Wedding ends in tragedy Licensed revolver goes off accidentally killing one. Cops try to trace accused LUKAS WALLACE

A
n accidental shot from a newly-acquired revolver cost one bystander his life at a wedding hall in SN Reddy Gardens in the wee hours of Friday. The incident that stirred up a panic in the hall occurred when Narasimha Reddy, 42, a realtor by profession was boasting of his licensed revolver to the friends around. A preliminary police probe revealed that Reddy was having some drinks with his friends and relatives when the topic of his new weapon cropped up. Reddy, in a flourish, was demonstrating the firearm to the party around after removing the bullets. But while he removed five bullets, he had forgotten about the sixth. And as he demonstrated his skill of using the firearm, it
went off and the bullet hit K Rajender Reddy who was standing nearby. He collapsed and in a panic, Narasimha himself rushed him to the nearby
Remedy Hospital. As the gravity of the situation sunk in, Narasimha fled the hospital. Rajender died soon after. It is said Rajender, a

riramulu Patel, 75, who was issued with a show cause notice for cancelling the license for his revolver on the grounds that he had shot a burglar, injuring him, has in a written reply, pleaded that he had used the firearm for the first time in 20 years and its use was essential for his own safety. “I got the license 20 years ago. Though I carried the weapon whenever I went out, I never took it out in public or used it anytime in all these years,” he stated. “If I had not used it he’d
have knifed me,” he said. Last month a burglar tried to enter Patel’s home when he was alone as his family members had gone to attend a marriage reception. He fired at the intruder. The suspect, later identified as Thirupathiah, 40, sustained two bullet injuries. Patel told Postnoon on Friday that cancelling the firearm license on the grounds that it was used against an intruder was illogical and unjust. “If it is not for my safety why do I have a licensed firearm? Is it a toy or antique?” Patel is puzzled. Patel is very worried that he was slapped with seven property cases a few years ago and though they were all dismissed the police used these as a handle to browbeat him. “It’s not fair. I am an old man and I have health problems. Why do they harass me?” he asked. The issue has raised a grave question on the usage of firearms in times of emergency. Law keepers and justice differ on the issue. Police say they will investigate and if it is found that he had used the weapon in selfdefence they could either skip filing a criminal case or open one and close it. But legal luminaries say filing a case is mandatory though the police could prove the use of the firearm was essential and the Court could take a lenient view and exonerate the user.

Ramachandrapuram Police station house officer (SHO) Surender said people present at the scene confirmed that it was an accident. “His forgetting to remove the sixth bullet led to the tragedy,” the officer said. However, it is alleged that the company had a couple of pegs on the occasion, which may have dulled the senses of the accused. A case of suspicious death has been registered and a hunt has begun to locate Narasimha Reddy. He has not reached his home in Bowenpally, the police said. Rajender Reddy’s father Mahendra Reddy, who is from Yellreddypeta village of Karimnagar district lost consciousness when he heard the news of his son’s death. “I can’t believe this,” he sobbed. Mahender is at the hospital mortuary. He said it could be an accident as Narasimha is a relative and had no history of any enmity.

While the demand has gone up to 450 MGD per day, the Board is able to supply 340MGD-345MGD of water every day. The Board will cut
water supply by 20 per cent to industry to meet the domestic and other demands. Presently, the Board is directly supplying water to 71 entities including industries and beverage companies. However, the officials are not happing to come on record to make these cuts official as they are scared of facing the wrath from industrial sections. “Yes, we have to take this

Although just a meagre 368.73 square metre land, the park on plot number A9-13/A9-4377 could have been a good source of fresh air for people, if maintained. But, what remains are trees without leaves, and a barren and dusty piece of land. “When the park was first opened, it was green and even had a joggers’ track. Every morning, we used to wake up to fresh air. We used to even spot rare migratory birds. Somehow, the park has escaped the eyes of the GHMC which doesn’t seem to care much about it anymore. We complained twice to the officials, but to no avail,” said B Suraj, a resident of the area. What the residents want to know is why the park isn’t being maintained despite residents paying hefty property tax. “What is the point of living in Jubilee Hills, if we can’t have basic facilities of a well maintained park?” questioned a resident. The GHMC officials remained unavailable for comment.

DL warms to Jagan? POLITICS U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com
I
t is more of vengeance than remorse. Minister for health DL Ravindra Reddy, a sworn enemy of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, recently surprised many by uttering a few things that give rise to an impression that he is getting closer to the embattled Kadapa MP. Ravindra Reddy contested against Jagan from Kadapa in the recent byelections and suffered a humiliating defeat. He mouthed invectives at Jagan on numerous occasions and gave gigabytes of video interviews pouring scorn on the YSR clan and presented voluminous documentation charging Jagan with corruption of worst order. But all that animosity seems to be getting relegated to the backburner. Soon after an aborted bid to oust him from the Cabinet and ever since his portfolio was pruned, DL turned spiteful against Chief Minister N Kiran
Kumar Reddy. He minced no words in venting his ire. Stopping short of showering encomiums on Jagan, DL said had Jagan been made the CM soon after YSR’s death, the State would not have all these issues, especially the by-elections. Some senior Congress leaders indicated that Ravindra Reddy might support Jagan from behind the scenes with a view to taking on the CM politically. Latest act of DL that is lending credence to this view is his statement that at least 70 to 80 MLAs would join the YSR Congress, soon after the
byelections to the 17 constituencies in the State. DL was a bosom friend of YSR for a long time, but they fell apart in the internecine Congress politics. But YSR condescended and managed a ‘no-love-no-hate’ relationship with him. Against this background, a Congress minister from Rayalaseema said that DL might join the Jagan camp. After a 10day leave from the Assembly, DL began causing ripples with his observations, making his intentions explicit more overtly than covertly.

tation Ghanpur was originally called Ganapavaram, christened after Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. Later, it has come to be known as Ganapuram, Ghanapur, and now Ghanpur, which has taken the form of Station Ghanpur when Nizam State Railways laid a railway from Secunderabad to Kazipet via Ghanpur. Station Ghanpur remained one of the several constituencies without much prominence until Kadiyam Srihari was elected from this constituency. He has developed the constituency to the best of his ability. His induction into the State Cabinet by NT Rama Rao soon after his (Srihari’s) maiden election brought the constituency into focus and it stayed on as long as he was in the Chandrababu Naidu Cabinet. The by -election here is turning out to be a litmus test for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi as the party nominee T Rajaiah is facing stiff challenge from the Telugu Desam Party candidate Kadiyam Srihari. Preliminary surveys revealed that the former minister and TDP senior leader Kadiyam Srihari is forging ahead despite the Telangana sentiment that is working in favour of the TRS nominee Rajaiah . Station Ghanpur remained a stronghold of TDP till 1999 elections, but in 2004 the TRS took the seat when G Vijaya Rama Rao wrested it from Kadiyam Srihari. However, the TDP regained the seat in the 2008 byelections when Srihari inflicted a crushing defeat on Vijaya Rama Rao. In 2009, the TRS-TDP combine took a drubbing with Congress nominee T Rajaiah trouncing the opposition.
Rajaiah recently resigned the Assembly seat to seek a re-election on behalf of the TRS. Leaders of Telangana Joint Action Committee and the TRS claim major support base in the villages. The TRS is enjoying a slight edge in Ghanpur Station and Dharmasagar mandals, according to initial reports. The Congress is also not lagging here and its nominee Rajarapu Pratap is vigorously campaigning. However, the real fight is between the TRS and TDP.

CM to campaign in Kovur TIRUPATI: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is in no mood to be on the sidelines as campaign for the crucial bypolls is heating up. The CM, who arrived at Renigunta airport this morning, after conducting a review meeting with officials and elected representatives at Tirupati, would leave for Nellore. He would campaign for the Congress candidate in Kovur Assembly constituency in the by-elections slated for March 18. He is one of the ‘star campaigners’ on behalf of the Congress in the lone Assembly constituency in
coastal Andhra region. Political analysts are of the opinion that the bypoll results would be a crucial test for the CM who has been facing increasing dissidence from within the party.

ucked away in a narrow lane of the Mehboob Chowk, deep inside the heart of the Old City, every evening, pigeons find their way home to a coop that has stood there since the time of the Qutub Shahi kings. Almost over 250 years old, the ‘purana kabootar khana’ still houses pigeons and a lot of other birds, that is maintained and preserved for by the descendants of the late kings. On a summer evening, one can find people cutting across communities, with fistfuls of grains feeding the pigeons, seeking better fortunes or an answer to their prayers. In this part of the City, time has never changed, the people here harbour a poetic romance and compassion for birds that they believe are messengers of the almighty. “This coop has been around since the Qutub Shahi dynasty, preserved and passed on from one generation to the next. These birds have also over the ages adapted to our style of living. They fly away by the early morning azaan and return in the evening at the same time. “I grew up with stories of the Kings and the Nizams visiting this place and feeding the birds,” says Syed Abdul Khadir, caretaker
Fact file n Kaboothar Khana was started by Siddi Ibrahim over 200 years ago, a bird lover and a descendant of the Qutub Shahi dynasty. n The coop has more than 150 pigeon holes with over a thousand pigeons. of the coop and descendant of the late kings. Bird chatter fills the relatively calm Hussaini Alam street. A general estimate on the number of birds flying in and around the coop would be easily more than a couple of hundreds. So how and who manages the coop now? “Our family does it. Managing the coop is not a problem, especially when so many well-wishers gather here almost everyday to feed the birds. We ourselves have lost count of the number of birds that come in here everyday,” Abdul Khadir says. Apart from pigeons, one can find sparrows, doves and even owls that feed on the scattered grains and drink from the small pond inside the coop. Kabootar khana has held the hearts of Hyderabadis captive for over two centuries and continues to do so. It is heartening to see the cultural unity that holds the people together and their compassion towards birds and the environment.

This is when you know that your meal is going to be special. The joint, that can comfortably seat 30, has carved itself a niche among City foodies. With four new dishes — Cheese Shots, Haryali Kebab, Chicken Samosa and Chicken Popcorn, and five dips to go along with it — up for grabs in the form of 14 combos, the food in Venky’s Xprs just got a little more tempting. After munching on the veritable fare, our taste buds gave a standing ovation. The best of the new additions was undoubtedly Chicken Samosas. The freshly fried crisp batter only gave way to succulent mildly-spiced chicken mince. Yum! The Chicken Popcorn was perfectly round in an enticing colour, and a bite into it was heavenly. The Cheese Shots made with mozzarella and processed cheese, was a good addition for vegetarians. On the other hand, the Chicken Haryali Kebab, their signature addition, was average leaving much to be desired. A special mention here would be the dips, especially the Spicy Lemon Sauce and Garlic Sauce, which lift the dishes up, and your experience. ohn Carter is an epic film in terms of scale and Andrew Stanton brings alive stunning imagery of Barsoom (Mars) promising a spectacle. Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel A Princess of Mars, first published in 1912, the film narrates the story of an Earthling named John Carter who finds himself on Mars and how he becomes the hero of an ongoing battle between Helium and Zodanga. Leaving aside the names of the characters, one can find a heavy influence of George Lucas’ Star Wars and other great sci-fi films on John Carter in terms of production design. Andrew Stanton uses the parched land of Mars to great effect and there are quite a few jaw-dropping scenes in the film, yet it leaves a feeling of void by the time the end credits roll. The problem with John Carter is that it runs on predictable lines about a reluctant
hero finding a cause and fighting for what is right. Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins, who play the lead roles, do the rest of the honours of falling in love and saving the inhabitants of Mars. Everyone keeps talking about finding hope and freedom and it is just a matter of time before Andrew Stanton narrates the story on these lines. Does the film live up to the expectation? No. What it does do well is transport us to a different world, controlled by the Holy Therns, whose leader Matai Shang (Mark Strong) does not let peace prevail on the planet. John Carter scores high in terms of cinematography and visual effects. There is magic and a whole lot of science in the film, but surprisingly low emotional quotient. Neither John Carter nor Andrew Stanton’s team seem to have realised the need to reinvent the story. The climax in particular is a big mess and there’s hardly a big spectacle one would have expected. However, the film has enough thrills to please the fanboys of this genre. The trick is to leave the brains on Earth before Andrew Stanton transports you to Barsoom.

lbert Einstein said that “Everything should be simple but not simpler.” Many think this holds good for investments. After all, investments have always been sounding exotic, arcane and out of reach of understanding of common investors. Truth is that successful investing is not that complex. It’s all about simple basics and common sense wisdom. You need not be a Wharton MBA or even a CA to invest well. You just need to be financially literate, and understand what can eat into your investments whether it is gold, stocks, real estate, cash or fixed deposits- inflation. Above all, understand the difference between savings and investing, spending and borrowing. Most people in their early twenties think that the first few years of salary earnings should go towards pampering themselves. After all, you earned the spurs, you worked for the magical sixfigure salary per annum (some of you may be seeing that figure every month). Here’s a little secret that will rev up your networth to know. The secret of getting rich slowly, but surely, is the miracle of compound interest. Why is compounding so powerful? Because time is money

A
uto industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) opposed the move to levy higher tax on diesel vehicles. The Union government is planning to impose higher tax on Indian diesel cars and cut duties on those imported from Europe. SIAM asserted that slashing of import duties would not benefit the auto makers. “It is also a contradictory policy that while we are talking about discouraging production and use of large and diesel cars in India, for the same type of cars we will be reducing the import duty under the free trade agreement (FTA) and making imports cheaper,” the SIAM said.

US job market looks up Veronica Smith
WASHINGTON: The US job market has emitted mixed signals on whether a recovery is under way ahead of Friday’s closely watched government employment report. Following a much better than expected January report, analysts are tempered in their outlook for the February numbers to be released by the Labor Department. Most analysts expect the unemployment rate will remain unchanged at 8.3 percent. The strongest job growth in nine months had pulled the jobless rate down from 8.5 percent in December to its lowest level in nearly three years: 243,000 net new jobs thanks to the private sector. That brisk pace was expect-
ed to have slowed in February. The average estimate is for 206,000 new jobs. “New labor market data have been consistent with our view that job growth slowed a notch in February,” said Ryan Sweet at Moody’s Analytics. The economy is still struggling after the deep 2008-2009 recession, appearing to recover in fits and starts. The Federal Reserve has warned that the distressed labor market poses one of the greatest drags on the fragile recovery, particularly long-term unemployment that experts say leads to loss of job skills. More than 40 percent of the nearly 13 million unemployed have been out of work for at least 10 months. In late February, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke said the US
economy had strengthened in some key ways, but that high unemployment, stagnant wages and the depressed housing market continued to limit expansion. “We have a long way to go before the labor market can be said to be operating normally,” he said. The Fed chief was cautious about growth prospects, saying the economy would probably grow at an annual rate of 2.25 percent in the coming quarters. This week’s job indicators added to the sense of suspense on whether the labor market is turning a corner. First-time claims for unemployment insurance rose by 8,000 last week to 362,000, the third straight week they have edged higher, the Labor Department reported Thursday. AFP

Senior BJP leaders including LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj will attend the oath taking ceremony that is being held at the Sports Authority of Goa ground, which is expected to be packed with thousands of people. Party sources said that seven people including chief minister would be taking oath during the first round this evening. Air-conditioner sales to grow this summer
Mithun Dasgupta
KOLKATA: Despite higher prices and confusion over the star rating system, this summer may be a ‘cool’ one for air conditioner makers who are projecting around 15 per cent sales growth over last year. Business was quite dull last year due to a delayed and cooler summer and multiple price hikes. But this year
industry experts expect total AC sales for both domestic and industrial uses will be about 15 per cent higher in terms of volume than that of last year. The sales growth would be despite a 7.5-15 per cent average price increase of air conditioners (ACs) across models compared to last year mainly due to higher input cost and a depreciating rupee against the dollar which has made
imports costlier. “The industry views that this year air conditioner sales will register 15 per cent growth over last year when a total of 3.4 million units (both home air conditioner and industrial air conditioner) were sold in the country,” B. Thiagarajan, president (Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Products Group), Blue Star Ltd, told IANS. “We are expecting this sales growth despite on an average 7.5 per cent to 15 per cent price hike across models. Higher prices are mainly due to rupee depreciation and higher material cost like copper and tin,” Thiagarajan said. According to him, due to higher prices, consumers, who would have liked to buy a 5 Star AC, will actually end up buying a 4 Star, and those interested in buying a split AC, will opt for a window AC. Solar storm not as strong as feared WASHINGTON: A solar storm of charged particles which erupted two days ago hit the Earth today but did not cause any of the geomagnetic disruptions that scientists feared. The storm, which scientists claimed to be the largest in five years, was triggered by a pair of solar flares early on Tuesday and is growing like a giant soap bubble. “The coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the R3 (Strong) Radio Blackout event from 0024 UTC March 7 (7.24pm EST March 6) arrived at ACE at 1045 GMT today (15.15 IST),” National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said. “All told, it’s not a terribly strong event,” said physicist Joe Kunches of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The solar outburst struck Earth’s magnetic field around 6.05am EST, Kunches said, cutting some radio communications at the poles, but it didn’t upset electronics and commu-
nications elsewhere. Earlier Kunches said, “Space weather has gotten very interesting over the last 24 hours.” “This was quite the Super Tuesday — you bet,” Kunches
was quoted as saying by SPACE.com. Several NASA spacecraft caught videos of the solar flare as it hurled a wave of solar plasma and charged particles, called a coronal mass ejection (CME), into space. Early predictions estimated that the CME will reach Earth at 5pm (India time) today, with the effects likely lasting for 24 hours, and possibly lingering into Friday, Kunches said. The solar eruptions occurred when the Sun let loose two huge X-class solar flares that ranked among the strongest type of Sun storms. And the biggest of those flares registered as an ‘X5.4 class’ solar storm on the space weather scale and the CME from this flare is the one that could disrupt satellite operations, Kunches said.

It’s repercussion may not be felt immediately, but over the next few weeks it’s sure to gather steam. But we must remember that while we should hold Invisible Children to the sane operating standards we expect from everyone else, we should not let it detract from the issue of Kony himself. If the group has misused funds then they too should be punished accordingly, but the child soldiers of Africa must come first.
WHY WE LOVE Solar Storms
W
e’ve been told that the Earth is going to be hit by a massive Solar Storm later today, and it could, in theory, knock out a large chunk of our electronics. We will not be seeing apocalyptic visions of charred satellites hurtling down to Earth, but still, it should give us pause to wonder about life without the Web, Facebook and Twitter. A few days without technology may do us a world of good.

Why the ideas of Ayn Rand still matter Point Blank Padmini C
P
aul Krugman apparently once wrote, “There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs.” There are few people in the literary world who have ever commanded the kind of following as Ayn Rand. Say Rand in a room full of people and it will neatly part into three. Those who don't know her, those that are ready to die for her and those that will want to kill you for having said her name out loud. To be sure, there will be no in-betweeners. Like her or hate her, there is no ignoring her. Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum as she was born, died exactly 30 years ago, on March 6, 1982. But if anything, Rand's philosophy and legacy shines brighter than ever. Survey after survey, especially ones in the US had overwhelming numbers of respondents say that the most influential book in their life, after the Bible, was Rand's Atlas Shrugged. More than half a century after their publication, Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead are flying off the shelves faster than ever before, with over a million copies sold each year, unfailingly ranking on the bestselling lists of bookstores across the world. But it's not her immense popularity or her proficiency that's been called into debate. It's her founding philosophy – Objectivism – a theory of hyper individualism, that's been, and will continue to be, a matter of public discourse. Objectivism, simply put, promotes atheism, laissez faire capitalism, intellectualism, rationalism while rejecting collectivism, altruism and most of all, statism. So essentially, there is no such thing as public. There's only individual people and individual rights. Rand, for her part, claimed that she was “primarily the creator of a new code of morality.” Hank Rearden, the protagonist of Atlas

Challenges galore
It's a pity that the second largest film industry in the country hasn't won even a single National award this year. I wonder if our filmmakers even bother to give importance to awards and going by the film I have been watching, I don't think Telugu films will ever win an award. However, the surprising part was the awards committee's decision to not give the award for Best Telugu film. A couple of films like Sri Rama Rajyam and Rajanna were indeed good last year. Are Telugu films being intentionally snubbed? It's a topic worth debating upon. Yashwant S Kukatpally
Despite several changes in the mindset of people and society in general, women continue to grapple with several kinds of issues. Be it at work place or home, we have innumerable examples to determine how badly women are treated throughout the country. While hundreds of women have been leading exemplery lives and continue to inspire millions of others, I believe that a lot needs to be done to empower them. Safety and equal rights should be the main priority and it's not just government's duty but the society should take steps to ensure that women are treated with respect.

Shrugged perhaps essays her world-view best when he defends himself on trial and says, “I work for nothing but my own profit, which I make by selling a product needed by men who are willing and able to buy it. I do not produce it for their benefit at the expense of mine, and they do not buy it for my benefit at the expense of theirs... I made my money by my own effort, in free exchange and through the voluntary consent of every man I dealt with... I refuse to apologise for my ability — I refuse to apologise for my success — I refuse to apologise for my money.” It's not hard to imagine why a philosophy that blatantly extols “the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life,” would be hard to accept. It's mainly because it defeats the idea of man as a noble creature, lead to the dissolution of the concept of a collective society, and discount any altruistic motives we might intrinsically possess, taking us one step closer to a dogeat-dog world, in which none of us want to live. That said, it's becoming increasingly hard for us to accept the realities of living in a welfare

state that's buckling under the weight of selfdefeating handouts and bailouts. Randian heroes would have a ready question, echoing ours. At what point can we stop feeling guilty for asking — Why should I pay? Why should I pay constantly, repeatedly, endlessly for a class of people that don't seem to be doing anything to help themselves? Why rely on my charity than earn by their own intellect? Why rob the rich to pay for the poor? Why not instead create a level ground, forcing each one, depending on their might and merit, to fend for themselves fairly, equally, even if it means selfishly? They are simply questions. But they need to be asked. We need not give into any of our baser instincts. Nor do we have to become slaves to our self-interests. But we need to question the tenets of our morality from time to time. Just to see if we are indeed guilty as charged or are living under a sense of misguided loyalties which are ultimately crippling us. That we dare to ask, to each be his own, is why Ayn Rand still matters. The writer works for Postnoon
Student career at stake Iitjee was the perfect way to examine students. And you mentioned students trying out their luck… haha... well try your luck with Iit paper of any year... I bet you will score below 50, out of 200... the pattern was designed to eliminate luck factor due to multi-correct answer questions and integer type questions. Also, including board marks is a stupidity as the board exams are of extremely low standard with many students scoring 98%+ each year. Trust me, pressure to score 95%+ in board exams is more than pressure to give 2-3 entrance tests.
My last point, why are student's opinions being ignored? Like the entire student community is against the motion and ‘hon'ble’ HRD minister is just keen on imposing it in a hurry, without even testing the system... perhaps to try to bring Congress's image as a 'reformer'. The article says that the new system will become perfect after a few years. Why risk careers of millions of students till that? hat makes any band unique is the experience that it offers the audience. It’s what becomes the band’s signature sound. We are very close to developing that. Our music is soulful, it’s ageless and it’s very powerful. That’s what sets us apart,” insists Himanshu Sharma, lead vocalist of Mehraj. It’s not hard to believe him. Everything about Mehraj is an intriguing amalgamation of genres, influences and cultures. Among the eight band members — Sachin, Parsa Dattasai, Aslam Khan, Cherian Thomas, Ram
Mohan, Ramesh, Nitin Kumar and Himanshu — they play the harmonica, tabla, guitar, drums, sarangi and the violin to create experimental music that transcends genres. Perhaps that’s why despite being relatively new (the band only formed in 2011) they are already carving a niche for themselves on the city’s music scene. They have been playing at various local events and are now swamped with invitations to visit campuses across the country. It also explains why they rank among the favourites to play at the Battle of Bands, set to happen on Thursday at Hard Rock Cafe, Hyderabad. “We are new, in that, we haven’t been around for too long. But we have evolved as a band, found our groove, and

come a long way from where we began; back then we were largely doing covers. Now we have our own compositions and we are looking to even release a couple videos,” one of the band members said. When coerced to share with us a track or two from their list, the band members finally reveal that they are going to be brand new composition at the competition. “The track is called Ram Ram. It has a very strong folk and also blues tone to it. It’s not about religion but about humanity. It explores the various questions we face as humans,” explains Himanshu. With shows like The Dewarists and Coke Studio having gone viral, there seems to be a resurgence of interest in folk
and fusion. Does Mehraj agree? “Absolutely. Coke Studio, at least the Pakistan edition, was the best thing to happen to modern music, especially to fusion. It ensures that you are moving closer to the world music scene, combining the best of tradition with the best of modern. Now, if something of that quality music was showcased here, that would be great.” Even as almost all of them hold full-time occupations, they make time for practice gigs in anticipation of the big day. “We are very excited to be playing at an event that’s so global in its scope. If we win here, there’s no turning back,” say the band members buzzing with energy even as they make their preparations for next week.

Face your pain Suffering from an acute shooting pain on one side of your face when you do simple day-to-day activities? This could be due to Trigeminal Neuralgia. Suicide disease Anishaa Kumar anishaa.k@postnoon.com
W
hen Bollywood actor Salman Khan was diagnosed with an illness that took him to the US for treatment many questions arose about his unknown nerve disorder. What happened? The answer — Trigeminal Neuralgia. According to Dr Sudhir Kumar, consultant neurologist, Apollo Hospital, “Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition characterised by facial pain. The pain is usually on one side, but in some rare occasions it may occur on the entire face.” The pain occurs all of a sudden and may remain for a few seconds. It may happen once a day or sometimes several times in a day, he explains.
Cause According to Dr Sudhir, “The fifth nerve of the cranial nerve is the trigeminal nerve. Trigeminal neuralgia may occur due to two reasons. The first being structural problems where the blood vessel infringes with the

any studies have termed Trigeminal Neuralgia as the “Suicide disease” as according to statistics, “of those who live with Trigeminal Neuralgia for more than 3 years about half commit suicide.” Dr Sudhir Kumar states, “This term is not normally used but it may be because of the immense pain and difficulty in doing dayto-day activities that people have taken the steps. This may be not that applicable nowadays as care for this disease is available in all hospitals in the City.”
nerve. The second and a very rare cause could be due to tumours. Another cause could be due to multiple sclerosis which is uncommon and occurs mostly in young women. In most of the cases it is impossible to diagnose what the cause could be.”
Diagnosis One may wonder that if the cause cannot be diagnosed then how is the problem identified. He explains, “Based on the patient’s description a clinical diagnosis of the disease can be made. An MRI of the brain is conducted to find out if there is any secondary cause of the problem such as a tumour.”
Triggers The triggers of trigeminal neuralgia are usually unknown. Explains Dr Sudhir, “There may or may not be any triggers for the illness. But in some cases it happens when people wash their face or are exposed to cold wind or due to the air from an air conditioner.”
Treatment For treatment a number of options are available. “When it comes to treatment, medicines are usually sufficient. A number of medicines are available. In case a person does not find any relief from medications or is suffering due to side effects of the medicine such as dizziness or drowsiness, then surgery is advised.” Surgery is done to decompress the nerve and is known as micro-vascular decompression, he explains. Another option is radiation treatment which is known as radio frequency ablation.
Recurrence and prevention Can a person recover completely from this illness? According to Dr Sudhir, there is no permanent solution though for some people the pain subsides on its own but for many there is a possibility of recurrence. He explains, “Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic problem, so a permanent solution cannot be provided.” The condition cannot be prevented. It may occur in adults and older people above the age of 30. Dr Sudhir mentions that the problem is quite common in the City. He says, “Many people initially confuse it with a dental or ENT problem. Only when they visit a neurologist when the pain does not subside, is the problem diagnosed. There are usually 4-5 cases in a week. Major hospitals in the City are equipped to treat the problem.”
Weight loss supplements are no good WASHINGTON: Weight loss supplements are not really effective in helping you shed weight and may have unpleasant or serious sideeffects. Melinda Manore, from Oregon State University, reviewing evidence surrounding hundreds of weight loss supplements, concluded that no single product results in significant weight loss and many have side-effects. “What people want is to lose weight and maintain or increase lean tissue mass,” Manore said. “There is no evidence that any one supplement does this. And some have side effects ranging from the unpleasant, such as bloating and gas, to very serious issues such as strokes and heart problems.” A few products, including green tea, fibre and low-fat dairy supplements, can have a modest benefit of three to four pounds, but it is important to know that most of these supplements were tested as part of a reduced calorie diet, the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism reports. “For most people, unless you alter your diet and get daily exercise, no supplement is going to have a big impact,” said Manore. Manore looked at supplements that fell into four categories: products such as chitosan that block absorption of fat or carbohydrates, stimulants such as caffeine or ephedra that increase metabolism, products such as conjugated linoleic acid that claim to change the body composition by decreasing fat, and appetite suppressants. She found that many products had no randomised clinical trials examining their effectiveness, and most of the research studies did not include exercise. “I don’t know how you eliminate exercise from the equation. The data is very strong that exercise is crucial to not only losing weight and preserving muscle mass, but keeping the weight off,” she said. Manore said the key to weight loss is to eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats, reduce calorie intake of high-fat foods, and to keep moving. “Nothing will have much effect unless you exercise and eat fruits and vegetables,” Manroe added. Zero-exercise during pregnancy sows the seeds of backache NEW DELHI: In a study delving into the causes of backache among women, the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) Wednesday said postural changes during the pregnancy months is when back pain problems begin in over 50 per cent of cases. Out of 510 patients reporting back pain, nearly 43 per cent were women. Among them, nearly 82 per cent had done no exercises at all during pregnancy. “Complaints of backache during and immediately after pregnancy are very common. The increasing weight and the forward shift of the centre of gravity add to the problem,” said HS Chhabra, medical director of the south Delhi-based ISIC. “General conditioning and back strengthening exercises
during and after pregnancy help to counter this. However, this is seldom done in our country,” added Chhabra. The study said, “In over 60 per cent women respondents, the pain disappeared within two days after delivery. In those with recurrent back pain from previous pregnancies, as many as 82 per cent have persistent pain at 18 months.” Specific back exercises under proper medical guidance and proper posture can help in prevention of recurrence of back pain. “Pregnant women must ensure that they do all the proper exercises to avoid back pain during this stage. The result of the study reveals that more than 80 per cent of women had not done any general conditioning and strengthening exercises after pregnancy,” Chhabra added. IANS

Load up on the calcium
Dr Suneetha Sapur
My doctor says I have brittle bones and has asked me to lose weight so that there’s no added pressure on my system. Please advise what kind of food can I eat to strengthen my bones and also how I can lose weight by exercising diet restrictions. You have not mentioned your age. The peak bone mass takes place up to the age of 30 years, that means the calcium is deposited in the bones and the density of the bone mass increases up to the age of 30 years. Later even if you take an excess intake of calcium the density of the bone cannot be increased. Intake of calcium rich foods and adequate calcium in adolescence and up to the age of 30 is important to increase the density of the bone mass. Women are more prone to osteoporosis once they reach menopause that is they become brittle and can break easily. Low bone density is one of the risk factors for osteoporosis. If you are overweight reducing weight is important and also consume calcium rich foods along with vitamin D. Vegetarian diet contains phytates which may inhibit the absorption of calcium, soaking legumes can reduce the phytate activity to a certain extent. Include milk and milk products, as the absorption of calcium from milk is high. Regular exercise needs to be part of your everyday routine. Marriage lifts survival chances for heart patients: study WASHINGTON: Married adults are more than three times more likely to survive the critical first three months after heart surgery than their single counterparts, according to a US study. “That’s a dramatic difference in survival rates for single people, during the most critical post-operative recovery period,” said sociologist Ellen Idler, lead author of the study in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. “We found that marriage boosted survival whether the patient was a man or a woman,” said Idler, from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in a statement issued by the American Sociological Association. The idea that married people live longer than singles has been documented as far back as the mid-19th century
in France, but Idler’s team opted to focus on a major health crisis. Its research included both data from the Centers for Disease Control’s national death index and interviews with more than 500 patients who had undergone heart bypass surgery. Married patients had “a more positive outlook” going into the operating room, noted Idler, whose study appears in this month’s Journal of Health and Social Behavior. “When asked whether they would be able to manage the pain and discomfort, or their worries about the surgery, those who had spouses were more likely to say, yes,” she said. ibhu is an Orissa born young designer who moved to America to pursue his higher education. Armed with a degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York he soon joined the reputed American label J. Mendel as a design director. However, on glancing through Bibhu’s work you may not realise it is has been created by an Indian. He is recognised for his elegant gowns, jackets, trousers and skirts that epitomise a clean American aesthetic. Bibhu’s namesake brand was picked up by the Council of Fashion Designers of America to be its member in 2010. Bibhu’s family is based out of Rourkela in Orissa. However, he proudly states that his design inspirations remain Indian fabrics, its vibrant colours, and the crafts of his native land. At the recently held Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai, the designer bought his collection from New York to showcase for the first time in India. At the event he even spoke about his interest to connect with Indian artisans for his work. On being asked how his brand reflects Indianness, the designer said, “It is Indian because it carried the DNA of my heritage and roots in many special ways.” That’s enough reason for us to have him on this list.

his list would be incomplete without mentioning Indian designer Manish Arora. You may argue that Manish is a Delhibased designer and shouldn’t be included in this list. But in my opinion the designer gained recognition when he started showcasing his work as part of London Fashion Week and soon after that at Paris Fashion Week. It was stellar reviews by noted fashion publications such as International Herald Tribune, Women’s Wear Daily, New York Times, Style.com, Vogue, etc which gained the designer popularity in the West. His global appeal increased even more when pop stars like Katy Perry, M.I.A, Britney Spears chose to wear his creations to important events. Apart from this he has also collaborated with international giants like MAC, Disney, Swarovski, Nespresso and Swatch watches. Needless to say, these associations propelled the brand to the top crust of the fashion list. He was recently hired as the Artistic Director of French label Paco Rabanne, which now puts his work on the fashion map. Never before was an Indian designer hired at such a position for a French fashion house. Manish now juggles his time between Paris and New Delhi. His Indian influence is very obvious be it in the form of the colours he uses or the craftsmanship. Yet his appeal continues to grow internationally as he has successfully been able to combine the best of Indian and international.

Winner of the new generation award for three seasons by the British Fashion Council helped build her brand very early on. Bold, modern, traditional, tribal and contemporary are some of the words used to describe her design aesthetics. The designer has been able to strike the right note when it comes to making a unique accessories line. With names likes ‘Punk Rajah’ and ‘Gypsy Rani’ one can make out that her inspiration has Indian roots. Born in Manipur, the designer visits India almost every year to spend her holidays with family in Delhi. Though her visits go unnoticed in the local media, the designer is fast becoming a celebrated contemporary jewellery designer with a fan following that includes names like R&B singer Rihanna, Britain’s ‘first lady’ Samantha Cameron, songstress Florence Welch, and Samantha many more. Mr Nookayya loses connection Manchu Manoj starrer Mr.Nookayya is high on adrenaline and delivers the thrills, but it focuses too much on style
E
after a while. There are lots of chases, car crashes and people flying in the air in slow-motion throughout the film. Manchu Manoj is in his elements when it comes to intense sequences. Kriti Khar b anda, Sana Khan and Vennela Kishore are passable in their roles. Murali Sharma is perhaps the only actor in the film who does a good job and Raja adds a fine twist towards the end. Yuvan Shankar Raja adds zing to the film's music. The film falters majorly in terms of narration and there's hardly any focus on the story. Mr.Nookayya is like a bottle of a soft drink which loses its fizz once opened.
ver since Manchu Manoj was named as 'Rocking Star', he has made it a point to add at least some elements in his films to justify the tag. From daredevil stunts to style, Manchu Manoj has been playing his cards quite carefully. In Mr. Nookayya, he gets a free rein to experiment in terms of action sequences and style quotient. Not so surprisingly, those are the only two things which stand out in the film. Directed by Ani, the film is about an orphan who keeps stealing mobile phones and lives a carefree life. He christens himself Nokia and one fine day, he comes across Anuradha (Kriti) and steals her suitcase full of money. Anuradha is shocked to know that she has lost the money and attempts suicide. How this incident changes Nokia's life forms the rest of the story. Mr.Nookayya does boast of well executed action scenes and the slow-motion cinematography is dazzling in few scenes; however, it's overdone and gets boring

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Lin Dan may keep on going Richard Eaton
BIRMINGHAM: Olympic and world champion Lin Dan (right) reached the quarter-finals of the All-England Open on Thursday and revealed that he may not retire after the London Olympics. Lin’s 21-13, 21-16 win over fellow left-hander Chong Wei Feng keeps alive a chance of becoming the first men’s singles player of the open era to win five All-England titles. “I will probably relax for a period of time and then continue,” said the 28-year-old from Fujian. Lin next plays Taufik Hidayat, the unseeded former Olympic and world champion from Indonesia, who survived a late fightback from Chen Jin, the 2010 world champion from China, who saved two match points but could not quite save a third in a 21-19, 21-19 defeat Lin expressed support for Peter Gade, the 35-year-old former world number one from Denmark, whose last AllEngland came to a controversial end with a first round defeat in a match which started five hours late and ended in the early hours of Thursday morning. “He has my sympathy — he was unlucky,” said Lin, who is said to be considering a trip to Copenhagen to play an exhibition with Gade. Lin is seeded for a repeat encounter in the final with Lee Chong Wei, the defending champion from Malaysia, to whom the Chinese player lost in last year’s final but overcame in an exceptional world final at Wembley in August. Lee also won, and similarly indicated that his predicted
retirement at the London Olympics will not happen. Instead he will make one last attempt to win the world title next year before considering a career in coaching. Lee’s 23-21, 21-18 win over Hans-Christian Vittinghus, the unseeded but improving Dane, required him to save game points at 19-20 and 20-21, and to continue to work hard through the rest of the match. “But that was what I needed,” said Lee, who now has a quarter-final with an unseeded survivor, Dionysius Rumbaka.
The former top 20 player from Indonesia suggested he is again playing to that standard with a well-taken 21-17, 21-17 win over Sho Sasaki, the sixth seeded Japanese player. The top seed in the women’s singles, Wang Yihan, reached the quarter-finals even more comfortably and earned a repeat of the All-England finals of 2009 and 2010. The Chinese player was a 2113, 21-12 winner against her compatriot Liu Xin, which means she now plays Denmark’s Tine Baun, to whom she lost the
year before last but beat three years ago. “Tomorrow is very important,” Wang said. Baun showed no signs of her hip problem and was forceful and dominating in a 21-9, 21-17 win over Ai Goto, the world number 22 from Japan. Earlier another Wang also become involved in a repeat of an All-England final. This saw the titleholder from China, Wang Shixian, repeat last year’s win over Eriko Hirose, the determined, athletic Japanese player, by 21-10, 21-19.

Bumps and byes at Indian Wells INDIAN WELLS: Irina Falconi, Gisela Dulko and Johanna Larsson all advanced to the second round at the Indian Wells tournament early on Thursday as their opponents withdrew with injuries. Australia’s Jelena Dokic pulled out after just nine minutes in the first set with a right wrist injury, sending Dulko, of Argentina, into the second round, where she will face second seed Maria Sharapova. Dulko has reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells twice, in 2004 and 2006. Sweden’s Larsson was 4-1 ahead in the first set when qualifier Greta Arn of Hungary retired from their match with a neck injury. Larsson will face former world number one Ana Ivanovic, who is seeded 15th, in the next round. Arn reached the third round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals in Monterrey, Mexico, last month, where she lost to Romania’s Alexandra Cadantu. American wild card Falconi advanced after Alexandra Dulgheru withdrew from their match with a right knee injury. Dulgheru won the first set 6-4 and was trailing 5-2 in the second when she pulled the plug. Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson swept past Eleni Daniilidou of Greece in her opening match 64, 7-6 (7/4). The 28-year-old Arvidsson kept her unforced errors down and won 65 per cent of her second serve points in the one hour, 55 minute match.
London 2012 cost rises to £11bn T
he overall cost of the 2012 Olympics to the public purse has risen to around £11bn while security costs at Olympic venues have more than doubled, a report by parliament’s spending watchdog, published in The Guardian, has warned. The public accounts committee has calculated that the cost of the Olympics is overrunning its £9.3bn budget once unaccounted-for costs are included. The government rejected the committee’s claim. The report stated that the budget increase could have been lower if the government and the Olympic authorities had taken a tougher stance over price negotiations with its
main private contractor G4S. Margaret Hodge, committee chair, said MPs were particularly concerned about signifi-
cant increases in the security bill and said questions should be asked about London’s organising committee Locog.
“Locog now needs more than twice the number of security guards it originally estimated and the costs have roughly doubled. It is staggering that the original estimates were so wrong. Locog has had to renegotiate its contract with G4S for venue security from a weak negotiating position and there is a big question mark over whether it secured a good deal for the taxpayer,” she said. Locog’s original estimate for the number of security guards in and around the venues was 10,000 – a “finger in the air estimate”, according to the PAC report. The government announced in December that figure has more than doubled to 23,700.
Security costs from the Olympics budget for venue security have risen from £282m to £553m in just a year. An initial deal with G4S worth £86m had been signed in December 2010. But the following year this had to be rewritten as Locog received further advice about the needs for an increase in security provisions. As a result, G4S’s contract increased to £284 million. Estimates for venue security could have been better informed at an earlier date, and that late planning undermined the government’s negotiating position and ability to drive down costs, the committee claims.

DRAVID: The Great Wall of India Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur
T
he Great Wall of India will finally be dismantled and consigned to history. Rahul Dravid could not have timed his retirement better. The Wall was cracking a bit during the recent tour Down Under. Getting castled was not something which one of the world’s greatest batsmen enjoyed. Throughout his career, Dravid was known for his selfless service to Indian cricket. Steady, reliable, orthodox with immense concentration. These words describe Dravid the batsman. He played by the book. The feet were always in position, the strokes played with grace and timing. Even a defensive shot was correct, pleasing to the eye. His contributions to Indian cricket are immeasurable. Statistics itself makes Dravid one of legends of cricket. What he meant to Indian cricket is colossal. Jostling for attention among eye-catchers like Tendulkar, Sehwag, Laxman and Ganguly was never going to be easy. But Dravid’s sound technique ensured that he would be there amongst them. His debut itself back in the
summer of 1996 at Lord’s was an example. Though Ganguly stole the show with a hundred on debut, Dravid’s 95 got noticed for its technique. Dravid did not mind playing second fiddle. But he always proved pivotal in India gaining the advantage. Dravid’s rare talent was spotted first by former cricketer Keki Tarapore. The boy Dravid was already showing the technique and temperament which could pencil him for higher things. He made his Ranji Trophy debut in 1991 against Maharashtra and, batting at number seven, scored 82. By the end of the 1991-92 season, he started scoring heavily and subsequently was in the reckoning for even higher things. It did not come in the format at which he is best. Picked for the Singer Cup one-day matches against Sri
Lanka in Singapore in 1996, Dravid disappointed. Then came England. Dravid established himself firmly after that. His maiden Test hundred came against South Africa. Then there was a long wait before his second hundred. There was no stopping after that with very few lean periods. India’s best number three batsman had taken shape. Dravid also laid to rest all doubts about his one-day value by doing what he knows best – score heavily. He was the highest run-getter in the 1999 World Cup. Dravid was one of the chief architects of
India’s great run in the New Millennium. His partnership with Laxman to bring India victory from a hopeless situation against Australia in 2001, revived Indian cricket. He also revealed his powers of concentration by batting 835 minutes in the two innings to secure India their first win in a decade in Australia. Dravid stood on par with all the greatest in the world. He had emerged from the playing second fiddle to being the prime player for his team. By the end of the decade, his powers seemed to be waning. There was a phase when Dravid became a strokeless wonder. There were hints from the critics that his time had come. He somehow managed to stay focused. The start of this decade brought about the revival. He was a major success on the tour to the West Indies. England last year was the crowning glory. He stood head and shoulders above everybody else with some of the finest performances of his life. It would have made sense if Dravid had quit then. Probably he wanted to see India back on track which kept him going that bit longer. Dravid always played the game with dignity and poise. He won’t be another brick in wall. He was the Wall.

Watson will ‘carry’ tired Aussies SYDNEY: Stand-in Australian captain Shane Watson vowed on Friday to lead from the front with his team battling fatigue after a gruelling summer, as they set off for a tour of the West Indies. The one-day squad left Sydney for the Caribbean a little more than 12 hours after winning the tri-series title against Sri Lanka in Adelaide. The players were woken before daybreak to catch flights to Sydney and then on to the West Indies with a five-match one-day series, beginning on March 16, crammed over 10 days. Some of the team will then back up for two Twenty20 matches and three Tests. Watson said his injury-hit season made him fresher than those involved in a heavy eight-month schedule which has included tours to Sri Lanka and South Africa and a full domestic programme against New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka. “From my perspective, I’m very fresh after missing the majority of the summer so I’m really excited about being able to go and continue to play a lot more cricket,” he said at Sydney airport. Watson led Australia to victory in the deciding third final against Sri Lanka on Thursday in the absence of the injured Michael Clarke. Clarke’s hamstring strain has already ruled him out of the opening phase of matches in the West Indies.
Smith, Kallis spare SA the blushes DUNEDIN: Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis steered South Africa out of trouble after early setbacks against New Zealand on the third day of the first Test at University Oval on Friday. At tea South Africa were 175 for two in their second innings, leading New Zealand by 140 runs with Smith unbeaten on 80 and Kallis not out 66. The New Zealand first innings was wrapped up early in the morning session for 273 after some powerful hitting by tailender Trent Boult, giving the home side a 35-run lead. Shortly after the visitors knocked off the deficit, Doug Bracewell removed Alviro Petersen and Hashim Amla in the same over, bringing Smith and Kallis together with the score at 47-2. But the South African captain and the veteran all-rounder were seldom troubled by the New Zealand attack as they methodically added 87 runs in the middle session. Bracewell has been the only successful New Zealand bowler. Boult finished unbeaten on 33 with 22 of the runs coming off one over by Vernon Philander.

Terry admits players partly to blame for AVB sacking LONDON: Chelsea captain John Terry has admitted that his teammates must accept a share of the blame for the departure of manager Andre Villas-Boas after less than a year in charge. The Portuguese coach became the latest Chelsea manager to be shown the door by owner Roman Abramovich after a sequence of poor results which has left the club outside the top four and struggling to stay in the Champions League.
Villas-Boas’s exit came amid widespread reports of dressing room unrest, with senior Chelsea players openly questioning the manager’s tactics and team selections. However Terry admitted that the poor performances of Chelsea’s players were as much to blame as anything else. “Sad for Andre, because unfortunately it falls on his head, when I think the players would hold their hands up and say, ‘Clearly, we’ve
not been good enough and we all made mistakes together’,” Terry told Chelsea TV. “He’s the man whose head’s on the block and unfortunately goes.” Terry, who made a surprise recovery from a knee injury to earn a place on the bench for Tuesday’s FA Cup replay win over Birmingham, said the 2-0 victory was dedicated to caretaker Roberto Di Matteo, assistant Eddie Newton and Villas-Boas. “We dug deep for him, for
Robbie as well taking charge, Eddie coming in as well -- it’s nice to have familiar faces around who know the club,” he said. “We’ve done enough talking amongst ourselves over the last three or four months. Robbie came in and said those exact same things as well. “He’s been here, played here, the same as Eddie. “We have to fight for the shirt and that was the message to the lads.”

Barça goes on Real hunt Tim Hanlon
MADRID: Hailed as the greatest club side of all time after their European master class, Barcelona face humble Racing Santander Sunday, trying to hunt down Real Madrid, the best team in Spain. Lionel Messi’s record-breaking five goals in the 7-1 Champions League rout of Bayer Leverkusen eased Barcelona into the quarter-finals, but it’s Real Madrid who rule the roost on the home front, boasting a 10-point lead going into the weekend. Barcelona, La Liga champions for the past three seasons, have not shown the same consistency this term. But on occasions, such as their 3-1 win at Real Madrid in December and against Bayer at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, they have demonstrated
they can still produce breathtaking football. “We do not feel unbeatable although we do feel strong and confident in our style of football,” said Barca star Xavi Hernandez. “A lot of teams have already beaten us and we are 10 points off the lead, so we are definitely not invincible.” Messi on Wednesday became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League tie, a performance which has led to lavish comparisons with great sides of the past like Rinus Michels’ Ajax or the AC Milan of Arrigo Sacchi. “It is an honour to be compared with the best teams ever like Sacchi’s Milan although we are not trying to judge ourselves like that,” added Xavi. “But Messi is incomparable. There is no one like him who can make the dif-
ference in so many games.” Barcelona’s problem domestically has come away from home where they have won only five of a possible 12 games and now face a Racing side third from bottom and scrapping for points. “We are a team of winners and it makes us angry if we lose a title. We want to win everything and we will compete to the end. We are playing well and if we keep enjoying our football the results will come,” said Xavi. Barca have been up against a prolific Real side who have given little room for error as they have won 20 out of their last 21 games — the only blemish was the loss to Barcelona. They travel to Real Betis with a comfortable lead, but Brazilian star Kaka insists they cannot yet relax. “We need to keep picking up points as we are up against a very strong rival.”
Los Angeles Galaxy last January saying he did not want to settle for only one Major League Soccer title after ending a landmark five-year deal with his first MLS crown. On Saturday, the English midfielder gets back to business when the Galaxy’s 2012 season opens at home against Real Salt Lake with a ceremony and the hanging of the club’s third MLS championship banner. “It’s not unfinished business. It’s just doing it over again,” Beckham said when announcing his new one-year Galaxy deal. “I’ve never come back after a season with the Galaxy and been a champion. I wanted to have that feeling. “We’re not finished. I’m not just happy with one championship. I want more.” Beckham, who turns 37 in May, won six English Premier League titles with Manchester United and a Spanish league crown with Real Madrid. Now he will try to make the Galaxy the first back-to-back MLS champion since Houston in 2006 and 2007 and only the third all-time after DC United won the inaugural two crowns in 1996 and 1997.

Bilbao crack Fortress Old Trafford Ian Whittell
MANCHESTER:
Manchester United’s miserable European season continued at Old Trafford as they suffered a stunning 3-2 firstleg defeat by Athletic Bilbao in their Europa League last 16 tie here on Thursday. Bilbao appeared to have taken complete control of the game — and the overall tie — when the hugely impressive Iker Muniain shot his side into a 3-1 lead, only for Wayne Rooney to reduce the arrears with an injurytime penalty. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said his side had deserved to lose. “We were well beaten, I have to say they were the better team,” Ferguson told Channel Five. “I thought our defending wasn’t very good tonight and that kept us on the back foot all the time. Our attacking play was very good at times and it was an open, entertaining match. But Bilbao were the better side.” Rooney’s 23rd goal of the season had initially handed United an undeserved lead before Fernando Llorente equalised towards the end of the first half. Oscar de Marcos struck to put the visitors ahead after 71 minutes, appearing on the end of one of the numerous slick Bilbao passing attacks to which United had no answer and making it 2-1. Muniain started the move before Ander Herrera lobbed through a weighted pass, met by a first-time, left-foot volley from
de Marcos, eight yards out, which left the United goalkeeper David de Gea rooted to the spot on its way into the bottom corner. Then, with one minute of normal time left, Bilbao claimed a third as Muniain pounced ahead of a sluggish Rafael to slam the ball into an open goal after de Gea had palmed away de Marcos’ low shot. The goal was shrouded in controversy as it stemmed from a Bilbao free-kick that had been
awarded in a bizarre incident after United defender Patrice Evra lost his boot. Rooney handed United some glimmer of hope in the 91st minute, convincingly converting from the penalty spot after de Marcos had capped an eventful night by handling a cross from Javier Hernandez. United, winners of just one of their previous four home European ties this season, endured a torrid start before tak-
Sporting puts one past City to take lead LISBON:
Manchester City’s quest for Europa League glory received a setback on Thursday when the Premier League leaders lost 1-0 at Sporting Lisbon in the
first leg of their last-16 tie. City had crushed Portuguese league leaders Porto 6-1 on aggregate in the previous round, but they found Sporting — 14
points off the pace in the Portuguese Liga 1 a much more obdurate adversary at Jose Alvalade Stadium. Brazilian centre-back Xandao claimed the game’s only goal with a clever back-heel in the 51st minute to give Ricardo Sa Pinto’s side a narrow advantage ahead of the second leg at the City of Manchester Stadium next week. “This result was not a surprise, anything can happen in football. I don’t think we deserved to lose,” said City coach Roberto Mancini. “We did not play well. We had chances to score, but we didn’t take them. It will be a different game in Manchester. When we have chances to score, we will score.” Victory extended Sporting’s unbeaten European home record to 10 games.
ing the lead. The opening goal came very much against the run of play as United made a rare foray into the Bilbao area, Hernandez and Ryan Giggs linking for the latter to burst into the 18-yard box. Giggs, in turn, found Hernandez, whose shot was saved, one-handed, by Gorka Iraizoz but the goalkeeper only succeeded in pushing the ball into the path of Rooney, who tapped into the gaping net.
It was an injustice for Bilbao after Llorente’s early shot that skidded just wide of the goal before Muniain failed with a penalty appeal after Chris Smalling appeared to tug his shirt. But the goal did not appear to knock the visitors out of their stride. Llorente headed just over from a de Marcos cross while, closest yet to a Bilbao goal, Markel Susaeta was clean through after 33 minutes, from de Marcos’ pass, but elected to attempt a chip that flew just off target. De Gea also saved well from Andoni Iraola’s shot, made from a tight angle, before Bilbao claimed the equaliser they so thoroughly deserved a minute before the interval. Llorente started the move that led to his goal, part of a flowing period of Bilbao possession, with a pass to Iraola, who sought out Susaeta over-lapping on the right. The resulting cross was met by Llorente with a superb, closerange header that gave de Gea no chance. Bilbao were no less impressive at the start of the second half, Muniain’s darting run ending with a shot de Gea just touched around his post. Llorente then had two glorious opportunities to put his side in front, firing into the side netting before unleashing a powerful strike that de Gea saved spectacularly.
