Bonfire festival ignites family values Anubha K Singh

H

yderabad as we know is a melting pot of cultures and festivals. Be it Diwali, Eid or Christmas, the City celebrates every festival with equal gusto. And one such festival is Lohri. Celebrated by the Punjabi population in the City, this festival is also known as the bonfire festival. Lohri falls on January 13 and is known for its fun-filled festivity, observed by the Punjabi community for a good harvest. Punjabis in the City are gearing up for the festival with lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Lohri is marked by a range of traditional activities like lighting the ritualistic bonfire in the evening, dancing to the beats of the dhol after relishing traditional home-

Ranjit Sethi and his family revel in the Lohri spirit made dishes, singing popular folk songs around the bonfire. Ranjit Sethi, a Punjabi settled in the City said, “My brother got married this year so we have a special reason to celebrate Lohri.

This year we will celebrate it at our farmhouse in Medchal. Lohri is not just a festival for the people of Punjab, but a symbol of a rich life”. Apart from celebrating the

good harvest, there are more reasons that add joy to the festival. Lohri also celebrates fertility in Punjabi families. The first marriage or birth of the male child in the family calls for special celebrations during Lohri. The first Lohri of a new bride or a newborn baby is considered extremely important. While celebrating Lohri, all the family members light a bonfire and sit around it. The festival begins when the family forms a circle around the fire and walk around it throwing in offerings. The huge bonfires are lit in front yards and people gather circle around and offer puffed rice, popcorn and other munchies into the fire while singing popu-

lar folk songs. It is an offering and prayer to the fire god. After the prayers winter savouries are served around the bonfire along with the traditional dinner. On Lohri day, children go from door to door singing and demanding the Lohri ‘loot’ in the form of money and eatables like peanuts, jaggery, or sweets like gajak, rewri, etc. They sing in praise of Dulha Bhatti, a Punjabi avatar of Robin Hood who robbed the rich to help the poor. Doing the bhangra around thebonfire is another popular tradition while celebrating Lohri. Lohri almost coincides with the festivals of Makar Sankranti and Pongal all of which communicate the same message of oneness and celebrates the spirit of brotherhood while thanking god for a bountiful life on earth.

ust as educational institutions across the City were beginning to limp back to normalcy after the crippling Sakala Janula Samme, the Telangana Joint Action Committee called for yet another bandh today. However, unwilling to bear the brunt of these regular strikes, managements of various schools and colleges across the City decided to function normally. More so since some of them had exams lined up. “According to our time table the last exam was scheduled for today and we decided to conduct it. If it’s postponed then, the entire schedule will be upset,”

said Anitha B, teacher at Daffodils Public School. During the last academic year intermediate students suffered the most, thanks to the Telangana bandhs. This time though the

intermediate colleges put their foot down and conducted classes even during bandhs. “We had received the news last evening but we plan to continue with our classes. The pre-

Hospitals to have ‘not-fire safe’ boards SAFETY Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: The fire prevention wing of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has begun to crack the whip on private and corporate hospitals for non-compliance of fire safety norms. The recent fire mishap at a Kolkata hospital which killed many people triggered this reaction from the corporation. Department officials will shortly be issuing notices to hospitals — with more than 50 beds — for violating existing norms by failing to obtain a No Objection Certificates (NOC) from the corporation. “We have identified the 58 hospitals with over 50bed capacity which have violated fire safety norms by not obtaining an NOC from us. We will issue notices to all such hospitals in the next two days and give them a month’s time for obtaining the NOC. If these hospitals do not respond, we will initiate necessary action,” GHMC Fire Safety wing assistant director C Laxmi Prasad told Postnoon on Friday. Prasad also said if the

It may be recalled that

GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu informed all hospital managements to obtain NOCs from them and warned them that they would display ‘Hospital with no fire safety’ boards if any of them did not comply with their orders.

Fact sheet According to official statistics, the total number of hospitals in GHMC limits are 838. Among these hospitals, there are 88 hospitals with above 50-bed capacity, while 750 hospitals are there with less than 50 bed-capacity. These hospitals also include clinics and diagnostic centres etc. Among them, 30 large and 170 small hospitals obtained NOCs from the corporation.

boards are approaching and we cannot afford to give holidays for such reasons even for a single day,” said Sayed Mukaram, director, I-Class junior college. For the most part the bandh

received a lukewarm response in the City, since most schools either already had a holiday while others decided to ignore the bandh call and function as usual. However, Krishank Manne, spokesperson, Osmania University, Joint Action Committee, said, “The bandh was partly unsuccessful since schools that are functioning have deployed special police forces. They are misusing the police force for a wrong cause.” Education activists are pleading with T-agitators to exempt educational institutions. “They don’t close cinema theaters, malls and restaurants then why educational intuitions? I request the agitators to exempt us from this,” said Dr Tiwari, principal, Global Institute of Science and Technology.

Kukatpally DMC Ravikiran has been appointed as the new additional com-

missioner of the Health and Sanitation wing while Krishnaiah was transferred as the DMC of Kukatpally circle. While officials of the corporation insist that the transfers have been made in a regular manner, Postnoon learnt that these officers especially Aleem Basha and Ram Narayana Reddy had faced the wrath of the new mayor when he was the standing committee member last year. Majid Hussain told Postnoon, “It’s true that when I was the standing committee member, some officials upset us (standing committee members) with their inconsistent replies and delays in solving public problems.” Sources say that it was owing to this that the commissioner issued transfer orders to avoid any conflict. Majid made it clear that all officials of the corporation should follow the directions of corporators. The mayor also hinted at more transfers in the coming days.

uying a snazzy new bike, spending big bucks on getting it modified and then zooming through City streets, all for that extra bit of attention seems to be the latest trend among youngsters. But there’s one youngster who clearly believes in being different — he has designed a one of its kind bicycle to look like a motorbike. Using scrap material 23-year-old Mohammed Rafeeq has designed this cycle-cum-bike and proudly rides it around the City, becoming the cynosure of all eyes. Rafeeq went visited several garages collecting parts before assembling them to create this unique vehicle. The two-wheeler looks like a Luna from behind while its body resembles a motorcycle. But from the front it boasts of a bicycle handlebar and wheel. The vehicle can easily seat two and offers a speed of up to 50 kmph. When building it Rafeeq used parts from a bicycle, a Luna and a motorcycle. “Ever since childhood I was fascinated with making something unique from scrap. I use to collect used remote control cars,

rink is a great leveler, some people say, for it brings out the the underlying bonhomie in us. Drinks, gone beyond your base capacity can stir animal passion too, it can also evoke Dutch Courage. In the case of a murderer, it was the bonhomie and imprudence after a drinking session that gave him away. Mohd Basravi, an auto driver by profession and a resident of Shaheen Nagar, was having a drink session with a few of his friends. After a peg or two he became expansive and boasted that he had raped and murdered his mother-in-law and the ‘nincompoop’ police could not crack the case even after three years. The group had a good laugh at the cop and had fun. Mohd detailed how he and four his friends ‘enjoyed’ his mother-in-law Sajida Begum and later killed her. Mohd Basravi had little idea that one of his ‘friends’ happened to be friendly with cops helping them solve crime. In fact, investigating cops use this ploy to get things out of suspected criminals without resorting to third degree methods. The ‘friend’ duly informed the crime investigator and the next day itself Mohd found himself behind bars with a heavy hangover and a hazy memory of what happened.

BACKGROUNDER The crime took place under the Pahdi Shareef police limits three years ago. According to Pahadi Shareef police inspector T Goverdhan, Basravi got married to Sajida Begum's daughter Saleha Begum in 2007. After a few months of the marriage Saleha's mother Sajida Begum, 50, had an illicit relationship with her son-in-law. After continuing this relationship for some time, Mohd tried to wriggle out but Sajida was unwilling to let him go. She threatened to defame him if he didn’t continue with the sexual relationship. Mohd says he was fed up and wanted to end it but the ‘old cow’ would not let go and he finally decided to do away with her. He got help from Salman Mohsin Lahmadi, Syed Mohsin, Syed Nawaz, and Saddam Jaffer Mirza Baig to execute his plan. Now, they are all counting hours in prison.

Do justice for Anuj: Parents plead as they return with body

T

he distraught parents of murdered Indian student Anuj Bidve have met with the authorities here and pleaded for justice for their son who was shot dead on Boxing Day. They were expected to return to India with Anuj’s body on Saturday. Subhash Bidve, Anuj’s father, met with Home Affairs Select Committee chairman Keith Vaz Thursday to discuss the police investigation into his son’s death. He flew into Britain on Wednesday with Anuj’s mother Yogini and brother-in-law Rakesh Sonawane and the family is due to return to India with Anuj’s body Saturday. Bidve revealed how he sent his son Anuj to study engineering in England because he wanted the best for him. Kiaran Stapleton, 20, of Ordsall, has been charged with his murder. Bidve was studying at Lancaster University and was visiting Greater Manchester over Christmas. He was shot in the

But I feel myself as a father this should not happen again because a lot of Indian students come here for their education and they go back to their own countries,” the Daily Mail quoted Bidve as saying after meeting the authorities here. “I humbly request to you all kindly do justice for Anuj. “He studied engineering in India in an inner city. He was a very brilliant student and he was

working on core engineering, like something in the field of microelectronic chips engineering. “He was working on his really special projects and he was very happy staying here and doing his work. He was a very great asset not just to India but the whole globe, that was the kind of work he was doing. “He was really straightforward, very disciplined, very softly spoken and very friendly to everyone and a very good son to me.“I wanted to give him the best. As a father that’s what I wanted,” the devastated father said. Vaz said he had passed on his condolences to the family during the meeting and updated them on contact he had received from well-wishers since the killing on Boxing Day. He pledged to get a full report on the incidents surrounding the death of Bidve following the completion of the criminal proceedings. IANS

More than 100 residents of a nearby village, including the village head, were arrested for allgedly ransacking the house of a person, who recently converted to Christianty, protesting his plan to construct a ‘prayer hall’ in the locality. Tension gripped the B Manihatti Village, about 18 kms from here, following the incidents and a large number of police personnel have been deployed there to prevent any untoward happening, police said. According to police, one Moorthy had sought permission to construct a house but started building a prayer hall in the area which was objected by the locals. The villagers allegedly ransacked Moorthy’s house and set afire his vehicle, TV set, computer and other belongings. Police rushed to the spot and detained the villagers. As they were being taken, the villagers, including students, blocked the police, by squatting in front of the van, protesting against the arrest but were dispersed by police. PTI

Editorials WE NEED BOUNCY wickets in India

W

ith two Tests Down Under bringing back memories of the series washout in England, it’s time the BCCI wakes up and asks domestic curators to prepare pitches that aid pace and bounce. The fabled Indian batting greats, all with their impressive individual records, collapsed like a house of cards before the comparatively inexperienced pack led by a ‘Pup’. It has once again exposed the Achilles heel of the Indian willow-wielders — their inability to handle pace and bounce on pitches that aid fast bowlers. The dead pitches of the sub-continent may help the batsmen pile up personal records to the extent of being venerated as ‘gods’, but they come a cropper against quality pace attack abroad. We need to prepare domestic pitches to support pace and bounce so that at least the upcoming generations of batsmen are equipped to handle tough tasks abroad with ease. Closing your eyes may create darkness but it will be a mistake to think the rest of the world is fooled into believing that it is night.

WHY WE LOVE Michael Clarke

H

e walks up to the crease with India looking good to wresting back the advantage; he gets involved in two near-300-run partnerships; on his own, he pounds our bowlers for 329 runs; he dashes prayers of a country obsessed with the game — sends back Sachin Tendulkar when on the verge of making history. But how can you not love a selfless man!

arely has the State found its feet after the innumerable miseries of the 45-day Sakala Janula Samme and Telangana Rashtra Samiti supremo KCR has dropped his Sankranthi shocker — another wave of separate-statehood agitations. Other than the industries, which suffered a whopping `32,000-crore loss and a massive migration of investments to states considered more ‘stable’, it is the education sector, which bore the brunt. Schools, colleges and universities lost precious working days, putting enormous pressure on parents and students alike. Since the conclusion of the Samme, the educational institutions have been working extra hours, cutting short holidays or skipping them altogether to finish lessons. Such a massive interruption has had a serious impact on the psyche of students, not to mention the tremendous pressure brought about by the massive workload and inadequate rest. The length of the agitation also forced parents to hire private tutors or arrange for tuitions, causing a further strain on family budgets. Also thrown haywire, were plans of students preparing for entrances to higher education institutions elsewhere in India and abroad. About 10,000 foreign students in different colleges and universities were also at their wits’ end as the visas are issued for limited period and getting them renewed involves a lot of paperwork and expenses. Life for the public was made difficult by closed government offices, lack of public transport and the massive power cuts forced by employees of Singareni Collieries joining the strike. Everything has a tipping point; the same applies to the agitation for separate statehood. With the Centre in no mood to concede to their demands, the public opinion, fuelled by the denial of services, turned against KCR and Co, the T-protagonists had no other go but accept the first face-saving truce. But what happened to the students of

Postnoon is not a typical newspaper which is filled with political information which can put me to sleep. The topics covered in this paper easily attract every segment of the society and can keep them informed on the things happening around them. The afternoon newspaper seems to be very enthusiastic. I also love the sports section in this paper, it is informative and has a racy appeal to it. I look forward to making the best use of what the paper has to offer. Nishant Chikadpally

India’s performance in the second Test has been a complete disappointment. Dhoni sounded like the team had learned from its mistakes in the first Test but the captain has proved that his squad cannot walk the talk. On the other hand the Australians showed why they are the best, by attacking each batsman’s weak spot and tasting success. Indians have completely failed in this department. A team can earn respect only if it is equally successful at home and abroad, and India has miles to go before it can earn that. Gita Ramaswamy Sainikpuri

Osmania University, the heart of the agitation? Nothing! OU students came out with flying colours in their exams and the cream of the lot was lapped up by major companies in campus placement drives. So what happened to the students who were forcibly made to ride the separate-statehood bandwagon? They are struggling and toiling to ensure they don’t miss the bus when their contemporaries across the country are inching closer to the limited pie, without any hassles. Even the latest round of agitation has been planned by the TRS bosses keeping the convenience of their foot soldiers in mind. The OU students will participate only 10 days after the stir begins as they have exams during those days. Now what makes the pink squad assume that the lives and priorities of the rest are not as

important? The last round of agitation was nothing but prolonged nuisance, misery, destruction of property, monetary losses and missed opportunities. A repeat of the nightmarish ordeal definitely looks scary. If KCR and his T-brigade are confident about the public support they claim to have, they should have the guts to make participation in the Telangana agitation voluntary. Let the people decide if they are desperate enough for a separate state that they will drop all work and join their visionary leader and his cronies in realising the land of milk and honey that will cure all ills that have been ailing the region. With the dismal performance of states formed on similar lines at ensuring jobs, development and justice to their regions in mind, the people will show the T-men where they stand.

Women page is a great addition As a reader, I was glad to see a new addition to the paper — the women's page. Though, I am not much of a feminist, I still think that women are far-less appreciated and blamed easily as compared to their male counterparts. Let's just hope that through this column, we at least bring to light what's really hidden within. Liberation is only a state of mind but our fight to be accepted as an equal, shall always remain. Maya Vasudev Yousufguda

Faces of Hyderabad While everyone wants to jump onto a happening and successful bandwagon, your paper begs to differ. It is refreshing to see someone stand up and take notice of lesser mortals over the high and the mighty. Achievements need not necessarily be measured in terms of money, status or power. You are right when you say even a mundane job sincerely done deserves recognition. Congratulations to you. Keep the good work going and enlighten us with more of the likes of Syed Fareeduddin. Great to hear a piece of rare good news from the Secretariat. Ramesh Babu Malkajgiri

The essence of street food

hen a sub-editor is asked to write an article, he is bound to be zapped. Picking mistakes comes very easily to the human race, but producing something is a different cup of tea altogether — a 500-word one at that. Thankfully I was asked to write a piece on my everyday indulgence — food. Getting a picture of an out-of-shape meanie are you? Well, I am neither; because, I eat smart. And smart you can eat on the streets of Hyderabad. The number of small roadside eateries and pushcarts that sell non-pretentious tasty food must be visited to be believed. Food served here is second only to a mother’s cooking, more so since the wife did not pick up culinary skills from her’s. One alluring thing about street food is the variety at your disposal. You are not limited for choice as you would be with specialist restaurants. You can take your pick even as you see a variety of yummies being produced right before you, or by reading the body language of fellow customers. Hygiene; go take a walk. Street food is not just tasty, it also is numbing. What you don’t feel does not exist, right? Don’t panic. It is not as bad as that. The blokes who run these joints do it on a regular basis, and so are aware of the basic needs to keep the continuity. If they don’t have sparkling stainless steel kitchenware, it is because they don’t have the means. The inclination at maintaining hygiene, though, is there; if you don’t see that, you can always make suggestions. They are ‘open’ to it all. Health officials too, ensure basic cleanliness. In their own ways, they ensure that things do not go out of hand, even if they do not stick to norms. That they are not doing, not because their palms were greased, ‘the poor chap is into a noble profession and hence is show consideration’, that’s why. While there were times when eating food only meant filling the tummy, today’s folks, either voluntarily or chided by their doctor, are a wise lot. They do have their priorities cut out when it comes to food. There is enough awareness of the nutritional needs of the body. Cereal, yes, we all know we need. Protein, pulses and what-nots also are required, we understand. Affordability becomes a difficult proposition when we want all of this, especially when you opt for cooked food. With street food, you can be sure, this also gets addressed. With more and more couples working, the boarding part of the home is seldom tackled. And when you have to do it day after day, it is bound to take a toll on the pocket. Make a small compromise on the ambience and street food actually costs less than you would have to spend if you did the cooking on your own. Time, after all, is money, don’t forget that.

The politics of War-angal Polytricks A Saye Sekhar

N

ara Chandrababu Naidu wanted this hullabaloo over his Rythu Poru Bata in Telangana region, which was once considered a bastion of his party. With repeated routs at the hustings, the TDP is now trying to pick up threads exactly from where it lost. A stone-pelting on his carcade, a lathi-charge, an episode of firing teargas shells, a rasta roko, a dharna, a public meeting, and a myriad of statements — both critical and supportive, and a slew of TV talk shows. Ah! What a great return on investment. He got more from the same, raking emotions among the rank and file of his party. He is not naïve. The legerdemain with which he transferred his ‘political science’ from lab to land uncovered the strengths and weaknesses; losses and gains; and who is playing into whose hands. Conclusively, Naidu’s political matrix worked. The TRS was cooling its hooves, only to swing into action after its term holidays. He knew when to strike. And, he did. He wasn’t amazed at the lassitude of the TRS which takes sabbaticals in the course of the agitation. Precisely, that’s when he began touring Telangana districts in the garb of ‘rythu poru bata’. Now that the tent poles for the game are fixed, it did not take much

time for an astute Naidu to realise that the reticence of TRS in obstructing his tours was not chemistry, but mathematics. If at all, it was chemistry between the TRS and another political formation. What is that? There you go. YS Jaganmohan Reddy got any palpable resistance from the TRS cadres erased by announcing that he would not field any candidate against those who resigned for the cause of a separate Telangana. The TRS promptly acknowledged his gesture by its strategic silence. Then he announced a ‘rythu deeksha’ — a stir for farmers — and slated it for January 10 and 11 at Nizamabad in the Telangana heartland. The Congress leaders, who are unable to get all sides even on the Rubik’s Cube of Telangana, have already been rendered clueless on

whether the State in which a language called the ‘Italian of the East’ is spoken will be split at all. Then, who else would be jittered by the ingenious move of Jagan to test his popularity in Telangana region? The answer is straight: Chandrababu Naidu, who lost considerable ground in the disconcerted land. While egging a Dalit leader Mothkupalli Narsimhulu on to KCR and his flock, Naidu worked overtime in his back office — at which he is an all-time hit. So, the brouhaha over the Warangal tour isn’t a flash in the pan. If TRS can be incited to obstruct his own tour, it would be left with no alternative but to raise the banner of revolt against Jagan’s show of strength too. If that happens the two new-found pals would come apart at seams, sooner than later.

riting the story of Pulla Reddy Sweets is like attempting to write an epic. Pulla Reddy Sweets, for decades, have been the best takeaway for the visitors to Hyderabad. Children used to frisk the bags of their parents who return from Hyderabad to check if they brought Pulla Reddy Sweets. Every first day of the month used to be and still is a feast at several homes in the City with the breadwinner invariably

stopping over to buy a pack of kovapuri or a jangri for his loved ones at his/her sweet home. “There is no formula, secret or magic in successes of G Pulla Reddy sweets. However, we constantly strive to provide the same quality over the years. A customer visits us again only if he feels the same taste any number of times. “Many businesses forget the importance of maintaining the quality once they see success. Eighty per cent of our sweets are handmade and the rest are machine made in hygienic conditions,” said G. Raghava Reddy, Managing Partner, G Pulla Reddy Sweets. “We don’t want to expand anywhere by compromising on the quality. Sweets are perishable commodity. If we try to export, they may get dried up or

loosen their original taste. If we ask an outsider to produce, what is the guarantee that he will maintain the same quality? If someone sells a dry sweet, the

whole reputation or the brand that we have built over the years will be at stake. “However, we have plans to manufacture packed food with a shelf life of three to six months. This would be namkeen or some sweets. We will also export these products to foreign countries,” he added. “There are four outlets in Kurnool. We will add two more outlets to the existing chain of six outlets in Hyderabad. The two new outlets would be started at AS Rao Nagar and Kondapur next year. The current employee base is 200 and this expansion will add another 20. We don’t have plans to go public and will maintain our business without taking loans or burrowing money. There is competition, but we can withstand it. We have our own market positioning even during the

competition. “The turnover has fallen by 10 per cent this year due to frequent agitations and is now pegged at Rs. 42 crore as far as Hyderabad is concerned and net profit is 15 per cent. This may be less compared to the industry average. This is due to uncompromising attitude on quality. We throw 30 kg of ghee every day once it is boiled and used.” he explained. When asked about the best sweet of Pulla Reddy, I should not tell that. Public should answer this question. But, there are a lot of bestsellers in our showcase.

Thousands swamp Auto New launches Expo, exhibitors fret

NEW DELHI: Chaos seemed to reign at the Auto Expo Friday as thousands of visitors thronged auto exhibitors’ stalls at the Pragati Maidan, completely overrunning the venue, and causing many exhibitors including Anand Mahindra to fret over the shoddy management. The first two days which are kept as the official business and media interaction days saw press

personnel and exhibitors being physically harassed by thousands of freeloaders. Commenting on the state of affairs, Anand Mahindra, vice chairman and managing director Mahindra Group, tweeted on micro-blogging website Twitter: “Fare on display at Auto Expo is the richest I’ve seen. Infrastructure is still the poorest and beams a contradictory picture to the world.

Shudder to think of the stampede tomorrow when it opens to the public. This is the first time I’ve no desire to return for a second visit.” “The crowd management is dismal. Wall to wall people on a media day? Either management is lax or media is the most popular profession in India.” “There is no discipline here. We do not know from where did all these people in their thousands come in from. Imagine what will happen when the expo is opened for the public,” one of the many exhibitors at the mega event told IANS. “More chaos, sleepless nights are in store for the exhibitors, managers and security personnel due to the shoddy management coupled with the unruly crowd,” he added. “The purpose of the first two days is completely defeated. We wanted the interactions to go on smoothly between media and the company officials.” The public days for the event opens from Jan 7, when around 100,000 visitors are expected at Pragati Maidan. THE BIG CAT ROARS AGAIN If class, sophistication, elegance and uniqueness is what you’re after, then the 2012 Jaguar XF is a thrilling luxury saloon, writes Osama Salman

The best of Jaguar

MARK V The car was launched at the 1948 London Motor Show at the same time as the XK120, with which it shared a stand. However, the Mark V vastly outsold the XK120 by roughly 5,000 cars per year as compared to 2,000 cars per year for the XK120. There was also a drophead coupé version, which is now highly sought after.

I'm not going to even for a minute, suggest that it's [XFR] better than the M5, but it's as-good-as. And praise does not get higher than that. – Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear

BREAKING THE SPEED RECORD On November 7, 2008, a modified XFR was driven by Paul Gentilozzi of Rocketsports, who prepared the car, to a new Jaguar record of 225.675mph (363.189kmh) on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The new record beat the previous Jaguar record of 217.1mph (349.4kmh) set in a XJ220 in 1992.

E-TYPE The Jaguar E-Type was manufactured between 1961 and 1975. Its combination of looks, performance and competitive pricing established the marque as an icon of 1960s motoring. More than 70,000 E-Types were sold. The New York City Museum of Modern Art recognised the significance of the E-Type's design in 1996.

XJ6 Of the more recent saloons, the most significant is the XJ6, still the definitive Jaguar saloon car for many. From 1968 on, the Series I XJ saw minor changes, a complete redesign for 1986/1987 in XJ40, further modifications in 1995 (X300), in 1997 with V8-power (X308), and a major advance in 2003 with an industry-first aluminium monocoque-chassis.

Fed to death: Beware, affection can kill Dr Steven Rosenblatt

W

e all love our dogs. In fact, we love them so much, we offer them treats, table scraps and extralarge portions of food to demonstrate our affection. And they more than willingly accept every bit of food we send their way, whether it is good for them or not. Unfortunately, we often do more harm than good. Our emotional bond with our pets, together with changes in the way pet food is manufactured, can form the foundation for a deadly combination of canine and human excess. Already, studies suggest that between 25 and 40 per cent of all domesticated dogs in the US are overweight. Obesity is also a serious problem among dogs in the rest of the world. Given these dogs do not feed themselves, this epidemic of canine obesity is the responsibility of owners who overfeed their pets. Furthermore, several studies have shown dogs who remain lean will live much longer than those whose systems must cope with too much weight.

THE PERFECT PET! DADDY

D

addy (1994 – February 19, 2010) was an American Pit Bull Terrier integral to dog trainer Cesar Millan’s work and his television series, Dog Whisperer. Daddy became known for his calm temperament, tolerance for smaller dogs and capacity for empathy. Millan later selected another pit bull puppy, Junior, as Daddy’s protégé — to apprentice, learn his temperament and prepare to assume Daddy’s role after his death. At the time of Daddy’s death at age 16 in February 2010, Millan noted, “He represented what my grandfather taught me, never work against Mother Nature.”

NEWS YOU CAN USE

S DETECTING THE PROBLEM l Look down at your dog from above. You should be able to see a defined ‘waist’ just above the hip bones. If you cannot see the waist, your dog is too heavy. l You should be able to see and feel your dog’s ribs. While they should not be sticking out and your dog should not look like a walking skeleton, you should be able to see a rib or two and be able to feel them easily. If you cannot, your dog is overweight.

l Your dog should not have a hanging belly. Some altered females have a slight pouch as a result of spaying surgery, but this should consist only of hanging skin, not fat. You can tell by gently squeezing the pouch; if the skin fold of the pouch is more than 0.5 inches thick, your dog is fat. l If your dog is overweight, then it is likely that it is eating too much and you have probably been too liberal with food.

trict quarantine rules for pets that have kept the UK rabies-free were relaxed as ministers insisted improved vaccines and blood tests would keep the country well-protected against animal diseases. The requirement for a blood test after a rabies vaccination to prove it has been successful will be dropped for those travelling within the EU, although both they and travellers bringing pets back from other countries with “robust” veterinary systems such as the US and Australia will still have to wait 21 days after vaccination before departure. Pets from other non-EU countries, such as India, Brazil and South Africa, will need to meet stricter rules, including vaccination, a blood test weeks later and then a threemonth wait before they enter the UK.

ARE CERTAIN PETS MORE LIKELY TO BE OBESE? There are several factors that make it more likely that a pet will be obese. For dogs, these are... BREED certain breeds of dogs have a higher risk of becoming more obese than others. AGE the risk of becoming obese tends to increase with age. NEUTER STATUS neutered dogs of either sex are more likely to be obese than dogs who have not been spayed.

SEX with the exception of older dogs, obesity has also been reported to be more common in female dogs than in males. OWNER it has been suggested that dogs owned by obese owners may be more likely to be obese. The exact reason for this is not clear. However, it may be because overweight owners are less likely to exercise their dog, or less able to recognise obesity in their pet.

AFFENPINSCHER

T

he breed is German in origin and dates back to the 17th century. Affenpinschers have a distinct appearance that some associate with terriers. They are different from terriers, however, in that they are actually part of the pinscherschnauzer group and hence often get along with other dogs and pets. Affenpinschers are somewhat territorial when it comes to their toys and food, so they are not recommended for very small children. It is best suited for a family who likes a show and has a sense of humour. The affenpinscher is prone to hip dysplasia. As with many small breeds of dog they are prone to collapsed trachea.

here’s nothing better than spending a quiet day snuggled up with a warm mug of coffee, some of your favourite snacks and a great book. And if that book is a mystery novel, it’s the icing on the cake. The Floating Admiral is the icing that you just can’t seem to get enough of. Originally published in 1931, the novel is a result of collaboration by 14 accomplished mystery novel authors. With the likes of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, GK Chesterton, Freeman Wills Crofts and Clemence Dane amongst others, collaborating to come up with a thrilling crime fiction, this novel can’t help but emerge a firecracker. The adage ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ obviously does not hold good for this work of fiction, which despite its varying styles and register manages to be a page turner. Set in the sleepy seaside town of Whynmouth, the plot revolves around the idyllic town life being disrupted when one fine day an old sailor lands his rowing boat

with a corpse on board. The murder is recent and the corpse has a stab wound in the chest. For inspector Rudge, to solve this mystery is a challenge considering he rarely comes across cases of murder in this otherwise quiet town. As his investigation progresses, there are several obstacles thrown his way, each time making him wonder if he’s even on the right track. Annoyingly for Rudge, the vicar who owns the boat is stubbornly withholding information. To top it all, the identity of the victim, too, is in question. As tricky as the plot is with its many twists and turns, this novel, unlike other works of crime fiction, has several solutions written by each of the 14 authors. Each author in his/her inimitable way adds to the plot and the conclusion, all the time ensuring the reader doesn’t lose interest for an instant. Despite the 14 different devious minds at work, the pace of the novel is steady and leads up to an unexpected finale. But for those of you expecting something racy and sensational, The Floating Admiral is not your typical modern-day mystery novel. What it is however, is a good old-fashioned murder mystery that will still succeed in giving you the shivers. The Floating Admiral is a valuable piece of detective fiction history. Read it for a peak into how various authors successfully came together to create a piece that will leave readers wanting for more. BOOK: The Floating Admiral Pages: 351 Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton

In pursuit of the truth Sherlock Holmes

Feluda

N

o one can forget this sharp-nosed, pipe-smoking detective. Introduced by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, this consultant detective from London likes playing his violin and chess, apart from solving crimes. So popular was the character, that when Doyle gave him a fictitious address at 221 Baker Street, it became a so-called ‘tourist hotspot. He met his ‘end’ in the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, along with his long-time nemesis, Professor Moriarty, but came back to ‘life’ when the public protested against it.

F

or all those who have grown up on a staple of Indian detective fiction, Feluda is one name you cannot forget. The Bengali filmmaker and writer Satyajit Ray created him. Feluda, also known as Pradosh Chandra Mitra is mostly seen accompanied by Topshe, his cousin. The association between the two men is often compared to the relationship Holmes and Watson share. Chewing beetel leaves, smoking Charminar brand of cigarettes and reading are few of Feluda’s favourite pastime activities. Feluda relies mostly upon his superb analytical ability and observation skills to solve cases instead of using physical strength or weapons. He is very choosy about taking up cases and prefers cases that require cerebral effort.

The only time when perhaps, Tintin’s four-legged friend ever let him down, was when a bone distracted him. Accompanied by Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus and detectives Thomson and Thompson, the Tintin team is unstoppable. The recently released movie proved that he still has a loyal audience.

mmortalised by Agatha Christie, the creator of Hercule Poirot, Jane Marple, the gawky spinster appeared in 12 crime novels and 20 short stories. When she is not solving crimes, Miss Marple is a typical British woman who is either doing her gardening, or knit-work. The lady draws analogies to her past experiences while solving a crime (mostly that bored her acquaintances), and is unafraid to visit crime scenes or see dead bodies. Signs of her old age are evident in writings where the author talks of her inability to knit, and her need to have frequent vacations.

O’YEAH

Author Zac O' Yeah talks to us about what is in a name, what's up with Scandinavian writers and why he feels so at home in India

Padmini C padmini.c@postnoon.com

nDoes being tucked away in the hills somewhere mean a new book in the writing? If yes, when can we expect to see it? And what else is keeping you busy at the moment ? This very moment I am finishing a new manuscript, should probably be done by Thursday next week. But yes, this is a novel I’ve been working on for some three years and it is scheduled to be out by the end of 2012 (there’ll be an Indian edition too, from Hachette), so this January is the deadline. Also I am not really tucked away in the hills, I just like to pretend that I am a sagely character on a hilltop. I really live in Bengaluru, but I go to the hills to write. nAuthors usually despise adaptations based on their books. You have a film version of Scandinavistan being produced by Hepp Film Co. How are you feeling about it? I feel quite happy about the idea that somebody would like to spend time and money on making a movie based on one of my novels. The producer has asked me to do a first screenplay ver-

sion, which would of course mean that I have an opportunity to shape the film. And then, of course, it is a well-known fact that a novel and a film can never be exactly the same — the film will base itself on the most cinematic parts of the novel, and develop them into an entity of its own. I guess it is like being a parent and seeing your kids grow up: they will never turn into exactly what you thought they’d be, right? nIs there a story behind your nom de plume Zac O’ Yeah? Are you scared Galbatroix will enslave you (and your dragon) if you divulge your true name? Not really, only a little. It really all started when I was in a pop group, in my 20s, and it seemed cool to have a cool name on the album cover. Later it became a trademark: if I write something people enjoy reading, they’ll remember the name, and next time they go to the shop they’ll say to themselves that “OK, I’ll buy a Thums-Up, some Mysore Pak and a Zac O’Yeah.” But seriously, having a pen name is a bit like having an office to go to. As a writer, when you mostly work from home, it is tricky to sepa-

f you happen to be one of those who picked up a Steig Larsson and then got bitten by the Scandinavian crime fiction bug, well, we don’t blame you. But a few books down the way, you will begin to see threads of

commonality between them all. The protagonist, for instance, is unglamorous, unmemorable and most often, quite unlovable. The plot is slow-moving and falls together into place only at the very end. The landscape, locations and settings are utterly unfamiliar and perplexing at

rate work hours from your leisure hours, one can easily get lost on the way between the kitchen and the study, so the pen name becomes like… ah, Okay, now I am at work. And then when I go on holiday I can leave that author identity in my study and just be a normal random tourist lolling on the beach in Goa, if you see what I mean. nWe are now churning out writers at the same rate as engineers or doctors. A reason to worry or rejoice? Rejoice!!! India has a very good literary future ahead as far as I can tell. More and more people are reading books (judging from how new bookshops keep opening all the time), and writing books as well — and I keep hearing about creative writing workshops, which seem to be a fairly recent phenomenon here in India. Every other person I meet is thinking of writing the great Indian novel. The publishers I meet at literary events are all very upbeat and enthusiastic, and full of ideas. So having a lot of stuff going on at the same time, in a culture that encourages creative writing, means that there will inevitably be a handful of

literary gems published over time.

nWhat’s with the sudden boom in Swedish/Scandinavian crime fiction? I guess it is one of those fads. A couple of decades ago everybody was raving about the Magic Realism of Latin American writers, now the flavour of the season is grim Swedish police procedurals with cops who eat too much pizza, get cardiovascular problems, have bypass surgery — you must admit that it is a refreshing times. But that is where Zac’s Once Upon A Time in Scandinavistan scores. The crime thriller is set in the vermin infested streets of Gautampuri Pradesh (erstwhile Gothenburg), a place where Malayali songs are played on the radio, Hindi is spoken commonly and native Swedes rub shoulders with Indians, paper-pushing babus rule the roost and tandoori moose is the preferred late-night meal. Bang in the middle of this is our hero Herman Barsk — a Public Intelligence Officer— who discovers four corpses in the Tandoori oven of his favourite all-night food joint — Tandoori

change compared to suave James Bond type goon-busters. I think that Scandinavian crime writers, who tend to be somewhat boring, have ushered in a more sensible kind of fictional detective who is not a flamboyant superhero, but a normal dry person who does the best he or she can to save the world, and, unlike James Bond, not always with complete success. My own fictional character, Herman Barsk of Once Upon a Time in Scandinavistan, is perhaps a good illustration of the extremely flawed Scandinavian policeman. nHaving travelled the lengthand-breadth of the country, and having lived here for over four years, are there things about India that still surprise /amuse /annoy you or has it simply become... home? Actually, I migrated from Sweden to India more than 10 years ago. One can still get surprised every day by the kindness of strangers, amused by the anarchy and of course there’s the occasional annoyance… but India is never boring!!! And maybe that is why I do feel so much at home in India. Moose. As his investigation unravels, he finds himself caught in the midst of a revolution that threatens not just his life but the future of Gautampuri. Once Upon a Time is graphic in its lurid detailing and Zac is unrelenting in depicting the dystopian landscape of his imagined universe. The violent satire is juxtaposed with rip-roaringly funny (bordering on the lewd) commentary on the contrast between a mono-cultural setting ala Sweden and the possibilities and impossibilities of a multicultural society of India. All in all, this is a book to which we are willing to give a thumbs up!

Exploring complexities

y coming out story is not a pleasant one. After coming out to my parents, they cut off all contact with me. There was all the expected melodrama and emotional upheaval that you see in a

typical Indian movie, except this time it was real and unlike the soaps on television, I could neither fast forward, pause nor skip any scenes. The coming out story is not just full of tales of woe. It also has elements of joy, sheer relief and the feeling of absolute

belongingness to a group of people that do not judge me for my sexual preference. They understand when I tell them about my partner and do not wonder if we are business partners. Now I do not cringe when insensitive folk look at me questioningly when I hold

18

my partner tight, while she drives me around the city. I realise that coming out of the closet is just that. It is coming out from a confined space that has slowly started to bind and suffocate you. It is like the flood of water that is unleashed from a dam, and is now without restraint. The word lesbian no longer sounds like an abuse. It makes me realise that I have accepted who I am and how I feel is neither a choice nor a chromosomal anomaly. It is as much a part of me as my two eyes, two hands and my crooked teeth. It is a part of me that makes me whole.

Getting your parents’ consent No matter how easygoing your parents are, news of that special someone is bound to raise the red flag

Isha Mukoo isha.m@postnoon.com

T

hey say love is a beautiful feeling till it happens to your child. While the definitions of love may have changed and a relationship might have gained more acceptance these days, parental reaction remains standard. No matter how easy-going your mum or dad is, when you first tell them that you are dating somebody, you’re bound to be met with a negative reaction. It almost always takes parents a little getting-usedto before they can accept that

their child is in a relationship. This, despite the fact that theirs might have been a love marriage. It is not surprising then that despite the progress we’ve made in terms of parent-child equations, children are still rather sceptical about letting their folks in on their relationship status. But the one thing that can successfully bridge this gap, say youngsters, is an open channel of communication and some understanding from both parties. Shvveta Walia, an employee of Google, who was in a relationship, says there are two sides to this argument. “I believe it varies with every parent. Sometimes parents become overprotective, which is not really good as it suffocates the child and strains relations. Parents also need to trust kids to make the right choice after they’ve reached a certain age. On the flip side, there are youngsters who simply don’t know what they want, leading parents to worry,” she says, adding, “Communication is the key to perfect bonding. If they don’t trust you, it is your job to

patiently explain your stand to them, which is what I did when I told them about my relationship.” For others choosing the middle path is a more favourable option. Vivek Rao, a student, says, “Both parents and children are right in their own way. When we get into a relationship, we tend to forget other important things in life and the focus shifts to that special someone. This might affect your career. We, as youngsters, need to get our priorities right.” Control issues, according to some youngsters, is the reason for opposition by most parents. Kunal Aggarwal (name changed), says, “It’s all about control. Parents hate to lose control of their children. And this being an important decision in their child’s lives, they would obviously want some control over it; probably because they (parents) have been brought up that way. Also, parents have seen relationships falling apart, so they are justified in their concern. On the other hand, they should also make the effort to understand what their child is going through. Given our cul-

ture, this rift is bound to exist. I am in a relationship and I am going to go ahead with it and I want my folks to understand and trust me.” Often, parents out of concern for their kids, end up being overprotective. This results in rebellion. Bhavna Ashar, a lecturer, who has a teenage daughter and a son, feels one needs to give their children that chance to experience things on their own. “After a particular age, you cannot stop your child from doing certain things. The more you pressurise them, the more they will rebel. On

the contrary, if you give them a little freedom, they will be much more sensible,” she shares. “After all, life’s experiences are the best teachers.” Irene Swaroop, a mother and a youth counsellor, feels parents will always be anxious about any decision their child takes, and says. “Parents are always apprehensive about everything to do with their children. All said and done, most youngsters want to be in a relationship only because it’s cool to do so. But it’s better to take things slow. Parents also should not be too rigid about things.”

GOOD CAUSE

Two actors in the Telugu film industry, Kamal Kamaraju and Haleem Khan are putting their talents to use for a good cause. We find out more about their lives off-screen and what art means to them Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

G

one are the days when actors dedicated all their time to their profession. The new breed of actors believes in standing up for a cause, be it supporting the anti-corruption movement or associating themselves with various good causes. Now, two actors Kamal Kamaraju and Haleem Khan are putting their creative talents to use for a good cause. Kamal Kamaraju has been part of films like Godavari, Avakai Biryani, Kalavaramaye Madilo and Virodhi. Apart from being an actor, he’s an architect, a photographer and a painter. The multifaceted artist has come up with a new series of paintings named ‘Minnu’ which are going to be exhibited at Muse Art Gallery, Marriot in Hyderabad from January 7 onwards. “I have always been interested in painting. When I was young, my mother wanted to exhibit my paintings in Ravindra Bharati; however, I wasn’t completely satisfied with what I had done,” Kamal Kamaraju says. After making his debut in Chatrpathi, he played an important role in Sekhar Kammula’s Godavari. “When I was shooting for Godavari, I drew a series of paintings inspired from the locales around me,” he adds. So how did he begin painting his latest series Minnu? “It started as part of my journey in art. It is part of my efforts to understand a method of social consciousness within my explorations. I wanted to paint about issues that matter, especially issues regarding the girl child and women. I have drawn as many as 30 paintings on Minnu,” Kamal says. He’s collaborating with CAP Foundation, which strives to link learning and livelihood for disadvantaged young people and women. All the proceeds from the art show and sale of limited-edition calendars based on Kamal’s paintings will be donated to the CAP Foundation. If Kamal is using colours, then there is Haleem Khan using dance as a medium to help out. Kuchipidi dancer-turned-actor, Haleem Khan, who was recently seen in Nuvvila, is going to perform at various places in Hyderabad on January 7. “I am going to perform at an orphanage, a home for the aged and another home for differently-abled children,” says Khan. He’s quite sentimental about the dance recital

since it’s his first performance of 2012. “I wanted to do something different for them. Instead of just paying a visit, I came up with this idea to entertain them in my own way. I am sure it’s going to be a memorable day for all of them,” he adds. Having performed at more than 500 shows in both India and abroad, Haleem Khan is quite confident that he can engage the audience with his performance. “I might even make the aged dance with me,” he smiles, adding, “Since it’s not possible for all the aged and children to come to a separate venue to see my performance, I decided to go to their own homes and make them feel that I am one among them.” I Volunteer Centre, a Hyderabadbased NGO, is supporting him for the show.

rakash Raj is undoubtedly the most popular choice when it comes to playing character roles in films. Despite his acting committments, the actor is also planning to direct films. We hear that he is going to remake the superhit Malayalam film, Salt N Pepper in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada. The film had released last year and went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2011. The original version was directed by Aashiq Abu and had Lal, Asif Ali, Shwetha Menon and Mythili in lead roles. The film will go on floors soon after the release of Prakash Raj’s upcoming bilingual film, Dhoni.

eteran singer, SP Balasubramaniam has appealed to leading production houses in Tollywood to take the competition from dubbed films head on, instead of restricting them. “We have to introspect about the quality of films being made in Telugu. Commercial films are important, but if we can make at least few films leaving aside the financial implications, then I am sure we can deliver great cinema. Producers should take

a cue from Saibabu Yalamanchali, who recently produced Sri Rama Rajyam. I am proud of playing a small part in this magnum opus,” SP Balu said. Over the last few months, a section of Telugu film industry has been demanding a restriction on the number of theatres alloted for dubbed films. Whether SP Balasubramaniam’s words strike a chord with anyone in the industry or not, remains to be seen.

uri Jagannadh is a content man these days. After completing the shooting of his upcoming film, The Businessman, the director is quite confident that the film will strike a chord with the people. “You’ll see a brand new Mahesh in the film. He has matured a lot as an actor in the past few years. His voice has changed and I was bowled over by his performance. People shouldn’t expect yet another Pokiri from this film. There are no comedians; Mahesh Babu himself is entertainment in The Businessman,” Puri Jagannadh said. The film narrates the story of a guy who wants to become a don in Mumbai’s underworld. “The hero is extremely shrewd in the film. Mahesh Babu’s characterisation is really good,” he said. The film was supposed to release on January 11; however, it has been postponed to January 13 to coincide with the long weekend in the US. The Tamil and Malayalam versions are going to release two weeks later.

The Imitation Job Players is an official remake of The Italian Job and as much as we have learnt to love the original, with Players , we realise that it was a job taken not so seriously

C

harlie Mascarenhas (Abhishek Bachchan), is a chartered accountant who learns from a DVD that gold worth `100,000 crore is going to be transported from Russia to Romania in a train (chartered planes anyone?). For this, he approaches veteran robber Victor Dada (Vinod Khanna), who is in jail but that does not deter him from dispensing free criminology gyan to cops. Victor then introduces our bad boy Charlie to the rest of the crew which includes a world famous illusionist Ronnie (Bobby Deol), with a peculiar past, Spider (Neil Nitin Mukesh), a master in ethical hacking, a full-time automobile expert, part-time item girl Riya (Bipasha Basu), Victor’s techie daughter Naina (Sonam Kapoor), Sunny (Omi Vaidya) a make-up and prosthetics expert and Bilal the deaf explosives expert (oxymoron, much?) To save face from being termed as “rip-off”, Bollywood directors are terming their desi versions of Hollywood flicks as official remakes. It’s like the Chinese trying to recreate an original Prada and Gucci. At first, they look the same but eventually the threads start wearing out. Directors Abbas- Mustan are an oversmart, excited duo who have tampered with the original script beyond repair by adding unnecessary nuances and

cretinous songs. The Italian Job, the original one from 1969 with Michael Caine and with Mark Wahlberg in 2003, was touted to be one of the best original gold heist adventure movies and Players seems to be taking a royal dig at it. A badly written adaptation with a dissatisfying script, it fails to provide us with no definitive explanation about how a major international bank robbery is planned. The script lacked the much required energy and entertainment that is expected of an action-packed potboiler. Many of the characters kept resurrecting even when they were shot with bullets. Invincibility formula, anyone? . The music fails to impress and with too many twists, the film transforms into a predictable cat and mouse game. The cinematography is splendid with the movie being shot in Russia and New Zealand and parts of it, for the very first time in Siberia. Much of the cast looked displaced and were trying to fit in with some of them too anxious to show the middle finger. Neil Nitin Mukesh, with his chiseled looks does a decent job along with Omi Vaidya,

whose one liners, placed scantily through the film, does get a few chuckles from the audience. The first half of the film is watchable but the second half has us stifling a yawn. Like Wahlberg said, “no imagination.” SANA MIRZA

They don’t even make any sense and they sound funny to me,” Mahek’s brother Vikramjit Chahal said in a statement. “Mahek on her own will left Norway so that she could make a career for herself in Bollywood, 10 years ago. Even my elder sister will come from Norway to join Mahek in the finale of Bigg Boss and I will be returning to the country on the finale myself.” “All of it is just fake like the people spreading these rumours who can’t mind their own business and let others live and be successful in life,” he added.IANS

ctress Vidya Balan says that she believes in the institution of marriage and cannot avoid it for long, but she is not thinking about it right now. “My career is going good. I am very happy. Emotionally and mentally I am in a very happy space, by God’s grace. I am not thinking about marriage as of now, but I’m sure a right time will come for it also. I believe in the institution of marriage. I will not ignore it for a longer time, but yeah, for now, I am keeping it aside. I will definitely get married,” said Vidya. The actress is said to be dating CEO of UTV movies Siddharth Roy Kapoor.

After the super success of her Dirty Picture, Vidya is promoting her forthcoming film Kahaani, directed by Sujoy Ghosh. She will also be seen in Nikhil Advani’s Chand Bhai opposite Akshaye Khanna. Vidya admits it’s the greed for good roles that keeps her on her toes. “I am a very greedy actor. I want to play different people, I want to do different kinds of films. Even if it means that the hero is the protagonist, as long as I have enough to do in the film I am more than happy doing it,” the 33-year-old actress said during the launch of the first look of her new film Kahaani. The glamour behind the glitz

Uncertainity in acting is scary says, Rajesh Khera

R

ajesh Khera, popular for his role as gay designer Maddy in TV show Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, says actors live on the edge because of uncertainties in their career and the feeling is scary. “As an actor we live on the edge. We are not sure of our next move. If one serial gets over, we don’t know when we will get our next project. So you are only earning for that period of time,” Rajesh said. “All I can say is I have survived somehow. A lot of people have not survived. The industry is all about new concepts and new faces, especially in the television sector. All new television soaps have new faces. Where do people like us go? This means life for an actor is limited; for four or five years only. Unless you are Ram Kapoor or Ronit Roy, who, for some reason have had an extension. It’s very scary,” he added. He came to Mumbai from Pune in 1993. After an initial struggle, he was seen in serials like Tara, Swabhimaan, Raahein, Raahat, Ithihaas and Saaya. “Honestly, I can’t relate to today’s programming and all these soaps. I sometimes won-

der ‘Rajesh where do you fit into it?... I don’t fit into that at all’. No doubt some of the characters are very interesting and strong, masses are watching it, channels are getting TRPs and they are getting money. I guess I don’t represent the masses so I really cannot voice an opinion and can only speak for myself. I feel 25 per cent of the television content is good, while 75 per cent is rubbish,” said Rajesh. Apart from serials, Rajesh made his journey into films and featured in Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa, Josh, Taal, Tum Bin and Samay. He feels that herd mentality is quite common among the makers of soaps and serials. “If one comes with a regional concept, others also come with similar shows. If one person shows saas-bahu, others follow the suit. I don’t like this culture. But then it’s all for the masses and their opinion works. I feel they are not open or mature enough to accept new concepts,” he added. IANS

irst the good news: despite earlier reports to the contrary, a rep for Jeremy Renner tells E! News that the actor did not suffer any injuries — minor or otherwise — when a bar brawl broke out in a Phuket, Thailand, pub on Thursday night. The horrible news: a member of the party he was travelling with was left in a serious condition. The Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol star nearly found himself in the middle of a brutal bar brawl when six staffers of the resort town’s Rachada Pub attacked his party, with one of the attackers horrifically wielding a homemade rotor ax during the fight.

Alien Attack Another sci-fi flick centered on the post-apocalyptic phenomenon that falls flat on its face

W

ith the Doomsday conspiracy doing the rounds in 2012, it’s but inevitable that we will see a lot many movies centered on the end-of-the-world and annihilation-of-mankind themes hit the screens this year. That The Darkest Hour is at best a mediocre run-of-the-mill sci flick is bad enough, but following the likes of high-octane action-packed thrillers like Mission Impossible 4 and Sherlock Holmes, makes it seem even worse. Added to that is of course our grouse of not seeing big names like War Horse and The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo release in the screens here. But make do with what we have, shall we? Let’s see. Oh yeah, the plot. American buddies Sean (Emile Hirsch) and Ben (Max Minghella) travel to Moscow on business. When they are undercut by a competitor Skyler (Joel

Kinnaman), they go to a nightclub to drown their sorrows in a bottle and be comforted by PYTs Natalie and Anne (Olivia Thirlby and Rachael Taylor) when invisible alien thingamabobs descend from the sky, soaking up all electricity and vaporising any biological entity they can find, turning humans into piles of ash. Needless to say, our band of pretty faces now have to figure a way to save the world. To give credit where it’s due, the digital wizardry (explaining its $40-million budget) and cuttingedge visual effects are impressive. But that’s the best you can expect. The characters are so flat and unmemorable that they make the invisible alien thingies seem more interesting in comparison. The plot is promising on paper but fails to deliver. The climax is exciting simply because the credits are nearing. But the screenplay, which is the biggest letdown, comes from Jon Spaihts, whose only excuse we are hoping, is that he is doing a better job on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. So should you watch this movie? If you want to go test your patience, most definitely. Otherwise, yeah, no. PADMINI C

Sony may finance Rogen’s film W

hile it feels like it took forever to get going, Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse is finally becoming a real movie. Now titled simply The Apocalypse, the project got a big boost late last year when Seth Rogen said that the movie would be going into production in 2012 and that Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, James Franco and Craig Robinson had joined the cast and will be playing themselves. Now, however, the most important part of filmmaking may be coming together: money. THR has learned that Sony is now in talks to both finance and distribute The Apocalypse. The film will mark the directorial debut of both Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who are best

known as writing partners who produced scripts for Superbad, Pineapple Express, Green Hornet and the upcoming Neighbourhood Watch (they also wrote the script

for The Apocalypse). The story will follow Rogen, Hill, McBride, Franco, Robinson and Jay Baruchel as they are holed up in Franco’s Los Angeles apartment. A source close

to the trade said that the film’s budget will be somewhere in the $30 to $40 million range. There actually have been multiple suitors for the project, but Sony is the leader.

Man strips naked in front row of Alvin And The Chipmunks screening

in talks for takedown film I t’s the graceful, delicate mom from The Tree of Life vs the most repellent terrorist in the world. Guess who wins? Jessica Chastain is in talks to co-star in director Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming film about the death of Osama bin Laden, according to a source close to the project. The actress, who broke big this year in The Tree of Life and The Help, would not play one of the Seal Team 6 members who actually conducted the raid, but instead would take on the role of a field intelligence analyst whose work helps lead to the strike that annihilates him. It would be a rough and tumble change of pace for the actress, who would undergo intense training to play the as-yet-unspecified character. While she’s known for more fragile performances, she showed her tough side as a novice Mossad agent seeking a Nazi war criminal in John Madden’s The Debt. She had a busy 2011, and 2012 looks no different. Chastain, who recently wrapped work on the Guillermo del Tor-produced horror film Mama, will also be making her Broadway debut this year in an adaptation of Henry James’ The Heiress.

T

here are plenty of reasons to avoid seeing Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, namely your

own self-respect and sanity after listening to 90 minutes of high-pitched Chipmunk screenings. So really, you could say that the patrons at a Chicago theater who paid to see Chipwrecked got

what they deserved when a man sitting in the front row stripped naked during a 4pm showing of the film. According to THR, 96 paying customers were witness to the unexpected show, at least until they were ushered out of the theater and offered vouchers while the offender, Edward Brown, was arrested.

As you might expect, his explanation for what he did is even wilder than the action itself; apparently Brown claims that a woman who worked at the theater promised him sex and drugs and told him to wait naked in the front row of the theatre. The woman has yet to be found, and it’s hard to know what’s more implausible — that an actual woman would do such a thing, or that Brown would make up this kind of story.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Mystery man stumps WBA Carmelo stars for NY Knicks

Amir Khan, right, has questioned the presence of a mystery man in a hat, circled, at his defeat to Lamont Peterson. LONDON: A senior World Boxing Association official confessed on Friday that he does not know the identity of a man accused by Amir Khan of interfering with the judges during his contentious defeat by Lamont Peterson. Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, the WBA vice-president, admitted the fedora hat-clad man was “unknown” to his organisation. Khan lost both his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles after home-town fighter Peterson was awarded a controversial split-decision victory following their bout in Washington on December 10.

The 25-year-old had questioned the performance of referee Joe Cooper and aired grievances over alleged inconsistencies with the judges’ scorecards, before turning his attention to the mystery individual at ringside. Khan has already appealed against the defeat, but on Thursday he took to Twitter to draw attention to the unidentified man’s actions during the fight. Mendoza confirmed to Britain’s Press Association that the WBA will investigate Khan’s comments and appeared to give the fighter hope of a reprieve when he

revealed that the man in the images was not known to the governing body. “I am going over the facts but this man is also unknown to us,” he said. Khan appeared on Sky Sports News on Friday and said he would prefer a re-match to having the result of the fight over-turned. “That’s what we want,” said the 2004 Olympic silver-medallist. “I’ve asked for the fight, I’ve asked for the re-match and I’m not getting an answer back from Lamont Peterson’s team. “We’ve offered him a lot of money, there’s a lot of money been put on the table for him to take the re-match. “I really think the whole world thinks I deserve this rematch because I know I was treated unfairly. I’ve asked for the reason and I’m getting no answer. That’s the reason I’m getting desperate now. “That’s the reason I went on Twitter and I put the tweets up. I just want another chance somewhere neutral just to prove to my fans that I am the real champion and I won the fight.” Later on Friday, Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer, while talking to Sky Sports News, demanded the result of the bout be changed to a no-contest.

Carmelo Anthony reacts after making a basket during the second half. WASHINGTON: Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points, including a go-ahead threepointer with 15 seconds left, as the New York Knicks rallied for a 99-96 NBA victory over winless Washington on Friday. “It was a hard-fought win,” said Anthony, who hurt his lower back with some three minutes to

play. “We needed this one after starting off slow once again.” The Wizards had jumped out to a 32-18 lead after one quarter, and led by as many as 16 in the second period. But a game that featured nine lead changes saw them finish the night still the NBA’s only team without a victory in the lockout-shortened season. Amare Stoudemire scored 23 points for the Knicks and Tyson Chandler added 12 points and 15 rebounds. Nick Young led the Wizards with 24 points, but was off-target with a three-point attempt with two seconds remaining. Stoudemire corralled the rebound to end the contest. John Wall scored 22 for Washington and Andray Blatche added 15 but they could not prevent the Wizards from falling to 0-7. Despite the victory, Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni admitted his team still have plenty of things to work on. “We’re a long ways from being very good,” he said. “But we have the spirit and we are fighting, so that’s good.”

Everybody loves Pup Relief for India: Pattinson’s out

A

ustralia’s young fast-bowling spearhead James Pattinson is out of the remainder of the Test series against India after scans revealed the early signs of stress fractures in the metatarsal bone of his left foot. He has been replaced in the squad for the Perth Test by Mitchell Starc - the only change to the squad that was selected for Sydney. Ryan Harris is favoured to win a recall to the XI after making his own return to fitness. Pattinson bowled throughout the Sydney Test but complained of pain in his left foot towards the end of the match. Scans revealed the injury, which the team physio Alex Kountouris called an “early stage bone stress injury of the metatarsal bone of the left foot”.

We’ll come back strong: Dhoni

M

S Dhoni believes that this challenging period, during which India have slumped to six straight loss in away Tests, will help him and the team as a whole build character, reported ESPN cricinfo. “In sport you are not destined to only win,” he said when asked of how difficult it has been to cope with the trough, especially following his early success as captain. “You’ll lose at times. You will face difficult times. That improves you as an individual, and as a skipper. “If everything comes easily to you, then you don’t really appreciate the kind of hard work that goes into it [winning]. This is a phase where I think the team will get stronger. Of course it won’t reflect in the result right now, but overall it will really help us know [recognise] the importance of winning and what needs to be done to keep the winning phase going.”

SYDNEY: Captain Michael Clarke was Saturday praised as the force behind Australia’s second Test victory over India, in which he scored a triple century and took the crucial wicket of Sachin Tendulkar. Australia won the second Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground by an innings and 68 runs on Friday, helped by Clarke’s unbeaten first innings total of 329 runs, which allowed the skipper to declare at a massive 659. Not content with his efforts with the bat, Clarke then gave himself the ball on Friday, claiming Tendulkar with one of his left-arm spin deliveries when the master batsman was on 80. The ball, which enticed Tendulkar forward to get a thin edge and was caught by Mike Hussey at first slip, one again robbed the “Little Master” of

Is there anything he can’t do? Sydney’s Daily Telegraph claiming his 100th international century. “Is there anything he can’t do?” read a headline in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph above a photograph of a jubilant Clarke celebrating Tendulkar’s dismissal. “Few people have ever upstaged Sachin Tendulkar. No one is likely to do it more completely than Michael Clarke in this 100th SCG Test,” wrote Malcolm Conn in the tabloid. “Is there nothing Clarke can’t do as captain? A triple century one day, the prized wicket of Tendulkar the next.” The fall of Tendulkar’s wicket was an important turning point in the game, leaving the Indians at 4-271. The tourists managed to get to 400 but were all out with runs still to chase on Australia’s first innings total. “He took only one wicket yesterday, but it may as well have been five, for when Sachin Tendulkar falls, a trapdoor opens beneath the innings,” wrote Peter Lalor in The Australian. Other commentators continued to compare the Australian skipper to the late Don Bradman.

‘Quitting T20 made me a better player’ SYDNEY: Australia captain Michael Clarke says his decision to retire from T20 cricket at the start of 2011 has made him a better player in the longer formats of the game. Clarke had a dream Sydney Test, scoring a monumental 329 not out, taking the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar and captaining Australia to an emphatic win over India to go 2-0 up in the series. Clarke’s own form has been on the up. Since becoming captain and retiring from T20, Clarke has amassed 819 Test runs at an average of 68.25 and hit four hundreds. “The greatest thing about the Twenty20

competitions is it is very individual, each individual player has the opportunity to make his own decision, and I think the T20 in Australia has been outstanding,” Clarke said. “I think I made the right decision to stand down from T20 cricket internationally and to focus on my one-day and Test cricket. I really thought I had to improve my game, to try to become the player I want to be, to become the best player I can possibly be.” “I don’t know what my results say or my statistics over the last 12 months, but I feel my game is better now than it was 12 months ago, that is for sure.”

We must kick losing habit I

ndia slid to their sixth defeat abroad in Sydney with not many excuses to offer. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s brave decision to bat first with an out-of-form outfit backfired. By the end of the first day, Australia were setting up the foundation for their massive innings and 68 runs victory. Sadly, India’s batting has to be described as spineless. How else can one justify a batting line-up which boasts over a 100 centuries among them? It’s certainly not technical. But lack of application and understanding of situations it certainly is. Rahul Dravid batted brilliantly in England and at home recently. And what got him those runs were his positive attitude. He was the right mixture of caution and aggression which made him so pleasing to watch. Now he seemed to have got into a shell. The drives have been replaced by prods which have resulted the loss of his stumps on three occasions. Of course, one cannot question Dravid’s commitment. There is some confusion in his mind which he needs to sort out. Admittedly, the first session on the opening day is always difficult to bat on. The Australian

bowlers kept the ball up and caused damage because the Indian batsmen showed hardly any intent to apply themselves. They were drawn into strokes which either gave the slips catching practice or sent the stumps rattling. A score of 191 meant India were already out of the match. This scoreline was not of any help even to the now improved bowling attack. In contrast, the Australian batsmen capitalised after losing early wickets. Captain Michael

India’s Virender Sehwag leaves the field after being dismissed by Australia’s Ben Hilfenhaus on day three of the second cricket Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday. Clarke scored an unbeaten 329, and set up Australia’s total domination of the Test. This has to be Clarke’s match. Coming in at three for 37, he unleashed sizzling cover drives and deft flicks which were a joy to watch. Clarke’s declaration by putting self before records underlines what a fine captain he has become.

Clarke’s confidence rubbed off on Ricky Ponting who scored his first century in two years and silenced his critics. Michael Hussey also got into the act and assured himself a few more Tests. India showed a glimmer of what they can be in the second knock. The runs came briskly at the start before the loss of Dravid meant shutters down for

unknown reasons. Gautam Gambhir hit form but scratched around with Sachin Tendulkar at the close. The first session of the fourth day was the best India did on the tour. Tendulkar played brilliantly. His cutting and driving were sheer masterclass. But as his wont, he gave his wicket away to Clarke when nearing the elusive

milestone. VVS Laxman played fluently and positively too. But after that came the same old story except for a dashing innings from Ravichandran Ashwin. India’s defeats are now becoming a habit. Hopefully, the short break before Perth will bring with it some positive vibes. Don’t bank on it too much, though.

iverpool captain Steven Gerrard put more than two months of frustration behind him to score on his first start since October as his side beat Oldham 5-1 in the third round of the FA Cup. After three substitute appearances following recovery from an ankle infection the 31-year-old finally reclaimed his place in the team and expertly dispatched the penalty which put his side into a lead they did not surrender despite a valiant effort from their League One opponents. Gerrard did the same thing back in October when, on his first start after six months out after a groin operation, he scored against Manchester United. On that occasion he
