C
hief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, in his new ebullient mood, today turned tables on the MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi who had been going hammer and tongs at the CM and his government on ‘failing to protect minority interests.’ Owaisi was participating in the discussions on the SC/ST Bill 2012. Owaisi found fault with the SC ST sub plan Bill saying that the plan consists of elements of executive order, not a historic decision, as claimed by government. “There is nothing new in this hyped plan. SC,ST should come forward independently and seek their rights. It is because of MIM that Muslims have reservation in AP.” Owaisi proudly declared in the next elections his party will have 15 seats but the Congress would not get more than 20. He said “innocent Muslims are being framed under false
M charges.” Kiran was up on his feet with a sharp reaction. “It’s because of the Congress the MIM has 7 seats,” he glared at the MIM leader. We don’t need certificate of secularism form anyone. I or my government do not punish innocent people as do some others. It is you who do that. I know perfectly well why Owaisi is making this meaning-
less allegation. It is their political game but we will not bite it.” Punctured, Owaisi lost much of his zeal afterwards. The Bill will be put to vote in the afternoon and by all probability carried as there seems no serious opposition to it. The day-day discussions on the Bill produced no spark as few were seen actively studying the Bill and point out anything substantial.
edical aspirants of Andhra Pradesh are put to a quandary with the MCI brushing aside the State’s demand for extension of EAMCET for another year and announcing dates for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET). The test will be held in May in five centres – Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Warangal, and Nellore. The State has 40 medical colleges and 5500 seats. The confusion created partly by the state government claiming that the MCI had agreed to continuance of EAMCET for another year has caught the Andhra Pradesh candidates unaware. The NEET has announced all the information and applications are available online on www.cbseneet.nic.
It is said the result will be out by June next. There exist at least 26 cases from different states on NEET. However, the MCI has gone ahead with its decision to hold test across the country. Parents and candidates turned pale with the new announcements and the education authorities are unable to explain how it happened. Meanwhile, the Student Federation of India, a leftist student association, has asked the Union Government to intervene and allow Andhra Pradesh exemption for a year as was promised earlier. “Students will lose much since they have set their eyes only on EAMCET. The State government also had given to understanding that it was EAMCET this year. The State should pressurise the Centre to reconsider MCI decision and enable AP candidates to write EAMCET not NEET this year.”

ave you seen a MLA or MP travelling by the SRTC bus or auto-rikshaw in the State? Leave alone sitting MPs or MLAs, not even an ex-MLA or a local corporator used public transport. But Moosapati Kamalamma, 67, exMLA has no private transport of her own. She uses both RTC and auto-rikshaw and is happy about it. “For today’s MLAs, it may be an insult to even step into a local bus. But for me it is a matter of pride as I don’t have money for a car. The State government has given a free bus pass to travel in APSRTC buses. What else do you want?” Elected MLA from Nakrekal Assembly constituency, a strong CPM bastion of Nalgonda district in 1972,
Kamalamma holds the record of the only Congress leader elected to the Assembly for 37 years, till 2009 General elections. She was only 27 years old when she entered the House for the first time. Kamalamma, who
came to Assembly to watch the proceedings of the House on Saturday spoke to this correspondent on various issues related to the State government in general and Congress party in particular. She said that though both CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy and APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana promised to recognise the services of senior leaders on several occasions, the reality is different. She is sure the party would be left in the lurch if it does not take suggestions of senior party leaders. “The Congress Party still has the strength and capacity to
retain power if it strictly takes certain steps. The most important would be to take the services of senior leaders. Both the CM and PCC chief said that they would. But nothing of this sort has happened so far. I think both the leaders are not bothered. She alleged her own party leaders did not allow her to meet party president Sonia Gandhi on the same issue on several occasions. "I went to Delhi to meet Madam Gandhi several times. But despite being a former MLA and party leader, I was denied access to her. If this had happened to me, you can imagine
the plight of an ordinary Congress worker," she recalled. Commenting on the rule of CM Kiran she said that the performance can’t be judged by two years’ rule but he believes he is trying to do some good to the State. According to Kamalamma, a staunch supporter of separate Telangana state made a shocking statement that the her party would never create the separate Telangana state as the power is wielded by strong Andhra and Rayalaseema leaders who have both money and muscle power. “ The Telangana state will never come during the Congress rule. The entire Telangana region is controlled by Andrha and Raylaseema leaders and industrialists. These leaders are also a part of our party .They will never allow the creation of Tstate at any cost," she said.

racking the whip on drunken driving, the Hyderabad Traffic Police have registered 10,277 cases since November 2011. Of these, majority of the violators were found to be in between the ages of 21 and 31.
Age group of violators 18 to 20 years: 242 (2.35 per cent) 21-30 years: 4,670 (45.44 per cent) 31-40 years: 3,503 cases (34.08 per cent)

he Motor Vehicle Act, 1939, states "Driving by a drunken person shall be punishable at the first offence with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with a fine which may extend to two thousand rupees or both; and for a second offence, if committed within three years of the previous similar offence, imprisonment for a term which may extend to three thousand rupees, or with both. But after its amendment in 1994, 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood is permitted.
Profession-wise breakup Blue-collar workers: Businessmen: Private employees: Software professionals:
A closer look at the statistics found that 27.86 per cent of those booked for driving under the influence were businessmen; 16.3 per cent were private employees and 14.23 per cent were software professionals. A total of 17 people were
penalised with one-day imprisonment in the last year, and five of these were women. Those that are caught are fined between `2,000 and `2,500 for each violation and are also instructed to attend counselling classes. The total fine amount
recovered by the traffic department over the past year is `2.5 crore. “Every week, nearly 200 cases are filed and the highest cases of drunken driving are recorded on Fridays and Saturdays. We have seen a dip in the number of viola-

tions since we launched this drive last year. The total number of accidents has fallen to 1,740 this year when compared to 2,651 last year. Similarly, 315 deaths have been recorded this year, against 441 last year,” said traffic inspector AV Srinivas. Encouraged by their success, the traffic police are seeking to put in more stringent measures like imprisonment for habitual offenders are cancellation of driving licences.

he expressed political empathy for the welfare of SC and ST seems to be limited to wooing them for votes since the two major social segments play a big role deciding the electoral fortunes of all parties. It was evident during the second day session of the House on Saturday. While many MLAs preferred to skip the debate held on implementation of SC and ST Sub plan, those who attended the session were seen pursuing their personal works rather than participate in the discussion.

FACTOR
There was a clear distinction between the MLAs who attended the session and those who skipped it. While MLAs belonging to SC and ST community made it point to participate in the discussion, those from other castes clearly avoided it. Among MLAs who skipped the debate, majority of the MLAs, especially those belonging to the opposition TDP and TRS, were seen loi-
tering around in lobbies of the House. These leaders made a beeline to CM’s and Cabinet ministers’ chambers with their personal work. Cabinet ministers, too, instead of attending the debate, preferred to spend time with MLAs cutting across

Among the prominent ministers, transport minister and APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana, who, after spending a brief time in the House, returned to his chamber in Assembly building and busied himself meeting with MLAs. He also held a prolong chit-chat with mediapersons. Speaking to Postnoon on the issue, minister for rural develop-

ment Dokka Manikya Varaprasad agreed that majority of the MLAs were not showing any interests in attending the crucial debate. “It is true only the MLAs belonging to SC and ST communities were seen in the House. It is unfortunate that majority of the MLAs were absent,” he remarked. The minister felt that response from other MLAs would have been better if the government held a regular Winter Session instead of a special session. “TRS MLA D Vinay Bhaskar expressed similar feelings,” he said. Sub-plan is only meant for two sections of society and not for all. This is the most important reason for many MLAs absence, he said. Some of the speakers who put forth their party views on the implementation of the subplan from Opposition group on the second day included TDP senior MLA M Narasimhulu, TRS MLA T Hareesh Rao, YSR Congress president YS Vijayamma and CPIM Floor Leader J Ranga Reddy.

What’s cooking?
While most of us are wondering what the New Year will be like, select couples across the City have planned on cooking their way to 2013 as ‘Who is the best cook?’, a competition thrown open by www.studentmug.com, starts today. NIDHI BHUSHAN

he City has kickstarted its own localised version of Masterchef at Somajiguda today. This December, residents of Hyderabad have put on their chef ’s hats to be titled the ‘best cook’ in the City. ‘Who is the best cook?’ — a competition organised by
www.studentmug.com — has been split into five weekly segments. Every Sunday — starting today — 20 participants (singles or couples) will compete against each other to reach the finals that will be held at the end of the month. While 10 contestants will compete during lunch hours at a given apartment kitchen, the other 10 will battle it out during dinner time at a different venue. The contestants will be given two hours to impress the panel of judges with their tasty delights.
Two winning contestants — from lunch and dinner respectively — will be shortlisted every Sunday for the finals. “I enjoy cooking and participating in such events,” says Celine Pedro, a contestant participating in today’s lunch competition. “In fact, I was even awarded by a reputed English newspaper for the best pickle in the City 25 years ago. I had made a pickle using bitter gourd for which I was awarded `500 then.” Another contestant, who is participating in today’s cooking tussle, K Kanyakumari also says
that it was her passion for cooking that made her enrol for the competition. “I’ve participated in such events earlier as well. I quite enjoy it,” she says.
Live and loving it As she gets ready to go on stage for the Hyderabad leg of Vikranth Pawar’s production Salt & Pepper, Mandira Bedi chats with Postnoon about acting, theatre and more. Padmini C Padmini.c@postnoon.com
You have dabbled in a number of mediums including film, television and live shows. What is it that keeps bring you back to theatre?
And now, you have Salt & Pepper in which there are 10 stories that you’ll enact back-toback! That’s right. There are 10 stories about different types of relationships and three actors with me including Darshan Jariwalla, Kuki Grewal and Vikram Kochhar. I play six of the characters of different age groups. One moment you’ll see me as a 30-year-old, 10 minutes la-
What is your favourite among these different stories? My favourite happens to be the one that seems to be the most popular with the audiences as well. I play a 65-year-old who’s afraid of heights.
But on her birthday, she tries to conquer her fear and gets on a Ferris wheel. The story centers on a conversation between her and the man sitting with her.
ting more complicated, so of course relationships are too.
Does Hyderabad promise to be an ideal audience?
Do you think that as we evolve, our relationships too are getting more complicated? Absolutely. Life is getS BALA KRISHNA
A lot of people ask me that having done so many things, what is it that I enjoy doing the most and I always say, anything live — be it hosting a show, or cricket or theatre. The absolute rush of performing in front of a live and changing audience is unparalleled. When you are performing in front of a camera, you have the luxury of retakes but on stage, there’s just no space for mistakes. I started my theatre career with a play in which I had a 30-minute monologue. Believe me when I say, it can’t get more exciting or challenging than that.
ter, I play a 65-year-old. So, it’s very challenging but exciting at the same time!
I’ve performed her twice before and the audience was very cultured and extremely intelligent. That’s what I’m hoping to see this time too. There’s something for everybody in the play, the stories relate to anyone from a teenager to someone’s who’s been in a relationship for 40 years. So, the more varied the audience is, the more they will enjoy it.
What after this? This is the fifth weekend that we are performing the play. We have two more to go. Other than that, I’m shooting for a film with Atul Agnihotri. I’ve also just been offered a Vikram Bhatt film, so I’m contemplating that. In all these years of my career, I must’ve worked on 4-5 films in all. But now, upon motherhood, I’m being offered so many roles, it’s getting hard to choose! (Laughs) What: Ballentine's Salt & Pepper [important to mention brand name at least once somewhere] When: December 2, 2012 Where: Shilpakala Vedika Tickets available on bookmyshow.com
The winner of the title will be awarded `25,000, while the first runner up and second runner up will receive `15,000 and `10,000 respectively.

Morsi calls on Egypt to vote President Mohamed Morsi called on Egyptians on Saturday to vote in a December 15 referendum on the controversial draft constitution at the heart of a political crisis, amid mass Islamist rallies in Cairo. by John Davison
CAIRO: President Mohamed Morsi called on Egyptians on Saturday to vote in a December 15 referendum on the controversial draft constitution at the heart of a political crisis, amid mass Islamist rallies in Cairo. Morsi made the announcement following a ceremony where he received a copy of the charter from the head of the Islamistdominated constituent assembly, boycotted by liberals and Christians, that adopted it the day before. Hundreds of thousands of Islamists rallied from early on Saturday in support of Morsi's new expanded powers and the contested charter. The document has taken centre stage in the country's worst political crisis since his election in June. Crowds flooded the squares and large avenues near Cairo University, led by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, on whose ticket Morsi ran for office, and by hardline Salafists, causing traffic jams in the capital. On Friday, opponents of the draft constitutions had massed in Tahrir Square, demonstrating the country's widening polarisation that has set largely Islamist forces against secular-lean-

ing opponents. “We want this phase to end. We want a constitution,” one protester said on Saturday. “If people don't like the constitution, let them say so through the ballot boxes." Others chanted: “The people want the implementation of God's law." “We are here to support the decisions of Dr Mohamed Morsi; we support him because those decisions
were a part of the revolutionary demands," said Hend Abdellateef. Veiled women ululated among the crowd, sprinkled with Egyptian and Saudi flags and posters of Morsi. Banners read: “Together (with Morsi) to save the revolution”. “There are people who want instability," said Khaled, one of the demonstrators, referring to antiMorsi protesters. “There
needs to be a constitution for there to be stability." Pro-Morsi protests were also staged in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and the central Egyptian province of Assiut. The crisis was sparked when Morsi issued a decree on November 22 giving himself sweeping powers and placing his decisions beyond judicial review. That move provoked mass protests and a judges' strike.
7 motorists trapped in Japan tunnel collapse
Taliban attacks Afghan city airport
TOKYO: At least seven people have reportedly been trapped inside a tunnel near Tokyo that caught fire after its ceiling collapsed on Sunday morning, reported the Guardian. Japanese media said several vehicles were ablaze after a 100 metre long section of the Sasago tunnel's ceiling caved in shortly after 8am. Kyodo news agency said a mudslide had triggered the collapse. Dozens of firefighters were trying to extinguish the blaze while emergency workers attempted to reach those thought to be stranded inside. The tunnel is located along a busy section of the Chuo expressway about 50 miles west of the Japanese capital. “We have limited information on the accident at the moment but smoke is said to be coming out from the tunnel as an unspecified number of vehicles were burning," a police spokesman said.
KANDAHAR: Taliban insurgents launched a major attack Sunday against a NATO base at an Afghan city airport with suicide car bombs, rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and small arms fire. The Taliban claimed insurgents had entered the airport at Jalalabad, near the eastern border with Pakistan, but this was denied by NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). “Insurgents including suicide bombers attacked the perimeter of the Jalalabad air base this morning," a spokesman told AFP. “None of the attackers succeeded breaching the perimeter." The airport complex has multiple layers of security, with the NATO base set well back from the first entrance, which an Afghan official said had been breached.

EDITORIALS THE ‘IGNORANCE’ of the white-collared As many as 10,000 cases of drunken driving have been registered by the city police since November 2011. It is commendable on part of the Hyderabad police that their anti-drink driving drive has led to a decline in the instances of this offence. Keep up the good work, officers. Now there are some interesting facts revealed when the stats are checked. Majority of the violators are aged between 21 and 31. Also, if we group them according to profession, it is the one that comprise the businessmen and the white-collared that abound in count. So the next time we tend to pin it on ignorance and lack of idea of the seriousness of the offence we must reconsider. An offender belonging to either of the categories is surely an educated man and knows the rules of the land and yet goes on to drink and drive and endanger his and his fellow citizens’ lives. For such people the punishment must be more severe because they are wilfully asking for trouble by driving when they are tipsy. They have the safer and saner option of going in cabs or being driven to their homes by the sober. But they always insist on driving back, despite being unable to say left from right, becasue it is a dent on their reputation for holding their drink. Most of these accidents occur at night when the roads are clear, and we know in a car our foot gets heavy and on a bike our wrist becomes more flexible when the circumstances are such. What to speak of the disaster that can occur if our senses are numb? We only have to be more humane and caring to have a respect for life — ours and others — to drive responsibly. Why must we live a life of regret and remorse after claiming innocent lives when our pursuit of sport and thrill go awry?

A humungous moment of humanity From the hip SYED SHOAIB
F
inally on a historic day of the 65th anniversary of the United Nation's resolution, for the partition of British mandate Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, 139 countries from round the globe, that is 69 per cent of all the Member States of the UN General Assembly with nine against and 41 abstaining from voting, brought into existence a dream that was almost turning into a chimera for the Palestinian people. The UN recognised Palestinian territories as “non member observer State”. It is a great feat not only for Palestine (for whom it is humungous) but also the rest of the world, for it set right one of the few wrongs that had been left too long without redress. As an upgraded observer state, the Palestinian territories could join treaties and specialised UN agencies, such as the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the Law of the Sea Treaty, the Nuclear NonProliferation Treaty and the International Criminal Court. That would give it legal rights over its territorial waters and air space, and would allow Palestinians to sue for control in the International Court of Justice and to move the ICC against Israel for war crimes. It has been 66 years since India got its independence. About three generations have lived to experience freedom. Ask the first generation what freedom feels like. They are bound to lay it on thick the distinction between being oppressed and being free; ask the second generation if they remember the price of the freedom they savour. They were too keen building the country and couldn’t be bothered with anything else, is the likely reply. Now pose the same question to the ‘X’ or ‘Y’ generation.
You will more likely see blank faces, for they don’t know what it is ‘not to have freedom’. They are the generation born in prosperity and progress. Now ask the very same question to the very same generation in Palestine; what do you suppose the answer will be? The people whose freedom was taken away from them about the same time we got ours and their territory forcibly divided into two states, and somehow the fact of the second state ‘The Arab State’ got entirely lost in the chaos of war and pages of innumerable UN Resolutions, while the ‘State of Israel’ hogged all approval in the aftermath of the holocaust. When a traumatised Jewish population took refuge from an intolerant and racist Europe in the new Israel and healed its wounds in a safe haven, it also displaced an entire population that had hitherto been living in this safe haven and pushed it to the edge, literally, for over half a century. To the young Palestinians born in battlefield with a history of having not one, not two, but three generations constantly living on the
edge, living in fear, what do you suppose these kids will have to say about freedom? To them freedom is a fairytale their parents would have told them about in bedtime stories. An entire population was not even acknowledged as human beings enough to have feelings, family and children. Ideals of letting everybody live in dignity and without fear for their lives have not reached this battlescarred community. That has changed and their grievances will now be heard by the world. The UN has finally awoken, not so much as to declare that a wrong was committed out rightly, but at least enough to acknowledge the existence of the Palestinian people. It has shown enough courage to stand up against opposition of the US and Israel, to accept these people as worthy of consideration. The euphoria of being recognised humans must be a great feeling for the Palestinians. Now starts the process of building, which by no means is an easy task. Their journey is going to be even more arduous than was ours. Ours was always a country
rich in resources, making the mission of rebuilding easier. Also, the much-delayed justice handed to Palestine will only be effective if it goes beyond the papers. Despite the US and Israel’s denouncement of the Vote, they need to realise that the world has recognised the Rights of the Palestinian people and the very fact that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas accepted the existence of Israel in his speech shows that the Palestinian leadership has made peace with itself and moved forward. It is time Israel reciprocated rather than stating that the move will impact the peace process between the two countries. Rather, the peace process can be accelerated, as now the two countries can negotiate from a position of equality. It also points to the declining clout of US to influence decisions taken by countries. This fact must be realised and both the countries should join in to implement the world body’s resolution. Such a move will not only strengthen the UN but make it a meaningful body and rejuvenate it.

Care for creditworthiness
Credit cards open to you a world of opportunities in terms of easy finance. However, if not handled with care, they can burn a hole in your pocket and affect your creditworthiness rating. umar came from office… this time very early at 9pm. His wife opened the door and their two children were waiting at the dining table. Kumar hugged the children and said “Daddy is going to buy you…. a car.” Earlier in the day, he had received `2 lakh as annual performance bonus. With plenty of New Year offers on four-wheelers, Kumar applied for a leave next day to enquire and decide on the available options. The next day, Kumars finalised their dream car! They were lucky to get a transfer of booking from a customer who was willing to postpone the purchase date. Kumar submitted all the documents for obtaining a car loan for the balance amount after making the down payment of `2 lakh. His income was good enough to make the EMIs affordable. Everything looked favourable and the showroom manager wished him good luck. However, next morning Kumar received a call from the showroom manager who said his car loan could not be approved due to his poor credit history! This sounded like Greek and Latin to Kumar. So after the day’s work he headed to the showroom to discuss matter. As far as Kumar is concerned, he only had two credit cards in his life time and never had a loan or any other credit facility till date. One credit card was with a limit of `50,000 taken before marriage almost seven years ago, which he stopped using as soon as he obtained a new one with a higher limit. The showroom manager placed his Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited (CIBIL) report on the table which shows that his old credit card was not closed and overdue with an
amount of `11,243 and reflecting a “written off ” status. Then he realised that the annual card fee had remained unpaid and the card was not closed. He immediately called the credit card company and came to know that the overdue amount was the unpaid amount with late fee and finance charges for the past seven years! A dejected Kumar trudged home to break the bad news to his family. It took two months for Kumar to settle the issue with the lender and dispute the same with CIBIL to update his records. Still improving his damaged report remained a puzzle for Kumar whose car dreams went down the drain due to lack of knowledge of the increasing trend of the financial institutions to consider credit score and repayment track record of the borrower seriously as part of lending policy. The author is an employee of iCrediZen Inc., a company providing solutions for CIBIL issues and Credit card problems.
Dos and Don’ts for credit card users
Pay on time Especially making loan repayments and credit card dues, make the payment for the minimum amount due in time. Nothing has as big of an impact on your credit history as late payments
Establish credit early Having clean and active credit accounts opened long back could improve the score significantly. If you are averse to
credit, on principle, consider setting up automatic monthly payments for say, utilities and phone on a credit card account and locking the card away.
Don’t reach the maximum credit limit available Lenders would never be impressed with a person utilizing all the available credit avenues to the maximum extent. This could mean
trouble managing your finances. Stick to 50 per cent of the available credit limits and start making payments if it exceeds.
to the fact that you are credit hungry!
Never look credit hungry!
Do not wait for someone to pull your report and comment on it. Instead make a habit to obtain your report periodically say annually or semi-annually to know that the data reported on you is in order and correct. Avoid last minute surprises!!
Request for your credit history by any person other than you, would be an enquiry on your report. Multiple requests would lead to many enquiries on your report in a short period, leaving your report suffer
Above all…. Review your report periodically

INTERVIEW SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2012
City’s very own fashion entrepreneur
Her exhibition is the most-talked about fashion event in the city. Kamini Saraf opens up about Fashion Yatra, her future plans and her secret to success.
AMY ROSE THOMAS
amyrose.t@postnoon.com
1
Fashion Yatra that you bring every year is the most-talked about fashion event in the City. How much of work goes into it? My business is running in an organised manner now but this was not the case seven years ago when I had started out. I didn’t know any of the upcoming designers and it took time to convince them to display their materials at Fashion Yatra. By 2008, I got a hang of it and branched out and introduced Fashion Yatra in Delhi and Ludhiana. This year too I will be organising exhibitions in other cities. In each city, I give a different look to Fashion Yatra. While exhibiting in Delhi and Ludhiana, I ensure that clothes are more blingy and less of cotton. While in Chennai, designers whom I select are those who exhibit more subdued clothes.
2
What inspired you to take up this line — event management as opposed to designing? And what was your subject of study ? I have always been fashion-inclined since childhood. I learnt design for a while but I refused to take it up seriously as a career option because I feel that tailors in the city are not that good at their work and are extremely expensive. I was a commerce student and did not even learn business management. In 2003 and 2004, I helped out a few of my designer friends with their exhibition and before I knew it, I started to get more offers and in 2005 I started Fashion Yatra, when I realised I was good at it.
3
Apart from Fashion Yatra, you are also known for your philanthropic activities. Which NGOs are you tied up with? I believe that if you help and support to the needy, you get back multifold. I believe in this principle and it has always worked like that for me. I mostly give aids for education of the girl child, to the Go Green foundation that work against global warming, Vijayalakshmi Breast Cancer foundation and Blue Cross. I also support People for Animals foundation when they took up the initiative to Save the Tiger. My only concern is that I do not get time to spend time with any of the
organisations. Later on in life, I plan to take out time for this. I also started the business of art merchandise in which I used works of young artists. Even talented artists fade away if they do not get a break at the right time. Branding and advertising is necessary to promote artists in the right way. We target the corporate employees and designed merchandise including wall hangings, posters, table mats, pen stands and clocks. However, when it comes to new names, people are not very enthusiastic. Names like Vaikuntam help sell these items easily. But, I believe that this scenario will change slowly and people who like good art are bound to pick up young artists work too.
4
Do you have any tips to share with women who want to start their own businesses? A lot of exhibitions have sprouted in the City. The same crowd and designers seem to be frequenting these exhibiting. It feels like 15 to 20 designers do not leave Hyderabad. In this scenario when the competition is very stiff, it is necessary to stand out from the rest. I tried to give a fresh and summery look to Fashion Yatra each year. There are 15 to 20 loyal designers who display their work every year but at the same time there are also designers whom I shuffle so that an exhibition doesn’t look the same each year. Another important aspect I keep in mind is that the clothes that are displayed are affordable. I do not want people to come to the event because they are obligated.
5
What is your advice for an upcoming designer? We are associated with a fashion institute from where we take interns for the Fashion Yatra. They are assessed in terms of their managing and designing skills. Those who are selected will be given a platform to showcase their stuff. I think that fashion students should keep three things in mind while designing. Affordability, ensure that they are not replicas of the ones done by established designers and good finish. Most of times, clothes look good from the outside but when you turn it upside down there might be strings hanging because the tailors they approached are not good.
6
What is your fitness mantra? I am always running out of time to hit the gym but I make sure that I think positive and this solves most of my health and emotional issues.

Road to relaxation RANJANI RAJENDRA

fter what seemed like an incredibly long month, what with truck loads of work, sundry family events, tonnes of late nights and a hectic trip, my body had begun to feel knotted and tight. The tension in me was palpable and my shoulders just refused to stop tingling. My system was crying for some relaxation when I decided I had to do something to de-stress a little bit. So just like that, in the middle of the week, I headed to Nirva, the spa at Ella Hotels in Gachibowli. As I stepped into the spa, I was enveloped by the aroma of fresh lemongrass and muted
lighting, a welcome relief from the blazing afternoon sun. The staff was extremely courteous and eager to pamper me. After a brief consultation and a cup of herbal tea we zeroed in upon the Nirva Signature Massage, a 90 minute massage session that promised to lift my senses and help my tired muscles feel sane again. My road to relaxation began with a gentle massage with my masseuse softly kneading my tired muscles from head to toe. She began by gently tweaking my toes to more firm strokes along the pressure points on my back. Then came the good part — warm almond oil infused with pure essential oils was spread on my back and legs as my therapist began working magic with her hands. Considering, the long hours most of us spend in front of the computer with backs hunched and necks strained, this blend of

deep tissue massages, Thai Shiatsu and Ayurvedic massage techniques works wonders. As my therapist continued applying deep palm pressure I felt myself begin to relax. All thoughts of work and the zillion chores I had to do at home flew out the window, as my masseuse worked out the kinks in my muscles. There were times when I had to bite my tongue to keep from crying out in pain as my therapist firmly kneaded the tightly knotted muscles in my back and shoulders, but it was soon followed by a sense of relaxation – a kind I’d forgotten existed. Despite my initial misgivings, I found myself enjoying the massage and realised that slowly but steadily my masseuse had managed to work out most of the kinks in my body. In fact, the luxurious massage coupled with the soft oriental music in the background managed to get me to nod off temporarily.
After 90 minutes of pure luxury, I was guided to my very own steam room for 10 minutes of detoxifying, followed by a relaxed shower. When I stepped out of the treatment room I felt a lot lighter. I wouldn’t say every knot in my body had been worked out, but I did emerge feeling a whole lot fresher and relaxed. At least, to keep me going for another month. Of course, like all good things, this 90-minute session of pure luxury does come at a price, but it is definitely worth it. The next time you head to Nirva watch out for their Nirva Retreat package, a combination of beauty and rejuvenation; A Moment of Truth, a combination of a scrub and massage and their Thai Sensation Package. In fact, the spa has won some rave reviews from its guests as well and is even listed on TripAdvisor.

Art stolen from Christie’s
Banksy murals on show
It is a work of art by one of the world’s most-feted artists, the Turner prizewinning Douglas Gordon. It is also made from solid gold, with an insurance value of around £500,000 and it has been stolen while in the care of Christie’s. The artist fears it may have been taken for the scrap value of its metal, which he estimates to be around £250,000.
Mexican artist wins prize
Two murals attributed to Banksy, which were originally painted in Bethlehem in 2007 and re-emerged amid controversy in an exhibition at the Keszler Gallery in the Hamptons, near New York, in August 2011, are due to go on show in Miami in December. The removal of the works, Stop and Search and Wet Dog, from the West Bank sparked fierce criticism from some in the trade.
A Mexican artist has won £40,000 after being named winner of this year’s Artes Mundi prize for contemporary art. Teresa Margolles was chosen from a shortlist of seven. Judges said they were struck by the “visceral power and urgency” of two works she submitted for the UK’s largest arts cash prize. Her work in Cardiff is influenced by the mortuary.

They staged a play U Never Know at Lamakaan on Saturday. “Story is about a teenager Jenny who is on her way to heaven and in order to earn

The rest of the story revolves around the difficulties she faces,” director of the play, Meenakshi Sridharan Ujwala Naidu, says. The saga of poor art
A group of artists that began attacking the values of established institutions of government, industry, and culture in the 1960s.
A
rte Povera (literally poor art) is a modern art movement. The term was introduced in Italy during the period of upheaval at the end of the 1960s, when artists were taking a radical stance. Artists began attacking the values of established institutions of government, industry, and culture, and even questioning whether art as the private expression of the indi-
vidual still had an ethical reason to exist.Their work marked a reaction against the modernist abstract painting that had dominated European art in the 1950s, hence much of the group’s work is sculptural. But the group also rejected American Minimalism, in particular what they perceived as its enthusiasm for technology. Italian art critic Germano Celant organised two exhibi-
tions in 1967 and 1968, followed by an influential book published by Electa in 1985 called Arte Povera Stories e protagonisti/Arte Povera. Histories and Protagonists, promoting the notion of a revolutionary art, free of convention, the power of structure, and the market place. Although Celant attempted to encompass the radical elements of the entire international scene, the term proper-
about a change in the society. Most of us are in our first year in different colleges in the city. I have taken this year off would be going abroad next year for further studies. We organise recreational activities, group debates and play as part of the organisation. Our dream is to hold on to Diya and let it grow so that we will also grow in the process. We have no intention of leaving Diya any time soon,” Meenakshi says. Diya had staged Why Me? at Lamakaan before U Never Know that told the story of a middle-aged man and his crazy wife. “Why Me was a satire on the life of a middle-aged man, wife and his gay brother-in-law. We have a cinematographer, editor, script-writer, actors, singers, musicians within the group so we hardly ask help from outside. We have been trained by professionals in the
ART FOR DUMMIES
workshops that we have attended and with this knowledge we are doing our best to take our message to the public,” she says. Apart from staging plays, Diya is also involved in making short films. “We have made three short films namely Alochana, I am in Love and an untitled one. These movies are in the editing phase and we plan to release them after the play. While Alochana depicts how friends influence our lives and decisions, I am in Love is on a guy who manages to win the love of his love. Through these short-films, we try to tackle the problems faced by the kids our age and about how they overcome them,” she says. World will surely be a much better place to live in if more such driven youngsters come forward and work towards turning their dreams into reality.
ly centered on a group of Italian artists who attacked the corporate mentality with an art of unconventional materials and style. They often used found objects in their works. Other early exponents of radical change in the visual arts include proto Arte Povera artists: Antoni Tàpies and the Dau al Set movement, Alberto Burri, Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana and Spatialism. Arte Povera’s interest in “poor” materials can be seen as related to Assemblage, an international trend of the 1950s and 1960s that used similar materials. Both movements marked a reaction against much of the abstract paintings that dominated art in the period.

2012 the ninth warmest year “Climate change is taking place before our eyes and will continue to do so as a result of the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which have risen constantly and again reached new records,”said World Meteorological Organisation SecretaryGeneral Michel Jarraud. This year is set to be the ninth warmest on record, according to the latest data.
More mountain gorillas
Contaminated fashion Some of the world’s best known fashion retailers are selling clothing contaminated with hazardous chemicals that form hormone-disrupting or cancer-causing chemicals when released into the environment, Greenpeace International report. The report, Toxic Threads – The Big Fashion Stitch-Up, covers tests on 141 clothing items and exposes the links between textile manufacturing facilities.
The world’s population of critically endangered mountain gorillas has risen to a total of 880 – up from the estimate of 786 animals in 2010. The new population numbers were released by the Uganda Wildlife Authority following a census of gorillas.Mountain gorillas live in only two places. One location is the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is entirely in Uganda.
The Earth is warming up
The chances of hitting the UN's global warming target are diminishing, but the goal can still be met if greenhouse-gas emissions fall by 15 per cent by 2020 say scientists.
I
n a study issued at the world climate talks in Doha, scientists cautioned against mounting pessimism that the UN’s objective of curbing warming to a safer two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) is now out of reach. “Limiting global warming below 2C, or even to below 1.5C, remains technically and economically feasible, but only with political ambitions backed by rapid action starting now,” the team said. “If nothing more is done except the current pledges, costs would be much higher to reach deeper reductions necessary, and/or the damage from climate impacts would be far greater.” In the runup to the 12-day
Limiting global warming below 2C, or even to below 1.5C, remains technically and economically feasible, but only with political ambitions backed by rapid action starting now. team of scientists UN talks which opened in Qatar on Monday, the World Bank gave a 20-per cent likelihood of a 4C (7.2 F) rise by 2100 and said a 3C (5.4 F) rise appeared likely. Separately, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) forecast a rise of 3-5C (5.4-9.0F) on the basis of current pledges. “The window for reversing emission trends is rapidly narrowing,” the “Climate Action Tracker” report issued in Doha on Friday said. “Emissions must be reduced by roughly 15 per cent from present levels by 2020 to be on a pathway holding warming below 2C” by 2100. At present, emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases, blamed for damaging the planet’s fragile climate system, are scaling new peaks. Levels of carbon dioxide —
the single most important manmade contributor to climate change — rose to 390.9 parts per million in 2011, which is 2.0 ppm higher than in 2010, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said on Tuesday. From 1990 to 2011, the warming effect of greenhouse gases has risen 30 per cent, it said. Scrutinising the actions of the four major emitters, the “Climate Action Tracker” said neither China, the United States,
the European Union nor Russia were making adequate pledges to tackle their pollution. But — with the exception of the United States — the pledges that they have made are likely to be met, it said. China has surged in rankings to become the world’s No.1 carbon polluter, voraciously burning coal to fuel its rise out of poverty. Right now, China is on track for emissions in 2020 of 14.4 gigatonnes, or billion tonnes, of
CO2 or its equivalent, said the report. But — according to China’s just-unveiled official plans — this “business-as-usual” figure will fall by 4.5 gigatonnes to 9.9 gigatonnes under an ambitious energy-efficiency programme. “If accurate, this would be the largest single absolute reduction for any country in the history of action on climate change,” said the report. “By comparison, the emis-
sions of the European Union in 2010 were 4.4 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.” The “Climate Action Tracker” is a regularly updated report compiled by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany; a non-profit German science and policy research organisation called Climate Analytics; and Ecofys, a European consultancy on renewable energy and carbon AFP efficiency.
Are governments meeting their targets?
E
cofys has been examining the policies in place to meet pledges for the US, Russia, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Australia and South Africa.
The Climate Action Tracker assessed the results from this analysis in the context of the ambition level of the pledges made by these countries. The aggregated emissions level from all coun-
tries’ pledges is still likely to induce warming exceeding 2degC by a wide margin, unless pledges are improved and more policies implemented on a national level. While we see some
improvement the fundamental problem remains: Few countries have policies in place to meet their pledges and even fewer have sufficiently ambitious pledges.

Limit carbs to dinner-time
Chocolate, a sweet sunscreen
An experimental diet with carbohydrates eaten mostly at dinner could benefit people suffering from severe and morbid obesity, according to new research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The diet influences secretion patters of hormones responsible for hunger and satiety, as well as hormones associated with metabolic syndrome.
A study shows that high-flavanol cocoa protects skin from ultraviolet rays. No, not when you slather it on the skin, but when you eat it. If you have a “bit of chocolate a day” habit, you might already have heard of some of the research surrounding the health benefits of chocolate, which in its purer forms has been tied to heart and metabolic health.
Children vulnerable to toxins Preschool children in particular, are at high risk for exposure to arsenic, dieldrin, DDE (a DDT metabolite), dioxins and acrylamide which are present in the food. These compounds have been linked to cancer, developmental disabilities, birth defects and other conditions. However, the study also points to dietary modifications that could mitigate risk.

The Meaty Matter
il l w
Choose meat that is naturally tender. For the perfect sausage, try parboiling them in a pan with water for five minutes before BBQing to lower the fat content. Also remember to prick them with the tip of a sharp knife to let some of the fat escape during cooking. l For lamb, coat a small roast in olive oil and dried Rosemary before sealing on both sides and covering to cook slowly on the plaque. l Poultry is a great healthy staple, but can often be a little bland. You’ve got many choices for flavouring poultry with marinades. While cooking, remember to baste poultry regularly to retain moisture and maximum flavour. To prevent burning or charring, don’t baste chicken during last 5 minutes of cooking time. l Pork is one of the simplest meats to barbecue. Lean tender chops and ribs work a treat when brushed with Smokey BBQ Marinade while grilling. l Prawns, fish and other seafood need very little cooking time so it’s best to save them for last if BBQing along with other meats. With seasoning, a little goes a long way. Try a little sprinkling of Lemon Pepper seasoning before grilling. l
Combine the yogurt, olive oil, garlic, lemon zest and juice, sea salt, mint, pepper and cumin. Coat the lamb cutlets with the mixture. Marinate for 2-4 hours in the fridge, turning at least once.
the temperature dips and the air gets crisper, it’s time to dust off your barbecue equipment and start grilling. An open-air barbecue makes for a great evening with friends. Postnoon gives you tips on how to become the BBQ boss.

Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
There are three things you want to look for in BBQ meat. l First, the meat must be fresh and never frozen. Make sure it’s still brightly coloured and there are no extra juices in the package. l Second, good BBQ meat needs to have a layer of fat on it. If you want to reduce fat, trim the meat after it cooks instead of before. l Third, it needs to have an even thickness. Meat that is thicker in one section than another is hard to cook evenly. You’ll end up with part of it either undercooked or overcooked.

hen was the last time you visited a restaurant and started planning your next visit to it while indulging in some cheesy delights? Salz does exactly that to you. The restaurant offers so many signature dishes and cocktails that you just have to return to experience it all. A first-timer to Salz, I was overwhelmed by the variety of starters they had on offer — and since each one sounded so unique, I was tempted to try all. Sadly, that's something you just can't digest. So, with a lot of help from head chef G Suman Chakravarthy, I tasted the best they had to offer. Our lunch began with two signature cocktails -— a watermelon caprioska and an appletine. While I think both drinks would be a tad more fun during the summers, they worked. Another drink worth trying is the black rock cosmo, which is like any other cosmopolitan, it's just that this one is made of vodka and black currant juice... sounds tempting right? Salz, which is a strictly evening place thanks to its location bang opposite the KBR Park, is one of those finedining experiences you’d like to share with your girlfriend/ boyfriend. The ambiance is simple and classy, the music is

just right and the service is of course, impeccable. Coming to the food, my Salz food experience kicked off with a unique starter called chicken crispers, which all of you must try. It looked like the regular chicken strips that a few burgers joints boast of, but that’s just the look part of it. The well-cooked chicken strips are coated with cornflakes to give it a crunchy exterior. Even when I read the description on the menu, I just took it

I was wrong and yes, pleasantly surprised. I could have never imagined that cornflakes could make chicken taste so good. Then came the Mexican vegetable rolls which were served with hummus and a salsa-like sauce. The rolls that looked like spring rolls were stuffed with bell peppers and cheese generously. Needless to say, they were tasty too. Chicken quesadillas, chicken wings and a watermelon feta salad were other short-eats that dressed up my
lunch table. While the chicken wings were regular, the quesadillas were something of an interesting mix of cheese, chicken and bell peppers. The snacks were served with a spicy chipotle sauce that made the cheesiness less overwhelming. The watermelon feta cheese salad didn’t work for me immediately, but it did grew as I took chunkier bites. And, yes, I would ask for that salad when I go next. Our main course consisted of their hottest-selling dish called the half broast chicken. Two pieces of chunky chicken covered in BBQ sauce and served with steamed broccoli and other vegetables looked like a meal for the Atkin’s diet follower. Again, I was wrong. The chicken was cooked fine and grew on my palette with each bite. After devouring so many starters and that chunky chicken, I was practically holding my stomach. But, obviously, my luncheon had to end on a sweet note. And, to come to Salz and not indulge in their desserts is like going for a movie and not having popcorn. I was pulled to the chocolatiest dessert on the menu — the chocolate mud pie. While that was being readied, I was served a dessert called panacotta. It was described as an Italian dessert made of cream flavoured with vanilla and served with blueberry sauce. My description – it was heaven. It beat my chocolate dessert without lifting a finger. It was the perfect ending to a perfect lunch.

M AHESH B ABU – OKKADU
M
ahesh Babu, Bhumika starrer Okkadu is a perfect example of what a great cast and a gripping screenplay can do to a film. Directed by Gunasekhar, Okkadu was a major breakthrough film for Mahesh Babu. His performance was so intense that it became his signature style for almost seven years before Khaleja broke the mould. The film’s success made him a star and it also earned his first Filmfare Award. Okkadu was later remade in Tamil, Kannada and Boney Kapoor recently announced that he’s producing the Hindi remake with Arjun Kapoor in lead role.
VENKATESH – GANESH
V
enkatesh’s tryst with success needs no introduction and he had already wowed the audience in several films like Prema, Bobbili Raja, Shatruvu and Chanti among many other films. But his performance in Ganesh was on a whole different level. Directed by Tirupati Swamy, the film revolves around an angry young man who fights against the corruption in hospitals. Venkatesh goes full throttle in terms of his performance and when the flashback is revealed, there weren’t many, especially women, who wouldn’t have shed tears. Quite often, Ganesh is overlooked while talking about Venkatesh’s finest performances, but it’s a testimony to his remarkable ability to pull off even a emotional roller coaster like this where the stakes were so high.
The Game Changers
Daniel Day-Lewis’ stellar performance in Lincoln is being hailed as one of the finest performances in recent times. But you don’t have to look at Hollywood for actors who carried the entire film on their shoulders. Here are five such actors from Tollywood who enthralled us with their performances B ALAKRISHNA – SAMARASIMHA REDDY
V
iolence in Telugu cinema had hit a whole new level in late 90s and the film that started the trend was Balakrishna starrer Samarasimha Reddy. Directed by B Gopal, it was among the first few films which popularized factionism in Telugu cinema. Balakrishna made a stellar comeback with this film and the dialogues about pride and masculinity in this film are the stuff of legends. One of the best scenes in the film involves Balakrishna throwing an open challenge at his opponent at a railway station to prove his might. The film had become so popular that it spun off a whole new genre in Telugu cinema and several actors and comedians have spoofed Balakrishna’s dialogues and mannerism in subsequent films.
CHIRANJEEVI – TAGORE
NAGARJUNA – ANNAMAYYA
T
A
agore is about a man who resolves to eliminate corruption from all walks of life and to achieve his goal he forms an Anti-Corruption Force (ACF) who collect information about every corrupt official working in the government. Chiranjeevi played the lead role and his performance was so inspiring that hundreds of youngsters began emulating the ideals that Chiranjeevi had professed in the film. His onscreen charisma was at its zenith back then and in many ways Tagore sowed the seeds for Chiranjeevi’s journey into politics.
nnamayya, which released back in 1997, was a game changer for both its director K Raghavendra Rao and Nagarjuna who played the eponymous role. Not many contemporary Telugu actors had taken the risk of donning a role like this and Nagarjuna embraced the role of Annamayya so well that it’s hard to imagine any other actor performing so well. The charm in his performance lies in the change he undergoes after he realises that he must devote himself to the God. Right from the music to Nagarjuna’s performance, everything about Annamayya is just about perfect and in the end quite overwhelming. Nagarjuna won a National Special Jury Award and a Nandi award for his performance.

S
uperstar Salman Khan asserts that Dabangg 2 is not a copy of the first film and the audience should consider it as a movie after interval. “It’s not the same. We are not copying and giving you the same picture. It’s a different film,” the 47-year-old said here Friday. “Dabangg was of a particular genre and now a similar genre film is coming out with Dabangg 2,” he said on the sets of Bigg Boss 6 where he launched the item song Fevicol se from his new film Dabangg 2. The song features Kareena Kapoor. “Consider part one (Dabangg) as the one before interval and this (Dabangg 2) as after the interval,” he added. Earlier, the actor launched the promo of the new film. Asked why he chose to promote Dabangg 2 on Bigg Boss, he said: “I am the host of Bigg Boss. Wherever I get time and wherever the channel feels that Dabangg 2 promotions can be done, they do it.” Directed by Arbaaz Khan, Dabangg 2 also features Sonakshi Sinha and is slated for a December 21 release. My BBM (BlackBerry messenger) status will also be ‘pata le mujhe missed call se’, I think it’s fun and everybody is going to be talking about it,” the 32-year-old said on Friday on the sets of Bigg Boss 6 where she launched the song. I just work and entertain: Akshay
W
ith two of his films — Housefull 2 and Rowdy Rathore —having made it to the `100 crore club, Akshay Kumar has been tagged as one of Bollywood’s most bankable actor. Though the actor feels the pressure of success, he says once a film releases, he doesn’t dwell too much upon its box-office performance. “Pressure comes as the film nears its release time. But after that if it doesn’t work, I am on the next film. But I don’t take a big hit too seriously also, because the next Friday you have to go in the same circle... you never know what will happen next Friday. I just take it as it comes. I just work and enter-
tain,” Akshay said during an interaction. Akshay made his Bollywood debut with 1991 film Saugandh and went on to acquire the tag of Khiladi Kumar for his inclination towards action. Over the years, the actor has however shifted his focus to comedies. IANS

And it is by sheer luck that they end up at the same place where they have this conversation and whether it is a solution for all their problems or not is something for the audience to mull over. “This film is an interesting experiment. 'Talaash' F expected to earn `15 cr on opening day
rom rave reviews to overwhelming footfalls, Aamir Khan's Talaash has hit the bull's eye, despite the fact it has come out during non-festive season. Trade pundits predict that the film is likely to collect `15 crore on its opening day. Usually, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan choose to release their films during holiday season in a bid to attract more audiences, however, Aamir defied the norm by releasing Talaash during a non-festive weekend. If trade pundits are to be believed the film is likely to rake in `15 crore net at the Indian box office on the very first day. The suspense thriller, starring Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor, is expected to beat the opening collections of Raaz (`10.50 crore), Bol Bachchan (`11.75 crore), Cocktail (`10.75 crore), Rajneeti ( `10.50 crore), Barfi! Who won this gender argument? Men's Computer Gender Group - La computer The men's group decided that computers should definitely be female: ‘la computer’ because: No one but their creator understands their internal logic. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for possible later retrieval. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your pay cheque (check) on accessories for it.
Women's Computer Gender Group - Le computer The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be male: 'le computer' . Here is the ladies reasoning: In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you' d waited a little longer, you could have got a better model.

THE CELEBRITY AND HER MUGSHOTS
LINDSAY LOHAN
From cutsie to floozy in 15 short years In 15 years Lindsay Lohan has gone from being the cherub in Parent Trap to celebrity jailbird, a sort of female version of Charlie Sheen. On Friday she was in trouble with the law again and her latest film Liz & Dick has been savaged by critics. We walk you through her life in pictures.

ours after Lindsay Lohan star was arrested (and then released) for allegedly assaulting Tiffany Mitchell at New York City's Avenue lounge, she was charged with lying to police in relation to her June 8
Porsche crash in Santa Monica, California. The Santa Monica City Attorney's Office charged the Mean Girls star with willingly resisting, obstructing, or delaying an officer in the course of their duties, providing false information to an officer, and
reckless driving, E! News confirms. All of these charges are misdemeanors, and a court date has not yet been set at this time. Criminal justice expert Wendy Feldman, who is not involved with Lindsay, talked to E! News about the actress's most
recent troubles and the possibility of Thursday's alleged assault being a violation of her ongoing probation. “Even though she hasn't been convicted yet, when a judge looks at the big picture, the allegations and arrests count,” said
(Clockwise from left) In Disney's 1998 family comedy The Parent Trap, a remake of the 1961 movie Lohan played dual roles of estranged twins who try to reunite their long-divorced parents. Critic Kenneth Turan called Lohan “the soul of this film as much as Hayley Mills was of the original”, going on to say that “she is more adept than her predecessor at creating two distinct personalities”. The film won Lohan a Young Artist Award for best performance in a feature film as well as a three-film contract with Disney l Freaky Friday earned Lohan the award for Breakthrough Performance at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards and, as of 2012, it remains her most commercially successful film, earning $160 million worldwide. l Lohan stars as Elizabeth Taylor in the 2012 biographical TV movie Liz & Dick. It premiered on the Lifetime cable channel in November. Reviews of Lohan's performance in the film were largely, but not unanimously, negative. The Hollywood Reporter said she was "woeful".l In 2005 Lohan starred in the comedy Herbie: Fully Loaded, the fifth film in the series with Herbie. Fully Loaded earned $144 million worldwide and received mixed reviews.

NZ stunned by England WELLINGTON: The All Blacks’ humbling 38-21 defeat at the hands of England “ruined” their European tour and took the shine off a successful season, New Zealand press reports said Sunday. The world champions’ run of 20 Tests without defeat was brought to a shuddering halt by a rampant home side at Twickenham on Saturday, who recorded their record margin of victory and biggest score against the All Blacks. “We don’t have an excuse —
we just got beaten by a better side,” said coach Steve Hansen, whose team were vastly more experienced that the England line-up. But Fairfax rugby correspondent Liam Napier said the performance was a “sour way” to end the year and was comparable to a first-year student turning the tables on the head prefect. It was the All Blacks’ first loss on their end-of-year northern tour in a decade and their first defeat this year but Napier said the “timid display ruined

the European tour, tainted their season”. He questioned whether the “fallout and claims of thuggery” following Andrew Hore’s fiveweek suspension for striking Wales lock Bradley Davies the previous week had affected the team. There was a distinct lack of physicality and aggression in the collisions, the All Blacks were bullied at the breakdown and “pinned up against the wall by a raw and inexperienced English side. It was astonishing AFP to watch.”

Oosthuizen, Schwartzel put pressure on Kaymer SUN CITY, SOUTH AFRICA: South Africans Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel were hot on the heels of leader Martin Kaymer from Germany after three rounds of the Nedbank Golf Challenge on Saturday. Consistent play since the past three days gave Kaymer the lead after he finished with a five-under-par 211 at the 7,162-metre Gary Player Country Club. The former world number four had started the day badly with a bogey on the par-four third, but he then recovered well with a steady performance and then carded three birdies. The South Africans are breathing down his neck, though, with 2010 Open Champion Oosthuizen just one stroke behind and 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel trailing by two. Oosthuizen shot the best round of the day with three-under-par 69, thanks to three birdies, despite bogeys on the fifth and tenth and several missed putts that could have won strokes. The highest-ranked of the 12 elite players, Englishman Justin Rose, also hit 69 in his best round yet in the tournament. The world number four carded a 10-stroke improvement on his Friday performance of 79. Defending champion Lee Westwood remains in the running for a record third consecutive victory at the African 'major'. The Englishman is tied with American Bill Haas at two-under-par 214, trailing leader Kaymer by three. Round two leader Scotsman Paul Lawrie started the day with a bogey on the first hole and slid further back with bogeys on the third, fifth, eighth, eleventh and thirteenth to card two-over-par 75.

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIFORNIA: Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell fired a bogey free four-under par 68 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead over Keegan Bradley going into the final round of the World Challenge. McDowell had a 54-hole
total of 13-under 203 at Sherwood Country Club and though his three-stroke overnight lead slipped a notch, he is still well-placed to capture his first victory since he won this tournament in 2010. That victory capped an outstanding season for McDowell, in which he won the US Open up the Pacific
coast at Pebble Beach and delivered the clinching point in Europe's Ryder Cup win. This year a victory in the unofficial event hosted by Tiger Woods would give a sweet taste to a mixed season in which he settled for a tie for second at the US Open, and a tie for fifth at the British Open.
"It would be nice to kind of get the reward, because I feel like I've been playing pretty solidly for a couple of months and got nothing from it," said the player, who struggled in this year's Ryder Cup, again won by Europe. On Sunday, McDowell will play alongside 2011 PGA Championship winner Bradley, who had six birdies in his five-under 67 and was alone in second place on 205. Three shots further back was tournament host Woods, who carded his second straight 69 and Bo Van Pelt, who hit a 70 for 208. With the rain-softened Sherwood layout again playing long, McDowell drained lengthy birdie putts at the second and fourth holes, adding birdies at the ninth and 11th before parring his way in. "Bogey-free is always nice on any golf course," McDowell said. "It would have been nice to pick a few more up on the way in I guess, finishing with seven straight pars when there are some chances out there. "But two shots ahead going into Sunday, I'll take that any week, anywhere, any time. It's right where you need to be."

Sauber have already confirmed the signings of Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Gutierrez while Caterham has Charles Pic returning for 2013. Amla punishes Australia PERTH, AUSTRALIA: Hashim Amla reached his 18th Test century as South Africa built a potentially decisive lead on day three of the third and final Test against Australia at the WACA Ground on Sunday. Australia's hopes of claiming the top ranking in Test cricket were all but dashed, with the Proteas 320 for three at lunch, an overall lead of 382 runs with seven wickets in hand and more than two days to play. Amla was on 149, and AB de Villiers was on 18, with South Africa only needing to win or draw the match to retain the number one Test ranking. South Africa made 225 in their first innings, and Australia replied with 163. After resuming on 99 not out, Amla took just three balls to reach his century, working a single to fine leg from the bowling of Mitchell Johnson to reach the milestone in just 87 balls. Amla, who at times appeared to treat the second-string Australian attack with contempt as he moved around the crease to facilitate his shot selection, had faced 160 balls, hitting 17 boundaries. He had a lucky escape on 108,
when Mike Hussey in the gully was unable to hang on to a tough chance as Amla mistimed a slash at a wide full toss from Johnson. AFP

Gujarat were comfortably placed at 254 for two at stumps and are well on course to post a big first innings total at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium. Hyderabad's decision to field first backfired as Smit and Gohel raised 163 runs for the opening

Dennis Lillee questions commitment PERTH, AUSTRALIA: Fast
bowling great Dennis Lillee has questioned the workrate of Australia's current crop of quicks after injury and fatigue sidelined several pacemen ahead of the final South Africa Test. Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation during the third Test in Perth, Lillee said the home team's fast bowling injury woes could be traced to their inadequate preparation. Australia were forced to change all three of their frontline bowlers for Perth, with Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus both ruled out due to fatigue after the gruelling second Test in Adelaide. James Pattinson has been sidelined for the rest of the summer with a side injury — his fourth breakdown this year — with fellow quick Pat Cummins also out with a injury.
Misbah has no intentions to retire KARACHI: Pakistan's Test and One-day captain, Misbah-ulHaq has strongly defended his performance as both skipper and batsman, insisting that he had no intentions to retire in the near future. Misbah, 38, who has come under criticism for his slow batting and captaincy, insisted he would continue playing as long as he retained his passion for the sport. "There is this misconception in our country that a player who is of my age shouldn't be playing and should retire. My philosophy is age does not matter as long as I retain my passion to perform at the international level and I am doing this," he said. "People say I bat slowly but I know I have a role to play in the team and I do that. People remember how I got out in the 2007 World T20
final against India, they don't remember how we got to that stage. People say I am not a finisher and have not scored a
century in One-day cricket but I can recount many innings when I remained unbeaten and finished matches." The Pakistan skipper also made it clear that fans, the media and selectors needed to change their perception about senior players. "I think what is most important for us is that we bring consistency in our selection and allow players a proper chance to settle down in the team. A player needs to know clearly how much the selectors and team management are willing to go with him. I have as captain tried to introduce consistency in the team but have not always been successful in this." "We also need to value our players in whom we have invested a lot and we need to utilise their seniority and experience properly and consistently," Misbah said.

Persie had the final say to send Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League following a seven-goal thriller at Reading that United won 4-3 on Saturday. Alex Ferguson’s side regained top spot from neighbours Manchester City, moving three points clear in the process, but, once again, they had to do it the hard way. The Red Devils have now come from behind to win seven times this season. They completed the task here in dramatic fashion after squeezing home following seven first-half goals. The visitors fell behind to Hal Robson-Kanu’s opener before Anderson and Wayne Rooney’s penalty looked to have put them in control. But two headers from Adam Le Fondre and Sean Morrison, both from identical corners, would have left Ferguson at his wits’ end.

Swansea piled on the misery for Arsenal as Michu scored twice in the closing minutes to clinch a shock 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Spanish forward Michu, a £2 million signing from Rayo Vallecano this past July, underlined his growing reputation as the bargain buy of the season with a pair of clinical finishes on the counter attack, prompting Arsenal’s fans to unleash a torrent of abuse at manager Arsene Wenger and his players at full-time.

LIVERPOOL BEAT SOUTHAMPTON
Marouane Fellaini played a decisive role at both ends of the pitch as Everton held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Fellaini, Everton’s outstanding player of the season, put Everton ahead with his eighth goal of the campaign on a ground at which his side had won on four of their previous five visits. It was Fellaini’s tug on Edin Dzeko that led to the penalty, which Carlos Tevez scored.
Rafael Benitez concedes that the task of reviving Chelsea could turn out to be a bigger challenge than he had envisaged in the wake of his side’s 3-1 defeat at West Ham United. After little more than a week in charge, Benitez has overseen two scoreless draws and an unexpected reverse that has left the club’s Premier League title ambitions severely dented. That run has done nothing to get those supporters disgruntled by the dismissal of Roberto Di Matteo.
Daniel Agger’s first goal of the season earned stuttering Liverpool a 1-0 win at home to promoted Southampton on Saturday, giving the Reds just their second Premier League victory in seven matches. Agger struck three minutes before half-time to clinch only a fourth win of the campaign for Brendan Rodgers’ men, as the Reds bounced back from Wednesday’s 2-1 reverse at Tottenham.

Barca have now put together 13 wins and a draw from their first 14 matches to beat the previous best start in the Spanish top flight set by Real Madrid in the 1991-92 season. “It is great to have achieved this but I am happier still with the performance of my players and that even at 5-1 we continued to keep pressing and trying to score,” said Barca coach Tito Vilanova. “There are still things we can improve on and we can still work harder.” Gerard Pique put the Catalan side ahead after 22 minutes followed quickly by Messi’s first, which came off defender Fernando Amorebieta on the line.
