Naidu shuns celebrations POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

T

DP president Nara Chandrababu Naidu has shelved any New Year celebrations in memory of the girl who underwent the most shameful act in the

land of Gandhi. In a statement issued today the TDP chief said he was grieved over the sad demise of the brave girl who had opened the eyes of every Indian to the dangerous conditions existing in India with regard to protection of girl child and working women. He also said there would be no New Year celebrations either at the NTR Bhavan or in any of the party offices across the State. Taking a cue from their leader, party cadres have shunned celebrations as well. It’s a time for serious introspection and silent work to eradicate the dark forces.

ast year we had reported how Several youngsters from the City were injured and four had died in road accidents on New Year’s Eve. High spirits and lack of police checks had led to the accidents. However, this year too a number of accidents have been reported due to rash and negligent driving. This, despite the heavy police checking in place.

THINGS WE 5LEARNT TODAY The column that teaches everyone something new about the way the City functions.

1

Don’t celebrate New Year’s. It is the latest fad. Everybody is vowing to not celebrate the new year in view of the Delhi victim’s death. While the show of solidarity is good, are these leaders actually doing something about women’s safety?

2

It is not such a happy new year for everyone. With 16 deaths across the State and eight grievous injuries in the City, the new year has turned out to be dull for a few.

3

Party hard. Litter the lake harder. Who cares! The HMDA permitted the public to party at People’s Plaza, but what was left behind was a mounds and mounds of garbage.

4

It’s an issue that is going to continue plaguing us. The T issue has been simmering for the last couple of years and it is likely to do so in the new year as well. It’s just one of those things.

Kishan wants Akbar prosecuted for hate speeches

C

ondemning MIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi’s provocative remarks against Hinduism and Hindus, State BJP president G Kishan Reddy has demanded that the State government immediately initiate criminal proceedings against the former for making derogatory remarks against Hindu gods and goddesses that might disrupt communal harmony in the State. The BJP leader appealed to all the religious leaders to condemn Owaisi’s outbursts. He also took all political parties to task for not opening their mouths against the hate speech

and expressed anguish over their indifferent attitude. He also condemned Akbaruddin’s remarks against Bhagyalaxmi temple at Charminar. Alleging that the MIM was speaking in defence of cow

slaughter, Kishan Reddy said he would hand over the alleged CDs to the CM and all party leaders for seeking strong action against him. He also said they would produce the CDs in the court to bring home his guilt. The BJP leader demanded that the government initiate criminal proceedings against Akbaruddin Owaisi for his hate speech and address a letter to the Election Commission seeking derecognition of MIM for

making attempts to promote animosity among people on religious grounds and blatantly trying to divide the people. He also demanded that the State government write to the Assembly Speaker to annul the membership of Akbaruddin Owaisi and keep a vigil on anti-social and anti-national activities of MIM. He also appealed to all sections of people to maintain peace and communal harmony. State BJP vice-presidents Chintha Sambamurthy, Malla Reddy, and Vijaya Laxmi, general secretaries Achari, Devendar Reddy and others were present. NSS

SHOCK OF POWER

Industry and commerce, the number one employer in the State, believes that the worst of the power crisis is yet to come. “Instead of augmenting power supply, tariff hike is on the cards,” Devendra Surana, president of FAPCCI, said dejectedly. To him, 2013 holds only troubles. Joining him with a worried face is J Nageswara Rao, Secretary, FAPSIA.

State and its electoral harvests. Every party is going to act as if it were on the right side of T, but the fact is that it is a no-win situation for all if a separate state is not carved out.

Grim power score board Overall power shortage to demand: Around 20 per cent Power supply to the industry: Around 50 per cent Paying extra price on cost of service: 30 per cent GSDP growth rate from MarchSeptember: 6.50 per cent Industrial growth rate from MarchSeptember: 2.57 per cent

T-POT

2013 will see AP wincing from the steaming T-pot, which is at the boiling point. Telangana is going to haunt the State in the election year. All parties are going to get scalded by the boiling pot because no political party worth its salt can ignore one-third of the

CRIME AGAINST WOMEN

A poor minor Muslim girl was forcibly taken away, ‘married,’ impregnated and thrown out after her ‘husband’ slapped a talaaq on her. Yes, in the heart of the City. The man and his family are living free. What more is required to brand this a ‘barbaric’ city? Ask Sultana, team head of Shaheen, a courageous agency founded by a Muslim woman. “Domestic violence is more com-

mon in Hyderabad and AP. Every year, there is at least 30 percent rise in domestic violence cases, but nothing has been done so far,” she points out. A total of 77,390 cognisable crimes were reported in AP in 2012 up to May, compared to 73,415 cases in 2011 (up to May), registering an increase of 5.27 per cent. However, the percentage of crimes detected during 2012 is 46.65 compared to 2011’s 47.50. This year, till May, as many as 36,103 cases have been solved out of 77,390 cases registered across the State. As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics, in 2011, Hyderabad stood at third place, after Delhi and Bangalore, on the list of 52 cities in the country for recording maximum cases pertaining to violence against women. The alarming fact is that despite the rise in crime rate against women in the City, the conviction rate is very low. On an average, nearly 200 cases of rape are recorded, and the conviction rate averaged 10 per cent in past three years. Out of every 1,000 houses, 945 have cases of domestic violence, says a survey by a city NGO. And to what extent the rulers care for women issues is clear from the continued headless status of the women commission.

ENVIRONMENT

The City and the State face a

bleak 2013 from the decaying environment. Rulers proved ecoilliterate to such an extent that they didn’t realise that every human action has an environment cost. The City, being the mascot of the State, reflects this sad state more than any other. Hyderabad’s water bodies have been raped and pillaged systematically for the profit of individuals and corporations. Money continues to be spent for ‘water preservation’ but the pride of Hyderabad, Hussain Sagar lake, still stinks; the Musi retains its tag as an eyesore and more lakes continue to fall prey to encroachments. According to a study released by Prof C Ramachandraiah, faculty member at Centre for Economic and Social Studies, “About 15MLD (million litres a day) of industrial effluents, containing mainly nitrates, phenols and cyanides from about 100 units under hazardous category in the Jeedimetla industrial estate, in addition to 55MLD of domestic sewage, are released into Kukatpally Nallah, which flows into Hussain Sagar lake. The RTA and the Hyderabad police do nothing to check auto pollution. GHMC continues to sleep over solid waste treatment. All this means there is no hope left for Patancheru or Jawaharnagar, two of the City’s most polluted areas, symbols of apathy and negligence. Adding to pains this year are the birth pangs of Metro Rail that will rattle the City and its population with added air and sound pollution, besides traffic jams.

Infrastructure in the City and elsewhere in the State is going to make news this year. Investment in infrastructure is not as much the problem as its tardy implementation. Adding to the City’s choking woes would be Metro Rail, that is bound to create scars and craters and displace life and businesses of thousands in the new year. While all are singing the paeans of Metro Rail, Dr C Ramachandraiah, convenor of Citizens for Better Transport in Hyderabad, sees in it no less a scandal than Coalgate or 2G. “It is bigger than CWG and 2G spectrum scandals,” he said. “The mass health hazard it would kick up is incalculable.” The neglect of sports by the GHMC can be pointed out by the fact that some small projects in Secunderabad, like Teachers’ Colony playground and Marredpally Cricket Ground, are yet to get their due. It has been more than a year since the work was approved for construction at Teachers’ Colony park, but due to the intervention of the local MLA,

everything has come to a standstill. “We have taken up the work again and some of the facilities have already been completed. The GHMC will be providing green cover at Marredpally before summer starts,” clarified an official. A SOLE BRIGHT SMILE In the dim scene, one person wants us to smile — Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain. He says the GHMC will be spending `813 crore for infrastructure development in 2013. “When the current team took charge, the GHMC was having an overdraft of `470 crore. But now we have `125 crore deposit. We shall be spending more for developmental projects and for welfare in the next year,” he explained. Reported by Prudhvi Raju Kathari, Inkeshaf Ahmed, Rahul Ramakrishna, Md Nizamuddin and Anubha K Singh.

he 10 finalists battled it out for the Who Is The Best Cook title on the last day of 2012. Eager to start their preparation, the women arrived at South Park restaurant in Jubilee Hills promptly at 11am. This was their last chance to show off their culinary talents. Like all big competitions, even www.studentmug.com’s finale of Who Is The Best Cook was not spared the usual delays. The place hadn’t been set up, the gas stoves were not in place, etc, etc. The already anxious participants became even more impatient about the delay. While some complained that they had a long day ahead — since it was New Year’s Eve and all — others were not so happy with the heat. Again, just like all big competitions, things eventually fell into place and participants got busy cooking at 1pm. There was no looking back from then on. Chopping, stirring, skinning, frying... all began with gusto and the drive to win. Since participants were asked to prepare something using basmati rice, one of the event sponsors, the air at the venue was fragrant with that typical biryani aroma. At least four participants prepared biryani to impress the judges. However, there were a few who tried different things, like triple-layered rice, saffron rice with chicken curry, phirni and so on. Unlike the shortlisting rounds held every Sunday of December, the final was not so much about mingling and bonding with one another — it was competitive this time. Though the festive spirits were high, the two-

hour long finale was only about winning. The presentation of the dishes was better, the flavours were richer and the support was greater. Even though everyone put their best ladle forward yesterday, Hima Bindu from Divya Shakti apartment building in Ameerpet bagged the first prize — an LCD TV worth `25,000 — with her prawn rice and prawn curry. Samina Shadan, from Garden Towers apartment building in Banjara Hills, won the first runner-up prize — a refrigerator worth `15,000. She prepared prawns biryani. The second runner-up prize — a microwave worth `10,000 — was given to Priya Mathur from My Home Glory apartments in Banjara Hills for her unique triple-layered rice.

Hima Bindu’s coastal prawn rice Ingredients A pinch of cardamom n 2-3 cloves n Prawns n Cinnamon n Ginger and garlic n Mint, coriander n Curry leaves n Bay leaf n Ghee n Coconut milk n 2 cups rice Method Soak the rice and pour coconut milk in a separate cup. Heat ghee, fry the masalas in it, add green chillies, onion, prawns and all the leaves. Fry ginger and garlic and add 1:2 coconut milk and water. Once boiled, add soaked rice to it and give it two whistles in a pressure cooker. n

CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN

IT’S SEX TRAFFICKING,

NOT RAPE Girls are trafficked, forced to have sex with multiple men and given out on a contract basis, starting from `10,000 for four nights, but this is not considered rape.

DEEPASHRI V deepashri.v@postnoon.com

M

eera was just 13 when she was married off. There is no marriage certificate for proof. Her “husband” started sending her to brothels in different parts of the State on a “contract basis.” She is now 16 and was rescued in September 2012 from Ongole in AP, where she was sent on a contract of `30,000 per month, and was forced to have sex with four customers every night. But a case of rape has not been filed. “Some customers were also caught with her. They are out on bail and are happy now,” said Ram Mohan, secretary of HELP, an NGO which rescues and rehabilitates human trafficking victims. “Cases are booked under other IPC sections like ‘nuisance’, but not under rape.” S Umapati, special director of AP police academy, said these cases are definitely considered rape by law. “He (Umapati) knows from a long time (that it is not charged under rape). What can he do?” said Ram Mohan, who is also the chairperson of the

child welfare committee. He has brought this issue into focus many times, but “they don’t bother,” he said. According to crime bureau statistics, 442 trafficking victims were rescued till October this year and 618 traffickers were caught. These are just the cases caught in AP and do not include those women who were trafficked from AP to other states.

WHERE IS HOME?

Neha, 26, was pregnant with her second child when she decided she had no other option but go to Mumbai to earn a living. She wanted to escape from her village Marikuppam, near Bangalore. Her husband abandoned her when she couldn’t give him the money he demanded. Her sixyear-old daughter is still with her husband. Neha didn’t get along with her stepmother. Neha’s friend gave her a number and asked her to call on it if she had no other option. Upon reaching Mumbai, Neha didn’t have a place to stay. She called the number and a woman came to pick her up from the station, and took her to an apartment at Grant Road.

“I didn’t like it there when I reached,” she said. “There were many girls there. I tried to run away, but couldn’t. No one was allowed to go out from there.” “Even though she was pregnant, she was forced to have sex,” Mohan said. “She was eight months pregnant when she was finally rescued. She faced a lot of problems.” Neha was caught in a police raid and sent to a rescue foundation. Neha and her onemonth-old son are currently in Ongole under the care of HELP, with around 20 other women, rescued from trafficking. “When will they send me home from here, madam?” Neha asked the Postnoon reporter. “I don’t want to stay here. I want to go to my daughter.”

‘FORCED ME TO HAVE SEX’

Hema is 16. She was rescued from a brothel in Mumbai and brought to Ongole, AP. Her

father had come to take her to their hometown in Visakhapatnam. But Hema got down at the wrong station, not realising her father was asleep. “I was sitting at the railway station alone. I was crying,” said Hema. “A man was eyeing me. He must have been 40 years old. He said he’d take me to his didi (elder sister). He said ‘give her your address and phone number. She’ll call your parents and ask them to come and take you.’” Hema believed him and went to his house. The man left her there and “disappeared.” She demanded that the didi call her parents immediately. But she was told her parents would come for her in two days. “For two days she was nice to me. Then she asked me to go to a man to have sex with him,” Hema said. “I refused and she hit me. She locked me in a room, didn’t give me food and forced me to have sex.” The brothel owner tried to sell Hema to a man for `60,000. But she managed to escape with the help of one of the “customers” at the brothel, who even promised to marry her. Hema lodged a complaint

with the police and the brothel was raided last month. “She (the brothel owner) sold two 15-year-old children in Hyderabad,” Hema said. The whereabouts of the children are not known yet.

MY DAUGHTER IS DEAD

“Most women try for employment opportunities outside or are tricked by their lovers. They are not in a position to return home and don’t know what to do for a living,” Mohan said. “Love marriage is a stigma. People question the character of the girl. Parents who have other girl children (and fear their future will be affected), announce in the village that their daughter is dead.” These children, tricked and forced into prostitution, are beaten up if they try to escape from the brothel, are not wanted by their families if they’re rescued, and are not given justice or the compensation that the government owes a rape victim. “Not a single paise is given to children below 16 years.” Where do these women and children go? (Names of all the victims have been changed)

SIT to complete probe in 6 months MUMBAI: In a last minute race to keep its own deadline, the Maharashtra government has named the members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and its terms of reference to probe the multicrore rupee irrigation department scam, an official said Tuesday. The announcement was made 20 minutes before midnight following urgent instructions from Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, camping in New Delhi. The SIT — headquartered in Aurangabad — will be headed by water management expert Madhav Chitale with three other retired bureaucrats as members. It has been given a six-month deadline to submit its report. The other SIT members are former additional chief secretary (finance) AKD Jadhav, former irrigation secretary VM Ranade and former agriculture commissioner Krishna Lavekar. The development follows an assurance by the government in the state Assembly on December 17 that a SIT would probe the alleged scams in the irrigation department. Nationalist Congress Party strongman and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had quit the cabinet in September after allegations of irregularities in the department which he had headed for nearly a decade. However, after the state government issued a White Paper claiming a 5.17 percent increase in irrigated areas, Pawar bounced back as deputy chief minister last month. The SIT has been given nine terms of references covering the entire gamut of state irrigation in its probe. These include reasons for lesser irrigated areas, project cost escalation, delay in implementation and execution of projects, whether administrative procedures were followed while approving cost escalation, fixing responsibility for these lapses and suggesting appropriate action against officials, measures to increase irrigated areas and ensure time-and-cost bound implementation of projects. Obama, GOP seal deal

The two-month delay to spending cuts was financed by increased revenues and spending cuts from defence and non-defence spending. WASHINGTON: The White House and top Republicans struck a deal late Monday to avert huge New Year tax hikes and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff" that had threatened to send the US economy into recession. Vice President Joe Biden, who negotiated the deal with the top Republican in the Senate Mitch McConnell, was on Capitol Hill to sell it to Democratic senators, some of whom wanted tax hikes to kick in at a lower threshold. Had no deal been struck, budget experts warned that the fragile US economy could have been sent spinning back into recession by the $500 billion

The Philippines is to wind down a near-30-year hunt for the embezzled wealth of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, with more than half the supposed $10 billion fortune still missing, the man in charge of the search said. With Marcos' widow and children back in positions of political power, and the government tightening its belt, the cost of the pursuit has become prohibitive, said Andres Bautista, head of the Presidential Commission on Good Government.

The pact, if agreed by Congress, would hand President Barack Obama a victory by hiking tax rates on the wealthy — those earning over $450,000 a year — but exempt everyone else who had been due to see their taxes go up on January 1. It would also put off $109 billion in budget cuts across the government for two months, but would in the process line up another showdown between Obama's Democrats and Republicans in dysfunctional Washington at the end of February. The deal means a return to Bill Clinton-era tax rates for top earners to 39.6 per cent, starting for those who make $450,000 a year and above. Obama had originally campaigned for tax hikes to kick in for those making $250,000 and above.

combined whack from spending cuts and tax hikes. In the end, the deal was clinched just a few hours before a midnight deadline. A Senate vote was possible overnight, while the House of Representatives was not due back into session until Tuesday. World stock markets, expected to be thrown into turmoil by a failure to beat the deadline, are closed for New Year's Day, so lawmakers have a few extra hours of breathing room to get the deal concluded. The president said earlier that the deal would extend tax credits for clean energy firms and also unemployment insurance for two million people that had been due to expire. It was also expected to

include an end to a temporary two percent cut to payroll taxes for Social Security retirement savings and Medicare health care programs for seniors and changes to inheritance and investment taxes. A source familiar with the deal said that the two-month delay to spending cuts — known as the sequester — was financed by increased revenues and spending cuts from defence and non-defence spending. Both Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had signed off on the deal, the source said. Now it remains for Republican House Speaker John Boehner to rally his restive and difficult to control conservative

coalition around the agreement. Earlier, on a day of drama and brinkmanship, Obama had angered Republicans in remarks in which he warned that he was not done with seeking higher taxes on the rich to pay down the US budget deficit. "Now, if Republicans think that I will finish the job of deficit reduction through spending cuts alone... then they've another thing coming," Obama said, while poking fun at the glacial pace of Congressional deliberations. Republicans immediately took to the floor of the Senate to complain. Senator John McCain accused Obama of ridiculing Republicans and of needlessly antagonising House members required to vote for the deal. AFP

KUALA LUMPUR: About 500 Myanmar nationals swam the last 500 metres to enter Malaysia illegally at the end of a 15-day boat journey at the weekend, leaving one dead, police said Tuesday. Police told AFP they had so far found 482 people, including the captain of the 30-metre vessel, since Sunday.

DUSHANBE: Tajikistan said that it had been cut off from natural gas shipments by its neighbour and sole energy supplier Uzbekistan. The announcement comes amid end-of-year contract negotiations and continuing tensions over Tajik plans to build a hydel power station that could choke off Uzbek water supplies.

ROME: Italian jeweller Bulgari, which was bought last year by French luxury giant LVMH, is being investigated for alleged tax evasion via Ireland and Luxembourg, Italian media reported Monday. The company is accused of routing its revenues through countries with lower taxes to avoid paying higher taxes in Italy.

VIENNA: 2012 was the "deadliest year for journalists", said the International Press Institute on Monday, with the highest number of deaths recorded since the media watchdog began its annual tally. At least 31 journalists and eight citizen reporters died in Syria alone in 2012, while 16 others died in Somalia.

AMAZON SAYS SORRY Amazon on Monday said it was sorry for a Web Services mishap that put online film streaming service Netflix out of commission on Christmas Eve. "We want to apologize," Amazon said in a message posted at its website. Amazon.com attributed the outage to a mistake by one of its developers that caused a problem with load balancers at data centers the company uses to provide "web services" to clients such as Netflix. The "event" lasted from early Christmas Eve in California into Christmas morning. More than 27 million Netflix members in the Americas may have been unable to access shows or films online due to the problem.

hisky is Scotland's most recognised asset, with 40 bottles of Scotch shipped overseas each second, according to a survey. Scotch Whisky came top with 26 per cent, ahead of other Scottish icons like tartan apparels, scenery, poet Robert Burns and inventions. About 10,300 people are employed in the industry — many in economically deprived areas, while 35,000 jobs across UK are supported by the industry. IANS

Much needs to be done in terms of innovation, initiative and infrastructure to power the growth of the industry.

“I

T industry’s performance in 2012 can be considered below the expectations. NASSCOM is also revising and reducing growth targets for this fiscal. Overall, 2012 is a very sombre year mainly due to financial crisis in Greece and Europe. There is global slowdown in IT industry with the Euro crisis. Slowing economic growth rate in India also attributed for weakness in the domestic IT market to an extent,” said Suman Reddy, MD, Pegasystems India. Explaining the global macroeconomic situations and its effect on IT industry, he said, “the world is connected right now on all fronts including economics. For instance, Fortune 2000 companies are not restricted to America alone but spread across global markets. Their growth is dependent on the world economy. “For instance, we could achieve our growth targets in USA but Europe fell below our expectations. This is not limited to us but many global IT companies. “The companies have their growth plans according to the expected revenues. The investments that they are expected to make in the country will also get proportionally hit with fall of revenues.

“For instance, if a company could achieve only 80 per cent of their growth targets, their investments will also see a cut down proportionally which we are seeing right now,” he said. He further added, “However, the global recession doesn’t adversely affect all. For instance, we could manage to do well during even during hard financial times. It is important for clients to make operations efficient, retain customers and increase revenues during recession, which could be only possible with IT services. The companies are ready to spend even in tough times on not losing out their existing customers and decrease their costs and be comply with the regulations,” About challenges, he said, “Availability of quality human resource remains a challenge. Today, there are around 10 lakh engineering graduates every year and only 60,000 of them are job ready. The fresh employees too are performing well only after a year. “There is a need to make education system better to provide a quality workforce for the industry. The companies are already spending a lot on recruitment and training. I don’t find any restriction for the companies to partner with academic institutions. A

body should be established though public private partnership, which can channelise and regularise investments and bring in transparency to make academic institutes a better place,” “Although, government did reasonable good in infrastructure front, there is need to fasten the process of completion of ORR and

radial roads. There should be encouragement to startup culture to develop home grown IT companies by providing tax benefits for first few years ,” he said. “However, looking forward, the Indian IT companies should also be innovation centres. No doubt, the cost advantage are helping the industry to attract foreign clients. “But, we should not simply continue by just fulfilling the obligation of what is expected out of us. This innovation will help us to standout and will be a value addition for the global clients.” he concluded.

f the road to hell is paved with good intentions, then most of the work is carried out on January 1. By now, we know resolutions won’t last beyond a week, or if you’re particularly strongwilled, a month. Gym shoes will slowly gather dust, cigarette packs will make a discrete reappearance and work will slowly take over lives again. This much we know, and there’s little we do to change it. But if there’s one resolution we have to vow to keep, it is the one we took on December 17, a day after a young woman was brutally raped and left for dead in Delhi. It may be too late for this unnamed victim, and countless others in other corners of the country, but there’s hope for the rest of us. Hope that we will be able to lead our lives with dignity. Hope that we will be treated like equal citizens. Hope that our gender doesn’t condemn us to a cowardly existence. It isn’t an easy resolution to keep by any standards. It involves fighting ancient, draconian laws. It hangs on changing a deeply entrenched patriarchal mindset. It means that we’ll have to come out of our comfortable cocoons and challenge the way the world works. If you thought losing weight was difficult, try this one on for size. But, like all our other resolutions, this is a noble one, perhaps the noblest we can make. And it’s time we followed through. Because it isn’t only your health that’s on the line this time; it’s the health of the entire country. So make that resolution. And don’t break it.

estruction of police credibility and pride of uniform is one tragedy India faces today. And, for this state of affairs, the general rot born of the failure of the Westminster model of Indian governance and justice system are responsible. The astonishing news of one convicted in 635 rape cases in New Delhi this year is the natural corollary of destroying the status of law keepers. Police weaken every such case for private gain. Inspectors and even their seniors strike a deal with the accused and save them for a price. This is the simple truth which nobody dares to contradict. When our netas and bureaucracy defaced the police in India, many took a sadistic pleasure from it. The best example in independent India of wanton demoralising of the police took place in Kerala state which ushered in the ‘fifties the world’s first democratic communist government (an anachronism to the concept of communism). It is true that the Congress government hunted the early communist leaders down cruelly. And,

when the communists got the powers their first government led by EMS Namboordiripad was to declare the police their ‘class enemy’ and humiliate them in a vengeful mood. Then onward hatred begot hatred and there had never been a stop to it. Elsewhere, the corrupting of police began with ‘people’s representatives’ strutting about as new ‘Firangis’ who demanded slavish service from the uniform. For this who but the Congress could be blamed? Look at the way we treat IPS officers. There may be some black-sheep but my experience has been that an overwhelming majority of young IPS officers come with a zeal for justice but find themselves hands and foot bound and the semi-literate netas (many of who face criminal charges) trampling on them. Police then think: why the hell? Why can’t we please the masters and make hay while Indian sun shines ? Well, rest is history. Why go far? Look at Hyderabad. Every day on an average 4-5 crime against women, most of them domestic violence, are reported (Heaven knows how many unreported) and what do we get to see? Even women police SIs making a trade in human mystery at CCS where dowry cases are probed. What more tragic result do we need?

The whole rot emerges from the unwieldy, unworkable system of governance we adopted from the British. Our leaders at that time, eager to seize power, had never been accused of clairvoyance. They adopted a system that was a joke on the hungry millions: one man one vote — and see the result! Recall the words of a true leader, Winston Churchill By now famous prophecy of Churchill ought to be printed in golden letters and hung on every public place India today. When Clement Attlee, Prime Minister of United Kingdom, in June 1947, introduced the Indian Independence Act in the British Parliament, Sir Winston Churchill, war time prime minister of England, argued:“... Power will go to the

hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air and water... would be taxed in India.” What a deadly forecast! He had the foresight to look beyond his nose but our leaders did not have that. Solution Recast the parliamentary system and go to American model of Presidential system, bring in a simple constitution that is based on justice for all, nor for some. May the New Year and the tragic Delhi rape infuse a sense of duty in us.

ndhra Pradesh government ought to get its act together or the State is in danger of losing its pre-eminence in both politics and industry. The unprecedented power crisis, despite its rich coal deposits and gas, and its inability to solve the Telangana tangle threaten to pull the state back to several years. While the power crisis will drive away industry and steal Hyderabad’s hard-earned status as second most important IT hub of Asia, the political T-tussle will displace it from the national scene of politics. Whether it was the formation of NDA or UPA, it was the AP political parties that proved decisive. But with Telangana issue assuming a Babel Tower, it is not before AP lost its high pedestal in India politics. It is not the chief minister alone who is responsible to upkeep the state’s status and stature, the ruling party bosses and the major opposition parties too have roles that they must play without delay. Power situation is certainly in the hands of the government while the Telangana issue is with the Centre. Both are ruled by one party, therefore, no excuses.

workplace BYE BYE BLUES

POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

M

onday morning blues is something that we all are familiar with. Facing that dreaded boss or colleague, that mountainous pile of pending work or the mere thought of counting hours till you punch out is enough for most employees to think of absenteeism, thus affecting workplace productivity and individual performance. For any company the mental and physical well-being of their employee is essential to guarantee a productive workplace and for this many have resorted to wellness programs in some way or the other. Though most companies in the West concentrate on the holistic well-being of their companies, here in India a small number of corporate firms have caught with this trend and slowly are propagating it as well. Kavita Rathod, a Mumbai-based personal enhancement coach and corporate trainer, tells us, “ In India, at the organisational level, the importance of wellness is in its nascent stages. But on an individual level most people are already into it, as spiritual and mental health is part of our traditions.”About four years ago Pranit Bhatia, owner of a pharmaceutical supplier firm in Delhi, had about 50 employees under him. He noticed that most of his employees were calling in sick regularly and stress levels were running high. In order to bring about a balance he announced cash incentives for the person who turned out to be the fittest by the end of the year and for those who managed to quit smoking. Surprisingly, the stats improved by the end of the year. “Stress is what is affecting the workplace of today. The rat race, the competition all draws it out of you. Only if an employee understands their self to be effective can they truly be productive. Wellness affects various aspects of a person’s life, however, emotional and mental wellness is what is important for health. Only then can the other aspects also thrive,” explains Kavita. Sharath Saxena, employee of a popular software firm, shares how the wellness programmes at his workplace have helped make work a better place.” At our firm we have regular health awareness camps that keep employees updated with their health status. Employees are also encouraged to participate in monthly sporting activities or take the stairs. We also have lifestyle consultants come and talk to us.”

Fitness trends to follow

Come New Year and fitness is on everyone’s mind, what with the zillions of ‘must-lose-weight’ resolutions. Here are a few fitness trends that are bound to create waves in 2013. STAY SUSPENDED Who doesn’t love to try out something new? And suspension training seems to be that new regime that most people want to give a shot. Besides, it is a good option for functional training. According to healthmeup.com, suspension training allows the body to train as a whole instead of focusing on individual body parts. In this regime, an individual hangs from straps that are secured to the ceiling or wall and workouts are executed by using the full body weight. According to trainers this form of training leads to a stronger core, enhanced balance, improved flexibility and strong muscles.

As the male or female embryo grows, breast tissue cells develop on the chest wall and so we are all born with breast tissue. Sometimes this is very noticeable — newborn babies will be sensitive to the effects of their mothers hormones, which can cause them to have obvious swollen breasts or lumps, even a tiny amount of milk production, but this should soon settle. In men, a small amount of breast tissue is normal.

The colour of your hair determines how many you have. Blonde people have about 1,40,000, brunettes about 1,08,000 and redheads only 90,000. Hair grows more quickly during the night. Dark hair grows at a greater speed than blonde hair.

Kissing really spreads 'mono' disease

Deep kissing increases the risk of spreading a viral disease called 'mono' or ‘kissing disease,’ a new study has found. NEW YORK: Researchers followed 546 college students in the US from freshman to senior year and found the only factor that increased the risk for catching mono was deep kissing. Symptoms of the "kissing disease" include sore throat, fatigue, headache, fever

Researchers tested all the students' blood for antibodies against the Epstein– Barr virus. About 63 per cent of the students tested positive for the antibodies, meaning they had mono in the past. The remainder, 143 students, visited the

toms when they got mono. Students with mono were sick for an average of 17 days, but were capable of spreading the virus for much longer - about 5 months, the report said. Beat arthritis with daily exercise LONDON: Millions of people suffering from arthritis can beat it with regular exercise and early treatment, a research has found. Physical activity can reduce the risk of disability and ease the pain of a range of conditions including arthritis, back pain and brittle bone disease, Daily Express reported. A review of scientific research found that for some, the level of improvement increases with the number of exercise sessions. A second study also hails the benefits of aggressive, early treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The chances of disability could be significantly reduced when drugs, which can halt the disease's destructive process, are started soon after it begins. "We know that exercise is one of the best things you can do if you have arthritis or a musculoskeletal complaint. People should keep moving as much as they can and exercise to the best of their ability," said Jane Tadman, a spokeswoman for Arthritis Research UK. "The current accepted way of treating rheumatoid arthritis is aggressive, early treatment to get the disease under control before the joints become damaged and deformed." Drugs can prevent the immune system from attacking the joints. But the longer the disease persists, the less likely it will respond to treatment, according to the research published in the journal Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Experts at the National Resource Centre for Rehabilitation in Rheumatology in Norway found that exercise therapy for bone and muscle conditions had clear medical benefits. IANS

013 is going to be a promising year for Telugu film industry. Almost every big star has at least one major release before the year ends. First among the films to watch out for is Ram Charan’s upcoming film Nayak and then there’s Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu starrer Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. Both the films have been luring the fans of the respective stars and it promises to be an epic clash at box office this Sankranthi. Films starring actors like Ram, Prabhas and Siddharth are slated for release in late January and early February. Starting from the last week of March, there are going to be plenty of films starring Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, NTR, Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Venkatesh and many others who’ll be testing their luck at box office. 2012 had been a glorious year for Telugu cinema and if the success rate continues in 2013 as well, it’ll be a year to remember for everyone. The only reason of concern is the enormous budget which each of these films boasts of and producers of all these films will have to really slug it out to get the best possible release over the span of next few months. The game is on.

But every actor is an attention-seeker. It is an occupational hazard for us. If I don’t seek attention, I will not be doing my work well,” Anushka said. In a short span of four years, Anushka has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood and the 24-year-old says she wants to use her success to do things on her own terms. “You should use success as a way of doing your work in a better way. I want to be successful to be able to do things on my own terms. You should use your stardom and success to be able to pull people into the theatre. That’s what I would want to do with my success,” Anushka said. Asked what her mantra to survive in the industry is, she said: “Do your work and mind your own business; that is the only way.” Anushka admits she wasn’t sure about the film industry before she joined it, but her views changed once she became a part of it. “I used to think it is a dirty field because of these news channels playing dumb stories. But now I feel that when you get a lot here, you need to give back equally too. So whoever is the biggest star right now is working that much harder,” she said.

ctor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is gearing up to work on a second biopic End of Bandit Queen - based on the life of Sher Singh Rana, prime accused in the murder of bandit-turnedpolitician Phoolan Devi in 2001. “I will start shooting for this biopic film in March 2013. KAKURO How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

QUICK CROSSWORD enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

The 23rd Bond film crossed this milestone on December 30, with Sony vice chairman Jeff Blake saying, “To see a film connect with audiences is always gratifying, but the success of this film is nothing short of extraordinary. After 50 years of entertaining audiences all over the world, Skyfall is the most successful James Bond film of all time.” Skyfall is the third film released in 2012 to earn more than one billion dollars; The Avengers ($1.51 billion) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) crossed the magic mark earlier this year. NEW ZEALAND IN SOUTH AFRICA

Proteas to stamp status

COLIN BRYDEN Agence France-Presse

CAPE TOWN: South Africa will seek to consolidate their top place on the world Test rankings when they play New Zealand in a two-match series starting at Newlands on Wednesday. The series shapes up as a mismatch, with eighth-ranked New Zealand hit by injuries and the withdrawal of former captain and star batsman Ross Taylor, but coach Gary Kirsten said the South Africans would not take victory for granted. Kirsten said South Africa wanted to start a busy year of Test cricket on a strong note after capturing and then retaining the number one spot with successive away series wins against England and Australia. New Zealand are likely to rely on a handful of top players, with captain Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson their key batsmen. South Africa have an injury concern over new ball bowler

SRI LANKA IN AUSTRALIA

Lanka need face-saver ROBERT SMITH Agence France-Presse SYDNEY: Australia are eyeing a series sweep over battered Sri Lanka in the third Test starting in Sydney on Thursday overshadowed by the death of Tony Greig and marking the end of Mike Hussey's (right) prolific career. Michael Clarke's Australians swept Sri Lanka aside by an innings and 201 runs to win the second Test inside three days in Melbourne and seal the series after a comprehensive win in the first Test. The Lions have lost talismanic batsman Kumar Sangakkara with a fractured finger and have other injury issues, adding to an uphill task as Sri Lanka chase their first ever Test win Down Under at the 13th attempt. Given the gulf between the third-ranked Australians and Sri Lanka, ranked number six, the chances of an against-the-odds win appear remote as Australia build towards their tour of India, starting next month. Sri Lanka's efforts for redemption come as the cricket

world mourns the death of former England captain and broadcaster Greig from a heart attack at the age of 66 in Sydney on Saturday. Sangakkara said Greig had been a champion of Sri Lankan cricket. "Tony Greig in Sri Lanka will be very fondly remembered for embracing Sri Lankan players," Sangakkara said.

BRISBANE: Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur's (right) miserable Australian form continued on Monday when she was knocked out of the first round of the Brisbane International by Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson. Arvidsson took full advantage of 48 unforced errors from the Australian number one to win 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 on Pat Rafter Arena. Stosur, who grew up on the nearby Gold Coast, has struggled to live up to expectations when playing in her home tournament and has not made it past

BRIEFS Monfils back with new hopes

DOHA: Gael Monfils (left), the flying Frenchman with the flamboyant style and maverick theatrical tendencies, makes a comeback Tuesday which could hint at whether he still has the potential for major titles. The 26-year-old Switzerland-based Parisian won three Grand Slam titles as a junior and at times looked good enough to repeat that at senior level but in the last seven months has only been able to play eight competitive matches. Monfils has also fallen from a world ranking of seven to 77 following a year and a half's continual knee problems.

Mexican Olympic medalist shot in head MEXICO CITY: Noe Hernandez, a Mexican who won the silver medal in race walking at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, lost his left eye and was in serious condition Monday after being shot in the head in a bar, reports said. Carlos Castillo Rangel, the surgeon who treated Hernandez, was quoted as saying that the 34-year-old ex-athlete was in "very serious" but stable condition after being hit in the left, frontal area of his head.

SYSTEM OVERHAUL

Cricket rot needs stemming Even as the Indian team is on its last legs, the BCCI has no time for taking stock, busy as they are at the bourses. The new powerhouse of cricket makes the old order dance to its tunes, sliding down in the process. SRINIVAS SETTY

SYED SHOAIB shoaib.s@postnoon.com

I

t was waiting to happen. It was just a question of time. Even as the Indian Test team was on its last legs, the men who control cricket in India had no time for taking stock, busy as they were at the bourses. The cash registers were continuously ringing. India, had become the El Dorado for all comers, including stars of yore who had shunned India during their playing days were coming to our land in droves, willing to coach even a small state team, not to mention an IPL team. The new powerhouse of world cricket made the old order ones dance to its tunes. They had taken over as the bullies in world cricket and the ICC was reduced to BCCI’s hand-maiden. Successes of the sophomores, the Under 19 World Cup victory for example, made them vainer and lulled them into feeling that they could do no wrong. There was no time to strategise, to look ahead. There is little doubt that India’s talent pool is humongous considering the popularity of the game in the country. The challenge is to take this success to the next level – particularly Test cricket, the real cricket. No doubt we have in BCCI one of the best administered sports bodies, the world over. BCCI’s current hegemony has been aided no end by the masses of our country’s love for cricket coupled with the declining interest for the game in countries like England and West Indies. However, sadly, the best administered body has not taken time to step back and look at the talent pipeline and convert the precocious talent coming forth into hardened men who can withstand the rigours of a five day Test match. The last 18 months has seen Indian cricket touch its lowest point in more than four decades. And this after attaining the No 1 position in Tests makes it very sad. The drubbing at the hands of England and Australia followed by the recent humiliation at home should shake up BCCI into action. The time has now come- to think long term. Will the administrators and selectors respond? Can Dhoni do a Border? Australia was in a similar situation post Packer and following the exit of the Chappells, Dennis Lillee, Geoff Marsh and the vacuum that came about in

the wake of their retirement. Border stitched together a new team, right from scratch so much so that they were billed underdogs against India in the 1985-86 series at home, down under. India is in a similar state now. Border built the new team with talented young legs such as Steve Waugh, David Boon, Craig McDermott, followed by Mark Waugh and Ian Healy who in due course formed the core of the Aussie renaissance, an initiation, which has continued to flourish for close to two decades now. Virat Kohli has the guts and gumption of a Steve Waugh. Gautam Gambhir, if made part of the think tank, can be India’s boon. Cheteshwar Pujara is the kind of cricketer any captain would love to have. In Umesh Yadav, Dhoni has a McDermott. Now is the time for India to send their talented greenhorns to the pack of wolves and see which of them emerge strong. The likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Harmeet Singh, Unmukt Chand and Muralidharen Gautam have in them talent that could make them world beaters, if developed with care. Even the forgotten prodigious talent of Ambati

Rayudu can be a part of this build-up. Dhoni should be given the mandate by the selectors of being aggressive. India could lose a little more in the initial process of the build-up, but that is okay because it is from the hot kitchen that hardened steel will emerge. Spin talents should be carefully nurtured as they tend to fall by the wayside or become defensive tending to bowl flat with the increased T20 games. IPL is good for providing financial stability to a budding cricketer but robs the talent in him. More so, if he is a spinner. This is the care we got

to take when we blood talents like Harmeet. Dhoni should be the leader of this pack but should be given a free hand. I stress this because the cry of Dhoni’s head has already begun. Selectors should encourage the team to be aggressive not just in terms of pumping up and that sort of body language but making Dhoni and the youngsters pick up the gauntlet whenever there is a chance. Though not in the way Dhoni threw in the towel and settled for a draw, as the reigning No 1 team, against a lowly West Indies team last year requiring 80-odd BCCI

runs in 15 overs with 5 wickets in hand did. A defeatist mind-set that would have made the best leaders such as Taylor, Ponting or Imran squirm. But how do we expect the senior team to possess killer instinct when the youngsters in domestic cricket do not wish to go through the grind? Aggression and killer instinct should get internalised at a very early stage in a cricketer’s life. The absence of these virtues was brought out in a recent Ranji Trophy game when Mumbai having a lead of 305 runs against Saurashtra in an important game for them did not enforce the follow-on but chose to bat out the possible 50 overs. We need to summarily condemn such approach or attitude. Making Saurashtra bat again, would have given the Mumbai bowlers a real match situation to squeeze out a victory from a draw and for the Saurashtra batsmen to fight for a draw getting the best efforts from all going up to the wire. It is here that the administration should step in decisively to curb these defeatist make up with an iron hand. So many ways BCCI can turn a new page. But are the powers-that-be of Indian cricket listening?

PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW

Mancini has hopes aplenty Has set his sights on still being in touch with United. MANCHESTER, UK: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini (right) believes the league table is irrelevant until February, ahead of his side's home game with Stoke City on New Year's Day. City head into Tuesday's match with Stoke seven points behind West Bromwich Albion Vs Fulham leaders Man (18:15GMT) United after both Manchester City Vs Stoke City teams secured vic(20:30GMT) tories on Saturday. Swansea City Vs Aston Villa Mancini's side (20:30GMT) lost two of four league matches, including a defeat by United, in December. But they responded to a surprise 1-0 loss at Sunderland to pick up a 4-3 win at Norwich City that was all the more impressive due to an early red card for Samir Nasri. Ever since the 3-2 loss to United, Mancini has maintained that, with half of the season remaining, there is no need to panic and that Alex Ferguson's team's Champions League commitments will affect them in the new year. His task is set to grow even harder, with Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure departing for the Africa Cup of Nations after the FA Cup tie with Watford on Saturday. AFP

versial red card in the Premier League champions' 4-3 win against Norwich. Nasri was sent off in the first half at Carrow Road on Saturday for appear-

ing to head-butt Norwich defender Sebastien Bassong. However, there was minimal conAFP tact between the players.
