Three held for smuggling girls POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com
A
three-member gang that was engaged in procuring girls from rural districts for sex work in Hyderabad was arrested by the Dharur police in RR district. Identified as Mahinder, 30, Shaikh Jabber, 36, and Babu Pradhan, 34, the gang lives in Balanagar area and frequently visits rural districts to spot poor
girls who could be ensnared with job promises and then sell them to brothels in Hyderabad. According to sub-inspector Krishna of Dahrur, these men also go to other states. On the night of July 30, the trio was going from Tandur to Vikarabad in a SUV. When they reached Kotpally cross roads, a police team that was conducting a special drive stopped them. The police found two girls
in the car and on interrogation the trio confessed they were being taken to Hyderabad for ‘work’. On inquiring further it was revealed that they were booked for working in clubs and parties and had been paid some money in advance. “It turned out to be prostitution, plain and simple,” the SI said. The three have been arrested and the girls were shifted to a rescue shelter.
outstanding. This bothered Wajid and his business began to dwindle. Consequently, he could not pay what Waseem was asking for. Threats followed and the pressure proved too much. On Thursday, when he was alone at home, Wajid consumed poison. The family that had gone for Ramzan prayers returned to see him unconscious. He was immediately shifted to Osmania Hospital where he was declared, ‘brought dead.’
Despite finding a suicide note that explained why he was taking the extreme step, the Dabeerpura police are dilly-dallying in the investigation, Wajid’s family complained. They allege that the police have stuck a deal with Waseem and that is the reason he has not yet been booked for harassment and abetting suicide. When contacted, the Dabeerpura police said the investigation was ‘going on.’

BC leaders toy with idea of separate party

CM to meet PM on gas issue INKESHAF AHMED and RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA feedback@postnoon.com
Fed up of their issues being ignored by major political parties, the backward classes community has proposed setting up its own party. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com
C
onstant wooing by major political parties in the State seems to have propelled the Backward Classes (BC) community to toy with the idea of forming its own political party. The community, comprising 90 castes and sub-castes, loosely constitutes about 50 per cent of the State population. At a meeting held in Hyderabad on Saturday, leaders belonging to 46 BC organisations and BC employees’ unions, have decided to float their own party for all-out development of the community. The main objective behind setting up a new political outfit is to achieve an appropriate role in social, educational and political fields proportionate to the BC population. “We have been demanding a proportional representation of BCs in legislative bodies and in government employment for decades. But unfortunately, no political party took serious cognizance of our demands. Even the BC leaders of these political parties have grossly ignored the needs of the community owing to their party compulsions,” State BC Welfare Association president R Krishnaiah told Postnoon.

ndhra Pradesh chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy left for Delhi this morning to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue of allocation of gas from KG Basin to Ratnagiri power project in Maharashtra. The CM is accompanied by a delegation of cabinet ministers and MPs from the State. At the meeting, the CM will take up with the PM the issue of gas allocation to the State and request the Prime Minister to immediately cancel the allotment made to Ratnagiri by the Union government earlier. The CM’s decision to meet the Prime Minister comes in the wake of State roads & buildings minister Dharmana Prasad Rao’s failure to convince Union petroleum and natural gas minister S Jaipal Reddy regarding the gas allocation. It is learnt that the minister expressed his helplessness in this matter. The decision to allocate 2MMSCMD to Ratnagiri was taken by the empowered group of ministries following which the government was criticised for depriving the State of gas supply. AP will now get only 1.48 MMSCMD of gas. The variable cost at which ONGC/Reliance gas was supplied to the state is at `2.10 a unit.
According to Krishnaiah, if the BCs float their own political party, they would get their legitimate due in politics and in other areas. But the BC leaders have linked the decision to form a political outfit with the response of major political parties in the state. The idea is to demand the ruling and opposition political parties to allocate 50 per cent of the seats to BCs in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections and creation of BC subplan with a funding of `10,000 crore, hike in fee reimbursement and scholarship budget. “The TDP has announced a declaration for BCs recently. It is a welcome sign. We want all other parties to spell out their stand on our demands. If they don’t react to our demands, we will have our own political party,” Krishnaiah added. Another prominent BC leader and former member of State BC Commission V Krishnamohan Rao felt that it would not be fair on the part of BCs not to give an opportunity to political parties to spell out their stand. Evincing a cautious optimism, Rao said, “Before plunging into politics, I think it’s very important to see the response of political parties. The Telugu Desam Party’s announcement is a welcome sign in this direction.”

Is ‘Face-to-Face’ losing its appeal? Official laxity and CBD are causing meetings to get cancelled. Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com
A
nother month’s first Saturday passed by without the GHMC’s much awaited interactive programme known as Faceto-Face. Supposed to be an interaction between the mayor and the general public, the topic for discussion was to be about the heavy rainfall in July that took a toll on the basic civic amenities and inconvenienced public, it was cancelled at the eleventh hour. Despite the fact that last month proved to be the most challenging for both the general public and the corporation, the authority has shown little interest in addressing public grievances. People and senior
citizens who wanted to speak to the mayor and GHMC commissioner might have to wait for another month or till the completion of the much hyped CoP-11. Although the mayor returned from his pilgrimage several days ago, the GHMC failed to conduct the programme for the month of
August. This was the second successive month, where the public could not air their problems. It may be recalled that in July the meeting was called off using the mayor’s campaign tour to Karimnagar. This time however, no clear reasons were given. Sources say, that with the CoP-11 coming up, the GHMC might just cancel Spemtember’s meeting too. As the projects attached with the international conference are now top priority, officials will be fully engaged. The perception is that Face-to-Face is losing its charm. The previously 90 minute sessions were reduced to 60 minuted and the number of calls also dropped. The reasons cited by observers is that officials are not too keen on addressing issues.

A heritage building fit to shoot horror films Passed between the GHMC and the HMDA, this great heritage building in an advanced stage of decay, craves for attention. DEEPAK DESHPANDE

E
ven as the mounds of structure continue to fall apart, the Old Jail at RP Road, a known heritage building, craves for attention. A protected monument, the Old Jail was declared as a heritage structure in 2006. One of the notorious places in the history of Secunderabad, this more than 200-year-old building was used as a prison for high profile captives from various parts of the country under the British. According to local businessmen, its importance is more than a monument as these prisoners were mostly ‘freedom fighters’ of that time, deported to the base in Hyderabad. The announcement of this structure was dramatic indeed, as the GHMC had some other plans. Even as the municipal body was pondering on ways to find a solution, the announcement of this being a heritage was like music to the ears of all the tenants. However, even after getting the heritage status, the structure spread across a vast area has been neglected. “The issue had become a football between the two authorities GHMC and HMDA, whose teams visited it several times but nothing was sorted out. AP should learn from other states like Rajasthan and Karnataka when it comes to preserving monuments,” says one of the tenants, who do not want
to be named. There are also rumours that as the GHMC’s plans did not materialise, the authority now wants the dilapidated structure to slowly get decayed, increasing the scope for complete demolition. They point out this being one of the reasons as no repair work was conducted since its announcement as a heritage structure. “We had given several representations to higher officials, but nothing has come out of it. For years the association itself is taking care of minor repairs like white wash,” says Srinivas Malathkar, secretary, and Old Jail Tenants Association. Each year, the GHMC gets an average revenue of `12 lakh from some 52 tenants. Some have shops inside the main building since the tenancy was approved in 1932 and others are
the sheds attached to the main structure. There are also some government offices like Municipal Labour Dispensary, which provides medical assistance to the government labourers in the area.
We cannot trust the building; it may fall any time. Anyone can die under it, similar to the collapse of a building in neighbourhood last week where three people died. M Kalavathi, dispensary employee
The dispensary is in a poor condition. With no higher officials visiting the place, it appears to be ideal for shooting a movie on ghosts. “We cannot trust the building; it may fall any time. Anyone can die under it, similar to the collapse of a building in neighbourhood last week where three people died. At that time media people were interested in covering this structure, but since then no one has come. We were lucky enough, as mounds of structure fall in our absence,” says M Kalavathi of the dispensary. Similar to this dispensary, one Unani Hospital was there on the other side. The government shifted or completely closed it in the recently years. Owing to the poor maintenance, the roof overhead collapsed recently. Regular dumping of garbage by outsiders and urination in the precincts of the Old Jail is another fact that risks the locals who want save the sanctity of the heritage structure. According to the officials, as the Heritage Conservation Committee has forwarded this case recently, the GHMC has taken up this under special consideration. “We have appointed a consultant as part of the measures to restore the structure. He will access the needs like what materials to be used for repair, if any. GHMC will be taking up the works following the suggestions,” said additional commissioner, Planning, K Dhanunjaya Reddy.
as it a matter of sour grapes? BJP’s patriarch Lal Krishna Advani’s remark yesterday that a nonCongress, non-BJP leader will head the next government at the Centre is seen in the party circles as a deliberate move to run down Narendra Modi and bolster the scope for Nitish Kumar. State party leaders are unwilling to come on record. But two leaders believe it was an instance of grapes gone sour as the ‘Rathi’ has realised that he will stand no chance to occupy the PM post. “He perhaps does not want a BJP leader younger to him becoming the PM,” a leader hazarded a guess. The BJP leaders are said to have been embarrassed and anguished at the untimely remark of Advani. He has a penchant to drop bombs (like the one he detonated while in Pakistan saying Jinnah is a Mahatma). It will take some deft work on the part of the party’s satraps to undo the damage he did, opined the Lotus leaders.

Is a foreign degree worth it? The recent Californian university incident, the Tri Valley fiasco of 2010 and frequent reports of Indian students put in a tight corner at US educational institutions impelled Postnoon to seek the truth: Does a foreign degree ensure a natural advantage in the job market back in India? FILE PIC

“I
t was my childhood dream to pursue my masters in the United States. I fulfilled my dream and returned proudly with a US degree with the firm belief that I am one up on others in the job market. However, the harsh reality hit me hard when I realised that it’s not that easy. If I had expected a smooth sail, it was my fault. It proved a hard struggle,” recalls Preethi Rao, an IT professional. Preethi is not alone in the experience. Hundreds who have a hard-earned US degree find they are ‘overqualified’ in the Indian job market. “When I came back, it was a struggle for one and a half years. Everywhere I went, I was told that I was overqualified for the post. Looking at the market conditions, companies want to employee students with normal degrees so that they don’t have to pay them a big salary. A few companies like GE offered me a job back in the US, considering that I did my masters there, but getting the right job according to my education in India was a task,” said Aparna Rao, who did her masters in computer science from California State University. One of the major problems that students face is experience. Most companies expect students to have a minimum of one or two years of experience. Students complain that during their stay
abroad, all they do is work on campus or at restaurants, which are not counted as professional experience. Also, staying back there and working is not feasible as work permit and PR (permanent residency) rules keep changing. “I wanted to work there but it’s difficult. One needs to get a PR and the rules to get one in Australia keep changing. One needs to have a minimum eight point GPA and the course should also match the other PR requirements. CPI wants all-party meet on power crisis C
PI State secretary Dr K Narayana (right) on Sunday slammed the Kiran Kumar Reddy government for failing to protect the State’s interests in allotment of power and gas from the Central government. He alleged the State was facing power and gas crises due to the Centre’s step-motherly treatment. The CPI leader alleged that the State government remained in coma even as the Centre was diverting gas, causing injustice to the State. A few students who come back to India with an international degree are offered jobs for freshers, but with a better pay package. On the job scale, they are on level one but in terms of salary, they get as much as a level 2 employee would get. “These days, every second person goes abroad, especially from Andhra Pradesh. So it’s no big deal to have an international degree to one’s credit. Post my masters from London School of Business, I was offered the same job which a normal graduate with two years’ experience was offered,” said Bharath P. A few students choose academics as this is one field in
which they believe that their international degree matters. Rithuraj, a faculty member at Lievens’ Institute of Film & Electronic media (LIFE), says “Getting an international degree in creative arts is not a job guarantee, really, more so in the country where you studied. Since filmmaking and video production are not conventional “jobs” as such, it’s a struggle finding something to do that’s really in your field. So once you are fed up of stints at fast food chains or an Italian restaurant, most people with a foreign degree usually return home.” A foreign degree also trains you academically and grills contemporary arts theories into you, which makes you comfortable with academicians and gives you the added option of entering a job in academics, which is the case with me. Academics is good — it pays well, guarantees the company of intellectuals and you can still have the same amount of fun training people as you would if you were working in the industry.” Perhaps the only plus point about studying abroad is that it makes one much more of a professional than the courses in Indian colleges do. Since one has a better sense of aesthetics, a better technical knowledge and above all, more confidence about one’s ideas, it’s more or less easy to get that opening job in a field where nobody cares for the resume with an international stamp on it.
he Samaikhya Andhra Samithi Party (SASP) has decided to organize “Chalo Hyderabad” in September to create awareness on the need to retain a united Andhra Pradesh among the people across the State. Speaking to mediapersons on Sunday, SASP president G Kumar Chowdary Yadav urged the State government to rein in Telangana activists, who have planned a “Millennium March” next month. Yadav said that they would lay siege to the
office of the director-general of police if permission was granted for “Telangana DhoomDham” programme at Ganesh pandals in the region. He also condemned the Telangana Advocates’ JAC for attacking Eluru MP Kavuri Sambasiva Rao’s house in Hyderabad. He observed that the JAC’s actions lowered the dignity of law profession. Questioning the BJP as to why it did not support small states in UP and Maharashtra, Yadav demanded that the BJP
should introduce a Bill for division of UP and Maharashtra into smaller states. He demanded that the Centre set up a Special Development Board for the Telangana region. Yadav said the national parties were not favouring small states at national level now. He demanded that the Centre announce a statement on united Andhra Pradesh at the earliest. He threatened to intensify Samaikya Andhra agitation if the Union government failed to concede their demand. NSS

The monster grid failure was blamed on greedy states consuming more than their allotted power quotas as they sought to meet spikes in demand. Part of the demand surge comes from Indians’ adopting electricity-guzzling lifestyles which adds to the strain on the grid from industrial users and businesses. Experts warn blackouts like those that knocked out power to one half of India’s population, could be the way of the future unless the government fixes the creaking sector.

Asked about resentment in Italy towards Germany and complaints of German arrogance in its handling of the debt crisis, Monti told Monday’s edition of the German news magazine Der Spiegel that he was “concerned". “The pressures, which have accompanied the eurozone in recent years, already bear the traits of a psychological breakup of Europe," Monti said. “We must work hard to contain it." JAMMU: At least seven people, including two women, have been killed and scores injured in heavy rains that led to many houses collapsing in the remote mountainous areas of Jammu region, officials said Monday. The flood situation was improving with water receding from major rivers, an official said. The administration has begun assessing the damage caused by the floods across the region, including loss to the crop. Road connectivity has also been restored in most areas. Houses have collapsed mainly in mountainous areas of Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, Reasi, Udhampur and parts of Kathua district. Besides five people getting killed under the debris of collapsed houses and over two dozen injured, “two women were killed after slipping and falling from a narrow hilly track in Gool area of Ramban district”, the official said. How to hatch a dragon baby
“M
y relationship with my parents is broken and my wife is suffering from depression. F**k the Year of the Dragon.” That’s how Justin Lin, a 38-yearold power utility employee, described the fallout from his and his wife’s failed efforts to produce a baby during the Chinese zodiac’s most auspicious year. “We didn’t want another kid, but my father made such a big deal about having a dragon grandson that my wife finally relented. When she didn’t get pregnant, they acted like it was her fault. We are both so stressed that she stopped eating and I started smoking again,” said Lin, taking a drag of his 長壽, or Longlife, cigarette. The Longlife’s an irony that’s not lost on Lin, who lives in the same west Taipei apartment building as his parents. “If they don’t kill me, these will,” he said, referring first to his parents and then pointing to the cigarette, popular among the island republic’s truck drivers and construction workers. Lin may have had problems this year, but many others have not. And that’s good news for Taiwan, which has been struggling to prop up one of the world’s lowest birth rates for years. In Chinese culture, babies born in the Year of the Dragon, which began on Jan. 23, are supposedly gifted with healthy doses of strength and luck. They are also believed to excel academically. It’s those traits that are producing a baby boom in Taiwan. According to the Ministry of the Interior, 107,508 newborns were welcomed in the first six months of 2012, a 17.29 percent increase from the same period last year. GLOBAL POST

They are not in the purview of the GHMC or the government, as it comes under the ‘civic sense’ and local culture.

WHAT ARE THEY? Let us suppose a Liang-Su from Singapore has decided to take a trip to the famed Charminar. What are the sights that provide him an eyeful en route? n After he leaves the hotel in Gachibowli or Banjara Hills, he will realise in a few minutes that he has taken a suicidal move. He will say prayers in silence as he sees different wheels — from push cart to Porsche — competing with one another while pedestrians run across like a rabbit or trot like a fox. His chauffeur, he will see for his horror and relief, nose ahead of red signal and gives a honk as he pleases. The driver, a bearded young man in a fashionable T shirt, would swear in his native tongue at the lesser mortals in Maruti or bike to keep off when the royalty is in visit. n Su will wrinkle his nose at the unsightly view of men opening their zips and unloading at the wall along the road. n The Singaporean dignitary will also have the privilege to see people coming and dumping steaming waste on the unoccupied niche at the corner and it is promptly pounced on by street dogs with delight.

If the honest driver is weak- hearted he rather keep the number 108 handy. All along, Su will wonder how the tuk-tuk maintains its own rules. He will learn how free a country India is. He will also realise the auto drivers are the most free people with a will and leave to spit along the way, not to bath for months , not to wear the auto driver’s shirt and pack his tiny vehicle with passengers like sardines in tin. If you don’t want to be cursed at, here is the solution, belated though, will prove a boon not just to the visitors but to the ill-treated tax-paying citizens of Hyderabad. Of the `125 Crore you plan to squander, you immediately commission four solid waste treatment plants in four directions of the city. Dirt treated, not removed, will give City a natural glow. This will also curb mosquito menace and give relief to the poor suffering people around Jawaharnagar. Try not to remove but preserve the trees which are on roads. Preserving is an art and it saves many years of labour. Roads can well be planned keeping the trees, the road you plan is not Express highway. Put a heavy penalty on the litterers (I suggest start it from Jubilee Hills where the Shakers and Movers live) and have the guts to tell them they can’t help punishing the littering because it is implemented by the committee called ‘Eco-terrorists’ who will not listen to messengers of god.
TAILEND Many visiting dignitaries will be writing about their Hyderabad experience later online and in print. I recall a blog a German scribbled in his blog after his visit to Hyderabad in connection with his tour and travel business. “All roads are perpetually in festive mood. Full of men and machines, each contributing as much carbon as possible. All weirdos. And for the traffic rules? “ Gosh! Oh! Gosh.” That would suffice your Worshipful Mayor! EDITORIALS Tolerance and trust need of the hour
A
sad day yesterday when a man unleashed terror opening fire at people at a gurudwara in Wisconsin in the US. Incidents like these are proof that no one is safe, no place is safe. The fear and distrust following 9/11 that haunted Sikhs and people of other community settled in the US have made a comeback now. In the hue and cry that ensue after violence of this sort, we forget one very important thing. Ignorance of people about their society that makes any country is the root cause of such tragedies. After 9/11, angry Americans would target anyone who looked different, even if their victims were American citizens. They could not understand that though these people looked different and belonged to other religions, they were honest folk inadvertently caught up in the confusion set off by terrorists. The need of the hour is to keep restraint and build trust and tolerance among various sections in the US. This applies to us Indians too.

here had been many doubts if Usain Bolt could replicate his Olympic feat of Beijing in London. Hamstring injuries have been niggling the strapping Jamaican, and a couple of setbacks before the greatest sports carnival had sowed wariness in the minds of even his staunchest fans. What had been worrying Bolt was his start. When he stopped worrying about it, things changed. This is a lesson for all of us, for it’s the ending that matters, not how and when we start.

eadership is about the decisions you make and the actions you take every day. The world is waiting and leadership is a choice — and it starts with you. Believe it or not, every day you are offered many opportunities to prove yourself, to learn from experience, to expand your knowledge, to think different, to be unique and to be the best ‘you’ you can be. More often than not, we are so blinded by trivial issues that these opportunities just seem to fade into the background. But at AIESEC (Association Internationale des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales), experience is anything but ‘fading material'. The AIESEC experience consists of every possible flavour for you to taste and grow as an individual. AIESEC is the world’s

History of AIESEC The idea behind AIESEC started in the 1930s, when representatives from schools across Europe exchanged information about various programmes and schools that specialised in business. In 1944, the two students Jaroslav Zich of Czechoslovakia and Stanislas Callens of Belgium founded AIESE, the predecessor of AIESEC which was officially founded in 1948.

They use the experience, skills and inspiration AIESEC provided them to become agents of positive change within today’s society. As for me, AIESEC has given me everything from A to Z. It gave me the chance to lead a team, participate in a group, work with international citi-
zens, create and maintain an extremely huge and effective network, work on my business ethics and work on social issues every day. When I first joined the organisation, one of the vicepresidents said, “AIESEC is like a supermarket. Anything you want is available here. It is up to you to chose the right things that will make your AIESEC experience the best one!” The experience, knowledge, growth and exposure one gets working for this organisation is absolutely something to cherish forever. I will end by saying that if you’re someone who’s looking for that catalyst to go beyond his/her limitations and get an edge over other, AIESEC is something you should consider. Ever since Jism 2 starring Canadian porn star Sunny Leone is released, there has been a great hue and cry about a porn star’s entry into mainstream Bollywood cinema. What do youngsters feel about the same? Find out.
Not a big deal
Sunny, a bad actress
Nothing new
I don’t think it is a big deal since there is already a lot of skin show in Bollywood now with the Dirty Picture trend still on. I couldn’t catch Jism 2 till now because I have been busy but I am definitely watching the movie soon.
I think porn stars should be banned in Bollywood. Sunny Leone is a very bad actress and I feel like I have wasted my money by watching Jism 2. She should stick to doing what she is good at and not get into acting.
I don’t understand why guys would be interested to pay and watch a chick in clothes when she has already stripped many times before in porn films. For a guy who watches porn, there is nothing new to see about her.

So even watching a movie in a cinema hall can make them feel threatened,” says Dr Praveen Kumar Chintapanti, psychiatrist and director Tranquil Minds. “In patients with claustrophobia, the brain interprets certain things as threats and starts pumping adrenalin triggering a flight in fight response. Typically

WOMEN AND LONGEVITY
Study sheds light on why women outlive men A new study conducted with fruit flies may explain why women live longer than men. TALIA RALPH
A
“mother’s curse” of DNA transfer from mothers to their children may explain why women outlive men, according to a new study published in Current Biology. According to the research, the secret to women’s staying power lies in the energy-generating parts of our cells known as mitochondria, which have their own DNA distinct from the DNA that lives in the center of the cell’s nucleus, according to LiveScience. In virtually every species, this mitochondria DNA is passed down from a mother to her child, without DNA from the father. Because of this handing-off of genes, harmful genetic mutilations may be able to accumulate, including those that cause harm to men but not women, according to the study. Because the natural selection process works only in mothers’ mitochondria, it eliminates mutations that could hurt females, the Independent reported. “If a mitochondrial mutation pops up that is benign in
females, or a mutation pops up that is beneficial to females, this mutation will slip through the gates of natural selection and go through to the next generation,” study researcher Damian Dowling, an evolutionary biologist at Monash University in Australia, told reporters. Dowling and his team conducted a study with fruit flies in which they injected diverse mitochondrial DNA from different strains of fly into a group of fruit flies with the same cellular DNA, according to LiveScience. They then recorded how fast the flies aged and died, and found that the mitochondrial variations influenced the life expectancy in the male flies — the female flies remained unaffected, according to the Telegraph. “Intriguingly, these same mutations have no effects on patterns of ageing in females. They only affect males,” Dowling said, according to MedicalXpress. “All animals possess mitochondria, and the tendency for females to outlive males is common to many different species. Our results therefore suggest that the mitochondrial mutations we have uncovered will generally cause faster male ageing across the animal kingdom.” They dubbed the phenomenon the “Mother’s Curse.” “These findings …offer a new and compelling explanation to one of life’s greatest puzzles — why the female of many species, including humans, live longer than the males,” co-researcher Dr David Clancy of Lancaster University told the Telegraph. Worldwide, there times as many women over the age of 100 than there are men, according to the Telegraph. GLOBAL POST

Deadly fumes to reverse heart disease?
A study is being conducted to use chemicals in vehicle exhaust fumes to open arteries in the heart LONDON: Scientists have hit upon a unique method to open up clogged arteries and reverse heart disease — using toxic chemicals in vehicle exhaust fumes for the purpose. Ian Megson, professor from the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI) and his team are
working on the use of toxic chemicals carbon monoxide and nitric oxide to widen blood vessels and prevent blood clots. Megson said releasing the normally poisonous toxins into the heart in miniscule amounts blocks the body’s ability to clot and relaxes arteries, dilating
them and permitting more blood to flow through. The treatment is hoped to benefit patients suffering from heart attacks and strokes and was developed by fine-tuning machines used to measure car exhaust emissions in garages. The experiments, which aim
to successfully deliver the gases and measure their impact, are being carried out by chemists at St. Andrews University and Megson’s team at the UHI using pig hearts. “It is at a very early stage in development but has huge potential,” added Megson.

Imaginary friend is a passing phase Recently I saw my 5-year-old talk to herself while playing. When Iasked her, she told me it was her friend. While I have heard of many saying that they had an imaginary friend as a kid I am worried about this having a negative impact on her. Is my concern justified or should I just ignore it. A child’s first several years are a time filled with play activities that are an essential part of development. Play contributes to a child’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Play allows children to engage with the world around them and allows them to learn and control different aspects of their environment. They also learn the rules of social groups, norms, sharing and competition through play. Young children often talk to and of their ‘friends’ as a part of play. These imaginary friends are apart of the fantasy world that is a normal part of a child’s development. Fantasy and imaginary characters are an important part. It is through fantasy that we are able to imagine what we want to achieve and for children, it appears to be a normal part of the growing processes. When a child is playing alone, it is not uncommon for him/her to talk to herself as a part of playing. Many children have imaginary friends who last through a significant portion of childhood and gradually disappear from a child’s life as the child grows into school-age. There is no cause for concern, unless it is accompanied by other signs that are troublesome. If a child has no chance to interact with other children because of the living environment, imaginary friends can become the substitute in a child’s fantasy. Additional intervention might be warranted if, when given the opportunity to play with other children, a child refuses and only wants to play with his/her imaginary friends. A child should develop normally and socialise and want to play with other children. As long as there are no other problems and the child has real friends as well, imaginary friends is quite normal and no cause for concern. She’s reportedly in talks with Puri Jagannadh to play one of the lead roles in Allu Arjun’s Iddarammaayilatho. However, we hear that she hasn’t signed yet on the dotted line. Ganesh Babu is going to produce this film which is likely to go on floors in September. In the past, Taapsee has acted with actors like Ravi Teja, Prabhas, Gopichand and Manchu Manoj. If she does join the cast of Iddarammaayilatho, industry insiders say that it might just give her career in Telugu cinema a big push since the film has Puri Jagannadh and Allu Arjun onboard. Currently, Taapsee is part of Chandrasekhar Yeleti’s action adventure, Venkatesh’s Shadow and Ajith’s next action Tamil film. Besides these films, she’s awaiting the release of Gundello Godaari and Chashme Baddoor.

source tells E! News that Jennifer Lopez is “taking some time to think about things” with beau Casper Smart after pictures surfaced that reportedly show the backup dancer ducking into a peep show doorway just a day before J.Lo’s 43rd birthday in NYC. Smart says he was lost and entered the wrong doorway, while his lawyers strongly refuted what they claim were defamatory statements made by tabloids — against which they threatened legal action. Whatever the case may be, a source close to Lopez tells E! News: “She is taking some time to think about things. They are still together. But the photos have shaken her up.” According to the source, Lopez “has never been great at picking men, and this feels all too familiar to her.” “They have not split yet, but it’s fair to say they are cooling off a bit. The pictures have created a distance between them. Even if Casper is telling the truth, and he didn’t mean to walk into the doorway, it just proves how young and immature he is. He should have been more careful, he knows he is often being followed by paparazzi.” So what’s in store for the couple despite what we can only anticipate being an uncomfortable conversation? “Jennifer cares about Casper, they are certainly very close,” says the source. “But he is not the love of her life. She can live without him. If she does decide to split from him, she’ll be ok. She just needs some time to think about whether Casper is worth all this trouble.”

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

In the pubs, in the clubs, in schools – they will talk about Lee Chong Wei’s loss to China’s Lin Dan for a long time to come. The last decade of men’s singles badminton has been a battle between three: Lin Dan, Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat and Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei. The early rivalry between Hidayat and Lin Dan mostly went Hidayat’s way, but once Lin Dan matured as a player, he became the closest one could go to the word ‘unbeatable’. With four World Championships and the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal, Lin Dan is easily the most accomplished badminton player ever. Meanwhile, another rival had sprung up: Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, who started winning Superseries titles consistently. (In badminton, although the Superseries is often likened to the Grand Slams in tennis, it is yet a rung lower in prestige to the World Championships or the Olympics.) As the years progressed, many doubted Chong Wei’s ability to win the really big ones: the World

Championships, the Olympics, or the Asian Games gold medal. It wasn’t a question about talent as much as it was about self-belief. At the Beijing Olympics final, with everybody talking of a dream match between Chong Wei and Lin Dan, the Chinese world champion creamed him in the final. Chong Wei surprisingly won the 2009 All England title beating Lin Dan in the final – but the doubts remained. The
All England is a prestigious title, but the World Championships or the Olympics are something else. At the 2011 World Championships in London, the two booked a final date yet again. The match went into a third game, until Chong Wei had match point at 20-19. He just needed one more point to refute all his critics and prove himself capable of beating the great Lin Dan in a World Championships final. Did Lin Dan suddenly

play better? Did Chong Wei choke? How would we ever know? All we saw was that Lin Dan saved two match points and converted one of his own, to crown himself champion yet again. Chong Wei looked destroyed. We thought he’d never recover from that blow. But there he was on Sunday, 5th August, playing the Olympics final for the second straight time. Lin Dan again. Could Chong Wei do it? He won the first game easily. Lin Dan fought back to take the second. It was neckand-neck until the end, and Chong Wei suddenly had the advantage at 19-18. It was his big moment. One more point and he was one step away from claiming the gold. And yet... off a high clear to the baseline, Chong Wei suddenly decided to let the shuttle drop, hoping perhaps that it would fall out. It didn’t. Lin Dan took the next two points and ran all around the arena. He’d done it yet again. Two Olympic gold medals. They will call him the Greatest of All Time from now on. And poor Chong Wei, left to contemplate on what might have been. He’ll have to live with this for the rest of his life.

set a new snatch world record of 151kg as she missed out on gold by just one kilo. Hripsime Khurshudyan of Armenia claimed bronze with a total lift of 294kg.
The competition boiled down to a straight shoot-out between Zhou and the woman she deposed as world champion last year, Kashirina. The Russian drew first blood as she twice improved on her own world record in the snatch, taking it from 148kg to 151kg. She lifted 5kg more than Zhou in that section, meaning the Chinese athlete needed to pull something out of the bag in the clean and jerk in order to claim gold. And as she weighs almost 30kg more than Kashirina, she needed to surpass the Russian’s total rather than match it as doing so would have seen her lose out on bodyweight.

This medal happens to be the 24year-old’s second medal at the 2012 London Games and his fifth medal overall, the highest by any Chinese gymnast LONDON: China’s Zou Kai claimed his fifth Olympic gold medal on Sunday, while Great Britain proved their emergence as a force in world gymnastics by supplying two of the medallists in the pommel horse final. Zou’s successful defence of his men’s floor title gave the 24-year-old his second gold medal of the London Games and his fifth overall, which is more than any other Chinese gymnast. “This medal means a lot to me,” said Zou, whose floor routine was awarded a winning score of 15.933 points. “It’s my fifth Olympic gold medal and I’ve won the

“Although I wasn’t able to get gold today, I think I did really well, so I am satisfied,” said Uchimura, who was crowned individual allaround champion on Wednesday. In the pommel horse final, Hungary’s Krisztian Berki took the title by the slimmest of margins to prevent Louis Smith from claiming Britain’s first ever artistic gymnastics gold medal. Berki and Smith finished on the same score — 16.066 points — but reigning world champion Berki was awarded the gold medal as his execution score of 9.166 was 0.100 points higher than that of Smith’s. JOHN WEAVER LONDON: Ethiopia’s Tiki Gelana won gold in the women’s marathon on the streets of London on Sunday, denying the powerful Kenyans their first Olympic crown in a Games record time of 2hr 23min 7sec. Priscah Jeptoo, part of a Kenyan contingent eyeing a medals sweep after last year’s one-two-three at the world championships in South Korea, took the nation’s third consecutive silver in the event, five sec-
onds behind Gelana. Russia’s Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova collected the bronze in 2:23:29. Gelana, who ran the second fastest time of 2012 in this year’s Rotterdam marathon, took charge of the race in the closing stages and 2011 world silver medallist Jeptoo did not have the strength to match her. The fancied Mary Keitany, who has won the past two London marathons, was long part of the leading pack but slipped off the pace shortly before the 41-kilometre mark as the rain came down.

LONDON: Kenyan Ezekiel Kemboi won the men’s Olympic 3000m steeplechase for the second time on Sunday, showing great mental strength to put aside the pressure of a court case he faces back home. The 30-year-old — who faces trial for allegedly stabbing a woman earlier this year — timed 8min 18.56sec to finish ahead of France’s

Usain Bolt, the world record holder turned on the after-burners at 60m to clock an Olympic record of 9.63sec, the second fastest time in history. LUKE PHILLIPS Agencie France-Presse LONDON: Jamaica’s Usain Bolt sealed his status as the greatest sprinter of all time after retaining the men’s Olympic 100m title with an electrifying display on Sunday. The world record holder turned on the after-burners at 60m to clock an Olympic record of 9.63sec, the second fastest time in history. Bolt banished the doubts that had surrounded him in the build-up to the Olympics after he was beaten by training partner
Yohan Blake in the Jamaican trials, but the young pretender was left trailing two metres behind. American 2004 Olympic gold medallist Justin Gatlin completed his remarkable comeback from a four-year doping ban by taking the bronze medal in a personal best of 9.79sec. Bolt revealed afterwards that his false start in last year’s world had been worrying him before the race, but his coach Glen Mills put him straight. “My coach told me ‘stop worrying about the start, the best part of your race is at the end,” he said.

‘80,000 of you; 8 men; 9 seconds; 100 metres’ Seats for the final were reportedly being sold for several thousand pounds. ROBIN MILLARD Agencie France-Presse LONDON: The hottest ticket of the London Games — seats for Sunday’s final were reportedly changing hands on the black market for several thousand pounds — had been billed as potentially the fastest race in history. “The time has come,” the
crowd were told, to a giant roar. “80,000 of you; eight men; nine seconds; the men’s 100 metres final!” The Olympic Stadium, designed with a temporary upper tier, has been criticised by some for being plain and featureless. But a stadium filled with 80,000 people and nothing else but the fastest men on the planet makes for hell of an atmosphere.
Then the quiet was shattered by a explosion of sound and light, with a deafening ring of cheers, shouts and screams. Bolt puffed out his cheeks, looked dead ahead, and by the time he had glanced a few times to his left, he was dipping for the line and breaking his Olympic record. Four years after dazzling the world in Beijing, ‘Lightning’ had struck twice.
LONDON: American Sanya Richards-Ross won the women’s 400m Olympic title on Sunday in a time of 49.55sec to end a 28-year gold drought in the event for the United States. Defending champion Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain finished second in 49.70sec while DeeDee Trotter of the United States took bronze in 49.72sec. Richards-Ross, 27, became the first American to win the Olympic title since Valerie Brisco-Hooks in Los Angeles in 1984 and will
attempt to emulate her when she tries to add 200 metres gold later in the Games. “This win is impossible to describe,” said Richards-Ross, who has the chance of leaving with three golds as she will also go in the 4x400m relay. Five years ago she almost had to retire because of a mystery illness initially diagnosed as Behcets syndrome but which a new doctor believes is a skin disease. Ohuruogu, also world champion in 2007, was distraught because of the race she had run, although she graciously did a lap of honour.

The 30year-old recorded a winning mark of 80.59m, beating defending champion Primoz Kozmus, who threw a season’s best of 79.36m, while Japan’s Koji Murofushi took bronze.
LONDON: Kazakhstan’s Olga Rypakova won Olympic gold in the women’s triple jump on Sunday. The 27-year-old world indoor champion leaped a season’s best of 14.98 metres. Colombian Caterina Ibarguen claimed silver with 14.80m, with Ukraine’s current world champion Olha Salduha taking bronze with 14.79m.

SOUTH AFRICA IN ENGLAND
RENO-TAHOE OPEN
Rain plays spoilsport
Matt Prior said the positive side of the lost playing time was that it meant there were only two possible results — a draw or an England win. COLIN BRYDEN Agencie France-Presse LEEDS: England’s hopes of squaring their Test series against South Africa flickered briefly before heavy rain brought an early end to the fourth day of the second Test at Headingley on Sunday. A fluent innings of 68 by Matt Prior (right) gave England a six-run first innings lead with the hope of bowling out an injury-hit South African team cheaply in a second innings which started shortly before lunch. But opening batsmen Graeme Smith and Jacques Rudolph resisted some hostile bowling before a mid-afternoon thunderstorm - the second rain stoppage of the day - ended play with South Africa on 39 for no wicket, a lead of 33. “It’s very frustrating,” said Prior. “To get a small lead and put South Africa under a bit of pressure, it would have been nice to have had the opportunity to bowl all day at them and pick up a few wickets going into the last day.” Prior said the positive side of the lost playing time was that it meant there were only two possible results - a draw or an England win. “For them to know they have to bat out a day can sometimes be quite tough. We’ve got nothing to lose, we have to come very hard tomorrow morning. It’ll take a bit of luck and a lot of
skill, but who knows?” Smith was one of three of South Africa’s regular top four batsmen carrying an injury. He had to be helped off the field on Saturday after falling heavily on his left knee. But he led his side onto the field with the knee heavily strapped and when he batted he did not appear to be hampered in his running between the wickets. Rudolph opened the batting with Smith in place of first innings century maker
West Indies wrap up series 2-0 KINGSTON, JAMAICA:
West Indies won the second Test on Sunday to wrap up a 2-0 series win over New Zealand, beating the Black Caps in Kingston by five wickets. The hosts reached 206 for five having started the day just 71 runs short of victory, as Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit the winning run to add to last month’s nine-wicket success at North Sound.
Alviro Petersen, who did not field because of a hamstring injury and will be unable to bat until five wickets have fallen. South Africa suffered a further injury blow when allrounder Jacques Kallis could not take the field on Sunday because of back spasms. South African team manager Dr Mohamed Moosajee said Kallis was the major concern. “Jacques has a an issue with lower back spasms. His back will seize.”

it worked well and I’m happy I won,” said Dolgopolov. “I needed to show my best game. “I had to attack and make winners against Tommy. It was a tight match, especially in the opening set with the weather coming in. “I had to play well in the important moments and ignore the conditions,” added the Ukrainian who hammered 11 aces. Dolgopolov needed two-
and-a-quarter hours on court to secure his final victory in the tough conditions. Haas struck nine aces but also produced 11 double-faults — his last as he dropped to 5-1 down in the final set. Haas, ranked 36th in the world, was bidding for his second trophy this season after beating Roger Federer for the Halle title on grass two months ago.
Henry beats Rocha in Reno
Henry finished with 43 points in the Stableford scoring system RENO, NEVADA: American JJ Henry posted seven points in the fourth round to win the PGA Tour’s $3 million Reno-Tahoe Open by one point over Brazil’s Alexandre Rocha. Henry finished with 43 points in the Stableford scoring system which awards eight points for double eagles, five for eagles, two for birdies, zero for pars. One point is subtracted for bogeys and three points deducted for double-bogey or worse. Henry led going into the final round and then hung on for his second USPGA Tour title. Brazil’s Alexandre Rocha carded three birdies in the last six holes to close the gap at the Montreaux Golf and Country Club. He earned nine points on Sunday to end with 42. Argentina’s Andres Romero finished third with 37 points after scoring a half dozen points in the final round. American John Mallinger had two points Sunday to finish by himself in fourth with 34.

Bradley scrapes to win in Ohio
AKRON, OHIO: Keegan Bradley saved par on the final hole by pouring in a 15-foot putt to claim the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Sunday, denying Jim Furyk the first wire-to-wire victory of his career. Bradley rallied with a final round six-under 64 Sunday to finish at 13-under 267 and win by one stroke over Furyk and Steve Stricker. “I still can’t believe it,” Bradley said. “I am just so thrilled.” It was the first win for Bradley since capturing the 2011 PGA Championship and he now heads to Kiawah Island, South Carolina to try to defend that title next week. Jim Furyk led the tournament for 71 holes before suffering a meltdown on the par-four No. 18 where he shot a double bogey.
