ord Meier Klodt, the acting ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany poses an impressive picture of confidence on his first visit to India. As part of the Infinite Opportunities initiatives to strengthen the Indo-German ties, he joins us for a tete-atete on what this visit means, and how he believes the future of the association of the two nations looks like. Meier’s opening statement is reflective of his contentment in his role. He tells us, “Being in the diplomatic service, it is a treat to get opportunities like this. And my visit to India has tremendous importance in the global context.”

Sharing his views on the education system, Meier tells us, “In the last two years, there has been a

40 per cent increase in the number of Indian students coming to Germany.” Meier shares his perspectives on tourism, which he believes needn’t be promoted on the oft used platform of television as a medium. He opines,

“Sometimes, you have to look for unusual ways. Recently, Don 2 was shot in Berlin, which is a great way to showcase the country. Today, Indian tourists are becoming demanding and want to see more than what is offered. This is due to the collaborative work of Germany and India.” Undoubtedly, German excellence in the automobile sector is well-known, and India is no exception. “All the big names in the automobile industry are in India. Apart from the more visible brands, there are a lot of other associations,” says Meier. With the Euro 2012 going on, Meier is upbeat. “The team is great, but I hope they are not complacent. I hope they continue where they ended. If they are too successful, there will be too many latenights for me!” he smiles.

ll these days the police always claimed that it was their duty to serve the public. But going a step further is the South Zone DCP Akun Sabharwal, who recently launched a new programme for the benefit of the public called ‘Hum aapke Madadgaar’ in all the 17 police stations under his jurisdiction. As part of the programme each police station has set up a separate reception to receive complaints from residents and is manned by homeguards. The reception functions from 11 am to 5 pm and the policemen have been instructed to take cognisance of every complaint received. Launched on June 1, the programme has already registered 120 complaints of various natures in all the police stations. “We have appointed a sub inspector as the nodal officer to personally pursue all the complaints lodged in the south zone and care has been taken to appoint three women officers as receptionists as well,” said Akun Sabharwal. He went on to add that earlier people found it hard to lodge a complaint with a police station due to the absence

of the concerned officer. “This inconvenienced the public, which is why we decided to introduce this programme,” he explained. “Earlier too there was a similar programme in Andhra Pradesh called Sannihitam. However, for some reason the project came to an end. So all we’re doing is revive it, especially for residents of the Old City. The Central Zone launched this programme three years back and it has been very successful and received a good response,” he revealed. Incidentally, at the time the Central Zone launched this programme Sabharwal was the DCP of the zone. The DCP has also issued a strict warning to all policemen to take all kind of complaints from the public and not turn anyone away. “We have given them a special training for two days so they can handle the public in a courteous manner. Since we draw our salaries from the tax payer’s money, it is our duty to take of them. We should not ignore their complaints and should take immediate action in favour of the innocents,” he added. When quizzed about the existence of middle men and peace committees, Sabharwal assured that the police have been warned not to entertain any such people and to take whatever action that has to be taken as per the law.

Cry them a river

Making children work is condemnable. But the worst forms of child labour reflect a depravity in our society that needs attention. Our development is really the saga of sweat, blood and tears of invisible children

PADMINI C

padmini.c@postnoon.com

“M

any things can wait, the child cannot. Now is the time his bones are being formed, his mind is being developed. To him, we cannot say tomorrow; his name is today,” Gabriela Mistral, Nobel Laureate, had said. From December to June of each year, there is no sign of life in Western Orissa. There are no children playing, no women going about their household chores, no men going to work in these poor districts of Koratpur, Bolangir and Kalahandi. In fact, the only proof that there ever existed any habitation in these areas, is a recurring sight of the old and the infirm. Where are their young and their children? Here. In the towns of cities of our State, as the sweat and blood that make up our brick kiln industry. These people have been leased as “units” by their sardars, for six months. A “unit” being a family of husband, wife and young child(ren), for whom the going price is anywhere between `8,000 to `10,000. Paid and bought for by their employers here — the owners of the 250 or more brick kilns in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medak and Nalgonda districts. Child welfare NGOs put the number of those who are traded across the border each year at 1,00,000 and 2,00,000 people. These workers possess a specific skill-set and an invaluable asset — their children, whose light-weight and nimble hands are vital to the drying of bricks. The industry is seasonal, the targets deadly. Each family has to make 20,000 to 25,000 bricks each week. Last season, ‘units’ were paid `180 to `200 for every 1,000 bricks, a far cry from the `367 which is the minimum wage. Amounting to a measly `8,000 for a month’s work of 14-15 hours a day. “They are ideal because they are destitute and afraid, unable to speak the language and unaware of their rights. They live in 5 feet x 5 feet huts, with no access to even basic health and sanitation facilities, education or nutrition. Almost all of these children suffer from acute malnutrition, eye-ailments, skinallergies and some even lung cancer due to the inhalation of coal fumes. They don’t make minimum wages, have no one to fight for them and so they live and die within the boundary line drawn by their employers. This

Postnoon’s Stand

T

he ILO global campaign to eliminate the worst forms of child labour by 2016 is an impossible dream for India. Even in this day and age, children are routinely being bought and sold as if they were cattle. Employers are owners, of their bodies, their souls and their futures. Most cases booked against them are for violation of minimum wages. That is ridiculous. The children should not be working in the first place. There should be no negotiation. Offenders should be treated as criminals and prosecutions against them should set precedents in a way that evokes mortal fear among anyone who engages in the practice. Our indifference towards children, especially orphans and migrants, is bound to cost us heavily. After all, as Karl Menniger said, “Whats done to children, they will do to society.”

is, without exception, the story of every brick-kiln in the State,” says programme co-ordinator A Kishan, who has been for the past three years, studying interstate migration for the NGO — Prayas Centre for Labour Research & Action. All these facts are common knowledge among the powers that be. In fact, those who matter know about it much too well. Rajiv Vidya Mission under the Sarvya Siksha Abhiyan, even has Special Residential Bridge Courses for these children, and yet there is no action by the Labour or any other department, against these employers. “They send nine and 10 year olds to these courses as a compromise but keep the older ones because they are much too valuable at the kilns. No cases are filed against the brick mafia because they have political affiliations

and power. Every time anyone asks questions and demands answers, they are attacked, harassed and threatened with death. So now little is done about it,” says Kishan, matter-offactly. For their part, officials are mostly defensive. “I wouldn’t say its eliminated, but child labour has practically reduced in the factories due to awareness among employers. It exists mostly only in seasonal factories,” G Balakishore, director of factories said. Meanwhile, according to ILO, there are over 2 million children in the country toiling away in hazardous industries. A report compiled by MV Foundation from various sources such as the UNICEF and the Human Rights Watch, too paints a shocking picture. It reveals, 53 per cent of 15.60 crore

enrolled children in school dropout and a majority of them join in agriculture. More shockingly, it states that while the government of India estimates the bonded labour in the country at 353,000 adults and children, NGOs put the figure anywhere from 2.6 million (adult and child) workers to 15 million bonded child farm workers. In the State, children constitute 88 per cent of total labour force in cotton-seed production. Working 10-13 hours a day exposed to poisonous pesticides have the children complain of headaches, weakness, disorientation, convulsions and respiratory problems, symptoms of their nervous systems being compromised. “If you think about it, the thing that aam aadmi struggles for all his life — roti (agriculture), kapda (cotton-seed) aur makaan (construction) — are the sweat, blood and tears of children. What can be more tragic than that?”asks Venkat Reddy, national convenor of the NGO, MV Foundation. While these epic scale horror stories are more easier to identify, the more telling tales are the untold sagas of every day life violence and abuse towards children. Which is why all NGOs and those engaged in child protection are increasingly protesting to the classification of hazardous and non-hazardous labour. “All child labour is hazardous. We recently rescued several children from a bakery which was a complete eye-opener for us. We couldn’t enter because it was so hot and small children were standing shirtless in this blistering heat, working on huge battis (tandoori ovens). If they tipped and fell over, you wouldn’t even find their bones. That’s how pathetic their working conditions are. They fought tooth and nail insisting that these were their own children. We didn’t relent. We found out that they were orphans that the employers had brought from Tamil Nadu and therefore prosecuted the employers. But these cases, as are domestic-labour cases, are many and are extremely hard to identify,” says P Padmavati of Child Welfare Committee, Rangareddy. With all its loopholes, the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986 stands clear on the issue. No child under the age of 14 shall be employed in hazardous work. More over, the Right to Education Act further states that all children between 6-14 will have free and compulsory education making it obvious that a child’s place is at school. But laws seem to make little difference in lieu of the absence of political will and public conscience.

FOCUS SUNDAY, JUNE 10, 2012 After a brief lull, he came up with a few ideas and thus Dakshaa was born. “We started with developing Celebrity Apps for the singer Chinmayi, who became the first Indian musician to have an app on all iOS devices, and the international model, Hilary Rhoda. The App-Eco-system was a big success and orders started pouring in. Then we designed and developed a full scape AppEcosystem for the entertainment industry,” Naveen goes onto say. So what exactly does an App eco-system include? “The App-Ecosystem is an end to end management for any movie, celebrity or any digital entertainment product. For a new movie launch, we create buzz for it, by creating apps for it on all mobile devices. We keep the fans well informed by providing them news, engage them via Facebook, Twitter and other social media by mentioning trivia and conducting quizzes about the movie. We sell the movie’s music through the app and provide exclusive video content about the movie. Advanced features include group chat between cast/crew and the fans, live audio and video conferences through the app, etc.” Dakshaa has already tied up with quite a few celebrities in Tamil film industry such as Chinmayi, Madhan Karky, M Sasikumar and Ameer. The film industry isn’t exactly known for being tech savvy. How tough was it to sell your idea? “Most of the people aren’t tech savvy and they have no idea what an app is all about. But when they know about the app and its pros and cons, Celebrities are very excited and thrilled. It has never been a herculean task to convince a celebrity especially with a lot of fan base now using the Mobile Ecosystem,” Naveen confesses. He and his friend Keerthi, who’s the CTO and co-

romoting films, especially in the South, is a herculean task. Unlike Bollywood which boasts of huge marketing budgets, promotion of South Indian films is yet to take off in a big way. Celebrities still follow the traditional approach of giving interviews to the media and appearing in prominent events just ahead of a film’s release. The advent of Internet has caught the attention of the film fraternity and with people spending a lot more time surfing the Internet these days, it makes all the more sense to explore this

medium for film promotions as well. Dakshaa, a New York-based company, is one of the several firms which is betting big on this new trend. Naveen Varadarajan and his friend Keerthi founded the company in Manhattan, New York in June 2011 and already they have opened branches in Los Angeles and Chennai within a year. “I graduated from the London School of Economics with a degree in Information Systems and Management. Then I went on to do my Masters in Cinematography at the New York Film Academy. After cinematography, I took a step further and went onto learn 3D Cinematography at the Sony 3D Technology Center. This, I think, changed my life,” Naveen Varadarajan recalls. He worked as a trainee AD for Hellraiser : Revelations and went on to shoot few shots and the climax song for Pawan Kalyan’s Teen Maar last year.

Naveen founder of Dakshaa, are working on another idea which they have named Multiapplex. Naveen is extremely tight- lipped about this idea but reveals that it’s going to revolutionise the film industry. He’s quite confident that Dakshaa will reach out to a wider audience in the near future. “The film industry in the south have always been paving the way for newer technologies for a long time now. Technicians down south are the first to embrace new technology,” he says. Apart from managing the business at Dakshaa, he’s working at the Universal Studios for the $1 billion The Bourne Franchise. He attends classes at the UCLA in the evening and during the nights he spends his time working on his ideas at the Entertainment Technology lab. On weekends, he dons the hat of a cinematographer. “I love Multi tasking. Juggling between films and technology is something that I love. Filmmaking is my life and entertainment and technology are my passions,” he says signing off.

NEW DELHI: Three people, including

a woman, were arrested in connection with trafficking of a 42-year-old Delhi woman who was rescued from Ghaziabad, Delhi Police said Saturday. The woman, a domestic help and mother of two children living in north Delhi’s Mangolpuri, was rescued Saturday. She was missing since April 20.

said his party will pay a price if it shunned principles for the sake of power. “Our politics must be based on principles. To retain power at any cost is unprincipled politics,” the former Bharatiya Janata Party president told reporters here. Rajnath Singh described himself as a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). About Sanjay Joshi’s ouster, he said: “It is a party decision and the BJP chief could be the right person to answer it.”

MELBOURNE: An elite Australian college has sparked a race controversy after it organised a “colonial- themed” party where Indians wearing traditional garments served guests present at the event. The St Paul’s college had organised its yearly “upscale” dinner with an ‘end of the British raj’ theme, asking guests to come dressed in “white tie of colonial uniform”.

Ex-Army officer ends life after killing family in US WASHINGTON: A 47-year-old former Indian Army officer, wanted for a suspected murder of a Kashmiri human rights lawyer, on Sunday killed his wife and two of their children before committing suicide in his California home, police said. Avtar Singh called Selma police around 6:15 am and told them that he had killed members of his family and was

going to kill himself, the msnbc.com quoted the Fresno County Sheriff ’s Office as saying. Local police sought aid from Fresno County sheriff ’s officials because Singh had military experience, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said in a statement. Sheriff ’s officials tried to contact Singh verbally and by phone, but he did not respond, Mims said. When a sheriff ’s SWAT

team entered the home after first examining it with a robot, members found the bodies of Singh, his wife and two children, ages 3 and 15, Mims said,

adding a wounded teen was also found in the home. The teen was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition with life-threatening wounds, the statement said. However, motive behind his killing spree was not known immediately. Singh, an Indian army major in the 1990s, is accused in the March 1996 killing of human rights lawyer Jaleel Andrabi in Srinagar. Bihar seeks help over killer-disease PATNA: Bihar Saturday sought help from the central government to tackle a mysterious disease that has killed 81 children in Muzaffarpur, Gaya and Patna districts during the past fortnight, officials said. “We expect central government help and support to check and control the mysterious disease,” Health Minister Ashwini Choubey said. Seven more children died in Muzaffarpur in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 37 in the district. Ten children have died in Gaya. Besides, 34 children have died in the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) in the past 15 days. Dr. Sujata Choudhary, head of the department of paediatric in the PMCH, said 80 children suffering from the disease were admitted to the hospital, of which 34 died. Health officials here said that over four dozen children suffering from “a mysterious disease” had been admitted to hospitals in the other two districts. Choubey visited hospitals in Muzaffarpur Friday night and Gaya Saturday to take stock of the situation. He denied reports that the children were dying of suspected encephalitis and said the department was yet to determine the exact cause of deaths. “It may be due to acute encephalopathy syndrome, including heat stroke,” Chobey said. Some doctors and health officials have reportedly said the children were showing symptoms similar to encephalitis. IANS

Rupee slump hits Indian students abroad Saroj Kumar Pattnaik

NEW DELHI: The depreciating rupee has no doubt cast a cascading effect on the economy but the worst-hit are Indian students studying abroad or those planning for higher studies in foreign universities as they have to shell out more money compared to what it was required a year ago. As the rupee has weakened by about 20 per cent since the

beginning of the calender year, overseas education costs have also gone up almost equivalently. “The conditions have turned ‘foreign education’ a luxury affair, not something for the middle class to think as parents have to slog out a lot more money compared to earlier to get their children into good universities,” says Neha Racch, senior counsellor at Apex Consultants. The rupee coupled with a

slowing global economy, strict visa norms and stringent immigration policies have made the

prospects of overseas education more gloomy, she says. “And the impact is quite visible as there has been about 20 per cent decline in the number of students applying forhigher courses in the US, the UK and other countries,” Rachh said. The rupee has fallen by 20 per cent against the dollar since January and by as much as 24 per cent since last year. Moreover, the steep deprecia-

tion has made the rupee a much weaker currency against some major currencies. The rupee has fallen by around 18 per cent against the Singapore dollar, 17 per cent against the Canadian dollar, about 16 per cent against the British pound and 13 per cent against the Australian dollar. Rupee slump affects middle class families more, as usually they take education loans for PTI payments of fees.

DAMASCUS: Army shelling and gunfire killed at least 83 civilians in protest towns on Saturday, a watchdog said, as Russia pushed its idea of an international conference including Iran to end the bloodshed in Syria. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also stressed that Moscow would “not sanction the use of force at the United Nations Security Council.” His proposal came as worldwide anger grows over the crackdown by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime on a revolt in which more than 13,500 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since March 2011. Nine women and three children were among 20 people killed in a pre-dawn bombardment of a residential neighbourhood in the southern city of Daraa, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Dozens more were wounded, some of them seriously, in the city which was the birthplace of the uprising against Assad’s rule, the Britishbased watchdog said. Meanwhile, UN observers who visited the village of AlKubeir, where at least 55 people were killed earlier this week, said they saw blood on the walls and “a strong stench of burnt flesh.” The Al-Kubeir incident prompted Western governments to launch a push for tough new sanctions against Damascus. But Russia, along

Diplomats in New York said Britain, France and the United States would quickly draw up a Security Council resolution proposing sanctions against Syria following a grim report from the monitors on their visit to AlKubeir. EDITORIALS WHEN BOONS become banes Sometimes actions taken for good results may actually produce the opposite. A case in point are the amendments made to the Copyright Act. The bill passed by the Parliament mandates that film producers must pay royalty to creative people involved in the making of the movie; a one-time payment won’t suffice, but they must be paid every time the producers make profit from the product in various ways. The film fraternity has pointed out that this move will backfire, as producers will be tempted to hire ghost writers, get all the work done, pay them a small sum and bask in the glory of doing it all alone. But producers have decided not to exploit the “silver lining” that they see. What the government should do is to hold conference with everyone involved, especially with people like lyricist Javed Akthar, who has been championing the cause of artists, and weigh every option and come up with a practical solution that has no loopholes.

WHY WE LOVE... Sachin Tendulkar No one says no to anything free. We know of many instances where MPs and MLAs whine how less they get for the great service they render the country. Only recently it emerged that the Planning Commission had blasted `35 lakhs on renovating toilets. This is the same body that set the poverty line figure at `28 for an individual. And here comes Sachin Tendulkar who says he does not need the residence he is entitled to as a Rajya Sabha MP, as he stays in Mumbai and blocking a residence for him in Delhi is wasting the tax-payer’s money. He says he would pay for his stay when he comes to Delhi for RS sessions. Here’s a gentleman — on and off the field.

While reading the newspaper, an item in it drew me into a debate with my muse. Uninvited, she popped through my thoughts and demanded that I discus this particular piece at length. So I began by explaining the news to her. I: The Central government now wants Muslim cops in Muslimdominated areas. My muse: Why? How come the sudden bright idea? I: It was a recommendation of the Sachar Committee report. My muse: Oh, and when was this recommendation made? I: In November 2006. Why do you ask? My muse: Then, what is the great hurry almost five and a half years later? I: Oh I don’t know. The Union home secretary has written to all chief secretaries of states to implement the recommendation and submit a status report by the end of this June. My muse: So here we have another category of transfers added; husband-wife cases, overstaying, medical grounds, physically challenged and now Muslims for Muslim-dominated areas. I: So? What are you getting at? My muse: What if a Muslim cop does not want to be posted to Muslim-dominated area? And are there so many Muslim cops? I: When the government has woken up to the need for protection of Muslims, why are you nagging away and finding petty drawbacks? My muse: Sorry to nag. But what does the government hope to achieve by posting a single Muslim cop in a Muslim-dominated area? I: It is a confidence-building measure. The Muslim cop will be more approachable to his community fellows and he will

understand the nuances of their sensibilities, their situation and he will have empathy for them. My muse: Oh! You mean to say he should empathise with criminals too. And pray, what is the difference between a Muslim criminal and a Hindu criminal or a Christian one or a Buddhist one or...? I: Hold it! Hold it! Don’t go on and on. It’s just that the government feels that if a Muslim cop is there in a Muslim locality, people, I mean Muslims, will feel protected and will have confidence that the police station is not against them. My muse: And what can a single cop do in a police station to help the Muslims? And what will the other cops be doing? I: You saw what happened in Gujarat? And you know what the general perception is about the role of cops during communal riots? My muse: Oh! Is this single cop expected to run around protect-

ing all the Muslims in the locality he is posted at? And what will the other cops be doing? Will they be cleaning and oiling their rifles and polishing their belts, buckles and shoes to do the drill? I: (In exasperation) What exactly do you want? When the government makes some effort you crib? When it does not you cry? What is it exactly that you want the government to do? My muse: No! No! I am very happy. The government declares holidays for Eid Meelad, and now posts a Muslim cop in Muslim areas. I truly appreciate the government’s concerns for its minorities. And I do appreciate that though Sacharji wanted this to happen in 2006 it has written letters now. The government was perhaps reading the committee’s recommendations till now. I: (As I had no answer to the muse’s wisecracks, I grumble) Okay smart pants, now you tell me what would you do to imple-

ment the report and build confidence among Muslims so that they are brought to the mainstream. My muse: I will ask you questions and you answer them? I: (brightening and thinking, I will have you now fellow) Yes shoot! My muse: Why is there no confidence in the Hindu policemen following the rule of law? Has the Home department taken steps to sensitise the general cop, be it Hindu or Muslim or any other, regarding the protection of the Muslims as citizens of this nation along with any other citizen? Does the government want to create a divide even among the bureaucracy on the basis of religion? What about the implementation of the other aspects of the Sachar report that will ultimately obviate such segregative requirements? I was stumped for answers.

BERLIN: Tired of the constant barrage of depressing headlines from the eurozone debt crisis, German economists have turned their skills to the rather more fun task of forecasting the European Championships. Using a variety of tongue-incheek models usually applied to complex questions of bond markets or credit default swaps, most analysts have ended up with far from earth-shattering tips, backing favourites Spain or Germany. The good news for people concerned for the future of the euro area is that the chances of a team from the 17-nation zone lifting Europe’s premier football trophy is a whopping 86 per cent, according to economists at DekaBank. Analysing the results of the past four European Championships and feeding it into a complex mathematical model, the economists came up with the prediction: “Along with Spain and the Netherlands, Germany is one of the favourites.” In a research note entitled

“Soccernomics”, boffins at ABN Amro said their work was done with a “quasi-serious approach.” “Because after all, football is the most important of all unimportant things. We certainly need some light relief these days. Europe — in particular the eurozone — has been engulfed in a crisis for two years now,” they added. ABN Amro crosschecked a country’s footballing record with its credit rating and concluded that Germany would be triumphant come the final of Europe’s top footballing competition on July 1. For the eurozone as a whole, however, the research note concludes: “From an economic perspective, the best outcome would be a French victory” as it would boost confidence in one of the shakiest “core” eurozone nations. Economists at UniCredit really went to town, feeding in macroeconomic data to complex mathematical models in a bid to predict the winner. They calculated the worth of each team based on the transfer market value of their players and decid-

Economists at the DIW institute in Germany spent their time analysing the market value of 382 football clubs from 25 European football leagues and cross-referencing the players’ worth with their end-of-season success measured in league points won. Their model also pointed to a Spanish victory, but

they thought Germany also had a good chance of winning. “This means that there is a significant risk that the German team will not make the quarterfinals” as they are in the same pool as top teams Portugal and the Netherlands, inevitably dubbed the “Group of Death.” ABN Amro noted that the past four major football tournaments have been won by countries now suffering economically. Euro 2004 was won by Greece, the World Cup in 2006 by Italy, while Spain won Euro 2008 and the World Cup in 2010. “Do sportspeople from countries that are struggling economically develop a winning mentality and do sportspeople from prosperous countries become lazier and less motivated?” asked the analysts. DekaBank analysts said they were looking to the Championships for a bit of light relief in the dark economic times. “In these times of euro crisis, Euro 2012 can distract us for a couple of weeks, make us forget our worries and bring countries together a bit,” they AFP said.

Monday will spotlight next-generation software for its coveted gadgets as it kicks off its annual gathering of developers whose applications are vital to the company’s success. The Internet buzzed with rumours about what the notoriously secretive maker of iPads, iPhones, iPods, and Macintosh computers will unveil at a keynote event marking the start of the five-day Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Analysts did not expect Apple to unveil any new devices, believing it will opt instead to focus on improvements to operating software and opportunities for developers to make even better “apps”. “What keeps people allegiant to and excited about their iPhones and iPads are all the new apps that are available,” said Forrester analyst Charles Golvin. “Appealing to the developers and continuing to enrich the set of tools and capabilities they have to build great new apps or enhance existing apps is absolutely critical.” WWDC comes less than two weeks before Google’s annual developers conference, which will be held in the same downtown San Francisco conference center. “It is a back and forth between Apple and Google in a battle for hearts and minds of developers; to be their priority,” Golvin said. “What Apple wants is for them to only develop for iOS,” he continued. “That is not realistic, but they can try to make sure all the exciting new things come to iPad and iPhone first and maybe get to the Android, and Google wants the opposite.” Google-backed Android software for mobile devices is the world’s leading smartphone platform and seen as the only formidable adversary for Apple. Banners for iOS 6, the next generation operating system for Apple mobile gadgets, were on display in the conference venue during the weekend. Analysts suspected iOS upgrades to include improving and maybe even extending Siri virtual assistant capabilities that were a hit after being introduced in the iPhone 4S. AFP

Wielding the camera ple who want to make it big in the industry, especially in the mainstream cinema. I aspire to be a person who would make a change through the films that I do, like my first major project WASHCost. A change in the society through movies is my aim and I’m working towards it, because money is not everything in life.

He wants his movies to do the talking. Meet Virender Goud, a budding filmmaker from the city, who aims to bring about a change in society

How did you get interested in filmmaking? As a kid, whenever I saw a movie with my family or friends, I remember them praising the hero and how he works. But I wanted to be the person who makes the hero shine and hence I entered this field.

Who are the people who inspire you?

How has the journey been till now? It has been a great journey uptil now. Not as smooth as I had anticipated it to be, but still it has been great. I am working on many projects right now and the future is looking great. It has been just two years into this field but I have learnt a lot.

What are the projects you are working on? Currently I’m working on a project called project WASHCost. It is sponsored by the Unesco and the government of Netherlands. This is basically a series of documentaries based on the pattern in which we consume the water and

For me a person who is striving to make the society better is my inspiration. With due respect to everyone, according to me, inspiration for anything and everything comes from people around you and not the greats of a field because you can connect to them and understand their troubles better.

What is your advice for other aspiring youngsters? Well, it is a challenging task. Considering the competition nowadays, it is tough to strike early. So, have some patience, wait for your turn, and once you get a chance, leave no stone unturned to make it big.

he early morning rays of the sun shine bright on the trees in the KBR park, giving the leaves a strange golden hue. Here to savour the freshness and the quiet, are the walkers and the joggers. What seems to be an otherwise calm and peaceful entity in Jubilee Hills, is broken by the sound of crying peacocks, and a few happy people laughing away. While some ‘throw their worries into the sky’, others share their jokes on a piece of paper. This is the Laughing Club — an organisation with more than 50 members, who come every morning to spread the joy of laughter. Ramachandra Reddy is one of the most active individuals in the group. He is 81, and he is as enthusiastic as any young member of the club. The secret to this he says is simple. “I live and enjoy life to the fullest.” Being the president of the Laughing Club, he says, has made his life more fulfilling than he could ever imagine. In his jogging shorts and a t-shirt, Reddy is the personification of liveliness and enthusiasm. He shares his experience with us, “Twenty years ago, the

KBR Park was not open to the public. A couple of us protested against this and filed 13 cases against the chief minister then, and won every single one of them. I remember the time we took a rally to Chandrababu Naidu’s house — looking behind, I feel happy to not have given up. There is a sense of satisfaction today because of that. Interestingly, the judges and forest officers who opposed us, come to walk today and greet us!” The Laughing Club started around 14 years back in Hyderabad and today has a list of members who swear by the benefits of simply laughing. Says Reddy, “Dr Madan Kataria, who was the brains behind this amazing club is all set to start a Laughing University in Bengaluru. This shows how important the organisation is today. There are different types of laughing, and we try all of them, including physical activities to make it a wholesome and benefitting initiative.” Reddy’s passion for a healthy living doesn’t stop with himself. He believes in spreading the joy of living, a healthy life to as many people as he meets. Which explains why, he strictly opposes any hike in the membership fees to access the KBR Park. He tells us, “There was a move to hike the fees of the park from `500 to `1,000. I was against it as I

WHILE SOME THROW THEIR WORRIES INTO THE SKY, OTHERS SHARE THEIR JOKES WRITTEN ON PAPER. THIS IS THE LAUGHING CLUB – AN CONGREGATION OF MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE, WHO COME EVERY MORNING TO SPREAD THE JOY OF LAUGHTER strongly believe that the park should be accessed by as many people as possible. I met the previous CM and convinced him to reduce the fee, which now thankfully is `800. For senior people like me, it still remains `500. At the end of our talk, as Reddy walks towards the exit gate, he is greeted by many walkers. It becomes increasingly obvious, the respect and gratitude that people have for the man who made it all possible. A friend of Reddy for over 50 years summarises it all, “Reddy is a friend for life, not just to me, but to many others. He embodies simplicity in living and a high quality in thinking. I am proud to still be associated with this man,” he says. The Laughing Club is open to all who are young in their minds.

he thirty years he spent in advertising, as Art director in agencies like Mudra and Lintas, gave him the time and skill to perfect his art. Today, Parameshwar is at the helm of establishing a tradition he hopes will continue long after him. At a time when the art of traditional calligraphy is teetering on the brink of extinction, Parmeshwar has perfected the art form to the extent of creating a new and distinguished genre that’s both traditional and contemporary. With minimalistic style and yet a mesmerising attention to detail, Parmeshwar has mastered the use of the nib to make it dance across the page in rhythmic and symbolic

harmony. Now, he has embarked on a journey to narrate the epic Ramayana through his works. “My aim is to tell the story in its simplest form, bringing out the character of the people through essential strokes. The restrictions of the form is the challenge that attracts me to it.” Parmeshwar attributes his inspiration to “the grammar of temple architecture, motifs in Indian ceremonial culture and its rich mythology.” Curator and art historian, Koeli Mukherjee says “Parameshwar's celebration of iconography, is a revelation of a new conduit, that weave together, memories of viewers from various parts of the country, with a single yarn of the shared tradition. He adds a novel perspective to the existing forms in narrating the epic.” Having completed his current series, Parmeshwar has his sights set on starting a new narrative on the Puri Jagannath temple.

hat began as a challenge to the category of “art” initiated by the Futurists and Dadaists in the 1910s and 1920s came to fruition with the performance art movements, one branch of which was

referred to as Happenings. Happenings involved more than the detached observation of the viewer; the artist engaged with Happenings required the viewer to actively participate in each piece. There was not a definite or

consistent style for Happenings, as they greatly varied in size and intricacy. This turn toward performance was a reaction against the long-standing dominance of the technical aesthetics of Abstract Expressionism and

was a new art form that grew out of the social changes occurring in the 1950s and 1960s. A main component of Happenings was the involvement of the viewer. Each instance a Happening occurred the viewer was used to add in an element of chance so, every time a piece was performed or exhibited it would never be the same as the previous time. The purpose of Happenings was to confront and dismantle conventional views of the category of “art.”

he Deccan Plateau, stretching over the entire Indian peninsula, is made of grey granite, one of the oldest and hardest rock formations in the world. Steaming lava cools, crystallises and pushes against the earth’s crust to form some magnificent rocks. Hyderabad, however, is losing its prehistoric rocks as it grows into an urban city. As one of India’s booming IT hubs, it has towering software companies and shiny new buildings. Thanks to its growing economy, most of its rocks have disappeared. But there are still some Hyderabadis who are trying to preserve some of these rocks. Entrepreneur Navall Girri is one of them. He tells us about his property in Banjara Hills that is now a luxury apartment. The most striking parts of the building are the huge boulders that jut out from the walls of the parking lot and the massive ones that sit so stunningly in his garden. “The property has so many beautiful rocks and old trees that we didn’t want to bring it down. We also wanted to maintain the unevenness of the land. So we racked our brains to come up with a plan that would-

n’t tamper with the trees or the land, something original, unlike the ones that already exist in Hyderabad,” he said. The Girris finally decided to opt for a younger artist— one that would be flexible and ready to experiment. Vivek Vijayshankar, a Bengalurubased, was a promising choice. “We were really looking for something different, but practical,” Girri explained. “I am a conscious, old-school

Hyderabadi,” he said, chuckling. “So I wanted to keep the most treasured part of Hyderabad from being destroyed,” he added. The Girris have left most of the rocks on their property untouched, only building around them. “Hyderabad is the city of rocks, and only then the city of pearls,” said Girri, grinning. “It wasn’t just us. Vijayshankar agreed too. He felt the rocks should be a part of the plan as well. But it was definitely not

easy to build. It took a lot of planning and effort,” he said. Besides the Girris, Narendra Luther, a retired IAS officer, also has a house in Banjara Hills that is built around a massive 25 feet-high rock. Even with several boulders in the compound, his house was built without destroying a single one. Luther is the president of the Society to Save Rocks — an organisation that aims to preserve rock formations in the Deccan Plateau. Having started in 1992, it has grown to include 300 members today. Among others, it won the Heritage Award in 2003 and the National Tourism Award in 2003 for being the best NGO in Tourism. Though geologists estimate that the rock formations in Hyderabad are around 2,500 million years old, landowners and developers have turned a blind eye. Some may argue that development is inevitable but our own Hyderabadis have given us food for thought. Be it for the aesthetic appeal or for the environment, let’s hope the city has some of its rocks left in a decade from now.

Urban kids prone to allergy

Home-cooked food benefits

A

ucking into a home-cooked meal can make you live longer, new research says. Researchers from the Monash University, the National Defence Medical Centre and the National Health Research Institute, Taiwan, found that people who cooked at home at least five times a week were 47 per cent more likely to still be alive after 10 years.

latest study suggests that urban children are more prone to food allergies rather than their rural counterparts. It is the environment in which they’re brought up which decides their resistance levels and capacities. In urban centres 9.8 per cent of children fall prey to food allergies whereas the case for rural children the figure stands at 6.2 per cent.

efore this, I firmly believed that money can’t buy happiness. But my visit to Khan Saab had me rethinking about that statement. It’s true! Nothing works better on your mood than a plate of the most delectable delicacies. Now, there is some food that cannot be recreated in any other form except its original and the menu at Khan Saab reads Indian ethnic food, page after page. With the menu quite in place, the ambience of the restaurant speaks grandness in and around the massive space. Well lit up with candle chandeliers, the expansive dining room is beautifully set up with rich brown teak wood furniture with silver crockery ornamenting each table. A carpeted stairwell (much like the one you have seen in the dining hall in Titanic) takes you to the first floor which is reserved

for a large party or gettogethers. While sipping on some Badam Thandai which was a concoction of dry fruits and aromatic spices with a spicy after taste, we glanced at the extensive, bookish menu. What stands out at Khan Saab is that it seems to have achieved the right balance in recreating dishes served in the durbars of the emperors of the North-west frontier. The best part about it is that it has an elaborate spread of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. To start with, we were

served Palak chaat which was fresh spinach leaves dipped in batter and fried to the crisp with a topping of refrigerated yoghurt and flavoured with tamarind chutney and sprinkled with sev. Restrain from filling yourself up with it. The Cheez Subz Di Kurkure was crunchy wheat warq rolls filled with cheese, mushroom and potato. As we lay back, letting some of the starters settle in, sipping on some more of the Badam Thandai, the crunchy Gosht ke Gappe arrived. Filled with cooked, tender mutton stuffed

in a poori, they were quite interesting. Now, Khan Saab is popular for their juiciest kebabs and we didn’t forget to order that. We tried every dish that had kebab at the end. So whether it was the Tunde Kebab which was a mix of exotic spices in patties of meat grounded to perfection or the Malai Chandi Kebab which was char-grilled morsels of flavourful chicken served with lemon juice and melted butter. They were all just simply mouth-watering! As much as we were stuffed and ready to pass out, the main course looked delectable and definitely worth a try. The Rajwada Raj Gosht, a delicacy from Rajasthan had succulent pieces of lamb soaked in a flavourful, thick gravy served with a condiment of butter naan. Satisfied and much rounder at the end of our gluttonous ordeal, it’s guaranteed that you need an unlimited appetite if you choose to dine at Khan Saab. Bon apetit!

1. Heat the oil, add ginger garlic paste, and all other masalas stir then add thick curd and cook for a while. 2. Add tomato puree, cook for one or two minutes, add crushed onions, stir for sometime. 3. Add required quantity of water, boil it and slowly add kofta potlis. 4. Simmer it for 3 to 5 minutes, gently shaking it. When cooked remove the kofta potlis. 5. Pour the gravy (medium consistency) on the koftas, garnish with mint leaves, chillies and (cream - optional).

Sunny Deol a thorough gentleman: Tannishtha A ctress Tannishtha Chatterjee, who has earlier worked with Abhay Deol, has now teamed with his elder cousin Sunny for her first commercial Hindi film I Love New Year. And she is all praise for the actor. “Abhay chooses his films a little differently from Sunny. Sunny is a far more mainstream star in a different generation. I had an amazing time working with him. Sunny Deol is a thorough gentleman,” Tannishtha said. The actress, who has earlier worked with Abhay in the 2009 film Road,

Movie, says both the brothers are different to work with. “They come from different traditions of cinema. Sunny is much senior to us. When we saw his films, it was bit of a star thing and Abhay is like a friend. But I think Sunny is so wonderfully humble and such a gentleman and this is something that Abhay had told me before I started working with Sunny,” Tannishtha said. I Love New Year will release very soon this year, she said, adding that she “Didn’t know what to expect from a IANS Bollywood film”.

Ranbir imitates Kareena! A ctor Ranbir Kapoor was in for a surprise when hosts Ayushmann Khurrana and Chitrangada Singh asked him to imitate his family members, including actress Kareena Kapoor. Like a sport he didn’t shy away from succumbing to the demand, despite his father Rishi Kapoor sitting in the first row. “Tum log mujhe pitwaoge (I’ll be bashed for this),” said Ranbir reacting on the request.

Ranbir mimicked his great grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor by saying one of his dialogues from film Mughal-eAzam (Salim! Anarkali ko deewar mein chunwa do). He sang a song from his grandfather Raj Kapoor’s film Kiski muskurahato pe ho... and danced like father Rishi Kapoor on Paisa yeh paisa. However, the audiences were in splits as he imitated Kareena on her song Bebo main bebo.

Great time for actresses in Indian cinema

P

riyanka Chopra admits that Indian cinema remains male- dominated but says changed perspectives towards female actors have helped current times become great times for actresses to work in the industry. “The film industry is male dominated but it’s hugely fascinating to see how a change has come about. People’s mindset towards actresses is changing so that we can do roles which are beyond playing just being a coy girl. It is a great time for Indian actresses to be in cinema,” Priyanka said. She was accompanied to 13th International Indian Film Academy weekend and awards by co-star Shahid Kapoor and director Kunal Kohli. The actress, who won a National award for her performance in Fashion, said she is proud to have started the trend of womenIANS oriented films.

amily scored over business interests for Salman Khan, who gave his younger brother Sohail priority when a queue of filmmakers like Anees Bazmee, Sooraj Barjatya and Sajid Nadiadwala waited to meet him here and discuss projects earlier this week. Salman landed in Mumbai early on Wednesday morning when filmmakers rushed to meet the actor before he could leave for his next appointment at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) weekend and awards in Singapore. Bazmee has been waiting for months to narrate the sequel to No Entry to the star, while Subhash Ghai was part of the list of filmmakers awaiting a meeting with Salman too. But first Salman has given the green signal to the commencement of two pending projects — Sohail’s Sher Khan, followed by Shirish Kunder’s Kick. “Salman wants to start Sher Khan and Kick before the year ends. Both Sohail and Sajid Nadiadwala (producer of Kick) have waited patiently. And Salman values loyalty above all else,” said IANS one of Salman’s friends.

The friend said, "Then what's the problem?" Fred replied, "My father doesn't like her."

LEGENDS OF THE SPORT Peter and Pavol Hochschorner (born September 7, 1979) Twin brothers Pavol and Peter Hochschorner have won Olympic gold at three consecutive Olympic Games in the men’s C2 Slalom event. After switching from flatwater racing in 1996 the brothers won the C2 Slalom competition in 2000, and have since been dominant in the event, perfectly complimenting each other’s strengths.

Št pánka Hilgertová (born April 10, 1968) Št pánka Hilgertová has competed in the K1 event at five Olympic Games, winning gold medals at two of them. After finishing in 12th position in the 1992 Games, Hilgertová progressed to take the gold medal in 1996. The Canoe Slalom competition calls for speed, control and precision on the daunting white water rapids at the new Lee Valley White Water Centre. Modelled on slalom skiing, the first Canoe Slalom competition was held in Switzerland in 1932. The sport was staged on flat water during its early days, but was later switched to white-water rapids.

Slalom Boats In the 1960s and early 1970s, boats were made of heavy fiberglass and nylon. The boats were high volume. In the early 1970s Kevlar was used and the boats became lighter as well as the volume was being reduced. A minimum boat weight was introduced to equalize competition when super light materials began to effect race results. The I.C.F also reduced the width of the boats in the early 1970s. Typically, new racing boats cost between $1,200 and $2,500 (or £650 onwards for the cheapest constructions in fiberglass).

GAMES

Canoe Slalom made its debut at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, but didn’t become a permanent part of the

Olympic programme until Barcelona 1992.

THE

BASICS

Canoe Slalom competitions consist of timed runs down a white water course with up to 25 gates. Red gates must be negotiated upstream, while green gates must be negotiated downstream. Touching a gate adds a twosecond time penalty to the run; missing a gate results in a 50-second penalty. The time taken to run the course in seconds is added to any penalties to give the overall score.

COMPETITION

FORMAT

Within Canoe Slalom there are events for both canoes and kayaks. In Canoe Single (C1, for one person) and

Canoe Double (C2, for two people) events, competitors kneel and use single-bladed paddles; in the Kayak event (K1), competitors sit and use paddles with blades at both ends. While the boats used in Canoe Sprint events are long and streamlined, Canoe Slalom boats are small, light and agile. The different shape has more stability and allows for greater manoeuvrability through the rapids.

OFFICIALS

Officials include a chief judge, timekeepers, start and finish judges, and equipment controllers, as well as gate judges, who determine whether or not an athlete has touched or missed a gate. The judges use coloured bats to signal penalties.

metres of water per second. The white water is created by these pumps

and obstacles placed along the course. Construction started in July 2009 and was completed in December 2010. It opened in spring 2011 as the only brand new Games ‘12 venue that the public have been able to use ahead of the Games.

DAYS TO GO

BLAKE, FRASER WIN IN NY NEW YORK: Reigning world champion Yohan Blake and 2008 Olympic champion ShellyAnn Fraser-Pryce, both of Jamaica, won 100-meter titles on Saturday at the Diamond League athletics meet in New York. The day also saw the triumphant return of Tyson Gay in a B-level 100 race, a romp by 800m world champion David Rudisha and another failure to reach an Olympic time standard for South African Oscar Pistorius. Blake battled back to edge Trinidad and Tobago’s Keston Bledman at the line in 9.90 seconds, winning by .03, with American Michael Rodgers third in 9.99 and 2008 Olympic runner-up Richard Thompson fourth in 10.09. “I just wanted to keep a clean sheet going into the Olympics,” Blake said. “I feel a little disappointed. I wanted to do something better. Just one of those days,” he added. Last year in South Korea, Blake became the youngest world 100m champion by winning the final after world record-holder and reigning Olympic champion Usain Bolt was disqualified for a false start. Blake, aided by a 0.7m/sec tailwind, will best tested by training partner Bolt, Asafa Powell and a host of rivals at the Jamaican Olympic trials in late June and says a

Being undefeated is important going into the trials You feel invincible. “I’m prepared for trials. That’s the key. Qualifying for the Olympics is what matters.” Asked if his “clean sheet” would include the Jamaican Olympic trials, Blake said, “of course it will include the trials.” Dutchman Churandy Martina edged Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade in a photofinish for the 200m title in 19.94, both .03 off Blake’s 2012 world-best 200m time,

in a photo-finish. “He wanted to run 9.9 and I think without the headwind he would have run that,” Blake said of Gay. The 29-year-old American had not raced in nearly a year after hip surgery last year, but served notice he will be a contender to earn an Olympic berth at the US trials later this month in Eugene, Oregon. “For my first race in a while, that’s not a bad time,” Gay said. “It feels good to be back.” Fraser-Pryce, the 2009 world champion and defending Olympic champion, grabbed the lead early and won in 10.92 seconds, her best time so far this year coming three weeks before Jamaica’s Olympic trials.

Run-up for sprint supremacy

ustin Gatlin leant forward on the railing, dripping sweat and sucking in lungfuls of humid air. Gatlin had just won the inaugural Diamond League meeting of the 2012 season, in Doha. He ran 9.87sec, his fastest time since he won the Olympic title in 9.85sec in 2004. At least, it was his fastest time since that still stood in the record books, several others having been struck out when he was banned after testing positive for testosterone in 2007.

The run was not his first since he returned, but it was his quickest. Gatlin was back. “How does it feel to be Justin?” he was asked. “Have the fans made you feel welcome?” Gatlin switched on his goofy smile. Sure they had. And if some of them saw him as a villain, he did not much mind. He insists that the failed test was caused by a malicious masseur who secretly rubbed testosterone cream into his knee. “Track and field,” he said in his Brooklyn drawl, “is a soap opera with spikes on.”

of London bus crews have voted to strike unless they are paid extra for working over the Olympics, the Unite union said Saturday, raising the prospect of a walkout during the Games. Unite had previously warned that “strike action could take place up to and during the Olympic Games”, which last from July 27 to August 12. More than 8,000 workers on the famous red buses took part in the vote and backed industrial action by more than nine to one. Unite represents about 20,000 bus workers in the capital in total. The union, Britain’s biggest, wants a bonus of £500 ($774, 618 euros) per head for Games duty from 21 private bus companies, after staff on the London Underground won payments of £850 each for the expected heavier workload. It must now decide whether to name strike dates following the vote. Unite says at least 800,000 extra passengers are predicted to use London’s buses during the Olympics.

Euro 2012 comes to the home of masochism

THE BEST

France and England rivalry steeped in history

The whip cracks, the waitress shouts and the client laughs as he winces. Welcome to the Masoch Cafe in Euro 2012 host city Lviv. The city in western Ukraine, which hosts Group B matches, was once home to Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1835-1895), who gave his name to the term “masochism” through his famous work The Venus in Furs.

England and France, who meet in their opening Euro 2012 Group D pool match here on Monday, have jousted in football duels for 90 years. But if England had by far the better of the earliest exchanges — they won the first six encounters, all on French soil, comfortably — it is Gallic fans who have enjoyed more recent fare — including at Euro 2004.

GDANSK, POLAND: Italy are ready to consign their turbulent Euro 2012 preparation to the history books on Sunday when they take on holders Spain in their Group C opener here. A match-fixing scandal back home and a 3-0 hammering by Russia in a friendly, their third defeat on the bounce, has seen the Azzurri arrive at these championships in disarray. Even so, Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi (in pic), set to play as a libero against the Spaniards in a revamped formation, believes that although the fans may feel disengaged now, they will soon get behind the team and help them put their troubles to bed. “That could be the case (that the fans feel distant) given what’s happened over the last few months but all will be forgotten, not least because those playing (for Italy) have nothing to do with what has happened,” he said. “Just one month before we won the World Cup (in 2006) there was a similar atmosphere. “It is a little annoying because now next to the page about the national team you read about a sporting trial and we can’t wait for it to be over. “But it’s not a case of the whole footballing world being dirty as things seem, the national team is above that.” Spain and Barcelona centreback Gerard Pique believes that will only make the Italians stronger, as it has in the past. Already in 2006 they won the

The two Spanish giants are fierce rivals on the pitch and that spilled out into open animosity between their respective players. Real goalkeeper Casillas accepts that it was a problem a year ago not now. “It would have been a problem if we’d been playing the Euros last year but now this season we’re fine and we’re going to play,” said the Spain captain.

“I am convinced that Italy will be a very complicated opponent to play against and that they will qualify for the quarters.” Spain are not without their own concerns as hot-shot David Villa misses the tournament as he recovers from a broken leg. Feud looms in Gomez header Dutch camp downs Portugal Tom Williams

KHARKIV, UKRAINE: The Netherlands’ reputed tendency for internal feuding threatened to return to the surface as they sought explanations for the shock 1-0 loss to Denmark in their opening Euro 2012 match. Michael Krohn-Dehli’s first-half goal condemned the Dutch to defeat in a game they largely dominated at Kharkiv’s Metalist Stadium on Saturday and left them needing positive results against Germany and Portugal to progress from Group B. Bert van Marwijk’s side failed to capitalise on a slew of chances, with Arjen Robben’s shot against the base of the left-hand post in the 36th minute the closest they came to finding the target. The World Cup run-

ners-up were also frustrated by a clutch of impressive saves from Denmark goalkeeper Stephan Andersen, but the overriding feeling was one of frustration at the chances they failed to take. Wesley Sneijder cut an unhappy figure at the final

We gave them enough chances for that. My job is to give them good balls. I think I did that. We should have AFP scored,” he added.

LVIV, UKRAINE: A second-half header from striker Mario Gomez was enough to give Germany a 1-0 win over Portugal on Saturday in their opening Euro 2012 match. After victories both in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 and the third-place play-off at the 2006 World Cup, this was the German’s third straight win over Portugal in major tournaments to give Germany a winning start in Group B. “It was a really close game, but it has given us a good start,” said Germany coach Joachim Loew, whose team now face Holland on Wednesday in Kharkiv. “We did well in defence, we worked hard which wasn’t the case in our warm-up game. AFP

“We have work to do up front with the tempo, it was there in phases, but we have to be more consistent.” For all that was written about the potent attacking threat posed by Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, the Real Madrid star had a subdued night by his own lofty standards and he rarely got the better of his marker Jerome Boateng. After Denmark’s shock 1-0 win over Holland earlier, victory give Joachim Loew’s Germans an early advantage in the pool, which has been dubbed ‘the group of death’. “I am sad about the result, I felt we controlled the game and defended well,” said Portugal coach Paulo Bento. “We had bad luck when the ball hit the bar, while they had good luck with AFP Gomez’s goal.”

Vettel on pole for Canadian GP Gordon Howard

MONTREAL: German Sebastian Vettel secured his second pole position of the season and 32nd of his career on Saturday when he clocked the fastest time during qualifying for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix. The 24-year-old Red Bull driver, last year’s pole-winner, scorched to the front of the grid in dramatic style with a fastest lap of the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in one

minute 13.784 seconds. Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren was second, closely followed by championship leader Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. Australian Mark Webber was fourth fastest in the second Red Bull followed by German Nico Rosberg of Mercedes. “I think we have learned a couple of lessons from the last few races where we were quick but we didn’t get it out of the car in qualifying,” said Vettel, who is hoping to become the

KRAKOW, POLAND: Having first suffered racist abuse on a football pitch at the tender age of 11, England striker Ashley Young is unfazed by the prospect of the problem re-emerging at Euro 2012. The Manchester United star has become all too sadly accustomed to dealing with racism during his career, whether as a schoolboy or most recently on England duty during their qualifying win over Bulgaria in Sofia last year. Racism has rarely been out of the early Euro 2012 headlines after Holland’s players were subjected to monkey chants while training.

Split over Euro party and ‘Euro horror’ KIEV: The Ukrainian authorities are brimming with optimism about Euro 2012 on the eve of the first match in the capital Kiev between the national side and Sweden on Monday. But that’s more than can be said for many people, with widespread criticism about the inconveniences caused by European football’s showpiece international tournament, which is being co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland and began on Friday. French toast for Maria

PARIS: Russia's Maria Sharapova became the 10th woman in tennis history to win all four Grand Slam titles on Saturday when she defeated Sara Errani of Italy 6-3, 6-2 in the French Open final. In what turned out to be largely one-sided contest, the second seed and new world No.1 led from the start, fixing the 21st seeded Errani with her biggest shots and giving her little chance to employ her own, more considered game. The French Open title for Sharapova follows her Grand Slam triumphs at Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008 and it crowns her return from a serious shoulder injury that nearly wrecked her career.

"We are optimistic enough that the final will be finished even if we cannot avoid the rain," tournament director Gilbert Ysern said. The 90-minute final though did little to restore the reputation of women's tennis at Roland Garros, continuing a run of straight sets finals that date back to 2001 when Jennifer

Samuels followed his hundred in England's nine-wicket second Test win at Trent Bridge with a stylish 76 as this match finally got underway after the first two days had been washed out without a ball being bowled. West Indies, who had been a solid 85 for one at lunch, slumped to 152 for five but rallied thanks to a sixthwicket stand of 56 between Samuels and wicketkeeper Ramdin. At the close, Ramdin was 60 not out after completing a 97-ball half-century with six fours. Ravi Rampaul was unbeaten on two. Graham Onions marked his recall to Test duty in the absence of rested paceman James Anderson and Stuart Broad with three wickets for 56 runs in 24 overs while Tim Bresnan took three for 74 in 26. Rory stumbles, loses lead MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE: Reigning US Open champion Rory McIlroy struggled to a two-over par 72 on Saturday to fall from the lead entering the final round of the $5.6 million PGA Tour's St. Jude Classic. The Northern Ireland star, ranked second in the world, led by a stroke when the day began after an impressive 65 on Friday but made six bogeys against four birdies in round three at TPC Southwind to share second on a tight leaderboard. "It was a very testing day with the conditions," he said. "I definitely didn't feel as comfortable with my game as I did yesterday. So, you know, it was a good experi-

ence for me just to try and do what I've been working on in my swing and under real competitive pressure. For the most part, I held up pretty well. Few missed shots out there.
