Pseudo forest officials in police net Cops were in for a surprise when they learnt that the conmen were actually part-time reporters with local channels!

CRIME Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com

T

hey made a good “living” from deceit for quite some time, but as all good things come to an end, they fell into the long arms of law at last. The “panch pyare” or the five chums were entrapped three days ago by the Uppal police quite by accident. They come from varied stations in life: three are stringers with local television channels, one a security man, and one is into transport business. Sub Inspector N Naga Chary unrolled the plot for Postnoon. The five found out that heavy amounts are extracted from lorry drivers by various forces right from police to

excise and forest departments. They formed a gang, bought some forest official uniforms and insignia, rented a Scorpio with a beacon to be used in case of emergency and began the game of extorting money from lorry drivers on the National Highway at night. “They used to snare 10-12 lorries a night posing as forest officials and earned a hefty sum and it was a jolly life for some time,” recalled Chary, adding, “but their luck ran out recently.” Their style, said Chary, would dim the performance of the “style mannan” Rajnikant. Two of the five are well built with an official air about them. They donned the role of ‘higher officials’ and would sit in the vehicle with a gravity befitting sincere senior officials, talking into a walkie-talkie (which did not function). And the other

two minions would intimidate the driver and bargain for a sum. Many who did not want trouble paid up and sped away. The few reluctant Joes would be dragged to the “officers” sitting in the car. The officers, with the appropriate officious air would be talking with ‘higher ups’ and make the driver wait. The “officer’ would pretend to talk to the “chief conservator” quoting the lorry number. The officer, would then snarl at the driver and ask details about the goods in the lorry and demand to see the papers. The alarmed driver would pay up and leave. However, the game came to a halt three days ago. How? They were on their usual nocturnal hunt along the Highway near Uppal when they came upon a driver who proved a roughneck. He objected to the heavy sum demanded and a

ruckus ensued. The quarrel resulted in a traffic jam and the Uppal police patrol that rolled by probed the source of the blockade and were told that forest officials were checking a lorry. The police came up, demurred at first so as not to antagonise forest officials. The patrolling police politely asked the “forest officials” what the matter was and the lorry driver, instead, offered the explanation. Chary said the police smelled a rat and asked for the identity of the officers. They insisted they are officials but it did not wash, and suddenly, three of the five took to their

heels and the police immediately placed the remaining two under arrest. They were identified as Mohd Sadiq, 45, of LB Nagar who is into transport business, Abdul Qader, 48, a security guard lived at Balapur of Pahadi Shareef. The three accomplices who bolted are identified as Sreedhar Reddy, Srinivas, and Krishna Yadav, all three are said to be local reporters with two television channels. The hunt is on for the absconding. Enquiries with the channels and their residences revealed that they are hiding, police said.

Lokesh to do an Akhilesh in AP Despite the family feud, Lokesh, former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu’s son, is being readied to take over the reins of the party by 2014

POLITICS Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

T

he TDP, salivating at the UP scene where Akhilesh Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son, got installed as the chief minister, is raring to induct Lokesh, son of party chief Chandrababu Naidu as the second-incommand. The decks seems to be getting cleared for Lokesh’s entry into the Telugu Desam Party, though the NTR family feud still exists, which had so far blocked Lokesh’s formal entry. The ongoing review by the party president to find out the reasons for drubbing of the party in 18 Assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency has become the platform to pitch for the entry of Lokesh into politics. These review meetings are being held since the last 10 days at the party headquarters in the City. The leaders are saying that they don’t have direct access to the party president to express their views and that they need a leader who can act as a mediator between them and the president. “On

many occasions, we wanted to express our views to the party president. But we could not do it due to lack of direct access to Naidu. Lack of access is one of the reasons for the party’s defeat in various elections since 2004,” Telugu Yuvata leader MA

COMMUNITY Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

T

hey are the inheritors of the rich and versatile colonial culture. They also played a crucial role in nation building by rendering their services to the armed forces, Indian Railways and Postal services before and after independence. But, the drastic changes in society in the last few decades has them struggling to keep their injeritance intact. The community in question is the Anglo-Indian community. With a population of 68,000 across the State, the community has 8,000 people living in the City alone. The elite tag that this community carries has made them aloof and it is this that has forced the community elders and representatives to make demands publicly for fulfillment of their rights and equitable distribution of resources on par with others in the country. According to Christine Lazarus, an MLA, most of her community members are not aware of welfare programmes and benefits being

extended to the community by the State government. “The State government is implementing many welfare programmes for the welfare of Anglo-Indians, but many of these benefits are not enjoyed by them due to lack of awareness,” she said at the National Convention Echo Meet held in the City recently. Lazarus further informed that the State has a total of 185 seats reserved for the Anglo-Indian community in professional courses like MBBS, Engineering, MBA, MCA and Law courses. But out of these185 seats, only 60-70 seats are being filled every year, she added. She explained that she is planning to launch a series of programmes to create awareness among the community members about these welfare schemes.

Poverty looms The shocking fact about the community is that some of the community members are leading lives in abject poverty due to lack of proper education and opportunities. Lazarus demanded that the government provide housing facilities under schemes like Rajiv Awas Yojana and JNNURM. “Many of our community members are poor. So, I requested the government to allocate 300 houses under the weaker section housing schemes,” she said. The community is also being ignored by government officials in census-2012. Anglo-Indians have been considered as Christians instead of a group with a separate identity. Christine feels that these measures only lead to loss of identity and added that the government should take measures to protect their identity.

Faheem told Postnoon. These leaders feel that Lokesh’s induction would give a fillip to the party’s youth wing and also boost party workers’ morale. “The much talked about cash transfer scheme promised by the party during 2009 general elections was Lokesh Babu’s brainchild. If he gets into active politics, it would definitely strengthen the party,” Telugunadu Students Federation (TNSF) president N Narsi Reddy said. A group of TNSF leaders recently met the party president Chandrababu Naidu and submitted a memorandum requesting him to appoint Lokesh as Youth wing president of the party. In the memorandum, the student leaders contended that it is essential for the party to bring Lokesh into active politics to ensure the victory of the party in the 2014 assembly elections. Citing the Uttar Pradesh state example where SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh became chief minister, the leaders have said that Lokesh can do an Akhilesh in AP. On the other hand, some senior leaders wanted Lokesh to be made in-charge of the Chandragiri Assembly constituency, the birth place of party president Chandrababu Naidu. A group of leaders from this constituency met the party president and made this request a few months ago.

TDP leader joins YSR Congress A

s expected, migration from losing parties to winners’ camp has begun. Telugu Desam Party Kollapur Assembly constituency in-charge Jagadheshwara Rao has resigned from the party’s primary membership and his post on Sunday. Rao told media persons that he had faxed his resignation letter to the party president N Chandrababu Naidu. He announced that he would join the YSR Congress Party shortly. It may be mentioned that many of the TDP functionaries were leaving the party and joining either the TRS or the YSRC, following the debacle of the party in the recent by-elections. NSS

Burglars strike, decamp with gold

T

he residents of Doyens colony in Chandanagar were in for a rude shock this morning following a burglary in their locality. The burglars took away 15 tolas of gold and a Maruti Zen car owned by the victims. Speaking to Postnoon, Chandanagar police inspector N Venkateswarlu confirmed the news and said that a group of seven members committed the crime, which took place at 3.15 am today. “The gang entered the house (HNO. 96) of one Casper, an ITI owner, by making hole in the door. The gang threatened the family members with revolvers and tied them to chairs. They later took 15 tolas gold and escaped in the car owned by the family,” the inspector said. The police have launched a massive hunt for the culprits and roped in the clues team to identify the burglars. The inspector told Postnoon that the burglary is the handy work of a professional gang. Incidentally, this is the first such incident under Chandanagar police station limits.

Oppostion parties stage dharna

O

pposition parties in the State staged a protest at Dharna Chowk today demanding that the State government solve the problems faced CPI secretary by the farming Narayana on community in the his way to the State in view of the dharna ongoing Kharif season. The leaders of the main opposition TDP, CPI and Loksatta parties participated in this agitation. Addressing the gathering, the leaders alleged that the Congress grossly failed to solve the farmers’ problems, especially in terms of distribution of seeds. They demanded that the State government ensure adequate number of seeds for the farmers so that they can sow their fields.

Memoirs of Rasoolpura Krishna Dahya, an Indicorps fellow from California who has been working towards encouraging entrepreneurship among women in the City’s largest slum talks about failures, challenges and plans ahead PICTURE FOR REPRESENTATIONAL PURPOSE ONLY

Krishna Dahya feedback@postnoon.com

I

stepped into Rasoolpura equipped with my handydandy tool belt composed of all the equipment necessary to build a successful entrepreneur. I had the frameworks, the formulae, some experience, an idea of what it meant to be an ‘entrepreneur’, and how these traits, behaviours and characteristics could be built in others. What had not really crossed my mind were the tools that I was missing: I had no understanding of the residents that made up this community, had never lived in India, no knowledge of Telugu, a Hindi vocabulary that consisted of the most common words from Bollywood films and whatever transferred over from my limited grasp of Gujarati. “Developing entrepreneurship potential”, the objective of my focus in Rasoolpura, was going to be much more difficult than I had imagined. It has been almost 11 months now since I arrived in Rasoolpura as an Indicorps (Indicorps is an non-profit organisation that encourages Indians around the world to actively participate in India’s progress through a grassroots service fellowship programme) Fellow partnered with the NGO Bhumi. I came to Bhumi to focus on entrepreneurship development in Rasoolpura. Ultimately, we want to create a micro-entrepreneurship hub (MEH), a platform for potential and existing entrepreneurs to access skill development trainings, mentorship support, market linkages, financial resources and

INSIGHT INTO... Rasoolpura information. The MEH should be self-sustaining in that the members are the ones who are managing and growing it. The first step was to develop an entrepreneurship curriculum with which we could attract community members and make them entrepreneurs. Upon developing the curriculum we spent several months trying to interest women to take our workshops, with little success. Nayeem Bhai, one of the community leadership fellows at Bhumi, would assist with identifying women who might be interested in starting businesses. Each time

we did not get further than a few meetings before everyone dropped out. The women wanted us to think of a business idea, and then give them piece-work that they could do at home and we would pay them for. While I still hold that the best business ideas will come from the people in the community, I did not think about where the creativity to come up with these ideas comes from. Creativity is required for idea generation — and creativity requires stimulireading new material, visiting new places, meeting different people, watching the news etc. I was working with a largely Muslim population, the women I was encouraging to think of new business ideas rarely spoke to different people outside their family and their neighbours, were illiterate, and not allowed to venture too far out of their homes. Where were they going to get the stimuli to generate new ideas? These women were not ready for the curriculum I had created, I was trying to sow seeds in soil that was too hard and undernourished to accept them. The seeds I had created were too big and required a very fertile soil, we decided to create new seeds that could pave the way for more fertile soil. The team at Bhumi started a jute and cloth product manufacturing enterprise to bridge this gap. Slowly through observing how business runs, interacting with customers, and most of all, building confidence, these women may be ready to start their own enterprises. The frustration that came along with so many failed meet-

ings and the inability to pilot out this curriculum I had put so much of myself into was huge. I was constantly battling between the ideals I had set for how things should be implemented, and what it was the women of the community wanted. My failures, (and this year I have collected quite a portfolio of them) have taught me more than my successes. Each time I learn something that allows me to be more effec-

entrepreneurial environment of Rasoolpura. With the support of my mentor, Professor Radhika Meenakshi, a team of us surveyed about 50 micro-entrepreneurs in Rasoolpura, ranging from chai bandis to café’s. The statistics we found were revealing — about 60 per cent do not have bank accounts and do not make enough profit to cover their home expenses, and only 30 per cent of the ventures were run by women.

Entrepreneurship mela to be held

T

he mela will be held on July 15 at the Rasoolpura Government High School grounds in Begumpet. The mela will consist of microentrepreneurs displaying and selling their products and services as well as organisations displaying the entrepreneurial activities they are involved in. If you are an organisation, microentrepreneur, or individual interested in attending, knowing more or participating please contact Krishna at kdahya1@gmail.com.

Krishna Dahya tive in reaching my goal. All the preconceived ideas, the theories of business and micro-enterprise were thrown into the dust bin, the most important and effective means for success was to observe, to listen, and to ask the right questions. With the new realisation on the power of observation, we decided to look at the current

How is it that micro-entrepreneurship is a means to poverty alleviation when most of the businesses could not cover home expenses and therefore they had little chance of growing their ventures? It was no wonder that most of these micro-business owners would much rather have a steady job than a business, and it was no wonder so few people in the

community were interested in becoming entrepreneurs. We identified several key challenges that they faced — infrastructure, financing, market linkages, skills, information, and competition. Fortunately, there are many organisations focused on addressing these challenges. The issue is that very few of the residents of Rasoolpura know about them. In order to foster an entrepreneurship environment we first needed people to feel motivated and inspired to be entrepreneurs, and in order to do this, community members need to see that there is a chance of success, that there are people who have already succeeded, and that there are organisations that want to support entrepreneurs. With this conclusion in mind we are having a microentrepreneurship mela. The mela will bring together potential and existing micro-entrepreneurs and organisations working in the space of micro-entrepreneurship development. We hope that with motivational speakers, success stories of micro-entrepreneurs from similar backgrounds, and exposure to the plethora of services available, we can inspire more of the community. We also hope that connections can be established among organisations present so that a more comprehensive solution to microentrepreneurship development is achieved. We hope that this is the start of a yearly event that can inspire new entrepreneurs. The writer is an Indicorps Fellow from California who has spent the past year in Rasoolpura working with the NGO Bhumi.

fter playing games like God of war, Infamous, Age of mythology, Age of empires, our children are well-versed with western mythology but they barely know about Indian epics and mythological sagas. To change this trend, two gaming enthusiasts who are alumni of IIIT-Hyderabad (International Institute of Information Technology) have made games of Indian origin. This is perhaps the first time one would be playing old Indian board games in Telugu. “Through most of our college life, we played games. A large amount of these games that we played were fiction-based and Hollywood stories. This is when we thought that we should break the monotony. Indian mythology like Mahabharata and Ramayana are richer than those of the West and children need to know about them,” said Sudarshan B. However, they were also sceptical that gamers may not accept the sudden change, which is why they decided to come up with an essential multi-player platform and introducing old board games like Snakes and Ladders and Ludo on the web. “As a child I used to play several board games but children these days are not even aware that such games exist. Today everything is on the web. We thought why not bring the old games back online and save the dying art of playing board games,” he adds. It took them six months to develop these games. All of them are uploaded on

a website called Yuya Vyuha. When asked why they chose the name Vyuha they said that gaming is all about strategies and they also have a strategy in mind. Explaining further they said, “Our strategy is to get people involved in Indian gaming. The best way to spread knowledge is through education, and we have chosen games as a platform to spread knowledge on Indian mythology.” Several studies have supported the fact that children these days spend most time playing online games than read a book and perhaps this is a great platform

to blend both old games and knowledge. At present they have developed only Telugu Scrabble and soon would be developing it in other regional language. They have six to eight board games like Ashta Cham, Mekka Pulli, Snakes and Ladders as well as Ludo. “In this age and time of globalisation, it’s time we spread Indian mythology too. We have also have several strategic games just that we need to bring them to a global platform. When the world has accepted yoga then why no Indian mythology games,” said Badireddi signing off.

n June 30, Postnoon carried an article with the headline ‘Loyola students protest’. The incident Loyola students protesting and demanding the removal of the vice-principal Father Rex after he allegedly confiscated a girl’s ID card after she was seen greeting a male student. It is said that the girl’s father was summoned to the college and told that her conduct was questionable and might result in rape. The girl involved in the incident, Saraswathi Reddy last night spoke

out on the college’s Facebook page. Her post read, “now guys this is enough. I am getting dragged very badly into these issues; I am out of this now. I do not have any issue or problem with father Rex. Do not drag me with issues faced by anybody else.” This statement created a buzz online and to one of the comments she replied, “I am not backing out because I am scared. Now my dad is upset and I can’t explain why.” Despite this a few students want to continue with the agitation and are wearing black colour clothes as a sign of protest.

GV’s Shiva starring Nagarjuna, Amala and Raghuvaran was a game changer when it released in 1989. The film, set in the backdrop of college politics, ends with Shiva (Nagarjuna) killing Bhavani (Raghuvaran).Although Shiva manages to put an end to all the atrocities of Bhavani’s gang, he doesn’t harm Bhavani’s illegitimate son. This thread has the potential to spawn a sequel to this cult film. Twenty years later, Bhavani’s son believes that the time has come to avenge his father’s death. Elsewhere, Shiva’s son comes to know about his father’s past and begins to realize that his father’s life is in danger. He decides to take upon the responsibility of not only saving his father’s life from Bhavani’s son but also take upon his father’s role to protect the people who have faith in him. This almost sounds like an adaptation of Godfather!

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER? Businessman

P

uri Jagannadh’s Businessman narrates the story of Surya Bhai (MaheshBabu), who sets off on a mission to legalize the mafia. Since he single handedly controls the government, the police can’t even lay their hands

on him. Although he’s not entirely a bad guy, he’s amoral and as time progresses his mind gets extremely corrupted with grandeur plans. If ever Puri Jagannadh plans to make a sequel to this film, we would love to see him pit Surya Bhai against a sin-

cere police officer like Krishna Manohar IPS, a role which was played by Mahesh Babu in Pokiri. It’ll be a quintessential battle of mavericks where neither of them wants to give up their goals. Now what are the odds of this coming true?

Oke Okkadu

T

his is not a straight Telugu film; however, the premise is so explosive that we couldn’t just ignore it. Directed by Shankar, the film is based on a preposterous idea of what a common man can do if he becomes the Chief Minister for a day. Considering the turbulent state of politics today, a sequel to Oke Okkadu would be perfect. Shankar has the knack of striking a balance between populism and social awareness. With him at the helm of affairs, one can expect fireworks as the protagonist resolves to do whatever it takes to put the culprits responsible for scores of scams behind bars. He has always had the penchant to deal with issues like corruption and development.

Raghavendra Rao’s Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari starring Chiranjeevi and Sridevi was an iconic film. Sridevi, the daughter of Lord Indra, decides to stay back on Earth with Chiranjeevi at the end of the film. She throws away the ring, which was essential if she wanted to return to Indralokam, and a fish swallows this ring. Cut to twenty years later, the sequel could begin with Chiranjeevi, Sridevi’s son finding this ring at the bottom of the sea which gives him immense power. The villain comes to know about it and decides to kill the hero to retrieve the ring to rule the world. Once again, the responsibility of saving the world falls upon the hero and in the end, he lets go off the ring because some powers are just not worth having for the greater good of mankind.

ingeetham Sreenivasa Rao’s Bhairava Dweepam starring Balakrishna and Roja is a quintessential folklore. A brave young man sets out on an adventure to retrieve a necklace to save the princess from a sorcerer. In the course of his journey, he impresses a Pegasus, fights two headed dragon and a giant who can only be killed by destroying all the mirrors around him. It was an incredible film encompassing a great storyline. There’s a lot of scope to weave different adventures after the hero is crowned as the king. We would love to see a sequel where the hero goes out on yet another mission to protect the people in his kingdom from evil powers and invaders. We’ll leave it to your imagination to ponder what adventure should itbe for the protagonist in this sequel.

eeraj Kakkar, James Nuttall, Suhas Misra, and Neeraj Biyani teamed to start Hector Beverages that produces Tzinga a natural energy drink priced at `20 with a contemporary packaging (spout pouch) to compete with products by global beverage companies that are positioned at high price points. Hector beverages has raised `16 crore as part of initial investments by Catamaran Venture Fund, Footprint Ventures and other angel investors. The company is also planning to expand to all major cities in India and aims to reach the top 35 in three years.

THE COMPANY HAS 150 EMPLOYEES AND IS PLANNING TO EXPAND TO ALL MAJOR CITIES IN INDIA AND AIMS TO REACH THE TOP 35 CITIES IN THREE YEARS. Talking about the fizzy drink market, Neeraj Kakkar, CEO, said, the countercultural movement is quite nascent in India. The average consumer is still quite susceptible to high voltage advertising. The makers of fizzy drinks rely heavily on emotional messages delivered by celebrities from Bollywood and cricket rather than on the functional value of the products themselves. There has been a movement of young consumers away from such products to more meaningful beverages but in India we have not seen that yet. However, such a movement happening in India is only a matter of time-

with increasing global exposure and education. “Our strategy is to put the best possible product out there consistently and sooner where consumers will see the value. We also have a direct connect with consumers which enabled our Facebook page with 3,65,000+ followers and have a conversation with our consumers on all the time. A simple test would be to write to Tzinga (on Facebook) and to any of the other major beverage brands — our answer will be invariably faster, and more importantly, will be more honest,” he said. The 150-employee company is growing its volumes by more than 10 per cent month on month. It is also starting up a second manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The first plant was set up in Manesar industrial area in Gurgaon last year. The company is differentiating from its competitors with its natural ingredients and is also mainly targeting 18-25 age groups.

Few Eves in Asia’s top jobs Barclays chairman to SEOUL: Companies in Asia’s leading economies have “strikingly” few women in senior jobs, missing out on a vital pool of talent to fuel the region’s growth, consultancy firm McKinsey & Company said Sunday. In a survey covering 744 firms of 10 major stock markets in the Asia-Pacific, McKinsey said women on average account for only six percent of board seats compared to 17 per cent in Europe and 15 per cent in the US. Women hold eight per cent of executive committee seats in the Asian firms, still lower than the average of 10 per cent in Europe and 14 per cent in the United States, it said, calling the numbers in Asia “strikingly low”. “It’s a huge waste of talent, as half of Asian graduates are female. And it is a waste that

Asian companies can ill afford, given the severe shortage of senior managers in the region,” said the report titled “Women Matter”. Australia, Hong Kong and China topped the list of female presence in the boardroom, with women accounting for 13, nine and eight per cent respectively in these top jobs, while South Korea, Japan and India were at the bottom. Japan came next from bottom with only two percent of such jobs held by women due to similar pressures on them to be a sole caregiver of the family, it said, adding about 60 percent of Japanese women quit or change jobs after marriage. The number hovers slightly higher at five percent in India. AFP

LONDON: The chairman of Barclays Bank will on Monday step down after the group was fined for attempting to manipulate the inter-bank lending rate, British media reported. Marcus Agius will announce that he is to leave his post in the face of public and political fury over the bank’s efforts to distort the rate at which banks lend to each other, according to the BBC. “Today Mr Agius has told his colleagues on the Barclays board that he will be going,” BBC business editor Robert Peston said. “It’s not wholly unexpected,” he added. “Mr Agius was first in the firing line as far as shareholders were concerned, they’ve been thinking for some time that Barclays might need a new chairman, he’s been in the job for six years next year.” The resignation statement, which was due to be announced at 7am (0600 GMT), will concede the bank displayed an “unacceptable standard of behaviour” that dealt a “devastating blow” to its reputation, according to the report. Agius is expected to announce that “the buck stops with me,” the Financial Times reported. Mike Rake, chairman of BT, is

Rich hoard gold, art in Swiss banks NEW DELHI: Amid a global crackdown against alleged black money in secret accounts of Swiss banks, their bankers are selling a new safe-haven idea to their rich clients from India and other countries — the highvalue 1,000 franc notes to be stored in safe deposit boxes. These boxes — kept inside the premises of Swiss banks — are also said to be being used to stash gold, diamond, paintings and art works among other valuables — apparently because of limited risk of catching the preying eyes of foreign governments having signed banking information exchange treaties with Switzerland. According to industry sources, bankers are telling their rich clients that Switzerland’s tax and information exchange treaties with India and other countries are mostly limited to funds in customers’ savings, deposit and investment accounts, and do not apply to the safe deposit boxes. As a result, the demand has soared to record high levels for the safe deposit boxes and the 1,000 Swiss franc banknotes in

Switzerland, as rich of the world are rushing to get them. As per the data available with Switzerland’s central bank SNB (Swiss National Bank), the thousand-franc notes now account for 60 per cent of total value of all Swiss banknotes in circulation, up from about 50 per cent a year ago. Replying to PTI queries, SNB confirmed that there was a significant surge in demand for

thousand-franc notes and admitted that this could be due to a trend to store the money and a higher demand was being noticed from abroad for these high-value currency notes. SNB did not reply to specific queries about demand from India and said that it did not have any data on deposit boxes. Just one thousand-franc banknote is worth about `60,000 in Indian currency, making it easier

Man spared jail due to mentally retarded child

NEW DELHI: The mentally retarded daughter of a man convicted for rash driving in a 19-year-old case has led a court into adopting a lenient view and letting him off with a meagre fine. Central Delhi resident Ish Sharma, convicted for rash driving and causing grevious hurt to a person, was let off with a fine of `10,000 after he submitted before the court that he has a 14-

year-old mentally retarded daughter to take care of. Metropolitan Magistrate Hem Raj perused the medical record and certificates of the mentally retarded girl, said, “The counsel for the convict had filed on record photocopies of the medical certificate of her daughter showing that the innocent girl is suffering from the disease of mental retardation which cannot be cured medically. “The medical treatment of the girl would be seriously affected and the education of his (convict’s) son would also be jeopardised if the convict is sent behind bars. In my opinion, by imposing an appropriate sentence of fine would suffice the purpose and the convict would be more careful in the future”. The court imposed a fine of `1,000 on him for rash driving and another `9,000 for causing grievous hurt. Sharma told the court that he is the sole bread earner of the family which consists of his wife and school-going children. He also said that he has a 14-yearold daughter who is mentally retarded and if he is sent to jail, she would be deprived of the love and affection of his father as well as her medical treatment would be seriously affected. The court perused the medical records and certificates of his mentally retarded daughter. PTI

to store large amount of money in form of these notes. The total value of thousand-franc notes currently in circulation is two trillion rupees (32.5 billion Swiss francs). Also, Switzerland is among the few major countries to have denomination of as high as 1,000, while the highest value banknotes in the UK and the US are only 50 pounds (about `4,300) and 100 dollars (`5,500), respectively. The US used to have highvalue notes like $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 earlier, but these currency bills were printed for the last time in 1945 and were not even in circulation since 1969. Besides, the secrecy measures attached with safe deposit boxes are leading to many banks running short of these boxes and are now offering them only to very rich clients. While there are no official figures for these boxes, the commission and fees earned by banks for such facilities appear to be rising. During 2011, Swiss banks registered a decline in their overall commission earn-

However, their ‘other commissions’, which includes royalty and rental fees for safe deposit boxes, rose sharply. Switzerland government’s tax department did not reply to PTI queries about the soaring demand for safe deposit boxes and thousand-franc notes, as also about the possible use of safe deposit boxes to store illicit wealth. They also did not respond to queries about the possible use of these safe deposit boxes to circumvent the tax treaties and information exchange agreements between Switzerland and other countries, including India. Rebel ministers to withdraw resignations BANGALORE: The crisis in the BJP government in Karnataka appears to have been defused today with nine ministers loyal to BS Yeddyurappa deciding to withdraw their resignation after the central leadership assured them that they would decide on their demand for leadership change in the next two-three days. The rebel group, which triggered a fresh crisis last week with nine of their ministers quitting to pile up pressure to remove Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda, has been invited for talks in New Delhi by the party’s central leadership. Announcing this after a meeting at Yeddyurappa’s residence, rural development and panchayat raj minister Jagadish Shettar said the party highcommand has assured that a decision on the leadership issue would be taken in the next twothree days. We want India to come clean on this,” an unnamed official of Pakistan’s Foreign Office was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune. Pakistan will “push” India to share details of the recent arrest of Ansari alias Abu Jundal when the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries meet in Delhi this week, the report said. The two-day talks between the Foreign Secretaries, beginning on July 4, are expected to be dominated by Ansari’s arrest and subsequent claims by Indian authorities, the report further said. The Foreign Office official said Pakistan will ask India to share details of Ansari’s arrest. “India has yet not shared anything with us about this arrest,” the official said. Foie gras ban sends fans on eating-spree LOS ANGELES: Californian foie gras fans stuffed themselves at gastronomic last suppers this weekend, hours before a ban on the delicacy finally comes into force after years of wrangling. But even before the Monday deadline, devotees of the prized French foodstuff — fatty liver, made by force-feeding ducks or geese — have been working on ways to get round the ban, dubbed ‘foie-maggedon” by some. While animal rights groups hailed the law which outlaws selling or making foie gras — pushed through by ex governor Arnold Schwarzenegger — pro-foie gras supporters said they hope it will eventually be repealed. “I think many people are hopeful” the ban will be reversed, said a spokeswoman for the two Michelin-starred Melisse restaurant in Santa Monica, which has been serving a “Foie Gras for All” menu since January. The $185-a-head menu

includes Foie Gras Royale with Blackberry Gelee, Caramelized Buttermilk Mousse, Foie Gras and Dover Sole, followed for dessert by “something sweet with foie” — foie gras ice cream has been on the menu. “They’ve been sold out all week and selling the all foie dinners to packed crowds,” added the spokeswoman for the eatery, which has nevertheless vowed to comply with the new law. From Monday anyone found selling or making foie gras in California will face a $1,000 fine, under a law passed in 2004 but which gave the state’s only foie gras producer seven-and-a-half years to comply. In the run-up to the July 1 ban, some of the Golden State’s top chefs including Thomas Keller, the only US chef with two three Michelinstarred restaurants, redoubled efforts to persuade lawmakers to overturn the ban. Calling themselves the Coalition for Humane and Ethical

Farming Standards, they have staged a series of foie gras-rich evenings to raise money for the cause. But John Burton, the former California legislator who drafted

the law, dismissed their calls, likening foie gras to waterboarding and female genital mutilation. “I’d like to sit all 100 of them down and have duck and goose fat — better yet, dry oatmeal —

Men’s mini-shorts gather mixed response

PARIS: Men look good in minishorts. Or so would suggest the unusual amount of leg seen on the menswear catwalks in Paris this week, but experts say skimpy shorts have little chance of making it in the real world. US-style bermuda pants — shorts in a longer and wider version — have been in style for years. But this week’s spring-summer shows also saw much smaller variations, intended for town as opposed to sport or beachwear. At the Belgian designer Raf Simons, all but a handful of the looks were built around shorts cut high on the thigh, slashed at one side and paired with clean

shoved down their throats over and over and over again,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle. While restaurateurs have overwhelmingly vowed to abide by the new law, ways of circumventing the ban will no doubt be tested in the coming weeks and months. One highlighted by NPR radio recently is the possibility that diners could bring foie gras with them to a restaurant, and pay a “Foie-kage” fee — the equivalent of corkage paid to bring wine to an eatery to drink with a meal. Others talk of private supper clubs, organized without any formal sale of foie gras — using the fact the new law bans only the sale and production of the delicacy, not its consumption or sharing between friends. Mirepoix USA, which sells foie gras online, was urging customers to place “stock up and save” orders before June 28, noting that foie gras can be safely frozen and stored for up to two years.

rime may have actually paid off for a gang of thugs who threw a milkshake into the face of a woman in Palo Alto, Calif. That’s because she responded by tossing her purse into their Range Rover — which contained $2,000, PaloAltoOnline reports. The incident took place before midnight on June 24, when the woman was walking down the street while the white Range Rover drove recklessly towards her, according to PaloAltoOnline. Sgt Brian Philip told the website that one of the occupants allegedly

threw a vanilla milkshake that struck the woman as she approached the corner. The woman attempted to get revenge by throwing her alligator skin purse at the passing vehicle, according to MSNBC.com, but, sadly for her, it went through an open window and landed in the car. If that wasn’t humiliating enough, the purse not only contained several personal items but also $2,000 in cash. Police are currently looking for the teens, AZCentral.com reported.

white shirts and jackets, black patent brogues or sneakers. Likewise at the British tailor Hardy Amies, which made its Paris debut this week, designer Claire Malcolm sent out tailored shorts, with a bermuda-style turn-up but cut at mid-thigh. “There’s no question this is a trend,” said the luxury industry consultant Jean-Jacques Picart. “One way of wearing them is a bit like an English student in a bermuda suit, with a white shirt and smart town shoes, which says to the world: ‘I am showing my legs but I’m still well dressed’. “But for anyone over 30 that looks a bit strange,” he told AFP. The alternative is to see

shorts as an athletic, comfortable garment that simply shows off a well-toned body. Picart says that is “acceptable in town if you offset the look with something elegant,” like clean white tennis shoes and a rich-coloured sweater for example. But not everyone can pull off the look, as warned one of the fashionistas gathered for the Rick Owens show, where the US designer sent out fluid black bermuda pants with skirt-like aprons at the front and back. “If you’ve got scrawny little chicken legs covered in black hair, it’s not going to look all that great,” he warned. The deaths take the toll this year in “green-on-blue” killings — in which Afghan forces turn their weapons against their Western allies — to at least 26, in a total of 18 such incidents. In keeping with its policy, NATO has not identified the victims.

These missiles can target any radar centres on land or sea with high accuracy and can destroy targets several times faster than the speed of sound, Hajizadeh said. Hajizadeh also announced that Iran will launch a three-day military exercise Monday in Sistan-Baluchestan province.

Branson is the oldest to kite-surf Channel LONDON: British tycoon Richard Branson on Sunday became the oldest person to kite-surf the Channel, a day after abandoning an attempt due to his kite being too small. The billionaire adventurer crossed from Dymchurch, Kent, to Wimereux in northern France in three hours, 45 minutes to set a new Guinness World Record. However, Branson failed in his bid to become the

fastest person of any age to cross the Channel, a record that was set by his son Sam on Saturday. “It’s great to be standing on French soil and not be surrounded by French police,” said the 61-year-old. “It’s wonderful for the family to have set three world records in two days. I have even more respect for Sam’s world record having taken so long myself to get across. “The trip was far more

challenging than I thought, with 40 mph winds in the middle of the Channel and major waves. “I have to admit there were moments when I was tempted to abandon it. The wind direction was the opposite of what had been forecast. “I expected to scream across but was greeted with a long, downstream kite that took considerably longer.” ^cm

THE PROBLEM OF THE RUPEE

Talk back A small change

Apropos This is Not a Film. I wish the author used the movie “Zeitgeist Addendum” (the second Zeitgeist film), not “Zeitgeist the movie”, and also stepped away from using the description conspiracy theories. Don’t get me wrong, I do think the first film is conspiracy-orientated. Which is not my cup of tea. But the SECOND and THIRD films–oh my! Linking those films with the original would be completely unfair and not begin to describe the breadth of the new information presented. Peter Joseph does an AMAZING job bringing little-know concepts about the very nature of our society to the forefront. It would be cruel not to watch this movie, because there is so much life-transforming information in the above mentioned films that it will blow you away when you first watch it. I highly suggest skipping over the first Zeitgeist and checking out the other 2 Zeitgeist movies on Youtube. Then, if you want, go back to the other film. Quinn, via e-mail

Games? What a yawn!

Apropos Olympics? What a Yawn! I agree with everything you say, bar your implied sympathy for your neighbours – I would say their unfortunate circumstance is down to greed on their part. Who spends a large sum of money before they have it? Furthermore, who honestly believed they’d be able to rent out a Stratford two-up twodown house for £6000? There are far too many landlords than tenants in the Olympic rentals situation, and many predicted this exact scenario back in 2005. Rob Joyce, via e-mail

No role for Assad Basher al-Assad should have no role to play in any process to bring peace and normacly in Syria. It goes without saying that that is the wish of the Sryrian people. There could be no greater hypocrites than Russia and China when they say that only the Syrian people should be involved in bringing about any change in their country. If that’s how the Syrian crisis is to be dealt with, more Syrians would die, as Assad would remorselessly mow down his own people by the thousands by training the guns sold to him by Russia. n March 2011, the Indian Parliament passed the Coinage Amendments Bill, thereby making the melting or destruction of legal tender punishable by seven years of imprisonment. A coin is a medium of exchange as well as a store of value: when the value of its metal exceeds a coin’s face value, the coin would be valuable more as metal than as currency — hence the legislation. In 2007, police caught a gang of criminals in North India – they were melting huge quantities of coins to make razors to be exported to Bangladesh! Because of widespread instances as this, in June 2011, the Reserve Bank of India withdrew the 25 paise coin from circulation, acknowledging the plummeting value of India’s currency. Since this demonetization of the 25 paise, the Rupee itself has had a rather close shave, buffeted as it has been by 9% inflation at home and a 23% decline in its value vis-à-vis the US Dollar. In the present scenario of universal economic gloom the Rupee suddenly appears unattractive, but it certainly has had its days of glory. The currency got its name from the Sanskrit word rūpya which means silver, and was first introduced as legal tender by Sher Shah Suri in 1540. Its value was based on the silver standard i.e. on its silver content. However, when vast quantities of silver were discovered in the US and in European colonies in the mid-1800s, silver became cheaper, and the Rupee lost its relative value as other currencies were based on the gold standard. Despite this first fall in its value, the Rupee continued to be a successful currency internationally except when, in 1910, to commemorate George V’s ascension as Emperor of India a new Rupee coin was issued depicting the King wearing the Order of the Indian Elephant. Because of poor workmanship the elephant looked like a pig and the ‘Pig Rupee’ had to be withdrawn to appease the incensed Muslims across the Empire! The Rupee was used extensively in East Africa — in Mozambique, Kenya and Uganda.

It was in use in North Africa in Somalia and in South Africa in Natal. In Ethiopia, the Italian colonial administration too minted the Rupia and its unit, the Besa. The East India Company Rupee was briefly used in Australia in the early 19th century. While Sri Lanka did it already in 1869, India decimalised the Rupee in 1957 when the 16-anna Rupee made of 64 pice or paise was replaced by the present Rupee made of 100 paise. In 1959, the Government of India issued the Gulf Rupee meant to be used as the currency of Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Oman. It was only in 1966 when India devalued the Rupee that these countries introduced their own currencies and pegged them to the US Dollar. The national currencies of Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Seychelles and Sri Lanka continue to have the name Rupee, while Indonesia’s rupiah and the Maldives’ rufiyah are also named after it. The Rupee’s next fall was the devaluation in 1991 when a balance of payments crisis loomed over India. It has since been falling steadily for the past 21 years at a compounded annual rate of 3.78% vis-à-vis the Dollar. What is wrong with a currency losing its value? In neighboring China the policy is to deliberately keep the Yuan undervalued. A weaker Rupee would make exports more attractive: the IT sector would benefit because of the competitive advantage to Indian exporters. It would also help in the medium term to set right any trade imbalance. It is the Eurozone that is at the heart of an interna-

tional financial contagion whereas the Government of India recently pledged $10 billion to the Eurozone war chest. India has a revised GDP growth expectation of 5.5% — so are things really so bad and alarming? Actually, yes. India imports 70% of its oil and that is a monthly bill of $6 billion when prices are low. Costlier imports fuel inflation — official data show that vegetables are already costlier by 49% and pulses by 17%. Because they hedge their revenues the IT sector does not automatically gain from a lower Rupee: IT giants Infosys and Wipro lost over 15% and 10% of their value in recent months. Current account and fiscal account deficits are alarmingly high — the present fiscal deficit to GDP ratio of over 4% is threatening to go up to 5.4%. This is scary and also puts paid to plans for full capital account convertibility of the Indian Rupee since the Reserve Bank of India’s Tarapore Committee recommended over 15 years ago that total convertibility was possible only when average inflation rate was between 3% and 5% and gross fiscal deficit to GDP ratio was around 3.5%. Just before the devastating Asian financial crisis of 1997, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia were in a similar situation. So, despite the fact that there is no full capital account convertibility for the Rupee, fears for the future of India, Asia’s 3rd largest economy, are growing. Standard and Poor’s which gave poor ratings to 36 out of 128 countries gave India a BBB- the lowest in investment grade and has put the country on watch. The threat is that in two years India might be awarded junk status. Fitch ratings agency has also a similar view about the Indian economy. Many analysts believe the problem is one of policy paralysis and endemic corruption, and suggest that a clear vision needs to be articulated about development of infrastructure, strengthening the domestic market, welcoming foreign investment and predictability of taxation laws. The Centre has not done much in the past many years on this count. Despite all that, IKEA has announced its plan to invest $1.5 billion in India in the long term and similar announcements are being made by other firms. So all is not lost, yet. The India Growth story and the Rupee's glory could be reinstated provided the right steps are taken.

THERE IS MORE TO PREDICTING RAIN THAN remembering to take your umbrella

There is an old saying that there’s no knowing the gender of a child in gestation and when it will rain. Trying to find out the first is illegal in our country and rightly so considering the ever-rising numbers of female foeticide. But there is a lot at stake depending upon when and how much it will rain —when the livelihood of our 235 million farmers and the overall economy are heavily dependent upon the monsoons. Rains could wreak havoc, too, as it is doing in Assam right now (The death toll has hit 61 and 75,000 are homeless). The Indian Meteorological Department is infamous for never getting it right — whether to expect a drought or a flood. They had predicted that the monsoon would be bad last year: we got it in excess. It goes without saying how beneficial it would be for making the right preparations if we could foresee disasters — whether it’s a flood or drought. Now, finally and fortunately, we have woken up: A $75m (£48) mission is being launched to understand the south-west monsoon and forecast the rains more accurately using computer models. Better late than never.

The intrepid reporter Akhileshwari Ramagoud, former journalist and the current head of the Mass Communication department at Loyola Academy talks about where the subject stands in the city today they were living in those cities/countries. Deccan Herald was a pioneer in this regard as in many others. I have reported from almost every continent but reporting in India was always more challenging and so much more varied. The challenge of my five years in Washington was both professional and personal because I had left behind my two daughters in India. Did you ever have to wake up at 4 in the morning to chase a story? Oh yes! There were times when I worked right through the night like when we report results of elections. Considering the 12+ hour time difference between India and USA, there were days when I managed with barely a couple of hours of sleeping. As for getting up at 4 p m, the then chief minister N T Rama Rao was fond of having cabinet meetings and press conferences early in the morning. When I asked for an interview, he agreed to talk to me at 5 am! When I reached him, he not only was ready to take questions but even offered breakfast and coffee!

What inspired your choice of career? I guess I was always a rebel..I wanted to do something that was not ‘regular ‘. When as an undergraduate student in Nizam College in Hyderabad, I heard that a senior of mine was doing a Journalism course in Osmania University. I jumped at the idea and after finishing BA, I joined the one-year BJ course (Bachelor in Journalism). Interestingly there were only three girls in a class of 40. What do you have to say about the status of mass communication courses in the city? I am very happy that mass communication courses are very popular among the young which I believe is mainly due to the popularity of TV. It has become a much accepted career choice. For some of course it is a glamorous profession, considering the recognition and fame if your job is in front of a camera. Different colleges offer different quality of courses, but it is very crucial to have good infrastructure such as a studio for TV. A good faculty is also a must. Both these are in short supply in the

colleges that offer Mass Communication courses in the city.

A COMMON SAYING IN THE EDITIORIAL ROOMS BACK THEN WAS THAT STUDENTS HAD TO UNLEARN EVERYTHING THEY LEARNT IN COLLEGE BECAUSE THEY CAME TO THE PROFESSION WITH SEVERAL MISCONCEPTIONS.

Why do you think there is a lack of proper faculty for the subject? Any Mass Communication and Journalism course needs faculty that is experienced in the media. This is a skill-based course. Who can be a better teacher than a person who has worked in the profession? But we have very few people who have put in some years in the profession and who can or are willing to teach. This problem has been persisting since I was a student in the 1970s. Perhaps if the pay structure can be improved in the private colleges, more media professionals can be lured into teaching.

felt I could share all my experiences and skills with the younger generation and what better way than to teach? Fortunately for me, by the time I was ready to teach several universities and colleges in Hyderabad had begun courses in Mass Communication and Journalism.

What inspired you to take up teaching? I taught in my alma mater OU way back in 1980s for about five years. But at that point, I felt quite constricted by the atmosphere around me and I decided to quit teaching and go back to reporting. Since then, I have never once regretted this decision. Journalism has given me everything I have in life, both in terms of fulfillment and materially. Somewhere along the line, I

In an average class, what kind of students do you generally encounter? While most people of my generation dismiss youngsters as nonserious, immature or selfish, my experience with students who are around 18 or even less, is extremely encouraging. They just need some guidance, some encouragement and inspiration. I find my students very sensitive, positive and concerned about issues around them such as

poverty, deprivation, caste and gender discrimination. I get the most response from the class when I relate anecdotes to them! Is a proper academic mass com background a must for a journalist? Earlier we used to believe that journalists are born, not made. In fact, my seniors in the profession looked upon students of journalism courses with great skepticism. A common saying in the editiorial rooms then was that students of journalism had to unlearn everything they learned in college because they came to the profession with several misconceptions. While that has a grain of truth a strong academic background and knowledge of issues of national and international importance is of great help in getting started and in understanding the issues that we report. Tell us something about your experience as Foreign correspondent for Deccan Herald. It was absolutely awesome! I was perhaps the only woman then who was posted to Washington DC as foreign correspondent. Most of the foreign postings were given only to men or if there were women, then

What was it like to be a woman in a male dominated realm when you started? This question will take me hours to respond. I remember I was the only woman on the desk in Deccan Herald where I started my career. Later, when I moved to reporting, I would be the only reporter at a press conference. Fellow reporters would simply ignore me because they were not used to having a woman around. It took many years to be accepted and greeted by male colleagues. I recall an incident vividly, where this is obvious. After the foreign stint, I came back to Hyderabad as DH’s correspondent. A Doordarshan midranking reporter asked me what I issues I reported for DH. When I replied “politics” he burst out guffawing loudly! Apparently, he thought women couldn’t report politics. How much has changed since then? Sadly, not much. While there is some acceptance of women reporters and journalists, they continue to be second class citizens in the media as much as in the society. Women in top positions in the media are an exception not just in India but across the world. Glass ceiling is very much a part of our lives in the media.

Chew on this What you eat has a lot to do with your dental health. So if you’ve noticed that you seem to be battling more cavities, decays and bad breath, you might want to recheck what you’ve been eating Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

H

ow often have you had to turn away as a friend leaned in closer to talk to you, simply because they have the worst breath ever? Or have you noticed that almost every time you visit the dentist it is for a tooth ache, cavity or simply tooth decay? You might dismiss most of these problems due to lack of oral hygiene, but little do you know that your teeth are a reflection of what you eat, much like your physical appearance. Those pearlies that you so love to flash do bear the brunt of most of the junk food you keep downing with no second thoughts. While enough has been said about the effects of changing lifestyles and bad eating habits on health, not too many realise that it does ruin that perfect

smile too. “It is no hidden fact that people consume a lot more junk food these days when compared to earlier. What they don’t realise is that junk food is more sticky and is retained in the grooves of the teeth, giving rise to the number of bacteria and thereby accelerating dental problems like tooth decay, halitosis, cavities etc,” says Dr Rashmi Shetty, a Bangalore-based conservative and endodontist. “Earlier people ate a lot of fibrous foods, which was not just good for health but for the teeth too. But these days processed foods are consumed a lot more and they are finer and rather sticky with a high retention factor. Aerated drinks too are to blame for erosion of teeth,” says Dr Rashmi. Problems like caries (caused by acids due to foods with fermented sugars and starches), halitosis (unpleasant odours from the mouth), tooth erosion, demineralisation (teeth getting dissolved) etc are

WHEN COMPARED TO FIBROUS FOODS, JUNK OR PROCESSED FOOD IS A LOT MORE STICKIER AND TENDS TO RETAIN IN THE GROOVES OF THE TEETH. THIS LEADS TO BUILD UP OF HARMFUL BACTERIA AND EVENTUALLY TOOTH DECAY. some of the common problems that occur these days due to changes in dietary habits. “We see a lot of cases of tooth decay in the 18 to 30 age group. After the age of 35, many people present with age-related dental problems. But the rate of dental issues in the younger lot is what is alarming. It is a clear reflection of the food they are consuming,” she explains. The tooth enamel especially is made up of minerals. This is constantly demineralised and remineralised. But the bacteria that fester in your mouth

Teach your child self control due to poor dietary habits and dental hygiene produce acids and this hinders the remineralisation process. Given the trend, most dentists focus on preventive aspects even in young adults, while compared to earlier when it was considered to be exclusively for paediatric dentistry. n Getting your teeth cleaned and checked once every six or eight months is recommended. n For those with a high risk of caries, fluoride application to strengthen the tooth helps. n Caries is mainly seen in grooves where food often gets stuck. So using sealants to fill these grooves might be a good idea. “Maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day, using a mouth rinse and cleaning your tongue, also helps curb the incidence of these problems to a great extent,” says Dr Rashmi.

Every time I go out with my 4-yearold son it’s a challenge. If we go to a store he wants everything. If I refuse he will throw a tantrum. It gets embarrassing as others think I am denying him. The truth is he is just too used to getting his way. How do I instil discipline and enforce the fact that he cannot behave this way? A young child of four is usually testing limits and thus they will keep doing things they are not supposed to do. Kids at this age are able to do things more independently and are temperamental. They have not learned self-control yet, so parents have to teach them by setting appropriate boundaries and limits. A sign of testing limits is seen when a child is constantly asking for or doing something they should not be. As a parent, it’s come down to one thing — consistency. If you are not consistent in setting boundaries, then the child will keep pushing the limits. So all significant adults involved in the child’s life need to provide the same and consistent limit setting with the child. When your child throws a tantrum, you have to still stay consistent and not give them what they want. The tantrum is to get what they want; thus by giving it to them, all you have done is taught the child that throwing a tantrum will ensure they get what they want. If you consistently apply the right limits, the tantrums will cease, but remember that your tolerance has to be high as you might have to put up with 10-15 tantrums before there is a change. Explain to the child why he cannot have what he wants. Promote positive behaviour with rewards, show love and affection, stay detached from the situation when you get upset at them and use the opportunity to teach them the right way to behave. Parenting is an exhausting yet enriching experience. Your child depends on you to learn behaviour. (The writer is a counselling psychologist at the Hyderabad Academy of Psychology. vaccine against nicotine addiction may soon be available. Researchers announced Wednesday in the latest issue of Science Translational Medicine that trials of the one-dose vaccine aimed at abating nicotine addiction have shown promise in mice, the Wall Street Journal reported. To conduct the study, researchers inserted a gene for a nicotine antibody into the liver cells of mice. This prevented the majority of the nicotine given to the mice from ever reaching their brains, CBS news reported. Professor Ronald Crystal, the lead author of the study, told the BBC that years of research is still needed before the vaccine will be made available to the public, however he says these tests

rohn’s disease refers to an illness that causes inflammation in the gut. It is also known as regional enteritis It can affect any part of the digestive system from the mouth to the anus, but most often the ileum and colon. The cause of crohn’s disease is a combination of environmental factors such as environment, immune system and microbes as well as various genetic factors. The symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, headache and a feeling of being unwell. In certain cases there may be rectal bleeding as well. Those with crohn’s disease are at increased risk of ankylosing spondylitis, eye disorders, kidney stones, cancer and erythema nodosum. Diagnosis for crohn’s disease includes blood tests, endoscopy and various radiological tests. Treatment includes medication for diarrhoea and antiinflammatory medications.

It’s important for us to develop strategies that will be effective.” GLOBAL POST

Women who stand for longer have small babies

A

ccording to a study from Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, pregnant women who stood for lengthy periods at work had babies whose heads were around half an inch smaller. According to Medical News Today, the study authors followed nearly 5,000 mothers during their pregnancies. About four in 10 of the women worked jobs that required them to stand for eight hours per day. Those women who stood for long hours had babies with smaller heads on average. “While previous studies have looked at how standing for long periods of time may affect birth weight and delay birth — this is the first study to look at the effects on foetal growth,” lead author of the study Alex Burdorf, reported BBC. “We were not surprised that head size was smaller in pregnant women who stand for a long time at work, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was only by a modest amount 3 per cent smaller than average at birth.” The differences in head size began to be apparent by the third trimester. According to WebMed, the study does not confirm that smaller head sizes mean anything about brain development. The study was published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. DID YOU KNOW? Potato skins are good for health

W

henever we cook potatoes we make sure we very carefully wash them and then peel the skin off. While washing your potatoes is a good idea, keeping the skin on may be even better. It has been proven that the skin of the potato is the most nutritious part as it contains iron, calcium and fibre. But just washing the potato well and not removing the skin isn’t all we need. It is important that one should trim any blemishes and also remove any sprouts from the potato. One must be careful of the greenish chlorophyll on the potato skin as it contains solanine that is bitter and may cause headaches, cramps and diarrhoea. Solanine is also contained in potato sprouts.

Alec Baldwin marries again

A

lec Baldwin is once again the marrying man. The 30 Rock star, 54, and Hilaria Thomas, 28, tied the knot in front of family and friends Saturday at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Manhattan, according to People. Obviously no paparazzi were invited, but who made the cut? Ireland Baldwin, the groom’s daughter with exwife Kim Basinger, was in attendance, along with Jimmy Fallon and SNL and 30 Rock producer Lorne Michaels. Also on hand to celebrate the big day were Tina Fey, Woody Allen as well as Alec’s brothers Billy and Stephen. Baldwin began dating Thomas last summer and was immediately smitten.

They have had problems for a while. His career came first, always, and Katie wasn’t happy anymore.” “She wanted him home, and for them to be and for them to be together. But Tom only knows how to be a movie star,” the source said.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

TRIVIA History of Volleyball On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts (USA), William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called Mintonette as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. Another indoor sport, basketball, was catching on in the area, having been invented just ten miles away in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, only four years before. Mintonette was designed to be an indoor sport less rough than basketball for older members of the YMCA, while still requiring a bit of athletic effort. The first rules, written down by William G Morgan, called for a net 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) high, a 25×50 ft (7.6×15.2 m) court, and any number of players. A match was composed of nine innings with three serves for each team in each inning, and no limit to the number of ball contacts for each team before sending the ball to the opponents’ court.

In 1895, William G Morgan devised a game he called ‘mintonette’, which he intended as a gentle alternative to basketball for older members of his YMCA gym. A century later, Volleyball is anything but gentle – few sports on the Olympic programme offer such fast and exhileration action.

Field of play The volleyball court is 18m long and 9m wide. It is divided into two halves by a net that is 2.43m high for the men’s game, and 2.24m high for the women’s.

The basics Volleyball is played by two teams of six. The object is to land the ball in the opposition’s half of the court. Each team is allowed three touches of the ball before it must cross over the net. The key attacking move is the set and spike. Volleyball requires power and quick reactions. The match starts with three front-row players and three back-row players. At each serving opportunity, the players rotate one space. Each team has the opportunity to have one libero among their players on court. The libero is a specialist defensive player, and may not play any attacking shots.

Competition format Both the men’s and women’s Volleyball competitions beg-

in with a preliminary phase: the teams in each event are divided into two pools of six, and each team plays every other team in their pool. The eight best teams from this phase qualifies for the knockout phase, with the winners of the semis going for the go-ld. Matches are the best of fi-ve sets, with the first four set-s going to 25 points. The fifth goes to 15 points

Officials Two referees oversee each game. One sits on an elevated chair at the side of the court and the second is positioned on the other side of the court. They are assisted by scorers and line judges, who stand who indicate various line faults.

BLAKE BEATS BOLT, AGAIN KINGSTON: Yohan Blake upset reigning O l y m p i c champ Usain Bolt by winning the 200 metres in 19.80 seconds at the Jamaican Olympic Athletic Trials on Sunday, just two days after beating him in the 100 metres. It was the latest clash between the two Jamaican stars ahead of the London Olympics, where Bolt’s supremacy in the sprinting world appears to be in danger. Bolt finished second in 19.83 while Warren Weir also earned a ticket to the London Games by finishing third. “I have been working hard and am seeing it paying off now,” Blake said. “I was not surprised by the big win. I know what Bolt has to offer and I know he was not at 100 percent. I just tried to keep my form.” Blake had won his 200m semi-final in 19.93 seconds Saturday to set up another finals showdown with Bolt, who took his semi-final race in 20.26. Blake produced his first upset of the weekend and one of the biggest in the sport this year by beating Bolt in Friday’s 100m final with a time of 9.75 seconds, becoming the fourth fastest man ever in the event. Bolt, the 100m and 200m Olympic champ and world record holder, was second in 9.86 seconds after a poor start and Asafa Powell was third in 9.88 seconds.

It is not like I was blown away. I know what I need to do to get it right.” Blake ran the world-leading time on Sunday in the 200m but he did not beat his personal best of 19.26 which he set in September 2011. Spearmon looks for redemption Jim Slater

EUGENE,

OREGON:

W a l l a c e Spearmon gave himself another chance at an Olympic medal in the 200 meters after being disqualified in the 2008 final by winning on Sunday at the US Olympic Track and Field Trials. Spearmon, whose lane violation late in the Beijing Olympic final cost him a bronze medal, surged ahead with 50 meters remaining and took the trials title in a

wind-aided 19.82 seconds, a 2.3m/sec tailwind boosting him to the finish. “That’s something that has definitely been on my mind since 2008,” Spearmon said. “It’s hard enough to make one team. If I didn’t make the team this year, that would have been on my mind for the rest of my life. “This is a chance at redemption. I don’t take my second chances lightly. I’m going to go out there and leave it all on the track.” Maurice Mitchell was second in 20.14 with Isiah Young third in 20.16.

Phelps is headed to the London Olympics with a chance to match his glittering eight-gold haul of 2008. Phelps won the 100m butterfly on the penultimate night of the US Olympic swimming trials on Sunday in 51.14sec to claim a fifth individual berth for London. Phelps was nowhere near his world record of 49.82sec, but he was fastest in the world this year and ominously for his rivals, he said it was a ragged effort that could be vastly improved. “It was a pretty crappy first 50 and a pretty terrible finish,” said Phelps, who rallied from sixth at the turn to finish ahead of Tyler McGill. McGill was fourth at the turn, but won the battle for second in 51.32 ahead of Ryan Lochte. “It’s done, we’re done,” Phelps said of his trials campaign, although of course he hopes the best is yet to come in London.

KIEV: Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon spoke of his disappointment at having missed out on the Euro 2012 title but said he could only congratulate winners Spain. The world champions were a cut above on the day and romped to a 4-0 thrashing that was accentuated by Italy playing the last half hour a man down after Thiago Motta limped off once coach Cesare Prandelli had already exhausted his substitutions. By then Italy were already two goals down and reduced to virtual spectators, according to midfielder Daniele De Rossi. But for Buffon there was no shame in losing to the best. “For many of our squad it was their first final so that’s why it’s a huge disappointment,” he said. “But it’s also true that in such an important match when there’s the substantial difference that you saw, all you can do is clap your hands and applaud the others.” Buffon said he could only think of one other occasion when he had played in a side so totally dominated: a 3-0 Confederations Cup group

espite having seen his team thrashed 4-0 by Spain in Sunday’s Euro 2012 final in Kiev, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said he was proud of their achievements at the tournament. Italy went into the competition in Poland and Ukraine beneath the cloud of a match-fixing scandal, and seeking to atone for an embarrassing group-stage exit at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. KIEV: Spain confirmed their status as one of the greatest national teams in football history by overwhelming Italy 4-0 in Sunday’s Euro 2012 final in Kiev to retain their European crown. Vicente del Bosque’s team became the first side to successfully defend a European Championship title, as well as the first to win three consecutive major tournaments after their triumphs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. Accused in some quarters of having lost their ability to excite, Spain produced a thrilling demonstration of attacking football to confirm beyond doubt that this remains a

golden age for Spanish football. Andres Iniesta and Xavi were the architects of victory at the Olympic Stadium, playing key roles in goals by David Silva, Jordi Alba and Fernando Torres, who teed up fellow substitute Juan Mata for Spain’s fourth. “After we scored the first goal, Italy were dangerous, but we reacted well,” said Spain coach Del Bosque. “We had possession of the ball, we put pressure on them, and there was depth to our play. So we’re very happy. This success in Spanish football is something historic, and now we have to look to the future and try to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.” The match-winner in the Euro

Woods wins National, is 2nd on all-time list BETHESDA,

MARYLAND:

Tiger Woods won the storm-hit AT&T National on Sunday for his 74th career title to pass Jack Nicklaus for second place alltime on the PGA Tour list. Woods won for the third time this year by outlasting fellow American Bo Van Pelt in a backnine duel that went down to the final hole. “What an incredible week,” Woods said. “I remember there was a time when people were saying I could never win again.” Woods closed with a twounder 69, giving him a two-shot victory and moving him into second place on the tour’s career list, one ahead of Nicklaus. He needs eight more to equal Sam Snead. Woods, who finished at eightunder 276, took the lead on 17 where Van Pelt made bogey after his ball sailed over the green.

One driver killed in Mughal Road Rally

SRINAGAR: A driver was killed and his navigator critically injured on the last leg of the Mughal Road rally when their vehicle rolled into a deep gorge at Simthan in Anantnag district, officials said today. Jitender Singh lost control of his vehicle near Simthan last

evening while on the return leg of the Mughal road rally, they said. While Singh died on the spot, his navigator Ashish Mahajan was critically injured and has been admitted to a hospital. The condition of Mahajan has shown no signs of improvement since last night, doctors attending on him said. The third Mughal Road Car Rally began here on Saturday with 93 teams including Kashmir’s first motorsport team, Baba Reshi Lions. It is scheduled to be flagged in later in the day. The 600-kilometre rally passes through the historic Mughal road that was once traversed by the caravans of Mughal kings. PTI

What an incredible week. I remember there was a time when people were saying I could never win again. Tiger Woods All Woods had to do was maintain the lead on the final hole. He sealed the victory with a superb nine-iron approach that landed and rolled onto the flat part of the green on 18. “It was downhill, the wind was hot and the ball was flying,”

said Woods, who also won at Muirfield Village and Bay Hill this year. “It fit my eye for some reason. I just saw it and hit it.” His win capped a bizarre week of golf at the Congressional Country Club course. A violent heat-fuelled storm wreaked havoc on the course, blowing down trees and forcing organizers to shut the course to spectators on Saturday, making for a peculiar scene as the golfers teed off without galleries. “Yesterday was a silent day, but I think everyone saved it up for today,” Woods said after the spectators were allowed back on the course on Sunday. The clean-up operation was extensive and the players still had to navigate some small piles of debris, just off some of the fairways, that didn’t get cleared in time for the final round. AFP

GAYLESTORM THUNDERS ON

No matter where he plays or against which bowler, Chris Gayle is always in a punishing mood. That the West Indies board lifted the ban on him augurs well for world cricket. Fans in Florida will endorse AFP that after his showing against the New Zealand in the two Twenty20 on Saturday and Sunday. SERAING, BELGIUM: Tour de France favourite Bradley Wiggins stayed in the hunt for the race’s yellow jersey Sunday after a “sketchy” finale to stage one that took down Sky teammate Michael Rogers. In a thrilling finale won by Slovakian Peter Sagan just ahead of race leader Fabian Cancellara, Wiggins stayed out of trouble to finish 16th and stay second overall at 07sec behind Swiss powerhouse Cancellara. Wiggins’ main rival Cadel Evans finished 20th in the same time, meaning the Londoner retains his 10sec lead on the Australian, who won the race in

2011. Because Team Sky had dominated the teams’ classification in the opening prologue on Saturday, the team started the 198km stage from Liege to Seraing wearing yellow helmet covers, in accordance with new race rules. Wiggins was also dressed, uncharacteristically, in the green jersey usually worn by the sprinters during the points competition. Heading into Monday’s second stage from Vise to Tournai, the helmet covers will remain although Liquigas rider Sagan will wear the green jersey because he is second in the points competition after Cancellara, who is in yellow.
