Going beyond duty When Parveen and Naseeruddin had given up all hopes of receiving medical aid for the former’s delivery, they received help from unexpected quarters — the local DSP. YAHIYA KHAN

ot all police personnel are the scowling, menacing kind. There are a few who go beyond the call of duty to help the general public when in need. Be it rescuing them from the brink of suicide like the Lake police in the City does or help the whole family when they are at their wits end, cops these days go that extra mile to alleviate people’s grievances. Recently, G Uday Kumar, DSP Tandur, in an act of humanity helped out a pregnant woman and her family when they found that they had absolutely no money for the woman’s delivery. When 28-year-old Parveen Begum, a resident of Indiramma Colony in Tandur, learnt she was pregnant with her second child, she was excited. Parveen and her husband Mohd Naseeruddin, who had been married for two years already had one daughter. However, the couple were severely strapped for cash, which is why Parveen also went to work along with her husband at a stone polishing factory to make both ends meet. Recently, when the couple

went to the government hospital in Tandur for a check-up the doctors informed that Parveen had only seven units of blood. For her delivery she required at least 14 units. The couple was advised to seek medical aid at the government maternity hospital in Nayapul, Hyderabad. However, the total medical expenditure for the blood and delivery would amount to `15,000, which the couple could not afford. Dejected at being unable to pay for his wife’s hospital

Dejected at being unable to pay for his wife’s treatment, Naseeruddin decided to kill his family and end his life as well. expenses, Naseeruddin decided to kill his family and end his life too. On August 24, when Parveen returned from the hospital, Naseeruddin poured

kerosene on her and their one year old daughter, before dousing himself as well. However, not willing to give up, Parveen escaped from the house and even convinced her husband to run to safety. She immediately informed her neighbours who rushed to the spot and stopped Naseeruddin. The matter was reported to the police. When the DSP heard the story, he was deeply moved and he called the couple to counsel them. He also spoke to the Tandur government hospital superintendent Dr Venkatramnappa and she was admitted to the hospital for delivery. The DSP himself arranged for the blood required for Parveen’s delivery and on September 2 she gave birth to her second daughter. According to the doctors both the mother and child are healthy. A clearly indebted Naseeruddin, family members and villagers thanked the DSP profusely for his gesture. When Postnoon got in touch with Uday Kumar he shrugged it off saying, “We are all human beings first and then public servants. If we do service to mankind, god will help us. Acha karoge toh sab acha hi hoga.”

Foul play in ‘suicide bid’?

Police are investigating alleged foul play in what initially appeared to be a suicide bid by a woman, who killed her daughters due to depression after husband’s death. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

I

n a tragic incident, a 26-yearold woman and her two daughters died under suspicious circumstances at Kanakal village under Shankerpally mandal. However, police suspect foul play by her in-laws. N Usha Rani alias Madhavi of Kanakal village had lost her husband N Umakanth a few months ago to a heart attack. Ever since her husband’s death

Usha had been depressed and on Monday night she allegedly gave her daughters poisoned milk and proceeded to kill herself. However, family members rushed them to the hospital where her four-year-old daughter and 3-month-old baby died, while Usha is in a serious condition, said Shankerpally SI B Chaitanya Kumar. However, the police suspect that Usha’s mother-in-law N Kankamma and her son are

behind this incident and are investigating the case. According to villagers Umakanth had some land and some other property on his name which was to go to his wife and children after his death. It was due to this that her mother-in-law and her son-inlaw planned to kill Usha. However, the police are still investigating the murder angle and refuse divulge any details till they find something more concrete.

unior doctors at Osmania and Gandhi Hospitals have gone on strike, protesting the non-implementation of the bipartisan agreement made with the State government over a 12-point charter of demands. The strike, which began on Monday, disrupted the functioning of the government hospitals as patients were left confused and helpless without any treatment. Emergency services have been affected since Monday, with junior doctors deciding to intensify their agitation. The strike has affected OPD, regular services and classes for the junior doctors for over a week. The bipartisan agreement made with the Junior Doctors’ Association of Osmania Medical College had promised better infrastructure, security and regularisation of rural services for junior doctors. Certificates have been withheld and ESMA continues to be imposed on us, say the agitating junior doctors. “In spite of the 72-hour deadline we have given to the government, they have not taken adequate measures to deal with the situation,” says Dr B Vamsi, president of the Junior Doctors’ Association of Osmania Medical College. Since the last two days, senior doctors and nurses have reportedly been working at 50 per cent of their full capacity. Outpatients from rural areas who came to the City for treatment were disappointed as the OPD has been crippled by the strike.

Trees felled to make way for development In the name of development, the City is losing out on it’s vast green cover and nothing is being done to keep a check on this unnecessary felling. N SHIVA KUMAR

RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com

I

n a report released by the district review committee, statistics paint a grim picture of the rampant tree felling that paves way for development. Road expansions, land acquisitions for rail projects by the GHMC and the Metro Rail project are constantly chopping away the depleting tree cover in the City. The GHMC claims to have made 19 road widenings from 2004 at a cost of `461 crore. Eighteen more roads are currently being widened at a cost of `300 crore. The ongoing road widening projects have already claimed 41 native and endemic trees so far. The ORR project axed about 11,000 trees within its radius while the South Central Railways claimed another 125 for track laying purposes. The Metro Rail plans to axe 300 trees along its MiyapurLB Nagar corridor. Quite recently, the Tree Protection Committee of Hyderabad had denied permission to these departments and a controversy ensued as the committee was alleged to have no hold or disciplinary powers to enforce such a directive. The committee came under fire for being toothless and not having a board of experts on its panel. And also, it cannot be denied that the afforestation and translocation of trees, removed for development projects, are often given a silent burial. While the SCR was optimistic in its promises to replant 5,000 trees, there has been no

word on the land acquisition process that can supplement its optimism. The many afforestation programmes of the GHMC or the Metro Rail have not borne fruit, yet. The HMRL successfully translocated 365 trees during its road widening programmes for the Miyapur-Nagole route. But the fate of the rest of the thousands chopped has gone unanswered. As per the WALTA act, all trees felled for development purposes should be auctioned under the purview of the executive engineer of the concerned department. But officials admit that these norms are taken very lightly. A chief engineer within the GHMC admits that most of the trees felled make good loot for the contractors who in turn profit from selling them to timber companies.

The GHMC made 19 road widenings from 2004 at a cost of `461 crore. Eighteen more roads are currently being widened. A fine example for this is the recent auction of firewood by the HMRL. Nearly 170.3 metric tonne worth tree timber and firewood, felled for the Miyapur to Ameerpet rail route were auctioned at an upset value of `1,52,356 in 2011. The open auction went on to generate over `2 crore for the departments coffers. While this was done in all fair transparency and was among one of the few occasions of the government's honesty, it

is most common among the contractors to split the loot and make good money out of the timber. M Veda Kumar, convenor of the Forum for Better Hyderabad says, “The problem comes from lack of co-ordination between the government bodies. There is no proper assessment and vision over the many City projects and the feasibility of many of these projects too is questionable. For instance, the forest department is still shorthanded in monitoring its urban green cover.” Only through protests and complaints with the government departments have the authorities been jolted into action. But for their part, it is only obvious that there is a serious lack of initiative to stick to regulations, especially when the green cover is concerned.

he cadres of the Communist Party of India have got a much needed boost in the State. The success of the Telangana Praja Poru Yatra on Monday in Warangal district has not only helped the Left to extend unflinching support for the formation of a separate Telangana but also helped the party to consolidate its position in various places across the region. The party began its Telangana Praja Poru Yatra on August 25 from Khammam district. The yatra passed through Karimnagar and concluded in Warangal. Speaking to Postnoon, the party’s (CPI) floor leader in AP Assembly Gunda Mallesh said that Praja Poru Yatra is the beginning of a fresh agitation for achieving a separate state. Questioning the stand of political parties like the Congress, Telugu Desam and YSR Congress, Mallesh asked these parties to immediately make their stand clear on the Telangana issue instead of creating

confusion in the minds of the people. “I think it’s time for all political parties to come up with a clear stand on the issue. If they continue to delay their decision on the issue, which is emotionally connected to millions of people of Telangana, they would face the ire of the entire Telangana community. hief secretary Minnie Mathew has said that the power supply situation in the State was satisfactory. Reviewing the power supply problems with all the district collectors and Electricity Board officials from the Secretariat on Monday, the chief secretary said that the main reasons for the power scarcity were lack of adequate rainfall, non-availability of gas and lack of coal supply for generation of thermal power. Stating that government was taking all possible measures to overcome the power crisis in the State, she directed the district collectors to spare no efforts to provide seven-hour power supply to the farm sector. She also advised the collectors to hold review meetings on power consumption with local electricity superintending engineers on a daily basis. Minnie Mathew asked the collectors to take stern action against those indulging in power theft and disconnect power supply to the offenders. She also directed the collectors to form flying squads to curb theft of power. Stating that 220 million units of power was being generated as against the needed 260 MU in the State, she asked the collectors to take appropriate steps to improve the situation.

Eco-friendly is the way to go The City is all set to celebrate Vinayaka Chaturthi on September 19. This year a special eco-friendly Ganesha in Hitec City is setting an example. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

n the banks of the lake opposite Inorbit mall in Hitec City stands a 75 foot clay Ganesha. The most interesting bit about this Ganesha idol is that it is being constructed by a team of 26 workers from West Bengal. They live in a settlement at the venue behind the construction and spend an average five hours a day in their preparations. A worker at the site says, “We

have been working on this for the last two months. We hope to send a positive message about the use of eco-friendly clay idols through our efforts.” The idol is being constructed with clay and sand brought in from West Bengal. Workers say that the total project estimate has topped around `45 lakh. But unlike other idols in the City, this one stands out as the best as the venue, the people and the idea behind this idol’s construction go a long way in celebrating the festival and protecting the environment.

GHMC

Union offices in GHMC under scanner Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamudin.a@postnoon.com

R

eflecting the adage, ‘first set your house in order’, a higher official who was in news for initiating measures has not given up. Even as the GHMC union elections are looming large, some of the union offices in the Corporation premises of the head office may not only lose the elections, but also office space in the coming days.

“There are 28 different kinds of activities being run in the GHMC building. While some of them are required, others are a burden for the corporation as they are just eating up space,” points out a higher official of the GHMC, who wishes that the space be handed over to some other entities through auction. According to the official, if the Union offices, which have been functioning for years, produce any paper in connection

with the lease, there would be no action. But if there are no valid documents, then the so called offices would be sealed and their keys handed over to GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu. “What purpose are they serving, when there are only 500 employees in this building?” questions the official. The GHMC norms permit the lease period of only one-year and if any organisation fails to extend the lease, it would amount to

‘illegal occupation’. Maintaining the stand that the GHMC was losing huge revenues, the official noted that the so called union offices are mushrooming around the building. “Even if we agree that they address employee grievances, do we require so many offices? On one hand there is a separate department inside the GHMC to serve this purpose. While on the other hand, I ponder why we should provide space and entertain activities

that are in no way helpful for the larger section of the population. Only one organisation can have an office, which has won the elections and mandate of employees,” argues the official. The official who recently inspected the entire premises of the corporation is bent upon bringing in change. After sending a detailed report to the commissioner, an official nod will decide the future of the union offices.

HYDERABAD: The commuters at the Public Garden bus stop are alleging that the stops are turning into an adda for drug addicts and alcoholics. Several commuters were facing troubles due to these persons. The drug addicts and drunkards were occupying the seats provided for the passengers and creating trouble. The women commuters were looking helpless at the bus stops, because the drunkards were behaving in indecent manner. On top of it, the same persons were selling the drugs at some of

the bus stops, creating fear psychosis. They were also attacking the commuters, who try to question their atrocities. Some regular commuters have bemoaned that there was no response from the police, even when they informed about the situation. Assembly employee Sripada Srinivas said that the police have erected a flex in front of the control room against drug usage, but they were not responding on the use and sale of drugs very near to their office. TRANSPORT

ON THE

Our school is in James Street and we live in Borabanda. The only reason we travel by MMTS is because we can save money. We don't need to buy a ticket as no one checks, so we travel by MMTS. It takes us two hours to travel but that's okay.

— Jothi K and Suraj Kumar, school students. I buy my vegetables from Umdanagar and sell it at Hafizpet. For me, the most economical way to transport my stock is via MMTS. These days, if we hire a small tempo or an autorickshaw, the diesel prices are high and we run into losses. This is the best option as we have space to keep our luggage and it's economical too.

— Chittemma, vegetable vendor. When I am in Hyderabad, I use the MMTS services to commute. It is well planned, fast and economical. However, the feeder services are bad. I spend enormous amounts on autorickshaws. They know it's our need and hence demand triple the charge. There is nothing we can do.

— Praveena D, home-maker. It is undoubtedly a convenient mode of transport but it's not very safe for women. Not just

ven on a rainy Monday afternoon, there’s a surprising amount of activity at the MMTS stations along the HyderabadLingampally route. A steady trickle of people from all walks of life — students, home-makers, daily-wage labourers, fruit-

vendors, shoppers, IT employees — come and go. Parking lots are full of vehicles left by owners who will collect them at the end of the day. Counters are busily clocking platform, general and tatkal tickets. There is a general buzz of conversation rising from the odd assortment of passengers on the platform waiting for the train to come. Frequency, feeder services

and few other quibbles notwithstanding, the lure of the MMTS is not hard to grasp. It’s arguably the cheapest mode of transport in the City, faster and less congested than anything on road, not to mention the safest. This has directly translated into a progressive year-by-year rise in the number of passengers availing the facility. In fact, railway officials say they have had to

increase not only the number of coaches for all their trains (from six to nine) but also increase the number of services from 74 per day in 2007 to 121 services in 2011. While the numbers seem to be convincing enough, we talk to a few regulars at different stations and get them to share with us their first-hand experiences of travelling by MMTS in the City.

It might be the preferred mode of transport for only a section of the City's commuters, but it seems that MMTS has managed to gain the loyalty of its passengers.

during the night time, but during the day too, men enter the ladies compartment. It's very unsafe and I avoid travelling alone most of the time.

— Veeramani, intermediate student. I often use my own transport but when it rains, Hyderabad traffic comes to a standstill. It moves inch by inch. I lose out on time. And for a businessman, money is time. Hence, I choose to travel by MMTS during the monsoon. I download the mobile app and schedule my day accordingly.

— Vishal M, businessman.

I use MMTS because it's free. No one checks and it's better than other public transport systems in Hyderabad. It's fast and less crowded. I work in Sanjeevaiah Park and this is the easiest and cheapest mode of transport.

— Yellamma, daily wage worker. I use MMTS only when it rains. Buses are crowded but they run on time. MMTS is never on time and after waiting for a long time, they announce that the trains are cancelled. If MMTS has better time management and more coaches, I'll use it on a daily basis.

— Srinivas K, IT professional. I have been using MMTS for the last 10 days. It does save time but does not function punctually. Rains or no rains, it's delayed. If that is fixed, it will the best transport system for me.

INDIA 2ND IN FORBES LIST

A young techie used the internet platform to enter the world of paid resume services and has carved out a niche for himself. PRUDHVI RAJU K prudhvi.k@postnoon.com

India claims the second-biggest haul after China in Asia's Fab 50 with 11 Indian companies, up from seven last year, figuring in Forbes 2012 list of 50 best publicly traded companies in Asia-Pacific. The US magazine's 2012 list sees the return of the big Indian IT software services and consulting firms, HCL and Tata Consultancy, while an Indian drug company, Sun Pharmaceutical, breaks into the elite ranks for the first time. Once again China dominates the list with 23 mainland entries, the same as a year ago. Malaysia, Japan, Philippines and Singapore each had one representative on this year's list. South Korea could only muster four companies this year, down from eight last year.

T

echnologies are changing the dynamics of business. In the new media world, for some businesses, it is ideas that count and not the investments. The businesses also do not need to limit themselves to a specific region but can cater to global customers. Rajat Vashishta, a software engineer by profession has used the new media platform and started Getsetresumes.com in 2011 with almost negligible investments. The business has got break even in the second month of operations and is enjoying almost 65-70 per cent margins. Today, the business has customers not only from India but also from many other countries like US, Canada, Australia, Gulf. Getsetresumes provides writing smart resumes and applications for professionals and students who face difficulty with written English and who lack time. The business services also include LinkedIn profile development and Mock Tele-Interviews. Talking about the business idea, Rajat said, “It struck while writing a friend’s resume for his job switch. When I looked at purchasing a resume service I found they were too costly. “So, I thought there was a business proposition available. We went ahead with this idea because we felt that many premier resume services were charging a lot for a not so complicated thing as resume writing. Another motivation was to provide a great service. “Till today, we haven’t received a below average feedback from any of our clients and more than 30 per cent of our customers come from referrals.” The business almost started with negligible investments in June 2011. “None, except for hosting fee for our website and the payment gateway setup fee. The entire setup was done in about `10,000-15,000. We designed and developed our

market. People call and straightaway ask why they should chose us over any other service, and it becomes hard to convince.” On taking the business forward, he said, “We are tying up with partner organisations in India and abroad to handle their resume writing work. We are marketing a lot, trying to get more and more foreign clients to take our services. Aging works wonders in Google results and we have aged somewhat in the past one year. So clients can easily find us.” The business is gaining ground and growing its customer base by 30-40 per cent every month. “A lot of people are looking for quality resumes and we have that quality. The best part is that if you do your job well, clients find you. And that is something which is happening to us right now. So I guess if we continue there are a lot of resumes waiting to be tapped,” he added.

CBMs to restore peace in strife-torn Assam GUWAHATI: With violence dying down in lower Assam, the administrations of worst-hit Kokrajhar and Chirang districts have chalked out confidence-building measures to restore peace in the area. Peace meeting by committees comprising representatives of different communities, appeals to refugees to go home with the return of peace and a call to all political parties and organisations not to call bandhs, rallies, road and rail blockades are among measures contemplated under the CBMs. “Government dignitaries and political leaders have cut across party lines to appeal to the people to restore peace,” Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Jayant

Narlikar told PTI. A 16-member team of leading editors of local dailies in the state have taken stock of the situation in relief camps in Kokrajhar and Gossaigaon, he said. The government and the Bodoland Territorial District Administration have decided to rehabilitate “genuine” Indian citizens having valid land documents, Narlikar said. Chirang district deputy commissioner Puru Gupta said, “It can be said that the visit of Bodoland council members to camps has healed the situation to a great extent.” He said with the situation gradually returning to normal, night curfew would be lifted from today. Mumbai, Kolkata, Patna, Hyderabad, Dhanbad and Nagpur, the spokesperson said. The filing of FIRs comes three months after registration of a Preliminary Enquiry into the coal scam by the agency on the directions of the Central Vigilance Commission. During the Preliminary Enquiry, the CBI was informed by the coal ministry officials that it had issued show cause notices to some of the firms which were allocated the mines for explaining the delay in conducting the

mining work. Some of the firms, which were allocated coal blocks in 2005, were yet to start mining, official sources said. The CBI had also examined the past areas of operation of some of the companies which were allotted coal blocks in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, the sources said, alleging some of these firms had been set up only for getting coal blocks allocated and the same was later sublet to other companies at a premium. EDUCATION

Where are the teachers?

As teacher absenteeism continues, a demographic disaster — millions of badly educated youths with high aspirations and unable to find jobs — looms over the country. ADAM PLOWRIGHT feedback@postnoon.com

O

n any given day in a state primary school in India, up to one in four teachers is missing. The cost for a country that sees its young population as its ticket to superpower status is huge. In the poor and agricultural district of Baghpat in UP, home to nearly 200 million people, absences afflict pupils and fellow teachers alike. One frustrated headmistress showed AFP the register for her staff: two out of seven full-time teachers are routinely away. One has been seen only a handful of times in 2012 due to back-to-back medical and childcare leave. "There are so many teachers who don't want to work," she complained in her simple and dimly lit office, asking not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the information she was sharing. “The government provides books, uniforms and midday meals to all students for free. They are spending so much, but if teachers are not dedicated then all the money is just being wasted.” In other schools dotted around the area, about a twohour drive from New Delhi, teacher shortages due to absences or under-recruitment mean class sizes are often double the recommended level of 30. A recent scandal in the area saw 77 teachers sacked after an investigation by a local training college revealed they had forged their own school certificates. Today's dysfunctional education system is storing up problems for the future, say experts. "We have this very young population and it has so much potential," Rukmini Banerji from leading Indian education and research group Pratham said. "If you want children 10 years from now to have 21st-century basic skills, you've got to begin now in grades one and two. If we don't do this, we are going to lose a unique opportunity."

MEASURING THE ABSENCES

In general, state primary schools in India are "abysmal," says Karthik Muralidharan, a professor at the University of California and long-time researcher on the Indian system. His studies on teacher absen-

teeism, done in conjunction with other academics and the World Bank, provide authoritative figures for the problem because they rely on unannounced visits to schools across the country. In 2003 a survey found an average of 25 per cent of state primary school teachers were absent at any one time. A re-run in 2010 found the figure had improved slightly to 23.7 per cent. In Uttar Pradesh, the rate was still more than 30 per cent. Some of the absences are legitimate — sickness, maternity or childcare leave, for example, but an estimated 60 per cent are for questionable reasons. In the worst cases, politically connected teachers take other jobs and pay off school inspectors and continue to collect their salaries. The overall cost of absent teachers to the government could be as much as `8,500 crore a year, Karthik estimates in new research which is yet to be published. The government has ploughed billions into education as a pillar of its "inclusive growth" agenda aimed at ensur-

ing the benefits of economic development reach the poor, who rely most heavily on state education. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh listed the achievements during his Independence Day speech last month. A total of 51,000 new schools had been opened and about 700,000 teachers hired in the past two years, Singh said. For the first time, a Right to Education Act guarantees state schooling for children from six to 14. "Our children are the biggest strength of our country," he declared.

A DEMOGRAPHIC DIVIDEND?

The problem is that genuine improvements in infrastructure

and enrolment levels have not yet translated into better skills. One of India's most significant characteristics, and something that sets it apart from fellow Asian giant China with its one-child policy, is its huge and growing young population. It is home to the world's highest number of children who, in the next few decades, will enter the work force and begin productive labour — something the government and economists refer to as a "demographic dividend." This supposed dividend, however, is set to come from the north of the country, the socalled "cow belt" of badly run states with high rates of corruption, malnutrition and illiteracy such as UP. The prospect of a demographic disaster — millions of badly educated young people with higher aspirations than their parents who are unable to find jobs — is a danger that looms over the country of 1.2 billion people. "Where is the demographic dividend? It's in... states which are lowest down on the ladder on human resource indices," admitted Kapil Sibal, the education minister, earlier this year. Pratham conducts an annual

AFP

survey of rural state primary schools, which finds that after five years of school more than half of children are still unable to read a basic text in their own language. AFP

WORST CASE And disturbingly for the government and its spending splurge, the national results show an "alarming" fall in standards year-on-year in 2011 with India already "very poor on an international absolute scale." The consequence is a surge in private education. More than 50 per cent of primary school pupils in cities are enrolled in fee-charging institutions and 25 per cent in rural areas, according to different studies, placing a huge burden on poorer families. But most continue to attend state schools such as the ones in Baghpat, where the children of agricultural workers and labourers sit on the floor in dimly lit classrooms, learning from a text book that leaves many of them baffled.

emocrats kick off their 2012 convention Tuesday, with First Lady Michelle Obama firing the first shots of a three-day salvo aimed at breaking the electoral deadlock with rival Republicans. With just 63 days until Americans decide who will occupy the Oval Office for the next four years, the First Lady will make the case it should be her husband, the country’s first black president. Michelle, who is more popular than the president, is expected to woo women voters, an effort to eke out any advantage in a race marked by too-close-to-call polls and a dearth of undecided voters. Her speech comes four years after she vowed — before a stadium full of delegates in Denver, Colorado — that Barack Obama, despite his “funny name,” would make an “extraordinary president.” Today, with economic malaise casting serious doubt on that claim, Democrats amass in Charlotte in the battleground state of North Carolina for an event that provides a vital nationwide platform seen just once every four years. Their first task will be to counter the cutting Republican charge that, though his election was historic and rightly celebrated, Obama’s presidency has been a bust. After last week’s Repub-

lican convention, some Democrats spot a fresh opening to win that argument. Hopes in the Romney camp that their Tampa-based convention would help him nose ahead in the White House race were dimmed by new polling data by Gallup, showing little change. Forty percent of adults asked over the last three days said the convention had made them more likely to vote for Romney in November’s election, but a similar 38 percent said events in Florida made them less likely to back him. Obama led the man trying to deny him a second term by 47 percent to 46 percent in Gallup’s latest daily tracking poll, which has rarely strayed

beyond the margin of error since Romney became the presumptive nominee in April. Though cheered by polling data, Democrats were also trying to put out the latest campaign brush fire, after several top party figures struggled to answer on Sunday whether Americans were better off after four Obama years. “Folks, let me make something clear, say it to the press -America is better off today than they (Republicans) left us,” said Vice President Joe Biden, campaigning in Michigan. “Let me just sum it up this way folks... he theme of the day is jobs, jobs, jobs as presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney hit the campaign trail this Labor Day. The Romney campaign issued a statement marking Monday's holiday as "a chance to celebrate the strong American work ethic." But he added: "For far too many Americans, today is another day of worrying when their next paycheck will come," reports AP. Yesterday, Obama hit out at Romney's jobs plan from the Republican National Convention, calling it a "rerun agenda", reports Bloomberg News. “What they offered over those three days was more often than not an agenda that was better suited for the last century,” Obama said at Living History Farms in Urbandale. Monday, Obama is set to address a United Auto Workers Labor Day rally in Toledo, Ohio before moving on to survey the damage from Hurricane Isaac in New Orleans. On the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC, Obama and campaign surrogates are hitting back at Romney's criticisms over the President's handling of jobs and the economy. Romney will likely have more fuel for the fire on Friday when the August jobs report is released, one day after Obama officially accepts the nomination. Obama campaign aide Jen Psaki told Politico that Obama will focus on explaining the difference between his plan and Romney’s. “The president will head right back to the campaign trail after Charlotte to continue laying out for the American people the choice in this election and the difference between his vision for moving the country forward and the Romney-Ryan plan to take us backward.”GLOBAL POST

PLAINLY SPEAKING

Shayana Kadidal

L

ance Armstrong’s decision to not contest the allegations against him brought by the United States AntiDoping Agency (USADA) has left him banned from the sport for life and stripped of his seven Tour de France titles. With several former teammates having already been forced to tell the truth under penalty of perjury to a federal grand jury, including some who had never tested positive and had no axe to grind, it seems likely that Armstrong simply knew he couldn’t win, and decided it was not worth it to expose himself to the daily drama of witnesses telling the same story: that after being diagnosed with cancer in 1996, going through chemotherapy and recovering, Armstrong used illegal blood transfusions and banned performance-enhancing drugs to stage his comeback and win the Tour in 1999 and the six years to follow. The American public has been slowly getting their heads around the idea that a person they regarded as an heroic figure had broken the rules. Judging from the news coverage, I think at the end of the day that most Americans will accept that Armstrong doped to stage his comeback — after his cancer — if they believed that by doping he was only leveling the playing field with all the other

top cyclists at the time, almost all of whom also seem to have been doping. But I would argue there is a bigger set of questions to be asked about Armstrong than just whether drugs facilitated his comeback after cancer. We also need to ask — now that he has been banned for doping — whether drugs might have played a role in his cancer. In trying to answer this question, it’s helpful to understand a bit of technical detail about how doping practices in cycling have changed over the years. The main doping practices of the last 15 years in cycling have involved artificially raising the level of red blood cells in the body. There are two ways of doing that. One involves removing a significant amount of the athlete’s blood a few months before a big race, storing it in a refrigerator, and, after the body has replaced the missing blood, re-injecting it. Many of Armstrong’s teammates have admitted to “blood doping” in this fashion. Receiving transfusions of your own blood is nearly undetectable and has almost no significant adverse effects on the athlete’s health. The second way involves the use of a relatively safe drug, Amgen’s erythropoietin (EPO), a recombinant drug that provokes the body to make more red blood cells. Either method can induce superhuman oxygen-carrying capacity. EPO first gained FDA approval and hit the global market in the early 1990s; by the mid-'90s observers started to

notice much higher average speeds in the Tour. Thanks to a number of scandals and criminal convictions, we now know doping with EPO in pro cycling was rampant by the late 1990s. It was the drug of choice when Armstrong’s comeback began in 1998, along with blood doping. Now, blood doping and EPO are not only very hard to detect, they also have insignificant side effects on one’s health. But during the first years of Armstrong’s pro career, which began in the 1993 season, EPO was almost brand new. Cyclists were still largely using steroids, much like those used by weightlifters and bodybuilders. Such drugs mildly raise the number of red blood cells, but the main benefit is that they allow the body to withstand the battering of the thousands of miles of training the average pro puts in every year. Riders are still using steroids. But they likely abused them to a much greater extent in the 1980s and

the first years of the 1990s, when Armstrong’s career began (and before EPO was widely available). Armstrong had testicular cancer, not as rare as Giambi’s pituitary tumor, and there is no vast scientific literature examining links between testicular cancer and steroid abuse (though a witness to an early hospital-bed conversation between Armstrong and his cancer doctors testified that he admitted using human growth hormone prior to his illness, which is well-linked to a great variety of cancers). But it raises what I think is really the most important question in Armstrong’s case: did abuse of the steroid drugs whose use was rampant in cycling in the 1980s and early 1990s cause the cancer that ultimately made Armstrong into a global celebrity, and into an heroic figure in the eyes of the global cancer community? T

here’s no telling what effect fame takes on people. Sometimes it makes one arrogant; at times it makes one humble. Take Oscar Pistorius’s case. He was the most famous Paralympic athlete... till Alan Oliveira came along. But Oscar, who showed immense courage and determination to come this far and make a mark, like the many like him at the Paralympics, forgot one very important thing. There will be people as good as him and maybe better than him. Alleging that Alan Oliveira won the T43/44 men's 200m final through unfair means is unbecoming of an athlete of Oscar’s standing. Oscar claims that Alan had an unfair advantage because he used taller prosthetic legs. But comments of Oscar who has always maintained that he be judged on his athletic abilities and not on technology are self-goals that belittle the hard work and grit of many like him. It won’t be shocking if people who admired the Blade Runner till date think him a “sore loser” for his untimely comments.

fter two years and 39 official amendments, the Bill on protection of women against sexual harassment at workplace has been passed. One of the most important amendment made is defining sexual harassment. But it would be fair if there are punitive measures laid down for those who may abuse the provisions of the Act, too. It’s no secret that the provisions of the Dowry Act have been used to teach many an innocent man a lesson. It is imperative that this does not happen with the Sexual Harassment Act.

hink twice before you turn to Facebook and Twitter to vent out your frustration at work; the prying eyes of recruiters are on your social networking sites scrutinising your every move. Once, your resume reach the employers, they screen your profiles in various social networking sites to examine your personality traits and use what they learn about you to predict how well you will fit in to their organisation, as well as how you will perform your job. And according to the content found on these sites, recruiters reject a person’s application or call him for an interview. An HR official of a corporate firm who didn’t want her name to appear in the paper said that employers check social networking sites to check if the prospective employee will put the image of the company at risk. “Most of the companies do a background check of the prospective candidates by going through their Facebook and Twitter profiles. The scouring begins from the time we receive an application from the candidate and it goes on till three months into the job. Since, people add the place of work in their profile, the way a person conducts himself on the social networking sites, reflects the image of the company that he is working for. Thus, the person’s conduct on social networking sites is important for the compa-

ny,” she says. Also recruiters keep away from incessant tweeters who cannot stop updating the world about their daily lives. Janith Roy, who attended an interview recently says that he was bombarded with questions about conduct on social networking sites and the recruiters specifically wanted to know if he was an incessant tweeter. “They wanted a person who was aware about the working of social networking sites and was active on them but at the same time was not obsessed and addicted to them. They are also not interested in those who tweet incessantly about random, mundane happenings,” he says. While there are others who are old school when it comes to recruiting people and rely on personal interviews rather than their profiles on social networking sites. One such, Madhu Joshi, director of public relations, Park Hotel, says, “Profiles on the social networking sites are made by the applicants and most of the times in order to impress others, they speak highly about themselves and share information which is not always true. So, I never go by Facebook to dig up things about a person. I think, everything that one needs to know about a person will be revealed during the personal interview.”

DRUG APPROVED FOR IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

eeti was worried. Her mother who always had the ability to create intricate designs with a needle and thread, was unable to even hold the needle in her hand. At first she thought it was a sign of her mother’s growing age, but soon she realised that there was something more. A visit to the doctor revealed that this was what is commonly known as essential tremors. According to Dr Sudhir Kumar, neurologist, Apollo Hospital, “Essential tremors (ET) refers to a condition in which people suffer from tremors while doing various basic activities such as while writing, signing cheques and holding a glass. Although it is mostly noticed in the hands essential tremors can also be seen in the head and in the voice. When it comes to the head, the person may shake his/her head from one side to another or from front to back. When it comes to voice it can be noticed in terms of shaking voice.” Essential tremors are also referred to as benign tremors. Dr Sudhir says, “They are called so as they are not as serious and life threatening such as Parkinson’s. In Parkinson’s, most patients end up suffering from some sort of paralysis which is uncommon in patients suffering from benign tremors. They are also known as familial tremors as the ailment

can run in families. What differentiates Parkinson’s from ET is that in Parkinson’s the patients see their movements slow down, there is a stiffness is their hands and the prognosis and possible problems such as paralysis are quicker in comparison to ET.” Essential tremors occur due to some kind of chemical imbalance in the part of the brain that controls movement. The exact cause for this imbalance is unknown although it is believed to be genetic. Essential tremors can occur in any age group. Dr Sudhir says, “Essential tremors are quite com-

If your child suffers from a food allergy, or you follow a restrictive diet, then take this app to the supermarket with you. It allows you to check information on certain food additives and how they will affect you, according to a number of diet sensitivities, such as coeliac disease, gluten, vegetarian, vegan and even halal.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the stomach contents leak backwards into the oesophagus. This action can irritate the oesophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. When you eat, food passes from the throat to the stomach through the oesophagus. A ring of muscle fibres prevents food from moving backward. If this sphincter muscle doesn't close well, food and stomach acid can leak back.

Women’s hair is about half the diameter of men’s hair. While it might sound strange, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that men’s hair should be coarser than that of women. Hair diameter also varies on average between races, making hair plugs on some men look especially obvious.

James Blundell was an English obstetrician who performed the first successful transfusion of blood to a patient for treatment of a haemorrhage. In 1818, Blundell determined that a blood transfusion would be appropriate to treat a severe postpartum haemorrhage. He conducted a series of experiments using animals, and observed that as long as the blood was transfused quickly, a transfusion would be successful.

RESEARCH

TOOTH DECAY

Asthmatic kids more likely to be bullied Researchers found that factors like inactivity and sadness could explain why children with asthma or any chronic ailment were more likely to be bullied. LONDON: British scientists have uncovered several factors, which include physical inactivity and sadness that could explain why children with asthma or any chronic medical condition are more likely to be bullied. Researchers from the Derbyshire Children’s Hospital in Britain, used data from the large six-country “Room to Breathe” survey of childhood asthma, to look at the factors tied to an increased risk of bullying. Parents and children aged seven years and above were interviewed for the study. Data was collected from 943 questionnaires which asked questions about conditions at home, lifestyle of parents and children and their overall experience of their condition. The results revealed factors such as a reduced participation in sport and feelings of sadness were linked with bullying. Will Carroll, from the Derbyshire, said: “Our findings emphasise the need for doctors and nurses to speak to their patients about the effects their condition has on all aspects of their life. We know that bullying is associated with asthma and these findings can help us understand why this is the case.” “A number of the factors identified are things that can be changed, such as participation in sport, asthma control and parental worry over their child’s health. As doctors, we must work with families to ensure these risk factors are removed and work with schools and teachers to ensure children with asthma are able to participate in sports at a level that is safe for them,” added Carroll. David Supple, the parent of an asthma sufferer, said: “When you have a child with exercise-induced asthma it can be really hard to get them to participate. You can be scared to push them — but the health and social benefits far outweigh the fear, and can help build a lifetime of confidence against bullying.” These findings were presented on Sunday at the European Respiratory Society’s Annual Congress in Vienna, Austria. Coconut oil combats tooth decay LONDON: Coconut oil is a natural antibiotic that attacks the bacteria causing tooth decay. It could be incorporated into commercial dental care products, say scientists. Researchers from the Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland, tested the antibacterial action of coconut oil in its natural state and coconut oil that had been treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion. They found that enzymemodified coconut oil strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria which commonly inhabit the mouth, including Streptococcus mutans, an acid, producing bug that is a major cause of tooth decay. Damien Brady who is leading the research at Athlone, said: “Dental carries is a commonly overlooked health problem affecting 60-90 percent of children and the majority of adults in industrialised countries.” Additional testing by the Athlone Institute found that enzyme-modified coconut oil was also harmful to the yeast Candida albicans that can cause thrush. Researchers suggest that enzyme-modified coconut oil has potential as a marketable antimicrobial which could be of particular interest to the oral health care industry, according to an Athlone statement. “Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations. Also, with increasing antibiotic resistance, it is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection,” added Brady. These findings were presented at the Society for General Microbiology’s Autumn Conference at the University of Warwick, UK. IANS

DIET MATTERS

Dining with friends can make you fat LONDON: Dining with a friend could be bad for those on a diet — it tempts you into eating unhealthy dishes from the menu, just to keep him or her in good humour, says a study. Researchers led by Eric Robinson, psychologist at the University of Birmingham, believe it may help to explain

why groups of friends often put on weight at the same time and why some women complain that they get heavier when they find a boyfriend — they start to copy his eating habits. “There is a lot of evidence that points towards this idea that your friends make you fat. If you have got friends or people you

know who have put on weight recently, then you will put on weight too,” said Robinson. “We found that pairing people with unhealthy eating partners reduced the amount of healthy food they were eating,” added Robinson. The research asked 100 female volunteers to select from

a choice of food consisting of healthy fruit and vegetables or unhealthy foods including crisps, pastries and cocktail sausages. They found that when they were eating with someone who had been asked to pick unhealthy options, the volunteers also picked those. IANS

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

PHIL HAZLEWOOD Agence France-Presse LONDON: Australia’s Jacqueline Freney on Monday won her fifth gold of the Games in the stand-out performance of the day, after a row involving sprinter Oscar Pistorius overshadowed the sporting action. World record holder Freney, who has cerebral palsy, took gold in a new Paralympic best of 1min 9.39sec in the S7 100m freestyle to add to her titles in the S7 50m butterfly, S7 100m backstroke and SM7 200m individual medley. Then with team-mates Ellie Cole, Madison Elliott and Katherine Downey, the 20-yearold added the women’s 4x100m freestyle 34 points relay, making it a clean sweep for the Aussies after the men’s team triumphed on Sunday.

In that race, Matthew Cowdrey bagged his 10th Paralympic title in a career spanning three Games, needing just one more gold to become his country’s most successful Paralympian. “It’s absolutely incredible, I can’t explain how happy I am,”

INDIA VS NEW ZEALAND

Dhoni happy with team’s showing

MSD ticked all positive boxes as he was happy with the team’s performance. ANAND PHILAR BANGALORE: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni Monday ticked all the positive boxes while asserting that he was quite happy with the overall performances of the team that is unlikely to see any kind of “reshuffling” for the forthcoming home Test series against England and Australia. Speaking to media after leading India to a 2-0 series sweep against New Zealand here Monday, Dhoni said he was not unduly worried about the poor form of some of his batsmen, notably opener Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar, while making a case for a longer run to the younger players rather than judging them on the basis of a couple of innings. “No reshuffling. I think, it is just a matter of time before he gets going. I thought he batted quite well in the second innings,” said Dhoni with reference to Gambhir who had scores of 22, 2 and 34 in three innings in the two Tests against the Kiwis. With regard to Tendulkar, the captain said: “Everytime we talk about Tendulkar’s form, he comes up with a big innings and I am waiting.” Dhoni was dismissive of criticism of

Suresh Raina’s injudicious shot that cost him his wicket in the second innings here and emphasized that younger players needed to be given a long run. “Like I said, there are two ways of dealing with pressure. Either you go for your shots, like Raina did, or soak in the pressure, like Virat (Kohli) who batted brilliantly. It depends on the individuals, but I feel we need to back the youngsters, for that’s the way to groom them,” said Dhoni.

LESS RUNS ON BOARD: TAYLOR

Obviously disappointed at having lost the Test series 0-2 to India, New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor Monday felt that his team had its moments in the second game but did not put sufficient runs on the board to pull off a victory. Taylor said that though his bowlers tried their best, credit should also go to his counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli who put on 96 runs for the unfinished sixth wicket to help India get over the line. “There were a lot of moments during the game. To be honest, we would have liked to score a few more runs in that first innings to put pressure on India,” said Taylor.

AUSTRALIA VS PAKISTAN

Hussey inspires Aussies to win SHAHID HASHMI Agence France-Presse SHARJAH: Michael Hussey and Glenn Maxwell hit fighting halfcenturies to help Australia beat Pakistan by three wickets in the third and final one-day international Monday, taking the series 2-1. Hussey scored 65 for his 39th fifty and Maxwell hit a 38-ball 56 not out as Australia successfully chased down a challenging target of 245 in 47 overs, with three wickets in hand, spoiling Pakistan’s chances of beating them for the first time since 2002. Opener Mohammad Hafeez topscored with 78 in Pakistan’s fighting total of 244-7 after they were put into bat in Sharjah.

Hussey added an invaluable 51 for the fifth wicket with Matthew Wade (22) after Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal (3-37) had threatened to wreck their innings, reducing Australia at one stage to 108-4.

Australia had won the first match by four wickets here last week before Pakistan levelled the series with a seven wicket win in the second match in Abu Dhabi on Friday. But on Monday the 37-yearold Hussey, regarded as one of the best finishers in limited overs cricket, kept his cool during a 72ball knock. He hit seven fours and a six. Even when Wade was bowled by Abdur Rehman, Hussey fought hard, adding 67 with Maxwell. When Hussey was clean bowled by Khan, Australia still needed 19 but Maxwell ensured the chase was successful as he went on to hit four fours and three sixes.

I wish these young passionate cricketers all the best and hope they succeed in bringing the world cup home and want them to know the nation will be cheering for them”.

ENGLAND VS SOUTH AFRICA Kevin would be welcomed LONDON: Kevin Pietersen has been given hope of a return from international exile after two England stars claimed the controversial batsman would be welcomed back into the squad. Pietersen was dropped by England after falling out with captain Andrew Strauss and his team-mates following a series of behind the scenes incidents. The 32-year-old enraged his colleagues, who were already frustrated by his rows with England chiefs over his desire to play less one-day cricket, by sending provocative text messages to South African players that contained criticism of Strauss and coach Andy Flower.

No fracture for Trott

E

ngland will make a lastminute decision over the fitness of Jonathan Trott after scans showed the batsman did not fracture his hand in Sunday’s one-day victory over South Africa. Trott, suffered a painful blow on his right hand after being hit by a ball from Dale Steyn during his side’s six-wicket win. With him showing obvious signs of discomfort during a century stand with Ian Bell, there were fears Trott might have broken bones.

As punishment for his behaviour, Pietersen was axed from the final Test against Proteas, the subsequent ODI series and will also be absent from the T20 World Cup.

The 25-year-old Scotsman, who reached his eighth Grand Slam quarterfinal in a row, will play for a semi-final berth against Croatian 12th seed Marin Cilic, who beat Slovakian Martin Klizan 7-5, 6-4, 6-0.

Federer has earned 38 career quarterfinal Grand Slam appearances, three shy of the Open-era record of 41 by Jimmy Connors. Murray is 6-1 lifetime against Cilic but the only loss came in the fourth round of the 2009 US Open. “Tough match. He’s a tough player,” Murray said. “He works extremely hard. He has a solid game. I will have to work extremely hard to beat him.” Top seed Federer, seeking an unprecedented 18th Grand Slam title and record sixth US Open crown, advanced by walkover when American Mardy Fish withdrew from their match over

health concerns. “I am really sorry for Mardy,” Federer said. “I just want to wish him a speedy recovery. We all want to see him back on tour soon.” The 31-year-old Swiss star reached a last-eight matchup with Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych, who dispatched Spanish 11th seed Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 6-1. Berdych has lost 11 of 15 career meetings to top seed Federer. “It will be a tough match

against Tomas,” Federer said. “We have played many times in the past and he has always been a tough opponent. I will have to continue to serve well and dictate the points.” Murray broke Raonic with a drop volley winner for a 5-4 lead and held to take the first set after 36 minutes. In the second set, Murray broke for a 3-2 edge when Raonic netted a forehand and held serve from there to seize command. Raonic, trying to become the

first Canadian man in a Grand Slam last eight in the Open era, surrendered breaks in the third and fifth games of the final set. Murray, who never faced a break point, held serve to end matters after two hours with a service winner. “I used a lot of variation,” Murray said, adding, “Milos has a huge game, massive serves. I guessed right a couple times, got lucky and was able to hit a few passing shots on him.”

oger Federer said he was sorry to see US Open last-16 opponent Mardy Fish withdraw from the tournament on health grounds, a decision which allowed the Swiss a walkover into the quarter-finals. World number one Federer will face Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych in what will be his 38th Grand Slam quarter-final.

ndy Murray believes coach Ivan Lendl’s bittersweet relationship with the US Open could help him unlock the door to lifting his first Grand Slam title. Murray reached his eighth quarterfinal at a major on Monday with a win over Canadian Milos Raonic as he continued his campaign to end his record of four Grand Slam finals without a trophy.

olish second seed Agnieszka Radwanska was knocked out of the US Open in the fourth round on Monday after losing 6-1, 6-4 to Italy’s Roberta Vinci. Roberta Vinci is seeded 20 at this US Open. Vinci will now play fellow Italian and her doubles partner Sara Errani, the 10th seed, for a place in the semifinals.

ara Errani and Roberta Vinci will put their friendship to one side on Wednesday when they clash in the US Open quarter-finals, the first time Italy has seen two of its players reach the last eight of a major. Errani, the 10th seed, reached the quarterfinals for the first time on Monday when she defeated Angelique Kerber 7-6 (7/5), 6-3.

Serena says she isn’t playing strong yet NEW YORK: Serena Williams rampaged through her first four matches at the US Open, dropping only 12 games along the way, but she says she has not even started out strongly on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts. Three-time winner Williams, a 14-time Grand Slam champion, cruised into the quarter-finals on Monday by crushing 82ndranked Andrea Hlavackova 6-0, 6-0 in 57 minutes, firing eight aces and 31 winners. The reigning Olympic and Wimbledon champion has dominated women’s tennis over the past two months and rules nowhere more than in New York, where her 62 career match triumphs are the most of any active player. “I honestly don’t think I started out strong in the tournament,” Williams said. “I feel like I’m getting more comfortable with the court and comfortable with the conditions. I’m getting back to more my game, which is good. “I like to play better during the second week. Hopefully I can do that.” Next in her path to the title is 12th seed Ana Ivanovic, whom she last faced and beat at last year’s US Open, a third win in three meetings against the Serb. “Was it here?” Williams said. “OK, I remember clearly not a lot, but I will be looking at the film.” AFP

VIERI TO BE COMPENSATED OVER PHONE-TAPPING

PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW

REST TO RECOUP

Peter: Glad I stayed

Odemwingie told Albion chiefs he wanted to quit the Hawthorns for a new challenge after a disappointing campaign last season, but was asked to stay on. LONDON: Nigeria striker Peter Odemwingie (right) admits he is glad boss Steve Clarke persuaded him to stay at West Bromwich Albion after he considered leaving the Premier League club during the close-season. The 31-year-old, who scored 15 goals for Albion two seasons ago, was the target of a failed bid by Qatari club Al-Gharafa, while rumours of a training ground row with new manager Clarke added to the impression that his time at the club could be coming to an end. However, Odemwingie has denied there was a rift with Clarke and claims a conversation with the former Chelsea and Liverpool assistant made him reconsider his future. “Summer was a time when, at my age, I had second thoughts about continuing to play at this level,” Odemwingie told the Express and Star. “I thought there would be nothing new for me at West Brom and I gave it a try (asked about leaving) to see what would happen. “But the club said that it was too early for me to go and they

thought I could play an important role for them and keep playing. “Then pre-season started and I got hungry again for Premier League action and I forgot about it. “I don’t know where (talk of the bust-up) came from. People would have seen afterwards if there was a problem.” Odemwingie still scored 10 goals for the Baggies last term despite some mediocre performances and Clarke was keen to retain his services. He started to repay Clarke for his faith on Saturday as he came off the bench to set up the crucial first goal in Albion’s 2-0 win against Everton. “We sat down and had a normal talk. He was the new coach and he said: ‘Give me a few weeks and see how we work, because we’re ambitious for this year’,” Odemwingie said. “I said I would give it a couple of weeks and after that I was enjoying training and it looked like it was going to be an interesting season, so I forgot about the offer.”

WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

England lose Cole to injury Chelsea defender Ashley Cole is ruled out of England’s opening World Cup qualifier against Moldova due to an ankle injury. LONDON: Ashley Cole (right) has been troubled by the problem since Chelsea’s UEFA Super Cup defeat against Atletico Madrid on Friday and the Football Association have confirmed the left-back won’t travel to Chisinau for Friday’s Group H clash. The 31-year-old will return to Chelsea for treatment this week before linking up again with his

international team-mates. He will be assessed on Sunday and England coach Roy Hodgson hopes he could recover in time to feature in the qualifier against Ukraine at Wembley. “After reporting to the England hotel on Monday morning, Ashley Cole has returned to Chelsea for further treatment,” a statement on the FA website announced.

“Cole has a minor ankle concern and will be treated by his club this week, before being assessed by the England medical staff on Sunday to see if he is available for the World Cup qualifier with Ukraine, on Tuesday 11 September.” It is another blow for Hodgson after striker Andy Carroll was forced to withdraw with a hamstring injury.

Ronaldo, Pepe, spared from Portugal training LISBON: Real Madrid duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe joined up with their Portuguese national team colleagues on Monday, but neither is expected to train until Wednesday due to minor injuries. Portugal captain Ronaldo has a knock to the left thigh, while Pepe is struggling with a sprained left ankle, according to a statement released by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Monday. “The two players are following specific treatment programmes for the next two days (Monday and Tuesday) and are due to return to training on Wednesday,” added the FPF statement. The duo teamed up with Paulo Bento’s squad at their base in the town of Obidos in central Portugal ahead of their opening 2014 World Cup qualifying Group F fixtures in Luxembourg on Friday and at home to Azerbaijan in Braga next Tuesday. Ronaldo was substituted in the second half of Madrid’s 3-0 win against Granada in La Liga on Sunday evening. He later created a media storm in Spain after telling reporters that he was “a bit sad” at the Santiago Bernabeu for “professional reasons.”

NATION CALLING Liverpool’s Jones gets Australia call SYDNEY: Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones was on Tuesday called up to the Australia squad for the first time since the 2011 Asian Cup finals and the death of his young son Luca from leukaemia. Jones was drafted in for Thursday’s friendly against Lebanon in Beirut and their World Cup qualifier against Jordan five days later, replacing Reading keeper Adam Federici, who is injured. The Liverpool player, whose six-year-old son died in November last year, is currently Pepe Reina’s understudy at Anfield. First-choice goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is poised to become the first Australian to win 100 caps. Australia are third in Group B in final Asian World Cup qualifying with two points from two games, the same as Iraq. Japan are top on seven points from three matches.
