Harvesting happiness this season pulihora and masala vadas are the delicacies made. The houses are decorated with garlands of mango leaves tied to the main doorframe, a rangoli adorning the front yard and gobbemma, which is made of cow dung, is placed in between. Bhogi is celebrated first where unwanted items of the house are burnt. Then comes the main festival of Makar Sankranti. The third and last day of the festivities is Kanuma, when the cow is worshipped.. But the main attraction of the festival has to be the kite flying, with youngsters and elders alike enthusiastically participating in impromptu kite fights. Excited cries of ‘dheel’ and ‘afaa’ rent the air even as the sky is dotted with colourful kites. “Families wake up early in the morning and head to their terraces to spend the rest of the day flying kites. Kids can be spotted flying kites with specially made box lamps for that added touch of fun,” adds Vandana Janjirala, who will be going to Singaram to celebrate this Sankranti.

t is that time of the year when most families get together to celebrate Sankranti. Despite their busy schedules, many people head homewards to celebrate the harvest festival . Celebrated with much traditional fervour in the State, Sankranti is probably one of the most awaited festivals of the year. Haridasulu, gangireddulu, cock fights, and large colourful rangolis symbolise Makar Sankranti celebrations in Andhra Pradesh. However, with the changing times, the festival has been losing some of its traditional sheen. Which is why families prefer to head to their villages for a more traditional festivities. Old timers in the City recall how the streets in villages and towns reverberate

with the bhajans of the Haridas. “Gone are the days when children used to run after a decorated bull lead by a man seeking alms. These can be seen only in villages now,” said, Jyothi Das who will be going to

Yellareddy to celebrate the festival. Makar Sankranti is also a great time for foodies. Lip smacking sweets and savouries like ariselu, bobattulu, jantikalu, paalakaayalu, payasam, paramannam,

mid a ‘meek’ opposition from the TRS and the Telangana political JAC YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy embarked on his journey to Nizamabad this morning with about a hundred vehicles in his motorcade, lustily cheering supporters and a lot of fanfare. In their zeal some of Jagan’s supporters even stuck out of the car windows to show their ‘strength’. Slogans eulogising YSR and Jagan rent the air at Jagan’s Lotus Pond residence before he embarked on his visit to Telangana region. The YSRC workers euphorically raised ‘Jai Jagan’ slogans. On his way, Jagan stopped to pay homage to his father’s statue at Punjagutta. His loyalist legislator Konda Surekha and her husband and MLC Konda Murali accompanied Jagan to pay homage to YSR. Jagan also offered prayers at the Medak Church on his way to Telangana. TRS legislator Harish Rao was placed under house arrest in Siddipet as a precautionary

Babu's padayatra disrupted

T

DP chief Chandrababu Naidu took out a ‘padayatra’ from NTR Trust Bhavan to Vidyut Soudha, the corporate office of AP Transco, on Tuesday morning to highlight the woes of people due to power shortage. The atmosphere seemed charged up with Telangana activists camping at Vidyut Soudha to confront the TDP chief. They held banners denouncing Naidu and asking him to ‘go back’. The TDP came up with an interesting slogan – ‘No current in State, no

power with CM’. The police initially contemplated arresting Naidu at NTR Trsut Bhavan itself, but recalled the decision for strategic reasons. Addressing a gathering of his party workers and supporters at NTR Trust Bhavan, Naidu held the Congress misrule responsible for villages reeling in darkness. The padayatra was disrupted by the police on road no 2, Banjara Hills, and the T employees of Transco, who wanted to confront Naidu, were arrested.

measure. The police arrested 20 TRS leaders from Chegunta, Medak to avert any clash between the TRS and YSRC. Armoor T-JAC president Gopal Sharma was also under house arrest. The T-JAC called for a bandh in Armoor division and educational institutions in the division were closed. The police posted four additional SPs, and eight DSPs are supervising the security arrangements at Armoor. Meanwhile, it is reported that by the time Jagan reaches Armoor, he will be accompanied by over 500 vehicles. The TRS leaders have asserted that they would oppose the deeksha of Jagan alleging that he was evasive on his party’s stance on the separate statehood to Telangana saying that the decision had to be taken by the Centre. Jagan is scheduled to hold a 48-hour fast at Armoor in Nizamabad district over farmers’ problems from this noon. “No one should come here without a clear stance on the separate statehood issue. No political yatra should be undertaken in Telangana without endorsing separate statehood demand,” JAC convener M Kodandaram said.

he Indian Consulate in Sahanghai has not covered itself with glory if the version of Kamal Raheja, brother of Deepak Raheja, one of the two Hyderabadi traders ill-treated by Chinese traders, is any indication. “My brother is suffering and is heart-broken. He needs immediate medical attention but does not have money. The Embassy is not doing anything,” complained Kamal Raheja. He told Postnoon, “The legal proceedings are not yet over. The Indian Consulate is not doing any great work. On weekends they were shut and even now we do not have clear information,” said Kamal. Though the two traders— Deepak and Shyamsundar Agerwal, have been rescued and bought to Shanghai on January 5, there is no progress since. Deepak’s family is spending sleepless nights and nobody cares, said Kamal. Amisha Raheja, Deepak’s wife who is in Dubai has expressed concerns about her husband’s internal injuries and mental status.

pretty sum we spend from our pockets every month to meet the fuel requirement,” said an inspector, asking not to identify him. With numerous bandobasts, urgent meetings, other non-productive works, a police officer has to go around several times a day. Every police station has been allotted 120 litres a month per vehicle which is grossly insufficient, police say. But some who know the working style of the police say they (cops) never spend money from the pocket. “That’s nonsense,” said RK Memon, who was attendant of a petrol bunk in Trimulgherry for some years. “They fill the tank from the bunks and wink at us.” And, there is also ‘mamool’ (gratis), you know.” Critics of the police say the officers often use the vehicles for personal purposes; no wonder the fuel seems insufficient. Police, obviously dismiss these as humbug but what is clear is that the fuel is insufficient. The police officers demand average 200 litres a month as Hyderabad is a metro city with ‘metro problems.’ Police inspector D Prasanna Kumar is sad when he hears things like police getting mamool. “I pay for every cup of tea I drink. Same with petrol.” Problem is more in large area police

Voices The immigration website address is confusing. The language on the website is also so complicated. They should make a userfriendly website, which is easy to navigate and understand.

It’s very complex process out here. We have come with our landlord to sign some papers. The whole system here is not friendly and welcoming.

They need to get a structure in place and make visa processes easier. The staff lack basic communication and are disorganised. For one paper work, we need to come here not less than four times.

Stopgap that goes on n The Bureau of Immigration office has been under construction in Kavadiguda and was suppose to be shifted months ago. Officials says that due to some technical issues with the CPWD, it is taking time and are uncertain when they would be shifting there. n More than 30,000 expatriates come and go out of Hyderabad every month. Nearly 50 per cent of them are students and most of them are from African countries.

alk into the old airport office, and it’s a new world all together. Students, tourists, employees, businessmen and house owners are found wandering like in a mela and some are found queued up, waiting in anguish. The bureau of immigration office is ‘temporally shifted’ to the Begumpet airport where hundreds of expatriates come here every working day for visa-related services like registration, extension and exit services. However, expatriates are crying foul about the services. “Extension of visa is made a long and tedious process,” says Sunxiao from China. Two of my friends’ visas expired and two others don’t know what to do about the visa,” he said.

Sunxiao said knowing the delay and red-tape, he had come months in advance to get his documents ready for extension. Particularly hit is the student community, which has been complaining about several problems that they have been facing. “Firstly, it’s not organised. No one gives us information or guides us. I m so confused and it’s very troublesome to come here again and again,” says Hussian from East Africa. A frustrated Annie Mary from Cameroon tells Postnoon about how this new rule of Foreign Registration Office (FRO) is creating problems for her. “There is a new Act, wherein we need to produce an FRO document from the university concerned. The university will give this only in April, and till then the government is asking me to go back to my country.” The recent survey shows that

on an average there has been a traffic of more than 30,000 expatriates every month in Hyderabad. The ministry of immigration officials say that it’s difficult to keep a track of all these expatriates as many change address without informing the ministry. Secondly, the Telangana agitation compels them to extend their visa. “Since last few months there has been in increase in the number of extension cases due to the agitation. However, we check the dates and also verify with the college only then give extensions, said Foreigners Regional Registration Officer Bhavana Saxena. Narasimhan to continue U Srinivas

G

overnor ESL Narasimhan will continue until further orders according to highly placed sources. A communication from the Centre has reached the governor’s office that he will continue until further orders. His term ended on January 6. Sources close to Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy said that in view of the current political situation, the Governor’s services are indispensable and the Centre is happy with the way the General Strike was handled by him and the CM. Narasimhan, who had been playing a key role in the State as a constitutional head, is likely to continue in his post further. His services will be extended for another term it is reported. The main reason to retain Narasi-

mhan is that the CM Kiran Kumar Reddy was very comfortable with him. Both the Governor and Chief Minister have gelled well. This had made all the difference to the State especially in terms of the law and order. There are reports that just before the Cabinet expansion or the Budget session of the Assembly the extension orders for the Governor may come. it will be for another term. Sources in Delhi also said that the Centre was very happy with the Governor. Narasimhan has the ‘guts’ to face any situation, especially in terms of law and order. Narasimhan had taken a number of decisions boldly on various issues especially the vice chancellors’ appointments. Above all the TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao was planning to restart his stir for Telangana again after Sankranti. In this regard the Centre wants Narasimhan to be around.

‘Fire safety measures are not negotiable’ Surprise inspection of fire equipment and mock drills are to be launched in the City, says the new director-general of AP fire services. NOC from the department is mandatory for high-rise buildings and it cannot be negotiated or relaxed Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

I

f the City’s public institutions and utility centres like hospitals, schools and malls fall short of fire safety requirements, the conditions of fire stations are no better. As against the requirement of 432 fire stations, AP has 232 stations. Hyderabad requires 40 and it has 14. Postnoon met the new director general of Andhra Pradesh

Fire Service Vivek Dubey, who took charge only three days ago. Dubey, while pleading lack of time to understand the requirements fully, agrees that fire safety requirements need a boost to prevent a repeat of Kolkata hospital type accidents.

What are your promises? I am a public servant. Instead of making huge promises and assurances, I will let my work speak. The department will strive

to serve the public in a proactive manner. Proper coordination between fire authority and GHMC is primary. An NOC from fire department is mandatory.

What are the challenges you face? My first and foremost priority would be to keep the entire State safe from fire related incidents. I will take all the necessary steps to achieve that in the forthcoming days.

Reality check

Do you have any plans to improve quality of service in the department? My priorities will be to strengthen the department by means of providing necessary infrastructure. I have plans to hold mock drills, demonstrations and in house training programmes to increase quality of service.

e’s oblivious to the world around him, his grease covered hands busy fiddling with the brake wires. Parvez is a scooter/bike mechanic and he loves nothing better than repairing a bike. He started out as a mechanic 10 years ago and his love for the profession has not diminished since the time he forayed into this profession as a wide eyed assistant to his master. He boasts about being able to do any kind of two-wheeler repairs like wiring, engine work etc. A city is defined by He confesses that he the people who live never wanted to study and work in it. Here even though his parents we take a look at were keen on getting him the human threads educated. But today, he says given a chance he that make up our would definitely want to urban tapestry study mechanical engineering, gaining more knowledge about his field. He says he likes to work on bikes like Hero Honda Passion and Splendour. Clearly he’s a fan of Hero Honda as he prefers to own a simple Passion rather than a flashy Yamaha.

According to rules there should be a fire service station for every two lakh population. The State population being 8. 64 crore, AP requires at least 432 fire services stations. The department also lacks full-fledged staff. Crucial points like Secretariat, Assembly, High Court, Salarjung Museum do not have fullfledged fire service stations. Additional director of Fire Service Department Jaya Ram Naik told Postnoon that they require at least require `10 crore each for setting up a complete fire station with modern equipment.

New excise policy under study: minister

E

xcise and Prohibition minister Mopidevi Venkataramana Rao on Monday announced that the State government was exercising to formulate new Excise Policy to avoid allegations against the department. Releasing the Excise Employees’ Association annual Diary-2012-13 in the Secretariat, Venkataramana Rao said that the people in the State were displeased with the functioning of the Excise Department due to some unfortunate incidents like the Mylavaram hooch tragedy. It would be a gigantic task to refurbish the image of the Excise department. Therefore, the government was contemplating to bring a new Excise policy in the State, he added. The Excise policies of other States would also be studied thoroughly before preparing most effective policy.

Birds of a feather

Anubha K Singh

anubha.k@postnoon.com

B

ird watching is not just a favourite pastime. It’s a much more serious activity. The Birdwatchers Society of Andhra Pradesh (BSAP) was founded as a non-governmental organisation in 1980 by a few enthusiasts in the State with an objective of spreading the message of bird conservation. The society has grown over the years. It organises field trips, lectures, film and slide shows, nature camps, treks, waterfowl counts, bird ringing, etc. The primary goal is to record and study the appearance of migratory birds in and around Andhra Pradesh. Initially, the

group consisted of only ornithologists or conservationists who corresponded through a newsletter. However, now even nature enthusiasts can become part of this organisation. “We meet once a month for outings on a Sunday and visit the wilderness in and around Hyderabad to watch birds.

Deoband calls for bar on Rushdie entry NEW DELHI: Salman Rushdie’s proposed visit to Jaipur for the Literary Festival has come under cloud with the Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband saying on Monday that the Booker-prize winning author should not be allowed on Indian soil because he has “hurt the sentiments of Muslims the world over”. However, one of the organisers of the prestigious literary festival said Rushdie would be coming as scheduled. “Rushdie should not be allowed to visit India. If he visits India, it would be adding salt to the injuries of Muslims. He has hurt our religious sentiments,” Vice Chancellor of Deoband, India’s most influential Islamic seminary, Maulana Abul Qasim Nomani told IANS over phone from Deoband. Nomani said the Darul Uloom was yet to formally write to the government on the issue. “We will write to the external affairs ministry, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi if the government doesn’t cancel his visa,” Nomani said. Rushdie has been invited to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival Jan 20-24. Sanjoy Roy, managing director of Teamworks Productions, which produces the Jaipur Literature Festival, told IANS: “Rushdie is coming.” “A literature platform like the Jaipur festival is a place for free speech in the best democratic traditions. Salman Rushdie has attended several literary events and forums in India in recent years without incident. This includes his attending the Commonwealth Writers Prize awards in 2000, and the Jaipur Literature Festival in 2007,” Roy said.“In plural societies such as ours, it is imperative that we continue to allow avenues for unfettered literary expression,” he added. An FIR under various sections of Wild Life Act 1972 has been lodged against the shooter, who is currently in Qatar for a shooting competition and action will be taken against him on his return, the official said. Sunny conduct acceptable: Katju ‘There is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future,’ says PCI chairman in support of the Indo-Canadian porn star of Bigg Boss 5 fame NEW DELHI: Ruling out any action against Sunny Leone, who participated in the Indian reality television show, Bigg Boss 5, Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Justice Markandey Katju Monday said that the porn star conducted herself in a socially acceptable manner in India and should not be treated a social outcast.

Sunny Leone was earning her livelihood in the US in a manner acceptable in that country, though it is not acceptable in India. Hence, if she conducts herself in India in a manner which is socially acceptable and does not breach the social moral code in India, we should not treat her as a social outcast,” Katju said in a

statement. The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), an independent body instituted by the Indian Broadcasters Foundation (IBF), received complaints that Leone was promoting her personal pornography website with the help of her Indian reality TV performance. The BCCC recently directed

that Leone not to use the show to promote her pornography business. Katju said that he had not been shown anything to suggest that she is indulging in pornography while in India. Giving some examples, Katju said: “There is no saint without a past and no sinner without a future.” IANS

Romney firing remarks draw fire

R

epublican front-runner Mitt Romney has come under attack for remarking how he likes to fire people on the eve of New Hampshire’s primary. He was talking about inefficient health insurers, but rivals used the comment to pillory the tycoon, who built a fortune from corporate restructuring. Polls on Monday showed Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman jockeying for position behind Mr Romney in New Hampshire. The eventual nominee will challenge President Barack Obama in November. Primaries and caucuses will take place in every US state over the next few months before the prevailing Republican candidate is crowned at the party convention in August. But Tuesday’s vote in New Hampshire, followed by two more this month in South Carolina and Florida could well decisively shape the outcome of the race. There was a last flurry of campaigning in New Hampshire on Monday, with candidates holding town hall meetings and “meet and greets” in restaurants

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney shares a moment with grandchildren prior to addressing a rally at McKelvie Intermediate School in New Hampshire AFP and coffee shops. Former Massachusetts Governor Romney’s answer to a question from a business group gave plenty of ammunition to rivals. “I like to be able to fire people who provide services to me,” Mr Romney said, answering a question about healthcare

insurance. Former Utah Governor Huntsman was quick to attack. “Governor Romney enjoys firing people; I enjoy creating jobs,” Mr Huntsman said on Monday. “It may be that he’s slightly out of touch with the economic reality playing out in America right

now, and that’s a dangerous place to be.” With seven campaign stops on his agenda, Mr Huntsman was the busiest of the candidates on the eve-of-primary day. Texas Governor Rick Perry has begun campaigning in South Carolina anticipation of the 21 January primary there. Mr Huntsman’s attack on Mr Romney follows increased criticism of the years the former Massachusetts governor spent at a private equity firm, Bain Capital. The company undertook corporate restructuring projects under Mr Romney’s leadership. Rick Perry used the opportunity to attack Mr Romney’s remark that he knew what it was like to fear getting a “pink slip”. “I have no doubt that Mitt Romney was worried about pink slips, whether he was going to have enough of them to hand out,” Mr Perry said on Monday. In an appearance on NBC’s Today show, Mr Gingrich said Mr Romney “owes us a report on his stewardship” of Bain Capital. AFP

Glitz Revived at the Detroit Auto Show DETROIT: The cars ‘glitzy and sedate, grand and green’ were back in the spotlight on Monday as Detroit celebrated the industry’s comeback from grueling recession at the annual auto

show here. Excitement was clearly in the air at the industry’s premier North American extravaganza, with US and foreign makers confidently launching new models and predicting growing

markets in the United States and the big emerging economies albeit with a cautious eye still on troubled Europe. US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood opened this year’s show cheering the industry’s future, three years after two top US automakers, General Motors and Chrysler, nearly died in the economic crash and the industry lost hundreds of thousands of jobs. “As you look at these breathtaking vehicles, I ask you to remember they represent more than creative thinking and design,” LaHood said. “They represent American factories bustling and humming, American workers churning out cars, and American families earning paychecks again.” All three

of Detroit’s carmakers are now back in profit, and last year regained market share from their arch-rivals, the Japanese producers, for the first time since 1988. The Japanese were set back by the interruption of manufacturing from the devastating March 11 earthquake-tsunami disaster. After a radical revamp of their product offerings and two years of steady growth in US sales, the Detroit Three are ready to fight, not only to hang onto their lead, but to expand it. There was plenty on offer at the higher end of the market, with Porsche’s brand new Carrera, BMW’s shake-up of the 3 series, and all new MercedesBenz SL roadster which celebrates the classic car’s 60th anniversary. Iran spikes uranium to near-bomb grade

A Satellite image of the Fordo site in 2009 AP MOSCOW/WASHINGTON: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran has started enriching uranium to the 20-per cent level, which can easily be turned into fissile warhead material. “The IAEA can confirm that Iran has started the production of uranium enriched up to 20 percent using IR-1 centrifuges in the Fordo Fuel Enrichment Plant,” the agency said in a statement. However, IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said that all nuclear materials and operations in the Fordo facility are “under the Agency’s containment and surveillance”. Iranian officials earlier said the Fordo plant, deep inside the mountains near the central Iranian city of Qom, was build to produce 20-percent uranium needed for a research reactor in Tehran, which produces medical isotopes to treat cancer patients. The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoon Abbasi last August said that Iranian authorities planned to transfer all enrichment facilities from a plant in Natanz to Fordo, citing insufficient security. He also said that Iran had no plans to enrich uranium to higher than 20 percent. The news is likely to further increase tensions between Iran and the West over the country’s nuclear research. actions,” the statement said. Miraculous survival from horrific crash W

ith the car torn in two by the impact, it looks like an accident with a tragic outcome. But, astonishingly, a drinkdriver and his 16-year-old passenger escaped from this horrendous crash with ‘miraculously light’ injuries. Fearing for public safety, police had abandoned a chase in which the car reached speeds of up to 110mph. Christopher Jerman, 22, had taken the Ford

Focus for a spin after burgling his father’s house to get the keys. He was jailed for 20 months and banned from driving for three years after a court heard he had a blood-alcohol level of 106mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml. Jerman, of Holyhead, Anglesey, admitted burglary, aggravated vehicle taking and drink-driving in the incident last August.

After taking the car from his father’s house in Holyhead, he was seen speeding, shortly before midnight, by a traffic policeman on the A55 at the Britannia Bridge. Simon Mills, prosecuting at Caernarfon Crown Court, said that shortly afterwards the Ford, travelling on the wrong side of the road, hit an oncoming Nissan Pathfinder 4x4. The driver of the 4x4 escaped injury and his two passengers suffered only bruising

Brokers attributed the initial recovery in stocks to revival of buying by funds as well as retail investors, triggered by a firming trend on other Asian bourses, following overnight gains on the US market driven by positive economic data. The rupee appreciated by 25 paise to 52.26 per dollar in early trade on Tuesday, as the US currency weakened against euro and other major currencies overseas. The rupee had gained 20 paise to close at nearly three- week high of 52.51/52 per dollar on Monday.

HYDERABAD: Nokia plans to offer music on subscription to the customers of its new handheld phones. While the service is offered free of cost on a trial basis for three months, it will be charged eventually. This service, which is hitherto offered only on smart phones of the company, are now extended even on cheaper handsets. Indian mobile consumer is changing. Japanese carmakers eye big US gains after 2011 disaster DETROIT: Japanese carmakers are looking forward to big US sales gains after introducing a slew of new vehicles at the Detroit auto show, but will face stiff competition from a resurgent Detroit and ambitious Koreans and Germans. Toyota and Honda saw sales tumble in 2011 after supplies were shattered by the devastating March earthquake-tsunaminuclear disaster in Japan. It came at a particularly bad time for Toyota, which was finally recovering from a reputation-shattering series of mass safety recalls. The supply shortages also provided an opportunity for Ford, General Motors and Chrysler to capture new customers after years of painful restructuring resulted in radical revamps of their product offerings. “The problem for Toyota and Honda is that some of their market share losses are potentially permanent losses because the competition is so much better,” said Jesse Toprak, an analyst with TrueCar.com. “Consumers who would have bought a

Toyota or Honda ended up getting something else and realized these cars are as good or better.” Asian automakers dethroned the Detroit Three in 2009 as the biggest sellers in the US market as overall industry sales tum-

bled amidst a deep economic downturn that pushed GM and Chrysler into a government-backed bankruptcy. That trend reversed in 2011, when losses at Toyota and Honda pushed the Asian share

down to 43.7 per cent while US carmakers captured 46.9 per cent, according to Autodata. With total industry sales forecast to grow to 13.5 million vehicles in 2012 after posting a 10 per cent gain to 12.8 million last year, there should be plenty of new customers to go around. “We’re extremely bullish on the market and how we’re going to perform in it,” said Bob Carter, who heads the Toyota division of the group’s US sales team. Toyota is launching 19 new products this year across its four brands: Toyota, Lexus, Scion and Prius. “It is a very competitive market without a doubt. There’s good products coming from numerous auto makers,” Carter told AFP on the sidelines of the show. “We’ve always had and continue to have a leadership in terms of the safety, reliability and durability. What you’re starting to see is a new styling direction coming in.” That fresh, sexy styling was on display when Lexus unveiled a prototype of its new hybrid sports car the LF-LC coupe Monday. AFP

he Election Commission has done the right thing by ordering all Mayawati statues to be covered up because they offer undue publicity advantage to the CM. Sadly, there is no credible Opposition in UP to take advantage of the EC breather. Rahul Gandhi’s hut-hopping and Mulayam clan’s diatribe may keep them in news or draw applause from crowds, but these don’t translate into votes. The EC’s decision has given Mayawati what she wanted — A Dalit hero’s statues are being covered up whereas numerous entities named after high-caste national leaders remain untouched. And the rush with which the BJP, Congress and the SP absorb all tainted leaders booted out from the BSP shows that they have nothing new to offer. You may cover up the statues but you cannot keep Maya out of people’s minds.

rom keeping us supplied with foreign-made goodies during pre-liberalisation era to investing in the economy now, NRIs have always been the sought after lot. NRIs were made even more popular by Bollywood flicks — remember how India fell in love with the SRK-Kajol pair in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. No village is complete without its share of NRIs telling stories of milk and honey and how our country needs to progress. Now with politicos in a deadlock over policies once again India is looking for its sons from foren for rescue.

very morning, I am sure, most of you, like me, have an added exercise bestowed on us by the growing world web — deleting the seemingly alluring but stinky unwanted messages called spam from our cell phone and computer. The trouble is that it’s a frustrating experience. The more you do, the more vigorous they become much like flies or cockroaches. By the by, have you ever tried massacring cockroaches that scramble out of your broken bathroom sieve or kitchen sink? I did, and I still go cross-eyed with dread thinking of it. Kill a few of them and they come out like Genghis Khan’s army. Better leave them. Same is with spam. Little wonder that the inevitable has happened. In its latest report, Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based global Internet security firm says India has earned the disrepute of being the world’s top source of junk mail as spammers make use of lax laws and absent enforcement to turn the country into a centre of unsolicited email. “An average of 79.8 per cent of email traffic in the three months to the end of September was junk. Of that, 14.8 per cent originated in India followed by Indonesia and Brazil. India’s dubious top slot was attributed to lack of awareness about Internet security and anti-spam laws. But it is not all that bad, some would say, “Sometimes it gives a comic relief,” wrote a blogger, “They (Spam) recently announced an award to me and asked for my details! I was with my friends at a newspaper stand near my college when I saw the Postnoon newspaper and picked it up out of curiosity. I felt that this tabloid summed up all the news around the world very well. Since then, I have subscribed to the tabloid and read it regularly. I particularly love the center spread stories for their visual effect and the information they provide. Three of my friends too now read the newspaper and love it! Keep up the good work Postnoon.

The new page that you have started on History seems very interesting and informative. It will be helpful for children and adults alike as these are bits of really useful facts. Reading that page was a delight and I enjoyed learning about the Concorde and the time Vinyl records came into existence. It seems just about yesterday that the world heard of Bill Clinton’s impeachment and establishing of the United Nations is surely the greatest event of its time. Postnoon has done a wonderful job with this page and I hope to see more of such useful information Kriti Kaul for readers. Punjagutta

is an old game, enticing you with a sob story of a luscious beauty whose parents conveniently died in an air crash leaving a massive fortune to her which she wants you to take care too is old hat. What’s new is you are chosen for an elite group or a plum job… just apply and sing tra..la..la..ha..ha. We have an Information Technology Act - 2000. But we don’t have any convictions under it and it’s silent on spam. After the massive hacking job of Facebook in Bangalore last year where porno appeared in one’s account, the wellmeaning Net pundits warned us that spam can come in a variety of forms and most of them use female names (proving thereby it’s a man’s world, really). There are adults friends who want to take you to the world of ecstasy and property promoters who want to give you a slice of magnificent property. In the Bangalore instance where many fell victims because the virus came with tempting the message, “Party till 2 pm, say police,” “today’s traffic jam in….” “Look what’s happening to MG Road.”

Good focus on City The paper looks bright at the first look. I like the articles in the city that focus on the problems in the city, the recent one being on the cheating on the electricity. The paper is very colourful and also the features stories are an interesting read. It would be interesting to read some more innovative columns like faces of Hyderabad.

Total disgrace The news that the state government departments are the bigest defaulters on property tax is quite disturbing. When the government itself refuses to abide by the rules why should the people be expected to follow them. The recent exposure of government official-liquor trader nexus has completely shaken my faith in the system. If the government can’t get its act together and cleanse the system, it should resign and call for elections. The state cannot afford to have the public money wasted and looted like this. We definitely need a change for better. Sandeep Satre Khairatabad

I, for my part, think I am a stupid musician.” But Rabbi has had his plate full even otherwise . “I have been reading a lot, travelling a lot. I also produced and performed in a few stage shows, and I think that’s a lot already,” he says indicating that he has kept himself quite busy. Rabbi is known for his unconventional style of singing, but how does he describe himself? “It’s not upto a musician to describe himself. It’s upto the listeners and the world around me. I think my audience and the press are the ones who should decide

what kind of a musician I am,” he says. His first song Bulla ki Jaana had hints of Sufiana or the semi-folk touch, and this is what made the song stand out, so why have we not seen him attempting more songs in this genre? He says, “Out of all the songs I have done only one was Sufi. Yes, I would like to try out something more, but nothing has come up as yet.” Every artist needs some time to unwind and for Rabbi, the Internet is his favourite place. “I surf the Internet a lot, and I usually get hooked onto a lot of crazy, strange and whimsical things. It could be about pollution levels in Delhi to poetry, to some strange rituals or

strange records, basically, I look up just about anything. I am also an avid cricket fan, so a lot of times I am following cricket. I also love to watch videos, listen songs and look up biographies of my favourite artists around the world.” Well, Rabbi is now back to doing what he loves best — making music and before he signs off, he has a piece of advice for all aspiring musicians. He says, “Be yourself, and be good! Be good with every aspect of music, be it the instruments, props or anything related to your art. Be original and ensure you do it to the best of your abilities.” Point noted Rabbi!

orty-eight years ago, on January 11, a black-clad country singer named Johnny Cash saw his album Ring of Fire, rise to the top of the US pop album charts. Chagrined though he may have been at the fact that he could even remotely be referred to as ‘pop’, it was a watershed moment for country music. Gone were the days of Stetson-clad cowboys yodelling their way through the Prairie with a banjo and a bottle of whisky; country music had cast off its working class blues and headed into the heart of American urbana. Today, mention that you love country music and the sideways glances are replaced with excited babble about Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, coupled with much gushing over Scotty McCreery. Country music has long been associated with the weighty poignance (or flirty nonchalance) of its lyrical content, but in the 21st century country music ramped up its currency, and played down on the booze-soaked gloom (though not by too much). The likes of Rascal Flatts and Sugarland have taken country music well out of the realm of Hank Williams and Gene Autry and into the mainstream, and while the stalwarts will always be fondly remembered and revered, the Man in Black will forever be hailed as a musical pioneer.

KEEPING IT CLASSY! Leather accessories are a cool way of adding a bit of style to your outfit. The best part about leather accessories is that they add versatility to your look — you can be as formal or as casual as you want. Let's take a look at some of the best and the most desired leather accessories that suits a man’s wardrobe

Leather briefcases: Leather briefcases are great to carry around your important documents. Some leather briefcases have a separate compartment to fasten your laptop as well. You can also choose to sport the classical executive look with a sturdy and stylish leather briefcase. Whether you are going to work in an industrial loft space, or are thinking of going the Indiana Jones’ way, this Durango leather portfolio bag will lend you a rugged masculinity. The bag boasts of a wide array of compartments and a detachable shoulder strap. Leather wallets: Keep all your hard-earned green safely in leather wallets and look stylish as well. Tri-fold wallets are best to carry around business cards, ID and even keys. And of course, to keep in pictures of the beloved! This full-grain leather bi-fold wallet with snap closures is the best way to stay organised in style. It has seven card slots, mesh ID window, bill compartment and six Mylar card sleeves makes this wallet a must-have.

Leather belts: Far beyond holding your trousers up, leather belts have become quite an accessory. If you prefer to sport the casual look, there is a whole range of buckle designs that are available in the market today . Leather sandals and shoes: 2011 was dominated by gladiator sandals, which then made their way to the shelf of almost every other designer house. While the sandals may be best for casual wear, one needs to wear good shoes to the office at least. A good pair of oxfords may just do the trick for you. Put the right foot forward by slipping in and lacing up these vintage inspired brogues. A rounded toe and decorative perforations provide a modern update to a classic shoe that equally looks good with tailored trousers as it does with jeans.

Other fun leather accessories to have: =Personalised leather wrap flask =Leather excursion travel case

=Luggage tags with travel quotes =Leather wine bottle carrier =Weston leather cigar case

Leather jackets: A wardrobe is considered incomplete without a suitable leather jacket. Look stylish, stay warm and be comfortable — which other item of clothing can help you in all of these tasks simultaneously? A cool, urban take on the traditional five-buttoned Chinese tunic, the washed leather jacket sports a tall, stand-up collar, intricate tailoring and is a little shorter in length as compared to other leather jackets but its washed finish is what infuses the jacket with a vintage aesthetic. This brown leather jacket can be paired with bronze chino pants and floral liberty printed cotton shirt. — COMPILED BY SANA MIRZA

The glamour behind the glitz

B

ollywood seems to have a great fan in Madame Tussauds wax museum. Madhuri Nene Dixit, the most recent addition to the pantheon, joins some of the A-listers of Bollywood like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, who already have their wax statues there. Today we look at Bollywood’s section at Madam Tussauds

T

he West has always been enchanted by the movies Bollywood has produced. Fans abroad are more than eager to get to a glimpse of Big B or the King Khan. While cinema lovers abroad were once content to watch their favourite actors on the big screen, Madame Tussauds has given them a reason to get closer to the celebrities they idolise. It was no surprise when Amitabh Bachchan became the first Asian celebrity to be featured in the prestigious Tussauds. With this, Bachchan had his and Bollywood’s presence established there for posterity. If not with him, his fans have the opportunity of taking a picture with his statue in London, Hong Kong and New York wax museums. After Big B it was Aishwarya Rai who became the second celebrity from the Bollywood and the first female

actor to stand alongside the legend. Dressed in traditional Indian attire, the lighteyed beauty had a wax model dedicated to her at the Tussauds museum in New York in 2004. Well, if the Shenshah of Bollywood is there then the Badshah of Bollywood cannot be too far behind. The world’s favourite lover boy, SRK got his wax model in 2007. The statue looks every bit like Shah Rukh and it has been an object of awe and admiration for his fans world over. Our next celebrity’s name has figured in the list of the most handsome men in the world, so it should not come as a surprise that Salman Khan was the next in line for this honour as well. One of the most loveable Khans in the film industry, Salman is famously known as the bad guy of Bollywood due to his

antics on and off screen. His wax statue has captured that rugged raw appeal which makes women go gaga over him. With Kaho Na Pyaar Hai he earned the tag of the handsome loverboy, and with Dhoom2 he came to be known as the actor with the Greek god looks. His blonde streaked hair and chiseled body in the thrilling action film became a favourite with the masses. And the team at Madame Tussauds too could not help but be struck by his effortless charm. In 2011, Hrithik became the fifth Bollywood celebrity to be honoured at Tussauds. The statue has immortalised the oh-so-cool look he had in Dhoom2. Judging by the way

Tussauds is making these wax models, they seem to be more eager than us to honour our actors. Last year started with the Dhoom boy standing next to the veterans and in October 2011, Kareena Kapoor unveiled her statue at Blackpool. The unveiling also kick-started a world tour of the statue. Initially it was her Chameli look that was to be set in wax but later it was finalised to the peppy Jab we Met look. Bebo is the second Indian female celebrity to have a wax model at Madame Tussauds. The latest to join this elite list is Madhuri Dixit. After her going the family way, the for-

mer queen of Bollywood was rarely seen in the media. However, of late it seems the dancing diva is back to doing what her first love is— acting. Known as the dhak dhak girl, her 1,000 watt smile, and graceful moves still make millions of hearts go aflutter. Now, Madhuri’s fans have one more reason to celebrate apart from her comeback into the industry. On March 2012 Madame Tussauds will dazzle with the diva’s smile when they will unveil her wax statue at the London wax museum.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Messi is Player of the Year ZURICH: Lionel Messi’s exploits with Barcelona won him the World Player of the Year award for an unprecedented third year in a row on Monday at the age of 24. The Argentine swept home with 47.88 per cent of the votes in the survey among national team coaches, captains and selected media, receiving the trophy from former Brazil striker Ronaldo, himself a three-times winner of the award though not successively. Although FIFA listed only the players’ nationality when they published the full results, it was clearly Messi’s stunning performances for Barcelona which earned him the plaudits. Messi, followed by Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona team mate Xavi in the poll, was last season’s top scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals in Barca’s triumphant campaign and netted 31 times as they won La Liga. By contrast, he was roundly criticised after Argentina, hosting the Copa America, went out in the quarter-finals to Uruguay in July. Meanwhile, Uruguay’s exploits in winning the Copa America failed to earn them a nomination in the coach and players’ shortlists, or even a mention in the team of the year. Uruguay coach Oscar Washington Tabarez was fifth in the coach of the year poll, won by Barcelona’s Pep Guardiola. Manchester United’s Alex

2014 and we have to improve a lot but we will get there.”

Brazil and Santos forward Neymar won the award for the goal of the year, while Ferguson took the FIFA presidential award Ferguson was second and Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho third. Former France captain Michel Platini said afterwards Messi would still have to shine for Argentina before he could be considered among the greats. “Look at Diego Maradona, everyone remembers what he did in 1986, nobody remembers so much what he did with Napoli, with Barcelona,” Platini, president of UEFA, told reporters. “It’s still the World Cup which still sticks in people’s minds. “Messi will always be great with or without the World Cup… but the World Cup does something special.” Before the ceremony, Messi, who has played in two World Cups and seen Argentine lose in the quarter-finals to Germany on both occasions, admitted Argentina were not at their best. “The reality is that we are very far from being the best national

Brazil and Santos forward Neymar won the award for the goal of the year, a stunning effort in a Brazilian championship match against Flamengo, while Ferguson took the FIFA presidential award for outstanding service to the sport. The ceremony, co-presented by former Netherlands striker Ruud Gullit, also featured Japan’s Homare Sawa being voted women’s player of the year, ending a run of five successive wins for Brazil’s Martha. Norio Sasaki of Japan won the women’s soccer Coach of the Year award after his side won the World Cup. Beforehand, Martha had made her familiar appeal for more support for Brazilian women’s football. Despite her personal awards, Brazil have never won a World Cup or Olympic title and does not have a professional women’s league. “I do what I can, but it has to come from everyone, especially from the media, because without media there is no sponsorship, and from the federation,” she said. “There are lots of people who could do something to improve the structure of women’s football in our country, we have been pushing for a long time but it doesn’t just depend on us.”

City buoyant despite United defeat Brendan McLoughlin

MANCHESTER: Costel Pantilimon says Manchester City have emerged from the FA Cup loss to Manchester United with their confidence intact as they prepare to face Liverpool in a League Cup semi-final first-leg clash on Wednesday. The Premier League leaders saw their four-pronged trophy bid ended with a 3-2 defeat to rivals Manchester United in Sunday’s thrilling FA Cup third-round showdown at the Etihad Stadium. However, City at least emerged from the contest with their heads held high having fought back from a 3-0 deficit with 10 men following skipper Vincent Kompany’s 12thminute dismissal. And goalkeeping understudy Pantilimon, who was handed a rare start ahead of Joe Hart, insists their self-belief has not been dented because of the way they fought back. “It has not damaged our confidence,” he said. “It was an interesting game, but losing a player after 10 min-

Manchester City’s Romanian goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon watches the action during the English FA Cup football match between City and Manchester United at The Etihad Stadium in Manchester, AFP utes is not normal. It was a foul but a normal foul and not a direct red card. “We were surprised that the referee gave a red card after 10 minutes. At this level it is not normal and when you play a team like United it is important you have 11 men. But this is football and any-

thing can happen. In the second half we played better, scored two goals and had a chance to get the draw.” City have appealed against Kompany’s red card and will discover on Tuesday whether they have been successful. At present, the Belgium inter-

national will be missing for their next four matches having already been sent off once this season, meaning he would miss both legs of the League Cup semi as well as league matches against Wigan and Tottenham. Having been selected in goal for City’s domestic cup games, Pantilimon hopes to have done enough to keep his place to face Kenny Dalglish’s team. “The manager decides which 11 go on the pitch and I hope to be in there,” he said. “We have both (he and Hart) trained very well, and train for the team, to win trophies. “The team is very good and we all want to be in this team.” Meanwhile, Craig Bellamy says Liverpool will be out for revenge against his former club following their recent 3-0 defeat to City in the league. “For me, I didn’t believe the 3-0 scoreline was quite correct and this is not just me with my Liverpool head on, but if I was watching the game as a neutral we had 66 percent of possession, which is a lot for an away side,

especially against a team of Man City’s calibre. “It was all about taking opportunities. Pepe (Reina) made a mistake for the first goal but the other goals came from a corner and a penalty. “We were knocking on the door. Stewart (Downing) had a great chance and in the second half we had one or two chances we could have made more of. “It’s a two-legged match and we have to make sure we are still in the tie. We have the second leg at Anfield and this club knows all about two-legged games, so if we can get it back to Anfield still very much in the tie we will have a great chance of getting to Wembley. “This club is used to getting to semi-finals and finals and all we can do is give it our best and see where it takes us.” Downing has returned to training following his arrest by police on suspicion of assaulting his ex-girlfriend; however, his participation is in doubt. Luis Suarez serves the third game of an eightmatch ban. AFP

IPL-style hockey event in India put off NEW DELHI: A lucrative, but unsanctioned, field hockey tournament due to start this month along the lines of cricket’s Indian Premier League has been postponed, organisers said on Monday. IHF officials said the WSH will now begin on February 29, three days after the qualifiers end on February 26. “We did not want to put the national players who had signed up with us to any trouble,” IHF president RK Shetty told the Press Trust of India news agency. “I want them to play in the Olympic qualifiers and I will be happy if India qualifies for the London Olympics.” One of the richest events in the sport, with prize and appearance money topping $3 million, the WSH had attracted

top players from India and a few from overseas in a franchisebased contest. But the event did not have the support of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), which warned that any player taking part would be banned from international tournaments like the Olympics. The world governing body opposed the WSH because it was backed by the IHF and not the officially recognised Hockey India. Indian players, who are not paid fees for national duty and saw the WSC as a way to secure their financial future, had been caught in the crossfire between the two rival bodies.

PERTH: Australian wicket-keeper batsman feels India “break quicker than any other team in the world” when things are not going their way. Haddin’s remark comes in the wake of his side’s convincing win over a fragile India in the first two Tests of the four-match series. “We spoke about a bit of that when we were batting. The longer we could keep them out on the field the bigger chance we had of breaking them. We know this side can be as fragile as any team in the world if things aren’t going their way and they can turn on each other and the media turns on them pretty quick,” said Haddin of the side which had to field for long in Australia’s first innings score of 659 for four in the first innings at Sydney. “We knew if we could keep them out there and put the numbers like we did on the board we knew we would get the rewards because they break quicker than anyone in the world,” Haddin was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald. Australia have also not let Sachin Tendulkar score his 100th international despite the little master being in good form. Tendulkar has scored 226 runs at an average of 56.5 in the first two Tests, without the elusive century. Haddin revealed how Australia have been successful in putting Tendulkar under pressure. “What we have found is if we can build enough pressure on him he wants to score and he wants to feel bat on ball and he wants to get into a rhythm. We find if we can push him a little wider, make him feel for the ball a bit we can build enough pressure to get a chance and it has worked in the last two Tests,” said Haddin. On Tendulkar’s much-awaited hundred, Haddin said, “There has been a lot of talk about his hundredth hundred but from our point of view it is our job to make sure he doesn’t get it in this series.” The third Test begins here on Friday. o give youngsters from rural areas a platform to showcase their talent in the gentleman’s game, which has now become a ‘rich’ man’s game: This was the aim of the U-19 T20 National championship, dignitaries at the inauguration of the event said. But after the teams paraded by the dais and were welcomed, the focus of their speech changed: It was about how two nations are going to get closer through cricket. That Pakistan is participating is what brought this shift of focus. Apart from Pakistan, there are teams from Malaysia and Sri Lanka playing here. But the new entrant commanded attention more than anyone there. Every dignitary present there played the affable host: V Hanumantha Rao MP thanked the Pakistan team for accepting the CFI’s invitation to play. He also thanked governments of both nations, and for the smooth processing of visas for our neighbours, Foreign Minister SM Krishna and Home Minister P Chidambaram in particular. He also mentioned that the Indian embassy worked on a Friday, which for it is a holiday, to issue the players visas. He hoped cricket will help in fostering ties of love and peace with Pakistan. State Industries Minister Geeta Reddy welcomed all heartily. She extolled on the virtues of sports and said that every sportsperson is an ambassador for peace and friendship. While welcoming the players assembled, City Police Commissioner AK Khan said they should check out the historic city that is Hyderabad making use of the

pleasant weather. Before the inauguration, he batted for a couple of overs and showed his cricketing skills. Hanumantha Rao was so impressed that he said Khan would be invited to play if a tourney is conducted for senior citizens. Quick came Khan’s reply, “I am game even to take on youngsters,” triggering smiles around. The first match was between Hyderabad, last year’s champs, and Pakistan. The dignitaries watched Hyderabad’s batting for some time and left. There was a motley crowd — not many in count — watching the match apart from the teams who were not playing then. Everyone seemed excited

that Pakistan was playing. When Maharashtra’s captain Yogesh Satputhe was asked about his feelings when his team would take on Pakistan on Tuesday, he said, “Let’s see. It’s interesting. After all, it’s Pakistan we are going to play. Obviously the mood will be high and we will want to do our best.” On queries about being hosts and sportsmanship, he said, a bit charged up, “If they show it, we will reciprocate.” One does not find anything foreign about the Malaysian team. Only frequently did they talk in Malay; mostly their banter was in Tamil in a different accent: Many of them are descendants of

immigrants from Sri Lanka or Tamil Nadu. Fourteen-year-old Satya said he comes to India every year to visit his grandparents. Walking by the ropes, I found some Maharashtra players and a Pakistani player (who was not in the playing XI) chatting. The hosts seemed very comfortable that I joined them, but our neighbour, who refused to give his name, seemed a bit uncomfortable and refused to talk when I told him I am a reporter. But with time, he opened up and started cracking jokes. One Maharashtra player impersonated Nana Patekar. “Aata Maji Satakli,” quipped our friend from beyond the border, which made everyone

VENUS WILLIAMS OUT OF AUSTRALIAN OPEN WASHINGTON: Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams withdrew from the Australian Open on Monday as she struggles to return from the autoimmune disease Sjogren's syndrome. In a posting on her website, the US star said that she has been making progress and plans to return to WTA Tour play in February, when events begin in the United States. "I regret to announce that I am withdrawing from the 2012 Australian Open," Williams said on her website. "After several months of training and treatment, I am making steady progress to top competitive form.

"My diet and fitness regimen have allowed me to make great strides in terms of my health and I am very close to being ready to return to WTA competition. I have every intention to return to the circuit in February." Williams, whose ranking has slipped to 100th in the world, pulled out of last week's WTA event in Auckland because of the illness, which saps her energy and causes pain in her joints. World number one Caroline Wozniacki said Williams's health was the most important thing. "Venus has played for many years, but she's been unlucky with the virus thing," Wozniacki said at the Sydney

International. "I'm not completely sure what it is exactly, but the most important thing is the health. Tennis is a game but most of all, the most important thing is that you're healthy and she'll be 100 per cent healthy by February." Williams, 31, is not the only member of her family in doubt for the first Grand Slam event of 2012. Younger sister Serena, a 13-time Grand Slam singles champion, pulled out of last week's event at Brisbane with a sprained ankle. AFP

laugh, and pass around high fives. They later took pictures with the Pakistani player. The match went on to be interesting. Hyderabad had posted 138 and Pakistan was steadily chasing after a shaky start. When they played shots everyone cheered. There was high drama when a couple of Pakistani wickets fell in the 18th over. But a couple of boundaries brought back the Pakistanis in the game. At last, it came to five runs from the last ball for Pakistan to win; like in the final of the AustralAsia cup in Sharjah in 1986 in which Miandad had to score four off the last ball to win. Irfan Haider just did what Miandad did; he hit the last ball for a six and won the opener of the event for the visitors. Whatever crowd was left showed excellent gamesmanship. They cheered the victors wholeheartedly. Muhammed Shahzad Qureshi, the Pakistan coach, who looked tired at the inaugural function though every bit courteous, was elated. “It’s a fantastic thing, not because we beat Hyderabad. We were dead tired having had to travel 34 hours through out. We just arrived in time for the inaugural function. Despite that we won. My boys did well.” The Pakistan team’s travel schedule was derailed, as they got their visas a day late. “But that’s okay,” said Qureshi. Asked about being invited to play here, he said, “We are very happy we could be here. I believe strongly that cricket can bring our two nations closer.” There was proof for his belief: After the match, players of Hyderabad and Pakistan shared the same table at lunch, chatting gaily while chewing their food.

A Short Guy’s success story way he could have celebrated his birthday, adding that lack of inches should give the kids selfconfidence and the will power to succeed. “If you are not tall, the importance of having the selfconfidence and believing in you becomes even more important. You are capable of doing anything you wanted to do. These kids remind me of the time I was growing up. Even If I don’t share the same culture with them, I see the stigma is the same — short guys are not expected to play a game that is normally played by six and seven-foot tall guys. I heard the same line when I was growing up. So you give these guys some hope and inspiration, they can go out there and

Bogues, all of five feet three inches (1.60 metres), played for 14 years in the world’s toughest basketball league before retiring in 2001 NEW DELHI: Muggsy Bogues, the shortest player to have competed in the NBA, has dispelled the perception of millions of diminutive Indians who think they can’t be good at basketball. He sees potential in the “clueless” kids here and thinks they can go all the way up with proper guidance. Bogues, all of five feet three inches (1.60 metres), played for 14 years in the world’s toughest basketball league before retiring in 2001. Spending his 47th birthday with school kids in the national capital, Boques, nick-

named “the Short Guy”, told that he could relate to the shortstatured Indians and how they can go about it if they are serious about taking up basketball. “I was told that I was not going to make it and that I should try something else as my height was not enough for basketball. I was told why am I wasting my time, that’s precisely why I want to tell the kids here that they should let all that stuff pass over their heads, let it go out,” Bogues told in an interview. Bogues summed by saying that being in India was the best

play,” said Bogues. Kids who turned up for the NBA clinic at a popular school here were left awestruck as Bogues taught them how to dribble, pass and shoot. The Baltimore-born hoopster saw some raw talent with zero knowledge of the game. “You see some potential out there, both in the boys and girls. It is a matter of keep working at it from a young age as opposed to when they are 17-18 years old. The more information you are going to give them, the more

excited they will be about the game. Especially when they start doing things they thought they could never do. That is what happened today, I explained to them what the game is all about, and they got excited.” Bogues stressed the importance of identifying your strengths early. “You can be short and slow, and you can be short and fast but without knowing much about the game. They have got to realise their strengths. I understood my plus points very early, that quickness and passing were my strengths. The kids here don’t know what their strengths are right now, they need to be nursed carefully.” IANS
