Govt turns blind eye to roller hockey teams Sudeshna Koka sudeshna.k@postnoon.com
KVP works his magic, Chiru to be another Congressman
F
ew people in the city are even aware of the fact that we are currently hosting roller hockey matches. The inter-state competition that has teams from Vizag, Karimnagar and Hyderabad got off to a flying start with a senior women’s match between Karimnagar and Hyderabad on Tuesday. The team from Karimnagar won by one goal. But despite the enthusiasm on behalf of the players, there were barely 50 people in the audience. Roller hockey might enjoy a better popularity across the country, but in Andhra Pradesh it is barely acknowledged. For Hyderabadis, cricket still rules and other sports are relegated to the back burner. However, this lack of interest does not deter the players. “It’s our own interest and passion for this sport that drives us here. We have no support from the government in any way. In Hyderabad, many people are not even aware of this sport. It’s only our family and friends who come to watch the match and support us,” says Priyanka B, a national level player. There are more than 900 roller hockey players in the city who have won several national championships. However, these players are self-supported and have no sponsorships whatsoever. Even the government of AP does not support them. Despite hockey being con-

ferred the title of national sport, there is no denying that it doesn’t play well for one to become a professional player in the country. Until 2003 the government gave each national player Rs 1165, but today they get nothing but a certificate. “Ten years ago, we had only eight teams from four districts but now we have 43 teams from 16 districts. Despite our players placing AP on the national hockey scene, we have no support from the government,” says Naveen Tataipala, joint secretary, Roller Hockey Technician Association. Parents and teachers feel that this sport lacks awareness and support in Hyderabad.
Cyclist mowed down by truck dies
“There are so many students who get admission in good colleges because of this certificate. However, the State government seems to turn a blind eye to this. Players buy their own kit, uniform and spend from their own pocket for travelling and accommodation. Most players have to rely on their families to support them. But those who can’t are forced to let go of their dreams of becoming national level players,” says Anitha T, a parent. Despite the stadia for roller hockey being maintained well, it is the players who don’t get their due or encouragement of any sort. “In the last budget, Rs
6 cores was sanctioned to the ministry of sports. But ironically most of the money was used by the politician to build stadia for their personal gains and nothing was spent on the players,” says a member of the roller skater association of AP. “In the last 14 years that I have been playing this sport, not once has the government done anything to support us. We travel to other cities to play and it is all at our own expense. There is no encouragement at all. We bring name and fame to the State but in return we don’t even get a token of appreciation,” laments Aarti Attal, captain, Karimnagar senior women’s team.
IGNORANCE IS BLISS

HYDERABAD: A cyclist was run over by a speeding truck in Jubilee Hills today Wednesday morning. K Narayana Reddy, 62, was a resident of BS Makhta and worked as a security guard. The truck went over his head and Narayana died on the spot. The truck driver, Yadav was taken into custody by the Jubilee Hills Police. A case has been registered under Section 304 A of IPC (causing death by injuries).

HYDERABAD: While everyone is crediting Chiranjeevi with standing by the Congress in the need of the hour, it was the political dexterity of KVP Ramachandra Rao, a confidante of the late YSR, that actually rescued the party from sinking in the political storm. KVP, as he is popularly known, began playing his cards much before Chandrababu Naidu announced his decision to move the no-confidence motion. A senior Congress leader, on the condition of anonymity, said that KVP had marshalled all his resources to negotiate with several legislators. He not only roped in almost 10 MLAs from the Jagan camp, he also prevented the crossover by a few other legislators. But for KVP’s timely control, at least four MLAs from Chittoor district, the native district of Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, were ready to switch sides to Jagan’s camp. “If KVP was not pressed into action, strength of Jagan’s group would have swollen to 38 and Chiranjeevi could not have saved us,” a source close to the APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana told Postnoon. Meanwhile, speculation is rife on Chiranjeevi’s future. Some say he would be accommodated at the Centre. A former aide of Chiru felt that he would be playing sixth or seventh fiddle to the Congress leadership. Substantiating his derisive remark, he said: “Chiranjeevi will not be equated with Kiran Kumar Reddy, Botsa, Jaipal Reddy, Jairam Ramesh or Rosaiah and even Marri Sashidhar Reddy. At the most, he will be treated on a par with Purandeswari or Pallam Raju (Union Ministers of State). Once the formality of merger completes, Chiranjeevi will be another Congressman.

NGOs’ support crucial for helmet awareness Osama Salman and D Sree Charan feedback@postnoon.com

oluntary organisations and NGOs can go a long way in creating awareness about certain important issues. Taken that 90 per cent of bike accidents involve bikers sans helmet, the awareness about the use of helmet is minimal. Traffic police believe they are not getting enough support from civil and social organisations. “Not even a single NGO has approached us for helping with the campaign of promoting the importance of wearing a helmet. Even WHO has identified Hyderabad as one of the two cities where most fatal accidents take place involving

have succeeded in curbing the menace to a large extent. However, even WHO has taken a step back in promoting the helmet rule as our past shows how reluctant and negligent our leaders and people are,” said a disappointed CV Anand, Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic). “Our only saviour now is social networking sites like Facebook. Using this as a platform, we have been posting all the information and data that we have on accidents and the importance of wearing a helmet on our webpage. In all other aspects, the general public is showing a great interest and are actively participating in our campaigns like drinkdriving and rash driving, but when it comes to helmets, we
hardly receive any response,” he added. NGOs seem to be too busy promoting other ‘important’ causes such as education, trafficking, rehabilitation etc. “Often, NGOs are too busy highlighting other issues. Maybe such a subject slips by them or maybe they are unaware of its gravity. But the power is vested with such organisations to take up a cause and make a difference. It is about realising that,” said general secretary of an NGO. “Even if all the NGOs and student organisations made this the focal point, it will not help the cause. Only when people realise the importance of wearing helmets will anything happen,” said Bushra Ahmed, a social activist.

Fear of failure drove EFLU student to suicide Postnoon News
A
PhD student at the English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself in his room. Balaji, a native of Chirala district, locked himself in his room on Monday evening and refused to respond to any calls. “He had been very upset since Saturday as he had not performed well in his NET Exam. He was supposed to meet me on Monday but he refused to answer my calls. Finally on Tuesday afternoon I alerted his friends,”says his girlfriend. Balaji had allegedly been depressed for some time due to the constant pressure by his dad to get a government job. He had attempted the NET exams thrice and had failed to clear it. This drove him to take the extreme step. A case has been booked under section 174 and the body was shifted to Osmania Hospital for autopsy.

The Union communications minister Kapil Sibal’s directive to popular social networking sites, Facebook, Google and Yahoo to disallow derogatory and hateful postings has found not many takers in Hyderabad. Facebook and Twitter have become the hubs of discussions over a wide range of issues including current affairs, politics, media and movies among many other things. Yet, the government doesn’t seem to have a clue about how information is shared and opinions formed on the internet. However, Kapil’s suggestion to screen the content before uploading has received some support. “A lot of people use

ment playing Big Brother. “It is impractical and unrealistic to pre-screen all the content posted on social networking sites. I think Kapil Sibal should realise that there are laws that exist for cyber-crimes,” says Deepak Karamungikar, a corporate communications manager. But some see it as a diversionary tactic of the Congress. “This is abuse of power and democracy more than anything else. There are far more important issues that need to be addressed than this,” says Anuj Gurwara, a singer. Actor Kamal Kamaraju echoes a similar opinion and adds, “The government cannot decide what’s good or bad. People are intelligent enough to understand that and if someone indeed crosses the line then strict action should be taken. But if the government has its way, it will not stop here.” “The botched up priorities of this government are out in the open again. There are already laws in place which deal with inflaming hatred in the country. Why is the government eager to play big brother? Is there more to it than meets the eye?” questions S Sudhir Kumar, an engineer. The timing of this issue being raked up by Kapil Sibal is being seen as a carefully planned move to sabotage Anna Hazare’s movement which got massive support on these sites. “Sibal, you cannot control social media content like you and your party have been doing for a long time on some of the TV channels,” Nimit Jain, an analyst from an MNC, tells the minister. 39879999 27567892 23559555 23226624 27633087 27035588 27550238 30799999 30418296 30417445

Internet flak makes Centre see red, plan gag measures NEW DELHI: In a move netizens fear is tantamount to censorship, the Indian government has directed social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to filter out “objectionable” content from their websites. It warned of suo motu action if this was not done. The decision was conveyed during a meeting communications and IT minister Kapil Sibal held here on Monday evening with the India representatives of sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Microsoft. “Religious sentiments of many communities and of any reasonable persons is being hurt because of content which is on the sites,” Sibal told reporters here on Tuesday, explaining what the government considered “objectionable” content. “Nobody minds satirical images of any public personality but if you show a certain form of me, this is not acceptable. Even individuals should be protected,” the minister said, adding he had first raised the issue with social networking sites on September 5. But confusion remained on what constitutes “objectionable” or, for that matter, who will decide what is tantamount to “hurting” religious sentiments or an individual’s personal integrity and privacy. All
Religious sentiments of many communities and of any reasonable persons is being hurt because of content which is on the sites Kapil Sibal, IT minister that officials said was that they will come up with guidelines. “They will have to give us data. Then, there will be action taken. We will ask them to give information. Allow us time to deal with it. One thing is sure: We will not allow this kind of objectionable content,” Sibal said. The representatives of these sites pointed out that there was both the issue of what is tantamount to “objectionable” and the sheer logistical nightmare in screening every bit of content that is posted on the sites. They, however, said they did have checks. “We will remove any content that violates our terms, which are designed to keep material
that is hateful, threatening, incites violence or contains nudity off the service,” said Facebook in a statement issued Tuesday. “We recognise the government’s interest in minimising the amount of abusive content that is available online and will continue to engage with the Indian authorities,” the firm, which has one of the largest number of users in India, added. Google said there was a need to differentiate between what was controversial and what was illegal, adding that anything that what went against statute was removed by their team, including content that

went against their strict terms and conditions. “But it also means that when content is legal but controversial we don’t remove it because people’s differing views should be respected, so long as they are legal,” a Google spokesperson said. According officials, during the September 5 meeting, some pictures were shown off the record, which purportedly depicted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi in “bad light”, while in some others, it “insulted” various religions. “They orally agreed. But not in writing,” Sibal said referring to the responses of those who attended the meeting. “They neither provided a solution, nor removed such content. They said they will take any action only if the ministry comes out with court orders.” Even as Sibal sought to clarify the government position and was at pains to explain that the move was not intended at any form of censorship on the net, netizens were caustic about the move. “Sibal was wrong on the 2G scam wit his ‘zero loss’ theory. He is very wrong in trying to bring to India the Chinese model of controlling Internet,” said Rajiv Chandrasekhar, an industrialist and MP. “Doomed IANS to fail!”

Death awaits bootleggers in Gujarat AHMEDABAD: A Bill which proposes capital punishment for those found guilty of manufacturing or selling spurious liquor which results in death has received assent from Gujarat Governor Kamla. The Governor has given her assent to the Bombay Prohibition (Gujarat Amendment) Bill 2009, which tightens the liquor prohibition laws. Gujarat is a dry state where liquor prohibition has been enforced since Independence. “Yes, Governor has given her consent for the Bill. She had once sent the Bill back to the state assembly,” Law Minister Dilip Sanghani said. The Bill was originally passed by the Assembly on July 28, 2009, in the wake of the worst hooch tragedy in Gujarat where over 130 people were killed in the same month. The Governor had returned the Bill to the Assembly on November 11, 2011, asking the government to do a rethink on death penalty provision in the law. However, the Assembly passed the Bill again and sent it back for the Governor’s approval. After the hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad, the Narendra Modi government, under attack from various quarters, had announced that it would amend the state’s prohibition law. The amended law has the provision of death penalty for manufacturing or selling hooch provided the consumption of the said hooch results in any death. PTI
Poll panel favours right to reject candidates SHILLONG: The Election Commission favours the “right to reject” candidates to do away with criminals, a poll panel official said on Tuesday. “The Election Commission welcomes the ‘right to reject’ but not the ‘right to recall’ as it would bring political instability and hamper developmental activities,” Election Commissioner HS Brahma said. He said that the commission had proposed to the government in December 2001 to introduce a button on the EVM so that voters could exercise ‘none of the above’ option. “A proposal for debarring
candidates against whom charges have been framed by a court of law for heinous crimes from contesting elections has already been sent to the government way back in 1998 and the same is at an advanced stage of consideration by the government,” Brahma said. However, he disfavoured the proposal to allow the voters to recall candidates they were unsatisfied with. “Right to recall is next to impossible because of various implications involved in frequent elections and repeated imposition of the model code of conduct,” IANS Brahma maintained.

Panel for PM under Lokpal, with riders NEW DELHI: In a significant change of mind, the Parliamentary Committee has recommended inclusion of Prime Minister within the ambit of Lokpal with some safeguards along with two other options and left it to the “good sense” of Parliament to decide on the final choice. The Committee, however, favoured keeping out judiciary, MPs' conduct in Parliament and Group C and D employees at the Centre out of the ambit of Lokpal while recommending inclusion of C and D employees of the states under Lokayuktas. The Parliamentary Committee on Personnel and Law and Justice which will meet tomorrow for adoption of the 199page report has decided not change the present system of appointment of CBI Director. In a new recommendation, the Committee has favoured 50
per cent reservation to members of SC/ST, OBC, minorities and women in the seven-member Search Panel for choosing a Lokpal and to make the Search Panel mandatory.
Pawar cover for corrupt ‘an old habit’: Hazare
It also favours inclusion of Chief Ministers under the state Lokayuktas and if the report is accepted then the Bill should be named as Lokpal/Lokayukta Bill, 2011. The recommendation for inclusion of prime minister excluding his decisions on national security, foreign affairs, atomic energy and space along with issues which come under “national interest” and “public order” marks a change from the earlier draft which was silent on the issue. While members of parties belonging to BJP, BJD and the Left were insisting on inclusion of PM, those belonging to the Congress and some small parties, constituting a majority in the 30-member committee, were either opposed to it or were in favour only after he demits office.
protesting colleagues have announced that they will commit mass self-immolation outside the house of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in Chandigarh on Thursday. Though the police booked the assaulter, who belongs to the ruling Akali Dal, he was charged with only causing hurt and wrongful restraint — both bailable offences — and continued to roam free on Tuesday and refused to apologise. Sarpanch Balwinder Singh slaps Barinder Pal Kaur
NEW DELHI: Social activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday accused agriculture minister Sharad Pawar of protecting corrupt people who will have to be tried for graft once the Lokpal institution is in place. Hazare posted on his blog that it was Pawar’s “old habit” to support and protect the corrupt, and listed instances when he had to resort to movements to get justice for people. “Sharad Pawar has an old habit of keeping the company of corrupt people. The politicians got so angry with that one slap that many buses were burnt, national property was destroyed, many shops were damaged, many private vehicles were damaged — but this did not make anyone angry. This is unfortunate,” Hazare said. "For the betterment of the society and the country, I have used strong words many times in the past. ‘Just
One Slap?’ — I admit that I committed violence when I said that. But for the betterment of society, I do not consider this violence as wrong.” “Many politicians felt very bad about the slapping incident. Many of them got very angry also. But it is important to discuss as to why did that youth slap,” he said. “What this young man did was wrong — there are no two opinions about it. And I have also condemned IANS it," he added.

Arabic pamphlet scare in Goa flight PANAJI: A pamphlet published in Arabic found on Tuesday in a chartered plane which flew from Manchester airport in Britain to Goa has triggered a security alarm here. The alert comes less than two weeks before Prime Minister Mamohan Singh's visit to Goa and a day after the State government formally announced that there was specific intelligence input about a possible terror strike in Goa. The PM is likely to visit the
state December 18 to participate in the celebrations of Goa's 50th anniversary of liberation from the Portuguese rule. While officials are completely tight-lipped about the incident, sources in the Airports Authority of India, Goa, said the pamphlet was found by the crew of the Manchester-Goa chartered flight which was carrying 219 passengers, most of whom were tourists from Britain on a twoweek holiday to Goa.
"The pamphlet which is in Arabic was found in the aisle after the passengers exited and the crew were readying for a return journey," sources said. The contents of the pamphlet are not clear yet, with no official commenting on the nature of the writing on it. After a formal statement on terror threat was issued by the State government on Monday, home minister Ravi Naik confirmed a specific terror input on PTI Goa on Tuesday.

Can’t take Pak on India nuke honeymoon: Oz MELBOURNE/NEW DELHI: Backing the ruling Labour Party’s decision to export uranium to India, Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith Tuesday rejected a similar deal for Pakistan and said he looked forward to his visit to India that will focus on expanding maritime security between the two countries. “India brought itself under the governance of the international nuclear regulators, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Nuclear Suppliers Group,” Smith said, hours before leaving for New Delhi. “That has not occurred with Pakistan. There has never been a suggestion of (nuclear) proliferation from India,” he said amid Islamabad’s assertion that Canberra should export uranium to Islamabad as New Delhi has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty. “Regrettably, over preceding years, there have been serious concerns about proliferation from Pakistan,” he said This is the first ministerial visit from Australia since the Labor Party reversed its ban on uranium exports to India. Smith underlined that the uranium export decision reflected India’s global stand-
Regrettably, over preceding years, there have been serious concerns about proliferation from Pakistan ing, and predicted it would become “one of the world’s three great powers”, along with the US and China. Smith hoped that Pakistan would understand the decision and stressed that it would not affect military ties between the two nations.
“Pakistan would understand the decision and that it would not affect military ties between the two nations, especially in cooperation in the war in Afghanistan,” he said. “I don’t see this decision as having an adverse outcome, so far as the Australia-Pakistan relationship is concerned.” “Nor do I see it in any way as being relevant to suitability in South Asia. We have a very good military-to-military and defence-to-defence relationship with Pakistan,” he said. In Mumbai, he will visit the Western Naval Command and address the Asia Society India
Centre on building the strategic partnership between Australia and India. In a statement before leaving for India, Smith said his talks will “take forward our shared strategic and security interests, including maritime security, cooperation in the Indian Ocean, and regional security.” “I will discuss opportunities to expand defence cooperation activities that build on the 2009 joint declaration on security cooperation,” he said. Under the declaration, Australia and India affirmed their shared desire to promote regional and global security, as well as their common commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law. India is the current chair and Australia the vice chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) Smith’s visit takes place days after India snubbed a proposal attributed to Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, but was later denied by him, for a trilateral security pact between the US, Australia and India. WASHINGTON: The United States opened a virtual online embassy on Tuesday to reach out to Iranians despite the absence of official ties, vowing to break through the Islamic regime’s electronic curtain.” Iranian authorities have already voiced anger over the virtual embassy, accusing the United States of seeking to interfere in the country after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced plans for the project in October. The virtual embassy, accessible at http://iran.usembassy.gov/, offers US policy statements in English and Farsi, information on US visas, news from US-funded Voice of America and links to share views via social media.
In a welcome message on the website, Clinton voiced hope that the platform would provide a way for Americans and Iranians to communicate “openly and without fear.” “Because the United States and Iran do not have diplomatic relations, we have missed some important opportunities for dialogue with you, the citizens of Iran,” she said in a video message. “But today, we can use new technologies to bridge that gap and promote greater understanding between our two countries, and the peoples of each country, which is why we established this virtual embassy,” she said. The US officials invested in the website in hopes that it could with-

stand a cyber-attack. “We think we have the technical capability to get it back up even if it gets disrupted, and we’re committed to doing everything we can to make sure the information gets through,” State Department number three Wendy Sherman said. Sherman, introducing the website at a Washington news conference, said the US was seeking dialogue with ordinary Iranians despite “very strong differences” with the government. “The regime has tried to impose an electronic curtain by disrupting cell phones, the Internet and social media,” said Sherman, the under secretary of state for political affairs.

Britain’s veto to block revised Lisbon Treaty?
D
avid Cameron has threatened to wield Britain’s veto to block a revision of the Lisbon Treaty if fellow European leaders refuse to protect the position of the City of London at the EU summit in Brussels . In a marked hardening of his rhetoric, as Eurosceptic Tories called for a recasting of Britain’s relationship with the EU, the prime minister said he would not sign any treaty that failed to provide safeguards for Britain’s financial services.
David Cameron hardens his rhetoric on proposed revisions to the Lisbon treaty The prime minister spoke out as Kenneth Clarke, the veteran pro-European justice secretary, told Eurosceptic Tories that they should abandon any hope of repatriating powers to Britain at this week’s EU summit. “No, we’re not going to renegotiate any transfers of powers, in my opinion,”stated Clarke. The intervention by Clarke on the eve of a crucial EU summit, which is designed to stabilise the eurozone, will irritate Eurosceptic Tories who believe that the prime minister is failing to do enough to protect British interests. But the substance of Clarke’s remarks tallied with the prime minister. The justice secretary agreed with the prime minister that Britain should use this week’s summit to try and secure the position of the City of London. He said Britain should accept “proper” financial regulation from Brussels, though he rejected the idea of a financial transaction tax. “It’s the devil’s own job to collect,” he said. The PM echoed Clarke’s view, though he used tougher language as he sought to reassure Tory Eurosceptics.

Logjam over FDI ends Parliament to function NEW DELHI: The deadlock in Parliament over the government’s decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the retail sector ended on Wednesday after an all-party meeting passed a resolution to suspend the move till consensus is reached. Leaders of political parties emerging out of the meeting said Parliament would function and they had agreed on the government’s decision to suspend foreign investment in retail. The Parliament had come to a grinding halt with the Opposition stalling the proceedings almost every day over the government’s decision to open up FDI in multibrand retail.

the Government had given an assurance, that the issue would be discussed with the political parties, businessmen, farming community and others before taking a final decision.
“I believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share, and when everyone plays by the same rules,” Obama said. “Those aren’t Democratic or Republican values; 1 per cent values or 99 per cent values. They’re American values, and we have to reclaim them.” Before an audience that constantly interrupted him with applause, the pres-
ident outlined the pillars of his economic policy, which he defended as logical as opposed to some proposals by the Republican opposition that have “never worked”. “But this isn’t just another political debate. This is the defining issue of our time. This is a make or break moment for the middle class, and all those who are fighting to get into the middle class,” he said.

The main window depicts the resonator of the Veena is Tansen singing Raag Deepak. The series of windows show various instances of Tansen’s life. Veena is completely made up of sandalwood and known for its fluid patterns. Mahesh, an award- winning artist, crafted the sandalwood Pankha. The store has put wide range of handicrafts, designer jewellery on display sourced from various places.
ninor, a leading GSM service provider in the state, completed two years in operations. With the ‘pay less and talk more’ concept, Uninor has been moving ahead in the business. Satish Kumar Kannan, business head of Uninor, AP circle, said that as a brand “we are here to do much more than just a telecom service. In less than two years of commercial operations, Uninor has become a preferred brand to over 2.8 million people across the state,” he said. The telco covers 750 towns 3,000 villages in the state, he said in an interview to Postnoon.
Excerpts: When will Uninor move to 3G services, while other players are talking about 4G? Yes, we did not bid for 3G. I can tell you no one is moving ahead on the 3G issue. I can tell you that we are far away from the 3G. We are a highly voiceoriented market. There will be no change on account of 3G. What is the turnover of Uninor in AP? How are you gearing up to take the competition? We will expand for sure, and continue to offer more value to customers with correct positioning. The footfalls in the stores are also going up. We are rolling out more stores as well. We are working on the financial front and will announce the
numbers soon. Out of the `100 revenue of SMS and GPRS, `6 to `7 comes from the data. India is high on voice. How are you handling the call drop problem in dark spots? There are dark spots. A lot of construction activity is going on in the city. Some positioning in terms of infrastructure is needed to arrest the situation. We are looking at it and we are addressing it in a phased manner. What is the expansion plan? There are 86 Uninor exclusive stores with presence in over 360 modern outlets. The company has plans to increase the exclusive stores to 100 by the year-end. What is your market share in Andhra Pradesh currently and where do you position the company in the next one year? We are steadily growing. We are building the market share by winning the confidence of customers apart from giving more value for the money.

Valbuena strike sends OM through

No blues for Chelsea
C
helsea avoided the unthinkable as Andre Villas-Boas sacrificed his ideals for a place in the Champions League knockout phase with a 3-0 victory over Valencia. With the Blues in danger of crashing out of Europe's premier club competition before Christmas for the first time, manager Villas-Boas abandoned the cavalier tactics that have been the hallmark of his reign in what was the club's final Group E game. The counter-attacking approach paid off spectacularly as Chelsea emerged from the brink of elimination to top the group thanks to a brace from the outstanding Didier Drogba, a goal from Ramires and Bayer Leverkusen's failure to win at Genk. That meant the Blues avoided a last-16 clash with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid,
Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, although they would gladly have taken that ahead of a game Villas-Boas had repeatedly billed as "life or death". Inside three minutes, Daniel Sturridge picked out Juan Mata at the far post and the Spaniard squared to Drogba, who was given an age to fire left-footed beyond Diego Alves. Valencia twice went close to levelling inside the opening 10 minutes when Jordi Alba crashed a shot against the outside of the post and Petr Cech clawed David Albelda's blockbuster away from the top corner. Villas-Boas' muchmaligned defence was hardly looking secure but the pressure was suddenly relieved midway through the half when Valencia produced an absolute howler in their own rearguard. Drogba's pass looked too heavy for Ramires but the
Brazilian brushed off the feeblest of challenges from Victor Ruiz before slotting underneath the stranded Alves. The pattern continued after half-time, with Sturridge going close again on the counter before Valencia brought on Aritz Aduriz and changed from a 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2 formation. A goal for the Spaniards was all that was needed to set nerves jangling again and Cech got a crucial punch to Tino Costa's crossed free-kick before springing sideways to repel Sofiane Feghouli's goalbound drive. With 14 minutes remaining, Drogba poked the ball past Alves with the outside of his right foot for his fourth goal in the last four games, before Cech produced another excellent reaction save to keep out Aduriz's header after Fernando Torres replaced Drogba.
athieu Valbuena's late winner sealed a stunning comeback from Marseille in a 3-2 win against Borussia Dortmund to book the French side's place in the last 16 of the Champions League. OM looked to be heading for the Europa League as they trailed 2-0 to the Germans at half-time while Olympiakos — just a point behind Marseille at kick-off — were in the process of comfortably beating a belowpar Arsenal 3-1 in Greece. Jakub Blaszczykowski and Mats Hummels put Dortmund in front at the break but Loic Remy and Andre Ayew drew Marseille level before Valbuena snatched second place for his side in the most dramatic of circumstances. Olympiakos — who must now settle for a place in the Europa League — led 2-0
through Rafik Djebbour and David Fuster but Yossi Benayoun reduced the deficit before Francois Modesto wrapped up victory for the hosts. With qualification from Group G already assured, APOEL Nicosia fell to their first loss and handed eliminated opponents Shakhtar Donetsk their first win, with a 2-0 success for the Ukrainians in Cyprus. Luiz Adriano and Evhen Seleznev scored in the second half for Shakhtar, but despite the defeat APOEL still progressed as group winners after Zenit St Petersburg battled out the goalless draw they required at FC Porto to join them in progressing. With Group H already decided, reigning champions Barcelona strolled to a 4-0 win over BATE Borisov with two goals for Pedro including a second-half penalty, and a goal each for Sergi Roberto and Martin Montoya. Europa League-bound Viktoria Plzen fought back for a dramatic 2-2 draw against runnersup AC Milan. Alexandre Pato and Robinho put the Italians in front before Plzen scored two in the last two minutes from David Bystron and Michal Duris. Andre Villas-Boas' Chelsea claimed an emphatic 3-0 win over Valencia to march into the last 16 as winners of Group E.
Arsenal outgunned by Olympiakos A
rsenal ended their Champions League Group F campaign with a 3-1 defeat at Olympiakos — but the Greeks missed out on the knockout stages.Defensive lapses again proved costly as the English side trailed 2-0 at the break. Rafik Djebbour slotted home a loose ball on 16 minutes, before substitute goalkeeper Vito Mannone — on for the injured Lukasz Fabianski — made a hash of his clearance as David Fuster
made it 2-0 on 36 minutes. Yossi Benayoun slotted home a consolation on 57 minutes before Francois Modesto secured victory with a minute left. However, with Marseille producing a late rally to win at Borussia Dortmund, it was not enough to see the Greeks through to the last 16. Olympiacos had the lead on 16 minutes when Andrey Arshavin failed to break after a quick throw from Fabianski.
The ball was worked back up to Fuster, with neither Johan Djourou nor Sebastien Squillaci able to cut out the Spaniard's first-time pass. That released Djebbour into the left side of the Arsenal penalty box, where he rounded the keeper to slot in from a tight angle. Fabianski had to be carried off on a stretcher after 25 minutes, replaced by 23-year-old Italian Mannone — whose last appearance was on loan at Hull in April.
And Mannone's blunder handed Olympiakos a second on 36 minutes. Arsenal pulled a goal back on 57 minutes when substitute Ignasi Miquel's floated cross was chested down by Marounae Chamakh and Benayoun lashed the ball into the far corner. However, with Marseille producing a late rally to win 3-2 in Germany, it was not enough for the Greek side to advance to the knockout phase.

Fun and frolic in a flat world
14
Convicts turn to an unusual hobby T he male convicts at the Pre-release Unit in Jessup, Maryland, have a unique story to tell. A story of how they found peace and calm through an unusual activity – knitting. Unusual, because it hardly seems normal to picture a bunch of rough-looking guys sporting tattoos and several teeth missing, sitting quietly, occupied with knitting needles and a bunch of wool. And yet, it’s true, thanks to the efforts of Lynn Zwerling, the founder of Knitting Behind Bars. 67 year-old Zwerling retired from her job of selling
cars in 2005, and then turned her attention to knitting, which was her passion. Initially, she started off with a small knitting group of women in her town. The group grew quickly to around 500 members. According to Zwerling, she observed something Zen-like when she saw women who did not have anything in common sitting quietly beside each other, absorbed in their knitting. She then had the idea to take knitting to prisons. At first she was turned down by wardens under the pretext that men would never be
interested in a feminine hobby like knitting. In 2009, she found Jessup, when the Pre-Release Unit accepted her program. These were the beginnings of Knitting Behind Bars. Quite naturally, the male prisoners were initially reluctant to take up classes with Zwerling, However, after her 5-minute knitting class, they were hooked. They now attend class once a week from 5 to 7 pm. They began by knitting dolls, which were given away to children who lost their families due to domestic issues. The men then went on to
knit hats and scarves. Richy Horton, one of the ex-inmates of the Pre-Release Unit recounts his experience with the knitting classes. “People really can’t understand that in prison you’re completely separated from anything normal or real in the world. You’re always told what to do and when to do it, so to have people come in and treat you like a human being means so much. They came in and
they were like my mom.”After his release he contiues to be in touch with KBB He says that the women of KBB – Lynn Zwerling, Sheila Rovelstad and Lea Heris – are not like normal people. In the words of Horton, “They’re almost like saints.” It sure does take a lot of courage to be able to go up to prisoners and teach them something such as knitting, with love, kindness and respect.
‘Yukigassen’ : Battling it All for the ‘perfect view’ out in the snow ! T
Y
ukigassen, literally meaning ‘snow battle’, originated around 20 years ago as a marketing scheme. The Mount Showa-Shinzan resort wanted to attract more tourists in the winter, so they devised this game, which certainly sounds like it could be a lot of fun. It is being described as a combination of chess, paintball and backyard brawling. The objective of the game is pretty simple. Players of the opposing team need to be knocked out with snowballs. But of course, there are more technicalities involved. For instance, the field on which Yukigassen is played is a 44 X 12 yard rectangle divided by red and blue lines, similar to the layout of a hockey rink. Three periods, three minutes in dura-
tion each, constitute the match. The team that wins two out of three is ultimately the winner of the match. A period could either be won by having more stand-
ing players than the team at the opposite end, or by capturing the other team’s flag without getting hit by their snowballs. Currently, there are over 2,000 Yukigassen teams in Japan alone. The sport is gaining momentum worldwide too, especially in the United States. In fact, the 2011 US National Championship was held in Anchorage, Alaska, and the Canadian Championship in Edmonton, Alberta. Shippagan, New . At this rate, it may not be long before Yukigassen becomes a part of the Winter Olympics!
he Fairview Wine and Cheese farm in South Africa is famous for more than just its wine and cheese. Owned and run by Charles Back, it houses a unique monument built for the comfort and use of the farm’s goats – The Goat Tower. Acknowledging the fact that goats love to climb, sometimes even up on livestock, to get a better view, Back first got the idea of the tower some thirty years ago. The tower, a first of its kind, consists of a steep metal roof. It also has a spiral staircase made of wood, and windows too.
The goats in Fairview farm can climb the two-story tower and rest within it. Since 1981, the tower has become a symbol of the winery. They thus also produce a wine called “Goats do Roam”. The goat tower is by far, the first known to be built with such a purpose in mind. However, according to Back, the tower was inspired by a similar one his parents had seen during a vacation in Portugal. As a result of that trip, goats were purchased, and the tower was built. The goat tower brings visitors to the farm regularly . Some visitors who had been there as kids, bring their own children to see the tower.

Research advances breast reconstruction
B
Plasma-based treatment goes viral L
ife-threatening viruses such as HIV, SARS, hepatitis and influenza, could soon be combated in an unusual manner as researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of plasma for inactivating and preventing the replication of adenoviruses. When exposed to plasma — the fourth state of matter in addition to solids, liquids and gases — for a period of just 240 seconds, it was found that only one in a million viruses could still replicate — practically all were inactivated. The study, published in IOP Publishing's Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, is one of the first to concentrate specifically on viruses and builds on research that has already shown the usefulness of plasma in eradicating bacteria from
skin and sterilising water. Within a hospital environment, a plasma generating device could realistically rid hands of potentially lethal viruses that relay on a host organism to replicate and spread. In the long-term, plasma could be inhaled directly to treat viruses in the lungs, or applied to blood outside of the body to remove any viruses before transfusion. The researchers, from the Max-Planck Institut für extraterrestrische Physik and Technische Universität München, specifically chose adenoviruses to examine as they are one of the most difficult viruses to inactivate. Illnesses resulting from this specific virus, for example, can only be managed by treating symptoms and complications
of the infection, rather than targeting the actual virus itself. Adenoviruses predominantly cause respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia and bronchitis and are hard to inactivate as the whole virus is encased in a protein layer, helping it to remain physically stable and tolerate moderate increases in heat and pH. In this study, the adenoviruses were diluted to specific concentrations and then exposed to plasma for 240 seconds, before being incubated for an hour. A control group of
adenoviruses were given the exact same treatment apart from the plasma exposure. Two separate cell lines were then infected with the two sets of adenoviruses: the ones that were treated with plasma and the control group. To test whether a cell had the virus or not, the researchers programmed the virus to produce a protein that fluoresced green when a specific type of light was shone onto it. Whilst the exact mechanisms behind the plasma's impressive effects are relatively unknown, it is thought that they are a result of a combination of reactions between the plasma and surrounding air, which create similar species to the ones found in our own immune system when under microbial attack.
reast reconstruction surgery will become both safer and more realistic thanks to research led by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. Professor Dietmar W Hutmacher from QUT's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) recently conducted a research project in collaboration with engineers and surgeons in Singapore and Germany, which used computer aided design (CAD) to produce moulds accurately modelled on a laser scan of a patient's healthy breast. Surgeons successfully used the moulds during three tissue reconstruction operations. "Previously the surgeon would do everything by eye and feel. With the mould they have a physical template to check out the exact shape and tissue volume needed for the reconstruction surgery," Professor Hutmacher said. The three patients taking part in the study reported higher levels of satisfaction with the surgery results than those in a control group. While these moulds have proven to be useful in surgery where tissue is taken from a patient's own body, for example, their abdomen, Professor Hutmacher is now developing the technology so that it can allow for breast tissue engineering. The CAD which created the moulds has also been used to create biodegradable 3D scaffolds, on which a patient's own tissue could be grown.
Flexible workplaces promote better health behaviour and well-being
A
flexible workplace initiative improved employees' health behaviour and well-being, including a rise in the amount and quality of sleep and better health management, according to a new study by University of Minnesota sociology professors Erin Kelly and Phyllis Moen, which appears in the December issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behaviour. "Our study shows that moving from viewing time at the office as a sign of pro-
KEY FINDINGS =Employees participating in the flexible workplace initiative reported getting almost an extra hour (52 minutes) of sleep on nights before work. =Employees participating in the flexible workplace initiative managed their health differently: They were less likely to feel obligated to work when sick and more likely to go to a doctor when necessary, even when busy. =The flexible workplace initiative increased employees' sense of schedule control and reduced their work-family conflict which, in turn, improved their sleep quality, energy levels, self-reported health, and sense of personal mastery while decreasing employees' emotional exhaustion and psychological distress. "Narrower flexibility policies allow some 'accommodations' for family needs, but are less likely to promote employee health and well-being or to be available to all employees," says Kelly. ductivity, to emphasising actual results can create a work environment that fosters healthy
behaviour and well-being," says Moen. "This has important policy implications, suggesting that
initiatives creating broad access to time flexibility encourage employees to take better care of themselves." Using longitudinal data collected from 608 employees of a white-collar organisation before and after a flexible workplace initiative was implemented, the study examined changes in health-promoting behaviours and health outcomes among the employees participating in the initiative compared to those who did not participate. The workplace initiative redirected the focus of employees towards measurable results and away from when and where work is completed.

ack in 2009 when Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao were expecting their first child, things didn’t go as planned for the expectant parents. But in December 2011, their parenting dreams finally came true when they were blessed with a baby boy thanks to surrogacy. Still a taboo topic for many, surrogacy is fast turning out to

cy must be adopted by the genetic (biological) parents unless they can establish through genetic (DNA) fingerprinting that the child is theirs. Surrogacy by assisted conception should normally be considered only for patients for whom it would be physically or medically impossible/undesirable to carry a baby to term. Payments to surrogate mothers should cover all genuine expenses associated with the pregnancy. Documentary evidence of the financial arrangement must be available. The ART centre should not be involved in this. Advertisements regarding surrogacy should not be made by the ART clinic. A surrogate mother should not be over 45 years of age. A relative, a known person, as well as a person unknown to the couple may act as a surrogate mother for the couple. A prospective surrogate mother must be tested for HIV and shown to be seronegative for this virus just before embryo transfer. The prospective surrogate mother must also declare that she will not use drugs intravenously, and not undergo blood transfusion excepting of blood obtained through a certified blood bank. No woman may act as a surrogate more than thrice in her lifetime.
be the one stop solution for couples who are unable to conceive and have almost given up all hope of becoming parents. Experts in the city say that they receive a large number of enquiries for surrogacy from couples these days. In fact, the going rate for renting a womb could be anywhere between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 6 lakhs depending
THE SURROGATE LIFE Part I on the understanding between the surrogate and the commissioning parents. However, as a rule IVF centres/clinics never get involved in the process of surrogacy, nor do they advertise for the same. “We have several patients who would like to opt for surrogacy when all else fails. However, at our clinic we have very strict policies when it comes to entertaining such requests. For starters, we never suggest the same to our patients, unless they themselves come forth with such a request. Even when they do, we have a checklist in place before we give them the go ahead,” says Dr Mamata Deendayal, an infertility specialist at Infertility Institute and Research Center. Any couple
seeking surrogacy has to first meet all the requirements to qualify for the same. Most IVF centres in the City only approve of surrogacy if a couple absolutely can’t have a baby. For instance, if a woman was born without a uterus or if her womb was removed for medical reasons and as a result she cannot conceive, or if all other assisted reproductive methods have failed. Couples are then given a copy of the national guidelines on surrogacy and are required to sign an appropriate consent form as drafted by a lawyer. It is only after these criteria are met that a couple can go ahead with surrogacy. For a woman who is willing to rent her womb also there is a list of requirements that she must fulfill. For starters, she must be over 21 years of age and below 45. She should have tested negative for HIV and
other sexually transmitted diseases and these tests should be conducted just before she undergoes IVF treatment for conception. Dr Dhiraj Gada, president of Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction, says, “While we do not have specific data on how many couples are opting for surrogacy, there are strict guidelines chalked out under the ART Bill. The surrogate and the commissioning parents must enter into a legal contract wherein the child’s custodial rights are handed over to the commissioning parents after his/her birth.” Considering the fact that many foreign nationals are also seeking surrogacy in India, according to the guidelines they must appoint a local guardian for the child who will be legally responsible for the infant till he/she can be adopted by the foreign national.
With cases of infertility on the rise due to various factors, surrogacy is fast turning out to be a preferred option for most childless couples

Sugary way to stave off heart disease SYDNEY: Mary Poppins was right when she said that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down — scientists have now stumbled upon a sugary way to keep heart disease at bay. Corin Storkey, scientist at the Heart Research Institute, made the discovery while working for his PhD under Carl Schiesser, a professor at the Bio21 Institute, University of Melbourne. Storkey and Schiesser with other colleagues have formulated new heart disease preventatives based on sugar and selenium, the journal Chemical Communications reported. “Although these compounds are not the kind of sugar most people would buy as a Valentine’s Day gift, we are still very excited by their potential to maintain a healthy heart,” he said. “Our seleno-sugar compounds work by scavenging hypohalous acids, a group of highly reactive chemicals that can damage tissues when produced in the wrong place, at the wrong time or at excessive levels,” said Schiesser. “One predictor of future heart disease in patients is the raised level of the enzyme that produces these hypohalous acids,” he added. “We are hoping that in the future our new chemicals will keep matters of the heart sweet, well, at least health-wise,” said Storkey. Sitting down makes your bum bigger LONDON: If you happen to sit more often you are more likely to have a bigger bottom. Experts say that the pressure put on areas of the body used for sitting produces up to 50 per cent more fat in those parts. This can explain why couch potatoes and other sedentary behaviour makes you fat when combined with a lack of exercise. Even people with healthy diet and exercise habits will be affected if they spend long periods sitting behind a desk, said researchers. Researchers found that preadipocyte cells — the precursors to fat cells — turn into fat cells and produce even more fat when subject to prolonged periods of ‘mechanical stretching loads’ — the kind of weight we put on our body tissues when we sit. Studying MRI images of the muscle tissue of patients paralysed by spinal cord injuries, researchers noticed that, over time, lines of fat cells were invading major muscles in the body. The research has been published in the American Journal of Physiology - Cell Physiology.

Because you are what you wear
t goes back a few decades, when a coterie of friends, usually the ones who decide to break conventions and create their own identity; ripped their denims in order to show their rebellion and their allegiance to the era of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. And thus started the trend of ripped denims. And it has since then, been a rebellion that every average teeny bopper identified with. The trend then percolated into the ever-expanding wardrobes of the rich and the famous, with a little bit of alterations in the 1980s. And the ripped denims reached the pinnacle of popularity when popular celebs like Madonna not only wore the peek-a-boo denims but also when a jeans worn by her during a photoshoot with Herb Ritts for the True Blue album cover got sold for a whopping 18,000 pounds!! Today, this trend is being endorsed by the world over. We get some of Bollywood’s leading fashion designers and photographers to tell us about their favourite celebs who can carry off the ripped jeans look. The trendy Katrina Kaif in Mere Brother ki Dulhan was the ultimate rocker babe, oozing attitude, and then some. With the guitar in her hand, as she rocked the Red Fort with her performance, one could not but help notice the ripped denims she sported. The result? The volume (read sound) of every other home in the country went a few decibels higher, with confused mothers trying to decipher why their daughters were tearing their perfectly tailored denims. Well, little did they know, it was the latest fad that is making the rounds. Fashion photographer Colston Julian says, "When it comes to the ripped denim look, Katrina Kaif wins hands down. She looks good, and it doesn't seem like she has made any effort to look the way she does. I have done a couple of photoshoots with her, and man is she lovely. Among the men, I believe that Hrithik Roshan carries off the ripped denims style with elan." Ashley Rebello, a celebrated fashion designer says, "It is not about how tall or

short you are. It really does not matter — but it is all about the right kind of attitude. I have seen some people having so much attitude, it makes them look less stylish and more snobbish, and there are some that wear their denims perfectly, but do not have much of a persona. Both of them are damp squibs! The first actor that comes to my mind when I think of the ripped look is Salman Khan. Simply because he just doesn't care about what the world around him thinks, the ripped denims look suits him perfectly. Katrina and Deepika among the ladies have the right spunk in them to carry off the ripped look. I have seen both of them at various events, and both seem to fit into the demands of the ripped denim look." Fashion designer Anita Dongre says, "I think Priyanka Chopra is made for the ripped look. Somehow, I think she stands out from the rest of the girls." When asked about one advice that people must take seriously when considering a ripped denim, she says, "The tops should not be too blingy, it is great to wear just a tee with a simple logo. Also, one should avoid wearing kurtis and kurtas on a ripped denim look as it is neither modern, nor ethnic. Go for minimalistic jewellery, and then you don’t have to care for what the pundits of conventions are saying!"
What is now being sold as the hottest thing to happen in the denim world is now supremely easy to make, thanks to a multitude of websites talking about how easy it is to create one at home. We picked one of them that made making ripped denims sound as easy as reading the alphabet! Pick an old denim, cut it in horizontal lines above the knee area, and scape the denim from underneath with a cheese grater to give it the ripped look.

en and Vivien Harmon move from Boston to Los Angeles with their teenage daughter, Violet in order to bring some sort of order to their dysfunctional family. While Ben tries to win back the love and trust of Vivien because she caught him cheating on her, Vivien is left devastated after a brutal miscarriage. They move into a restored mansion fully aware of its history but unaware that its dead residents still haunt the corridors. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the American Horror Story (AHS) for you. The psychosexual thriller is created and produced by the co-creators of Glee and Nip/Tuck, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. When
N
the show was given a thumbs up, AHS became one of the year’s most anticipated TV shows. While our three-year love affair with Glee slowly starts to fade, one will find that AHS is of a much darker tone and leaves you jumpy at the slightest movement. Though, the plot is filled with familiar elements from what we have seen from horror gurus before, AHS has the ability to keep you rooted to the spot, (occasionally even turning down the volume) thanks to some unbelievably neat editing. Murphy created Nip/Tuck, based on research when he was working as an undercover journalist for a story on plastic surgery. Ryan then put together the hit musical series Glee with co-executive producer Brad Falchuk, which went on to become the first new
fall series in 2009 to have 22 episodes in Season one. From what we have observed, Murphy is the kind of guy who likes to explore a different side to his personality each time. Whether it is picking out songs to be performed as part of the Glee Club or trying to assure people to be happy with what they look like by display of regurgitating graphics, with AHS, he clearly has stated that he has a great taste in horror too. Though, the premise is questionable, you realise how long the residents can stay put in the house after they discover that it’s haunted. Far from boring, AHS is a heart-thumping chiller, guaranteed to haunt your dreams with its captivating style. For those who want to share in this scream-fest, AHS Season 1 is available online.
ikhil Taneja says, “I think there are so many good TV shows and so little time. Each show is tailored to suit the different tastes of a more demanding audience. Shows like F.R.I.E.N.D.S will always be on repeat but its the age of the vampires. Be it Vampire Diaries, True Blood or Supernatural or even about pseudo vampires who sparkle, they hypnotise you with their engaging plots and story lines.”

The Bigg Boss’ house of scandals T
he Big Boss in India, like the previous sessions, continues to top the TRP charts. This week saw Shraddha Sharma exit, which didn’t come as a surprise as she was the only ‘dormant’ contestant among the other three in danger the last week. Although its parent version Big Brother in UK entertains their audiences with a lot of sex and intimate details of the house-
mates, thankfully Bigg Boss is regulated by the Indian ‘societal’ censorship. However, the survival mantra here continues to be the ‘blitzkrieg strategy’ leaving the audience either awed or disgusted. Either ways it attracts eye balls. The recent entry of porn star Sunny Leone was much hyped. However, nothing sensational has happened in the house after that. And since she

was being a normal and simple girl-next-door, it may have disappointed the audience. The makers of Big Boss pushed for display of the sexy
side of her, by giving her the pole dancing task! While that continues, I feel Pooja Mishra will be sent back and she can turn the house into a living hell for the housemates or might come back subdued like Dolly Bindra did last time as a measure to correct her tarnished image. On the other hand, it can also be Pooja Bedi who can be quite sensational if she comes
into her own. With this week’s nominations, I am pretty sure Shonali will be evicted. This, as she is the least controversial of them all. And now for the inside news: Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds is all set to enter the Bigg Boss 5 house tonight. It will be interesting to see whether this Australian will bowl over the audience in spite of the language barrier!

In 2011, movies have been allotting huge budgets to branding and promotions. Sometimes, the promotion budget alone, accounts for 50 per cent of the movie cost. Has such expensive branding helped the movies do well? We explore
Buying their way to success

f on the one side the government is grappling with inflation, the film industry remains undeterred as it spends more and more money on branding and marketing alone. For instance Ra.One set a record, with Rs52 crore as their marketing budget. It has also made another record for the longest promotion in Bollywood history owing to the 10month long publicity campaign. It is another matter that the film failed to make a great impression at the box-office. So how important is promotion and marketing for movies? Shiela Panicker, a brand consultant says, “Promotion and hype is important. However, success or failure cannot be linked to promotions. For example, some people say Ra.One bombed at the box-office due to overexposure. I don't agree. I think the Indian audience failed to relate to the superhero concept. They have not responded well to the previous superheroes like Krrish or Drona either. I think superhero flicks are meant more for the English movie loving audience.” She continues, “Pre-release hype in today's time is imperative. In fact, a lot of filmmakers who know that their movie might not do well depend on the generated hype and recover their investment by airing it in as many theatres as possible in the first week, and it works for them!” Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are considered marketing gurus, thanks to the way they promote their movies. Aamir left no stone unturned promoting Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini, Delhi Belly, or any of his movies for that matter. Shah Rukh too, went over-
board with his promotions for Ra. One. Now filmmakers, it seems, have adopted a callous attitude; as the general view is that even though the script does not work, creating a lot of hype and getting the actors’ faces on every possible product and TV shows will earn them the money. Is there any sure-short promotion strategy to make a movie successful? Mahendra K the CEO of I Brand answers, “No. Post-production branding and promotion is as important as making a good movie. But what the filmmakers and brand promoters need to realise is that over hype is definitely not the key to success. Today, almost every medium is a target for possible promotions — right from press conferences to television appearances to cross-promotion tie ups with parallel brands, etc.” He advises,“Too much can kill a movie; like it happened with Mausam, Rockstar and Shaitan this year. These movies misled their audience. Shaitan for one, was a complete mish-mash and was no where close to what the promotions showed. On the other hand, Mausam was another movie that was over zealously promoted and the end result was quite the opposite.” Like they say — too much of anything can be too bad. Propagating the movie in the right way is one of the most important things the directors and advertising companies must focus on. Whether it is like the lowkey promotion of the movie Pyaar ka Punchanama that went on to do extremely well, or promotion with a hint of mystery like that of Delly Belly that left the audience wondering what it would turn out to be, till the movie released. It is about being different and innovative, but definitely not going overboard! Are the movie makers listening?

Producer Neelima Tirumalasetti talks about her tryst with films and her journey with Pawan Kalyan S Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com
N
eelima Tirumalasetti finds herself in an unfamiliar zone, yet she seems to be quite aware of the twists and turns her life has taken over the past four years. After spending more than 12 years in the US as an IT analyst, she moved back to India in 2008 and joined Pawan Kalyan’s team as the general secretary of Yuvarajyam, the youth wing of PRP. Later, when Pawan Kalyan and Vishnu Vardhan decided to team up for Panjaa, Neelima and her husband Nagesh Muntha turned producers for the film. “After playing an important role in Yuvarajyam, I wanted to continue my journey with Pawan Kalyan. When he was discussing Panjaa with Vishnu, he thought that a new producer might do justice to the subject because it was unlike anything he had done before,” Neelima says. So did her IT background come in handy while working on her first production venture? “Of course. After working in an organised sector like IT, film production was a different ball game. Every day is full of surprises but it’s amazing how everything falls into place at the end of the day. For this film, we wanted to do everything as per plan. It was only because of proper planning that we were able to adhere to the shooting schedule and didn’t go overboard in terms of the budget,” she adds. Back in 2005, she was in the headlines for filing a lawsuit against Caremark for racial discrimination and four years later, she won the lawsuit, which forced American firms to amend their corporate laws to curb racial discrimination at workplace. “I am a fighter by nature. When PRP wanted to launch their NRI wing, I was invited for an event where I
met Pawan Kalyan. When he came to know about the lawsuit, he was amazed at my determination to take on such a big firm. He was very impressed with what I had been doing and asked me to join his team,”she reveals about her first interaction with Pawan Kalyan. There aren’t too many female producers in the Telugu film industry and Neelima is the first female producer to have worked with Pawan Kalyan in his 15-year-long career. “You have to be mentally prepared for everything. I personally didn’t have any major hiccups, but it’s a tough job. People are really nice to you, but when it comes to accepting suggestions from a woman, they don’t take you seriously,” she smiles and adds, “But I am a hard working person. I was present on the set every single day trying to understand how things are done. After watching how hard people work for each and everything, my respect for film making has increased a lot. Sometimes, people keep doing their job despite suffering injuries and the level of commitment that they have for work is amazing. “ She is quite active on all the social networking sites where she has been interacting with a lot of fans of the actor. “We wanted to have a direct connection with Pawan’s fans because we wanted them to own the film. That’s when they’ll root for the film,” she says. So, what’s the most bizarre thing she has been asked about the film? “Someone asked me if Pawan Kalyan dies within the first 15 minutes of the film. Come on... I don’t think we’ll make a film like that. Panjaa is essentially a love story set in a mafia backdrop and I am sure that Telugu film lovers will be proud of the film,” she says.

Ravi Teja to team up with Suriya? R
avi Teja might soon join the list of Telugu actors such as Rana Daggubati and Jagapathi Babu who have been signed up for Tamil films. If the grapevine is to be believed, Ravi Teja might soon team up with Suriya for an upcoming Tamil film. Venkat Prabhu, the director of the film, is reportedly in talks with Ravi Teja for this film. In the past, UTV Motion Pictures had approached Ravi Teja for a film and the actor had reportedly given his consent if he comes across a good script. Currently, Ravi Teja is acting in Gunasekhar’s Nippu and he had also agreed to do a couple of films that will be directed by Shouryam Siva and Meher Ramesh.
Gopichand’s marriage fixed I
t’s a year of celebrity weddings. Earlier this year, Allu Arjun and NTR got married and recently Ram Charan Tej got engaged to Upasana Kamineni. Now, Gopichand has given his nod to a marriage proposal. He had earlier stated that his parents were looking for a girl for him for quite sometime. We hear that he’s going to get married to Haritha, a Hyderabad-based businessman’s daughter. After completing a course in engineering in Hyderabad, Haritha recently completed her MBA from an Australian University. The couple is going to get engaged soon and the wedding is likely to happen in February 2012.
Preetika is happy with Priyudu’s response
P
reetika, who recently made her debut in Priyudu, is happy with the response for her film. Recently, she flew back from Singapore to take part in the film’s promotions in Hyderabad. A couple of days ago, she and Varun Sandesh decided to watch the film in a local theatre. As it was already late, the duo borrowed a cap and a shawl from their make-up artists and went to watch the film after the show began. “It was my first experience at a local theatre and I was amazed with the audience’s response regarding my introduction scene and songs. People loved Ali and Tagubothu Ramesh’s comedy.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
