t the prestigious world CoP conference that began in the City today, the first citizen and head of the city, the mayor, was missing. In any city in the world, convention demands that the mayor plays host and welcomes guests; apparently not in Hyderabad though. Mayor Mohd Majid Hussain was conspicuous by his absence at the inaugural ceremony of CoP-11. His aides said he was at home. The mayor, according to world mayors’ council, “is the highest-ranking officer in the municipal government of a town or a large urban city”. In any big city,

fter months of wait, the Convention on Biological Diversity finally took off in the City today, with over 1,500 delegates from all over the world convening at HICC for the sixth meeting of the CoP MoP. The plenary meeting commenced with the representative of Japan and president of CoP MoP Masamichi Saigo declaring open the sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and invited the host country, India, to chair the current meeting. Representing India, Union minister for environment and forests Jayanthi Natarajan, welcomed the delegates to this “historic first meeting in the UN decade of Biodiversity”. In her welcome message, Natarajan highlighted significant accom-

O

n the first day of CoP-11, mediapersons accredited to cover the world event were made to stand around the reception area in HICC. Neither the organisers nor the police made any effort to guide the press. Too many policemen, untrained to handle as varied an audience as at a world CBD event, were overreactive, checking and frisking and asking questions. But they had no idea how to guide the delegates and mediapersons to the scores of venues of meetings. As the Conference of Parties on Biodiversity began, it was clear that neither the police security force nor the PR management agency had coordinated with each other. The first sign of trouble began at the parking lot, where the media vehicles and other visitors were asked to park in a muddy ground adjacent to the Security Command Point at

the entrance of HITEX, and not at Shilparamam or Shikpakalavedika. Journalists and other visitors were forced to park their vehicles in the mud and were put

through security checks overseen by police from the AP State Police and the Cyberabad division, both of whom lacked the basic courtesy to greet people

and address their problems. On the other hand, managers were seen putting up wall coverings, heating up food, and generally being busy with a hundred

things, which spoke volumes about the ‘preparedness’. There was no guidance or route maps indicating the way to the Media Centre. The drivers of the shuttle services meant for the use of the media were not informed of the route plans and dropped the visitors off at random points, causing a lot of confusion. There was no presence of scouts or guides as promised by the Cyberabad police division. Most of the police posted along the roads leading up to the venue themselves were not aware of where to guide the people and the visitors to. K Govardhan Reddy, a senior police officer from the APSP, said, “We cannot be blamed for the shuttle services or the route maps as the UN security has been in charge of all the planning.” Furthermore, the confusion over possessing two kinds of media cards — one, the media permit and two, the HICC main venue permit — further caused more problems.

They were yet again arrested and moved to Shamshabad police station. Violence erupted at the Osmania University after proTelangana students clashed with the police when they were pre-

They claimed, this was in spite of students making fervent appeal to the police with folded hands to permit them to march towards the official venue. Contrary to this, City police chief Anurag Sharma, who was personally overseeing the security arrangements, made it clear that they might have given permission for T-March near the Necklace Road, but no permission was granted for rallies or dharnas in any parts of Hyderabad. More than 2.50 lakh people (according to commissioner of police Anurag Sarma) who converged at Necklace Road were glued to the speech of T-JAC chairman Prof Kodandaram. When the Professor wanted to know from the protestors whether they were prepared to sit at the venue even after facing problems, the huge crowd roared in approval. The presence of former minister and Congress MLA K Venkat Reddy and Telangana Nagara Samithi leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy cheered the crowd.

Congress MP G Vivek attacked the State for trying to ensure that the march was a failure and condemned the highhandedness of the police in trying to prevent Telangana supporters from attending the march. “The march was a grand success despite the attempts of the State government to ensure its failure. The police attacked T-supporters and fired at them. But all their attempts went in

KODANDARAM CRITICISED

Differences between TJAC and the Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS) came to a fore over the organisation of the march. TRS leader V Prakash faulted the decision of Prof Kodandaram to extend the meeting after the permitted time of 7pm. “He should not have taken the decision of extending the meeting. It was a wrong decision, especially if you take the ugly surroundings of Hussain Sagar into consideration. Anybody who visits Sagar and spends some time there would catch a cold immediately,” he said.

City braces for CoP meet Post the Telangana march, the City takes stock of losses and damages as it gets set for the CoP that began today.

Hyderabad City, hosting the world biodiversity meet totally ignored the bandh call today. The MMTS services have been cancelled for the day. “All trains (general) are functioning as per schedule. While TJAC and Congress leaders termed it a “historic success”, a section of TRS leaders faulted the decision of TJAC chairman Prof Kodandaram to extend the timing of the march.

he Centre, not known for political sagacity, has however succeeded in thrusting a wedge between the TRS patriarch KCR and T-JAC leader Kodandaram, events prove. The Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (T-JAC)’s protest march yesterday saw a total absence of top TRS leaders like Rao, his nephew and MLA Harish Rao, daughter and woman leader of TRS Kavitha Rao, his son and MLA T Rama Rao. Only two known faces of TRS — Etela Rajender and party MLA J Krishna Rao — made a brief speech at the protest spot. All the TRS MLAs left the venue even before the government deadline of 7pm got over. This development has led to wide speculations that the Tmovement is slowly slipping from the hands of TRS president KCR and careening towards the T-JAC. CAROL HUANG Agence France-Presse BEIJING: When Wu Rui's 12year-old daughter died she lost not just the only child she would ever have but also her source of security and support in old age. Today the 55-year-old takes care of herself and her own elderly parents on a paltry pension in a ramshackle two-room home, living in fear of medical emergencies she has no way to pay for. China's one-child policy normally leaves four grandparents and two parents relying on a single caretaker for old age — and bereaved families with none. That would mean more than 10 million couples outliving their only child in the next two to three decades, minus a fraction who give birth again. AFP

ith the increase in smartphone penetration in the country, the businesses are trying to exploit the smartness of the devices for a range of promotional activities. The QR codes are increasingly used by businesses in various marketing activities. “They provide a convenient one-step process for directing users to a website, phone number, directions, promotions video or other information. The marketer can set goals for his campaign and design their codes to achieve them,” says Bhaskar Anand, MD and CEO, MavenClickZ “There are humongous benefits that QR code creates to businesses across the segments. For instance, a consultant’s business card contains a QR code that links to a landing page with enthusiastic client testimonials. This creates confidence among the potential clients about the authenticity of the business or he can have a QR code for VCard to download contact information of the business,” he explains. “It is also a branding tool for businesses and can be immensely exploited in retail platform. For instance, a company can have an advertisement with QR code in supermarkets. The new product samples can be distributed to the people, who scan QR codes. This helps businesses to reach its target customers rather than spending heavily on various media platforms during their product launch,” says Y Ravindranath, CEO, myvirtualplaza.com “QR codes are eco-friendly. Businesses can make more efficient use of printed materials and reduce waste. Rather than giving all the information in the brochure by printing more number of pages, the QR codes can be used as extension of brochure to online for more relevant information, thereby reducing the

Iran has exported 15 million tonnes of iron ore worth over $600 million, despite Western sanctions against the country, a media report said Sunday. China is a major buyer of Iran's iron ore. Other countries include Pakistan, Austria, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, India and Vietnam. Iran has produced 23,218,093 tonnes of iron ore in the first 10 months of 2011, the ISNA news agency reported. Iran has been subjected to a series of economic sanctions after it refused to stop its nuclear programme, which Western nations believe is meant to produce atomic weapons.Tehran has rejected that view and said its nuclear programme is to produce electricity.

BHUBANESWAR: Dissident BJD leader Pyari Mohan Mohapatra has launched the Odisha Jana Morcha, a political forum to establish internal democracy in the state’s ruling party, a forum leader said Monday. “The forum will work to establish internal democracy and protect the rights of the workers in the party,” Morcha spokesperson Jagneswar Babu told IANS. Mohapatra, who is a Rajya Sabha member, has been Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s nonofficial advisor for over a decade. He was suspended from the party after he allegedly plotted a political coup to unseat Patnaik from power. The move had forced Patnaik to return from

Britain where he had gone on an official tour. Mohapatra will announce more details about the new forum on October 19, said Babu, adding that the new outfit is a forum inside the BJD and will work for greater democracy within. While opposition parties see the development as an outcome of the infighting in ruling BJD, a senior BJD leader said the forum will not have any impact on the popularity of the BJD. “If he (Mohapatra) has launched the forum to help the people of the state, it is welcome,” state Congress president Niranjan Patnaik said. “The formation of a morcha within the BJD demonstrates that not all is well in the ruling party.” IANS

aime Vendera can break wine glasses with his raw voice, but the US-based vocal coach doesn’t consider himself special and gives credit to years of hard work for achieving the unique skill. “I don’t feel special. I have been taught to do this. One of my friends, Jim Gillette of rock band Nitro, used to break wine glasses with the help of the amplifier and he was the one who taught me to do this,” Vendera, 42, said. He has been playing professionally since the age of 16. Vendera is today a world-famous glass-shattering and voice-strengthening expert, who has an unusual approach to vocal training. His training allows a singer to unlock his or her voice by creating a variety of primal sounds and unleash the power of vocal resonance and projection.

“About 8-10 years ago, he (Gillette) called me and asked: ‘Do you want to be on TV?’ I asked him: ‘What do you want me to do’? He said: ‘I want you to break wine glasses’,” recalled Vendera. “I was scared out of my mind because I wasn’t special. But he taught me and I did the show. It was Mythbusters (2005) for the Discovery Channel. I performed there with other professionals and when the showmakers measured my voice, it was much louder than other competitors. “They said they wanted to see me try and break the wine glass without the amplifier. So I practiced and I did it. I set the world record. I have been practicing through a lot of vocal exercises,” said Vendera, a former construction worker. He said he used to take glasses to his job site and practice there by screaming at them. Jaime has now become a professional vocal coach and has been training rockers Kevin Rudolf, Dream Theater band’s James LaBrie, Matt Devine of band Kill Hannah, Clayton Stroope of band Thriving Ivory among others. “I’m also a vocal coach. But glass breaking is fun. I love doing it. I have done dozens of TV shows. It helps me travel all over the world,” he said. IANS

India car sales soar but where are the roads? More cars pose big problems for India, which lacks a modern road and highway network and where air pollution in some cities is already sky-high. PENNY MACRAE feedback@postnoon.com

E

ven with its economy cooling, India’s car sales are forecast to go into overdrive, creating a huge challenge for the government to modernise the country’s antiquated road network. The shift toward vehicle ownership in the country of 1.2 billion people has reached a tipping point, driven by increasingly urban, affluent and aspirational first-time buyers, according to global research firm LMC Automotive. Many millions “are crossing the wealth threshold to the stage they can afford cars”, said Pete Kelly, managing director of LMC Automotive UK, adding “shortterm variations in economic growth aren’t likely to get in the way”. LMC projected light vehicle sales — cars, sport utility vehi-

THE SHIFT TOWARD VEHICLE OWNERSHIP IN THE COUNTRY OF 1.2 BILLION PEOPLE HAS REACHED A TIPPING POINT, DRIVEN BY INCREASINGLY URBAN, AFFLUENT AND ASPIRATIONAL FIRST-TIME BUYERS. cles and light trucks — will quadruple to 11 million units by 2020 from 2.7 million in 2010, in a paper presented at an automotive conference in New Delhi in September. The forecast surge comes as global automakers have been betting big on Asia’s thirdlargest economy, spending billions of dollars on plant investments, as they aim to offset saturated Western markets. “The fundamentals are here, the potential is here — we have to be here,” John Chacko, chief

India representative of Germany’s Volkswagen Group, told AFP on the sidelines of the conference. Right now, just 11 Indians per 1,000 own cars compared with more than 500 per 1,000 in the United States, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. “Buying a car is not just transport but a status symbol — it shows your neighbours you’ve entered car-driving society. It’s a sign you’ve arrived,” Buvneesh Bedi, a sales executive at a Japanese showroom, told AFP. But more cars pose big problems for India, which lacks a modern road and highway network and where air pollution in some cities is already sky-high. Bullock carts, cows, bicycles and rickshaws frequently compete for space with hulking SUVs, cars and trucks on India’s potholed streets and highways. The traffic mayhem has given India the unenviable claim

to having among the world’s most dangerous roads. Some 135,500 people died in 2010 in road accidents and 527,500 were injured, according to latest government figure. “Our cities were never built for a large number of cars,” Sarbojit Pal, a fellow at India’s Energy and Resources Institute, told AFP. “What’s required is a lot more planning, a lot more investment from government and private players.” But India’s abilities to meet the challenges are in doubt. The government set a target in 2009 of building 20 kilometres of highways a day, but a parliamentary panel in March called the goal a “distant dream” with the pace of construction being just 10 kilometres. “The National Highways Authority is not in a position to complete any project... within the scheduled period, although financing has not been an issue. It is adding project after project without achieving the targets,” the panel said. India last month opened a new six-lane, 165-kilometre highway halving travel time between New Delhi and Agra, home to the Taj Mahal — the nation’s famed monument to love. The project, however, took nine years to finish. The government aims to spend nearly $1 trillion to upgrade India’s shabby roads, airports and ports and other infrastructure over the next five years.

UNENVIABLE RECORD The traffic mayhem has given India the unenviable claim to having among the world’s most dangerous roads. Some 135,500 people died in 2010 in road accidents and 527,500 were injured, according to latest government figure. A top priority should be creating more public transport, said Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director of India’s Centre for Science and Environment. “Even if people buy cars, they need other options to using them,” she told AFP. “Otherwise, car growth will be unsustainable from a health, pollution level, traffic fumes and liveability aspect. Road congestion will be unbearable.” Even with worries mounting about India’s “infrastructure deficit”, car buyers are unlikely to be fazed by the bumpy road ahead, said Roychowdhury. “We’re at the take-off stage,” she said. Sunil Kumar, 24, is a typical first-time buyer. Now a bank customer relations manager and about to marry, Kumar said he can finally afford to trade in his motorcycle for a small car — India’s hottestselling segment that makes up 70 per cent of the market. “It’s a great feeling to be able to buy a car,” he said as he gripped the steering wheel of a shiny new hatchback in a Delhi auto showroom. WILL TABLES TURN?

It’s do or die for Mitt

Experts believe that Wednesday’s debate will be the acid test for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, as his campaign lies in tatters. STEPHEN COLLINSON LAS VEGAS: US President Barack Obama Sunday set the table for his first debate with Mitt Romney (right), billing the clash as about security for hard working Americans, not who could fire off the best “zingers.” Obama heaped pressure on his foe, who is angling for a dramatic turnaround for his ailing campaign in Wednesday’s showdown, before bunkering down in a resort in Nevada’s rocky desert to shake off his mothballed debating skills. “The media is speculating already on who is going to have

the best zingers ... who’s going to put the most points on the board,” Obama told a floodlit rally of 11,000 people at dusk in a Hispanic suburb of Las Vegas. Romney’s vice presidential pick Paul Ryan admitted to “some missteps” after Romney’s nightmare month in the White House race, and sought to moderate expectations, saying no debate would “make or break” the campaign. Obama is “a very gifted speaker,” Ryan said. “The man’s been on the national stage for many years. He’s an experienced debater.”

nd so it begins. The grand ol’ CoP is finally here, and after the rubber pullets have been swept up off the streets, it will be business as usual. The CoP in itself is a thinlyveiled façade. Most of the major decisions, or lack thereof, have been taken long before the delegates landed at RGIA. These conferences are all about backroom powwows, the seminars are merely to give a platform to those the world tends to ignore the rest of the time. Hyderabad had nearly 18 months to prepare for the event, and we were still pulling up our trousers when the guests arrived. Even the beautification of the city has been haphazard. What I would like to know is how many of these lovely plants will remain post-CoP? How many will die just so that a few environmentalists and politicos could feel good about themselves? What I want to know is what’s been the carbon footprint of the event with its jet-setting guest-list? But it’s a near certainty that we never will. While most major events are used by a country’s citizenry to protest causes it wants in the limelight, the CoP has thus far only been used by the Telangana agitators. Where are the social activists pounding the pavements demanding change? Where are the homegrown environmentalists demanding more green space in the City? Where indeed. Behind closed doors the CoP might succeed to some extent. But on the streets around the venue a social battle still rages, and no one’s sticking up for the victims.

“T

he current abysmal situation of the world and the bitter incidents of history are due mainly to the wrong management of the world and the selfproclaimed centers of power who have entrusted themselves to the devil...an arms race and intimidation by nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction by the hegemonic powers have become prevalent...Continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this bitter reality.” What’s with this guy? Bluster. Piety. Braggadocio. That’s how Ahmadinejad got elected in Iran – for two terms as president. A man of the people. Speaking their values. Making Iranians feel better about the misery he and the ruling clerics have brought to them. The sanctions have bitten and bitten deep. Iran’s oil exports have plunged from 2+ million barrels per day to slightly less than 1 million. The rial has plunged in value. It now takes 26,500 rials to buy a dollar.

A year ago, it was half that amount. Domestic inflation and hardship have followed. Of course, Ahmadinejad is not the figure he once was. He is still president, but the so-called “supreme leader” has “clipped his wings.” Ahmadinejad has been relegated to being in charge of the domestic economy – a challenge in which he has failed. But it’s his boss who is responsible for the nuclear portfolio and foreign relations. More to the point, Ahmadinejad is a lame duck. His second and final term ends in June 2013. No doubt the forces that be will insure the election of another hardliner. But this time it will be a hardliner with some “class” – a hardliner you can talk to, probably one who was educated in the United States. With the now expected reelection of President Obama and Iran’s new president, meaningful negotiations are likely to follow. That is, if Israel doesn’t bomb before then. The good news here is that Israeli public opinion has shifted against Netanyahu-Barak’s ‘bomb now’ campaign. Israelis have been asking what the most important relationship is to insure the future of Israel’s security – Israel-Iran or Israel-U.S. It’s the latter they know is the most important. With Obama’s reelection

more likely than ever, Israel will have to deal with him for another four years. Better not to cross him now – certainly not before the election. An Israel driven “October surprise” has become ever more remote. So in the end, relations with Iran and with Israel hinge on the outcome of the US election. David Axelrod, chief campaign strategist for Obama, says that polls show that Obama is now ahead in the 9 key swing states that will bring the President the 270 electoral votes he needs to be reelected. Nate Silvers’ FiveThirtyEight New York Times blog, the most accurate of the pundits in 2008, predicts Obama winning with 312 electoral votes.

Both the Iranians and the Israelis have seen these polls. They follow them as closely as they follow their own politics. Their conclusion – Obama here today and here tomorrow. They are going to have to deal with him. With a clear mandate for another four years, they expect him to be tougher than ever. They know they need to accommodate to that. And they probably will. EDITORIALS The million-rupee question Why we love comeback stories

“H

ow will members of a new party be selected, where the money will come from and how will candidates for elections be selected among others?”Anna Hazare has a point here when he asked the above mentioned question to the pro-party group led by Arvind Kejriwal. The answer to the first one: the usual practice of parties that hold any traction is to let any citizen become a member, but if you need to rise up the ranks quick or be in the ranks from the moment you become a party member is to be “special”, special defined as being kin of the party chief or a businessman who has lots to spare for the welfare of the party. The money? That’s one of the greatest puzzles of modern politics. Only God knows where our leaders get the means to go about in flashy AC cars and SUVs. Only He knows the source of the money that flows during election time. And who gets to contest? The special ones, of course.

INTERSTITIAL FIBROSIS

19

The pain of being alive

Interstitial fibrosis is a disease so debilitating, even breathing and performing basic chores is a task. Experts point out that it could be due to various factors like pollution and smoking. RANJANI RAJENDRA

ranjani.r@postnoon.com

W

hen 34-year-old Archana was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, the family was at a loss. The mother of two, could now barely perform even basic tasks like eat. What had started as an episode of incessant coughing, now required her to use external oxygen supply. Life for Archana, had come to an impasse of sorts, with few treatments available.

PULMONARY FIBROSIS “The lungs are made up of soft, spongy tissues. When these tissues are irritated by factors like infections or long standing tuberculosis, too many blood cells start getting deposited here. These begin to react with the lung tissue which then begin to harden. The lung loses its elasticity and cannot participate in normal respiration. This condition is called pulmonary fibrosis,” explains Dr Gopi Krishna, consultant pulmonologist, Breathe Easy Lung Care.

CAUSES “Pulmonary fibrosis could be due to a viral infection, autoimmune disease or could be idiopathic. In some cases, it could also be due to smoking and occupational hazards,” explains Dr AGK Gokhale, consultant cardiothoracic, transplant and minimal access surgeon at Yashoda Hospital,

Secunderabad. He adds that pulmonary fibrosis typically affects around six to eight per cent of Indians, although not advanced in everyone. It affects people in the age group of 35 to 45.

TREATMENT “Pulmonary fibrosis leaves the lung tissue scarred. While there is no 100 per cent treatment, treatment is usually symptomatic. Medication is prescribed to alleviate symptoms troubling a patient. One other alternative is a lung transplant, where the dis-

Symptoms n n n n n

eased lung is removed and a healthy lung from either a human or a pig is transplanted into the patient. Very few such procedures are performed in our country,” says Dr Gopi Krishna, adding that it is only possible to know if such a procedure has been successful a year after it has taken place. “A lung transplant is a high risk surgery. The window period is less, with the healthy lung having to be transplanted within six to seven hours of being harvested. Apart from matching the donor’s gender and blood group, one must note if the donor is around the same age as the patient,” says Dr Gokhale.

Cherries lower gout attacks by a third

New virus strains expected in flu season

Findings from this research also suggest that the risk of gout flare-ups was 75 per cent lower when cherry intake was combined with allopurinol. WASHINGTON: Patients with gout who consumed cherries over a two-day period showed a 35 per cent lower risk of gout attacks, as compared to those who did not eat the fruit. Findings from this research project also suggest that the risk of gout flare-ups was 75 per cent lower when cherry intake was combined with the uricacid reducing drug, allopurinol. Previous research reports that 8.3 million adults in the US suffer from gout, an inflammatory arthritis triggered by a crystallization of uric acid within the joints that causes excruciating pain and swelling, the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism reports. While there are many treatment options available, gout patients continue to be bur-

he first symptom of gout ( gouty arthritis) is the sudden onset of a hot, red, swollen joint. The joint at the base of the big toe is the most common joint where it may occur. Here the swelling can be associated with severe tenderness. Apart from this any other of the joints can also be involved such as the knee, ankle, and small joints of the hands. For this particular study, Yuqing Zhang, professor of medicine and public health at Boston University and colleagues recruited 633 gout patients who were followed online for one year. Fear of water is not very common and is often seen as a refusal to bathe or get into the swimming pool among young children. However, even that is not a fear of water and is more to do with disliking or being uncomfortable with it.

ast year's flu season was the mildest on record, with record-low hospitalisations and a short season overall, USA Today reported. But that was largely because the flu strains in circulation last year were similar to those in 2010. That's not the case this year. Experts say two new strains of influenza have begun circling the globe, and one of them is much harsher than other flu strains, Fox News reported. "People cannot become complacent this year," Dr Howard Koh, assistant secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, told Fox News. The flu season typically begins as early as October and can last through May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the 2009-10 season, thousands of people were hospitalized and many died in one of the biggest flu pandemics in recent history. Vaccine shortages were also reported in some areas. But health officials told CBS News there are more than enough flu shots to go around this year and urged everyone to get vaccinated. GLOBAL POST

‘MY CHILD IS EXTREMELY SCARED OF WATER’ It is unusual for a child to suffer from a fear of water without a history of a bad experience with water. The fear of water is called aquaphobia which is almost always acquired due to a bad experience. It is a persistent and abnormal fear of water, where the person does not feel in control of the fear and it often inter-

feres with daily life. This fear is experienced in spite of knowing that there is no imminent threat and often all activities related to water are avoided or endured with distress. A child might avoid water in the form of bathing, swimming, or being near a lake or ocean, and often appears fearful and anxious when faced with water. As a result, person-

al hygiene suffers because of the aversion to bathing. Unfortunately, talking to the child about this does not help as this fear involves anxiety that needs to be treated. Anxiety disorders are treatable. A child counsellor or therapist will be able to assess exactly what is going on and will be able to help. Using play therapy and helping the child under-

stand the fear, while teaching the parents and the ways to overcome the fear will be the focus. Assignments might involve things like playing with water, getting a child involved in water oriented games etc. The writer is a counselling psychologist at the Hyderabad Academy of Psychology. LEGACY OF A PATHBREAKING FILM

21

The film that shook the industry

It's been two years since Rajinikanth’s Robo released. And the film still holds the record for being the biggest grossing South Indian film. It doesn’t stop here. The film’s legacy goes beyond the realm of numbers. HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

T

hey say that rules of physics don’t apply to a Rajinikanth’s film and the adrenaline rush of watching his films is beyond description. Two years ago when his film Robo, the Telugu version of Endhiran, released, there were plenty of questions over its potential to recover the humongous budget which touched nearly `130 crores. Moreover, sci-fi is one of the least explored genres in Indian cinema. According to Sun Pictures, which produced the film, the film managed to make a profit of nearly `40 crores. However, the film’s legacy goes beyond the realm of numbers at box office. For the first time in Indian cinema history, Legacy Effects, one of the most prominent special effects studios in the world, worked on Robo. Till then, Indian filmmakers working closely with studios based in Hollywood was a rarity. Later, the same studio worked on A R Murugadoss’ Seventh Sense and now Soundarya Rajinikanth announced that Stereo D, a US based company which specialises in conversion from 2D to 3D, is going to work on Rajinikanth’s

Kochadaiyaan. There was absolutely no dearth of resources to promote Robo, especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and rest of India. SUN TV, owned by Kalanidhi Maran, launched a publicity blitzkrieg at an unprecedented scale in Tamil Nadu. Perhaps, it was the first time that theatre owners in Tamil Nadu sold tickets to let people watch the film’s trailer on the big screen! The film’s audio was launched in a grand ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which later became a trend in Kollywood. The film later went on to win the National Award for special effects and art direction in 2010. The film’s climax, in particular, became a topic of hot discussion on the Internet. Films like Robo, which boast of best of the actors, technicians and budgets, come once in a decade. There’s still a section of audience that would say that it’s more of a Shankar’s film than that of Rajinikanth. Whatever the case maybe, the film is a mash up of almost everything one can expect from a team like this. It has set the bar high for South Indian films, both in terms of technology and the dazzling heights of fame it has achieved. Now, that’s a record that might be just too hard to break for most stars.

Personally it is a great feeling, because in my entire career, Aurangzeb is a film, which I auditioned for. KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

THE MIRACLE AT MEDINAH

Rampant Europe produced the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history to reel in the United States and retain the trophy at Medinah Country Club on Sunday.

ALLAN KELLY Agencie France-Presse CHICAGO: Trailing by 10-6 going into the closing 12 singles, Jose Maria Olazabal's men from Europe thrillingly won the first five matches out and went on to make sure of victory when Martin Kaymer downed Steve Stricker 1 up in the penultimate match. He clinched it with a six-foot putt at the last, 21 years after his fellow German Bernard Langer missed from a similar distance to hand victory to the United States at Kiawah Island. That gave the Europeans the 14 points they needed to make sure of keeping the small, golden trophy for another two years, and then minutes later Tiger Woods missed a four-footer at 18 against Francesco Molinari to hand overall victory to Europe 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. "This is indescribable," Kaymer said. "I was so nervous in the last two or three holes. Olazabal came up to me on the 16th and told me we needed my point to win the Ryder Cup. I loved that feeling. Loved it. Jose Maria Olazabal's outgunned team were left with the mammoth task of winning eight out of the 12 singles to put the overall match score at 14-14, thus ensuring Europe retained the cup as holders. TWENTY20 WORLD CUP

India, Australia win as semis race hots up

Having got the better of arch rivals Pakistan, India will also have to beat South Africa in Tuesday’s second match to remain in the hunt. KULDIP LAL Agencie France-Presse COLOMBO: India crushed arch-rivals Pakistan and Australia put on another Shane Watson show as the race to the World Twenty20 semi-finals heated up on Sunday. Virat Kohli hit an unbeaten 78 off 61 balls as India, who would have been knocked out had they lost, bowled out Pakistan for 128 and then surpassed the modest target in 17 overs with eight wickets in hand. Australia also defeated South Africa by the same margin in the first match of the double-header, after Watson claimed 2-29 and smashed 70 off 47 balls to win his fourth successive man-of-the match award.

Australia restricted the Proteas to 146-5 and won by the 18th over to record their second win in a row in group two, but will still need to beat Pakistan on Tuesday to make the semi-finals. Australia lead the group with four points, India and Pakistan have two each, while South Africa have lost both matches so far. A sell-out crowd of 35,000 at the Premadasa stadium, including Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, saw India continue their stranglehold on Pakistan in major world meets.

Pakistan have never beaten India in either the 50-over World Cup or the World Twenty20, in which they contested a thrilling final in 2007. India lost Gautam Gambhir off the second ball of the innings, offering a tame return catch to 20-year-old left-arm spinner Raza Hasan, but Kohli and Virender Sehwag denied Pakistan another immediate break. Kohli put on 74 for the second wicket with Sehwag and 54 for the unbroken third with cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh, who

followed his two wickets and a run out in Pakistan’s innings with 19 not out. The impressive win was set up by the bowlers as seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji claimed three wickets and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took two to leave Pakistan in tatters after they elected to bat. Shoaib Malik top-scored with 28, but only one other batsman managed to touch 20 in the face of steady bowling by the Indians. “We did not think too far ahead,” said Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. “I always felt that if you are desperate for a win you put more pressure on yourself.” Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez praised Kohli’s matchwinning innings on what he said was a difficult pitch to bat on. “Kohli was excellent,” said Hafeez.

Kohli taking responsibilities: Dhoni COLOMBO: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni lauded Virat Kohli (right) for leading the team to a eight-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan in a crucial Super Eights match of the World Tweny20 at the Premedasa Stadium here on Sunday. Kohli struck 78 off 61 balls as India achieved the target of 129 losing two wickets and 18 balls to spare. The win helped India maintain an all-win record over their neighbours in a World Cup.

Dhoni said the team was relaxed ahead of the high-voltage clash. “The players looked relaxed, we knew there was something in store. It’s good that Kohli is taking the responsibility, Viru batted well, though we lost Gambhir early. I always felt that if you are desperate for a win you put more pressure on yourself. We didn’t think too far ahead of ourselves. Thanks to the crowd for showing up,” he said. Man of the Match Kohli said the

idea was to stay calm. “The key is to stay as calm as possible. In the last game I thought a bit too much. The idea it to play 10-15 overs and the team benefits from it. It’s a slow wicket but better under lights. God has been kind,” he said. Pakistan captain Mohammed Hafeez said lack of partnerships did the team in. “We just didn’t get the partnerships. It was a difficult pitch,” he said. IANS

Briton arrested over ticket theft COLOMBO: A British man was arrested in Colombo on Sunday on a charge of stealing 100 tickets for the World Twenty20 match between hosts Sri Lanka and defending champions England, police said. The 54-year-old man identified as Caesar Antonio Buller from Manchester was taken into custody at a ticket booth in the capital after sales staff alerted the police, an official said. “He had gone up in the queue for tickets and somehow pocketed the ticket books that were on a counter,” police spokesman Ajith Rohana told AFP. “We found four ticket books in his possession.” He said each book had 25 tickets for Monday’s game. Some were priced at `250 ($1.9) and the others were `750 ($5.7) each. Rohana said the British national had also in his possession three other tickets which he may have purchased at the same ticket sales unit. “We will take him before a magistrate tomorrow and take further legal action,” Rohana said. It was the first case of ticket theft for the Twenty20 tournament. AFP

RONALDO HAT-TRICK KEEPS REAL IN THE HUNT Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid kept on the trail of leaders Barcelona with a 5-1 rout of Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday. The visitors took a shock lead after 15 minutes through Riki but Madrid quickly bounced back.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PREVIEW

Barça keep eye on Europe Coach Tito Vilanova feels the European game is at least as important as the El Clasico. LISBON: Barcelona prepare for their Champions League clash away to Benfica on Tuesday with one eye on the El Clasico next weekend but coach Tito Vilanova feels the European game is at least as important. When Vilanova took over the helm from Pep Guardiola in the summer his target was not just to bring La Liga title back to Camp Nou but also the European crown which they have won twice in the last four years. Barcelona could not have started better in La Liga with six straight wins while they also made a victorious start to their European campaign with a tight 3-2 win over Spartak Moscow in their Group G

Evra wants the killer instinct back Evra warns Man United stars to turn up in ‘vampire country’. CLUJ-NAPOCA, ROMANIA: Patrice Evra has warned Manchester United’s stars to rediscover their killer instinct or risk humiliation in Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Romanian minnows CFR Cluj. United travel to Transylvania, the supposedly vampire-filled setting of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, for their second Group H fixture on the back of a disappointing 3-2 home defeat against Tottenham on Saturday that left them four points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea. “The game is 90 minutes long and we deserved to lose because we only played for 45. To concede three goals at Old Trafford is not good enough,” Evra said. “I hope it was just an accident and we can get back the winning mentality.” United were knocked out at the group stage of the Champions League last season after underestimating supposedly inferior opponents. Cluj shocked Braga with a 2-0 win in their opening group fixture.

Torres needs no rest

The Chelsea striker says there is no need for him to be rested for the trip to FC Nordsjaelland on Tuesday. TOM WILLIAMS Agencie France-Presse COPENHAGEN: Chelsea striker Fernando Torres says there is no need for him to be rested for the European champions’ trip to Champions League newcomers FC Nordsjaelland on Tuesday. The Spain international scored the opening goal as Chelsea won 2-1 at London rivals Arsenal on Saturday to galvanise their grip on top spot in the Premier League. With injuries having restricted Daniel Sturridge to just four substitute appearances this season and Didier Drogba having left the club in the summer, Torres has had to shoulder the goalscoring burden alone. The former Liverpool man is the only player to have started every one of the club’s games this season, but he told Chelsea TV that he has enough gas for the trip to Denmark. “I’ve been resting last season too many games, so I’m fresh now,” said the 28-year-old, who has scored five goals in 10 appearances this season. “I’m feeling good and now we have a very important game against a great team. It’s an important game for us in the Champions League because we didn’t start with the three points.” Chelsea began their Group E

campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Italian champions Juventus, a game in which Brazilian starlet Oscar announced his arrival at Stamford Bridge with a brace of goals. The London club, who are bidding to become the first side to successfully defend a Champions League title, will expect to take all three points from Tuesday’s game. However, they failed to win any of their away games in the group phase last season and coach Roberto Di Matteo knows that their opponents will be extremely motivated. “It is their first home game in the Champions League and any away game is difficult,” the Italian said. “Ideally now, we need to win.” Sturridge has missed Chelsea’s last four games with a hamstring problem but if judged fit, he could come into the starting XI at the expense of Torres.

We are only just starting and now we face a Benfica side which has done well in the Champions League.” Despite their 100 per cent domestic record, Barca have still had difficulties in both the league and in Europe where they have struggled to come out on top.
