ey!!! Want To Become A Gigolo?’ ‘Want To Earn Good Money By Giving Hot Services To Our Female Clients (Indian And Foreign Clients). We Provide Males To Elite Class Females To Serve Them... Earnings Vary From `10,000 To `20,000 Per Stand... Contact… Phone number….’ Such Net ads are aplenty in Hyderabad among other cities. The advertisers say that they have metro-networks where your services can be exchanged. These are independent players but there is another set of ‘resident service’ centred around beauty/ skin parlours of Hyderabad. They work discretely, very protected and are urban-bred. Most
of them are labeled as male escorts. The word gigolo is not used in their circles. Anyone who is not uncouth, uneducated and is in conformity with the international standards of behaviour can become a well-paid gigolo. Gigolos are rated according to their looks and performance. A top-class one earns about `4,000 per customer. They are booked through mobile phones only. After booking, the youth will appear before the would-be hirer and she should approve him. If the rate is `4,000 the hirer has to pay `8,000 because half of the earning goes to the one who patronises them. One good looking youth, whom Postnoon traced with difficulty,
told Postnoon that he is from Delhi and his age is 23 years. However, he looked at least 30 years old. He has been working for the past four years and he has been with women between 30 to 45 years of age. “I have earned well but the threat of skin disease is a perpetual worry,” he said Those in the know of things said on a condition of anonymity that a gigolo is not called at a
short notice. He is given 24 hours to get prepared. Once a youth proves popular with the hirer, he can look forward to a generous tip and future work too, they said. Business ethics and sensitive nature of the network do not allow to reveal who the gigolos are as the name of each one is fictitious. There are nicknames too, such as ‘Tiger’, ‘Superman’ ‘King’ — all earned through their proficiency in keeping their hirers happy. Under no circumstance would one know the identity of the hirer. “It’s strictly prohibited,” said one advertiser when contacted on phone. But they drop a hint of their social status — rich, liberal and whose husbands too have liberal values. Rich girls too demand the service of good chaps though more are the married rich. Most of the City-based
gigolos do not go out but work around the posh areas. But police sources dropped a hint that unlike the high-society gigolos, there are some males who offer themselves for sex on the streets. They are unprotected and are out for an adventure and luck. They stand at various vantage points as if waiting for some friend. Women who need their services come in cars and pick them up. When contacted Police Commissioner, AK Khan said the police are aware of it and they are told to keep a watch on them and try to nab whenever they could lay a hand on them. Khan added that in the past, the police had found male masseurs but not gigolos because they are not easily identifiable and are difficult to bring to book.

New mayor’s day 1, a damp squib
Md Inkeshaf ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

t’s one thing to be the rabble-rouser and quite another to make the system work. This is what the new young mayor Mohd Majid Hussain learnt on his first day as the mayor of Hyderabad. The mayor was given a red carpet welcome by officials. It was past 3 pm when he entered the mayoral chamber with party MLA Ahmed Pasha Qadri and floor leader Nazeer Ahmed, followed by other corporators and supporters. After fulfilling the formalities, he met GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu. Then it was an avalanche of corporators who were vying with one another to greet him. Later, Aminulhassan Jaffri, MLC, took him to the anteroom. The mayor, fresh and prim but tense, began to attend to things. Meanwhile, the clamour of the media for his maiden interview grew louder. The media had many questions but Majid Hussain was not quite prepared. His advisors suggested that the media meet should be kept after the mayor had
assessed the City’s fundamentals and needs. The mayor appeared eager to hold meetings with officials before he spoke to the media or anyone else. One newsman shot back saying that how could he say that he needs time to understand the needs of the City, when he is a corporator and a native of Hyderabad? Majid then spoke about his priorities. The media wanted to know what he thought was the reason for nominating such a young man for the mayoral office? He attributed his position to party chief Asaduddin Owaisi. Later, GHMC additional commissioners Shiva Parvathi, Aleem Basha, Sai Krishna and other senior officials of the corporation also congratulated the mayor on assuming charge.

he New Year’s resolution of pro-Telangana agitators — to achieve a separate State or keep up the agitation — has thrust the City’s academic world into the throes of uncertainty and anguish yet again. TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao’s announcement that a fresh Telangana stir will begin on January 17 and “would be the mother of all agitations” has academic circles buzzing with anxiety. Students in Hyderabad have already lost 45 days of learning in the latter half of 2011. Students had to give up their holidays; teachers had to work extra hours and parents underwent the agony of a Sakala Janula Samme (general strike) in October. The dates for the agitation have been tentatively set for after the Sankranti holidays. “We don’t know what to do. We did not give our children Christmas holidays and even reduced the Sankranti holidays from 10 to 5 days. All this is

the exams and a renewed agitation is a cause of worry. Now the Board will meet and comprehend the seriousness of the agitation. We have to plan and come up with ideas so students don’t sit at home and waste time,” said Nithin, director, Keshav Memorial Institute of Technology. Greater Hyderabad School Associations plans to meet the CM to get him to ask the TRS leaders to exempt educational institutions from the stir. “We will not let this happen. We will take all precautions and make sure schools function during the agitation. We will arrange special buses and police protection for schools,” said SS Liyagat, President, Great Hyderabad School Associations. However, students at Osmania University, who have been at the forefront of the T-stir, will abstain from participating for the first 10 days because of their exams. OU, which put in a sterling performance in campus recruitment last year, is wise enough to keep their academic performance ahead, before getting into the agitation arena.

very parent yearns to have his/her ward admitted to the best preschool so that the kid gets ready to take off well in the primary class. Hundreds of preschools, branded and unbranded, are taking root in the City close to residential areas. He was taken in for a shock last evening when he got a reply, which stated that most of the preschools had not taken permission Representational pic from the government and there existed no authority to regulate them. “When I noticed the number of preschools that are coming up in the City, I filed the petition to find out about the facilities provided and permissions taken. The earnings from the kite and idol making are no match to what we get from the liquor but then it is the question of atonement that sustains us to suffer the loss and continue with the sin after the festival period ends,” she says rather philosophically. CRIME e it brewing gudumba (country-made illicit liquor) or carving Ganesha idols; Dhoolpet epitomises the best and the worst of the City. These residents’ nimble fingers are busy once again, but this time around there is not a hooch vat in sight. The round-the-clock breweries that produce gudumba and constantlyrubbed ganja have come to a halt. Now the ‘artisans’ are busy making manja and kites for the Sankranti festival. In addition to making kites, many have already commenced making Ganesha idols. Dhoolpet in Old City is known for its gudumba-ganja cartel but its denizens believe that the place is cleansed of its ‘sins’ by the creation of Ganeshas that are made in abundance for Vinayaka Chaturthi every year. The place springs to life and buzzes with activity every year during festival time. The elephant-god seems to enliven the by lanes here. Sita Bai’s family, who has been brewing liquor for the last two decades, from January up to Ganesh Chaturthi keeps herself and her family busy making kites and idols. In a day, a five-member group makes around 500 to 600 kites that are sold to wholesalers. “There is no fear in the [liquor] trade we practise, as Ganesha takes care of us for the prayaschit we do by keeping ourselves clean and away from brewing liquor during

RSS, Digvijay trade barbs over photo NEW DELHI: The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) and Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Thursday traded barbs over a photograph showing him sharing the dais with RSS leaders. While the RSS accused Singh of practicing ‘vote-bank and communal’ politics, the Congress general secretary hit back, saying that the Sangh should explain whether it had ever praised him like they had praised Anna Hazare in their recently published book. “The recent expose of this photograph is a reaffirmation of the communal politics that the Congress has been indulging in since the beginning,” RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav told reporters. Digvijay Singh, however, thanked the RSS and BJP for doing their research. IANS

BJP draws RSS ire, Congress flak on Kushwaha induction NEW
DELHI:
Divisions appeared in the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday with opposition within the ranks as well as from the allies to the induction of a scam-accused former Uttar Pradesh minister even as the Congress sharpened its attack, questioning the purpose of party veteran LK Advani’s anti-corruption 'rath yatra'. Party leaders, including party chief Nitin Gadkari, maintained a studied silence on the issue. The strongest attack on the BJP came from its mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which urged the people of
Uttar Pradesh not to vote for party-hoppers and tainted people. While RSS mouthpiece Panchajanya snubbed the saffron party for inducting Babu Ram Kushwaha, spokesperson Ram Madhav said that the BJP should not ignore the issue of tainted candidates. Saffron-clad BJP MP, Yogi Adityanath, feared the party could face the consequences at the hustings in February. "The corrupt leaders in Mayawati's and Mulayam Singh Yadav's parties are being taken in the BJP keeping in mind UP Assembly elections. This could prove to be harmful

for the party," Adityanath, the MP from Gorakhpur said. The BJP’s central leadership evaded questions on the issue. Party leader Arun Jaitley refused to answer any questions when asked about Kushwaha as he came out after meeting President Pratibha Patil on the Lokpal Bill. Gadkari, who was in Jhansi to address an election rally in the heart of the Bundelkhand region, not only shunned even a passing reference to Kushwaha, who until Wednesday was described by the party leaders as "a prominent OBC leader from Bundelkhand," but also parried
queries by mediapersons on the issue. Meanwhile, Janata DalUnited leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that his party was against “inducting tainted leaders.” The Congress continued its attack on the BJP with regard to this issue. Taking a dig at the party, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said that the BJP was like the River Ganga and corrupt people could be purified by sending them to the party. "If BJP is like Ganga, what is the need for Jan Lokpal. Send all corrupt people to BJP," he said. IANS

Emergency row: Advani takes on PM NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party veteran LK Advani on Thursday took a jibe at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying that he had recently missed an opportunity to distance himself from the atrocities inflicted on the media during the 1975-77 Emergency. Both Manmohan Singh and Advani were present at a function earlier this week for the birth centenary of Puran Chandra Gupta, the founder of Dainik Jagran. The PM released a book and a stamp on Gupta, who was jailed during the Emergency. “I do not know if the PM has glanced through this book, or if anyone has told him that the Jagran editors were arrested as they had firmly opposed the Emergency,” Advani said in his latest blog entry. “Had he been briefed he would have done a signal service to democracy. By omitting to do so, he has missed an opportunity to distance himself from the worst assault on press freedom in the history of independent India,” he added. IANS
Will provide safety to Indians: China NEW DELHI: China today promised to provide adequate safety to Indians on its soil and said that the recent incidents in Yiwu will not be allowed to influence age-old friendly ties between the two countries. Giving this assurance to BJP MP Tarun Vijay, Chinese Ambassador to India Zhang Yan promised his best efforts to send back home the two traders who were recently attacked by locals in Yiwu city. “We are working to improve relations. India and China are engines to the world economy and our horizons of cooperation are too big. We will not allow such kind of incidents to influence our age-old civilisational ties”, a release from the BJP MP, who is also a spokesperson of the party, said quoting Yan. Observing that such incidents vitiate the atmosphere and discourage Indians from visiting China, Vijay suggested that the Chinese government should think about setting up special India-China friendship help centres in major cities there for people in distress. The Ambassador said that this was a very constructive suggestion and he would forward it to his government for consideration. PTI

The main objective is to make sure that all those technically interested people to get together at one place and to share their knowledge and encourage youngsters to talk about the future of the industry and what is in store for them. Which are the big names from the fabless semiconductor industry taking part in the fiveday conference? Intel, AMD, Qualcom, Xylinx, Mentor Graphics, and Magma are among the big names and startups liked SocTronics are also taking part. Some of them are sponsors for the programme. They are investing money to promote the event and
Silver Jubilee conference on VLSI technology begins
Dasarath Gude knowledge sharing. Some are showcasing their products. How many papers have come? Any special project that came from students that gets highlighted in the conference? As many as 170 technical papers have been selected as of now. In all, over 1,000 papers were submitted. This is an encouraging trend. The papers came from all over the world. We do have some local papers. There are 48 papers from students. This is the first time we opened up a contest for student papers. We zeroed in on six of them and one would be the finalist which brings recognition.
Do the projects submitted in student forum translate from lab to land and is there any handholding done? There is no handholding from the industry side. Maybe, institutions would do so. They must work with some professors. Some of them are good ideas. But we have to see how could they be productised. About 15,000 professionals work in different companies on VLSI technology in the country. Do you foresee any investment coming into Hyderabad either from exiting players and/or new players after the conference?
The exiting players are scaling up. Presently from a revenue point of view, the industry size in the City is Rs. 400 crore to Rs 500 crore. Every year, it is being ramped up. Some new players are coming too. A couple of companies were started and the minimum investment is not less than $ 15 million to begin with. How is the industry planning to prepare the students industryready and enhance their employability skills? Still it is a concern. Training is a serious concern. Veda IIT is helping the students to hone their skills on VLSI. Engineering colleges introduced the subjects. Still there is a long way for them to go to make their students industry ready. We work with Vasavi, Government Polytechnic, and GIOE, as their managements are very aggressive. What is the positioning in India? A lot of projects are coming and there is a demand. There is a lack of good skillsets. In terms of design, we are no 4 globally — US, China, Taiwan and India in that order. China overtook us. There is a lot of push from the Government of India. Anurag (Advanced Numerical Research and Analysus Group) of defence research Development Organisation in the City is a large VLSI project.

Editorials CHINA’ S GROWTH comes with a price
I
n a tone that reeked of sheepish admiration, the Prime Minister sang paeans to the impressive growth China had clocked in science and how India was lagging. However, the Chinese tale of success has come at a price, which we cannot afford to pay. Be it the mega dams or the massive industrial estates, millions of people have had their land and livelihood snatched away from them. Protesters have been arrested, tortured and tens of thousands are being detained in labour camps under inhuman conditions. We have our share of blood in the form of dams and forcible acquisition of farm land. If we want to soar above the dragon we need to chart a course that is compatible with our social, economic and political systems. The visual splendour of the dragon’s fiery breath may be breathtaking but the trail of destruction it leaves is equally unpalatable.

he firebrand leader who stormed the Marxist citadel of West Bengal in the 2011 Assembly elections has always been in the news. Didi, as she is popularly known, is loved for her antics and theatrics. Her grand conspiracy theories blaming the Marxists for everything from law and order problems to building fires and the witty anecdotes during speeches have brought down the House with laughter. Moody as a cat, friendly as a sister and fierce like a tigress, the lady is here to stay — and entertainment is guaranteed.
hy are they all keen on bringing an elevated Metro rail in every Indian city? Why doesn’t the government of the day make a cost analysis and put it before the public? There are scores of questions in the minds of simple citizens who have no devious agenda. And, these simpletons do not know how the politico-bureaucratic axis works. Poor them! Overhead Metro rail is branded unviable and unnecessary world over. The reasons are: the overgrown cities of today have little leeway left for giving space for a massive rail project. Consider the following. n It displaces and wrest precious livelihood of lakhs of people en route n It defaces the cityscape and kills dozens of heritage wealth n It can’t recover the cost even three generations after it is built n In a rocky terrain like Hyderabad, the metro railroad project is a Herculean job The rationale of an elevated Metro in other cities is that it proved an average success in Delhi. And, they all take the fair name of the engineer marvel, E Sreedharan, to justify rails in other cities. Only he knows he did nothing of the sort. Even in Delhi’s instance, let us remember that the Metro built for 3 million passengers per day finally carries only 1 million in spite of cancelling nearly 100 bus routes on the journey. This has led to the displacement of more than 200,000 people but only 50,000 have been rehabilitated. If we see in totality, it is easy to see that the elevated Metro is desirable if a city is being planned. Cities in Europe built Metros in the 20th century because they had centralised business districts. Do we? The cost estimates have escalated over the years with poor revenue collection. All in all the hurried planning of the metro system leaves a lot to be desired. Rather, subway or underground railway system could be far more ideal for crowded Indian cities. But, the HMRL Hyderabad general manager Vishnuvardhan Reddy says the cost of the overhead metro, `14132 crore
Kohli’s infamous tantrum at Sydney
There’s a way to stop load shedding
What Virat Kohli did at Sydney brings to memory another infamous sports incident. That of French footballer Zinedine Zidane, who was shown the red card for headbutting Italy’s Materazzi. Zidane too, refused to apologise saying that he was provoked. While it is understandable that they had their reasons for their outbursts, they must know that they are ambassadors of sports and must be able to stay under control. Had Kohli not reacted and brought to the umpire’s notice the heckling, he would have been the winner. Parthasarthy, Bhoiguda
Stealing power is a shame no doubt. But the bigger shame is the fact that the electricity department is not able to curb the menace. What improvement have we made in the field of technology if we are not able to detect and stop theft of electricity? It has to be done at all costs and soon. Because as a quick calculation will reveal, the amount of electricity lost to such robbers is more than what is saved by the department through load shedding. And this means that if this nuisance is stopped, we do not have to suffer darkness. Mohd Yousuf, Khairatabad

would go up by three times if it is laid underground. Besides, Hyderabad being a rocky region, it is not easy to build a subway, and there are “terror threats” to consider. But, throughout the world underground rail is preferred over the overhead one and they haven’t negotiated a special terrorist threat. Urban planners say that the City rail, if to succeed, must be planned along with other modes of transport so that each one feeds the other. Or else, building a few kilometers of elevated rail on an overflowing city is like conducting a plastic surgery on a centurian for wrinkles! Here, perhaps, we could see something in what JAC leader Sayanna of Krishna Nagar says, “As per the earlier proposal the corridorIII was to pass through Begumpet, Punjagutta, Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills.

But the route was changed to save the properties of bigwigs in these areas.” So, they say, land is the issue, and that is where the catch lies. So the lesser mortals of the crowded core city are asked to bear the burden. And, hundreds of small traders are crying hoarse to stop demolishing their lives and livelihood. Does anybody care?
Tail Piece How much the HMRL cares for the public it swears to serve could be realised from the fact that three years after the HMRA came into being, its website’s FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) portfolio remains blank! Why? As a wag said, “There are too many questions and they have no answers, that’s why.”
Police must prevent traffic violations
Sexual abuse is going unchecked
What is the traffic department up to? Are they out to reduce traffic violation, or are they monitoring violation? No wonder traffic on our roads is so bad. If all resources of these uniformed men are directed only at collecting fines from violators, this is to be expected. It would do conditions on our roads a world of good if instead of catching culprits after they have committed an offence, they are prevented. The sight of a policeman will keep a check on an errant driver more than the knowledge of a hidden camera. Vivek K, Narayanguda
One has become numb after reading so many stories of unchecked sexual abuse that are taking place in our educational institutions. The students are at a disadvantage as they are dependent on teachers for internal marks. So there is pressure on them to keep mum on unacceptable behaviour. The government must open more helplines and counselling facilities where youngsters can seek redress. And the authorities should ensure that an airtight case is built against the abusers and hand exemplary punishment. RK Sadhu, Krishna Nagar

Child bright, Eat right! “Child hunger and child obesity are really just two sides of the same coin. others are always worried about their children’s nutrition. “How do we get them to eat, are they eating enough, are they eating too much?” is something they all lament.
What’s right? Dr Charita Adikane, chief dietician, Apollo Hospital, Secunderabad says, “Children should have a balanced diet and avoid junk food.”
Tutti-Fruity Muesli n 1/2 cup plain yogurt,
non fat or low-fat n 1/2 cup blueberries,
fresh or frozen n 1/4 cup apple, diced n 1/4 cup banana, diced n 1/4 cup muesli ,
unsweetened n 1 teaspoon honey n Stir together yogurt,
blueberries, apple, banana, muesli, and honey (or maple syrup) to taste in a bowl. Simple and quick!
According to Ali Faraz, a fitness consultant, “You should focus on natural food. Eggs, fresh fruits, milk, vegetables and legumes are suggested. Roti is considered a better option than rice as rice contains sugar. Roti on the other hand contains fibre which helps control the absorption of carbohydrates in the body. Most Indian food is multi-grain such as jowar roti, natural aata, idly etc which is good for the health,” he adds.
All that sweet “Nowadays foods like chocolates and colas are being marketed for children which should not be the case. Children should avoid these products,” Ali Faraz believes. So what can be an alternative? He suggests using honey as a good alternative to sugar and states that artificial sweeteners should be avoided as they contain aspartame that is harmful for the body. If children eat a lot of fruits and vegetables they will not want to eat more sugar as they are already full, he adds. “Children can be given healthy desserts such as fruit custard instead of maybe chocolates and other junk food,” adds Dr Charita.
Fussy children Children can be a fussy lot and making sure they eat well and eat right is something that gives many a mothers sleepless nights. Is there no way
to make children enjoy their food without making the food junk or unhealthy? Growing children have various nutritional needs. For their development needs it is important that the food is structured in the right way. Ali Faraz suggests fruit smoothies and yogurt and fruits as a good way to make children eat fruits. For a healthy breakfast Ali Faraz suggests muesli. “Muesli basically contains oats and nuts which are good for your health, as it is sweet children will enjoy eating it,” he says. Adding various cut fruits makes it tasty as well as helps children eat their share of fruits. Food can be made interesting by presenting them in a different way like spinach can be given in the form of Palak poori and paratha mentions Dr Charita. For a healthy lunch option Dr Charita suggests Soya pulao with vegetables. “It provides all the required nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins and fibre.”
Restrict TV viewing for kids, especially at meal times
Dr Kiran Krishnamurti
Eat well, play well and sleep well
A good night’s sleep helps make children healthy and energetic. According to Ali Faraz many parents come to him to enquire about how their kids can lose weight. This according to him is wrong, he believes that, “It is important that children eat well and get their proper nine hours of sleep.” Dr Charita believes that children should engage in a lot of outdoor activities. “Today’s children prefer to stay indoors in front of the TV. Because of this they lose track of everything else. If they engage in physical activity it also helps increase their appetite.” Finally, as Dr Charita adds that while the child is eating the TV should be switched off and the whole family should eat together as it encourages the children to eat.
I have 2 children, a boy of 8 years and a daughter who is 6 years old. I find that they have both become television addicts and throw huge tantrums if I try to discipline them. They refuse to eat dinner at the table without the television. How much TV is permissible and acceptable? Would it be better to have them use the computer? This is a common problem in almost every household. I am not entirely anti-television and in fact some channels can be quite interesting, educative and thought provoking. However, many programmes that children are allowed to watch, whether TV soaps or cartoon channels, show a lot of violence and aggression besides trivialising sex and relationships. The bombardment by advertorials does distort a child’s perception of reality and promotes consumerism. We need to be especially aware of this and take adequate measures to negate these effects. Restrict the viewing of TV to a maximum of one hour during school days and may be a little more during holidays. You should encourage the development of a hobby or a sport from a young age and reading too should be made compulsory. TV watching can be a reward after these have been completed for the day. Please monitor what your child is watching very carefully. And no, do not replace the TV with the computer. Definitely not at this age. The computer has its own evils which they don’t need to be exposed at this young age.

Day at coughice? How to avoid germ warfare Sitting opposite are two of your work colleagues. Normally perfectly pleasant, recently they have turned into the snot monsters from hell, wantonly spreading their germs by projectile coughing in your direction, managing over the course of two days to use an entire box of Kleenex, now scattered all over the floor. Then one asks to borrow your phone... Once you manage to escape this germ warfare, the IT guy, covered in cold sores, comes to help you with an email issue. Then there’s the canteen staff to contend with — you’ve never seen mucous like it. Worse still, even if you survive the microbial death trap that is the office, it doesn’t make you immune to a crowded party afterwards or the journey home. Being squashed together in a packed bus with the disease-ridden public will guarantee you won’t escape uninfected this winter. Yes, it’s that time of year when coughs and colds abound. Most are caused by viruses.
There are more than 200 different types that can cause the common cold, so over the course of a lifetime you can expect to encounter them on a regular basis. Coughs and colds occur more frequently in the colder seasons for several reasons. Falling temperatures mean we tend to stay indoors more, often in enclosed and busy places where conditions for the transmission of infectious microbes are optimal. At these times of year, the mucous membrane in the nose can get dry, losing many of the protective properties that would normally stop microbes from entering the respiratory tract. The drying effect of cold weather can also cause damage to the mucosal cells, again facilitating the entry of viruses. Interestingly, cold viruses are also more stable in cooler, dry climates. The protective envelope that encapsulates them is
stronger at colder temperatures. When the weather warms up, this protein shell is more prone to “melting” and damage. What is not true, however, is that the human immune system will somehow get weaker once the weather gets colder. Research has not found any difference in immune function at high or low temperatures, though it is possible to catch a different strain of virus straight after getting over a previous one, which is often the reason why people claim their immune system is weaker. While most coughs clear up within days, around 20 per cent become chronic and some can persist for years. It does seem that at the moment there are several viruses around that follow this more chronic pattern. As a general rule, your doctor should properly investigate any cough lasting longer than eight weeks. Meanwhile, there are other causes of chronic cough besides viruses. Post-nasal drip can cause an irritating, tickly or dry cough with a sensation of mucus dripping down the throat. It may last for years and cause the throat to become sore and swollen. Overactivity of the mucous glands that line the nose and sinuses is the cause, often stimulated by allergies or viruses. A pollution cough is also a real possibility. Usually characterised by a constant phlegmy cough that is often worse in the early morning, it can be much more noticeable in winter. Some coughs are not really lung-related at all. One in 10 people experience acid reflux at some point in their lives, which irritates the sensitive lining of the oesophagus and

the back of the throat, causing the typical loud, harsh cough. The main cause for the majority of our coughs, however, is the common cold virus. It is easily spread and difficult to avoid. Dramatic gestures such as wearing a face mask are unlikely to help much as most people pick up infections from contaminated surfaces. Scrupulous hand hygiene is probably the most effective way of reducing your chances of getting sick. Something we would do well to get over is our foolish attitude to being ill. If you are sick, stay at home. Struggling into work when you are ill is not valiant and dedicated, it is foolish and will only prolong your own illness and virtually guarantee that colleagues will catch your virus too. Medical science has been of virtually no help when it comes to treating the cold bug. Many people swear by their own remedies, but no conclusive data has shown that large doses of vitamin C prevent colds, though it may reduce the severity or duration of symptoms. And the jury is still out on zinc - as many studies have shown it is effective as have shown that it is not. The best way of helping to suppress a troublesome cough, particularly at night, is to take medicines containing the painkiller codeine, which suppresses the cough reflex in the brain - but, of course, only do so under your doctor’s supervision. Tips for healthy skin
A
healthy skin is something we all vie for. Five simple tips for skincare are mentioned. n Protect yourself from sun One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. Sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems and increase the risk of skin cancer. For sun protection one must use sunscreen,
stay in shade as far as possible and wear protective clothing. n Don’t smoke Smoking is not only injurious for your body but also your skin. Smoking is said to narrow the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients. Smoking is also said to effect collagen and elastin
— the fibres that give your skin its strength and elasticity. n Treat your skin with care The skin must be handled with care. One must take care to limit bath time and avoid hot baths as they remove the skin’s oil. Strong soaps should be avoided and care should be taken while shaving. After a wash, skin should be pat dried and moisturised.

n Eat a healthy diet
Eat well is something everyone tells you. It is important to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. n Manage your stress Stress can make your skin sensitive and result in acne and other problems. For healthy skin you should be in a healthy state of mind. Source: www.mayoclinic.com
We use parboiled rice for my lunch and dinner, and also use parboiled rice in the preparation of idly and dosa at home. I am not sure whether it is good for health or not, I want to know more about parboiled rice. Parboiled rice is prepared by soaking rice with the husk (paddy) in water, steamed at pressure for 20 to 30 minutes, dried in the sun and subsequently pounded or milled. The steaming splits the husk, making its separation easier, and this was probably the original purpose of parboiling. But more importantly, steaming causes thiamine and other nutrients to migrate from the outer lay-
ers into the endosperm, so that removing the outer layers by milling does not denude the grain of thiamine. Parboiling also has the effect of making the thiamine less accessible to water when rice is washed before cooking. n parboiled rice is not extensively attacked by weevils pest since the glazed surfaces are hard enough to resist the weevils’ bite. n the rice grows rancid (get spoiled) more slowly than undermilled rice because its enzymes have been destroyed by the heat. So parboiled rice is nutritious in comparison with polished rice, it is better to use parboiled rice for dosa and idly where people may not have the habit of consuming it directly as a rice item like in Andhra Pradesh.

be a challenge, and secondly, I strongly feel they deserve it, as they are the real people who make up this business.” It is said, in a man’s world, a woman’s survival is difficult, does she think it is true? She replies, “Absolutely true! I have travelled all over the world, and I have come to realise that this statement is true; more so, in India. If you are well established, you are appreciated and applauded, but when you go to the grassroot level, our society is not conducive to the survival of women.” She goes onto say, “For instance, women have to do justice to both the hearth and the work. The mother has to pack lunch for her children and head to work, come back and prepare dinner, wash clothes and probably do much more!” She further adds, “While one can be optimistic and say women are going places but, the fact remains that these women are very few! Why do men think that all they need to do, is work and earn money? That should not be the case; men are equally responsible for their houses as women are!” She says, “I was very lucky to have a supportive husband right from the beginning. Without him, I don’t think I would have been able to get to this position.” Who has been her inspirational force? Pat comes the reply, “Although my father came from an extremely well-to-do family, he saw the larger picture. He did a lot of social work, like bringing electricity to the neighbouring villages and a lot more. Therefore he is a major source of inspiration for me,” As a word of advice to women entrepreneurs, she says, “We, as women, must learn to see ourselves with respect and ensure that we inculcate the same values in our future generations. I feel women must be the first ones to start a womenfriendly atmosphere. Last, but not the least, be passionate about what you do, and always, be compassionate.”

ina Rao hails from an affluent Gujarati family, and going by her family history, her natural instincts should have pushed her into a business of jewellery or may be car dealership, but that was not the case. Bina started Creative Bee, an exclusive boutique that deals in handwoven textiles, 15 years ago as part of her efforts to save the dying ‘handmade and natural’ methods of making textiles. She gives us her reasons for starting the boutique, “Handloom is an art that is almost dying as it is labour-intensive and machines are fast replacing this skill. When I wanted to start my own unit, I had absolutely no support. There was zero opportunity for designers, especially in the handloom industry.” She goes onto say, with a hint of pride in her voice, “Today, I employ 200 weavers out of which, a majority are women and some with physical disabilities. They are involved in making of yarn, spinning, dyeing, making of blocks for printing, and finishing clothes as per the client’s requirement.” The list does not end there. Bina also trains and provides employment to hundreds of handloom weavers in many states. After training, if the workers don’t have the means to start their unit, Bina helps them out with that too. Most business owners prefer dealing with units that are more mechanised and less labour intensive, but Bina, has decided to go the unconventional route. “Yes, my business is largely dependent on labour, but the satisfaction of being able to provide livelihood to so many, and also keeping this traditional art alive is great.” She adds, “We pay fair wages; in fact, I usually pay 40–50 per cent more than what others pay. There are two reasons for it. Firstly, if they are satisfied, labour attrition would not

very time someone asks me my views on feminism, my mind automatically strays to Celine from Before Sunrise when she says, “You know, I have this awful paranoid thought that feminism was mostly invented by men so that they could like, fool around a little more. You know, women, free your minds, free your bodies, sleep with me.” But what I say is that I don't know. I don't know what feminism is supposed to be or what being a feminist means. Not really, anyway. And if all the talks that I have had with friends and colleagues are any indication, neither do they. Of course, we have read, heard, and even witnessed discrimination, oppression and subjugation that women are routinely subjected to. But we are not those women and that is not our fight. We are those who were brought up in egalitarian households, where we were treated no differently from our brothers. We are those who never let our gender define us, or our worth. We are those who will split the bill on a date, carry our own bags and detest reservations based on sex. Yet, for all that, we are haunted by our own demons. While we openly claim to be sexually liberated, we secretly fear the term 'slut'. We will confidently trade punches with head honchos in the board room but are still hesitant to show our feminity, lest it be considered a weakness. For some of us, to admit that they are not in the least bit maternal is a terrifying prospect, because to not want to be a mother is to not be a woman. And that just won’t do. So you see, ours is not the fight of our mothers or our grandmothers for basic civil rights. No, its far more complex. Ours is a quest to find a way to live through these contradictions. Or better, eliminate them altogether. But the first step is to accept that we are neither still repressed nor fully liberated; we are still in the process of finding ourselves. Maybe it’s time we do that before we go for the battle of the sexes.

e have grown up watching various skincare companies selling fairness creams on television; not surprising considering that ours is a country where people are basically dusky. While our Western counterparts are trying out various ways to get a tan, we on the other hand are trying to get fairer. Maybe that also explains why models from overseas are the rage here while our dusky breed is ruling the runways abroad. Bangalore-based dusky model Archana AK for one has been signed up by the Elite modelling agency and she is soon shifting her base to Paris. Does this say something? Here in India we have a product called Fair and Lovely and abroad, the same company has something called, Dark and Lovely as there they love the Indian skin tone. And when it comes to ramp and high fashion, dusky models are not only accepted but also appreciated," informs Archana. She further adds, "For the ramp, the way we carry ourselves is important, our complexion is something that is God-given. Yes, we are racist in our own way. We have Brazilian models capturing the Indian market because they are fair and we cannot shine in our own market. All the jobs are given to models from abroad, whereas Indians are appreciated abroad. I would say it’s this industry’s loss as I am moving to Paris very soon and I will come back a winner. I am blessed with a dusky complexion and I love my skin." But a lot of people including fashion guru Prasad Bidapa say otherwise. He says that dusky is in and very much in demand in the fashion industry here. He says, "Most supermodels, whether it is a Carol Gracias, Sheetal Malhar, Noyonika Chatterjee or Nina Manuel are dusky, so there’s no doubt that on the runway, dusky skin is preferred. There are no stigmas attached. One good thing about the fashion industry is that it’s not racist, it accepts any race, religion and creed." From a distance, it does look like the fashion industry is more acceptable than any other glam-
our industry when it comes to skin colour, though the truth might not be that pretty. Former model and now hairstylist Sangita Raj agrees with Archana on the discrimination in commercials. "I have always been appreciated and envied for my colour! But during auditions for commercials, the choice has always been fair skin. Though they allow you to audition, it’s a waste of time because they are in two minds. It’s a mix of their perceptions and the media’s requirements, so, no one can really change it,” she says with a resigned sigh and adds, “For instance, Fair and Lovely had Garima on its cover because she is dark and stunning, but afterwards the girls in the ad were changed. Have you ever seen Nina Manuel in an ad? Carol Gracias has one ad — Nokia,
Diandra Soares
where she dances but it’s a blinkand-miss shot. I know my market and I won't do ads that are not believable." Is it the same story for the males too? Choreographer Rahul Dev Shetty, who was a model himself, says, "I guess we still suffer from the fairness complex. During my days it was just becoming accepted and a dusky model had to be twice as good looking to be noticed. I guess the skin colour should work in Europe but as long as we believe that fair skin is better or more beautiful and more successful, dusky models will find it difficult to get commercial work." We have people like Vidisha Pavate, Tinu Verghese, Diandra Soares, Lakshmi Menon and more who are great models making their presence felt globally but finding acceptability in the Indian market remains a challenge.

THE TALE OF A HUMORIST Harish Koyalagundla’s journey into the film industry is quite inspiring for anyone who is in love with cinema. He tells us more about his career so far, and how acting in Teen Maar was a dream come true
Hemanth Kumar Hemanth.k@postnoon.com
H
arish Koyalagundla looks almost inconsequential to pay any attention at first sight, but once you end up having a conversation with him his sense of humour takes you by surprise. A couple of years ago, he made his debut in a film titled Inkosaari and since then he has acted in a handful of films like Vara Prasad Potti Prasad, Pilla Zamindar and It’s My Love Story. However, his biggest role so far, remains playing Pawan Kalyan’s friend in the flashback episode in Teen Maar. “It was a dream come true to act in Teen Maar. I am a big fan of Pawan Kalyan and I still remember having seen some of his films like Tholiprema, Badri and Kushiat at least 10 times,” he confesses. So, how did he end up bagging that role? “Short films! I had made quite a few short films and I have this habit of sending my short films to a lot of directors in the industry. Once, Jayant C Paranjee saw my work and he loved it. That’s how I ended up acting in Teen Maar,” he replies.
Born and brought up in Hyderabad, Harish fell in love with cricket and cinema as a child. “I wanted to be a cricketer at one point of time, but my parents threatened to disown me if I did that,” he chuckles. In 2003, he went to the Ferris State University in Michigan, US for his MS. “Vennela Kishore was my senior at this university and we hit it off instantly. We used to discuss about movies and Kishore used to tell me that we should make a film soon,” he recalls. Harish then went to University of New Orleans to complete his Masters and then worked in the US for more than four years in New Jersey, Washington DC and Boston. We ask him about his short films, which many years later got him a role in Teen Maar. “Boston is a very cold place and I used to end up spending a lot of time in my room. Luckily, I had a camera and I was casually fiddling with it when this idea of making short films struck me. One of my short films, Aapa Ra Hindi went viral back in 2008, which was really a big deal. That got me a lot of recognition in the Indian community back in the US,” Harish replies and adds, “And I couldn’t believe that even
Brahmanandam saw my work. Sometimes it feels like I am still in a dream.” He was earning close to $1,00,000 back in the US and he does agree that it was a difficult choice he had to make to pursue his dreams. “You need a lot of patience to pursue your dreams. Puri Jagannadh once told my friend, ‘If you want to succeed in life, you have to take risks.’ I am following the same principle. But it’s always better to have a back-up. Surviving in the industry is extremely difficult,” he says. He’ll soon be seen in Vennela Kishore’s directorial debut Vennela 1½, which is a sequel to Deva Katta’s Vennela. “The story takes off from where Vennela Kishore’s and Madhoo’s characters end in part 1. They come to Bangkok where they meet Chaitanya Krishna and me. We all end up as roommates. I play the role of a short-film maker in the film. It’s going to be a laugh riot,” he reveals. So what are his future plans? “I am going to give some more time for myself in the industry. I want to write scripts and act. Let’s see, maybe there are better things in store for me after the release of Vennela 1½,” he says and signs off.

PURI JAGANNADH
dumps Abhishek Bachchan
P
uri Jagannadh has decided to drop Abhishek Bachchan in the Hindi remake of The Businessman. Last year, after making Buddah Hoga Tera Baap, Puri Jagannadh had planned to make The Businessman with Mahesh Babu in Telugu and Abhishek Bachchan in Hindi. Since Abhishek was busy with other projects, Puri Jagannadh decided to make the Telugu version first. However, Abhishek’s dull run at the box-office in recent months seems to have prompted Puri Jagannadh to remake The Businessman in Hindi with Mahesh Babu. Recently, at the audio launch of the film, Puri Jagannadh coaxed Mahesh Babu to accept the project and now the industry is abuzz with rumours that the film might take off in August after Mahesh Babu completes shooting for his other films. Also, Puri Jagannadh has another film with Tarak, which will go on floors in March. For now, what is making news is the delay in The Businessman’s release. The film was initially slated for a January 11 release; however, now the producer Venkat, will release the film on January 13.
T
he extremely popular song, ‘Why This Kolaveri Di?’ sung by Dhanush, for his upcoming Tamil film 3, has caught the fancy of the nation so much that several versions of the song sprang up all over the Internet. Now, the makers of Sunil, Isha Chawla starrer Poola Rangadu have decided to make a spoof of the song for the film. In the past, several popular characters were spoofed by leading comedians like Brahmanandam, Venu Madhav, Ali and now, a spoof of Kolaveri sounds really interesting. Directed by Veerabhadram, the film has Sunil playing the role of a guy who ends up going to Warangal after losing everything in a real estate crash. He has even built some muscles for the film’s climax, which is touted to be the highlight of the film. Poola Rangadu is set to release on February 3.

she added. Whether it’s her romantic dalliance with her reality TV co-star Rahul Mahajan or her wearing a bikini during a water task in the second season of Bigg Boss or accusing filmmaker Dibaker Bannerjee of seeking sexual favours, Payal has always hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons. “I didn’t want to enter the pool in swimwear or create those controversies. They (show makers) created a task that had to be done in the water. Since it was water volleyball, I had
to wear an outfit that suits the sport. But they clipped a footage of mine entering the pool that was picked up by TV channels and converted it into a controversy. It was not my fault,” she said. “They could have shown a shot of me inside the water, but they shot me when I was getting inside the water, they (channel) were desperate to create TRPs,” she explained. However, she does credit the show for getting her recognition.”When I started off, nobody held my hand and told me
what I should do and how I should portray myself as an actor. When I went to Mumbai, I was in the process of figuring out what is good for me. Bigg Boss was a turning point. People started to relate to me. “What films did not give me TV gave me. In films, may be I was lost or typecast. I was imagined in a particular way; I might not be. his weekend Anil Kapoor and daughter Sonam Kapoor will be sharing screen space at last. Hold your horses folks! They are not acting in a film, the trailer of Anil’s new film Tezz is going to be attached to Players, which stars Sonam. This decision was taken
to fulfil daddy dearest’s request. Though back in the Tezz camp, the producers were not too keen on releasing the trailer so early as thay have planned an April release for the film. The trailer was apparently finished in a rush to accommodate the actor’s wish.
fter assisting composers for two decades, Raja Pandit has finally independently directed the soundtrack for the upcoming film Jeet Lengey Jahaan and thanks his father, well-known qawwali singer Sambhu of Shanker-Sambhu fame, for music lessons. “Yes, I have taken lessons in music from my father and guru Sambhuji. I have learnt Hindustani classical and Western music from him. I have also learnt bhajans, geet, tappa, thumri, Sufi and qawwali from him,” Raja said in an interview. The composer also revealed that he has worked with composers like Jatin-Lalit, Roop Kumar Rathod and Pritam. When asked how he got this offer, he said: “I was on the sets of the music reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa with Sanjay Leela Bhansali when his movie Guzaarish was to be released. And that is when Lalit SM Bisht, the director of the film, saw me playing the guitar. I met him and he liked my melodies that I had composed and this is how I got the film.” The seven songs composed by Raja have been sung by Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghosal, Shaan, Shail Hada and Pradeep Pandit. Raja has also lent his voice for a song. IANS

I
t’s pretty clear that the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Brandi Glanville is a little nutty— as evidenced by her quickie Vegas wedding. But do the crazy antics of the tall, string-bikini enthusiast include a lady-on-lady hookup with Demi Moore?! That’s what the tabloids and gossip sites are saying, and they’re always right. Right? As tantalising as those mental images might be, no. So how did this rumour even get started? Reports hit the web after The National Enquirer claimed the two beauties had a “fling” back in March 2009 at Moore’s ex-husband Bruce Willlis’ Turks & Caicos island estate. Fun story, but unfortunately, false. Glanville tells E! News these reports are “1000 per cent untrue.”
O
prah Winfrey has paid tribute to a previous guest from one of her shows who recently lost his battle with cancer. Hugh Jackman first brought attention to the plight of 36-year-old Kristian Anderson when he appeared as a guest star in a YouTube video that Kristian made as a surprise for his wife Rachel. The couple later appeared on Winfrey’s two-part Australian chatshow, where she gave them money towards Kristian’s treatment. Kristian passed away on January 2 and Winfrey has now passed on her condolences to Rachel and their children, saying, “Kristian was an inspiration to us all, the way he handled cancer with fierce grace. The light he left on Earth will not be dimmed by his passing.”

FOR JUPITER ASCENDING N atalie Portman took some well-deserved time off after winning her Best Actress Oscar for Black Swan last year (she also had this thing called, you know, a baby, which is just like a grown-up person except smaller and cuter), but if a somewhat nebulous story posted in the Los Angeles Times’ The Envelope is to be believed, the
actress may soon be getting back on Hollywood’s casting radar for a secretive sci-fi film titled Jupiter Ascending that’s being written by The Matrix filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski. The project, set up at the siblings’ longtime home Warner Bros., looks to be the Wachowskis’ next film after they finish post-production on Cloud
Atlas, an adaptation of David Mitchell’s portmanteau-style sci-fi novel that they co-directed with Run Lola Run helmer Tom Twyker. Starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent, among others, Atlas is expected to see release this fall, meaning the Wachowskis could realistically begin production on Jupiter by then.

It has been learnt that the hot Britis actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in a lead role in the film. No word yet on whether he’ll be a hero or villain. But Cumberbatch landed some sought-after roles recently in War Horse (as Major Stewart) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Peter Guillam). He will also portray Smaug the Dragon through motion capture and voice the Necromancer in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There And Back Again. The 35-year-old London-born is a veteran of both theatre and TV, most notably as Sherlock Holmes in the 2010 modern BBC adaptation series Sherlock. He also starred as Stephen Hawking in 2004’s Hawking and received a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor and won the Golden Nymph for Television Films and Best Performance by an Actor.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

India lost match on Day 1 itself
Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur
n India lost the Test match on the first day itself when
they managed only 191. There was no coming back after that as the wicket turned out to be a good one for batting. n India started the fourth day with a positive attitude
and this paid off with 129 runs coming in the first session. This rattled the Australian bowlers, particularly James Pattinson. n Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman played superbly.
They reeled off a number of boundaries and there was a glimmer of hope at that point. Tendulkar played some lovely shots square of the wicket but the landmark century eluded him again. n The failure of Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh
Dhoni accelerated India towards defeat though Ravichandran Ashwin showed his ability with the bat to get India to 400. n India should realise that by being positive and
aggressive, they can pose a challenge. The top order showed more determination in the second innings/ now a few hundreds will be required from them to bounce back at Perth.

BRADMANESQUE! SYDNEY: Australia’s media on Friday hailed Michael Clarke’s ‘Bradmanesque’ triple century against India, calling it the innings of the 21st century while praising his selfless declaration while unbeaten on 329. Captain Clarke became only the sixth Australian to score 300 before calling a halt to his team’s first innings at 659 for four and a massive lead of 468 runs on the third day of the second Test. “Bradmanesque Pup gives team a triple treat,” The Australian said in a front page headline, referring to the skipper by his nickname, given to him due to his youthful precociousness. The 30-year-old has battled to find support among the Australian cricket public since taking on the Test captaincy and a year ago was booed as he came out to bat in a one-day international against England in Brisbane. But his 329 not out on Thursday helped win over many detractors, particularly his decision to declare while just shy of beating the 334-run milestone of Australian greats Don Bradman and Mark Taylor. “The captain showed the poise and dedication he must always have known was within him,” The Australian said in an editorial. “The Bradman/Taylor mark stands, but Clarke can claim the innings of the 21st century, a remarkable, oldfashioned performance by a captain who
lived up to the finest traditions of the game.” He now ranks fourth behind Matthew Hayden (380), Taylor (334 not out) and Bradman (334) in the list of highest Australian Test innings. The Sydney Morning Herald was equally gushing in its praise of a man who is not the archetypal Australian cricket captain:
he’s fresh-faced, tattooed, and loves Twitter and the high life. “Pup’s long knock shows his time has finally come,” said columnist Greg Baum. Shane Warne, one of Clarke’s best friends, said he believed the Test skipper had won over Australia’s cricket fans. “He went through a stage where he copped a bit of a rough time unfairly,” he said.
No 100th 100 for Sachin, yet SYDNEY: Sachin Tendulkar again fell short of his 100th international century when he was dismissed for 80 in India’s second innings of the second Test in Sydney on Friday. Tendulkar looked on course to reach his elusive 100th ton before he edged spinner Michael Clarke to Mike Hussey at first slip. The Australian players rejoiced wildly with the capture of Tendulkar’s prized wicket in the middle session as India dug in to save the match after conceding a 468-run first innings lead. Tendulkar was given a standing ovation by the small fourth day crowd at the Sydney Cricket
Ground after he was out. He was dismissed for 73 and 32 in the first Test in Melbourne and 41 in the first innings of the Sydney Test. Tendulkar has been stranded on 99 Test and one-day international centuries since scoring 111 against South Africa in the World Cup in March. His last Test century was 146 against South Africa in Cape Town a year ago. The prized wicket capped a dream Test for Australian skipper Clarke, who scored an unbeaten 329 in Australia’s massive first innings of 659 for four declared.
