ired of using horseshoes, amulets, rings or Feng Shui? Hyderabadis now have a somewhat fresh but odd remedy for those running out of luck — setting a raven free from captivity! It’s one of the many crowded lanes in the Old City, obscurely called Murgi Chowk where you can get this ravens. “On an average we get a couple of dozen people from the City and neigbhouring districts seeking this short-cut to luck and wellbeing. are kept in cages. However, bird lovers in the City are flabbergasted at the way the birds are kept. “The birds are kept in cages for days together and they end up very weak. When they are finally released they can barely fly. Many of them die when they are released. The ones that survive are invariably captured by the traders and caged again and the whole cycle repeats,” said, Mahesh Agarwal, general secretarty, Sahyog Organisation. But crow-traders are making money and would not buy this argument. “Earlier, I used to sell sparrows and parrots. I never sold crows as they are not generally

It is a trade that has been going on for nearly a century in Hyderabad and it continues to flourish. And authorities claim they are handicapped. Birds are caught by the dozen while they are still chicks and are transported over long distances in pathetic conditions. For every 10 birds that reach the market, eight die. Unfortunately, neither the government nor the NGOs can say who feed them to the market.

n a crime most heinous that exposes crass ignorance in masses about basic facts of life, a man burnt his wife alive for delivering only girls. He has been arrested. Shahana was barely 19 when she was given in marriage to Qamaruddin, 25, a carpenter. He lived with his mother at Ziaguda under the Kulsumpura police station limits. In 10 years the couple had six children. The woman was not only made to deliver almost every year she was also mentally and physically tortured by Qamaruddin and his mother for delivering only girls. Describing the cruelty meted out on a hapless woman, Inspector Kiran Kumar of Kulsumpura police station said she was accused of being wicked, and lately, Qamaruddin used to come drunk at night and start abusing and beating his wife in front of the kids and mother. Qamaruddin’s mother was hand in glove with her son in blaming Shahana, police said. Two weeks ago Qamaruddin came drunk and as usual picked up a quarrel with Shahana and after a while, he dragged her

to the room and in front of the wailing daughter Zoha, 9, he poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. The horrified kid ran out shrieking for help. When neighbours came out and enquired what was going on, Qamaruddin coolly said, “Mein usko mar ja bolke darwaja bandh kar diya” (I told her to die and locked the door). It was the neighbours who broke open the door and conveyed her to hospital but the woman had been burnt so badly that she could not be saved. More tragic, she suffered hell for one week before dying on Tuesday. Fearing arrests, Qamaruddin’s mother who accompanied her daughterin-law fled. Syed Ali, father of Shahana, was inconsolable. When Postnoon met the man, he was still unable to speak coherently, saying he will die soon of his sin of not saving his daughter. Shahan’s brother Syed Wajid told this reporter that she was being tortured for the past three years. “But what can we do? They already have six children and we have been feeding the kids though we are poor. We were praying for good sense in that man.” Meanwhile people in Ziaguda are so enraged that they are demanding capital punishment for the man and his mother.

When both of them realise the truth, it becomes difficult for them to stand each other. A series of encounters follow and they end up falling in and out of love. Sudheer Babu makes a confident debut. SMS is good fun! Movie: SMS Cast: Sudheer Babu, Regina Music Director: Selva Ganesh Director: Tatineni Satya Rating: good in his mass role and his dance and fight sequences are quite impressive. However, his dubbing could have been a lot better. On the other hand, Regina brightens up the screen with her energy. She’s completely at ease in her role as Shruti. There are plenty of scenes in the film where both of them are at each other’s throats.

Tatineni Satya does a good job in capturing the contrast of personalities of the lead pair. Dialogues are really good throughout the film. Selva Ganesh’s music and background score are quite pleasant to the ears. While the film gets the emotion and conflict between the characters reasonably well, the film drags a bit in the second half. Tatineni Satya gets the casting right. There’s Veera Krishna and Rohini in supporting roles and Tagubothu Ramesh does the honours in the film’s climax. SMS is a good love story with an ample dose of comedy, romance and sentiment. It’s fun watching people fight and falling in love.

Hyper Local GHMC to pay more lawyer fees Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

T

he budget for legal fee in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has gone up by over 150 per cent in the last two years. This is a phenomenal increase by any measure. The amount which stood at `43.42 lakh during 2010-11 fiscal have now reached to `1.15 crore in the budget estimates of upcoming fiscal for 2012-13. The reason for this is the increase and accumulation of number cases against the corporation in recent times. The corporation currently has a total of 400 cases pending in various courts of Hyderabad including High Court. According to officials of the corporation, most of these cases pertain to building permissions and building constructions. The town planning department of the corporation deals with the responsibilities of supervision, permission and rejection of application related to building constructions. Additional commissioner (Administration and Legal) P Sai Kumar told Postnoon that most of these cases involved litigation on status of buildings viz-a-viz irregularities and deviations. Apart from these cases, the corporation also received notices from various courts viz. civil and criminal courts and statutory bodies like Lokayukta on various issues on a regular basis. The officials of the corporation are saying that increase in the number of cases forced the corporation to spend an increased amount towards payment of legal fee in the budget estimates. In the coming days, the number of cases are likely to go up as the corporation is planning to crack the whip on property tax defaulters by undertaking proper assessment of under assessed and unassessed properties to increase its income and reach its target.

T

he Telugu Desam Party is gearing up to grill the Congress government in the upcoming budget session of the Assembly with a slew of issues including liquor scam, scrapping of Polavaram tenders, sand quarrying scam and the ongoing CBI cases. The alleged involvement of the minister for Excise Mopidevi Venkatramana and his son in the liquor syndicates scam, the intraparty dissidence is also likely to put Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in a tight spot. Senior TDP leader Erabelli Dayakar Rao said that TDP would not allow the government to shirk responsibility. The scams of liquor, mining, villas and land allotments would rock the House in the session, he

said. The budget session will commence on February 13 with the customary address of the joint session of the Assembly and the Council by the Governor. BJP legislator E Lakshminarayna said that they would not spare the government on issues. Corruption will be highlighted. His party would press for a resolution on separate Telangana. The Kiran Kumar Reddy government is presenting the budget when the State is passing through a severe financial crisis owing to agitations. TRS leader Harish Rao said that the government would have to face the ire of their MLAs and they would press for a resolution. The government will have to explain various scams. Meanwhile speaker N Manohar is yet to take a decision on axing the 17 MLAs who defied the ruling party’s whip during the no-confidence motion. He may take a decision before the commencement of House.

IN OTHER NEWS CBI raids Aurobindo Pharma premises CBI sleuths are conducting a search on the premises of Aurobindo Pharma, at some of its factories and other facilities. The teams are conducting the searches at Polepally SEZ, and in Jeedimetla and Bachupalli. It may be recalled that the company representatives were questioned in cases against YS Jaganmohan Reddy. Incidentally, the company’s board is slated to meet on Friday for its third quarter results.

t is a classic case of how our elected representatives treat the platform — Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation — to debate on public grievances and address them. The Thursday’s ninth special general body meeting to approve the budget of the corporation stood as a classic example of this. Barring six Majlis MLAs, one nominated MLA of Anglo-Indian community and two MLCs, most of the MPs, MLAs and MLCs belonging to various political parties were conspicuous by their absence. The list also include two cabinet ministers from Hyderabad — Labour minister D Nagender and Marketing and Warehousing minister M Mukesh Goud — among the absentees. Apart from 155 corporators including five members, GHMC consists of a total of 63 ex-officio members bringing the total number of members to 218 in the council. TDP floor leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy, while criticising the absence of Cabinet ministers and MPs, asked the Mayor to postpone the meeting and reconvene in their presence. Speaking to Postnoon the TDP floor leader alleged that the leaders had scant regard for the residents of GHMC and it was evident from their attitude. “The Ministers, MPs and MLAs should have attended the meeting. If they had come, they would have known the problems being faced by their own residents,” he said. Senior Congress MLC MS Prabhakar, who was present, said that since the agenda was confined to budget approval and not public problems, many of the MLAs and MPs could not attend the meeting.

Some 30odd colleges from Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Chennai and various parts of Andhra Pradesh participated in the event. India unveiled

Khurshid censured

NEW DELHI: In an embarrassment to the Congress during the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission on Thursday censured law minister Salman Khurshid for his 9 per cent job quota promise to minorities and said that as a minister he had the responsibility of ensuring the model code of conduct in “letter and spirit”.

TEA-TIME

In its 15-page order, the commission said that Khurshid had violated the code of conduct by making a promise of 9 per cent quota from within the 27 per cent quota for OBCs and rejected his argument that there was no appeal or intent to secure votes on the basis of religion, caste or creed. “The Commission, therefore, expresses its deep anguish and disappointment... the commission has come to the conclusion that the respondent made a promise to a targeted group of the electorate. In its indictment of Khurshid, the commission also rejected his party’s contention that the promise was made by Khurshid not as a minister but as a Congress leader. IANS

Mum flings newborn from moving vehicle DUNGARPUR: Upset over the birth of a girl, a woman flung the baby out of an ambulance in Rajasthan when she was being taken to her house from a health centre after delivery, police said on Thursday. The baby survived and is stable. The woman, identified as Madhu, delivered a baby girl Wednesday at a primary health centre in Aspur village of Dungarpur district, some 550km from Jaipur. “An ambulance was taking her and the new-born child to her house in Talera village on Wednesday evening when she threw the baby out of the window at a turn when the vehicle slowed down. The baby landed in some bushes but survived,” said a police officer. Some villagers spotted the child and informed the health centre. “The information was forwarded to the same ambulance,” said the officer.

The ambulance staff picked up the baby and brought her to the primary health centre, where doctors realised that she could be Madhu’s daughter. “Madhu’s husband was contacted on Thursday morning and he confirmed that the baby was his daughter,” said the officer. The police said they are yet to file a case against the mother. “Statements of the couple, health centre, ambulance staff and villagers who spotted the baby are being taken,” the officer said. IANS

Vigilance raids DMK minister’s houses CHENNAI: Vigilance officials today conducted raids at premises belonging to former DMK minister KR Periyakaruppan across Tamil Nadu in connection with a disproportionate assets case. Used in personal vendettas or business disputes, acid attacks have become an increasingly common way over the past decade of settling scores in Uganda

THE SCARS OF LIFE Max Delaney

KAMPALA: Outside the burns ward of Kampala’s Mulago hospital, Darlison Kobusingye gingerly adjusts the headscarf she uses to cover the worst of the scars patterning the right side of her face. She’s one of the latest victims of a spike in acid attacks in Uganda, where criminals have turned to the cheap liquid as a cruel means of attack for punishment or for revenge. Her husband Joseph, a local councillor, lies inside the packed ward, swathed in bandages and barely able to move for the pain, as he struggles to recover after being attacked along with his wife last month. “We were sitting outside the small shop we own in our village when an attacker threw acid

over us and then disappeared,” says Kobusingye, 24. Used in personal vendettas or business disputes, acid attacks have become an increasingly common way over the past decade of settling scores in Uganda. Doctors at Mulago said the number of cases more than doubled in the December holiday period, and local media reported over 40 attack victims had been admitted to hospitals in Kampala. “Every festive season we see an increase in the number of victims we receive,” says Robert Ssentongo, a senior plastic surgeon at Mulago hospital, where some victims require extensive surgery, placing additional burdens on already-stretched medical resources. Although police are yet to arrest anyone, Kobusingye said she suspects her husband’s ex-wife was behind the attack. “We had read about these sort of attacks before in the newspapers but we had never experienced anything like it in our village,” said Kobusingye, a mother of one. Sociologists suggest the growth in such attacks could be due to a collapse of trust in the police or legal system to handle disputes, along with a wider breakdown of traditional family structures as people flock to the cities.

“The shift away from traditional values and the inadequacies in the country’s institutions is affecting the way people respond to the problems and disputes,” said Peter Atekyezera, a sociology professor at Kampala’s Makerere University. The acid used in attacks is often readily available at places like petrol stations, including that used in car batteries. The impact of an attack on the victims’ lives is immense, said Prudence Komujinya, a co-founder of the Acid Survivors Foundation Uganda. “It is really, really challenging physically, socially, economically and psychologically, as survivors with disfigurements are often stigmatised by society,” said Komujinya, herself a survivor of an acid attack. While police and the judiciary had grown better at dealing with acid attack cases, calls for new laws to restrict access to potentially harmful chemicals have not produced results, she said. As for the victims now battling for survival in the burns ward of Mulago hospital, Komujinya said that even with the support of families and friends they will face a long struggle to rebuild their lives. “It is a long journey to try and recover,” she said. “A lifetime journey.”

NAIROBI: Until a new antihomosexuality bill caused a wave of homophobia in Uganda, John and Paul could hold hands in the streets of the capital Kampala and kiss in night clubs. Then the nightmare started — people began insulting and then assaulting them, and then they had to run away to Kenya. The couple have been in Nairobi since May of last year. Like other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, they came to this urban jungle seeking anonymity, explained the official running a programme that looks after these refugees. His organisation, which last year alone looked after 67 LGBT cases in Kenya, did not want to be

named for fear of endangering its refugees. Some have fled a strict application of Islamic law in Somalia, others are running from general sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo and yet others have fled a climate of growing hostility elsewhere in east Africa. But worse was to come. A screaming tabloid headline encouraged its readers to “hang” homosexuals and in October 2010 published the names, photos and addresses of more than 20 gays, including those of the couple. “People started disappearing,” said John, who was beaten up several times. Then Paul was attacked. “I was watching a film when I

heard a lot of noise,” said the well-built 24-year-old. “People had broken into my place, armed with stones, sticks and machetes.” Paul owes his life to the intervention of the police, who however immediately jailed him. “I was physically abused, beaten, bleeding from everywhere,” he recounted with difficulty. LGBT refugees are in a particularly difficult position, said the official from the programme that helps them. They cannot return home where their lives are in danger. Nor can they settle in Kenya, where refugees are not allowed to work and where homosexuality is also illegal. The only solution is often to head to a third country.

GLOBE AT A GLANCE 14 dead in Peru floods due to torrential rains

DAMASCUS: Regime forces launched a new blitz on the Syrian city of Homs on Thursday, killing more than 50 people, activists said, as the UN weighed a joint mission with the Arab League to end the violence. Shelling erupted at daybreak, killing 53 civilians in the besieged central city and burning several bodies beyond recognition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Troops trying to crush opponents of President Bashar alAssad have killed at least 400 people in a relentless six-day onslaught on Homs, opposition activists say. “The shells are raining down on us and regime forces are using heavy artillery,” said Ali Hazuri, a doctor in the Baba Amr district reached by telephone from Beirut. Omar Shaker, an activist in Baba Amr also reached by phone, added that residents were hiding on ground floors as there were no underground shelters.

Thousands of people were left homeless, officials said Thursday. The San Martin province has been the hardest hit. Rains have caused rivers to overflow. According to Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesman, the visit only focused on bilateral relations between Pakistan and the Gulf. “A misconception was created that he had a plan to hold a meeting with Taliban,” Xinhua quoted the spokesman. ousted President Mohamed Nasheed appealed on Thursday to the world community to help restore democracy in his country, claiming that he was toppled by a small group of police officers and police and the military were brutally suppressing people. Nasheed resigned on Tuesday amid protests over detention of a judge and was replaced by Mohamed Waheed. Talking to a news channel from an undisclosed location, Nasheed said he now feared for his life and safety of his family. “They want to arrest me and the situation is turning worse,” he said. FBI file questions Steve Jobs’ honesty

he FBI files of Steve Jobs have been released, showing a man who commanded respect as an innovator but was questioned on his honesty and morality. The file was prepared on the Apple founder as he was considered for a presidential appointment in 1991 during George HW Bush’s time in office. Documents also revealed that Jobs had been the victim of an extortive bomb threat in 1985. Jobs’ files note, too, his conversion to Buddhism and admissions of drug use. The documents were made public on Thursday through freedom of information laws, and posted to the FBI’s website. “Several individuals questioned Mr

MSat begins shopping Postnoon News

HYDERABAD:

Mahindra Satyam is going to acquire around 15 per cent stake in Dion Global Solution, a capital markets software provider, for an undisclosed amount, sources privy to the development told Postnoon. This is the first ever acquisition of strategic stake by Satyam Computer Services after Mahindra & Mahindra acquired it and salvaged the embattled IT bellwether from red. The company posted a net profit of `308 crore in the third quarter of the current fiscal. The acquisition of stake in a new company strengthens the claim of the management that it is back in black and paves the way for the company’s inorganic growth strategy. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) so as to enable MSat to acquire the stake. “We are extremely impressed by Dion’s ability to truly partner

CP Gurnani, CEO, MSat with its clients and top class management team. We are convinced that the Dion will become one of the foremost software solutions providers to capital markets and are keen on participating in it,” said CP Gurnani, CEO, Mahindra Satyam. Mahindra Satyam will

acquire the stake by way of fresh issue of equity shares, subject to regulatory and board approvals and satisfaction of customary closing conditions. Dion’s solutions capabilities and geographic reach will be enhanced by this partnership. “Combining the unique skills from both the companies will allow us to cooperate on developing new innovative business focused solutions for all tiers of the financial services industry, including common clients,” said Raiph J Horne, managing director and Global CEO, Dion. Dion has a portfolio of solutions and services for capital markets covering portfolio management, trading, settlement, risk management, analytics, and treasury and research services. It currently services over 660 clients in 62 countries. The proceeds from the investment under consideration will be utilised by Dion to further enhance its offerings and its geographic reach.

Quality of vaccines cause of concern HYDERABAD: The research for Malaria vaccine is in the process and the product may come out very soon. The vaccines will also be available for HIV, TB and Dengue in distant future. The quality of Indian manufacturing is crucial for the world. Vaccines are the most profitable products in the pharmaceutical industry, said Seth Berkley, Chief Executive Officer, GAVI Alliance, Geneva. Though Indian companies produce vaccines in large quantities and at affordable prices, the quality of vaccines made by some manufacturers was becoming a cause of worry, GAVI Alliance CEO Dr Seth Berkley

said here on Thursday. “India companies are coming out on their own and they are making more and more of the global market. Though, we have seen some issues over quality in some companies in India and some companies have been delisted by the WHO. Making sure of quality is absolutely critical for vaccines,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the ninth edition of three-day BioAsia, the annual global bio business forum, that began here this evening. GAVI or Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation is engaged in funding vaccines for children in the world’s 70 poorest

countries. Stating that India’s strong vaccine manufacturing capacity and quality was essential to the world and to the GAVI Alliance, he further said “It’s clear that Indian manufacturers can produce vaccines that need high quality standards, appropriate to specific countries standards and at sustainable prices through reliable supplies.” The exports of India in pharmaceuticals have reached `50,000 crore. Editorials SYRIA IS A BATTLE we need to fight

I

n Homs a massacre is afoot, and it’s beginning to verge on genocide. The US, still nursing wounds from an ill-fated engagement in Iraq and smarting from the blows inflicted in Afghanistan is adamant that Syrian soil will not bear the brunt of American tank tracks. Nato continues to fear a big chill from Russia and China while the UK’s sabre-rattling is nothing more than a lot of noise. The UN, as usual, has proved yet again that it is impotent to stop mass killings, and is swiftly approaching the nadir it reached after the Rwandan genocide. Arming Syrian rebels is an option, but Assad is no Gaddafi, and he still has a lot of support in the country, and like it or not, from a large part of the armed forces. Arming the opposition may only scale-up the carnage. Military intervention from the West is increasingly becoming the only option available. And while Israel has been muttering (a fallout of its US-held leash on Iran) it must stay out of this fight. While Iraq was an unnecessary war, Syria may well become the one battle the world needs to fight.

WHY WE LOVE The Cup of Nations

T

he Cup of Nations has cast the spotlight on what is arguably the most talented footballing continent in the world. With the likes of Didier Drogba showcasing their supreme skill, it proves that Africa can come together under the flag of sport. All the continent needs to do now is to invest in this unity, and the next decade may truly belong to the place from whence man sprung.

A positive approach resurrects paper tigers Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur

T

he Paper Tigers finally roared Down Under to register their first away win in 16 games. Though it was a T20 game, the manner of the victory was impressive and thoroughly professional. And surprisingly, it was the fielding, which won India the game. This is indeed refreshing to watch after the pathetic performance in the Test series. Things changed dramatically. Gone were the drooping shoulders, general lethargy and the lack of initiative. This was a new India on the field. There was positive approach everywhere from chasing the ball around to taking sharp singles. Undoubtedly, the infusion of younger players went a long way in ensuring that. Even skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was a changed man. All those inventiveness was back, the field placements and bowling changes were excellent. The first T20 match was a repetition of what had gone by earlier. The Australians, with a completely new team and captain, just sped away to victory. India’s reputation was becoming derisive and Australians began to mock once more. It prompted Brett Lee to say that India had lost their mental edge. That would have worked with the old boys who may be back home now licking their wounds. But the new generation took the defeat in their stride and improved by leaps and bounds. Three key factors in the change of attitude were the return of Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Praveen Kumar. Raina may not have clicked with the bat but his livewire fielding was a treat to watch. Jadeja is a key player in the shorter version because of his all-round abilities. He is the ideal number seven, willing to give it a whack or stay steady according to the requirements. His left-arm spin looks innocuous but he has the habit of keeping down the runs and taking wickets as well. He was rightfully the man of the match and it was his fielding and throwing, which won

Murder plot story

Yesterday at the Safilguda railway crossing an Army truck jumped the queue and overtook about 10 vehicles and in the process blocked the entire traffic. When I questioned him, the driver verbally abused me and would have manhandled me if it was not for the intervention of passersby. This kind of behaviour of members of our armed forces, who are supposed to protect us from external threats, is not acceptable. Men in defence services should not become a threat to common citizens of our great nation.

I read your crime story about how the woman and her lover were caught trying to kill her husband. I felt more sad than angry because it clearly isn't anyone's fault. The family became a victim of circumstances. The husband did not get the help he needed and so he resorted to violence and alcohol and the wife fed up because of this, left him. I hope the trial isn't long and enduring as it may further affect the children. The story did not mention anything about the kids. Are they ok?

Though he lacks pace, he makes it up with his accuracy and ability to swing the ball on length both ways. With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli already dynamic in the field, India’s 20-yard circle looked menacing. The big test is whether India will be able to carry forward this positive development. The timing of the victory was just right. With the One-day tri-series now under way and India doing well, they need to just

build on the confidence and believe in themselves. Much will depend on how Dhoni leads the team. In the earlier part of the tour, he was totally helpless and did nothing to motivate or change the situation. The robot-like captaincy set the general tone for the defeats. But Dhoni was charged up after the victory. He also admitted that he had not read the newspapers during the tour to learn about the criticism heaped upon him. It would be in India’s interest if room service continues not to keep papers outside Dhoni’s door.

Passport office woes

Budget Valentine

I am a regular reader of your paper. I particularly appreciate the fact that Postnoon has been able to carve a niche for itself and has been able to distinguish itself from the regular dailies. I wanted to bring to your notice that the passport office in the city is rife with corruption, red-tapism, inefficiency and insolence. In my personal experience is any indication, I can tell you that no citizen here can go to the PO and get their work done in a single trip, even if you have all the documents required. I request your team to please do an article on this. Shakuntala Devi Khairatabad

This is in regard to your ongoing reports about the Valentine’s Day. I was ignoring the previous reports but yesterday when I had a glance over it, I was captivated. The voice of my education said, I should condemn it, because we have falsely adopted the Western culture of celebrating the V-Day and practice as if it is our own. The report suggests how to manage budget on a date, while I was reading it, I was wondering how a poor daily wage earner tries to manage a hundred rupee note for his livelihood. ut what if that smile is frag toothed, crooked or flaunts ugly yellowstained teeth? How often have you made fun of a friend’s gap-toothed smile or probably turned away in disgust on seeing someone flash stained teeth? A perfect smile is on everyone’s wishlist. After all it is the smile that most people are drawn to. Think of all the celebs with those dazzling smiles that people lust after — be it a Jessica Alba, Hugh Jackman, Madhuri Dixit or Abhay Deol. A dazzling smile can light up anyone’s face and of course, it’s contagious. While most of us are blessed with a set of perfect teeth, lifestyle habits and sometimes the set of our jaw

can play party poopers and ruin that otherwise flawless smile. “For instance, people who have the habit of pushing against their teeth with their tongues or suck their thumbs risk having their teeth jutting out. The alignment of teeth could also be ruined due to hereditary factors or bonerelated issues,” says Dr Hajera Sultana, dental surgeon at Salahuddin’s Dental Clinic. “Discolouration of the teeth could occur due to habits like smoking, chewing on tobacco or in a lot of cases fluorosis (a common occurrence in India since water here has a higher fluoride content). These can cause the teeth to either yellow or have spots over them,” says Dr MP Singh, prosthodontist and implantologist at Pearly Teeth Super Speciality Dental Hospital. Dentists across the City receive several requests for smile corrections. “I usually see a lot of young adults, socialites and people who are in the public eye approach me for smile correction procedures. Laser bleaching is a very popular procedure people are now opting for to get rid of stained teeth,”

It’ll set you back by... Bleaching

metal: `15,000 to `20,000 n ceramic: `25,000 to `30,000 n aligners: `40,000 n

Note: All figures are approximate says Dr Singh. He adds that laser bleaching scores over regular bleaching as there is no erosion of teeth or sensitivity in this and the results are better.

But for those who want to flash their pearlies while keeping a watch on their budgets, home bleaching is a good option. “We give the patient trays that have the bleaching agent and they can wear this on alternate nights for around one or two weeks for whiter teeth. But for quicker and more permanent results bleaching in office is a better option,” says Dr Hajera. While in the case of fluorosis the staining cannot be removed permanently it can be effectively camouflaged by bleaching, crowns or veneers. However, it is alignment of the teeth that continues to bother several youngsters. “Orthodontic treatments like fitting braces for a prescribed period of time is advised in these cases. While metal braces may not be everyone’s cup of tea there are ceramic braces available in the market today that are virtually invisible, with only a thin metal wire showing. Aligners, another type of orthodontic treatment, are not visible at all and are a good bet for those who may be embarrassed by braces,” explains Dr Hajera.

My son has been passing blood in his stools for the last 2-3 months. Sometimes he also complains of pain in the anal region. He does not have any loose motions nor is he constipated. He used to pass hard stools more than 3-4 months back but was treated. A common cause of blood in the stools is fissure caused by constipation. Your child’s earlier history of constipation could have caused this to happen, we cannot rule that out. Usually in the case of fissure the stools are streaked with blood and there is a lot of pain during and after the passage of stools. A simple examination of his anus will give you the answer. Rectal polyps can also cause passage of fresh blood in the stools. Typically, there are few drops of fresh blood soon after the baby has passed a motion. Treating a rectal polyp is not difficult at all. You have to have your baby examined by a paediatric surgeon. (The writer is a paediatrician practising at Andromeda Centre. en wishing to acquire a higher sex drive can benefit by exposing their body to the sun's rays, as a study by Austrian scientists has found sunshine increases level of male sex hormone testosterone. According to the study at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, men with high blood vitamin D levels have significantly higher testosterone levels than men with less vitamin D, the Daily Express reported. Ninety per cent of the body's vitamin D is produced by the action of sunlight on the skin, say researchers, adding that sufficiently high levels of the vitamin have a “positive influence” on testosterone. Ad Brand, of the Sunlight Research Forum, in Holland, said, “Men who ensure that their body is at least sufficiently supplied with vitamin D are doing good for their testosterone levels and their libido.” IANS

Want to lose weight? Eat cake for breakfast, says study TEL AVIV: Those with a weakness for sweets can now include cookies and cake in a 600 calorie breakfast menu with some proteins and carbs to shed weight in a pleasurable way and also stay slim. Attempting to avoid sweets entirely can create a psychological addiction to these same foods in the long-term, explains Daniela Jakubowicz, professor at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine, who led the study. Over the course of a 32week-long study, participants who added dessert to their breakfast such as cookies, cake, or chocolate lost an average of 40 pounds more than a group that

avoided such foods, the journal Steroids reports. What’s more, they kept off the pounds longer. A meal in the morning provides energy for the day’s tasks, aids in brain functioning, and kick-starts the body’s metabolism, making it crucial for weight loss and maintenance, according to a Tel Aviv statement. And breakfast is the meal that most successfully regulates ghrelin, the hormone that increases hunger, explains Jakubowicz. While the level of ghrelin rises before every meal, it is suppressed most effectively at breakfast time.

These findings were based on 193 clinically obese, non-diabetic adults, who were randomly assigned to one of two diet groups with identical caloric intake, the men consumed 1,600 calories daily and the women 1,400. However, the first group was given a low carbohydrate diet including a small 300 calorie breakfast, and the second was given a 600 calorie breakfast high in protein and carbohydrates, always including a dessert item such as chocolate. Halfway through the study, participants in both groups had lost an average of 33 pounds per

person. But in the second half of the study, results differed drastically. The participants in the lowcarb group regained an average of 22 pounds each, but participants in the group with a larger breakfast lost another 15 pounds each. At the end of the 32 weeks, those who had consumed a 600 calorie breakfast had lost an average of 40 pounds more per person than their peers. Jakubowicz conducted the study with Julio Wainstein and Mona Boaz from Tel Aviv and Oren Froy of Hebrew University Jerusalem. IANS

Zinc-antibiotic saves kids with pneumonia CAPE TOWN: Respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, are the biggest killers of children who are under the age of five. But standard antibiotic therapy, given to children with zinc, improved their chances of surviving the infection and was more pronounced in case of HIV-infected children, a study reveals. In a trial, 350 children, aged six months to fiveyears-old, were treated with

standard antibiotics at Mulago Hospital, Uganda. Half of them were given zinc and the other half a placebo, the journal BMC Medicine reported. Uganda’s Makerere University researchers found that while there was no difference between zinc and placebo in the time to recover, the risk of death between the groups was very different, a university statement said. 4 per cent of the children

taking zinc died compared to 12 per cent without zinc. This means that an extra 8 out of 100 children could have been saved by zinc. James Tumwine, explains: “Zinc bolsters the immune system and zinc deficiency is rife in the developed and developing world.” IANS

My child is 6-months-old. There are various infant food products in the market, but if I want to give some home-made food, what type of food is advised? After six months it is essential to start additional foods apart from breast feeding, the growing child needs additional nutrients to meet his/her growth development The staple cereal of the family should be used to make the first food for an infant. Cereals like rice/wheat/ ragi etc can be used, it is always safe to start with rice, if your stable diet is rice. Porridge can be made with suji (semolina), broken wheat, atta (wheat flour) ground rice, ragi, millet etc, by using a little water or milk, Roasted flour of any cereal can be mixed with boiled water, sugar and a little fat to make the first complementary food for the baby. Adding sugar or jaggery and ghee or oil is important as it increases the energy value of the food. In the beginning the porridge could be made a little thinner but as the child grows older the consistency has to be thicker. A thick porridge is more nutritious than a thin one. In case a family cannot prepare the porridge for the infant separately, pieces of half chapatti could be soaked in half a cup of milk or boiled water, mashed properly and fed to the baby after adding sugar and fat. Soaked and mashed chapatti could be passed through a sieve so as to get a soft semi-solid food for the infant. Fruits like banana, papaya, chikoo, mango etc. could be given at this age in a mashed form. Slowly cooked rice/wheat, dal and vegetable can be introduced in soft cooked form and fed in semi-solid form, preparations like khichdi, dalia, suji kheer, upma, idli etc can be given, include protective foods like milk, curd, lassi, egg, fish and fruits and vegetables, they are also important to help in the healthy growth of infants. Green leafy vegetables, carrots, pumpkin and seasonal fruits like papaya, mango, chikoo and banana, are important to ensure that the child gets a good amount of vitamin A and iron. e forms one of the trio of the ShankarEhsaan-Loy group and has an array of songs and compositions to his credit. His foray into the world of music was not decided, but destined. Playing the veena at a very young age, Shankar Mahadevan’s musical successes were but natural. And it is this genius, which made him a part of the coveted Remember Shakti group — a group that boasts of none but the best musicians. And his forthcoming visit to Hyderabad as part of the group is being much talked about in the city. He relives his experiences with the band in an interview with Postnoon. “It’s an unforgettable dream. Imagine playing with maestros like Johnji, Zakirji, Mandolin Srinivasji and Selvaji. It’s like playing in heaven with the gods, and I feel truly blessed to be part of

this.” He believes his association with Remember Shakti is more than just his love for music. The musicians, according to him are ‘individuals par excellence and incomparable’. We ask him what he thinks of the music scene in the city and the musical inclination of the people here. “Hyderabad is one of my favorite cities. I am an absolute foodie and talking about Hyderabad reminds me of the Hyderabadi biryani. It is very tempting to think of the food here. On a serious note, Hyderabad is a city known for some great musicians. The culture and tradition of music is so rich here, and I think that the audience here understands and appreciates music. Naturally, it is a pleasure for me to perform in the city.” On whether he would compose music for a south-Indian film, Shankar gives us an interesting take. “I believe that music is an art form that is abstract in nature. It doesn’t

matter whether it comes from the north or the south. The basics are the same.” He adds, “What is a melody? Think about it. Technically, you are just putting a few frequencies and a few words together. And when you play it, and when one listens, it has to have an appealing effect.” On the philosophical aspect of music, Shankar says pensively, “If you want me to describe music in one word, it would be ‘friend’. And when you have music in your life you can never be lonely. It is like a companion whom you can talk to, interact with, think about, and create. And the last thing that matters to me is whether the friend is from the south or north. Shankar believes that there is a gamut of young musicians whose works are impressive. He believes that the country has and will produce great talents.

Because you are what you wear

ew York Fashion Week started off yesterday and kicks off the Fall-Winter 2013 season. For the designers, it is a stressful time. Not only do they have to ensure their collections are ready, they have to afford to rent a place, hire show producers, cast models, etc; this is part and parcel of every season’s trials. The biggest challenge after all this hard work and expense is will the right people show up to see it. An almost overwhelming number of participating designers forces editors to cull the number of shows they can physically attend. As do the buyers, agents, etc. Last season two new initiatives saw the dawn of a fashion-technology integration, KCD’s Digial Fashion Week and Style.com’s Video Fashion Week. Fashion and digital technology is not new. Prada has created fabulous season-specific teasers employing animation. Gareth Pugh’s religious iconography and dark philosophy has found a striking collaboration in filmmaker Ruth Hogben’s vision. Several fashion icons have live-streamed their shows on their websites. The digital fashion week concepts however, differ in one respect. They have not been created as a platform to reach a mass customer base. Instead their focus is to reach the fashion industry drivers namely, editors, buyers and other influencers. Given the frantic schedules of these decision makers, with over 300 shows on their itinerary, it is virtually impossible for a newbie designer to attract any of them to his shows. What this allows is the ease to access the shows online, at their leisure without the pressure. In fact KCD’s Digital Fashion Week attempts to retain almost all the elements of a live runway show, from exclusivity via invitations to

DIGITAL FASHION PICKING UP?

18

There is no denying the reach of a digital platform. It can be a great launch vehicle as well. However, fashion has to be felt. A live showcase is a tool to communicate the ethos of a collection. It provides a connect with the audience and allows for an 'interaction', which is simply not possible on a digital platform. Anand Kabra

the online show, details of the garments that even a look-book may not cover and behind-thescenes content. Some of the more well-known designers who employed this platform include Prabal Gurung (his collection for Onward Kashiyama), MM6 Maison Martin Margiela, Joseph, Opening Ceremony. With the world going digital, there is no escaping what the Internet has done for fashion. From the huge burst of online retail stores, to social network communication, a thriving blogging industry and live streaming; fashion and designers have never been as ‘reachable’ as they are today. The platform is brilliant for young, fresh talent who have no other way or even the financial means for a large

showcase or the wherewithal to attract the right fashion industry bigwigs. But can it make up for the lack of physical ‘touch and feel’ quality, the collaboration between a showcase and showmanship — the sound, the lighting and the mood that contribute to the story of a collection? Can a digital show ever replace a runway show? Sujata Assoumul, editor Harpers Bazaar India believes so, “I think digital fashion weeks are great. They are a brilliant option for those who may not be able to travel or are strapped for time. “They are an option for young designers who need less expensive platforms. However, it will always be an option. A second option. It can never replace the impact of a live show. Part of the experience of watching a collection, is the palpability of audience reaction, the vibe in the environment. A collection showcase isn’t about clothes, it is about an experience.”

I enjoyed directing Dhoni: Prakash Raj

P

rakash Raj is making his debut as a director in Telugu with Dhoni. He has also played the lead role and produced the film. The film’s early screenings in Hyderabad and Chennai got tremendous response and Prakash Raj has been getting rave reviews for his performance. Talking to the media, Prakash Raj said, “Acting isn’t a big deal for me; however, I really enjoyed directing the film and it was quite a

fulfilling experience. A few years ago, someone asked me why Telugu films never win any awards at the national level and I felt bad about it. So when I wanted to direct a film, I chose a sensible story, which all of us can relate to. We all must have gone through a lot of hurdles regarding our studies when we were young and I have tried to bring alive some of those moments in Dhoni.” When asked about whether

P

rakash Raj comes up with yet another remarkable performance in his latest film Dhoni, which is a remake of the Marathi film Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho. He plays the role of an anguished father who moves heaven and earth to run his family. The film questions the morality of the education system, which is governed by competition and narrates the story of a middle-class family that is shattered after a horrifying incident. Prakash Raj stars as Subramanyam, a middleclass guy who struggles to provide good education to his children. His son Karthik (Aakash) aspires to become a cricketer like Dhoni and soon Subramanyam is told that if Karthik doesn’t pass in his exams, he will not be promoted to the 10th class. Subramanyam wants his son to study well and forces him to give up cricket for a few months. This leads to a freak incident that makes Subramanyam question the education system. The film is a slice of life drama and focuses on the difficulties, which middleclass families have to go through. Right from providing good education to his children to managing the finances, Subramanyam is under intense pressure most of the times and Prakash Raj is perfect in

this role. There’s a scene where he vents out all his frustration on his son and it is conceived so well that you begin to wonder if Prakash Raj was hallucinating. He’s completely in control of how the story unfolds in the first half and there are moments where the difference between reel and real life blurs. After a gripping first half, the moment Prakash Raj shifts his attention to the flaws in the education system, it gets a tad too preachy. The film points out some of the basic reasons why students undergo a lot of pressure at school and why it’s more important to realise their true potential than to be in a rat race. Aakash, Radhika Apte and Nasser are fantastic in their roles. Thanks to a great cast and a good script, the film never gets boring. Ilayaraja’s background score is a big asset to the film and KV Guhan’s cinematography deserves special mention. Films like Dhoni don’t come often and Prakash Raj deserves a pat on the back for making such a heart-warming film. It isn’t entirely flawless, but touches the right chords so many times that it reminds us of our own lives. Go watch it.

the film would run at the box-office or not, he shot back saying, “I believe that any film, which is sensible and honest will strike a chord with people.” Dhoni also stars Aakash, Radhika Apte, Gollapudi, Brahmanandam and Nasser. Ilayaraja has composed the music and KV Guhan is its cinematographer. The film opened in screens across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu today.

Intriguing yet flawed In his fourth directorial venture New York-bornand-trained Israeli writer-director Cedar tackles what feels like a deeply felt personal issue

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2012

Katy Perry and Russell Brand settle divorce issues

K ROAD TO OSCARS Postnoon News

J

ospeh Cedar is in the race for an Oscar with his family-themed drama Footnote. It deals with an academic rivalry between a father and son. Jewish and academically inclined audiences worldwide will respond to numerous aspects of this unusual drama, although it is paradoxically both too broad and too esoteric for the general art house public. On the esoteric side, the picture is steeped in the world of Talmudic scholarship, a highly specialised field pursued in the film by the cranky, uncommunicative Eliezer Shkolnik (Shlomo Bar Aba, a big television and theatre comedy star in Israel) and his driven, expansive son Uriel (leading man type Lior Ashkenazi). In the subjectively shot opening scene, Eliezer stews uncomfortably while Uriel is officially installed in the academic Academy, with which the older man has an adversarial relationship. Amit Poznansky’s pounding, insistent scoring guarantees that Footnote will not be a subtle affair, but it’s worse than that, as it demands attention for its own sake and seriously distracts from whatever is going on at the moment. Cedar’s use of digressions, often detailing the key points in the lives and careers of both these radically different scholars, who have devoted their lives to analysing the historical, linguistic and literary fine

points of Judaism’s sacred texts is sort of heavy-handed. Eliezer learns he has won the greatest possible honour, one that has eluded him for two decades, the Israel Prize. As the stunned Uriel observes, his perennially bitter father will “have to reboot his whole personality” in the wake of this accolade. But that’s not the half of it, as startling subsequent events unfold. There is an exceptionally intense and well-written long scene involving partisan, grudge-holding scholars in a tiny office, torrents of bitterness, jealousy, second thoughts as ill-will drench the proceedings all around. Even when all is said and done, however, the character of the father has not been nearly as well developed as that of the son, leaving a serious imbalance where it feels there should have been equality. While Uriel confides about his innermost feelings to his wife, Eliezer, his own wife’s presence notwithstanding, has no comparable confidant. Despite the potency of the issues and emotions stirred up, matters remain rather out of wack at the conclusion, which is marred by Cedar’s jarring decision to cut away to a dance performance. Top performances comes from Ashkenazi, who lends presence and persistent energy to the role of the dynamic, often anguished son.

Tom Felton in Therese Raquin T

hough best known for starring in all eight Harry Potter films as mischievous Potter antagonist Draco Malfoy, British actor Tom Felton also had a major role in last year’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Now the actor can add to his list of postPotter projects with Therese Raquin, the adaptation of the 19th century novel/play by French writer Emile Zola that’s set to star Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) in the title role. Therese is forced to marry Camille (Tom Felton) against her wishes. After Therese falls in love with another man, the two plot to murder Camille — only to be tormented with visions of his ghost.

aty Perry had to sing I Kissed a Girl a lot of times to get where she is today. Russell Brand had to tell a lot of racy jokes and fit into some very tight pants to achieve his current level of success. And now, the estranged couple have figured out where their gotten gains are going to go once they’ve split for good. “The parties have entered into a comprehensive written settlement of all issues, including, without limitation, with respect to the property to be confirmed or assigned to each party,” it says in big block letters on Perry’s response to Brand’s divorce filing.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Pearce to manage England vs the Dutch LONDON: Stuart Pearce will manage England in their friendly international against the Netherlands on February 29, Football Association (FA) chairman David Bernstein said on Thursday. Pearce, the England Under21 manager, was given temporary control of the senior side for the match against the Dutch at Wembley following Fabio Capello’s resignation as England manager on Wednesday. Capello quit just four months before the start of Euro 2012 following the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy ahead of the Chelsea defender’s trial on charges of racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand, which is due to take place after the tournament in Poland and Ukraine. Former England full-back Pearce, who was Capello’s assis-

tant, will take charge of the Great Britain’s men’s Olympic team at the 2012 Games in London. “I can announce that Stuart Pearce will manage the England team against Holland,” said Bernstein at a Wembley news conference on Thursday. “He has huge experience outside and inside the organisation. He has been working with the under-21 team and has been working with Fabio for some time. I have got great confidence in Stuart, we will be in good hands. “Our priority then will be to appoint a new England manager.” Bernstein added, “I want to commend Stuart Pearce. I spoke to him a little earlier and, as you might expect from Stuart, his first thought was for his country and for managing his country without any conditions at all. “He just said, ‘If you would

I can announce that Stuart Pearce will manage the England team against Holland FA Chairman David Bernstein like me to do it, I want to do it’. “And, I must say, I was really impressed with his attitude. I would expect nothing less from him.” Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, cleared of tax evasion charges, remains the overwhelming favourite to succeed Capello on a long-term basis.AFP

Scotland want closed stadium

Ross Ford

EDINBURGH: Scotland are so confident of playing Wales at their own game in a Six Nations clash in Cardiff on Sunday, they’ve asked for the Millennium Stadium’s roof to be closed in a bid to ensure ideal conditions. Many pundits believe Scotland’s best chance of winning in the Welsh capital for the first time in a decade is for them to play in the forecast rain, weather which has provided the backdrop to some of their most notable recent triumphs including a 2010 win over then world champions South Africa. And they could, if they wanted, insist on this weekend’s match being played in the open air as the standard protocol for Tests at the Millennium is that both sides must agree to the retractable roof being closed. Wales, 23-21 winners away to Ireland in their tournament opener last weekend, are unlikely to have any qualms about playing ‘indoors’. But nor are Scotland, according to captain Ross Ford, even though their handling game let them down badly in decent con-

ditions at Murrayfield during last Saturday’s 13-6 loss at home to England. “We’ve asked for the roof to be closed, so that guarantees us a nice dry ball to go out and play the way we want to,” Ford said. “We believe we’ve got the ability there to put pressure on Wales with the way we want to play and we’d prefer it if the roof was closed,” the hooker added. “We have had victories in the worst weather conditions, but I think you would be hard pressed to find a rugby player who enjoys the wet and the cold. “We’re going down there with the intention of closing the roof and playing.” In Gregor Laidlaw, nephew of Scotland great Roy, the visitors will have a ‘running’ fly-half in contrast to Dan Parks, who retired from international duty after the England defeat and was renowned for his ability to direct operations with the boot in the wet. But Laidlaw will be looking to the forwards and scrum-half Chris Cusiter to provide him with quick ball in a bid to spark a

Scotland back division that, for all the talent of the Lamont brothers and Max Evans in particular, has now gone four games without a try. “Greg for Edinburgh in the Heineken (European) Cup this year, everything that’s been asked of him he’s gone out and done it,” Ford said. “That’s the type of man he is. “I’m sure he will carry on in the same vein down in Wales on Sunday.” World Cup semi-finalists Wales will be firm favourites to win this weekend but the 27year-old Ford added: “It is a big challenge, going down to Wales always is. “Wales are coming off a good win in Ireland, but we believe we’ve seen enough from how Ireland played them and that we’ve got the ability in our squad to go down there and win. “We’ve had a look at the video from Saturday and believe we’ve found areas we can sharpen up on and that will give us an edge in the way we’re trying to play and to put Wales under pressure.” AFP

South Korea’s Wi flirts with 59 at Pebble Greg Heakes

PEBBLE BEACH: Charlie Wi flirted with a 59 for much of his round before finishing nine-under 61 to seize a share of the firstround lead at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Thursday. South Korea’s Wi, who played the easier of the three courses, said he didn’t realize how close he was to magic 59 number because he thought organizers had set the Monterey Peninsula course as a par-72 instead of its actual par70. “I was looking at the scorecard like what’s the par here?” said Wi. “I thought it was par-72. That 59 never crossed my mind, not once.” On the 13th hole, Wi tappedin for birdie to get to eight under.

Charlie Wi of South Korea reacts to a missed putt.

That left him needing three birdies on the final five holes to reach 59. He made one more birdie for nine-under. Wi shares the first-round lead with two others, New Zealander Danny Lee and former two-time champ Dustin Johnson, of the US, who both shot 63 on the Pebble Beach course, which did play at par-72. Wi did manage to set a course record, beating the old mark of 62 which was shot by Jeff Maggert last year on the same Monterey course. “Any time you’re shooting nine-under, you’re making putts,” Wi said. “It was really nice to see the ball go in today.” “Yeah, 59 is a special number, but I wasn’t trying to stay at nine (under). I was trying to make more birdies.”

Woods opens with round of 68 PEBBLE BEACH: Tiger Woods got his 2012 PGA Tour season off to a solid start Thursday, firing a four-under 68 at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am to sit five strokes back of a trio of leaders. Woods took advantage of some perfect weather in Thursday’s first round at the Spyglass Hill golf course — considered the tougher of the three courses the field will tackle this week. “I drilled it great today,” Woods said. “I feel much more confident with my game.” The 14-time major winner was five strokes back of a threesome at the top of the

Tiger Woods hits an approach shot on the 17th hole in Pebble leaderboard, New Zealand’s Danny Lee, Charlie Wi of South Korea and American Dustin Johnson who all reached nine-under. Woods, who is now ranked 18th in the world, made the turn at twounder on a bright sunny day.

Sri Lanka win toss and more

PERTH: Sri Lankan were rolling on fine having kept Australia down to 121 for 4 from 26 overs after captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and chose to field against Australia in the third tri-series One-day international at Perth’s WACA ground on Friday. The home side named an unchanged side after beating India in the rainshortened series opener in Melbourne on Sunday. Sri Lanka made one change from the side beaten by four wickets by India in Perth on Wednesday, promoting spinner Sachithra Senanayake. Australia named Peter Forrest as 12th man, while

Evra-Suarez reunion adds fuel to rivalry Neil Johnston

MANCHESTER: All eyes at Old Trafford on Saturday will be on Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez should the two players meet for the first time since a race row. Uruguay forward Suarez was banned for eight games after being found guilty of racially abusing the United defender in a 1-1 draw at Anfield in October. The incident stoked the bitter rivalry between the north-west giants, with Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish — who has continued to insist Suarez should never have been banned at all — steadfast in support of the striker. However, the clubs have met since October’s clash, with Liverpool knocking United out of the FA Cup at Anfield last month, and Dalglish, who along with opposing manager Sir Alex Ferguson has called for calm, believes that tie has helped defuse tensions between the sides. “Everyone involved, including the media, the supporters and both teams have a responsibility to ensure this weekend is remembered as a cracking game of football between two very good sides, rather than for anything else,” Dalglish told Liverpool’s website.

Patrice Evra

Luis Suarez “I thought everyone involved in the FA Cup tie at Anfield played their part in making sure that the match was played in the right way, so let’s make sure that happens again this weekend. “I’m sure people will want to talk about Luis Suarez but he accepted his ban, served his suspension and returned against Spurs on Monday.

“It’s time for all of us to draw a line under what happened and move forward. “People are already speculating on the pre-match ceremony, but from Luis’s point of view we have spoken to him and I know he will shake the hand of Patrice Evra and the other Manchester United players before the game.” The Suarez-Evra clash came

in the same month as the incident that led to Chelsea captain John Terry facing criminal charges of racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand, brother of United’s Rio. A concerned Ferguson told CNN: “This is a moment where we have to take stock and we should do something about it if it’s surfacing again, and be really

hard and firm on any form or shape of racism. “There have been a couple of examples recently which is not good. In 2012, you can’t believe it.” Reigning Premier League champions United go into the match two points behind leaders Manchester City and 16 ahead of Liverpool. But for League Cup finalists Liverpool their Premier League goal this term is a top four finish that will guarantee Champions League football next season. And given they are just four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, that aim remains within their sights. Last season United’s record 19th English title took them one above Liverpool and Old Trafford veteran Ryan Giggs said even though the Anfield club were last crowned champions of England in 1990, they remained a key litmus test for Ferguson’s side. “We’re the two most successful teams in the country, so we know we’ve got to perform and play well to get anything from any game against them. “It’s the club we tried to catch for so long and now we’ve caught them, the challenge is to stay ahead.”

Zambia set for glory Keyvan Naraghi

LIBREVILLE: A stunning start to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations set up Zambia to defy the odds and qualify for the final against Ivory Coast at Stade de l’Amitie on Sunday. The Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) ran Group A favourites Senegal ragged in the first half at the Estadio de Bata and could have led at half-time by more than the two goals Emmanuel Mayuka and Rainford Kalaba scored. Senegal, widely touted as third favourites behind Ivory Coast and Ghana for the biggest African football prize, pulled one goal back but an equaliser eluded

them in a tense climax. The result was a sign of things to come for each country with Zambia topping the final table and avoiding the Ivorians in the last eight while Senegal came last after three losses and coach Amara Traore was fired this week. France-born Zambia coach Herve Renard, who returned to the post only three months before the biennial tournament kicked off, later explained how he sank the Senegalese. “I knew their defenders were tall and slow so we played the ball behind them, forcing them to turn. Our first half performance was close to perfection,” boasted the 43-year-old who took Zambia

to the quarter-finals two years ago. Zambia came from behind twice to draw 2-2 against bogey team Libya in the second series of group games with Mayuka on target again and captain Christopher Katongo snatching the second equaliser. The mudbath conditions after torrential pre-match rain in Bata prevented the slick, quick Chipolopolo punishing the slower Libyans and Renard slammed the officials for allowing the fixture to go ahead. Co-hosts Equatorial Guinea won their first two matches, meaning Zambia needed maximum points when they clashed to overtake them on the table and they

Zambia had fulfilled the pretournament demand of Renard that his team make the semifinals and after riding their luck they went one step further with a late Mayuka goal seeing off Ghana in Bata.
