which will be simultaneously released in Telugu in the summer of 2012.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
