t’s been a tough year for teachers across the City what with the unexpected general strike that forced them to forego weekends and other public holidays and put in longer hours to complete the syllabus for their students. But the Christmas break came as a

welcome respite for most of them. With the government having postponed midterm exams and announcing a 10day break, teachers across the City have finally had a chance to put up their feet and relax. “Staying at home and doing nothing is such a good feeling. It’s such a relief to get a break. During Ayesha Fatima the strike period students used to get a break but we had to go to school. I have been at home and been spending quality time with my family. I also used this opportunity to catch up with old friends and all the sit-coms that I had been other-

Not having to spend their vacations checking exam papers was the icing on the cake for a few teachers. “For the first time in 16 years I have got holidays with no paper checking involved. It is indeed a vacation without any commitments. I have been spending time with my family and Padamaja finally I got some time to organise a New Year’s party at

my place,” says Padamaja Wathada, who works with Centenary Baptist Church School. For others this was the perfect opportunity to plan a trip out of town leaving behind all cares and worries. “I went to Vizag and Araku Valley for a short but utterly rejuvenating vacation. As a family it’s very important to spend some quality time together and that happens only when we are somewhere far away from work,” believes Swathi K, a teacher with Pallavi Model School. The scene is not as pretty for every teacher in town. Some of them had to declare their own holiday. “I have always looked forward to my winter break. Being a corporate school we don’t get winter holi-

days which is why I took a 10 day break. I used this time to go to Bangalore spending time in my ashram and gaining some good karma,” says Suseetha S, Chaitanya Public School. However, there are a dedicated few who despite Muranali M the break spent their days working from home. “We used these holidays to make a few changes in our school. For instance, we worked on making new charts and modules that will be a great change for our students when they come back from their vacations,” says Muranali M, of Euro school, Bowenpally.

No wonder the Force is looking for a makeover and has taken it up with the CM himself. According to sources close to the DGP, they cops want to adopt a corporate style to endear public. First on the list is an attractive model police station painted with ‘cool’ colours compared to old police stations with yellow, red and with navy blue. The department is building one such station on pilot basis, which would be showcased to the CM soon. Earlier there were public relations officers to deal with people who come to register complaints. But the PRO system failed and the police are still unable to

become people friendly. In order to give a pleasant face to the police station, there would be trained women staff who would welcome and usher complainants and guide them through the process of filing FIRs. These personnel will be conversant in three languages — Telugu, Hindi and English — and will be trained in excellent counselling. Private agencies will be supplying these staff as the department is already understaffed. The CM has given green signal to the proposal .

It is learnt that he would be seeking clearance on this aspect from the Centre as the Cabinet expansion will not take place immediately. Talking to some senior leaders at the Camp Office on New Year’s Eve, the CM said that it was time they reward the loyal workers. It is reported that he wanted to do the Cabinet reshuffle as well as filling up the nominated posts, but that was not happening time and again due to various reasons. He told that them that it will be done at the earliest, may be after Sankranti. The main objective is to strengthen the party from the grassroot level and retain power in the 2014 elections. “I will coordinate with everyone from grassroot-level

workers to the party president” he said. He recommended that the leaders should see that the schemes being implemented by the government reach the targeted groups. The CM told some Telangana leaders that “the Congress has a dedicated force in the State and the new parties will not affect the ruling party.” The CM’s unity exercise began a talk to his colleagues about staying together and was followed by his assurance on the nominated posts. He also advised them to maintain utmost restraint while talking to the media. Talking to Postnoon, some leaders opined that there was a lot of change in the chief ministers attitude’.

Hockey player fatally stabbed in Vizag

uring the 2012 New Year Day celebrations, a young hockey player was fatally stabbed in the Kailasapuram Port Grounds in the early hours of Sunday. According to the police, the assailant, victim’s junior player Ratna Kumar, grabbed a knife meant to cut a cake and stabbed Bhaskar Rao in his stomach. The State-level hockey player died on the spot. Earlier, there was a heated argument and a clash between the two after midnight. A grievously injured Bhaskar was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed.

The election for mayor and deputy-mayor’s post is scheduled to be held on January 3. It may be recalled that a few days ago after holding discussions with all the party corpora-

tors, the PCC president constituted a two member committee consisting of senior party leaders K Satyanarayana and DV Satyanarayana to discuss and take the views of every corporator of the party on the deputymayor candidate. During the meeting with the PCC president, all the corporators entrusted the responsibility of electing the deputy mayor candidate to the party high command. On the other hand, the two member committee constituted by the PCC president has been

holding discussions with party corporators since the last few days. During these meetings, many aspirants requested the committee members to propose their name for the deputymayor’s post. The committee is also likely to submit its report to Botsa after the conclusion of the discussions. Hyderabad District collector Natarajan Gulzar, who has been appointed as election officer by the State election commission, will conduct the mayor and deputy mayor elections. The

election had been postponed from December 30, 2011 to January 3, 2012, this month following a request by Congress party MPs. Many corporators in the party are aspiring for the deputy mayor’s post. The issue of partial withdrawal of AFSPA was raised by Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah in the middle of last year, citing the decreasing violence in some districts. He also received support from Union home minister P Chidambaram. However, defence minister AK Antony and the armed forces have opposed the move tooth and nail, resulting in the central and the state governments agreeing to discuss the issue further before a decision is taken.

Arab League monitors to be withdrawn from Syria? A n advisory body to the Arab League has called for the organisation’s observers to be withdrawn from Syria because of the ongoing crackdown on protests. The speaker of the Arab Parliament said the monitors had to leave “considering the continued killing of innocent civilians by the Syrian regime”. There has been no let-up in the violence since the observers started their work on Tuesday. Their mission is to monitor a peace plan drawn up by the Arab League. The Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Salem al-Diqbassi, said in a statement that the continuing repression “in the presence of Arab monitors has roused the anger of Arab people and negates the purpose of sending a fact-finding mission”. “This is giving the Syrian regime an Arab cover for continuing its inhumane actions under the eyes and ears of the Arab League,” Mr Diqbassi added. ran has successfully test-fired a medium-range surface-to-air missile during military exercises in the Gulf, the official Irna news agency reports. Iranian naval commander Mahmoud Mousavi was quoted as saying the missile was equipped with the “latest technology” and “intelligent systems”. The test comes a day after he denied earlier state media reports that Iran had test-fired longrange missiles. He said on Saturday missile launches would take place “in the coming days”. Iran’s 10 days of naval exercises began last week and are taking place in international waters to the east of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

‘Nothing frightening’ Correspondents say many demonstrators are becoming frustrated at the league’s inability to stop the violence. About 60 monitors are in the country to verify the implementation of the Arab League plan, which calls for an end to all fighting, the withdrawal of troops from the streets and the release of political prisoners.

Although some tanks have reportedly pulled back, snipers have been visible during demonstrations and rallies. The Local Co-ordination Committees, a network of anti-government groups inside Syria, said at least six people had died in various parts of Syria on Sunday. More than 150 people have been killed since the monitors arrived in the country, according to activists. The UN says puts the number of deaths in the 10month uprising at 5,000.

There has also been criticism of the head of the monitoring team, Sudanese Gen Mustafa alDabi - who is regarded by some as biased towards the Syrian government. On Saturday he appeared to contradict one of his officials who was quoted as saying during a visit to the southern city of Deraa that he and other monitors had seen government snipers “with our own eyes”. Gen Dabi later told the BBC that the observer had made no such claim and was only speaking hypothetically. On Thursday, after a visit to the restive northern city of Homs, Gen Dabi said that “some places looked a bit of a mess but there was nothing frightening”. The general has held a number of senior posts in Sudan, including in the troubled Darfur region. The government of President Bashar al-Assad says it is fighting armed groups and that 2,000 security forces personnel have died. Casualty figures and other information are hard to verify as most foreign media are barred from reporting freely in Syria.

Nasa’s ‘Grail twins’ put in orbit

he US space agency (Nasa) has succeeded in placing two new satellites in orbit around the Moon. Both spacecraft were put in elliptical paths around the lunar body over the weekend after performing braking manoeuvres following their more than 100-day journey from Earth. The identical Grail twins are to map gravity variations across the lunar body in unprecedented detail. This will help scientists refine our theories for how the Moon formed. It will also enable them to test new ideas, such as the provocative suggestion made earlier this year that there were probably two moons in the sky above Earth billions of years ago. “Grail is a journey to the centre of the Moon and it will use exceedingly precise measurements of gravity to reveal what the inside of the Moon is like,” a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researcher said. “This information will be combined with other remarkable observations that have been taken by other satellites before, and together they will enable us to reconstruct the Moon’s early evolution.” The 300kg Grail spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, last September. This weekend, they approached the Moon over the south pole, 25 hours apart. Each satellite in turn fired its main engine to slow it and put it in an elliptical orbit around the lunar sphere. This orbit has a period of 11.5 hours and must now gradually be reduced in size and circularised before any science can begin. A series of further burns on each spacecraft should achieve this goal by March. The twins will then map the small variations

HYDERABAD: “Small scale industries (SSI) are in a deep crisis. It may not be true of all the industries, but surely 80 per cent of them are reeling under difficult times. Our main concern is lack of adequate power supply,” says J Nageswara Rao, secretary, Federation of Andhra Pradesh Small Industries Associations (FAPSIA). “Of the two-day official power cut, authorities, are taking the excuse that one of

them goes as a regular holiday. Thus, the small industries are left with just one day as a power holiday. Manufacturing in small scale industries is an on-going process. We work 365 days and never have weekly holidays. We provide holidays to our workers shift wise. “After our agitation, AP Transco has brought down the power holiday to just one. They promised us that there will be no power holiday at all from 2012, and they will also lift the ‘unofficial’ power cuts in a

phased manner. Apart from a weekly power holiday, the SSIs were slapped with power cuts during peak hours from 6.30pm to 10.30pm every day, he said in an interaction with Postnoon. V Hanumantha Rao, president of FAPSIA, said that the superintending engineers of the industrial estates hinted at power shortage in the coming for the coming months too. Power had to be purchased according to the individual needs of industries. “However, the cost of each unit will be Rs9, which is double the tariff of what we are paying now. We rejected the offer straightaway as industry cannot absorb that burden, he said. Those who could afford power at this prohibitive cost would get uninterrupted supply, lest they would have to manage with just 80 per cent of supply in January and February, 60 per cent in March and April and 70 per cent in May, he disclosed. There was a contradiction in what they said. “We never faced power crisis during the rainy season. I don’t know how many of them will survive and go through this crisis,” he added. Micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector was contributing 40 per cent to India’s overall manufacturing, 60 per cent to overall employment, and 42 per cent to overall exports. It generates 20 employees for an investment of Rs 1 crore. In contrast, the large-scale industries provide work for only two people.

RBI to ease rates

he Reserve Bank of India is likely to begin easing monetary policy to address concerns about economic growth, Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said in a BBC interview, reiterating comments made by the RBI when it kept rates unchanged on December 16, according to a Reuters report. “From here on, we could expect reversal of monetary tightening. But it’s difficult to say when that will take place and in what shape it will roll out,” Subbarao said in an interview published on the BBC website on Monday. The RBI raised its key interest rates 13 times since March 2010, but kept rates on hold on December 16 and sent a strong signal that its next move was likely to be an easing. Subbarao reiterated that growth was likely to be a bigger concern in 2012, although the risk of inflation remained, largely because of a weakening rupee. “It is just that (through) much of 2011, inflation was so high that we had to give higher priority to inflation,” Subbarao said. “But going forward we acknowledged that growth is going to be a concern. “In fact, in the December statement, we said growth is a serious concern, so I think the balance between growth and inflation will shift in 2012,” he said.

NEW DELHI: Chinese manufacturers are increasingly “faking” popular Indian products of consumer goods giants such as Dabur and ITC, undermining the legitimacy of brands and causing losses worth as much as $5 billion annually, officials said. “A lot of counterfeit Dabur products are made in China. We have conducted at least 20 raids in China but no proper action has been taken by the Chinese,” said Ashok Jain, general manager of finance at Dabur India, the country’s fourth largest FMCG firm. He said such fake products manufactured in China with “Made-in-India” tag are supplied across the world, mostly in India and African countries. “It causes huge damage to the brand. Those fake products are obviously not up to our standards and supplied at very low prices,” Jain said. Dabur, which has nearly $4 billion market capitalisation,

operates in key consumer product categories like healthcare, skin care, hair care and oral care. The company’s revenue last fiscal was $910 million. Pradeep Dixit, a senior official of ITC, a $33-billion conglomerate, said the popular FMCG brands of the company were counterfeited by unscrupulous firms and supplied in domestic as well as foreign markets. “Our popular cigarette brand

is faked and supplied widely in the states like Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh,” he said. “China is a big problem everybody is facing,” said S.K. Goel, chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, said. Goel said the big international brands like Nokia, Adidas, Reebok and Nivea were also widely counterfeited in China and supplied in India and other parts of the world.

Chinese manufacturers are also faking drugs, endangering lives of patients. Fake drugs, carrying “Made in India” tags, supplied from China were recently detained in Nigeria and other African countries. KK Vyas, Delhi’s deputy commissioner of police (crime), said emphasised on the need for enhancing punishment for

unscrupulous manufacturers and importers. “Punishment needs to be enhanced. Also there is need that judiciary addresses these issues quickly.” “Counterfeiting is a big menace. It is hurting everybody — consumers, industry and the exchequer,” said Anil Rajput, chairman of the anti-smuggling and anticounterfeiting committee of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Recently, FICCI formed a panel called “FICCI-Cascade” that expands into a committee on antismuggling and counterfeiting activities destroying the economy. Chaired by Rajput, the committee is working closely with the government to curb this menace. According to a report by think tank Indiaforensic Research Foundation, the total loss to the economy annually due to crimes such as counterfeiting, commercial fraud, smuggling, drug trafficking, bank fraud, tax evasion and graft is estimated at Rs22,528 crore. National Disaster Management Authority was formed in 2005 in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami that killed about 10,000 in India and 2.5 lakh people across the world. Though governments of southern states, especially Tamil Nadu, swung into action and initiated preparations it came short of expectations. During the 2005 floods Jayalalithaa did not hesitate to wade in waist-deep water to supervise relief and rescue operations but the same enthusiasm was conspicuous by its absence this time. Such high casualties despite spending thousands of crores and establishing a behemoth organisation for disaster management is not acceptable. It’s high time the government shook off its lethargic complacence and plug holes in the operations of such mechanisms so that we are better prepared and will have less to regret.

Several rackets are able to run posh brothels in residential areas because there is a massive demand which generates supply. We need to move beyond the moralistic approach and understand that the world’s oldest profession cannot be wished away. The government must act to remove the social and economic conditions which force women into this profession. It is the same story every year. The prime minister has personally assured the country that he will work to ensure that we have a robust economy and an honest and efficient government. However, like all New Year resolutions, this too will never see the light of day. Does not every prime minister give the same hollow assurances? It's like it’s a New Year, so new resolutions, but people don't change, do they? It is shameful that a prime minister has to apologise to a nation for his men being corrupt.

It’s shocking that these many accidents occurred on New Year’s eve despite the precautions that the police announced. It appears they were not actually on the spot. One of the accidents reported involved five people drunk on a bike. It’s hard to believe that these youngsters managed to keep away from the eyes of the cops. e all love a good winter, especially after the hot and sultry summers. The cold and tranquil winter mornings bring about a sense of calm. Early in the morning parks are bustling with city joggers as they enjoy the beauty of their surroundings. But behind the serene imagery is a very common downslide of modernisation known as ‘smog.’

What is Smog? Smog is often confused with fog. In simple terms, smog is a form of air pollution. It occurs when a number of minute air pollutants react with sunlight and heat. Smog is present throughout the year but is at its peak during winters where cold air and any pollutant in the air get trapped below a blanket of warm air resulting in winter smog.

It’s not all hunky dory Winter is a season where a number of infections and illnesses are on the rise. So in such a season what effects does smog have? According to Dr

Pradhyut Waghray, MD, Kunal Institute of Medical Specialities and senior pulmonologist Apollo Hospital, “Smog does not directly cause diseases but can aggravate various chest and respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchial allergies.” Children and elderly people are affected a great deal by smog, he adds. “There are an increasing number of cases of wheezing. Even smokers with allergies can be affected. Many cases of influenza are also seen during this season,” he adds. As a preventive measure many a times it is advised to

avoid exercising in traffic congested areas as well as avoiding walks early in the morning. For those who love early morning walks and wouldn’t like to miss them at any cost, smog need not be a deterrent. “Masks like those used by the traffic police help keep out dust to a great extent. For those with asthma, preventive medication is a must,” mentions Dr Waghray. Asthma patients tend to stop medication if they are feeling alright but they must continue with preventive medication to avoid asthmatic attacks in such a situation.

Dr Lavanya Nutankalva, infectious disease specialist, Apollo Hospital, also agrees that masks can be a good preventive measure. “You can also do breathing exercises and yoga,” she adds. While smog does not cause a specific disease as such, it can aggravate existing respiratory conditions. “Smog doesn’t cause any infectious diseases but we treat people who come in with any allergic blockage,” mentions Dr Lavanya. Since childhood we have time and again been told about how we should work towards cutting down various forms of pollution as it is the cause of various other problems in the long run. Smog is the result of air pollution, which needs to be tackled. Dr Lavanya also believes that preventive measures can be taken but the root cause is pollution which needs to be curtailed, “Go green and try to incorporate measures to cut air pollution in your daily life,” she says. Pollution is the main cause of smog, till high pollution levels persist; smog will continue to affect us. Till then take care, go green and breathe free!

What about contraception during chemotherapy? The contraceptive pill is not routinely recommended for women whose breast cancer is hormone sensitive because of the possible risk of hormonal stimulation of the breast cancer. Although periods may become irregular or stop completely during Chemotherapy, it is still important to use contraception. It is advisable to use a barrier method of contraception during chemotherapy, such as condoms, since chemotherapy drugs affect the whole body and may be in body fluids. One can carry on with usual sex life during your treatment but it is advisable not to get pregnant. Can complimentary therapies help deal with breast cancer? Many people find that complementary therapies can help them cope with the side effects of chemotherapy, even though there may not necessarily be the clinical evidence to back this up or measure the ‘feel good factor’ they can bring. There are many different types of complimentary therapies including relaxation, visualisation, aromatherapy, reflexology, meditation and hypnotherapy. Is it possible to preserve fertility before breast cancer treatment is given? If one wants to look at ways of trying to preserve fertility, it is important to talk to the specialist team and a fertility specialist before treatment begins. This is generally only an option for women under the age of 40 as fertility is declining naturally in women beyond this age. There are a number of possibilities that may be appropriate, although some of these are only in the very early stages of research. B LONDON: While many people prefer being cautious about taking too much tea at home or workplace, researchers now suggest that by taking three cups a day one can slash heart attack’s risk by 60 per cent and dramatically reduce diabetes threat. Researchers believe that the humble cuppa, packed with healthgiving antioxidants, can help prevent the two killer conditions in a triple-pronged attack, the Daily Express reported. The study found that in most cases black tea was found to produce a significant protective association. Regular consumption of tea is claimed to prevent artery-blocking blood clots, control blood pressure and stop arteries from dangerously constricting and inhibiting blood flow. All three conditions can set off a killer heart attack as blood vessels feeding oxygen to heart muscles become blocked.

An extensive review of 40 research papers by Carrie Ruxton and Pamela Mason, and published in the UK Nutrition Bulletin, evaluated a raft of data linking black tea and disease prevention. Ruxton and Mason estimate that people taking three to six cups of tea a day lower their risk of contracting heart disease by 30 to 57 per cent compared with people who never drink it or who drink small amounts. “Given the available evidence to date, regular black tea consumption is linked with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes,” Ruxton said. “Though the amount required to produce such benefits should be the subject of further research, three to six cups of black tea daily appears to contribute to cardiovascular health.”

The fluid could be watery, milky or yellow. In some cases it could also be blood. d A mass or lump, which may feel as small as a pea. e A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm. n Roll your shoulders and elbows forward to tighten your chest muscles. Look for any change in the contour of your breast. Next one must inspect the outer portions of the breast by clasping your hand behind your head. n Lying down, place a small pillow under the right shoulder. You must use your right hand to feel your breast using a circular motion. It should be done in such a way so as to be able to feel the tissues. While feeling the back tissue one should be able to feel the rib cage. n Place your fingers flat and directly on top of your nipple and gently press. The nipple should move easily. The last set of steps must be done while standing under the shower. n Raise one arm behind the head so as to be able to spread out the breast tissue. n Check for any lumps or thickening in the underarm area. BEIJING: Food safety regulators in a Chinese province have detected carcinogenic substance Aflatoxin in peanuts and cooking oil. The chemical was found in the food items in Shenzhen city of Guangdong province. The cancer-causing substance triggered a health scare earlier this week after being found in milk products. Aflatoxin occurs naturally in the environment and is produced by certain types of fungi. It can cause severe liver damage, including cancer. The Shenzhen market supervision bureau said it found up to four times the permitted level of aflatoxin in peanuts sold in three places, and similar levels in

But it’s important that either you wear a colour that contrasts or compliments what you are wearing or else you could risk looking bizarre.” A student of fashion designing from NIFT, Abhilasha Kapoor, says, “I personally love leg warmers. I remember my grandmother used to make crochet warmers. They look, sleek, intricate and trendy. In fact, I still wear some of her crochet pieces over plain leg warmers to give it a layered and vibrant look. This is one accessory that you can wear absolutely anywhere and whether it’s a business meeting, a round of clubbing or even a visit to a hospital!” Abhilasha prefers to wear it over tights and skin-fit jeans. She says, “Personally, I think it looks best with a skirt and a little skin showing and the warmers starting from below the knee till the heels. They also look smart when worn over the shoes.”

In 2011, a total of 235 films, including 117 original Telugu films and 118 dubbed films released in Andhra Pradesh. It's probably the first time in recent years that there were dubbed releases than straight Telugu films and this phenomenon has become a big concern for a lot of people in the Telugu film industry. The success rate remained in single digits and theaters witnessed a major drop in revenues and audience. Leaving aside the success of few films like Dookudu, Mr Perfect, Kandireega and 100% Love, it's has not been a good year for the industry as it continued to grapple with escalating costs, employee strikes and heavy losses at the box office. However, all that is going to change for both filmmakers and film buffs as there are several big films lined up for release throughout the year. Love stories dominated in 2011 more than any other genre and the success of films like Ala Modalaindi, Mr Perfect and

100% Love is proof enough. Even mass entertainers like Mirapakay and Kandireega had a good dose of love along with action and comedy. In 2012, there's an impressive line-up of films which boast of lots of action, thrills and special effects instead. Almost every big hero and director has at least one or two films lined up for release and most of them have already created a lot of buzz among the audience. Trade pundits are already betting on films like The Businessman, Bodyguard, Nippu, Rachcha, Gabbar Singh, Dammu and Rebel to bring the crowds back to theaters in huge numbers. Apart from this, several actors like Mahesh Babu, Ram Charan Tej, Allu Arjun, Rana Daggubati, Ravi Teja, Siddharth and Ram are making a conscious effort to expand their market. Recently, Rana was signed up for Vetri Maaran's Vaada Chennai, Ravi Teja is playing an important role in Venkat Prabhu's film and Ram Charan Tej is going to star in a Hindi film. Bilingual films are expected to be in vogue in the near future and the box office result of Venkatesh, Mahesh Babu starrer Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu will decide the fate of multi-

starrers. Among the actresses, Kajal, Tamannaah, Samantha, Deeksha Seth and Richa have a lot to look forward to this year. Quite rarely has Tollywood witnessed such activity, where almost every big star and director has plenty of work in hand, in recent years. It remains to be seen whether the audience will lap up all the promising films of 2012, but what is for sure is that there will be a lot more mass entertainers this year. The failure of some of the big films in recent years has come as a wake up call for the film fraternity and everything that could go wrong has gone wrong in 2011, but 2012 is likely to change the fortunes of several people in the industry. For the audience, it means that Telugu films are going to get bigger, glossier and more entertaining. Only the coming few months will tell if films have gotten any better, but as long as the audience get their dose of entertainment who cares whether a film is actually good or not.

he success of the Tamil-English number Kolaveri di even before its official launch has proved the power of online social networking platforms. Members of music group Shadow Band feel the online medium has given a window to new talent and can be a stepping stone to a career in Bollywood. The two-member band comprises Rajan Adlakha, an architect, and Vineet Malhotra, a TV anchor. The former schoolmates came together at a reunion in 2009 and shared thoughts on music, following which they decided to try their hand at composing. The band was formed in February 2010 and their music has found online fans. “As far as social networking sites are concerned, we would not be where we are today without them. Bollywood is very compact when it comes to giving importance or exposure to young talent because in today’s time, no one wants to take a chance,” Malhotra said. “Everyone wants to follow a safe bet

and mint money. This attitude has only led to talented musicians being ignored. But we are confident we will penetrate that space (Bollywood). It’s only a matter of time,” he added. Of late, live bands and the concept of posting music online has caught the fancy of many newcomers in order to reach a global audience. So has it become any easier to carve a niche in the music industry? “Not exactly. Live bands perform from time to time at various places, but the recognition is still slow to come. Internet helps your cause to a certain extent but the real action lies in the core of media promotion. Carving a niche is not really that easy, but if it was, why would anyone do it?” said Adlakha. However, collaborating with TV actor Rajev Paul could prove to be stepping stone to tinsel town for the band. “Rajev and I went to the same gym in Mumbai while I was working as a TV presenter for Neo. He had written some poetry that was posted

on a social website and I decided to adopt a few of them and turn them into songs. Rajev, being a TV actor, brings a new dimension to the music we offer. Before venturing into pop, we were all out electronica and this association helped us in realising that we could do more and this gets us closer to Bollywood,” said Malhotra. If given a chance in Bollywood, the musicians “wish to create tunes that are fresher and newer in their feel”. “Music has gone stale in Hindi cinema today. We hope to change that and bring in a new dimension to everything we compose,” added Adlakha. About the growth of alternate music in India, Adlakha said: “Music is India is rich and historically relevant. It’s a part of our culture and upbringing, but experimentation and creative expression are still waiting their turn. It is prevalent to some extent but just like alternate cinema alternate music has to fight its battles,” he said. Their yet-to-be-titled album will release in January 2012.

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

SANTA ROSA DE LA PAMPA: The death of Argentinian rider Jorge Martinez Boero overshadowed the first day of the Dakar Rally on Sunday during which Russia's Leonid Novitzkiy lead the cars section and Chilean Francisco Lopez the motorbikes. The 38-year-old Boero, making his second appearance on the gruelling rally, suffered a heart attack after being seriously injured in a fall from his Beta bike two kilometres from the end of the stage between Mar del Plata and Santa Rosa de la Pampa in the west of Argentina. Organisers said that Boero received medical attention within five minutes of the crash and was airlifted by helicopter, but died on his way to hospital. Boero, they said, "was the victim of a fall at kilometre 55 of the special of the first stage between Mar del Plata and Santa Rosa". "The rider suffered a cardiac arrest following his fall and was attended five minutes after the accident by the medical staff, who reached the place of the incident by helicopter. Aprilia rider Lopez timed 32min 37sec coming in 14sec ahead of defending motorbike champion Marc Coma of Spain on a KTM and 27sec in front of Argentinian Javier Pizzolito, riding a Honda.

Both teams will be hoping to put the other in to exploit the first day conditions, as their opening bowlers showed good form in Melbourne. Australia may opt to go in with four fast bowlers as Ryan Harris is back in the side after injury. Harris has been an important member of the Australian side since his debut. He has the ability to take wickets regularly and always bowls a tight line and length. The only problem for Australia will be if they bowl last and the wicket offers some help. This will be compounded as only skipper Michael Clarke and David Warner offer spin options. With hardly a break between

He has scored heavily here and if India do bat second, he will probably get ideal conditions to reach that landmark. His form in Melbourne was excellent and he has again found the ability to score fast. And add a little prayer that he does not slow down near the lunch, or tea breaks which has often proved fatal. Now with Zaheer Khan bowling almost near his best, India’s support bowlers Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma must tighten up. No more four balls every over. The aim should be to build up pressure and play on the patience of Australia’s stroke makers like David Warner and Clarke who are playing on their home ground. If India stick to the basics, they have great chance to level

the series, barring the usual sting in the tail. India may well ponder the inclusion of the in-form Rohit Sharma instead of Viral Kohli. Sharma has yet to debut and it could be a major risk to take with so much at stake in the series. It would also be unfair to Kohli to be dropped without a proper trial. Australia will start confidently this time. The victory in Melbourne proved that their players can apply themselves when it matters. Clarke has this ability to try the unorthodox when the game goes smoothly for the opposition. He is not afraid to use parttimers to break a partnership and has succeeded often. He is always aggressive and his field positioning has improved over a period of time. These factors will once again be crucial in Sydney during the middle period at the SCG, India will be praying that Dhoni gets a decent run in the middle with the bat. He is a confidence player and one good knock will reflect on his captaincy. And if he attacks the tail with no freebies around, there will be no threat from them. India’s mantra should be aggression in this Test. No more drooping shoulders and half smiles. Just chest out and go get them.
