Venting their anger, protesters on Monday burnt effigies of chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Telangana Rashtra Samithi Chief K Chandra Sekhar Rao, Lagadapati Rajagopal and many more. “First, the police gives us permission and then they lock us in. Despite not working on the same lines, students will support the political JAC. “This time it’s a people’s movement and students are on the forefront. Other so-called political leaders should stop lobbying in Delhi. We will not keep quiet; the momentum has started and until Telangana is not declared we will keep the fire on. any areas in the City continue to suffer from power cuts, following the CPDCL's decision to impose 4-hour power cuts as against the earlier three-hour power cut. The decision came after gas and coal supplies hit an all time low even as private DISCOMs have decided to hike power tariff rates. The load relief schedule was made public yesterday but power cuts remain frequent and random. Jubilee Hills for example reeled from a blackout for over 12 hours even as officials struggled to find out the cause of the power cut. Officials from the Jubilee Hills substation said, "We are trying to find out the cause and rectify it." Despite being a residential area of VIPs, the power services
are yet to be reinstated. Residents and local vendors say that this is a frequent problem and that despite the many timetables made public by the CPDCL, the load schedules remain random. "Officials say that there will be four hour power cuts but then this is not something new. Even when the three hour power cuts were imposed, we still suffered from four hour power cuts. The helpline at the substation is of no use as there is no reply, most of the times," says Ashok Reddy, a resident of Road number 65. Officials believe that this maybe because of redirecting the power supply lines from Jubilee Hills to the CoP-11 venue.

THINGS WE LEARNT TODAY
The column that teaches everyone something new about the way the City functions.
1
The T-protests get an online makeover. OU students used social networking sites and posted videos to spread the world online about the T-march. Protests have entered the e-age in India, it seems.
2
Working through the night might ruin your health. Working night shifts disrupts the body clock and has been linked to high blood pressure, cholestrol and diabetes. Stick to a 9-to-5 job instead, say experts.
3
India has to wake up and save its agricultural wealth. With the Green Revolution encouraging monoculture rice, thousands of crop species are on the verge of disappearing forever.
4
No relief from unscheduled power cuts in sight. Four-hour cuts notwithstanding, it doesn’t mean that unscheduled power cuts are a thing of the past.

esponding to the Postnoon report on October 1 about the mayor’s absence at the opening ceremony of CoP yesterday, mayor Mohd Majid Hussain said he would attend from Monday. “I shall be present along with the chief minister at MoP from October 8.” Seeking to downplay his absence, the mayor asked the media not to read too much into his absence. He said, “I shall be receiving the torch on behalf of the City in coming days.” He would be present for most sessions from the second week of the month till Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’ arrival in the concluding days of CoP. He said he was busy attending to mending the disturbed parts of the City after the Telangana protest. The mayor, along with the
GHMC commissioner, visited Tank Bund area on Monday to oversee the repairing and cleaning works on the stretch. He directed officials to clear the lake of all kinds of pollutants by starting dredging operations in coordination with HMDA officials. He also took note of the damages caused to the footpath and other recently repaired structures. During the inspection, he found that most bus shelters in the twin cities had little or poor amenities like sitting arrangements. Even the place where route maps should be displayed was being utilised for advertisements, which was ‘highly objectionable’. He directed the zonal commissioner to call for a meeting with the agencies concerned. Speaking to Postnoon, he revealed that all the fountains, which add beauty to the Hussain Sagar lake, were also restored and they would be
functional from Wednesday. “We are doing our bit, but it is also the denizen’s responsibility to maintain this. What is disturbing is the fact that portions of the footpath, which were recently painted by the
Corporation, are now awash with pan stains,” he lamented. He said citizens too have a responsibility to ensure that the City is kept clean, especially when the world has assembled in our foyer.

‘Exempt AP from NEET-2013’ Important concerns have to be addressed to ensure the smooth transition of the State’s students into the national entrance test, says the chief minister in a letter to the Central government.
C
hief Minister N Kiran Kumar on Monday wrote to the Centre, asking that AP be exempted from NEET-2013. In a letter to Union minister for health and family welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad, the CM said that in the best interest of the students of the State, an order exempting AP from the proposed NEET-2013 should be issued. The letter states: “You are aware that in my earlier letter regarding NEET-2012, I have brought to your notice certain concerns to be addressed in the interest of smooth transition of
the students of our State to the single entrance test. Firstly, introduction of NEET would involve certain amendments to the AP Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admissions and Prohibition of
Capitation Fee) Act, 1983, and also the Dr NTR University of Health Sciences Act, 1986, under which the State’s Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) is held. The EAMCET ranking is based on 25% marks secured in
Intermediate examination and 75% marks secured in EAMCET. The students who have joined Intermediate in 2011-12 are eligible for 25% weightage for the marks secured in the board exam. The NEET syllabus is based on the CBSE curriculum. AP has adopted CBSE curriculum w.e.f. the academic year 2012-13. It would be appropriate for these students to appear for the NEET in 2014 as they would have studied Intermediate as per the revised curriculum and would not be eligible for weightage for Intermediate marks.” NSS

fter the success of the Telangana March, the onus of keeping it alive has shifted on to Telangana Congress leaders, especially the ministers and MPs. The Telangana ministers and MPs have decided to mount pressure on the party high command to achieve the separate state as was demanded by the Telangana Joint Action Committee. The chairman of this umbrella organisation of various pro-Telangana groups Kodandaram had demanded that the T-ministers should immediately take steps to ensure a favourable statement on creation of separate Telangana from their party high command. These ministers are now seriously thinking to go to Delhi and mount pressure on the party high command. A final decision on the issue will be taken in the next couple of days. Deputy chief minister and minister for panchayat raj K Jana Reddy is
leading this movement. The Telangana ministers think that it is the right time for them to spread the message that they are also for a separate Telangana state. “We played a crucial role in the success of the Telangana March. Had we not taken steps to get the permission for the massive march, it would not have possible for the T-JAC to organise it,” minister for backward classes welfare B Saraiah told Postnoon.

ter E Peddi Reddy. “It would be helpful for us to launch the yatra from Anantapur district. If we begin the yatra from this place, we can cover 16 districts at a go without any breaks in 117 days. The yatra, which would begin from Anantapur, would cover two Rayalaseema, eight Telangana and six coastal Andhra districts,” Reddy said. It’s in fact a pocket-borough of the NTR family.
‘V

It will last 117 days. This would probably set a world record for the longest political trek. The whole party and its various wings are engaged in prayers for the grand success of the party chief. The students’ wing offered 108 coconuts to Lord Balaji, while the Mahila wing offered special prayers. Why Anantapur every time he undertakes a yatra? Therein hangs a tale of belief and omens. It was at Hindupur that his father-in-law and father of TDP, NTR, won the seat three times. People here have a special place in their hearts for the late NTR. “Our party founder NTR liked Hindupur very much. He scored a hat-trick from this constituency as MLA. The present presi-

It is considered auspicious to begin a good project from this direction. All this apart, Hindupur played a crucial role in restoring democratic government after the 1985 rebellion by the then party leader N Bhaskar Rao. Around 15 party workers sacrificed their lives demanding restoration of the NTR-led government. This had acted as an eyeopener for many and led to a Statewide agitation then,” Reddy recalled.

US gets vocal
I
n a plenary session on the first day of MoP, which was attended by delegates from all over the world, the United States (a non-party member) stood out for making a vocal statement in defence of modern bio-technology. A representative from the country asserted that while US is not a party to the Cartagena Protocol, it supports the Protocol and recognises it as a positive step towards achieving bio-safety. It maintained however that Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) have contributed significantly towards the growth of agriculture and trade in the US ensuring food security, and therefore that the Protocol be implemented in a manner that’s least trade restrictive. It further stated that the US’ vast experience of using bio-technology, LMOs, like genetically modified crops for instance, have proven to be only greatly productive while there have no proven cases of their threat to biodiversity.

S
low progress in signing and ratification of the Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was a major topic of discussion at Day One of the MoP. Only 54 countries have signed so far and three countries have ratified the Protocol. Lack of resources, capacity-building, infrastructure for risk awareness, budgetary constraints and other socio-economic factors in developing countries are the challenges, said Charles Gbedemah, head of Biosafety. In response, the secretariat announced the establishment of two working groups to deal with the challenge. One that will work with issues relating to compliance, while the second will work towards risk assessment.

fter a productive opening day at the CoPMoP yesterday, delegates at the conference are getting down to business on Day Two. Primary on the agenda today are the discussions on the two working groups on matters which will help towards building a consensus on the Nagoya-Kuala Lampur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress. The Protocol is considered a step towards achieving bio-safety by making countries liable for damage resulting from Living Modified Organisms (LMOs). But so far only 51 of the 164 countries (including India) have signed while only three countries have ratified the Protocol. In two sessions, one working group will deliberate on matters
of unintentional transboundary movements of Living Modified Organisms and socio-economic barriers in developing countries, the other working group will have a first round of discussions on risk assessment. Head of Bio-safety Charles Gbedemah, representing the
CBD secretariat stated that the meetings held so far have been encouraging. “There is always scope for debate and discussion in matters of such magnitude. But so far so good. While there are divergent views, we see them heading towards a consensus.” Compared to the CoP-MoP held
in Nagoya, he stated that the current one seemed to be far more harmonious. Apart from the working groups, a number of side events are to take place in the afternoon session today. At the heart of the programmes are topics such as bio-safety and accountability, effective regulation of Genetically Modified Organisms in South Africa, sustainable farming, food security and biotechonology and closer home, a discussion of farmer experiences on the use of biotech products. Another interesting event of the day was a panel session ‘No shortcut to biodiversity’, was held by environmentalists from the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, Dr GV Ramanjaneyulu, Veena Rao and convenor of coalition for GM Free India Sridhar Radhakrishnan, spoke on the hazards of genetically modified crops.

They sought that GMO/LMOs are not released into the environment. Their appeal came in the backdrop of growing evidence on the impacts of GE crops on bio-diversity and human health. Speaking at the press conference, Sridhar Radhakrishnan, the convenor, coalition for GM-Free India, said that the resistance to GM crops is growing across the world and it is best reflected in countries like India and China where governments have started

India was self-sufficient. But with changings times, agricultural systems witnessed significant distortions leading to a monoculture trap. Dr GV RAMANJANEYULU and VEENA V RAO feedback@postnoon.com
O
n the occasion of Convention of Biodiversity (CBD) Centre for Sustainable Agriculture has carried out a study titled “Modern Agriculture and Erosion of Agrobiodiversity” which analyses how agro-biodiversity was eroded in the name of modernising agriculture, drawing experiences largely from two case studies ie, paddy and cotton. The study aimed to come up with a larger framework for people and government to adopt and move forward making agriculture sound ecologically and economically sustainable. Part I of the study synthesises and reviews history of agriculture production in India through the period of green revolution and post green revolution. It draws lessons for India from green revolution, which had brought food self-sufficiency and also provides insights into historical agricultural production systems in late 1700s period. The report capture genesis of green revolution and its impact on agro-biodiversity; loss of genetic diversity and concludes that Indian agriculture production in historical times was self-sufficient and with changing times agricultural systems witnessed significant distortions in land use pattern, irrigation and introduction of cash crops. India which is one of the mega biodiversity centres in the world has fallen into the monoculture trap. Only paddy and wheat was promoted. Indian agriculture was always technology driven. Instead of

In fact, the train is now called Science Express: Biodiversity Special (SEBS), and features a state-of-theart exhibition that aims to raise awareness on the vast biodiversity of the country and related environmental issues such as climate change, global warming, water and energy conservation and more. The train which started its journey in June has already covered over 25 stations (of the 52) and will arrive in the City, at the Secunderabad Station, on October 9, 2012. It’s already received over 1.2 million visitors, and is reportedly a hugely hit among children.

But green revolution has monocultured rice. evolving technologies based on our conditions, they were displaced by the green revolution technologies which played havoc with the environment and livelihoods of farmers in the country which has taken a toll on farmers. Part II of the study, draws lessons from case studies of paddy and cotton from India, as how modern agriculture technology driven agenda drove the
nation towards greater risks of long term food shortages in the country and emergence of new issues and concerns. Cotton cultivation and use in India dates back to Indus Valley Civilisation. Things have changed with introduction of American cottons to suit the spinning mills. The American cottons brought in their own set of ecological problems including the most dreaded American bollworm and then chemical pesticides to control it. With pest resistance built up, newer pesticides were brought in and today the entire nation suffers from huge pesticide poisoning. The genetically modified Bt cotton which was brought in 2002 as a solace caused more damage. Similarly, India is the centre of

origin and centre of rich diversity of rice. Estimations show that India had about two lakh rice varieties and about 50,000 of them under cultivation by independence time. Green revolution has not only monocultured rice, but also the way it is grown. Today we get 85 per cent of our rice from about 10 varieties and 95 per cent of it grown in water stagnated conditions. This has led to serious environmental problems. Ignoring the fact that India is the centre for diversity for rice and has large trade interests in being non-GM, government and industry are pushing GM rice in the country. The lessons from Bt Cotton are never learnt. The writers work at Centre for Sustainable Agriculture.

business can only sustain and grow if it is adaptable to change. When the world is going green, Sonali Srikanth doesn’t want to sell only artificial plants at her shop. Her business, Forget Me not Florist, also started selling natural plants, flowers and providing other services like landscaping and walls. Today, 30-40 per cent of the revenues come from natural products and services. Sonali says, “I did commerce in my graduation. I am a plant lover and chose this business idea when I had a three-monthold daughter. It was in 1996 and I took `25,000 from my husband to source these plants. The idea did not burden me too much and allowed to do something of interest. Although, these are artificial plants, there is an art involved in creating them. I used to get stems, flowers separately and work on them to create different plants with flowers. A friend of mine has similar business in Mumbai and her inputs helped.” For any small-scale business, marketing is crucial and she

The value addition we create to customers is by giving necessary inputs and services in choosing the plants by

This helped the business to spread across different verticals like natural plants, flower bouquets, landscaping, interior natural plant services and decorating for marriages. “We realised artificial plants is not the way to go forward. The companies are going green and looking for certifications like ISO, for which having natural plants are very important. It is also important to understand what our clients are looking for and tune the business accordingly. The business got operational breakeven in first eight months. The revenues of the business are growing at around 15 per cent for last four years and also started an online store by which people can gift flowers for their loved ones on any occasion. It also had plans to increase its retail base to 12 shops in a year with shop-in-shop format.

Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest on Tuesday won a High Court appeal against a ruling that he misled investors on Chinese deals that could have seen him banned as a company director. The billionaire founder of iron ore giant Fortescue Metals Group was also facing a multi-million-dollar fine after the Federal Court ruled last year that he misled the market on a project in 2004. Forrest told investors Fortescue had secured “binding” agreements with three state-owned Chinese contractors to build a mine, railway and port in Western Australia’s Pilbara region when only framework documents had been signed.

Romney looks forward to Obama date
DENVER: Mitt Romney and his Republican allies assailed President Barack Obama's foreign policy on Monday, expanding their attacks beyond his economic record in the run-up to the first of three debates. Romney arrived in the battleground state of Colorado two full days before the high-stakes face-off Wednesday, telling supporters "I look forward" to the presidential debates as a chance to lay out a grand vision for the country. During a boisterous rally here late Monday Romney largely kept to his standard stump speech laying out how his policies would break the US economy out of its rut and create 12 million jobs. But earlier in the day Romney had cast beyond US borders, suggesting that after weeks of turmoil sparked by an antiIslam Internet video foreign affairs might get more attention in the final sprint to the November 6 vote. He accused Obama of downplaying deadly violence in the Middle East and warned that the president's policies have "heightened the prospect of conflict and instability." Obama "does not understand that an American policy that lacks resolve can provoke aggression and encourage disorder," Romney wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. "We're not moving (events in the Middle East) in a direction that protects our people or our allies. And that's dangerous." Romney is spending the next two days in Colorado undergoing final debate preparations, while Obama is hunkered down in Nevada as he strategizes and dusts off his debate skills. AFP

GALAXY BAN LIFTED A judge on Monday lifted a ban on US sales of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computers as legal brawling continued between the South Korean electronics titan and Apple. US District Court Judge Lucy Koh issued an order clearing the way for Samsung to renew sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets that were halted while it dueled with Apple in a high-stakes patent trial. A jury declared on August 24 that Samsung should pay Apple $1.049 billion in damages for illegally copying iPhone and iPad features, in one of the biggest patent cases in decades — a verdict that could have huge market repercussions.

Golf and the great game THE HUMAN CONDITION Dean Williams
T
here is no force more unifying than sport. There is no sunrise or sunset that can uplift the spirit like a curling free-kick, or a well-struck tee shot. Sport epitomises the human spirit in as much as it is the personification of triumph over pain and suffering. On Sunday night at the Ryder Cup all these elements waltzed together in the graceful steps that make up golf. To many, golf may be a great way to spoil a good walk, but to those who play and follow the sport, it kicks cricket’s and football’s ass every day of the week. Watching Team Europe climb out of the hole they had dug for themselves and rally under the watchful eye of the late Seve Ballesteros, to defeat the Americans in the waning light of a late Chicago evening at the Medinah golf course, was a sight to behold. The golf was great, hell, it was spectacular. But more than that it was the coming together of individuals who almost all of the time are left to their own devices on the vast acreage of a golf course. It was unity at its finest. Even the partisan American crowd had to eventually suck it up and admit they were watching history in the making as the Europeans charged like a light brigade with clubs instead of cutlasses. There was no repeat of Brookline, rather what threatened to be another rabid showing by golf fans turned out to be a masterclass of appreciation. Golf may have won on Sunday, but so did sport, and swimming in that essence so did every fan around the world.
HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS
Oh dear! More worrying news about the effects of global warming. A BBC report says the warmer ocean water will cause reduced oxygen levels in it and the fallout will be the shrinking of fish species in size. As it is, there’s less of it, in a little while, it would get smaller. Shrinking fish... shrinking brain?

LESSONS FROM THE CoP DEEPAK DESHPANDE

W
hy is the success rate of massive global meetings like the ongoing CoP of biodiversity abysmally low? There are many reasons but the main one is the official superciliousness that tabs the issue a high-brow status, leaving the real stakeholders — common people — away. Take for instance the CoP in Hyderabad. A year and half ago the city was allotted to host the event. The State, the Centre, the City administrations had a golden chance to use the occasion to make people aware of the need to have biological diversity. All things on earth are finite and all creatures live by this rule, except the technological man. Mindless exploitation of the flora and fauna, therefore, leads to imbalance and that ultimately affects the human race. What all we saw was an advertisement gimmick. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy was portrayed welcoming the delegates to “Hyderabad, the city of biodiversity”. I have often wondered, what if a keen observer among the delegates asked the Chief Minister, what happened to crows and vultures. The CM may look puzzled. The government, be it Centre, or State, or local, played a Rip-Van-Winkle. No efforts were made to inculcate the need
to preserve the urban flora and fauna. Why, even a few days before the CoP, a massive banyan tree was axed in the City for the atrocious reason that the tree was sucking bore well water! Need we a better example of the environmental apathy of citizens? This apart, the occasion could also be used to infuse in citizens civic sense. Everybody agrees that civic sense is woefully lacking in Hyderabad. The HMDA painting flyovers over and over to cover up the “bloody” stains of pan spit
explains why the British used to call us “Dirty Indians!”. No effort was made by the educational institutions and NGOs either despite both in the best of positions to do the maximum in this regard. The lack of governmental initiative and the lackadaisical attitude of educationists left out the event from their agenda. How nice would it have been if schools and NGOs organised quiz and other efforts on biodiversity to enthuse the future generation! To my mind the only public
entity that did something was the Nehru Zoological Park (Hyderabad zoo). They made special vehicles portraying biological diversity and wildlife and launched many programmes besides deciding to make entry free for children up to 14 years during the 19-day CoP. Biological diversity is too important an issue to be left to pundits. It is a matter of survival of man, and each one of us has to understand that we depend on each other — every form of life. Awareness is the key. If there is awareness that the loss of a tree is a tragedy, things will change. Today, the rich but illiterate people building homes or offices on either side of arterial roads axe a 100year-old tree without compunction because it “blocks the view”! Could it get any worse? Belated though, the civic administration must capture this historical moment when the City is hosting a world conference on biodiversity, to launch a mass awareness programme that will tell in the simplest of terms: reduce pollution and preserve the flora and fauna. The alternative is doom.

lesser man at 78 would have been done for if he were to be assaulted by four men. But this is Lt Gen KS Brar. He miraculously survived the assault by four men in central London on Sunday night. With abnormal strength, he recalled, he “kicked and boxed and warded” them off. He has been receiving death threats for a long time now for his role in “Operation Blue Star”. The person who ordered the operation was assassinated a few months later. The thing we must not forget is Lt Gen KS Brar was merely a man who was told to do a job which he did. He was merely following orders. That’s what soldiers do... with absolute conviction that it is in the service of their country. That’s what gives them courage, that’s what gives them strength. But hunting them down to wreak vengeance over something in which they had no personal interest is not fair.

t last some action. Despite incessant rains and thunderstorm, the City authorities and voluntary organisations are trying their best to present the best face of Hyderabad to the inland and overseas delegates attending CoP. The efforts of a host of voluntary organisaions like Rotary, I Go Green, ITMD to clean the Durgam Cheruvu Lake today was a commendable job. It’s now the turn of the citizens to chip in with a bit of civic sense; to mind not to dirty the city walls and surroundings which the Mayor bemoaned of. As the saying goes, charity begins at home, and probably ends at home.

Jobs vs Careers

KNOW YOUR COMPANY
Youngsters, when faced with the slightest difficulty, are not thinking twice before jumping ship and shifting jobs. When does this become career suicide? AMY ROSE THOMAS amyrose.t@postnoon.com
L
ong gone are the days when college graduates joined a company and stuck to the same organisation till retirement. Youngsters jumping ship has been a commonplace event for some time now. Today, the youth is going a step further and instead of jumping jobs they have started to jump careers. So we have many with degrees in engineering trying their hand in photography and those with management degrees working with newspapers and so on. Does following your dream or passion help you in the longer run or is it just career suicide? Where should one draw the line? Sunny M, an HR trainee, feels that the toughest part about shifting
careers is convincing recruiters since this will make you appear as flaky and drifty. “It is possible that you didn’t make the right decision as a teenager when you decided to take a particular degree. But recruiters very often fail to see this possibility and in my opinion shifting careers is still frowned upon. I was a management graduate and after college I had worked in the field for a few years before I decided that this is not my cup of tea and planned to shift my career. I wanted to work with a public relations company since I knew I am cut out for that job. But, I had a very tough time during interviews when the recruiters came to know of my management history. They pestered me with questions on why I wanted to shift and they were not convinced about my answers. At the end, I
am back to working as a HR for now. I am still looking out for openings in the public relations’ sector,” he says. Constructive job-hopping takes thought and planning to achieve the goals of moving forward and strengthening a career. If done badly then the consequences are bound to be serious. “Shifting careers when you are in your 20s has become a norm among youngsters and they have no qualms in taking the required risks and jumping ship. But, this definitely is a wrong career move as one will have to start from scratch on such occasions as the recruiters would not take your experience in your previous company into account while hiring you. This is more severe when you are in your 30s as you have more responsibilities on your shoulders and lives depending on you,” HR professional Rekha Dutt says. However, some feel that recruiters
are more open as compared to how they were in the past and they do not trash your resume when they find three of four jobs on it. However, too many jobs on your resume can give you a tag of a hopper which could work against you while pursuing the job of your dreams. Bear in mind the long term goals rather than your short term desires before shifting your careers as it can have a disastrous effect on your life since you will have to start from the beginning and chances of moving up the ladder are unlikely.

hat initially appeared to be a slight inflammation slowly progressed to become a lump on the palm. A worried Reena contacted her doctor who diagnosed it as a mild case of Dupuytren’s contracture. D u p u y t re n ’ s c o n t r a c t u re refers to a progressive condition in which there is a thickening and contracture of the tissues under the skin. According to Dr KJ Reddy,
senior consultant orthopaedist, Apollo Hospital, “It refers to a condition in which there is a contracture of the fascia on the palm. The fascia is the tissue which holds the tendons. It generally begins with the ring finger and then spreads to the other fingers. It is generally a painless condition that progresses over time.”
Etymology
C
ontracture refers to the unusual shortening of the muscle tissue while Dupuytren refers to the French surgeon Guillame Dupuynter. He is credited as being the first to operate on this type of hand deformity as early as the 1800s.
SYMPTOMS Dupuytren’s Contracture is seen as a lump or nodule on the finger. The palmar fascia within the hand becomes abnormally thick, which can cause the fingers to curl and can result in impaired function of the fingers. In severe cases, it may make it difficult in to stretch or move the finger/s.

In mild cases, it is not seen to impair one’s day to day activities.

This is available in pharmacies.
it is seen to run in families. It may also be related to vascular disorders and has been seen in people suffering from liver conditions such as sclerosis.”
TREATMENT In the beginning, Dupuytren’s Contracture is painless and requires no treatment. It is only as it becomes severe that treatment may be suggested. Treatment is usually done for the symptoms and not the ailment as such. Dr Reddy says, “Dupuytren’s Contracture is a progressive disorder. Surgery is advised only once the ailment has matured (it stabilises).“ One can make out whether it is matured or not as
initially that part may appear tender. Recurrence rates of the contracture even after treatment are said to be high.
PREVALENCE “Dupuytren’s contracture is not very common in India. We may see one or two such cases in a year. It is more commonly seen in people of European origin. It generally occurs in middle-aged people,” says Dr Reddy. The condition is common among Caucasians and, according to statistics, affects a sizeable section of the British population every year. Men are more likely to suffer although it may occur in women also.

RESEARCH
CANCER
‘Fearful memories can be erased from the brain’ The finding may herald a new path in treating phobias and post-traumatic stress disorders based on negative experiences in life.
R
esearchers at Uppsala University found that emotional memories that involved things like fear or stress can be permanently erased from the brain. The research may herald a new path in treating phobias and posttraumatic stress disorders based on negative experiences earlier in life. “Ultimately the new findings may lead to improved treatment methods for the millions of people in the world who suffer from anxiety issues like phobias, posttraumatic stress, and panic attacks,” said study author Thomas Agren, according to Red Orbit. Long-term memory is created through the formation of proteins in the brain, said PTI, and is constantly reaffirmed by bringing the memory to mind in a kind of lengthy consolidation process. When remembering things, we don’t remember the original but rather our memory of the memory. The study worked to disrupt this consolidation process. Researchers showed volunteers a neutral picture while immediately giving them an electrical shock, which made the picture eventually elicit fear. The scientists worked to block this fearful memory by then continually showing the picture without the shock to one group but continued the shocks with the other group, albeit with a short delay in between to let consolidation occur, reported PsychCentral. Using a skin conductance test, the researchers could gauge who felt fear. The first group eventually lost their fear of the picture, while the second group continued to show fear. This means that getting rid of bad memories can only be done immediately after that memory occurs.
Yet, there is hope this process can be accomplished for memories that go farther back. “These findings may be a breakthrough in research on memory and fear,” said Agren, reported Red Orbit. The study was published in the journal Science. IANS

‘Aphasia awareness low’
TORONTO: Only two of 100 people are aware of aphasia - a condition characterised either by partial or total loss of speech or the capacity to write, a Canadian study says. Aphasia occurs when there is stroke damage to language and communication centres in the brain. It does not affect intelligence but can leave people
unable to express themselves. Thirty community volunteers trained by the YorkDurham Aphasia Centre, a March of Dimes Canada programme, collaborated with researchers from two Ontario universities in a survey of 832 adults in southern Ontario. They found that only two per cent of respondents could
correctly identify aphasia as a communication disorder, according to a statement. “Aphasia is poorly understood,” says neurologist Michael Hill, co-chairman of the Canadian Stroke Congress. “The sudden loss of language creates huge challenges.” As many as 100,000 Canadians are living with chronic aphasia. Smoking linked with pancreatic cancer WASHINGTON: Those who smoke and drink heavily may develop pancreatic cancer at an earlier age than those who don’t, according to a new US study. Researchers from the University of Michigan Health System found that heavy smokers with pancreatic cancer were diagnosed around 62 years and heavy drinkers at age 61 - almost a decade earlier than the average age of 72. Smoking is a strong risk factor for pancreatic cancer and alcohol has been shown to cause oxidative damage to the pancreas, which sets the stage for the inflammatory pathways that can lead to cancer, the American Journal of Gastroenterology reports. The finding is based on study of 811 pancreatic cancer patients only indicate these habits can lead to developing pancreatic cancer earlier in life. The study does make a step toward understanding at what age screening for pancreatic cancer should begin — once widespread screening is available. “As screening programmes are developed, an understanding of how personal features influence the age of presentation will be important to optimize the timing of those screenings,” says gastroenterologist Michelle Anderson, assistant professor of internal medicine at Michigan. Detecting pancreatic cancer early is difficult and contributes to the poor survival rates. By the time pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, it is frequently at an advanced stage . Currently there are no tests available to easily find it in people who do not have symptoms. In the study, heavy smokers were defined as those who had more than a pack per day, and heavy drinking was measured at more than 39 grams a day. IANS

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

REASON TO CELEBRATE
CINE BYTES
K
aty Perry is reportedly planning to mark what would have been her second wedding anniversary by holding a divorce party. The Wide Awake singer, who married comedian Russell Brand on October 23, 2010, is said to be dreading the date this year following the couple’s separation after 14 months of marriage. Perry is keen to “turn it into something positive”, according to The Sun, and has decided to host a celebration of the people in her life. “Katy has been dreading October 23 for weeks now, and has been trying to think of ways to turn it into something positive,” an insider said. “It’s her birthday two days later and the last thing she wanted to do was spend that week depressed and miserable, which would then mean not doing anything to celebrate her birthday. “Her pals have been persuading her to have a huge party or go to Vegas for a few days, but Katy decided on throwing a small gathering at her home. “She has decided to call it her ‘divorce party’, and it will be a day of doing what she loves with her favourite people.” Since splitting in December 2011, Brand has been linked to a number of women, including Geri Halliwell, while Perry is rumoured to be in an on-off relationship with John Mayer.

Ryder Cup hero Lee to miss Dunhill tournament
Westwood won the Dunhill event in 2003 but has decided to pull out this time to recover after his efforts for Europe, who came from 10-6 down to retain the Ryder Cup with an epic fightback. GLASGOW: European Ryder Cup hero Lee Westwood on Monday withdrew from this week’s Dunhill Links Championship which is to be held in Scotland. Westwood won the Dunhill event in 2003 but has decided to pull out this time to recover after his efforts for Europe, who came from 10-6 down to retain the Ryder Cup with an epic fightback in the singles on Sunday. Westwood’s withdrawal leaves only three members of the European side in the Dunhill field. The three Europeans are Paul Lawrie, Peter Hanson and Martin Kaymer, who holed the putt that guaranteed Jose Maria Olazabal’s men would retain the trophy, plus Dustin Johnson from the beaten American line-up. aroline Wozniacki beamed with pride at her golfer boyfriend Rory McIlroy’s heroic exploits at the Ryder Cup, and joked that she wasn’t to blame for him almost missing a tee time. The tennis star said McIlroy, the world number one, did particularly well despite his mix-up as the European team came back from 10-6 down going into the final day to defeat US 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. “It was great considering his very late arrival yesterday, almost missing his tee time. I thought it was very well for him to be able to stay head-cool and go out there and play so well,” she said. McIlroy came within a few minutes of committing one of the biggest golfing blunders when he mistook which time zone he was in. He was quietly getting ready to leave his hotel when he was informed that his tee-off time in his closing singles match was in just 25 minutes.
FORMULA ONE
Thailand in race to host
Thailand’s tourism and sports minister on Monday told that he was confident the country would host its first Formula One race in 2014, with talks already at an advanced stage. BANGKOK: Thailand’s tourism and sports minister on Monday told AFP he was confident the country would host its first Formula One race in 2014, with talks already at an advanced stage. “It’s unlikely we’ll have any problem,” Chumpol Silpa-archa said, adding that negotiations with Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, were more than halfway through. But he said the country was still looking for a suitable venue as an existing track in the seaside resort of Pattaya, about an hour’s drive from the capital Bangkok, is “not perfect”. “We will discuss the possibilities and will know more in the next few weeks,” Chumpol said. According to the Bangkok Post English-language daily, the race is likely to be held at night as in Singapore, where Thai officials met Formula One supremo
Bernie Ecclestone late last month. The move would mark a new milestone in F1’s drive into Asia, where Singapore,
Malaysia, China, South Korea, Japan and India will all host races next year according to the FIA schedule announced on Friday.
Sauber interested in signing Schumacher
BERLIN: Sauber chief executive Monisha Kaltenborn said Monday the Swiss outfit were interested in signing German Michael Schumacher when his contract with Mercedes expires in 2013.
Schumacher, 43, is reportedly still undecided about his future after learning that he will be replaced by Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. “Of course it’s nice to think of such a possibility, that we can ask ourselves if we can get a seven-time world champion when he is on the market,” Kaltenborn told the sportsdaily Bild, adding: “Michael has until now been with just big stables which we can’t compare ourselves to”. Team principal Peter Sauber has already said that he would “immediately” sign Schumacher if he were available. AFP
Singapore last month extended its grand prix for another five years until 2017 after lengthy haggling for cheaper fees. Singapore held the sport’s first night race in 2008, an event that has become a highlight of the season. High costs have caused friction for several hosts of Formula One, which has expanded aggressively from its traditional European domain. Mark Webber was greeted by an estimated crowd of more than 100,000 people when he raced a show car through the streets of Bangkok in December 2010 as part of birthday celebrations for the Thai king. Webber’s team is owned by and named after Red Bull, manufacturer of the popular energy drink that originated in Thailand. The outfit has won Formula One’s last two drivers’ and constructors’ championships, in 2010 and 2011. AFP
Aus Open offers record prize money
MELBOURNE: The 2013 Australian Open will offer a record Aus$30 million in prize money, as organisers respond to threats of a boycott from players agitating for a greater share of revenue. Tennis Australia chief executive Steve Wood said the Aus$4 million hike from the last tournament was the single biggest increase in the history of the opening Grand Slam of the season. “We are proud to announce this major increase in prize money,” he said. “We have led the world in prize money for these incredible athletes and we want to ensure that the Australian Open continues to make a major contribution to the financial wellbeing of professional tennis players.” AFP
Murray a contender at every GS BEIJING: World number two Novak Djokovic said on Monday his conqueror in the US Open final this year Andy Murray has the “quality” to be a contender at every Grand Slam the Scotsman plays in.Murray’s 7-6 (12/10), 75, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 victory over the Serbian was his first Gra going to be, in the future, one of the contenders to win every Grand Slam he plays in. “He definitely has the skill, the quality,” added the five-time Grand Slam winner who is looking to extend his unbeaten record. Djokovic has won the event on the two occasions he has entered it, in 2009 and 2010, but missed last year because of injury. AFP
FC Dynamo Kyiv win Subroto Cup
NEW DELHI: MSP Malappuram, Kerala became the first team to score a goal against Ukraine's FC Dynamo Kyiv but that was not enough for the Indian team to stop the visitors from winning the final 5-2 and lift the boy's U-17 Subroto Cup crown here on Monday. The Ukraine outfit was the outright favourite for the title given the clinical display en route to the final, but the Kerala team was determined not to go down without a fight in front of a vociferous crowd that had gathered to support them. The defeat leaves Pakistan with a must-win last match against in-form Australia on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals, and ex-players questioned captain Mohammad Hafeez’s decision to bat first after winning the toss. “Pakistan should have realised that India’s strong point is their batting and they can chase a big total, so why did they bat first?” said former captain Aamir Sohail. “Our eleven was not chosen with India in mind.” India rolled Pakistan for a meagre 128 in 19.4 overs before Virat Kohli smashed a brilliant unbeaten 61-ball 78 to steer his side home in 17 overs, avoiding an early Super Eights exit. Zaheer Abbas said Pakistan went into the game against their rivals under prepared. “It seemed there was no planning for the crucial match,” said Abbas. “You need to do proper planning for a mat-ch against India but I saw that the team panicked and there was no plan to stop Kohli.

Olympiakos warned Spanish midfielder Arteta says Arsenal will come back strongly after their defeat to Chelsea on Saturday. STEVE GRIFFITHS Agencie France-Presse LONDON: Mikel Arteta has warned Olympiakos that Arsenal will take out their frustrations on the Greek team in Wednesday’s Champions League clash at the Emirates Stadium. Arsene Wenger’s side suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday as Chelsea punished some slack defending from the hosts to clinch a 2-1 victory and Arteta admits his team-mates are desperate to make amends against Olympiakos. After winning in Montpellier in the opening group fixture, a victory over Olympiakos would put the Gunners firmly on course for the last 16 and Arteta said: “We have played some of the best teams in the league and we haven’t been battered at all. “In fact it has been the opposite, we have been better than them through the 90 minutes. I think that is a very positive thing. “We will bounce back on Wednesday in the Champions League against Olympiakos.” The main concern for Arsenal in recent weeks has been their weakness when dealing with set-pieces from the opposition.

Manchester City’s goal in their draw against the Gunners came from a corner, while Chelsea took full advantage of Arsenal’s defensive frailties to score twice from Juan Mata free-kicks. Arteta insists individuals should not be blamed for the goals and he called on his team to take collective responsibility for fixing the problem. “We have conceded three goals from three set-pieces in the last two games that cost us points and it is not good enough,” Arteta said. “I don’t think it is something to do with the defence, it is to do with a set-up in the game, which is a freekick or a corner or whatever, and we haven’t defended the ball well enough and we conceded three goals in those two games. “You cannot blame one player, you have to clear the lines so quickly and you cannot allow runners like that in the box, and it was the same sort of ball for both goals. “It is frustrating, but I think it was our own fault because we didn’t defend those set-pieces.” Wenger agrees that Arsenal must tighten up at the back, but he put the poor defending down to a bad day at the office rather than an overall trend that needs addressing.
Coaches look to maintain impetus Two-time winning coaches Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti will be looking to guide Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain to victory. PIRATE IRWIN Agencie France-Presse PARIS: Coaches Jose Mourinho (right) and Carlo Ancelotti (far right) will look forward to Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain getting thier second successive victories in the group stages on Wednesday. Both Mourinho and then Ancelotti failed to deliver European club football’s premier trophy with Chelsea — galling for both that the relative novice Roberto di Matteo succeeded where they failed. The pressure is very much on both men this time round as Mourinho, who has won with Porto and Inter Milan, has yet to deliver the trophy to Real — they have gone out in the semi-finals in the past two seasons. Ancelotti, twice a winner with AC Milan, might be in his first
Champions League campaign with the French side but their Qatari backers will be expecting a long run in the competition after laying out millions of euros on players. Both have tricky away trips Real to Dutch giants Ajax and PSG to Porto. While Real grabbed a late but deserved 3-2 victory at home to Manchester City in the first game,
Ajax fell to a late goal away at Borussia Dortmund. Since the victory over City Real have looked a different side to the one that had fallen eight points behind bitter rivals Barcelona in La Liga, and while the gap remains the same the ‘meringues’ have won both their subsequent league games, thrashing Deportivo La Coruna 5-1 on Sunday.
Feuding Zenit host Milan after internal woes Dispute in the Russian club over spending big money on new players is been felt on the pitch. MARINA KORENEVA Agencie France-Presse SAINT PETERSBURG: Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg go into their Champions League clash with Italy’s giants AC Milan shadowed by a bitter internal feud and a lack of domestic league wins that has tarnished their early season. The multinational Russian side this weekend dropped two home points in a 1-1 draw with visitors Lokomotiv Moscow ahead of their Group C clash on Wednesday in Saint Petersburg. Zenit have been driven by feuding after their big money signings of Brazilian star Hulk (above) and Belgian Alex
Witsel, the pair reportedly costing the club around 100 million euros. The moves sparked a revolt by some lesser-paid Russian stars. Zenit are seventh in the table with 18 points from 10 matches, five behind leaders Anzhi Makhachkala. Zenit’s star players Alexander Kerzhakov and Igor Denisov, who rebelled over the $6.5 million annual salary being earned by Hulk, demanded a pay rise, which led to their demotion from the first team to the youth squad. Kerzhakov returned to the senior squad ahead of the Lokomotiv match after several days with the youth line-up but started on the bench.
