THANK YOU, TOLKIEN

On September 2, 1973, the world lost one of its finest storytellers. But years on, JRR Tolkien’s novels continue to inspire writers, artists, filmmakers and lovers of fantasy. Without him, literature would not have been the same. We bring his world to life once again.

TDP cashes in on BCs

Naidu is planning a two-day tour to the national capital to raise the issue of negligent attitude of the State government towards the BCs. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

A

fter creating a scramble among political parties in the State by announcing an exclusive declaration for the Backward Class community, the main opposition, TDP has now turned its focus to the national level. The party is planning to cash in on the BC issue by raising it in New Delhi and gather support for its proposed declaration for Backward Classes, who constitute about 50 per cent of the total population in Andhra Pradesh. In order to achieve its aim, party president Chandrababu

Naidu is visiting the national capital on a two-day tour on September 5 and 6. The main objective of this tour is to meet the heads of political parties like CPM, CPI, Samajwadi party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Janata Dal and seek their support in their fight to empower the BC Community. During his two day visit, Naidu is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to request him to constitute a separate ministry for backward classes. Commenting on the issue, TDP senior leader L Ramana told Postnoon that it was the Telugu Desam which has always fought for the rights of BCs since its inception in

1982. Stressing on the need for providing more representation for the BCs, he said that the party had come up with a declaration exclusively meant for them. He alleged that BCs and their welfare schemes have been grossly neglected during the rule of Congress-led State government. “I can proudly say that our party had always supported the development of BCs in the State. We initiated a lot of schemes for them during our tenure. But there is a strong to need to provide more representation for the community as they constitute 50 per cent of our population. Our declaration is a step towards achieving this goal,” he said.

Stop illegal pvt buses: RTC workers

R

TC Workers Union, affiliated to Bahujana Karmik Sahasabha, has demanded the State government to stop illegal operations of private buses, to save the RTC from losses. Union honorary president B Ramaswamy, State president P Subhash and general secretary AV Raju, said that the RTC is on its death bed, with huge losses, as seen from newspaper reports, and hence they have decided to strive for its protection. Out of a total of 1.50 lakh employees, the SCs, STs, BCs and minorities constitute 80 per cent and hence they have taken it upon themselves to protect the RTC. They have decided to work one day extra in a month, to save the Corporation, and also work for the welfare of the workers. NSS

Available, but forgotten: The sorry state of MMTS. While 70 per cent of Hyderabadis use public transport, braving crowded buses and moody auto drivers, few seem to remember that the MMTS exists and is an efficient mode of transport.

2

‘Sport of Kings’ finds few takers in the City. Though a major polo tournament is held in Hyderabad every year, few seem interested in the sport, deterred mainly by the cost.

3

Pay attention if you don’t want to get fleeced. The next time you get fuel filled at a petrol bunk, keep a close watch on the meter to ensure that fuel attendants don’t shortchange you.

An acquittal does not restore normalcy. Two years after being falsely arrested in the Mecca Masjib blast case, youngsters are still trying to shake off the ‘terrorist’ tag.

customer, Ashwin Siddaramaih, gives tips to avoid being scammed. n After you stop in front of the pump, get out of the car. n Stand near the fuel tank & tell the attendant how much fuel you want. n If the pump has a keypad to enter amount of fuel in litres/value, ask the attendant to punch in the value & not just pump directly. n Ensure that the meter shows zero. If the attendant is in a hurry, ask him to wait for zero. n Keep your eyes on the nozzle, ask the attendant to remove his hands from the nozzle since the pump auto stops after punched-in value has been pumped. n Ensure the value is displayed on the gauge before you pay.

H

ere is how you can make a quick buck. One — get employed as a gas jockey at a fuel station. Two — learn how to distract customers in the most subtle manner possible, thereby ensuring that your scam goes undetected. Three — a setting with the bunk manager will do the rest. If one were not diligent and aware of their responsibilities as a customer (which include being vigilant and staying focused on the fuel meter), you are very likely to be taken for a ride. While filling fuel, the gas jockeys (fuel attendants) tend to distract you using various diversionary tactics (asking if your payment is by cash or card, whether you would like a service membership, refilling air in tyres). If you don't pay attention, the amount of fuel being pumped into your vehicle could be far less than what you have asked for. Normally, the fuel nozzle resets the meter to zero upon filling the required amount. But this works to the advantage of attendants, who easily avoid the statutory “ensure zero before delivery” rule. Prashant Narayan, a resident of Begumpet says, “ When you ask for `500 worth of petrol, they fill in only `200. If you realise what has happened and question them, they promptly apologise and fill in the remaining amount of `300 of fuel without resetting the fuel meter to zero. Which means, you get fuel filled in from `200 to `300, i.e. only `100, which equals to only `300 of total fuel. With this gimmick, they easily shave `200 off your pocket.” So how does the scam go undetected? “It happens when there is a long line of vehicles

waiting to be filled. Especially if the customer is in a car, they tend to distract you by asking your preferred method of payment or tyre servicing. Sometimes, it happens that the customer does not bother to check the meter because of the heavy rush at the petrol bunks,” says Vinay Sharma, an engineering student. In a single day recce, over 18 petrol bunks were found indulging in this mischief. What aids these attendants is that a majority of the crowd does not ask for bills after fuelling. All cash saved through the gimmick goes unaccounted for. Moreover, not many petrol bunks offer complaint boxes or managers who sort out the

problem. Once fuel is filled, it is impossible to figure out whether you have been cheated. And before you can raise objections, you are mostly asked to exit because of the huge line behind you. According to the legal metrology department, 453 cases were booked in Hyderabad in 2010 against fraudulent attendants under the Standards of Weights and Measurements Enforcement Act. Most of these cases were settled out of court as they involved petty disputes over a few hundred rupees and because customers were reluctant to demand justice. This year, neither the consumer court nor the legal

metrology department have seen any such cases filed. “We have not received any complaints so far regarding this issue but yes, this is a common practice among many to scam customers. They should be careful while the fuel is being filled and should always encourage electronic billing systems that are linked with the fuel pump,” says Krishna Reddy, a fuel pump manager at Tadbund. Through this scam, attendants make hundreds of rupees everyday by maintaining a clear account of how much petrol they had shaved off customers. It has been witnessed that their “cut” is separately accounted with the managers, who are most often hand-in-glove with them.

HUMAN RIGHTS

‘I’m not a terrorist’

Two years after being acquitted for their alleged involvement in the Mecca Masjid blast, several youngsters are struggling to regain some semblance of normalcy in their lives. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

“I

am a well educated man, but nobody will give me a job, thanks to the ‘terrorist’ tag that I now have to live with. Ever since I was arrested in connection with the Mecca Masjid blast my life has been ruined. Although the court has acquitted me, the stigma remains,” says Syed Imran Khan, a BTech graduate. Imran, along with 30 others had been arrested on charges of terrorist activity after the Mecca Masjid blast in 2007. However, all of them were later acquitted by the court and the government promised them an ex-gratia and assured jobs. However, to date only six of those falsely implicated in the blast have received the ex-gratia amount. “I have not received any exgratia, nor do I have a job, despite the government announcement. My life is completely ruined now. Nobody is willing to give me a job thanks to the terrorist tag. It’s even harder to find a suitable match for marriage. Our relatives and friends choose to ignore us and my parents prefer staying home due to the guilt. However, the worst outcome of this whole fiasco has

been that my sister got divorced due to my arrest,” says Imran. Others like him face a similar fate. They have been socially ostracised, don’t have jobs, cannot get married and are looked down upon by their own relatives and friends. Some of those who had been arrested and then acquitted include; Moutasim Billah son of Moulana Abdul Aleem Islahi, Shoaib Jagirdar from Jalna, Mohd Abdul Majeed brother of Shahid Bilal, Shaik Abdul Kaleem, Mohd Rayees,

Maqsood, Shakeel, Abdul Raoof Imran and Gulam Aslam Siddique. “The government is never going to learn from its mistakes and we have to take action against them. There should be strict laws about arresting somebody like this. Despite being acquitted in 2010, we still can’t shake off the stigma,” Moutaism Billah who recently wrote his MTech exam. He further added, “I don’t want the ex-gratia amount. The money doesn’t mat-

ter to me, which is why I didn’t even apply for compensation. What I want is justice. Thanks to this terrorist tag it’s difficult for me to resume a normal life.” Incidentally, it was Shaik Abdul Kaleem who was instrumental in bringing reprieve to those who were falsely implicated in the blast case. While in prison, he was sharing his tale of misery with another prisoner, Swamy Asimanand. During the course of their talk, Kaleem revealed how they were victims

Youngsters take oath against dowry Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com

S

everal college students took an oath not to accept or offer dowry while choosing their life partners and to ‘boycott’ marriages where this social evil is involved. After an elocution competition on ‘Why is dowry illegal? How can we stop this evil?’ was organised by Socio Reforms Society of India at FAPCCI, around 100 youngsters below the age of 25 pledged to spread the message. Girls participated with overwhelming zeal, because of the implications it would have on their lives. The men promised that they would convince their parents not to accept or ask for dowry. While many spoke of experiences their close relatives faced, others focused on the societal repercussions of the practice, which is still widespread. Amrutha Vallabhaneni, a participant, pointed out that 80 per cent of the loans are for dowry. She

highlighted how dowry deaths remained just statistics. Quoting an Amnesty report, she noted that 25,000 women are killed each year because of the practice in India. Another participant, Aaliya Fatima, lamented how blessings were turning out to be a curse for the bride, because of ineffective implementation of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. M Sucharita blamed the social evil for the high rates of female infanticide among

Indians. The boys were also vehemently against dowry. Syed Abdur Rahim, noted one instance where a proud father presented `1 crore as dowry and 100 tolas of gold at his daughter’s marriage. “What is the guarantee that his daughter will be happy ever after,” he asked. Participants also expressed concern on how dowry deaths have become common in the country, where women are ‘revered’. Female infanticide is also on the rise because parents are worried about being able to pay dowry. The president of the society, Aleem Khan Falaki, revealed that 85 per cent population was suffering due to the whims and fancies of 10 or 15 per cent of society. In Hyderabad alone, he said, `15,000 crore was being spent each year by Muslims alone for 50,000 marriages. Without the huge loans, it is impossible to pay for such extravaganza, he added.

of police atrocities. It was at this point that Asimanand confessed that there were no Muslims behind the Mecca Masjid blast, but a Hindu group. It was following his confession that the trial turned in the favour of those who had been falsely arrested. Despite, his role in bringing forth the truth, Kaleem too has not yet received the ex-gratia amount or a job. “We are facing several financial problems. But we have not received any help from the government. We are waiting for justice,” he said. Similarly, Mohd Rayees lost his job with a City-based jewellery shop following his arrest. After he was released he had to take loans from different people to start his own shop. However, the business failed and now he is in a dilemma. “Every time there is some terrorist activity, the police come and take us for questioning,” Rayees said. In a similar case Maqsood, Shakeel, Gulam Aslam Siddique and others are also waiting for a compensation from the government for some rehabilitation. Most of them belong to poor and middle class families and don’t have reliable sources of income. Thanks to the arrests, they lost what jobs they had and stand slim chances of getting new ones.

TRANSPORT

City’s transport system fails to solve commuting woes With a burgeoning population, expanding boundaries and quickening pace of life, commuting has become a day-to-day nightmare. But are we utilising all our means of public transport? PADMINI C AND SUDESHNA KOKA feedback@postnoon.com

N SHIVA KUMAR

E

ven a few years ago, Hyderabad was a City that prided itself on being a place where people could go from one place to another without having to set aside two hours as travel time. Needless to say, this has changed. The 2011 census reveals that Hyderabad’s population has grown from 3,829,753 in 2001 to 40,10,238 in 2011. Among many of the problems this exponential rise poses for the City, the single-most daunting concern for urbanites now is commuting. Estimates show that the number of vehicles on the roads have multiplied from 10.9 lakh in 2001 to 18.4 by 2007. The numbers have no doubt tripled since then. Industry experts say, as many as 600 new vehicles hit the City roads every day. Traffic woes are endless. Lack of civic sense, pollution levels, unruly pedestrians, hawkers and peddlers, bad roads, beautification projects, overcrowded buses and demanding auto drivers are all threatening our sanity.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT WOES

It doesn’t come as news that over 70 per cent of Hyderabad travels by public transport. A majority of this population travels by buses. At last count, APSRTC had over 4,000 buses in the City. But ask any local and they will tell you, it’s not enough. “On paper, they say there are x number of buses. But in reality, only half of them are on the road. So even though buses are economical, they are extremely crowded, especially during peak hours. Some of them don’t even stop. To make things worse they are not punctual and so at times we end up waiting for almost an hour,” rues engineering student, Meghana Reddy. If those who take the bus consider it traumatic, they should take heart for the victims of the auto raj. “U-turn. Rain. Traffic. Won’t get passen-

here’s a palatable amount of interest in the upcoming Metro project in the twin cities. But the already existing MMTS remains ignored as a convenient, economical, speedy mode of transport. In the next week, Postnoon will bring you a series on what ails the MMTS. We’ll talk to its loyalists and its critics. We’ll seek answers for why the railway service is such an alien concept to a majority of commuters in the City. If it’s truly inconvenient or simply under-utilised. Most importantly, we’ll find out if, or not, the MMTS is a viable alternative to other means of public transport in the City.

There’s no end to the excuses auto drivers will come up with to fleece you. “Gone are the days when the place mattered, now it’s all about the price. rowdy, argumentative, demanding and out of control. No one’s doing anything about it. If not anything else, we need a Meter Down movement similar to the one that was held in Mumbai. This can’t go on,” says a hassled Sri Kamalam, an IT employee who is at her wits end, trying to get back home

In 2003, the Indian Railways put together a project that sought to alleviate traffic congestion in the City. The completed Phase I of the Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS), costing `178 crore, has been active ever since. Today, it runs 121 services a day, covering 27 stations, connecting Secunderabad, Falaknuma and Lingampally over the existing railway network. For a number of reasons, real and perceived, the project never caught public fancy. It is estimated that only 1.6lakh people avail the facility even today. In fact, it was owing to “poor patronage,” that the Phase II of MMTS Hyderabad was said to have been delayed multiple times. Until now, that is. The Union government has recently given the go-ahead for the Phase II, estimated to cost `632.68 crore, which will connect new lines including Falaknuma-International airport, Sanath Nagar — Mouli Ali among others.

the tournament will witness four events being held namely, The Bison Cup, The Army Commander’s Cup, The Chief Minister’s Cup and The Prince of Berar Cup. The sport which is also known as the “Sport of Kings” has been played in Hyderabad since many years. Though the army conducts the event every year, it is still not a well known sport . Being a costly sport, it does not have many takers. “This is because of the cost as well as the lack of exposure. Like many other sports in the country, even polo needs its share of encouragement,” rued one of the organisers. In their bid to do their bit, the organisers of the Hyderabad Polo season are trying their best to see that the public are able to witness the matches by making entry for the matches free-for-all. Also, with the likes of Samir Suhag being given the Arjuna award, their seems to be a new found ray of hope for the sport.

PIONEERS AND ARCH-RIVALS

Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp are commonly regarded as the three artists who most defined the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics.

THE ART OF THE MATTER

WAS HE WRONG?

STOCKHOLM: The title "He Was Wrong" of the exhibition is based on Picasso's reputed laconic remark on learning of Duchamp's death in 1968. The exhibition is a "theatrical" posthumous meeting of the two greats, museum curator Daniel Birnbaum said of the pair who each had a famous dislike for the other's works and who never met. The Moderna Museet has a fine collection of works by the two influential artists often described as rivals and incompatible, with Picasso the prolific painter and Duchamp the conceptual creator who challenged painting as an art form. But the museum has never before organised a showing of their oeuvres side by side. "There is really a difference between Duchamp's detachment and Picasso's subjectivity. When these two things come together, it doesn't go very well," exhibition curator Ronald Jones told AFP. "Picasso is the great painter, and the other is the one who questioned the very nature of an artwork," Birnbaum added. The first room of the exhibition is a large hall adorned with giant portraits of the two artists facing each other: Picasso with a bull mask covering his head in an Edward Quinn photograph, and Duchamp with his face covered in shaving cream and tufts of hair protruding like horns, shot by Man Ray. Also in the room, Picasso's 1912 collage Bottle, Glass and Violin faces off against Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel from 1913. It's the only room where their work is shown together and it is meant to link their universes, which visitors then view separately, choosing to go left to see

At Stockholm’s Museum of Modern Art, two stalwarts of art clashed. At the exhibition there, works of Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp — two of the 20th century's modernist greats — were displayed, showcasing their contrasting approaches to art.

humble Duchamp prided himself on a small body of work, delivering just 13 "readymades" over four decades. The two giants began their careers around the same time, had the same patrons, and sometimes the same supporters and admirers. What divided them was their way of getting their message across, according to Jones. "Marcel wouldn't have cared" about his works being exhibited alongside Picasso's, but "Picasso probably wouldn't have liked it so much," mused Jones. "At the end of his life, (Picasso) was quite concerned by the allegiance artists were showing to Duchamp. He despised Duchamp," he added.

The exhibition features Picasso's 1941 masterpiece "Woman with Blue Collar" and more than a hundred of his other works, most of them belonging to the museum's own collection but some on loan, his shocks of colour and etchings hung in a number of small and intimate, inviting rooms. Anna Brodow Inzaina, art critic for one of Sweden's leading newspapers Svenska Dagbladet, said Picasso wins the contest hands-down but criticised the museum's need to exaggerate the rivalry that existed between the two. After Picasso, the museum plans to pit other artists against Duchamp along the same model.

he economic down turn is directly hitting the hospitality industry in the country. “During these troubled times, the businesses want so save as much as possible in their expenditure. Luxury hotels get more affected because every business wants to tighten its belt. Either customers reduce their travel or try to return home in the same day without going to a hotel,” said Chander Baljee, chairman and managing director, Royal Orchid Hotels. This business will shift to the lower range of hotels. Customers who can visit five star deluxe hotels confine to five start hotels, shrinking the overall market, he said. Talking about the relation between the growth in GDP and demand in room supply, he said, “If economy is growing at 6-8 per cent, the room demand will increase by 10 per cent. The industry can do well if 10-15 per cent of inventory gets added every year. However, everybody wants to get in to it and start a business if industry is doing well, which is leading to a disaster,” Though many cities are growing, the industry is mostly concentrated in the capital cities as the most of the commercial activity tends to be there, Baljee said. On the growth rate, he said,

country perspective. It varies by location such as micro market to macro market. For instance, in the case of Hitech City, there will be oversupply soon. However, this may be temporary with demand picking up soon, he said. Talking about challenges of the industry, he said, “Availability of human resource continues to be a problem until industry does something on it. For instance, we have started our own training institute to create our own human resource. Developing human resource will also be a selling point to the hotels. The industry is also heavily taxed in various forms and almost 25 per cent of the revenues goes in to it. On top of it, there are taxes like excise duty and income taxes,” Running an individual is not easy any more. The industry is driven by technical skills and marketing is happening through wide variety ways from Facebook,Twitter to global distribution networks in electronic payments throughout the country. High quality human resource is required to run and manage such complex tasks and generate sales. However, the individual hotels cannot afford them. Tie-ups between the hotels or being part of the chain will help individual hotels to standardise systems and can also have economies of scale in operations, he added.

The UFO labour union said the strike would begin on Tuesday, but they were still discussing what time it would begin and which airports it would affect. That action lasted eight hours and mainly affected Europe's third-biggest airport Frankfurt, forcing the airline to ground 190 of 360 flights.

RUSSIAN OIL BOOM Russian leaders hailed their powerful energy industry on Sunday as the country posted a post-Soviet record high rate of oil production that should boost coffers in uncertain global economic times. The energy ministry said private and state companies extracted a combined 10.38 million barrels per day in August — only a slight increase over July but higher than any figure seen in the past two decades. Nearly a quarter of the oil was produced by the Rosneft unit that last year struck Russia's first Arctic exploration agreement with the ExxonMobil.

arkness has become a lifelong curse for two generations of a family in a Rajasthan village. This family has 15 members, including eight children, who are blinded by daylight. Eighty-year-old Elayachi Devi of Chandawa village, some 150 km from Jaipur, has six sons and a daughter. Three of the sons, Jeetaram, Jagdish and Palaram, and the daughter, Sursi Devi, were born with the disease where they can’t see in the day but can after dusk. Jeetaram’s wife Sharda, their six daughters and a son have day blindness too. Jagdish’s wife Raina and son Rahul and Sursi Devi’s two daughters are also visually challenged. PARLIAMENT

Poor show again, but it was not like this earlier With around 100 Bills pending before Parliament, including some over 20 years old, there is very little chance of the 15th Lok Sabha, whose term ends in less than two years, getting much work done. SORRY STATE According to MR Madhavan of PRS Legislative Research, the legislative work has seen a steady decline over the years. “Compared to the 120-140 days that Parliament used to meet in the 1950s and 1960s, it is now meeting for 60-70 days a year,” Madhavan said. “Even this reduced schedule is not effective as much time is lost to disruptions. The current Lok Sabha has lost over a quarter of its scheduled time till now. The result is a combination of a long list of Bills that await deliberation, and bills being passed without discussion (for example the AIIMS Bill was passed within a couple of minutes on Thursday),” he said.

The family claims that it has approached the administration and politicians for financial assistance, but to no avail. Mansingh Hospital in Jaipur, explained that the condition is characterised by vision loss and sensitivity to bright light. In some cases, colour vision is poor. Patients suffering from this disease can often see better at dusk. Handicapped and unable to earn a livelihood, the family finds it hard to make both ends meet. The village has no school for the blind and so the children stay home. “People think of us as a bad omen. They mock us. No one wants to see members of my family first thing in the morning. Villagers avoid passing by our house in the morning as they think we are cursed, and the curse would rub off on them,” said Jeetaram. The family thus stays indoors till about 10 a.m. “We don’t want to cause any inconvenience to our fellow villagers. If they don’t want to see us early morning, so be it,” said Jeetaram, who is in his mid-30s. IANS

RUSH HOUR

A

s another Parliament session nears its end marred by continuous holdups and with little work done, the 15th Lok Sabha will go down as one that has lost over a quarter of its time to disruptions. For more than a week parliament has witnessed BJP members holding up proceedings demanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over the government auditor’s report alleging irregularities in coal block allocations. In the earlier Lok Sabhas, even the ones that were shortlived, much stress was given to participation and debate on bills, according to data provided by PRS Legislative Research, a research body on the parliamentary system. The troubled 9th Lok Sabha (1989-91), which lasted just 16 months and saw two prime ministers —VP Singh heading a National Front regime and Chandra Shekhar forming a government with Congress support — saw Parliament sitting for more than its scheduled

hours. It sat for 754 hours, more than the scheduled 654 hours, and passed 63 Bills. An equally teetering 11th Lok Sabha (1996-97) which saw three prime ministers in two years — BJP’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee lasting for 13 days, Janata Dal leader Deve Gowda heading a United Front coalition government for 18 months and I.K. Gujral — was a hard-working one. The members sat for 813 hours — beyond their scheduled time of 750 hours — and passed 61 Bills. The 12th Lok Sabha (199899), which lasted just 13 months with Vajpayee heading a BJP-led coalition, fared quite admirably too. It sat for more time than it

Lok Sabha 9th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th

was supposed to — 574 hours as against the scheduled 528 hours — in its short span and passed 56 Bills. Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Zoya Hasan says the “continuous and persistent disruption of Parliament is wrong, even though the issue of corruption is extremely important. This (stalling Parliament) is wrong; it is a very serious issue and this is going to add to the already growing distrust of politicians and Parliament. This has gone on too far.” The 13th Lok Sabha (19992004 — during the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance rule), sat for over 1,940 hours, or 91 percent of its time, and

Devika Malik of PRS said : “In the 10 sessions since the beginning of the 15th Lok Sabha, it has been seen that Parliament manages to pass an average of 10 Bills in any session and introduce about 15 new Bills. This means a considerable backlog. ‘ “Even if Parliament was to function efficiently in the remaining sessions of the 15th Lok Sabha, it is likely that the time spent on discussing each bill will be compromised. DAMASCUS: Arab Gulf monarchies lambasted Syria’s regime for deploying heavy weapons against its civilians, as more than 100 people were killed in raids, bombings and air strikes, according to a watchdog toll count. As the violence raged, new international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said change in Syria was unavoidable”, although he carefully refrained from calling for President Bashar alAssad to step down, as his predecessor Kofi Annan had. Speaking to the BBC, the former Algerian foreign minister admitted that his new mission was “nearly impossible”. He said he was “scared of the weight of responsibility. People are already saying people are dying and what are you doing?” Jihad Makdissi, a spokesman for Assad’s embattled government, announced Brahimi would “soon” travel to Damascus, expressing confidence that “he will listen to us”. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 20 people were killed in an army offensive on Al-Fan village in Hama province, one of the main arenas of conflict in the more than 17-month uprising. Bankers bash up each other in Euro battle

D

raghi vs. Weidmann doesn’t have the same ring as Ali vs. Frazier or King Kong vs. Godzilla, but when it comes to the fate of the euro, it’s a battle between the two biggest beasts of European banking. Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank, is poised next week to put flesh on the bones of his pledge to “do whatever it takes” to save the European currency. He wants to empower the ECB to use its vast financial firepower to buy an unlimited number of bonds from high-debt countries that can no longer affordably raise money on the markets. It’s seen as an essential step to propping up the tottering finances of Spain and possibly Italy. But the proposal has Weidmann worried. The president of Germany’s central bank has emerged as cheerleader-in-chief for the many Germans who fear Draghi’s plan risks undermining their country’s economic prosperity.Europe’s central bankers generally handle their differences discreetly, but the dispute between Draghi and Weidmann has become painfully public in the heat of the euro crisis. The Bundesbank chief warned Draghi against exceeding his mandate in one recent interview. Weidmann insinuated “Super Mario” risked undermining European democracy if he goes ahead with the bond-buying plan by triggering a disastrous inflationary spiral and eroding trust in the banking system. f this city of eight million needs anything, it is the mass awareness on urban living and civic life. But it is exactly what’s lacking. The recent absurd mass reaction to a deplorable rumour that a divine baby was born and people staying awake and keeping vigil the whole night is more than enough evidence of how easy it is to create mass hysteria, which in some cases can set off a fatal stampede. Not that nationally we behave any better. Look how some mischievous SMSes and mails led to the exodus of North-East people. The trauma that these people suffered is something that cannot be fathomed. Coming back to the City, it is clear that people despite education are steeped in superstition. Why they collectively submit themselves to the call of the pied piper is beyond reason. In the instance of the divine baby issue, police went about telling people to ignore it completely and go to sleep. No way: the elders not only stayed awake, but pulled out kids from under the sheets and made them sit before the television to keep them awake! What kind of Gen Next are we making?

BEYOND DOUBT It’s obviously clear that a large number of people, especially in

the old city, are in the clutches of Shylocks and sorcerers. And they are also under the thumb of priests who misguide them. This is one reason black magic is very much in vogue and private financiers continue to fleece the gullible and the hapless. Hundreds commit suicide and get thrashed. It is here that the government that includes the municipal corporation, and voluntary agencies must step in and help them. The situation is not better when it comes to environmental consciousness. We see wanton felling of trees, destruction of plants and thoughtless use of plastic and yet do not understand that we need oxygen and water to live.

MOST IMPORTANT TARGET GROUP The most important initiative must come from the GHMC and the voluntary organizations who could set up a string of

micro-level institutions to disseminate knowledge of civic life and environmental awareness. The most important target group must be drivers. Their eco-illiteracy is proving pernicious for citizens. Perhaps they do not realise that they too are victims. It is a fact that most of those engaged as drivers are highly unaware of the adverse health impact of air and sound pollution. What can one say of a driver who keeps his vehicle running for hours while waiting just to keep the airconditioner on and music blaring? Ask them and they would look surprised at your ‘audacity’ to poke your nose into their affairs! They seem to say, what does it matter to you if I keep my machine running? I pay for the fuel, don’t I? Littering, spitting and urinating in public places (lack of urinals is to be addressed first), and scant regard for pedestrians are some of the common civic curses we see in Hyderabad

(and elsewhere too).

TAILEND A senior police officer who was aghast at the people’s illogical behaviour in the city told me a story: A girl had lost her gold ring while bathing in the village pond. The worried girl looked around for help and saw a young man, whom she knew, passing by. She called out to him and asked him to help her find the ring she lost in the pond. The youth jumped and began searching; soon another came along and he too joined the search. And so who ever came by jumped into the pond without bothering to find out the reason for other people jumping into it. Meanwhile, the embarrassed girl slipped away. Finally, someone who saw the fracas asked why were people jumping into the pond. Since nobody knew the reason, he did not join the crowd in the pond.

I

t has emerged that 13-year-old girl who has been charged under the blasphemy case in Pakistan and faces death for burning pages of the Quran was falsely implicated. A muslim cleric has been arrested for tampering evidence, as witnesses said he stuffed pages of the Quran in the bag of ashes that Rimsha Masih was carrying away for disposing. It is three of the cleric’s disciples who have turned against their teacher. The situation following the incident was very tense where Christians feared violence and persecution. The girl was thoroughly beaten up by the crowd which was worked up to a frenzy by the cleric, and her family was forced to flee their home. Now as a ray of hope shines on the poor girl, one of the prosecution lawyers says he will go ahead with the case against her. Some people don’t change... some never see the light... ever.

Anything for art

S

ome actors go to any extent when it comes to perfection. We have had actors starve to near death, run for miles and miles everyday, shave their head, learn pages and pages of dialogue, spent time in asylums and learn a new language, reading the script 250 times... just to look and be the part they are playing. Shia LaBeouf has outdone them all. To land the part in Lars von Trier’s next film Nymphomaniac in which he plays opposite Charlotte Gainsbourg, LaBeouf claims he sent sex tapes of himself and his girlfriend to the director. One thing is for sure: when it comes to method acting, not many can beat LaBeouf.

here are many youthrun organisations today, but nothing compares to the allure of AIESEC. The following that AIESEC commands over the students was apparent at its two-day recruitment drive that was organised in the city this weekend when more than 650 students turned up just on the first day vying to be part of it. Rooms were abuzz with vibrant energy as some waited for results while others prepared for the upcoming rounds of the selection process. Present in over 110 countries and territories and with over 60,000 members, AIESEC is the world’s largest student-run organisation.

“My friend was part of AIESEC and I saw the changes in her through the year. I want to be part of it to find out what this is all about.” Suvarchala of Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute who is one of the organisers of the event says, “Students have to go through a four step process

before getting selected. The first step is the Raffles round where one’s analytical abilities are tested. Next, is the group discussion round in which students have to debate on topics given by the evaluators. They will change the topic of the debate every 5 minutes and students must cater to this change accordingly. Following group discussion round is the team stimulation session. This is the round that tests one’s leadership qualities and most of the students get filtered during this step. Last one is the personal interview round where each student will come face to face with the recruiters.”

Priya Das from Guru Nanak College who passed the team stimulation round and was waiting for the personal interview session, says that the journey till then was an experience in itself. “The group discussion was nothing compared to the team stimulation session. We were asked to come up with a car smaller than nano and asked us to market it. We were given 10 minutes to think about it and another 5 minutes to present the idea in front of the recruiters. There were five members in the team and only three of us were selected to the next level,” she says.

Sachin, also from the same college also had passed the team stimulation round and had to present ideas on how to market a chinese bundy chain with two thousand rupees. “We were supposed give them ways in which we can market a chinese bunty chain and only three were selected among the five of us,” he says. Archita from Loyola Degree College got inspired to join AIESEC because of her friend. She says, “My friend was part of AIESEC from last year and I saw the changes in her through the year. I want to be part of the organisation to find out what this is all about.”

While Halkat Jawani from Heroine is still making big waves online, the soulful Saaiyaan has surpassed its predecessor and garnered more than two million hits in three days. What do youngsters think of Kareena’s avatar in the movie Heroine?

Too many item numbers

High hopes for Heroine

To attract the youth

I don’t see the point of item numbers. Every movie nowadays, has an actress in skimpy clothes dancing to raunchy music. I don’t think they serve the purpose anymore. I think audience is fed up item numbers.

This size zero is overrated. I think she looks extremely good in this movie and I have high hopes for this one. I definitely think that this will be a super hit. Kareena is beautiful and unlike other actors she can act too.

Item numbers are incorporated to attract youth to the movie and producers are making big bucks due to this trend. But I like the song Saaiyaan more than Halkat Jawani as it a light and soft number.

R

emember those scenes in a motley of Hindi serials and movies where a woman puts her career ambitions before all else and chooses to abort her first baby only to find she cannot conceive when she actually wants to? Then follows a whole slew of scenes filled with drama, repentance, anger, betrayal and what not. But what might have seemed far fetched in these scripted shows, might actually bear an element of truth. According to a recent study, a woman’s abortion history does have a bearing on her future pregnancies and in case of conception then on her unborn baby’s health. According to a study published in the journal Human Reproduction, having repeated abortions can raise the risk of life-threatening problems for future pregnancies. Women who had multiple abortions were three times more likely to have premature babies (before 28 weeks) and poor weight. Figures show thousands of teenagers, the world over, having repeated abortions. “As per the law and guidelines an abortion should only be performed if it is absolutely necessary medically. However, in the event that a woman has had an abortion or multiple abortions, especially before having her first child, the chance of complications in subsequent conceptions does go up rather significantly,” says Dr D Leela, consultant gynaecologist at Rainbow Hospital. She goes on to add that this primarily occurs due to poor quality of the womb following an abortion. “Any surgical wound to the uterus raises the risk of an infection or damages the endometrium (uterus lining). This could spell disaster during a pregnancy as then the quality of nutrients being passed on to a baby during conception suffers. Hence, the baby is more likely to be born underweight. In other cases, if the cervix is dilated too often, like for an abortion, then it widens and cannot hold a pregnancy or carry it to term. So before opting to terminate a pregnancy, it is advisable to think through all the pros and cons,” explains Dr Leela. Sometimes the fallopian tubes can also get infected after an abortion and lead to tubal pregnancies. “The chance of repeated miscarriages after a woman has had an abortion also goes up significantly. A surgical procedure on the uterus can weaken it and thereby put the future baby at risk,” explains Dr Leela.

An abortion too many before having your first baby can ruin your chances of conception later in life. Read on to know why. What are the risks involved?

T

he physical side effects after an abortion will vary from woman to woman. There are potential side effects and risks that you should be aware of. It is important to talk to a health professional as well as the doctor who will perform your abortion about possible side effects. Your period should return about 4 to 6 weeks later. If your doctor has prescribed antibiotics, it is important to take them as directed.

Some of the side effects could be abdominal pain and cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and spotting. However, there could be more serious complications which include; heavy or persistent bleeding, infection, damage to the cervix, scarring of the uterine lining, perforation of the uterus, damage to other organs and in some cases even death. health MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2012 FOOD FOR HEALTH Low calorie diet doesn’t add to longevity LONDON: After all the hype over a low calorie diet being the tried and tested way to shed unwanted pounds or adding years to your life, comes the disappointing news — it doesn’t add to your longevity. “If there’s a way to manipulate the human diet to let us live longer, we haven’t figured it out yet and it may not exist,” said biologist Steven Austad from the University of Texas Health Science Centre. Since 1934, research has shown that lab rats, mice, yeast, fruit flies and round worms fed 10 per cent to 40 per cent fewer calories than their free-eating peers lived some 30 per cent longer. In some studies, they lived twice as long. Such findings have spawned a growing community of believers who seek better health and longer life in calorie-restricted (CR) diets, as promised in the 2005 book The Longevity Diet including 5,000 members of the CR Society International, according to the Daily Mail. The new study, from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the US National Institutes of Health, suggests this link doesn’t hold true for all species. It found that most of the 57 calorie-restricted monkeys did have healthier hearts and immune systems and lower rates of diabetes, cancer or other ills than the 64 control monkeys. However, there was no longevity pay-off. “You can argue that the calorie-restricted animals are healthier,” said Austad. “They have better cholesterol profiles, less muscle loss, less disease. But it didn’t translate into longevity. What we learn from this is you can un-link health and longevity,” added Austad. The NIA study, launched in 1987, is one of two investigating whether eating just 70 per cent of the calories in a standard lab diet extends life in a long-lived primate.

‘Hookah is no better than cigarettes’ Smoking from a water pipe is as harmful to your lungs as smoking a cigarette, a new study from Iran has found.

AMY SILVERSTEIN ith its fruit and candy flavours, hookah tobacco might seem like the fun, innocent alternative to regular tobacco. But a new study from Iran says that those fun flavours are masking the truth: smoking shisha from a water pipe is just as harmful to your lungs as smoking a normal old cancercausing cigarette, HealthNewsDigest reported. The research, led by Mohammad Hossein Boskabady and published in Respirology, casts a grim shadow on a centuries-old tradition in Middle Eastern culture, the AFP reported. Hookah has also become popular in western countries, with defenders claiming that water pipes are safer because they filter out tobacco toxins. But this study discredits those health claims, the Jerusalem Post reported. The Israel Cancer Association added that hookah tobacco is often imported from countries that irrigate tobacco with sewage water. “Our study is the first report regarding the importance of the method of cigarette smoke inhalation with respect to effects on the respiratory system,” Boskabady told an Indian newspaper. “Our findings reveal that there were profound effects of water pipe smoking on lung function values, which were similar to the effects observed in deep inhalation cigarette smokers.”

GLOBAL POST

Dr Diana Monteiro

CHILDHOOD DEPRESSION IS A REALITY als. The view on childhood depression, however, appears to be slowly changing. A child with depression appears different to his/her parents and caregivers in that while he/she is developing normally physically and emotionally, he/she might not be as energetic, playful and is not a bother to his/her parents because of being quiet and

withdrawn. However, that’s where the trouble might be beginning. A child by nature should be wanting to play, interact, mingle and push some limits and if they aren’t doing so, something may be wrong. Very little is known about treatment of childhood depression, since most treatments for adolescents and adults are a combination of talk and medica-

tion therapy for treating depression. Talk therapy does not work for children, since they do not have the linguistic and emotional complexity. Play therapy is sometimes used, however, it’s effectiveness is not fully known. The most important thing is to get your child professional help. The child needs to be evaluated by a child psychiatrist and treated by a child psychologist

or mental health professional. Be fully involved with the therapy. Work closely with your child’s doctor/therapist to help your child, all while offering love, affection and nurturance to your child. She has done a great job. I think a lot of mothers and other members in our families struggle to speak English. The film’s USP is the human emotions.” Elaborating, Balki, the producer of the film, said, “We tend to look down upon people who can't speak English and crack jokes about them. They laugh with you but they feel really bad about it. The film tackles that insensitivity because English is just another language.” Priya Anand is playing an important role and Amit Trivedi has composed the music. KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Oscar Pistorius dethroned

Brazil’s Alan Oliveira stole Oscar Pistorius’ Paralympic T44 200m crown with a powerful run, topping a successful night on the track for the South American nation. PHIL HAZLEWOOD Agence France-Presse LONDON: Oscar Pistorius was on Sunday dethroned as young Brazilian Alan Oliveira stole his Paralympic T44 200m crown with a powerful run, topping a successful night on the track for the South American nation. But the 25-year-old Pistorius hit out after his shock silver that silenced the 80,000-strong crowd at the Olympic Stadium, complaining he was at a disadvantage because of the length of some of his rivals’ artificial running blades. “The IPC (International Paralympic Committee) don’t want to listen,” the South African “Blade Runner” told Britain’s Channel 4 television. “The guys’ legs are unbelievably long. Not taking away from Alan’s performance, he’s a great athlete. “But these guys are a lot taller and you can’t compete with the stride length. “You saw how far he (Oliveira) came back. We aren’t racing a fair race. I gave it my best.

ishal Singh, captain of the RC HPRC, led his team from the front to beat Amrutha Castle 6-4 in the Prince of Berar Cup Polo Tournament at the Bison Polo Grounds on Sunday. Vishal Singh scored five and Khadir Siddiqui one for RC HPRC. For Amrutha Castle, Naveen Singh scored three and Jasmail Singh scored a single. Despite repeated attacks by RC HPRC, it was Amrutha Castle that scored the first goal of the match in the first chukker through Jasmail Singh. RC HPRC equalised through Vishal Singh 50 seconds into the second chukker. Again Vishal struck minutes later to raise his team’s lead 2-1. Amrutha Castle’s efforts to equalise bore fruit a couple of minutes later when Naveen Singh’s shot found the mark. Khadir Siddiqui helped RC HPRC gain lead again just seconds from the end of the second chukker.

LONDON: US swimmer Mallory Weggemann on Sunday gave the perfect response to controversy about her classification upgrade by winning the Paralympic Games women’s S8 50m freestyle. The 23-year-old, who was paralysed four years ago after receiving epidural shots to treat shingles, earlier said she had “lost faith” in the system after she was moved up a class from S7 on the eve of the Games. She said the last-minute re-classification had been “really tough”.

Towards the end of the third chukker, he completed his hat-trick, the goals spaced by about 25 seconds. The last chukker saw Amrutha Castle trying desperately to lessen the lead and catch up which drew some result through consecutive goals by Naveen Singh. The scored would have been 7-4 had Vishal Singh’s shot not gone wide just seconds away from the final whistle. Vishal Singh attributed their victory to sticking to their game plan. “Despite the opposition scoring the first goal, we were undaunted,” he said. “We stuck to our game plan. NORTON, MASSACHUSETTS: South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen fired an eightunder par 63 Sunday to seize a three-shot lead after three rounds of the US PGA Tour’s Deutsche Bank Championship. Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, birdied seven holes in a row starting at the par-four fourth, and followed up his lone bogey of the day at 17 with a birdie at the par-five 18th at the par-71 TPC Boston. Tiger Woods carded a 68 for a share of third place on 13under 200 alongside fellow American Dustin Johnson, who posted a 65. Oosthuizen, who trailed McIlroy by one coming into the round, made it look easy. His string of seven birdies included

INDIA VS NEW ZEALAND, SECOND TEST

History beckons India India will do themselves a favour in winning this Test and wrapping up the series 2-0, for it will do their confidence a lot of good before the sterner test when England comes here in November-December. SYED SHOAIB shoaib.s@postnoon.com BANGALORE: The tenthwicket stand between Jeetan Patel and Trent Boult was looking good enough in the morning of the fourth day of the second and final Test against New Zealand to spoil India’s party, when Zaheer Khan struck, having Patel caught behind by skipper MS Dhoni. Incidentally, Patel it was, who was batting with more confidence of the two, hitting both Umesh Yadav and Zaheer for boundaries before he fended at a short ball outside the off. England’s Ian Gould raised the finger to the half appeal after much deliberation. That left India with a gettable target of 261 in their second innings, the fourth of the match. That the highest fourth-innings target ever achieved at the Chinnaswamy Stadium is 207 against Australia, and

the fact that India at home has scored over 200 to win a test only three times before was made light of with a good partnership between Virendra Sehwag and Gautham Gambhir, putting them firmly on the road to victory. The two openers put on 77 runs, in their first 50-run partnership in 11 innings, before they departed in quick succession. Gambhir hit 34 runs during his stay at the crease, while Sehwag scored a brisk 38 before being bowled by Patel. First Test hero CA Pujara and Sachin Tendulkar batted out the remaining session cautiously, with India going into the lunch break at 88 for the loss of two wickets in 20 overs. The pressure on the team is relatively less, thanks to the positive approach of their opening pair who scored their runs at the rate of over a run a ball.

SOUTH AFRICA IN ENGLAND

England beat SA, lead 2-1 JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse LONDON: Ian Bell made 88 as England beat South Africa by six wickets in the fourth one-day international at Lord's on Sunday to go 2-1 up with one match to play in the series. Man-of-the-match Bell's innings was the cornerstone of England's 224 for four as they won with 20 balls to spare after good work by their bowlers restricted South Africa to 220 for eight.

Together with Warwickshire colleague Jonathan Trott (48), Bell shared a second-wicket stand of 141 after England lost captain Alastair Cook in the first

over of their innings when he was lbw to a superb late inswinger from fast bowler Dale Steyn. However, the Proteas couldn't make further early inroads despite Steyn hitting Trott, a former South Africa youth international, on the finger. As the floodlights took effect on a day where the overcast conditions had prompted Cook to field first, Bell cover-drove Wayne Parnell for four and advanced down the pitch to flat bat him for another boundary.

US OPEN

TWIN TARGETS

Sharapova ends last-eight drought JIM SLATER Agencie France-Presse NEW YORK: Maria Sharapova (right) reached the US Open quarter-finals for the first time since her 2006 championship run with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Russian compatriot Nadia Petrova on Sunday. And defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia set up a last-eight showdown with top seed Victoria Azarenka as both captured fourth-round triumphs on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts at the year’s last Grand Slam tournament. Third seed Sharapova, who completed a career Grand Slam by capturing the French Open title last June, rallied after twice dropping four games in a row and having to sit through a 73minute rain delay. “I’m so happy to be in the quarters,” Sharapova said. “It has been so many years and it’s a great stage to be at.” Seventh seed Stosur squandered eight match points but finally subdued stubborn British teen prodigy Laura Robson 6-4, 6-4 in 98 minutes. She advanced to a quarter-final against an opponent she has never defeated, World No 1 Azarenka of Belarus, who ousted Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili 6-2, 6-2, to reach her first US Open quarter-final.

Results

“As defending champion she’s going to be really motivated. I’m motivated as well,” Azarenka said. “It’s my first quarter-final at the US Open and I’m really looking forward to it.” Sharapova will next face French 11th seed Marion Bartoli, who beat Czech fifth seed Petra Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon winner, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, to book her first trip to the US Open quarterfinals at her 11th attempt. “I’m speechless and that doesn’t happen very often,” Bartoli said.

efending champion Novak Djokovic stormed into the US Open last 16 on Sunday as Andy Roddick stretched his long goodbye into a prime-time showdown with fellow former champion Juan Martin Del Potro. Djokovic coasted past 30th seed Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, while Roddick beat Fabio Fognini 7-5, 7-6 (7/1), 4-6, 6-4.

zech fifth seed Petra Kvitova was eliminated from the US Open on Sunday by French 11th seed Marion Bartoli, who pulled off one of the biggest upsets on the women’s side with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory. Bartoli advanced to a quarter-final matchup against Russian third seed Maria Sharapova who defeated Russian 19th seed Nadia Petrova.

ustralian veteran Lleyton Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam champion, has become a sounding board for rising Aussie teen star Bernard Tomic, who tries to learn all he can from Hewitt’s experience. Tomic made a second-round exit from the US Open at the hands of Andy Roddick in the American’s first match after announcing retirement.

ritish teenager Laura Robson’s US Open journey suffered a gallant, fourth-round end on Sunday at the hands of defending champion Samantha Stosur, leaving her to contemplate a new-found celebrity status. Robson had earlier knocked out three-time champion Kim Clijsters as well as 2011 French Open winner Li Na.

Azarenka eyes title and music video shuffle NEW YORK: World number one Victoria Azarenka (below) has twin ambitions in New York — to win the US Open title and star in a music video with electropop stars LMFAO. Australian Open champion Azarenka made the quarterfinals on Sunday for the first time by defeating Georgia’s Anna Tatishvili 6-2, 6-2 and will face seventh-seeded defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia in the last eight. Azarenka even appeared in her post-match news conference accompanied by one-half of the group, Redfoo, who has been a regular fixture at the event. Stosur, too, is a fan of the group and even performed her own on-court version of the shuffle, a dance popularised in the video for LMFAO’s recent hit Party Rock Anthem. “I’m just a big tennis fan. I think it’s going to be a great match. I’m really looking to see, you know, who has the better shuffle,” said Redfoo. Azarenka added: “It’s going to be kind of like an audition. I think it’s really fun. Actually, my manager likes to dance to it, too. See, she’s embarrassed.” Stosur admitted she may have embarrassed herself with her shuffle. “I figured there’s only going to be maybe one chance you can do that at the US Open with him there,” Stosur said. “I’m sure I looked like a goose.” AFP

WHO’S THE MAN? VAN’S THE MAN Robin Van Persie hat-trick demolishes Saints’ prayers for a major upset. IAN WINROW Agencie France-Presse SOUTHAMPTON: Robin van Persie struck twice in the dying moments to complete his first Manchester United hat-trick and ensure Sir Alex Ferguson's side marked the manager's 1,000th English league game with a 3-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday. Ferguson appeared destined for disappointment on his landmark occasion when United trailed with three minutes of normal time remaining at St Mary's. But van Persie — who had earlier cancelled out Rickie Lambert's 16th minute opener and missed a penalty after Southampton had again gone ahead through Morgan Schneiderlin — equalised from close range in the 87th minute after Rio Ferdinand's header had struck the post. Then with the game in stoppage-time, the Netherlands international met Nani's corner with a near post header that brought the striker's 100th Premier League goal and secured a fortunate win for Ferguson's team. However, Liverpool reportedly offered a derisory £3 million for US international Dempsey, who subsequently joined Tottenham for twice that fee, leaving Rodgers perilously short of attacking options for the foreseeable future. After Liverpool's 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal on Sunday capped a dispiriting week for Rodgers, the former Swansea boss revealed that he has already had frank conversations with his club's American owners.

PSG get their first win ANDY SCOTT Agencie France-Presse PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain registered their first win of the new Ligue 1 season on Sunday night as a first-half double from Zlatan Ibrahimovic helped the capital club to a 2-1 triumph at Lille. PSG's Qatari owners must have been getting restless after seeing their expensively-assembled team limp to three draws in their opening three games, but their signature summer signing Ibrahimovic was the star of the show at Lille's impressive new Grand Stade. Coach Carlo Ancelotti responded to an impotent attacking display in last Sunday's goalless home stalemate against Bordeaux by restoring Marco Verratti and Jeremy Menez to his starting line-up, and the latter provided a fine assist for the opening goal.
