ankranti is a special time for the people of Andhra Pradesh. It is the season of harvest and a reason for rejoicing and celebration. Families make sure they spend time together through activities like kite flying throughout the three-day festivities and by lighting bonfires on Bhogi day. Every year the festivities see new activities that add to the merriment. The biggest activity enjoyed during Sankranti are the kite flying competitions. From informal, spontaneous competitions between residents of neighbouring apartments, areas and colonies to organised competitions arranged at People’s Plaza, Shamirpet, Shilparamam and Old City, when it comes to kite flying, Sankranti sees it all.

FESTIVAL The Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC) is organising a family event this Sankranti, which will see participants competing in traditional games like lattoo (spinning top), marbles, tokkudu billa (hopscotch) and gilli danda (remember the game in Lagaan?) apart from kite flying. The event is to be held at Kohe Imam Zamin, Ammuguda on January 15. “We, at GHAC, believe that we
need to bring back traditional Indian games and ensure our children do not miss out on the fun we had,” Suresh Kochattil, assistant organiser at GHAC told Postnoon. “We also want to bring about a bonding in the family and thus
want parents to come along with their children for the event,” he added. The Hyderabad Kite Festival hosted by a private organiser near Shamshabad airport promises a wide range of activities like rangoli
competition, bullock cart race, gaming stalls, rock bands, DJing and fluorescent kite flying on January 14. Not to be left out of the fun, youngsters in the City are gearing up for their bit. Barbeque parties on terraces coupled with the kite flying seems to be the hot favourite with many youngsters this season. Get-togethers are being arranged where friends and family will have the pick of food, music and alcohol. Says Rohit Niranjan, a student of Muffakam Jah Institute of Engineering, “This Sankranti, I am holding a huge terrace barbeque party for my friends where there will be kite flying along with food and drinks. One of my friends is doubling as a DJ, so it is going be a fantastic party.” This Sankranti, people are sure to enjoy through a combination of fun activities.

Cameras are not mere showpieces: Khan Mohd Shuban
I
t’s wrong to believe that the surveillance cameras installed in strategic points in the City are only show pieces. They are very effective in the twin cities. Based on the records the police have solved some 15-20 sensational crimes, said the Hyderabad Police Commissioner AK Khan. “These cameras are not just recorders but a deterrent to law breakers and terrorists,” Khan said. He was peeved at the general belief that the cameras are show pieces and do not work. Now 250 cameras are working in different parts of City. They are not sufficient though. Police need more than 2,000 cameras for Hyderabad and 1,000 for Cyberabad, he said. In Hyderabad, the five zonesSouth, East, Central, North, West have working cameras. The police have plans to install cameras in hotels, malls, and corporate offices.

Priyanka, the 22-yearold nursing student who consumed hair dye on December 31 in a suicide bid to escape harassment of her tutor died today at the Osmania Hospital. She was put on life-saving equipment for the past four days. The tragic event is the sequel to a long story of sex and lust, according to the suicide note Priyanka left behind. The Tappa Chabuthra police who filed an abetment to suicide case against the tutor Regima Salomi said that the note stated that she was being used and sexually abused by her tutor for a
long time. She was made to work like a maid and a sex slave. The deceased was made to massage her mistress. The tutor allegedly used to ask sexual favours from her. Priyanka hailed from Mahbubnagar district. Scared for her life, Priyanka recently married a young man, Srinivas, who worked in the hospital canteen but she was still harassed by her tutor. The tutor retired on December 31 and the same day the nurse decided to end her life. The police have not yet arrested the tutor. “Investigations are going on”, they said. Several rights organisations have demanded that the tutor be arrested and prosecuted.

Fine to steal electricity POWER Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com
C
an one cheat electricity bills and get away with it? Probably not! The Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited (APCPDCL) is cracking down on households that steal electricity directly from power lines as well as tampering electrical meters. What’s the fine? Three times the amount of pilfered units as well as a compounding fee of ` 1,000 per kilowatt (kW). Is it worth the risk? Pilferage is still, by and large, active in Mehdipatnam, Langar Houz, Khairatabad and parts of Old City. Previously the pilferage trend was to hook a conductor to an electric pole and draw power. This still largely exists in the rural areas now. However, things have changed with the advent of technology particularly in urban areas. This practically makes it impossible to figure out the points of power theft or where the meters are tampered with. Earlier, electromechanical meters were widely used by the electricity department which got upgraded to static meters. The CPDCL claim that it is far more accurate, so much so that even the power consumed by charging a mobile is recorded. So how exactly are the electrical meters are tampered with?

According to sources at CPDCL, in one such way to slow down the number of revolutions in an electrical meter and minimise the reading of consumption, a hole is drilled on the top of the meter which is so small that it is almost invisible to a naked eye. A device is then inserted through the hole that obstructs the meter from running regularly. In another popular method, an x-ray film is inserted between the lid and meter box. This slows down the meter reading tremendously especially when a lot of
power is being used. The residents insert it when they are likely to consume more power and remove it when it is less. “This leaves a black dust in the meter through prolonged use and we can easily spot if the meter has been tampered with,” said an official of CPDCL. The immediate way of spotting a tampered meter is a small U-shaped wire that runs along the bottom. This transfers the power through the meter but goes undetected. However, violators are placing the wire inside and away from visibility. “This is the first mark of the meter being tampered with,” said an official. Many a times, the Meter Relay Testing (MRT) seal on either side of the meter is meddled with. The seal is broken or replaced with other ‘seals’. This is also an indication of a tampering, say officials. The electricity department lose 14 percent in revenues due to pilferage of electricity only in Hyderabad. “In case of abnormal reduction in electrical bills, we go and verify the meter and open the seal to check if it has been tampered with. If found guilty, we file a case under Section 135 of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, and the violator has to cough up three times the average stolen units of electricity as well as pay a compounding fee of Rs. 1000 per kW,” said the official. “Don’t indulge in this activity. It isn’t worth paying three times of what you would generally pay,” he advised.

Postal employees all India strike from Jan 17
T
he uniformed postman calling on you with an eagerly awaited letter or document has become a rare event now, but it will soon cease altogether if the government has its way and goes ahead and privatises the postal service, say postal employees union. “We are therefore going on an indefinite strike from January 17,” they say. “Post and postman are heritage, we will lose all,” said the Postal Joint Action Council (State unit) convener DASV Prasad on Wednesday. The postal employees’ strike is in response to the call given by the National Unions from January 17. The stir is a protest against the Central government’s attempts to privatise postal services. Prasad said that they had given the strike notice on December 15, 2011 to the Central government. Postal Board members and the union leaders held a dialogue on December 27, 2011. However, it failed, and hence, the strike. Prasad alleged that the Central government was trying to introduce the Postal Department Amendment Bill in the ensuing parliament session. He demanded the Central government not to implement the Mecancy Recommendations to weaken the postal department. He also wanted transfer of the speed post hubs from postal to RMS wing. He regretted that the Central government had given a promise to the employees not to close the post offices, the offices were being closed indiscriminately. Co-convener K Manohara Rao said that they would organise a mass dharna programme in front of the chief postmaster general office at Abids on January 10, along with regional and divisional level staff across the State. He said that a torch procession will be held on January 16 evening at all the division offices.

mid a sense of doubt and despair, the State is gearing up to conduct the prestigious Partnership Summit 2012 between January 11 and 13. While 1,500 participants are expected to participate, a big question mark stares at its success. Yet, the State government is putting up a brave front. According to insiders, only 800 participants have confirmed their participation. But Government sources clarified that 1,500 people form 26 countries are taking part in the event. This is indeed a jolt to the government which is already reeling under several problems – prominent among them being the severe shortage of power supply, the likely hike in power tariff and the separate state agitation. Minister for finance Anam Ramnarayan Reddy has hinted at the possibility of this department getting merged with one of the ministries. But he hastened to add that all the employees and agents of the small savings department will be protected. There are indications that it would be working under the Finance
Department. Small Savings is one department which works at the grass root level especially in the rural areas. The savings are used by the Centre and also the State in need. The move actually was initiated during the regime of TDP but bureaucracy did not facilitate it. There are reports that political parties will oppose the move. Small savings is in touch with the rural poor and lower middle class and local post offices. It’s unwise to take away its identity, they argue.

Astad Deboo: A movement in contemporary dance Indira Atluri

here are two categories of people that dominate the world. One that is ready with reasons for delaying their ambitions, and another that realises, ‘now’ is the time to do it. Astad Deboo, the messiah of contemporary dance in India, obviously belongs to the second. Astad Deboo’s transformation into the father of contemporary dance in India is definitely not a sojourn that all dancers can embark upon. He was trained in classical dance, but was forced to put an end to his passion and instead pursue an economics course at Podar University, Mumbai. It was when he saw the performance by the Murray Louis Dance Company artists that he revisited his true calling. Shortly after, he moved to New York to study contemporary dance at the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance. Says Deboo, “I was amazed by their different dance style, and the vocabulary in their movements was something I wanted to learn. There was nothing happening in the contemporary dance scene in India, so I decided to take up the journey.” Over the years, he learnt various other dance forms, including Martha Graham’s modern dance techniques from the London School of Contemporary Dance, and Jose Limon’s dance techniques in New York.
Deboo’s talent did not take too long to be recognised. He was chosen as the choreographer in the great painter, M F Hussain’s film, Meenaxi - A Tale of Two Cities. When asked about what he felt like, he tells us, “I mostly interacted with the actors — Tabu and Kunal Kapoor — the director of photography and the art direc-

tor. Hussain was not required to be part of the work.” While we sought for superlatives from Deboo about his experience, his unaffected nature is clear when he adds, “It was another assignment given to me, and I did my bit to fulfil it honestly.” Deboo believes that ‘Contemporary dance choreographer’ is a blasphemously used term today. Says he, “There is an evolutionary phase which involves a great process of thinking, analysing, and a ‘what is my innovation take on the dance’ phase that makes one become a contemporary dance choreographer. You don’t wake up one morning and simply give yourself that title.” He also believes that there is very little support for the creative platforms in the country. On questioning him about what kind of support is required, he replies “There should be more platforms for dance performers provided by people who understand the value of the art. For example, this is my first time ever in Hyderabad, thanks to the few who realized the importance of contemporary dance. The more the performances, the better the publicity.” Ask him about the impression of choreography in modern Bollywood cinema, he is quick to reply, “There is a lot of entertainment, yes, but unfortunately, it does not excite me. Bollywood today may be slick, but more often than not, it is a few steps

Virat Kohli was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for showing his middle finger to the crowd on the second day of the second Test between India and Australia. “I agree cricketers don’t have to retaliate, what when the crowd says the worst things about your mother and sister, the worst I’ve heard,” tweeted Kohli. Kohli got support from England’s Kevin Pietersen, who knows about Australian hospitality. “Welcome to Australia buddy ... you beat them and they start abusing their own,” tweeted KP. Kohli’s fingergate fetches mixed reactions in City It was his (Virat’s) first time in Australia. That could be why the crowd targeted him. He should have kept his cool and answered them through his game. But I feel the crowd should also behave. At matches abroad we do face such treatment. But, I try to focus on the game.
I think he should have kept his calm. It can get frustrating, because it gets on one’s nerves. But it’s part of the game. If the crowd taunted Kohli, he should have replied through his performance. Although I’ve never been jeered at, opponents do sledge. But I try to focus.
When there are so many things on your mind these things happen. It was Virat’s first time in Australia and then ‘it is Australia.’ Things can get very tough there. He’s a youngster. It could have been the pressure of the game. But the crowd should not have been abusive. It’s okay to joke, but hurling abuses is not done.

Congress may run out of Trinamool mamata
KOLKATA: The tense relationship between West Bengal’s two ruling parties nose-dived on Wednesday after the Congress called the Trinamool Congress a ‘B-team’ of the BJP and Left. A furious Trinamool asked the Congress to quit the State government. The State Congress leadership’s comment came a day after Trinamool leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the State Congress was colluding with the Marxists to hurt her party. The Congress in turn has accused the Trinamool of constantly playing spoilsport visa-vis various policies of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). “We are constantly called the B-team of CPM. But it is Trinamool which has been on the same boat with BJP on FDI in retail. They (Trinamool) along with BJP and Left opposed FDI inretail. On Lokpal Bill too the Trinamool MPs took the same line as (Marxist) Sitaram Yechury,” Congress MP Deepa Dasmunsi said. “After so many instances, why can’t we call them B-team of Left and BJP when on each and every issue they are opposing the Congress at the centre? They are the B-team of CPM and Left,” said Dasmunsi. The Trinamool Congress is the second largest partner of the UPA after the Congress. The two parties also share power in West
Bengal although the Trinamool, with over 180 legislators, is not dependent on Congress to run the government. The Trinamool leadership Wednesday challenged the State Congress by asking its ministries to resign, saying won only because of the appeal of Mamata Banerjee. “If they (Congress) think that we are so bad, then why don’t they leave the ministry and the post of MLAs which they won using the name of Trinamool and Mamatadi? They will not leave the ministry because they are greedy and they can’t win again without Mamatadi,” gloated sports minister Madan Mitra of the Trinamool. “If they have the guts, they should leave the ministry. If they want they can go to CPM. Why they are staying with us? If they leave us, the Bengal government
Did Krishna abet illegal mining in Karnataka? BANGALORE: A leading NGO on whose petition the apex court banned mining in Karnataka on Wednesday accused external affairs minister SM Krishna of abetting illegal mining in the state when he was chief minister from 1999-2004. Krishna had failed to cancel the lease of a mining firm, which illegally extracted iron ore from the 20.7-acre mining area of the state-run National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) in Bellary district, ignoring the advice of then Union minister of state for steel Dilip Ray, National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) president SR Hiremath told reporters . The released documents, included a letter Ray wrote to Krishna on March 13, 2000,
Hiremath said that though stringent action against Deccan Mining Syndicate Ltd, including termination of its mining lease was sought for its illegal activities since 93-94 in the NMDC area, Krishna ignored the advice in violation of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act of 1957. The Supreme Court on July 29 banned mining in Karnataka after the Dharwad-based NGO filed a petition against the multicrore mining scam. IANS
will not fall. But if we leave the UPA, the central government will fall. So they should not talk much,” said Mitra. “They are agents of the Marxists and will remain so. They will never change their nature,” added Firhad Hakim, the urban development minister and another Trinamool leader. But Congress leader Manas Bhuniya, the State irrigation minister, demanded to know why the Trinamool was always attacking the Congress just because “we don’t agree with them on certain issues”? The State Congress leader was addressing a rally organized to protest against the “inaction” by the State government to take care of farmers who said they were not getting proper price for their produce. “There is no reason for Trinamool Congress to think that Congress is weak in the State,” West Bengal Congress president Pradip Bhattacharjee said. The Congress-Trinamool ties in the State and at the centre have remained uneasy since Banerjee joined the UPA after the 2009 Lok Sabha election. She has bitterly opposed and blocked some of the key policies and Bills of the UPA government, including the anti-corruption Lokpal Bill. Banerjee also raised objections to the proposed foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail, forcing the government to put the move on hold. IANS

More arrests in Bhanwari Devi murder case JODHPUR: Four months after she went missing and with several arrested in the case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday identified the location where Rajasthan nurse Bhanwari Devi’s body was disposed of after she was kidnapped and burnt to ashes September 1, sources said. The CBI took Omprakash Bishnoi, who was arrested in connection with the case, to a place near Jaloda village where the nurse’s body was burnt. “Omprakash told the agency that the remains of her body were dumped into a canal near the village,” sources said. The location of the body was the biggest mystery in the case, which the CBI has
apparently solved. Omprakash is the brother of Bishnaram Bishnoi who was held near Pune by Maharashtra police on Wednesday morning. The CBI had announced a cash reward of `5,00,000 on Bishnaram saying that he was involved in the disposal of the nurse’s body. A team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory is expected to arrive in Jodhpur from New Delhi today and inspect the place where the body was brunt. Earlier in the day, Omprakash was produced in the court of an additional chief judicial magistrate here and his CBI remand period was extended till January 9. IANS

EU agrees to crude oil ban E U member states have agreed in principle to ban imports of Iranian crude oil to put pressure on the country over its nuclear programme. The move is expected to be announced formally at an EU foreign ministers’ meeting at the end of January. The US, which recently imposed fresh sanctions on Iran, welcomed the news. Iran has dismissed the threat of new sanctions and denies Western claims that it is trying to develop a nuclear weapons programme. Iran has also denied that a record low of its currency this week was linked to punitive US measures against its banks. Oil prices on international markets rose on news of the EU agreement.“We have an [EU] for-

M
innesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann has ended her presidential campaign after finishing at the back of the field in Iowa’s caucuses. Her exit leaves six Republicans in the race to challenge Barack Obama for the White House in November. Mitt Romney, who narrowly won in Iowa, meanwhile rolled out an endorsement from ex-Republican nominee John McCain. Rick Perry, who came fifth, vowed to press on, but will focus on the next-but-one race in South Carolina. Mitt Romney is a heavy favourite to win next week’s primary election in the north-eastern state of New Hampshire. Caucuses and primary elections will be held in all 50 states over the next six months before the Republican presidential nominee is
confirmed at the party convention in Florida this August. Former Massachusetts Governor Romney won Tuesday’s Iowa caucuses by a wafer-thin margin over former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. He squeaked to victory in the early hours of Wednesday by just eight votes, with 30,015 ballots (24.55%) against 30,007 for social conservative Mr Santorum (24.54%). Texas congressman Ron Paul, a libertarian-leaning anti-war candidate, came a strong third. Mrs Bachmann, who came sixth with just 5% of the vote, told a Wednesday morning news conference in Des Moines, Iowa: “I have decided to stand aside.” The 55-year-old - who had courted the evangelical Christian vote and was briefly the front-runner back in August - said she had “no regrets”. Mrs Bachmann did not endorse another candidate, but said: “I believe that we must rally around the person that our country and our party and our people select to be that standard bearer.” She spoke at length about her reasons for entering the race, denouncing President Obama’s healthcare reforms as “left-wing social engineering”, which “endangered the very future” of the USA record 122,000 straw ballots were cast by Republicans in the largely rural state. There had been speculation that Texas Governor Rick Perry might also drop out after he said he would return to his home state to reassess his campaign. But instead of going back to Texas, he tweeted on Wednesday: “Here we come South Carolina!!!”

Ps should consider changing the law on assisted suicide to allow some terminally ill people to end their lives at home with the help of their doctor, a major report into the subject has concluded. The Commission on Assisted Dying, chaired by the former lord chancellor Lord Falconer, says a choice to end their own lives could be safely offered to some people with terminal illnesses, provided stringent safeguards were observed. Describing the current law on assisted dying as “inadequate and incoherent”, the commission will outline a legal framework that would permit only those who had been diagnosed with less than a year to live to seek an assisted suicide, and then only if they met a strict eligibility criteria. benchmark in realty

HYDERABAD: As the avaricious urge for absorption in the real estate sector remains growing, large corporates accelerated their activity in this core area, pumping in billions of dollars. The real estate sector in India is on a growth path. The development in the real estate market encompasses growth in both commercial and residential spheres. Further, it has been estimated that there would be a shortage of 26.53 million houses during the eleventh five-year plan (2007-12) period, which provides a tremendous investment opportunity, according to a report by the Technical group on estimation of housing shortage. The residential real estate industry grew at an average of 20 to 22 per cent from 2007 to 2011. In this scenario, large corporate groups like Tata Housing, Godrej Properties and Mahindra Lifespaces are entering into different cities. Tata group identified housing sector as the key driver for the economic growth in the coming years. It aims to become one of India’s top three real estate developers with revenues of over $ 1 billion by 2015. Mahindra Lifespaces has a presence in five cities and also have
plans to enter the top 10 major cities. Godrej properties is currently developing projects in 12 cities across India and wants to see itself in the top three real estate companies in the country. The entry of corporate groups like Mahindra, Tata, Godrej will bring in corporate governance standards in terms of disclosures, accounting policies, maintaining customers account books and in terms of buying land and getting approvals. Aside from this, the facilities would have the best of management making lives easier for the dwellers, according to Anita Arjunadas, CEO and Managing Director of Mahindra Lifespaces. The accountability and governing requirements automatically will hit the new benchmark. The banks, financial institutions and investors would want local companies to comply with corporate governance standards. This helps raise the bar. “The corporate groups’ entry will help us to improve ourselves. We can have their standards as the benchmark. However, these companies cannot offer properties at cheaper prices compared to the existing market leaders. The existing companies will try to provide the same level of services at cheaper prices,” said G Yoganand, Chairman and managing director, Manjeera Group.
Mahindra forays into affordable housing HYDERABAD: Mahindra Lifespaces, the real estate and infrastructure arm of Mahindra group, will enter the affordable housing segment offering apartments costing Rs 5 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh. Anita Arjundas, managing director and chief executive officer, Mahindra Lifespaces, said here on Wednesday that there was a huge demand in this segment. This wasn’t addressed. Mahindra group saw there was an opportunity, she said. “The project is in the phase of research and development (R&D). As of now, we are working on our own but will explore the opportunities of public-private partnership in the space after the first project taking shape next year. There are some governments who look at the private partnership may come with certain policies. The project would initially start with Maharashtra, NCR and Tamil Nadu and slowly shift to the other cities in the country,” she added. Mahindra Lifespaces has entered in to the Hyderabad with a million sq. ft. residential project involving an investment of Rs 250 crore at a 10 acre land in Kukatpally. The project will be launched soon and will be delivered in three years, she said.
NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki unveiled a compact SUV, XA Alpha, at the Maruti Suzuki pavilion at Auto Expo 2012 on Thursday, marking the launch of the six-day auto expo. The XA Alpha comibnes ruggedness and ‘muscle’, the usual attributes of a sports utility vehicle. The company said in a release that it was trendy and youthful. Ertiga is another model will be launched by Maruti on Friday. The latest edition of Auto Expo will witness as many as 50 global brands showcasing their products. The event will witness the unveiling of 24 cars by domestic companies and eight by global players, besides eight two-wheelers by homegrown firms. The event, which will be open to the public from January 7 to 11, will see Netherlandsbased commercial vehicles maker Paccar, UK motorcycle brand Triumph and US off-road vehicle and bike-maker Polaris
Industries showcasing their products here for the first time. The latest edition of the exhibition will be spread across 1.15 lakh square metres of space, compared to 1.25 lakh square metres in 2010. However, over 100 exhibitors from across the globe have been denied permission to participate at the forthcoming 11th Auto Expo due to space limitations at Pragati Maidan. The organisers have decided to restrict the number of people present inside the venue to one lakh daily, including 30,000 people from the exhibitors’ side, a move that could cost the Delhi Auto Expo its tag of being the world’s second-largest auto show in terms of footfalls. Out of these, about 60 exhibitors are from overseas countries, while the rest are domestic companies. The show will see participation by 1,500 representatives from 24 nations, including the US, China, Thailand and Turkey.
Boeing cuts 2,100 jobs WASHINGTON:
US aircraft company Boeing has announced its plans to close a massive plant in Wichita in Kansas state before the end of 2013, a decision that will affect a total of 2,160 employees. "The decision to close our Wichita facility was difficult but ultimately was based on a thorough study of the current and future market environment and our ability to remain competitive while meeting our customers' needs with the best and most affordable solutions," Mark Bass, vice-president and general manager for Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) Maintenance, Modifications and Upgrades division, was quoted as saying by Xinhua. The announcement means that its 2,160 employees will lose their jobs at the Kansas facility, which is the base for Boeing's
Global Transport and Executive Systems business and its B-52 and 767 International Tanker programmes. The facility also provides support for flight mission planning and integrated logistics. According to Boeing's new plan, future aircraft maintenance, modification and support work will be placed at the company facility in San Antonio, Texas, while engineering work will be placed at the facility in Oklahoma City. The main reason behind the closure of the Wichita facility, according to Boeing, was the $500 billion defence budget cuts over the next 10 years. "In this time of defence budget reductions, as well as shifting customer priorities, Boeing has decided to close its operations in Wichita to reduce costs, increase efficiencies, and drive competitiveness," said Bass.

JP rained fire and brimstone the on the UPA government for its failure to pass get the Lokpal Bill passed in the Parliament. However, with the hasty induction of former UP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha, booted out by Mayawati for corruption, the saffron party has shot itself in the foot. Till a couple of weeks back the BJP leaders were firing on all cylinders attacking Maya and her coterie — of which Kushwaha was a key member. Now with the State polls approaching, the local leadership realised that they had little to offer and roped in Mayawati’s once most trusted confidante. In the process, however, all the ammunition the party’s national leaders spent in Delhi have been rendered blanks. The major Opposition party needs to realise that before it rolls up its sleeves to clean the Augean Stables it needs to set its house in order.
WHY WE LOVE Sanctions
A
s the EU joins the US in tightening sanctions on Iran, we would like to take time out to pay homage to this most wonderful of diplomatic tools. They seem to do the trick, so what if they target innocent civilians while allowing despotic fat cats to continue to make hay while a tyrannical sun shines. Sanctions look great on any country’s CV, because it basically means that although they would love to go to war and spill innocent blood, they are allowing pragmatism to rule the day. Will Iran crumble under the yoke of the latest measures? Unlikely, but what it will do is allow its bloody regime to oppress its citizens further. Hurrah for sanctions!
Cruelty to animals must stop The animal in us has always surfaced from time to time from time immemorial. Only we do not recognise it when we do it ourselves. Animal-animal fights, man-animal fights or even manman fights are a thing we associate with barbarians who lived in the past. For it to be happening even in this day is shocking, to say the least. And that it is happening in our own state is saddening all the more. What progress have we made? Let’s face it. If a handful of city dwellers start working on computers, it does not amount to progress. Pushpa Begumpet

T
he news that Mitt Romney had scraped past Rick Santorum to win the Iowa caucus came as welcome relief for those of us watching the most powerful nation on the planet (Sinophiles can object all they want) as it heads towards its November date with fate. Romney is a solid candidate, and is certainly the Republicans’ best bet to beat Obama. But it’s Mitt’s competitors that we should really be worried about. Close on his heels is Rick Santorum, and uber-conservative who once compared homosexuality to paedophilia and incest; then there are the equally loony trio of Newt Gingrich, Michelle Bachman and Rick Perry. The race looks to be between Romney and Santorum; whether Perry or Gingrich could steal their thunder is questionable, but not totally in the realm of fantasy. If the Republicans win back the White House in November, the US will herald a new age of conservatism that will target freedoms across the board, and while that is a matter of concern it seems to be a trend. Across the globe, liberals are being pushed to the sidelines to make way for a blinkered movement running on religious fervour and building on a foundation of ignorance. The new Age of Enlightenment that was supposed to dawn with the election of Obama has been short-lived and illusory. Even in this country, where we have constantly been buffeted by rabid religious sentiment, and a male-driven assumption that women must be oppressed, the years of financial prosperity have not quelled the moral fascists. The youth have been forced to live under the yoke of laws so archaic, that they have become anachronistic in the extreme. Women continue to be told what to wear and how to behave by hypocrites that hold the reins of power through corruption and fear. With Anna Hazare’s movement, liberal thinkers across the country braced themselves for a dawn that would bring forth a day where logic, science, and freedom would pre-

Middle East continues to simmer and rail against its tyrants, but the end result is far from set in stone. For India this is the moment to shine. To take the vanguard against the ill winds that blow. To show the world that a country so vibrant in its races and creeds can come together at the altar of Knowledge and pay homage to the gods of equality and freedom. But to do so, the rubble left by the socially retarded must be cleared; the self-proclaimed moral guardians must be silenced with democratic commands; and the people should wear their freedoms with pride. Thomas Paine may not have been thinking of a 21st Century India when he wrote the Rights of Man, but his vision holds as true for us today as it did for the French in 1789.

It is good if unfit candidates get filtered at the training level. There is no room for physical misfits in the uniformed forces. Law and order enforcing personnel need to themselves be fighting fit in order to be able to shoulder responsibilities entrusted on them. We don’t want criminals getting the better of law enforcers because of physical supremacy. When these candidates are not capable at this stage, imagine the condition when they have put in a few years of service and… lots of weight. Please do not entertain sympathy for them. verybody’s got some phase in life that they’d like to brush under the carpet and pretend it never affected them. Probably that big bully in school whose constant badgering changed the way you saw yourself. Maybe that teacher who put you down in front of peers only to lead you to question your capabilities at every stage in life. Or maybe that first boyfriend/girlfriend who jilted you and you’re now wary of getting into another relationship. Now imagine a situation where you could go back in time and change the way certain things affected you. Might sound far-fetched, but with the neuro linguistic programming (NLP) this is quite possible. Everybody perceives things differently. How one lets life affect them differs and it is this perception that is modified by experts to help a person adopt a fresh outlook towards life. “NLP can be used to change people’s attitude for better living. NLP is the school of psychological techniques that effectively communicates with the listener’s sub coconscious or unconscious mind. You can upgrade your mindset, intelligence, memory, senses, appearance and your communication skills. You can gain the ability to improve, enhance or modify any aspect of yourself,” says Satya T Murthy NLP master practitioner and trainer. He adds that through this technique a practitioner can change a patient’s perception of things/events that might have taken place in the past so that they can bring about a change in their attitude and see the world in a better light.

all the things that you do, control the thoughts in your mind and your personal feelings,” explains Satya, adding, “NLP helps you unravel unconscious beliefs, strengthen your positive views and eliminate the negative ones that block growth.” Practitioners during therapy
identify which incidents have had a lasting effect on the person’s character. These are then used to alter their perception by helping them see some positivity in that otherwise distressing incident. By doing so the person can see the past from a different angle and is then helped to move ahead in life. The NLP technique can be used on people with a traumatic past and can also be used in stress and trauma management. “NLP can be used in group sessions, workshops or in a oneto-one setting. It can be used to deal with a variety of issues including addictions, depression, phobias, self-esteem, obesity and many others. It can also be used to enhance personal performance at work. Simply put, the applications for NLP are pretty much without limits,” says Satya.
I am planning to go to Tirupati on Sunday. Can you give me something to delay my periods? It happens a bit too often nowadays, when I get an request, I am having a puja/a vacation/a ceremony/travelling or work can you give me something to postpone my periods? And it always makes me think, ‘When does an invention become a monster? When does a medication that was supposed to be for heavy periods, cycle control for hormonal irregularity, become something we chew on like peanuts?’ The even funnier part is the same mother who stops her daughter from taking ‘hormones’ for PCOD happily gives her these tablets for a puja! One easy way of understanding it would be like having a nicely moving machine and then suddenly throw a screw driver inside the machinery and hope nothing will happen. The menstrual cycle has a certain rhythm, which is upset when one suddenly introduces a medicine (all postponement pills are hormones)! Medications when given all through the month are safer than those thrown in out of the blue. The simple rule is what helps, can also harm and thus you could end up with inter menstrual spotting, increased clotting, very rarely strokes, irregular cycles and changed bleeding patterns. The common side effects of pills include breast tenderness, acne, bloating, nausea, headache, mood changes and dark spots on the face. So don’t take medication unless it’s absolutely necessary, learn to plan your vacations with your cycle in mind. Or else just accept it as a discharge and be a 21 century woman! Gastric bypass cuts death risk
WASHINGTON: Obese people who undergo gastric bypass surgery are less likely to die from heart attack and stroke than people who receive more conventional treatment for their weight condition, a Swedish study said on Tuesday. The study, published in the January 4 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, included about 4,000 patients in Sweden who were recruited between 1987 and 2001. The surgery patients either had gastric bypass (13.2 per cent), banding (18.7 per cent), or vertical banded gastroplasty (68.1 per cent), and all lost 1623 per cent of their body weight in subsequent years.
The control group did not have any type of surgery and showed a 0-1 per cent weight loss at follow-up periods of two, 10, 15 and 20 years. “Bariatric surgery was associated with reduced number of fatal heart attack deaths (22 in the surgery group vs. 37 in the control group),” said the study led by Lars Sjostrom of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Bariatric surgery was also linked to a lower number of heart attacks overall, fewer strokes, and fewer fatal strokes. But when the researchers looked at weight change alone, they could find no significant relationship to cardiovascular events in either group, suggest-
ing that the weight loss itself might not be the driver of fewer deaths. “There are many benefits to bariatric surgery and that some of these benefits are independent of the degree of the surgically induced weight loss,” said the study. Other studies have shown that the benefits of gastric surgery for extremely obese people can include long-term changes of body weight, better quality of life, and fewer incidences of diabetes and cancer. “The message is clear — bariatric surgery saves lives,” said Mitchell Roslin, chief of
obesity surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, who was not involved in the study. Roslin noted that the most common type of surgery in the study, vertical banded gastroplasty, has been replaced by newer methods that are even more effective, so the cardiovascular death risk is likely even lower today. As many as 200,000 gastric bypass operations, in which the stomach is sectioned off so that the smaller amounts of food can fit inside, are done annually in the United States, where about a third of people are obese. cup of coffee provides more than just conversations. Here are some unknown and surprising health benefits of coffee. n Coffee helps ward of depression For all those who believe that a cup of coffee makes their day, there is now proof. A study by the Harvard School of Public Health has proven that women have the habit of drinking fully caffeinated coffee have a 20 per cent lower risk of depression than non-coffee drinkers. n Coffee may help in healthy weight gain According to Chris Kilham, medical researcher and author of Psyche Delicacies, “When you drink coffee after a meal, it causes your body to more slowly process the meal you just ate.” David Levitsky, PhD, professor of nutritional science at Cornell University adds that, “Keep in mind, though, that java isn’t a miracle brew: Downing it after dinner won’t make the pounds melt away; rather, sipping a cup post-meal could, in small part, help promote a healthy weight.” n Coffee reduces the risk of cancer According to a new study by Bringham and Women’s Hospital, women who drink more than three cups of coffee a day had a 20 per cent lower risk for basal cell carcinoma and for men it was lowered by 9 per cent. The study does not mention anything about squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. n Addictive? Not really According to Liz Applegate, faculty member at the University of California states that, “Caffeine is a mild stimulant and the WHO has said that it would be wrong to compare coffee intake to drug addiction, as this can be controlled, however some drinkers have experienced symptoms of fatigue or irritability. n Coffee does not cause stomach pain According to Lauren Gerson, associate professor of medicine and gastroenterology at Stanford University School of Medicine, “There is no evidence from reviewed studies that coffee causes ulcers or more pain in patients with documented ulcers.” On the other hand drinking coffee may increase heartburn symptoms. Calories, not protein, boost body fat: study
Scientists succeed in growing sperm in lab dish
WASHINGTON: People who eat too much
LONDON: For the first time in the
of a high-calorie, low-protein diet tend to gain more fat than people who overeat protein, US researchers said Tuesday. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association included 25 people in Louisiana who agreed to live as inpatients in a weight-gain experiment for a 56-day period. Over the course of about two months, they were overfed by about 1,000 calories per day. Some were fed a diet that was five per cent protein, some ate 15 per cent protein — considered a nor-
mal level — and others ate 25 per cent or more of protein. The researchers’ aim was to uncover how different levels of protein might affect overall weight gain, body fat and energy expenditure. They found that people on the low-protein diet gained less weight overall, but that more of their extra energy was stored as fat than people on the mid-level and high-protein diets. Low-protein eaters gained about half as much as the others — putting on an average of 3.16 kilograms (seven pounds) during the study compared to 6.05 kg in the normal protein group and 6.51 kg in the high-protein group.
world, researchers have grown mouse sperm from a few cells in a lab potentially paving the way for infertile men to father their own children. Stefan Schlatt, professor at Muenster University in Germany and his team were able to grow sperm by using germ cells — cells in testicles responsible for sperm production. They grew the sperm by surrounding the germ cells in a special compound called agar jelly to create an environment akin to that of the testicles. Mahmoud Huleihel, professor at Ben Gurion University in Israel, who also
grew the sperm, said: “I believe it will eventually be possible to routinely grow human male sperm to order by extracting tissue containing germ cells from a man’s testicles and stimulating sperm production in the laboratory.”

STAR OF THE WEEK – RAJESH
R
ajesh, popularly known as Indraneel, is one of the most popular actors on TV in AP, thanks to Chakravakam and Mogali Rekulu. Both the TV serials are a rage and easily rate among the most-watched TV serials in the last few years. He tells Postnoon about his career so far.
A DAY AT THE RACES Sana Mirza
Luck is a drama series set at the Santa Anita horse racetrack and follows a number of characters whose lives intertwine as they frequent the same racing track
sana.m@postnoon.com
H
BO continues to be the most viewed television channel thanks to its brilliant lineup of shows. Latest to come from this media house is the pilot episode of its newest original drama series, Luck. Just after Boardwalk Empire wrapped up its second season finale, the channel is doing all that it can to get the viewers attention to promote the series, which starts only by the end of January. This new series will explore the provocative world of horse racing and gambling, shedding light on the lives of owners, jockeys, gamblers and diverse players. Luck begins with Gus (Dennis Farina) chauffer and right-hand man of Chester ‘Ace’ Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) picking him up as he is released from prison. On the drive back home, Ace, who can barely seem to contain his rage, discusses a plan to exact revenge on the people who were behind his serving a three-year jail term.
Few minutes into the show we are given to understand that Gus will serve as the horse’s owner in place of Ace, who will be guiding him from the sidelines.
Slowly, through a lot of vague horse-track jargon, we are introduced to the other characters. John Ortiz, a crabby horse trainer with a seedy reputation, goes by the name of Turo Escalante and is joined by a stammering agent, Joey Rathburn played by Richard Kind. Nick Nolte with his wistful ramblings is a down-and-out Kentucky horse trainer who is popularly referred to as ‘The Old Man’, looking for his second chance on the tracks, and is someone who believes he still possesses the knack for spotting a winner or ‘peaches’ as he likes to call them. If you think that’s an impressive line-up of actors for a TV series, you wouldn’t be too far off the mark. Luck has the ability of making any Hollywood blockbuster movie jealous with its starstudded supporting cast. Jason Gedrick and Kevin Dunn star as Jerry and Marcus respectively, who with their rumpled clothes, unshaven faces and disheveled looks make a curious pair. The show marks Hoffman’s foray into being a regular on television. The
series is under the charge of Academy Award nominated director Michael Mann and television writer, David Milch, who are considered to be two of the finest minds in the entertainment industry. While working together on the pilot episode, the two of them will executively produce the rest of the series. Though, the sneak preview was engaging, it was still very complicated and often puzzling, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the world of horse racing but like the rest of Milch’s work, Luck too, comes with a learning curve and seems nothing short of spectacular. While HBO may be known for its high-paced drama series and largerthan-life shows, Luck is sure to win the viewer’s attention who will come back to seek answers to the questions that arise from this introduction. We think this will be enough to get you to renew your HBO subscription. Luck officially begins its first season on HBO on January 29, 2012 and will be available to watch online.
=What was your first stint on TV? I started off as a TV anchor on ETV. I used to host Cineranjani. =What was your breakthrough serial? Chakravaka. =Best compliment you have received so far? People tell me that I am a versatile and intense artiste. Both Chakravakam and Mogali Rekulu have become so popular that people treat me like their own family. =Craziest experience you have had so far? Once, some college students, especially girls, spotted my car number and ended up chasing the car to meet me. I couldn’t believe their craze for me. (laughs) =What do you think is your USP? I think I am a romantic hero and I have already gotten enough recognition for that. =Awards won so far? I was given an award for most popular actor by Local TV. It was really a big deal for me. =What is the most interesting part about your job? TV artists spend so much time on the sets that the team becomes an extended family. It’s fun being with people whom you like to work with. But yes, it does get boring at times because the expressions are almost the same. (grins) =Favourite TV show? Bade Acche Lagte Hain on Colors TV. =Your favourite actress on TV? My wife, Meghana Raami. The bizarre part is that she played my mother-in-law’s role in Chakravakam. (laughs) =What would be your dream role? I would love to do the role of a dancer like Kamal Haasan in Sagara Sangamam. I am a trained Kuchipudi dancer and I think I can pull it off very easily. =If you had an unlimited budget to produce any show, which you wanted, what would you do? I would probably produce a show like Bigg Boss.
Weighing each step carefully T
he last two-three weeks of Bigg Boss is turning out to be quite boring! Specially when compared to previous seasons. And to fill that vacuum you see the contestants being given silly tasks, which do not help matters. The makers of Bigg Boss, by now should have come up with better fillers. Well, this week saw Sunny Leone’s exit from the house, which didn’t come as a surprise as
she was not entertaining in any way. Now with just five contestants left in the final week, it’s quite hard to come up with one name. But I hope it’s either Siddharth or Mahek Chahal! Juhi Parmar is not a pleasant personality at all, especially since we have seen what she is capable of. Same goes with Amar Upadhyay, who seems to be quite a shrewd player. I say, every person has a
Reality Bites Shiba Minai
combination of good and not-sogood habits. Like in the past, contestants have been accepted by the audience for what they are!
But, someone who manipulates and is pretentious is definitely not featuring in the top three as viewers can see through them. For instance Lakshmi or Siddharth, act like hooligans on the loose when they get into fights, but they also come across as honest people who have a clear conscience. This is one of the main reasons, I believe that has made them popular. Sky, on the other hand, has
been retained only because of his provocative nature, and the content he can provide to the show, which I feel is why he is doing it quite well. Mahek has been a slight disappointment as she seems to have become cautious, and appears to be weighing her words since her re-entry. However, Mahek continues to be popular, and I like her personality and hope either she or Siddharth walks away as the winner!

Making her debut in the Gen Next category of Lakmé Fashion Week is city-based designer Archana Rao and it’s a great moment for her

“F
or me it’s a dream come true. This is the first time I tried for Lakmé Fashion Week at the Gen Next category and I got selected,” exclaims a visibly excited Archana Rao. The 26-year-old designer, who is a graduate of NIFT Hyderabad, has a masters degree from the US has been selected from a host of other applicants to be a part of the upcoming season of LFW. Archana, who is currently a senior designer at NSL Textiles, has also worked in New York for a while before making her way back to Hyderabad. “I am essentially a womenswear designer and I also design accessories like bags and shoes, but, at NSL I am designing menswear,” quips Archana who
First time lucky
was deeply influenced by films in her pursuit to become a designer. “My love for clothes and all things beautiful began long ago. I used to watch a lot of movies while growing up and the only thing that remained with me was the memory of the costumes,” reminisces Archana fondly. Archana likes the art of storytelling and her collection for LFW is going to do the same. “I have been doing menswear for a year now and my womenswear collection has been inspired from menswear. The collection is
very efficient and though I have named it Prologue, the title doesn’t have anything to do with the collection. Prologue is more about me making my first appearance at LFW,” informs Archana about her collection that is made of high-processed fabrics interwoven with handloom. “The fabrics that I have used are not necessarily from Hyderabad alone but from all over AP and they also include Ikat. I have worked closely with weavers from Pochampally while designing this particular collection. There is a coarse effect to an otherwise fluid collection, the designs show a contrast between the contemporary and the ancient,” shares the designer who has also used a little bit of zardozi in the collection. The collection is very simple and has a soft colour palette and I have used indigo as the key colour. “I used indigo to give it a dye effect,” explains Archana, going onto add, “The collection consists of jackets, stylised trousers and dresses, which are tailored and structured.” Archana left a lot of room for styling in the collection since she wants to personalise them
according to the tastes of her clients. “You can see the simple style hidden in the detailing of the garments. An interesting thing about the collection is accidental design, it’s something done on purpose but looks accidental. My creations have a strong sense of style and it is, especially made for women like Alexa Chung, Chloe Sevigny and Lakshmi Menon,” explains Archana who feels that her designs are wearable, useful and efficient. “I think of fashion as functional art and I want to make things that you can touch and feel. My aesthetic is minimalistic, contemporary and understated. “I like playing with the struc-
ture of the garment and experimenting with various proportions. Texture and prints are also something that I am interested in developing,” says the young designer. According to her, there has been a lot of change in the Hyderabad fashion scene over the past few years. She says, for instance, street fashion is making inroads into the city. “With more people travelling, one can see a diversity in style in the city and I really like the style of those people selling their wares at the traffic signals. There was a shirt over a lehenga, which I found chic, I think people should look around themselves more and use what is available to style themselves,” signs off Archana.

Sankranthi BO race narrows down I
n a major development, Sunil, Isha Chawla starrer Poola Rangadu has pulled out of the Sankranthi boxoffice race. Earlier, four films including The Businessman, Bodyguard, Nippu and Poola Rangadu were supposed to release between January 11 and January 14. However, Nippu and Poola Rangadu have been postponed by at least two weeks since there is acute shortage of theatres during Sankranthi. RR Moviemakers and Bellamkonda Suresh, who are releasing The Businessman and Bodyguard respectively, have booked most of the screens during Sankranthi leaving very little space for other films. Now, we hear that Tarakaratna’s Nandeeswarudu will release during Sankranthi, instead of Poola Rangadu. With Shankar’s Snehitudu slated for release on January 26, sources say that it’ll be extremely tough for other films to get a good number of theatres later this month.

Nikhil’s Disco to release in February

new film titled Disco starring Nikhil and Sarah Sharma is in its last stages of filming. Directed by Hari, the film is touted to be a mass entertainer. Nikhil’s recent film Veedu Theda did quite well at the box office, especially in B and C centres and the actor is quite confident about Disco’s success as well. Most part of the film has been shot in Bangkok and Hyderabad. Mantra Anand has composed the music. The film might hit the screens by mid-February.
anchu Manoj has the reputation of being a daredevil when it comes to shooting action sequences in his films. The breathtaking stunts in Nenu Meeku Thelusa and Bindaas are proof enough of his bravado. Now, he has added another feather to his cap. For his upcoming film titled Mr.Nokia, Manchu Manoj has penned lyrics for two songs. Actors penning lyrics seems to be the latest trend with Dhanush leading the pack with the smash hit Why this Kolaveri Di? Mr.Nokia has been under production for quite some time. Ani has directed the film and Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music. Kriti Kharbanda and Sana Khan are playing the lead roles opposite Manchu Manoj. The film’s audio is expected to release by mid-January.

ollywood is always open to talent, be it from any part of the world. You have examples of the gorgeous Katrina Kaif who arrived from London, eight years ago and is now among the top-rated actors of the Hindi film industry. Or Imtiaz Ali’s new find Nargis Fakhri, an American fashion model, who is now the latest pin-up. And this trend of foreign talent entering Bollywood is not restricted to women alone. Surprisingly, most of this talent seems to be coming from Pakistan. In the past few years, Bollywood has witnessed a large inflow of talent from the Pakistani film industry in acting as well as singing. You have Adnan Sami whose songs are very popular with youngsters, Atif Aslam who became an instant rage all over because of his husky voice and drop-dead good looks, and of course Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the nephew of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who has the whole country crooning to his songs, with the numbers and names increasing year by year. Look into the acting department and you have people like singer Ali Zafar, who along with singing is also wowing the audience with his acting skills. Then there are the controversy queens like Meera who was seen in movies like Kasak and Nazar. She was in the news for kissing her co-actor in a movie, unfortunately her on-screen antics did not go down well with the public back home and she was subjected to a lot of criticism. Her recent claim of being harassed by an Indian film director too, did not work for her flailing career. Speaking of controversies, one cannot forget Veena Malik, the former girlfriend of tainted Pakistani cricketer Mohammed Asif. She became a household name through Bigg Boss where her relationship with her house-mate Ashmit Patel kept her in the news. Not willing to be forgotten, her recent nude photoshoot with FHM magazine raised quite a few eyebrows and earned her a lot of publicity. Sanjay Gadhvi, the director of Dhoom, feels it’s the talent that matters rather than the origin. “As a filmmaker, I look at the tal-
ent and not the roots. The entertainment industry is all about talent and saleability, if you have that, it does not matter where you come from,” he shares, adding, “It is a common thread running through the entertainment industry globally. Be it Bollywood or Hollywood, one can see so much talent coming from different parts of the world like Jacqueline Fernandez from Sri Lanka or Penelope Cruz in Hollywood who is of Spanish origin. It’s a give and take business, they need exposure, we need the talent. We welcome anyone who fits our requirements; in return they get a global platform. Pakistan has delivered good talent from the times of Ghulam Ali and if there is more coming up, we will welcome them with open arms,” he explains. Imran Abbas, the latest import from Pakistan, makes his debut in Bollywood opposite the Khiladi Kumar in his upcoming movie. An architect by profession, he has been active in the Pakistan film industry by acting in a lot of soaps. While we see talent pouring in from all corners of the world, music composer Salim Merchant wonders why it is a big deal if the talent is coming from another country. “From the times of Mehdi Hasan we have had many people entertaining us and the legacy has been kept alive with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and now there is more young talent following. Talent does not have any borders, so whatever the political situation may be, music and skill has, and will always be welcomed in the industry,” he shares. Another factor that makes these stars a favourite is because of our obsession with fair-skinned people. Bollywood critic and analyst, Komal Nahta feels talent from Pakistan merges more easily and is acceptable due to its Asian descent. “Although we admire and welcome talent from everywhere, the audience relates easily to these foreign stars because of the similar features and cultural base. Talent from the West is welcome too, but with Pakistan the acceptance is faster,” he adds. Komal Nahta also mentions that despite the political disparity, our Pakistani stars have always given the audience lots to wow about.

Popular Hindi songs are now titles of TV shows J
ust what happens to creativity when it comes to titles? From ongoing TV soaps like Kuch Toh Log Kahenge and Bade Acche Lagte Hain to the forthcoming Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuuch Kaha and Kya Hua Tera Vaada, it appears that authors expend all their energy in writing scripts and fall back on well-loved film songs for titles. Clearly, Hindi movie songs down the ages are an easy inspiration for a host of television serials with the makers also hoping for instant connect. Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, a hit song picturised on Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna in Amar Prem, is now the title of Indian adaptation of the popular Pakistani serial Dhoop Kinare. Mohnish Behl and Kritika Kamra are the protagonists in the love story of a 40-plus guy and a 20something girl. The title of Ekta Kapoor’s Bade
Acche Lagte Hain is picked up from the song in the 1976 movie Balika Badhu, about the arranged marriage of two teenagers, played by Sachin Pilgaonker and Rajni Sharma. The TV show revolves around a business tycoon in his early 40s and a working woman in her late 30s who are brought together by an arranged marriage. There are many other instances. Dekha Ek Khwaab, has been taken from the evergreen song Dekha ek khwaab toh yeh silsilay hue picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha in the 1981 film Silsila. The show is a story of a young girl who lives in a chawl but is actually a princess. The title of Star Plus’ new show Ruk Jana Nahi is a lift from Ruk jana nahi tu kahin haar ke from the 1974 film Imtihaan starring Vinod Khanna, while Diya Aur Bati is based on the song from Anil Kapoor-Tabu starrer Viraasat. The 8-yearold and his pops left the born-to-be-wild biker gear at home, instead opting for lightweight layers to shield themselves from LA’s most-unwintery 75-degree sunshine.
Michael scores a guest spot on House A fter closing out his guest spot on Parenthood in the fall, Michael B Jordan is headed back to the small screen for a guest spot in House’s 14th episode, playing a blind patient, the studio confirms to EW. Jordan spilled the news via Twitter, but it appears he may have done so prematurely. The tweet has since disappeared from his feed, and later, he tweeted, “My bad @foxbroadcasting.” and “Now I know never to tweet before the studio approves. hahha #socialnetworkisinsane.” Jordan previously starred on Friday Night Lights as quarterback Vince Howard. House, currently in its 8th season, returns January 9, with a two hour episode.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Federer, Nadal on course for clash Richard Eaton
DOHA: Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal kept on course for a meeting in the opening ATP final of the season as both eased into the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open here on Wednesday. Federer, the Grand Slam record-holder from Switzerland, delivered a smooth and graceful performance for the second successive day in beating Grega Zemlja, a qualifier from Slovenia, 6-2, 6-3 in only an hour. Nadal, the French Open
champion from Spain, produced a higher level than during his opening day struggle, overcoming Denis Gremelmayr, a fellow lefthander from Germany, by 6-2, 6-2. In a contest of well-contested
QATAR OPEN rallies though he needed half an hour longer than Federer. Nevertheless Nadal did seem to be achieving some of his new year objectives — in particular playing more aggressively, and
getting used to a heavier headed racket. “I am also trying to return [serve] a little bit better,” he said. “The worst things I did last year was with my return. I was happy with the way my return worked today.” Federer next plays Italian eighth seed Andreas Seppi, the eighth-seeded Italian, who overcame another Spaniard, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 7-5, 6-3. Nadal plays Mikhail Youzhny, and the seventh seeded Russian may have the ability to make Nadal raise his standard again.

Peterhansel takes lead as Al-Attiyah struggles RESULTS
CHILECITO: France’s Dakar Rally legend Stephane Peterhansel took the overall lead in the car section here on Wednesday after winning the fourth stage, a 326km special from San Juan to Chilecito. The 46-year-old Mini driver, a six-time Dakar motorcycling champion and three-time car winner, endured a miserable day on Tuesday when he suffered two punctures but on Wednesday it was the turn of Qatar’s defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah to have a nightmare. The 31-year-old’s Hummer broke down after 288km of the stage and only got going again after a 15-minute stop, leaving AlAttiyah seventh overall and over

half an hour off the pace. While he fumed, Peterhansel came in 5min 19sec ahead of Argentinian driver Orlando Terranova, while the latter’s fellow Toyota driver, experienced South African Giniel De Villiers, was third, 6min 42sec adrift. Peterhansel, though, was not so happy that he had re-taken the overall lead. “I would have preferred not to lead the field tomorrow [Thursday], since there will be no motorcycle tracks,” he said. “This is not what I would have liked from a tactical point of view, but I think the others made a lot of mistakes, so we will race at the front.” Defending motorcycling champion Marc Coma had earlier won the bikes stage, rebounding from a poor day on Tuesday, when he had lost the overall lead. The 35-year-old KTM rider came in ahead of main rival and team-mate Cyril Despres.

Chris Bosh added 22 points while Dwyane Wade did not play, sitting out with a bruised left foot. “Just trying to be as smart as I can right now,” Wade said. “I haven’t had my lift because I haven’t been able to explode. You play through pain but you have got to take a look at it. “It’s the kind of thing that’s day-to-day. It feels good one moment, it doesn’t the other.” Roy Hibbert led the Pacers with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Heat stayed one game
NBA atop the Southeast division ahead of Orlando, which improved to 5-2 by ripping Washington 103-85, knocking the Wizards to 0-6, the worst start in franchise history. Dwight Howard scored 28 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to power the Magic to victory while Ryan Anderson added 23 points and 15 rebounds.
Thousands of Olympic tickets oversold LONDON: Organisers of the London 2012 Olympics on Wednesday admitted they had mistakenly oversold tickets for synchronised swimming sessions, leading to thousands being offered tickets to other events. Some 10,000 tickets were meant to go on offer in the second round of sales for four of the sessions in the aquatics centre but 20,000 were made available due to human error, organisers revealed. Officials contacted around 3,000 ticket-holders and offered them access to more prestigious events — includ-
ing the men’s 1,500m athletics final — that they had previously applied for unsuccessfully. “As a result of finalising the seating configurations in our venues and reconciling the millions of Olympic and Paralympic ticket orders against the seating plans for around 1,000 sporting sessions, we have discovered an error in seats available in four synchronised swimming sessions,” said a London 2012 spokesperson. The extra tickets will come from a batch of one million contingency tickets that will go on sale in May.

India have their back to the wall
Kohli fined 50% of match fee SYDNEY: India batsman Virat Kohli was fined 50 percent of his match fee after making a finger gesture to the crowd during the second Test against Australia in Sydney, team officials said on Thursday. Kohli was pictured in Thursday’s newspapers showing home fans his middle finger during Wednesday’s second day of the match and subsequently received a leveltwo offence sanction by match referee Ranjan Madugalle. India team media manager G.S. Walia said
Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur
n Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey continued their
torture of Indian bowlers by putting on 334 runs. Clarke played one of the finest Test innings at Sydney. n Clarke scored more runs in an innings than India
could muster abroad starting in England. His unbeaten 329 was all the more remarkable as he came in to bat with Australia 3/37. n The Indian bowlers were tighter this morning and
runs were initially hard to come by. They have done a fairly good job considering that there has been no support from the batsmen in the series. n Gautam Gambhir has struck form. India’s batsmen
kept the scoreboard ticking in the second innings, which was important. The loss of Rahul Dravid late in the day was crucial. n The wicket has now turned out to be a great one
for batting. India do not have much chance in the match with the 468-run lead. But with the right attitude and a little help of the rain gods, who may make an appearance tomorrow, there is a faint glimmer of hope of saving Sydney.

Kohli had been informed of the charge on Thursday and had pleaded guilty to making the gesture. “The matter has been sorted out... the player felt guilty and sorry and the matter has been closed,” Walia told reporters. “When he went to the match referee, he said sorry and that out of emotions ‘I must have done it’.” Kohli’s indiscretion came during a frustrating day in the field for India when Australia’s batsmen posted 366 runs for the loss of just one wicket.

RECORDS TUMBLE AS CLARKE, HUSSEY GO ON RUN FEAST SYDNEY: Michael Clarke set new records and Michael Hussey claimed his 16th Test century as Australia piled on the misery against India in the second Test in Sydney on Thursday. Clarke surpassed V.V.S. Laxman’s 281 for the highest individual score in Australia-India Tests and also overtook the great Don Bradman’s 270 as the best by an Australian captain in a home Test, a record that had stood since 1936. The Australian skipper received a standing ovation when he eclipsed the 109-year highest score at the SCG, fittingly in its 100th Test match, of 287, registered by Englishman Reg Foster. At lunch, Australia had swelled their lead to 392 runs at 583 for four with Clarke unbeaten on 293 and Hussey not out 111. Clarke had batted for 558 minutes and faced 424 balls with 35 fours and
one six. India’s bowlers were powerless to stem the tide and face a mammoth task to keep the four-Test series alive after going down by 122 runs in the opening Melbourne Test. The Indians have never won a series in Australia. Hussey claimed his 16th century in his 68th Test, following his fighting 89 in Melbourne. He scampered through for a single of Virender Sehwag for his hundred 20 minutes before lunch. The West Australian left-hander shared in an unbroken 258-run stand with Clarke for the fifth wicket and the second double-century partnership of the Australian first innings. Clarke and Ponting put on an Australian record 288-run partnership for any wicket against India on Wednesday.

SYDNEY: Australia struck two early blows, removing opener Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid as India on Thursday fought desperately to save the second Test in Sydney after Michael Clarke scored 329 in a mammoth 659 for four declared. Captain Clarke declared Australia’s first innings closed for a huge lead of 468 runs on day three of the match. Clarke’s unbeaten innings leaves him behind only Matthew Hayden (380), Mark Taylor (334) and Don Bradman (334) in the all-time list for Australian batsmen. Mike Hussey was beaten on 150. India had an early stumble in their second innings when Sehwag was brilliantly plucked from the air by the athletic David Warner at point off Ben Hilfenhaus for four to leave the tourists a shaky 18 for one. At tea, India, who have never won a Test series in Australia, were 113 for two with Gautam Gambhir on 65 and Sachin Tendulkar not out three. Clarke’s score ranked joint 14th in the list of highest Test innings behind West Indian world record holder Brian Lara’s 400. He was at the crease for 617 minutes. He faced 468 balls with 39 fours and one six. Clarke surpassed VVS Laxman’s 281 for the highest individual score in Australia-India Tests and also overtook the great Bradman’s 270 as the best by an Australian captain in a home Test, a record that had stood since 1936. Magpies stun Man United Rob Woollard
LONDON: Newcastle sent Manchester United spinning to their second consecutive Premier League defeat on Wednesday to give Manchester City a vital edge in the title race. Goals from Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and a late Phil Jones own goal clinched a deserved 3-0 victory for Newcastle at St James Park, as United missed the chance to go level on points with City at the top of the table. The defeat means United, beaten by Blackburn at Old Trafford in their last outing at the weekend, now trail City by three points after the league leaders downed Liverpool 3-0 at Eastlands on Tuesday. “The story of the game is they had two fantastic goals which put them in the driving seat and they weren’t going to lose it,” United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said.
“We have had our opportunity and it’s advantage to Man City. We don’t normally have back-to-back defeats but the plus
point is we had some players back tonight. “It’s not a time for panic, we have the experience to cope with it.”
Carlo Ancelotti has eyes set on PSG’s global brand PARIS: David Beckham may have elected not to sign up for the Paris SaintGermain revolution, but new coach Carlo Ancelotti’s remit -- to turn PSG into one of the world’s biggest clubs -- remains the same. PSG spent heavily last summer but their signings were mainly tried and tested Ligue 1 performers such as Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro and Saint-Etienne holding midfielder Blaise Matuidi. By appointing Ancelotti, QSI therefore hope to make the French top-flight’s perennial under-achievers
a more attractive prospect for players of genuine global renown. Stardust and Champions League experience are key priorities, and sources close to QSI told AFP this week that they have sanctioned bids totalling 61.5 million euros ($80m) for AC Milan forward Alexandre Pato and Real Madrid playmaker Kaka. The incoming coach has pledged not to meddle unduly with a team that went into the winter break leading Ligue 1 by three points.
