GOVT REFUSES TO CHECK OUT CHICKS The arrival of migratory birds this winter may be a reason to worry as neighbouring Orissa has confirmed samples of dead birds testing positive for avian flu and has issued a state-wide alert. Though the alert is out, our State is twiddling its thumbs over protocol. "There is a protocol to enforce measures in the event of an alert from the Centre on bird flu. We haven't received any alert so far,” said G Sudhir, special chief secretary (health).

r Sudhakar Rao, who had lodged a complaint of theft from his home on Jubilee Hills Road No. 81 in the last week of December and reportedly implicated his driver Bhaskar Rao, is said to have paid `10 lakh compensation to Venkateshwari, the surviving wife of the driver. Jubilee Hills police inspector K Narasing Rao told Postnoon that some monetary help has been rendered to the bereaved family. Though he did not mention the sum given to the family, it is reliably learnt that `10 lakh is given. Assistant commissioner of police L Shankar Reddy confirmed the monetary helps and said the cases — one on theft and the other of suspected death — are still under investigation and the police are await-
ing the post mortem report and forensic report to proceed further. Meanwhile, the police who
had earlier claimed that the surviving daughter, Usha, had given a statement how her father was being tortured, went back now, saying there was no such statement. Nor did the police receive a suicide note, it is said. Bhaskar Rao, 40, and Venkateshwari, 35, hail from Amalapuram in West Godavari district. Postnoon found out that Venkateshwari, on recovery from her poisoning, has returned to her village. Their daughter Usha is with her. The doctor who had been unavailable after the incident has joined duty but when contacted on phone his office said he was engaged in surgery and was not available. It is also learnt that some social organisation had tried to intervene to decide the amount of compensation but it was fobbed off. Who decided the sum of compensation was not revealed.

t first glance, one may think Naveen Babu is a small time Chinese bandi owner, working hard to make ends meet. But Naveen is much more than that. In 1992, when he set up his small Chinese bandi little did he know that one day he would be a proud owner of several food joints in the city. Today, he runs Akshita Biryani Point, a tiffin centre, a Mughalai and Indian food joint, catering services and a mobile Chinese food stall. And he owes these achievements to bone-breaking labour and determination. “Studies never interested me and I had to quit school early due to family responsibilities. I worked as an assistant chef at Belsons Taj for seven years. Working there had been a short term goal. Having my own joint was my real aim. But the Taj days helped me in learning the technical aspects of cooking and presentation,” says a beaming Naveen. Naveen is a true blue Hyderabadi, who believes that

very month, the GHMC holds a ‘face-to-face’ programme where few members of the public personally meet the mayor or talk to him over phone and put forth their grievances. On Saturday, new mayor Majid Hussain attended his first ‘face to face’ meet and by all accounts it turned to be a disturbing experience for him. During the meet he received a call which warned him saying “Mayor ban ke paise nai kamana, sheher ko jannat banana” (you’ve become Mayor not to make money but to make the City a paradise). The caller whose identity has not been revealed to the media also mentioned that he has great hopes on the new mayor and the mayor should justify the trust he has placed on him. The caller also complained about the numerous problems the City is suffering from and advised the mayor to follow methods which were implemented by the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad during his rule. The call left Majid shaken and his expression revealed how bewildered he felt. He disclosed that he has been receiving calls of similar nature which advised him to resist corruption and make sure there is tangible development in the City. And his constant reply to all such calls has been a yes. Jameel, a car driver by profession, called from the mayor's own division, Ahmednagar, and reeled out a list of grievances being faced by his colony, Sayyad Nagar. He sought an immediate solution for the drinking water problem and a plea to improve the conditions of the roads. Another caller criticised

Liquor dealers scared of govt entry The war between the government and the liquor barons is taking a new turn with the CM planning an all-party meet on a new excise policy POLICY U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com
T
aking the war against liquor barons a step further, the State government is thinking aloud of a new excise policy, it is learnt. With pressure mounting from various quarters to do away with the auction of liquor shops, the government wants to study the excise policy of other states. While women are threatening to close down the shops and want the ban on liquor in a phased manner, the government is thinking on various alternatives it is reported. Minister for excise Mopidevi Venkatramana told Postnoon that the government was not against holding an all-party meet. He found fault with the Opposition
for harping on the AntiCorruption Bureau list. He also said that Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has allocated `40 crore for creating awareness against liquor consumption. Soon after receiving the ACB list, chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has suggested to the minister for excise to come up with a policy which does not just focus on revenues but helps the dealer
to sell on MRP. He also reminded about the commitment of the Government to implement prohibition in a phased manner across the State. Loksatta leader Jayprakash Narayan wanted the government to take over the liquor business. The ladies of communist groups threatened they would set the arrack shops on fire if they are not closed by the
government immediately. Some wine shop owners fear that the government might take over the liquor business and sell them through department stores. CPI leader Narayana also wanted the government to take over the liquor business, so that the Illicit brewing can be stopped and the deaths can stopped. Insiders say that the drafting of the new excise policy will take longer this time. First, the Government has to study the policies of other States. Secondly, it has to involve all the political parties for a discussion over the policy before it is rolled. It has to convince the liquor shop owners and also the distilleries association. It is learnt that the distilleries association is in favour of government taking over the sales. But in the last 20 years the figures proved that the consumption of liquor has gone up 18 times. The sales figures also have gone up from time to time. The
`15,000 crore
annual revenue the State earns from liquor sales
`60,000 crore
annual turnover in liquor sales in the State
18 times
increase in liquor consumption in the last 20 years
government is getting around `15,000 crore in this business while the overall sales shows the business in the state at around `60,000 crore on annual basis. The controversy over the ACB, the deaths of illicit liquor and the new policy will continue until the government can come up with a policy that could convince the seller and the buyer.
Jagan’s Nizamabad tour generates heat POLITICS A Saye Sekhar Saye@postnoon.com
I
t is not going to be a smooth ride up to Nizamabad for YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday when he goes to the Telangana heartland for his ‘ryhthu deeksha’. Sworn enemies of YSR, including MPs V Hanumantha Rao and Madhu Yaskhi, sought to know why KCR was not giving a call to people to heckle Jagan’s tour. Caught in a bind over the prospect of its ‘behind-thescene’ alliance with Jagan, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi bosses — KCR, his son (KTR) and nephew (Harish Rao) — had said that people of Telangana would question Jagan on his stand on the Telangana issue. Harish Rao said that Kiran Kumar Reddy, Chandrababu Naidu and Jagan Mohan Reddy were all against the separate Telangana formation. People would surely create hurdles to seek their position on the issue. KTR too spoke almost in the same tone and tenor. Convener of Telangana political joint action committee (JAC) Kodandaram gave a clarion call to people to interrupt Jagan’s tour. The TDP, on its part, is celebrating the success of its ‘conquest’ of the TRS bas-
tion, Warangal. It is now waiting with bated breath on whether the Congress would extend a ‘similar cooperation’ to Jagan or would it cause hurdles. Interestingly, Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, who is known to be the bête noire of KCR, spoke two things: One is that the Government must provide necessary security to Jagan in his Nizamabad tour as he is a free citizen of India; and the other is that Jagan has no support base among public and that the TDP was the main rival for the Congress. The second part is seen more as a cover-up to the main objective of appealing to the Chief Minister to insulate Jagan of any disruption. Surprising one and all, former director-general of police Pervaram Ramulu lambasted Naidu for ‘invading Warangal’. Ramulu, who was a member of the TDP, clarified at a press conference that he severed connections with ‘that party three-four years ago’. YSR Congress leader Bajireddy Govardhan, on his part, appealed to ‘people of Telangana’ not to prevent Jagan’s ‘deeksha’, as it was meant for the benefit of farmers. The TRS and T-JAC leaders embedded riders in their statements to bolster the sagging morale of the YSR Congress that any interruption would be token and symbolic with a view to arresting a feeling that they treated Jagan differently compared to Naidu.

A prominent BC leader, Veerappa was a minister in the cabinets of late Jalagam Vengala Rao, Marri Channa Reddy and T Anjaiah. He had handled various portfolios. He was called “Rayalaseema Tiger” by his admirers. Primary education minister S Sailajanath, Revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy and others condoled his death and conveyed their condolences.
his attempt to bind the world with rib tickling laughter is scheduled for seven cities in India, and Hyderabad was one of them. It was amazing to see how Rajiv Satyal, Azhar Usman and Hari Kondabolu with their comedy in Make Chai, Not War did a great job in breaking down religious prejudices, while they shared their experiences growing up as Indian-Americans. Quiz the comedians on how this was conceptualised and Rajiv Satyal says, “This was Azhar’s idea, and he was gracious to include me. He is a Muslim and I am a Hindu, and our third partner is a Hindu too. All of us believe in racial and religious harmony. So we decided to create a platform where people from all communities ages, come under one roof and laugh together.” To that Hari Kondabolu adds, “It’s great to see a newer India, where we see even the older generation laughing at our jokes, something we were sceptical about.” Since they are treading on a dangerous, thin line of religion, are there any nuances that they keep in mind before planning their show? Rajiv says, “Yes, we ensure that we never

Syria: Greenlight for mission
GLOBE AT A GLANCE Rally in Moscow for fair presidential vote
CAIRO: The Arab ministers meeting in Cairo gave a widely criticised observer mission to Syria the greenlight to continue, and pledged to boost the number of monitors as violence on Sunday claimed more lives. The Arab ministerial committee on Syria “has decided to give Arab League observers the necessary time to continue their mission according to the protocol,” which states that the mission is for the duration of one month. The ministers also agreed to increase the number of observers and said they may seek “technical assistance from the United Nations.” Arab ministers were in Cairo to review the observer mission’s record, amid growing calls for the bloc to cede to the United Nations the lead role in trying to end nearly 10 months of bloodshed. The committee also called anew on Syria “to fully and immediately implement its commitments” under the Arab plan, calling on all parties “to
MOSCOW: Around 100 people gathered in Moscow Sunday to call for fair presidential elections in March. The protesters turned out at the “Fed-up” rally in central Bolotnaya Square, the focus of ongoing protests against the disputed parliamentary vote in December. Demonstrators have been calling for fresh polls over alleged voting fraud in favour of the ruling United Russia party.

AFP immediately stop all forms of violence. “The head of the mission, General Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, is to give a report on the League on January 19 on Syria’s compliance of the plan, the ministers said. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem alThani, who chaired the meet-
ing, called on Syria to “take a historic decision.” “We hope there will be decisive steps by the Syrian government to stop the bloodshed,” Sheikh Hamad told reporters after the meeting. He said a report by the observers discussed at the meeting showed that “killing
has been reduced. But even one killing (is too much).” The Arab body stopped short of asking for UN help, but said that Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi would “continue coordinating with the United Nations Secretary General to reinforce the Arab League mission’s technical aspects.” Hamad said the League hoped to raise the number of observers to 300 “within the next few days” from around 163 now deployed in Syria. A team of Arab League monitors has been in Syria since December 26, trying to assess whether President Bashar alAssad’s regime is complying with a peace accord aimed at ending its deadly crackdown on dissent. Critics say it has been completely outmanoeuvred by the government and has failed to make any progress. They have called for the mission to pull out. The Arab League has admitted to mistakes but defended the mission, saying it had secured the release of prisoners and withdrawal of tanks. AFP
Anwar Ibrahim not guilty of sodomy

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim waves to supporters as he enters the court building in Kuala Lumpur AFP
alaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been acquitted of sodomy after a two-year trial. The ruling came as hundreds of Mr Anwar’s supporters waited outside the court in Kuala Lumpur. Mr Anwar, 64, has consistently denied the charges and called them a government bid to cripple his political ambitions and influence. He was jailed for sodomy in 1999 but the conviction was overturned. Sodomy is illegal in Muslim-majority Malaysia.Mr Anwar had been accused of having sex with a former male aide. He would have faced up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
But the judge ruled that the DNA evidence submitted by the prosecution was unreliable. “The court is always reluctant to convict on sexual offences without any corroborative evidence. Therefore, the accused is acquitted and discharged,” Judge Mohamad Zabidin Diah said. Mr Anwar welcomed the verdict. “Thank God justice has prevailed,” he told journalists. “I have been vindicated. To be honest, I am a little surprised.” The allegations against Mr Anwar surfaced just months after elections in 2008, in which he led the opposition to unprecedented gains at the expense of the ruling party. US: Mitt accused of ‘pious baloney’ CONCORD: The Republican presidential hopefuls tried to blunt frontrunner Mitt Romney’s progress but failed to land any telling blows in backto-back weekend debates ahead of Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. Squaring off Sunday in their second televised grilling in just 10 hours, Romney’s rivals seemed determined not to repeat the relatively light bashing they gave him the previous evening, relentlessly laying into the favourite. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, whose ratings have slid in the face of attack ads from Romney’s campaign team in recent weeks, said the
current leader in the Republican race would lose against incumbent Democrat Barack Obama and at one point accused him of pious baloney. Gingrich said the former Massachusetts governor was a moderate with an economic plan so timid it resembles Obama’s. “What Republicans have to ask is, who’s most likely in the long run to survive against the kind of billion-dollar campaign the Obama team is going to run?” Gingrich asked, warning voters in the bellwether state of New Hampshire against thinking that Romney is the most electable candidate. “I do think the bigger the

contrast, the bolder the ideas, the clearer the choice, the harder it is for that billion-dollar campaign to smear his way back into office” in the November 6 presidential election, said Gingrich. “I’m very proud of the conservative record I have,” said Romney, who is seen as the likely nominee if he can make good on a vast lead in opinion polls here and in South Carolina after squeezing out a win in the Iowa caucuses last week. After the New Hampshire primary, Romney's rivals will pour on the attacks in South Carolina, potentially their last shot at loosening his grasp on the nomination. AFP

Right time to invest in City K Prudhvi Raju prudhvi.k@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: Real estate investment is a long-term investment. Unlike the stock market, investor cannot expect immediate returns. Real estate property always appreciates and safe, if the investment is not touched for five years. If someone invests in a property, 10 per cent of the investment goes to value-added tax, service tax and registration charges. Every Rs100 invested in the real estate, costs Rs110 to customers. It is not right to expect appreciation in a year on the costs, says G Yoganand, President, Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI), Andhra Pradesh chapter. Real estate investment is safe at this time in the City. The growth will be at least eight per cent more than the 10 per cent return that an investor gets from the long-
term bank deposits, he says. Talking about the general problems faced by customers, he observes that it is very important to take the guidance of an advocate, before buying a property. Some people may think why to spend Rs4,000 and Rs5000 on advocate. However, one should understand this is the most expensive investment one does in their entire life time. The advocate will help check the agreement like titles of the property; when will it be delivered, whether the property can be mortgaged or not; are there any deviations in the property; whether the builder has permissions to construct a residential property or not. People may think of going for a cheaper option in buying the property. A builder may offer a property at a cheaper price owing to breaking of rules. A builder can cover his costs by constructing an extra floor. But, when a customer chooses that
property keeping the price in mind, he will face difficulties with the over load of people and parking. The customer also will not get a high price in resale because of the deviations, he adds. CREDIA is going to have a code of conduct for all its members. Every member should sign the paper with CREDAI that he will not sell the property unless there is land clearance from the government for the residential purpose. All members should be transparent to customers about their permission status and do agreements accordingly. Members should voluntarily give the title flow, legal opinion and title documents to the customers. If any member fails to commit to the promise that he makes to the customer, or in case of disputes the customers can approach consumer forum of CREDAI, Yoganand says.

PM’s GDP take hits market sentiment MUMBAI: The BSE Sensex fell by over 90 points in opening trade on Monday on sustained selling driven by economic growth concerns amid a weakening trend on other Asian bourses. The 30-share BSE benchmark index, which lost 18.93 points in the previous session, fell further by 90.19 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 15,758.61 in opening trade on Monday. At 10 am, oit lost nearly 130 points. In a similar fashion, the widebased National Stock Exchange Nifty index declined by 27.85 points, or 0.59 per cent, to 4,719.05. Brokers said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that the economy was expected to grow at 7 per cent this fiscal, lower than the earlier forecast of about 9 per cent, dampened the trading sentiment. In addition, a weakening trend in other Asian markets fuelled the selling pressure, they said. Capital goods, metal and banking stocks, which had shown some signs of a
recovery in the past few sessions, slid in early trade on Monday. In the Asia region, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was down by 1.11 per cent. The Indian rupee fell by 13 paise to Rs 52.84 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on Monday, weighed down by a lower opening in the domestic equity market. In addition, gains posted by the US dollar against the euro and other Asian currencies overseas put pressure on the rupee. The domestic currency had notched up a gain of 27 paise to close at a nearly two-week high of Rs 52.71/72 against the dollar in the previous session on Friday amid fresh dollar-selling by exporters. Dealers said a subdued opening in the equity market and dollar gains against the euro on worries about Europe’s debt crisis, besides losses registered by other Asian currencies against the greenback overseas mainly weighed on the rupee sentiment.
DETROIT: Germany’s Volkswagen sold more than eight million vehicles worldwide in 2011, possibly enough to grab the top spot among global automakers for the first time, chairman Martin Winterkorn said on Sunday. VW boosted sales by more than one million vehicles, or 14 per cent, to 8.16 million last year, Winterkorn said on the eve of the annual North American International Auto Show in Detroit. That was likely enough to put it past the champion of the
previous three years, Japan’s Toyota, which found production last year hobbled by the March 11 earthquake-tsunami disaster. But total world sales for General Motors, which held the crown for 77 year until it was snatched by Toyota in 2008, have yet to be reported. VW sales include Volkswagens as well as the group’s Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini brands. The group has aimed at capturing the title of the world’s leading vehicle maker by sales
and profitability by 2018. VW recently bought the heavy truck builder MAN -- sales of which are not included in the 2011 figures -- and is in the process of taking over Porsche. It also owns a 19.9 per cent share of Suzuki of Japan. Winterkorn said he did not expect a recession this year to dampen auto sales. Even if the prospects for Europe are not bright, he said, “We continue to build on the growth of North America and China.” AFP
GM posts record China sales in ’11 SHANGHAI: US auto giant General Motors said on Monday its sales in China hit a record high in 2011, despite a broader slowdown in the world’s largest vehicle market. GM and its joint ventures in China sold around 2.55 million units last year, up more than 8.0 percent from the previous record of 2.35 million in 2010, the company said in a statement. “GM stayed ahead of the competition despite a slowdown in the
growth of industry demand,”Kevin Wale, president of GM China Group, said in the statement. China, which overtook the United States to become the world’s top auto market in 2009, has become increasingly important for global players such as GM and Germany’s Volkswagen Group. In December alone, GM’s sales in China rose 9.8 per cent annually to 196,797 units. The China Association of
Automobile Manufacturers, which tracks auto sales and production in the country, has yet to release figures for all of 2011. However, association officials have forecast that annual growth for the whole of 2011 will be just five per cent. China has moved to protect its domestic auto industry in recent weeks, slapping import tariffs on some US passenger cars and sports utility vehicles. AFP

It is rumoured a rebel cut them off so that he may never wag them. Saif is now in house arrest awaiting trial. The International Criminal Court has demanded that Saif be handed over to The Hague to be tried for atrocities against humanity. The NTC has refused saying the Libyan people would oppose it. Yet the NTC is yet to reveal what plans it has for Saif and the 7,000 followers of Gaddafi. The world will be looking at the New Libya to know if it would grant the rights that it was denied for so long.

hen the grandiose Auto Expo was unveiled on January 5 at Pragathi Maidan in New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh was deeply engrossed in its own internecine feuds. The State virtually had no role to play at the Auto Expo. And, there is hardly any semblance of anybody being bothered about it, leave alone envisaging one. On 23 March, 2011, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy told a ‘secret’ to his subjects — people of the State who did not elect him to the post. A car company had evinced interest in setting up a `6,000-crore manufacturing unit in AP. He chose the ground-breaking ceremony of Mahindra & Mahindra’s tractor unit at Zaheerabad in Medak district as the forum to drop this hint on the car project, hurtling past all hurdles, was arriving, at last. He also went on to announce that the car company would communicate its decision on the setting up of the unit in June. “Till then, let it be a suspense,” he said then. But typical of a politician that he is, Kiran did not disclose June of which year it would be. So, the secret remained as it is and even forgotten. Though I still wish it should finally bear fruit one day, I could not verify as to which was the company that acted furtive with the Chief Minister. So, who has taken whom for a ride is anybody’s guess. Kiran is not the first one. His predecessors Chandrababu Naidu and YS Rajasekhara Reddy too meddled with the automobile industry that never considered Andhra Pradesh as a home to any of their manufacturing units. It has helped us to understand the problems these women face and why they have resorted to these means of livelihood. We now empathise with them. Seish Derra Uppal

At least, YSR appeared to me so, even as his cronies shamelessly dusted their rumps. The chief of city’s police force has been always in the news for some good initiative or other. I loved his interview on Postnoon. AK Khan has rightly pointed out that the responsibility of ensuring discipline in youngsters is not the job of the police but the parents. Parents should desist from showering them with money and expensive gifts with no strings of responsibility attached. One should set his house in order first before expecting transformation in the society.
Though I don’t support drunken drivers, Siva Balaji’s behaviour when he was caught by the police sets a n example for cooperation between people and the law enforcers. It made things easy for everyone. He learned his lesson and the whole episode was hassle free. On the other hand Sunil Narayan made an ass of himself and landed in police lockup. One advice to Sunil: Play by the rules if you think you can’t let your precious ego suffer punctures.

AGEING AT 45
ver wondered why as a kid you found it so easy to retain everything you learnt, while now as an adult it is a lot harder to recall what you did just last week? You can blame your brain. According to a recent study, cognitive ageing sets in
tive ageing are at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia later in life. “A child at the age of 2 easily picks up languages and within a year and a half can be conversant in it. However, an adult will find that he cannot get that degree of fluency in the same time frame. This is because the brain’s ability to learn new things is directly dependant on
from the age of 45, as opposed to the earlier belief that it set in at 60. Conducted by researchers from the Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Population Health in France and University College London in the UK the study surveyed more than 7,000 people over a 10-year period. During this period, the subjects, aged between 45 and 70, were periodically tested for their cognitive functions. The study also states that those who show signs of cogni-
the number of neurons and the connections they make. This begins to decline with age and it is a natural process,” says Dr Amitav Ray, consultant neurosurgeon at Apollo Hospital. While City doctors agree that there is truth to the finding, they reveal that lifestyle habits play a major role in this cognitive decline of the mind. “Lifestyle habits play a major role in cognitive ageing in people. For instance,

people with high homocysteine levels, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, smokers etc are at a much higher risk of rapid cognitive ageing and related problems later in life. The reason being, these ailments reduce the blood flow to the brain, which causes the brain to deteriorate,” says Dr Sudhir Kumar, consultant neurologist at Apollo Hospital. Also since these ailments usually set in when a person is in his late 30s or 40s, it explains why the study proves that cognitive ageing sets in around that time. Another contributing factor, doctors say is when the brain is not stimulated often enough. For instance, older people generally tend to live alone, once their kids have settled elsewhere or they’ve lost their spouse. As a result they’re idle most of the time, with nobody to
engage them in discussions, which would otherwise stimulate the brain. But doctors assure us that it is possible to age without dementia as well. “Controlling lifestyle habits and ensuring that the brain is well stimulated can prevent dementia. I recently, met a 100-year-old man who was perfectly fine and remembered every detail and person he’d met with no trouble. He had no risk factors, despite his age,” explains Dr Sudhir.
What is the relevance of HER2 status in Breast cancer? Some breast cancer cells divide and grow when a protein called Human Epidermal Growth Factor, which naturally occurs in the body, attaches to another protein called HER2 that is found on the surface of breast cancer cells. Approximately 20 – 25 per cent of people with breast cancer have an increased amount of HER2 protein. Breast cancers which are HER2+ve tend to grow faster than ones that are HER2 Negative. What is Herceptin? Is it the same as Chemotherapy? Herceptin is not part of Chemotherapy. It is a drug that treats certain types of breast cancer which is HER2+ve and belongs to a group of drug treatments called targeted therapies. Only people whose cancer has high levels of the HER2 protein will benefit from Herceptin. Herceptin is given to treat people with primary breast cancer following surgery and chemotherapy to reduce the chances of the breast cancer coming back or spreading. It is also given to people with secondary breast cancer (that has spread to other parts of the body) or locally advanced breast cancer (that has come back in the same site or the surrounding area) either on its own or alongside chemotherapy. How is Herceptin given? Herceptin is given as a drip into a vein in the arm. The treatment is given as an outpatient, usually once every three weeks. What are its side effects? Everyone reacts differently to drugs. Some people may experience more side effects than others. As Herceptin affects only cancer cells it has fewer side effects than chemotherapy drugs that also affect healthy cells. Side effects from Herceptin are more likely with the first one or two treatments and in most cases these will reduce over time. Five facts about cold 1
It’s not the cold viruses that make us feel ill We all feel ill whenever we have a cold, but this is not because of the cold virus but because of our immune response. According to Professor Ron Eccles of the Common Cold Centre in Cardiff,“The immune system detects the virus and floods the area with white blood cells and chemical messengers, and these trigger various symptoms such as headaches and a blocked nose.”
2
Blocked nose is not because of mucus During a cold when we feel our nose is blocked it is actually because the veins in the nose are inflammed. When we have a cold, our blood vessels swell up due to the infection fighting blood vessels. This results im narrowing of the air passage that ultimately results in restricting the air flow.
Dr Christian Jessen
I
have always thought it telling of our reluctance to make significant changes to our lifestyles that we make resolutions but once a year. We start in earnest but if they fail, oh well, better wait until next year before trying again. So I cannot stress enough the importance of setting realistic, achievable targets, and reaching them by making small changes rather than drastic sweeping ones. If I were going to target one area that we would probably all benefit from doing something about, it would be weight. If you haven’t had basic parameters such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels measured in an age, then visit your GP, get them done and make a start. The key is not cutting foods out but cutting down. Instead of worrying about what you shouldn't be eating, think about what you can eat instead. If I had to distil my weight-loss advice into five key points, they would be these: n You don't have to go it alone. Getting friends on board, or joining weight-loss groups, can be more fun and far more successful. You can even download apps to your phone or computer that help you out. Research clearly shows that women who received daily, personalised text messages with tips and information on nutrition
and exercise lost more weight than those who had did ot. n Key to managing your weight is sleep. Make sure you are getting enough. It has been suggested that those who struggle to manage their weight might find it easier if they got one extra hour of sleep each night. n Don’t get hung up on whether
3
Catching a cold through your eyes? When a person with an infection coughs or sneezes, the mucus tends to reach our hands or in the air. Most of us touch our eyes and nose more often than we realise. A duct links the eyes and the nasal cavity, and the virus travels easily from the eye to the nose and throat, where it can cause an infection.
4
Women catch a cold more often
you should be low carb, or low fat, or any other diet regime. It is change in general that makes the difference, not so much the diet in particular. n Take it easy. A loss of around 2lb per week is about right to stop your body from panicking and going into starvation mode. It is also a far more sustainable rate.
n Get everyone in the family involved. Struggling to eat healthily while those around you don’t is doomed to fail. Everyone will benefit from improving their diet, especially children, as managing to keep to a healthy weight in childhood makes having weight problems as an adult far less likely. EVENING STANDARD
It is said that women have a more chance of catching a cold than men as they interact with children who catch a cold more often.Childminders, nursery teachers or school teachers, are more likely to pick up the viruses.
5
Yellow mucus is caused by white blood cells During a cold , one of the first symptoms is clear, runny mucus from the nose. As the cold develops, mucus usually becomes thicker and yellow, then green. White blood cells cause this change in colour and texture. Source: www.nhs.uk

study on screening for prostate cancer showed that aggressively testing for the disease among men in their 50s and 60s does not save lives. The results of the trial involving 76,000 men were first released in 2009, but the latest announcement is based on 10 to 13 years of follow-up among most of the participants, said the report in the latest issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. “The data confirm that for most men, it is not necessary to be screened annually for prostate cancer,” said lead author Gerald Andriole of the Washington
University School of Medicine. “A large majority of the cancers we found are slow-growing tumours that are unlikely to be deadly." Annual screening for prostate cancer tended to result in more diagnoses, but did not prevent deaths, said the updated results of the trial which involved men age 55 to 74. Researchers found 12 per cent more prostate tumours among men screened annually compared to those who received routine care. But deaths did not vary significantly across groups, with 158 dying in the screening group and 145 in the routine care group. IANS
comfortable running rather than walking when they start moving at around two metres per second or about 4.5 miles per hour. North Carolina State University biomedical engineers have discovered why: At two metres per second, running makes better use of an important calf muscle than walking, and therefore is a much more efficient use of the muscle’s and the body’s energy. The results comes from the first study combining ultrasound imaging, high-speed motioncapture techniques and a force-measuring treadmill to examine a key calf muscle and how it behaves when people

The study used ultrasound imaging in a unique way: A small ultrasound probe fastened to the back of the leg showed the adjustments made by the muscle as study subjects walked and ran at various speeds, according to a Carolina statement. When people break into a run at about two metres per second, however, the study showed that the muscle slows down, or changes its length more slowly, providing more power while working less rigorously, thereby increasing efficiency. Loyola Academy’s fests are as popular as its academics. Shiba Minai talks to its students about their upcoming fest Soch and more... Students Speak Coolest thing about college
Coolest hangout outside campus
We think the best thing about our college is that attendance is given a lot of emphasis. We even have marks for it. While sometimes we crib about it, we also realise that this is what pulls all of us to college, where we have the best time. We also love the sprawling campus spread over 144 acres. It’s green, it’s airy and we think all colleges should be made this way.
Since the college is too far from the city, we don’t get to hangout at some of the joints that are frequented by students of other colleges. But we hangout in Latte in Karkhana. We also go to the nearest McDonald’s. On low-budget days, we eat the lowest priced burgers!
Fashion trends
Kolaveri Di is still on the playlist of many. In Telugu, Sir Ostaraa from the movie The Businessman is also a rage in our college. And a number that seems to be a favourite is la la la from the album LMFAO.
All of us love trying out a variety of styles, although we have limitations due to college rules. Right now the girls are sporting harem pants. And one trend that seems to have taken the college girls by storm is cute hair clips. The boys still sport the Loyola trademark, the Goatee. Tattoos are of course, a rage.
Coolest hangout on campus We love our canteen and also the college kiosk. Most of us have some of the best times in our college kiosk. It’s cheap and has some great options to eat. Apart from that, since our college is huge, each group finds a cosy corner, which becomes their hangout.
Songs playing on their iPods
Things students wished they could change about their college Since our college is so far, we spend a lot of time commuting, so we wish the college hours were shorter. Apart from that, we have a very stringent hierarchy. For any change or implementation, we have to go through several levels of approvals, and by the time its approved, sometimes, it’s too late. Also, there are times when a request is denied at one level, it cannot be taken up again or reconsidered.
SOCHA HAI L
oyola’s annual college festival Soch is on the calendar of every college-going youngster in the city. The two-day fest, organised by the commerce stream, has, over time, established itself as a huge hit. From mock parliaments to debates, quizzes to dances, there is something for everyone. We catch up with the minds behind the fest to talk to us everything about Soch. “Our two biggest challenges this year were to revive the brand Soch, as the fest was cancelled last year and the year
before due to the Telangana agitation in the city. Second, was to raise sponsorships. A lot of other colleges also had their fests at the same time, so we had to start early and work extra hard,” say the team. Eventually, the team consisting of Siddu, Paritosh, Naveen, Nishanth, Sagarika, G Ramachandran and George Cherian covered over 60 companies in a month and managed to rake in over `2 lakh worth of sponsorships. The core committee is only the tip of the iceberg; the entire commerce stream is enthusias-
tic about the fest. They have 50 more volunteers who are ready to take on the challenge of executing this fest. This team decided not to use an event manager but do everything on their own. “This experience has given us tremendous exposure and harnessed our leadership skills. It has also helped hone our client serving and marketing skills,” say the team members. Soch is going to be held on the 17th and 18th of this month. Also, for the first time, this fest goes national. So get ready to make some noise!
Community service – a must do!
S
tudents of Loyola are actively involved in community service. In fact, it’s a compulsory subject. If any student doesn’t participate, he or she is detained. The students of this college have been advocating the ills of alcohol and drug abuse through street plays. Another cause that these students have taken up, is educating the less fortunate. They volunteer their services to teach in various government schools.

uchitra Karthik Kumar is a livewire to say the least. She sings like a dream and is among the most sought after singers in the Tamil and Telugu industry today. Her singing career is bound to zoom ahead as she continues to make waves among Telugu music lovers. Her latest song, Sir Osthara in the Businessman has become a rage these days. “Even while we recorded the song, Thaman and I knew that there was something special about it. Thaman had a keen sense of what wouldn’t work and what would click with listeners. I am glad his intuition worked,” she says. It’s quite a coincidence that she has sung for a Mahesh Babu starrer after five years. Interestingly, her first recording session with Mani Sharma had to be stalled midway since the music director felt that her voice didn’t suit the song. But that was before Pokiri happened. Mani Sharma called her to sing Ippatikinka Naa Vayasu and Dole Dole in Pokiri which went on become huge hits. Born and brought up in Chennai, Suchitra quit her IT job when she got an opportunity to be an RJ at Radio Mirchi. “It seemed like a lot more fun than what I was doing. Those were the best ten years of my life. My show was scheduled from 7 am to 11 am, so, the city would literally wake up, get dressed, get to work and finish the first meeting of the day - all listening to me! It used to give me an unbelievable high,” she recalls. Although she had been singing since her childhood, she began taking it seriously when her friend Timothy Madhukar introduced her to Harris Jayaraj. She sang a few jingles and then her first breakthrough was singing Omaha Zeeya, a bit in the

song Uyirin Uyire (Cheliya Cheliya in Telugu) in Gautham Menon’s Kaakha Kaakha. In the past eight years, she has sung for top musicians like A R Rahman, Mani Sharma, DeviSri Prasad, Harris Jayaraj, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Thaman. We wonder what it’s like to juggle between the working styles of all these musicians. “I believe in the vibe. If that falls into place, the process of recording the song is beautiful. Otherwise it could be pretty disconcerting. The singer would get frustrated by the number of takes she/he needs to give, and the composer would never be satisfied,” she says. She’s quite candid about the criticism she faces and confesses, “Scan the internet and you'll find blogs calling me a non-singer and wondering how I get the opportunities that I do. I don’t blame them because I myself am sometimes amazed at the opportunities I get. I am aware of my flaws and strengths as a singer.” More than singing, she reveals that she loves spending time in a studio. “Of late, I have been collaborating and recording for composers who want to get into cinema on their demos. I've been enjoying this process tremendously. To tell you the truth —at heart, I am a recording artist. I am most comfortable in a studio,” she reveals. She's also working on an independent single with Rahman's guitarist Sanjeev and formed a new band named EQ. So what’s the best compliment she has received so far? “A hotshot young music composer once said, that my voice in Naa Hrudayam is such a turn-on,” she chuckles refusing to reveal the composer’s name and adds, “and also Surya’s father, Sivakumar complimented me on the same song saying my voice has the right balance of sultriness and innocence in it.” We couldn’t help but ask her about the craziest experience she has had as a singer in all these years. “Once I had to sing a song in which the lyrics went - 'I am an octopus in the sea of love! It was bizarre,” she signs off.

S Thaman, the hot-shot music director, is quite confident of Bodyguard’s success. The film, starring Venkatesh and Trisha in lead roles, is the official remake of the Malayalam film of the same name. Despite the super success of the Tamil and Hindi versions of the film, Thaman seems undeterred. “I have not seen the other versions of Bodyguard. But when I recently saw the film post DTS mixing, I fell in love with the film. The film has a good mix of romance and comedy. It will definitely win the race at the box-office this Sankranti and it’ll be yet another hit in Venkatesh’s career,” Thaman said. Gopichand Malineni, who made his debut with Don Seenu, has directed the film. Bodyguard is slated for release on January 14.

O
nce upon a time in Bollywood, movies were either conservative, repetitive or regressive. But times have changed and film makers are willing to go beyond the conventional and venture into territories that are bold and brand new. Hindi films today are not just about happy endings and if they are, the story is much more plausible. Now with this realism, there is another factor that has been added to storylines — profanity. There seems to be advocates for and against it on both sides of the fence. Be it a certain chunk in the audience or our censor board, moral policing is something that has been an omnipresent shadow. We don’t need to go too far to see how movies like Omkara, Dev D, Delhi Belly,Ishqiya have depicted the prevalent sentiment of the the film makers. But put it across on the celluloid and our censor board have their canes ready. The earthy and rugged appeal that was reflected in Omkara was much appreciated. But the swearing and cussing took many by shock. Dev D and Delhi Belly also raised red flags for the censor board as the movies ventured unchartered terrorities like sex and drugs, which would have otherwise been labelled obscene even a few years ago. Actor Sikander Kher who was seen in the movie Players alongside Sonam Kapoor faced heavy criticism for showing the middle finger in one of the scenes. He thinks that the censor board needs be a little more liberal. “I really don’t understand why they raise issues on something so trivial. Be it raising a middle finger or smoking a cigarette, it is representing reality. If my scene demands that we need to smoke, the first thing that will hamper the idea is the censor board which will have issues with everything. It kills the character or that scene. Times have changed and censor board should understand that people who want to do things will do it them
MONDAY, JANUARY 9, 2012
anyway, whether they have watched my movies or not. I don’t mean to say smoking is good for health or everyone should raise a middle finger at everyone else but its characters and movies, not the real life we talking about” he says adding, “I really feel they need to bring in some young people in on the censor board to balance it out. It’s no more the 70s or 80s for scenes to be scanned like that. They need to chill out.” For some censor board might be tolerable, but producer Pritish Nandy feels the whole idea of the censorship should be reassessed. “You cannot be passing songs like DK Bose at one moment and holding the other scene which has a kiss or some gesture. The overall idea of censorship is not fully outdated. But that said, the censor board should form varied labels for different movies and put them in, like a 13+ or 18+ to adults. Unless and until is hurts the national sentiments, there is no need to cut any scenes. Nowadays movies have become a victim of the outrage of these minority groups and censor board just adds to that.” he shares. While some feel the scanners need to be a bit balanced and go soft, actor Sonu Sood believes that it shouldn’t be onesided. “I feel it is important to have a censor board to keep things in check but at the same time they need to be a bit flexible and give the directors as well as the actors that creative liberty they need. There are certain words or actions that need to be emoted in order to do justice to a scene which the censor board should take into consideration. Having said that, it is the moral responsibility of directors and actors along to try and be sensitive to the sentiments of people,” he shares. Be it the DK Bose song or the scenes from Ishqiya, anything that disturbed the codes and conduct of the censor board has made the filmmakers go red. While Sonam Kapoor made sure she gives it back to the scan board by citing examples of Gandhi and freedom of speech and expression, we wonder who will have the last word in the battle of wills.
Censored The tussle between film makers and the censor board is never ending. Postnoon lends an ear.

Keeping up the momentum of 2011 — her breakthrough year — Vergara has started the new year on a high, stealing the show at the Golden Globes nomination announcements and assisting in an unexpected emergency as she left a New Year’s Eve party in Las Vegas. The new ad will debut in mid-January and affirms the sultry Colombian actress’s continued relationship with Pepsi, the company for whom the then-17-year-old student appeared in her first TV commercial. In 2011, Vergara and Diet Pepsi enjoyed the buzz around a widely popular commercial in which soccer superstar David Beckham also appeared.

e were so ready for this belly, and now we’re so psyched to meet this baby! Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed a daughter Saturday night in New York, the little one’s arrival coming via scheduled C-section, multiple sources confirm to E! News. And the pop ‘n’ hip-hop princess’ name? Drumroll, please... Blue Ivy Carter! (At least that’s what Jay-Z is telling pals at this point—the couple’s reps have not immediately responded to calls seeking comment.) Friend and music mogul Russell Simmons was among the first to celebrate the arrival, tweeting the new parents: “congrats to my good friends Beyonce and Jay-Z.” Rihanna gave baby Blue a warm welcome, tweeting: “Welcome to the world princess Carter! Love Aunty Rih.” Hey, we’re happy to find out this much, considering Blue’s par-
ents didn’t even confirm to the world that they were married until...Wait? Did they ever really confirm it? (Public records ultimately told the tale.) Anyway, the Crazy in Love duo tied the knot in April 2008 after roughly six years of dating. Considering they waited another three years to have a baby, you can tell this is one couple that thinks things through! Beyoncé memorably revealed that she was pregnant onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards in August. And her hubby certainly seems to be in the right head space, telling E! News in November that he hoped to be the kind of father whose children could talk to him about anything. “Your child could come to you and have any type of conversation. I always hope for that kind of open relationship,” he said. Just imagine the rap sessions father and daughter will be having a few years from now!

Before Saturday, Perry had not Tweeted since Dec 26.
On Dec 30, Brand announced that he was filing for divorce from Perry. “Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends,” the 36-year-old British actor and comedian said in a statement. Brand, who stars in the upcoming Rock of Ages and was cast in Diablo Cody’s directorial debut with Julianne Hough in September, and Teenage Dream singer Perry, were married Oct 23, 2010 in India. KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

COOK STARS, BUT ENGLAND FALTER
DUBAI: Opener Alastair Cook was the only batsman to get some good practice as England’s batting crumbled against some spirited ICC Combined XI bowling in their three-day tour opener here on Sunday. The left-hander held the batting during his patient knock as none of the England batmen could score big on a slow Global Cricket Academy pitch, spurning a good chance ahead of the first Test against Pakistan starting here from January 17. Cook added 53 for the third wicket with Kevin Pietersen (15)
NICOL TAKES SQUASH TITLE LONDON: World number one Nicol David captured the World Series Finals title on Sunday when the Malaysian star defeated Ireland’s Madeline Perry 11-9, 119, 11-9 in the Queen’s Club final. David dropped just one game all week — in the semifinals against Laura Massaro — and she was too strong for world number three Perry in the final. “Winning the title is a great start to 2012 and having the top eight players here and contending for it makes it very special,” said the Malaysian. “I have felt good all week. Hopefully there’s more to come.” In the men’s event, four-time world champion Amr Shabana of Egypt defeated France’s Gregory Gaultier 6-11, 12-10, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8. “I can’t player better. I was nearly out last year. If it wasn’t for my friends and family I think I would have retired.”
before England declared their first innings on 185-8. Combined XI finished the second day on 90-5, having an overall lead of 186. They scored 281 in their first innings. Resuming at 16-0, England had reached 44 when skipper Andrew Strauss (17) fell to Afghanistan paceman Hamid Hassan who finished with 2-26. Hasan also dismissed Jonathan Trott (one) with a beautiful delivery, caught behind by his fellow Afghan Mohammad Shahzad. Cook, who hit 14 well-timed
boundaries during his 121-ball knock, also fell caught behind off Namibian medium pacer Christi Viljoen. Besides Pietersen and Trott, Ian Bell (three) and Eoin Morgan (one) also failed to get going. Off-spinner Mohammad Nabi finished with 2-42 while Irish paceman Boyd Rankin took 2-49. Cook remarked of the batting failure: “It wasn’t ideal and I think we have to put that down to a little bit of rustiness. “Credit to the opposition though, especially Rankin I thought he bowled very well,” said Cook of
the paceman who also plays for Warwickshire county. Cook said England, who last played a match in September, lacked rhythm. “I think if you haven’t batted outside for probably four months in a game with whites and the red ball, it does take a while to get into that rhythm. In an ideal world, a few more lads would have spent a bit more time in the middle, but it’s not the end of the world. “When you have that much time off, it’s really good and nice to have it, but it does take a little bit longer to get into that rhythm.”

Woods’ former coach in tell-all book NEW YORK: “The Big Miss”, a tell-all book detailing Hank Haney’s six years serving as swing coach for golf star Tiger Woods, is set to go on sale March 27, barely a week before the Masters tees off. A synopsis of the book on the Random House Incorporated website described Haney as being impressed by the work ethic of Woods. But it also noted how Haney saw the 14-time major champion was fearful of “the big miss”, a woeful shot that would doom his chances on a hole or in a tournament. And it mentions Haney’s observations on how Woods used a variety of tactics to keep people from getting too close to him. Woods was 28 when he asked Haney to coach him in March of 2004. Haney said he spent 110 days a year with Woods, staying at the Woods home more than 30 days a year to see him in relaxed moments with then-wife Elin as well as on the golf course. Woods, chasing the all-time record of 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus, won six majors while working with Haney, including the 2005 Masters and British Open, the 2006 British Open and PGA Championship, the 2007 PGA and the 2008 US Open. After going more than two years without a victory since his infamous sex scandal, Woods snapped his drought last month with a triumph at the World Challenge, an 18-man event that benefits his charity foundation. Woods will open his 2012 campaign on January 26 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
WRC 2012 thrown into turmoil after sponsor thrown out PARIS: The 2012 world rally championship, which starts in Monte-Carlo in 10 days time, suffered a major blow on Sunday when the event lost its cashstrapped promoter. The FIA, motorsport’s international governing body, confirmed that its deal with North One Sport, whose parent company Convers Sports Initiatives went into administration at the end of last year, had been terminated. “Last Friday the FIA served notice to terminate its contract with North One Sport, the promoter of the FIA World Rally Championship,” said a FIA statement. “The FIA sought urgent unequivocal assurances from NOS that it could fulfil its contractual obligations and deliver the pro-
motion of the upcoming Rally of Monte Carlo and the championship for 2012 and for the future. “It is with regret and disappointment that no such assurance has been given to the FIA, and therefore today the FIA has been driven to terminate its contract with NOS. NOS has conspicuously failed to deliver its contractual obligations and is in fundamental breach of contract.” The FIA added that they were making efforts to ensure that the 13-race championship will still go ahead as scheduled. “This has placed the FIA in an unprecedented situation 10 days before Monte Carlo in that the FIA will have to take action to secure the staging of the Championship,” added the statement.

Steelers fall prey to bucking Broncos NEW YORK: Tim Tebow threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas only 11 seconds into overtime on Sunday to give Denver a stunning 29-23 NFL playoff upset of six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh. Thomas caught the ball running across the middle, stiff-armed defender Ike Taylor and ran the last 60 yards into the end zone to put the Broncos, who lost their final three regular-season games, into the second round of the playoffs. “I don’t think it’s the first time our offense has clicked in but it certainly was well timed,” Broncos coach John Fox said. “I don’t think we reinvented the wheel. We just executed better. “A lot of that was because of our quarterback. He stepped up and played well and was a big part of our winning that game.” Southpaw quarterback Tebow recaptured the magic of his mid-season six-game
Playoff schedule Second Round Saturday: New Orleans at San Francisco, Denver at New England Sunday: Houston at Baltimore, New York Giants at Green Bay
Conference Finals January 22
Super Bowl February 5 at Indianapolis, Indiana win streak, throwing for 316 yards and two touchdowns and running for another. But his last play was his greatest, ending the shortest over-time in NFL playoff history. “They made the significant plays that allowed them to win,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “It was what we expected. He did a nice job. A lot of guys did.” Denver will visit New England next Saturday while Houston will travel to Baltimore next Sunday in American Conference second-round games. In Sunday’s other playoff game, Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Hakeem Nicks, and the New York Giants
advanced with a 24-2 victory over visiting Atlanta. Manning completed 23of-32 passes for 277 yards while Nicks caught six passes for 115 yards as the Giants won the first playoff game in their new stadium for their first home playoff triumph since 2000. “It’s special. It’s a big win,” Manning said. “The defense came out awesome and we were able to get some things going in the second half.” The Giants booked a second-round visit next Sunday to defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay while New Orleans, on a nine-game win streak, goes to San Francisco next Saturday in the other National Conference matchup. “They are a great team,” Manning said of the Packers, who lost only once this season. “We played them tough. We have to give it our all. The defense will have to continue to play well and we’ll have to make some big plays.” The Packers visited the Giants last month and escaped with a 38-35 victory. “High-powered is exactly what comes to mind when you talk about that crew,” Giants defender Justin Tuck said. “It’s going to be a big challenge and we’re looking forward to it.” At Denver, Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger connected with Jerricho Cotchery on a 31-yard touchdown passes with 3:48 to play, pulling the Steelers level at 23-23 and setting the stage for Tebow’s over-time heroics. Pittsburgh’s Ryan Mundy forced a fumble by Broncos rusher Willis McGahee and LaMarr Woodley recovered for the Steelers near midfield to set up the drive for the equalizer. Mike Wallace ran one yard on a sweep around the right side that capped an 87yard, 11-play march and pulled Pittsburgh within 20-13 with 4:29 to play in the third quarter. At New York, Atlanta took a 2-0 lead 1:16 into the second quarter on a rare safety when Manning was whistled for an intentional grounding penalty from his own end zone. But New York’s defense, among the NFL’s worst against the pass despite finishing third in quarterback sacks, shut down 4,000-yard passer Matt Ryan and sent Atlanta home after one playoff game for the second season in a row.
Wizards fail to find that magic WASHINGTON: Kevin Love scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to power the Minnesota Timberwolves over Washington 93-72 on Sunday, keeping the Wizards the NBA’s only winless team this season. Spanish guard Ricky Rubio came off the bench to contribute 13 points and 14 assists for the TWolves, who improved to 3-5 and avoided a loss that would
have matched them for the Western Conference cellar. The Wizards, who fell to 0-8, were led by 14 points from Nick Young and reserve Trevor Booker. Washington, already off to the worst start in franchise history, will try to end the win drought at home Tuesday against Toronto before road games against a pair of division
leaders on Wednesday at Chicago and Friday at Philadelphia. The Timberwolves, ahead by only three after the first quarter, seized a 48-34 half-time lead behind 10 points from Love and nine by Rubio and cruised in the second half. Derrick Williams added 14 points and seven rebounds for Minnesota.

Barça title hopes suffer setback Tim Hanlon
MADRID: Barcelona suffered a major setback to their hopes of retaining their La Liga title when they were held to a 1-1 draw by city rivals Espanyol on Sunday, a result which left them five points behind Real Madrid. Barcelona took a 16thminute lead through a header from Cesc Fabregas -- the club's 100th goal in all competitions this season -- but were rocked when Alvaro Vazquez scored an 86thminute equaliser with a low header. Gerard Pique hit the woodwork in injurytime as Barca's last chance for the three points went begging, leaving Real Madrid, who had coasted to a 5-1 win over Granada on Saturday, in control of their title destiny. "Difficult game tonight, we left two points but we have to keep going till the end. Now time to rest," Fabregas wrote on his Twitter account. Espanyol have an exciting young side and coach Mauricio Pochettino promised that they would go out to attack which they did. Joan Verdu was denied twice inside the opening minutes -- first by keeper Victor Valdes and then Pique, who cleared the follow up off the line. At the other end, Espanyol keeper Cristian Alvarez played a ball straight to Lionel Messi in front of goal but fortunately for the shot-stopper the Argentine handled it and was yellow-carded. Barca did take the lead when Fabregas, left unmarked, headed home inside the penalty area after 16 minutes and again the keeper was slow to react as the ball went underneath his dive. Espanyol had chances from distance, notably from Sergio Garcia, while Thievy Bifouma also looked dangerous. It was far from a vintage performance from Barcelona but they looked in control and they could have had a second from Messi who clipped the post with 12 minutes to go. But then Espanyol stunned the champions when Thievy headed on a cross to Vazquez who powered it home in front of
goal with a diving header. Pique crashed a shot against the woodwork in stoppage time but Espanyol hung on for a point. Barcelona's coach Pep Guardiola stressed after the game that the season still had a long way to run. "The league has a long way to go and there are still many points left." to be won and lost, he said. "I was happy with much of the second half, though we lacked presence in the penalty box." Real had coasted to a 5-1 win over Granada on Saturday, the minnows first visit to the Bernabeu in 36 years. They went in 2-1 at the break with goals from Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos while Mikel Rico scored in between for Getafe. The game turned straight after the restart with strikes from Gonzalo Higuain and another for Benzema before Cristiano Ronaldo, with his 21st of the league season, wrapped up the scoring a minute from the end. "The third goal after the break was the key," said Real assistant coach Aitor Karanka. "We knew that Granada were going to be a difficult opponent as they showed in the first half but they are a team which is built to defend and so after we had scored the third -- and with all the space at the Bernabeu -- they had more problems." New Villarreal coach Jose Francisco Molina was denied a perfect start in his new job as a late goal from Aritz Aduriz saw Valencia earn a 2-2 draw after having been two goals down on Sunday. It was a baptism of fire for Molina who replaced Juan Carlos Garrido, dismissed before Christmas after a woeful start to the campaign, as they faced local rivals Valencia who were looking to reinforce their Champions League claims. Marco Ruben put Villarreal ahead after 14 minutes with a clinical finish. Valencia had no time to respond when they went further behind as Gonzalo Rodriguez headed home a Borja Valero free-kick. Sofiane Feghouli reduced the arrears before the break while Roberto Soldado and Feghouli both fired wide at the start of the second half. Villarreal appeared to be heading for their first win in nine attempts until sloppy defending from Florian Lejeune allowed in Aduriz to fire an equaliser. AFP

LONDON: Neil Warnock was sacked as manager of Premier League strugglers Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, the club confirmed. "Queens Park Rangers Football Club has today parted company with manager Neil Warnock," said a statement. The west London side are currently just a point above the relegation zone and have lost six and drawn two of their last eight league matches and on Saturday, they needed a last-minute goal to secure a 1-1 draw at Milton Keynes Dons in the FA Cup third round. Warnock succeeded in lifting QPR back to the Premier League after a 15-year absence – they
were promoted as Championship champions last May – and he has left with happy memories, even if irritation is vying for prominence. "Obviously I'm very disappointed but, having achieved so much, I leave the club with a great sense of pride. I have enjoyed my time here more than anywhere else and the QPR fans have been brilliant with me. They deserve success. "The board at QPR are hugely ambitious and I wish them every success for the future. I've been involved in the game a long time and I will be spending the immediate future with my family and friends before deciding my next career move."
Oldham’s Tom Adeyemi (C) reacts after hearing a supporter shouting towards him during the FA Cup football match between Liverpool and Oldham Athletic at Anfield in Liverpool
Liverpool apologise for ‘racist’ fan LIVERPOOL: Besieged English giants Liverpool apologised on Sunday to the black footballer who claimed he was racially abused by fans on the Anfield ground's legendary Kop. Oldham's Tom Adeyemi said he was targetted during Friday's FA Cup third-round game, which Liverpool won 5-1. It was an incident which saw a 20-year-old man from the Aintree area of Liverpool arrested and then bailed on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. "Whatever the outcome of what is now a police investigation, all of us are deeply sorry for what happened and our players and our club pass on our sincere regrets to Tom Adeyemi for the upset and distress he suffered as a result of the matter at hand," said a Liverpool statement.
"Our supporters are renowned throughout the world for their outstanding commitment, passion and fairness. They are drawn from nationalities across the globe with widely diverse backgrounds and heritages. "The actions of any one individual do not represent our fans. Their stance on these issues is just as resolute as the club's." Friday's incident came with Liverpool already on the defensive over their handling of the Luis Suarez affair, with the club reacting furiously after the Uruguay striker was banned for eight games and fined $62,000 for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra. Ironically, Liverpool were on Sunday drawn to face United in the FA Cup fourth round.
