‘To let’ board kindles hope in the loner who treks the lanes and bylanes to find a living space. Within minutes, it is shattered, as the owners bluntly refuse to let out their premises to bachelors. Facing rejection, these bachelors, mostly IT professionals are forced to find alternate places such as hostels, and service apartments, which burn a hole in their pockets as they need to shell out at least Rs 18,000 a month towards rent. The landlords set ground rules, even for unmarried girls, who come to the City for work. Usually the rules are very stringent like timing of coming in and going out, visitors, use of water, etc.

What is worse is that the tenants are asked if they are “vegetarian or non-vegetarian”, which implies whether they belong to a particular caste.

“Before I rented my flat, my landlord asked me a series of questions including what caste I belonged to. Later I was told that I am not allowed to bring any girl into my home and told that I can’t drink inside the flat or come home late. As I had a time crunch, I had to agree,” said a student Sharath Chandra, who is currently looking out for alternate “less stricter” accommodation. NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a notice to former Andhra Pradesh governor ND Tiwari on a plea by a 32-year-old man, who claims to be his biological son, against its earlier order that the Congress leader cannot be compelled to give his blood samples for DNA test. Taking note of the plea filed by Rohit Shekhar, a bench of acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw issued a notice to Tiwari seeking his reply by January 19. Shekhar came in appeal before the division bench against the single judge order, saying, “The single judge failed to satisfactorily deal with the high-handed and dismissive conduct of Tiwari, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.”

“The bench had failed to consider if 85-year-old Tiwari is not compelled to submit his blood sample in compliance with the court’s earlier order, it would be difficult for him (the petitioner) to get justice,” states Shekhar’s petition. “Referring to the court’s remark in its Sep 23 order that Tiwari’s failure in giving his blood sample for DNA test may lead to an adverse inference against him, while deciding the paternity suit,” it said. “The court also failed to appreciate that an adverse inference can never have the same effect as a conclusive scientific determination of paternity,” Shekhar submitted, adding, “With each passing day, the possibility of getting justice is fading out on account of the apprehension of a very critical evidence being lost forever.” In her order, Justice Gita Mittal had ruled: “Tiwari cannot be physically compelled or confined for submitting his blood sample for DNA profiling to implement its December 2010 judgement.” She had also said that his persistent refusal can lead to the presumption that he is Shekhar’s father. The court’s order had come on Tiwari’s plea challenging the December 23, 2010, order of the high court which had asked him to give his blood sample for DNA test.

It’s turning out to be a harassment of a different kind with ticket less travellers virtually holding women TTE to ransom. “I will jump of the running train if you book me,” threatened a ticket less middle aged men as a women TTE asked him to produce a ticket. Woman TTEs also face trouble from drunken passengers, anti-social elements and those gambling on the trains. “From the moment I enter a train till the completion of my duty I face at least two such cases and it has become a part of my duty,” says Kavita Reddy, a woman TTE working with South Central Railways. Though the male TTEs also face similar trouble, they manage to pull up the miscreants and handover them to the police at the next station. Women TTEs however have been kind not to file a complaints and this has become an excuse for antisocial elements to create more trouble on the running train. Strangely enough the co-passengers remains mute spectator and don’t come to the support of the women TTEs. Its an open secret that people drink during journeys especially in southern regions. The harassment that a TTE has to endure is of various types. “In a way, dealing with

We can’t question them as guards keep changing from station to station or after a certain distance in the journey. They even turn up in an inebriated condition. Some of the GRP catch hold of passengers chewing gutka, drinking or commuters travelling without a ticket and extort money up to Rs3,000. They don’t spare those who are travelling with emergency tickets issued by TTEs. They accuse them of travelling with fake ticket and swindle money. “Recently I encountered a group of people drinking on the running train. When I reminded them that drinking is banned during travel, one of them cleverly said ‘Madam! Can’t you see we are drinking soft drinks.’ When I retorted and raised my pitch they unleashed a torrent of verbal abuse. Meanwhile, another started saying ‘Why don’t you mind your work? You are supposed to check tickets and now that we have showed ours, you may move onto other carriages,’” she added.

Lead actors shine

amuthirakani’s latest film Sangharshana is about two friends with a dark past who come to Hyderabad to lead a new life. Sasikumar and Allari Naresh play the lead roles in this film which is a dubbed version of a Tamil film titled Poraali. Sasikumar and Allari Naresh render brilliant performances in their respective roles and there are several instances throughout the film where almost everyone shines in

Music by Sundar C Babu is a let down. The film’s plot gets confusing as it unfolds. After a good hour or so, the twist is revealed and most part of the second half is spent revealing about the protagonists’ past. It’s hard to figure out what the director wants to say and there are too many subplots in the film which drive our attention away from the main theme of the film. Watch it if you must for the lead actors’ performances.

Muslim groups spied on by FBI US Rights activists accuse FBI of hiding under cover to invade community’s privacy NEW YORK: The FBI has spied and compiled information on Muslim community groups under the cover of holding outreach meetings with their representatives, a US rights organization said on Thursday. The American Civil Liberties Union issued a report saying the Federal Bureau of Investigation had overstepped its authority and was violating the trust of groups that agreed to meet law enforcement officers. The report was based on government documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. “The FBI has been illegally using its community outreach programs to secretly collect and store information about activi-

HYDERABAD: Cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines has hit another air-pocket with many airports asking the airline operator to pay and then fly. The GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) threatened the airline to clear the dues of Rs. 90 crore or else move to cash and carry mode from Saturday. The airline will have to pay Rs. 60 lakh a day from Saturday, if doesn’t clear the dues. It is learnt that GMR-led Delhi and Hyderabad International Airp-

Anti-corruption body cuts ties with Fifa

ife for 19-year-old Ramadevi was idyllic. She was married to a wonderful man with in-laws who thought the world of him, their only son. For Rama, life was a rosy picture filled with the promise of a bright future as she took on her new role as a wife and daughter-in-law. But then tragedy struck when her husband suddenly took ill and tests revealed that he was HIV positive. “Everything was going fine, but soon my husband began falling ill frequently. What really alarmed us was when he had a TB attack. We took him to a private hospital where they conducted a battery of tests to investigate. It was during the course of this that we discovered that my husband was HIV positive. The doctors asked me to get tested gtoo but my results turned up negative,’ says this Guntur resident. All of this was 12 years ago. At the time though there was nobody to counsel them or even inform them that the virus could spread through sexual contact. The couple continued leading a normal marital life, unaware that this was putting Rama’s life at risk as well. While life as a couple didn’t change much for them as a married couple, what changed was the family’s attitude towards them.

“My husband was an only child and was muchloved. But when his family learnt of his health they reacted rather negatively and began avoiding him. This affected his psyche quite a bit. The man who loved going out, now began to stay home for fear of social stigma. After all his own parents had shunned him,” says Rama, now 31-years-old. Unable to bear the stigma, her husband soon passed away, leaving Rama behind to look after their 3year-old son. “His death left me very disturbed. Until then I didn’t

think I could be HIV positive too. But after watching a few television advertisements, I realised how the virus actually spread, and the fact that I probably had it too. I didn’t even have the courage to go get myself tested for HIV. Besides, I kept thinking that I’d die like my husband did and my son would be left all alone,” explains Rama. This continued till a doctor, visiting their town as part of a leprosy and Aids awareness campaign, paid her a visit and convinced her to take the test. “I tested posi-

tive. Thankfully, for me the doctor counselled my and family and me and convinced us that there were a lot of people with HIV who still lead full lives and there was no reason why I couldn’t do the same. I also began attending support group meets and hearing others share their experience also gave me the courage to lead a normal life,” she says. The one thought that kept troubling her was that is she had access to the right information when her husband had been diagnosed with HIV, she could have protected herself. “Now I am actively working towards spreading awareness about HIV. My family is also very supportive of me now, that they have also been made aware and counselled about HIV,” says Rama who now works with an organisation that works towards checking the spread of HIV and offers free testing and counselling to affected people. Rama’s 15-year-old son, however, does not know about his mother’s health. “Thankfully, he didn’t face any trouble at school either because of my being HIV positive. He is now in class X and I would like him to become a doctor. But he has other plans. He wants to become an engineer. Well, whatever pleases him works for me,” she smiles.

Burning more sugar drives super athleticism WASHINGTON: Muscle fitness drives super athleticism, especially when their cells efficiently utilise sugar as a fuel source, a study reveals. Conversely, exercising improves the muscle’s ability to take up sugar from the bloodstream and burn it for energy. On the flip side, conditions that reduce physical activity, such as obesity, reduce the muscle’s capacity to burn sugar. A new study from SanfordBurnham Medical Research Institute unravels a mechanism that re-programmes metabolic genes in muscles to boost their capacity to use sugar, the journal Genes & Development reported. “Essentially, these transgenic mice are capable of storing and burning sugars at rates usually only seen in a trained athlete,” said researcher Daniel P Kelly.

ot only are working mothers multitasking more frequently than working fathers, but their multitasking experience is more negative as well, according to a new study in the December issue of the American Sociological Review. “Gender differences in multitasking are not only a matter of quantity but, more importantly, quality,” said Shira Offer, the lead author of the study and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. “Our findings provide support for the popular notion that women are the ultimate multitaskers and suggest that the emotional experience of multitasking is very different for mothers and fathers.” The study found that working mothers spend about 10 more hours per week multitasking than do working fathers, 48.3 hours per week for moms compared to 38.9 for dads. “This suggests that working mothers are doing two activities at once more than twofifths of the time they are awake, while working fathers

But the authors said an even bigger issue than the time discrepancy is the difference in the way multitasking makes working mothers and fathers feel. “There is a considerable disparity in the quality of the multitasking experience for working moms and dads,” Offer said. “For mothers, multitasking is — on the whole — a negative experience. Only mothers report negative emotions and feeling stressed and conflicted when they multitask at home and in public settings. By contrast, multitasking in these contexts is a positive experience for fathers.” The Offer-Schneider study relies on data from the 500 Family Study, a multi-method investigation of how middleclass families balance family and work experiences. The 500 Family Study collected comprehensive information from 1999 to 2000 on families living in eight urban and suburban communities across the United States. Most parents in the 500 Family Study are highly educated, employed in professional occupations, and work, on average, longer hours and report higher earnings than do middle-class families in other nationally representative samples. Although the 500 Family Study is not a representative sample of families in the United States, it reflects one of the most time pressured segments of the population. The Offer-Schneider study uses a subsample of 368 mothers and 241 fathers in dual-earner families from the 500 Family Study. According to Offer and Schneider, their study shows that at least some of the difference in the way multitasking makes working mothers and fathers feel is related to the types of activities they perform.

rain differences might help explain psychopaths’ cold, calculated and often antisocial behaviour, and perhaps even point out better ways to treat or prevent the disorder, a study of Wisconsin prison inmates suggests. Compared with a group of 13 non-psychopathic criminals, a group of 14 psychopaths had weaker connections between an area near the front of the brain called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, or vmPFC, and the amygdale, a pair of almond-shaped structures deep in the brain. Earlier studies have hinted that this particular link is important for emotional regulation and aggression. Neuroscientist Michael Koenigs of the University of Wisconsin–Madison and colleagues discovered the weaker connection by taking a mobile brain scanner to a medium-security prison. Psychopaths are overrepresented in prison populations thanks to their lack of empathy and tendency toward antisocial behaviour. After interviewing inmates and scrutinising their disciplinary records to determine whether they were psychopaths, the scientists conducted two kinds of brain scans. The first measured the strength of brain connections called white matter tracts, which are bundles of nerves that serve as information super-

Champagne is a region in France where sparkling wine is made. So only if it comes from Champagne, can it be called by the same name. about you. People generally think me to be a very sweet person but what they don't know is that I can be stubborn and high-handed when I get angry. I am also very lazy, I can just spend my whole day watching television. I love food and contrary to popular belief that models don't eat, you will see me eating all the time and I have a fascination for sweets and I need to eat one every day. I have been independent for a long time now and don't give in easily to anyone or anything.

It started off as a hobby. At that time, I did not have a model figure, but my mother's friend who writes for a Bengali paper asked me to pose for some pictures for the paper. I had no intentions of getting into the profession until this photoshoot happened. I finished the shoot in two hours and I got to wear make-up and good clothes. At that time I was studying for MBBS and had aspirations of becoming a doctor, but then I realised doctors never stop studying!

He is the brother of Nandini Reddy, the director of the famous movie Ala Modalaindi. Born to Roopa Reddy and Bharat Reddy, Uttam spent most part of his life with his mother. He says, “I lived for 12 years with my grandmother, and then with my mother. My parents were separated, and my mother worked hard to bring us up.” There is a sense of pride in his eyes, when he tells us, “Thirty years ago, my mother owned a chain of ice cream parlours. It was quite amazing to see a single woman work hard in those days, when it was still a taboo being a single mother.” Interestingly, Uttam never wanted to be in the food business, but it was a chance encounter that made him become the name behind Rayalaseema Ruchulu. He tells us, “Four of my friends started Rayalaseema Ruchulu in Masab Tank, a couple of years ago. Then one of them had to leave the business as he was going away to another country, so I pitched in to support them. And before I knew, all my partners had to break out of the business for various reasons. And now, I run the show — and life couldn’t be better!” Uttam is married to Geetanjali Reddy, who is one of the city’s most sought-after wedding planners. Asked about his childhood, Uttam is at first reluctant to talk about it. We wonder why, but soon realise that his childhood was full of naughty experiences. “I was an

absolute brat in school. There were lots of fights with my friends, and of course, that meant taking home a lot of complaints. My sister and I too have had our share of petty fights, but as we grew up, we did not get to meet as often to continue our fights,” he reveals, laughing. Uttam needless to say is very proud of his sister’s success. He tells us, “It is an absolute clean movie, with no vulgarity, and sleaze whatsoever. So it had to be a hit, and I am the happiest brother to see that happen.” On his marriage to Geetanjali, Uttam says, “Geetanjali is a Goan, and ours was an arranged marriage.” This took us by surprise. He then goes on to explain, “My sister Nandini, got my profile registered on a matrimonial website, and started to hunt for prospects for me! And she liked Geetanjali when she saw her profile, and the rest is history. Geetanjali is also very busy with her work, but we managed a vacation to Bali a few months ago — it gave us that much needed break.” He adds, “Geetanjali does a lot of major wedding decors, events and stage planning in the city.” During their free time, the couple enjoys catching up with friends, and listening to old Hindi songs. Uttam also loves to do yoga and go for walks.

ife Geetanjali tells us more about her meeting with Uttam. “Ours was an arranged-comelove marriage. We spoke for almost two months before we met, the day he came to Goa for the first time his flight was delayed for six hours. Travelling is another passion we share and we have been to Europe, the Middle East, Bali etc. We also enjoy water sports.” On her husband she says, “Uttam is a very understanding and supportive husband. He has always been there for me. On the work front, I would say that he is calm and composed and rarely does he get flustered over anything and he has excellent organisational skills.” Nandini, Uttam’s sister is busy with her movies currently, but the minute we asked her about her brother, Nandini is all chatty. She tells us, “As I am the elder one, I always bullied him. Thankfully for him, it is not the case anymore. As a kid, I remember him saving up on the monopoly money. He also used to take money from our mother’s purse without her knowing, and relend it to her! Uttam is a self-made man today, and he makes me proud.” She then reveals a secret, “There are also a few sequences in my movie that were inspired by him. Uttam was always worried about getting bald. I incorporated this emotion in a scene where a doctor is telling the hero that it is not really too late, and maybe, there is a cure. The audience is left wondering what illness the hero has, and then suddenly the doctor tells him ‘It’s okay man, it happens to everyone, and hair-fall issues are not as bad as they are projected!’ That particular scene had the audience in splits and Uttam got to know that it was inspired by him, though only much later.”

Living in a Varun Sandesh has had a roller coaster ride over the past four years, both in his personal and professional life. The actor opens up about his career in a candid chat

t’s been four years since Varun Sandesh made his debut in films and considering the types of films he has been part of over the years, one might say that he has done a fine job. “Acting is a dream come true for me and I do agree that it’s been a roller coaster ride but the important part is that I am living in a dream world,” he says. After he got a chance in Sekhar Kammula’s Happy Days he decided to pursue a career in acting rather than going to college. “I do miss that part of life, but I am more than glad that I live a different life here where I get to study life, people and work,” he says with a smile. His American accent is intact when he talks and it’s hard to spot any other emotion on his face except for a perennial smile. “I am a happy-go-lucky guy. There was a time when I hardly cared about anything, but I guess I have matured a little now,” he explains. We ask him if the success or failure of his films bothers him, after all that is what determines the longevity of an actor. “I can’t determine the fate of my films. All I can do is give my 100 per cent while doing the job and leave the rest to the audience to decide,” he replies and adds, “Every day is a new learning experience for me. I believe that success is measured by the effort I put in.” So, doesn’t criticism affect him? “My father is my biggest critic. Compared to what he has to say about my performances, I must say that the critics have been quite friendly,” he chuckles. We remind him that he’s often criticised for his accent while delivering the dialogues but he seems unperturbed. “I think I have improved a lot on that front. In fact, my father saw my new film Priyudu, recently and he told me that my diction has improved a lot and also that it’s my best performance till date,” he confesses.

My father is my biggest critic. Compared to what he has to say about my performances, I must say that the critics have been quite friendly. This year, two of his films had released and only one of them, Brahmigadi Katha managed to rake in some money at box office. His new film, Priyudu is yet another love story. “It’s funny because almost every filmmaker who approaches me has a love story in mind. I can’t wait for a dream role, so I end up choosing what I find intriguing. I loved the way Shravan, the director of the film, narrated the story to me. The film is a love story of a guy who believes that love is a waste of time and energy. It’s a treatmentbased film and a complete entertainer,” says Varun. He has already begun shooting for Neelakanta’s upcoming film titled Chammak Challo and another film, which will be directed by Nandyala Ravi will go on floors in January, 2012. “I just want to keep trying to do a better job. These days, I feel quite bored when I am not shooting. My family is my biggest strength and thanks to them, I love my work and life way too much to be bogged down by anything,” says the actor.

A Murugadoss and Fox Star Studios had produced the Tamil version and Suresh Kondeti is producing the Telugu version. Sathya has composed the music and Velraj is the cinematographer. The Tamil version had raked in about Rs20 crore and it was critically acclaimed as well. Although the film was being planned for release this weekend, Kondeti has decided to postpone the release by a couple of weeks to get more screens.

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
