If the City police, the district administration, and political leaders have little idea of several hundred fleeing Burmese (Myanmar) camping in the City for months, the Foreigners Regional Registration office (FRRO) has absolutely no clue! The State’s special branch which haunts political opponents with minute information of their activities too has not come across with such a vast flow in to the City. “Are they here as the media report?” was the query FERRO officials asked Postnoon. “We are all shocked to read the news about the Burmese camping in the City. Kurt Inderbitzin, the CEO of the film school, said, “Making a film is one of the toughest jobs in the world. We are not going to teach you how to use the tools that you might use during production or post production stage. Our impetus will be more on the ideas that go into making a film. I urge students to bond with each other as much as possible because this is going to help you for the rest of your lives.” So far, 30 students have joined the degree programme out of which 15 have enrolled in various Bachelors Degree Programmes. More students are expected to join the batch at a later point of time.

Ugly nuances of Monda Market mess Rowdies extracting money and the lure of lucre are preventing people from vacating the buildings of Monda Market despite the obvious danger Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com

“I

t was Chandrababu who envisioned changing the landscape of Secunderabad, but now it is a distant dream,” says a businessman. One of the important markets of the twin cities, Monda Market came into existence during the period of 1932-1936. It is spread across three acres from Ghasmandi Road to Station Road. Despite being shrouded in controversies, the market value of a single shop is worth between several lakhs to more than a crore. Brisk business and handsome profits are the reasons for most traders continuing here despite being provided space in Bowenpally. Look how a wellmeant thought becomes a racket. “The big market in Bowenpally came into existence so that all the traders move there. Now most of the smart ones have shops at both locations. One for wholesale and another for retail,” observes Parmeshwar Rao, an old timer in the area. For some traders the GHMC is playing into the hands of the local rowdy elements which want to control the entire market. “If any of the authorities try to vacate the space of market forcefully, these elements will jump into fray. No one will benefit but them”, says another businessman, on the condition of anonymity. The rowdies extract hafta from them. According to the businessmen, there was a proposal to

build a multi-storied complex that would provide space to all kinds of official activity but the project could not materialise because of the controversies surrounding the market. Fifty per cent of the market is under government space and the remaining under private ownership. Referring to the decision of Chandrababu Naidu, the then CM, a businessman points out that all occupants transferred the property from ‘lease’ to ‘ownership’ during the year 1996 in accordance with a GO. While most of the market is made of bricks and mortar (a few which were built in 1936 are of RCC). “Although a few patches

If the government is serious, it should provide some feasible solution, lest all the traders go astray,” said Suramma, who is doing business for more than three decades. It is due to these controversies in the area that even officials do not want to comment on the issue. “Our work was to list the dilapidated buildings. Let the other departments do their bit of work to provide some alternative,” said Ramachander, assistant city planner.

H

aving announced a declaration to attract Backward Classes community in the next assembly elections the main opposition Telugu Desam Party has shifted focus to its erstwhile vote bank-woman of the State. Woman voters played a crucial role in Telugu Desam Party’s victory in 1994 and 1999 Assembly elections. Party’s promises like complete ban on sale of liquor, `2 kg rice and Self Help Groups schemes like DWACRA (Development of women and children) acted as a crowd puller for the women in the State and helped the party

defeat incumbent ruling Congress in 1994. But in the 2004 general elections, the TDP faced a series of

drought, could not fulfill its promises and consequently the same women voters played a crucial role in its defeat. Keeping these factors in mind party president N Chandrababu Naidu set up a committee on woman empowerment. The committee recently held a meeting and discussed problems faced by women across the State. It is also planning to visit various districts to personally take stock of the welfare programmes being implemented by the Congress government and identify loopholes in them. “Many of the pro-women welfare programmes of the State have grossly failed to provide benefits to women. Majority of the women are denied pensions, SHG loans and other benefits.

S

tate’s chief electoral officer Bhanwar Lal has said that if it was proved that minister Parthasarathy has filed a wrong affidavit during the 2009 elections, the election commission would take suitable action. Bhanwar Lal held a review meeting with the collector and tahsildar on the changes in voters list and setting up of polling centers here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, he said if there were mistakes and deliberate omissions in the affidavit filed by the minister suitable action would be taken. It may be mentioned that charges were made against Parthasarathy that he had hid-

den the fact that there was a FERA case pending against him, in the affidavit he filed during the 2009 elections. As the minister was imposed a fine on the FERA irregularities recently, a petition was filed against him. Parthasarathy won over his TDP rival with a slender majority from Penamaluru constituency of Krishna district in 2009. He has mentioned in his affidavit that there were no cases pending against him. If it is proved that Parthasarathy had filed a wrong affidavit, he might be disqualified as per the Representation of People’s Act, 1951. Under this act, a public representative could be barred from contesting elections for six years. NSS

We will incorporate all these problems in our draft and announce our declaration for women,” party Mahila Morcha president Shoba Hymavathi told Postnoon. She further informed that Babu has novel idea of announcing a comprehensive health insurance scheme for women. “State-run Rajiv Argoysri scheme is a big failure as far as women’s health is concerned. So we have decided to incorporate this comprehensive health scheme in our manifesto,” she said. The committee will hold a series of meetings with various stake holders including intellectuals to incorporate their suggestions and ideas. The committee is likely to submit its report in a month’s time.

n light of the Supreme Court verdict on the engineering fee structure, the Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday held a review meeting with the officials concerned and discussed the matter. The minister for finance, Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, principal secretary of higher education MG Gopal, State higher education council chairman Jayaprakash and other officials attended the meeting. The officials explained to the CM about the uniform fee of engineering colleges and tuition fee reimbursement. The meeting discussed the Supreme Court judgment and steps to be taken up. It has also implications of a fee hike as the government has allocated `4,000 crore in the budget. They also estimated the additional burden, if the fee was hiked. It was decided to hold a meeting again after receiving full text of court verdict. NSS

REPORTER’S DIARY

CM or no CM, let's have tea

The City has learnt its lesson when it comes to inviting the CM for events. His recent ‘fashionably late’ appearance left many attendees fuming. Looks like the mantris need a lesson in valuing others’ time too.

O

ld ways die hard. The Chief Minister Kiran Reddy is known for keeping his audience waiting for hours. He had made an honest bid to amend this penchant after the debilitating electoral blow in the latest bypolls when he turned up on the dot at his office and met visitors by the appointed time. But that was short-lived. On Wednesday, Kiran was to address the FICCI's ladies organisation at Taj Krishna on empowering women entrepreneurs. The scheduled speech was at 4.30 pm. Some 250 participants had turned up 15 minutes before the function to facilitate the VIP's passage. An hour passed and there was no CM. Meanwhile, the tea and snacks were going cold and stale. The organisers decided to do justice to the food-— CM or no CM. The resolve was welcomed with a murmur of approval . Will the VIPs realise that the time of their audience is precious? You may say that many things could hold up a CM but then one has to manage one's time even if one could not be as scrupulous or as finicky as Mahatma Gandhi or Morarji Desai who respected the clock more than anything else. s IA

absorb many shocks. Police are the pivot of any State. While the behaviour of criminals is understandable the same is not true of some policemen. What do you say of a police officer who several months after the complaint is “still investigating” the matter of a husband who installed a hidden camera in the bedroom? Ramchandrapuram circle inspector had no qualm to say that in spite of the wife being attacked after the complaint, investigation was in progress! What do you, again, say of a police who claim a hardened criminal like Psycho Samba 'escaped' while he was being escorted by 2 SIs, 2 CIs, and 10

HEAVY WEIGHT DEMANDS

DEEPAK DESHPANDE

You are a common man even if you come in a swanky car. In the eyes of GHMC all are equal, particularly when it comes to taking building permission. Even big engineers from private firms should make many visits to have a glimpse of the higher official. The file is pending for months due to ‘less weight’ attached with it. Worst is when it comes to charitable trusts, the engineer will have to spend a long time, just for a simple scribble. “Seventy per cent of the building is ready, when you get through this. What remains is mere construction” observes a veteran. Patience is the key, if your path is genuine. But lock opens,

Fear, not actual sufferance, is central to the law. Law should command respect and fear. This doctrine of law and punishment is forgotten or not known to the law keepers, veterans believe. They were discussing the incarceration of G Janardhan Reddy and YSRC chief Jagan, two most important tenants of Chanchalguda jail. Gali who had once dreamt of becoming the CM of Karnataka and tried to dislodge B S Yeddyurappa has lost count of weeks since he first set foot in this historic structure. Initially, as evidences prove, he was greatly agitated and apprehensive, hence we hear the news of cash-for-bail that amounted to crores. But now, insiders say, he would not give a nickel because what is the use? He has learnt to live till the law takes its course. Jagan too had similar experience. Shocked that he, the Prince Charming of AP should be put in the dingy cell, he has overcome fear and now rules from the jail. If only the law would make mental torture of its quarry, it would prove more efficacious than actually padlocking them. But many others disagree too. "Let them count the rotis and know how claustrophobic a cell is," said R Kumar, a lawyer. PK Contributed by Inkeshaf Ahmed, Md Nizamuddin, Md Subhan and PK Surendran

A journey from cricket to politics CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, as friends remember him, was a lover of cricket, books and biryani. His journey changed tracks when he had to join politics at the age of 28.

W

illow was his forte but fate had willed otherwise. Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy at 52 often wonders at the trickery of time. An introvert who dreamt of leading the country's XI in cricket was sucked into the whirlpool of politics at the age of 28 after his father Amarnath Reddy’s death. He is not a quintessential Indian politician who is characterised by a silver tongue that says things he does not mean and means what he does not say.

His college friends remember him as a 'reserved man having a few friends.' He had three passions in life: cricket, biryani and studies. Old boys recall how he used to spend most of his time among books or playing league matches and in Mohini restaurant in Basheerbag, where he would tuck in biryani with a few chosen friends. Kiran perchance thought wistfully when his close friend Azharuddin who played under his captainship in University and in Ranji Trophy donned the skip-

Remember how Shanker Rao bathed him with abuses over a year ago and yet he never said a word against the abuser. He is neither a fierce believer nor an agnostic. Even for the CM post he did not jostle and he, say friends and kin, is least bothered if he wins or loses: a great trait for a healthy heart.

OUR MAN IN LONDON DEV S SUKUMAR

The betrayal of Yu Yang One of the greatest contemporary badminton players has left the sport with her name dragged through the mud. Now we can only reflect on the irony that the system which created Yu Yang betrayed her in the end. LONDON: We know little about Yu Yang, the Chinese women’s doubles player who retired from international badminton after being disqualified on Wednesday by the Badminton World Federation. Yu Yang and her partner Wang Xiaoli were found guilty, along with four Koreans and two Indonesians, of not playing a match at the Olympics in the right spirit and bringing disrepute to the game. Of the little we know of her, it is this: Yu Yang is a contemporary great of badminton. A masculine, short-haired player with tremendous hitting ability, Yang was a feared player. She won two World Championship gold medals, one Olympic gold, three All England trophies, and a staggering number of other world titles in the company of different partners. In a Chinese badminton system that has pro-

This is my last time competing. Goodbye Badminton World Federation, goodbye my beloved badminton. You have heartlessly shattered our dreams. Yu Yang Badminton star duced champions of the highest class, Yu Yang was one of many gems. In recent times, Yang and Xiaoli were the closest one could come to the word ‘unbeatable’. In her farewell message, Yu Yang said those who had decided her fate had “trampled on her dreams”. “This is my last competition. Goodbye my beloved badminton,” she posted on her personal blog. To become a successful sportsperson in China requires years of hard training and single-mindedness; for Yu Yang to have given up her career must therefore have been a heartwrenching decision. There was little doubt that the match she was penalised for was played in poor spirit. Those who watched it were angry, and believed the players had to be punished. And yet, we must concede that Yu Yang was a pawn in

a larger game of national interest. Yu Yang was a product of the Chinese system — a successful product. Chinese badminton players, in particular, have little say in their fate. The Chinese system consists of a vast network of clubs and local associations that act as conveyor belts to the national team. The players are provided training, accommodation and education at their national training centres, and they must do exactly as their coaches tell them to — for without their coaches, they would not exist as badminton players, and therefore would not have access to a better life. What Yu Yang did on Tuesday evening was in accordance with team orders. Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli were trying to avoid a quarterfinal contest with their world No. 2 teammates Qing Tian and Zhao Yunlei. Unfortunately for them, the Chinese picked the wrong time and the wrong place and the wrong methods. If the same had happened at any other event, it might have been ignored. But at the Olympics, the world’s media was in attendance, and there was a public uproar. The British press played it up prominently. The two teams played so poorly that no defence was admissible. The Badminton World Federation was left with no option but to disqualify them. The eight players hadn’t expected things to spiral out of control. But also perhaps they never expected their own national associations to let them down. The Chinese team management, officially at least, disapproved of the players’ tactics. In other words, the players were suddenly the scapegoats for something they had little say in. It’s hard to imagine what they went through. From heroes, they had become an embarrassment to their nations. And Yu Yang — what of her? Will she fade into oblivion? Will she return to the circuit? Will everybody forget her All England and World Championship and medals and remember her only as a cheat? We can only reflect on the irony that the system that created Yu Yang betrayed her in the end.

he Right to Information Act (2005) became effective in October 2005 to empower every citizen to ask questions from the Government. This Act has given the Indian citizens the right to seek information and take copies of government documents on one hand and made the public officers accountable on the other. The application may be submitted electronically or in a hard copy to the designated Public Information Officer (PIO). Every government department now has a PIO who is responsible to provide the information to any and every applicant. The application should be accompanied with a payment of Rs10 towards processing charges for the Central Government Departments. The fees may vary from state to state for the departments at the state level. It can be paid in Cash, by a Demand Draft or by a Money Order. You must remember to take a receipt for the application fees paid.

of questions that can be asked. However, it is advisable to keep your list of questions short and queries precise. The application must contain the name of the person asking for information, his/her signature and application fee details like DD or Cheque Numbers. The reason for seeking information need not be stated as any

Write or type the application in a clean, white sheet of paper. Frame the questions clearly with the intention for finding out reasons rather than accusing. For example, avoid using words like ‘Why did you” and “How could you”. Instead use words like “share the process followed” or “would like to know the manner in which...”. There is no limit to the number

Indian citizen has the Right to Information. The application may be rejected if the department is exempt from disclosure or if the disclosure infringes upon the privacy or copyright of a person other than the government. The upper limit for providing the information is 30 days. However, it is only 48 hours in cases involving life or liberty of a person. It is 35 days if the application is given to the Assistant PIO and 40 days if the information concerns a third party from whom the department might need to get the information before responding to the RTI application. If the information is not provided within these time frames, it is deemed as a refusal to provide information. One of the reasons for the success of RTI is that if the information is not provided within 30 days of application, it directly penalizes the concerned officer by deducting `250 per day of delay up to a maximum of `25,000 per application, from the salary. If wrong information is provided, a penalty up to `25,000 can be imposed on the officer.

NEW YORK: US business software giant Oracle said Thursday it agreed to accept a $306 million settlement from German rival SAP to shortcut the appeals process in a suit over massive copyright infringement. The agreement is a stipulation between the two firms to end the case in the lower courts and allow an appeal to proceed. Oracle was awarded $1.3 billion by a jury in November 2010 in the case in which SAP was accused of a massive scheme to download and copy software from the Silicon Valley giant. AFP

Row dogs Jagannath entry rules Several national and international dignitaries, including Indira Gandhi, have been denied permission to enter the shrine at Puri as they are not ‘Orthodox Hindus’ as per the temples admission rules. BHUBANESWAR: "Only Orthodox Hindus are allowed," a signboard hanging from the Lion's Gate of Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri has triggered many a controversy in the past and continues to arouse strong feelings even today. The latest such incident took place when an American national attempted to climb 'Nandighosh', the chariot of Lord Jagannath during the world famous "Rath Yatra", the annual car festival of the deity, in June. The American, identified as Noel Magee Hayden, was allegedly beaten up by temple security personnel and driven out of the chariot as he was not a born Hindu.

Cops face contempt action: SC NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today warned the DGPs and Commissioners of Police in all the states and union territories of contempt action if they fail to take action on use of tinted glasses in vehicles. A bench of justices BS Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar asked the police machinery in the country to not only challan the offending vehicles but also to take forthwith measures to remove materials pasted on safety glasses by vehicle users. "We are not emphasising on security threat to nation but it is a clear violation of law. No material can be pasted on safety glasses, this law needs to be enforced. "At this stage we will not initiate any action on the DGPs and other officials but issue a clear warning that in case of non-compliance the court shall be compelled to initiate appropriate action under the contempt of courts act without any notice," Justice Kumar said. On July 22, the SC had expressed its dissatisfaction over tardy implementation of its directions banning the use of tint on car windows, beyond a permissible limit, in Delhi. PTI

case in this connection, the Shaknaracharya of Govardhan Peeth in Puri, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati also denounced the manner in which the foreigner was treated by security personnel. "The foreigner could have been requested not to climb the chariot or enter the temple as he is not an orthodox Hindu. There is no justification in physically assaulting him," the Shankaracharya observed. The assault of the American had reminded people of tales about how a number of dignitaries, including former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had not been allowed to enter the 12th Century shrine.

"In 1984, Indira Gandhi was not allowed to enter the temple of Lord Jagannath at Puri because she had married a Parsi, Feroze Gandhi," pointed out a priest. "While framing the rules and regulations for the administration of the temple, the management might have taken into account the ravages of the Muslim attacks on the temple several times in the past," according to historians. "That might have induced the Sevayatas to impose restriction on the entry of non-Hindus into the temple," say Dr Rekharani Khuntia and Dr Brajabandhu Bhatta in a study. PTI

More and more couples are opting for holiday destinations such as Udaipur and Jaipur to explore the idea away from prying eyes back home and to reduce costs. s thousands of tourists arrive here this September, the start of the tourist season, so will Rajan and Parul. But this couple from Delhi will have on their minds things other than just exploring this city of lakes, often called Venice of the East. While on their weeklong vacation, the childless couple, in their 30s, will be undergoing a session for a test-tube baby at a medical centre in Udaipur, about 400 km from the state capital Jaipur.

The money

A

ccording to travel industry estimates, medical tourism involving foreigners in India would be worth $2 billion by 2015. On an average, 150,000 medical tourists travel to the country annually. Mixing vacation with a purpose didn’t occur to them on their own. “This was suggested to me by a cousin,” said Rajan Wadhwa, a resident of Paschim Vihar in west Delhi. “My cousin was blessed with a child after undergoing treatment in Udaipur and he suggested the same to me as going to another city helps stay away from the probing eyes of relatives,” the computer science graduate told IANS. Ajay Murdia, chief of the Indira Infertility Clinic & Test Tube Baby Centre, has over three decades’ experience calls it the domestic version of the medical tourism. “We help some of our patients undergo initial counselling and tests while holidaying in the city.” According to Murdia, whose paper on male infertility was

This Rajasthan city of 450,000 people has four centres offering infertility solutions. This trend has spread to other tourist destinations like Jaipur and Jodhpur. Upwan Pandia, an anaesthetist, shuttles between all three cities. “However, the Udaipur centres score over others in the state in terms of modern technology and high success

The trend of doctors or clinics in Udaipur offering travel desk facilities to patients is fast catching on. “We give brochures on tourist destinations in and around Udaipur to patients. Once they decide on their itinerary, we get down to chalk-

US stands firm against arming Syrian rebels Fearing a post-Assad bloodbath in Syria, it has insisted that adding more weapons into the mix would only fuel more violence. WASHINGTON: The United States is stepping up support for the Syrian rebels but, despite the failure of UN envoy Kofi Annan’s mission, is sticking to its refusal to pour arms into a complex conflict. Annan, the UN and the Arab League’s pointman on Syria, resigned on Thursday, leaving the diplomatic track in shreds and spurring calls for action, but the US administration again said it was not considering military intervention. “Our position has not changed: We provide non-lethal assistance to the opposition,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said aboard Air Force One. Some experts and US lawmakers now openly question whether Washington should not use its superior military strength and intelligence capabilities to tip the scales in the favor of the opposition and hasten the regime’s demise. But the US administration is reluctant to become embroiled in another Middle Eastern war with November’s election looming. Fearing a post-Assad bloodbath in Syria, it has insisted that adding more weapons into the mix — beyond Assad’s impressive government stockpile and the rebels’ growing arsenal of smuggled guns — would only fuel more violence. “Our analysis is that the regime’s capability is being

UN Assembly to vote on Syria resolution

A

rab nations have dropped an explicit demand for President Bashar al-Assad to quit from a resolution on the Syria conflict to be voted at the UN General Assembly on Friday. With the international community reeling from the resignation of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, the Arab League and their western supporters are confident the resolution will be passed in the 193-member assembly. But they have toned it down in a bid to get as big a majority as possible. Faced with opposition from some Arab and Latin American countries,

the resolution, drawn up by Saudi Arabia, has been stripped of the demand for Assad to stand down and for the wider application of sanctions ordered by the Arab League. Russia and China, which have vetoed three UN Security Council resolutions that could have led to sanctions against Assad’s government, are expected to vote against the text. No country can veto a resolution in the General Assembly however. A resolution passed by 137 votes to 12 on February 16 led to the creation of the special envoy’s post.

Christians get arms from Assad regime The minorities fear being targeted by Islamist radicals

E

vidence mounts that foreign Islamists are fighting alongside Syria’s increasingly radicalised rebels, Christians in Aleppo and elsewhere are taking up arms, often supplied by the regime. “We saw what happened to the Christians in Iraq,” Abu George, a Christian resident of Aleppo’s Aziza district told GlobalPost. “What is going on in Aleppo is not a popular revolution for democracy and freedom. The fighters of the so-called Free Syrian Army are radical Sunnis who want to establish an Islamic state.” While the 30-year-old shopkeeper said he had not received any direct threats from Syria’s Sunni Muslim rebels, he fears a repeat of Iraq’s sectarian bloodletting. Since the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, the UN Human Rights Council estimates around half of Iraq’s 1.4 million Christians have fled the country, driven out by nearly a decade of church bombings, kidnappings and sectarian murder. The plight of Christians in Iraq has long worried Syria’s estimated two million Christians, around 10 per cent of the population. The nightmare of similar persecution has led them to support the secular regime of President Bashar alAssad, which presents itself as a defender of minorities. With Syria now gripped by civil war and the Assad regime fighting for its survival, however, Christians like Abu George fear retribution, already occurring in some parts of the country, from the Sunni-led rebels they refused to back. W

e all do it. We see a housekeeper, or a houseboy, or a driver, or someone in a similar low-paying job, and assume that the position they are in — a position with virtually no upward mobility — is where they are meant to be. We assume – usually rightly so — that in five years, or 10, or 50, that the housekeeper will still be a housekeeper, the driver still a driver, etc. Often, sadly, pathetically, we don’t want to change the status quo, to help them, because it’s darn convenient to have a familiar and competent cook, or driver, or nanny, helping us navigate through our lives. Frequently, we rationalise our unwillingness to help them by assuming there is nothing we can do for them anyway, that there is no way to change the status quo because the person in question lacks the education, the desire, the ambition, perhaps even the intelligence to move forward. If you’re one of those who make these assumptions, I’m here to tell you you’re wrong. And I can prove it. Eighteen months ago, I hired a housekeeper. Call her Aditi. In her first month working for me, she made lots of obvious mistakes, forgetting to clean certain things, or to buy or do things on

her checklist, etc. It was annoying, and I didn’t know if she would make it as my housekeeper. But then I noticed that if I pointed out a mistake once, she learned from it, and never made the mistake again. In this process of “training” her, I also began to learn about her background — the chain of people who had abused her throughout her life, the husband and in-laws who abused her now, the many obstacles that had stopped her from getting an education, and the impoverished life that seemed to be hers now and forever. Bleak. Very bleak. But Aditi herself was not bleak… she was amazing. She was positive and hard-working, and even though her English skills were very limited, I could see she was very bright. I asked her one day if she wanted to be a housekeeper her whole life, and she shook her head emphatically: “No!” I then asked her if she had a plan to get out of housekeeping, and she just gave me a sad, defeated look. Hmmm. A friend had an old laptop, which I borrowed and on which I loaded a basic typing tutorial. I figured an English typing program would help her English skills, teach her a bit about computers and teach her to type. And if she could type, maybe there was a future out there that didn’t include cleaning my toilets. A simple receptionist job, perhaps.

Aditi had never used a computer, of course, so I spent five minutes with her — that’s really all the time I had — and showed her how to turn it on, how to launch the program, then explained that I wanted her to take 30 minutes a day while she was at work to practice typing. The rest of this story is almost unbelievable, but here goes. Within a week, Aditi was up to typing 10 words a minute. Within a month, 20. Two months, 30. I added more tutorials, in Explorer, Word, Excel. She was soon navigating around a computer like a pro, doing basic budgets in Excel, typing letters in Word, even searching for ingredients for meals (she was my cook, too) in Google. Her English improved. We

started to communicate not by cell phones, but over Skype, and email. Just over a year after she started cleaning and cooking for me — a year after I had actually pondered firing her because I didn’t know if she could make it as my housekeeper — it was clear that her communication and computer skills were better than many of the college grads I interviewed every day. I brought her into my company as a job candidate, to work as a telemarketer, and she got the job. Her pay went up substantially, and more importantly, she made the jump from a career with NO upward mobility to one with infinite upward mobility. To see her at work now — glowing (I’m not exaggerating) with happiness and hope – lifts my spirits every single day. And how is Aditi doing in her new job? Superbly. She is arguably our strongest telemarketer, and our head of marketing is already talking about promoting her. Now, if you think this is a one-off — that Aditi is a rare, talented gem in a sea of mediocrity — tune in to my column next week. Talent is around us everywhere, and if those of us who are a little more fortunate open our eyes to it, and nurture it, India and the world will be a far better place. EDITORIALS One controversy too many for London 2012

T

he disastrous controversy surrounding the Olympic badminton has already claimed the career of one superstar in Yu Yang, but the Games on the whole have also suffered from a raft of horrible refereeing decisions, some downright farcical errors by the stars competitors themselves, and technical glitches that have left keyed-up sportsmen and women seething on the sidelines. The fault in most of this does not lie with the organisers themselves, namely BOA and the London 2012 committee. In fact, the 2012 Olympics have been a refreshing change from the superficial pomp of Beijing that was more about Chinese sporting hegemony than anything to do with the Olympic spirit. But London should be careful that these games are not remembered for the controversies they threw up rather than the fact that it was a sporting occasion when the world’s best excelled at the things they do best. Let’s hope the athletics remain controversy-free.

ladmir Putin once again proved why he’s the most macho of all heads of state. As he turned up yesterday to watch the Judy at the Olympics he looked like a man’s man, someone who would put the effete David Cameron in his place on a judo mat. Putin has revelled in his ‘strong man’ image; pictures of a shirtless hunter traversing the Russian wilds are legendary, and as he hugged Tagir Khaibulaev one could almost sense that he would give anything to compete at the Games.

David Wu was one of the first MTV VJs to appear on Indian screens. More popularly known as the ‘Wuman’, the charismatic ChineseAmerican hosted the laid-back weekend Wu-Man Show and Go West. He later shifted to Channel V Asia and continued to host Go West and several other shows. Apart from his TV stint, Wu has also starred in a string of movies, including Farewell My Concubine, Full Throttle and Devils on the Doorstep. He continues to host TV shows and recently appeared as a judge on Smart Cook, a Chinese reality show.

But early MTV wasn’t just about the music. It came complete with a set of youthful, chatty video jockeys (VJs) who, to our adolescent eyes, seemed the very epitome of cool.

People watched Channel V’s The Ticket for two things; the low-down on the latest movies and Sophiya Haque. In the ‘90s, the leggy VJ Sophiya was one of the more memorable faces on the channel and went on to host Rewind and Sophiya’s Choice. She has made appearances in movies like Khoobsurat, Snip and The Rising: The Ballad of Mangal Pandey. She also acted in the British TV series Coronation Street and did a cameo in the Angelina Jolie-starrer Wanted. As of 2012, she’s acting in a TV series, House of Anubis, a soap opera targeted at children and teenagers.

RUBY BHATIA

Chirpy, sassy and cute, Ruby Bhatia stormed Channel V in the ‘90s. Though she was with the channel for only four years, her charismatic personality made her popular. She was seen in serials like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi and Kasauti Zindagi Kay and movies such as Chori Chori Chupke Chupke and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon.

Strong Canadian accents and permed hair were big in the ‘90s, and a major reason was VJ Kamal Sidhu. First with Channel V and later with MTV Asia, Kamal was a fixture on Indian music channels in the decade. Her athletic figure and her chiselled features made her popular with teenagers, even though she was more subdued than the other VJs. Kamal starred in a couple of movies, Little Zizou and Aar Ya Paar, but is better known for hosting and producing an environmental show, EarthPulse, on the National Geographic Channel. She is also reportedly working on a film script currently.

t was a fun night out, but the next morning Rajat woke up and noticed something strange with his wrist, it was drooping and lacked sensation. A visit to the doctor revealed that he had SNS (Saturday Night Syndrome).

caused by a impact with a muscle that has been crushed against the thigh. According to Dr Sunil, “This usually happens to people who are into contact sports (like football) though it may happen to others also. When there is an injury to the thigh, the muscles get crushed thus making it difficult for the person to keep their leg straight.” The injury is a soft tissue injury.

SATURDAY NIGHT SYNDROME If the name gives you the sense that this has something to with partying, then you aren’t entirely wrong. Saturday night syndrome occurs due to pressure on the radial nerve by keeping the arm in some unusual position while sleeping. This occurs usually after a night of heavy drinking as one may lose consciousness. The palsy occurs due to injury to the nerve in the bone of the arm. According to Dr Sunil Apsingi, consultant orthopaedic and sports injuries, KIMS, “Saturday Night Syndrome gets its name from a situation in which people who are drunk unknowingly sit with their arms crossed thereby compressing the nerve. This need not be only with regard to people who are drunk. Anyone who unknowingly stays in such a position for a long time may exert pressure on the arm where that particular nerve is located.” Talking about the position which causes the injury he says that one is if a person sleeps with his/her hand over the head and the second is in case someone is laying over your arm.

RECOVERY AND TREATMENT Saturday Night Syndrome can occur to anyone who sleeps in the wrong position and is not conscious enough to notice the pain or discomfort caused due to the position. In any other situation, the pain and discomfort is noticed and the person then changes position, explains Dr Sunil. Saturday Night syndrome is also known as Saturday night palsy. Wrist drop is the most common symptom associated with SNS. Certain patients may also suffer from swelling, paralysis and severe pain in the arm.

TREATMENT Dr Sunil says, “When it comes to treatment, observation is important. First we need to wait for the nerve to come back to normal, In certain cases a wrist splint may be advised to prevent the tendon

from further tearing and exerting pressure on the nerve.” Physiotherapy may also be advised. Dr Sunil mentions that in extreme cases, surgery may also be considered. Saturday Night Syndrome unlike dead leg syndrome may take a longer time to heal as the crushed nerve needs to replace itself. In some cases it may even take the patient up to a year.

DEAD LEG SYNDROME Dead leg syndrome is also known as quadriceps contusion. This occurs due to a bruise or contusion that is

Talking about recovery and treatment, Dr Sunil says, “Recovery usually takes time depending on the injury. Treatment will be required till the person reaches a fitness level similar to what it was before the injury. In terms of immediate treatment the “RICE” method is advised.” RICE implies: Rest, ice packs , compression and elevation which is usually advised for all kinds of softtissue injuries. Apart from the RICE technique Dr Sunil says that physiotherapy may also be advised. When it comes to dead leg syndrome in severe cases it may take up to 12 weeks to recover but in regular cases it takes around six weeks.

STEM CELLS

BREAKTHROUGH

Stem cells blamed for cancer re-growth The discovery should now lead researchers to new drugs that could focus on targeting stem cells that could cause tumours to reappear after cancer therapy PARIS: Researchers presented evidence on Wednesday for the existence of cancer stem cells, with three different studies seeking to end a decades-old scientific dispute about how tumours grow. The discovery should lead to new drugs targeting stem cells that cause tumours to reappear after cancer therapy, the teams argued in three scientific papers published simultaneously in the journals Nature and Science. “The hypothesis (that cancer stem cells exist) has been around now for some time. Hopefully these three papers now make an end to the discussion,” Dutch researcher Hugo Snippert told AFP. All the studies were conducted on lab mice. Some experts have maintained that tumours are comprised of masses of cancer cells that are all the same, and all dividing. But Snippert said the latest papers clearly show a hierarchy of cells in tumours, with different functions -- including stem cells that act as cancer cell factories. Stem cells are infant cells that develop into specialised tissues of the body, touted by medicine as a future source from which to replenish damaged tissue. In the case of intestinal cancer, a healthy stem cell mutates to create a “cell of origin” from which a tumour grows, said Snippert. The tumour contains stem cells which then create new cancer cells. Cancer stem cells must now be targeted for drug research, argued Snippert, a member of the University Medical Center Utrecht research team which focused on intestinal cancer and published its findings in Science. “Since the cancer stem cells are so similar to normal stem cells, most treatments also harm the normal stem cells,” he said.

“That is why it is important now to have a look at cancer stem cells, comparing them to normal stem cells to find the differences.” Focusing on incurable brain tumours, a US-based research team said they had found a subset of cells that appear to be the source of new tumour growth after chemotherapy. “This study serves as a proof of principle that in at least some solid tumours functional cancer stem cells exist,” researcher Luis Parada of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center told AFP. Also writing in Nature, a separate

team in Belgium and the UK found a sub-population of tumour cells with stemlike properties in skin cancer. “Taken together these reports provide evidence that point towards the existence of cells that may represent cancer stem cells,” said a Nature press statement. Snippert said the latest technology has allowed the scientists to examine tumour cancer growth in as natural a state as possible, unlike earlier studies that involved tumour transplants in lab mice. The Dutch team was able to breed special mice in which different tumour cells displayed different colours which could then be studied under a microscope. Say the tumour cells were red and the stem cell blue, the scientists could follow the stem cell’s progeny as they spread in the tumour. “Because of the colours we could visualise everything within one and the same tumour in its original mouse at the original position where the tumour was formed,” Snippert said. “It is more natural... as it would behave normally in patients.” The three teams studied different organs using somewhat different techniques, but all with technology that allowed them to let the tumours grow undisturbed, said Snippert. “Better understanding of the cancer stem cells will be critical for re-evaluation of existing therapies and development of new ones,” added Parada. Cataract surgery may prevent hip fractures Helping older patients see better may prevent hip fractures.

T

he study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that having surgery to correct cataracts may reduce the risk of hip fractures among elderly. According to US News and World Report, a cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens. Symptoms of cataracts can include blurry vision, glare and poor night vision. As a result, people with cataracts may be more prone to falls. Bone fractures due to falls are a major cause of disability and death among the elderly, according to WebMD. Fall-related injuries cost the US more than $10 billion in health care costs in 2000, according to researchers. In the paper, researcher Victoria Tseng, MD, of Brown University, wrote, “Cataract surgery has already been demonstrated to be a cost-effective intervention for visual improvement. The results in this study suggest the need for further investigation of the additional potential benefit of cataract surgery as a cost-effective intervention.” Gerald McGwin, who has studied the effects of cataract surgery said, “Fracturing a hip is at the tip of the iceberg.” He added that there are a lot of other consequences to poor eyesight in adults. t was back in 2008 featured in Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton documentary that we saw Louis Vuitton’s creative head, designer Marc Jacobs meet the polka-dot obsessed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. It was the meeting of kinds from which a full-fledged collaboration between the luxury label and the artist was to be emerged this year. What Louis Vuitton did was astonishing. Not only did they sponsor Kusama’s current retrospective touring exhibition (recently shown at Tate Modern in London), Vuitton designed a collection of garments and accessories that are reminiscent of Kusama’s artwork and polkadotted outlook in life. Scarves, bathing suits, handbags, sunglasses, watch, footwear, trench coats, leather pouches, and some more from the Yayoi Kusama collection for Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton has long collaborated with contemporary artists and designers for a one of a

And with Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami with whom the ‘LV’ monogram was transformed into a pop rainbow colour animation series onto leather goods. Collections with American painter and photographer Richard Prince, who’s nurse paintings—one of which appeared on a Sonic Youth album cover – was a huge reference in the closing looks at the Vuitton Spring 2008 show. In the same Louis Vuitton documentary where we saw Marc Jacobs’ evident love for Yayoi, we also discovered that Marc Jacobs who is a very successful designer today, had not invested in a home or a car but only expensive artwork. His love for the arts transpired in the collections he designs for Louis Vuitton. It is also perhaps the leadership of CEO Louis Vuitton Yves Carcelle, the 64-year-old Frenchman, who has led the brand to unusually great successes— both in terms of numbers and popularity. Yves Carcelle a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique and the INSEAD school, is an active

Amongst Marc Jacobs and the art aficionados, her fan base was evident in hometown Matsumoto where she designed a bus in signature polka dots commissioned by the city. Her success as an artist saw a landmark in 1959 with the “Infinity Net” artwork. Since then, her obsessive, infinite and rhythmic artistic style continues to fascinate the con-

temporary art world. With this Louis Vuitton tieup, Yayoi’s name and work will reach shores and new audiences, which she must have never expected at the age of 83. Kusama’s unique personality and signature are characterised by a captivating world where subversive fondness for avant-garde is united with an impulsive energy. Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs spoke on the Yayoi & Vuitton collection on the company website: “Project is going to be dynamic and very animated like Kusama represents this obsession with Polka Dots and this round shape which has no end and therefore is infinite. It represents a true collaboration because there is very much of the Vuitton monogram and spots from Kusama, and to me both of them are endless, timeless and forever.” The artwork of Yayoi Kusama is deeply influenced by the intense

visions she experienced as a child. Dots, waves and mirrors are her signature, which one can now buy as imposed on their favourite Louis Vuitton products. This is the sort of collaborations that truly honour both parties involved and creates a new entity that has a place of its own in fashion and art.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Victory saw the 24-year-old top seed become the first male player in history to win successive World Championship and Olympic titles. JULIAN GUYER Agencie France-Presse LONDON: China's Zhang Jike won the Olympic men's singles table tennis gold medal as he completed a career grand slam by defeating compatriot Wang Hao 4-1 in the final on Thursday. Victory saw 24-year-old top seed Zhang become the first male player in history to win successive World Championship and Olympic titles. Zhang stormed into a 3-0 lead before number two seed Wang, singles silver medallist at both the 2004 and 2008 Games, hit back. But Zhang held his nerve for an 18-16, 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 13-11 win over the 27-year-old Wang, the 2009 world champion, in a final which confirmed China's status as table tennis's pre-eminent nation.

An elated Zhang celebrated his victory by running to the empty podium and kissing the top step.

An elated Zhang celebrated his victory by leaping out of the court and running to the empty podium, kissing the top step on which he would soon be standing to receive his gold medal. "I'm very excited, it's my first time at the Olympics and

it has been my dream to win the gold medal since I started playing." His latest success gave Zhang a 'grand slam' as he added Olympic gold to the World Cup and World Championship titles he won in Paris and Rotterdam respectively last year.

Putin spurs on Russia Putin and British Foreign Secretary William Hague were seen explaining the sport to British PM David Cameron. BARNABY CHESTERMAN Agencie France-Presse LONDON: Kayla Harrison became the first American Olympic judo champion on Thursday as Tagir Khaibulaev (right) won gold in front of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Harrison beat home favourite Gemma Gibbons in the women's under-78kg final to eclipse the achievement of her coach Jimmy Pedro, a bronze medallist at both the 1996 and 2004 Games. In so doing, she broke British hearts but Gibbons's run to the final had been as unexpected as it was celebrated by a raucous home crowd. Putin's appearance had been anticipated alongside British PM David Cameron, who sat in the VIP area with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. Having the two heads of state in attendance seemed

to inspire their athletes, with Russian Khaibulaev going one better than Gibbons. He won the men's under100kg division by beating reigning champion Tuvshinbayar Naidan of Mongolia in the final with a stunning seoi-nage (shoulder throw). That took Russia's tally to three gold medals in the judo competition and they are set to top the table after Friday's final heavyweight categories.

Meanwhile Wang reacted to his latest Olympic final loss by saying: "Everyone wants to win the gold, but I lost to a teammate so it's not so serious. I've done my best." Germany's Dimitrij Ovtcharov took men's singles bronze after a 4-2 win over Chuang Chih-Yuan of Taiwan. Ovtcharov's victory gave Germany just their second men's singles medal as he followed in the footsteps of German coach Jorg Rosskopf, who also won bronze at Atlanta in 1996.

Bo-Bae hits all the right targets LONDON: South Korea's Ki Bo-Bae added the Olympic Games women's individual archery gold to her team title victory but America's Khatuna Lorig, who trained archers on hit movie The Hunger Games, missed out. Ki defeated Mexico's Aida Roman in the final at Lord's. Another Mexican, Mariana Avitia, claimed bronze defeating Lorig of the US, who was taking part in her fifth successive Olympics under a third different national flag. In Barcelona in 1992, she was a member of the Unified Team formed after the breakup of the former Soviet Union, before representing Georgia in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney four years later. Four years ago in Beijing, she was already an American citizen. Lorig trained actress Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games. Ki's win meant South Korea took back the title they had lost to China in 2008.

28-29 NBA stars shatter Brazil record The US beat Nigeria 156–73 to break the Olympic single-game scoring record. LONDON: United States NBA stars shattered the Olympic single-game scoring record on Thursday, producing one of the greatest shooting performances in basketball history in a 156-73 rout of Nigeria. On a day when Spain and Russia clinched berths in the medal playoffs with thrilling victories and France and Argentina took big steps toward reaching the quarter-finals with triumphs, the American multi-millionaires stole the show. Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points, the most by any American player in Olympic history in a game, and the New York Knicks' playmaker's 10-of12 3-point shooting was also a US Olympic mark. "When they shoot like this, I don't know if there is any team that can beat them," Nigeria's Ike Diogu said. The old Olympic record for points by a team in one game was set by Brazil in 1988 at Seoul in a 138-85 preliminary round triumph over Egypt. The Americans also eclipsed their own Olympic team record for points in a game, set in a 13370 victory over China in 1996 at Atlanta. AFP

LONDON: After f o u r - t i m e Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy (right) became the second Briton in as many days to underline his credentials as one of Britain's greatest ever Olympians. But as Hoy's sprint team and the German pair of Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogel took the first two of 10 track cycling golds there was plenty of controversy. Since the Beijing Olympics changes to the rules means there is now gender parity across the Olympic track disciplines with the men and women racing the five same events. But on the first night, Olympic sprint champion Victoria Pendleton and partner Jessica Varnish were the first to fall foul of rules governing changeovers in the team event. The pair had set a new world record in qualifying, which was later eclipsed by China's Guo Shuang and Gong Jinjie, only for disas-

Despite pleas by British cycling team boss Dave Brailsford, the pair were relegated for the infringement, effectively ending Varnish's Olympics and Pendleton's hopes of three golds. Guo and Gong, went on to beat Germany in the gold medal match to hand China their first ever Olympic cycling gold. But in a few minutes the judges told Germany they would be given the gold because of an even slighter infringement in the same changeover zone.

Vijender wins again Gausha’s loss was the seventh successive defeat suffered by a US boxer and meant they had just two male competitors remaining. LONDON: Vijender Singh is just one victory away from claiming a second straight Olympic boxing bronze medal and so making yet more Games history for India. Vijender, 26, gained a narrow 16-15 win over Terrell Gausha of the United States in the second round of the middleweight competition at London’s Excel Arena on Thursday. At Beijing, Vijender became the first Indian to win an Olympic boxing medal and admitted after Thursday’s bout it had been a job to give himself a chance of another podium place. “The coaches were saying calm down, calm down otherwise you will blow the fight,” he said. “I admit I was very excited but I felt I had the measure of him and just needed to be prudent in the final round to ensure I got through.” Vijender had disappointed home fans by failing to reach the final in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. urkmen boxing referee Ishanguly Meretnyyazov was sent home from the Olympics Thursday after his display in a controversial bout, which Japanese bantamweight Satoshi Shimizu won on appeal. Meretnyyazov was criticised for not stopping Wednesday’s contest in the third round when Shimizu’s exhausted opponent, Magomed Abdulhamidov of Azerbaijan, went to the floor several times. He was also faulted for giving Abdulhamidov too much time to recover. The Azeri was inexplicably awarded a 22-17 decision by the five judges, which was changed to a thirdround stoppage win for Shimizu after an appeal. Another referee to fall foul of amateur boxing body AIBA was Germany’s Frank Scharmach, who received a five-day suspension from competition. He had caused consternation among the Iranian team and a large part of the crowd when he disqualified Iranian heavyweight Ali Mazaheri.

Douglas sizzles to claim gold TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Gabrielle Douglas boldly triumphed in the women’s individual gymnastics final on Thursday to give the United States their third consecutive Olympic female champion. The 16-year-old from Virginia finished ahead of Russia’s Viktoria Komova at the North Greenwich Arena, while Komova’s team-mate Aliya Mustafina took the bronze medal. Mustafina and America’s Alexandra Rais-

man finished level on 59.566 points in third position, but Mustafina won the bronze on tie-breaking criteria. Komova had been seeking revenge after the USA beat Russia to the gold medal in the team event, but Douglas produced a near-faultless performance to succeed compatriots Carly Patterson and Nastia Liukin as the women’s Olympic champion. She also became the first black gymnast to win the individual women’s Olympic title. “It kinda hasn’t sunk in yet. But it will,” she said.

“A lot was going through my mind. I was just thinking that all the hard work had paid off. I was speechless, just shedding tears of joy and waving to the crowd.” It is Douglas’ second gold medal at the London Games, after her role in the Americans’ team success, while she will also compete in the uneven bars final on August 6 and the balance beam final on August 7. Douglas took the lead after the vault and held on to it despite a strong uneven bars routine from Komova.

REBECCA BRYAN Agence France-Presse LONDON: Michael Phelps delivered one more historymaking Olympic performance on Thursday, winning the 200m medley to become the first man to win the same individual swimming event at three straight Games. Phelps, already denied trebles in London in the 400m medley and 200m butterfly, delivered a vintage performance to win in 1min 54.27sec and collect his 20th career Olympic medal — and his 16th gold. “The three-peat was hard,” Phelps said. “I knew it would be a cool thing to do and add to the resume to be the first guy to do it, it hurt.” He subdued his great rival — team-mate Ryan Lochte — who settled for silver in 1:54.90. Hungarian Laszlo Cseh earned bronze in 1:56.22. Although it was his first individual gold of the 2012 Games, there was no fistpumping celebration from Phelps but instead a smile of quiet satisfaction as his mother and sister cheered from the stands.
