‘DOUBLE GAME’ HAS TRS FUMING In a twist, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) today served Speaker N Mahohar with a notice for a no-confidence motion against the Kiran Reddy government. TRS leader KT Rama Rao and MLA Harish Rao handed over the notice to the Speaker. The TRS leaders alleged that the Telugu Desam Party led by Chandrababu Naidu was playing a “double game” by not really pushing ahead with the no-confidence motion. The TRS has 12 MLAs in the House.

Jagan MLAs in a fix over no-trust vote No-trust motion delayed as TD, TRS interests clash

he battle between Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and the TDP has put the Congress MLAs staying with YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy in a quandary. As the TDP has notified for moving a no-confidence motion against the government and the Kiran challenge to the Desam that the no-trust will be thrown out of the window by the House has made the life of Congress MLAs with Jagan miserable. It’s because when it comes to voting, the Congress will issue a whip and they can neither obey Jagan to vote for no-confidence nor could vote against it. Jagan has directed his supporters to vote against Kiran's government as they have been challenging the TDP to move the motion against Kiran. Jagan sup-

It is learnt that PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana, minister for health DL Ravindra Reddy and minister Shanker Rao have stepped up the strident criticism against the style of functioning of Kiran Reddy. There is also a buzz that Sridhar Babu was not consulted when the Rs1 kg rice was

announced . Both Botsa, and DL Ravindra have put the chief minister in an embarrassing situation during the Cabinet meeting, it is learnt. The chief minister was not prepared for such a situation. But regarding the no-confidence motion the Congress is geared up to face it and win it. This will make Kiran to sit firm in his position till the next elections. The only point of agreement is to defeat the no-confidence motion.

The group of eight is learnt to be on the lookout for unhappy Congress MLAs who could vote with the YSRC in case the no-confidence motion comes to voting. Their evening meeting will give a clear picture, sources said. The Assembly was adjourned twice today by 10am. First it was adjourned as TDP members rushed to the Well and demanded the Speaker to take up the no-confidence motion.

The Speaker adjourned the House immediately and later adjourned the House for about half-an-hour as the members did not co-operate with the Chair and the proceedings were disrupted. The TRS members want resolution on Telangana, while the TDP wants no-confidence motion to be taken up. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, on the other hand, came to the House after attending a meetng at Indira Park in memory of the late chief Minister Marri Chenna Reddy. City has no room for bachelors From refusing accommodation to singles, demanding to know a person’s caste to even refusing to rent their home on the basis of religious disparity, landlords in the City have a long list of specifications before they rent space to anybody D Sree Charan and Osama Salman feedback@postnoon.com

A

‘To let’ board kindles hope in the loner who treks the lanes and bylanes to find a living space. Within minutes, it is shattered, as the owners bluntly refuse to let out their premises to bachelors. Facing rejection, these bachelors, mostly IT professionals are forced to find alternate places such as hostels, and service apartments, which burn a hole in their pockets as they need to shell out at least Rs 18,000 a month towards rent. The landlords set ground rules, even for unmarried girls, who come to the City for work. Usually the rules are very stringent like timing of coming in and going out, visitors, use of water, etc.

What is worse is that the tenants are asked if they are “vegetarian or non-vegetarian”, which implies whether they belong to a particular caste.

“Before I rented my flat, my landlord asked me a series of questions including what caste I belonged to. Later I was told that I am not allowed to bring any girl into my home and told that I can’t drink inside the flat or come home late. As I had a time crunch, I had to agree,” said a student Sharath Chandra, who is currently looking out for alternate “less stricter” accommodation. Arun K had migrated to Hyderabad two and a half years ago. He stayed in the company accommodation until he had to recently change jobs. “After I changed my job, I had to look for a place to stay near Jubilee Hills. Being a bachelor, my landlord told me some crazy things that I was expected to follow, including not using more than two buckets of water, that I can’t have people staying over more than two

Court notice to ND Tiwari on paternity suit

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a notice to former Andhra Pradesh governor ND Tiwari on a plea by a 32-year-old man, who claims to be his biological son, against its earlier order that the Congress leader cannot be compelled to give his blood samples for DNA test. Taking note of the plea filed by Rohit Shekhar, a bench of acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw issued a notice to Tiwari seeking his reply by January 19. Shekhar came in appeal before the division bench against the single judge order, saying, “The single judge failed to satisfactorily deal with the high-handed and dismissive conduct of Tiwari, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.”

“The bench had failed to consider if 85-year-old Tiwari is not compelled to submit his blood sample in compliance with the court’s earlier order, it would be difficult for him (the petitioner) to get justice,” states Shekhar’s petition. “Referring to the court’s remark in its Sep 23 order that Tiwari’s failure in giving his blood sample for DNA test may lead to an adverse inference against him, while deciding the paternity suit,” it said. “The court also failed to appreciate that an adverse inference can never have the same effect as a conclusive scientific determination of paternity,” Shekhar submitted, adding, “With each passing day, the possibility of getting justice is fading out on account of the apprehension of a very critical evidence being lost forever.” In her order, Justice Gita Mittal had ruled: “Tiwari cannot be physically compelled or confined for submitting his blood sample for DNA profiling to implement its December 2010 judgement.” She had also said that his persistent refusal can lead to the presumption that he is Shekhar’s father. The court’s order had come on Tiwari’s plea challenging the December 23, 2010, order of the high court which had asked him to give his blood sample for DNA test.

days. It makes me feel as if I am living in a school’s hostel,” he said. “The general perception of not renting homes to bachelors is that they don’t keep it clean. They assume that they get into fights and inconvenience the neighbours, get friends home, drink and play cards. Sometimes, landlords think that bachelors harass female neighbours. On the other hand, single women will find it much easier,” said Keerthi Mahesh Kumar, a real estate agent for Space Matters Real Estate Agency. The only ‘bachelor-friendly’ areas are Madhapur, Hitech City and Ameerpet, largely due to the young IT crowd that lives here. The central areas, on the other hand, are not welcoming. spread, and deeply so. Secularism is merely just a word. If you are of a certain religious community, you aren’t given any accommodation and told directly on the face that you are unwanted. “I was searching for apartments for my family in Shantinagar in Masab Tank. Whatever apartment we liked, we were thoroughly disappointed when we were told that since we don’t belong to their community,” said Mohammed Osman, a businessman in the City. “I have been told many-atimes, and that too on my face that I don’t belong to the landlord’s community and so I can’t stay there. This isn’t just confined only to a particular community. It can happen to anyone anywhere,” said Supreeth G. His search for apartments in Secunderabad is still on.

City girls ensnared in Web of sex and false promises

Not all escort agents are genuine

T

here are three ways how these agencies operate. In the first type, the agents really provide girls to the customers. The agent will finalise the deal with the client and then send a girl of his choice to them. After services are provided once the client pays the agreed amount to the girl, who in turn hands it over to the coordinator. Some agencies which work under the guise of escort services are fake which trap innocent customers and dupe them. The third type of agency work under the banner of maid services or escort services. They provide maids and as well as prostitutes.

And, another solicitor goes by the name Wet n Wild, while others opt for names like Apples on Heels, Diamond Kuttycats. Thus goes the world of open sex as advertised through the borderless media — Internet. With bewitching girls and beautiful housewives online, it’s raining business for the ‘escort service’ industry in the City. A number of clandestine escort services are operating in the twin cities with an estimated turnover of RS 30 lakh per day. The online sex market in Hyderabad is next only to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, with the average of the Hyderabad business going up considerably in the last 3-4 years. Even as the escort industry is thriving with

The rate depends on the girl they choose. Basically a girl with an oomph factor would be offered anywhere between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. We retain Rs 7,000 as commission and the rest would go to them,” Eshan adds. Banning bar dancing in Mumbai has come as a boon for most of the escort agencies. Ever since the bar dancing was banned, Hyderabad and Bangalore have become the new address for them. Most of them joined escort services, while some choose illegal bar dancing. Moreover, girls who were earlier employed at the many massage centres across the city have now teamed up with escort service agencies. This happened after the City police placed a ban on female to male massage services. omen organisations and NGOs in the city claim that most of the unidentified bodies of women found in the City outskirts are of escorts killed by clients. These bodies remain unidentified and cases unsolved. Now-a-days to avoid getting caught by the police, clients are taking the girls to their farm houses. Once the job is done, they either pay the girl or kill her. Several such cases go unregistered as the agent won’t lodge a missing complaint with the police fearing his own arrest. “They think as if they have bought her and can make her do as they please. Sometimes they have wild fantasies and indulge in sodomy or make videos of the act. At times they refuse to pay and threaten them. The escort is equally harassed by her agents if they don’t get the money,” said Sandhya, of a City NGO. Most of the housewives from well to do families are lured into the profession under promises of easy money. Once they are in they can’t get out of it for various reasons.

Rough ride for women TTEs

D Sree Charan

sreecharan@postnoon.com

It’s turning out to be a harassment of a different kind with ticket less travellers virtually holding women TTE to ransom. “I will jump of the running train if you book me,” threatened a ticket less middle aged men as a women TTE asked him to produce a ticket. Woman TTEs also face trouble from drunken passengers, anti-social elements and those gambling on the trains. “From the moment I enter a train till the completion of my duty I face at least two such cases and it has become a part of my duty,” says Kavita Reddy, a woman TTE working with South Central Railways. Though the male TTEs also face similar trouble, they manage to pull up the miscreants and handover them to the police at the next station. Women TTEs however have been kind not to file a complaints and this has become an excuse for antisocial elements to create more trouble on the running train. Strangely enough the co-passengers remains mute spectator and don’t come to the support of the women TTEs. Its an open secret that people drink during journeys especially in southern regions. The harassment that a TTE has to endure is of various types. “In a way, dealing with

Notorious routes n Vijayawada n Guntur n Mahbubnagar n Bellampally n Mancherial

Notorious trains n Goutami express n Narsapur express n Shimapuri express n Godavari express n Garib Rath express drunkards who threaten or abuse is somewhat easy when compared to a certain type of sentimental boozers. These emotionally weak people threaten to jump off the moving train when we ask them to show their ticket or to pay a penalty. We have to plead him to stay calm till the next station, and then hand him over to the railway police. They narrate his entire life story (including that he has two wives, who always fight with each other and then he needs more money to take care of his wives) and hardships till the next station arrives,” she said. The most distressing way to spend a train journey is to experience the bad behaviour of other passengers. At times these miscreants bother people and scare children for asking them not to create a nuisance. They pick fights and are usually drunk and disorderly. Owing to

these reasons, most of them turn a blind eye on such antisocial behaviour as they feel that once they confront them, they are stuck with them for the rest of their journey. Despite the presence of Government Railway Police, such behaviour on trains is still rife. “Sometimes the GRP who are supposed to be guarding the train go missing. We can’t question them as guards keep changing from station to station or after a certain distance in the journey. They even turn up in an inebriated condition. Some of the GRP catch hold of passengers chewing gutka, drinking or commuters travelling without a ticket and extort money up to Rs3,000. They don’t spare those who are travelling with emergency tickets issued by TTEs. They accuse them of travelling with fake ticket and swindle money. “Recently I encountered a group of people drinking on the running train. When I reminded them that drinking is banned during travel, one of them cleverly said ‘Madam! Can’t you see we are drinking soft drinks.’ When I retorted and raised my pitch they unleashed a torrent of verbal abuse. Meanwhile, another started saying ‘Why don’t you mind your work? You are supposed to check tickets and now that we have showed ours, you may move onto other carriages,’” she added.

ake a page out of your life’s book today. Is it legitimate? Or are you aping a journey that is based on the reality or illusion (trust me, it could be either) of another person’s whom you envy or admire? pounding. People are outraged, seduced, stumped and awed by

the sensuality of the idea. Why are we talking about this? Because Milan Luthria, the director, had the audacity to trust his own journey leaving half of Bollywood to slap their foreheads. “Sheesh! Why didn’t we think of that one?” Originality does not necessarily mean you have to try and fit into your teenage daughter’s clothes just because you are young at heart; it does not permit that you go to work looking like a skunk without make-up and slippers because you think you are cool; and if you are a

man, it does not warrant that you buy a Harley Davidson at 57 out of your retirement fund. English hypnotist and selfimprovement author, Paul McKenna says, “The map is not the territory”. What he means is that we interpret situations based on what we feel and whom we are at that point of time. So how we interpret things affect our state of mind, expressions and behaviours. It keeps us away from being true to our most important dreams and realising our potential. So, if you are feeling ‘old’ or

‘unattractive’ or like a ‘loser’ lately, stop and think. Maybe you are vaulting down the road with someone else’s illustrious and affluent map, without having that person’s originality, intellect, or talent. How can you succeed trying to imitate someone else’s journey? Try to take your own path to success. If you don’t know the path yet, create one. The territory lays ahead – your territory – and you can make up the map as you go along. (The author is a Communication Specialist.)

SR Kathir’s cinematography is top notch and he brings alive both the restlessness of characters as well as the rustic intensity in the flashback scenes.

Music by Sundar C Babu is a let down. The film’s plot gets confusing as it unfolds. After a good hour or so, the twist is revealed and most part of the second half is spent revealing about the protagonists’ past. It’s hard to figure out what the director wants to say and there are too many subplots in the film which drive our attention away from the main theme of the film. Watch it if you must for the lead actors’ performances.

Brave enough to be Silk Sana Mirza Sana.m@postnoon.com

he essayed the role of a sensuous widow, Krishna, in Ishqiya after which people termed her as ‘the bomb’. “Oh, I have been called many things. Sexy, hot, sensuous! But, then at the same time, people have also called me extremely brave. They said with The Dirty Picture, I have bought grace to sleaze,” she says with a smile. Vidya Balan seems to be conquering all sorts of preconceived notions that prevailed when the actress was just starting her career in Bollywood. She received critical acclaim for her role as Lalita in the movie

Parineeta, after which she was applauded for her roles in Paa and Ishqiya. She can now be spotted in the much hyped and most awaited film The Dirty Picture (TDP) which depicts the rise and fall of a sex siren in the 80’s and 90’s. So, was it easy to play the ultra sensuous role. “I have played different characters in different movies so it was not like I could carry an experience from my previous role. A certain amount of mental preparation went into playing this character. I had to look sleazy yet sexy, voluptuous yet graceful. Playing a character which was inspired by Silk is an honour,” she says. The actress also clears the air about the rumours going around that the film is a biopic

on Silk Smitha. She says, The character in the film is inspired by the real life character but it certainly isn’t about her life at all. The 80’s saw a lot of buxom and doe-eyed heroines like Nylon Nalini, Polyester Padmini, poor Cotton Kamakshi out of which Silk was the one who was most popular. She was a dancing sensation and was quite phenomenal,” she says. Talking about her second time co-star Naseeruddin Shah, she says, “It was unbelievable and I consider it a great honour to have had a chance to act with him again. He is such a versatile actor and a living legend. He plays a promiscuous South-Indian

City fans gather for a ‘Dirty’weekend Inkeshaf Ahmed

HYDERABAD: Amid high expectations and controversy, the much-discussed movie ‘The Dirty Picture’ reportedly based on the life of yesteryear South Indian actress and ‘sex bomb’Silk Smitha was released across the city today. The movie was released following the rejection by AP High Court a petition filed by the brother of Silk Smitha to stay the release. The movie is being screened in 17 theatres in Hyderabad which also include all major multiplexes. At many multiplexes in city, Cinegoers and female fans of Vidya Balan, who essays the lead role, showed enthusiasm to watch the movie on the first day. “ Iam a big fan of Vidya Balan. I came here to watch this movie on the first day itself. The controversy surrounding this movie has doubled my excitement,” says Sanjana Rashmi, a resident of Banjara Hills, who came to Cinemax in Jubilee Hills to catch the first show of the movie. Another movie buff Ravi, a software engi-

neer, who came all the way from Secunderabad to Cinemax has expressed a similar feeling. “ I like Vidya a lot and watching her on the screens first day and first show will give me immense pleasure as it has generated lot of publicity,” he said.

Sambasiva Rao, a young fan of Vidya has been impatiently waiting for the movie to start. “The controversy has raised my appetite,” he admitted. Two female fans Shivani and Shonali share the same view. “I am getting phone calls from many female fans for advance bookings. I think the controversy generated has garnered a huge response from the fans,” Anjali

Cinema manager Satish told Postnoon. Cinema halls like Rama Krishna in Abids are running to packed houses. All the four shows of Dirty Picture have been booked on its first day. In Old City the theatres are expected to receive lukewarm response owing to Friday prayers. “Since it is Friday, we generally don’t have much response here. But we are expecting crowds in the coming days,” A Krishna, manager of Shama Theatre said. Many theatres managements felt that the last minute clearance from the High Court also led to the mix response. “ The movie was initially cancelled due to the controversy. But only at the last minute we received the information that our theatre will be screening the movie,” Kishtaiah, the manager of Kumar Theatre in Kacheguda said.

who Naseeruddin Shah was,” she laughs, recalling a song sequence. “For the song Ooh la la, we had to dance around pots and this was the first time for both Naseer and I. We never knew we could do such things. It was a wonderful experience.” Probe her a little if TDP will affect her image. “People asked me the same thing after I played Auro’s mother. For me this is just another character. And I am deeply honoured that the directors believe in me and have faith in my acting to offer me such roles,” she offers.

PM intervenes in dam row NEW DELHI: Stepping in to defuse tensions over the Mullaperiyar Dam issue, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday asked the Union water resources ministry to hold a meeting of officials of contending Kerala and Tamil Nadu soon. Manmohan Singh said this in a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, in which he also said he looked forward to her cooperation on the Mullaperiyar issue. “I have accordingly advised the ministry of water resources to arrange an early meeting between the officials of the two sides to sort out outstanding issues and allay genuine concerns,” he said in his letter. The PM said he was sure a solution to the dispute over the 115-year-old dam in Kerala can be found through

dialogue. “I am sure that, given goodwill on both sides, an amicable and mutually acceptable solution can be found through a process of dialogue and com-

Land grabbing case against Stalin, son

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Police on Thursday said they have registered a land grab case against former deputy chief minister MK Stalin, his son Udayanidhi Stalin and four others on a complaint. The case has been registered under various sections of the IPC against Stalin, Udayanidhi Stalin, Raja Shankar, Subba Reddy, Ven-

ugopal Reddy and Srinivas for threatening and coercing N Seshadrikumar to sell his house here to the family members of the former deputy chief minister. Police said Srinivas threatened the tenants of Seshadrikumar to vacate the house and forced him to sell the property. The property, measuring around 6,000 sq ft, was registered in the name of Venugopal Reddy, said to be Stalin’s associate, for Rs5.54 crore — less than the market price prevailing in 2010. It is said Stalin wanted the land adjacent to his house for his daughter. According to Seshadrikumar, police refused to accept his complaint against those who threatened him. PTI

Manmohan Singh’s letter comes a day before Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is scheduled to meet him with a request for permission to construct a new dam. “I have made a note of the points raised by you and also heard the issues raised by a delegation of ministers from the government of Kerala. I have pointed out to them that the matter is currently before the Supreme Court empowered committee,” he said in the letter. “I believe that nothing should be said or done to create undue alarm among the people,” he added. AIADMK MPs to submit petition CHENNAI: AIADMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday said her party MPs will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Friday and submit a memorandum pertaining to Kerala government’s stand on Mullaperiyar Dam. She accused the Kerala government of spreading rumours that the Mullaperiyar Dam is unsafe and clamouring for a new dam for political advantage. Referring to the pending case in the apex court and the appointment of an Empowered Committee by the court to study the dam safety, Jayalalithaa alleged: “The Kerala government and the political parties are spreading a fear psychosis.”

Suu Kyi gives Clinton seal of approval in historic meeting YANGON: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sought the blessing on Friday of democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi for a US push to reconcile with Myanmar, after Washington offered the regime a fresh start in relations. In a meeting unthinkable little more than a year ago, Clinton began in-depth talks with the Nobel laureate at the crumbling lakeside mansion in Yangon where Suu Kyi spent most of the past two decades as a prisoner in her own home. Clinton greeted the slender but indomitable opposition leader with a kiss on both cheeks as she arrived at her home, while a small crowd of reporters waited outside. The top US diplomat was on the final day of a historic threeday visit to the nation formerly known as Burma in which she offered incremental concessions to the regime, including easing restrictions on foreign assistance. Suu Kyi and Clinton, two of the world’s best-known women, met face-to-face for the first time on Thursday for a private dinner at which the Secretary of State hand-delivered a personal letter from President Barack Obama. The message thanked Suu Kyi for her ‘inspiration’ to people

Aung San Suu Kyi and Hillary Clinton talk prior to meetings at Suu AFP Kyi’s residence in Yangon yesterday around the world and said the United States would stand by her ‘now and always’. The Nobel Peace laureate is widely admired in Washington and her support is politically indispensable there for any move to reconcile with Myanmar. In an unusual move, Clinton dispensed with her aides and dined alone with Suu Kyi on

Thursday at the lakeside residence of the top Yangon-based US diplomat. A US official said they enjoyed local curries and other delicacies which the consulate’s chef believed to be Suu Kyi’s favourites. Clinton briefed Suu Kyi on her talks earlier on Thursday in Myanmar’s remote new showcase capital Naypyidaw, where she gave an upbeat assessment

of President Thein Sein and his desire to shake off decades of military rule. “The United States is prepared to walk the path of reform with you if you choose to keep moving in that direction. And there’s no doubt that direction is the right one for the people,” Clinton told reporters in Naypyidaw. Clinton also delivered a letter from Obama to Thein Sein, offering a ‘new phase’ in ties in return for ‘tangible outcomes’ on political reform. She offered no major concessions but said that the United States would support UNbacked development assistance to Myanmar. She also said the United States would begin talks on resuming work to find the remains of 600 US service people left unaccounted for in World War II, when Asia’s one-time bread-basket was a major battlefield. But Clinton said that Myanmar must do more to warrant a removal of sweeping sanctions. US congressional law, championed by pro-Suu Kyi exiles, requires sanctions and forces Washington to vote against funding to Myanmar at global financial institutions.

Muslim groups spied on by FBI US Rights activists accuse FBI of hiding under cover to invade community’s privacy NEW YORK: The FBI has spied and compiled information on Muslim community groups under the cover of holding outreach meetings with their representatives, a US rights organization said on Thursday. The American Civil Liberties Union issued a report saying the Federal Bureau of Investigation had overstepped its authority and was violating the trust of groups that agreed to meet law enforcement officers. The report was based on government documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. “The FBI has been illegally using its community outreach programs to secretly collect and store information about activi-

ties... for intelligence purposes,” the ACLU said. According to Michael German, a former FBI agent who works with the ACLU, using such sessions to spy on people

only backfired. “The trust that community outreach efforts aim to create is undermined when the FBI exploits these programs to gather intelligence on the very mem-

bers of the religious and community organizations agents are meeting with,” he said. “The FBI should be honest with community organizations about what information is being collected during meetings and purge any improperly collected information.” However, the FBI denied wrongdoing, saying information gathered by outreach teams was not used for operational matters. The ACLU listed several examples of the alleged practice, including the compiling of notes on opinions, associations and contact details of participants at Ramadan dinners held in 2007 and 2008 during a San Francisco mosque outreach program.

Kingfisher hits another air pocket Postnoon News & Agencies

HYDERABAD: Cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines has hit another air-pocket with many airports asking the airline operator to pay and then fly. The GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) threatened the airline to clear the dues of Rs. 90 crore or else move to cash and carry mode from Saturday. The airline will have to pay Rs. 60 lakh a day from Saturday, if doesn’t clear the dues. It is learnt that GMR-led Delhi and Hyderabad International Airp-

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) too wanted its Rs. 240 crore coughed up right away. The total debt of the airline is put at Rs. 12,000 crore. Passengers are becoming cautious about booking tickets. An air-ticketing company representative, on the condition of anonymity, told Postnoon that were advising the passengers not to choose Kingfisher to fly, as it’s

maintained that they had to cancel flights as they were trying to reconfigure their aircrafts. Kingfisher, which needs over Rs 1,000 crore in working capital loans to wriggle out of the financial crisis, knocked the doors of State Bank of India to give Rs. 400 crore. Airlines usually pay monthly charges to the airport operators. But under the cash-n-carry mode, Kingfisher, which operates maximum flights from Mumbai and Delhi, will have to make daily payments. “We are talking to them for

Jol named a strong Fulham line-up for the game as they looked to qualify with a game to spare, with Duff, Johnson, Aaron Hughes and Stephen Kelly all drafted in, although Bryan Ruiz was ineligible. Fulham were forced to alter their flat-looking attack in the 34th minute when Duff was forced off with a knock. Kerim Frei replaced the Republic of Ireland interna-

tional and the visitors soon eked out their first chance, with Johnson thwarted by the onrushing Nikolay Mihaylov. The visitors started the second period brightly and six minutes after the restart Kelly’s cross was headed wide by Johnson under pressure from Peter Wisgerhof. Frei’s cross caused trouble in the Twente box before Luuk de Jong wasted a giltedged chance to break the deadlock as he headed wide from six yards, while Bobby Zamora was unfortunate to

direct a well-worked Danny Murphy free-kick wide in the 71st minute. Fulham pushed forward in numbers as rain began to pour down in a final 10 minutes that saw Dembele limp off, and things got worse for the visitors when neat play from Twente saw Janko turn home Roberto Rosales’ cross. The goal two minutes from time was compounded further by Johnson’s sending-off in stoppage time for a second yellow card after he kicked the ball away. EVENING STANDARD

Jones clinches Stoke progress Kenwyne Jones’ late header secured Stoke a 1-1 draw and the point they needed against Dynamo Kiev

I

t was a classic game of two halves at the Britannia Stadium, with the visitors dominating the first period and deservedly taking the lead in the 28th minute when Oleksandr Aliyev’s shot was turned into his own net by Matthew Upson. But Stoke rallied after the break and finally found the equaliser nine minutes from time when Jones nodded in Jermaine Pennant’s cross. The night began with a minute’s applause in memory of Gary Speed, and when the

12

game did start it was Kiev who managed the first decent effort on goal, Aliyev testing Asmir Begovic from 25 yards. Stoke had struggled to get going and their task was made significantly harder in the 28th minute when Kiev deservedly took the lead, although in fortuitous circumstances as Aliyev’s shot from the edge of the box looked to be going wide until the unfortunate Upson got a toe to it and guided it into his own net. In the 38th minute Kiev nearly doubled their lead as

former Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko was played in by Aliyev in acres of space on the left of the area but crashed his shot just the wrong side of the post. Stoke needed to improve rapidly in the second half, and they managed their first decent effort on goal in the 52nd minute when Kiev failed to properly clear a free-kick and Wilson Palacios broke the offside trap to get on the end of Rory Delap’s dinked pass but Oleksandr Shovkovskiy manES aged to block.

Lucas was carried from the field on a stretcher after a clash with Juan Mata and his — and the club’s — worst fears were confirmed by a scan. The 24-year-old was inundated with messages of goodwill on Twitter and he responded in kind, writing: “Just to confirm that I will be out until the rest of season.” He added: “I am really sad with the news because I was enjoying [it] a lot on the pitch. I am sure I will come back stronger and I will achieve everything that I dream with the LFC shirt. I am sure I’ll never walk alone.” The midfielder’s absence is a huge blow for Liverpool as Lucas had been one of their best performers not only this season but the previous campaign as well. In the last fortnight, in particular, the Brazilian has shown his worth with impressive performances against Chelsea in both the Barclays Premier League and Carling Cup victories and also in the 11 draw at home to Manchester ES City on Sunday.

corruption watchdog that was advising Fifa after a series of bribery and corruption scandals, has cut its ties with world football's governing body. An official with Transparency International (TI) said two of its key recommendations had been ignored. TI said Fifa paying an expert to oversee major reforms to how it is run would jeopardise his independence. The expert, Mark Pieth, said he would not re-examine old scandals, another recommendation of TI. The move is being viewed by many as a blow to the credibility of Fifa's reform process,

which has been led by its President Sepp Blatter, says BBC sports news correspondent Alex Capstick. Fifa has declined to comment on TI's move. Sylvia Schenk, TI's sports adviser, said Pieth could not remain independent of Fifa if he was being paid by the organisation.

Raghunath sent a low shot into the left corner of the goal after a late recovery saw India level 4-4 in regulation period of the quarterfinal encounter.

India will now meet hosts South Africa on Saturday, who prevailed over Japan 3-2 in another quarterfinal. Against Malaysia, the Indian goal had two narrow shaves in suddendeath extra-time when breakaway moves saw strikers F Saari and I Firdaus in one-on-one position with goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, but delayed shots by the home side players allowed PTI India stay in the contest.

Holistic view of mind, body and soul

Life was a beach World Aids Week till HIV struck

Calamine is good for rashes

When her husband was diagnosed HIV positive, Ramadevi had no inkling that she could be at risk too. All this because of lack of awareness Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

L

ife for 19-year-old Ramadevi was idyllic. She was married to a wonderful man with in-laws who thought the world of him, their only son. For Rama, life was a rosy picture filled with the promise of a bright future as she took on her new role as a wife and daughter-in-law. But then tragedy struck when her husband suddenly took ill and tests revealed that he was HIV positive. “Everything was going fine, but soon my husband began falling ill frequently. What really alarmed us was when he had a TB attack. We took him to a private hospital where they conducted a battery of tests to investigate. It was during the course of this that we discovered that my husband was HIV positive. The doctors asked me to get tested gtoo but my results turned up negative,’ says this Guntur resident. All of this was 12 years ago. At the time though there was nobody to counsel them or even inform them that the virus could spread through sexual contact. The couple continued leading a normal marital life, unaware that this was putting Rama’s life at risk as well. While life as a couple didn’t change much for them as a married couple, what changed was the family’s attitude towards them.

“My husband was an only child and was muchloved. But when his family learnt of his health they reacted rather negatively and began avoiding him. This affected his psyche quite a bit. The man who loved going out, now began to stay home for fear of social stigma. After all his own parents had shunned him,” says Rama, now 31-years-old. Unable to bear the stigma, her husband soon passed away, leaving Rama behind to look after their 3year-old son. “His death left me very disturbed. Until then I didn’t

think I could be HIV positive too. But after watching a few television advertisements, I realised how the virus actually spread, and the fact that I probably had it too. I didn’t even have the courage to go get myself tested for HIV. Besides, I kept thinking that I’d die like my husband did and my son would be left all alone,” explains Rama. This continued till a doctor, visiting their town as part of a leprosy and Aids awareness campaign, paid her a visit and convinced her to take the test. “I tested posi-

tive. Thankfully, for me the doctor counselled my and family and me and convinced us that there were a lot of people with HIV who still lead full lives and there was no reason why I couldn’t do the same. I also began attending support group meets and hearing others share their experience also gave me the courage to lead a normal life,” she says. The one thought that kept troubling her was that is she had access to the right information when her husband had been diagnosed with HIV, she could have protected herself. “Now I am actively working towards spreading awareness about HIV. My family is also very supportive of me now, that they have also been made aware and counselled about HIV,” says Rama who now works with an organisation that works towards checking the spread of HIV and offers free testing and counselling to affected people. Rama’s 15-year-old son, however, does not know about his mother’s health. “Thankfully, he didn’t face any trouble at school either because of my being HIV positive. He is now in class X and I would like him to become a doctor. But he has other plans. He wants to become an engineer. Well, whatever pleases him works for me,” she smiles.

My 6 year old tends to get a severe rash on her body every now and then. This has been going on for the last 6-8 months. The rashes appear like reddish patches. On some days the itching is very severe. Why does this happen and is it a lifelong problem? This kind of rash (Urticaria) can be caused by any allergies under the sun including the sun itself. Drugs can cause it as can foods – especially eggs, fish or nuts. Extreme heat and cold can also cause Urticaria and so can pollen grains, fungal spores, plants or even infectious agents. Urticaria is essentially self limiting and if mild, needs no treatment. Severe lesions can be treated with local calamine application and oral anti histanunis. If the rash is accompanied by severe swelling sometimes adrenaline injection or even steroids may be indicated. The writer is a paediatrician practising at Andromeda Centre. Burning more sugar drives super athleticism WASHINGTON: Muscle fitness drives super athleticism, especially when their cells efficiently utilise sugar as a fuel source, a study reveals. Conversely, exercising improves the muscle’s ability to take up sugar from the bloodstream and burn it for energy. On the flip side, conditions that reduce physical activity, such as obesity, reduce the muscle’s capacity to burn sugar. A new study from SanfordBurnham Medical Research Institute unravels a mechanism that re-programmes metabolic genes in muscles to boost their capacity to use sugar, the journal Genes & Development reported. “Essentially, these transgenic mice are capable of storing and burning sugars at rates usually only seen in a trained athlete,” said researcher Daniel P Kelly.

Working mums multitask more than daddies Working mothers spend about 10 more hours per week multitasking than do working fathers and have a worse time

N

ot only are working mothers multitasking more frequently than working fathers, but their multitasking experience is more negative as well, according to a new study in the December issue of the American Sociological Review. “Gender differences in multitasking are not only a matter of quantity but, more importantly, quality,” said Shira Offer, the lead author of the study and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. “Our findings provide support for the popular notion that women are the ultimate multitaskers and suggest that the emotional experience of multitasking is very different for mothers and fathers.” The study found that working mothers spend about 10 more hours per week multitasking than do working fathers, 48.3 hours per week for moms compared to 38.9 for dads. “This suggests that working mothers are doing two activities at once more than twofifths of the time they are awake, while working fathers

are multitasking more than a third of their waking hours,” said study co-author Barbara Schneider, the John A Hannah Chair and University Distinguished Professor in the College of Education and Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. But the authors said an even bigger issue than the time discrepancy is the difference in the way multitasking makes working mothers and fathers feel. “There is a considerable disparity in the quality of the multitasking experience for working moms and dads,” Offer said. “For mothers, multitasking is — on the whole — a negative experience. Only mothers report negative emotions and feeling stressed and conflicted when they multitask at home and in public settings. By contrast, multitasking in these contexts is a positive experience for fathers.” The Offer-Schneider study relies on data from the 500 Family Study, a multi-method investigation of how middleclass families balance family and work experiences. The 500 Family Study collected comprehensive information from 1999 to 2000 on families living in eight urban and suburban communities across the United States. Most parents in the 500 Family Study are highly educated, employed in professional occupations, and work, on average, longer hours and report higher earnings than do middle-class families in other nationally representative samples. Although the 500 Family Study is not a representative sample of families in the United States, it reflects one of the most time pressured segments of the population. The Offer-Schneider study uses a subsample of 368 mothers and 241 fathers in dual-earner families from the 500 Family Study. According to Offer and Schneider, their study shows that at least some of the difference in the way multitasking makes working mothers and fathers feel is related to the types of activities they perform.

Weaker brain links found in

PSYCHOPATHS Laura Sanders

rain differences might help explain psychopaths’ cold, calculated and often antisocial behaviour, and perhaps even point out better ways to treat or prevent the disorder, a study of Wisconsin prison inmates suggests. Compared with a group of 13 non-psychopathic criminals, a group of 14 psychopaths had weaker connections between an area near the front of the brain called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, or vmPFC, and the amygdale, a pair of almond-shaped structures deep in the brain. Earlier studies have hinted that this particular link is important for emotional regulation and aggression. Neuroscientist Michael Koenigs of the University of Wisconsin–Madison and colleagues discovered the weaker connection by taking a mobile brain scanner to a medium-security prison. Psychopaths are overrepresented in prison populations thanks to their lack of empathy and tendency toward antisocial behaviour. After interviewing inmates and scrutinising their disciplinary records to determine whether they were psychopaths, the scientists conducted two kinds of brain scans. The first measured the strength of brain connections called white matter tracts, which are bundles of nerves that serve as information super-

highways that shuttle information between different brain regions. It was those scans that revealed the weaker link between the vmPFC and the amygdale in psychopaths, the team reports in the Journal of Neuroscience. In the second kind of brain scan, the team assessed which brain regions were coordinating their activity while the prisoners were daydreaming. Normally, the vmPFC and right amygdale work in tandem. But in psychopaths this coordination is lower, the team found. Finding a breakdown in vmPFC connections was particularly intriguing to Koenigs. Neurologists have long observed that after

damage to this area, people can take on personality traits that are reminiscent of a psychopath, including diminished empathy and irresponsible behaviour. The results offer direct evidence that the link between the vmPFC and the amygdale is compro-

Decreased communication between emotional and executive centres may contribute

mised in psychopaths. “This article does a marvellous job of integrating what we know about brain function,” says experimental psychologist Robert Hare of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who was not involved in the study. “What’s striking is that it’s confirming what clinicians have suspected and discussed and talked about. Now we’re getting down to the real nitty-gritty here.” Hare cautions that identifying what’s different in the brains of psychopaths isn’t the same thing as figuring out the cause of psychopathic behaviour. The weakened connections seen in the Wisconsin study could be a by-product of some other environmental or genetic factor commonly found among psychopaths. “We have a chicken and an egg, in a sense,” he says. “There’s a tendency, certainly among people in the criminal justice system, to take any of these deficits and say, ‘Wow, we have a psychopath who has all these behavioural problems, and now we have this brain anomaly or dysfunction that seems to match, therefore one caused the other.’”

SUPERMODEL

Shamita Singha Television anchor, VJ, and animal rights enthusiast. Singha is a wine enthusiast-turned-wine taster.

Sparkling wine comes in all shapes and sizes — white, red, pink, dry, sweet, light, rich — however, it is the bubbles and process that differentiates sparkling wine from other table wines

T

here are three main wine styles, which we encounter in our everyday lives. Still wines, sparkling wines and fortified wines. Sparkling is my personal favourite, as to me it spells celebration, success and sheer happiness. Of course sparkling wine is no longer just a celebratory drink as this bubbly can be popped open any day of the week, even just to unwind. Sparkling wine is the kind of wine where the fermented grape juice goes through a second fermentation process where more yeast is added to the wine and left

to ferment further. Tiny gas bubbles are formed during the second fermentation and that’s your sparkling wine. But not all sparkling wine is champagne. Champagne is a region in France where sparkling wine is made. So only if it comes from Champagne, can it be called by the same name. Sparkling wine made anywhere else in the world, is just simply called that or has other names like Prosecco, a sparkling wine made in Italy. The second fermentation process for the champagne is done in the bottle itself. To the base wine, yeast is added and these

bottles are stored in a cellar for a minimum of 18 months for the base wine to ferment again. Other sparkling wines from around the world like Prosecco follow a different method where the second fermentation takes place in a big tank after which the sparkling wine is bottled. The end result is rich and pleasant where the yeast adds that extra creamy, biscuit-like flavours to the sparkling wine. White and rose sparkling are most famous and popular while some wine makers do red and dessert sparkling wines too. Now you know why we have to burn a hole in our pocket

for any sparkling wine. It’s because of the time and patience that goes into making it. Different labels from around the world will have different terms for you to decipher. Method champenois simply means that this sparkling wine is made traditionally using the champagne technique of the second fermentation in the bottle. But, what we need to know, is that it’s just the method used and it may not be a champagne. Only if the label mentions Champagne, you know it’s from the region itself. Then you have terms like Brut which means ‘dry’ and it is not sweet to taste. Demi Sec means ‘medium dry’ and it has a hint of sweetness in it. Pink champagne or Brut Rose is a sparkling rose wine, which is dry to taste with no sweetness in it. Sparkling wines are generally consumed as an aperitif, a little something to stir your senses and appetite as a before-dinner beverage. It can also be paired with salads, fruit and light starters. Fried finger foods and creamy cheeses can also be accompanied with sparkling wines. So whatever the occasion, no matter what day of the week, this season add a little sparkle to your life! Enjoy!

MODELLING HAS GOOD MONEY Model and anchor Shonal Rawat first started her career in Kolkata but her resilience soon paid off and she found herself making her way to Mumbai

Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com

8Tell us some interesting facts

about you. People generally think me to be a very sweet person but what they don't know is that I can be stubborn and high-handed when I get angry. I am also very lazy, I can just spend my whole day watching television. I love food and contrary to popular belief that models don't eat, you will see me eating all the time and I have a fascination for sweets and I need to eat one every day. I have been independent for a long time now and don't give in easily to anyone or anything.

8 How many years have you walked the earth? I am 30 years old. 8 Your first stint with the camera?

It started off as a hobby. At that time, I did not have a model figure, but my mother's friend who writes for a Bengali paper asked me to pose for some pictures for the paper. I had no intentions of getting into the profession until this photoshoot happened. I finished the shoot in two hours and I got to wear make-up and good clothes. At that time I was studying for MBBS and had aspirations of becoming a doctor, but then I realised doctors never stop studying!

8What inspired you to become

CANDID THREE 8What’s your sexiest

asset? I think it’s my legs. I have long legs, which I love flaunting. I also have wild, weird hair that people love.

8Your Bollywood aspira-

tions. I never had Bollywood aspirations. Sanjay Leela Bhansali had asked me to play the role of Rani's sister in Black but I refused, as I feel I can't emote on camera in terms of melancholy. I am an anchor now and that’s what I want to concentrate on.

8Advice to upcoming

models. There are so many people out there and everyone wants to be famous. Find out if you are a model, know your true talent. I am primarily a ramp model. Once you decide where your potential lies, it becomes easier. All you need is hard work, patience and perseverance. There are no short cuts.

a model? The paper I had modelled for offered me more assignments and the money I got from it made me fall off the chair. I actually didn't have to ask for pocket money any more, there were incentives and people kept backing me and supporting me. I was also flown down to Delhi for an Italian fashion show by Marc Robinson. Then I participated in the Miss India contest, which gave me the grooming I needed and helped me build contacts.

8 What will you not leave home without? In our profession, since we are called for meetings any time, I always make sure to be dressed decently and I have with me kohl, mascara and lip gloss always. 8Your wardrobe essentials.

A girl can never pinpoint one thing as an essential and being the shopaholic and shoe lover that I am, I have loads of them in my wardrobe. I do not go by trends, I always get to wear the best from all designers, so I find it smart to invest in shoes as a lot of people

8 If not modelling, then what would you have been doing? I would have become a doctor or I might have managed events also. I had my own event-management company in Kolkata. I always have a high when it comes to work and I like to keep pushing, I am not a static person.

woman's wardrobe is... For an Indian woman nothing can be more sexy than a sari. Some actresses have started realising it and for the girl within you, a nice fitted dress for semi-formal occasions is a must.

8 Who is your favourite model and why? I have always admired Jesse Randhawa a lot. She just glides over the ramp in every show. She doesn't miss a thing and people could die to get a body like that. 8Projects that people

can spot you in. I have done a lot of ads and tried to balance money and fame. I have done a Sunsilk ad, which was aired in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and

the modelling industry... I have been very lucky so far. I feel everything just fell into my lap. Of course, I had to have a lot of patience. You can't say that I didn't work hard. Also, I don’t think I gave into fame too easily. I once said no to 25 costume changes but I did full justice to the 8 changes I had to do in a show.

A peep into the lives of cityʼs stars and achievers

20

Savouring the taste of life Indira Atluri indira.a@postnoon.com

A

s we are escorted into his office, we realise that Uttam Reddy is a man who a lot of people look up to. It is a recurring scene where people walk in to his office with questions and requests, to which he listens keenly and offers advice that only seem to make the people happy. Few minutes into our chat and we realise that honouring guests is like second nature to Uttam. Uttam is the second of two siblings. He is the brother of Nandini Reddy, the director of the famous movie Ala Modalaindi. Born to Roopa Reddy and Bharat Reddy, Uttam spent most part of his life with his mother. He says, “I lived for 12 years with my grandmother, and then with my mother. My parents were separated, and my mother worked hard to bring us up.” There is a sense of pride in his eyes, when he tells us, “Thirty years ago, my mother owned a chain of ice cream parlours. It was quite amazing to see a single woman work hard in those days, when it was still a taboo being a single mother.” Interestingly, Uttam never wanted to be in the food business, but it was a chance encounter that made him become the name behind Rayalaseema Ruchulu. He tells us, “Four of my friends started Rayalaseema Ruchulu in Masab Tank, a couple of years ago. Then one of them had to leave the business as he was going away to another country, so I pitched in to support them. And before I knew, all my partners had to break out of the business for various reasons. And now, I run the show — and life couldn’t be better!” Uttam is married to Geetanjali Reddy, who is one of the city’s most sought-after wedding planners. Asked about his childhood, Uttam is at first reluctant to talk about it. We wonder why, but soon realise that his childhood was full of naughty experiences. “I was an

absolute brat in school. There were lots of fights with my friends, and of course, that meant taking home a lot of complaints. My sister and I too have had our share of petty fights, but as we grew up, we did not get to meet as often to continue our fights,” he reveals, laughing. Uttam needless to say is very proud of his sister’s success. He tells us, “It is an absolute clean movie, with no vulgarity, and sleaze whatsoever. So it had to be a hit, and I am the happiest brother to see that happen.” On his marriage to Geetanjali, Uttam says, “Geetanjali is a Goan, and ours was an arranged marriage.” This took us by surprise. He then goes on to explain, “My sister Nandini, got my profile registered on a matrimonial website, and started to hunt for prospects for me! And she liked Geetanjali when she saw her profile, and the rest is history. Geetanjali is also very busy with her work, but we managed a vacation to Bali a few months ago — it gave us that much needed break.” He adds, “Geetanjali does a lot of major wedding decors, events and stage planning in the city.” During their free time, the couple enjoys catching up with friends, and listening to old Hindi songs. Uttam also loves to do yoga and go for walks.

The owner of Rayalaseema Ruchulu, Uttam Reddy takes life as it comes. His keen business acumen combined with a relaxed attitude has made his venture into the restaurant sector an instant hit in Hyderabad

ife Geetanjali tells us more about her meeting with Uttam. “Ours was an arranged-comelove marriage. We spoke for almost two months before we met, the day he came to Goa for the first time his flight was delayed for six hours. Ours was a brief courtship and we got engaged in three months and were married in six.” On what makes their relationship tick Geetanjali says, “We are both foodies and love trying dif-

ferent cuisines. Travelling is another passion we share and we have been to Europe, the Middle East, Bali etc. We also enjoy water sports.” On her husband she says, “Uttam is a very understanding and supportive husband. He has always been there for me. On the work front, I would say that he is calm and composed and rarely does he get flustered over anything and he has excellent organisational skills.” Nandini, Uttam’s sister is busy with her movies currently, but the minute we asked her about her brother, Nandini is all chatty. She tells us, “As I am the elder one, I always bullied him. Thankfully for him, it is not the case anymore. As a kid, I remember him saving up on the monopoly money. He also used to take money from our mother’s purse without her knowing, and relend it to her! Uttam is a self-made man today, and he makes me proud.” She then reveals a secret, “There are also a few sequences in my movie that were inspired by him. Uttam was always worried about getting bald. I incorporated this emotion in a scene where a doctor is telling the hero that it is not really too late, and maybe, there is a cure. The audience is left wondering what illness the hero has, and then suddenly the doctor tells him ‘It’s okay man, it happens to everyone, and hair-fall issues are not as bad as they are projected!’ That particular scene had the audience in splits and Uttam got to know that it was inspired by him, though only much later.”

Living in a Varun Sandesh has had a roller coaster ride over the past four years, both in his personal and professional life. The actor opens up about his career in a candid chat

DREAM WORLD Hemanth Kumar hemanth. k@postnoon.com

I

t’s been four years since Varun Sandesh made his debut in films and considering the types of films he has been part of over the years, one might say that he has done a fine job. “Acting is a dream come true for me and I do agree that it’s been a roller coaster ride but the important part is that I am living in a dream world,” he says. After he got a chance in Sekhar Kammula’s Happy Days he decided to pursue a career in acting rather than going to college. “I do miss that part of life, but I am more than glad that I live a different life here where I get to study life, people and work,” he says with a smile. His American accent is intact when he talks and it’s hard to spot any other emotion on his face except for a perennial smile. “I am a happy-go-lucky guy. There was a time when I hardly cared about anything, but I guess I have matured a little now,” he explains. We ask him if the success or failure of his films bothers him, after all that is what determines the longevity of an actor. “I can’t determine the fate of my films. All I can do is give my 100 per cent while doing the job and leave the rest to the audience to decide,” he replies and adds, “Every day is a new learning experience for me. I believe that success is measured by the effort I put in.” So, doesn’t criticism affect him? “My father is my biggest critic. Compared to what he has to say about my performances, I must say that the critics have been quite friendly,” he chuckles. We remind him that he’s often criticised for his accent while delivering the dialogues but he seems unperturbed. “I think I have improved a lot on that front. In fact, my father saw my new film Priyudu, recently and he told me that my diction has improved a lot and also that it’s my best performance till date,” he confesses.

My father is my biggest critic. Compared to what he has to say about my performances, I must say that the critics have been quite friendly. This year, two of his films had released and only one of them, Brahmigadi Katha managed to rake in some money at box office. His new film, Priyudu is yet another love story. “It’s funny because almost every filmmaker who approaches me has a love story in mind. I can’t wait for a dream role, so I end up choosing what I find intriguing. I loved the way Shravan, the director of the film, narrated the story to me. The film is a love story of a guy who believes that love is a waste of time and energy. It’s a treatmentbased film and a complete entertainer,” says Varun. He has already begun shooting for Neelakanta’s upcoming film titled Chammak Challo and another film, which will be directed by Nandyala Ravi will go on floors in January, 2012. “I just want to keep trying to do a better job. These days, I feel quite bored when I am not shooting. My family is my biggest strength and thanks to them, I love my work and life way too much to be bogged down by anything,” says the actor.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
