eople in Andhra Pradesh are being punished for no fault of them by the politicians who play their own game. Murmers of protests are heard from different quarters. Two rounds of elections are due in Andhra Pradesh. One will be on March 18 and the other is yet to be announced. The State has been facing byelections year after year and most of them are

in the name of Telangana . Taking into account the growing disenchantment of people against frequent byelections, the BJP has decided that no one would hereafter resign in the name of Telangana from his party. “In case they resign for Telangana they must not contest again, BJP President Kishen Reddy said. He gave a call to the people not to entertain the leaders who resign and want to contest again.

A crowded calendar

n The first by-polls to two Lok Sabha seats in the name of Telangana were held in December 2006. TRS president K Chandrasekhara Rao

resigned from Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat and won it in bypolls. n In 2008, byelections were conducted to 16 assembly seats and four MP seats , after the TRS members resigned

demanding a separate state. However, the TRS could retain only seven assembly seats and two MP seats as the people were fed up. n In July 2010, 12 Assembly constituencies in Telangana went to polls again with the resignation of 11 TRS legislators and one BJP MLA. n In October 2011, there was a byelection to Banswada Assembly seat in Nizamabad. Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy contested on the TRS ticket and won with a less margin. Now, the byelections are back with the resignation of three TDP members and two Congress members and they are fighting on TRS tickets. TDP

member N Prasanna Kumar Reddy from Kovvur constituency in Nellore resigned to join YSR Congress, while an independent MLA P Rajeshwar Reddy from Mahbubnagar died of heart attack. TDP leader E Dayakar Rao talking to Postnoon said that more than winning the election, resigning and not contesting further will make a huge impact on the Centre. This would force them to think about Telangana. Congress leaders from City, Danam Nagendar and Mukesh said that the people will not entertain these resignations. The byelections are due to 17 more seats.

Wanted: a tall, veggie bride! Hyderabad zoo’s only male giraffe is desperately looking for a mate. But locating a suitable one for our lonely George is taking zoo authorities on a worldwide hunt P K SURENDRAN

pksurendran@gmail.com

I

f he could, he would put out a matrimonial ad like this: I am a peace-loving, lonely gentle creature of 7.5 years, residing at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. Invites an alliance from a very tall (20 ft), young, vegetarian and a mottled beauty. Caste, nationality, no bar. No dowry demands. The lonely male giraffe, the only one in the City zoo, has been waiting for many years for a mate. The search has been taken out globally. This one, the only surviving spotted gent of the five brought in from Africa a few years ago is unable to mate and procreate for the lack of a female species in the zoo premises. The zoo’s official for public relations, Hanifulla says, “Every effort is being made to locate a mate for him, if not from Africa, then from Europe at least. Some encouraging news has come in from Europe but it is still too early to disclose anything.” He said that the zoo had been successful in replenishing the stock of Cheetahs by securing three of them from Czech Republic recently in exchange of two lions and five crocodiles. But, getting a giraffe, and that too a female, is no mean task. “The procedure of securing a giraffe is also extremely tedious and long,” he said. A giraffe’s lifetime usually extends to 20 years. It’s the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. This one has to get a mate without

delay as 7.5 years is considered nearly middle age in giraffe years. Veterinarians say loneliness induced stress could prove debilitating in the long run. “For humans sexual desire is throughout a lifetime so he can control it. But for animals it is traumatic if they fail to mate. That’s why elephants run amuck in heat. A giraffe’s failure to find a mate can sexually and mentally disable it,” said founder presi-

Giraffe factfile, and what a fact! The giraffe has an advantage. The super predators like lion, tiger do not attack an adult giraffe (they seem to be in awe of it) but they have no qualm in stealing its cubs. Drinking is the most strenuous task for this animal. To drink from a waterhole it must spread its legs and bend down in an awkward position. Mercifully, Giraffes only need to drink once in a week or so. Female giraffe give birth standing up. Her new-born endures a rather rude welcome into the world by falling more than 5 feet to the ground at birth. But, look at Mother Nature’s magic. These infants can stand in half an hour after birth and can run with their mothers ten hours later!

dent of VSPC (Visakha Society for the Protection and Care of Animals), an NGO that stands for protection and care of animals. “Appeals have gone everywhere, let us hope. We too don’t want to see him suffer,” said Hanifulla. Meanwhile, the lonely George, as we may call him, keeps ruminating and meditating, looking at the visitors with a bored expression.

anchu Manoj-starrer Mr Nookayya is in news for all the wrong reasons. A legal battle between the makers of Mr Nookayya and Nokia Corporation has begun and it could spell doom over the boxoffice status of the film. On February 6, 2012 Nokia Corporation & Nokia India Pvt. Ltd filed a petition in the Delhi High Court alleging trade mark

infringement on the film which was earlier titled Mr Nokia. Nokia has also claimed damages worth `20,05,000 from Movie Express, Shailendra Movies and DS Rao, the producer of the film. Although, the film’s title was changed to Mr Nookayya, the Delhi High Court passed an order on March 7, to restrain the film’s release. Despite the court order, the film was released all over the State and Manoj is happy with the response. Addressing a press conference yesterday, Manoj said, “I am extremely happy that the film is doing well, but I am not able to enjoy the success completely due to the court order.”

The film’s screening was stopped in a few multiplexes. “It’s funny that these corporate guys conclude that Nookayya sounds similar to Nokia. Nookayya is the name of one of our Gods. I request Mrs Nokia (wife of head of Nokia Corp) to tell Mr Nokia that I am not your mister, I am Mr Nookayya. Corporate system is good but they should work towards progress and not try to sabotage our films. There’s nothing in the film that will remind you of Nokia. We don’t need to use their name. We have other brands. In fact, till Nokia filed a case I didn’t know that such a company existed. You (Nokia) have come to our State to make

money and need us more than we need you,” Manoj says. When quizzed if they’ll take Nokia head on in court, Manoj said, “Yes, of course. We are not going to take this lying down.” Throwing a gauntlet at Nokia, Manoj remarked, “Detthadi Pochamma Gudi. Let’s see who wins. If we don’t find a solution, there won’t be any Nokia showroom in the State.” Another filmmaker RP Patnaik is making a film titled Facebook. When asked if he’s contemplating to change the title, he said, “I am trying to get in touch with Facebook. If they have an objection, we will look for another similar title.”

A viral campaign to bring accused Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony to justice has sparked a growing storm, with millions viewing an online video whose makers deny it oversimplifies the facts

BATTLEFIELD INTERNET Leila Macor

T

he hashtag “#stopkony,” about the fugitive head of the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group, has surged on Twitter and a 30minute video has been viewed by over 40 million people in barely three days. The White House has praised the campaign, while a string of celebrities have weighed in by tweeting links to the emotional video, “Kony2012,” and promoting the initiative by Californiabased non-profit group Invisible Children. “Here’s the biggest problem. Do you wanna know what it is? Nobody knows who he is. He’s not famous. He is invisible,” said the documentary’s maker Jason Russell. “Here is how we are going to make him visible.” The film has triggered a growing wave of support from the rich, famous and influential. “Good to see such strong interest in #stopkony - a key step to helping those most vulnerable,” tweeted Microsoft boss Bill Gates. “Dear Joseph Kony, I’m Gonna help Make you FAMOUS!!!! We will stop YOU #StopKONY ! All 6,OOO,OOO of my followers RT NOW!!! Pls!” fashion mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs said on his Twitter feed @iamdiddy. White House spokesman Jay Carney recalled that President Barack Obama announced in October he was sending some 100 military advisors to help Uganda and neighbouring countries hunt down Kony, as part of a wider response. “And I think that this viral video .. is part of that response — raising awareness about the horrific activities of the LRA,” Carney added. But the Stop Kony campaign has not been without controversy. The group has been criticised for using funds raised — some 70 per cent or more by some accounts — for salaries, travel expenses and filmmaking. Watchdog Charity Navigator gave it

a low two-star rating for lack of financial accountability. Others question the timing of the campaign — coming six years after Kony and a diminished army of several 100 fighters left Uganda — a fact mentioned in passing halfway through the 30-minute film. “Why now? What does it profit to market the infamy of a man already famous for his crimes and whose capture is already on the agenda?” Ugandan writer Angelo Izama wrote on his blog. “To call the campaign a misrepresentation is an understatement,” he added. “While it draws attention to the fact that Kony, indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in 2005, is still on the loose, its portrayal of his alleged crimes in Northern Uganda are from a bygone era.” Responding to the criticism, Invisible Children put a statement on its website saying it had been “publicly denouncing (the) atrocities” of the LRA since they left Uganda in 2006. And it denied oversimplifying the facts, saying: “In our quest to garner wide public support of nuanced policy, Invisible Children has sought to explain the conflict in an easily understandable format.” To this end the campaign has focused “on the core attributes of LRA leadership that infringe upon the most basic of human rights,” an online statement said. As for its finances, the group, founded in 2003, explained that its accountability and transparency score is currently two stars because it does not have independent voting members on its board of directors. “We currently have four. We are in the process of interviewing potential board members,” it said. For the tens of thousands of people who have expressed support after viewing the video, the questions don’t appear to be a problem. “Either way, I support the movement,” said a Twitter user with AFP the handle @MDeGuuzzY.

Rail Budget likely to cater to TMC aspirations NEW DELHI: The seven northeastern states, which hold the key for Trinamool Congress to emerge as a national party, could be bestowed with a slew of new rail projects in the upcoming Rail Budget. The Railway portfolio, which falls in its kitty, will be utilised by the party to make inroads in these states, where it has already made some gains by opening its account in the Arunachal Pradesh assembly and is eyeing the forthcoming polls. TMC leader Dinesh Trivedi had visited Nagaland, his first state visit, after becoming Railway Minister. Clinton hails Indian NGO Chintan's work WASHINGTON: Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has hailed the work of Chintan, an Indian NGO chosen for America’s first Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, for eliminating child labour from recycling. “Chintan, an Indian nonprofit, is working on the ground to train and organize waste pickers and to eliminate child labour from their ranks,” she said formally announcing the award funded by the Rockefeller Foundation on Friday. “It seeks to identify and support innovative ideas that hold the promise of transforming the lives of women and girls around the world,” Clinton said.

“This group is advocating for those who work in the informal sector, pushing for recognition, basic protections, and fundamental dignity.” “Chintan's efforts have reached more than 20,000 waste pickers in India in the past five years. More than 2,000 children have been pulled out of the trash heaps and put on a path toward education and opportunity,’ she said. “Chintan's work in advocacy and research has expanded beyond local concerns and is helping change the way we understand informal labour sectors around the world,” Clinton said. Woman paraded naked in Faridabad FARIDABAD: A group of armed men allegedly assaulted a woman and paraded her naked in a village in Faridabad district, police said. The incident took place in Raipur Kala village yesterday. According to police, a villager Ishwar Singh had fixed the marriage of his minor daughter on March 11, but it was called off after local authorities intervened following an anonymous complaint. Ishwar suspected that his neighbour Balihar Singh had complained to the authorities and vowed to take revenge. On the day of Holi, Ishwar along with around 30 armed men barged into Balihar's house. Not finding him there, they allegedly assaulted his mother and sister, Faridabad DCP Rajkumar said. Later they blackened the mother's face and paraded her naked in the village. Angry students shouted “DSK, go away” and “shame on you” outside the debating society building where he made an address on the global economy.

Making his first solo tour, he flew into the “Marvellous City” earlier in the day for a three-day official visit following his tour of Belize, the Bahamas and Jamaica.

Military officials identified the man as Erick Valencia Salazar, alias “El 85.” Officials also seized over 30 rifles, grenades, magazines and cartridges of different calibers.

Israeli air strikes claim lives of 12 Palestinians, 20 injured GAZA CITY: Twelve Palestinians, most of them fighters, were killed and at least 20 wounded in a series of Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics said early on Saturday. The Israeli raids came as Palestinians fired dozens of rockets and mortar rounds into southern Israel starting on Friday morning, injuring four people, one seriously, Israeli military sources said. One Israeli strike, on a car travelling in the Tel El-Hawa neighbourhood west of Gaza City, killed the head of the militant Popular Resistance Committees, Zohair al-Qaisi, and fellow member Mahmud Hanani, the group said. The PRC threatened to retaliate for Qaisi’s death, and around 40 rockets and shells were subsequently fired on southern Israel. The Al Quds Brigades, the military arm of Islamic Jihad, said later that strikes had killed 10 of its members. The PRC and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed offshoot of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas’s Fatah movement, issued statements claiming to have fired rockets into Israel on Friday. The official Palestinian WAFA news agency quoted a statement by the Fatahdominated Palestinian Authority condemning the Israeli retaliation, saying it had created a “negative environment” that would “escalate the circle of vio-

Potter inspire’s protest slogans MOSCOW: Witty and making bold contemporary references, the banners that mocked Vladimir Putin in mass protests have already coined famous new slogans and even become the subject of a Moscow exhibition. Taking inspiration from subjects as diverse as the Harry Potter novels and cosmetic surgery, the slogans brought a sense of fun to the protests and ripped apart taboos over criticising the Russian strongman in public. The Russian word for Botox has even become a hashtag for Putin on Twitter social networking site. “Volodya, save your face!” one reads, using the familiar version of Putin’s first name. “Send Wizard Churov to Azkaban” another says, referring to a magical prison in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

The military statement said Qaisi was also involved in a 2008 attack on a terminal for pumping fuel from Israel into the Gaza Strip, in which two Israeli civilians were killed. The statement added that both the dead men were “responsible for planning a combined terror attack that was to take place via Sinai in the coming days.” It said that other strikes were aimed at men about to fire rockets into Israel. Hamas, which rules the Gaza

The relatively small Popular Resistance Committees is one of the most active, and it pledged to avenge its men’s deaths. “We are not committed to the truce; we will respond very strongly to this (Israeli) crime,” Abu Ataya, a spokesman for the PRC’s military wing, the AlNasser Salahadin Brigades, told

Ex Obama aide rips Japan’s Hatoyama WASHINGTON: A former top aide to US President Barack Obama in a new book sharply criticizes Japan’s leader after landmark 2009 elections, saying that even Vietnam was worried about his strategic thinking. US officials have made no secret of their dislike of former prime minister Yukio Hatoyama, who urged a foreign policy more independent from the United States after his center-left party swept out long-ruling conservatives. In a memoir, Jeff Bader, who served as Obama’s adviser on East Asia until last year, said the White House had expected “at least some minor turbulence” after Japan’s August 2009 election but soon found Hatoyama’s policies outright “disturbing.” Bader’s book is titled Obama and China’s Rise.

Child porn ring culprits sentenced WASHINGTON: Three US men were on Friday handed prison sentences for their involvement in an international child pornography ring, officials said. Andrew Scott, 31, from Michigan was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty in 2010 to participating in a “child exploitation enterprise” and two counts of production of child pornography, the US Department of Justice said in a statement. The other two, 68-year-old Woodrow Tracy from California and Justin Lee, 34, from Texas, were given prison time of eight and five and a half years. Their sentences were the result of an international investigation into the “Lost Boy” online bulletin board, said the department in a statement.

In a speech at the Vatican yesterday to visiting American bishops, Pope Benedict XVI, said that “powerful political and cultural currents seeking to alter the legal definition of marriage”. In this day and age, does the issue of same-sex marriages take priority over the poor and the disenfranchised? As a growing number of people across the globe identify themselves as agnostic or atheist, organised religion is swiftly losing touch with reality. Its leaders are regressing into a fantastic state where they seek to deflect criticism of their archaisms by focussing on topics that hold no water. Religion is an excellent deliverer of hope to those who believe, but it should also offer them an enlightened view on the harsh realities of the 21st Century. It’s time religious leaders awoke to the brave new world where faith is as much a question of sensitivity and tolerance, as it is of belief in the intangible.

WHY WE LOVE... the facebook There are many reasons to love the social networking site, but when two women ‘friended’ each other only to find they were married to the same man, facebook’s subtle crime-fighting ability came to the fore. Needless to say the man has been arrested on charges of bigamy. So the next time you click on ‘Friends You may Know’ make sure you’re not a bigamist, or worse, because you never know; your face is very often an open book.

T

he shrill ringing of the fixed-line phone startled me on a busy weekday when I was furiously typing away at my laptop. Grumbling about having to break my flow of thought, I walked up to the phone and answered. An unsure female voice on the other end of the line said, “Hello?” and waited with a long pause to see what I would say next. I decided this had to be one of those telemarketing calls because she sounded like she didn’t know who she was calling. She had clearly dialled a random number. I said, “Yes?” in a matter-of-fact tone. Her voice turned friendly. “Hello

ma’am. I’m calling from…” she continued, and introduced the company she was representing. I wasn’t entirely shocked. But it doesn’t cease to amaze me how spirituality has turned into a major profit-churning industry in India. The call was from a reputed international religious organisation. The caller was urging me to become a member of a prestigious fold of her esteemed organisation. I said, “No, thank you,” and hung up. But the phone call continued to bother me long after. Spirituality organisations in India run call centres; they have HR processes for their recruits and run efficiently and in a cold-blooded manner. Nothing wrong with that. If people want an emotional connect and if there’s an organised way to do that, who am I to judge? And they probably need to organise themselves better when the fold grows larger.

However, how will I be able to trust an organisation that gives priority to process and structure over more humane emotions? It’s the classic debate of how one thinks versus how one feels, and spiritual organisations are increasingly leaning towards the former, which is a troubling thought. They have chief executive officers, regular office hours, set time tables for spirituality courses and sales staff with ‘targets’ to meet (read number of recruits to their courses/ organisation). Does the essence of the Guru’s teaching then lose steam in the midst of this structure? I was walking on the streets of Miami a few months ago and was approached by a Cuban with the Bhagvad Gita in hand urging me to make a donation to this organisation and buy a copy of the Gita. I was kind at first. But when he refused to see reason and even hear me out about where

I’m from or why I don’t need another copy of the Gita on my bookshelf, I lost patience and was forced to be rude to him. And this is not the first time this has happened to me in a foreign country. There’s no doubt that marketing genius can make or break a brand — in this case the spiritual guru. But there’s also no denying that their teachings may have helped millions find what they’re looking for. They’re popular because their teachings strike a chord with people somewhere and fill that void. People wouldn’t otherwise be patronising them. At the same time, I also wonder where these organisations should draw the line and allow destiny to take over and chart the course for their teachings and belief systems. It’s for each of them to decide, at the end of the day. (The writer is a Bangalorebased commentator)

Why doesn’t TRS contest all seats in Telangana? Politricks A SAYE SEKHAR

W

hy has the vociferous Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) suddenly been finding itself on the defensive? Why has it always balked at the idea of contesting all the Assembly seats in the region? Reacting to the resounding victory of the Yadavs in Uttar Pradesh, Telugu Desam supremo N Chandrababu Naidu once again reiterated, wittingly or unwittingly, that he had no problem even if the Centre carved out Telangana as a separate State by 2014. The TRS, which normally rips such statements of Naidu apart, maintained a stoic silence. When the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) unleashed its senior leader Motkupalli Narismhulu against TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), the TRS could not pit anyone against him to engage in the slanging match. Narsimhulu is harping on his personal credibility and

political steadfastness he earned in three decades. And, he has nothing to lose either. Except for making a political compromise to sail with Chandrababu Naidu in the changed circumstances after the demise of the legendary NT Rama Rao, there is hardly anything that portrays Narsimhulu in poor light. That came in handy for Chandrababu Naidu to place the valiant Narsimhulu in the infantry to lead the war against KCR from the front. The TDP upped its ante against KCR exactly when the latter found the ground under his feet slippery and is unable to sustain the steam of the separate State agitation, over which he lost control. KCR must surely be repenting now for juxtaposing the political joint action committee and the TRS together on the same footing and handing over the JAC’s reins to a theorist, without keeping its reins with himself. Mahbubnagar district, where the TRS hasn’t been as strong as it is elsewhere, has put the slogan of sentiment and its bondage with the fundamentals of the TRS as a political forma-

UNLESS THE TRS CONTESTS ALL SEATS OF THE ASSEMBLY, THE LOK SABHA AND LOCAL BODIES IN THE REGION AND WINS AT LEAST HALF OF THEM, IT CAN NEVER PURSUE ITS POLITICAL DEMAND. tion to a test in the upcoming byelections. The local political JAC wants to sail with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), constraining M Kodandaram, convener of TJAC, to make a tongue-in-cheek statement that people could vote for either the TRS or the BJP and that the JAC would not take any side, as both parties were fighting for the cause of a separate Telangana. Kodandaram, on his part, must be thinking that it’s an opportunity to checkmate the tyranny of KCR. Whether the BJP enjoys so much of strength to win the seat in a four-cornered contest is yet to be seen. If it does, it will certainly be a political shocker to many.

Chandrababu Naidu, who always prefers to stand on a high moral ground while burying his past underneath, is sparing no efforts to turn the situation to his advantage. The Congress, on its part, apparently gave up on the contest in the region. The chasm between the Telangana Congress MPs and ministers from the party in the region widened so much that they began pursuing two different agendas. For now, the MPs stayed away from the campaign of byelections. Now several questions, which remained unanswered for more than a decade owing to the emotional quotient involved in the Telangana issue, are surfacing. Those who are opposed to the demand of a separate state are now mustering strength from the affront launched by Narsimhulu and the TDP brigade which blew the bugle against KCR. The first question, which KCR may always desire to skip is that why doesn’t his party contest all the 119 Assembly seats in Telangana region. After raising the banner of revolt against Chandrababu Naidu and forming the TRS, he never fielded his party candi-

dates from all the Assembly or Lok Sabha seats in the region. While he had a poll truck with the Congress in 2004, he moved in the diametrically opposite direction and sailed with the TDP, which he himself branded as an Andhra party, in 2009. KCR’s acerbic tongue, on more than one occasion, found him in an embarrassing situation. His ‘calculated risk’ of staying away from the elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) too exposed the shallowness of his party’s strength among the urbane electorate. Unless the TRS contests all seats of the Assembly, the Lok Sabha and local bodies in the region and wins at least half of all of them, it can never gain the moral strength to pursue its political demand. As a political observer pointed out, any agitation would reach its logical end only if it is pursued relentlessly without holidays and vacations and only when wine shops are not exempted in the garb of ‘essential services’ from bandhs, the TRS too has to rework its strategy or remain a permanent whiner. he glass ceiling has been cracked — that much is certain. But there are only 18 women at the helm of Fortune 500 companies, just 20 per cent of parlimentary seats globally are held by women, and female members of senior management are few and far between, despite all the magazine covers that have declared one year or another ‘The Year of the Woman’. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg moderated Friday morning’s first panel at the third annual Women in the World Summit, “Where are the Women at the Top?” Other questions addressed: What happened to the gender revolution? Has it stalled? And if so, why? Shelby Knox, director of women’s rights organising for Change.org said, “We were told we were equal, and that there were no barriers — then we got

into the workplace and found barriers and thought it was our problem as individuals. This generation’s young women have looked at themselves like they’re the problem, like there’s something wrong, personally, when they can’t move forward.” Young women need to work as a collective, was the sense of the panelists, banding together and helping each other up the corporate ladder. As Madeleine Albright said at Thursday evening’s opening event, “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.” Jill Abrahmsom, the executive editor of the New York Times, worked under the first female bureau chief of Time magazine, who once said, “No woman will ever be the editor of the New York Times.” Abrahmsom is the first woman to hold the position, and proudly stated that close to 40 per cent of senior management at the Times is women. “The lack of strong women is working against the grain,” said Steinem. “After all, the last time a lot of guys saw a powerful woman, they were eight.”

utomobile sales in China fell 6 per cent in the first two months of the year compared with a year earlier, prompting a top autoindustry representative to express concern about the growth outlook for the world's biggest auto market. The slow start suggests China won't afford auto manufacturers the explosive growth of earlier years.

M

azda, battling four years of losses, is offering voluntary buyout packages to US workers and raising the specter of dismissals in an effort to cut costs. Mazda is "in the midst of an extremely challenging business environment," said Jim O'Sullivan, CEO of Mazda North American Operations, in a March 7 memo to employees.

Neighbour’s envy, owner’s pride It roars like a beast waiting to be unleashed. And once you’ve pressed the start button, it is the beginning of one of the best rides of your life OSAMA SALMAN

salman.o@postnoon.com

O

ne of the first things you will notice about the Mercedes Benz C63 AMG is the engine roar. Ah! Pure unadulterated engine music. Revving up the 6.3 litre 457bhp powered beast is like bliss. And the ride has only just about begun. In direct competition to the BMW M3, the advanced version of the C-class is, well, better and faster too. No doubt the M3 is a splendid car. But then with C63, and you’d never look beyond the Mercedes because that is what it gives you — raw power. The AMG Bi-Turbo engine comes in the C-class guise and if this were ever on the road, you’d pass this off as a regular C-class. But don’t go just by appearances. I can’t help but rave about the engine roar because it truly sets you in the mood for racing. If you ever heard the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG start (yes, the same car that was featured in Transformers 3), you’d know what the sound of the C63 exactly is. As I sat on the bucket seats aka my racing seats and buckled my seatbelt in, they strangely tightened themselves. The moment finally came where I turned the ignition key of the V8 engine and I knew I was

going to be subjected to everybody’s envy. I drove the car on a slightly less crowded road, Road no. 45 in Jubilee Hills. There is enough open road to test the speed and enough traffic to know its practicality for regular use. Upon reaching it, I changed the driving mode to sport, which made the suspension stiffer. I pressed the accelerator as hard as I could and the turbo pushed me back to my seat. I could feel the excessive power coming to me and nervousness of driving this car took a backseat. The car wastes no

time in responding to you and accelerates from 0-100kmph in a neat 4.4 seconds. The handling in the C63 AMG is fantastic and with the stiffer suspension, I could feel every bump on the road. The monster hugged the road and never let go of it even once, as if it were glued to the tarmac. Handling is definitely the key strength of the C63. This German machine makes maximum use of its power by changing its 7-speed gearbox only after the car passes the 6000rpm

mark. What you get in return is bad fuel economy which makes the car impractical for everyday use. But then it’s one beauty you will be dying to show off in your garage. When you talk about this car, everything apart from the drive can go for a toss. Because once you’ve driven the C63 AMG, you wouldn’t want to talk about anything else. At the end of the ride, I was sweaty, gasping for breath. This is exactly how the F1 drivers feel like after each race. If there ever were a word to describe the Mercedes Benz C63 AMG, it’s wow! Trust me, this is nothing like you’ve seen before. Ever.

The AMG story M

ercedes-AMG GmbH, commonly known as AMG, is a subsidiary of the Mercedes-Benz car company specialising in high-performance luxury cars. AMG models typically have more aggressive looks, higher performances, better handling and better stability, and more extensive use of carbon fiber than their regular Mercedes counterparts. AMG models are typically the most expensive and highestperformance of each Mercedes series, with the exception of nonAMG V12 models found in the most expensive ranks of the Mercedes line-up.

The new iPad has a great retina display — as on the iPhone 4 and 4S you can't distinguish individual pixels and the resolution is a stunning 2048 x 1536 pixels. As expected, it's the same 9.7-inch size. It's only 264ppi and has a million more pixels than HD. Phew! There's the fingerprintresistant oleophobic coating from before as well as support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously.

VIDEOGAME REVIEW THE GOOD

APP OF THE WEEK

I have always been a huge fan of Apple, especially the iPad. The new iPad is awesome. The display is to die for! Gaming and movies are going to be so much fun on this. I have already asked my friend to preorder it. The pricing is not too high either.

LIFE

The new iPad delivers the same battery life as the iPad — that's 10 hours - with 9 hours if you're using LTE. LTE is a big power drain, so that's an impressive stat.

DIMENSIONS

The new iPad is 9.4mm thick and 652g in weight (662g for the WiFi+4G version) — the footprint is 241 x 186mm. As before, there's still the 30 pin dock connector. Forget the rumours about having microSD, mini Display Port and Thunderbolt — they aren't here.

PRICING

Pricing remains the same as previous generation iPads, with 16/32/64GB models in Wi-Fi for $499, $599, and $699 and 3G/4G LTE models for $629, $729, and $829. Apple wins hearts, yet again. And this time, the new iPad really stands out. With a retina display, superb camera, and 4G (which will take ages to come to India), this is a winner. Steve Jobs would have been a happy man. Oh! Before we forget, it’s going to be out in the market on March 16 (that’s six days from today) in 11 countries. Happy savings!

ABOUT THE I PAD

I have an iPad and didn’t think it was necessary to upgrade to iPad 2. But it’s time I get myself the new iPad. It’s awesome. I love everything about it. It certainly is going to set ERSHAN a new benchmark. But LAKHANI few can reach the stanstudent dards of Apple.

ABHISHEK REDDY student

As soon as I read that it iwas being launched, I called my brother up in Australia and asked him to buy me one. It might be a tad expensive, but with a device like this, every penny is worth it. While the 4G might not be of any use in India, the superfast processor more than makes up for it.

TECH SPEAK MG SIEGLER, Columnist for TechCrunch “Yes, it largely looks the same as the iPad 2. Yes, it’s ever-so-slightly, but noticeably (for those who use their iPad a lot, like me) thicker. I couldn’t tell a difference in weight (though it does weigh slightly more). What really matters, of course, is the screen. It’s glorious. The new camera is much, much, much, much, much better.”

DONALD BELL Cnet’s senior editor of Tablets “The iPad's new screen is a stunner. As far as disappointments go, Apple could have been more aggressive with its processor performance, or perhaps brought the iPad's cameras up to iPhone 4S specs. Perhaps it could have gone thinner or done more to extend its lead in battery life, which Apple claims is still 10 hours, or 9 hours on 4G.”

W

hen we spoke to a few vets and pet owners in the city, we found out that summer heat is as disliked by our pets as it is by us. Amar Gurthu, a city-based vet is an ardent pet lover, and the owner of two Labradors. He tells us, “My boys Lance and Rocky prefer to stay indoors mostly. But that doesn’t mean I think they are fine. From simple things like refilling their water bowls to ensuring that their morning walks are taken

earlier during the day, I make sure they are kept hydrated in the summers. The roads get hot too quickly in the summers and it may burn their paws.” He adds, “It may come as a surprise, but pets can also get sunburned, and so it is wise to apply sunscreen on areas like their ears and also on their nose. Any sunscreen we apply can be used on the dogs.” Much as dogs love to cool off in pools and kiddie pools in summer, it is not advisable to leave them in the water for long. Summer is a perfect time for the breeding of ticks, so make sure you dry off your pets after their dip in the pool. A high quality diet, teamed with regular checks

on their skin condition is a good tip to follow in summer. Charu Rao, a university student in the city adores her little pug, Itsy. She explained to us, “Thanks to the Vodafone advertisements that kept coming on TV, I started wanting to own a pug. And when my friend told me of her cousin’s new-born pug, I bought him with my pocket money and brought him home in a basket. My mum was furious, but a month later, she is the one who is more concerned about Itsy’s health than I am. “Our vet had told us that if pugs are exposed to severe heat, they could have a tough time breathing and could even suffer from heart attacks. An indica-

tion of this is when the dog starts breathing heavily. So we make sure to keep him indoors mostly, and during walks, take a bottle of water and a bowl to let him drink at regular intervals.” The age of the dog is another factor that could determine how it will do during summers. Dr. Laxmi Acharya, a veterinarian tells us more. “Dogs that are usually resistant in their younger days are more susceptible to being affected in summers as they age. Indications such as a faster heartbeat, warm skin and panting are meant to be taken seriously, as this is the way your dog is trying to tell you that something is wrong, she advises.

1

Get your pets vaccinated well before the arrival of summer as they are susceptible to infections easily during those months.

2 3

Get regular flea and tick treatments in the summers Frozen foods such as ice-creams are not a treat —strictly avoid them even though your dog may want ‘just a lick’

4

Teach your pug to wear doggles when you are taking your pet out. Some pet shops in the city do sell them.

5

And don’t forget – give it water, water and lots of water.

ver the years, I have come to become somewhat of a cautious reader. It’s a direct consequence of the fact that with each passing year, I get less and less time to read, making me feel that I have to make each book count. So I consciously quench the urge to pick a book at random, afraid that it will be a disappointment. Instead, I find myself leaning towards authors I trust implicitly, or reads that are making news in the literary circles. Or, more recently, banking on best-seller lists. I should have known better. Best-sellers, don't and have never meant, good books. All they mean is that they are popular. Celebrity in Death, currently sitting at the top of New York Times Best-seller List just reminded me that, the hard way. All my caution, as it turns out, was most needed here. A little research would have revealed, the JD Robb on the cover is — surprise, surprise — Nora Roberts. And the book, it seems, comes from an illustrious line of “best-sellers” in the In

playing Miss Congeniality. The Icove Agenda, a film based on one of her famous cases is being released. Each member of the cast is a uncanny reproduction of the people in her life. Things turn ugly when at a pre-release party, the actress playing Peabody (Eve's sidekick) is

found dead in the pool. Now Eve has to find the bad guy, solve the crime and save the day. Or so we should believe. Robb/Roberts writes assuming that we would, or should, have read at least some of her previous masterpieces and therefore be well aquatinted with the

he Best of Me has got all the trappings of a typical romance novel — the protagonists Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole are irrevocably in love and dream of a beautiful future together. For Dawson, Amanda is the ray of light and joy that he'd always dreamed of. She brings out the best in him. For Amanda, the broody and reticent Dawson is like an irresistible charm. But there's a hitch — the two come from opposite sides of the tracks; while Amanda belongs to a well-to-do family, Dawson comes from one

again. But fate has other plans and after decades the former lovers come together once again. Despite initial reluctance, they find they've never stopped loving each other. How they deal with the situation and their feelings forms the crux of this heartrending story. The ending may be predictable, but the love is so heartwarming that it overshadows all else. Nicholas Sparks has an uncanny ability to bring alive each situation for his reader. He strikes all the right cords. Apple and US publishers A to face DOJ’s wrath

Talia Ralph

The US Justice Department has warned Apple and five major publishers that it is planning on suing them for collaborating to raise the price of electronic books

Justice Department lawsuit over e-book pricing is on the horizon for Apple and five major US publishers, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Justice Department warned the companies that they would face legal action for collaborating to raise electronic book prices, the Journal found. The five publishers involved in the case are Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Penguin, Macmillan, and HarperCollins. Some of the publishers are in talks to settle the potential antitrust case, which could result in cheaper e-books for consumers, Reuters reported. Traditionally, publishers sold physical books for half the cover price, which enabled retailers to set their own store price, Slate reported. However, when Apple introduced its first iPad in 2010, the company moved to an "agency" model, allowing publishers to set book prices and give Apple a 30 per cent cut, which upset many publishers. Apple also reportedly stipulated that publishers couldn't let rival retailers like Amazon sell the same book for less, which made the agency model an industry standard, Slate reported. Justice Department lawyers argue that both Apple and the publishers violated federal antitrust laws by putting their ebook plan in place, the Journal reported. Apple and all five publishers declined to comment on the proceedings, as did the Justice Department, according to the Journal. The publishers have denied acting together to raise prices, Reuters reported. They told investigators that the shift to the agency pricing model enhanced competition in the industry and allowed electronic booksellers to thrive. In December, the European Union opened formal antitrust proceedings to investigate whether the same publishers had “engaged in anti-competitive practices affecting the sale of e-books” in Europe, the Washington Post reported. The announcement of the lawsuit came after a series of surprise raids at e-book companies last March by European antitrust officials, according to the Post. GLOBAL POST

Arshia Ayub may be more famously known as cricketer Arshad Ayub’s wife, but she’s carved herself a niche as a champion of women’s rights. Today, Arshia’s name features prominently among a host of NGOs Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com

A

s we walk into Arshia Ayub’s office in Banjara Hills, she welcomes us warmly. Her pleasant demeanour and ability to charm is immediately obvious. But that’s only just the tip of the iceberg, as we find out, during the course of our conversation. After having been in the US for 13 years, Arshia returned home to complete her graduation in commerce. Her fascination for ‘arm chair psychology’ led her take up the profession seriously. Arshia is a counsellor and has been practicing for the past 10 years. She trained under Dr Sujata Potay, a leading psychologist in the city, before she completed her postgraduation in psychotherapy and counselling. Philanthropy, however, came naturally to Arshia. One of the many NGOs she has worked for is the Hyderabad Zakat Foundation which works towards the upliftment of the underprivileged and helps educate children who can’t afford to go to college.

Another project that she is passionate about has to do with the Henry Martin Institute (HMI), an NGO that promotes peaceful living. Here, she trains teachers to break stereotypes and do away with prejudice among students, by practicing peace education in the classroom. “People often ask me why being a Muslim, I am involved with a Christian organisation and I always tell them I am involved because its main intention is to bridge gaps between religions and break stereotypes,” she said. Talking about how she came to work with HMI, Arshia said, “I was fortunate enough to attend a conference with Dr Ron Kraybill, HoD, conflict resolution in the University of Virginia. He noticed my interest and advised me to take it up full-time. The then director of HMI told me that they have openings and said that it’ll be good if a woman talks about Islam and the Hijab. He persuaded me to take it up and that is when I realised I had a keen interest in the subject.” Arshia aims to bust the stereotypes associated with

Muslim women, in that they are suppressed. “I have a real desire to talk and spread awareness. It also gives me the satisfaction, energy and drive to educate people about Muslim women better,” she says. She is not very vocal about her involvement in voluntary

organisations. Her humility doesn’t allow her to. “I am not involved as much as other people in the same field. But I have great admiration for them,”says Arshia, modestly. The ultimate satisfaction, she says, is when teachers tell her that they liked her training, because that would mean that a lot of children in turn would be influenced through them. There’s another interesting facet to the lady’s personality. A little known fact about Arshia is that she wants to go bungee jumping. “I refuse to accept that I am an adrenalin junkie. But I have had a go at skiing, and white water rafting in Bali,” she concedes. Arshia is also the first to admit that she’s not perfect. “I have a foul temper and I have a really bad habit of forgetting things,” she quips. Being the wife of a former cricketer, Arshad Ayub, Arshia is often asked if she feels overshadowed. She replies saying that she finds support from her husband in all her pursuits. “We support each other. I supported him through his cricketing days and now, he has done the same for me,” she affirms.

rrespective of how women are celebrated on International Women’s Day or any other day for that matter, how progressive we claim to have become, one thing continues to be true — it’s a man’s world. So what does a woman do to survive in this world? Charm him? Or does she equip herself with ‘certain’ qualities that will help her survive? I would prefer the latter, but I have come to the conclusion that my skills such as selfconfidence, assertiveness, dominance, etc, does not seem to go down to well with the opposite sex. I am then perceived as displaying stereotypical ‘male’ behaviour. Why do men feel the right to inherit these qualities but not women? Women who have these qualities are perceived negatively, because they are refusing to adhere to their set gender roles. My question is why can’t men understand something as simple as the concept that when a woman is working she tries to seem like her counterparts, as that is the need of the hour. And when she is out of the professional setting, she is still the sensitive, compassionate and caring person — the ‘woman’ she is meant to be. It’s appalling to see that one is promptly given the tag of a ‘manly’ woman and therefore men never feel the need for chivalry with her! For instance, when it comes to making decisions or or going out there and slogging it out— can she do it? Yes, she can. But I say, there is no harm in taking the bill once in a while or opening the door before she does, or waiting to ensure that your female colleague, who is working all alone till late in the night, is safe. After all, it not only makes you a gentleman, it makes you human.

WOMEN HAPPIER IF MEN FEEL THEIR PAIN

I AM ALL EARS

I

am a 21-year-old girl and have lived in hostels throughout my student life, now also I am studying in a women’s college. For a long time I have been trying to talk to boys my age but I get cold feet as soon as I see them and I end up making a fool of myself. All my friends make fun of me and often tease me in front of boys. What should I do?

Dear depressed girl, First thing you do is to find a new set of friends. Problem solved, new friends and no one will know how chickenhearted you are. For god sake they are boys not dragons. Anyway the pressing problem is your confidence level. Try holding a conversation with a boy for 10 minutes and see if he runs away from you. If he doesn’t then girl you are on the right track. Go out for some time with friends who are boys and maybe try and initiate a conversation, and then you will get an idea how to behave.

Parents are always planning to spend quality time with their little ones. And yet, they’re missing out on a vital bonding opportunity that is staring them in the face all the while

Loud & Proud

SHWETHA PAI

In bed with the baby MINI SINGH

feedback@postnoon.com

O

ne of my favourite parts of the day (rather, the night), is when I am drowsy, cuddling in bed with my kids. We may quarrel all day about silly things like completing homework, or getting the socks off the floor; but bedtime is bonding time. Research proves that our brainwaves change constantly during the day as well as night. One of the biggest misconceptions about sleep is that it is just a matter of our bodies ‘turning off ’ for several hours, followed by our bodies ‘turning back on’ when we wake up. Nothing could be further from the truth. When we’re relaxing and our brainwaves shift from the active beta to the alpha and theta stages, we’re letting our guards down and forging significant emotion-

Queer women & sexuality

al bonds. This is all the more true for babies and children, for whom this theta-wave bonding time can create lasting lifelong bonds which probably nourish them for years to come. That is why it is so confusing for me that co-sleeping is even an issue in some places. For me, it’s a no-brainer that co-sleeping is not only desirable, but is vital to the emotional well-being of the baby; not to mention, the parent. In fact, I’d go a step further and state that it should be illegal to let a baby or child sleep alone in a crib, let alone an entire room. It’s simple logic that people; especially babies or very small children get attached to and feel close to people they sleep near. In the absence of people, they develop an unnatural attachment to a blanket or a soft toy. Parents usually expend a lot of energy and time in planning how they will spend quality time with their little ones, so that they feel emotionally bonded. And yet, they’re missing out on a vital bonding opportunity

IT IS THE MOST INAPPROPRIATE THING IN THE WORLD TO EVEN TRY AND INITIATE SEXUAL CONTACT IN THE SAME ROOM AS A SLEEPING CHILD. THAT’S WHAT THE OTHER BEDROOMS ARE FOR! that is literally effortless and is staring them in the face all the while. Simply have the little ones sleep in the same bed as you. It is as relaxing for you, as it is for the baby. Sleeping near your baby has the same effect on you that petting a cat or dog has on a hyperactive child. It calms you down and makes you feel relaxed. True, concerns regarding cosleeping are not entirely unfounded. But they can be worked around. For instance, initially I was convinced that I’d crush my newborn to death if

she slept near me. I was pretty sure that if I put my arm over her, I’d interrupt her breathing. But I was reassured when I didn’t kill her 10 days in a row. She’s still alive, so phew! We learn with experience. Also, there’s the other problem of what to do when you want to have sex. It is the most inappropriate thing in the world to even try and initiate sexual contact in the same room as a sleeping child. That’s what the other bedrooms are for! Look at it this way — are you making your baby sleep alone for something that might happen once a week (okay, maybe once in three days) for half an hour (okay, maybe one hour). You can have your half-hour adventure by creeping out into another room, and then come back to your baby. You get zero-investment rich returns for snuggling with your baby. And anyway, the spouse is not as cuddly and sweet-smelling as the baby, is he now? The writer is a Hyderabadbased commentator

s a child growing up in a conservative orthodox Hindu family there was no question of sex education at home. I don’t know anyone in India whose parents ever sat them down to tell them about the 'birds and the bees'. Any talk about sex was frowned upon and unheard of and when they showed female actors on television gyrating to the latest beats, we were usually given some errand to run and our parents ensured we left the room. They were ready to do anything to keep the word ‘sex’ and ‘sexuality’ out of our lives. So, it was not surprising that the topic of sexuality was never brought up. If my parents noticed something amiss, they never talked about it. When they discovered that I stayed with my partner in a different city they tried to brush it off. They adhered to the old adage — ignorance is bliss. Today, close on the heels of International Women's day when people talk about women's liberation, her right to live independently and make choices, they completely ignore the bigger picture. The heteronormative society is ready to make a leeway for certain things and let the woman be independent but it is within boundaries. Her independence is confined to earning for the family but there is no allowance for independent choices. Furthermore, if you are a lesbian then your independence is curbed because, you dared to think about your sexuality and had the audacity to reflect on your sexual preference. If the Supreme Court verdict is in favour of the queer community, the lesbian and bisexual women have another cause for celebration. After having won the battle against inequality and the struggle for equal wages they will now win the right to be with the person they love irrespective of their gender or sexual identity.

The two were first introduced at a party hosted by Eduardo’s sister, actress Penelope Cruz, before stepping out together as a couple in February 2011. The actor’s attorney, Stanton L. The recruitment of Spears would bring the star power Cowell & Co. had been looking for after their

The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems. – Rene Descartes

Six Nations title hopes alive by beating old foes England at the Stade de France on Sunday. With Wales expected to make it four wins from four away in Italy on Saturday the French cannot afford a slip-up against England after the 17-17 draw with Ireland last Sunday ended their hopes of a Grand Slam.

Azarenka advances at Indian Wells INDIAN WELLS: World number one Victoria Azarenka survived an opening-match scare, outlasting Mona Barthel 6-4, 67 (4/7), 7-6 (8/6) at the Indian Wells tournament on Friday. Azarenka arrived in Indian Wells riding a 17-0 match win streak and having reached the final of her last five tournaments, but the unseeded German made her work for the victory. This was the third time Azarenka and Barthel had locked horns this season. Azarenka beat Barthel 6-2, 6-4 en route to the Australian Open title in January and 6-1, 6-0 last month in Doha. Azarenka clinched the match on her second match point of tie-breaker after rallying from a four games to one deficit in the third set.

Watson fires 62 to seize WGC lead at Doral MIAMI: Bubba Watson fired a 10-under 62 to seize the secondround lead at the Cadillac Championship on Friday as he and playing partner Justin Rose delivered a barrage of birdies at Doral. Watson had a 12-under total of 132, while England’s Rose, who carded an eight-under 64, was in second place on 11-under 133. Watson and Rose combined for a total of 17 birdies. Rose had eight of them with no bogeys while Watson had nine birdies and an eagle and just one bogey on another windy day in south Florida. “They did everything right,” said Mark Wilson, who had a ringside seat to the show as the

third man in the group. “It was some of the best golf I’ve seen collectively between them.” Watson’s eagle came at the par-five eighth, where he was in the fairway but decided his best line to the green was just past a palm tree. He smacked a threeiron that just missed the tree, carried the water and left him a six-footer. “I took it right up the edge of that tree. There’s a little tree there and it actually nicked that limb a little bit,” Watson said. “I hit it as hard as I could, just a low, what everybody calls a stinger. Hit as hard as I could low and knew it wasn’t going to slice. So all I was protecting was the draw and it went dead straight and came off perfect.

And the rest is history.” The eagle moved Watson one ahead of Rose, whose eight birdies included four in five holes around the turn, which the group made at 18 after teeing off on 10. Even though he had his own great round going, Rose admitted he enjoyed watching Watson. “I don’t let it influence my game plan, the way I play the golf course, but definitely you keep one eye on him just out of interest,” Rose said. “He’s a fun guy to watch play golf. “When he hits tee shots, there’s a bit of disbelief and stuff like that, or he curves one, starts one in the trees and there’s ‘Ooohing’ and ‘Aahhhing’ when it goes back AFP into the fairways.

AZARENKA ARRIVED IN INDIAN WELLS RIDING A 17-0 MATCH WIN STREAK AND HAVING REACHED THE FINAL OF HER LAST FIVE TOURNAMENTS. Earlier in the tie-breaker Azarenka allowed Barthel to level it at 4-4 when the top seed delivered her 12th double fault of the match. Azarenka, who claimed her first Grand Slam title at the Aussie Open, moved into the third round, where she will face Svetlana

Kuznetsova. The Russian advanced after Swiss Timea Bacsinszky pulled out of their match with a wrist injury. Azarenka, who withdrew from the WTA event in Dubai last month with an ankle injury, won despite struggling on her serve in the three hour marathon match on centre court. She double faulted eight times in the third set and won just 62 percent of her first serve points overall compared to 68 percent for Barthel. Barthel, who is ranked 37th in the world, had her finest moments in the second set. She lost the first set 6-4 then forced a tiebreaker after being down 5-1 in the second. AFP

McLaren turns its nose up at F1 rule change PARIS: No new Formula One season would be the same without a raft of complex rule changes prompting teams to try and find any potential loophole in a bid to gain that vital extra miilisecond over their competitors. For the 2012 campaign, which gets underway in Melbourne on March 18, the most obvious difference to last season is the car’s nose — described unflatteringly as ressembling that of a platypus. Revision to F1’s code book — a weighty tome full of enough technical jargon to give even the most committed petrolhead a headache — stipulates the lowering of the maximum height of the nose to 55 centimetres from 62.5cm above ground. Hence the facelift adopted by all teams with one notable exception — McLaren. Discussing his team’s decision to cock a snoop at the new noses Jenson Button told BBC: “In terms of looks it’s great. “In terms of performance, McLaren go their own way in terms of aerodynamics and downforce and design philosophy so I’m hoping that our direction is right. “And even if it’s not better I’m hoping that we’ve just gone

let a nine-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate but toughened up in the waning minutes to claim a 99-94 NBA victory over Chicago that snapped the Bulls’ eightgame winning streak. Dwight Howard (right) finished with 29 points, 18 rebounds and 3 blocks — all game-highs. “We had to commit our whole team to him,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. The Magic had led by as many as 18 in the second quarter of Thursday’s contest. But Carlos Boozer’s jump

sprained left ankle suffered in a collision with teammate Jameer Nelson. Nelson shrugged off the incident to connect with Dwight Howard for an alley-oop dunk to knot the score, and forward Ryan Anderson drained a 3-pointer to put the Magic up 94-91. Anderson added two freethrows with 46.7 seconds left as the Magic finished the game on a 10-3 scoring run. Last-gasp Inter give Ranieri reprieve Barnaby Chesterman

ROME: Argentines Walter Samuel and Diego Milito struck inside the last three minutes to give Inter Milan their first win in 10 games in a 2-0 success at Chievo on Friday while Napoli thumped Cagliari 6-3. Inter gave coach Claudio Ranieri a vital boost ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Champions League second round, second leg clash with Marseille at the San Siro. The Italians, who won the competition two years ago, trail 1-0 from the first leg in France

and many in Italy believe Ranieri’s job depends on progress to the quarter-finals. Ranieri was a relieved man at the end and urged the club’s fans to get behind the team to help them progress on Tuesday. “I’m happy for the lads, they played really well right from the beginning of the game and they deserved it,” he told SkySport. “It’s been a month (and a half) without a win and with everything we’re going through I’m satisfied for them. “It’s a result which gives us a morale boost. We said in the dressing room that we need to

carry on from the second half against Catania (where they pulled back a 2-0 deficit). “I hope the San Siro will be full and the fans get behind us because it won’t be easy but we’re ready to give it a go. “The next step is to look for qualification, we know very well how important it is to everyone. “This win gives us joy, for a team like Inter to not score in a month is not easy. We need to find motivation from within and this win comes at just the right time, it gives us enthusiasm. The win moved them up to sixth in Serie A.

City aim for perfect finish Manchester City are looking to bounce back from Thursday’s round of 16 first leg 1-0 Europa League defeat to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal Neil Johnston

MANCHESTER: Nigel de Jong says Manchester City must win their remaining 11 games if they want to win the Premier League. City manager Roberto Mancini expects neighbours Manchester United to be successful in all their matches between now and the end of the season. And De Jong believes leaders City, who boast a slender twopoint lead over their nearest rivals, cannot afford to drop another point as they look to secure a first top-flight title since 1967-68. “From this stage every game is like a final,” said the Netherlands midfielder ahead of City’s tricky away game at Swansea on Sunday. “That means we have to win every game. If United win every game, we can’t drop any points. It’s a challenge but without a challenge you’ll never win anything.” City are looking to bounce back from Thursday’s round of 16 first leg 1-0 Europa League defeat to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. Although Swansea start the weekend 14th in the table, the Welsh club have won an army of new admirers since clinching promotion last May with their free-flowing passing game. Mancini expects his team’s

title credentials to be severely tested by Swansea, who have recorded some impressive results, including a 3-2 home win over Arsenal in January and a 11 draw against Chelsea. “They are playing very well, they play good football,” said

City’s Italian manager. “They started the season very well and they have continued to play good football. I think it will be a tough game.” Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers was recently mentioned as a potential Chelsea manager,

and Mancini believes he has the ability to go far in the game. “I think that he is a good manager,” added Mancini. “It is clear it is totally different, playing for the title compared to avoiding relegation, but I think he has the capacity.”

Manchester City's squad poses before their Europa League round of 16 football match against Sporting at Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon on Thursday. AFP/ FRANCISCO LEONG

City will definitely be without captain Vincent Kompany, who pulled up with a calf injury during the defeat in Portugal. In addition, Pablo Zabaleta is also nursing a thigh problem while Mancini has doubts over defenders Joleon Lescott (groin) and Micah Richards (thigh). Striker Carlos Tevez is still building up his match fitness. Swansea are without Nathan Dyer, a key player for them this season, who starts a three-match ban. Swansea’s Spanish rightback Angel Rangel has warned City that Swansea have come a long way since losing 4-0 to Mancini’s expensively-assembled side at the start of the season. “We didn’t create too much that day, but we are more confident in our attacking play now,” said Rangel. “Sunday will be interesting because we have been very strong at home and it’s a chance for us to show them how much we have matured in this league. “Of course, they have top quality all over the pitch - and on the bench too. They probably have around £200 million of talent sitting on the bench every week, so they have plenty of options. “The difference in these games is that you have to be clinical. You won’t get many chances, and if you get one then you have to take it.”

United ready to launch title sprint: Fergie

Graham Chase

MANCHESTER: Sir Alex Ferguson believes that West Brom’s visit to Manchester United starts a crucial period in his attempts to keep the Premier League title at Old Trafford. United were beaten 3-2 by Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie at home on Thursday night. But their form in the Premier League has been imperious since their 3-0 defeat at Newcastle on January 4. They have dropped just two points — coming from three goals down to earn a 3-3 draw at Chelsea — in the last seven games. After West Brom, United face Wolves, Fulham, Blackburn, QPR, Wigan and Aston Villa in the build-up to the vital match at Premier League leaders Manchester City on April 30. Ferguson claimed that last week’s trip to

Tottenham, which produced a 3-1 win, was going to be crucial for setting up this phase of fixtures and if they can achieve maximum points from these seven matches they will pile the pressure on City. The United manager, whose team have won 10 of their 13 home matches this season, has admitted that the deficit ahead of next week’s trip to Atletic could cause him to rest players against West Brom. But he will be desperate for a victory to keep up with City, who have a twopoint advantage ahead of their trip to Swansea. He could recall Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes for the home game against the Baggies, who have won their last three matches. “The players know the challenge is there and we have a great opportunity to kick on after the great result at Spurs and hopefully we’ll manage to do that,” Ferguson said. “I’ll make one or two

changes. Scholes is available and so are Nani and Rio Ferdinand to get the freshness back in. “West Brom are in a bit of form. But we’re at home and we’re expected to win our games at home and hopefully we can put Thursday’s result behind us.” Chris Smalling is doubtful with a head knock and the game is likely to come too soon for midfielder Tom Cleverley, who has been out with an ankle injury. Antonio Valenica and Michael Owen are still out, while Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher have both been ruled out for the rest of the season. James Morrison has challenged West Brom to target a Europa League spot within the next year and hopes such ambitions will be enough to persuade Roy Hodgson to remain at the helm. Head coach Hodgson continues to be linked with the England job vacated by Fabio Capello and is viewed as a viable alternative to favourite Harry Redknapp. The 64-year-old has turned around the Baggies’ fortunes since his arrival 14 months ago but is out of contract in the summer. “In recent weeks people have just been focused on playing football,” said Morrison. “The results overtake the manager’s situation. If we were losing then maybe it might come into things. “But I think the gaffer is shrewd enough to know what he’s doing. I think he is really enjoying it here. So if everyone can stay together I’m sure the gaffer will be here. “We finished 11th and we’re tenth now, with a quarter of the season still to go. If we can kick on from there you never know what might happen next season. “The Europa League is definitely something we can look towards next year if we can get more players in. If we got into Europe I’m sure the gaffer would be satisfied with that job.” Hodgson will be without Steven Reid due to an ankle problem.

Dalglish would settle for ugly Liverpool win Graham Chase

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will be more than happy if his team maintain their ugly away form at Sunderland. The Reds manager has been battling a frustrating home record all season and although last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal was their first loss, Liverpool have won just four of their 13 Premier League games at Anfield. They have suffered six defeats on their travels but six wins and a draw means that 19 of their 39 points have come away from Merseyside. Dalglish insists his team, who are looking to

close the 10-point gap to fourth-placed Arsenal at the Stadium of Light, are always positive despite managing just 10 wins from their 26 matches. “We don’t change too much - we always go into

a game wanting to win it. At home we’ve put in some really promising performances and not got the results we’ve deserved,” he said. “Maybe away from home we’ve had better results.”
