THE GREAT CAMEL

COMEBACK

GOVT HOPES FOR

BOOZE BONANZA

Hit by a vehicle on Panjagutta flyover and left to the apathy of rubbernecking onlookers, the future looked bleak for this camel. But thanks to the City’s traffic police and the Blue Cross, it is now making a swift recovery. Postnoon followed the animal as it was taken from the flyover to the Blue Cross where it spent the night recuperating under the watchful gaze of the shelter’s employees. We hope it finally finds a home where it can live the life it was supposed to... free and unmolested by cruel humans.

Snubbed by liquor barons over the draw-by-lot system of allotting liquor licenses, the AP excise department is seriously considering advising the government to enter the retail sale of alcohol.

People invested anything from `20 lakh to `60 lakh each. However, recently the investors found that each flat has 4-5 owners and their builder has bolted. received 16 complaints involving nearly `7 crore. We have formed a special team to nab this builder.” According to the police Srinivas, 51, had successfully completed four housing projects, which earned him public trust. Two years ago he floated two more in Gandhinagar basti, titled “Susheela Mansion” and “Kounain Towers” and got bookings for both. Each buyer shelled out large sums of money. While one project has 12 flats, the other has 25 flats. It now appears that each flat was registered against 4-5 people. The cheating came to light on June 26 when people found no response to telephone calls and on enquiry found his home vacated. Srinivas belongs to Siddipet of Medak. His father Dr Balraj is a popular medical practitioner there. Srinvias came to the City a few years ago and got into real estate, while he himself did not own a house, or at least, not known to have owned as per the information available till today.

CBI. Vijaya Sai Reddy was later released on bail. The CBI which has questioned Jagan both before and after the arrest was not satisfied with the information they could get from him. The agency has complained to the court that the accused was deliberately avoiding replies to its questions and requested for permission to make him and his deputy undergo narco-analysis tests. However, lawyers of both the accused have argued that

a narco-analysis test was against the constitutional and legal rights of their clients. Using the technique of self-incrimination was not only forbidden in law, but also unconstitutional, they maintained. They also quoted Supreme Court judgments terming this test as illegal. The information received through questioning of an accused in a state of semi- consciousness under the influence of drugs is only treated as circumstantial evidence. NSS

NEWS BRIEFS Newly-wed paralytic woman found dead in lake

A

missing woman, Zakiya Begum, who was a partly paralytic was found dead in the Himayatsagar Lake, the Rajendranagar police said. Tragically, the 25-year-old Zakiya had got married only four months ago. A resident of Najamnagar, in Kishan Bagh in the Old City, she was married to a local man who earned a living through odd-jobs. She is disabled by a hand and a leg. She was missing from her in-laws' home since June 25 but the missing complaint was lodged much later. The Rajendranagar police appeared reluctant to give full information. They termed it a suicide. Police man on duty said the body was fished out from Himayatsagar lake the day before. But how a paralytic person travelled all this distance and committed suicide has not yet been probed. The police hazarded a guess that she may have hired an autorickshaw or got into a bus to go to the lake and jump to her death. Again, the police have so far failed to establish the motive. Why would a newly-wed woman commit suicide? Dowry harassment is blamed, but the police are wishy-washy about the issue. The in-laws and husband are yet to be interrogated while her poor parents are grieving.

State tops list of defaulters, Transco continues to bleed In spite of mounting dues, government bodies continue to delay payment of APTransco bills

hat happens when the government, supposed to protect its protégé, neglects it? A classic instance is the massive dues the governmental institutions owe to the AP Transmission Corporation (APTransco) in the State which in turn is having convulsions. When a high-level meeting was convened in May and notices were served to municipal administration, it was found that various public entities owed the APTransco a sum of `335 crore up to April this year. The customary notices warned of severing the lines with 15 days if not paid but the Transco knows it is a scarecrow and notices have only notional impact. Key defaulter among the public departments is the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board, owing a massive `160 crore in Current Consumption Charges to the CPDCL of APTransco. The Board’s plans of increasing tariff rates for water supply have failed to shore up any great revenue, current and cumu-

lative dues to the CPDCL dry its finances out. Also in the list is the GHMC that owes nearly `7 crore to the CPDCL in dues. Surprisingly, the Department of Municipal Administration is not the one to top the list. The Panchayat Raj departments owed nearly `644 crore to the power company by the end of April. Also in the league are medical, health and sanitation, and irrigation departments. The departmental policy of disconnecting power supply to its defaulters has failed to have any effect on the municipal administration departments. Govt hopes for booze bonanza Snubbed by liquor barons over the draw-by-lot system of allotting liquor licenses, the AP excise department is seriously considering advising the government to enter the retail sale of alcohol

GOVERNANCE Inkeshaf Ahmed

Yes, we are seriously mulling over setting up our own shops through AP Beverages Corporation Limited. A final decision will be taken in the next couple of days

ahmed.m@postnoon.com

T

he lottery system was not a terrific success, thanks mainly to the covert cartel of liquor barons. The excise department could not allot 679 liquor shops as there were no takers. Of the 6,596 liquor shops across AP, 5,917 were auctioned recently. Lottery system that favoured the unexpected and the huge licence fee are cited as reasons for the traders keeping away. The State government had, on June 18, announced its new liquor policy for the year 2012-13 after holding marathon sessions with various stakeholders. The policy has been formulated in the wake of the Anti-Corruption Bureau inquiry into controversial liquor syndicate issue that figured in an AP High Court case.

MMA Farooqi , deputy commissioner

6,596 The number of liquor shops across the State. Of these 5,917 were auctioned recently

The State government thought it would earn about `2,600 crore against a total income of about `3,400 crore earned during the last auction. But hopes were dashed as the gap of expectation and realisation came to `600 crore. Liquor is the bread of the

government. A lot of the popular schemes that politicians announce like `2 a kg of rice are dependent on liquor revenue. This revenue, again, is the least expensive to collect. “Yes, we are seriously mulling over setting up our own shops through AP Beverages Corporation Limited.

A final decision will be taken in the next couple of days,” MMA Farooqi, deputy commissioner of excise department in Hyderabad, told Postnoon. As part of the new action plan, officials from the excise department are pondering over roping in retired excise staff to run these shops at various places across the State. The idea is to sell liquor at MRP to consumers and prevent irregularities. It is being said that in Hyderabad alone a total of 81 shops did not have any takers. According to Farooqi the fixing of `1.04 crore as license fee in Greater Hyderabad region is the reason for the lack of response. “The license fee is large. It is the prime reason for many people to ignore the auction of liquor shops,” he said. In Greater Hyderabad region a total of 166 liquor shops including Hyderabad did not have any takers.

Trouble brewing in Dhoolpet Sudeshna koka Sudeshna.k@postnoon.com

T

hey came to the City centuries back with the kings and have made Hyderabad their home ever since. During the rule of the Nizams, the Lodhi Kshatriya community, from Uttar Pradesh, earned a living by making and selling gudumba (locally distilled liquor) for the working class. There was a time when the trade flourished, despite being illegal. However, today it’s only the women from the community who continue with the liquor brewing and have taken this up as a challenge to earn a living. “What can we do? The men in our community don’t work. All they do is eat sleep and drink. Abject poverty is forcing us to brew this liquor to earn some money,” said Suman, a community member. More than 200 families have been living in the Dhoolpet area for the last several decades making gudumba. Incidentally, a majority of the women in the community suffer from several health complications. But the lack of livelihood options drive them on to stick to their trade. “I did not have a choice. I have been making gudumba since childhood. The heat generated while brewing the liquor is very dangerous and I lost my vision due to it. First I got my right eye treated at a private hospital and paid `15,000. Last month I got my left eye treated but this time I did not have so much money, so I went to a government hospital. Nobody else in my family works, and I have no choice but to continue with the trade, regardless of my ill health,” said Aruna Bai who is still recovering and walks around with dark glasses. Several women from the community suffer from severe health ailments due to the chemicals and toxins released while brewing the liquor. Take the instance of Sarala Bai, a widow with two sons and two daughters. She has dark patches around her neck and face. When asked what caused the unsightly patches, she said, “These are the side effects of our business. I have been brewing gudumba for more than 40 years

SPOTLIGHT ON DHOOLPET On the flip side Gudumba, a commonly found illicit liquor, has time and again been the cause of many health ailments. It is said that this form of liquor contains toxic substances like ammonia and uric acid that affect various organs. Women who make and consume this liquor have suffered from problems when it comes to bearing children and various other reproductive problems. Many of them have also complained of cold shoulder and pain in the limbs as a result of constantly stirring the liquor. Other problems associated with gudumba include various skin problems, kidney problems and the most commonly seen problems are related to vision. The heat produced during the process of brewing the liquor is said to be the culprit.

now, so this common. This is only a visible effect, but there are several other problems we suffer from as well. For instance, I suffer from severe hand, leg and neck pain due to the long hours I spend standing while brewing the liquor and lifting heavy vats.

There have been days when I have suffered from terrible hand pain and a frozen shoulder as well, but have carried on.” But for some, the pain is just too great to continue in the trade. Mitali Bai, a senior citizen, added, “I have given up making gudumba only because of the frozen shoulder and hand pain that I have been suffering from for so many years.” While brewing and selling gudumba might be the only way out for many of the community members, health issues sometimes force them to give it up. The community members start at a very young age and more often than not by the age of 40, they are victims of severe health issues. Incidentally, brewing gudumba also affects their reproductive systems. Most women cannot have children after the age of 20, thus child marriage is a norm in their culture. Brewing liquor aside, the poor hygiene in their surroundings is also responsible for their health conditions, believes Mohamed Khan, a local doctor. “The conditions in which they live are very bad. It’s unhygienic; mosquitoes are always breeding here thereby spreading diseases. Water in the area is also contaminated most of the time. To make the liquor they use jaggery and while cleaning it ammonia and uric acid are released, which is not good for their health. This is the main cause for all their health problems,” he explained. Addiction is another problem. According to the community members they taste and run a ‘quality check’ on the gudumba before packing it. This, causes the addiction, they say. “Most of their health problems are because they drink gudumba on a daily basis. This effects their lungs and kidneys in the long run,” complained Dr Khan. However, the women shrug it off as their fate. “We do not have much of a choice, do we? We cannot go out to work, nor can we depend on our husbands,” say the women from the community. “Kuch paana hai toh kuch khona padta hai. Abhi yehi meri zindagi hai. Kya karein (to gain something, we have to lose something. this is my life now. What can I do?),” said Aruna with a resigned smile.

The women of the Lodhi Kshatriya community choose to brew liquor to earn a living. But it comes at a cost. From loss of vision, frozen shoulders, severe pain in the limbs, skin problems to trouble conceiving, women from this community bear it all N SHIVA KUMAR

ave an idea for a startup company? Looking for likeminded people to get started? Worry not, a startup event is being planned in July, the aim of which is to help startup companies in 54 hours. According to C Chaitanya, an organiser of Startup Weekend Hyderabad, most of the slots available for the event have been sold out. He says that mobile apps are a favourite among the crowd in the City. Though participants are open to build anything, people mostly opt for mobile apps, web apps, or social network-related startups as they are easier to prototype. Apps are certainly a favourite with the crowd and some very innovative apps have come out of Startup Weekend in the past, he said. This time around the event will be organised at ISB, Wadhwani Centre for Entrepreneurship Development on July 13–15. Participants will need to come up with a minimum viable product within three days as part of the event and not just ideate. This is just the second time that the event is being organised in the City, but on an international level, there have been startups such as Zaarly and Foodspotting which were ideated at the event and went on to become popular the world over. Since this started in India only

How does it work?

n the first day attendees present their ideas and the best of them are voted on. Groups are formed based on these ideas and they start working on prototypes. They can approach coaches who will be at the venue in case they run into an obstacle. On the final day they will present their projects, which will be followed by a Q&A and awards.

last year, there have not yet been notable startups from the country. But startups coming out of Startup Weekend across the world have been successful. For example, Zaarly is a well-known example. Other examples include Launchrock, Saygent, etc. Chaitanya says that though the startup scene in Bangalore may be more advanced, startup enthusiasts here believe in more action and less talk. The startup scene is certainly very active in Hyderabad as could be

witnessed at the ITs AP event organised by the government. The Start-up Saturday events are also very popular here, he said. “With the presence of the many engineering colleges in the City, start ups find it easier to find talent. Also the startup community is helpful. The real estate is cheaper when compared to other cities like Bangalore. But most important is the student community,” he added. GHMC camp turns out to be a ‘damp squib’ GHMC Md Nizamuddin feedback@postnoon.com

T

he recently concluded ‘sports summer camps’, under the aegis of the GHMC were nothing more than a damp squib, reveals a senior official. With most of the sports events taking place during the period of April and May, the corporators took mileage by officially inaugurating the camps in their localities. But the very next day, the grounds wore a deserted look. The children who were supposed to be playing with the equipment were on their own. “How can they play with the equipment when it was deposited

with the local corporator?” questioned a senior official from the North Zone. The North Zone, which has a great number of sports facilities, has failed to cater to the needs of

youngsters at the summer camp. A ground in Secunderabad was left useless when the contractor filled it with waste. Alwal which has one of the biggest sports facilities in the area,

rarely has youngsters interested in sports. Inaugurated on April 27 by Shankar Rao, in North Zone the response for all the games should have been overwhelming. But due to the sports equipment being under the control of local politicians, most of the 333 centres could not meet expectations. “ Even though the summer sports event concluded in May, the demand for sports equipment did not end. For instance, the corporator of Padmarao Nagar has come up with a list of sports equipment on behalf of each of the ‘sports associations’. “I do not know what the corporators will do with the sports equipment when there are only few grounds in the locality,” an official wondered.

an’ s cruelty knows no bounds. An aged camel, driven hard by three kids for a thrill, struggled to gallop along the Punjagutta flyover yesterday afternoon and in the process was hit by a passing vehicle. It collapsed in pain, bleeding and bleating haplessly. The scared children abandoned it and ran to tell the owner. It lay bleeding for hours as people and vehicles passed by after throwing it a casual look. Postnoon’s photographer Srinivas Setty, who was passing by, spotted the animal and got down to enquire. People who felt sympathy for the animal did not know what to do. Meanwhile, seeing the traffic jam, a traffic cop called his seniors and got a tow truck, which finally took the injured beast to the City’s only animal shelter — Blue Cross. Three hours had passed by then. At Blue Cross, the medical assistants administered drugs and sedatives to the suffering animal under instructions from the consultant veterinarian. When Setty revisited the animal

this morning, the camel was up on its legs, munching leaves and nodding happily. N Krishna, medical attendant, told Postnoon that the antibiotic drugs and sedatives helped the animal and it was back to normal by morning. 6

Tablet to make students smart Prudhvi Raju K prudhvi.k@postnoon.com

H

ow beautiful is to look your child catching a school bus without having the burden of heavy bag.? How good is to know your child performance in a particular chapter and exercise rather than simply in the whole subject? This all will become a reality soon with digital learning catching across the world. Tablet manufactures like Datawind, Celkon had already revealed their plans to bring a tablet for below $100, which will soon make every student to afford and access tablet. However, the City-based Pressmart, an online publishing provider, has built e-learning ecosystem based on tablets to make a tablet, a holistic learning device. MOCA (Mobile learning Classroom Application) creates a win-win situation for all the stakeholders in the learning process from publishers, teachers, academic counsellors, parents and students. The sense of touch, video and audio will add value to student learning. For instance, a student reading a lesson about Gandhi, by touching the picture which is there on the e-book will take him to Porbandar in Gujarat on Google maps, making a student understand the exact location in India where Gandhi is born rather than simply knowing the words of his birth place. A student learning about

duck and how it quacks can better understand and feel it by seeing the video, said Vik Torpunuri, chairman, Pressmart. The teachers can test the students by setting up quizzes, homework, exams all on the tablet. They also get the results by touch of a button and can mail it to across the parents. The parents and teachers will also get to know the minute details of students’ performance in each and every subject. For instance, if a student is not good at trigonometry, the teacher and parent can put their time and

effort making their student comfortable in that particular subject area. Talking about cost savings he said, This will also bring better revenues to publisher by cutting down their costs. Traditionally, publishers’ business model is to print a book, distribute, store, display and sell it. However, with e-learning solutions they are becoming content managers. They can write the content and push it to the digital store and sell it off, excluding all the steps in the supply chain and reduce costs. They can edit and update

the content at any point of time. The schools do not need to use papers and Xerox machines and can also increase efficiency levels of their human resource. MOCA will also take the physical and content security of the tablet. The tablet is backed up every day while putting in the relevant doc in the class. All the entertainment apps and sites will be jammed, when the student enters in to the school area. The parent can also track the location of the student once he leaves the school and can wipe off the content by touch of a button if it falls in the wrong hands. They can also know the student’s attendance in a digital format and answer to the permission slips, added Vik. Pressmart deployed this application in La Salle Green Hills School in Manila, Thailand at a price of $100 per student per year with a contract of 4-5 years. This probably the first school in the world to go 100 per cent digital from class 1-12 by using 8.9inch Samsung tablet which runs in Google Honeycomb operating system. Pressmart aims to bring this application to India and is in talks with handful of schools and launching pilot projects this academic year. It is also aiming to configure it according to the needs of coaching institutes, colleges and other academic institutions. The company is also ready to provide services to government schools depending on their requirements based on the infrastructure provided.

Monti, Merkel clear the air over bond deal

Germany halves ’12 deficit forecast

France taxes big biz, rich to even budget

ROME: Italian PM Mario Monti and German Chancellor Angela Merkel cleared the air on Wednesday, saying they would stick to a contested bond deal to help troubled euro economies like Italy and Spain. "We found a solution that satisfies everyone," Merkel said in reference to the agreement struck by eurozone leaders at a summit last week to allow the European Stability Mechanism to help member states more easily. "For me, the important thing was that the European Council took decisions based on the rules already in force," she said. The talks in Rome came amid criticism of Merkel in Germany for agreeing to the proposal pushed by Italy and Spain at the summit and doubts about Berlin's commitment to the deal had unnerved investors on the markets. The Italian prime minister also stressed that Italy would not be making use of the new mechanism because it could still borrow on the debt markets but wanted the it to be put in place to ease wider fears about the eurozone. BERLIN: Germany on Wednesday

PARIS: The new French Socialist government announced 13.3 billion euros in extra taxes on big business and the rich on Wednesday to meet deficit targets and balance its budget by 2017. The government said the economy was expected to rally with growth of 2 per cent per year from 2014 to 2017. The figures came in a revision of the 2012 budget a day after the government cut growth forecasts for this year and next and warned of the "crushing" burden of deficits and debt. It announced 13.3 billion euros ($16.7 billion) in tax increases this year and in 2013, a modest spending freeze and action to crimp a rise of public spending in coming years. The tax increases this year will fall about equally on businesses, notably big businesses, oil companies, banks, and also on private taxpayers. The taxes on households will fall mainly on high earners and the rich. The overall announcement was concentrated on tax rises. AFP

halved its forecast for its public deficit this year on the back of the resilience of Europe's top economy to the eurozone debt crisis so far. "Thanks to the favourable overall economic development, and the good situation on the labour market, the estimate for this year's deficit has improved from 1 per cent to a good .5 per cent" of GDP, the finance ministry said in a statement. "That means Germany will meet as early as this year its medium-term target of achieving a structural budget that is close to balance," it said. The public deficit comprises the budgets of the regional states, the municipal authorities and social welfare. Under EU rules, eurozone countries are not allowed to run up deficits in excess of 3 per cent of GDP but in practice this ceiling has been breached by most for much of the time. AFP

SPAT Airbus and US rival Boeing traded barbs Wednesday over government support for aircraft development, accusing each other of bending the rules. Airbus rejected claims by its arch-rival that it had caused job losses in the US, arguing that Boeing itself was responsible. "The WTO dismissed such claims and has specifically found that Boeing's own management decisions and its outsourcing/offshoring policy were exclusively responsible for American job losses," it said. Boeing charged Airbus with getting six times the government subsidies it had received. WTO findings "were crystal clear," it said. "$3 billion of subsidies not already corrected against Boeing versus $18 billion of subsidies against Airbus."

As militancy fades, girls return to school in J&K JAMMU: For the girls of Mahore in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district where militants used to have a free run, it is time to realise their dreams through education. Till a few years ago, they stayed at home on diktats by militants against girls going to school. "Now the girls are coming out unhesitatingly in large numbers, not only to attend school but also to take part in other activities," a state education department official, who did not want to be named, told IANS. There was a time in the 1990s when hardly any girls went to government schools, he said. Now with militancy fading from Mahore, the scenario is changing. "The attendance of girls is going up in schools in the area; in some

places, it is more than boys," the official said. "Girls are attending most of the programmes which the army is conducting under Operation Sadbhavna. These include employment camps, vocational training courses and lectures," said an army spokesman. He said the girls from areas around Mahore such as Arbais, Badder, Bagankote, Bagodass, Banna-A and Banna-B also participate in these programmes. The army recently held a series of lectures for girl students of Class 10, 11 and 12 on job opportunities, higher education, self-help schemes and health and hygiene. "I was not aware that women in India have made such progress in the last decade or so. Neither was I aware of the educational opportunities that I can venture into, after completing my class 12," Nafisa Akhtar, a Class 11 student from Mahore, said after attending the army programmes. She said she aimed to be a teacher. Fahmida Khan's father was killed by militants in 1998 in the village of Bagankote. She was four then, the youngest of five siblings. The family then moved to Mahore. "I have come to know through these camps that I too can join police or army. I have made up my mind to join either and fight social evils and militancy," the Class 10 student of a government school said. IANS

It is a matter of pride for us," chief manager SL Gupta said. The balance in the account, which includes interest, is `1,813, Gupta said. He said no one had claimed the money. The branch has also made public Rajendra Prasad's account number — 0380000100030687 — with his photograph. Normally, when a bank account holder dies, the money in there is passed on to the legal heirs on completion of certain formalities. Rajendra Prasad was born Dec 3, 1884 in Zeradei in Bihar's Siwan district and died Feb 28, 1963 in Patna. He was India's first president — from 1952 to 1962 (two terms). IANS

India‑View Lifer for Aus man who killed 3 Indians

MELBOURNE: An Australian man, who killed his Indian girlfriend and her two siblings, was today sentenced to life with a minimum 35 years of jail without parole, the longest sentence handed down in Queensland history. Supreme Court judge John Byrne today handed down the life sentence to Massimo ‘Max’ Sica, 42, for what he described as “brutal, horrific crimes in the worst category of murder”. Earlier on Tuesday, a jury found Sica guilty of killing his former 24-year-old girlfriend Neelma Singh, and her siblings — Kunal, 18 and Sidhi, 12, in 2003. The three were found dead in the spa of their parents’ home at Bridgeman Downs, on Brisbane’s northern fringe. Sica showed no emotion as the sentence was read out. Sica was sentenced to serve a life sentence for each victim, and Justice Byrne said he must not be released for 35 years unless under exceptional circumstances. Crown prosecutor Brendan Campbell had submitted that Sica should serve 45 years in prison and described it as “the horrendous nature of the killings”, including “the murder of an 18- and a 12-year-old in a callous, calculating way” to cover his tracks. He said Sica had showed an intent to kill, had operated normally the next day and had “an appalling criminal history”. PTI

Scientists at the CERN research centre confirmed existence of a new subatomic particle consistent with the Higgs boson, the basic building block of the universe. Here’s Higgs boson: what, why and how... WHAT IS IT? The Higgs boson is conceived as a sub-atomic particle that confers substance. It is conceived as existing in a treacly, invisible field that was created after the “Big Bang” and pervades the Universe. Higgs bosons “stick” to fundamental particles of matter, dragging on them, and then decay themselves into another form. Some of these particles interact more with the Higgs than others and thus have greater mass, according to the theory. But particles of light, also called photons, are impervious to it and have no mass.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? The origin of mass — meaning the resistance of an object to being moved — has been fiercely debated for decades. Finding the Higgs boson would vindicate the so-called Standard Model of physics, a theory that developed in the

early 1970s, which says the Universe is made from 12 particles which provide the building blocks for all matter. These fundamental particles are divided into a bestiary comprising six leptons and six quarks, which have exotic names such as “strange,” “up”, “tau” and “charm.”

WHY IS IT CALLED THE HIGGS BOSON? The name comes from a British physicist, Peter Higgs, today aged 83, who conceived of a field of mass-conferring particles in 1964 and became the first to publish his idea. Important theoretical work was also done separately by Belgian physicists Robert Brout, who died in 2011, and Francois Englert, 79. Bosons are non-matter particles which are force carriers, or messengers that act between matter particles. The interaction gives rise to three fundamental forces —

the strong force, the weak force and the electromagnatic force. There is a fourth force, gravity, which is suspected to be caused by a still-to-be found boson named the graviton.

HOW HAS THE HIGGS BEEN HUNTED? The quest for the Higgs has been carried out at colliders: giant machines that smash particles together and sift through the sub-atomic debris that tumbles out. The big daddy of these is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), operated by the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in a ring-shaped tunnel deep underground near Geneva. Smashups generated at the LHC briefly generate temperatures 100,000 times hotter than the Sun, replicating the conditions that occurred just after the Universe’s creation in the “Big Bang” nearly 14 billion years ago.

THE GODMEN

Peter Higgs

H

e is the man credited for putting the scientific world on the hunt for the most sought-after particle in modern physics. He is best known for his 1960s proposal of broken symmetry in electroweak theory, explaining the origin of mass of elementary particles in general and of the W and Z bosons in particular. This so-called Higgs mechanism predicts the existence of a new particle, the Higgs boson. The Higgs mechanism is generally accepted as an important part in the Standard Model of particle physics, without which particles would have no mass.

Satyendra Nath Bose

H

e is best known for his work on quantum mechanics in the early 1920s, providing the foundation for Bose– Einstein statistics and the theory of the Bose–Einstein condensate. The name bosons were given to the subatomic particles that adheres to the Bose–Einstein statistics. Although more than one Nobel Prize was awarded for research related to the concepts of the boson, the latest being the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics, which was given for advancing the theory of Bose–Einstein condensates—Bose himself was not awarded the Nobel Prize.

n

The LHC comprises four huge labs interspersed around a ringshaped tunnel near Geneva, 27 kilometres (16.9 miles) long and up to 175 metres (568 feet) below ground. Beams of hydrogen protons are accelerated in opposite directions to more than 99.9999 percent of the speed of light. Powerful superconducting magnets, chilled to a temperature colder than deep space, then “bend” the beams so that streams of particles collide within four large chambers. The smashups fleetingly generate temperatures 100,000 hotter than the Sun, replicating conditions that prevailed just after the “Big Bang” that created the Universe 13.7 billion years ago.

Cern’s Indian connection There are 10 Indian institutes involved with Cern: Aligarh Muslim University; University of Jammu; Institute of Physics in Bhubaneshwar; Punjab University; Universities of Guwahati, Rajasthan; and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata; Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre; Bose Institute; and IIT, Mumbai.

The criteria for a discovery Particle physics has an accepted definition for a discovery: a “fivesigma” (or five standard-deviation) level of certainty The number of sigmas measures how unlikely it is to get a certain experimental result as a matter of chance rather than due to a real effect. Similarly, tossing a coin and getting a number of heads in a row may just be chance, rather than a sign of a “loaded” coin. A “three-sigma” level represents about the same likelihood as tossing eight heads in a row. Five sigma, on the other hand, would correspond to tossing more than 20 in a row. Independent confirmation by other experiments turns fivesigma findings into accepted discoveries.

Mexico’s national election authority on Wednesday announced a recount of ballots cast at more than half of the polling stations in the country’s presidential election in which Enrique Pena Nieto claimed victory. Edmundo Jacobo, a top official with the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), made the announcement one day after leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who came in second in the vote, demanded a full vote recount, claiming “fraudulent” results. Jacobo also said they are expecting final official results for the presidential election completed as early as Thursday. Lopez Obrador, who heads a leftist coalition led by the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), accused Pena Nieto’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) of a massive fraud.

But... Seriously

T

he air is pierced by the whine of incoming artillery, followed every few seconds by explosions. Groggily, I think about getting up and taking cover, but then I realize I am no longer in Kabul, Afghanistan. What is going on outside my door is no Taliban attack, it is the joyous celebration of the United States’ birthday. The Fourth of July brings fireworks and cookouts, family gettogethers and heavy beach traffic. It also, typically, brings an outpouring of patriotism, as we all reflect a bit on what it means to be American in an increasingly scary world. This year the Yankee Doodle euphoria may be tinged with more than the usual dose of bile. It’s been a tough and ugly campaign year, with voters mulling their unpalatable choices amid a public debate that at times verges on hysteria. “Obamacare” is either the country’s salvation or the end of America as we know it. Even the Supreme Court, in its acrimonious dissent from the majority opinion in last Thursday’s ruling, suggested that the ruling on the Affordable Care Act had placed our “liberty in peril.” It’s tough talk on the eve of a national celebration of that liberty, and citizens may be excused for feeling uneasy. Mike, an electrician in Michigan, delivered a long litany of complaints to me one evening at a party. The liberals were eroding our liberty by introducing the government into all aspects of our life; the economic picture was bad and getting worse; education was in the toilet and Americans were more divided than ever. “But it still is the best place in the world,” he said, looking at me earnestly. “Don’t you think so?” Perhaps he’s right. As the US celebrates its 236th anniversary (237th if you happen to be from Massachusetts), it may be time to put the bitterness behind us, if only for one day. Perhaps our president is right: There is much that divides us, but even more that unites us. Happy Birthday, America. Global Post

There are 24 hours in a day. There are 24 time zones that divide up planet earth. That would make sense, because if there were 30 time zones and 22 hours in a day, every time someone asked you what time it was you would need to take out your calculator and conduct a series of calculations, which statistics have shown you will run out of battery power before you get your answer. The Greenwich Mean Time is not a type of sandwich but rather what is known as the Prime Meridian – basically the central point. Everything East is ahead of time ‘0’, everything West is behind time ‘0’. So if a man in Mumbai orders a dosa, that takes 4 minutes to get ready, at 3am, what time is it in Tokyo when his cousin decides to change his underwear? This, the amazing people of Hyderabad, is why time and time zones were created, so that one man does not eat dosa while another man is changing his dirty underwear. Being that we are such a global community, one of the issues that we often face but has never really been addressed is when do you wish someone if they are in a different time zone. Case and point, you live in California and your relative lives in Hyderabad (cause it’s such an amazing place to live). Their birthday is April 1st. Do you wish them on April 1st Hyderabad time, which means it is still March 31st in California? Or, do you wait until its April 1st in California, at which point it’s probably April 2nd in Hyderabad? Your instinct would be to say, “Obviously after I have performed the calculation using the advanced calculus, I have determined that it is best to always wear clean underwear.” Your second instinct would be to say, “Well, you wish them on the date of the location they are in.” So on March 31st you will wish them on April 1st in their location. While this is the considerate thing to do, is it necessarily the right thing to do? If you decide that you will wait until April 1 to wish them while it’s April 2 over there, do you now have to explain the time difference issue and that you only remembered because

you saw it on the calendar, do you wish them as though you are correct, or do you say wish them and add “belated” to the wishes which indicates that you were late in wishing them? You can take it one step further and opt to wish them not based on the current location of the individual but rather where the individual was born. So the person was born in Guam but currently is in New Zealand while you are in England. You choose to wish them on April 1t Guam time, which means that by the time you get around to wishing them it

will almost be April 3 in New Zealand (I’m thinking of the worst case scenario here). But wait, it gets more complicated. What if it is an anniversary and the husband and wife are in two different locations like Hawaii and Russia. Do you wish them at the same time? Do you wait until it’s their anniversary in their specific location? Do you wish them based on the location they got married? While most of you may think that the answer is rather straight forward, it’s actually not. I’m sure most of you have at least one relative or friend whose feelings are easily hurt and would get offended that you didn’t wish them according to their schedule. You can take the easy way out by wishing them using an electronic mean such as Facebook or email, which will have the message waiting there for the recipient at their convenience. Believe it or not I still manage to forget to wish people on time, if I manage to do it at all. Next time I promise to wish you while wearing clean underwear.

WE HAVE LESSONS TO LEARN FROM Fukushima disaster report

here are grave lessons to be learnt from the report submitted on the Fukushima nuclear disaster that found that the catastrophe could have been avoided. The Japanese parliamentary panel that looked into the whole affair describes the disaster in the report as profoundly manmade. It says the reactor could have been made fool-proof and if that were the case, this would not have happened. They have spotted instances of willful neglect and errors that made the plant unprepared for the earthquake and tsunami. India should take cue from the latest development. We have about 20 reactors across six states, but we do not have a long-term radioactive waste disposal policy. Also there is no proper demarcation between military and civilian nuclear affairs and lastly, everything pertaining to atomic energy comes under the prime minister and not Parliament — which means nuclear authorities are not answerable to the people. We hear about minor incidents at nuclear facilities in the country and pat comes the assurance that “there’s no need to panic”. That’s not enough. Everything concerned with atomic power must be transparent.

The flip side of anger It's good to see Charlie Sheen back on TV but Anger Management is no Two and a Half Men Padmini Copparapu padmini.c@postnoon.com

“Y

ou can’t fire me, I quit. You want to replace me with some other guy, go ahead! It won’t be the same! You think I’m losing! I’m not! I’m–anyway, you get the idea… ” As introductions go, Charlie Sheen's first lines since his return to TV, couldn't have been more pointed. He might have been thrown out of Two and a Half Men but he is back and declaring to the world that

he is far from over. In Anger Management, Sheen plays Charlie “Anger” Goodson, a former pro baseball player who in a fit of rage manages to sabotage his own career. Now he is a therapist, advocating peace and harmony, trying to prevent others from giving in to their internal monsters. The pilot episode opens to Charlie and his motley bunch of patients (or should we say stereotypes, including passiveaggressive, gay, lewd, grumpy, hot, nerdy) in a group therapy session at his house.

Calista Flockhart played Ally McBeal

A

lly is a Boston-based lawyer. She is shown as a woman who believes in love and is continually looking for her soul mate. She often hears songs in her head and experiences hallucinations, mostly due to her biological clock ticking and of sexual endeavours with various men. She was last seen in the TV series Brothers & Sisters and now she is touted to be on the new season for Dexter.

With a multi-camera format and choc-a-block one-liners, it’s the typical sitcom, playing off comic stereotypes. In fact, the laugh track is so predictable and tiresome, the effort seems to show on Sheen, who looks at least ten years older and more gaunt than we saw him last in primetime. But to his credit, Sheen is the catalyst that makes Anger Management change from intolerable to watchable with his sharp timing and delivery. If it’s the dialogue and the plot that lets down Sheen on the one hand, it is the lack of

supporting characters that nails the coffin. His friendwith-benefit and fellow shrink Kate (Selma Blair) in the first two episodes seems to have no raison d’etre except to steam the screen. Then of course, there’s the ex-wife Jennifer (Shawnee Smith) who you can’t tell much about except that she has terrible taste in men. Their teenage daughter, Sam (Daniela Bobadilla) is perfectly ordinary, except for a contrived and out of character OCD. Sheen, famously known

Ally McBeal is a single young lawyer looking for love and fulfillment in life. She works for a Boston Law firm with her ex-lover and his wife, a money loving boss and an annoying receptionist. With all that is going on she must contend with her feelings and her over active imagination

for his contempt of Two and a Half Men, spoke of Anger Management in a recent interview with New York Times, said that this might be the curtain call for him. “At some point you just get tired of wearing somebody else’s clothes, saying somebody else’s words and working in somebody else’s space. ...and when this ends, I’m done. This is my swan song.” Unless, the show goes through a radical makeover, it’s a crying shame, Sheen chose to go with this for his retirement.

lly McBeal and Billy Thomas were going steady throughout their childhood. Ally even followed Billy to Harvard law school despite having no interest in law. But when Billy chose to pursue a career in law away from Ally, their relationship came to an end. Gil will now be seen in House at the End of the Street in September.

Exercise for a happy period

Dr Divya T Sudarshan

Helping them speak out Many of us cannot imagine life without the ability to speak. Speech therapy in many cases helps people suffering from these disorders overcome the problem Anishaa Kumar anishaa.k@postnoon.com

S

peech plays a very important role in our lives. Many of us take it for granted, but there are millions of people who suffer from a variety of speech and language disorders.

Causes According to statistics from the National Institute on deafness and other communication disorders (USA), the prevalence of speech disorders in children is around 8 to 9 per cent. G Srinivas, chief SLP and audiologist, Apollo Hospital explains, “There can be many causes of communication disorders such as lack of exposure, faulty learning, genetic reasons and in some cases associated problems such as hearing loss. There are of four main categories namely voice, language, fluency, articulation.”

Voice Voice disorders refer to a condition in which the quality of

the voice is affected. There are various kinds of voice disorders. “Hoarse voice, male speaking in female voice and vice versa, problem of two pitches are some of the voice disorders,” says Srinivas.

Language According to Sanjay Kumar, Bangalore-based SLP (speech language pathologist) and audiologist, “The most common type is delayed speech and language. Usually by the time the child reaches two years of age they manage to speak a few sentences. “If they are unable to do so than parents bring their children to speech therapists. Tests are conducted to find out how much of delay there is.” Talking about language disorders Srinivas says, “There are two kinds of language disorders. The first kind is aphasia and the second is neuron motor. Aphasia is of two kinds. The first is fluent aphasia in which the child is speaks but has a problem in understanding and the second is non-fluent when the child can understand but has a problem speaking. Motor neuron problems occur due to the involve-

ment of nerves.”

Fluency According to Srinivas, “Fluency disorders involve conditions in which a persons fluency is reduced or there is a condition of over-fluency.” Stammering or stuttering are the most common type. In stammering a person’s speech is disturbed or interrupted. According to Sanjay, “stammering occurs due to lack of coordination between different muscles such as the diaphragm, larynx and articulatory muscles.” In stammering, Srinivas mentions, the flow is effected. There is a slow rate of speech. The primary behaviour includes repetition, prolongedness and blocks. When it comes to secondary behaviour, the child may close his/her eyes or tap their legs as they feel it helps them overcome the problem. On the other hand another condition prevails in which the person tends to speak fast with an overlapping of words. They tend to repeat words.

Articulation Sanjay explains that articula-

tion disorders refer to problems of misarticulation, the patient is unable to pronounce correctly. A problem of place and manner exists. Therapy for misarticulation include training the person about place and manner. Srinivas says, “In articulation there are four problems refereed to as SODA — substitution, ommission, distortion and addition.”

Speech therapy Speech therapy helps people with various communication disorders overcome their problems. Srinivas explains that speech therapy is a scientific method of teaching. Speech and voice therapies are not life-long. Most of the problems can be cured within 5-6 months. Voice disorders take as less as 5-6 days, while neurological problems may take a longer time. Depending on the problem and severity, treatment is provided. Sanjay explains, “In case of stammering exercises are taught to help maintain coordination between muscles. In case of language delay, they are taught about sentences and vocabulary.”

Is it alright to exercise during my periods? Also I have a horrible bloated feeling during my cycle. Any foods that I should avoid? It has always been a point of controversy, whether to exercise or not. Because we come from a country where it was customary to keep women incarcerated in the house for three days during their periods, as a means of giving them rest, it was said! It made sense then, when you see that 80 per cent of Indian women were anaemic, had multiple pregnancies and there were no medications. Thus restricting activity was a means of reducing embarassing situations. But times have changed. Studies have shown increase in exercise around your period, will improve oxygen circulation throughout the body. It helps decrease the cramps by releasing endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers), increasing blood flow, and by loosening muscles in the lower abdomen, back, and thighs (for those with a heavy flow, exercise is not a solution alone, you may need medication too!). Exercise also rids your body of excess water so you aren’t bloated. The decision of how much exercise to do, is always personal. Running may be a bit difficult, and avoid abdominal crunches for that period. Stretching, aerobics, yoga, and weight training work wonders as also swimming. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Avoid lots of salt (but use spices liberally). Avoid refined sugars and fried foods (though I am sure that is exactly what you are craving for). Avoid caffeine — it can make cramps worse. Get plenty of sleep. Use hot water bottles to relieve cramps so you can get to the gym. The change has to start with us! Only if we understand and appreciate the normality of a period will our daughters too! Children exposed to violence suffer health problems: Study

Women cat-lovers may end up killing self

WASHINGTON: Children exposed to community violence may be traumatised up to a year after the event, which may carry long-term negative consequences for health, says a study. “We know that exposure to violence is linked with aggression, depression, post-traumatic stress symptoms and academic and cognitive difficulties in the short term, but little is known about the long-term effects of such exposure,” said Elizabeth Susman, professor biobehavioural health, Penn State University, US. The scientists from the Penn State and University College London, chose 124 children, aged between eight and 13 years and living in small city and rural communities, to participate in the study, the Journal of Adolescent Health reports. “We focused on children who live in small towns, so you would normally not expect them to be exposed to a lot of violence. Also, these were healthy children without a history of reported maltreatment,” said Melissa Peckins, biobehavioural health graduate student from Penn State. The researchers gave each of the adolescents a questionnaire, which identified their exposure to violence during lifetime and within the past 12 months. The adolescents were then given the beginning of a story and asked to complete it in front of two mock judges, whom they were told were evaluating their responses and performances for later comparison to those of other children the same age. Following the story-completion task, adolescents were also given a serial subtraction task. The team measured the children’s stress responses by comparing the cortisol levels present in samples of their saliva collected before and after the stress test was administered. Cortisol is a steroid hormone, produced by adrenal gland and is released in response to stress. “In males, we found that as exposure to violence increased,

LONDON: Women cat owners are likely to develop mental health problems and commit suicide since they could be infected with a common parasite which can be caught from cat litter, a study has suggested. Women infected with the Toxoplasma gondii, or T gondii parasite, which spreads through contact with cat faeces or eating undercooked meat or unwashed vegetables, are at increased risk of suicidal thoughts, Daily Mail reported. About a third of the world’s population is infected with the parasite, which hides in cells in the brain and muscles, often without producing symptoms, the report added. The infection — called toxoplasmosis — has been linked to mental illness, such as schizophrenia, and changes in behaviour. Scientists from the US, Denmark, Germany and Sweden looked at over 45,000 Danish women who gave birth between 1992 and 1995. The kittens don’t produce antibodies to T gondii parasite until three months after they are born, so the antibodies present in their blood represented infection in the mothers. The scientists researching if any of women diagnosed as infected later attempted suicide, found that women infected with T gondii were one-and-a-half times more likely to attempt suicide than those who were not. Teodor Postolache, from the University of Maryland, said: “We can’t say with certainty that T gondii caused the problem But we did find a predictive association between the infection and suicide attempts later in life that warrants additional studies.” IANS cortisol reactivity decreased, so cortisol reactivity was attenuated; it was a habituation effect,” Peckins said. The finding was not present in females. “In enduring stressful conditions, we may have adapted evolutionarily to suppress our cortisol levels because higher and

more prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream can lead to negative health consequences, such as autoimmune disorders, lowered immunity, arthritis and atypical depression,” Susman said. This may explain why cortisol reactivity was lower for

males,” Susman added. “However, there is a theory that females may react to stressful situations by talking about it, which may be their way of reducing the negative effects of cortisol in the bloodstream,” Susman said. IANS

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play Kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Recognised as one of the world’s oldest sports, Wrestling was first held at the ancient Olympics in 708 BC, and the Greco-Roman Wrestling was included at the Athens 1896 Olympic Games which happened to be the first of the modern era. Played out on a circular mat, the sport is a battle of nerves, strength and skill, and should provide plenty of drama at ExCeL during London Olympic Games this year.

Aleksandr Karelin (born September 19, 1967) is one of only four male wrestlers to have won three Olympic golds. He competed in his first Olympics at Seoul 1988, where he beat Rangel Gerovski in the Greco-Roman discipline with his trademark reverse body lift slam in the dying seconds of the bout. In 1990 he commenced a 10-year run during which he won every match he entered.

Irini Merleni (born February 8, 1982) became the first women’s Wrestling gold medal winner when the sport debuted on the Olympic programme at Athens 2004. Only 1.50 metres tall, she entered the Games as a three-time world champion in the lightest weight division. After a tight contest she defeated Japan’s Chiharu Icho in the final, awarded the victory by a judges’ decision.

W

restling is one of the oldest forms of combat with references to it as early as the Iliad, in which Homer recounts the Trojan War in the 13th or 12th century BC. The origins of wrestling can be traced back 15,000 years through

cave drawings in France. Babylonian and Egyptian relief’s show wrestlers using most of the holds known to the present-day sport. In ancient Greece, wrestling occupied a prominent place in legend and literature; wrestling competition, brutal in many

aspects, was the number one sport of the Olympic Games. The ancient Romans borrowed heavily from Greek wrestling, but eliminated much of its brutality. During the Middle Ages (fifth century to fifteenth century) wrestling remained popular and enjoyed

the patronage of many royal families, including France, Japan and England. Early Americans brought a strong wrestling tradition with them when they came from England. The settlers also found wrestling to be popular among Native Americans.

DAYS TO GO

GEMILI ALL SET FOR GAMES LONDON: British teenage sprinter Adam Gemili has sought to allay fears he was unprepared for the Olympic Games by insisting he was looking forward to running against the likes of Usain Bolt in London. The 18-year-old, a former footballer who had spells with several clubs including European champions Chelsea, Gemili only turned to athletics full-time in January. But he is now Britain’s top-ranked 100 metre runner this year after posting a time of 10.08 seconds in Regensburg, Germany on June 2. That catapulted Gemili to the top of the national rankings with an Olympic ‘A’ standard qualifying time. He then had to finish first or second in the national trials to secure his Games place, something he did when finishing runner-up to the vastly more experienced Dwain Chambers. His coach, Michael Afilaka insisted running in London was still not guaranteed, saying he was concerned Gemili might be burnt out in the “cauldron” of a home Olympics. However, Gemili said Wednesday: “I think it got misconstrued.” “I was physically exhausted but I was happy, I was over the moon. That night I didn’t get to bed until about 4am because I was so

happy. I was emotional because I couldn’t believe I had finished in the top two and had got automatic selection.” “The Olympics only came on my radar about a month ago when it became a possibility that I could go to the Games as part of the relay or anything like that,” Gemili added. “My family had applied for tickets, thinking we could go and watch some of the athletics or other events, but we didn’t get any. “The last month or so has been really hectic and manic but I’ve enjoyed every moment of it and enjoyed showing people what I can do and how I can run.” Gemili confessed he was not exactly a life-long fan of

The Olympics only came on my radar about a month ago when it became a possibility that I could go to the Games as part of the relay. Adam Gemili, British sprinter athletics, having only taken a passing interest in the 2008 Games in Beijing. “My first Olympic memory was Beijing if I’m honest,” Gemili said. “I remember the 100m but I wasn’t too

much into athletics. I’ve seen it since on Youtube and I’ve been doing my research. “I feel privileged that I’ve earned a place and I will be lining up against the likes of Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, potentially anything can happen in that race and it feels really good. “I will be running against the best guys in the world and hopefully I’ll run the times they run and maybe even better it. Just to be there on the day will be amazing. “I’m improving a lot and that 10.08 was quite scrappy, it wasn’t my best race. I’ve made a lot of improvements and changes and if I keep improving then we can hopefully see some quicker times.” AFP

Paula confident despite foot injury LONDON: Britain’s Paula Radcliffe is confident she will be able to run the marathon at the Olympics next month despite the recurrence of a foot injury. London promises to be the 38-year-old world record holder and former world champion’s last shot at Olympic marathon glory after she failed to finish when favourite in 2004 due to illness and injury, with injuries hampering her build-up in Beijing in 2008 where she finished down the field in a lowly 23rd place.

Since 2006, Radcliffe’s career has been blighted by a variety of injuries, including back, hip, toe and bunion problems. But speaking at the launch of Nike and O2’s new app, Priority Sports, Radcliffe insisted she expected to run in the Olympic marathon. “Preparations for the Games have gone really well and I was really pleased until the last 10 days or so,” Radcliffe said. “The joint in my foot that can give me trouble has been giving me a bit of a problem.” AFP

Gay, Gatlin to test Paris waters ahead of Olympics

PARIS: US sprint heavyweights Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin will go head-to-head in the Diamond League meeting here on Friday, with home hope Christophe Lemaitre also hoping to show his form ahead of the fastapproaching London Olympics. Gay and Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion coming back from a doping ban, have both qualified for the US team for the July 27-August 12 Games, coming through unscathed from their notoriously tough national trials in Eugene last week. And Lemaitre, 22, arrives on the back of having sealed his second European 100m title. But Gay, the US national record holder and second fastest man of alltime at 9.68sec, said he was confident heading towards the London Games after a slow return from a hip injury that required surgery. “I feel pretty good, considering I came back and made the team. I was under a lot of stress, mentally and physically, early in the season, but I feel a lot better now,” said the double sprint champion from the 2007 Osaka worlds. AFP

Phelps hopes to cement legacy in London LONDON: Michael Phelps will cement his Olympic legacy in London, leading a US team that expects to dominate the pool ahead of rivals Australia and rising powers such as China. Phelps’s unprecedented eight gold medals at the 2008 Games led the US to a 31-medal haul. Phelps, who owns 14 Olympic gold medals, won’t try to match that feat, but his seven-event programme gives him plenty of room to make more Games history.

Murray looks to LeBron to inspire him in his dream Dave James

LONDON: Andy Murray will focus firmly on Wimbledon semifinal rival Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday, having cast a longing gaze across the Atlantic for title-winning inspiration from NBA basketball hero LeBron James. Murray, looking to become the first British man to reach the Wimbledon final since Bunny Austin in 1938, is an avid follower of basketball and believes he can learn from James’ recent breakthrough NBA triumph with the Miami Heat. Like Murray, James also spent years battling the critics who doubted his winning mentality. “He came very close to winning quite a lot of times and winning this year for him was massive,” said Murray, who has now reached four successive Wimbledon semi-finals without being able to push on. “I would say for me it’s a similar situation. I’ve been close a lot of times and not quite made it. “There’s a lot of people out there that didn’t want him to win. There’s a lot of people that said he would never win. There’s a lot of

LONDON: Roger Federer said Wednesday that seeing Prince William and wife Catherine in the Royal Box on Wimbledon Centre Court helped inspire him to a record 32nd Grand Slam semifinal appearance. Federer, the six-time champi-

on at the All England Club, comfortably defeated Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to set-up a semi-final clash with world number one Novak Djokovic. Also in the Royal Box were Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, 50 years after he completed the Grand Slam, as well as golden couple Andre Agassi and

wife Steffi Graf, both former Wimbledon champions. “I really actually do enjoy seeing legends coming out, following today’s tennis. Royals coming out, it’s inspiring, too, in some ways, believe it or not,” Federer explained. “It’s great for Wimbledon. It’s great for the players. It’s just nice to see that the Royal Box is always full. It’s never empty for us. And if it is, you know they’re going to come back, they’re not here just to drink champagne and tea in the back. “They really do come for the tennis. We feel that on Centre Court, and I do feel that. That’s probably one of the reasons why I play well on Centre Court,” he added.

I’ve buried hatchet with Djokovic, says Federer

R

oger Federer insisted on Wednesday that he has buried the hatchet with fellow superstar Novak Djokovic despite the two having been involved in a number of disputes. Federer and Djokovic will meet for the 27th time in the Wimbledon semifinals on Friday, the latest chapter in a sometimes stormy, often thrilling sixyear rivalry. The Swiss star will face the defending champion for the first time on grass, but it’s their earlier history which has often added spice to their duels. Federer admitted Wednesday that his opinion of Djokovic hit a new low in 2006 when Switzerland and Serbia met in the Davis Cup.

S

Ilverstone, United Kingdom: Fresh from climbing to the top of the drivers’ standings on his home soil two weeks ago, Fernando Alonso will seek to establish himself as a clear leader by repeating his 2011 victory in Sunday’s British Grand Prix. The 30-year-old Spaniard, who is bidding to become the youngest triple champion in F1 history, took advantage of others’ failings in the European Grand Prix at Valencia, but this time hopes he can steer his Ferrari to a decisive victory. If he does win, he will be the first man this year to win three races, leaving six others stuck on one win each as the closest opening period of any F1 season conjures up more unexpected and unpredictable racing.

ENGLAND:

England’s hopes of becoming the world’s number top-ranked one-day international side (ODI) during their series against Australia were ended after rain washed out the third ODI here Wednesday. The match at Edgbaston was abandoned without a ball being bowled, with England 2-0 up in the five-match series. However, England had to sweep this contest 5-0 to replace current table-toppers Australia at the head of the 50-over standings and so become the first team to be number one in all three formats, with the side already at the summit of the Test and Twenty20 rankings. The umpires had hoped to get a reduced 28 overs per side match underway at 6pm local time (1700GMT) but fresh rain saw them decide that the minimum 20 overs pers side needed to constitute a match would not be possible and the fixture was abandoned at 6.11pm (1711GMT).
