n another demonstration of how there are a million ways to circumvent a situation, City police attempted to protect one of their own when a case of atrocity against SC/ST was slapped against him. The incident occurred when head constable, C Ramakrishna, attached to the Chilkalguda police station, lodged a complaint against the Chilkalguda inspector B Anjaiah, alleging that he had insulted him for being an SC/ST. However, he escaped by going on a long leave before action could be initiated. According to the police,
Anjaiah had been attached to the Chilkalguda police station for the last 18 months. On July 28, he verbally abused Ramakrishna using vulgar language and criticised him based on his caste.
Ramakrishna felt hurt and humiliated. Following this, he complained to ACP PV Murlidhar as well as DCP, North Zone, Ch Srikanth. But the officials did not take any action

he HMDA’s master plan 2031 has come under fire by various civic bodies and representatives from all parties. At a press conference that was held on Tuesday at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram, the Chetana Society and Basthi Vikas Manch denounced the many alleged irregularities in the urban municipal governing body’s master plan. Many ambitious projects of the HMDA like the unfinished ORR and the many financial and infrastructure irregularities were discussed at the conference. The ORR’s vehicular traffic growth in the ORRGC was estimated at 6 lakh in 2031. Which means that the utility value of the current functional ring road will have very little value and the fact that the plans for the ORR have been under constant change has affected a lot of families living around the project adversely. Furthermore, the issue of solid waste management came under severe criticism as the governing bodies failed to

The vital urban planning principles are missing in the plan. address the many issues of being allocated only one landfill in Malkapur which will inadvertently affect the transportation costs. Sustainability and reduced environmental costs could be achieved if multiple spots were identified in all directions, they said. The inclusion of many villages like Pochampally into the City’s urban limits in the future will mean that the local weaver folk and farmers who form the backbone of the villages’s economy will come under severe increased costs of urban living. The local handloom livelihood is likely to get affected because of the City’s socialscapes. The press conference was attended by a strong audience who approved of the criticism directed at the HMDA.
against the inspector. Disappointed, Ramakrishna approached the Secunderabad court, which directed the Gopalpuram police to book a case against the said inspector under the SC/ST atrocities Act. Following the magistrate’s directive, Gopalpuram inspector P Shivabhaskar booked a case against Anjaiah and referred the case to ACP Murlidhar for further action. However, so far no action has been taken. Ramakrishna said, “I don’t want to force him, because the matter lies with the court. The court has issued orders to register a case against the inspector and has also directed that a report be
admitted in this case.” According to sources, when the head constable filed a complaint, Anjaiah immediately had him transferred and went on earned leave from August 23. He has reportedly gone to his native town of Kodad in Nalgonda. When contacted, ACP Murlidhar said, “We can’t take any action without conducting a proper investigation.” “The inspector should be suspended within 48 hours if a criminal case was booked,” said Ramakrishna. According to Ramakrishna, there has been a case registered against Anjaiah in this regard when he was with the OU police station.

ith the Met department declaring the possibility of heavy rains for the next 24 hours, authorities have taken precautionary measures. Low lying areas in and around the Hussain Sagar lake have been put on alert. The GHMC, CPDCL and other departments have been put on alert following the Met department’s forecasts for the next three to five days. Areas centred around storm water drains and nallahs have been affected in the past during these situations, especially in August 2000 when the City’s functioning was disrupted due to a flood-like situation. In order to avoid such a situation, the GHMC has issued warnings to the residents of low lying areas around the Hussain Sagar, especially Himayath Nagar, Chikkadpally, Barkhatpura, Narayanguda and Kawadiguda areas. Repair works on many blocked drains were being undertaken in the night so as to not disrupt the traffic flow. The Hussain Sagar recorded more than full-tank level capacity of 513.9 feet on Monday. Following this, mayor Majid Hussain instructed zonal and deputy municipal commissioners to be on alert and prepare the residents for any eventuality. He advised the people living in the areas abutting the lake’s nallah to be vigilant and alert and seek any help from the department or their corporators. R Dhan Singh, chief engi-

after July, we have prepared and cautioned authorities to vacate the people of the four areas adjacent to the lake’s surplus nallah.” Clogged drains and manholes were being cleared to allow the free exit of the water. Elsewhere, the CPDCL was taking full precautionary measures by carrying out maintenance and repair works in many areas. Musheerabad, Gandhinagar, Ramnagar and VST areas have in the past faced many problems because of electric short circuits and overhead cables. Tree pruning and cable repair works were being taken up in full swing. The Central zone of the City’s power grid has been facing constant breakdowns due to many feeder problems.
Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Somajiguda areas have witnessed four hour blackouts because of main line power cables failing in the rains. Vehicular movement was also affected at Nagarjuna Circle and Panjagutta crossroads because of the failure of streetlighting and the pitiable condition of the roads. The rains also managed to dampen the vehicular movement in many areas during the evening. Punjagutta, Somajiguda, Khairatabad, Ameerpet, Kukatpally and Begumpet were clogged because of the constant drizzle. The rains managed to halt the progress of many road works and metro rail works in various parts of the City.

CM now woos minorities CM Kiran Kumar Reddy has now turned his attention towards the minorities in Andhra Pradesh, especially the Muslim community. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com
The CM’s announcement assumes importance in the wake of TDP’s pitch to attract the BC community .
A
fter promising legislation to the SC and ST community for proper implementation of their funds under a specified sub-plan, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has turned his attention to woo the minorities — especially Muslims. The CM, who is on a three-day tour of Kurnool district as part of his Indiramma Baata, announced that the government would set up regional study centres exclusively for students from the minority communities. He also said that jobs would be provided under the Rajiv Yuvakiranalu in all the three regions of the State and would also enhance the salaries of Imams (prayer leader) and Muazzins (caretaker) working in various mosques across the
State. This announcement by the CM has been welcomed by the Muslim leaders and elders of the community. The CM’s announcement assumes importance in the wake of main opposition Telugu Desam Party’s aggressive pitch-
ing to attract the BC community with a lot of promises. While hailing the announcement by the chief minister, Andhra Pradesh Congress committee general secretary Abid Rasool Khan noted that as per the existing system the Imams and Muazzins are being paid a paltry amount of `200 every month. He requested the State government to enhance the salary to `5,000 for Imams and that of Muazzins to `3,000 per month. He opined that this would help these religious lead-
ers to avoid depending on local politicians and residents for their livelihood. “The lack of support from the government has forced many of these Imams and muazzins to look for alternatives to earn a livelihood. In the process, they are succumbing to political pressure and acting in a biased manner on many crucial issues. The CM’s promise will help them get rid of this,” Khan said. He also requested the State to provide liberal financial support to mosques which does not have any financial source to run it. Party MLC Farooq Hussain also welcomed the move and hoped that the State government’s move would help the minorities to empowering themselves. He called upon the student community to utilise the opportunity completely and grow in their careers.

Govt trying to prune BC quota: TDP

DP politburo members Y a n a m a l a Ramakrishnudu and Dadi Veerabhadra Rao have alleged that the State government was trying to decrease reservations in the local bodies for Backward Classes people in the State. They demanded that the State government continue reservations to SCs and STs according to their population. In a press release on Tuesday, the TDP leaders alleged that the Kiran government was trying to prune reservations to BC communities instead of increasing them. They also alleged that the government was trying to prune BC quota to ensure that reservations did not cross 50 per cent. They also alleged that the State government has failed to increase reservations from 50 to 69 per cent like in Tamil Nadu. They also strongly opposed the State government’sattempt to prune BC quota. ly admit they don’t feel the need to buy a ticket as there’s no system of checks in place. But it seems that even if every passenger dutifully purchases a ticket, the service would still not break even. The first phase which cost the State government and Indian Railways `178 crore has never made a profit since its inception in 2003. Railway authorities are almost resigned to this. “This is the cheapest mode of transport you will see in the country. You can travel 30 kilometers for `3. Subsidised is not even the word. The project is almost a social service obligation. The revenue we rake in does not even meet our expenditure. In fact, at any point it stands at 70 per cent. That is, if we have spent `100, we recover only `30. That’s the way it is,” rues K Sambasiva Rao, CPRO, South Central Railway.
W
ith the state of traffic congestion in the City, it’s apparent that the MultiModal Transport System (MMTS), is going to become increasingly important for public transport in the City. But already the MMTS is plagued by some key issues passengers can’t ignore anymore and the Railways, despite their best efforts, can’t seem to do anything about.
FREQUENCY
Despite having a chock-a-block schedule on paper with an MMTS train available at an average of every 15 minutes, in reality, it’s quite a different story. At any point in time, passengers are

kept waiting at least half-anhour to 45 minutes for their ride. Passengers say this is worse during lean periods, especially on Sunday afternoons when there is usually no service. Railway officials, however, say they have their own compulsions. Primary among which is that unlike metro services, the MMTS here has no exclusive corridor of its own. “This means that MMTS trains have to share the track with general trains, local trains and good trains, leaving little time for maintenance. Therefore, we have had to cancel some services on the weekends for the upkeep of tracks. This might hamper the frequency but we have no choice,” they say.
the number of passengers availing MMTS services. Today, the 121 services cater to over 1.6 lakh people in the twin cities. This is an extremely small percentage of the total number of people who use public transport in the City. But the railway department is not too worried. In fact, they say it’s ideal, given their constraints. Shakeel Ahmed, PRO of South Central Railways, explains, “Over the years, we have added additional coaches to existing trains; added a women’s special and upgraded facilities. But if it increases beyond this, we might reach capacity saturation. We can address these issues with Phase II, which will begin soon.”

travelling by MMTS. Thankfully, that was when they started the ATV machines. Now it’s a little more manageable,” quips Sahitya Reddy, an IT employee. Indeed, for the tech savvy, the railway department implemented a Smart Card system that can be used at the Automatic Vending Machines at every station, to beat the queue. They say that it has been quite a success, with 60 new smart cards being sold and about 500 recharged on a daily basis. It is estimated that at present approximately 10,700 passengers are using 67 ATVMs at 16 MMTS stations every day.

Ironically, even as the patronage of the MMTS seems to be catching on, its coffers seem to be running on empty. Except for a conscientious few, many unabashed-

While MMTS enables one to go from one end of the City to the other quite economically and quickly, it still doesn’t eliminate traffic woes for commuters. The main problem for passengers has become commuting from the station to their respective destinations. “People who have their own vehicles at the stations are still okay. But for the rest of us, we still have to rely on autos or walk to a bus stop in the vicinity to get to our destination. All the time and money we save by train, we have to spend here. So the purpose is defeated,” says Siddharthan, a self-employed professional. For their part, railway officials say they would welcome government initiatives to have support services. “We can’t supervise anything outside of the station, but we would gladly welcome it if APSTRC provided buses outside MMTS stations or other initiatives that could help commuters,” adds Rao. So until Phase II is rolled out, which aims to integrate the upcoming Metro with new and old rail services, it seems that the MMTS conundrum will remain at a helpless impasse.

TEACHERS’ DAY
It’s a process of evolution VOICES
Teaching is an evolving process. Today blackboards have been replaced with computers and internet. I have been teaching for the last two decades, and yes, today classroom ethics have changed. It’s not just confided to text books, today we teach children how to deal with real life problems. We expose them to the world.
— Padmaja W, Centenary Baptist School.
Dance is the best way to transform life and it is a blessing to see so many lives transform through me. When one learns dance there is complete mindbody coordination. This makes them more alert and the effect of this show in their other activities too. This is indeed gratifying. Yes, teaching dance may not bring monetary benefits but it is mentally satisfying.
— Sagar M, Dance teacher.
Teaching is the most tiring job because we have to repeat the same information again and again, but yet a very powerful profession. In my profession there is both love and respect. A student and teacher bond is very powerful and it works both ways. Our relation is not time bound, learning is continuous process.
I take pride in calling myself a drawing teacher. I don’t just teach them how to draw but it’s more about bringing out a child’s talent and passion. As a teacher I have to nurture their emotions and thought processes. Now or 10 years later this will never change.
— Priyamani, yoga and meditation instructor.
— Krishnaveni Devi, Secunderabad Public School.
As a child, most of us wanted to become teachers but very few actually go on to choose teaching as a profession. But for those who do take it up, it’s either the passion for the profession or an instrument to bring about a change. On Teachers’ Day, we speak to a few teachers on what the profession means to them.
VOICES I always wanted to do something for the society hence I chose teaching. At this transit home we teach children every thing from scratch. They don’t even know what education is when they first come here. It’s very challenging but the end result is rewarding.
Though I am a teacher I am still learning a lot myself. A teacherstudent relation is a give and take one. To be a teacher one needs to be committed and should be open to learning new methods of teaching. Today it’s all about the internet and computers. I feel this creates major communication gap. The emotional connect between students and teachers is reducing day by day and we need to work towards bridging this gap.
— M Raju, teacher, Divya Disha.
— Gauri N, Centenary Baptist School.
I was brought up in an ashram so I know the importance of a teacher and a mentor. I was teaching in my village, but then I came to the City. Here we all live as one family. It’s gratifying to see how the orphan children transform and how they understand the importance of education.
I always wanted to be a teacher and for the last 30 years I have been living my dream of teaching students. This is indeed a very noble profession and it is a privilege to meet and interact with so many young minds. We mould a student’s life and this indeed makes them a good citizen in the future. For the last 30 years the syllabus has not changed much and this needs to change. We need to introduce a more practical syllabus to make both teaching and learning a fun experience.

125 hoardings under use for COP-11 With the much touted Conference on Biodiversity just around the corner, the GHMC is on a publicity blitz with several billboards and hoardings promoting it across the City. Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com
C
urious onlookers are now fascinated by the unique hoardings that have popped up along several stretches in the City of late. The themes featuring a tiger, an insect, a sparrow, a rooster, planet with plants and the world map dotted in green are now up for display for the public. Denizens can now assume that authorities have hit the top gear, for the much awaited International Conference on Biodiversity. With the impending COP-11, known to the general public as the ‘Biodiversity Conference’ the GHMC put up hoardings in 24 stretches across the City. Nearly 125 boards have already been put up. Mostly on the stretches
between Koti to LB Nagar, Khairatabad to Erragadda; between Telugutalli Flyover to Khairatabad Junction and on the Begumpet stretch these billboards are considered to be the initial part of the public relations blitz for the government. The
stretch between KBR Park to Kothaguda Junction alone boasts of nearly 18 hoardings for the COP-11. According to the officials, the hoardings will be used for these two months, until the completion of the Conference. These 125
boards include direction boards and arches specially made visible for the commuters and general public. As GHMC is responsible for hoardings in the City, as part of the contract with the agencies it has decided to focus on the COP-11.
“We shall be coming up with different themes in two phases for the conference. After completion of the first phase, the GHMC will change the theme accordingly,” said D Jayaraj Kennedy, additional commissioner (Electricity and Advertisement). The 20-day conference is considered to be one of the biggest events to be held in the City after the Afro-Asian Games in 2003. Apart from other means of publicity, the use of hoardings at a greater level is augmenting the promotional campaign for this event. According to the officials, it is but obligatory on the part of the agencies to provide space for social causes. The GHMC will be coming up with more hoardings as the date for the event closes in.

LOVE IN THE TIME OF WAR
In the heart of Aleppo, besieged by Syrian troops for more than five weeks, a young couple who found love in a time of war exchanged vows. The marriage was between rebel sniper Abu Khaled and Hanan, the nurse who treated his leg wound. The 20-year-old remembers falling in love with Hanan “at first sight.”
WAR SONG OF SYRIA

It’s as ubiquitous as the gunfire that rings through Syria
Can you hear it, Basher? Yalla erhal ya Bashar: The words are spray-painted on walls, blared on minibus radios and exchanged as mobile phone ringtones which means “It’s time to leave, Bashar”.
I
n Syria’s rebel-held areas, the words are spray-painted on walls, blared on minibus radios and exchanged as mobile phone ringtones: Yalla erhal, ya Bashar (It’s time to leave, Bashar). Huddled fighters intone the song-cum-slogan before launching operations against Syrian army forces. In Syria’s streets, demonstrators chant it to open and close marches against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. “Get out Bashar!”, demands the song, a rageful drumroll of attacks calling the Syrian president a “liar” and an “ass” and his brother Maher a “coward”. Its creator paid dearly, however. Ibrahim Qashush, a singer from the central city of Hama, was little-known before the Arab Spring reached Syria in March 2011. A few months later, a shaky recording of the nagging mantra performed by Qashush along with a chorus of demonstrators at a night protest in Hama went viral on the Internet. “You have lost your legitimacy... Freedom is within reach... The martyrs’ blood doesn’t come cheap,” says the song, whose unlikely rhymes never fail to trigger laughter. It even pokes fun at Assad’s slight lisp. Qashush was soon arrested; his body was found in a river in July last year. The man nicknamed “the mocking bird of the revolution” had had his throat slit and vocal chords ripped out. In many Syrian towns where anti-regime protests carry on, organisers call themselves Qashush in respect. “His song gives us courage... Ibrahim Qashush holds a special place in people’s hearts, I think,” said one of the organisers of a recent rally in the town of Marea, north of Aleppo in northwestern Syria. “The Free Syrian Army is made up of normal people like me, who have families and jobs. There are not many heroes but we have our guardian angel:
Ibrahim Qashush,” said the young man, who gave his name as Mohamed Qashush. In the disputed Aleppo neighbourhood of Jdeideh, Abu Mohammed, a veteran commander who defected from the army three years ago and returned from exile to join the rebellion last year, likes to tease regime soldiers with the song.
‘HIS SONG GIVES US COURAGE’ After checking the soldiers’ position by using a small mirror to peek around the street corner, Abu Mohamed wheeled out a speaker, stuck his mobile against the microphone and played the rebel anthem full blast. “Maybe they’re afraid or maybe they cannot defect, but I’m sure they enjoy listening to
You know, when your lips have been sewn shut for so long, people want to sing. They want to shout. Abdallah Syrian rebel this,” he said, raising his eyebrows and turning an ear towards the army checkpoint as if he expected a sign of appreciation. “The words are very simple. I think every Syrian can relate to them. The regime has tanks and helicopters and lots of weapons we don’t have. But we have this
music... that’s why I like to play it during the fighting.” If the Syrian revolution had a soundtrack, Yalla erhal ya Bashar would be the theme song but anti-regime music has flourished over the past year. “This is my favourite time of the day,” said Abdallah, a Free Syrian Army fighter, as he flicked his laptop open and sprawled on a foam mattress in his brother’s empty home in central Aleppo. “This one always makes me cry,” he said, putting on a song entitled Ya Hef (Oh Shame), another revolution favourite written by Samih Shuqeir, a wellknown Syrian singer exiled in Paris. The anti-regime repertoire flooding the Internet includes everything from a rap remix of Qashush’s song to heart-wrenching tales of bereavement mixing in soundbites from orphaned
children backed by Arab orchestras heavy on whining violins. The revolt has forced Syria’s celebrities to take a public stand and some of the Arab world’s best loved artists who chose to extoll the virtues of Bashar and his regime, such as actress Raghda, are now hate figures in rebel strongholds. Conversely, star singer Asala unexpectedly announced she was siding with the rebels and has since been touring the world to raise funds for the revolution. One of the most popular figures among Syrian rebels is Abdelbaset Saroot, the goalkeeper of Syria’s football youth team who joined the armed struggle. An injury sustained during clashes with the army might jeopardise his future in sport but his song “Have you no pity?” is a hit and a new career beckons. AFP

here was a grim situation in the City last summer with huge water scarcity and the water levels of reservoirs touching rock bottom. Today, the rainwater was flooding the roads and drains of the city creating huge trouble to the commuters. The scarcity and flooding of water can be managed and to a reasonable extent, if the residents try to bring rain water harvesting systems in place. The nature cycle is getting affected by extracting the ground water from the lowest possible levels with out replenishing it. The culture of apartments has further worsened the scenario by increasing the dependence on underground water in the lowest possible land area. Many are not even bothered to recharge the ground water, leaving the rain water on to the roads resulting in damaging and flooding of the roads and drains, said Abhinav Gangumalla, CEO,

The used water from the house should not be sent to the pit because of its contamination with detergents and soaps. It will spoil the purity of water that is harvested resulting in bad quality bore water, he said. Many residents have realised the importance of water with its scarcity and started practicing these methods. There are also some who use these methods just with awareness to increase the underground water levels. There are even few ecofriendly residents in the City using these methods without going for a bore-well at home, he said. There were many builders

who have applied for permissions by digging small pits in the corner of their apartments. However, they did not implement rainwater harvesting methods once they got the permissions. The pit was not maintained properly and this resulted in heavy costs at a later time. Almost 50 per cent of the costs can be saved by constructing rainwater-harvesting system, during the construction of house or an apartment. The construction costs depends on the area but can approximately range around `10, 000 per 1,000 sft and the ideal time is March-May, Abhinav said. The resident, who is buying water can also get back the money invested in the form of water in two to three years. However, it cannot be guaranteed all the water harvested in the house area will benefit only that house. A small amount of water can also go to the neighbour helping to increase over all underground water levels, he added.

Two Goa cops suspended for misbehaving PANAJI: Two police constables have been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with two local girls on Sunday night at Dona Paula jetty, a famous tourist spot here. The duo — Gaurish Matonkar and Gajanan Chari — attached to the police control van were suspended after the girls filed a formal police complaint against them. They alleged that the constables misbehaved with them, when they were returning from a friend’s birthday party on September 2. One of the girls is working as a public relation officer with a five star hotel. The complaint mentions that the constables asked them ‘personal’ questions and even insisted to know their mobile numbers, after taking away their licences. The girls said that the constables even threaten them to take to the police station in the middle of the night. The harassment, according to the complaint, continued for almost 25 minutes during which the constables acted ‘flirty’ and also against the law.d PTI

Democrats rip Romney to bits CHARLOTTE: Democrats launched a coordinated character assassination of Mitt Romney at their convention on Tuesday, skewering the wealthy Republican presidential hopeful as elite and out-of-touch. In a rowdy start to three days of political theater in Charlotte, North Carolina, speaker after speaker hammered the multimillionaire businessman as a ruthless corporate raider who lacked the moral fibre to help ordinary Americans and only wanted to look after the rich. The headline act was First Lady Michelle Obama, who didn’t even mention Romney’s name, but still drew blinding contrasts between her husband’s hard-scrabble journey and the more closeted existence of his privileged rival. Others were more blunt, like rising Hispanic star Julian Castro who claimed “Mitt Romney, quite simply, doesn’t get it” as he mocked the candidate’s suggestion that aspiring entrepreneurs could borrow money from their parents. Critics even emerged from beyond the grave with a video tribute to the late Democratic icon Ted Kennedy carefully crafted to show him annihilating Romney during a one-on-one debate from the 1994 Massachusetts Senate race. “I am pro-choice, my opponent is multiple choice,” Kennedy famously jibed, exposing Romney’s shifting convictions on the hot-button issue of abortion. In less than nine weeks, Americans must decide if the country’s first black president should be re-elected or if Romney should oust him after just one term. AFP

Ban did not name any country but Russia is President Bashar al-Assad’s main arms supplier while UN officials say Iran has made arms deliveries to his forces. The Syrian government accuses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of arming the opposition. The United States and Britain say they give non-lethal assistance to the opposition. The UN secretary general said there had to be greater international support behind the efforts of new UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to end the 18-monthold conflict, which activists say has left more than 26,000 dead. ften in the pages of Granma, the redand-black-inked Communist Party newspaper that is a daily presence in Cuban life, there is a standard sort of feature article about the island’s economic troubles. Sometimes it’s a story about bread. Other times bus service, or tires, or the sugar harvest. But the theme is generally the same: workers at a Cuban state-run company struggling to meet production quotas and public demand because of supply shortages, broken equipment and a “lack of discipline.” In one recent edition of Granma, the story was sanitary napkins. “Since 2004, investments have been made in national sanitary napkin production to improve quality,” the Granma article explained. “In addition to increasing production capacity at different plants around the country, their physical attributes have been perfected, incorporating ergonomic wings, and starting in 2008, super-absorbent material. But frequent complaints about the lack of adhesive on their wings and a lack of padding have led many to think that the investment hasn’t produced the desired result.” Once again, it was a window into an economy still at great pains to produce basic items that were abundant on Cuban store shelves more than 50 years ago, under a different system. After Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution, Cuba adopted a Soviet economic model based on central planning and the elimination of most forms of private property. By the late 1960s, Castro had nationalized all businesses — down to the last shoe shine stand and ice cream cart. GLOBAL POST

N
ot long after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray termed migrants ‘infiltrators’, his estranged cousin and Shiv Sena heir apparent Uddhav Thackeray, not wanting to be outdone in vitriolic diatribe, has said that migration from Bihar must be kept under check through permit system. It was barely 80 years ago that a short young politician popularised the concept of lebensraum (roughly translates as ‘living space’) to ascend to power in Germany. Yes, your guess is right, we are talking about Adolf Hitler, who considered anyone non-German subhuman. People of Slavic origin, Gypsies and Jews were persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, deported — and in the case of Jews, massacred to the best of his ability. The more the Thackerays (including Shiv Sena satrap, the ageing but definitely not mellowing, Bal Thackeray) unleash their polarising venom, the more it sounds like a desi version of Mein Kampf. And if one were to analyse their organisa-
tions’ agenda, it is only the lack of unchecked power that is preventing them from carrying out similar pogroms. To understand Raj’s tirades and Uddhav’s attempt to whip up ‘sons of soil’ passions, we should go back to Bombay (wasn’t Mumbai then) of the 1970s. Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena was carrying out a vitriolic (and violent) campaign against South Indians, who, according to him, were taking away the jobs and opportunities of Marathi manoos. It was under the wing of Bal Thackeray that nephew Raj and son Uddhav cut their teeth in the toxic politics of regionalism. Raj, a firebrand orator, always had more visibility in Shiv Sena and many thought he would take over from Bal Thackeray. However, it was not to be. As the worried uncle started relegating him to the margins to give more space and visibility for Uddhav, the cousins drifted apart and two factions emerged. And finally in 2006, with no more maneuvering space left within the fold of the same party, Raj walked out and formed the MNS. Ever since, Raj and his followers embarked on a Marathi chauvinism campaign; shriller, more poisonous, more violent and better organised — designed to outdo his uncle’s outfit in the same department,
on his home turf. And it is working. The audacity with which the MNS is able to continue with its politics of thuggery is an insult to our democracy and the rights guaranteed to all citizens under the Constitution. Despite its violent campaigns targeting migrant workers, especially autorickshaw and taxi drivers, the MNS boss is a free man and continues his trade with impunity. While several cases have been registered against the MNS chief and his outfit, thanks to our legal system, the bigot has never had a reason to worry or curtail his activities. Mumbai is what it is today because it has attracted and made maximum out of the best
talents from across the country. It is the migrants who form the fabric of cheap essential services that keep the city running. If people from other states were to be taken out of India’s financial capital, it would be reduced to an empty shell. South Indian, North Indian, Bihari or Bengali... anyone who is a citizen of this country has the right to travel, live and ply his trade and maintain his identity anywhere in the country. Organisations like Shiv Sena and MNS are a blot on our culture and have little difference from the Third Reich. They must be crushed before these cancer cells inspire more of their kind elsewhere and become malignant to our civilisation. The writer works for Postnoon.
EDITORIALS ‘Stop spreading misery’ Africa’s last absolute monarch
M
ore than 100,000 have fled in the month of August from Syria and counting, yet there’s no let up in the exodus nor the mass massacre there. As the world just sits and watches people being culled everyday, Ban Ki-moon cuts a sad figure asking the mighty and powerful to stop spreading misery in Syria. He did not name anyone, but it was clear as daylight that he was talking about Russia, Syria’s main arms supplier. Russia and China have been the major stumbling blocks in taking action against Basher Al-Assad. It is understandable that they too have much to lose politically and morally if they support any action against Syria, for leaders of both nations rule their people with an iron hand, rarely forgiving dissent; they would jeopardise their own standing and fear reprisals in their respective nations. Money is another important factor. But for the sake of humanity, stop the arms supply to Syria.

t certainly is something to be Africa’s last absolute monarch. King Mswati III of Swaziland has huge responsibilities on his shoulders. He appoints the prime minister, members of the cabinet and the judiciary. Of course, it is only right that a man who has such heavy responsibilites may be allowed to indulge a little, even though it chokes the exchequer of his nation that is among the world’s poorest. The Umhlanga Reed Dance is an event that allows the king to let his hair down. It’s an annual rite that sees girls as young as five dance, chant and lay reeds at the feet of King Mswati ... topless. It’s a modern world, but tradition is tradtion and the king knows it. This time there were 80,000.

itika loved playing with her daughter’s soft skin. But one day she noticed blisters and sores on her 5-year-old’s face and hands. Worried that she might be down with chicken pox, Ritika took her to the paediatrician only to be told that, the sores and rashes were a symptom of impetigo, a common skin infection, and not chicken pox. While the news did come as a relief, concerns were raised about how the girl might have contracted it and if it would scar.
WHAT IT IS “Impetigo is a common bacterial infection and can occur in children due to unhygienic conditions or can be spread from somebody else who already has it. However, impetigo can also affect people of any age group and more commonly people with diabetes or those who are immune suppressed,” says Dr Shahina Shafeeq, a City-based dermatologist.
SYMPTOMS In babies impetigo can also occur in the diaper area. This contagious skin infection is generally caused by the streptococcus bacteria and also the staphylococcus bacteria. A lot of preschool and school going children are affected by it thanks to their play habits. However, good hygiene can prevent the onset of impetigo, which often develops when the affected area has been scratched repeatedly, something children tend to do a lot.

When one refers to diabetes the general understanding is of Diabetes Mellitus which is often referred to as sugar diabetes. Another type of diabetes called Diabetes Insipidus also exists. This occurs when the body is unable to produce enough of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) or is unable to respond correctly to its effects. Symptoms include excess urination and dehydration.
DID YOU KNOW?
“Impetigo often appears as pus filled boils. If it is severe then it will be accompanied by other constitutional symptoms like fever etc,” explains Dr Shahina. There are two types of impetigo – bullous (large blisters) and nonbullous (crusted) and the latter is the more common form to affect people. This form of impetigo usually starts off with tiny blisters which eventually burst and leave small wet patches of skin that may be reddish in colour. Gradually a honey-coloured crust covers the affected area. In the bullous form of impetigo, the pustules release toxins that make them bigger fluidcontaining blisters that appear clear at first. These blisters stay longer on the skin without bursting.
There are two types of impetigo – bullous and non-bullous and the latter is the more common form to affect people.
TREATMENT “In case the impetigo is not severe then we prescribe topical antibiotic creams that can help relieve the symptoms. In case it is more severe then oral antibiotics are prescribed. We also advise the patients to maintain good hygiene as usually lack of personal hygiene is a trigger for this skin infection,” says Dr Shahina. Because the rashes and sores in impetigo are superficial it does not leave scars. The resultant redness usually fades in a few days. However, they may itch in certain cases.

RESEARCH
Genes related to Glaucoma found
Over a month, researchers gave one group of mice doses of alcohol that are equivalent to double the legal driving limit in humans.
HEAVY DRINKING negates recovery from trauma WASHINGTON: Heavy drinkers not only face a higher risk of car accidents and domestic violence, but alcohol also actually rewires the brain, negating recovery from a traumatic experience also, says a US research. “There’s a whole spectrum to how people react to a traumatic event,” said study author Thomas Kash, assistant professor of pharmacology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. “Its the recovery that we’re looking at — the ability to say ‘this is not dangerous anymore’. Basically, our
research shows that chronic exposure to alcohol can cause a deficit with regard to how our cognitive brain centres control our emotional brain centres,” said Kash, the journal Nature Neuroscience reports. “A history of heavy alcohol abuse could impair a critical mechanism for recovering from a trauma, and in doing so put people at greater risk for PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) and alcohol abuse,” said National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) scientist Andrew Holmes, who
conducted the study with Kash, according to a North Carolina statement. Over a month, researchers gave one group of mice doses of alcohol equivalent to double the legal driving limit in humans. A second group of mice was given no alcohol. The team then used mild electric shocks to train all the mice to fear the sound of a brief tone. When the tone was repeatedly played without the accompanying electric shock, the mice with no alcohol exposure gradually stopped fearing it. The mice
with chronic alcohol exposure, on the other hand, froze in place each time the tone was played, even long after the electric shocks had stopped. The pattern is similar to what is seen in patients with PTSD, who have trouble overcoming fear even when they are no longer in a dangerous situation. The PTSD is a debilitating condition that follows a terrifying event. Often, its victims have persistent frightening thoughts and memories of their ordeal and feel emotionally numb. IANS
SINGAPORE: Scientists have isolated three new genes linked to Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma (PACG), a leading cause of blindness, which affects 15 million people worldwide, 80 percent of whom live in Asia. A team of scientists carried out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 1,854 PACG cases and 9,608 controls of over five sample collections in Asia. They performed validation experiments in another 1,917 PACG cases and 8,943 controls collected from a sample. This research carried out by scientists from the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), with Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), National University of Singapore (NUS), National University Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, is the first to study PACG genetics using a genome-wide perspective, the journal Nature Genetics reports. This finding confirms the long-standing suspicion of Aung Tin, principal project investigator, who is professor of ophthalmology at NUS. Tin has worked on PACG for over 10 years and believes, from clinical observations, that the disease is strongly hereditary, according to a statement of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore. “This provides further evidence that genetic factors play a role in development of PACG. The results may lead to new insights into disease understanding and open the possibility of novel treatments in the future as well as the potential of early identification of people at risk of the disease,” said Tin. SERI is the national body for ophthalmic and vision research in Singapore. The GIS is a research institute under the umbrella of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore. IANS
BREAKTHROUGH
Gene therapy restores olfactory sense ? WASHINGTON: Scientists have restored olfactory sense in mice through gene therapy for the very first time — potentially opening the way for people to regain their sense of smell lost since birth or owing to disease. The breakthrough in curing congenital anosmia, may also aid
research on other conditions that stem from problems with the cilia. Those tiny hair-shaped structures on the surfaces of cells throughout the body are involved in many diseases. Researchers from the University of Michigan Medical School caution that it will take
time for their work to affect human treatment, and that it will be most important for people who have lost their sense of smell due to a genetic disorder, rather than those who lose it due to aging, head trauma, or chronic sinus problems. “Using gene therapy in a
mouse model of cilia dysfunction, we were able to rescue and restore olfactory function, or sense of smell,” said senior author Jeffrey Martens. “Essentially, we induced the neurons that transmit the sense of smell to re-grow the cilia.” The mice in the study all had
a severe genetic defect that affected a protein called IFT88, causing a lack of cilia throughout their bodies. Such mice are prone to poor feeding and to early death as a result. In humans, the same genetic defect is fatal, according to a university statement. IANS

She has teamed up with an NGO named Nalandaway Foundation to raise funds to educate 25 children from marginalised sections of the society. Talking to Postnoon, Priya Anand said, “I don’t like celebrating my birthday and every year I strive to do something to make a difference in our society. I had met Sriram, the founder of Nalandaway Foundation, at a concert and he suggested that I could help their organisation raise funds to educate children. The initial plan was to raise funds for 25 children; however, now I have been given the task of choosing these 25 children from a list of 100. It really is a tough task to pick out only few when each one of them has a heartbreaking story to tell. Right now, I am trying to get in touch with as many people as I can to raise the funds and I request everyone to come forward and donate for this noble cause. You can donate whatever amount you want through www.orangestreet.in and every penny that we raise will have an impact on the future of these children.” The actress is currently in Hyderabad where she is shooting for a song for her upcoming film Ko Ante Koti.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

MEMORIAL STATUE
CINE BYTES
Amy Winehouse to be immortalised in bronze?
L
ate singer Amy Winehouse’s parents are planning to erect a bronze statue of the singer in Camden. The family of the Back To Black star, who died last July after a long battle with alcohol and substance abuse, are in talks with staff at the Roundhouse where the proposed statue would be located. Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse said that the family had initially wanted to place a memorial bench close to her Camden Square home, reported Sun Online. “Amy was in love with Camden but for us, it is a place that we associate with both heartbreak and love, because we loved Amy dearly. We wanted to have a bench in her memory outside her house in Camden Square, but there are so many hoops you have to jump through to do that,” he said. Mitch’s second wife Jane confirmed that the family was now considering placing a statue outside the Chalk Farm Road venue where the singer last performed. “We’re in very early discussions. It wouldn’t go up till at least 2013, but for those who loved Amy’s music and all those who knew her around Camden, it’ll be something very special to remember her by,” Jane said. PTI

INDIA VS NEW ZEALAND
End to a rough patch Indian cricket is back on track after bumping through a rocky road over the past year and a half. But it is still early to say whether this early success will last for long or not. Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur
I
ndian cricket is back on track after bumping through a rocky road over the past year and a half. It is still early to say whether this early success will last. It may be argued that New Zealand were down in the dumps and the 2-0 victory was a foregone conclusion. But what matters is the way India went about their work to get there. The spine was beginning to show up again. The real test will come when India take on England later in the season. However, India's confidence level has certainly gone up. Refreshingly, it was the new brigade which provided the impetus. The second Test was tough. The New Zealand batsmen finally learnt that aggression is a good method to counter spinners. Inspired by their captain Ross Taylor, New Zealand had one of their better days which set up a tense encounter. Needing 260 to win, India seemed to be on course but lost wickets at crucial intervals. But Virat Kohli and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni showed calmness under pressure which
was missing earlier. That was a key moment for Indian cricket. Kohli personified the new Indian spirit of cricket. He is finally expressing himself in the longer version of the game. He seems very assured at the crease and has learnt to bide his time and wait for the loose deliveries in contrast to his aggro in the shorter versions. He is the rising star for India. Ravichandran Ashwin used the conditions well and cemented his place in the team. Flighting the ball contributed a lot to his Man of the Series performances.
India's confidence level has certainly gone up. Refreshingly, it was the new brigade which provided the impetus. He was well complemented by Pragyan Ojha who had a productive series. Cheteshwar Pujara came back after a long lay-off and scored a fine hundred. But he needs to eschew the hook shot particularly against England.
Suresh Raina was a disappointment. He has the talent but somehow it does not translate into runs in Tests. Still, he must be persisted with. This may help him sort out his batting. India's most valuable player was Dhoni. He put his hands up whenever his side was in trouble. And batting aggressively helped him to be consistent. This indirectly helped his captaincy and his mind never drifted throughout the series. The biggest disappointment was Sachin Tendulkar. His lack of footwork brought about his

downfall, either bowled or leg before. He seemed rusty more than out of form. But India need not worry yet. The Little Master is sure to get his act together against the Big Boys. A great player like Tendulkar knows when to quit. And the current spotlight on him will not bother him. New Zealand ended the series with some hope. They finally realised that a clicking scoreboard rather than a static one eases pressure. Trent Boult and Tim Southee improved on tour. Doug Bracewell showed all-round capabilities which augers well for the future. Taylor's innings in Bangalore was awesome. He smashed the spinners all over the ground and his innings rubbed off on the lower order. He also captained the side very well and was proactive at all times. New Zealand have a good mixture of experience and youth. Jeetan Patel's fine comeback will provide much needed help to Daniela Vettori when he returns to the side. India can certainly look ahead with optimism. The transition has begun and the young players are almost ready for any challenge. The top of the cricket ladder is a bit shaky at the moment. By getting into the winning habit, India can easily scale it.

TRACK WORK
Oscar returns to defend 100m gold Pistorius, who became a high-profile athelete after he was the first doubleamputee to compete at the ‘12 Games, is out to defend his 100m title. PHIL HAZLEWOOD Agence France-Presse LONDON: South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius (right) returns to the track on Wednesday, days after he suffered his first 200m defeat in nine years and complained that his competitors had an unfair advantage. Pistorius, the most highprofile athlete at the London Games after he became the first double-amputee to compete at the Olympics last month, is out to defend his T44 100m title. Organisers have billed the showpiece straight sprint as the race of the competition, with all eight finallists
capable of running under 11secs. The field includes Britain’s Jonnie Peacock, the current world record holder with 10.85sec. Peacock, 19, lost his right leg below-the-knee to meningitis at the age of five, and trains under Dan Pfaff, who coached Canada’s Donovan Bailey to Olympic 100m gold in Atlanta in 1996. Pistorius won the T44 title in Beijing four years ago in a photo finish from his great rival Jerome Singleton of the United States, a former National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) intern who won silver in Beijing. But the “Blade Runner” has warned that
winning gold again will be tough because of the progress made in the event
over the last four years — and because it is not his favoured event.

US OPEN
Ferrer in last eight, Djokovic frustrated
EMOTIONAL PREDICTION
Novak Djokovic was left a very frustrated player by torrential rains that caused more than six hours to be lost from the programme, severely upsetting the schedule. DAVE JAMES Agencie France-Presse NEW YORK: Spain’s David Ferrer (right) reached his fourth Grand Slam quarter-final of 2012 on Tuesday when he beat Richard Gasquet 7-5, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 in a rain-hit US Open last-16 tie which took over seven hours to complete. Second seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic only had 10 minutes on court, which allowed him to take a 2-0 lead over Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in his fourth-round match. Andy Roddick, the 2003 champion, who is playing in his last tournament before retirement, was into a first-set tiebreak with 2009 winner Juan Martin Del Potro. Serb eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic was 5-2 up on Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber when play was finally called off for the day at 2130 local time. The chaos meant that
David Ferrer happy to live in shadows Softly-spoken David Ferrer is happy to be the US Open fourth seed nobody mentions, preferring to let his racquet do his talking for him at Flushing Meadows. Ferrer, 30, reached his fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal of 2012 when he beat France’s Richard Gasquet 7-5, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 on Tuesday in a last-16 tie which was spread over seven hours because of two lengthy rain delays.
Djokovic was looking at possibly having to play on four of the remaining five days if he is to retain his title. But with more
rain expected on every day until Saturday, the prospect of the men’s final being played on the third Monday for a fifth succes-
sive year was edging closer. The rain was good news for Ferrer, who was safely into the last eight, and world number one Roger Federer, who hasn’t played since Saturday, having enjoyed a walkover from Mardy Fish in his fourth-round tie. Ferrer is the top-ranked Spaniard here in the absence of the injured Rafael Nadal.
Stosur likes Azarenka but backs Serena NEW YORK: World No 1 Victoria Azarenka is playing well but Olympic and Wimbledon champion Serena Williams is the one to beat for the US Open women’s crown, according to 2011 US Open winner Samantha Stosur. Australian seventh seed Stosur, whose repeat bid ended at the hands of Azarenka in Tuesday’s quarter-finals, shocked Williams in last year’s Arthur Ashe Stadium hardcourt final but sees little hope for such a stunner this year. “Serena, when she’s on, is pretty tough to beat,” Stosur said, adding, “She’s the favourite to go on and win. “She has been playing incredibly.” AFP
Sharapova, Roddick left in limbo For the seventh year in a row, rain has caused major disruptions at the season’s final Grand Slam event. JIM SLATER Agencie France-Presse NEW YORK: More than six hours of rain delays struck at the US Open on Tuesday, rescuing Maria Sharapova from a woeful start, extending Andy Roddick’s career for at least a day and leaving Novak Djokovic in limbo. In the only completed women’s match, top seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus shook off a 75-minute rain delay after just 11 minutes to reach a

semi-final by beating defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5). “It’s never pleasant to stop the momentum but it was the same for both of us,” Azarenka said. In the only men’s match to be completed, Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer advanced to a quarter-final by defeating France’s R Gasquet 7-5, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4. “The rain made it very difficult,” said Ferrer. “But the fans have been great and I wanted to win it for them.”
Four unfinished singles matches were suspended until Wednesday, with French 11th seed Marion Bartoli leading Russian third seed Sharapova 4-0 until being rescued by the rain that forced them off the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium. On the men’s side, defending champion Djokovic, the second seed from Serbia, managed a break for a 2-0 lead over Swiss 18th seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the 10 minutes they were on the court before showers struck. Djokovic, or whoever reaches
the final from his half of the draw except Ferrer, might have to play four of the final five days of the event, provided weather allows for an on-time men’s finish for the first time since 2007. Rain, however, is in the forecast until the weekend. Serbian eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic seized a 5-2 lead on German 19th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber before the last deluge shut down play at about 9pm, 30 minutes before officials suspended resumption to Wednesday.

ITALY’S DEL PIERO ON BRINK OF SYDNEY SIGNING

Alonso for automatic World Cup qualification MADRID: Defending World Cup holders should qualify automatically for the next competition, Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso (right), part of the Spain squad that won the 2010 tournament, said on Tuesday. “Logically, as in many competitions and sports, the champion has the right to defend their title. FIFA does not allow for it but I think it is sufficiently important and fair that the winner have the right to qualify,” he told a news conference ahead of Spain’s friendly Friday against Saudi Arabia. In making the changes to the rules, football world governing body FIFA argued that the four years between competitions was a long time for any team to retain its strength. After taking on Saudi Arabia in Pontevedra in northeastern Spain, the 2008 and 2012 European champions will face Georgia in Tbilisi on September 11 in their opening qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup
Half of Brazil World Cup stadiums half done BRASILIA: Less than two years before the 2014 World Cup kicks off in Brazil, half of the 12 host stadiums are at least 50 per cent completed, the sports ministry said on Tuesday. Work on Rio’s iconic Maracana stadium, which will host the World Cup final, is 62 per cent completed, according to a progress review posted on the government’s official World Cup page. Venues in Brasilia and the northeastern city of Salvador are more than 70 per cent completed. But the arena in the northeast city of Natal is only 30 per cent done and work on the stadium in the southern city of Porto Alegre is just 33 per cent completed.

LONDON: Former England striker Michael Owen (above) has joined Stoke City on a free transfer, subject to Premier League Board approval, the club announced Tuesday. Owen, who made his name at Liverpool before joining Real Madrid, has signed a one-year deal following his release from Stoke’s Premier League rivals Manchester United at the end of last season. He has enjoyed an impressive career, scoring 221 goals in 473 appearances. But the 32-year-old’s career has been blighted by a series of injury problems and he has started just one Premier League match in the last two seasons. And it is that fitness record which has led to reports, still to be confirmed by Stoke, that he has signed on a pay-as-you play deal.

LONDON: At any other time in his career, Jermain Defoe (right) would be a nervous wreck this week as he waits to discover if he will be selected to lead England’s attack against Moldova, but a heart-breaking series of family tragedies have given the Tottenham striker a new perspective on life. goal-scoring display in Friday’s opening World Cup qualifier. The 29-year-old is competing with Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge for a place in Roy Hodgson’s starting line-up and, for someone who has always treated football as by far the most important thing in his life, in the past Defoe would have been shattered if he doesn’t get the nod. But not anymore. A devastating sequence of deaths in his family has made Defoe realise that there are far more important things in life than football.
Defoe’s father Jimmy died of throat cancer just before the start of Euro 2012 and he flew home from England’s base in Poland to attend the funeral before returning to the tournament. As if that wasn’t enough heartache for Defoe to cope with, he then learned while he was on holiday after the Euros that his 20-year-old cousin Hannah had been electrocuted as she dived into a hotel pool on the Caribbean island of St Lucia. Those two tragic incidents hit Defoe especially hard.
SEOUL: Germany-based midfielder Koo Ja-Cheol will miss South Korea’s World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan next week because of an injured ankle, sports officials said today (Wednesday). The Korea Football Association said the Augsburg player, 23, was not included in the squad that left for Tashkent on Tuesday. South Korea, top of Asian qualifying Group A after beating Qatar 4-1 and Lebanon 3-0, take on the Uzbeks next Tuesday. Uzbekistan have only one point from two games. Koo’s agent said he had sustained an injury to his right ankle in a league game against Schalke 04 on Saturday. Koo, who captained South Korea’s Olympic team to a bronze medal in London, moved to Augsburg on loan from Wolfsburg earlier this year.
