iffed by the repeated ACB raids on Central Crime Station (CCS) that led to the arrest of many for corruption (Postnoon August 8), the City additional commissioner of police Ahsan Raza has begun an image makeover exercise that involves reducing the women staff and a determined campaign against corrupt police personnel. As Postnoon reported, what led to a spurt in corruption at CCS was mainly the dowry case counseling that involved summoning the respondents and browbeating them. Being accused men in the tough antidowry law, they allegedly fall in line and pay up, primary inquiry by top officials revealed. It is because these cases involve marital issues that the City police top brass, in its wis-

dom, had assigned more women police to CCS than necessary. The CCS has now 42 women — one inspector, three sub-inspectors, 10 head constables and 28 constables. But many of them under the covert promptings by the men allegedly indulge in corruption, it is said. Besides the four CCS police officers caught

by the ACB while accepting bribes from dowry-accused people, one more woman SI is in the firing line. Action is underway, it is learnt. Raza, mandated to probe the rot in the CCS has, besides disciplinary action, resorted to a series of efforts that are aimed at improving the image of the

CCS. He has ordered several changes like putting up a board “Appeal to Public” that says that any official demanding bribe should be notified to the CP, additional CP, DCP or ACP on mobile phone numbers. Raza has also got made posters that ridicules corruption and warns the staff to keep the

CCS clean as it is a vital body that can make or mar the image of the City police. “Giving cell phone numbers of the top police officers is a bold move. It will prove a deterrent,” said a complainant jubilantly. He said that after the notice was put up the police officers dare not mention the world bribe.

Ravi to fight intra-party fire

inally, a central Congress leader is visiting the State. Union minister for overseas indian affairs Vayalar Ravi, who was functioning like the in-charge AP affair of the party visits the City tonight. Though his official reason for the trip is to attend a family function of P Govardhan Reddy, MP, Ravi is learnt to be scheduled to meet the CM Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana and some other leaders during his one-day stay. This is the first time after

Ravi is scheduled to meet the CM and PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana the bypoll debacle that a senior Central party leader visits the State. Ravi was last seen in the State before the by-elections and campaigned for the party candidates for their victory. He tried to inspire the party to strive for an impressive victory. But the Congress managed a miserable two of the 18 Assembly seats and no Lok Sabha seat.

The main objective of Ravi’s visit now is to quell differences between the warring leaders. Intra-party fracas has reached a crescendo in the recent past on gas allocation issue where everybody was out to run down the Union petroleum minister Jaipal Reddy. While a section of leaders supporting the CM had said that Jaipal Reddy was responsible for gas controversy, the other section opposed to the CM had alleged that the CM was making deliberate attempts by dragging the name of Reddy, one of the senior leaders from Telangana region, to defame him.

These attacks and counter attacks forced Jaipal Reddy to abstain from a felicitation function held by party senior leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao in his honour. Ravi is also likely to broach the long pending issue of reconstitution of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee with party leaders. Even after completion of taking charge by present incumbent Botsa Satyanarayana. Botsa, after the bypoll armed with the list of his loyalists, met party high command leaders in Delhi and requested them to approve the list.

City’s road woes continue

one side of the work has already been restored and the other side of the works are being taken up on priority basis, would be completed in a day or two. He directed the engineering officials and the concerned contractor to be vigil to complete the restoration works immediately and the work should be restored so that the road can be allowed for the free flow of traffic. Mahesh Yadav, the area corporator, requested the commissioner to conduct a joint meeting with all connected departments like HMWW&SB, APCPDCL to have a proper coordination to solve this problem permanently. R Dhan Singh, engineer-inchief said that this is the old drain where most of the sewer lines have been merged and are not in a position to cope up with the existing flow of sewage and storm water causing this incident. He ensured to identify the problem and restore the works.

he repercussions of the road damage near Model House, Punjagutta became obvious as it started to affect the traffic of the entire City. Traffic police virtually engaged half of their personnel on the alternative routes, including several inspectors, subinspectors and men from various divisions. Walkie talkies in the North District were busy, where the higher officials coping with the situation regularly asked their cadre ‘not to panic’.

PERSONNEL

DEPLOYED

About 300 personnel from across traffic police stations of the North District were on the alternative routes and by-lanes between National Highway and Raj Bhavan road. The Raj Bhavan Road, suddenly became a arterial route for road users, providing an alternative between Khairtabad and Punjagutta. Commuters everywhere had to face a tough task while moving ahead. The narrow lanes which were supposed to be short cuts connecting major roads were packed. Frustrated people resorted to continuous honking, making the task more tough for the traffic cops. “It took more than an hour for me to travel from Khairtabad to Nagarjuna Circle,” says N

WORKING Srikanth, a resident of Srinagar Colony. Medical services were also badly hit on this stretch, as the road consists of one of the important hospitals, the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, besides NIMS. Being one of the important routes for City buses, taking a diversion was no less than a tedious job. Traffic cops feel this is the biggest problem which cropped up in the recent years. Unlike the Fever Hospital incident which occurred two years ago,

Most of the commercial complexes, shops in the area are directly letting their sewage into the storm water drains. they feel this too will open up several interrelated problems. According to officials, if the road is not opened to general public till Monday morning

matters may become worse. While on inspection, GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu said that the over flowing sewage water into the storm water drains was a source of the problem. He stated that most of the sewage is entering the storm water drain due to the absence of a sewage network. It has also been noticed that most of the commercial complexes, shops in the area are directly letting their sewage in the storm water drains. The commissioner said that

While speaking to Postnoon, PVS Ramakrishna, deputy commissioner of police said that inspectors were engaged in almost all major junctions. He said the situation could have improved but the rain played spoil sport, causing vehicles to come on roads simultaneously after rainfall recedes. According to him, a separate contingent would take care of the problem in the night to guide lorries. He also said that the personnel were doubled in two days at choking points on Rajbhavan Road. He expected the situation to improve on Sunday.

he took over the mantle of the State administration just 40 days ago. But within the short span she is trying to leave her mark when it comes to work culture. Chief secretary of Andhra Pradesh Minnie Mathew, the second woman chief secretary of the State after Sati Nayar, has done something unprecedented: Soon after she took over she administered an oath to the employees not to resort to gender bias. She took this up from her rich and vast experience in the State administration, and it was, in a way, admitting that there did exist a gender bias loaded against women employees. Another ‘Minnie factor’ was introducing punctuality in the

Secretariat works, which was sadly lacking in all these time. Most employees languished in the canteen and compound while the air conditioners and fans and lights were all working in their rooms. She has set a deadline for work, say the staff. This calls for working beyond 5 pm, and employees don’t mind, as a visit to the corridors of power in the after hours reveals. Employees associations say some minor irking issues were sorted out by her quickly. “The secretaries have asked us to process the files within the given deadlines and without any undue delay. This was being done after she took over,” one section officer of the State secretariat told Postnoon. The secretariat employees union leaders too say there is a change in the work style now. “She is known

Apart from this, the CS, who would superannuate in February next month, is also shifting her focus on tackling farmers’ problems in the wake of drought in the State. for her strict adherence to rules and regulations. It is getting reflected in administration. There is a lot of change in terms of solving employees problems. The CS had promptly solved many of the problems raised by us,” AP Secretariat Employees Union president M Hanumantha

people died and more than 2,000 were injured by twin earthquakes that hit the Tabriz region in northwest Iran on Saturday, an official said. Khalil Saie, the head of the regional natural disasters centre, was quoted by the ISNA news agency giving that toll. The quakes, which struck Saturday within 11 minutes of each other, measured 6.2 and 6.0, according to Tehran University’s Seismological Centre. Their epicentres were close to the twons of Ahar and Varzeghan, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) from Tabriz. With telephone communications disrupted in the disaster zone, northeast of the city of Tabriz, emergency teams were relying on radios and travelling in person to hard-hit villages to rescue and assess the destruction. The US Geological Survey, which monitors seismic activity worldwide, ranked them as more powerful, at 6.4 and 6.3 on the moment magnitude scale, respectively. Khalil Saie, the head of the regional natural disasters centre, told state television that at least 200 people had perished and more than 1,500 had been injured. He warned that the toll could go up. Earlier he urged residents in the zone not to panic, reassuring them that “help is arriving and rescuers are already at the scene.” “Up to now, there are no

Iran’s Red Crescent took over a sports stadium to shelter the 16,000 people left homeless or too afraid to return indoors, the Fars news agency reported. It also provided 3,000 tents, blankets and tonnes of food — all a sign of years of preparedness in a nation prone to sometimes catastrophic seismic activity. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s office posted a statement on its website expressing condolences to

those in the disaster zone and calling on authorities to “mobilise all efforts to help the affected populations.” According to the official IRNA news agency, 66 rescue teams were at work, using 40 devices and seven dog squads to detect buried survivors. Some 185 ambulances were sent to the area. Those hurt were taken to hospitals in Tabriz and Ardebil, the two biggest nearby cities, both of which escaped relatively unscathed from the quakes. In contrast, villages outlying the towns of Ahar and

Varzaqan, 60 kilometres (40 miles) from Tabriz, were decimated, being closest to the epicentres of the two quakes. Dwellings close to Heris, another town close by, were also badly shaken. Residents in the region were terrified as their homes shook around them when the quakes hit, and they fled into the streets for safety, according to reports. Tehran University’s Seismological Centre said the first earthquake occurred at 4:53 pm (1223 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometres.

EDITORIALS THANKS Yogeshwar For every trough, there’s a crest. Though it’s astounding that India finished last in Hockey in Olympics, Yogeshwar Dutt’s bronze in wrestling came as some salve to our wounded pride. It was fantastic to watch the man who could hardly see with his right eye due to the big swelling from an injury near it, beaming and acknowledging the cheers of the crowd while he held up his precious bronze. The 29-year-old’s feat is nothing short of historic, for he is only the third Indian to win medals in wrestling, after KD Jadhav (1952) and Sushil Kumar (2008), who could not rise up to the expectations this time. No matter, Dutt’s bronze is good enough. The man’s determination and grit is admirable. Fighting three opponents in less than an hour to win a medal is no little feat. And that he ignored the injury to his right eye suffered in the prequarters is proof of his mettle. Yogeshwar’s achievement is the culmination of 21 years of hard work. He says he felt very tired at several instances, but desire for a medal kept him going. Thanks, Yogeshwar, for not giving up. You have made us proud.

The burgeoning youth power of India From the hip

T

oday is the 13th annual International Youth Day (IYD). It is an awareness day designated by the United Nations for governments and all agencies to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. It was in 2000 that the first IYD was honoured through various events. For statistical purposes, the United Nations defines youth as persons between the ages of 18 and 24. According to the Indian government 13 and 35 are the defining ages. With the population of India crossing the staggering one billion mark, 65 per cent of this total population is below the age of 35 years and 47 per cent under 20, making India the biggest celebrator of IYD. As Olympics 2012 draws to a close, the promising youth brigade of India is evident in Vijay Kumar, Saina Nehwal, Mary Kom, Gagan Narang, Devendro Singh, Tintu Luka and such others. Former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam, when in office, had told students of Wharton Business School, Philadelphia at a breakfast meeting, “The great challenge of transforming India can be achieved through youth, which has got the power of ideas, ambition and ability.” India celebrates its National Youth Day on January 12, to commemorate the birthday of social philosopher, Swami Vivekananda. According to Indian Tribune, a weekly journal, “The National Youth Policy framed in the Seventh Plan and a plan of action formulated in 1992 seeks to provide youth with new opportunities to participate in nationbuilding.” The Economic Survey of 2010-11 pointed out that by the end of the Eleventh Plan in 2012,

12 per cent of India’s population in the age group of 18-24 years would require jobs and pointed how the private sector has ensured that the job markets do not shrink. Pointers from DB Research indicate that between 2010-2030 India will add 241 million people in the working-age population, Brazil will add 18 million and China will add a meagre 10 million people during the same time! According to United Nations Population Fund executive director Babatunde Osotimehin, “There are an estimated 1.8 billion youth in the world today, accounting for nearly a third of the world’s population with 90 per cent of them living in developing countries. Consider the demographic dividend: By 2020, an average Indian is expected to be only 29 years of age against 37 years in

China and US, 45 years in West Europe and 48 years in Japan. Statistics apart, youth power despite being a double-edged sword needs to be wielded in the field of politics through the tool of voting power. A field in which Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Sachin Pilot, Jyotir Aditya Scindia and Agatha K Sangma are shining examples in India today. To many, especially in far flung villages of India, Rajiv Gandhi was truly the last revered youth icon. Bollywood, however, has a contradictory trend of projecting motivating youth-oriented films and corrupting the youth with global trends and local crass. Popular author Chetan Bhagat trying his hand at non-fiction for the first time with “What Young India Wants,” had this to say to a private television channel recently: “Youth power is the biggest myth going around India

right now. Of course the youth has spending power — we can buy enough SIM cards, sneakers and fizzy drinks to keep many MNCs in business. But we do not have the power to change things. Can the youth get a new college setup? Can the youth ask the government to provide tax incentives to MNCs to relocate jobs to smaller towns? No way. We are wooed, used, but seldom heard.” Subsequent national surveys have only pointed to economic indicators of youth development like gender ratio, education, unemployment and geographical segregation. Challenges faced by youth and created by them grow with their promising age in a country like India, which is at the crossroads of attitude formation. Yet, the topic of the role of youth in modern India gets addressed adequately only in high school essay competitions!

INTERVIEW SUNDAY, AUGUST 12, 2012

DEEPAK DESHPANDE

Motivated by the love of learning Noted educationist Anjum Babukhan believes that lifelong learning and knowledgesharing is the key to a progressive future.

SUNORY DUTT

feedback@postnoon.com

Y

ou’re well known for pioneering multiple intelligence and brain-compatible learning strategies for children. What motivated you to get into the field of education? After completing my Honours in psychology from Loyola University of Chicago, Illinois, USA, I moved to India in the mid ‘90s. I had initially planned on pursuing a PhD in counselling psychology before deciding on education. By then, I realised the scope and opportunities in the field of education in India were far greater than counselling. Also, at that time, my father-in-law, Bashiruddin Babukhan, had a school, Springfields, and I felt I could work and apply my skills there. While counselling involves one-to-one interaction, in education you’re working with people, but in bigger groups. It’s still people-related.

As the director of education at Glendale Academy, what were some of the challenges you faced in setting up the school in 2003? That could fill a whole book! Everything was important all at

once! I was in charge of recruitment, resource planning, curriculum development, procurement of school materials, uniforms, advertising and interiors all at the same time. I had a staff of two to help me. I think at that time my western upbringing really helped me in terms of having gained an early exposure to great schools with excellent facilities and infrastructure. I tried to replicate those standards as best as I could. We’ve grown into a secular truly international school with a global, pluralistic and cosmopolitan outlook. From just over 40 students in the first year, our current strength lies in nurturing 1,300 impressionable minds and talents.

We’re living in the knowledge age. When you share something you’re good at, it empowers you to be even stronger.

Why the need to launch the Edvantage Teacher Leadership Institute last year? Teacher training has always been one of my key focus areas. I believe the best and only way to develop a good school is to develop its teachers. The institute trains educators on education pedagogy and methodology and offers a six-month Global Teacher Certification programme for Indian teachers. In India, I’ve noticed people don’t like to share what they do; they’re a little possessive. I feel that you’re living in the knowledge age and anything you need to know is available at the click of a button. It

other. My father-in-law had the vision to build a world-class institution and I helped materialise that. My husband Salman’s domain was his involvement in the school’s physical infrastructure. I think I breathed soul and spirit into it. My father-inlaw likes to joke and say, “I’m the founder but (pointing to me) I found her”. And Salman adds, “He didn’t find you, I did”. I take that as a compliment. My in-laws are very supportive and progressive in their outlook. They believe that women need to be useful in society and make a difference. They’ve always appreciated my ideas and the personal touch that I bring into the things I do. They’ve provided me the fertile ground to blossom; it's a big blessing.

How do you keep abreast of new developments in the field of education? only makes you and your school stronger when you share because that's something you’re good at, and sharing that empowers you for your own good.

What are some of the life lessons you’ve learnt from your husband and in-laws, and vice versa? It’s been a wonderful synergistic relationship where each of us has our strengths that support each

I absolutely love learning. I’m intrinsically motivated by new learning and exploring the world. When I feel good about what I’ve learnt, I share that with my staff, my students and other people within my circle of influence. I’ve attended the Learning Brain Expo in San Francisco. In April this year, I visited the Harvard Graduate School of Education for a three-day learning lab on Systemic Change for Student Success. It taught me ways

to improve teaching and learning environments. Next month, I am off to Cambridge, UK. Whenever I visit my family in Chicago, I enrol myself in different workshops and visit institutions to take a leaf out of their book and better my learning as well as teaching experiences.

What inspires you? Any and everyone who has some differentiating quality. I get inspired by a multitude of people, ideas, and experiences. Howard Gardner talks about the five minds for the future in his latest book. I think I have a bit of each in me...especially the "Synthesizing Mind". I love and appreciate the many different aspects of different people. I’m like a busy bee that collects pollen from various flowers and synthesises all that to create sweetness and spread it around.

According to you, what’s vital for a progressive intellectual community? Unity in diversity and communal harmony. It’s imperative to uphold secular values in a pluralistic society. We need to recognise that our similarities are far greater than the differences that divide us. That's something very important for the future of India. And human values are of utmost importance. Only then will we be global citizens.

he Giri Committee report on National Policy on Senior Citizens (2011) estimates that in the years 2000-2050, while the overall population of the country grows by 55 percent, the numbers of those over the age of 60 and above will increase by 326 percent and those above 80 years by 700%. These are staggering estimates when put into numbers. It means that there are currently over eight million senior citizens in India. And in the next fifty years, we will have about close to 350 million senior citizens. The sheer numbers alone are a reason to sit up and take notice. Still, an alarming number of elderly in our country are not covered by any social welfare nets and live a life of poverty, neglect and abuse, report NGOs. “It’s ironic. The members of our Parliament, the leaders of our political parties, bureaucrats, policy-makers, a majority of them are all above 50. Still, they are apathetic to the needs of their own kind who can’t even manage two full meals a day,” rues Bhaghyalakshmi Ramana, a senior citizen who retired after forty years of service in a bank. RN Mittal (in pic) is president of the All India Senior Citizen’s Confederation (AISCCON) and has been working extensively towards the cause of senior citizen welfare in the country. He is quick to point out that 70% percent of the ten crore senior citizens in India are under the poverty line. Lack of legal reforms,

for instance, is a classic indicator of how apathetic the government is towards the cause, he says. “Countries smaller and poorer than us like Nepal, Kenya, Namibia and others spend more on healthcare and welfare of its citizens than us. Even our legal framework is flawed. Acts like the National Policy on Older People (1999) and The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act (2007) have been put into force, but have not been implemented by any State properly.” he says. The general sentiment that the old and elderly are a burden on the society has long since disappeared in the West. But has remained unchanged even after all these years say other senior citizens. The 67-year-old Krishna Rao, barrister on retirement now runs his own legal consulting business from home. “Unlike what many think, we want to be financially independent and not reliant on anyone else. Especially not on our children. For that, either our pensions have to be increased or there should be an some initiatives to hire senior citizens in the workforce so there’s a value addition from us and we don’t become a burden on the society. A lot many of us are still capable of working.” Mittal agrees. “Retirement ages across the world are changing. We need to change too. Create a situation where are useful. Also the universal old-age pension scheme needs to come into force. It is the only way to create independence for crores of senior citizens. That will drastically reduce elder abuse which is a fast increasing problem in the country.” We are now a nation that prides itself on being among the world’s youngest populations, but perhaps its high time we spare its elders, a serious thought.

Talkin’ all that jazz The night was about music and nothing else, and the small but appreciative crowd would have had it no other way. Jazz musicians Sharik Hasan and Adrian D’Souza gave what you call a memorable performance.

azz fans were just about trickling into the auditorium at BM Birla Science Centre when Sharik Hasan popped out from the green room and proceeded to walk up the aisle. Apart from a few turned heads, some polite murmuring and my quickly suppressed desire to yell ‘Sharik!’ as he walked past, the pianist strode unnoticed through the crowd that had come to watch him perform. A short while later though, when Hasan (organ, piano) and Adrian D’Souza (drums) took the stage, the audience was captivated. As the rain pattered on out-

side, a small group of Hyderabadis luxuriated in the smooth sounds of jazz and blues. Hasan and D’Souza sat facing each other on stage, picking up cues and matching their tempos. The arrangement gave the concert an intimate feel, as if we had stumbled upon a private jam session of two brilliant musicians. Alternating between the organ and the piano, Hasan thrilled with his compositions and the duo’s renditions of classics like Back At The Chicken Shack and Georgia had the audience calling for more. Even a power cut could not faze the musicians, who were performing a formal concert in Hyderabad for the first time. When the lights went out, D’Souza dazzled the audience with a scintillating ‘solo in the dark’. At his final booming drum stroke, the lights came back on, almost as if it were pre-arranged.

Even if one person comes up and says, ‘I don’t know much about jazz, but I really liked that song you played’, then I’ve done my part But D’Souza and Hasan aren’t the type of musicians who indulge in stage tricks to impress their audience. The night was about music and nothing else, and the small but appreciative crowd would have had it no other way. Speaking to Postnoon after the concert, D’Souza said, “This was easily one of the best concerts I had in six months. No one to tell me what to play, an audience who loved the music; what more

he Ashcan school is a revolutionary group of young American artists who, at the beginning of the 20th century in New York City, rebelled against academic art with their individualism and defiantly urban art. Conservative in style, the Ashcan paintings were revolutionary in content. The Ashcan group sought to capture the feel

of turn-of-the-century New York city through realistic and unglamorised portraits of real life in gritty cities crowded with immigrants and the struggling poor. With such unpleasing titles as The Wrestlers, The Shoppers, Hairdressers’ Window, and Sixth Avenue, their paintings captured spontaneous moments in everyday events. They were known as the New York Realists,

could anyone want?” By coincidence, both Hasan and D’Souza picked up their respective instruments when they were five. D’Souza, a Mumbai boy, played in a rock band in college and went to the US to train with renowned jazz singer Roseanna Vitro. Hasan, who is from Bangalore but has his roots in Hyderabad, played classical music and went to the US to study math and English literature. It is only in the US that both of them really got interested in the style. Both went on to play at several international venues and festivals, apart from touring together in India. The duo acknowledges that the jazz scene is non-existent in India. “When I have to think of jazz musicians in India, it is literally a handful; there are just five or so playing at this level,” said D’Souza. Hasan, however, says that jazz is niche almost

anywhere in the world. “There might just be a few people listening. But even if one person comes up and says, ‘I don’t know much about jazz, but I really liked that song you played’, then I’ve done my part.” Jazz, which was once the ‘pop’ music of the fifties, seems to have gone out of style. Even Bollywood tunes, which once used to be heavily influenced by big band and blues, steer clear of the genre. “It all depends upon what is promoted. If they played jazz all the time, it would be popular. By promoting mostly pop and rock music, those become the mainstream music,” said D’Souza, who occasionally composes for movies and commercials. Of this work, he says, “That’s just for the money; that’s not jazz. This kind of concert, where I play this kind of music for people who are interested, is what it is all about.”

called by critics as the “revolutionary black gang” and the “apostles of ugliness.” A critic, referring to their depictions also conferred them the pejorative label Ashcan School which became the standard term for this first important American art movement of the 20th century. The primary members of the movement included “the Eight”: Robert Henri, Arthur B. Davies, Maurice Prendergast, Ernest Lawson, William Glackens, Everett Shinn, John Sloan, and George Luks. It was a diverse group of painters but opposed to academic art. Another central figure, George Bellows, joined the movement later.

POTTERING AROUND

Gardens aren’t only for those with large balconies and extensive backyards. If you want to bring the outdoors home, here’s an apartment-dweller’s guide to plants. Jyotsna Nambiar

jyotsna.n@postnoon.com

S

pace is not something you can find easily in the City. Most apartments are small, with windows that let in little sunlight. However, if you want a splash of green in your home, space is not really an issue. There are several varieties that thrive in limited area and minimal sunlight. While picking plants for your window garden, there are some factors to consider. First is the amount of time you can dedicate to your plants. If you’re a working professional working five-six days a week, pick plants that are hardy and don’t require too much attention. These include succulents like aloe vera and some species of cacti. Another important criterion is sunlight. In apartments, unless you have a balcony or a terrace, chances are that your plants will receive little sunlight. This rules out most flowering plants. However, there are plenty of shade-loving plants that will thrive in such conditions. These include Dieffenbachia (dumb cane), some species of Ficus and asparagus. In cooler temperatures, anthurium plants and some species of fern will also grow well. If there is absolutely no sunlight, pick plants that grow well in full shade. These include Zamia (sometimes called the cardboard plant), Sansevieria (mother-in-law’s tongue), and Zebrina pendula (also called wandering jew). If you have a balcony or a terrace which gets plenty of sunlight, you can grow a lot more plants, including flowering plants. Grow begonias, Euphorbia milii, and Nerium for a lovely burst of colour. Sriram Aravamudan, a partner at My Sunny Balcony, a landscaping company based in Bangalore, says that a basic home garden doesn’t take up too much time. “Depending on what plants you’re growing, water them daily or once in two days. Spend some time, around an hour or so, over the weekend fussing over your plants. Prune them, check for insect infestation, loosen the soil and reposition your plants if you find that

they’re getting too much or too little sunlight. Once a year, if the plants have grown too large, consider repotting them into larger containers.” The daily care will take just about 10-15 minutes, he adds. Spraying the plants with insecticide, either organic or inorganic, will help protect them from infestation. Fertilizers can be used, but consider using organic, homemade ones rather than inorganic fertilizers, as they are better for the environment and the plants. Neem oil and chilli-garlic spray are effective insecticides, and animal manure and vermicompost are good organic fertilizers. People are also opting for traditional Ayurvedic preparations like panchagavya, which is an excellent pest repellent. Panchagavya is available commercially at nurseries and agricultural stores. With a little time, effort and getting your hands dirty, you can soon have a secret garden in your home.

Food for the soul Apart from being a therapeutic hobby, gardening can also help supplement your food supply and reduce your carbon footprint. Manikandan Pattabiraman, author of the gardening blog, Geek Gardener, shares his tips on setting up a kitchen garden. n Start with plants that are quick yielders, like spinach, beans, mint, coriander and chilli. n If possible, use plants directly, instead of seeds. This will save time and ensure a faster yield. n Starters can use a mix of sand, compost and soil to grow plants. An easier base to work with is a mix of cocopeat and compost, also called a soilless mix. n Leafy vegetables should be grown in a container that is shallow and wide, so that more can be grown. For other vegetables, a pot with a volume of at least 10 litres will be needed. n Tomato, cabbage, capsicum, brinjal, okra and beans grow easily in kitchen gardens.

Consequently, atta is now being procured at about 20 per cent more than the price bakers paid for the raw material earlier.

f you want a truly royal experience then I’d suggest dining at Aish, an exclusive Hyderabadi and Andhra restaurant at The Park. As I stepped into Aish I felt like I’d been transported to another time altogether — a time where the royals reigned and I felt like one of them. The large ornate silver door beckoned as I walked towards a royal experience. The play of beige and silver in the restaurant’s décor (it was designed by Tarun Tahiliani) works perfectly well for the theme and the restaurant’s Swarovski lights give it just the right ambience. The courteous staff seated us as we were offered a choice of dishes from their À la carte menu or the newly introduced Royal Thali in a choice of vegetarian and non vegetarian. Intrigued by the menu that is aimed at the corporate crowd that prefers a quick lunch, my friend and I decided to settle for the Royal Thali. We started our meal with a refreshing welcome

drink – a concoction of orange juice and mint, followed by the soups. For the non-veg thali we were served some wholesome Gosht ka Marag (lamb broth with freshly ground spices) while in the vegetarian thali it was the flavourful and spicy Kaddu ka sherwa (curried butternut squash soup). Chef Mandaar, who designed the menu, sure believes in giving traditional dishes his own little twist. For instance, he gave the usual tikki a green twist with the delicious Hari Gobhi ki Tikki made of broccoli and dill. Crunchy on the outside and soft inside, it was the perfect starter for a monsoon lunch. The Gongura Paneer Tikka, a tangy offering was the highlight of the meal. In the non veg thali we were served Sunheri murgh kebab, succulent morsels of roasted chicken, and some Shikampur kebab. For me, the Shikampur took the cake.

The minced meat cutlets were seasoned perfectly and melted in my mouth. Delicious! The main course was the thali itself with a naan, lachcha paratha, papad, anaari raita and palakura pappu. For the non vegetarians the thali offers Safed Qorma, Methi Kaju Murg and Chatpata Paneer. What made the choice of dishes interesting was the fact that the chefs at Aish have trained with some of the royal families of Hyderabad. The

Safed Qorma, succulent pieces of lamb simmered in a cinnamon and dry fruit infused milk, is a recipe that they got from the Jung family. I’ve usually eaten mutton in a range of spicy and heavy gravies. But this one came as quite a surprise to me, with its subtle yet delicious flavouring. It didn’t leave me with a greasy feeling. The Methi Kaju Murg though, was a tad too bland for my palate, but the Chatpata Paneer more than made up for this with its tangy tomato and onion gravy. For the vegetarians there Dum ki Bhindi, Dhuyen ki Paneer Kakhina and Dosakaya Tamato Curry. My friend who tried the vegetarian thali was mighty pleased with the smokey paneer and the dosakaya, although she felt a bit let down by the Bhindi. We were served the Subzi Biryani along with the main course, which I didn’t particularly enjoy. It could have done with a bit more of spices and I don’t mean the tonguenumbing kind, but the more flavourful ones. The dessert, was by far the

Aish, The Park When: Lunch (till 3pm) Meal for two: Rs 1,500 plus taxes (with a glass of house wine) Rs 2,400 plus taxes highlight of the meal. We were served some Maple and Walnut Kulfi, which might sound very strange to many conventional kulfi lovers. But don’t judge this dessert without first trying it. Right from my first bite to the last I relished every bit of this creamy ricotta cheese concoction infused with some maple syrup and crunchy walnuts. It is every dessert lover’s delight and a wonderful twist to the traditional kulfi. So if you want to sample some authentic Hyderabadi and Andhra cuisine, with a twist of course, do try out the Aish thali. It is definitely one you’d want to sample.

S

aiyami Kher is having a blast on the sets of YVS Chowdhary’s Rey. Sai Dharam Tej, Saiyami Kher and Shraddha Das are playing the lead roles in this musical love story. The film unit has been shooting in New York and San Fransisco for the past few weeks. “We have been shooting in the US for almost a month now and I am really excited because I have got the opportunity to shoot at some of the most beautiful locations in US. The entire crew has been quite patient and helpful to me

which had made things so much easier,” Saiyami says. Apparently, everyone in the team has been pulling pranks on each other and most of the times the scapegoat is the makeup man. “Having shot in Bangkok earlier and now the US, everyone’s always imitating the different accents. We have been troubling our makeup man a lot. We keep hiding his stuff till he gets really mad and this happens everyday. And I slapped Sai Dharam Tej 11 times for a shot,” she laughs. 11 times? What happened? “ The other day we were

shooting near the Golden Gate bridge and we had to do a scene where I had to slap Sai. It was freezing cold and my director wanted me to make it look as real as possible. When he was seriously explaining the scene, Sai interrupted and said, ‘Sir! She’s more than happy to slap me!’. I have never slapped a boy, so i was secretly excited. We did 11 takes for that shot and after we were done, I told Sai that the first 4-5 takes were only because I was enjoying it so much. It’s been a thrilling experience so far,” Saiyami signs off.

In Nizam alone, the film collected a share of close to `3 crore in two days which is a new record in Allu Arjun's career. Trivikram Srinivas had directed the film and N Radhakrishna produced it. Talking about the film's success, Allu Arjun said, “This is probably the first time in my career that my film opened to overwhelming positive buzz. The sole credit for the film goes to Trivikram Srinivas. It’s because of him that I have been getting great response for my action and dances from the audience.” The film has been dubbed as Gaja Pokkiri in Malayalam and it's slated for release against six other big Malayalam films on August 17; however, Kadhal Haasan, who has been distributing all Allu Arjun's films in Kerala is confident that this film will hit a jackpot.

Deepika to star opposite SRK in Chennai Express A ctress Deepika Padukone will be seen opposite Shahrukh Khan in Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express. “Deepika is part of Chennai Express. She has been finalised,” sources close to the project told. It was opposite SRK in Om Shanti Om that the model-turned actress made her debut in Bollywood. Lot of names like Kareena

Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra were floating around for the leading lady of this film, which will go on floors from the end of September and would release mid-next year. Chennai Express tells the story of a man (Shahrukh) who travels from Mumbai to Rameshwaram and what happens during the journey forms the movie. PTI

Kat was scared of SRK

A

ctress Katrina Kaif, who will be seen opposite Shahrukh Khan for the first time in Yash Chopra’s next film, says she was intimidated by the superstar but later found him to be very dedicated and helpful. “With regards to Shahrukh, I did not know him

that well at all. I would have said five words to him in my entire life. I have worked with SRK this year, after being in the industry for nine years,” Katrina told. Both are paired opposite each other in the untitled film directed Yash Chopra. PTI

Prachi to romance Sanjay Dutt in Saamy remake

A

ctress Prachi Desai will be seen romancing Sanjay Dutt in the Hindi remake of South hit film Saamy. The Hindi version will be directed by renowned South director KS Ravikumar, which will mark his debut in Bollywood. The 2003 Tamil film remake

will see the 53-year-old Dutt paired up with the much younger Prachi, 23, in the lead. “We have finalised Prachi for the film. She is apt for the role of a girl next door. We always had Prachi in mind for this film,” coproducer P G Srikant said. Saamy a masala film, which tells the story of a tough cop was

directed by Hari and starred Vikram and Trisha Krishnan in key roles. The film was a huge hit down South and was remade in Telugu. Ravikumar is famous for his work with Rajinikanth in Muttu and Padayappa and a couple of films with Kamal Hassan. “Sanjay’s role of a cop is very

different from what we have seen in Dabangg. Prachi is a software engineer. She falls in love with him and marries him,” Srikant said. The co-producer is confident about the fate of the film even before it releases. “This film is a remake of a superhit Tamil film. And in the

past we have seen that remake films like Wanted, Rowdy Rathore are doing quite well at the Bollywood box office. We are sure this film will also do well,” Srikant said. The shooting will commence from August 22 and it will release in first week of May next year. PTI

Keira snags female lead in Jack Ryan Beckham reunites with Spice Girls for Olympics closing ceremony rehersal

T

he Olympics closing ceremony is going to be spicy. And girl-powered. Get ready, world, because as E! News exclusively reported, the Spice Girls — Posh, Sporty, Baby, Scary and Ginger — were caught in rehearsal mode in London as they prepare to take the stage for Sunday night’s British extravaganza. Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell were spotted wearing all black and riding atop lit-up black cabs. The girls were rehearsing an as-yet-unknown number in East London. The Beckhams have the distinction of bookending these games, as David Beckham was responsible for chauffeuring the Olympic torch into the stadium.

K

eira Knightley kicked off her career in the giant Pirates of the Caribbean movies before moving on to more highbrow fare, but she’s going to be getting back to action soon, taking the female lead role in Jack Ryan. She'll star opposite Chris Pine as the title character in the reboot of the franchise that brought us Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger back in the day. Knightley will play Ryan’s wife, who is in danger after Ryan discovers a terrorist plot to collapse the United States economy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Knightley was the first actress the studio approached for the part, and they had auditioned the likes of Evangeline Lilly and Felicity Jones before returning to Knightley. She’s the first person besides Pine to be confirmed in the cast, though Kevin Costner was recently rumored for a “colead” role as a CIA agent somehow responsible for Ryan’s work.

Johnny Depp catches break in concert battery lawsuit

J

ohnny Depp is used to playing outlaws on the big screen, but in real life, the law is on his side. On Thursday, Los Angeles Superior Court judge dismissed many of the claims made against the heartthrob by an anonymous woman stemming from an alleged incident at an Iggy and the Stooges concert at the Hollywood Palladium back in December. The plaintiff, identified only as “Jane Doe”, sued the actor and promoter Live Nation in April, accusing his entourage and bodyguards of roughing her up as she returned to her VIP seat in Depp's vicinity to the point where her clothes were “disheveled” and her shoes came off. On another occasion, she alleges the Lone Ranger star’s security detail dragged her on the floor of the venue, causing her pants to fall off her torso and “exposing her buttocks” to other concertgoers.

Lindsay Lohan crashes Francesca’s bash

T

he oft-troubled-butcomebacking-as-oflate actress seems to have hit yet another bump in the road — and this time she’s crashed with E! star Francesca Eastwood and her photographer boyfriend Tyler Shields (who’s previously worked with Linds). Not only has E! News confirmed that there was indeed a public snafu involving Lindsay at the Francesca and Company star’s birthday bash in Los Angeles, but Francesca and Tyler also exclusively share their thoughts on Lindsay’s outburst. Us Weekly reports that Lindsay Lohan caused a massive scene at Hollywood hot spot Bootsy Bellows where Francesca was celebrating her birthday with a small circle of friends. According to the report, Francesca and her guests were seated in a private area when Lindsay came over and started screaming that Francesca should leave, shouting, “I’m a star, she’s a nobody, get her out of here!” Lindsay’s rep simply responded with a “no com-

ment” when questioned about the alleged antics, but Francesa and Tyler exclusively gave E! News the LiLo lowdown: “There was a burst of chaos, and as quickly as it started, it was over. After the fact, we were all a bit confused about what just happened.” “I'm not sure what exactly sparked Lindsay’s outburst,” Francesca adds. “Regardless, I still had an amazing birthday and Parent Trap is still my favourite movie.” And although the E! star and her BF clearly made the best of the incident, there may be a much greater cause for concern on Lindsay's end. A source reveals to E! News that Lindsay has a real problem with alcohol and her “life is a mess.” The insider continued, adding that when Lindsay drinks she stays out all night, loses control and becomes impossible to get through to.

F

orget garden-variety buzz. The possibility that Brad Pitt is marrying Angelina Jolie this weekend in France is getting "real buzz." So says an excited but unnamed source, based on rumours that the couple are hosting some kind of event at their château with guests including Pitt's parents and Jolie’s engagement-ring jeweler.

But multiple sources tell PEOPLE there is no wedding this weekend. (Reps did not respond for comment.) “Under French law couples have to get married at the town hall,” Patrick Mareschi, deputy culture secretary of the nearby village of Correns, tells Reuters. “Unlike with a religious wedding, there’s no way a couple can hold a civil ceremony at their own home.” Which is pretty much what the photo agency X17 found out. "We sent an X17 photographer all the way down to the south of France — it’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere — to check out Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s chateau Miraval to see just what's going on and... drumroll, please ... there's nothing going on!” the site says. Not only did its photographer not find any signs the couple — no security guards, no party planners — it didn’t even see evidence of other rumours that Pitt was hosting a wedding anniversary party for his parents.

Keanu and Alex in Bill & Ted 3

T

alk about some excellent news. Not only does it seem like Bill & Ted 3 is actually happening, but stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are attached to reprise their roles and according to a new Vulture report, Dean Parisot is attached to direct. But that means Parisot won’t be able to start filming until after Red 2 wraps, but there could be worse news. At least this movie is actually happening! Bill & Ted creators Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson already wrote a script for the project that will share with audiences where Bill and Ted are in today’s world instead of having the new movie be either a sequel or a prequel.

Both Reeves and Winter have been interested in returning to the material for a while, so it seems like whatever script Solomon and Matheson created was good enough for them.

Dutt provided a late boost to India’s medal collection in the 30th Olympic Games by claiming a memorable bronze in the men’s freestyle 60 kg category, thus becoming the third Indian grappler to achieve the feat in the country’s Games history. The 29-year-old Yogeshwar produced a heroic show on the wrestling mat as he worked his way through three rounds of repechage to snatch the bronze medal and take India’s tally to a record five medals — one silver and four bronze — at the Excel Arena. Meanwhile, Sushil Kumar who has already carried India’s flag at the London Games will now have to wrestler his way as he carries India’s hopes of an elusive gold medal. AGENCIES

won Serbia’s debut gold of the London Games Saturday as Anthony Obame made history with Gabon’s first ever Olympic medal in the women’s and men’s heavyweight taekwondo. Obame lost to Carlo Molfetta of Italy on a judges decision in the men’s final, but he was still able to celebrate a huge achievement for his west African country — recognised by a phone call from his President Ali Bongo. “I think it’s a good start for us. We have to try to get more medals in the future,” said the silver-medallist, who missed out on gold by a matter of seconds. “For now it’s just me, but I hope that other people from Gabon will win medals at other Olympic Games and have the same success as me,”

Milica Mandic he added. “I tried to go for the gold, but he was more experienced than me. He is the 2010 European champion. I hope to come back in the future and do better.” Obame led the final 9-6 with less than 30 seconds left, but Molfetta caught him with a three-point head-kick to level the scores. The Italian was the more aggressive in the sudden death period of golden point and although neither fighter scored, he did enough to take the judges decision.

LONDON: Germany won the Olympic title for the second successive time when they triumphed 2-1 in a thriller against Netherlands, the former champions, in a blood and thunder final on Saturday. Both goals were scored by Jan Philipp Rabente, who thus denied the Dutch their dream of becoming the first nation to win both hockey golds at the same Games. It was also frustrating for the Dutch as they had beaten the Germans in their pool match earlier in these Games. But this is a very resilient German team, which they proved by scoring three late goals to defeat world champions Australia in the semi-finals. Sure enough it produced another surge, and but for three fine saves by Dutch ‘keeper Jaap Stockmann in

LONDON: Extending their Olympic dynasty run to a fifth gold medal in a row, the United States women’s basketball team overpowered France 86-50 in Saturday’s final. Candace Parker produced game highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds to power the US Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) stars to their 41st Olympic victory in a row and their seventh crown in the past eight Olympics. “For USA basketball to do it five times in a row, that’s really special,” Parker said. “We’re never going to take anything for granted. That’s the key. You never want to be the team that ends the streak. It’s great for us to be the team that keeps the tradition going.”

In a rematch of the Beijing Olympic final, Brazil shrugged off their shaky start and again proved too strong for the Americans, winning by scores of 11-25,

Brazil, meanwhile, struggled in the group stage, losing twice in their pool but scraping into the quarter-finals in fourth place.

Once into the knockout phase they delivered two dominant performances with Sheilla Castro, Thaisa Menezes and Fabiana Claudino rounding into form. US started strongly and capitalized on a plethora of Brazil’s errors. But the Brazilians regrouped for the second set and after going ahead with a narrow third-set win were AFP full of confidence.

LONDON: Britain’s Mo Farah clinched an Olympic long distance double here on Saturday, storming to a pulsating victory in the 5,000m just one week after his triumph in the 10,000m. The Somalia-born runner timed his kick to perfection to cross in 13min 41.66, fighting off Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebreskel, who took silver in 13:41.98, and Kenya’s Thomas Longosiwa, who claimed bronze (13:42.36). from fifth to second she had given herself too much to do. Savinova timed 1min 56.19sec to Semenya’s 1:57.23 while another Russian, Ekaterina Poistogova, took bronze. “It’s just amazing. Right now I can’t feel anything, but I’m amazed,” said the 26-yearold champion. Semenya accepted that she had not run the greatest tactical race of her life.

cemented his place in Olympic folklore by claiming a second threegold medal haul in successive Games as Jamaica stormed to a world record-breaking 4x100m relay victory on Saturday. It was the perfect send-off to a track and field programme at the Olympic Stadium dominated by Bolt, who became the first athlete in history to successfully defend his Olympic 100 and 200m titles earlier this week. His part in the podium-topping relay team means he has now replicated his treble gold showing in the Beijing Games in 2008.

The quartet of Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, double Olympic sprint silver medallist Yohan Blake and Bolt scorched to 36.84sec, beating their previous record of 37.04sec set in the 2011 worlds in Daegu. The United States claimed silver in a national record of 37.04sec, with Trinidad and Tobago taking bronze in 38.12sec after Canada were disqualified. “It’s always a beautiful thing to end on this note,” said Bolt. “Last year we did it at the world championships, this year we did it again so for me it’s wonderful feeling to end on a high note. “It was a great championship, I’m happy. LONDON: Russia’s Yelena Lashmanova won the women’s 20km walk Olympic title on Saturday in a new world record of 1hr 25min 02sec. The 20-year-old’s late surge saw her pass longtime leader and defending champion Olga Kaniskina of Russia (1hr 25min 09sec) while China’s Qieyang Shenjie set an Asian record in taking bronze (1hr 25min 16sec). LONDON: Usain Bolt pledged to keep pushing the barriers after the Jamaican team’s astonishing relay triumph on Saturday but admitted he may have reached his peak at the London Olympics. The sprint superstar anchored the 4x100m relay team to a world record of 36.84sec and matched his triple gold showing in Beijing in 2008, in a typically showman-like finale to his Olympic campaign. “For me it’s just great that we closed the show on a bang, that is what it meant to me,”

said Bolt, who took the baton from Yohan Blake, the man he beat to retain both his 100m and 200m titles.

Walcott wins javelin gold LONDON:

Games chief hails Bolt London Games chief organiser Sebastian Coe hailed Bolt as “fantastic” for the sport of athletics. “He’s a powerful influence. Is he over the top? It’s fine, it’s him. It’s like telling Daley Thompson to behave in the decathlon,” he said. “Athletics is not a sport of automatons. He’s fantastic... part of the beauty of our sport.”

Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott won the men’s Olympic javelin title on Saturday to become, at 19, the youngest winner of the gold medal. Walcott threw a national record of 84.58 metres while Oleksandr Pyatnytsya of Ukraine took silver (84.51) and Finland’s Antti Ruuskanen the bronze (84.12). Walcott gave his country

their first athletics Olympic medal outside the sprints. It is also only their second gold medallist — Hasely Crawford’s victory in the 1976 men’s 100m being the first. “I started javelin in 2009,” said Walcott. “It wasn’t the most popular event in Trinidad and Tobago so hopefully it will be known now more and field events will be done. “I am more than stunned. I am surprised by my perforAFP mance,” he added.

The Frenchman, whose one-handed backhand is rated as one of the most flawless in the men’s game, never let Isner into the match, running the big man around the court and forcing errors from the American eighth seed. Gasquet took the first set into a tiebreaker, earning a 4-2 lead off a passing shot before taking the 42minute opener on the first of three set points with an overhead winner. In the second, Gasquet broke for 4-2 with another pass past Isner and profited three games later from two consecutive forehand errors from his opponent to earn the victory. “It’s great to be in another final this season,” AFP he said.
