n a pathbreaking move that also has potential for misuse, the City police commissioner, Anurag Sharma, has directed all police stations in Hyderabad to make eve teasing a part of the check list the police will be using while issuing No Objection Certificates (NOC). This was decided after the commissioner held a conference with police officers in the light of 300 men being rounded up in an eight-day special drive against teasing recently. The commissioner believes that a stricter stance ought to be taken against this nuisance, especially because of the increasing number of crimes against women in the City. The police commissioner reportedly remarked that the issue went beyond mere teasing, as men posing as lovers often also take advantage of college girls. “We must stop this,” Sharma was quoted as saying. Accordingly, it was decided to deploy undercover policemen and policewomen in focal areas such as malls, bus stops, railway stations, cine-

ma halls and festival venues. Secunderabad, Park Lane, Cantonment, Jubilee bus stand, Begumpet, Punjagutta junction, Ameerpet, Khairatabad, Banjara Hills, Masab Tank, NMDC, Mehdipatnam and Vijaynagar Colony, Tolichowki, Moazamjahi Market, Nalgonda Crossroads, Chaderghat, Malakpet and Abids will have police personnel in plainclothes to patrol the area. When a person applies for a passport or a job, a police NOC is mandatory. At that time, the police plan to use this directive against youths who were caught harassing women in public. Some people have voiced fears that this directive may be misused by unscrupulous policemen. However, Akun Sabharwal, DCP (south zone), said, “I believe there will not be any misuse of this provision because the crime is registered under the IPC, which demands a cognisable offence and evidence. No policeman can whimsically register a case to spite anyone.” Meanwhile, the 300 caught for eveteasing have been released on personal bonds. But those caught henceforth face the danger of getting their NOC with a black blot.

F

resh from her victory at the 2012 London Olympics, shuttler Saina Nehwal arrived at Hyderabad this afternoon. Having clinched a bronze medal, Saina’s return was eagerly anticipated by family, friends and fans. However, thanks to the absence of any advance information of her homecoming, many fans and supporters missed her arrival at the airport. Her father, Harvir Singh Nehwal, was the only one from the family present as Saina’s elder sister will be reaching Hyderabad from Jalandhar tomorrow with their mother. However, scores of Harvir’s colleagues accompanied him to welcome his daughter. Brimming with delight and excitement at receiving his daughter, Harvir was discussing nothing but her feat at the Olympics. He shared his excitement with Postnoon while on his way to the airport.

“It has been a terrific experience. I am being escorted by my colleagues who have decided to give her a grand reception,” he said. Harvir is a scientist at the Directorate of Oilseeds Research, Hyderabad. “It is a very proud moment for me. I have been told that all the security arrangements have been made and we have been keeping track of her journey from London to Delhi to Hyderabad. Fans and supporters have already started gathering at our house in Gachibowli,” said Singh, while signing off. Saina, along with her coach P Gopichand, landed in the City around 12.30pm, from where they will proceed to attend a press meet at the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Gachibowli. Given that it is Ramzan, Harvir Singh says, “Of course we will be celebrating with biryani and haleem. I think she deserves it, considering that she has played one of the best games of her career in the tournament.”

Sikhs in City express concern over US gurudwara massacre Sikh organisations expressed shock over the incident. There is a need for raising awareness to prevent more such hate crimes.

One of the oldest markets on MG Road, General Bazaar, has been a favourite shopping destination for not only the women of Secunderabad but also for people visiting from the districts. Almost everything is available in this small lane connecting MG Road with RP Road. During the festive season, this lane is packed with shoppers from all over the City to buy a variety of goods at wholesale prices. A few years ago, General Bazaar was on the master plan, but the GHMC chose a better alternative for road widening, the Subash Road, which is yet to materialise. But some of the structures continue to be the underbelly of one of the oldest markets in Secunderabad, waiting to collapse at any time. Several of the buildings on the wider stretch towards the RP Road, continue to be an eyesore for authorities. But it appears that the GHMC is reluctant to evacuate people from the buildings. One of the buildings houses an age-old clinic that serves patients from public and private organisations. The doctor continues to live inside the building despite of its poor condition. “It would not be a big surprise, if the structure collapses,” notes M Satish, a businessman. Adjacent to the

building is another dilapidated one whose frontal portion seems to evacuated, but the rear portion houses a big jewellery shop. Exactly opposite to this on the General Bazaar road, is a big building that also appears to be in a poor condition. In most of these buildings, it is the tenants who do not want to disturb their business prospects by shifting.

STABLES IN THE PAST As the General Bazaar road narrows, there are several small old structures that have been converted into jewellery shops. “These were once stables, the people living in houses near the Jagannath Temple availed this structures as stables,” says Krishna, a businessman. According to him, these structures were occupied and later converted to suit their businesses. He directly blames

Several of the buildings on the wider stretch towards the RP Road, continue to be an eye sore for authorities. the GHMC for failure to shape the General Bazaar into a modern day market. Some of the businessmen prefer to remain tight-lipped about the issue, lest the issue proves detrimental to their prospects. “People are constructing new buildings in the lane. I do not know, if there are any old ones,”says Osman, another oldtimer. However, the owner of a century-old structure near a temple is not sure if the GHMC has listed his building or not.

While acknowledging that the structure might have lost its strength over the years, he asks that if the GHMC does not consider the old buildings fit, then why did they increase the tax for these buildings as well? “I had to pay double the amount than what I was paying,” says Sandeep Karda. For another similar building close by, the owner points out that the structure is strong enough, as he had himself refurbished it. According to the shop owner, the building was made stronger by chipping away weak portions and replastering it with cement.

‘NOTICES HAVE BEEN GIVEN’ The GHMC officials wash their hands off in this case. “We have given notices to evacuate. Even a second notice was given,” said BV Ganghadhar Reddy, deputy municipal commissioner, Circle 18.

YSRC,TDP jostle for space The TDP and YSRC are pulling out all the stops in their game of one-upmanship against each other. They have been picking on various issues in order to consolidate their position in the State politics. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

A

fter a lull, the main opposition party, the Telugu Desam and the YSR Congress have begun their game of one-upmanship for different reasons. While the YSR Congress is organising protest programmes and raising public issues for consolidating its position, the TDP is trying to plug the holes in it’s fort. The political fight between the two parties began with the agitation by YSR Congress honorary president YS Vijayalakshmi on the issue of the weavers' problems in Karimnagar district on July 23. Realising that the agitation was a runaway success, the Telugu Desam convened a meeting of weaver community at its headquarters and announced its support for the BCs.

She warned the Centre that the people of the State would take to the streets if the party's demand were not met. After two days of this development, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu too reacted on the issue and dashed off a similar letter to the PM on Monday with the same request. Commenting on this political fight, the YSR Congress leaders have said that the people of the State have mandated them to play the role of a constructive and a responsible opposition party. "We are discharging our responsibility as a responsible opposition party. The TDP has grossly failed in this area and left the people of the State in the lurch," YSR Congress Sevadalam president K Vinay Reddy told Postnoon.

Jaipal Reddy has publicly expressed his displeasure over the raging controversy and the attempts being made to tarnish his image. "I have done a lot for the State. But, being a Central minister I am in such a situation that prevents me from revealing what I have done for the State," he told media on the sidelines of a programme held in the City on Monday. He further added that the party had vowed to stand by the public in troubled times. However, the Telugu Desam leaders ridicule the argument of YSR Congress. They say that the party had always stood by the people in order to solve their problems. "We never neglected people's problems. We raised our voice whenever there is a problem," TDP leader and MLA G Kamlakar told Postnoon. Meanwhile, the two parties are set to cash in on World Weavers' Day celebrations being held today. Both the parties have decided to felicitate prominent weaver community leaders on this occasion. The Telugu Desam Party has also decided to hold these celebrations at all major weavers' towns in the State like Mangalagiri, Sircilla, Dharmvaram, Chirala, Warangal and Jagityala.

Amidst the raging controversy, the comments made by APCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana that the State government and all political parties in the State should take responsibility for the gas allocation debacle not only angered the opposition political parties but has also left many ruling party leaders fuming. "How can he make such a remark? It sends out a wrong signal to the public about the government and the party. The State does not have any role in allocation of gas," one senior Congress leader told Postnoon. On the other hand, the main opposition TDP leader Dadi Veerabadra Rao said that Botsa Satyanarayan is trying to shirk his responsibility as a cabinet minister. “His statement is completely baseless and is an attempt to save his declining popularity," he said.

Habsiguda jam irks commuters Bad roads, metro work and a weekly bazaar contribute to the terrible traffic gridlocks on the Uppal main road. Traffic police and metro marshals express helplessness about the problem. DEEPAK DESHPANDE

SUDESHNA KOKA sudeshna.k@postnoon.com

If we remove the weekly market, it will be difficult for citizens. The metro is also for the benefit of citizens. Till metro work is completed, there is no other way out.

W

ide, clean and well maintained roads were the reasons most citizens used to choose Uppal main road for their long drive. Today, the opposite is true. Motorists are mortally afraid of crossing this jumble of machines. The stretch between Habsiguda and Uppal has become narrower due to metro rail work. The topography of the road is such that it has places of worship in the middle of the road. At such junctions, the roads get very narrow and commuting is challenging. The metro construction work started six months back. Adding to the mess were the rains. “It’s a challenge to drive on this stretch now. Earlier, we could cross this stretch in less than five minutes, now it takes us more than 30 minutes. We don’t have an alternative route,” said Meghna Reddy, a student.

S Hari Vardhan Reddy corporator As if all this was not enough, the Monday market makes the situation worse. For 20 years, vendors have been selling vegetables by the road but due to the metro work, they have encroached the space meant for motorists. “We have been here for the last 20 years. Until now, everything was good. Suddenly, the traffic police wants us to

move, why should we?” questions Rajendar M, a vendor. Another vendor, Yadagiri, chips in, “All these years, they used our service and now they want us to go? Why can’t the government do something? When they know people come to us why don’t they build a permanent market for us?” Commuters complain that

it’s impossible to commute on this road. “There is practically nothing we can do. The whole problem starts from Masjid Road; the roads are bad, so traffic moves slow. The metro construction makes traffic movement painful,” said G Ravinder, a traffic cop. All this despite the metro rail appointing metro traffic mar-

shals to help. “Our job is to ensure traffic moves smoothly but here, there are glitches like the bad roads, the structures in the middle of the road and on Monday, the bazaar. Until the metro work is completed, there is no relief for commuters,” said Malesh B, metro traffic marshal. Gurupreth Singh, who has been selling helmets for the last 18 years here, said this was the first time he has seen such a pathetic condition of the road. “Earlier, this was one of the best roads but now there is no defined one-way movement. People drive any which way they want to,” he said. The corporator, S Hari Vardhan Reddy, on the other hand, says this is how it is and citizens have to put up with it. “What can I do? Both the market and the metro rail are needed. If we remove the market, it will be difficult for citizens. The metro is also for the benefit of citizens. Till the metro work is completed, there is no other way out,” the corporator said.

and targeted,” said Daljeet Singh, member of Andhra Pradesh Sikh Welfare Association. Around 300 members, under the banner of Andhra Pradesh Sikh Welfare Association, gathered in front of the US Consulate office for a ‘peaceful’ demonstra-

tion. They also submitted a memorandum to the Consulate officials condemning the killing and denouncing acts of violence against the Sikh community. They demanded that Sikhs in the US be provided with adequate security to prevent such heinous communal attacks in the future.

The US consulate told the delegation that the incident at Wisconsin was unfortunate and said that the matter would be brought to the notice of higher ups. “This recent attack on Sikhs in their place of worship is a case of security lapse on the part of the US government where innocent worshippers have become victims of violence. Sikhs are peace-loving people who respect all religions. This kind of crime against the Sikhs attacks the very foundation of religious freedom upon which the country was built. A chain of prayers will be held in various gurdwaras in the City for the victims,” said Ranjeet Sethi, a member of the community. Six people were killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire in a gurdwara in Wisconsin in the US during Sunday morning prayers.

arnataka MLA Gali Somasekhara Reddy appeared before the ACB authorities for the fourth consecutive day on Monday in connection with the cash-for-bail-scam. ACB strongly suspects that Somasekhara Reddy was involved in the bribing of CBI judge Pattabhirama Rao to secure bail for his brother and Karnataka former minister Gali Janardana Reddy, who was arrested in connection with the Obulapuram min-

R

elay fast against the Kakarapalli Thermal Power Plant in Andhra Pradesh entered its 716th day on the date when India witnessed the historic two-day black out on July 30 and 31, 2012. A huge banner with pictures of people killed and houses destroyed in the violence unleashed by armed police force in Vedditandra and HN Peta in Kakarapalli on February 25 and 28, 2011, covered the stage as the villagers of Vedditandra, Kollur and Santhabommali took turns to continue the hunger strike. The blackout that plunged 600 million people into darkness in North, East and North-Eastern parts of the nation threw open debates across the world on the dwindling power supply and its impact on the economic growth of the country, lest we forget that India is the fifth largest power generating nation. Ministry of Power and Central Electricity Authority (CEA) have projected a total investment requirement of `11,35,142 crore for the power sector during the 12th Plan period, which includes investment for generation capacity addition of about 1,00,000 MW. (Existing capacity is 1,64,508 MW). The overall share of thermal power in total installed generation capacity is likely to increase from 64 per cent (FY2010) to about 74 per cent by the end of 12th Plan. For instance, in Andhra Pradesh alone the government has planned to set up 107 coalbased thermal projects. Environmental activist Rathnam Janapareddy said, “In 2005, Andhra Pradesh government passed a GO 34 to set up the Industrial Coastal Corridor. Thereby, sanctioning 107 coalbased thermal power plants from Itchapuram to TADA spreading over an area of 972km of coast where 80 lakh fishermen live.” The conflict between devel-

opment and protection of ecology continues. Former secretary, ministry of power, government of India and former (Advisor) energy, planning commission, EAS Sarma feels that power demand can be met by maintaining transmission and distribution network and using renewable sources. Fishermen and farmers continue their stiff resistance against thermal power plants that are set to engulf huge tracts of fertile land in rural areas. A case in point is the Kakarapalli in Srikakulam. As part of the coastal corridor project, East Coast Energy Pvt Limited was sanctioned 2,000 acres of land for the construction of 2,640MW of Kakarapalli coal-based thermal power project. The company has built a bund around the plant to raise the level of swamp, altering the natural drainage system, which led to floods destroying 10,000 acres of farm land last year. Besides, two years back the government withdrew GO 1108

that permitted fishermen to fish in the ponds. Agitated by this, farmers and fishermen protested, stopping the construction materials from entering the place. This led to clashes with the police in February 2011. The firing that ensued killed three and injured many. Attempt to murder cases were booked against

over 2,000 people. In fact, Anantha Manekamma, 92, was incarcerated for 16 days. “A case of attempt to murder was booked against me,” she said. She was not the only elderly woman, Gayashri Lakshmamma, 80, and Sinthala Kousalya, 70, were also arrested. Undeterred by the police crackdown, people here continue their protest. “We will not allow the plant. We have seen what has happened in Paravada after the Simhadri plant. Ground water is polluted, crops are destroyed. The municipality sends two water tankers. Our village will not have the same fate,” says Karunya Keshava, member of anti-thermal struggle committee.

IMPACT ON ECOLOGY

The company in its environment impact assessment report has described the area as barren, uninhabited and low-lying. However, forest department has termed it a wetland area with rich biodiversity. Karunya

Kethro, president, Co-operative Society of Fishers, said, “There are 40 middle-sized ponds in the marshy land and 6,000 fishermen are dependent on this and a vast area of salt farms which provide livelihood to 30,000 people.” Surrounding the site, there are 2,400 ha of farms. Water from the Garibula, Bheemapuram and Enugula streams flow into the sea at the Tekkali creek. The swamp is sandwiched between the mainland and the Bay of Bengal. There are streams, water bogs, canal system and lush green forest towards the sea. About 3.5km from the plant, there is Telineelapuram Birds Sanctuary which attracts birds from Siberia and more than 100 species of birds including spotbilled pelicans and painted storks come here. The Expert Appraisal Committee sub-group reported that the project should not come up here as it is an ecologically sensitive area. According to 2004-05 statistics, the total rice produced is 96, 01,045 tones. If costal corridor is formed in the present area State would be losing 67,64,203 tones of rice in 20,23,087 hectors of the

If coastal corridor is formed, the yield will be totally lost. Studies across the world have shown the ecological and health impacts of thermal power plants, it is now up to the government to choose for better alternatives.

xperts in the power sector feel that the fears of farmers and fishermen cannot be dismissed as baseless. It is the unrealistic projection of energy demands, huge power projects with generation capacity of more than three times the required energy and the scant regard towards maintenance of transmission and distribution lines that has led to the failure of the system. Former secretary, ministry of power, government of India and former (Advisor), planning commission, EAS Sarma says that the transmission distribution loss in the country is 35 to 37 per cent. “If, we would bring down the losses to 25 per cent of it by transformer and voltage line upgradation itself nearly 60,000MW could be saved. This should be done systematically by making investments. Base load is almost 80 per cent and

we use thermal power stations. We spend `8 per KWhr for producing power through coalbased thermal power plants. We are producing costly power and losing power due to inefficient transmission and distribution network,” he said. He added that India is committed to conserve wetlands under the Ramsar international Convention on Wetlands and two other international conventions, one on conservation of migratory bird species and another on conservation of biodiversity. In almost all these cases, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, Water, Land and Trees (State) Act, 2002, several rules and regulations to protect water bodies and greenery etc have been violated by the companies and the government. Coal-based power plants contribute significantly to green

house gas (GHG) emissions. Added to this, wetland degradation is also a major contributor to GHG emissions. The secretariat of Ramsar Convention has issued an advisory to member countries to prevent any such degradation to protect the global climate. In Nellore district, within 5km of Krishnapatnam Port, the State has permitted a whopping 28,000MW of coal-based thermal generation capacity to come up! All around Krishnapatnam, these power projects will create a pollution cauldron. Assuming that these power plants will burn domestic and imported coals in the ratio 70:30, once they start operating, they will burn 400,000 tonnes of coal daily, spew out 141,000 tonnes of ash per day on the ground, into the water bodies and into the air, deposit 20,720 tonnes of sulphur per day and 15,000 tonnes of nitrogen into the air, in addition to many other toxins like mercury, arsenic, zinc and cadmium. A generation capacity of 28,000MW will drain 84 million cubic meters of water every day from the sea nearby and pump back large quantities of heat into the sea waters to destroy the marine resources! “These plants call for a large well-planned transmission system which is yet to get conceptualised. It shows how illplanned and ad hoc is the decision to permit such a large number of projects to come up concentrated in small localised areas,” Sarma stated. Environmentalist Suresh Heblikar states thermal plants could be used if sophisticated technologies are adopted. But, the equipment is expensive and the calorific value of coal in the country is not very efficient. Hence, the coal-based thermal power plants should be slowly phased out and moved to solar energy. In Germany, nearly 65 per cent of the energy generated is from solar and even China is slowly moving towards it.

China’s miraculous growth is slowing; wages are rising and the endless labor supply has reached its limit. A fundamental shift is emerging. DAVID CASE

The founder and former chairman of Best Buy on Monday offered to take full control of the struggling electronics retailer in a deal that values the firm at up to $8.84 billion. Richard Schulze, who owns about 20 per cent of the big-box chain, proposed to buy the shares he does not already own at between $24 and $26 per share, representing a premium of up to 47 percent on Friday's closing price of $17.64. Best Buy confirmed it had received Schulze's letter to the board requesting due diligence and outlining "an unsolicited, highly conditional indication of interest" in acquiring the shares. The Minneapolis, Minnesotabased company said the board will evaluate his proposal "carefully and will, as always, pursue the best course for its shareholders." Best Buy swung into loss in its fiscal 2012 year that ended March 3, losing $1.23 billion.

F

or the past decades, the country has largely been defined by surging economic growth. That growth is now declining. Consider the numbers. This year, Beijing expects GDP to expand by 7.6 per cent. That’s brisk by global standards, but lethargic for China, where the economy grew by more than 10 per cent for five years beginning in 2003. It peaked at a robust 14.2 per cent in 2007. Unemployment is low, workers are gaining power to negotiate, and wages are rising; they’re expected to triple between 2011 and 2017. In short, China’s greatest resource — its inexhaustible supply of cheap labor — has reached its limit. To put China’s changes in perspective, GlobalPost spoke with Ruchir Sharma, author of Breakout Nations, an insightful analysis of why some countries excel while others languish. Sharma is Morgan Stanley’s head of emerging market equities and global macro strategy. For years, analysts have bemoaned Chinese consumers’ relatively small contribution to economic demand. Will higher wages in China finally unleash the promise of the Chinese consumer, with all its hoped for benefits as a new engine of global growth or is this a myth? The case of the missing Chinese consumer is a myth. Consumption has already been growing in real terms, about 8 per cent per year for the past decade. The only reason why it looks like the Chinese consumer is suppressed is because the other drivers of the economy — exports and investment — have been running at an even faster pace. So there’s an appearance that 8 per cent consumption growth in real terms is a bit slow. With wage increases, Chinese consumption can continue to grow at about 8 per cent. Consumption will rise as a share of GDP, as export and investment growth slows down.

NUMEROLOGY

Consumption never grows faster than 8 per cent in any country. Even in the economies of Japan, Taiwan and Korea — at the peak of their booms — consumption never topped 8 per cent annually. Beijing is struggling with a relatively rocky leadership change. Are there reforms that the new leadership should embrace that would further help China grow? And are they likely to embrace them? The most important thing — which I think they’re already doing but that they could do better — is to realise that the days when China could grow at double digits are over. Even 8 per cent growth is not very feasible any more just because the law of large numbers has caught up with China. Its base is very large, and its per capita income is about $6,000. China is now a middle-aged country, and the growth rate needs to be adjusted accordingly. So the most important thing is to not make the big mistake of launching some massive stimulus to try to achieve a growth target which is no longer realistic. The only way you achieve 8

China is now a middle-aged country, and the growth rate needs to be adjusted accordingly. Its base is very large and per capita income is about $6,000. Ruchir Sharma Morgan Stanley to 10 per cent growth is by growing investment at a very rapid pace. Even today investment as a share of GDP is touching 50 per cent. If China does another stimulus, there would be a lot of waste. How will rising wages and the tightening labor force in China affect those whose products are manufactured there? Southeast Asia will be the big beneficiary, and especially the TIP countries of Southeast Asia — Thailand, Indonesia,

and the Philippines. In a way, this is a role reversal of what we saw in the 1990s. Back then, Chinese wages were very low and there was a devaluation of the Chinese currency — making those countries uncompetitive. Now, I think the shoe is on the other foot. On China’s development stage facing a middle income trap — in which an inability to innovate blocks them from rising to the ranks of a rich country. Do you think China can surmount this challenge? China still has some way to go before it faces that. The problem with a middle income trap is that you don’t quite know where it hits you. Some countries have stalled when they achieve a per capita income just 10 per cent the size of the US — that would mean $4,000 to $5,000. Some economies stall at a per capita income level of up to $16,000. Currently, a middle income trap is not my base case of China. It would really be the worst case scenario. It would mean that China would not be able to grow much at all, and that would be a troubling outcome for the global economy.

Keshav, who has been teaching Muaythai and other forms of martial arts for the last 25 years here, said increasing number of IT professionals were attending his courses. The objective of the programmes offered by his association is to equip participants in practical self-defence techniques and fighting skills and develop mental strength that can be readily utilised when there was a need, Keshav, who has also trained some film artistes, said. “Martial arts not only helps them to stay fit but also trains them to develop self-confidence. So far I would have trained about 5,000 people. Most of them

Kavitha Viswanath, 28, an employee of a leading software firm here, attends muaythai boxing classes two days every week. “I was a bit reluctant to join in the beginning, since I wasn’t sure of what I was getting into. But now, after a few classes, I think this is an amazing sport,” she said. Keshav said the association offered special course for women. “We offer special self defence courses for women, teaching techniques aimed at avoiding or combating any type of physical confrontation. Most of the women come to us to learn selfdefence techniques and some to stay fit.” Keshav, who also offers customised packages for children, said by practising martial art, children develop good manners, eye contact, and public speaking skills. Emu farming spreads wings in Himachal PALAMPUR: It is a poultry bird that does not fly but ensures a steady income. Now a second emu-rearing farm has come up in Himachal Pradesh. Ever since the farm was set up in this town in Kangra district in May, it has become a centre of attraction for young and progressive farmers looking for diversification. “We started an emu farm with 10 birds. All are in the breeding stage,” Sanjeevan Sharma, a young computer engineer, told IANS. He said he and his advocate friend Arvind Awasthi started the farm with `4 lakh. The state’s first emu farm is in Solan district. Ashish Naval, who set it up

almost one and a half years ago, said rearing emu is a highly remunerative meat-processing industry. Naval, who now has more than 30 emu farms across the country with more than 2,000 pairs, said one caretaker can easily handle more than 100 emu pairs. “For 20 pairs, a 500 sq. ft. area is enough. If a farm is hatching chicks and selling breeding birds, in the first year the entrepreneur can recover 90 percent of the project cost.” He said a three-month-old pair easily fetches `10,000, whereas the egg costs around `1,000. “In economic terms, the return is 10 times more with just

The weather in the mid-hills of the state is congenial for rearing emus, said RS Kishtwaria, former deputy director of the animal husbandry department of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar HP Agriculture University. He said emu farming, because of the low maintenance cost, would be more successful in areas where people find it hard to grow fruit crops due to the monkey menace. Sanjeevan Sharma said he had received good response on emu farming from farmers across Himachal.

Economics An acre is sufficient to raise 30 emu pairs, from which one can reap a profit of more than `10 lakh a year. An adult bird, which starts laying eggs after 18 months of hatching, continues to breed till the age of 40. An adult emu pair costs around `30,000 and an egg sells for up to `1,200. Meat sells for about Rs 350 per kg.On an average, a healthy emu lays up to 40 eggs in a year.

“A number of farmers from Shimla, Sirmaur and Solan districts where the monkey menace is acute are contacting us to know about this poultry business. We have already received orders to procure emu eggs and pairs,” he said. IANS

Numerous images of the carsized rover and its alien surroundings have come back to NASA since the landing occurred at 10.32pm Sunday on the US West Coast (0532 GMT

New images of the rover’s descent, taken from the vehicle itself, were shown on NASA television, strung together in a video that depicted the spacecraft’s heat shield deploying and dust kicked up before the rover landed wheels down. Other black and white images show the rover’s shadow and Mount Sharp in the distance, a mountain it aims to conquer as part of its two-year mission to explore Mars and analyze sediment layers that are up to a billion years old. Rains bring Manila to standstill, 20,000 flee

KABUL: A Taliban bomb killed eight people and wounded five on Tuesday when it struck a minibus in Kabul, police said, amid growing unrest in areas neighbouring the Afghan capital. NATO’s International Security Assistance Force, which has 130,000 US-led troops in Afghanistan, has also noted a spike in attacks countrywide.

BEIJING: China evacuated 200,000 people from Shanghai as the third typhoon in a week bore down on the east coast, state media said Tuesday, warning it could be the most powerful storm to hit since 2005. Typhoon Haikui was expected to make landfall in Zhejiang province, just south of Shanghai, late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

JERUSALEM: Israel has returned the bodies of six gunmen, who killed 16 Egyptian border guards in the Sinai, to its Arab neighbour, Israeli public radio reported Tuesday. The six were sent back overnight Monday, the radio report said. Contacted by AFP an Israeli army spokeswoman would not immediately confirm the report.

MANILA: Torrential rains brought the Philippines capital to a standstill Tuesday, forcing at least 20,000 people to flee their homes as floodwaters covered half the sprawling city, authorities said. Schools, financial markets and most government and private offices were shut as key roadways in Manila were submerged by waters that in some areas.

Frantic regional governments battling to outdo each other to attract scant investment. Spaniards are desperate. Enter American casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. The controversial owner of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. and third-richest American wants to build a version of the Nevada gambling mecca in the outskirts of Madrid or Barcelona. A megaresort dedicated to entertainment and business conferences, it would include 12 hotels, six casinos and three golf courses spread across 2,000 acres — the biggest urban development project in Spain since the 1992 Olympics. The main hook: EuroVegas would create up to 250,000 jobs in a country where almost 6 million people, up to a quarter of the workforce, are unemployed. At least that was the pitch until the projected number fell to 14,000 when the company’s directors visited Spain in June, when they also announced a drop in investment from $21 billion to $7.3 billion, two-thirds of which would have to come from Spanish banks. Nevertheless, Spain’s two largest cities are lobbying hard against each other for the bid. “EuroVegas is very important,” said Andreu Mas-Colell, economy minister for Catalonia, of which Barcelona is capital. “We are making the necessary efforts to bring it here.” But despite the project’s attractiveness to officials, it's generating heated opposition from a growing number of critics who question its viability. PUTTING AL-QAEDA IN PERSPECTIVE THOUGHTS ON TERROR

John Mueller and Mark G. Stewart

I

n September 2001, members of Al Qaeda — a fringe group within a fringe group and with grandiose visions of its own importance — managed, largely because of luck, to pull off a risky terrorist act that became the most destructive in history. Yet the United States has been reluctant to maintain that such a monumental event could have been carried out by a fundamentally trivial group, and it has greatly inflated Al Qaeda’s importance. Some seasoned professionals even maintain that the tiny group presents an “existential” threat to the very survival of the US. As a result, the US reaction to the attacks of Sept. 11 has been massively disproportionate to the threat that Al Qaeda has actually presented, either as an international menace or an inspiration to homegrown amateurs. Trillions of dollars have been expended and tens of thousands of lives have been snuffed out in distant wars in a frantic, ill-conceived effort to react to an event that, however tragic and dramatic, was not ultimately of far-reaching significance. A standard cost-benefit analysis suggests that enhanced US

domestic expenditures on homeland security since 9/11 would have to prevent one large attack per day to be cost effective. In fact, terrorists have been unable to detonate even a primitive bomb in the US since Sept. 11, and they have killed only a handful of people by gunfire. The chance that an American will perish at the hands of a terrorist at present rates is 1 in 3.5 million per year. And extremist Islamist terrorism worldwide has claimed 200400 lives per year outside war zones, which although tragic and regrettable, amounts to the yearly number of bathtub drownings in the United States. Meanwhile, beyond uniting the world against its violent jihad, Al Qaeda central has done little except issue self-infatuated threats. Material seized when Osama bin Laden was killed last year reveals that its members have been primarily occupied with dodging drones, complaining about the lack of funds, and watching a lot of pornography. The common extrapolation that terrorists could construct a nuclear bomb because they were able, mostly by thuggish means, to crash airplanes into buildings reflects how delusional and exaggerated the US perception of the Al Qaeda threat is. Although the thousands upon thousands of Al Qaeda operatives once thought to be

flourishing in the United States proved to be nonexistent, the quest to make that delusion more closely fit reality has impelled a massive expansion of domestic policing. As part of this, the FBI receives more than 5,000 “threats” a day. Only a tiny number of these have led to terrorism arrests, but the FBI continues to follow up all of them — some in the Bureau call “ghost chasing.” If Sept. 11 was an aberration rather than a harbinger, anxieties in the US about terrorism should be receding. Yet 35 to 40 per cent of Americans continue to profess worry, even after the death of bin Laden, that they or a family member might become a victim of terrorism. The peculiar trauma of the Sept. 11 attacks as well as the perception that Muslim

extremist terrorists are out to kill as many people as possible may be fueling this anxiety. In addition, US government officials continue to stoke fear, emphasizing what failed terrorist plotters had hoped to do instead of what they were realistically likely to have done. Yet official alarmism has tapered off in recent years, and warnings that the country must brace itself for a large imminent attack are now rarely heard. Policymakers and the media now tend to respond to the fears of the public rather than create them. Americans seem to have internalized their anxiety. A fundamental reassessment of the problem therefore seems unlikely, and the terrorism delusion may accordingly prove to be perpetual. GLOBAL POST

She remembers it was hard, but she had reseolved that she was not stepping back and won over her father who was initially against her getting into this 'manly' sport. That's a long time back. Mary has covered miles in her sport: five-time world champion, several medals in the 46 and 48kg categories. But the London Olympics was a challenge. Since the lowest weight category is 51kg, she had to gain weight. Never known to step back from a challenge, she took it in her stride and had been competing in this category for the last two years, though she admits, "Put in the 46kg or 48kg category and I can assure you that nobody can beat me. Here, it is a fight." Now, she has breezed past Tunisia’s Maroua Rahali 15-6 into the semis and ensured a bronze. But Mary Kom is best in her sport and her feats tell us that she is one who will settle only for the best of results. That’s the spirit, Mary.

Women techies in the city do not have it easy since they sometimes have to travel for hours to get to work. And many a time they have to encounter eve teasers who try to get their way with them before they reach their workplace. Comp-anies have come up with the perfect solution to this — teaching women employees to kick butt. Self-defence classes are being organised in companies like ADP and Broadridge in an attempt to equip their female staff to take care of themselves when in times of emergencies. Who is a PR?

August 6 is celebrated as the Public Relations Education Day. This day was formed to commemorate the 75th birthday of CV Narasimha Reddi, a stalwart in PR. Today, I would not like to highlight what PR is, but what PR is NOT. Let us bust some myths.

Myth 1- PR Can't be measured

E

ven though PR is more focused towards brand building and image management, there are ways in which the credibility of PR tools can be gauged and its results can be tracked. PR carries a lot of weightage due to its third party endorsement.

Myth 2- PR is All about Press Releases and

Press Conferences

P

ress release and press conference are just two very tools which a PR uses to communicate with the media. In fact, press conferences should be selectively used for very important announcements.

Myth 3- PR is like free advertising.

P

R can never replace advertising or vice versa. In some

cases, getting effective media coverage can cost more than advertising.

Myth 4- Good PR can make up for a bad product

N

o amount of PR can ever build a product which carries no quality or brand promise. In fact, hiding the facts and projecting a rosy image is what PR can never do. No company, product

or service is perfect.

Myth 5- PR is all about client relations

R

elation with different target audiences does make an important function of PR. But only a part of it. PR is much beyond this, a lot more strategic encompassing various communications functions. Madhu Joshi, Director of Public Relations, The Park

Working in the IT sector is not only considered stressful because of the timings and spending long hours on a computer but also has given rise to a number of technology related health issues

T

echnology has changed our lives. They may have made things simpler, but it all comes at a price. People working in the sectors that develop these technologies suffer from various health ailments which are considered to be associated with their work-culture and way of life. However, these problems may affect anybody who is hooked to technology otherwise too.

BLACKBERRY THUMB Blackberry thumb usually refers to a type of injury that occurs due to excessive use of the thumb for using mobile phones and computers. The condition is also known as cell phone thumb. The symptoms for Blackberry thumb include a throbbing pain in the wrist or the thumb. Dr Chandran Gnanamuthu, consultant neurologist, Fortis Hospital, Bangalore says, “This may occur when the nerves on either sides of the thumb get compressed.” In order to prevent Blackberry thumb, it is advised that one takes a break while texting. Exercising and relaxing the fingers is also advised.

TECH NECK Tech neck refers to a condition represented by soreness in the neck. Dr Amitava Ray, consultant neurosurgeon, Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, says, ”Tech neck occurs when you sit in front of the computer for a long period of time. The body has not been designed for a sedentary lifestyle, thus sitting for prolonged periods may cause a spasm that goes down the neck till the hand.” In order to prevent tech neck, Dr Ray suggests that one works on one’s posture (do not slouch) and the computer be placed at eye level.

CARPAL TUNNEL

Carpal tunnel syndrome refers to a situation in which there is pressure on the median nerve that then causes numbness, tingling, weakness or muscle damage in the hand and fingers. Dr Chandran says, “Carpal tunnel syndrome is common among people with hypothyroidism, people who are obese and also those who ride motorbikes.” It is also said to be common among those whose work involves repetitive use of the wrist and the thumb such as typing writing, sewing, painting etc. Dr Chandran says that treatment for Carpal tunnel may include inserting a splint into the

Encephalitis is irritation and swelling of the brain, due to infections. It is a rare condition. It occurs more often in the first year of life and decreases with age. It is important to identify the underlying problem. Sciatica could be due to a slip disc, fracture and sometimes even tumour. Dr Chandran says, “Sciatica tends to occur due to lifting of weights. It can be one of the problems that occurs due to sitting for long hours although it is not always the reason.” Talking about treatment, he says that bed rest, medications and physiotherapy may be advised. When it comes to preventing sciatica Dr Amitava advises exer-

PREVENTION While we can’t change the way we function, we can certainly take preventive measures. “It is important to move around every two hours — walk around, use the stairs. If one is troubled by back problems and rides a bike then use a heavier one as it is more stable,” advises Dr Chandran. RESEARCH

CANCER

Scientists developing anti-malaria shot SYDNEY: Australian researchers have made a major breakthrough in the quest for a vaccine against malaria, which snuffs out a million lives every year, particularly of children. The findings show that people who develop immunity to malaria develop antibodies that primarily target a protein known as PfEMP1, which is produced by Plasmodium falciparum, causing most cases of malaria. James Beeson, professor and senior study author at the Burnet Institute, Australia’s largest virology and communicable disease research centre, said that these findings are a major advance towards developing an effective vac-

A vaccine against malaria is urgently needed to reduce this disease globally and currently there is no licensed malaria vaccine available. James Beeson senior study author cine, the Journal of Clinical Investigation reports. These findings unlock the

mystery of which malaria proteins, known as variant surface antigens (VSAs), could be targeted by an effective vaccine to achieve immunity to malaria, according to a Burnet statement. “A vaccine against malaria is urgently needed to reduce this disease globally and currently there is no licensed malaria vaccine available. The new findings support the idea that a vaccine could be developed that stimulates the immune system so that it specifically mounts a strong response (or attack) against the PfEMP1 protein that malaria produces,” said Beeson. Study co-author, Jo-Anne Chan said the findings also

showed that when the immune system attacks other proteins that malaria produces, this is not as effective in protecting people. This emphasises that the immune system has to ‘get it right’ in order to fight malaria infection effectively. Malaria is caused by a parasite that infects human red blood cells and replicates within them. While inside these cells, malaria parasites produce specific proteins that enable infected cells to stick and clog-up blood vessels in the body. This clogging can occur in organs such as the brain and lungs, and the placenta in pregnant women, and causes severe illness and death. IANS

Chemotherapy can backfire and worsen cancer: Study

D

espite its life-saving qualities, chemotherapy has long had a nasty reputation, known as a necessary poison for people suffering from cancer. But in some cases, chemotherapy is so damaging that it may even backfire and make the cancer worse, a new study has found. The study, published in Nature Medicine, found that chemotherapy causes damage to healthy cells, which triggers them secrete a protein that actually sustains tumor growth, Cancer UK reported. The researchers made the finding while trying to figure out a major mystery: why are cancer cells are so easy to kill in a lab, but so difficult to kill in the human body? The findings were “completely unexpected,” researchers told AFP. In cancer treatment, tumors often respond well at first, only to rapidly regrow and become resistant to chemotherapy later on, AFP reported. “Our results indicate that damage responses in benign cells... may directly contribute to enhanced tumor growth kinetics,” the research team wrote. A solution to this problem would be chemotherapy that is better at targeting cancer cells and avoiding healthy cells. Previous research has found that chemotherapy can also cause brain damage. Radiation cancer treatments have also been shown to cause cancer later on. GLOBAL POST

NEW ‘SPRAY-ON SKIN’ HEALS ULCERS FASTER: STUDY LONDON: A ‘spray-on skin’ can speed up healing of chronic ulcers by 50 per cent, a new study suggests. The spray quickly healed venous leg ulcers (the most common type) and improved the chances of wound closure in 228 patients. Those receiving the most effective dosage were 52

per cent more likely to see their ulcer clear up after three months than untreated patients. They also experienced a 16 per cent greater reduction in wound area after seven days. In addition, the treatment helped wounds to close 21 days earlier, medical journal Lancet reports. Herbert Slade, study co-

author from Healthpoint Biotherapeutics in Fort Worth, Texas, US, said: “The treatment we tested in this study has the potential to vastly improve recovery times and overall recovery from leg ulcers without the need for a skin graft.” People with restricted movement, obese individuals and

those with varicose veins all face a greater risk of developing venous leg ulcers, the Daily Mail reports. Standard treatment consists of compression bandages, infection control and wound dressings. However, this only heals between 30 to 70 per cent of ulcers. While skin grafts have been used, this results in another wound at the site from which the transplanted skin is taken. IANS

Imran’s new ride I

mran Khan along with learning various dialects and getting familiar with the “bhai” character for his forthcoming film Once Upon A Time in Mumbai-sequel will now also learn to ride a Bullet. Imran is all geared up for the sequel of Milan Lutharia’s Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, and wants to make sure that there is no stone left unturned. Imran had learnt to ride a Bullet for his film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola and he uses the same skill in his next film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. As Imran plays a character of a “Bhai’ the scene would require him to chase his enemies. He would have to perform a chasing scene in the dark and narrow areas of Mumbai, for which he wants to learn to ride a bullet so that he can carry off the scene with absolute perfection. It took him about a week to handle a heavy duty 500 cc of the bullet. Imran learnt to ride this bullet in Film City. Imran is very much following his mamu’s footsteps in order to become a perfectionist. Not only this, he is visiting all the dark areas of Dharavi gaon to learn the body language and mannerisms of the local bhais. He is learning the Mumbaiya language so that he can carry off this character with absolute precision. Apart from this Imran also has learnt some Haryanvi for Matru Ki Bijlee ka Mandola, and will be continuing the same in Once upon a time in Mumbai 2. With all the hardwork Imran is putting in for his films, it seems that we are about to witness a different side of Imran very soon. A spokesperson confirms, “Imran will be riding a bullet in Once Upon A Time Again. It is really difficult to ride a Bullet as its one of the heaviest motorcycles in the bike category. He had learnt to ride a bullet in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola but in Milan’s Once upon A Time he will be mastering this talent. He used to practice riding the bullet in Film City very often. However, it took him about a week to get familiar with the heavy weight 500cc Bullet bike. Imran has worked really hard to master the riding skills to get everything right for this movie."

SHE JUST DOES NOT LEARN AMANDA BYNES

accused of third hit-andrun incident in 3 months

A

manda Bynes might want to consider hiring a driver. TMZ is reporting that a Los Angeles woman filed a police report on Saturday (August 4) claiming that the What I Like About You actress hit her car and then drove away without exchanging information. The incident marks Bynes’ third in just three months. Bynes was arrested on suspicion of DUI on April 6, to which she pled not guilty, and was then accused of hit-and-run accidents on May 5 and May 27. The other driver in the most recent accident says her Toyota Corolla was rear-ended by a black BMW, and she didn’t

recognise Bynes as the BMW driver at first because she “looked like a hot mess.” Once the pair began talking, however, the driver realised it was Bynes. She asked the 26-year-old actress to exchange information, but Bynes “seemed nervous about that.” After Bynes reportedly attempted to push the other driver’s bumper back into place, she got back in her car and drove off.The driver tells TMZ she called the police and filed a hitand-run incident report. When the driver told the officer who hit her, the officer allegedly replied, “Didn’t she just get a DUI?” No word from Bynes’ reps yet.

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Rim wins 69kg gold North Korea's R im Jong-Sim relied on her superior clean and jerk to win the women's-69kg class to give the nation its third gold in weightlifting LUKE PHILLIPS Agence France-Presse LONDON: North Korea's Rim Jong-Sim relied on her superior clean and jerk to win the women's -69kg class on Wednesday, the reclusive nation's third gold of the Olympic weighlifting competition. Rim, 19, recorded a combined total of 261kg after snatching 115kg and registering a best in the clean and jerk of 146kg. Romanian Roxana Cocos took silver with a total of 256kg (113, 143), with Belarus' Maryna Shkermankova claiming bronze with 256kg (113, 143). It was North Korea's third gold after title-winning performances by Kim Un-Guk and Om Yun-Chol in the men's -62 and 56kg classes respectively, while Ryang Chun-Hwa nabbed a bronze in the women's 48kg category. Rim, like Kim and Om, was quick to put her victory down to her communist homeland's late "Great Leader" Kim Jong-Il and his son and successor, "Great Comrade" Kim Jong-Un. future." In an exceptionally tight competition marred by the withdrawal through injury of Russia's world champion Oxana Slivenko, three lifters — Dzina Sazanavets of Belarus, Kazakh Anna Nurmukhambetova and Rim — all snatched 115kg. Cocos and Shkermankova lifted 113kg, and Armenian Mmeline Daluzyan and Colombian Ubaldina Valoyes were a further 2kg adrift. Meanwhile, Chinese weighlifting great Wang Mingjuan extended her incredible 10-year unbeaten record by totally dominating the field to win her maiden Olympic gold in the -48kg class on Saturday.

GOLDEN SLAM

Russian weightlifting coach Davyd Rigert defended the lastminute withdrawals of two of his gold medal favourites on Monday and insisted there was nothing sinister in the development. Just before the weigh-in for the 105kg contest took place, Russia withdrew 2011 world champion Khadzhimurat Akkaev and 2005 world champion Dmitriy Klokov. As a result, Ukraine's Oleksiy Torokhtiy ended up the shock winner with the lowest Olympic and world championship weight.

Wang's performance lifted spirits for a sport that was earlier sullied by a fresh doping offence, with the IOC kicking Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku out of the Games after testing positive for a banned steroid. Wang's gold medal ends one of the longest-running anomalies in women's weightlifting. Although the 26-year-old has dominated her scandaltainted sport for about a decade, she was mysteriously omitted from China's 2004 and 2008 Olympic teams, meaning she had not been able to challenge for the ultimate prize.

Britain end 60-year drought

NEWS BRIEFS

GB claimed the team show jumping gold for the first time in 60 years NICK REEVES Agence France-Presse LONDON: Great Britain claimed the Olympic Games team show jumping gold for the first time in 60 years on Monday after a gripping jump-off against the Netherlands at Greenwich Park. The head-to-head showdown was required to split the two teams after they had finished the competition in a tie for first with eight penalty points. Saudi Arabia, with 14 points, finished in the bronze medal position. This was only the London 2012 hosts’ second ever team title, and it came 60 years after the first in Helsinki, sending the Union Jack flagwaving capacity 23,000 crowd into raptures. Britain claimed gold when Peter Charles, the fourth rider to go in the jump off, held his nerve to go clear,

This was only the second time in Olympic history that a jump off was needed to determine the destination of the team title after the United States, tied for sixth on Monday, defeated Canada in Beijing four years ago. The British jumping team were going one better than their three-day eventing col-

Yang ‘vaults’ to victory The South Korean won the men’s vault final to hand the nation their first ever Olympic gold in the event LONDON: Yang Hak-Seon triumphed in the men’s vault final on Monday to hand South Korea their first ever Olympic gold medal in the event. Yang, 19, averaged 16.533 points with his two vaults at London’s North Greenwich Arena to leave Russia’s Denis Ablyazin with the silver medal and Igor Radivilov of Ukraine with bronze. Ablyazin leaves the Olympics with a silver and a bronze, having also finished third in Sunday’s floor final. Yang, the 2011 world vault champion, was the last man to compete in the final and despite a big step forward when he landed his first vault, the 7.400 difficulty rating was enough to earn him an opening score of 16.466. His second vault was even better, yielding a score of 16.600 and securing South Korea’s first Olympic medal in the men’s vault competition since Yeo Hong-Chul took silver at the Atlanta Games in 1996. Chile’s Tomas Gonzalez narrowly missed out on winning his country’s first ever gymnastics medal after finishing fourth, while Sam Mikulak of the United States was fifth. Meanwhile, Brazil’s Arthur

The home nation’s work at Greenwich is far from over, with Skelton joint top of the standings and favourite to land gold in the individual show jumping competition which concludes on Thursday. And they also have strong claims on the team and individual dressage titles. For the 54-year-old Skelton this success, his first Olympic medal of any hue, was coming at his sixth Games. He said: “It has taken me 54 years. It is unbelievable and what a place to do it. I have got a wonderful horse and it is a dream come true. “It is great for our country and great for our sport. The lads have done great,” added the rider. “It’s more special to win gold after lots of Olympics and lots of mistakes, and I couldn’t do it in a better place - without the crowd it wouldn’t have been possible,” he added.

Kenny beats Bauge to cycling sprint gold LONDON: Britain’s Jason Kenny claimed his first individual gold medal Monday when he stunned Frenchman Gregory Bauge 2-0 to win track cycling’s Olympic sprint title. Kenny, a 24-year-old from Bolton, was given the nod over defending champion Chris Hoy to defend Britain’s chances of sprint gold at his home Games after the rules were changed to limit each nation to one rider per event. Four years after finishing second to Hoy in Beijing, Kenny seized his opportunity with both hands. After his runner-up place to Bauge

It was no guarantee of victory, but it showed he had the finishing speed required against the fastest men on the track. Suhr overshadows Isinbayeva to win gold Suhr cleared 4.75m in the second attempt with only two women — Isinbayeva and Suhr herself having made the height at the Olympics before, in 2008. LUKE PHILLIPS Agence France-Presse LONDON: American Jennifer Suhr foiled Russian Yelena Isinbayeva’s (right) bid for a historic hat-trick of women’s pole vault titles by claiming a nipand-tuck Olympic competition in rainy conditions on Monday. Suhr eventually claimed gold after registering a best of 4.75 metres having come into the competition at 4.55m. “It’s really breathtaking, it’s emotional,” Suhr said. “When I warmed up I felt a little dead, but I fed off the crowd. “It takes a lot of strength and dedication and mental toughness.” Cuban Yarisley Silva claimed silver with 4.75m, a failed effort at her opening height of 4.45m see her cede the podium-topping spot on countback. champion Isinbayeva, also the world record holder with a massive 5.06m set in 2009, took bronze with a best of 4.70m and

immediately said she had put off plans to retire. “I think this bronze tells me ‘Yelena, don’t quit’, as I had

planned to do after London,” said Isinbayeva. “I’m really happy. It’s like a gold medal for me. There have been a lot of things which have been disappointing for three years. I’m just glad the Olympics are finished as they were so stressful.” The Russian had sailed over 4.65m to settle her nerves. She passed at 4.55m after botching her first effort, and watched on as Silva and then Silke Spiegelburg both cleared it.

Pearson defends Aussie act At the start of day four of track and field action, sporting powerhouse Australia sat a lowly 24th in the medals table with just one gold. JOHN WEAVER Agence France-Presse LONDON: World champion hurdler Sally Pearson (right) defended Australia’s performance at the Olympics on Monday as she started her quest to put her country back on the gold medal trail. Australian performance a far cry from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where they finished

sixth in the table with a bumper haul of 14 golds and 46 medals in total. Disappointing showings in cycling and swimming have hit their tally in London. But Pearson, who impressed in winning her heat for the women’s 100m hurdles, qualifying quickest in a time of 12.57sec, played down the lack of golds, saying it was “exciting in our camp at the moment”. “I think Australia’s

done bloody well in these Games. We’ve got 20 medals all up. Everyone wants a gold medal but what’s wrong with silver?” she asked. Pearson, whose gold medal in last year’s world championships was one of the stand-out performances of the event in South Korea, said she felt relaxed as she started her bid for Olympic gold. “I’m feeling really bizarre right now, “ she added.

Ostapchuk ends Adams’ golden run PIRATE IRWIN Agence France-Presse LONDON: Belarus’ Nadezhda Ostapchuk (above) won the women’s Olympic shot put title here on Monday with a throw of 21.36m to end the almost twoyear unbeaten run of defending champion Valerie Adams of New Zealand. The 31-year-old — the last person to beat Adams, in Lausanne on August 22, 2010 — collected the only title missing from her collection ahead of Adams, who took silver with 20.70m. Russia’s Yevgeniya Kolodko took bronze with a personal best of 20.48m. “I’m very happy at this moment,” said the current champion. “It’s my third Olympic Games and it’s a long way to get to this gold medal. My coach said that I must commit everything because my opponents were very strong.” Adams had had the worst possible run-in to the Games as an administrative error had seen her not even entered and New Zealand officials scrambling to rectify her omission. “I found it out yesterday,” said 27-year-old Adams.

Teenager James romps to historic 400m gold Kirani James become the first non-American winner of the event since 1980. LONDON: Teenager Kirani James (right) powered to gold in the men’s 400m on Monday to win Grenada’s first Olympic medal of any colour. James, 19, the reigning world champion, dominated the field, winning in 43.94sec. Luguelin Santos, also 19, of the Dominican Republic, took silver in 44.46sec while Trinidad and Tobago’s Lalonde Gordon took bronze. The Grenadan made his move in the final 150m, coming off the bend with a clear lead and never looked like being caught. His time was a new national record for the Caribbean island nation and he also became the first non-US athlete to dip under 44 seconds for the one-lap race. The United States has been utterly dominant in the race since Victor Markin, representing the former Soviet Union, won the event in the boycott-blighted 1980 Moscow Olympics, where the US did not compete.

SANCHEZ REGAINS TITLE

Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic stormed to victory in the men’s 400m hurdles Olympic title on Monday and then paid an emotional tribute to his late

South African 800m runner Caster Semenya is scheduled to make her Olympic debut on Wednesday, confident that her controversial victory in the 2009

world championships is a thing of the past. The 21-year-old, who is coached by 2000 Sydney Olympics 800m champion Maria Mutola from Mozambique, had to undergo drug tests followed by gender tests following that magnificent victory in Berlin. AFP

Thrown out of for not trying LONDON: Algerian medal contender Taoufik Makhloufi (above) has been thrown out of the London Olympics for the unusual offence of not trying hard enough in his 800m heat on Monday, an IAAF statement said. Makhloufi, who had qualified for 1500m final by winning his semi-final, ran in heat five of the first round of the 800m on Monday morning but failed to finish. “Makhloufi (bib number 1008) did not finish the race,” the statement said. “The referee considered that he had not provided a bona fide effort and decided to exclude him from participation in all further events under Rule 142.4.” An IAAF spokeswoman said the athlete could be reinstated with a medical certificate from a local doctor explaining he had an ailment.

Walk champ Schwazer admits doping Schwazer’s disqualification from the Games was a bitter blow, but the priority lay with ensuring that sport stays with a clean image rather than a stage for winning medals. ROME: Italy’s reigning 50km walk champion Alex Schwazer (right) admitted doping on Monday and said his career was over after he was withdrawn from the Olympics for failing a drugs test, leaving fans reeling.

“My career is over. I made a mistake,” Schwazer told ANSA news agency by telephone. “I wanted to be stronger for this Olympics, I was wrong.” Schwazer, 27, tested positive for the banned blood booster EPO during a test conducted by

the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) at a training camp in Oberstdorf, Germany, a source with knowledge of the case told AFP. “I had the utmost faith in him, but I feel like I’ve been taken for a ride,” Schwazer’s

coach, Michele Didoni, was quoted in the Italian media as saying. “I’ve been much more than a coach to him... but he didn’t deserve my trust,” he said, slamming Schwazer for immaturity and for letting so many people down. AFP

New Zealand’s most capped Test player was omitted from a 15-man squad for the two-Test tour of India beginning on August 23, along with underperforming batsman Dean Brownlie.
