hey made a good “living” from deceit for quite some time, but as all good things come to an end, they fell into the long arms of law at last. The “panch pyare” or the five chums were entrapped three days ago by the Uppal police quite by accident. They come from varied stations in life: three are stringers with local television channels, one a security man, and one is into transport business. Sub Inspector N Naga Chary unrolled the plot for Postnoon. The five found out that heavy amounts are extracted from lorry drivers by various forces right from police to

excise and forest departments. They formed a gang, bought some forest official uniforms and insignia, rented a Scorpio with a beacon to be used in case of emergency and began the game of extorting money from lorry drivers on the National Highway at night. “They used to snare 10-12 lorries a night posing as forest officials and earned a hefty sum and it was a jolly life for some time,” recalled Chary, adding, “but their luck ran out recently.” Their style, said Chary, would dim the performance of the “style mannan” Rajnikant. Two of the five are well built with an official air about them. They donned the role of ‘higher officials’ and would sit in the vehicle with a gravity befitting sincere senior officials, talking into a walkie-talkie (which did not function). And the other

two minions would intimidate the driver and bargain for a sum. Many who did not want trouble paid up and sped away. The few reluctant Joes would be dragged to the “officers” sitting in the car. The officers, with the appropriate officious air would be talking with ‘higher ups’ and make the driver wait. The “officer’ would pretend to talk to the “chief conservator” quoting the lorry number. The officer, would then snarl at the driver and ask details about the goods in the lorry and demand to see the papers. The alarmed driver would pay up and leave. However, the game came to a halt three days ago. How? They were on their usual nocturnal hunt along the Highway near Uppal when they came upon a driver who proved a roughneck. He objected to the heavy sum demanded and a

ruckus ensued. The quarrel resulted in a traffic jam and the Uppal police patrol that rolled by probed the source of the blockade and were told that forest officials were checking a lorry. The police came up, demurred at first so as not to antagonise forest officials. The patrolling police politely asked the “forest officials” what the matter was and the lorry driver, instead, offered the explanation. Chary said the police smelled a rat and asked for the identity of the officers. They insisted they are officials but it did not wash, and suddenly, three of the five took to their

heels and the police immediately placed the remaining two under arrest. They were identified as Mohd Sadiq, 45, of LB Nagar who is into transport business, Abdul Qader, 48, a security guard lived at Balapur of Pahadi Shareef. The three accomplices who bolted are identified as Sreedhar Reddy, Srinivas, and Krishna Yadav, all three are said to be local reporters with two television channels. The hunt is on for the absconding. Enquiries with the channels and their residences revealed that they are hiding, police said.

he TDP, salivating at the UP scene where Akhilesh Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son, got installed as the chief minister, is raring to induct Lokesh, son of party chief Chandrababu Naidu as the second-incommand. The decks seems to be getting cleared for Lokesh’s entry into the Telugu Desam Party, though the NTR family feud still exists, which had so far blocked Lokesh’s formal entry. The ongoing review by the party president to find out the reasons for drubbing of the party in 18 Assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency has become the platform to pitch for the entry of Lokesh into politics. These review meetings are being held since the last 10 days at the party headquarters in the City. The leaders are saying that they don’t have direct access to the party president to express their views and that they need a leader who can act as a mediator between them and the president. “On

many occasions, we wanted to express our views to the party president. But we could not do it due to lack of direct access to Naidu. Lack of access is one of the reasons for the party’s defeat in various elections since 2004,” Telugu Yuvata leader MA

hey are the inheritors of the rich and versatile colonial culture. They also played a crucial role in nation building by rendering their services to the armed forces, Indian Railways and Postal services before and after independence. But, the drastic changes in society in the last few decades has them struggling to keep their injeritance intact. The community in question is the Anglo-Indian community. With a population of 68,000 across the State, the community has 8,000 people living in the City alone. The elite tag that this community carries has made them aloof and it is this that has forced the community elders and representatives to make demands publicly for fulfillment of their rights and equitable distribution of resources on par with others in the country. According to Christine Lazarus, an MLA, most of her community members are not aware of welfare programmes and benefits being

extended to the community by the State government. “The State government is implementing many welfare programmes for the welfare of Anglo-Indians, but many of these benefits are not enjoyed by them due to lack of awareness,” she said at the National Convention Echo Meet held in the City recently. Lazarus further informed that the State has a total of 185 seats reserved for the Anglo-Indian community in professional courses like MBBS, Engineering, MBA, MCA and Law courses. But out of these185 seats, only 60-70 seats are being filled every year, she added. She explained that she is planning to launch a series of programmes to create awareness among the community members about these welfare schemes.

Poverty looms The shocking fact about the community is that some of the community members are leading lives in abject poverty due to lack of proper education and opportunities. Lazarus demanded that the government provide housing facilities under schemes like Rajiv Awas Yojana and JNNURM. “Many of our community members are poor. So, I requested the government to allocate 300 houses under the weaker section housing schemes,” she said. The community is also being ignored by government officials in census-2012. Anglo-Indians have been considered as Christians instead of a group with a separate identity. Christine feels that these measures only lead to loss of identity and added that the government should take measures to protect their identity.

These leaders feel that Lokesh’s induction would give a fillip to the party’s youth wing and also boost party workers’ morale. “The much talked about cash transfer scheme promised by the party during 2009 general elections was Lokesh Babu’s brainchild. If he gets into active politics, it would definitely strengthen the party,” Telugunadu Students Federation (TNSF) president N Narsi Reddy said. A group of TNSF leaders recently met the party president Chandrababu Naidu and submitted a memorandum requesting him to appoint Lokesh as Youth wing president of the party. In the memorandum, the student leaders contended that it is essential for the party to bring Lokesh into active politics to ensure the victory of the party in the 2014 assembly elections. Citing the Uttar Pradesh state example where SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh became chief minister, the leaders have said that Lokesh can do an Akhilesh in AP. On the other hand, some senior leaders wanted Lokesh to be made in-charge of the Chandragiri Assembly constituency, the birth place of party president Chandrababu Naidu. A group of leaders from this constituency met the party president and made this request a few months ago.

TDP leader joins YSR Congress A

s expected, migration from losing parties to winners’ camp has begun. Telugu Desam Party Kollapur Assembly constituency in-charge Jagadheshwara Rao has resigned from the party’s primary membership and his post on Sunday. Rao told media persons that he had faxed his resignation letter to the party president N Chandrababu Naidu. He announced that he would join the YSR Congress Party shortly. It may be mentioned that many of the TDP functionaries were leaving the party and joining either the TRS or the YSRC, following the debacle of the party in the recent by-elections. NSS

Burglars strike, decamp with gold

he residents of Doyens colony in Chandanagar were in for a rude shock this morning following a burglary in their locality. The burglars took away 15 tolas of gold and a Maruti Zen car owned by the victims. Speaking to Postnoon, Chandanagar police inspector N Venkateswarlu confirmed the news and said that a group of seven members committed the crime, which took place at 3.15 am today. “The gang entered the house (HNO. 96) of one Casper, an ITI owner, by making hole in the door. The gang threatened the family members with revolvers and tied them to chairs. They later took 15 tolas gold and escaped in the car owned by the family,” the inspector said. The police have launched a massive hunt for the culprits and roped in the clues team to identify the burglars. The inspector told Postnoon that the burglary is the handy work of a professional gang. Incidentally, this is the first such incident under Chandanagar police station limits.

stepped into Rasoolpura equipped with my handydandy tool belt composed of all the equipment necessary to build a successful entrepreneur. I had the frameworks, the formulae, some experience, an idea of what it meant to be an ‘entrepreneur’, and how these traits, behaviours and characteristics could be built in others. What had not really crossed my mind were the tools that I was missing: I had no understanding of the residents that made up this community, had never lived in India, no knowledge of Telugu, a Hindi vocabulary that consisted of the most common words from Bollywood films and whatever transferred over from my limited grasp of Gujarati. “Developing entrepreneurship potential”, the objective of my focus in Rasoolpura, was going to be much more difficult than I had imagined. It has been almost 11 months now since I arrived in Rasoolpura as an Indicorps (Indicorps is an non-profit organisation that encourages Indians around the world to actively participate in India’s progress through a grassroots service fellowship programme) Fellow partnered with the NGO Bhumi. I came to Bhumi to focus on entrepreneurship development in Rasoolpura. Ultimately, we want to create a micro-entrepreneurship hub (MEH), a platform for potential and existing entrepreneurs to access skill development trainings, mentorship support, market linkages, financial resources and

INSIGHT INTO... Rasoolpura information. The MEH should be self-sustaining in that the members are the ones who are managing and growing it. The first step was to develop an entrepreneurship curriculum with which we could attract community members and make them entrepreneurs. Upon developing the curriculum we spent several months trying to interest women to take our workshops, with little success. Nayeem Bhai, one of the community leadership fellows at Bhumi, would assist with identifying women who might be interested in starting businesses. Each time

we did not get further than a few meetings before everyone dropped out. The women wanted us to think of a business idea, and then give them piece-work that they could do at home and we would pay them for. While I still hold that the best business ideas will come from the people in the community, I did not think about where the creativity to come up with these ideas comes from. Creativity is required for idea generation — and creativity requires stimulireading new material, visiting new places, meeting different people, watching the news etc. I was working with a largely Muslim population, the women I was encouraging to think of new business ideas rarely spoke to different people outside their family and their neighbours, were illiterate, and not allowed to venture too far out of their homes. Where were they going to get the stimuli to generate new ideas? These women were not ready for the curriculum I had created, I was trying to sow seeds in soil that was too hard and undernourished to accept them. The seeds I had created were too big and required a very fertile soil, we decided to create new seeds that could pave the way for more fertile soil. The team at Bhumi started a jute and cloth product manufacturing enterprise to bridge this gap. Slowly through observing how business runs, interacting with customers, and most of all, building confidence, these women may be ready to start their own enterprises. The frustration that came along with so many failed meet-

ings and the inability to pilot out this curriculum I had put so much of myself into was huge. I was constantly battling between the ideals I had set for how things should be implemented, and what it was the women of the community wanted. My failures, (and this year I have collected quite a portfolio of them) have taught me more than my successes. Each time I learn something that allows me to be more effec-

With the support of my mentor, Professor Radhika Meenakshi, a team of us surveyed about 50 micro-entrepreneurs in Rasoolpura, ranging from chai bandis to café’s. The statistics we found were revealing — about 60 per cent do not have bank accounts and do not make enough profit to cover their home expenses, and only 30 per cent of the ventures were run by women.

How is it that micro-entrepreneurship is a means to poverty alleviation when most of the businesses could not cover home expenses and therefore they had little chance of growing their ventures? It was no wonder that most of these micro-business owners would much rather have a steady job than a business, and it was no wonder so few people in the

community were interested in becoming entrepreneurs. We identified several key challenges that they faced — infrastructure, financing, market linkages, skills, information, and competition. Fortunately, there are many organisations focused on addressing these challenges. The issue is that very few of the residents of Rasoolpura know about them. In order to foster an entrepreneurship environment we first needed people to feel motivated and inspired to be entrepreneurs, and in order to do this, community members need to see that there is a chance of success, that there are people who have already succeeded, and that there are organisations that want to support entrepreneurs. With this conclusion in mind we are having a microentrepreneurship mela. The mela will bring together potential and existing micro-entrepreneurs and organisations working in the space of micro-entrepreneurship development. We hope that with motivational speakers, success stories of micro-entrepreneurs from similar backgrounds, and exposure to the plethora of services available, we can inspire more of the community. We also hope that connections can be established among organisations present so that a more comprehensive solution to microentrepreneurship development is achieved. We hope that this is the start of a yearly event that can inspire new entrepreneurs. Indian mythology like Mahabharata and Ramayana are richer than those of the West and children need to know about them,” said Sudarshan B. However, they were also sceptical that gamers may not accept the sudden change, which is why they decided to come up with an essential multi-player platform and introducing old board games like Snakes and Ladders and Ludo on the web. “As a child I used to play several board games but children these days are not even aware that such games exist. Today everything is on the web. We thought why not bring the old games back online and save the dying art of playing board games,” he adds. It took them six months to develop these games. All of them are uploaded on

a website called Yuya Vyuha. When asked why they chose the name Vyuha they said that gaming is all about strategies and they also have a strategy in mind. Explaining further they said, “Our strategy is to get people involved in Indian gaming. Few Eves in Asia’s top jobs Barclays chairman to SEOUL: Companies in Asia’s leading economies have “strikingly” few women in senior jobs, missing out on a vital pool of talent to fuel the region’s growth, consultancy firm McKinsey & Company said Sunday. In a survey covering 744 firms of 10 major stock markets in the Asia-Pacific, McKinsey said women on average account for only six percent of board seats compared to 17 per cent in Europe and 15 per cent in the US. Women hold eight per cent of executive committee seats in the Asian firms, still lower than the average of 10 per cent in Europe and 14 per cent in the United States, it said, calling the numbers in Asia “strikingly low”. “It’s a huge waste of talent, as half of Asian graduates are female. And it is a waste that

Asian companies can ill afford, given the severe shortage of senior managers in the region,” said the report titled “Women Matter”. Australia, Hong Kong and China topped the list of female presence in the boardroom, with women accounting for 13, nine and eight per cent respectively in these top jobs, while South Korea, Japan and India were at the bottom. Rich hoard gold, art in Swiss banks NEW DELHI: Amid a global crackdown against alleged black money in secret accounts of Swiss banks, their bankers are selling a new safe-haven idea to their rich clients from India and other countries — the highvalue 1,000 franc notes to be stored in safe deposit boxes. These boxes — kept inside the premises of Swiss banks — are also said to be being used to stash gold, diamond, paintings and art works among other valuables — apparently because of limited risk of catching the preying eyes of foreign governments having signed banking information exchange treaties with Switzerland. According to industry sources, bankers are telling their rich clients that Switzerland’s tax and information exchange treaties with India and other countries are mostly limited to funds in customers’ savings, deposit and investment accounts, and do not apply to the safe deposit boxes. As a result, the demand has soared to record high levels for the safe deposit boxes and the 1,000 Swiss franc banknotes in

Switzerland, as rich of the world are rushing to get them. As per the data available with Switzerland’s central bank SNB (Swiss National Bank), the thousand-franc notes now account for 60 per cent of total value of all Swiss banknotes in circulation, up from about 50 per cent a year ago. Replying to PTI queries, SNB confirmed that there was a significant surge in demand for

thousand-franc notes and admitted that this could be due to a trend to store the money and a higher demand was being noticed from abroad for these high-value currency notes. NEW DELHI: The mentally retarded daughter of a man convicted for rash driving in a 19-year-old case has led a court into adopting a lenient view and letting him off with a meagre fine. Central Delhi resident Ish Sharma, convicted for rash driving and causing grevious hurt to a person, was let off with a fine of `10,000 after he submitted before the court that he has a 14-

year-old mentally retarded daughter to take care of. Metropolitan Magistrate Hem Raj perused the medical record and certificates of the mentally retarded girl, said, “The counsel for the convict had filed on record photocopies of the medical certificate of her daughter showing that the innocent girl is suffering from the disease of mental retardation which cannot be cured medically. “The medical treatment of the girl would be seriously affected and the education of his (convict’s) son would also be jeopardised if the convict is sent behind bars. In my opinion, by imposing an appropriate sentence of fine would suffice the purpose and the convict would be more careful in the future”. The court imposed a fine of `1,000 on him for rash driving and another `9,000 for causing grievous hurt. Sharma told the court that he is the sole bread earner of the family which consists of his wife and school-going children. He also said that he has a 14-yearold daughter who is mentally retarded and if he is sent to jail, she would be deprived of the love and affection of his father as well as her medical treatment would be seriously affected. Pakistan will “push” India to share details of the recent arrest of Ansari alias Abu Jundal when the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries meet in Delhi this week, the report said. The two-day talks between the Foreign Secretaries, beginning on July 4, are expected to be dominated by Ansari’s arrest and subsequent claims by Indian authorities, the report further said. The Foreign Office official said Pakistan will ask India to share details of Ansari’s arrest. “India has yet not shared anything with us about this arrest,” the official said. The driver immediately applied the brakes and reported the matter to the police,” the actor’s father and eminent writer Salim Khan told IANS. The incident occurred around 11 pm Sunday near St. Andrew’s Church when the vehicle was headed towards the home of the Khans at Bandstand. The car was being driven by Dhananjay Pimpale, the driver, who has been arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He will be presented before a local court later Monday. Pimpale was subjected to a medical test shortly after the incident and was not under intoxication, preliminary information indicated. Senior Pak Taliban commander killed ISLAMABAD: A senior Pakistani Taliban commander was killed in recent clashes with security forces in the Dir region bordering Afghanistan, media reports said today. Taliban commander Mullah Mansoor was killed in a gun battle with security forces, state-run Radio Pakistan quoted official sources as saying. Other media reports said Mansoor succumbed to injuries sustained during a clash between security forces and militants in Dir region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, which has witnessed cross-border attacks by Pakistani Taliban fighters based in Afghanistan. Mansoor was taken to a hospital in Afghanistan, where he died.

Linking those films with the original would be completely unfair and not begin to describe the breadth of the new information presented. Peter Joseph does an AMAZING job bringing little-know concepts about the very nature of our society to the forefront. It would be cruel not to watch this movie, because there is so much life-transforming information in the above mentioned films that it will blow you away when you first watch it. n March 2011, the Indian Parliament passed the Coinage Amendments Bill, thereby making the melting or destruction of legal tender punishable by seven years of imprisonment. A coin is a medium of exchange as well as a store of value: when the value of its metal exceeds a coin’s face value, the coin would be valuable more as metal than as currency — hence the legislation. In 2007, police caught a gang of criminals in North India – they were melting huge quantities of coins to make razors to be exported to Bangladesh! Because of widespread instances as this, in June 2011, the Reserve Bank of India withdrew the 25 paise coin from circulation, acknowledging the plummeting value of India’s currency. Since this demonetization of the 25 paise, the Rupee itself has had a rather close shave, buffeted as it has been by 9% inflation at home and a 23% decline in its value vis-à-vis the US Dollar. In the present scenario of universal economic gloom the Rupee suddenly appears unattractive, but it certainly has had its days of glory. The currency got its name from the Sanskrit word rūpya which means silver, and was first introduced as legal tender by Sher Shah Suri in 1540. Its value was based on the silver standard i.e. on its silver content. However, when vast quantities of silver were discovered in the US and in European colonies in the mid-1800s, silver became cheaper, and the Rupee lost its relative value as other currencies were based on the gold standard. Despite this first fall in its value, the Rupee continued to be a successful currency internationally except when, in 1910, to commemorate George V’s ascension as Emperor of India a new Rupee coin was issued depicting the King wearing the Order of the Indian Elephant. Because of poor workmanship the elephant looked like a pig and the ‘Pig Rupee’ had to be withdrawn to appease the incensed Muslims across the Empire! The Rupee was used extensively in East Africa — in Mozambique, Kenya and Uganda.

It was in use in North Africa in Somalia and in South Africa in Natal. In Ethiopia, the Italian colonial administration too minted the Rupia and its unit, the Besa. The East India Company Rupee was briefly used in Australia in the early 19th century. While Sri Lanka did it already in 1869, India decimalised the Rupee in 1957 when the 16-anna Rupee made of 64 pice or paise was replaced by the present Rupee made of 100 paise. In 1959, the Government of India issued the Gulf Rupee meant to be used as the currency of Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Oman. It was only in 1966 when India devalued the Rupee that these countries introduced their own currencies and pegged them to the US Dollar. The national currencies of Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Seychelles and Sri Lanka continue to have the name Rupee, while Indonesia’s rupiah and the Maldives’ rufiyah are also named after it. The Rupee’s next fall was the devaluation in 1991 when a balance of payments crisis loomed over India. It has since been falling steadily for the past 21 years at a compounded annual rate of 3.78% vis-à-vis the Dollar. What is wrong with a currency losing its value? In neighboring China the policy is to deliberately keep the Yuan undervalued. A weaker Rupee would make exports more attractive: the IT sector would benefit because of the competitive advantage to Indian exporters. It would also help in the medium term to set right any trade imbalance. It is the Eurozone that is at the heart of an interna-

tional financial contagion whereas the Government of India recently pledged $10 billion to the Eurozone war chest. India has a revised GDP growth expectation of 5.5% — so are things really so bad and alarming? Actually, yes. India imports 70% of its oil and that is a monthly bill of $6 billion when prices are low. Costlier imports fuel inflation — official data show that vegetables are already costlier by 49% and pulses by 17%. Because they hedge their revenues the IT sector does not automatically gain from a lower Rupee: IT giants Infosys and Wipro lost over 15% and 10% of their value in recent months. Current account and fiscal account deficits are alarmingly high — the present fiscal deficit to GDP ratio of over 4% is threatening to go up to 5.4%. This is scary and also puts paid to plans for full capital account convertibility of the Indian Rupee since the Reserve Bank of India’s Tarapore Committee recommended over 15 years ago that total convertibility was possible only when average inflation rate was between 3% and 5% and gross fiscal deficit to GDP ratio was around 3.5%. Just before the devastating Asian financial crisis of 1997, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia were in a similar situation. So, despite the fact that there is no full capital account convertibility for the Rupee, fears for the future of India, Asia’s 3rd largest economy, are growing. Standard and Poor’s which gave poor ratings to 36 out of 128 countries gave India a BBB- the lowest in investment grade and has put the country on watch. The threat is that in two years India might be awarded junk status. Fitch ratings agency has also a similar view about the Indian economy. Many analysts believe the problem is one of policy paralysis and endemic corruption, and suggest that a clear vision needs to be articulated about development of infrastructure, strengthening the domestic market, welcoming foreign investment and predictability of taxation laws. The Centre has not done much in the past many years on this count. Despite all that, IKEA has announced its plan to invest $1.5 billion in India in the long term and similar announcements are being made by other firms. So all is not lost, yet. The India Growth story and the Rupee's glory could be reinstated provided the right steps are taken.

There is an old saying that there’s no knowing the gender of a child in gestation and when it will rain. Trying to find out the first is illegal in our country and rightly so considering the ever-rising numbers of female foeticide. But there is a lot at stake depending upon when and how much it will rain —when the livelihood of our 235 million farmers and the overall economy are heavily dependent upon the monsoons. Rains could wreak havoc, too, as it is doing in Assam right now (The death toll has hit 61 and 75,000 are homeless). The Indian Meteorological Department is infamous for never getting it right — whether to expect a drought or a flood. They had predicted that the monsoon would be bad last year: we got it in excess. It goes without saying how beneficial it would be for making the right preparations if we could foresee disasters — whether it’s a flood or drought. Now, finally and fortunately, we have woken up: A $75m (£48) mission is being launched to understand the south-west monsoon and forecast the rains more accurately using computer models. Better late than never.

The intrepid reporter Akhileshwari Ramagoud, former journalist and the current head of the Mass Communication department at Loyola Academy talks about where the subject stands in the city today they were living in those cities/countries. Deccan Herald was a pioneer in this regard as in many others. I have reported from almost every continent but reporting in India was always more challenging and so much more varied. The challenge of my five years in Washington was both professional and personal because I had left behind my two daughters in India. Did you ever have to wake up at 4 in the morning to chase a story? Oh yes! There were times when I worked right through the night like when we report results of elections. Considering the 12+ hour time difference between India and USA, there were days when I managed with barely a couple of hours of sleeping. As for getting up at 4 p m, the then chief minister N T Rama Rao was fond of having cabinet meetings and press conferences early in the morning. When I asked for an interview, he agreed to talk to me at 5 am! When I reached him, he not only was ready to take questions but even offered breakfast and coffee!

What inspired your choice of career? I guess I was always a rebel..I wanted to do something that was not ‘regular ‘. When as an undergraduate student in Nizam College in Hyderabad, I heard that a senior of mine was doing a Journalism course in Osmania University. I jumped at the idea and after finishing BA, I joined the one-year BJ course (Bachelor in Journalism). Interestingly there were only three girls in a class of 40. What do you have to say about the status of mass communication courses in the city? I am very happy that mass communication courses are very popular among the young which I believe is mainly due to the popularity of TV. It has become a much accepted career choice. For some of course it is a glamorous profession, considering the recognition and fame if your job is in front of a camera. Different colleges offer different quality of courses, but it is very crucial to have good infrastructure such as a studio for TV. A good faculty is also a must. Both these are in short supply in the

colleges that offer Mass Communication courses in the city.

Why do you think there is a lack of proper faculty for the subject? Any Mass Communication and Journalism course needs faculty that is experienced in the media. This is a skill-based course. Who can be a better teacher than a person who has worked in the profession? But we have very few people who have put in some years in the profession and who can or are willing to teach. This problem has been persisting since I was a student in the 1970s. Perhaps if the pay structure can be improved in the private colleges, more media professionals can be lured into teaching.

While most people of my generation dismiss youngsters as nonserious, immature or selfish, my experience with students who are around 18 or even less, is extremely encouraging. They just need some guidance, some encouragement and inspiration. I find my students very sensitive, positive and concerned about issues around them such as

poverty, deprivation, caste and gender discrimination. I get the most response from the class when I relate anecdotes to them! Is a proper academic mass com background a must for a journalist? Earlier we used to believe that journalists are born, not made. In fact, my seniors in the profession looked upon students of journalism courses with great skepticism. A common saying in the editiorial rooms then was that students of journalism had to unlearn everything they learned in college because they came to the profession with several misconceptions. While that has a grain of truth a strong academic background and knowledge of issues of national and international importance is of great help in getting started and in understanding the issues that we report. Tell us something about your experience as Foreign correspondent for Deccan Herald. It was absolutely awesome! I was perhaps the only woman then who was posted to Washington DC as foreign correspondent. Most of the foreign postings were given only to men or if there were women, then

What was it like to be a woman in a male dominated realm when you started? This question will take me hours to respond. I remember I was the only woman on the desk in Deccan Herald where I started my career. Later, when I moved to reporting, I would be the only reporter at a press conference. Fellow reporters would simply ignore me because they were not used to having a woman around. It took many years to be accepted and greeted by male colleagues. I recall an incident vividly, where this is obvious. After the foreign stint, I came back to Hyderabad as DH’s correspondent. A Doordarshan midranking reporter asked me what I issues I reported for DH. When I replied “politics” he burst out guffawing loudly! Apparently, he thought women couldn’t report politics. How much has changed since then? Sadly, not much. While there is some acceptance of women reporters and journalists, they continue to be second class citizens in the media as much as in the society. Women in top positions in the media are an exception not just in India but across the world. Glass ceiling is very much a part of our lives in the media.

The truth is he is just too used to getting his way. How do I instil discipline and enforce the fact that he cannot behave this way? A young child of four is usually testing limits and thus they will keep doing things they are not supposed to do. Kids at this age are able to do things more independently and are temperamental. They have not learned self-control yet, so parents have to teach them by setting appropriate boundaries and limits. A sign of testing limits is seen when a child is constantly asking for or doing something they should not be. As a parent, it’s come down to one thing — consistency. If you are not consistent in setting boundaries, then the child will keep pushing the limits. So all significant adults involved in the child’s life need to provide the same and consistent limit setting with the child. When your child throws a tantrum, you have to still stay consistent and not give them what they want. The tantrum is to get what they want; thus by giving it to them, all you have done is taught the child that throwing a tantrum will ensure they get what they want. If you consistently apply the right limits, the tantrums will cease, but remember that your tolerance has to be high as you might have to put up with 10-15 tantrums before there is a change. Explain to the child why he cannot have what he wants. Promote positive behaviour with rewards, show love and affection, stay detached from the situation when you get upset at them and use the opportunity to teach them the right way to behave. Women who stand for longer have small babies

ccording to a study from Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, pregnant women who stood for lengthy periods at work had babies whose heads were around half an inch smaller. According to Medical News Today, the study authors followed nearly 5,000 mothers during their pregnancies. About four in 10 of the women worked jobs that required them to stand for eight hours per day. Those women who stood for long hours had babies with smaller heads on average. “While previous studies have looked at how standing for long periods of time may affect birth weight and delay birth — this is the first study to look at the effects on foetal growth,” lead author of the study Alex Burdorf, reported BBC. “We were not surprised that head size was smaller in pregnant women who stand for a long time at work, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was only by a modest amount 3 per cent smaller than average at birth.” The differences in head size began to be apparent by the third trimester. According to WebMed, the study does not confirm that smaller head sizes mean anything about brain development. The study was published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

TRIVIA History of Volleyball On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts (USA), William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called Mintonette as a pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players. The game took some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. Another indoor sport, basketball, was catching on in the area, having been invented just ten miles away in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, only four years before. Mintonette was designed to be an indoor sport less rough than basketball for older members of the YMCA, while still requiring a bit of athletic effort. The first rules, written down by William G Morgan, called for a net 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) high, a 25×50 ft (7.6×15.2 m) court, and any number of players. A match was composed of nine innings with three serves for each team in each inning, and no limit to the number of ball contacts for each team before sending the ball to the opponents’ court.

In 1895, William G Morgan devised a game he called ‘mintonette’, which he intended as a gentle alternative to basketball for older members of his YMCA gym. A century later, Volleyball is anything but gentle – few sports on the Olympic programme offer such fast and exhileration action.

Field of play The volleyball court is 18m long and 9m wide. It is divided into two halves by a net that is 2.43m high for the men’s game, and 2.24m high for the women’s.
