A MONSOON ROMANCE
No other planet in the solar system has intrigued us earthlings as much as the Red Planet — perhaps due to its similarities to the moon, partly due to the presence of valleys, volcanoes and other features of the Earth, which makes it an option for a home for future generations some day. Nasa’s Curiosity has taken a first look around its neighbourhood and found it looks just like home. Let’s trace our Mars missions.

he Cyberabad police seems to have made crucial leads in the suspicious death of Infosys employee B Neelima who was found dead in the Infosys campus few days ago. The doubts shrouding the death of the techie have now been put to rest following a forensic investigation at the Gandhi Hospital. The forensic department submitted its report to the police department
on Thursday. The report has said that the death of Neelima occurred because of haemorrhage. The police primarily came to the conclusion that the techie committed suicide as she was disturbed by the developments in her personal life. “We came to know that she was having problems in her marital life. This might have forced her to commit suicide,” a police official investigating the case told Postnoon. According to the information gathered by the police, Neelima,

The idea is to get more information about Neelima’s personal problems. However, following this incident, the police have decided to ask all IT companies to beef up their security set up to avoid such suicide incidents in future.

n an unusual raid, the GHMC health officials have issued notices to a sweet shop and a restaurant. In this surprise raid by the additional commissioner (health and sanitation), L Vandan Kumar, who was accompanied by CMOH Shalini Devi and AMOH of Circle 10 Balaji Raju and other health officials, it was found that Mainland China was using raw food material and cooked food preserved in fridges, above the prescribed time limits. The food found as rotten was seized and sent for examination. Later, the team inspected the Pulla Reddy Sweet Shop, situated in Somajiguda, where the officials found that the sweets were being prepared in unhygienic conditions in kitchen and with no minimum precautions. The inspecting team was surprised to see the boxes used for packing, filled with dust. When the additional commissioner (H&S) enquired about the salaries of the employees, he found they were from Jharkhand and Anantapur and were being paid `4,000 only, which he felt was against minimum wages. . Thursday’s raid on hotels and eateries was conducted under supervision of the additional commissioner (H&S) himself, where the team inspected 12 establishments. The additional commissioner has informed that these raids will continue.

or once, it was not a traffic cop’s waywardness that led to a massive gridlock on the Punjagutta main road, early this morning. Out of the blue, a gaping hole appeared in the middle of the road opposite Model House in Punjagutta. This threw the normal traffic out of gear. Fortunately, the crater was so big that nobody could miss it, and absence of rain averted possible casualties. Office-goers were caught unawares. Soon, a two-kilometer stretch, all the way to Erramanzil, formed a bumperto-bumper vehicle line. While some commuters tried to escape via bylanes, it led to confusion and trouble. Deputy municipal commissioner of Punjagutta, T Sakala Reddy said, “We are carrying out repair works by pumping all the sewage water out and filling it with concrete and sand. Until then, we will make sure that steps are taken to ease the traffic.” Motor pumps and pipes were being readied to pump the sewage water from under the road. idea worked out but unfortunately, after completion of the basic structure, work is in limbo. “The building was supposed to be ready for this academic year but unfortunately we are continuing at the temporary location,” says the head master, who did not want to be named. According to the head master, there are eight schools in Secunderabad Mandal alone which were under reconstruction and whose work is pending since several months. Similar to the situation at Regimental Bazaar, the kids here are continuing their studies at a temporary location. One of the structures listed as dilapidated is one of the oldest schools in Allugadda Bavi, maintained by a trust. Started in 1955, the school continues to run in the age-old structure under asbestos sheets. For this school, notice was given in 2003, while for the other two mentioned above, notices were given in 2004. The Government Primary School in Subash Road received the notice from the GHMC on June 15, 2011. The deputy inspector of schools, Secunderabad, Venugopala Chary, said that one of the schools in Subhash Road was dislocated completely. The government has sanctioned the reconstruction of the Kummarguda school, but until then, he was making sure that no one avails the dilapidated structure. About the Regimental Bazaar school, he said the delay was being caused due to the contractors.

limb or his life. It has been more than a year since the staff has represented the issue to the collector of Hyderabad, but no action has been initiated. The building is over 60 years old. Another government school of Regimental Bazaar, known for its record of cent per cent results, is now sharing space with an already existing school called Hill Street School. Out of 120 students, some 25 to 30 per cent less are attending classes due to the change in location, which
is about half a kilometer away from the original school building. According to the head master, even though the building was listed as ‘dilapidated’ by the GHMC, the engineers of RMSA (Rastriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan) found the structure to be intact. Engineers who took up the issue have chosen a novel idea to link the beams of the old building with the newly raised structure from the open ground. This

While four are government schools, one has been run by a charitable trust for decades. The Upper primary school in Kummarguda (Pot Market) needs immediate repairs or reconstruction. REPORTER’S DIARY
Cong leaders duck AP affairs D
uring the early sixties war between India and China, there was a compulsory recruitment of the youth into the army. As most of them did not return home alive, parents and teenagers used to hide from the police who would com out of the blue and pick up the young. Parallel can be drawn in the current AP Congress matters. The AICC in-charge of AP affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad seems to have forgotten the road to Hyderabad. The leader who had hogged the headlines some time back with his frequent trips to Hyderabad for party affairs was last seen in the City on July 1, that too not exactly for AP party works, but to garner support for the then UPA’ presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee. Azad did not take stock of the situation in the party post the bypolls. He is angry with all leaders who could just win a miserable two seats. One Congress leader said in jest that Azad is scared of facing active media corps of the State, hence giving it a miss. Congress grapevine has it that it is not Azad alone, the Centre’s emissary, Vayalar Ravi, who made many visits before the bypoll too is ducking the AP issue. No central leader would like to take up the AP party charge as it is in a deep mess. IA
MANTRIS FOLLOW CM?
Cadres learn from leaders. If the CM Kiran Kumar Reddy loves to come late for works and functions, could his cabinet colleagues be left far behind? Postponement of press conferences by mantris at the State secretariat has become common thing that put the P&R department in a quandary. This reporter saw how the government PR was tearing his hair in despair after sending mail after mail on the change of time and date of pre-planned press meetings. Agreed, it is the privilege of the minister to shift a meeting he plans but he should also realise the media’s time is valuable. Indeed, there is no slave who is more adherent to the clock than the media, and yet they are the ones often coming on the firing line of those who did not quite like the coverage. It is time that mantris learn others’ time is also valuable. IA
CURBING VISITOR FLOW The GHMC head office hosts more than 5,000 visitors a day. A walk from the main door to the PRO’s office leaves one with the stench of urine. While the PRO’s office has gone to great lengths in ignoring this problem, the troubled lot are the journalists waiting here for an interview with some official. Maybe it is the department’s way of keeping visitors at bay. It seems to follow

CLOCK, STOCK AND NO PARALLEL
Clocks have stopped ticking, while everything seems to continue doing its bit. The clocks that symbolised the City’s grand past, have fallen into disuse as people in the City now have
modern clocks at home. The City has a dozen or so old clocks which are either not working or their needles are missing. There are occasions when the government has shown some interests and made a hurried repair which does not last because those clocks were the products of giant brains and our pea-brained modern clockmechanics have little idea about them. With the impending COP-11, the GHMC has plans to repair these clocks, as the delegates vis-
It’s the month of Iftaar parties. The Medical students of Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) hosted a grand Iftaar Party on Thursday. The chairman and secretary of Shadan Group of Institutions Vizarat Rasool Khan, Shadan Tehniyat and members of the group graced the occasion. The party also saw the attendance of prominent persons from other communities too. Speaking on the occasion, the MD of SIMS Sharib Rasool Khan said that the iftaar party hosted by the students is symbol of unity and brotherhood and added that such parties would further strengthen relationships between various communities. He hoped that the students of the college would continue this tradition in coming years as well. But a trend (welcome though) of late is that anybody hosts a Iftaar party. It’s like Christmas tree or star which has gone out of Christian fold into the universal hand. IA With inputs from Inkeshaf Ahmed, Md Nizamuddin and Rahul Ramakrishna

Naidu has been the renowned architect of the BJP-led NDA besides being the master sculptor of Hitec City. It was Babu who led the IT scramble in the State, no questions about that. This was proven when the US presidents decided to visit Hyderabad during his India visit. Hyderabad was the only other point of contact in India for George Bush besides the official New Delhi. The young man in a hurry was what Babu when he toppled his F-in-L and became CM (crit-
ics are unduly harsh on Babu. After all, every other person in TDP was toppling NTR!). He is also famously called by his critics and political opponents as “a man always ahead of times” for his revolutionary programmes like Janmabhoomi, which provided a platform for public and government officials to work together to develop the State and his vision to set up engineering colleges for the growth of professional education in the State. Naidu began his career as an MLA from his native Chandragiri Assembly constituency as a Congress Party MLA in 1978, as a contemporary of former CM YS Rajasekhar Reddy. daughter’s hands. Both were very close friends as they became MLAs the same year. Their relationship soured after Naidu joined NTR’s Telugu Desam Party in 1982. After losing the election from Chandragiri constituency in 1985, Naidu contested from Kuppam Assembly seat and won it with a comfortable margin. Kuppam became his permanent base from where he won for five times in a row. Interestingly, he also has achieved the record of winning Assembly elections without visiting his constituency even to file his nomination. The reason is that he endeared himself with the people so much that they fail to imagine any other alternative .
STRENGTH
His close friends say that his strength is his never say die attitude. He also has shown no naked nepotism as many Congressmen did. He has a modern outlook and has always wanted AP to be a world-class City.
WEAKNESS
His weakness, many believe is that he still lives in the ‘prince charming’ cocoon, without realising that much water has flown since he was overthrown. The CEO tag has gone to his head. He ceased to listen to sane voices. He continues to refuse to see reality. But for his credit, people say he is more well-meaning than the Congress. A TRIP TO MARS
Thomas Edison’s A Trip to Mars is considered to be the first American science fiction film. This movie was produced in 1910 in kinetoscope by Thomas Edison. The movie deals with how a professor makes a reverse gravity powder and takes a trip to Mars where he encounters numerous adventures. It is a four-minute silent film. Following this numerous other movies were also made with Mars adventures as the background.

fter a 567 million kilometre journey that took some eight and a half months, Curiosity, NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory, landed safely near the planet’s equator on August 6, 2012. The last of our solar system’s four rocky planets, Mars is about half the Earth’s size. It is very Earth-like with a 24-hour and 37 minute-long day. Since its orbit is twice as long as the Earth’s, a Martian year takes 687 days to complete and an axial tilt of 25.2° means Mars has seasons like the Earth. Surface gravity on Mars is 38 per cent of the gravity on Earth which means that lighter gases have escaped into outer space. Today Mars’ ultra thin atmosphere is made of 95 per cent carbon dioxide and some sulphur, chlorine and phosphorous. As there is no atmospheric shield, the planet is bombarded by deadly ionising radiation. Mars has the largest dust storms of the solar system. The solar system’s highest mountain, the 21 km-high Olympus Mons, and one of the solar system’s largest canyons, the 7 km-deep Valles Marineris which is four times deeper and nine times longer than the Grand Canyon, are both on this planet. Mars is cold — temperatures vary between -87° C and 0° C, and the ice on the polar caps is mostly frozen carbon dioxide and water ice. Mars no longer has a dipolar magnetic field, so a compass would not work on the planet! Two small, irregularly shaped, natural moons orbit Mars — interestingly, Phobos rises in the West while Deimos rises in the East! Mars was known to the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians and Chinese. The Greeks and the Romans associated it with the gods of war because of its reddish appearance which is due to the rust or iron oxide in its soil. Astrologers and alchemists considered Mars a symbol of masculinity, and used the symbol for

it. The 4th century Indian scientific text Surya-siddhanta tried to estimate its diameter, while the Indian week day Mangalavaram is named after the planet. In recent times, interest in
Mars revived in 1877 when the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli used a 22-cm telescope to observe Mars. He noted a labyrinth of straight lines or grooves which he called canali.

Wrongly translated as ‘canals’ this led to frenzied speculation about an advanced civilization on Mars. Percival Lowell’s sincere but deluded book Life on Mars; HG Wells’ science fiction The War of the Worlds about the Martian invasion of the Earth, and Nikola Tesla’s claim that he received radio signals from Mars added fuel to popular speculation about life on Mars. Such was the mythology of life on Mars that when Orson Welles broadcast a radio adaptation of HG Well’s book in 1938, a great public panic ensued. Even in the 1960s articles were being published about Martian biology — clearly, the great biologist Alfred Russell Wallace’s criticism of
Lowell in his 1907 book Is Mars Habitable had limited impact! After the canali were shown to be an optical illusion because of a limitation in the early telescopes, and after American, Russian and European Mars missions did not find any life on Mars, the wild fantasising stopped. But in 1999, NASA’S Viking orbiter sent a picture of a ‘happy face’ in the Galle Crater, and many did not accept that it was just a play of shadows and not the sign of some intelligent Martians. However, some serious questions about life on Mars remain: is the small quantity of methane detected on Mars of biological origin? In 1984, a Martian meteorite was discovered in Antarctica with what seemed like fossil records of primitive life. Did primitive life exist on Mars 3.6 billion years ago? NASA’s Curiosity may set us on the path to the answers: weighing a thousand kilos, it carries over ten times the mass of scientific instruments carried by previous NASA rovers. The robotic rover has an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer to determine the elements in the soil, and a sample analysis instrument that will look for carbonbased compounds. Curiosity will analyse soil samples and beam the information to the Earth for the next two years. At $2.5 billion, Curiosity cost a mere 1/6th of the expenditure for the London Olympics but it has already demonstrated humanity’s resolve to go faster, higher and stronger to unravel the Universe’s mysteries.

Time sought from SC The Union government appeals to the apex court for time till November.
NEW DELHI: The central government on Thursday moved the Supreme Court for “further and final extension of time” for the auction and allocation of 122 2G licenses and spectrum that were cancelled by the apex court by its order of Feb 2, 2012. The application by the government has said that it needed time till Nov 12, 2012, to commence the auction and another 40 days to complete auction and allocate licenses and spectrum. The government said it needed further extension of time for the auction of 2G licenses in “public interest” to ensure that the “auction yielded maximum revenue to the government of India. It would, therefore, be in the interest of justice to grant the extension needed.” The application listed eight steps that the government has already taken to ensure the “conduct and completion of the auction” in accordance with the orders of the apex court. The steps so far complied with included Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) recommendations on the

The government also said that the Telecom Commission had made recommendations to the government April 30 after considering the report of the internal committee and the recommendations of the TRAI. The application, seeking extension of time for ensuring the efficient conduct of the auction of spectrum, said that the
government after the auction bids had issued letter of intent to Times Internet Limited Aug 6. The earlier extension of three months given by the apex court is due to expire Aug 31. The apex court by its Feb 2 order had cancelled all the 122 licenses that were granted by former telecom minister A. Raja on and after Jan 10, 2008. The court while cancelling the 2G licences had given the government four months’ time till June 2 to complete the process of auctioning the cancelled licences.
NEW DELHI: A parliamentary panel on Thursday recommended a probe into the issue of Bt Brinjal, saying that adequate tests had not been carried out and the approval committee was under “tremendous pressure” from the “industry and a minister” to approve it. Basudeb Acharia, who heads the parliamentary standing committee on agriculture, said: “The issue needs to be probed as the co-chairman of the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) Arjula Reddy was under tremendous pressure as he was getting calls from the industry, GEAC and a minister to approve Bt Brinjal.” He said the probe should cover the period right from the beginning to the imposing of a moratorium.

Pak seeks tech help from India NEW DELHI: Mazhar Zaidi and Farjad Nabi are journaliststurned-filmmakers from Pakistan. When they came together to make “Zinda Bhaag” on a burning issue in Pakistan, they had to seek help from across the border, as the Lahore-based film industry is in tatters and there was no technical help they could fall back on. “It was a challenge to go for a feature film in Pakistan. The whole film industry has collapsed. No technical facilities are available. Nor are actors available,” said Zaidi, the film’s producer. He was speaking at the Pakistan Studies Programme in Jamia Millia Islamia in the capital. Besides seeking technical assistance from India, Zaidi and director Nabi roped in Meenu Gaur, an alumnus of Jamia’s Mass Communication and Research Centre (MCRC) and a PhD in film studies from London, as co-director.

The Lahore-based film industry is in tatters and there was no technical help they could fall back on. As acting talent was not handy, they invited Naseeruddin Shah to conduct workshops with non-actors. The film, to be released in December, takes up the sensitive issue of illegal immigration, a burning topic in Pakistan. As the team researched on the reasons for youngsters taking the risk of illegal migration and visited neighbourhoods in Lahore to meet such youngsters, they realised that there were areas where each family had a story to tell. The topic was too close to these youngsters and their families and thus it made sense to cast these youngsters in the film, aided by some training in acting. They zeroed in on one such neighbourhood as the location for shooting. Zaidi says that as shooting began, “we were stopped on the streets... People congratulated us for shooting in Lahore. One gentleman claimed it was after 20 years that a film was being made in Lahore.” The trio said that themes like “Bol”, “Khuda Ke Liye” and “Ramchand Pakistani” were equally popular as any mainstream entertainment film and these bold subjects were, in fact, financially viable. The district is completely empty of rebel fighters. Regime forces are now advancing into Salaheddin,” said Hossam Abu Mohammed, a Free Syrian Army (FSA) commander, with the battle for Syria’s commercial capital raging into a second day. “The fighters are withdrawing to (nearby) Sukari district, where they are preparing a counter-attack,” he told AFP by telephone. Abu Mohammed cited heavy shelling and the army’s use of thermobaric bombs, which throw out a wall of fire to incinerate targets in enclosed spaces. “A large number of civilians were killed, as were some 40 rebels,” he said. “Forty buildings have been flattened.” State television said: “Our special forces have cleansed Salaheddin district of terrorists.” But Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that fighters remained in the district, ready to “fight to the death.” Wassel Ayub, who commands the Nur al-Haq Brigade, said the FSA had withdrawn “to open a new front in Saif al-

Education comes at a price in China
W
hether you call them jiu ling hou — the “post-’90s generation” — or millennials, things are not so different for recent college graduates in China and the US. Derided in both countries as spoiled, selfish and entitled, yet struggling to find decent work, they belong to generations whose high expectations for comfort and prosperity have been thwarted by economic trends. In America, the class of 2012 faces crippling student debt, declining wages, and 9.9 percent unemployment rate for college graduates under 25 years old — all against the backdrop of a lingering national downturn. But in China, the situation may be even worse. A full quarter of recent college graduates in China are unemployed, according to official statistics published by the state-run Xinhua News Agency. And many of those who are employed end up working in jobs very far from their undergraduate studies. The Chinese media is rife with tales of overeducated young people taking jobs as cashiers, assembly-line workers, even “night soil collectors.”In fact, some argue that the prospects for educated workers is worse than for low-skilled labourers. Factory workers are in high demand in the industrial heartland of southern China. In the last year alone, wages for migrant workers rose 14.9 percent. But while an education has long been considered a ticket to a brighter future in China, the number of well-paying jobs has not grown nearly as fast as enrolment. Over the last decade, China’s college-educated population has multiplied eightfold, from 830,000 graduating in 1998 to 6.8 million in 2012. GLOBAL POST

INDIA’S EDUCATION SYSTEM
14
A QUICK FIX
THE ANONYMOUS ALIEN
I
had promised another story this week on the talent that lies hidden in all of us…that often only emerges with a little nurturing. But that has to wait until next week, because events of the last few days in India are so extraordinary that they demand attention now. Here’s the story. As readers of this column know, I have serious concerns about India’s future because of its substandard education system. I’ve written repeatedly about the difficulties employers have finding suitable talent. I, myself, regularly turn away Indian job seekers who were educated at reputable universities in India who do not know basic things: How old were they seven years ago? Who is Albert Einstein? Does the Earth go around the sun, or vice versa? The weakness of the Indian education system was formally documented two years ago, by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). This is a global evaluation organization that assesses where 15year old school children rank compared to peers from other countries in reading, math and science. In 2010, India proudly put forth its two finest education systems, in Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh. And the results? India came in behind
Trinidad and Tobago. Behind Uruguay and Croatia, Serbia and Panama. Behind EVERY country, in fact, except Kyrgyzstan. That’s right, India – the great, emerging global power — came in second to last. SECOND TO LAST. While the results of this test may have been merely eyeopening, India’s response was simply extraordinary and unprecedented. Parents across the country rose up in mass protests, demanding major educational reforms to protect their children’s future. In Delhi, over 75,000 parents marched on the Prime Minister’s home, while in Mumbai, nearly 200,000 parents and their children staged a mass protest in a park in Bandra against an educational system that had utterly failed them. At two schools in Tamil Nadu, parents linked together in a massive hunger strike and sit-in, refusing to eat or move until the government of the state agreed to triple the education budget. And the government responded to the test results and the parents’ demands with a speed and determination never before seen in India to protect the future of the country’s most valuable asset – its children. Major political parties, for the first time in decades, set aside differences and banded together to revamp the education system. Setting a goal of scoring in the top 20 of all countries on the PISA tests within 10 years, the national government agreed to a quadrupling of funds for India’s educational system, as well as a complete overhaul of the out-
dated laws that are choking the system. Perhaps most extraordinary of all, the powerful teachers’ union — conceding that the union itself was at least partially responsible for these horrible test results — endorsed a meritbased system of pay for its teacher-members and an absentee policy that kicked out members who missed more than ten working days per year... Wait a second. None of the above happened. Well, India’s terrible performance on the PISA tests really did happen, but the response wasn’t outraged parents, and motivated politicians and reformed unions. The response from India was rather different. The response was… WE QUIT. That’s right. India’s response to scoring second to last in the most widely accepted international assessment of educational quality was to pull out of the PISA rankings. I guess the reasoning goes like this: if India isn’t ranked, it can’t score badly. Simple, logical… disgusting. I can only assume that the geniuses who decided to pull
India from the PISA assessments, rather than dealing with them, are very much like the university graduates I frequently interview for jobs: they probably haven’t even heard of Tunisia (one of the countries that beat India in the tests), they probably don’t know how old they will be in eleven years, or why the sky is blue. Perhaps their math skills are so bad that they can’t even count to 72, India’s ranking out of the 73 countries that took the PISA test. You can’t solve a problem unless you identify and define it. The PISA tests gave India an objective assessment of where India is at in its education standards. The country could have set a reasonable and attainable goal – to be in the top 50 countries within 10 years, and the top 20 within 20 years, and then found the political will to achieve it. Instead, it quit. As things are going now? I’m not sure anyone in India will be able to spell “education system” in 20 years, let alone fix it. ne doubts if Usain Bolt is complacent. What other man would slow down to look back just paces near the finish line to check where his nearest competitor was? If Bolt had not done it, he could have finished faster at the 200m final. In Beijing, at the 100m final, had he saved his celebrations for later and not during the race, he could have finished faster then too. But Bolt may indulge himself. He can afford to. There was no way any of those who ran with him could have pipped him. In reply to those who had doubted him in the buildup to the Olympics, after clocking 19.32 seconds and retaining the 200m title, he gestured to them with a finger on his lip. He did not stop it there: as if to tell them that he has got more in him, he did some impromptu pushups. As he said he has nothing to prove to anyone. By becoming the first man to win the sprint double twice, he has become immortal. Is he complacent? No, it’s part of his charm.

"Hate music helps bring haters together into a shared community," she said, even if the lyrics have "little to offer followers except extreme rhetoric." Events such as the Hammerfest gathering, underpinned by the Hammerskin Nation movement, attract "racist skinheads ... from all over the country," providing an opportunity for networking, she said.
Mayo said Page was a member of Hammerskin Nation, which describes itself on its website as "a leaderless group of men and women who have adopted the White Power Skinhead lifestyle." Page founded a band called End Apathy in 2005, but he had been involved with white-power rock for some time, playing with bands with warriors names like Celtic Warrior, Radikahl, Intimidation One and Blue-Eyed Devils. There are about 130 such groups in the United States, Mayo said, typically playing concerts for audiences of up to 300 people as well as festivals often attended by like-minded European skinheads. In 2004, the Anti-Defamation League published an introduction to what it called neo-Nazi hate music, explaining its importance in binding the subculture that listens to it.Whereas rightwing extremist leaders in the

een wondering why athletes from across the world are sporting colourful tapes at the ongoing London Olympics? You have beach volleyball player Ilka Semmler wearing bright pink tapes while British sprinter Dwain Chambers has been sporting them as well. Nope, they aren’t all falling apart, but nursing injuries that they do not want interfering with their performance. The kinesio tapes, that come in all colours and hues, are the latest tapes that athletes find some comfort in when they sustain injuries. They can be safely called the latest must-haves for treating sports injuries. Developed by the Japanese over 30 years ago, this tape has only recently taken the world of sports by storm. It uses an adhesive and can be applied to the injured region for support and relief, at the same time allowing flexibility. “When a person fractures a bone, he/she has to wear a plaster of paris (POP) cast. However, this is hard and restricts movement. For soft tissue injuries, which sports persons sustain often, we can’t always suggest using the POP cast. Sports persons don’t have that kind of time or luxury to take a break from their sport. These tapes are perfect for them. They offer support to the injured area as well as allow flexibility allowing full movement of the

He goes on to add that earlier rigid taping was used as the alternative to POP casts. “Although these did allow flexibility, they were still rigid. What sports people really need is something that will be able to support the injured structure, yet allow movement. Kinesio taping does just that. It provides immediate relief. The only drawback is that it is a lot more expensive and are not as widely used in India as it is in the West,” he says. These tapes can be used on smaller joints like shoulders, rib injuries, ankle and neck injuries and also for soft tissue injuries like hamstring pulls. “It is however, important to apply them accurately for maximum efficacy,” warns Dr Rajesh. “Kinesio taping due to its high tension can cause some damage to the skin. Which is why it should only be worn for a few days. The tension of the tape can vary depending on the nature of injury,” he says.

The gut digests our food but most of the food is low in fibre. This puts immense pressure on the gut. As a result of this, a number of ailments may occur. One common ailment is diverticular disease. It is a condition affecting the colon. A diet low in fibre causes constipation. The pressure in the large part of the gut increases, which forces small parts of the gut lining outwards through the muscles surrounding the gut.

Avoid antipsychotics for children with ADHD: Study Antipsychotic prescriptions for children with ADHD have become more common, even though the drugs are not approved to treat the condition.
K
ids, remember to “just say no” to dangerous drugs... even if they’re being offered by your doctor, say researchers. A new study shows that antipsychotic drugs are prescribed during almost one in three of all visits kids make to psychiatrists in the United States, Reuters reported. This marks a dramatic increase from the 1990s, when that rate was just 1 in 11. The researchers said that much of that increase comes from doctors prescribing antipsychotics for ADHD. This is problematic because the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved of antipsychotics for ADHD treatment. Antipsychotic drugs are only approved to treat certain disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autistic disorder. “None of them are approved for use with ADHD,” said Dr Mark Olfson, the study’s lead author, told Reuters. The study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, explains that antipsychotics are linked to damaging side effects, such as diabetes and weight gain. In addition, the drugs’ longterm effects on children’s brains has not been studied, HealthDay reported. Dr Peter Breggin, a psychiatrist not involved with the study, says that the drugs are more damaging than people realize. “We have a national catastrophe,” Breggin told HealthDay. “This is a situation where we have ruined the brains of millions of children.”
What is ADHD?
A
DHD is a problem with inattentiveness, overactivity, impulsivity, or a combination. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioural disorder of childhood. It affects about 3 per cent to 5 per cent of school-aged children. ADHD is diagnosed much more often in boys than in
girls. ADHD may run in families, but it is not clear exactly what causes it. Whatever the cause may be, it seems to be set in motion early in life as the brain is developing. Imaging studies suggest that the brains of children with ADHD are different from those of other children. Source: PubMed Health
Cell signals inhibit ability to fight infection LONDON: Infants are prone to sickness due to under-developed immune systems, but it may be possible to activate crucial cells to help them fight off diseases from an earlier age, say scientists. Researchers at the University of Michigan Health System suggest the natural ability to fight infection is there early on - but key cell signals inhibit the growth of essential immune cells early in life, the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday. Blocking this signalling could lead to improving an infant’s response to infection, according to the study published in Nature Immunity. Study author Yasmina Laouar said, “What happens at early age is that natural killer cells, like many other immune cells, do not complete their functional maturation until adulthood.” “During this time we are left with an immature immune system that cannot protect us against infections, the reason why newborns and infants are more prone to infection.” There is a large gap in understanding infant immunity, specifically why the natural killer cell responses are deficient, according to the researchers. IANS
Breggin added that antipsychotics act on the frontal lobes of the brain, which is the same area that is targeted by a lobotomy. “These are lobotomising drugs,” he told HealthDay. “Of course, they will reduce all behaviour, including irritability.” Previous research has also shown that antipsychotics are unnecessarily prescribed to elderly patients and incarc erated children. Adolescents consuming less iron, vitamins MADRID: Adolescence is the time when one needs to be particular about food consumption, especially intake of vitamins and minerals for a healthy life. But several studies have shown that adolescents’ intake of important nutrients, as well as their performance in standard physical fitness tests, have fallen in recent years.
Because nutrition and fitness are intertwined — for example, iron forms part of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to muscles, and antioxidants such as vitamin C aid in rebuilding damage after intense training — these two findings could be related, the Journal of Applied Physiology reports. Luis Gracia-Marco of the
University of Zaragoza, Spain, and colleagues, have found that adolescents’ blood levels of various micronutrients are correlated with how well they performed in certain physical fitness tests. Gracia-Marco and colleagues relied on data from a larger, longterm research project known as the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescents
Cross-Sectional Study. Part of this study, involved thousands of volunteers aged between 12.5 and 17.5 years in cities across Europe. Researchers found that blood levels of certain micronutrients were closely connected with the performance in fitness tests. For cardiorespiratory fitness, concentrations of haemoglobin,
retinol, and vitamin C in males and beta-carotene and vitamin D in females was linked with VO2max (peak oxygen uptake). For muscular fitness, concentrations of haemoglobin, betacarotene, retinol, and alpha-tocopherol in males and betacarotene and vitamin D in females was associated with performing better. IANS

Entertainment THE AGE OF INNOCENCE

very year, there’s at least one Telugu film featuring new comers which catches our attention and makes us wait for the film with bated breath. Going by the buzz which Hanu Raghavapudi’s debut film Andhala Rakshasi has created, it wouldn’t be entirely wrong to say that it might very well be the biggest surprise of the year so far. There have always been films which have entertained the audience, but quite rarely does a Telugu film remind you of that intoxicating smell just before the rains. The film is set in 1991, which Hanu Raghavapudi says is the age of innocence. We met the film’s lead cast — Naveen Chandra, Rahul Ravindran and Lavanya Tripathi to know what makes the film so irresistible. “There's a lot of yearning, longing and love because the film is set in a pre-liberalisation era. It was the age of innocence. Post globalisation, people’s outlook has changed a lot. Now, it's important how much money you earn, which brand of car you own and so on. The whole script would have changed had the story been set in present era,” Rahul says. For Lavanya, her role in Andhala Rakshasi was a once in a lifetime opportunity. “I was on cloud nine after I listened to the script. I could relate a lot to my character, (Midhuna) and it didn’t take me long to get into her shoes. Besides, it really helped that Hanu incorporated a lot of my body language into my character in the film. All three characters have so much power in them but still they don’t domi-

nate each other,” she says. Naveen Chandra, who plays Surya in the film, adds, “You have no clue how patient Lavanya was during the costume trials and she runs a lot in the film. I don’t think any other heroine has run so much, sometimes even bare foot, in a film.” All three of them burst into laughter and for a while, they try to remind each other of several incidents on the sets of the film which they’ll cherish for a long time. “I didn’t speak much to Lavanya initially because I was shy. It was tough initially because my character Surya is supposed to be extremely vibrant in the film,” Naveen says. So, how did he come over it? “Hanu asked me to travel in local buses and go to places where a lot of women buy clothes to observe their mannerisms. After two weeks, he made me stay in a flat which was completely covered with posters of Midhuna. I wrote three quotes ‘Surya Loves Midhuna’, ‘Surya Lives for Midhuna’, ‘Surya Dies for Midhuna’ and after few days I got so much into my character that the rest of the shooting was a breeze,” Naveen recalls. “Oye…don’t forget that incident when you freaked me out completely,” Lavanya interrupts.
“Oh…wait. What’s this incident? I didn’t know this,” Rahul shares her excitement. So what happened? “It was Hanu’s idea to make me overcome my shyness when I am acting with Lavanya. One night, he asked me to go knock on her door and enact a scene with all my emotions. She had no clue that this was all part of a plan and before she could say something, I told all my dialogues. Thank God Hanu was right around the corner to save me, otherwise Lavanya would have complained that I had gone bonkers,” Naveen adds. The film has been described as a love story between the sun, the moon and the earth. However, Rahul assures us that there’s no confusion. “The story is not driven by that concept, but the characters are. Surya, like the Sun, needs no permission to go where he wants and there’s a blast of energy when he’s around. My character, Gautham is like the moon. He’s very pleasant, calm and never tells you what he feels. He just reflects what the others feel. Midhuna is like the girl-next-door. She’s still a child at heart. Like gravity, she attracts people towards her. There’s lot of life in her and anyone can fall in love with her,” Rahul signs off.
Everyone’s talking about Hanu Raghavapudi’s debut film Andhala Rakshasi these days. Its lead actors – Naveen, Rahul and Lavanya tell us more about the film, which Hanu says is a love story between the sun, the earth and the moon.

Named after the French bread, it is carried under the arm. There are innumerable possibilities in variations and with its basic shape form there is a slim scope for comparison of one design with another. Baguette’s success story, Silvia Fendi created a collection of ten bags in 10 pure colours. Plus a Baguette in white canvas that came with a set of Pantone colouring pens to allow the owner to personalise the bag herself and to inspire the hidden artist. Another unique variation came with the ‘Lisio Baguette’ collection which was made using luxurious materials like velvet, brocades and silk produced through the Lisio Foundation traditional techniques that date back to Renaissance. Some of the patterns created exclusively for Fendi were so complex to weave that the Lisio Foundation could not produce more than four centimeters a day. For example the silk thread of the “Schönbrunn Soul” style was woven with ostrich and peacock feathers, sixty of them for each metre of fabric, with a final look similar to velvet. The Lisio collection included Baguettes inspired by Botticelli’s still life paintings from the XVI century, gothic novels, and animals showcasing the same technical virtuosity as its inspirations. There was also an Artists’ collaboration with the Baguette. World renowned artists as Tom Sachs, Jeff Koons, Francesco Vezzoli, Loris Cecchini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Subodh Gupta Mark Bradford, Delia Brown, Will Cotton, Rachel Feinstein, Francesca Gabbiani, Karen Kimmel, Terence Koh, Jorge Pardo, agreed to work with specially designed “blank slate” canvas baguettes created by Silvia Fendi to raise funds for Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s “Arts for NexGen”, the nation’s only free youth membership program. The result was a unique depiction by the artists’ painted/sketched onto the Baguette. Encapsulating this rich history of one bag form, the fashion house celebrates 15 years this year. The Fendi Baguette is transformed into a wonderfully illustrated book that’s takes the reader through a story of craftsmanship, artisanship, connoisseurship, and design. Published by Rizzoli, the Fendi Baguette book is a hefty collation of 250 full colour photos of selected designs. The book is distinguished into three sections — the seasonal best picks of the Baguette designs, the Lisio Baguette and the special Artists designed Baguettes. Available to purchase from Fendi boutiques worldwide the FENDI BAGUETTE book retails for `6,000. For more information, log onto baguette.fendi.com.

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Saori wrestles way to gold Japan's Saori Yoshida won a third Olympic 55kg women's freestyle wrestling title when she defeated Canada’s Tonya Lynn Verbeek. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse LONDON: Japan's Saori Yoshida won a third Olympic 55kg women's freestyle wrestling title on Thursday and celebrated by performing a cartwheel and grappling with her coach. She defeated Canada's Tonya Verbeek, bronze medallist in Beijing four years ago and her beaten opponent in the inaugural 2004 final in Athens, in the gold medal match. A day after Japan's Kaori Icho completed a hat-trick of Olympic 63kg golds, and compatriot Hitori Obama became the 48kg champion, Yoshida's success saw Japan take three of the four women's wrestling titles on offer. Yoshida dumped Verbeek on her back for a three-point score in the open-

ing period and sealed victory with a takedown in the second, upheld despite a Canadian challenge. An elated Yoshida — roared on by chants of "Saori, Saori" from the massed ranks of Japanese fans — celebrated
with a cartwheel, lifted up the Japan team wresting coach, before flipping him onto the mat and then carrying him on her shoulders. Yoshida's conclusive win rounded off a Games where she didn't concede a point.
It also meant Yoshida, who has also won nine world championships, had equalled the record of 12 world-level titles held by Russia's threetime Olympic Greco-Roman gold medal winner Alexander Karelin. But as for going on to the next Olympic Games, in Rio in 2016, Yoshida said: "It will take some time before I decide whether I will defend my title. I feel so happy and this special stage is so special and so I am so happy to have won the gold medal." Verbeek, 35 next week, said: "One call could have changed things a bit, but ultimately I'm happy for what I have done for Canada." The tone for extravagant celebration had already by Colombia's Jackeline Renteria Castillo as she beat Tetyana Lazareva for a second consecutive bronze to follow her one in Beijing.

Having defeated Ochigava in May for her most recent world crown, the 26-year-old Taylor added the Olympic title to a resume that also includes the European title. Before the final, ex-world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis described Taylor as the best boxer he has ever seen, adding he would expect her to beat most men in the ring and the Olympic champion took the compliment with grace. "I'm not sure I would want to get in the ring with (world lightweight champion Vasyl) Lomachenko," she laughed. "But seriously, it's a huge compliment for women's boxing and a great advert for the sport. I wanted everyone to see how great women's boxing is, this is just the start for the sport and I can't wait to see what it will be like in four more years. TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Hungary's Eva Risztov won a gripping Olympic women's swimming marathon by just 0.4 seconds at London's Hyde Park on Thursday. The 26-year-old led for much of the 10km race in the Serpentine lake but she finished only marginally ahead of America's Haley Anderson with a winning time of 1hr 57min 38.2sec. Italy's Martina Grimaldi took bronze and home favourite Keri-Anne Payne was fourth, with the top four separated by just four seconds.
Hungary's Eva Risztov won a gripping women's swimming marathon ahead of America's Haley Anderson by just 0.4 sec. Risztov, 26, competed in the pool at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics before retiring in 2005, only to return to the sport as a marathon specialist in 2009. "I saw that Haley was coming, but I had enough energy in reserve to reach the finish," said Risztov. "It is really hard to take in but in a few hours I will be much more happy because I'm really, really, really tired now." Risztov succeeded Russia's Larisa Ilchenko, who won the inaugural women's event in Beijing four years ago but was not competing in London. Great Britain's Payne, a silver medallist in Beijing, was bidding to win a first swimming gold medal of the Games for the host nation but finished off the podium. "I tried absolutely everything I could," said a tearful Payne. "It didn't quite go the way I was hoping for it to go, but I can't be upset with it. Whatever's meant to be is meant to be, and I guess I was meant to be fourth today." The race began beneath bright sunshine, as a huge crowd descended upon Hyde Park to cheer on Payne. AFP
LONDON: China's Chen Ruolin was in a class of her own on Thursday, defending her women's Olympic 10m platform diving crown in dominating style to claim her second gold medal at the London Games. The Chinese star peeled off five fantastic dives to score 422.30 points and beat her nearest rival by 55.8 points in the most convincing victory in the seven diving events so far at the Aquatics Centre. Australia's Brittany Broben took silver with 366.50 and Pandelela Rinong claimed the bronze with 359.20 to give Malaysia a first ever Olympic diving medal. It was China's sixth gold diving medal in London out of seven events. The only dent in China's dominance so far was Russian Ilya Zakharov's triumph in Tuesday's men's 3m springboard ahead of both Qin Kai and defending champion He Chong, which ended China's hopes of sweeping all eight golds. "I'm very relaxed. It's like it's not the Olympic Games. I feel no high pressure, I'm relaxed," Chen said, with the Chinese flag draped around her shoulders. I feel very pleased to have another gold medal for China." It was 19-year-old Chen's fourth

Bolt reignites Lewis feud after double
LONDON: This was it. The race that would decide whether Usain Bolt, the fastest man the world has ever seen, would become a legend — according to the Jamaican sprint star himself. And the 25-year-old delivered in his own inimitable style, lighting up the London 2012 Games once again to fulfil his own prophecy. Taking the race in 19.32sec, Bolt had the Olympic Stadium crowd on their feet to hail the track king. The 80,000 spectators were already in party mood before the showdown, with Mexican waves sweeping round the arena as
Sprint king Usain Bolt said he had lost all respect for Carl Lewis after the US sprint legend restated his concerns over the toughness of Jamaica’s drug-testing policy. Speaking after winning the 200m at the London Olympics to seal a second consecutive sprint double, Bolt said he held sprint icon Jesse Owens in high regard but said Lewis was merely attention-seeking. “For me Jesse Owens I have a lot of respect for. He’s a great athlete. He has done great things for his country.” he added.

metres beyond the sandpit and the myriad twinkling camera flashes told the tale that Bolt had entered the building. The sun having set 20 minutes before, the stadium’s crown of triangular floodlights were now on full beam. Pounding strings told the stadium it was 8:55 pm — showtime. Introduced to the crowd, Christophe Lemaitre wiped his lips, blinked and stared at the floor. Alex Quinonez shook his head at the camera. Yohan Blake lived up to his nickname of ‘The Beast’, performing his scary fingers routine, like an extra from Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Churandy Martina wagged his finger at the camera and gave
himself a quick round of applause. Wallace Spearmon pointed to the USA written across his chest. Then came Bolt. He waved his hand like a royal on autopilot and gave a double finger point down the barrel of the camera as the decibel level went through the roof. Compatriot Warren Weir rubbed his hands together and Anaso Jobodwana, in the outside lane, just looked nervous. The thudding sound of a heartbeat played over the speakers. Turning to look at the clock and putting his finger to his lips as he crossed the line, Bolt ran beyond the thick white stripe and into realm of legends, slapping his chest as he went.
LONDON: Ashton Eaton of the United States produced a totally dominant performance over two gruelling days to claim the Olympic decathlon gold medal on Thursday. The world record holder amassed 8,869 points in the 10discipline event, to finish 198pts ahead of team-mate and world champion Trey Hardee (8,671), with Cuba’s Leonel Suarez claiming bronze (8,523). Eaton’s total was the second best in Olympic history behind the 8,893pts notched up by Roman Sebrle in 2004. I’m still not able. I have unforgettable memories of 2008. I continue recovering,” the ATP number three tweeted. The event, last major tune-up before the August 27 start of the US Open, was the third straight summer pullout for Nadal, who also missed the Olympics and this week’s Masters 1000 in Toronto. I came in today, saw the physios, they did some work on it, and it’s still a bit sore. “I did a little warmup on the bike to try it out and it was still
sore. I had to make a decision as to what I was going to do. “I spoke with the guys and decided the best thing was to rest and try and make sure I can actually let my body kind of adjust to the surface.” Murray said that with his travelling physio on hand, he feels he has a chance to be fit before the Cincinnati start.
