TRS wants govt to stay? U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com
T
RS leader K Tarakarama Rao today (Saturday) said that the future of Congress Government was in hands of the TDP. Talking to the media at the media point in the morning Tarakarama Rao said that if the Government falls due to the no-confidence motion, then the bill for Telangana cannot be passed. He was of the opinion that if the motion is taken up, the TRS will also support it and the Government will lose the vote, he opined. On the other hand the T-TDP leader M Narsimlu charged that the TRS has suddenly changed its tune and was trying to protect the Government. In the name of Telangana resolution, the TRS was pre-
K Tarakarama Rao venting the no-confidence motion to be taken up in the house. Both the TRS and the TDP again created a ruckus in the
house in the very first ten minutes and the speaker was forced to adjourn the house for 10 minutes. The TDP leader D Nagendra argued that the no-confidence motion must be taken up today itself. He charged that the Government was trying to avoid the motion and running away from it. The Government is whiling away the time he charged. If the Chief Minister Kiran Kumar was so keen on proving a majority, why is he not taking it up, he questioned? Another TDP leader Nannapaneni Rajakumari demanded that the session should be continued for another 10 days for the members to discuss various issues of the public. She also wanted the speaker to take up the no-confidence motion.

Speaker records two NCMs Postnoon News
Speaker Nadendla Manohar today acknowledged that he has received two no-confidence motions (NCM) and that they are in order. Talking to the agitated members who sat in the well of the house, he said that the Government will examine the notices of the no confidence motion and will schedule them. He advised the members to maintain decorum of the House and give the government some time to examine the no confidence motions.
Will she or won’t she? Where are the laptops given to MLAs? With their kids, of course! Postnoon News
HYDERABAD: Speaker Nadendla Manohar Reddy wants to run a paperless Assembly session, possibly from the New Year. But where are the laptops and iPads that were given to legislators? And do all the stakeholders have the necessary accessories to go with the gadgets? Evidently not. The Speaker had earlier announced that all the members would receive laptops and WiFi facility would also be provided to them. But many legislators claim that they have not received anything of the sort. And it is not just the laptops that seem to have done the disappearing act. Even the radio frequency identification cards that had been issued to the legislators are nowhere to be seen. These cards were originally meant to record attendance. But many members are still signing the register as they either haven't got the cards or they don't know
All the members would receive laptops and WiFi facility would also be provided to them how to use them. According to some MLAs who spoke to Postnoon, they have received the laptops, but it is their children who are using them. And wresting them away from kids if a tough job, you see! A few MLAs said that they are still learning how to operate them while others said that there was no need for laptops in the Assembly. When contacted a senior MLA, he said that there was
no way one could avoid the use of paper in the Assembly. "It can be only less paper and cannot become a paperless Assembly," he opined. However, there are a few techsavvy babus who don't mind making the most of the facilities provided to them. Marri Sashidhar Reddy the MLA from Sanathnagar who has all kinds of gadgets said that he has been using the laptop. Speaker Manohar is quoted as saying that it will take time for all the MLAs to get used to computer and Net. It was same when the mobile phone appeared, he reminded critics. At the same time the latest cameras supposed to be installed for surveillance in the Assembly premises are still lying in the stores unused, it is learnt. The Assembly library is in the process of getting digitised. But all these high technology changes might take a long time to process. It may not be done immediately and the Speaker might not be able to have a paperless business with ease. Coming to the security part the police believe that going hitech is much more effective as the man behind its operation. Police therefore believe in physical observance and presence. Don’t fret about it is what they say.
Will YS Vijayamma, the lone official MLA from YSR Congress, lose her primary membership? It’s a contested point. Some officials of the Legislature say she must mark her presence today or else she may be served with a notice of disqualification (six months of absence), if not outright disqualification. But some other officials say it can happen only in the case of continuous absence from 60 sittings a year. Anyway, mother of Jagan Mohan Reddy, is playing truant with the Assembly setting rumours about her absence from the House. It is believed that she is struggling to keep her party, the YSRC in order. As most of the 26 Congress MLAs who jumped fence recently are reluctant to vote for the TRS-TDP-moved no-confidence motion, the party is in a high state of desperation. In the last meeting of MLAs, only 10 Congress MLAs supporting Jagan attended the meeting. He was expecting at least 20 MLAs, sources said. But some others close to the YSRC camp say Jagan is least worried at the numbers game now. He is preparing for the 2014 elections and the Congress is worried on that count. Kiran winning the confidence motion is not important for him, they say. It is learnt that Jagan has not assured the MLAs seats in the 2014 seats, which is why many of them shifted back to the
Congress. Meanwhile, 21 MLAs supporting Jagan met him today at noon giving him much-needed respite.

CBI chargsheets Gali in OMC case A Saye Sekhar saye@postnoon.com
The HYDERABAD: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed charge-sheets on Saturday in the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) case, meeting the 90-day deadline from the date of arrest of the main accused Gali Janardhana Reddy, former Tourism Minister of Karnataka. The CBI, which investigated into the case for more than two years, arrested Janardhana Reddy, the Managing Director of OMC BV Srinivasa Reddy and retired Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) V D Rajagopal. The CBI framed criminal charges under sections
of 120-B, 420, 409, 468 and 471 of the Indian penal Code. The charge-sheets were submitted to the Special CBI court dealing with the case in 10 boxes. However, the CBI did not file a charge-sheet against senior IAS officer, Y Srilakshmi, who was arrested and released on bail. It is learnt that the CBI wrote to the Government with regard to Srilakshmi’s alleged involvement. The OMC had allegedly indulged in illegal mining of iron ore and also illegal
export. The empowered committee of the Supreme Court conducted a detailed study on the charges against the OMC before recommending action. However, Andhra Pradesh Government ordered a CBI probe into the illegal mining by Gali Janardhana Reddy and others when K Rosaiah was the Chief Minister. The CBI arrested Gali Janardhana Reddy and B V Srinivasa Reddy were arrested by the CBI on September 4 at Bellary in Karnataka from their palatial residences. The CBI also interrogated Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy in connection with the case. The agency is likely to file additional chargesheets in the case as and when required.

“S
ave the world’s greatest computer by wearing a helmet,” says a one liner as part of traffic education campaign sponsored by the Transport department. But a group of Hyderabadis think otherwise. They want to violate the helmet rule saying that the bulky headgear invades their right to personal choice. The anti-helmet association, perhaps the only one of its kind in the world, in the city wants motorists not to wear helmets. City police are caught between the pressure groups and an order by the High Court. Strange! Citizens here are not just bothered about their own safety. Though the police tried to bring back the helmet rule, the anti-helmet associations have had the last laugh. What is more, the rule is relaxed only in the limits of Hyderabad police commission-

The city police registered only eight cases this year, while Cyberabad police fined 29,897 drivers for not wearing helmets and booked them under section 129/177 of MV Act. Ignoring the helmet rule is one of the major reasons for a large number of two-wheeler accidents resulting in fatalities. Among the 1,175 people who died in accidents, 750 were on two-wheelers and 90 per cent of them did not wear helmets. The anti-helmet associations and the general public in the city made a hue and cry saying that they were unable to see or hear with helmets on. They also accused senior police officials for conniving with helmet manufacturers. As many as four officers, who served as the additional commissioners of police (traffic), have tried their hand at bringing back the helmet rule. Even as they successfully

implemented the law and made sure that 80 per cent of two-wheeler riders wore helmets, the government relaxed it due to severe criticism. The traffic police chiefs who came in the firing line of politicians, changed their focus and priorities from helmet rule to others including underage driving, drunken driving and clearing of bottle necks, which lead to an increase in the number of fatal accidents. “We have stopped enforcing the helmet rule as we have now left the decision to the government. Whenever someine dies of head injuries, we feel bad and think that if only the rule was enforced we would have saved those precious lives. It is for their own safety we advise them to wear helmets. However, it feels good to see about 30 per cent of the citizens, mostly married men and elders wearing helmets. Problem is only with the youngsters,” said Additional CP (traffic) CV Anand.

hen Prof Ravinder Tiwari opened Takshashila institute of designing a decade ago, little did he know that his institute would gain monopoly over aspirants for designing course from the State. Today many students are assiduously preparing for the designing entrance test much like the engineering and medical students. “At the beginning, I wanted to teach them the basics of designing and create awareness. Initially, my colleague and I did it. Now the scene has changed. There is designing involved in every aspect of our life. Students are well informed and they know what they want. Today several hundred students are vying for a seat.” “I was doing engineering in Kurnool RGMCET College and then after the second year, I dropped out to prepare for National Institute Fashion Technology (NIFT),” says Deepika Gangisethy. The number of NIFT campuses have gone up from 5 to 15 in India. Recently, the HR department approved four
new campuses in Hyderabad, Bhopal, Gurgaon and Guwahati. Interestingly, none of the students preparing for the design test are from Hyderabad. They are all from different parts of the State. “I am in my final year of engineering and automobile designing is a perfect blend for me. When I registered for the coaching, I realised there were several students like me,” says Rohit Vijjapur. Vivek Rao, a cinematographer took years off and has been preparing for this exam. “I was always inclined towards designing. After working for some time, I realised that if not now, I can never pursue my passion.” “When my son first said he wanted to choose a design course over an Infosys job I was shocked. But when I saw his practice sheets, I realised how good he was and this is the industry he should be in,” says Sartaj Kaur proudly. “In Hyderabad I see the trend of designing growing by leaps and bounds. With so many IT companies, designing has a great scope here,” says Ravi Rajan, a graphic designer.

Owaisi laments, Karthika adamant The alliance partners in GHMC, the Congress and the MIM, are facing off as Congress leader and current mayor Banda Karthika Reddy has not yet vacated the mayoral office as per the agreement between the two parties and governance has suffered Md Inkeshaf Ahmed
Party-Wise Strength
ahmed.m@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: A crisis of governance has gripped the GHMC, termed the ‘second government’ of the State, as mayor B Karthika Chandra Reddy of the Congress has not yet shown inclination to vacate the chair for the sake of the ruling partner MIM. If Karthika does not resign immediately, a mid-term poll stares the City as the MIM floor leader in the Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi has declared his party will end the alliance. “I hope the mayor will resign forthwith. If not, we will break the alliance,” Owaisi told Postnoon on Friday. While the partner party and Opposition are crying foul, the unfazed mayor is busy with official programmes unmindful of the criticism.
=Congress - 52 =AIMIM- 43 =TDP-45 =BJP-5 =PRP-1 =MBT-1 =Independents- 3 The Congress and MIM which stood first and second in seat tally, had entered into an intra-party agreement to share powers each for a two-year-term with the Congress getting an extra one year towards the end. The Congress’ first two-year period has ended today. It was expected that the mayor would resign a month before the date to
facilitate elections of the new mayor and deputy mayor as the procedure would take one month to complete. The Municipal Act gives advantage to the incumbent as a no-trust vote can be moved only after three years of assuming powers. Again, to test a no-confidence motion, the mayor has to convene the general board
meeting. Recently, Owaisi had met CM Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCCI chief Botsa Satyanarayana to get back the mayoral office. While the CM did not comment, Botsa had urged the MIM to extend the term of agreement for one more year. But Owaisi had turned down the offer. “We want the Congress to honour the agreement,” Owaisi said. And he
claimed that the CM agreed on sticking to the agreement. Scores of schemes meant for the City’s improvement lie unimplemented as the GHMC general board meeting has not been convened. Meanwhile, the Opposition parties seem to gloat over the likelihood of the midterm polls as each claims it will vastly improve the tally. “Let the midterm elections come. We are prepared for it. This time around, we will definitely win 100 seats and take over the mayor’s office,” says the TDP’s floor Leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy. The BJP, so far a fringe party in GHMC is aiming at 20-25 seats of the elections are declared now. “We are waiting for mid-term elections. I will campaign for the party right now and take away at least 20 seats,” the BJP floor leader B Parakash.

The issue like plastic ban in the Corporation limits also was a flawed one. Initially the mayor had announced that there would be a blanket ban on all plastic carry products, but later it was decided to impose a ban on plastic carry bags of less than 40 microns in size due to severe criticism from all quarters.

Expenses on the rise, work declines Nearly half of parliament session lost to protests
NEW DELHI: Nearly half of parliament’s 21-day long winter session has been lost to protests mainly over foreign equity in retailing, leaving the government’s legislative agenda unsettled. With the opposition and some members of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) vociferously seeking withdrawal of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail, the stalemate over the key reform and other issues continued for the ninth day. Both houses of parliament were adjourned till Wednesday minutes after they sat after eight days of similar protests over various issues, including price rise,
Telangana and a Kerala dam. The houses will now resume sitting only on Wednesday. Parliament will have a four-day extended weekend. It was scheduled not to run on Monday, while Tuesday is a holiday on account of Muharram, the day of Muslim mourning. The current session ends on Dec 22. However, the four-day break has given the government enough time to chalk out a strategy for ending the current logjam. According to PRS Legislative Research, a policy study group, the two houses have already lost 96 hours work of the scheduled 99 hours. Which means the two
houses have sat for only three hours in the first nine days of their business. Devika Malik of PRS Legislative Research said, “Hard to predict when the logjam ends. We hope it ends on Wednesday.” Malik pointed out that there was “an elaborate legislative agenda with 22 new bills” to be settled for this session, adding, “When such a situation arises, legislation is rushed through, and there is less time spent on debating bills. Basically, parliament compromises on the time spent on debate. Since 2009, at least 17 per cent of bills were passed within five minutes.” Besides the time lost, wasting every business hour of parliament means crores of rupees in tax payers’ money going down the drain. Based on the annual budget allocation for parliament, `2.5 crore is spent on both houses every day. Accordingly, the nine days of paralysis of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha may have cost the exchequer `22.5 crore. The scenes in parliament on Friday were familiar. Presiding officers first cancelled the Question Hour to meet again at noon. They then adjourned both the houses for the day when the MPs met again amid din. IANS
Apple a day: Lok Sabha MPs to get iPads
NEW DELHI: Parliament may be in a state of paralysis these days, but it has not deterred the authorities from taking a digital leap of faith. Aiming to make its office paperless and the members tech-savvy, the Lok Sabha secretariat has sanctioned Rs50,000 for each member to buy an iPad. “We are encouraging MPs to use iPads. This would save a lot of paper,” Lok Sabha Secretary General TK Vishwanathan said. Officials said the MPs can buy either Apple iPads or Androidbased Samsung Galaxy Tabs.
Following a decision to this effect by the Lok Sabha committee on paperless office, the Lower House secretariat has also held a familiarisation drive for the MPs. According to officials, they send daily notices, e-mails, Q&As and details of proceedings to the MPs in print. Paper used for such communication can be saved if the MPs start checking out this information in a digital format using iPads, they said. “It is easier to retrieve and rearrange information in a digital format,” said Vishwanathan.
Protest against Dow: Bhopal Olympics on cards
Focus on villages to make India self-reliant: President
BHOPAL: Demanding that the London Olympic Games Committee should reject Dow Chemical’s sponsorship, five organisations working for the Bhopal gas victims today said that otherwise they would organise “Bhopal Olympics” to coincide with the London Olympics in 2012 in which the disables from Bhopal would take part. Holding protests today on the anniversary of Bhopal gas tragedy, the organisations working for the gas victims said that children with congenital disabilities caused by Union Carbide’s ‘poisons’ and Vietnamese children hurt by Dow’s ‘Agent Orange’ would partici-
PUNE: President Pratibha Patil today called upon the need to focus on the development of villages in India to make the country self-reliant. “If small and medium enterprises (SMEs), corporate sector and farmers come together, they can build a self-reliant nation, a brighter India in near future,” she said. Patil was addressing a function here, organised by the State Rural Development Ministry to felicitate the villages with ‘Paryavaran Ratna’ award for the successful implementation of government’s welfare schemes. “Country’s heart breaths in its villages. Therefore, we should concentrate on the devel-
pate in the “Bhopal Olympics”. As part of the protests against Dow Chemicals’ sponsorship of 2012 Olympics, the victims today set afire effigies of chairman of London Organising Committee for Olympic Games, Lord Sebastian Coe and Indian Olympic Association Chairman, Vijay Kumar Malhotra. The protest was organised by Bhopal Group for Information and Action, Gas Peedit Mahila Stationary Karmchari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Nirashrit Pension Bhogi Sangarsh Morcha, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Morcha and Children Against Dow PTI Chemicals.
opment of villages,” Patil said, adding, “To achieve this goal, we have to understand Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts and emphasise on the policy of recycling and reusing.” “To make any village self-
reliant, renewable energies like solar and wind can play pivotal roles. Food processing and agro-processing units should be raised in every village. This is the need of the hour.” Terming the phenomenon of global warming a “danger”, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, “State government has left no stone unturned to keep the ecological balance of the state. We are planning to plant at least 100 crore trees in a year to maintain this environmental equilibrium. This could be a little step toward the sustainable village growth.” State Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil, MP Supriya Sule were present on the PTI occasion.

‘India should be less democratic’
NEW DELHI: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad Friday said India could be China in terms of economic success if it was “less democratic” and remarked “sometimes democracy can paralyse decision-making”. “India would be like China if it was little less democratic,” Mohamad said. His remarks assume significance in the wake of the ongoing logjam in the Parliament over foreign equity in multi-brand retail, which has left the house paralysed for 9 days. He was speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here on “The Challenges of Change in the 21st Century”. The man, widely credited with making Malaysia a part of the “East Asia Miracle”, said democracy was the best form of government but it was not the easiest to govern as people did not understand the limitations of democracy. Mohamad, who transformed Malaysia from being a small rubber exporting country to an Asian tiger, said India needed a powerful federal structure with a strong centre but less powerful provincial governments to be able to make rapid economic progress. Stating that a closed market had slowed down India’s growth, he said though India has a socialist leaning it has been a democracy for a long time. “We can’t force countries to accept democracy even if it’s the best form of governance,” he said, adding that “it is important for the world to understand the limitations of democracy”.

Israel must ‘mend fences’ to end isolation: US WASHINGTON: US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta urged Israel to try and end its increasing regional “isolation” by repairing diplomatic ties with Egypt and Turkey and renewing peace efforts with the Palestinians. “Unfortunately, over the past year, we’ve seen Israel’s isolation from its traditional security partners in the region grow, and the pursuit of a comprehensive Middle East peace has effectively been put on hold,” he said. The US defense chief added that Israel was not entirely to blame for its difficult position and the US ally was the subject of an “international campaign” designed to isolate the country. Panetta said he understood Israel’s anxieties over turmoil in the Middle East but said the Arab spring offered an opportunity for the country to forge a more secure place in the region.
Tweet, tweet, it’s a Cardinal
VATICAN CITY: Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi breaks off from his rounds at the Vatican at least once a day to whip out his smartphone and shoot off a note to his followers: “Good morning, good people!” he tweets. The Vatican’s top culture man, “CardRavasi” tweets snappy quotes from the Bible, famous philosophers and dons, or passes on details about art festivals. The aim, he says, is to keep religion relevant for the younger generation. “The concise and pithy language of Twitter can teach religious communication a great deal,” Ravasi has said in interviews. His mission? To revitalise what faith means for “the children of television and the Internet”. President of the Pontifical Council for Culture since 2007,
Ravasi is keen to get priests, bishops and other cardinals to use Twitter, Internet blogs and social networking sites to bring to life the Bible’s wealth of stories. “A child today, who passes
an entire afternoon in front of a computer screen, has a different way of communicating from ours... We want to become part of the minimal, almost microscopic communication of tweets,” he said.
Humourous or serious, Ravasi’s tweets — much like the blog he writes for Italy’s Sole 24 Ore financial newspaper — often includes words of support for the country’s disaffected youth, caught in the grip of an economic crisis. He is not the only cardinal who is riding the Twitter wave. Brazilian Cardinal Odilo Scherer, American Sean Patrick O’Malley, Italian Angelo Scola and South African Wilfrid Fox Napier also tweet. Even Pope Benedict XVI has had a go at tweeting from an iPad in June. Footage on YouTube showed a bemused pope tapping on the tablet device with the aid of a cardinal, who helped the 84year-old get to grips with the Vatican’s web portal — with Twitter updates, as well as Flickr and Facebook. Getting priests to swap
increasingly empty churches for the Internet is not an easy task for an institution steeped in tradition whose official language is still Latin. The tweeting cardinals may be enthusiastic but they cannot boast many followers yet — Scherer has 7,000 while Napier only has 414 — and Ravasi says priests and nuns need to flex their digits and catch up to speed. While some critics protest that using Twitter may banalise the Church’s message, traditional preaching has no chance of competing with the colour and drama of computer games, Ravasi said at a conference in Rome. “We need to remember that communicating faith does not just take place through sermons. It can be achieved with just 140 characters,” Ravasi added.

Matters of saving and spending
Quality retail spaces will turn very costly: Pankaj Renjhen
E
nquiries for quality retail space are likely to remain robust in 2012, as major Indian retailers are on an expansion mode in major cities and also select Tier II and Tier III cities. If permitted, the foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi brand retail is expected to catalyse a lot of demand from international retailers. Both large-format and vanilla retailers are expected to chase deals in under-construction projects that provide good branding and business potential, according to a Jones Lang Lasalle forecast. Transactions will be oriented towards revenue-sharing model rather than straightforward leasing deals. Demand polarization towards select malls will continue, and this will keep overall vacancy levels high — several poorlydesigned and unfavourably located malls will become operational at low occupancy levels in 2012. Retail real estate services pertain to a specialized vertical in property consulting including evelopment advisory, lease management, tenant representation, landlord / owner representation and shopping centre management.
Against this background, Pankaj Renjhen, Managing Director, retail services, Jones Lang LaSalle India, tells K Prudhvi Raju about the growth opportunities in FDI in retail and its real estate. There are reports that the retailers would create their stores far from the high streets and city centres. What is your take? This applies to the mega stores or large hypermarkets which cannot be potentially located within the main city limits due to lack of adequate space or available space not being financially viable. In such cases, they would position themselves just off the main city in locations which nevertheless have good access to the main city. How many retail stores from
Kingfisher in talks with domestic investor
NEW DELHI: Kingfisher Airlines Chairman Vijay Mallya has said negotiations are on with a domestic investor for infusing funds in his cash-strapped airline. “That’s going on, things do take time, particularly negotiations,” Mallya told reporters on Friday when asked about talks with an Indian investor for investing in Kingfisher Airlines. He, however, did not name the investor. Kingfisher Airlines has been struggling to keep afloat as it is burdened by mounting losses
and debts. It has been cancelling several flights and also suspended operations of its budget carrier Kingfisher Red recently. Kingfisher is also struggling to meet its working capital needs, and has sought relief from lenders. It owes close to `7,060 cr to 14 banks, and they are at present assessing the viability of the airline. To a query on how talks with lenders were progressing, he said, “That’s an ongoing process in Mumbai. We are on the job, It will take whatever time it needs to take”. Kingfisher reported a net loss of `469 crore for the September quarter, though there was a 10.2 percent rise in revenues at `1,528 crore. The loss was on account of massive spike in aviation fuel prices, and inability to hike fares due to the competition. PTI
FDI, do you think would be opening up in coming years in each of the 53 cities that have been identified for the purpose? This depends on the final policy. We will see the first impact of demand coming from the existing established players, both local and international, that have presence. These will be followed by new entrants in the arena. Though there is immense interest by international players to invest in Indian retail, there is not exactly a huge line-up of brands waiting to enter over the next couple of weeks or as soon as the FDI policy is implemented. Overall, there is a cautious optimism and we will see a steady line-up of new brands and players entering over the next couple of years, rather than a mass influx of brands. What is the extent of land required to start a multi brand retail store including parking and also storage? Currently, the cash-and-ca rry format operating in India typically requires 3.5–4 acres, with a built-up area from 50,000–75,000 sqft. It could go up to 1,00,000 sqft in the near future. Hypermarkets typically require built-up areas between
35,000–70,000 sqft. Do you think there would be a need of space in villages and towns to fulfil the back end infrastructure? Yes. That will be required to support the operations. Connectivity to sourcing hubs will need to improve considerably. What do you think about the reports suggesting the retail space rentals would go up in all these cities? The impact on the prices of and demand for retail real estate will go up. Demand will rise more for well-managed, operational centres, of which there are only a few at the moment. However, the pricing of real estate will move along the same lines as the demand from the final consumers on spending in these centres or stores. If the store sees enough sales coming through, it will be willing to pay higher rentals, but may also pay a reasonable premium to get entry and block a good quality space. Real estate values and demand for retail real estate will move in tandem with the Indian consumption story, which is growing at a steady pace but not showing any sudden spikes.

BSNL to lease infrastructure and data services NEW DELHI: State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) plans to lease spare capacity of its 60,000 towers across the country to private players and push on its data offers to reduce its losses and improve its financial health, the government said Friday. “BSNL has about 60,000 towers across the country. BSNL management has decided to lease out spare capacity of its towers to other private players on commercial terms and conditions to generate incremental revenue,” Min ister of State for Commu nications and IT Milind Deora said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. The telecom operator has posted a loss of `6,384 crore for the financial year 2010-11. It is also pushing on data usage and value added services, Deora said. Among other steps taken by BSNL are strengthening of stable revenue streams through concerted focus on broadband and enterprise business with major focus on government projects. The firm is also focussing on customer care, service delivery and asset management.
ISB gets AACSB accreditation Postnoon News
HYDERABAD: The Indian School of Business (ISB) has announced its accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), making it the first business school in South Asia to be recognised by this premier global body. This acknowledgement by the oldest and longest serving global accrediting body for busi-
ness schools implies that ISB, which is celebrating a decade of its existence, now joins the exclusive league of the world’s best business schools. The AACSB accreditation has been earned by less than five percent of the world’s business schools. Ajit Rangnekar, Dean, ISB, said, “We are delighted to have received the prestigious AACSB accreditation, which is regarded as the hallmark of excellence in business education. The AACSB is unique because of its missiondriven approach, evaluating the applying schools against peer schools with
similar missions. Given our commitment to creating researchbased knowledge, and developing leaders through innovative world-class programmes, we are delighted to have this robust and independent reaffirmation of our adherence to our mission.” He added, “We are confident that this recognition will translate into increased int-erest by the international community comprising of faculty, students and recruiters, and help us chart Asia’s and India’s growth as the global management education hub.” Adi Godrej, Chairman, ISB said: “I congratulate the entire ISB community on this accomplishment. The achievement further strengthens ISB’s mission to put India on the world map of top quality management education by consolidating our global position.”

ngland will face France, Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine following Friday’s draw in Kiev. Though they must play all their games in Ukraine, having opted to base themselves in Poland, Capello’s men nevertheless have one of the easier pools on paper. “We have a balanced group, we need to play against Ukraine, one of the hosts of the tournament, and I remember them from when we played them in the qualifiers for the World Cup,” said Capello. Spain and Italy will meet in Group C — providing an imposing test for the Republic of Ireland — while Group B will comprise three past champions in Holland, Denmark and Germany as well as 2004 runnersup Portugal. “I think Group B was the worst, Group A was better,” Capello added, reflecting on
co-hosts Poland’s grouping with Greece, Russia and the Czech Republic. England will begin their campaign against rivals France, whom they have not beaten in five meetings, in Donetsk on June 11. And Capello said, “Against France will be a tough game, usually the first game is really difficult and it will be difficult for us, it will be difficult also for France. The third game will also be a difficult game.” Sweden await in Kiev on June 15 before England again travel to Donetsk four days later to tackle Ukraine. The

Assessing the tournament as a whole, Capello said: “The favourite always is Spain, they are the best team in world at the moment, difficult to beat, fantastic. Holland are also a good team and probably you can find a surprise — Portugal is one and some new teams, maybe one of the teams that host the tournament.” EVENING STANDARD

rapattoni admitted before Friday night’s draw he did not want to play the team he managed at the 2002 World Cup and European Championships in Portugal two years later. But now he knows he will, in Poznan — the final game in a group that opens with a clash against Croatia before a trip to Gdansk on June 14 for a meeting with holders and world champions Spain. “I wanted to avoid Italy because they are strong mentally and because we know each other. We knew we had to face strong opponents and I hope we don’t do ourselves harm and that we get to June 18 in a calm way,” said Trapattoni. Meeting Italy will not be a new experience. Ireland managed two draws against them in qualification for the 2010 World

Ferrari and Red Bull quit FOTA The Formula One Teams Association has been rocked by the resignation of Ferrari and Red Bull Racing amid an ongoing row over how best to reduce costs in the sport
T
he teams, two of FOTA’s most high-profile members, confirmed their intention to withdraw from the organisation on Friday afternoon, with Ferrari claiming “FOTA’s drive has run its course”. A FOTA spokeswoman confirmed the withdrawals to Press
Association Sport, saying, “I can confirm this is the case. We are trying to arrange a meeting to sit the teams around the table and see where this takes us.” Ferrari and Red Bull have been critical of FOTA’s failure to bring the teams together in agreement on the sport’s Resource Restriction Agreement (RRA), which aims to cap the spiralling costs of competing in the sport. Both teams insist that they remain committed to helping F1 reduce costs. Ferrari outlined their reasons for withdrawing from FOTA in a statement to ferrari.com, which read: “Ferrari has informed FOTA President Martin Whitmarsh that it is leaving the organisation made up of the teams competing in the Formula One World Championship. “It was a difficult decision and a great deal of thought went into it. It was taken reluctantly after analysing the current situation and the
stalemate when it came to debate on some issues that were at the core of why the association was formed. “Ferrari was on the front line in this area [cost-cutting] even before the birth of FOTA and it intends to continue down this route to ensure the sustainability of the sport in the long term. “Now, however, it is necessary to find some new impetus to move it along because FOTA’s drive has run its course, despite the excellent work of current President Martin Whitmarsh in trying to reach agreement between the various positions for the common good.” Reigning constructors’ champions Red Bull also announced their decision to withdraw in a brief statement, which read: “Red Bull Racing can confirm it has served notice to withdraw from FOTA. The team will remain committed to finding a solution regarding cost saving in Formula One.” EVENING STANDARD
Clarke ton puts Oz in charge
M
ichael Clarke’s third Test century from his past six innings steered Australia into a strong position on the third day at the Gabba, where their advantage had grown to 50 at tea, reports cricinfo.com New Zealand failed to pick up a wicket during the second session as Clarke and Brad Haddin pushed Australia past the visitors’ firstinnings total of 295 and Ross Taylor’s men desperately need to
break the stand after the break. Clarke was on 139 and Haddin had made 47 as Australia moved on to 5 for 345, having added 91 in the session. New Zealand’s problems were compounded when they lost their wicketkeeper Reece Young, who left the field with a bleeding nose after he couldn’t get his gloves to a Daniel Vettori delivery that turned and bounced much more than he expected, forcing Brendon McCullum to
take over behind the stumps. It was a disappointing session all round for New Zealand, who continued to give opportunities to Australia’s captain. After he was bowled off a no-ball on the second day and dropped by Young on 85 on the third morning, Clarke was again grassed at third slip by Jesse Ryder when he had reached 105 after lunch — all three of the lives having coming off the bowling of Doug Bracewell. Clarke had gone to lunch on 99 and brought up his hundred in the first over after the break with a wonderful straight drive for four off Bracewell. By the end of the session, Clarke had taken his batting average as Test
Clarke and Brad Haddin pushed Australia past the visitors’ first-innings total of 295 captain past 50, and he was in with a chance of posting his highest Test score, and, more importantly, help build a hefty lead for his country. Without Mitchell Johnson, Australia’s tail is longer than usual, with Peter Siddle to come in at No 8, but until New Zealand can break the ClarkeHaddin stand, the lower order is irrelevant. Haddin had struck five
boundaries and was on target for his second consecutive Test half-century. It was a strong response after New Zealand picked up two wickets in the first session as Ricky Ponting missed the chance for a hundred and Michael Hussey departed cheaply. On 78, Ponting was adjudged lbw to Chris Martin, and did not survive the review either, while Hussey’s lean trot since his wonderful tour of Sri Lanka continued when he inside edged onto his pad and was caught at short leg off Vettori for 15. But the runs kept coming from Clarke, who had brought up his half-century with a powerful straight six off Vettori.

Exploring complexities

hey say, ‘Two’s company’, but new age couples would rather make it one less and are happy with the single-child norm. Madhu Pandit, a housewife and mother of a five-year-old, is content and does not intend to have more kids. “I always had it in mind to have only one child and not more. It was a conscious decision as you can pay more attention to your child. Also, in the present scenario, it becomes a little difficult to handle the needs of more than one child. I make sure I give enough time to my child and bring him up in the right way so he doesn’t feel lonely,” she shares. Actor Rohit Roy, father to nine-year-old Kiara, however feels it is important to have siblings even though the couple is not sure if they want a second child. “There are many reasons why we chose to have a single child; one being that I can devote my entire time and attention to my daughter. Having said that, I believe that a child always needs company and if it is a nuclear family the child tends to become all the more lonely and friends are not always the best option. Thankfully, I have my nephews and nieces around, so my daughter always has company of kids her age. I understand the value of a sibling as I have grown up with a brother and I cherish the times we have spent together and still know who to turn to for anything,” shares the doting father. Actor Manini De, mother of a 12-year-old daughter from her previous marriage feels that although it’s very important for a woman to realise motherhood at the same time one should consider having a second child only when she is ready to give enough attention to her child in the midst of work in this competitive world. “Every woman wants to experience motherhood but at the same you should also understand when one is ready to take that pressure or burden.” Explaining why she used the word burden, she says, “Pardon me for using the word burden but although motherhood is the most beautiful, it is physically and psychologically very taxing for a woman to go through this phase. Other than that, one needs to
make sure they can give as much time and love to the second child as well. Personally, I have invested a lot of time in making my career and I am not sure if at this stage I am ready to add one more responsibility and it’s not fair if I bring that child into this world whom I’m not able to fully take care of. It’s better not to have another child and be an irresponsible parent,” she says emphatically. Adding to that, Rohit says, “The decision is mainly my wife’s as I believe it’s a woman who really brings up the child and at one point in life one comes to a level where you finally think of making the decision whether you finally want another child and we might be on that stage. You never know, we might think of another one but nothing on cards right now.” Dr Phani Prashant, a clinical psychologist, feels it is very important for the parents to understand the needs and spend quality time with the child. If brought up in a right manner, single child or more, both are fine, but with couples choosing to bring only one child the right kind of upbringing is very important. Normally we see there is a lot of pampering and extra attention that is being showered on the child as parents tend to become over protective. There are also chances that the child cannot stand extra pressure or tension since he has been in an over protective environment.” Although for some it has been more of a compulsion than a matter of choice. Lubna Ehsan, a housewife had to be content with a single child but is not in favour of it personally. “I don’t believe in this ideology, as the child suffers. My son keeps cribbing about being alone and not having any companion to play with other than his friends. He child misses that sibling bonding and I believe the sharing is very important when they are growing up,” laments Lubna. Nowadays, with both parents earning or not, couples chose to go the single-child way. The reasons are varied. Yet, on the other hand there are parents who feel that having one child will make them lonesome so they prefer to have two or more children. However, how each child turns out to be really depends on how the child has been brought up, among other factors.

Taking the Volkswagen Sharan 2.0 for a ride The last Volkswagen Sharan was best known for its classy, roomy and versatile cabin and the fact it was good to drive
N
ow there's a new Sharan, but with smaller rivals offering similar practicality and the sister car, the SEAT Alhambra, being so similar, why should you go for the Volkswagen? I spent a week with a £27,540 (without options) Sharan 2.0 TDi 140 SE BlueMotion to find out. Upmarket, tall, functional and sensible probably best sum up the Sharan's exterior styling. Not the best-looking multipurpose vehicle (MPV), but it looks neatest from the front, where the Sharan's different headlights, grille and front airdam in my opinion, make it look a lot sleeker than the Alhambra. Move to the side and the Sharan's flanks are dominated by the massive windows and the rear sliding doors. Whilst at the back, there's a large set of rear light clusters and the huge rear window Inside the Sharan, there's the usual sturdy, logically laid out dashboard that you expect from a Volkswagen. Move to the rear of the Sharan cabin and the tall styling
means there's plenty of head and legroom for five adults. The cleverest design feature of the Alhambra and Sharan has to be the way the rear rows of seats fold into the floor, so there's no need to remove them. The Sharan is incredibly spacious inside, with just the third row of seats folded into the floor, boot space is an excellent 658 litres. This grows to a vanlike 2,297 litres with all the seats folded. During the time I had the
Sharan, I used it for a family holiday. I found there was more than enough room for four adults, my son and all of our luggage, with room to spare. The most family-friendly feature of the Sharan has to be the large twin sliding rear doors, which were optionally poweroperated (£635) on the test car and made getting my baby boy in and out of the back very easy. I also appreciated the optional power-operated boot (£495), which made loading and
unloading much easier. Our test car was in midrange SE trim which has all the equipment you're ever likely to need and includes: climate control, front and rear parking sensors and electric windows. The pricey, optional touch-screen navigation/CD system (£1,910) stereo sounded great and the map quality was excellent. So, what's the Sharan like to drive? The 2.0-litre TDi diesel engine might have just 138bhp and as such, with the tall body acceleration is a bit laboured (62mph comes up in 10.9 seconds and the top speed is 121mph). Still, with 236lb-ft of torque, once it's on the move it feels quite sprightly. Our test car had six-speed manual transmission, which was reasonably slick with a light, progressive clutch. Our holiday consisted of a
mixture of motorway runs and town driving and despite the fact that it is a big MPV, all the BlueMotion tweaks meant it proved to be quite frugal and averaged around 30mpg. This is helped by the standard-fit startstop system. Even fully loaded, the Sharan's ride was comfortable with only the biggest road imperfections making their way into the cabin. I wasn't expecting the sharp, precise steering, which helps to make the driving experience more involving. However, it seems at odds with the safe, but not sporty handling. There's plenty of body roll in corners; still it is an MPV! To sum up, I think that the Sharan is a brilliant, if expensive family car (our test car with options was over £30,000!). EVENING STANDARD
AUDI TO EXPAND TO CHINA FOR THE NEW AUDI A3 I
n the upcoming years, Audi will execute its expansion plan in China to reach a production rate of 700,000 vehicles annually. Starting in 2013, a new plant in the southern city of Foshan will build the A3 compact. In a statement last Thursday, Audi said that around 3 billion euros ($4 billion) will be
invested by the FAW-VW joint venture for the production and distribution of the Audi brand in China over the next five years. Audi has a stake in the FAW-VW joint venture together with Volkswagen and the Chinese partner FAW. A company spokeswoman said that the brand could
currently build around 300,000 vehicles in Changchun, where Audi A4, A6 and Q5 models are assembled. Audi predicts that its sales (including imported models such as the A8 saloon) would reach a record-breaking 300,000 vehicles this year. Audi said that the new
plant in Foshan, in the southern province of Guangdong, could produce about 150,000 to 200,000 cars starting in 2013, contributing to output from the plant in Changchun which will be increased to as high as 550,000 cars. Audi added that this new plant will have about 4,000 workers and will make a
"new member" of the A3 compact line, the No. 3 model in terms of sales. Sales in China of premium cars have surged with the increasing wealth standards and the exceedingly assertive middle class. This makes China the most significant growth market for Audi as well as Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Renowned artist creates mosaic out of million coffee beans
S
aimir Stari, one of the world’s most famous mosaic artists, is working on yet another mind-blowing masterpiece, this time using approximately one million coffee beans. The Albanian artist known for creating largescale art pieces made with the most unusual art mediums (from cork screws and toothpicks to paintbrushes) has recently started work on another massive mosaic, this time made of coffee beans. Entitled “One World, One Family, One Coffee”, the original mosaic features five characters, each representing a different continent. As you might have guessed, the objective of Strati’s work is to inspire a sense of unity across the world. The patient artist is painstakingly working on his one million coffee beans mosaic in Tirana, Albania, and plans on completing the project on December 12. When finished, his unique artwork will measure 25 square meters and weigh 140 kilograms. As with his other impressive mosaic, Saimir Strati will most likely set a new Guinness record with his coffee bean project.

rug testing is common in almost all schools across America. Testing positive could be devastating for kids, because it could mean getting kicked off a sports team or other important events. Students have always devised new methods to pass the test, and the latest according to the Sheriff’s Office of Mobile County, Alabama, is bleach. Yes, teens are actually ingesting bleach in the hope that it will purge any traces of drugs that they have consumed. While there are several products advertised on the internet that claim to help wash away drugs from the system in the form of drinks, chewable tablets, etc., teenagers seem to be throwing caution and common sense to the wind, looking no further than the kitchen sink. According to Sergeant Joe Mahoney, the Sheriff’s office has seen cases where kids have ingested straight bleach that caused significant damage to the body. Considering the fact that household bleach is strong enough to strip odors, stains and chemicals off fabrics and other surfaces, it’s scary to even think of what it could do inside a human body. Mahoney warns kids that damage to the body organs is all that can be accomplished from the consumption of bleach. Drug testing techniques have gotten quite sophisticated, and there are ways to detect the presence of drugs in the system despite these precautionary measures.

Men are three times more likely than women to develop a common form of skin cancer but medical science doesn’t know why. A new study may provide part of the answer
Less antioxidants explains higher skin-cancer in males R esearchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Centre — Arthur G James Cancer Hospital and Richard J Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC — James) have found that male mice had lower levels of an important skin antioxidant than female mice and higher levels of certain cancer-linked inflammatory cells. The antioxidant, a protein
called catalase, inhibits skin cancer by mopping up hydrogen peroxide and other DNAdamaging reactive-oxygen compounds that form during exposure to ultraviolet B light (UVB), a common source of sunburn and cancer-causing skin damage. Studies by others have linked low catalase activity to skin cancer progression. The research is published online in the Journal of
Investigative Dermatology. The findings suggest that women may have more natural antioxidant protection in the skin than men,” say study coleaders Gregory Lesinski and Tatiana Oberyszyn, both of the OSUCCC — James. “As a result, men may be more susceptible to oxidative stress in the skin, which may raise the risk of skin cancer in men compared to women,” says
To make kids eat more vegetables
T
here's an existential crisis that often happens at dinner tables across the country: why won't kids eat their vegetables? Research has found that one reason could be sensitivity to bitterness, fairly common among children — about 70 per cent have it. But a new study led by Jennifer Orlet Fisher, director of the Family Eating Laboratory at Temple's Centre for Obesity Research and Education, has found that adding a small amount of dip to a serving of vegetables helped bitter-sensitive children eat more of them. The study, published online in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, studied 152 pre-school aged children in the Head Start programme who
were served broccoli at snack time over a 7-week period, and found that offering 2.5 ounces of ranch dressing as a dip increased broccoli consumption by 80 per cent among bittersensitive children. Low-fat and regular versions were tested, and both were equally effective. "We know that children can learn to like vegetables if they are offered frequently, without
prodding and prompting," said Fisher. "Children with sensitivity to bitterness may avoid certain vegetables, but offering a lowfat dip could make it easier for those foods to become an accepted part of children's diet." She added that parents don't necessarily need to stick to dressings high in fat and salt to see a positive effect. "Try applesauce, hummus, or a low-fat yogurt-based dip for more calcium," she suggested. "Parents and caregivers do not make laboratory measurements of children's bitter sensitivity, but most will know if their child is wary of vegetables," said Fisher. "Our research shows that offering dip is another tool that parents can use to help children learn to eat their vegetables."
Lesinski, an assistant professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics. The study also found that UVB exposure caused a unique inflammatory white blood cell population called ‘myeloidderived suppressor cells’ to migrate from the bone marrow into the exposed skin. Furthermore, higher numbers of these cells moved into the skin of male mice than female mice.
15
“To our knowledge, we’ve shown for the first time that UVB exposure causes a migration of systemic myeloidderived suppressor cells, and it suggests that these cells might be a novel source of UVBinduced immune suppression,” says first author Nicholas Sullivan, a research scientist in the Oberyszyn lab in the Department of Pathology. This, in turn, might mean that these UVB-induced inflammatory cells contribute to the genesis of skin tumours and perhaps other tumours rather than simply facilitating cancer progression, as generally thought, Sullivan notes. Normally, the body mobilizes the suppressor cells to limit immune responses to infection, sepsis or trauma so that healing can begin, Lesinski says. “However, in the cancer setting, repeated UV light exposure or after other chronic or repeated inflammatory stimuli, these cells persist and become immunosuppressive,” he says. “They can render helpful immune cells such as T cells or natural killer cells unable to recognise and eliminate cancer cells in the skin.” Lesinski and colleagues conducted the study using a strain of hairless mice that develops squamous cell carcinoma of the skin — the second-most common skin cancer in humans — when exposed to UVB. Investigators also found that treating mice with topical catalase inhibited the migration of the suppressor cells into UVBexposed skin, suggesting that the influx of these cells in males might be due to the relatively lower skin-catalase activity.

We should be sleeping on the
problem of insomnia Dr Christian Jessen
I
’ve just come back from a two-week filming trip across America, from California on the West Coast all the way across, via Ohio, to New York in the East. Needless to say, my body clock is completely up the spout and despite going to bed reasonably early I’m still lying wide awake at 4am. Most irritating. Add to that the fact that I don’t sleep well in hotel rooms, with their strange noises, odd-shaped pillows and unworkable air conditioning, and you won’t be surprised to hear that the symptoms of sleep deprivation are really beginning to show. I have certainly developed a lot more sympathy for insomniacs. While I hope my nighttime wakefulness is only temporary, chronic lack of sleep can have serious
implications for our health. Recently published results show that 51 per cent adults struggle to get to or remain asleep. Women seem to suffer far more than men, with 75 per cent reporting problems, compared with 25 per cent of men. It is highly likely that persistently poor sleep increases the risk of developing new illnesses such as diabetes, and there are clear links to depression. In a study of 10,000 people, those with insomnia were five times as likely to develop depression as those without. Sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex, and sleep even plays a role in weight regulation. Lack of sleep seems to be related to an increase in hunger and appetite, and possibly obesity. People who sleep less than six hours a day are
Sleep-deprived individuals report lower libidos and less interest in sex, and sleep plays a role in weight regulation almost 30 per cent more likely to become obese than those who sleep more. This may be because sleep deprivation stimulates cravings for high-fat, highcarbohydrate foods, and studies are under way to see whether adequate sleep should be a standard part of weight loss programmes. It is sobering to think that sleep deprivation was a factor in some of the biggest disasters in recent history, including the nuclear accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl and the Exxon Valdez oil spill. But even on a smaller
scale, drowsiness can slow reaction times to those of a drunk driver, and is responsible for a significant number of road deaths, particularly in the under-25s. It’s a strange fact of our modern lives that functioning on less sleep has become a kind of badge of honour and something to aspire to. Yet research has shown that if you think you’re doing fine on less sleep, you’re almost certainly wrong. For people who work in professions where it is important to be able to judge their level of functioning, this can be a big problem and should cause us to question the hours worked by junior doctors. This is clearly an issue we need to take more seriously. In the US they deal with these problems better: nearly every gadget or gift shop I went into sold sleep aid devices, the most popular being noise generators that mask external sounds and induce sleep. I shall certainly be investing in one for my next trip. EVENING STANDARD
Women are more prone to anaemia
Dr Suneetha Sapur
I am 18 years old and I feel very tired, weak, and look pale. My doctor told me that I am anaemic. What type of food will help to increase by haemoglobin levels? Please suggest an appropriate diet for me. Almost 75 per cent of Indians suffer with anaemia especially iron deficiency related anaemia and women are much more prone to this. Iron deficiency during pregnancy increases maternal mortality and low birth weight in the new born. In children, it increases susceptibility to infection and impairs learning ability. This is due to various reasons like diet is poor in iron rich foods, having intestinal worms, or some problem in the absorption of iron. For the formation of haemoglobin, you need proteins, vitamin C and also iron. So your diet should be rich in these nutrients. Plant foods like green leafy vegetables, legumes and dried fruits contain iron. But the absorption of iron from plant source is poor in comparison with animal foods. Meat, fish and poultry products are good source of iron, protein too. Include any food item rich in Vitamin C which improve the absorption of iron, so include fruits rich in vitamin C like gooseberries (amla), guava and citrus fruits. Do not drink tea after you meal because it hinders the absorption of iron. Hence, they should be avoided before, during or soon after a meal. Use iron utensils for cooking which will provide the elemental iron in your diet. Before starting the diet, please consult the doctor to check for worm infestation. Deliciously Dirty! A movie must have three things — entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. The Dirty Picture is all that and so much more
Movie Cast
: Dirty picture : Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Director : Milan Luthria Rating :
R
eshma is your regular, small-town girl with glamourous stardom dreams and an equally strong passion to stir her on. She ends up in Chennai and after the usual struggle and rejections, she is discovered by faulty chance. She gets her first break as a sensuous item girl in a movie’s song sequence and Silk is born. Her thumkas and her bouncing love handles are the talk of the
town and it is what every man in the audience is paying to watch. Her lovers and her fans increase by a ten-fold but its not easy being a feisty item girl with a bold fervour and a tongue that never stays still. The story sort of drags in the second half but raunchy, in-your-face dialogues written by Rajat Arora make up. The screenplay does have a few loopholes, which lacks character development — be it Vidya’s
birth mother or Ratnamma, who takes her in when she moves to Chennai or even her adolescent fan who stalks and lusts after her. The song Ooh la la sung by Bappi Lahiri is already playing on loop on many an ipod while the movie splendidly uses the rollicking Tamil ditty Naka mukka in different scenes. The Dirty Picture truly is Vidya Balan’s movie all the way. Whether she is cracking crude
innuendos or getting away with her unapologetic behaviour by jutting out her ample bosom, bursting out at the seams, Vidya has essentially raised the bar. Naseeruddin Shah, with his ridiculous getups has promisingly conveyed the role of a narcissistic lusty old timer of the ‘80s. Tusshar’s role of a feeble writer, trying to be manned up with a thick moustache fails entirely and he is better off
doing mute roles like the one in Golmaal. Emraan does justice to his role. In the first half of the movie, Emraan is an ambitious director who fails to fall prey to the sleaziness of Silk, hates her while the second half of the movie shows him giving in to her charms. On the whole The Dirty Picture is a must-watch if you are looking for two-and-a-half hours of entertainment. SANA MIRZA

Vidya has received positive reviews for her portrayal of a 1980s’ dancing star in the Ekta Kapoor film, in which she features opposite Tusshar Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi and Naseeruddin Shah. The story is said to have been inspired by the life of southern sex siren Silk Smitha, hence, De refers to Vidya as ‘Silk Balan’, in IANS appreciation of her work.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
