DAWN OF THE ANTI-HERO

ANTONY RUBBISHES AMMO ‘RUMOURS’

Nearly 90 years to this date, F Scott Fitzgerald created what has now come to be called The Great American Novel. But The Great Gatsby didn’t just become a literary classic, it marked a departure from noble protagonists to make way for the anti-hero. Today, we look at some of the best literary characters.

Dismissing as "rumours" reports about shortage of certain tank ammunition, defence minister AK Antony today said there will always be "shortcomings" but the country was in a much stronger position as compared to the past.

hile the riot-hit areas maintained an uneasy calm a palpable tension is spreading to nearby areas. On Tuesday morning shops and establishments in many areas such as Lalithabag, Kalikanagar, Aliabad and nearby areas were closed. Reports said the fear spread after stone-throwing took place in Shamsheergunj locality last night. Enquiries revealed that rumours are spreading about a possible flare up after the curfew is relaxed. Meanwhile, some unsocial elements on today morning set ablaze a religious flag at Aliabad area the Old City. The flag was intact in the morning, people said, but it was seen going up in flames in the mid morning. Police on duty in the nearby area rushed to the spot and poured water on the flag. Shahilabad police have booked a case. In the curfew-bound areas of

Madanapet and Saidabad, situation was under control but the authorities cancelled a 12-2 pm curfew relaxation announced today after the incidents in new areas. It is now said the police would go with extreme caution and

decide on curfew-relaxation after studying the situation till Friday. In-charge commissioner of police Anurag Sharma and an additional commissioner of police Amit Garg and other police officials went around to take

hile one part of the City suddenly kicked up unrest on Sunday, a power play was being staged at the police headquarters, it is learnt. All of a sudden, the Commissioner of Police A K Khan was relieved and a senior police officer Anurag Sharma was appointed in-charge commissioner by the police headquarters. Some 40 hours after this, Madanapet and Saidabad erupted in communal violence and the question cropped up, “where is Khan?” Interestingly, the query came from the Chief Minister’s Office, sources say. The CMO was apparently not updated about the goings-on in the police headquarters. Khan was supposed to go for a month-long training at the National Police Academy and later to Scotland Yard for a skill enhancement course. But evidently Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy was not in the know of things. Khan was immediately recalled and he toured the troubled areas. Postnoon’s bid to find out if Khan has the CMO’s leave to go for Scotland Yard

course brought out that nobody is sure of the sanction. As things stand today, Khan stands down and Sharma is up on the podium. Queries with police commissioner’s office revealed that the Director General of Police office has given him sanction to go to Scotland Yard. Was there a link between the sudden changes of police guard? Many middlerung officials Postnoon talked with say it was unwise to hurry a change without giving the incumbent a chance to know his challenges especially in a large metro like Hyderabad. They whisper the on-going cold war between the DGP camp and Khan. There were attempts to shift Khan and bring in someone close to the DGP camp but it did not succeed because he has the confidence of the CM and other district ministers. But, things seem to have changed and the training came as a convenient excuse for the detractors of Khan to move quickly. Subsequently the communal situation went out of control as Khan had been directing the City police force for over two years and he knows the communal equation well.

stock of the situation. The BJP that had a plan to impose a bandh on the City has later withdrawn. The police have so far booked 26 cases. The Special Investigation Team is probing into the violence.

ndhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) termed Sunday's communal incident as a conspiracy to defame Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is implementing many pro-minority programmes including handing over of Waqf lands and Muslim reservations. It has suggested that the CM should realize the move and take severe action against the people who are responsible for the communal incidents. APCC general secretary Abid Rasool Khan said that the communal incidents were pre-planned with the aim of tarnishing the secular harmony of Hyderabad and create a rift between the two major communities. He cited the recent visit of VHP leader Praveen Togadia for Hanuman Jayanthi procession and instigating speeches by local Hindu leader Raja Singh to support his argument. Khan also said that the visit of home minister Sabita Indira Reddy to curfew imposed areas is a confidence-building measure.

NEWS BRIEFS 681 SSC students debarred this year

The unplanned development and traffic snarls at Kukatpally are driving out people

s the SSC exams ended on Modnay, 20 students found themselves debarred on the last day. More than 12.5 lakh students appeared for the exams and a total of 681 students were debarred this year. In all, 265 invigilators were also relieved due to laxity in performing their duties and three were suspended from services, said Manmadha Reddy, director of Government Examinations.

etro rail and civic service providers together seem to have conspired to make Kukatpally a mororist’s nightmare. This area, once a peaceful corner of the City, has not an inch of space and over and above more than one agency is digging up the road, making the whole area a hell for everyone. Recently, the Metro rail department has started its work which is creating severe traffic problems for the residents. The digging up work takes places right in the middle of the road. “More often than not this is the reason for the traffic jams. It’s very frustrating and the pollution level has also gone up due to this. To avoid traffic I leave home by 7.30 am ever day. Even a minute late and I get stuck for the next two hours,” complains Shravant K, an IT professional. As if this was not enough the government has started digging up both sides of the road for sewerage work. “We already had so many problems with the traffic; the sewerage work has made the place a complete mess. Come rains this place is going to be a deathtrap. The government should step up and take some serious action and restrict construction in this area,” said Raj Das, working with a restaurant in the area. Construction is in full swing at Kukatpally. Several malls are coming up close on each others’ heels while shopping complexes and shops hardly provide parking space. Pedestrians also find this a challenging area to navigate. “The area is devoid of any walking space because of the constructions. Since they do not have parking facilities, the two and four wheelers are parked on the footpaths and main roads. As a result, pedestrians are forced

Mayor missing in action even as riots hit Absence of the first citizen from the scene of violence in the City has raised many eyebrows

GOVERNANCE Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

I

f there’s one question on most people’s minds, it’s “Where is the mayor?” While police top brass and political bigwigs visited the riot-hit areas the mayor who is supposed to be at the vanguard applying balm to the bruised psyche was conspicuous by his absence. The curiosity was more in this instance because the mayor’s party boss, MIM party floor leader in the Assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi and other party MLAs visited these areas and spoke to the victims at length when the riots broke out on Sunday; but Majid Hussain did not. Postnoon’s queries in this regard drew interesting inferences from GHMC leaders. Former deputy mayor of GHMC Jaffer Hussain Meraj said, “The mayor had skipped the visit as it would be construed as a move to sympathise with the minority community. It would worsen the situation.” Asked how they surmised this, Meraj said, “It is a sporadic incident. There is no need for the mayor to visit those areas. His

hile the YSR Congress party candidates are waiting to get back the seats that they have resigned, the Congress and the TDP camps are finding it difficult to convince the candidates for the coming by-polls. In some cases some Congress leaders are openly refusing to take the responsibility as election incharges. When it comes to TDP, the proposed candidates feel that they would lose whatever they have got, taking the Kovur example into account. The YSRC alleged that the ruling Congress and main opposition TDP were lobbying to delay the by-elections to save further humiliation. Former MLA Srikanth Reddy told Postnoon that the YSRC is prepared for the all elections. The election commission is of the opinion that the bypolls should be held before the presidential elections as nearly 10 per cent of the electoral college

visit might be seen in a different manner by the majority community. They would have thought the mayor had visited the spot only to express sympathy with Muslims. Hence he avoided it,” Meraj said. But some other senior leaders in the civic politics denied the mayor’s absence was not because of any directive from the higher-up. This was a decision arrived at locally. The mayor was not reachable for his comment on the issue. On the other hand, BJP corporator from Kurmaguda division Sahadev whose areas are under curfew alleged that the mayor did not visit the areas as he belonged to MIM and did not have any concern for the residents. “He belongs to MIM party. Why should he visit these areas?” he asked. Meanwhile, the mayor is said to be immersed in work and engagements. On Monday, he was busy with numerous meetings and other engagements. He met with a delegation of World Association of the Major Metropolises. The team consisted of secretary general of the Association Alain Saux and manager of Regional Asia Pacific office Mary Lewin. He also held a press conference on Monday to reveal the details. The congress will be held in 2014 and metros from across the world will participate.

ny domestic consumer using less than 100 units of power will not have any hike in tariff, said CM Kiran Kumar Reddy at a press conference on Monday. He said that AP was providing the highest subsidy on power. But given the severe financial crunch, there was no other alternative but to hike the power tariff, giving an exception to the poor. The subsidy component is more than 5,000 crore while the industries department is giving a cross subsidy of `50 crore, he added. The State will get an additional power of 500 megawatts soon from Simhadari. The demand for power has risen to a larger extent, the CM said. The gas rate has increased also by 93 per cent and supply has come down drastically. Nearly 254 million units of power is supplied every day while there are 243.6 lakhs connections in the State. Only 26 per cent of the consumers will be affected due to this fresh hike. In a bid to meet this crunch, they are also working towards harnessing wind energy. According to the CM 6,400 units of power is being generated by Hydel power.

from the State will be denied the opportunity to cast its vote if by-polls are delayed. On the other hand, with his Delhi trips, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy was trying to settle internal disputes and trying to get some funds to the State, to lure the voters. "Let the State government announce elections to panchayats, cooperatives, municipalities, Assembly or Parliament, we are prepared to face them and win now and in 2012 as well," Srikanth said with confidence. Brushing aside the rumours of Jagan's arrest, he said, “Why should he be arrested? Ultimately we will win in the people's court,” he asserted.

D

uring his recent Delhi visit, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has been told by the Congress high command that this time the Congress must make a comeback in the bypolls. The CM is going all out to woo the electorate. If the Congressdraws a blank like in the March bypolls, it could threaten the government’s numbers in the House; the CM’s gaddi too will be under threat. After a series of meetings with ministers, MPs and MLAs belonging to the bypoll constituencies at the camp office, the CM unveiled some sops for the areas. The civil supplies department was directed to immediately sanction 4 lakh LPG connections under Deepam

project for women belonging to BPL families. The officials have been instructed to prioritise the poll areas in implementing schemes, an official with the ministry of civil supplies told Postnoon. The CM also granted `5 crore each to the 18 constituencies to improve the power supply situation. An MLC who sat through the brain storming sessions of the CM said Kiran was leaving no stone unturned for getting results in the bypolls. The meeting also decided that drinking water

issues and borewell issues should be solved at the earliest. The CM has also directed the ministers to sanction mini-hydel projects for some of the areas to sort out power problems. On the other hand the TDP has launched its campaign from Tirumala while the YSRC is already in the fray with decided candidates and the odarpu yatra of Jagan Mohan Reddy. With chief election commissioner indicating that the bypolls will be held ahead of the presidential poll, the State officials have been instructed by the higher-ups to implement the schemes before the model code of conduct comes in to force. The CM cleared `48 crore worth projects and sent the same to the finance department for release of funds at the earliest. But even after these developments some Congress leaders still doubt if the party can match TDP and YSRC in spending.

trongly condemning the communal riots that erupted in some parts of the City, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy warned that mischief mongers, who resort to provocative acts, would be dealt with an iron hand. The CM said that severe action would be taken against the persons who were involved in the communal clashes and those who provoked them. He said that the DGP was instructed by the government to take the incident very seriously and make adequate security arrangements in the sensitive areas. Since the City is famous for communal harmony, he said, “We should strive to preserve peace and harmony in the State.”

Aviation University grounded Despite seven years of intense lobbying by three Chief Ministers and top bureaucrats, YSR’s pet project is yet to take off as at least three levels of clearances are pending at the Centre

EDUCATION U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com

A

t the recently-concluded International Civil Aviation Exhibition, industry leaders have been upbeat about the possible growth in the sector. However, the resurgence spurred by conducive market environment and government policies is struggling to maintain its momentum due shortage of skilled manpower. This is where the long-awaited Aviation University comes into the picture. It will provide courses and training in various disciplines required for the development of the industry. With its excellent infrastructure and comparatively low cost of living, the City is a natural candidate for becoming a major aviation hub. However, the plans are virtually in the hangar as there has been no movement for the last seven years beyond making announcements and writing letters to the PM. At the Begumpet Airshow, minister for civil aviation Ajit Singh said, “We are keen to set up world class training and education infrastructure for the aviation sector. To bridge the shortage of skilled personnel in aviation sector, we propose to set up a full-fledged university.” But little help has been coming from the Centre all this while.

Timeline July 1, 2005: CM YS Rajasekhar Reddy writes to the PM seeking inprinciple the approval for the Aviation University

June 18, 2008: Second letter from YSR to the PM requesting the same August 27, 2009: The CM writes to the PM again, this time proposing the name of NT Rama Rao for the University. As the Begumpet airport is closed for commercial operation the land should be allocated for setting up the university, CM suggested. Then chief secretary Ramakanth Reddy requested for sanction of 8,880 square metres of land at the old airport from the ministry of civil aviation for the construction of a new hangar for State government helicopters. Keeping in view of Zplus category security of the VVIPs and also the CM using the chopper on and off, the site on the southern side has been requested. Chief Minister K Rosaiah too

pursued the matter with the PM but could not get project cleared.

security clearance at the Union home ministry level is must.

Current status

Earlier Proposals

Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy is very keen on developing the space at Begumpet airport it is learnt. The CM took up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his recent Delhi visit. Though the Delhi air was thick with various political tensions, Kiran did not want to lose the opportunity to push for the long-pending project. Sources with the chief secretary’s office said that the matter was pending with the PMO and the progress of its movement was being actively tracked and pursued by the CM himself. Since the airport was used as the facility for VVIPs landing and takeoff,

Concordia University of Canada had decided to set up an aviationfocused university in India’s first aerospace special economic zone, which was supposed to come up in Hyderabad. The proposed International Civil Aviation University (ICAU) was to be developed as a centre of excellence with sister campuses in Montreal (Canada) and Toulouse (France). The foundation stone for the aerospace SEZ was laid at India Aviation-2008, India’s first conference on civil aviation. However, due to multiple pending clearances, the project has not taken off.

ICONIC CITY Osmania University

H

yderabad is a City that oozes history and heritage from every corner. So it comes as no surprise that the Osmania University, the premier university in Hyderabad, is a historical marvel in itself. The 1,600 acre spread houses numerous blocks and is one of the largest campuses in the country. The other big attraction about OU is that it has an extensive area of greenery and boasts of a wide variety of flora and fauna. If you’re lucky you could sight a peacock

Aishwarya Yerra Hyderabad as a City has a lot to offer in terms of heritage and sights. We take a look at the various places that make this City so special

early in the morning. The huge department blocks, especially the arts building, have been built in a great architectural style. The arts college is an immensely huge building and a heritage structure. The architecture of the building is such that it has a heavy Egyptian influence to it. Osmania University would be an ideal place for people interested in ancient buildings. It also serves as a perfect place to enjoy a quiet and peaceful evening in the lap of nature.

Civic initiative woefully lacking The recent communal violence brings out the paucity of civil initiatives in Hyderabad

he AP High Court has expressed its displeasure at the school education department for delay in issuing certificates to students of Bridge Schools. The judges were responding to a petition filed by Kavita, a student, who complained that the department was not issuing certificates to students. The judges also expressed anger at the public prosecutor attending the case on behalf of the government.

hat politics reminds us of is agitations, bandhs, strikes, dharnas and the occasional curfew. As the State lies in anticipation of the general elections in 2014, the political scenario in the City remains turbulent, what with one serious issue being replaced by another of greater magnitude. But what seem to be missing from this whole scene are active civil societies and their civic initiative. On the surface a vibrant civic initiative is missing in Hyderabad while civic problems galore riddle it. Active NGOs fulfil an important vacuum — the popular voice and needs. Jayaprakash Narayan, Lok Satta MLA and a popular figure in State and City politics, said, “The responsibility of an active civil society addressing political problems is to push the system into social reforms. This takes a considerable amount of knowledge and hard work like any other social issue but the degree of success involved is very low. NGOs addressing the broader issues such as governance and democracy are hard to find because there are slim chances of success and recognition while it is more attractive and easy to supplement a government’s work.” So is there perhaps hostility and weariness that a civil society would face given the extremities of regional politics? “Not hostile but weariness.

There is almost no active civil society in the country that has addressed political problems, not counting Team Anna. There could be umpteen number of reasons for this, from issues regarding mass mobilisation to sustenance etc. It is only natural for someone to be weary of a group of people that challenge and question authority,” he said. In the light of the recent communal violence in Old City, several prominent citizens from all walks of life had gathered to address the problem and its various political backdrops. This marks perhaps the beginning of awareness among the people to commonly fight and voice their

opinions independent of any political party or ideology. Help Hyderabad, for instance, is such an initiative. However, there is still a long way to go. “Towering figure like Loknayak JP is not around anymore to drive people to act. Not that the issue is personality driven, but personality plays a vital part among many in the absence of civil society network. Adding to this is the political parties’ attitude. With their own style of nepotism they do not welcome civil societies. Anything seen as an alternative will be always considered as a threat,” said Babu Gogineni, a prominent humanist and activist.

Christine Lazarus, a nominated MLA said, “People sit down at tea parties and wonder what went wrong with the world. It is exactly this school of thought that bogs down the progress or initiatives towards being politically active. I think there is a great need for teachers, lecturers to come out openly and preach the importance of being active politically, to speak about things. Also, the digital media has been diluted by political opinions when they should be an independent platform that addresses all issues political. This perhaps is the reason why people think politics is all about complaining about bad roads and no electricity etc.”

Jewellers return, bruised and fuming Evidently, they are more concerned about excise officials breathing down their necks than the hike in excise duty

he jewellers in the City have returned to their shops after a long spell of protests but none of them seems to know what he/she has gained. Almost all including the big players in precious metals are unclear about the finance minister’s assurance. What they all have is a word from Dinesh Jain, director of the All-India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation's governing body that the FM would consider the request to withdraw excise duty announced in the budget. “Well, ‘consider’ is a flexible

word,” remarked a jeweler pithily. They are nevertheless happy the debilitating 3-week-long strike ended and lakhs of workers are back on job. “The finance minister has assured us that whatever best is possible will be done and the decision on roll back has to be taken in the next Parliament session. However, he had assured us that there will be no trouble from the excise department in our trade transactions. We need to wait for the final decision from him,” said, Praveen Kumar, general secretary, and Twin City Jewellers Association. Ahmed Mokhtiyar, owner of Mohammed Khan Jewellers, said, “I have suffered huge losses as a result of the 21 day strike. The daily loss of business is `2-3 lakh.

There is no planned marketing strategy as we still are not confident about the finance minister’s response. There is no written assurance and for the final outcome we need to wait till the next Parliament session. We had no choice but to trust his assurance and I finally opened my shop on Saturday.” The traders in the City have clarified that the strike is only being suspended and they would go on a strike again if the finance minister fails to keep his word. “The strike has been suspended till the first week of May as Pranab Mukherjee had promised us that the final decision on rollback of excise duty and customs duty will be taken in May first week during the Parliament session,” said Deepak Kumar, of

Suraj Bhan Jewellers. “We will trust him for the time being. We hope he will keep his word an not disappoint us. We have already suffered huge losses in terms of business and time and nothing can make good these losses. But I am happy that my customers are coming back and I am getting orders but it will take a long time to recover the losses we have incurred,” said, Rama Rao of Shri Krishna Jewellers. Jewellers across the country have been striking since the union budget proposed a one per cent excise duty on unbranded jewellery and doubled the import duty to 4 per cent on gold. Jewellers were protesting against the hikes since March 17 and it went on till April 7.

our stylist opens an entire kit of different scissors lined in a genuine leather bag, your hair is sprayed with fresh water, a soft vinyl cape draped around you, an electric trimmer to keep your skin smooth, at the end of the haircut, your face wiped with a hot towel while you enjoy the airconditioned and plush interiors — this is a typical scene in a high-end salon and people pay a huge sums to avail this service. While this is what most of the upcoming salons offer, not everybody can afford to pay a few hundreds to pamper themselves. For most others, they still get a fairly decent haircut under trees. Yes,

there are still barbers under the trees who make getting a haircut extremely affordable, especially in times of economic slowdown. Come rain or shine, these barbers sit under the shades of trees and you can get a haircut for as little as `20. For children, they charge `15. Of course, you neither have a chair to sit nor a fan to cool you down, and sometimes the hygiene goes for a toss. What you get instead is a cheap, reasonable haircut good enough to get you by. Of course, these barbers know about the latest hairstyles — whether it is Shah Rukh’s cut in Don 2 or Hrithik Roshan’s in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. A few of them even have posters, which act like a hairstyle catalogue. You come here, sit on a square

cane mat, and the scissors go snip snip. “We are surviving in times where new salons are opening every other week. We have loyal customers because we are affordable,” said N Ramakrishna, a barber under who sets shop every day opposite Hockey Grounds in Masab Tank. His partner Kruthik Verma, who came to the city 25 years ago, said, “We can’t afford a roof over our head for our business. Yet, we do our duty faithfully and don’t give our customers reason to complain.” Spotting these barbers might be a task considering salons rule the roost, but if you do, you will admire their hard work. Here is saluting the people who make the City an affordable place to live in.

But, soon she recovered from the hard time and started Hyma Plates and Vessels (HPV), a wielding and industrial equipment manufacturing company, in her name in 1989. Talking about the initial investments, she said, “The business was started with `10,000 in 1989 by me and my husband (GNB Chowdary). That was the money, my father deposited on my name during marriage. My husband is an expert in the field of mechanical engineering with double polytechnic. It is his expertise with my managerial skills helped to build the firm.” Hyma Plates and Vessels availed `2.5 lakh loan from a bank. “Even after started the company, I used to work for ICRISAT as senior electronic associate. Ban to ‘hang out’ at Google social network SAN

FRANCISCO: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to take part in a public video chat “hangout” at Google’s social network on Tuesday with young people from around the world. The Google+ Hangout will begin at 7.30pm GMT and be streamed live online at youtube.com/unitednations, Google spokesman Dex Torricke-Barton said in a blog post. “Voices of the next generation will have the chance to participate in an exclusive global conversation with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon via a Google+ Hangout from the United Nations headquarters,” Torricke-Barton said. Youths from Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and the US will be able to “ask questions on issues that matter to them,” in a session moderated by Google chief legal officer David Drummond.

Durga Rani, MD, Hyma Plates and Vessels expand the company.” Delivery and perfect quotation are crucial for the growth of any industrial equipment manufacturing company. She says, “The company can have 15 per cent margins with the perfect quotation and timely delivery. If it is wrongly quoted, the company has to spend money from its pocket and get the work done. If

HPV had also faced serious challenges in the growth phase. Some employees used to take frequent offs making the work suffer and making the company unable to meet deadlines. The company has overcome the problem with new policies. She says, “We put a bonus of 10 per cent for employees who have full attendance in a month and another five per cent for continuous attendance for six months.” HPV had marked the turnover of `1 crore in the financial year 2009-2010. However, the company’s turnover came down to `50 lakh and `70 lakh in 2010-2011 and in 2011-2012 respectively due to political agitations and power crisis.

Talking about agitations and power crisis, she said, “The employees were unable to come due to lack of transport, even if they managed to come, the company used to get closed by the mob. All the deliveries were unable to reach clients before the deadline due to these issues. The company at times paid fines to clients as it could not commit to the deadlines. It also ended up paying salaries and bills without production. Power cuts also affected us immensely. Machines worth `3 lakh got spoiled due to the fluctuations.” The company had developed various products like stainless steel reactors, evaporators, storage tanks according to the client requirements. It has clients that include major brands like Aurobindo Pharma, Shanta BioTech, Divis Labs and PSU clients such as like ECIL and Department of Atomic Energy. Talking about the future plans, she says, “There is no dearth of orders for us, if there are continuous and quality power and peace in the state, we will take the company to new heights. We are aiming to reach `2 crore turnover this fiscal with new alliances.”

Facebook buys Instagram photo app SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook on Monday announced a billion-dollar-deal to buy the startup behind wildly popular smartphone photo sharing application Instagram. The big ticket purchase was seen by some as a move by Facebook to strengthen defenses against Google and blazingly hot newcomer Pinterest in the weeks ahead of what promises to be a history-making stock market debut. “For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends

and family,” Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said while announcing the deal. An Instagram application tuned to Apple’s iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices has been downloaded more than 30 million times since the first version was released in late 2010 by the San Francisco startup. A version of the application tailored for smartphones power by Googlebacked Android software racked up more than a million users in the 24 hours after its release last week. AFP

AOL to sell 800 patents to Microsoft for $1 bn NEW YORK: AOL announced Monday it would sell more than 800 patents to Microsoft and license more than 300 additional patents and patent applications for $1.056 billion in cash. AOL, the troubled Internet pioneer, said the deal “unlocks value for shareholders and enables AOL to aggressively execute on our strategy to continue to create long-term shareholder value.”

AOL said that after the deal is complete, it will continue to hold “a significant patent portfolio of over 300 patents and patent applications spanning core and strategic technologies, including advertising, search, content generation/management, social networking, mapping, multimedia/streaming, and security among others.” AOL also received a license to the patents being sold to

Microsoft. The patent sale includes stock in an AOL subsidiary on which AOL expects to record a loss for tax purposes and as a result, AOL will offset most taxes in the deal. The company said it intends “to return a significant portion of the sale proceeds to shareholders and will determine the most efficient and effective method to do so prior to the closing of the transaction.” AFP

India unveiled

Goa to have register for ‘bad babus’

PANAJI: In a bid to weed out corruption, Goa government will now maintain a list of tainted officials and keep them away from sensitive departments if they fail to improve their conduct over a period of time. State Vigilance Department has issued a circular to all the Heads of Departments (HoDs) to prepare a list of the officers having “doubtful integrity” and the ones who might have been involved in corrupt practices. Similar lists naming points or places of corruption, unscrupulous contractors, supplies or firms and that of unscrupulous contact persons (who might facilitate corruption), will also be maintained. Superintendent of Police (Anti-Corruption) Bosco George said that there was a lot of information available with various departments of the government which can be used to provide “clean and efficient” administration.

The vigilance department will conduct an annual review and name of the officer can be dropped from the list, if he is found to have improved his conduct over a period of time. “It’s an entire exercise to give corruption-free governance,” George said, adding that those officers whose names figure in the list will be kept away from sensitive departments. Vigilance department has told all the HoDs that the list will be confidential and they will be responsible for its safe custody and it is their duty to ensure that the contents of the list are not leaked. A senior officer said that the circular in this regard was earlier issued during 2005 when Manohar Parrikar was chief minister before he was dislodged in a political coup. The circular remained buried in the files during the successive Congress-led governments. IANS

‘Others’ ask for votes Eunuchs tell Delhi to vote for the ‘other’ candidate

NEW DELHI: Chandni, 27, braces for an early start to the day at 9am. After a quick breakfast of tea and snacks, the eunuch from the Nangloi area steps out of her one-room office to greet around 50 supporters, including men and women. She is a candidate for the Delhi civic polls. With a subtle smile on her face, Chandni talks to her aide about the plan for the day and the neighbourhoods to campaign in Pratap Vihar - ward no 33 in outer Delhi. Chandni, addressed as a ‘hijra’ by locals, is among the few eunuch candidates contesting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections for the first time. Ballots will be cast for 272 wards of the trifurcated MCD April 15. Close to 10 million voters will be eligible to cast the ballot. This independent candidate belonging to the so-called third sex stands strong with her poll mantra Nar dekha, naari dekhi, Is baar kinnar ki baari. (You’ve voted for men and women, this time vote for a transgender)”. “The first thing I tell people is that I am a ‘kinnar’ (transgender). My gender speaks for my identity and will to bring change in the administration,” a confident Chandni told IANS. It was in 2009 that eunuchs were allowed to enrol themselves and contest the MCD elections as ‘others’ instead of male or female. The move enabled the community to be part of the socio-political stage.

Her election symbol is the kite, which stands for attaining height and freedom, Chandni says. While issues like poor sanitation, drinking water supply and proper roads remain the focus of her poll promises, there have been many hiccups in the journey so far. “People of the area know me well, so they do not oppose my presence. I am not so educated, but I am connected to the grassroots and it has helped me know the problems of Pratap Vihar and its residents,” Chandni said. “But there are times when men tear off flags and posters, pass lewd remarks against me and my supporters. It makes me feel that somehow kinnars are not socially acceptable,” Chandni told IANS. Even as obstacles loom and questions remain, activists say

the participation of eunuchs reflects a ‘huge shift in attitude’.

New blood NEW DELHI: He has a masters in surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons - not someone you’d expect as a candidate in the Delhi civic polls. But Sambit Patra is one of the new breed of intelligent, young professionals who have jumped into the political fray with “change” as his agenda. He is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Kashmere Gate. “Whenever my family used to sit down for lunch or dinner, we would discuss how the country’s political system is decaying. So this time, I decided to stop talking and start doing,” Patra, 37, told IANS.

FB, texts, BBM create generation divide NEW DELHI: The psychological gap between the Facebook generation of young employees and their baby booming boss is widening in the age of electronics, says Australian body language guru Allan Pease, who has co-authored 15 bestsellers with wife Barbara. “What happens is most of the Generation Y employees at workplaces are under 32. They are the techno-savvy Facebook generation who know more than their parents. Their bosses are baby boomers — 45 and above. That has created different perceptions of the world between the older generation and young workers,” Pease told IANS in the capital. The body language honcho, whose best-sellers like The Definitive Book of Body Language, Why Men Want Sex and Women Need Love and Why Men Lie and Women Cry have sold 25 million copies in 51 languages, was in the capital to address a select group on the importance of body language, lifestyle trends and his

books, which are distributed in India by Manjul Publishing House. Pease and his wife Barbara, who work out of UK and Australia, appear on the global media regularly and their work has been made into a television series. Exploring the workplace psyche of older bosses, Pease said, “They perceive that the employee will work hard, remain loyal, tell the truth and will remain with the company till he retires.” “Generation Y thinks that is stupid stuff and wants to change job every three years.” The body language of the two generations of professionals is also a world apart, the he said. “At the coffee shop of the hotel where I was staying (in Delhi), I saw six people on the table besides mine - four were in their 20s and two in their 40s, a man and his wife. They probably owned a company and the youngsters were employees armed with Blackberrys. The four young people were SMSing across the table

to send messages to each other. The employees were not looking at each other while they were sending messages,” Pease, who is in his 60s, said. “The older couple was appalled that they were not attracting attention,” the body language instructor said. Pease said the cardinal body

language rule at the work place is to “switch off the mobile phone while in a meeting or put it on the silent mode”. “But my 28-year-old son does it (messages on his mobile phone) all the time, especially when his mother is talking to him. It is typical of the generation. When they talk to the baby boomers (45 plus),

they can’t keep eye contact,” he said. Pease observed that the “Generation Y brains are being rewired by the electronic media”. “Most of them are most likely to get a job because they don’t have a body language (and they cannot talk). Body language makes 60 per cent to 80 per cent of impact between people, but electronics is cutting the younger ones away from their immediate surroundings,” Pease said. The body language guru said “the dependence on electronic gadgets was a very alarming trend for youngsters which made meeting and recognising partners (mates) difficult and where they should stay away”. “A woman in her 50s knows who is sending signals to her around in a room, but a 25-yearold (whose uses the mobile phone and SMS for communication) is less aware of it. We have never been good at body language,” he said. IANS

Communal politics goes viral

NATION AT A GLANCE Father kills infant daughter with nicotine

BRP Bhaskar

BHOPAL: In another instance of desperation for a son, a father has been arrested in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior town for killing his two-day-old daughter by feeding her nicotine, police said Tuesday. Narendra Rana, 40, was arrested Monday from his residence at Murar in Gwalior, about 400 km from here, six months after he killed his daughter, an official said. Rana's wife Anita had delivered a girl child Oct 17 last year at a private hospital. The infant was found dead two days later. The post-mortem report, handed to police only last month, revealed that the baby had died due to the consumption of nicotine.

T

he communal genii whose support the Congress invoked to oust Kerala's first Communist government more than 50 years ago are still around and turning the state's politics viral. Across the fractured polity there is animated discussion on how the decision of the Indian Union Muslim League, the second largest constituent of the Congress-led United Democratic Front, to press its year-old demand for an additional ministerial berth will affect the communal balance. The third largest UDF constituent, the Kerala Congress (Mani), a camouflaged Christian formation with a Nair sprinkle, supports the League demand. However, several prominent Congressmen as well as leaders of the Communist Party of IndiaMarxist, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Nair Service Society of the forward Nair community and Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam of the backward Ezhava community have said raising League representation in the government will upset the communal balance. While forming the government after the UDF scraped through with a 72-68 majority in the 140-member assembly in last year's elections, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy offered the League four ministerial berths, as in his previous government. However, League president Hyderali Shihab

Thangal named Manjalamkuzhi Ali as the party's fifth minister. Last week he demanded that Ali must be sworn in along with Anoop Jacob of the Kerala Congress (Jacob), who won the Piravam by-election and is waiting to take his late father's place in the council of ministers. Unable to resist the League's pressure, the chief minister has tossed the problem into the high command's lap. He has also reportedly proposed that the League be offered assembly speakership, now held by a Congressman, in lieu of fifth ministership. The League's stubbornness and the Kerala Congress's support to it are manifestations of growing communal assertiveness, origins of which can be traced to the 'liberation struggle' of 1959 which gave the Centre the pretext to dismiss the Communist ministry. The prime movers behind the agitation were the Church, which was infuriated by the government's attempt to curb

exploitation of teachers by private managements, a majority of which are under different Christian denominations, and the NSS, which resented dismantling of the feudal system of land ownership dominated by Hindu forward castes. The Praja Socialist Party and the Indian Union Muslim League, which had influence among Muslims of the Malabar region, made common cause with the Congress.

In the elections that followed the government's ouster the three parties together worsted the Communists. Averse to accommodating the successor of the pre-Partition Muslim League in the Cabinet, the Congress placated it with the Speakership. After the Congress ended its ties with the League, the CPI-M stepped in. As its ally, the League got two Cabinet berths. That helped it earn political respectability. Playing his cards well in the days of political uncertainty, CH Mohammed Koya, leader of the 13-member League legislature party, became chief minister in 1979. However, the government lasted only 50 days. The Kerala Congress was formed by a group of Christian and Nair legislators who revolted against backward class chief minister R Sankar and walked out of the Congress in 1964. It has undergone many splits and mergers, but its caste/religious composition remains unchanged. IANS

Education brings hope to villages Durba Ghosh

MOHURAMUKH (ASSAM): The Right to Education Act has brought cheers into the miserable lives of villagers living on the banks of the Brahmaputra in Assam's Golaghat district who are under constant threat of flood and land erosion. Education and economic empowerment are the latest buzzwords in the villages, courtesy the landmark law, dotting the south bank of the river and inhabited predominantly by Mishing tribals in the Bokakhat sub-division of the district. A project has been undertaken to provide access to quality education to children of the Mishing community, the coordinator of the project for Golaghat district, Gautam Dutta, said. Stating that education is the biggest casualty of the twin

problems of flood and land erosion in the area, Dutta said the project had been undertaken by an NGO, North East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS) in collaboration with the Aide-et-Action (Inter-

national) in 28 villages. "The primary aim of the project is to understand, document and teach learning process to Mishing children and to advocate and influence policy decisions in alignment with

theRight to Education Act," he said. Dutta believes that the implementation of the project would lead to improvement in educational opportunities and quality of education. Dutta further pointed out that another major focus of the project is to improve capacities of women and children in general and girl children, in particular, to advocate for their right to education and development. "Before starting our work, it was necessary to know the competitiveness of the children in the 3 R's — Reading, Writing and Arithmetic and a Children Competitiveness Assessment was conducted to prepare the future action plan," he said.An initiative has also been taken to set up thirty 'Sishu Manchas' in the project area where the children are being taught extra-curricular activities.

"The two constables, Deepak, 35, and Amit, 30, who were on night patrol on a motorcycle were knocked down from behind. Karuna slams Lanka for raking up Kudankulam CHENNAI: DMK President M Karunanidhi today slammed Sri Lanka for raking up the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project issue, saying India "will do what is required." The Kudankulam project was not something new and had been started many years ago and work on it is currently in progress, he said, adding it cannot be "accepted if they rake up the issue now." "Indian government will do what is required," he told reporters at his residence before leaving for the assembly to sign the MLA's register. His remarks came a day after Colombo voiced concern over the possible impact of radiation from India's nuclear power plants in the southern region, as it prepares to raise the issue with global atomic watchdog IAEA.

Antony dismisses tank ammo ‘rumours’ NEW DELHI: Dismissing as “rumours” reports about shortage of certain tank ammunition that appeared in the media in the last one week, defence minister AK Antony today said there will always be “shortcomings” but the country was in a much stronger position as compared to the past. “These are all rumours. I can assure you that the country is fully prepared. India is in much more strong position as compared to the past. “There will always be some shortcomings and that is also in the process. We can’t expect 100 per cent requirements to be fulfilled and also that entire force is not on the front. They are all spread over,” he told reporters here.

Beyond Borders

All roads lead to Australia America still beckons with promises of high-paying jobs and opportunity, but Australia is growing rapidly as a destination of choice

Remembering a consummate newsman

Freya Petersen

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA: Despite three very good reasons not to leave his homeland, Kevin Dwyer swapped the economic — and literal — gloom of Ireland for the sunny climes of Australia. He said financial desperation forced him to part with his partner and two children last October, and travel for an indefinite period to a place where he believed the streets were lined with gold. Dwyer is part of a modern wave of economic migrants driven from Europe — and from Ireland in particular — by rising rates of unemployment. America still beckons with promises of high-paying jobs and opportunity, but Australia is growing rapidly as a destination of choice. In particular, an influx of Irish immigrants has arrived. While not all Australians are welcoming them, most say the immigrants are a boon to the country — especially the Irish, many of whom have found a place in the work force aiding the construction

boom. The numbers are conflicting, as is often the case when illegal immigration is involved. But they speak for themselves. According to official figures from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship figures reveal a 68 percent jump in the number of visas granted to Irish workers in the past year — 3095 arrived in 2011, up from 1840 during the corresponding period in 2010. That might

not sound like a big number, but adjusting for population it's equivalent to about 45,000 immigrants in US — roughly the size America's fourth biggest immigration group, the Filippinos. Others see a far bigger influx. A widely cited Economic and Social Research Institute study from 2010 found that 24,000 Irish emigrants had headed to Australia, oustripping those bound for the UK and the US.

WASHINGTON: Mike Wallace (above), a legendary newsman known for impertinent, hard-nosed interviews on CBS' popular 60 Minutes television program, has died at age 93, the network announced on Sunday. Wallace, whose 60-year career began in radio, spanning roles from wrestling announcer to quiz show host before making an indelible mark on US television journalism as an interviewer of the news makers who defined his times. From Malcolm X to Ayatollah Khomeini, Wallace cut to the quick with tough, abrasive, "who-gives-a-damn" questions that proved ground-breaking in US television journalism. He honed his cocky, pit bull persona in an interview show called Night Beat, from 1955-57, and then brought it to 60 Minutes when CBS launched that seminal television magazine show in 1968. Wallace, who retired in 2006 racked up at least 20 Emmy awards, along with every other major prize for television journalism. Some of his work, however, also came in for criticism. He and CBS were sued for libel by General William Westmoreland, a Vietnam War commander, for a 1982 documentary The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception. The suit was later dropped after CBS issued a statement saying it had not meant to question the general's patriotism. He also was accused of buckling to corporate pressure to kill a story about a tobacco company whistleblower, which later became the basis of a 1999 movie The Insider.

5 QUESTIONS WITH JAVIER SOLANA, FORMER SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU The EU is in a particularly challenging moment. Is it a crisis, a turning point, or how would you characterize the moment? The outcome of this crisis really has two possibilities. It is a kind of fracturing. Or it is a further integration. How does the EU get through this, and how does it return to growth? The only way out is through more and deeper integration. The return to growth, well, that is a harder question and one that would take a lot of time. The return to growth is going to be a big challenge. Can we focus on Spain specifically since

this is your country? There is 25 per cent unemployment there now. How do you possibly turn the corner to growth with that high an unemployment rate? Well, first of all some context. What is considered ‘full employment’ in Spain is always at about an eight per cent. That is because of the nature of the jobs in tourism and in construction, which are temporal and seasonal and fluid. There is a lot of fluidity in the job market and that has always been true. But 25 per cent is too much. We risk losing a generation here. A big consideration in this is the fact that Spain has had a dramatic increase in immigration during

the last 10 to 15 years. The labour unions in Spain and across Europe seem weaker than ever... First of all, yes, labor is weak. True. The working class is disappearing. The big factories that were the basis of the power of the unions no longer exist. The EU’s economic instability seems to undercut its diplomatic authority in terms of global affairs... The problems existed before the crisis and will continue to after the crisis. The EU continues to be an important player. Charles M Sennott

making changes to flight paths to avoid a North Korean rocket launch. Philippine Airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have announced changes to several routes. Pyongyang says the rocket, to be launched between 12 to 16 April, will put a satellite into orbit. Philippine Airlines said in a statement that as the splashdown area of the rocket’s second stage was anticipated to be ‘’just east of Luzon’’, all flights passing through the area during the launch period would have their routes adjusted. These include about a dozen flights between Manila and the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Philippine officials have also declared a no-fly zone and warned ships and fishing boats to avoid the area where rocket debris could fall, said an Associated Press report. In a notice posted on its website, JAL said that the flight paths of four flights between Tokyo and Manila, Jakarta and Singapore would be adjusted, leading to an increase in flying time by five to 20 minutes. Its domestic flights have not been affected and the airline has also made provisions for passengers booked on the affected flights to change their reservations. ANA announced changes to the flight paths of five flights between Tokyo and Singapore, Manila and Jakarta, but said that flight schedules will not be affected.

WASHINGTON: Bobby Jindal and Nikky Haley are emerging as possible vicepresidential running mate of Mitt Romney, who is expected to bag the Republican Party’s nomination for presidential polls. However both Jindal, the Governor of Louisiana, and Haley, the Governor of South Carolina, have repeatedly denied that they are in the race for being considered as the vice- presidential running mate for Romney, who is now almost all set to bag the party’s ticket to challenge incumbent President Barack Obama in the November presidential elections. In its list of 10 possible running mates of Romney, CBS News – a major American media outlet – named both Jindal and Haley. In an interview to the news channel, top Republican Senator, John McCain, said likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney should consider Jindal. “There are a number of candidates we have out there, Bobby Jindal. Obviously Marco Rubio is in the top tier, Chris Christie,” McCain said. “Two-term governor of Louisiana is considered a rising star within the Republican Party. The son of Indian immigrants, Jindal campaigned during his first campaign to be governor on rooting out

Jindal campaign t-shirt political corruption and turning around a state budget heading to financial crisis. He reduced the deficit through spending cuts that includes reducing state employee pensions,” CBS News said. The first Indian-American to serve as Governor, Jindal endorsed Rick Perry, the governor of neighbouring state of Texas, early in the campaign and has remained neutral since Perry dropped out. Currently the youngest governor in the country and the first Indian-American woman to run a state, Haley garnered national attention during her campaign and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin endorsed her, it added. Haley endorsed Mitt Romney before

her state’s primary in January but said she is not interested in serving as Romney’s running mate, the news channel added. “There are a number of candidates we have out there. Bobby Jindal. Mitch Daniels. We have a wealth of talent out there, and I’m sure that Mitt will make the right choice. Obviously, it’s a touch decision,” McCain said. Four years ago Jindal was considered as a running mate of McCain. In an interview to local WWL channel, Louisiana State University SU Political Science Professor Robert Hogan said he wouldn’t be surprised if Romney considered Jindal to help attract more conservatives. Jindal has the conservative credentials that many republicans are looking for, he added. “His desire to make certain that taxes of any sort have not been imposed, the fact that he is very successfully attempting to change education,” Hogan told the news channel. Politico also named both Jindal and Haley among possible vice presidential nominee. But both the Indian Americans are missing from the list of Roll Coll, a newspaper on the Capitol Hill. PTI

Editorials MILITARY DRAMA presents sad scene

God and a great moral

A

dding more drama to the ammunition shortage controversy, Defence minister AK Antony has said that all such reports are mere rumours. The minister’s statement is in direct contradiction of what vice-chief of Army General SK Singh had apprised the Standing Committee of Defence on Monday. The government has not yet been able to clear the air regarding the quality of Tatra vehicles. The government’s reaction to the recent controversies that has arisen regarding the armed forces has been knee-jerk rather than calculated in terms of national interests. The leak of Army chief General VK Singh’s letter to the prime minister has brought to fore the dismal state of affairs in the armed forces and the hype surrounding the rumours of a coup shows strains emerging in the civilianmilitary relationships. While those clad in khadi and camouflage slug it out it out over various counts, the country’s enemies are having a field day. One can’t help but recall the proverb: United we stand, divided we fall.

t’s a funny thing. Almost all mainstream religions and religious-minded glorify the afterlife and vouch for hell and heavens, but don’t really believe it. If they did they would not go hurting fellow beings and amass wealth they can’t take to anywhere beyond the planet. The recent violence in the City that caused injuries to many and loss of property to dozens made me think. Is our life for living or for fighting? What do we fight for? Alexander conquered the world, Napoleon did the same, most of our kings and emperors spent their whole life fighting. At the end where are they? Lack of philosophy in life makes one drift. Drifting flotsams become easy fodder for crafty ministers of religions and rituals. It is sad that everything in this country is weighed on the scale of party politics which is sick to the core. What is the electoral gain or monetary gain for me is the question ruling in leaders’ minds. While the fact remains that faith is basically personal, institutionalising it has resulted in much injury to human race for ages. Shouldn’t we make appropriate amends to our beliefs and rituals according to the changing times? Endless processions India has all the religions in the world. No country on Earth can claim such a plurality as India does. And, among the major religions — Hindu-Muslim-Christian — alone have 30 sects and Hindus have 300 sub-sects. Aside from this, there are 12 or more birth anniversaries of leaders past. Thus it becomes clear that we will have 1 ‘holy day’ throughout the year. If we begin to take to the street on every occasion, we will have 365 days of processions of one kind or another. When do we work? When do we earn? When do we live and love? Where do we drive or walk? What of the millions of business people, big and small, who must earn their bread? That massive rallies through narrow old city streets, whether it is in Lucknow or Ahmedabad or Hyderabad, have been the major cause of trouble all these years is a fact. After every trouble we dress the wound and get out again, repeating the same folly. Secularism is equal respect to all faiths or indifference to religious faiths. In a country with endless social mosaics, is it not time we banned processions on public roads? The judiciary has pronounced bandh as unconstitu-

Unfair criticism of TTD

Water loot

With reference to the article published on April 7 ‘Let India’s poor partake in god’s goldrush too’, I suggest your team research properly before pointing fingers. TTD runs a super specialty hospital, an artificial limb fitting centre and several other schemes like performing mass weddings for poor. They fund drinking water schemes and even are taking care of roads in Tirupati. You should appreciate what TTD is doing and provide suggestions for improvement, rather than pointing fingers at the short comings.

This is utterly shameful. What have these people been doing for the last eight years? They are complaining now that their borewells have gone dry. What is wrong with these people? Why this lethargy and lack of unity in the face of such blatant exploitation and thuggery? I pity them, but do not feel sorry for them.

tional; why not discontinue religious processions along streets? Each procession, we all know, is not a sign of devotion but a show of strength — either political or social. Devotion is a matter involving mind or heart, not physical. Tailend: A hotel in Coimbatore run by a Palakkad Patter (Brahmin) came out with a brilliant business idea. His customers comprised, in almost equal proportion, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. So he put up a signage of aum, a cross and a crescent moon and star behind his cash counter and lit an agarbatti every morning. Patter had no inkling of the trouble he was courting. First, a testy Muslim customer asked if the Patter believed in all, why is his fare only vegetarian? Didn’t he know meat and fish are mainstay in the menu of Christians and

Muslims? Patter was aghast. He stuttered, “What! How can I?” The customer insisted that the cross and crescent be removed. Patter but persisted. Then came a day when a dozen or more Jains got posted to the city and became his customers. One of them told Patter to keep a photo of Mahaveer. The hotelier gladly obliged, then came Buddhists, and Buddha got added, Sikhs came in and Guru Gobind Singh joined in and slowly many Babas followed suit. There came a day when the gallery was full and the wall protested. Unable to bear any longer, Patter did the only thing possible. He removed all and put up a mirror instead. Trouble subsided. Everywhere peace, because looking at one’s own reflection, no customer could become angry or testy. PK Surendran works for Postnoon.

emember, there won’t be a lesson in school about how to manage your time, it’s a skill that needs to be acquired from within. Most professionals these days work through tight deadlines, meetings, conferences and at the same time manage family, friends and personal life. In today’s workplace, what sets you apart from the rest is your ability to handle information, organise it and then manage your time. A lot of careers are made and broken by the soft skills that you possess and which help you in managing excess workload. Rahul Reddy, a marketing specialist at CtrlS believes that managing your time at work despite distractions is quite essential. “The only way I do it is spend a little more time on planning than executing something just randomly. Prioritising your tasks is the key to fulfilling and completing most deadlines. It’s when you organise your daily work that you necessarily don’t feel the pressure and can keep your cool,” he advises adding that he enjoys working and it’s because of planning that his deadlines look easier. If you work closer to deadlines, you may also not be able to deliver your best, therefore planning and executing both go hand in hand. But Rishi Khaitan, an MBA from the Schulich School of Business in Toronto is of the opinion that it is more about loving your work then you wouldn’t have to worry about managing time. Goals , targets and deadlines are a way of keeping the workers of a company involved at all time without having something else on mind. Some companies offer incentives apart from their salaries to keep them motivated and goal oriented. In other words these companies pay one extra not to be distracted. Having a clear thought and motivation has to come from within. The driving force is the only thing that can be provided. To be distracted at a workplace would prove to be a minus point on an employee’s track record. Provision of the right work environment is mandatory for the employees to give their 100 per cent attention. A fun work environment, needed breaks and other such motivating factors also play a vital role in concentration. Apart from all the above ideas that a company can do for their employees they can also have restricted Internet access. Honey boosts immunity WELLINGTON: Paving the way for a range of new wound-healing products, researchers have identified key compounds in honey that boosts the immune system. The ground-breaking research, carried out at Industrial Research Ltd (IRL), Plant & Food Research and Massey University, found that different varieties of New Zealand honey appear to trigger different immune responses. IRL’s role was to provide its world-class expertise in the extraction, analysis, and purification of complex molecules that play an important role in biological systems, the journal Food Chemistry reports.

Don’t force them to quit Suvarna Bhambure suvarna.b@postnoon.com

D

iscovering that someone close to you is addicted to drugs is no joke. But understanding why an individual uses drugs and eventually gets addicted to it is the hardest of all. Addiction, or substance abuse, can be described as the need to repeatedly use a substance that alters consciousness. While it might be hard for bystanders to accept that their loved one is an addict, it’s absolutely not an easy task for a drug addict to quit. Definitely not! The amount of cacophony in the mind of an addict is unbelievable from the moment they decide to quit. Doling out advise might be easy for a non-addict, but try looking at it from an addict’s perspective. Having to give up something that might seem like a lifeline is hard — but not impossible. Besides, do we even know enough about the subject to ask them to stop? Drug addiction can happen to anyone. From professionals working the corporate ladder, call centre employees, students in high-pressure professional courses, an attractive woman next to you in a lounge to the sweet kid next door — they are all around you. A drug addict is not necessarily one of those party animals, with “loose morals” as has been popularised by cinema. They are simply regular people like us who

Signs to watch out for

T

he physical manifestations of substance dependencies vary according to the drug that is abused, but there are general symptoms that most drug addicts exhibit when their use of a substance has risen to a dangerous level. These include: n Disruption of routine (ie no want to do nothing more than smoothen life’s little issues — do a better job, appear more cheerful, stay awake longer and feel more relaxed. Besides, drugs have become relatively easy to procure these days, what with easy availability and a higher spending power. So be it a laptop and smartphone toting techie in a metro living life on the fast track or a

longer on time for work, school, appointments) n Violent mood swings n Frequent isolation or trips to an isolated place like the bathroom, basement or bedroom n Irregular sleeping patterns n Irregular appetite or excessive weight loss small town youngster with starry dreams, the conventional understanding of who does drugs is being turned on its head as substance abuse becomes a part of everyday life. While most college-goers and young professionals start of with “harmless” weed, it doesn’t take long for them to graduate to synthetic drugs like LSD, ecstasy and other more expen-

sive and hard to get designer drugs. Once hooked, the vicious cycle begins — lying to loved ones, stealing to buy drugs, an urge to administer drug and basically turning a blind eye to the repercussions. All said and done, pushing an addict to quit is probably the last thing one should do. It never works. Forcing or threatening them will only push them away further. What we need to understand is that nothing concrete can be done unless the addict himself/ herself accepts the situation and works up the will and courage to say no to drugs. It has to come from within them. All we can do as bystanders is be patient. Once the addict expresses the will to quit, help them with the tools to get rid of the habit. But remember that it is easy for someone to go right back to drugs while staying clean is extremely difficult. Patience is the only thing that works and trust me it can run out.

Rehabilitation Drug addiction is not a permanent state. It is possible to get help even for the most severe form of addiction. Rehabilitation centers, support groups and information are just a few ways that an addict can take the steps necessary to stop focusing on the drug. And once an addict decides to quit, please support them as much as you can. Don’t abandon them. Give them a chance to live life as you do.

“We know a lot about the antimicrobial properties of manuka honey but had much less scientific information about the immune system-related effects of honey in wound healing,” says Ralf Schlothauer, chief technology officer of Comvita, which is linked with the research, according to a Massey statement. “The findings suggest there could be a number of honeys to consider if you want to stimulate the immune system. Ultimately, it might mean we produce medical honey products that are specifically tailored for certain treatments,” adds Schlothauer. IANS

Pain killers retard recovery LONDON: Giving pain killers to heart attack patients may actually retard their recovery. The stabbing ache in the chest, for instance, is felt when it actually stimulates the body to repair itself, say researchers. The study may help explain why heart attack patients given morphine are more likely to die and could lead to new approaches to treatment. The pain signals stem cells to repair damaged heart cells. Bristol University researchers found that a molecule involved in the sensation of pain is released from heart nerves during a cardiac attack. Called substance P, it draws stem cells from the bone marrow to the area of heart muscle starved of oxygen by the attack, the journal Circulation reports. Once there, the stem cells can create new blood vessels to supply fresh blood to the heart cells. Paolo Madeddu, who led the study, said, “The ultimate aim is to develop a therapy which will regenerate the muscle damaged or lost after a heart attack.”

Scientists discover pill for sleep problems WASHINGTON: The discovery of cellular switches in the bioclock that tells the body when to sleep and metabolise food may lead to new drugs to treat sleep problems and metabolic disorders, including diabetes. Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, led by Ronald M. Evans, professor in its Gene Expression Lab, showed that two cellular switches found on the nucleus of mouse cells, known as REV-ERBa and REVERBß, are essential for maintaining normal sleeping and eating cycles and for metabolism of nutrients from food. The findings describe a powerful link between circadian rhythms and metabolism and suggest a new avenue for treating

disorders of both systems, including jet lag, sleep disorders, obesity and diabetes, the journal Nature reported. “This fundamentally changes our knowledge about the workings of the circadian clock and

how it orchestrates our sleepwake cycles, when we eat and even the times our bodies metabolize nutrients,” said Evans, according to a university statement. “Nuclear (pertaining to nucleus) receptors can be target-

ed with drugs, which suggests we might be able to target REV-ERBa and ß to treat disorders of sleep and metabolism,” added Evans. Nurses, emergency personnel and others who work shifts that alter the normal 24-hour cycle of waking and sleeping are at much higher risk for a number of diseases, including metabolic disorders such as diabetes. In mammals, the circadian timing system is orchestrated by a central clock in the brain and subsidiary clocks in most other organs. The master clock in the brain is set by light and determines the overall diurnal or nocturnal preference of an animal, including sleep-wake cycles and feeding behaviour. IANS

HEALTH TIPS

Ankle injuries need care

A

nkle injuries can affect your mobility and can also be quite painful. Here are some simple tips to tackle those ankle injuries. n To improve the ankle range of motion, the following exercises are advised: 1. Dorsiflexion: Move your ankle and point your foot back towards your nose. Continue this procedure till you feel any discomfort. Hold the position for 15 seconds and repeat it at least 10 times. 2. Inversion: Move your ankle and keep your toes pointed up, turning your foot inwards. Your foot should be turned inwards so that the sole faces the other leg. Hold the position for 15 seconds and repeat it at least 10 times. 3. Eversion: Moving only your ankle and keeping your toes pointed up, turn your foot outward, away from your other leg. Hold the position for 15 seconds and repeat it at least 10 times. 4. The alphabet: For this type of exercise, sit on a chair with your feet dangling in the air or your feet hanging off the edge. With your foot draw the alphabet one letter at a time by moving your injured foot. n To strengthen the muscle around your ankle the following exercises can be done: 1. Eversion Isometrics: Be seated and place the outside of the injured foot against a table leg or closed door. Then push outward with your foot into the object your foot is against causing a contraction of your muscles. Hold this m for 15 seconds and then relax for 15 seconds. This exercise can be continued for 10-15 times. 2. Inversion Isometrics: While seated, place the inside of the injured foot against a table leg or closed door. Then push inward with your foot into the object your foot is against thereby causing a contraction of your muscles. Hold this for 15 seconds and then relax for 10 seconds. 3. Dorsiflexion: Moving only your ankle point your foot backwards towards your nose. Continue this till you feel that you cannot tilt back any more. Hold this for 15 seconds and then relax for 10 seconds. 4. Plantar felxion: Moving only your ankle, point your foot forwards while keeping your knees straight. Hold this for 15 seconds and then relax for 10 seconds. 5. Inversion: Moving only your ankle slowly turn your foot inwards. Hold this for 15 seconds and then relax for 10 seconds. 6. The glamour behind the glitz

S

hubha Phutela, a Bangalore-based model turned actor, might soon make her debut in Telugu, if all goes well. She was crowned Miss South India in 2010 and later on she modelled for top brands like Fastrack, Honda City, TVS Scooty and Kingfisher. Currently she’s awaiting the release of Maalai Pozhudhin Mayakathilaey, her debut film in Tamil. We hear that she’s in talks for Ram’s upcoming film to be directed by Bommarillu Bhaskar. BVSN Prasad is producing this film. This untitled film was officially launched few weeks ago and when BVSN Prasad and Bommarillu Bhaskar saw the portfolio of Shubha Phutela, she was immediately called for an audition. Sources close to the film unit say that she might soon sign the film. The film will go on floors later this summer after Ram wraps up shooting for his upcoming film Endhukante Premanta.

Riteish and I are two items in Kya Super...: Tusshar

A

ctor Tusshar Kapoor, who has once again teamed up with Riteish Deshmukh, says they are the “two items” in the film Kya Super Kool Hain Hum. “We are the only two items in this film. We are the item boys and have shot for the song — Dil garden garden ho gaya,” said Tusshar, responding to a question whether there was an item song in the film and what he thought of the trend of such numbers. “We are there in that song with the girls. So you can consider those girls the item girls or call us item boys, it doesn’t matter,” he added. Tusshar was speaking on the sets of Extra Innings on Set Max, where he came to promote Kya Super Kool Hain Hum, a sequel to the duo’s 2005 sex comedy Kya Kool Hain Hum. IANS

Mahie Gill is Mona Darling in Zanjeer

B

indu’s iconic ‘Mona Darling’ act in Zanjeer in 1973 is now being taken over by Mahie Gill, who admits the role is challenging but says she will pull it off. Ajit had played the arch-villain Teja in the original; for the remake, Prakash Raj has been roped in. Southern actor Ram Charan Teja, son of superstar Chiranjeevi, will be essaying Amitabh’s role. “I was initially apprehensive about doing the part. I wondered if I’d be able to carry it off. It was director Apoorva Lakhia who convinced me. To recreate the original vamp ‘Mona Darling’ of the 1970s for today’s audience is a challenge. And most of my scenes are with Prakash

Raj who is a very good actor. I think I’ll be able to pull it off,” said Mahie. The culture of an overweight seductress went out with Bindu. While Bindu got away with slit dresses and body stockings in Zanjeer, Mahie, we are told, would be doing some heavy duty lovemaking scenes with Prakash Raj and would also need to get into better shape. “We definitely want Mahie’s Mona Darling to go beyond Binduji. If Binduji became synonymous with the character in the 1970s, we want people to shout ‘Mona Darling’ at Mahie when she steps out,” said Amit Mehra, son of Prakash Mehra who had produced and directed the original Zanjeer.

says no to baring it all

J

ennifer Love Hewitt may play a provocative call girl on her upcoming Lifetime series, The Client List, but had the role called for baring it all, she’d have declined the offer. “I wouldn’t have done nudity, no,” Hewitt, 33, said during a conference call when asked if she’d have taken on the project had it been on a racier network like Showtime or HBO. “That’s not something that I feel particularly comfortable with.” Added the actor, “I also think that it’s sexier not to show everything. I feel like imaginations can do way more.” Especially for now, it seems like the imagination is all a guy is going to get, given Hewitt’s current relationship status.

KAKURO

How to play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

autam Gambhir, like his team Kolkata Knight Riders’ owner, Shah Rukh Khan, is certainly a worried

man. Having faced two back to back defeats (the first against Delhi Daredevils and the next against Rajasthan Royals), Gambhir would be hoping that there would be a change of fortunes when KKR take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore today. Touted as one of the strongest teams in the IPL, KKR need to soon find their footing to avoid further embarrassment they have earlier been subjected to. But for last season, KKR never really made it to the top three. If KKR needs to win this match and make their presence felt in the IPL, then players like Yusuf Pathan, Brendon McCullum, Jacques Kallis will have to come up with match

winning performances. Royal Challengers Bangalore on the other hand, go into the match with a victory behind them. The Daniel Vettori led side, defeated Delhi Daredevils by 20 runs in their previous match. AB de Villiers hammered a match winning 64 of 42 balls to help his side reach a formidable 157 while Muttiah Muralitharan scalped 3 for 25 to bring about a collapse in the opponent’s batting line-up.

KKR VS RCB AT 4 PM ON SET MAX RCB is a team which has talent in abundance – While the team has young lads like Virat Kohli, Mayank Agarwal and AB de Villiers, there is no dearth of experience with Chris Gayle, Tilakaratne Dilshan, Muttiah Muralitharan and skipper Vettori leading from the front. While KKR, at the moment, would be playing for honour, RCB would hope that a victory in this match could see them reach the top of the points table.

CSK vs DD at 8pm on Set Max

Daredevils up against the Kings C hennai Super Kings are on a high after their victory over Deccan Chargers on Sunday. Having defeated the Bulls by a huge margin of 74 runs, CSK would look to carry forward this form when they clash with Delhi Daredevils today. Skipper Dhoni would hope that his men in yellow deliver their goods once again. Dwayne Bravo made little work of the DC bowlers while million dollar baby, Ravindra Jadeja silenced critics after a superb display of batting and bowling skills against DC – 48

runs of 29 balls and figures of five for 16. Meanwhile, DD would hope to apply the brakes on the defending champions run riot. Having good support from the crowd, the Virender Sehwag led side would look to beat CSK on home turf. DD won their first match against KKR while they lost their second match when they played RCB on Saturday. If DD fails to win this match, they might find themselves struggling at the lower rungs of the points table but the story will not be any different incase CSK end as the vanquished. AS

A

ggression is always present in the world of sports even when it is with respect to the gentleman’s game. With chukking and sledging becoming a regular part of this sport, it come as no surprise when one gets to see tempers flare up on the field. India has its own set of angry young men and it does not astonish one that Harbhajan Singh seems to lead the way. Having earlier been entangled in the ‘monkeygate’ controversy where Australian player Andrew Symonds accused Harbhajan of calling him a monkey, and on another instance where he lost his temper during an IPL match that saw him slap fellow country-mate Sreeshant, it came as no surprise to see Harbhajan’s behaviour on field last night when Mumbai Indians took on Deccan Chargers. In a controversial decision where DC skipper, Kumar Sangakkara was given not out although he was bowled, Harbhajan got into a verbal dual with the umpires. His animated approach forced the umpires to review their decision. Though he was right with respect to the dismissal, yet his demand and mannerism of asking for a review (although there is no provision of reviews in the IPL) was certainly against the spirit of the game.

PLAYER OF THE DAY ROHIT SHARMA: The Mumbai Indians’ player smashed a quick-fire unbeaten 73 of just 50 balls which included five sixes and four fours against Deccan Chargers last night. Having restricted Deccan Chargers to 138, it looked like Mumbai Indians would have clinched victory with ease. but some disciplined bowling from Dale Steyn (who scalped three wickets giving away just 12 runs) and Ankit Sharma, saw Mumbai Indians huff and puff their way to the top. In a game with fluctuating fortunes, it seemed like a lost battle for Mumbai having to score 18 runs of the last over for victory. But the heroics of this 24-year-old player who hammered a six of the fourth deliver and another in the last ball, saw him seal the game in favour of his side.

Clarke was disappointed with his team’s performance in the match so far. “We have no excuses for not bowling and fielding as well as we would have liked day one, day two and certainly no excuses for being five down on that wicket today,” he said. However, he was still cofident the Australians could win the match. “I think we’re going to have to bowl better than what we did in the first innings and we’re going to have to try to make as many runs as we can in this first innings to see how close we are to them. “I certainly think we can still win the Test match from here.” His West Indian counterpart Darren Sammy was

by contrast delighted with his team. “The team played well. The bowlers supported each other,” he said. “We’re quite happy with the way the day went.” Sammy snapped up the first wicket to fall as having added only one run to his overnight score of 13, Ed Cowan was drawn into a shot to a ball just outside off stump and edged through to the keeper. Shane Watson, batting for the first time in a Test at number three, was fortunate to survive twice when he had scored five. Sammy’s persevering line just outside off stump worked again when David Warner, having scored 42 off 55 balls, played at a ball without much foot movement and Darren Bravo took the catch at second slip. After the early scares Watson had settled but when he turned a Fidel Edwards delivery to fine leg he was looking for a second run which would have been tight. AFP

Pakistan mulls T20 league KARACHI: Deprived of hosting international matches since a deadly attack on the Sri Lankan team bus three years ago, Pakistan hopes a high-profile new Twenty20 league can lure back overseas players. No international team has played in Pakistan since the March 2009 attack in Lahore, which left eight people dead and several visiting players wounded, and the national team has had to play its “home” matches abroad, mostly in the United Arab Emirates. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is

still waiting for Bangladesh’s response to an invitation to play a limited-overs series later this month. If Bangladesh is reluctant to come, it is inevitable that bigger-name teams like Australia, India, England and South Africa will continue to stay away while any doubts linger over players’ safety. Passion for cricket in Pakistan remains undiminished, however, and corporate interest has reignited the PCB’s efforts to start a Pakistan Premier League (PPL), modelled on the megabucks Indian Premier League. City to fight till the end MANCHESTER: James Milner has promised Manchester City will fight for the English Premier League title until they have no mathematical chance of being crowned champions. City face mid-table West Bromwich Albion at Eastlands on Wednesday where they will bid to bounce back from the crushing blow of a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal last weekend that appeared to scupper their title hopes. That left City eight points behind leaders and champions Manchester United. Roberto Mancini’s team led the Premier League from the start of October until March but their slump, combined with United winning 11 of 12 league games, has all but finished their hopes of a first title since 1968. City manager Mancini went into the weekend admitting that a defeat at the Emirates and a United win over QPR — they beat the strugglers 2-0 at Old Trafford — would kill his team’s chances. England midfielder Milner maintains City will attempt to win each of their remaining six matches — a run that includes a home game against United — and will fight on until it’s impossible for

them to take the title. But Milner said City must learn from the way that their Premier League campaign has fallen apart. “We’ll aim to win our last six games — as we would have done had we won at Arsenal — but it is going to be very difficult now. “Nothing has changed in that respect

and we have to target 18 points and six wins so we can end this season on a high — we’ll just have to see where that takes us, but I can promise our fans we’ll never give in so long as the title is still a possibility. “For two-thirds of the season we’ve led the table and played some great football, but we’ve not played as well as we can of late. “That we’re not top anymore is down to us and the fact we’ve not played very well is down to us, too. All we can do is try and get back to winning ways, starting with West Brom on Wednesday. “We need to learn lessons from this season and take positives from it. We haven’t performed to the sort of standards we set earlier in the season. He added: “We need to learn from this, dust ourselves down and then go into the West Brom game in a positive frame of mind. There are six games left — it’s not over and we will be giving everything to make sure we end the season as strongly as possible.” David Silva could return after missing the Arsenal game with a knee problem, with midfielder Yaya Toure suffering a similar injury at the weekend.

Arsenal aim for 2nd spot LONDON: Wojciech Szczesny has insisted Arsenal could yet catch Manchester City and finish the season as Premier League runners-up. Arsene Wenger's side travel to face relegation-threatened Wolves on Wednesday where they will attempt to build on last weekend's 1-0 win over City. That victory, secured by Mikel Arteta's late goal, effectively ended City's hopes of winning the English title and moved the Gunners to within 10 points of Roberto Mancini's side with six games remaining. The primary target for the north London club is to finish third and gain direct qualification into the Champions League group stage, but Szczesny believes City may now falter, paving the way for Arsenal to clinch second spot with Manchester United all but assured of retaining their Premier League title. "I believe we will finish third," said the Arsenal goalkeeper. "Man City have lost their chance of the title -- it was a big blow to us last year and they might drop a little bit, so who knows maybe we can catch them as well. "Our aim is to win every game and if we do that we will be in the Champions League next season."

Wenger was frustrated by a mid-season slump that prevented his side from mounting a stronger challenge at the top of the table. But a run of eight wins in the last nine league games has revived their season, with the unexpected defeat at Queens Park Rangers the only blemish on Arsenal's recent record. And midfielder Yossi Benayoun believes they

must maintain that run to fend off the challenge of fourth-placed Newcastle and Tottenham, two points behind the Gunners and Chelsea, who are four points adrift of Arsenal in sixth place. "We had to take three points (against City) to open the gap," said Benayoun. "It will be very close until the end of the season.”
