arlier, a small mosque in the Secretariat compound was developed into a big venue for the faithfuls among employees to offer Friday prayers. It was facilitated by the former chief secretary Jannat Hussain last year. He earned praise for providing a room adjacent to the mosque exclusively for women to offer prayers. Now, a small temple located on the Secretariat premises is being developed into a big temple. The chief secretary
Pankaj Dwivedi laid the foundation stone for the new construction today (Saturday). The temple committee is also collecting donations for the construction apart from seeking help from the government. The employees have their own clocks to charter their day. They come first to the canteen and some after the cuppa proceed to the places of worship where they pray for at least 10-15 minutes. Discussions of the previous day’s happening follow, and then they proceed to their sections. Soon, it’s lunch break
which lasts longer than the official break. Not long after, it would be tea break, though officially there is no tea break. Not that there are not employees who stick to the official timings and do not go about wasting times. There are, but they are in a minority. Then there are sections where employees have idols of gods on their desks or cupboard. The pooja is done rigorously and religiously. If Monday is for Lord Shiva, Tuesday is for Mahalakshmi. Thursday is for Sai Baba, Saturday Balaji and so on (on Sundays and holidays the deities have to take care of themselves). Even prasadam is distributed in the sections from time to time. Since there is no electronic swiping for attendance, any time is good time to clock in. Now, some Christian employees are wondering why not a Church. It’s only just, you know! Government comes and goes, the rituals go on forever. (With inputs from Inkeshaf Ahmed)

hile the government is debating whether it’s the bicycle or the chappals that would serve the students better, the Anantapur municipal commissioner Neelakanta Reddy has gone one step ahead and began visiting residential colonies on bicycles to learn about people’s problems. On Friday, he bicycled into some of the slums. It was a refreshing experience for the people who are used to pilot cars and flashing lights to see officials of various wings of the civic body following the commissioner on bicycles. The commissioner interacted with people and tried to understand drainage, garbage removal, drinking water supply and other problems. He said that while going by bicycle would make it easy for him to go into labyrinthine lanes of slums, it would also help him and other officials to stay fit. The commissioner wishes to visit slums and colonies along with his team of officials at least for one week in every month.
fter officials found empty liquor bottles lying around in the State secretariat, the government has now decided to come down heavily on the offenders. The government has now imposed a strict ruling that no liquor bottles should be permitted within the secretariat premises nor will consumption of alcohol be allowed inside. To this effect, special secretary, Ajay Misra, issued special orders on Friday that employees found drinking liquor or were found under the influence of alcohol or with liquor bottles in their possession would be punished and dealt with severely. He directed the CSO to see that all the blocks are checked in the secretariat by a special force. The vehicles coming into the venue after dropping
the officials must be checked without fail. The police in mufti must move discreetly and check the venue from time to time on the happening in the secretariat. All sections must be locked by 7pm. Any one working after 7 pm, must inform the CSO. The house keeping staff must clear the garbage two times in a day.

Women will be at the centre stage With the seventh edition of the Qadir Ali Baig festival ready to roll, we catch up with the man behind the scenes — Mohammad Ali Baig, for a quick chat
Padmini C padmini.c@postnoon.com
I
t doesn't happen too often but when it does, it's a sight to behold. Invites are sent out, venues are set, chairs laid out, the dias is gleaming, the audience is seated, the curtain waiting to rise – and so, ladies and gentlemen, theatre has come to town. Amateur productions by home-grown theatre groups notwithstanding, the Qadir Ali Baig festival is undoubtedly among the biggest theatre events in the city's cultural calendar. With a view to continue his father's legacy and revive the state of theatre in Hyderabad, ad-man Mohammad Ali Baig started the foundation in 2005 and the rest as they say is history. In its seventh year since, the festival has gained in size and stature, commanding the presence of an eclectic but very acclaimed melee of artistes from across the country. We talk to the man himself and find out about what's in store for us this season. The theme for this year's festival seems to be women directors from across the subcontinent. Tell us more about it. We always try to do something different every year. Last year, it was panIndian theatre and world theatre before that. And this time, we are going to focus on women directors of the subcontinent. The reason behind it is simple. So many women are doing such great work but are not visible except as artistes on stage. However, there are serious women writers, producers, directors. So we want
to bring them to the forefront and gave them their right place under the sun. Who are some of the people we can expect to see in this edition of the festival? We are going to have some of the most respected women-directors from across the country and Pakistan including Nadira Babbar, Usha Ganguli, Neelam Man Singh, Mohan Agashe, Lilette Dubey, Keerthi Jain, Meeta Vasisht among others, come to perform in the city. Are you content with the way theatre has taken off in the city? The number of plays you see happening in the city just this week is more than the number of plays that would happen in a year, five to six years ago. The aim of Qadir Ali Baig foundation was not to produce but to promote theatre. A lot of hard work has gone into it but it's definitely paid off. While it is still in amateur stage, it's grown tremendously. With time, the quality of the productions will get better too. Has the audience also evolved? Absolutely. The audience for theatre has grown multi-fold. Anywhere there is a play in the city now, it has a good number of people attending and appreciating it. It has encouraged more and more amateur theatre groups to perform their productions. This time, the Qadir Ali Baig festival will clash with the Children's festival. Is that going to be a hiccup? Yes, it so happened that they clashed. But I don't think it will be a problem. The audiences for both events are going to be very different.

He said that it was always KCR, who was coming to the rescue of the Congress whenever it was in trouble. He also said that Congress and YSR Congress had colluded. If necessary, his party would move a no-confidence motion against the government and then it would be known who had colluded with whom. He said that before they moved a no-confidence motion, TRS and YSR Congress MLAs should meet the Governor and request him to
direct the Chief Minister to seek confidence vote. He said that his party would then decide whether or not to participate in the discussion on the confidence motion. Errabelli said that they had to submit a memorandum to the Governor as the Congress and the TRS parties had not responded. Replying to questions on a second SRC on Telangana, he said they would not accept the proposal. He said they only want Telangana with Hyderabad. He also suggested that an independent organisation should be formed under the leadership of Konda Lakshman Bapuji to achieve Telangana.

You can prevent diabetes Postnoon News
Countdown to World Diabetes Day
“T
he incidence of diabetes in our country is extremely high. As Indians we are all more prone to developing diabetes and hence it is essential for us to get ourselves screened for the ailment regularly. Patients with diabetes should realise that if it is not properly managed they can be prone to serious conditions like hypertension, heart problems, kidney failure, eye problems etc,” says Dr Rajasekhar Chakravarthi, nephrologist at Care Hospital. Another important factor to be kept in mind, he says, is that if one person in the family has been diagnosed with diabetes then it means that the rest of the family is also at risk. “Every member of the family should get himself/herself checked routinely to monitor their health better. This happens because genetically diabetes is such that it runs in families. The kind of lifestyle one leads also
Dr Rajasekhar Chakravarthi, nephrologist, Care Hospital plays a role in the incidence of diabetes. Often the symptoms are silent till the disease begins to manifest in the form of complications,” explains Dr Rajasekhar. Considering obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle are the leading factors for the rising incidence of diabetes, spreading awareness amongst school children is of the utmost importance. “I recently spoke to students of a city school and found that they
are very aware of the kind of health risks people face these days. Hence it would make sense to spread awareness about diabetes among them. They should be educated about diabetes and its resultant problems, the importance of exercise and how excessive salt can also create health problems,” he adds. If one has been diagnosed with diabetes then regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is very important. But mere monthly tests do not suffice. “Dia-
betics should monitor their blood glucose levels at least once a week at home. This will help them be more aware of how their sugar levels are and the kind of managing they require. Also with more frequent logs about blood sugar levels, doctors can also treat the patient better and accordingly modify treatment,” says Dr Rajasekhar. He goes on to add that although diabetes is a potentially dangerous disease, it is completely preventable. “Awareness is required, and people should know what they should do to control diabetes. Also lifestyle modifications like a controlled calorie intake, regular exercise and healthy living can help delay or prevent the onset of diabetes. What people need to remember is that 15 per cent of the population in our country is dealing with diabetes. A routine health checkup and steps to control sugar levels can help avoid complications,” he says.

Human right activists protest arrest of T men under PD Act HYDERABAD: Human rights activists on Friday urged chief secretary Pankaj Dwivedi to advise the district collectors not to take a hasty decision of booking Telangana activists under Prevention Detention Act. They also demanded a review of the case filed against TRS politburo member Dr Cheruku Sudhakar. MLC Chukka Ramaiah, Pothuri Venkateshwara Rao, Prof Hara Gopal and Jeevan Kumar and Prof Rama Melkote have called on the chief secretary in the Secretariat and presented a memorandum. Speaking to the media, Chukka Ramaiah said that they have expressed their dismay and shock over the use of PD Act on social activists participating in the struggle for achieving Telangana state. The movement has been very peaceful and democratic. The Centre has been repeatedly saying that Telangana statehood was a just demand and very soon it would be fulfilled. But, shockingly, the state government was resorting to repressive measures by invoking provisions of PD Act.

A legislation in offing to protect street vendors NEW DELHI: The government is working on a central legislation for protecting the livelihood rights and social security of street vendors, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Kumari Selja said Friday. She said a model bill that provides property rights to slum dwellers has also been prepared by her ministry and it will be circulated to all the states. Talking to mediapersons here, Selja said the ministry had circulated a model bill in 2009 concerning street vendors but only one state had enacted a legislation. The minister, addressing a press conference, said they will try to bring in the winter session of parliament the draft Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, 2011 that seeks to establish an oversight mechanism for the real estate sector. She said the ministry got representations from street vendors and their associations to bring a central legislation which would be uniformly and mandatorily applicable across all states and union territories. "We have decided to go in for a central legislation... We are

intend to prevent harassment of street vendors by police and civic authorities. The bill, she added, will be based on basic principles such as demarcation
of vending zones for street vendors, robust and effective grievance redressal mechanism and adequate representation to street vendors, particularly women, in institutional structures created for proper implementation of the proposed law. Selja said the ministry was redeveloping the slum redevelopment strategy by assigning property rights to them throughout Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY). "We have gone for model bill and are sharing it with state governments," she said. RAY, which has been devised with the aim to make the country free of slums, proposes decisive action for inclusive urban development and acknowledges the presence of poor in the cities, recognises their contribution as essential to the city's functioning and redress fundamental reasons that tie them down to poverty. The draft Model Property Rights to Slum Dwellers Act, 2011 says that every landless person living in a slum in any city or urban area on June 4, 2009 shall be entitled to a dwelling space at an affordable cost.
Slum dweller or a collective of slum dwellers shall be given a legal entitlement and the dwelling space provided shall not be transferable. The draft bill says that the dwelling space may be provided "in-situ" (at the place of residence) as far as possible unless dictated by public interest or natural exigencies. It provides for constitution of grievance redressal committee and establishing a state slum redevelopment authority. Selja said to address the credit needs of economically weaker sections, the ministry had proposed to create a credit risk guarantee fund (CGFS) under RAY. Under CGFS, the central government will provide credit guarantee to housing loans upto Rs.5 lakh extended by lending institutions for low income housing. The guarantee cover available under the scheme would be to the extent of 90 percent of the sanctioned housing loan amount for a loan amount of up to Rs.2 lakh and 85 percent for loans between Rs.2 lakh and Rs.5 lakh. A sum of Rs.1,000 crore has been earmarked as initial corpus for CGFS.

Raja’s first plea rejected
Fast track justice: Man gets death for rape, murder
NEW DELHI: With the world watching, the 2G case trial which some have described as a “class war” and an “anti-elite backlash” against the rich being above the law, began in New Delhi on Friday.
THRISSUR: A Fast Track Court here on Friday sentenced a 30year-old man to death for raping and murdering a young woman after pushing her out of a running train, holding that he committed the crime in a “diabolic manner” deserving no leniency. Pronouncing the judgement in a packed court, Judge K N Raveendra Babu observed the 23-year-old victim was raped in a brutal and cruel manner and the accused Govindachamy deserved the highest punishment. Though security was tightened in the court premises in view of public interest in the case, the van in which the convict was taken out after the proceedings was stoned by the crowd a couple of times. Govindachamy was taken to the Central Prison in Kannur. The murder of Soumya in February this year near here had sparked widespread public outcry over the safety of women travelling in trains.
2G CASE On the first day, a plea by former telecom minister A Raja that he would not cross-examine prosecution witnesses unless the CBI probe is over in 2G spectrum case, was dismissed the court. Raja made the plea minutes before Special Judge O P Saini commenced formal trial, beginning it with the recording of first prosecution witness, Reliance Capital Ltd vice president Anand Subramaniam’s statement. “As soon as the investigation in this case, which started on
MA Parameshwari, wife of A Raja at Delhi court on Friday October 21, 2009, is complete and all the statements as mandated in section 244 of the CrPC as supplied to the applicant, the right to recall the witnesses for cross examination will be exercised,” Raja said in an application to the court. Appearing for Raja, senior advocate Sushil Kumar told the court that the CBI has apprised the Supreme Court that their investigation in connection
with Loop Telecom is going on. Raja’s counsel said the court should ask the agency if the investigation as far as all the 17 accused is complete. CHANDIGARH: Not an astrological reason but only a casual pledge made 18 years ago by a batch of mechanical engineering students of the Punjab Engineering College (PEC) here saw them re-uniting on Friday. Dressed in white T-shirts with ‘Reunion 11.11.11’ printed on them, as the 1993 batch of students gathered in Chandigarh’s Sector 11 near house number 11 at 11 minutes past 11 a.m., the entire sequence of their reunion read 11.11.11.11.11.11.11. Visibly excited that over 35 of them were able to come for the reunion, including people from faraway Singapore, Dubai, Canada and places across India, the engineers made all the right noises as they marched from their meeting point to the PEC campus, 500 metres away. Shoppers and passers-by at the busy Sector 11 market, which is bang in front of the meeting point of the batch, were curiously amused at the unique reunion taking place. Some personnel of the Chandigarh police were seen at the venue as they gathered. “The idea was proposed in a very lighter vein and I am happy that it has actually materialised today. We have so many old stories to share about Sector
Reliance Telecom and Swan Telecom, a recipient of a telecoms licence. The judge heard the statement of the first prosecution witness, Anand Subramanian, the assistant vice president of Reliance Capital. One of the accused, Kanimozhi was seated, as she has been through hundreds of court appearances, with her husband. She was wearing a blue salwaar kameez and appeared composed. Raja was seated just a row away.
11,” Gurgaon-based Pankaj Gupta told IANS. Sumit Singla, another alumnus of PEC, said: “It is a big day for us as we have fulfilled our old dream. Though we were all connected with each other through telephone and e-mails, it is a thrilling feeling to meet each other in real. The special date of 11.11.11 has added extra flavour to the day.” The batch has also decided to undertake another unique initiative. They have set up a ‘PEC-MECH’ scholarship worth Rs.111,111 (Rs.One lakh eleven thousand one hundred and one). This amount will be given annually to a deserving and needy student from the mechanical engineering stream, batch members said. Authorities at PEC, now re-christened PEC University of Technology, had geared up to host the batch of students who came for the unique reunion. PEC is the alma mater of late NASA astronaut Kalpana Chawla. The sprawling PEC campus is located in Chandigarh’s Sector 12. It offers degree courses in various engineering streams. Originally started in 1921 in Lahore (now in Pakistan) as the Mugalpura Engineering College, PEC came to its present 146acre campus here in December 1953 near the Shivalik foothills.

Berlusconi’s next move: Politics or escape? ROME: Silvio Berlusconi will likely be forced to stay in politics to save his ailing business empire and fight off legal troubles even if, as expected, he steps down on Saturday, analysts said. Following his momentous announcement earlier this week that he would give up power, the larger-than-life premier has, unusually, stayed out
of the public eye, saying he felt ‘liberated’ and ruling out any future election run. But the 75-year-old politician added “Maybe I’ll give a hand on election campaigns, that’s something I’ve always been very good at.” He remains a lawmaker for the People of Freedom (PDL) party that he founded in a parliament whose mandate only
runs out in 2013. Some however are suggesting — at least for the moment half in jest — that the troubled billionaire could flee his woes altogether and choose a life of luxurious exile like his political patron Bettino Craxi. Berlusconi was caught calling Italy ‘a shitty country’ in a phone intercept leaked earlier this year.

California Occupy activists told to leave after fatal shooting
An Occupy Oakland demonstrator participates in a candle light vigil after a man was shot and killed
OAKLAND: Police ordered anticapitalist protesters in California to abandon their camp on Friday after a fatal shooting, at least the fourth death this week in antiWall Street camps across the US. The mayor of Oakland — where violence has flared in recent weeks, at one point shutting one of America’s biggest ports — urged campers ‘to leave voluntarily’ while police said they
should disperse immediately. Deaths have also been reported in or near protest centers in Vermont, New Orleans and Salt Lake City, while police in Oregon have warned they will break up a camp in Portland this weekend. In Oakland a man was shot Thursday at the edge of the camp, apparently after a dispute, although the Los Angeles Times reported that Oakland Police
Department indicated the victim may not have been part of the protest movement. The protesters are part of the Occupy Wall Street movement that sprang up in New York in September, then spread to cities nationwide, to demonstrate against perceived unfairness in the US economy and the power of big banks. Clashes first erupted in the
“In a few months I’m going to go away,” he said. His most likely destination — in the view of analysts and comedians alike — would the Caribbean island of Antigua, which does not allow extraditions and where Berlusconi owns a sprawling and secluded complex of villas. “Berlusconi will either head for Antigua to escape the legal heat or start mustering his
troops to try and get back in again,” said James Walston, a professor at the American University in Rome. One of the premier’s most loyal friends, television anchorman Emilio Fede — currently under investigation for procuring prostitutes for Berlusconi — swore this week that he would follow the tycoon to the Caribbean if he goes.
Californian city in October, leaving an Iraq veteran hospitalized, while protesters forced the busy international docks to close for 24 hours on November 2. Thursday’s shooting occurred just as Occupy Oakland was celebrating the camp’s one-month ‘birthday’ — turning the event into a candlelight vigil, amid renewed calls from critics for protesters to leave the downtown plaza. “You have sent the world a strong message; now it is time to go home,” said the Oakland Police Officers Association, while Mayor Jean Quan added: “The risks are too great... We’re encouraging people to leave voluntarily.” Meanwhile a man was found dead on Thursday in his tent at a protest camp in Burlington, Vermont, from what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to police citing preliminary reports. Tensions rose when armed police ordered protesters out while investigations unfolded. Local media footage showed the city’s mayor intervening to ask that police release a demonstrator they had detained. “We believe the tents will need to be removed to ensure the safety of those involved in the protest, the public, and our law enforcement officers,” said local police chief.
Kite-flyers under terrorism act LAHORE: Kite-flyers here would now be booked under Terrorism Act if they were found deliberately endangering lives of people by using dangerous strings, a police official has said. Lahore’s capital city police officer (CCPO) Ahmad Raza Tahir has directed a complete ban on kite-flying and asked all SHOs to ensure indiscriminate action against the usage of prohibited elements, such as dangerous strings, to ensure safety of innocent lives, the Daily Times reported. He also warned of strict action against anyone found involved in aerial firing and those indulging in the stringmaking and kite-flying for which all divisional superintendents (SPs) will be held responsible for their respective areas. On Wednesday evening, a 30-year-old man died in Lahore after a stray kite’s string cut his throat. The man was on his way to work on his motorcycle when a stray kite string cut his throat; as a result of which he fell down on the road near Mandi Stop on Multan Road.
11.11.11 auspicious wedding day in KL 400 couples tie the knot at a temple in Kuala Lampur KUALA LUMPUR: Four hundred couples tied the nuptial knots at the largest Chinese temple in Kuala Lumpur — Thean Hou Buddhist temple — on Friday as it was the 11th day of the 11th month in the 11th year of this century. The date that comes only once in a century could literally translates to ‘eternal love’ in Mandarin, Xinhua reported. The mass wedding ceremony was held as per Buddhist
rites and solemnised by a high priest along with several other priests who chanted prayers to bless the newly weds. Adding the numbers in 11.11.2011, its the auspicious number 8. While a few believe getting married on the triple numbers would bring them a lifetime of luck and fortune, the rest did it just because its a nuptial date they can never forget. “November 11, 2011 is an extraordinary date I am getting
married on the day my fiance is turning 26,” said Luo Jia Wan. He proposed to Zhang Hui Fang last year on the same date. According to the wedding organisers, the youngest registered for marriage Friday was 18 years old while the oldest aged 47. Adding charm to this special occasion of weddings, the temple gave away prizes that included two classic cars and honeymoon packages and gifts to the newly-weds.

Drupal to grow 4 times in India O ver two per cent of websites in the world, including a number of US government websites such as the official site of the Whitehouse (www.whitehouse.gov), House of Representatives, Department of Energy, Commerce, Health etc., work on Drupal platform. The official sites of USAID, the World Bank and Recovery.gov also deliver services using Drupal. In recent months, various Government of India organisations, including the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research have also adopted Drupal as their communication platform. Delhi University as well as leading advocacy groups such as India Water Portal leverage Drupal to drive their digital initiatives and it is expected to grow by four times in India. Dries Buytaert, the creator and project lead for the Drupal open source web publishing and collaboration platform and president of the Drupal Association, foresees a greater future for Drupal. India has the largest Drupal developer community, he said in an interview and since the content management system (CMS) is audited at many levels, there are no security concerns, he tells A. Saye Sekhar of Postnoon in an
Interview with Dries Buytaert interview. “Effectively, we are an army and Drupal has changed the CMS landscape,” he said. A native of Belgium, Buytaert holds a PhD in computer science and engineering from Ghent University.
Excerpts: How is Drupal different from Wordpress, Jumla, Ruby on Rails and other CMSs based on open source software? There are hundreds of differences between those platforms and Drupal. We have the biggest developer community
and Drupal is for them, while other CMSs are end-user friendly and are for low-end programming. Don’t you think customisation of the CMS through open source software is as costly as programming with the help of any licensed software? They are actually comparable and sometimes cheaper too, as most of the times you don’t need to write the codes. For proprietary software, codes will have to be written and it takes weeks or months. Drupal is alike a car. We will give all com-
ponents. If you can, you will be able to assemble the CMS. Or else, the developer community helps. In layman’s language, Drupal or Jumla can be compared with a fixed contours apartment, while the programmable CMS is akin to an independent bungalow. This means, a programmer enjoys a no-holdsbarred freedom in building a CMS, what do you say? It is actually the other way round. We give source code. We have no limitations. A lot of mobile solutions are working on our platform. Drupal is scalable in terms of adding applications, plugins, etc; while it is n ot possible with proprietary software. Is open source software politically correct? There is nothing to say whether the open source software is politically correct or not. The software is free. It is the value we create for organisations and their ecosystems that matters. We can offer an open source software and help the user take up commercial projects to make money. We help the world become economically viable. How easy is conversion of a software built on dot net platform to Drupal? Migration of the project depends on the complexity of the architecture of a website or portal. We have automated soft-
wares to conversion. But then, complexity, as I said, is the key. In fact, many websites across the globe migrated taking the software’s open data using Drupal layer as the front end to showcase the locked in data. Most proprietary software don’t have this flexibility. Is MySQL server a panacea for open source software websites? And it appears even these servers are as costly as the ones hosting portals/sites built on licenced versions? Hosting is usually cheaper. Where it takes five dollars to host website built on Drupal, it takes $ 400 to host a site built on proprietary software. Because our codes are written on light-weight PHP platforms, while others write it on Java or Dot Net platforms. However, if the architecture is complicated with too many applications, the space occupied varies and MySQL server too costs more. It is usually cheaper, though. Since the software is open source, what about the security concerns? How do you plan to address them? The software once written or for that matter any application or code in Drupal passes through 30-40 software engineers audit them and eliminate any bugs and glitches. So, the security issues don’t arise. We have different layers of errorhandling and measures to prevent virus attack.
Kingfisher seeks hike in bank loan limit NEW DELHI: Ailing Kingfisher airlines has said it has not asked for a bailout from the government butadmitted requesting banks to increase the loan limits to enable it meet rising operating costs due to increase in fuel prices and rupee devaluation. “Kingfisher has not made any bail out request to the government. We have only asked our banks for an increase in limits due to significant increase in operating costs caused by increase in fuel prices and rupee devaluation,” Sanjay Aggarwal, CEO, Kingfisher Airlines, said in a statement on Friday night. On the DGCA show-cause notice on flight cancellations, he said: “We did not feel the need for informing DGCA. In hindsight, we should have informed
them and we apologised to them for the same.” On speculation about the closure of the airlines, he said Kingfisher does not see any risk to its future or long term viability. Though the airline had maintained that the flight operations will normalise after November 19, the reconfiguration initiative will require up to 3 aircraft to be out of service over the next three months at any one time for this exercise to be completed. “It will reduce the number of fleet configurations from 7 to 3, improving operational flexibility. This initiative will add more seats to the fleet, improving revenue production of each aircraft,” he said. Aggarwal said no Kingfisher flight has been cancelled due to
lack of pilots or other staff. “The attrition of 100 pilots did not happen overnight. Kingfisher has sufficient number of pilots and a robust pipeline of
new pilots to continue to operate its scheduled flights,” he said. Admitting that there has been a few days delay for the last 2-3 months in payment of
employee salaries, he said all employees have been paid in the month the salaries were due. Kingfisher Airlines has rationalised its network to offer maximum and seamless connectivity and as per the revised schedule, it will offer 300 daily flights connecting 54 cities as compared to its previous schedule of 340 flights. Aggarwal also said guests remain Kingfisher’s top priority and that they reached out to all their guests who were booked on these cancelled flights to reaccommodate them either on our or other airline flights. “We offered full refund to those who so desired. We apologise to the guests who might have been inconvenienced,” he said.

It’s the moral crusaders who are the poppygate tyrants, not FIFA Dan Jones
W
hen George Orwell called sport “war minus the shooting” he wasn’t paying it any compliments. He had just watched the Soviet team Dynamo Moscow tour Britain in 1945 and had been disgusted by what he saw as sport’s regrettable tendency to stir up nationalist sentiment in the mind of the ordinary Englishman. There were few things Orwell liked more than being appalled at nationalist sentiment and he tended to see it everywhere. But I have been much in mind of his comment this week while reading about the absurd furore that you’ll excuse me for calling ‘poppygate’. The English Defence League was on the roof of FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Wednesday to protest the resistance coming from football’s world governing body to England’s wish to stitch a poppy logo onto their shirts for tomorrow’s friendly against Spain. I don’t know if you’ve had the EDL on your roof but it’s safe to say that when you hear the tramp of their jackboots read: Reebok Classics - filtering down through the loft, you know something has spiralled wildly out of control. The amount of fuss expended both by FIFA on one side and the entire British footballing
A poppy sewn into Ashley Cole's boot during the England training session and political establishment over the symbolic manner in which England, Wales and Scotland commemorate Armistice Day has been extraordinary. It has shown FIFA at their most constipated and selfimportant. It has also shown off another, regrettable force which governs so much of British public discourse now: the po-faced cant-ocracy, desperate to take offence at every turn. There is a sense in English football particularly but British football at large that FIFA, the great, grey-faced, bulgingpocketed monster of world football, have it in for us. This has been the case ever since the British media played an important role in laying bare some of
the alleged wild-west practices that took place during the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. David Bernstein, the chairman of the FA, has been a vocal critic of Sepp Blatter, even as the majority of the craven football world genuflects before him. The logical leap that is made is that FIFA, acting in vengeance, are now punishing the whole of England for its political failings, by refusing to allow the nation to honour its war dead. That is nonsense. Venal and absurd as FIFA are, they do not really give a monkey’s about whether England wear commemorative poppies on their chests, arms or backsides. The point is not the poppy.
The argument is not about whether a poppy is a symbol of respect for the dead or nationalist sentiment; a token of solemn thanks or a benevolent sort of swastika celebrating Allied victories in two long-ago wars. The point is that FIFA are a big organisation that likes making rules for their members to obey. They like to tell people what they can and can’t do. They don’t like to bend the rules for anyone, especially when they’re asked in an uppity fashion. They are the traffic wardens of world football. Fortunately, as we have seen, FIFA are also fairly spineless, and will roll over when threatened politically from men like the Duke of Cambridge.
But FIFA are not the only party at blame in poppygate. We must also question why we must work ourselves into throes of such epic sanctimony over the poppy and the England shirt. There are plenty of ways in which Britain’s football teams can do their rightful duty and pay respects to the soldiers who have fallen in defence of the realm. Plenty of them fall within FIFA’s jackass rules. Wreaths can be laid. Symbols may be stitched to tracksuits. Individual players, driven by the dictates of their conscience, can wear poppies in interviews, or donate their match fees to soldiers’ charities, or use their public profile to bring attention to the work done by the British services. It should not matter whether they wear a poppy - be it on their chest, armband or boots - on the field of play. FIFA were spitting on no one’s grave in refusing the original request. It is no ‘victory’ to be wearing the poppy on an armband. The world we live in is becoming ever more dominated by the tyranny of mass-consumer morality. If you don’t wear a poppy at all times, you’re viewed as ethically suspect. I’m sorry, but that really grates my cheese. I don’t like petty dictators at FIFA waving the stick about stupid rules. But I really can’t bear the pomposity of the poppy prefects, either.
Villas-Boas hit by FA’s charge on conduct C Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas on the touchline
helsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has been charged with improper conduct following comments he made about referee Chris Foy after his team’s 1-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers last month. The Blues boss was furious with the match official after the defeat against their west London rivals and said at the time: “The ref was poor, very
very poor. And it reflected in the result. “I spoke to him at the end and I was very aggressive to him. I don’t care if he’s okay or not. Everyone can have a bad day but this was not a bad day for us. It was a good day for us and a bad day for the referee. “I think he lost it and was card happy towards the team. I’m not happy with the difference of treatment. I don’t think the same
treatment was applied. “Apart from the fourth official, the other three were led by the emotions of the crowd and couldn’t deal with a game like this.” An FA statement said: “Andre Villas-Boas has been charged with improper conduct by the FA, following media comments he made about the match official after his side’s match at QPR.”

F1 must do more to rev-up the fans at new venues Jake Humphrey
E
arlier this week I sat down for dinner in London and ordered a coffee before my food, just to try and warm up - so this is the perfect time to jet out to the Middle East. Here on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, they have created an F1 oasis with perfect infrastructure. This is particularly apparent when juxtaposed with the chaos at the not-quite-finished Indian GP track in New Delhi which hosted the previous race. In the past 12 months, both South Korea and India have entered the F1 fray, and neither has been without problems. In 2010 insufficient drainage
meant a huge delay at the start in Korea, despite only limited rain. This year the crowd was sparse and there are doubts over the race’s future. India had more fans and more atmosphere but the circuit was clearly not fully finished. Those issues, coupled with the socio-economic problems that India has, leave people asking if F1 need to look at their policy of introducing new grands prix. There is no doubt F1 is a valuable marketing tool and commercial commodity for an emerging nation or a country that wants to make a global sporting splash. I believe that being held back won’t help a country like
British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton India, where F1 or the Commonwealth Games offer new opportunities for growth and development. Equally, South Korea is now one of the world’s biggest producers of cars and ships and
they’ve earned the right to host global sports events. It’s also easy to see how these moves benefit F1. Korea brings huge brands to the table and just imagine the revenue that would be generated if just
Tiger Woods back on top Tiger Woods putts on the 12th hole during day two of the 2011 Emirates Australian Open at The Lakes Golf Club on Friday

T
iger Woods has the overnight lead for the first time in almost a year, backing up his claims that he is finding his form again. The former world No1, now languishing at 58th in the rankings after two years of personal and injury turmoil, fired a 67 to be nine-under at the halfway stage of the Australian Open, one ahead of local veter-
an Peter O’Malley. The last time Woods closed the day on top was at his own Chevron World Challenge last De cember, when he blew a three-shot lead on the final round. However, the 14-time Major champion says his game has moved on and he is in the mood to claim his first title since the Australian Masters two years ago. “At Chevron I only really
played with one shot,” said Woods. “I hit basically a draw for the entire week. Right now I am able to move the ball both ways. It feels good [to be leading] but it feels good to actually be playing properly. It’s not like I’m slashing it all over the place, I’m hitting the ball well. “My whole goal is to win tournaments. That, to me, is what it’s all about. I got two more days to go, it’s going to be a tough couple of days with the wind supposed to stay blowing out there. It’ll be a fun test.” Having hit his first errorfree round in nine months for a 68 yesterday, Woods started from the 10th in benign conditions and charged up the leaderboard with five birdies on the back nine. A bogey at the 12th was a blow but he claimed the shot back at the next hole. Another bogey four holes from home was cancelled out after a beautiful approach shot at his penultimate hole and he was an inch away from an eighth birdie with a 12-foot putt at the last. With a bit more luck with his putting, Woods felt his lead could have been even more comfortable. “I played well today and basically I felt that I never real-
ly missed a shot,” he said. “Even though I shot five under it felt like it could easily have been eight or nine deep. I’ve just hit so many lips these first two days.” O’Malley made good use of his local knowledge to record a flawless 66, the best of the day at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney. “I play here a lot so I know where to hit it,” said the 46year-old. “The greens are still pretty tricky to read and you have to get the speed right.” For the last year O’Malley has being using an unorthodox ‘eyes shut’ putting technique when the ball has been within six feet of a hole. He closes his eye just before he hits it and said today: “It takes away the visual anxiety. I am not seeing what the putter is doing so I don’t feel any anxiety. I just let it flow.” Compatriot and world No7 Jason Day was a further shot back in third on seven under after a 68.Another Australian, Adam Scott, who is accompanied by Woods’ former caddie Steve Williams, is within striking distance at four under after signing for a 71 that included an eagle and a double bogey.
one per cent of India’s 1.2bn population bought an F1 ticket, dvd or team top. Korea is not the only race struggling to pull in crowds. China, and Turkey have also failed to capture the nations’ imagination. In Istanbul you’d hardly have known there was a race taking place this year so they’ve been dropped for 2012. How does F1 avoid a repeat of past issues in Austin from 2012, New Jersey in 2013 and Russia in 2014? Well many really want to see F1 giving back, tangibly, to the places it visits. I love this sport. It’s inspirational as well as aspirational but expecting the world to find that out for themselves is expecting too much.
Zaheer feels good about young pacers NEW DELHI: Itching to attain peak fitness ahead of the tough tour of Australia later this year, pace spearhead Zaheer Khan reckons the emergence of youngsters like Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron bodes well for Indian cricket. Yadav caught the eye of many during India’s one-day series against England and the subsequent first Test against the West Indies here and equally impressive was Aaron in the ODIs, and their efforts did not escape Zaheer’s attention. “It is a positive sign for Indian cricket. They have the pace,” Zaheer told PTI.

How does the Isha Mukoo isha.m@postnoon.com
T
he adage ‘marriages are made in heaven’ seems to be losing credence in today’s society, the increasing divorce rates in our society stand witness. With more and more people adopting broader and more westernized outlook, the values of marriage are not as permanent or as definite as they are used to be. Social activist, Uma Challa feels there is a greater need to communicate among couples. “I would say that there is lot of focus on growing up, getting a good education and making a career but nobody’s paying attention to the interpersonal relations,” she says. Throwing light on the issue, advocate Sangeeta Bhaskar tells us the divorce rates have multiplied three folds compared to the last two years, “The main reason for the divorce is incompatibility between the two individuals these days. The span for a couple being together has gone down to as low as six months to a year,” explains Sangeeta. There seem to be varied reasons for the divorces, from explanations ranging from “growing out of each other” to “not getting along well.” There are of course, genuinely worrisome reasons too. For instance, Smita got married to Ramesh only to realise in just a week that she had married a compulsive abuser. Not long after, she decided that it was time to put an end to the torture. Now, with an on-going divorce, Smita is shattered about her failed marriage and is back to staying with her parents. It was not a-happily-ever after for Simran either, when she married Ranjith. Only, it took Simran six years of torture before she gathered the courage to call it quits. It’s been two years now and Simran is in the midst of an ugly divorce and is living with her parents. Now, a fiercely selfdependent woman, Simran shares, “I bore all the insults of my husband thinking it will be fine eventually, which never happened. It was over the day I realised that he was having an affair with my best friend. I am going to stay with my parents for some time but I am surely going to move out and make my own name and bring up my daughter by myself. My parents will always support me and that is all I need from them.” Small screen actor Manini De, who is happily married to her second husband, actor Mihir Mishra for seven years now, shares her take on the happy and sad notes of relationships she has been through. “It takes two to tango, and in a relationship both the individuals need to be equally involved. When you are in that
cookie crumble? Marriages are based on trust, honesty and love. So when there’s a lack of these values, the result is a parting of ways. Today we explore the reasons why more couples are opting for divorce rather than seeing it through
rough patch you try to give your best and make that relationship work because that is how we have been brought up; to make things work. It is very important to have love in the relationship but if a third party enters then you realise that there is no use of putting any effort since the love is already gone.” Manini further says that one needs to realise that it is essential that the couple respect each other despite the differences and try to work with them rather than resent each other. “Resenting each other does not make a relationship work. You need to appreciate the fact that marriage is a happy compromise and if you are not ready for that, you don’t get into it. It has to be an ‘us’ versus an ‘I’ or ‘you’,” she explains On her relationship with Mihir, she says, “We also have lot of disagreements but that is the way a marriage is, you cannot be alike. You need to find humour in your life and the relationship and enjoy those small moments. I realised in my first marriage that there was no scope to go ahead so I walked out before things got worse. I did face a lot of flak after that but sometimes you need to put your foot down.” Ad Guru Prahlad Kakkar gives his take on the issue. “Our so called modern society still differentiates between men and women. The fairer sex is still ostracised by chauvinistic men. With time it’s only women who have developed modern thinking. It’s the majority of men who still can’t see a women progress and make a better career and give back to the society,” he says going on to add, “Earlier, women did not have the option or the courage to step out of her marriage owing to the societal set up and the financial dependence. A woman is the investor in making a house a home and most of the times she is the one who sacrifices, but when things go out of hand steps need to be taken.” He feels it’s mainly physical or mental abuse which lead to a divorce. Dr Savita Date Menon, a clinical psychologist, also agrees that extreme cases call for extreme measures. She says, “Although there is lack of patience nowadays among the younger couples, sometimes you need to draw the line. Marriages in the past lasted not because the partners were always delighted with the relationship but because there was no option. Also, the socio-economic pressure was something that stopped the couples from ending their relation.” Whether it be conflicts of interests and egos, irreconciliable differences or simply a decision taken in the interest of selfpreservation, divorce is slowly but surely becoming the reality of our age.

onda has announced plans to introduce a variety of concepts at the Tokyo Motor Show. First up, the AC-X is a "next-generation plug-in hybrid" with streamlined styling and two drive modes. The Micro Commuter Concept, on the other hand, is a pint-sized electric vehicle that can only accommodate a driver. It features unique styling and aviation-inspired controls. Next up, the small sports EV concept is a twoseat roadster with an aggressive design. Additional information is limited, but Honda says the SSEVC "maximizes the fun of driving while achieving excellent environmental performance." Besides the aforementioned vehicles, Honda will introduce a number of motorcycle and personal mobility concepts. The most notable is the RC-E sports bike, which has an electric powertrain and a 250cc-class body.

Going for the ‘kill’ German website offers cow-killing options for tastier beef
Harward woes
A
German beef-selling website is offering clients the bizarre option of choosing how their favorite breed of cow gets slaughtered. mycow.de, a beef-selling web-store owned by a company based in the northeastern German state of MecklenburgWestern Pomerania is all about offering customers choices. They allow people to choose from various breeds of cattle, like the succulent Angus, or the delicious Galloway, and even to order steaks from specific farms they own in the German countryside. But the weirdest think is they actually let people decide how they want their cow
slaughtered. That sounds kind of sick, right? Well it is but apparently the guys at mycow.de have an explanation for making this choice possible for their customers. The cows can either be killed traditionally in a slaughterhouse, or directly in the field, while grazing. The latter is considered more humane, and supposedly makes the beef tastier, because the animal isn’t subdued to stress in the final moments of his life. The road to the slaughterhouse is considered extremely unpleasant for cows, and the surging level of adrenaline in their system is said to toughen up the meat. “This is a much more gentle
Drunk and stupid
slaughtering process,” website operator Suzanne Marx told The Local, adding that the meat they sell comes from ‘happier cows’. Apparently few farmers use the field-killing method these days, because it’s more expensive and difficult to perform. It basically requires someone stunning the cow and quickly shooting it while it’s carelessly grazing, and then rushing it to the slaughterhouse. A 5-kg packet of bio-beef from mycow.de starts at $100. Marx claims there is a limit to how much clients want to know about the cows they eat, and the website doesn’t allow them to get to know or select a specific cow for slaughter.
WOBURN, MASS: A Delaware man convicted of fraud for faking his way into Harvard was ordered held without bail on Wednesday after admitting he violated his probation by citing the university on a job resume. Adam Wheeler, 25, was sentenced last year to 2½ years in jail and 10 years on probation for identity fraud and other charges. The sentence was mostly suspended; Wheeler served just one month in jail while awaiting trial. Prosecutors said he got into Harvard by falsely claiming that he had attended the exclusive Phillips Academy prep school in Andover and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Wheeler, originally from Milton, Del., was kicked out of Harvard in 2009 after he tried to get the school’s endorsement for Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships. Authorities said his application for the scholar-
ships contained a string of lies, including a list of books he said he had co-authored, courses he said he had taught and lectures he said he had given. After he left Harvard, Wheeler applied and was accepted to Stanford as a transfer student. Stanford rescinded his admission after media reports about his arrest. Under the terms of his probation, Wheeler was barred from representing himself as a Harvard student or graduate. Wheeler’s lawyer, Steven Sussman, acknowledged that Wheeler had violated that provision by saying on his resume and in a cover letter for a job application that he had attended Harvard. He said Wheeler lost a job in July and was feeling “financial pressure” to support himself and to pay Harvard the court-ordered restitution. “He obviously made a mistake,” Sussman said of Wheeler’s use of Harvard on his resume.

DUI suspect accidentally sets car on fire
LOUISVILLE: Police said a drunken driving suspect accidentally set her car on fire during a traffic stop. According to arrest records, an officer saw a car driven by 20-year-old Becca Voss weaving between lanes on Cardinal Bou-
levard around 2.53 am on Thursday. Police said Voss was also driving at 41 mph in a 25 mph zone. When the officer stopped Voss, she had red, glassy eyes and seemed disoriented, according to arrest records. Police said Voss dropped a cigarette in the car’s door, igniting papers in the door. Voss failed several field sobriety tests, police said, and her blood-alcohol level was 0.207 percent. The legal limit for driving in Kentucky is 0.08 percent. Voss was also in possession of her sister’s identification, according to arrest records. Voss is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.

With lithium, more is definitely better

A 3-D way to release magnetic energy... fast!
Increasing the amount of lithium coating on fusion reactor walls improves performance
A
team of scientists working at the US Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) has found that increasing the amount of lithium coating in the wall of an experimental fusion reactor greatly improves the ability of experimentalists to contain the hot, ionised gas known as plasma. Adding more lithium also enhances certain plasma properties aiding the reaction, the researchers found. “The lesson here for confining plasma is surprising and simple: When you use more and more lithium, the plasma confinement gets better and better,” said Rajesh Maingi, a physicist from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) who is on long-term assignment to PPPL. “This is not what we expected to see. We thought the effect would taper off at some point. But it doesn’t. When it comes to fusion plasmas, it’s “the more, the merrier.’” If plasma energy confine-
As more lithium is added (with increasing discharge number in yellow), the plasma light changes from red (from recycling of the deuterium fuel gas) to green (lithium emission from the edge of the plasma) and the overall (recycling) light levels decrease ment is improved, a fusion reactor can, in principle, be made smaller and, therefore,
cheaper. Energy confinement is a measure of how long (in seconds) power that is injected
into the plasma stays in the plasma before leaking out to the walls. Spraying lithium onto the inner surface of an experimental fusion device at PPPL known as the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) improves several other conditions for fusion, the experimenters found. The lithium reduced recycling — the problematic ricocheting of particles into the vessel wall and back into the plasma. Recycling leads to cooling, contamination, and, ultimately, dissipation of the energy of the plasma. In addition to reducing recycling, the lithium coating — and enhanced coatings based on it — also enhanced the reaction by decreasing chaotic instabilities both at the plasma’s edge, and also on a larger scale. The experiment’s results indicate that fusion machine designers may be able to reduce the size and the level of heating in future devices designed to use lithium coating technologies.
Prompt liver transplant boosts survival Some patients with organ inflammation from alcohol can benefit Nathan Seppa

eavy drinkers who have severe liver inflammation are much more likely to survive if they get a prompt liver transplant than if they wait a few months, new research finds. Allowing some alcoholics with a potentially lethal form of liver disease to move up the waiting list for a transplant — a controversial area of transplant policy — would save lives, researchers suggest in New England Journal of Medicine. About 10 to 15 per cent of donor livers go to people whose liver disease stems directly from alcohol, says Robert Brown, a hepatologist at Columbia University in New York City who wasn’t involved
in the new study. But the number is an estimate at best since many people who qualify for a transplant because of liver damage from other causes might also drink, he says. In the US, transplant guidelines require that alcoholics stay sober for six months before they can be placed on the waiting list for a liver transplant. Six months of abstinence and medication improve the health of many people with alcohol-related liver disease, but the delay can be fatal for those with a form of alcohol-induced liver inflammation that doesn’t respond to routine medication. About 70 to 80 per cent of people with this condition, called severe alcoholic hepatitis, die within six months. For the new study, physi-
cian Philippe Mathurin of the Claude Huriez Hospital in Lille, France, and his colleagues chose 26 patients to get a liver transplant within a few weeks of being diagnosed with alcoholic hepatitis. The patients had failed to respond to medication such as steroids, the typical treatment for the condition. The researchers also monitored 26 similar patients who didn’t receive transplants. Six months after surgery, six of the 26 transplant patients had died, compared with 20 of the 26 who didn’t get a liver transplant. These findings challenge the notion that transplant eligibility for all alcoholism-related liver patients must be linked to a prescribed abstinence period, Mathurin argues.
E
xperiments discover a 3-D process by which magnetic reconnection can release energy faster than expected by classical theories Scientists at the US Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have discovered a new process at work in a mysterious magnetic phenomenon that occurs both in the earth’s atmosphere and in space, playing a role in events such as the aurora borealis and solar flares. In a series of experiments on a device known as the Magnetic Reconnection Experiment (MRX), which replicates magnetic reconnection in the laboratory, a team of researchers found that many important plasma quantities are found to have strong variations in three dimensions very early in the process. This variation may aid in the formation of regions of high electric current with characteristics similar to what have been called “flux ropes.” Experiments show that when the reconnection rate spikes in this 3-D configuration, the high current ropes are ejected out of the reconnection region, leading to a sudden decrease in the current density. The researchers have termed this process a “current layer disruption.” “What makes this observation new and surprising is that the disruption process takes place in a truly 3-D way,” said Seth Dorfman, a graduate student at PPPL who was part of the group conducting the experiments. “In many previous studies, the transition to fast reconnection is a 2-D process in which there are no variations along the reconnection current direction. By contrast, the 3-D current ropes ejected during a disruption are highly localised in the third dimension.” These processes may be important for natural plasmas in space and astrophysics, Dorfman noted, where key plasma properties vary in all three directions. For example, current disruptions are also observed in plasmas in the magnetosphere, where the reconnection process is thought to trigger the aurora borealis. Efforts are ongoing to relate the new result to these observations, he said.

Things do not change; we change. Henry David Thoreau
Make the most of seasonal produce
Street food is not the best option
Ranjani Rajendra
Y
ou’ve been working hard throughout the year to stay in shape. From 40 minutes on the treadmill, floor exercises, light weights and keeping a strict watch on the number of calories you consume, you’ve been doing it all. But come winter and all your hard work seems in vain as you pile on those kilos. This is happening despite you not eating too much. According to research low amounts of vitamin D (mainly gotten from exposure to the sun) can lead to this weight gain in winters. And considering people like being indoors to stay out of the cold, this weight gain is natural. Add to that the lack of physical activity thanks to laziness during the c o l d e r months and you have a lethal combination. “In winters, people are generally more lazy, eat more comfort food, indulge in less exercise and as a result their body metabolism rate decreases. This in turn makes them pile on the kilos during winters,”
Winter care-6 says Dr Charita Adikane, nutritionist at Apollo Hospital. “The key is to eat balanced and more frequent meals. But since the meals are more frequent keep them light. Don’t binge,” she adds. Since winter is the season for many fruits and vegetables, it would make sense to eat more of those. Also the quality of produce during the colder months is much better. Vegetables like snow peas, carrots, leeks, cauliflower, broccoli, green peas and fruits like oranges and kiwis make
for delicious yet nutritious dining options. “Since people like to eat foods that help them stay
Dr Suneetha Sapur
warm in the cold they can opt for wholesome and healthy soups. Not only do they keep the body warm and satiated, they are also delicious and easily available. You can also eat dishes made using jowar,” says Dr Charita. Come winter and dry fruits are also available in plenty. “Nuts are an excellent source of nutrition. They also help keep the body warm. So you can step up your intake of dry fruits in this season. And you need not just eat them plain. You can powder them and add them to a glass of warm milk, make dry fruit ladoos and also use them in halwas or you can just dry
roast them to pop as a snack,” explains Dr Charita. Here is something you can try at home to keep you warm and cozy this winter.
Dry fruit mix also known as Bhanda Ingredients 1 cup almonds 1 cup pistachios 1 cup walnuts 1 cup cashews 1 cup raisins 1 cup moong dal ½ cup methi seeds 1 tsp ghee Sugar as per taste Method Dry roast all the dry fruits (except raisins) and set aside. Pound all the dry fruits to get a coarse mix. Be careful not to powder them. Dry roast the methi seeds and moong dal separately. Now heat the ghee in a pan and mix all the dry fruits, including raisins, moong dal and methi seeds and fry them till they turn brown. Add some sugar to this mixture and mix well. Eating one bowl of this will help keep the body warm and give you your dose of nutrition as well.
I like street food, they are not only delicious, they are extremely affordable too. But I am not sure about the quality and hygiene of these food items, how safe are they? Street food offers a wide variety of cuisines to satisfy our palate. Whether it is chaat, Chinese, South Indian dosa or idli they are all made to order in a short time. Although street food is quite enticing one must be aware of the cleanliness and freshness of the food stall or cart. Certain basic precautions should be taken to ensure one’s health safety. Non vegetarian foods and milk based food items get spoiled much faster than other foods, and especially in the summers the food gets spoiled much faster than it does in the winters. So please be careful when you choose what kind of street food you want to eat and do keep the season in mind too. If you notice that the food is kept, with flies swarming in the vicinity, then try to steer clear of that food. Chances are that the food could be contaminated with bacterial spores and other forms of microbes. Usually, the stall/cart owners use leftover oil for cooking food items. However, consumption of this oil is not healthy. Sometimes vegetables are not cleaned properly an example in this case being the potatoes stuffed in samosas. This might lead to Amoebiasis and Giardiasis which are widely prevalent in India. Preferably do not eat food items which are half boiled or half fried and half cooked. Remember, always to consume hot foods-hot and cold foodscold. (The writer is the director of Akkshaya Foundation and a consultant nutritionist at LV Prasad Eye Institute)

We are leaving the Samsung Galaxy Tab out of this because frankly, it doesn't come anywhere close to these amazing devices. Sorry Samsung!
Tablet Wars
iPad vs Kindle Fire vs Nook Tablet Barnes & Noble's new Nook Tablet may cost $50 more than Amazon's Kindle Fire, but B&N has no trouble explaining why that extra $50 is worth it. The brick-and-mortar bookseller will engage in a +mighty battle with Amazon and iPad-maker Apple this holiday season, with no other competitor even coming close. When you're shopping for your dream tablet, it's important to keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of each platform. This is where you will be the judge of the ever-popular debate — which tablet is better?
Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com
Barnes & Noble:
T
hough this retailer was on the ropes a few years back, it is projecting Nook devices to be a $1.8billion business this year. The company beat its online rival Amazon to launching both a 7-inch colour tablet and a touchscreen e-ink reader, and now they're challenging Amazon again with major upgrades of both, and similar pricing.
Selling points: The Nook Tablet may cost $50 more than the Kindle Fire, but B&N says that additional RAM and in-device storage are worth it. Offering in-store support at locations all over the nation, and a potentially more aggressive library of books, magazines, comics and kid titles, mean that it's going to hold its own in the lit department. And leveraging partnerships with Netflix, Hulu and other streaming media providers means that people who subscribe to those services will be drawn to this device.
‘free’. In other words, just buying the device and signing up for Prime is enough to guarantee you plenty of activities, and that's before you add in all of the free apps you can get at the Amazon Appstore for Android. And without more on-board memory, We're wondering how we'd use it to watch movies when we're on an aeroplane – We sure as heck won't be paying for Wi-Fi so we can stream a trickle of video off of a satellite to a jet flying at 500mph somewhere 32,000 feet above America.
On top of that, the $99 Nook Simple Touch reader is priced to challenge the ad-supported $99 Kindle Touch reader — but comes unencumbered by ads. Weak spots: B&N doesn't have its own multimedia offerings, so people may look to other devices for similar Netflix and Hulu experiences. The Nook Cloud service doesn't do what Apple and Amazon cloud services do, such as back up personal files, or store your personal music collection. And while the Nook Tablet's $50 stepup in price sure seems justified, there's a chance it will turn off deal-hungry shoppers. They could select the existing Nook Colour, which now costs $199, but that's just confusing, and is apt to under-deliver on some experiences, even when its major update arrives in December.
Amazon:
W
e're pretty gung-ho about the Kindle Fire tablet, since the
Conclusion: Some people prefer the lighter weight and smaller 7-inch screens on the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire, in part because they're better for reading books and watching movies by yourself. And let's face it, the iPad is $500 — baseline. Until it's $399, or even $299, it's not going to reach the greatest number of people who want it, even if its merits are abundantly clear. PS: The Apple iPad is available in India and the Nook and Kindle aren't. Unless you have an uncle in USA to get it for you, iPad seems to be a more sensible decision. Alas! Had it only been a few hundred dollars cheaper.
Weak spots: Barnes & Noble derided the Kindle Fire for being underpowered, and the e-ink tablets for being cheap only because they show ads when you're not reading. Both of these could factor into people making holiday buying decisions, along with the fact that Amazon has no in-person support programme, while both B&N and Apple do.
$199 price point and Amazon's ecosystem of books, movies and music are a compelling pitch. And let's not forget that Amazon is the dominant player in the e-book world, and the focal point of impulse buying during the holiday season. Selling points: Not only does Amazon have a pretty devoted audience already, it is working hard to lock them in tight. Amazon Prime, for $80 per year, not only gives people ‘free’ two-day shipping, but streaming TV and movies, a la Netflix. The company just announced that the membership would also include a lending library of recently released books, available
Apple:
A
lmost anything you can do on a Kindle Fire or a Nook Tablet, you can do on an iPad, with a screen that's twice the square inches. Even if the iPad isn't a direct competitor, it's safe to say it will lure many bigger spenders away from the reader-focused tablets. Selling points: Besides the Apple halo of design, quality and service, and the evolving iTunes/iCloud ecosystem, the iPad really is a more grown-up product. It's got cameras that devel-
opers are using in many ways beyond just video conferencing. It has apps that do real work, from word processing to video editing. And it has Netflix and Hulu Plus for video, not to mention B&N Nook and Amazon Kindle e-reader apps. They don't do everything, but they serve the majority of needs. And they're likely not going away. Weak spots: Both B&N and Amazon are aware of Apple's threat, so having a Nook or Kindle app for iPad doesn't guarantee full service. Many of the Nook magazine and kids' book features are not available anywhere but on the Nook Tablet and Nook Color, and Amazon's Prime lending library is exclusive to Kindles, both the Fire and all of the e-ink versions. Apple has its own iBooks service, but the very existence of other options from major booksellers renders it all but moot.

Ranbir Kapoor does a commendable, and convincing job of being a rockstar. idya Balan’s sexy avatar, itsy bitsy clothes, cleavage-showing blouses and raunchy dance numbers in The Dirty Picture are receiving jaw-dropping reactions. Fans and trade pundits say the masala movie is expected to beat the musical treat Rockstar, the fun-filled Desi Boyz and the action thriller Don 2. Directed by Milan Luthria, The Dirty Picture is said to be the tragic tale of a southern sex symbol’s rise and fall and Vidya is playing the voluptuous woman who was loved and desired in the 1980s and 1990s. Leaving behind the grace and charm she showed in her first film Parineeta and then again in films like Paa and No One Killed Jessica, Vidya has done everything — from wearing garish clothes to showing flesh to making provocative dance moves — to make her character believable. In fact, she has surpassed her own portrayal of a sexually charged woman in Ishiqya. When launched, the film grabbed attention as it was touted as a biopic on southern sex symbol Silk Smitha who had committed suicide in 1996. But recently when the late actress’ brother objected and filed a complaint against the content of the film, the makers said it’s not based on anyone’s life. Vidya
pulled out all stops at the music launch of the movie when she gave an adrenaline pumping performance along with co-star Naseeruddin Shah. Criticism and complaints notwithstanding, the trade pundits forecast that amidst the four big releases — the Vidya starrer, will take the cake when it hits the screen on December 2. TN Kapoor, of Bharti Film Distributors in Indore, said, “The Dirty Picture is likely to do good business as it has got mass appeal. Vidya’s already generated a lot of buzz with the way she is presenting herself in the film.” But Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan, said, “I feel The Dirty Picture will work more than other films as it has appeal for both mass and class. The Dirty Picture will not only work in the metros but it is likely to work in B and C class cities like Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Bareilly among others.” IANS

That’s what I’d do. I’d go on every ride and let them experience that. When daddy normally walks through Disneyland with them, things get weird,” a website quoted Depp as IANS saying.

Notwithstanding the stunning visual effects, the latest adventure of Tintin fails to impress Padmini C padmini.c@postnoon.com

Movie Cast
: Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn : Andy Serkis, Cary Elwes, Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell, Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Toby Jones Director: Steven Spielberg Rating:
daptations are at best a risky bet. Especially if they happen to be of books that have been of popular favourites. The comics genre is considered relatively safe considering that DC and Marvel adaptations have unfailingly ended up as cult classics. The lucky streak however, seems to have run out when it comes to other popular comic strips, be it Asterix and Obelix, Garfield and Dennis the Menace among others. The latest rendition of Herge’s series Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn too, appears somewhat lost in transition from paper to screen.
The adventure starts for the intrepid reporter when Tintin buys a model of the tainted ship The Unicorn. Even before he leaves the stall, he is coerced, baited and threatened to part with it. Soon enough he realises the model is one of the three keys to solving the mystery of the greatest sunken treasure in recent history. In the process of solving the mystery, with his ever faithful companion Snowy, he finds himself kidnapped aboard a ship captured by the evil mercenary Sakharine. In a race against time, Tintin must unite with Captain Haddock (the rightful heir to the treasure) and get to the Treasure before Sakharine does. In terms of performances,
Jamie Bell does a decent enough job as Tintin (looking like a young Jude Law) but Andy Serkis stands out as the maudlin Glaswegian Captain Haddock. Daniel Craig lends voice to the evil mastermind Sakharine. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the bumbling detective duo Thompson and Thompson, provide for the much-needed comic relief. The movie is entertaining in parts but lukewarm and uninspiring as a whole. The dialogue, sparsely peppered with wit, is a let down. But the dazzling visual effects are breathtaking. Coming with names like Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, it comes as a surprise but if you are a die-hard Tintin fan, you might be disappointed.
Missing the spirit Director Tarsem Singh honed his arty visual style with award-winning music videos and commercials, moving into features with The Cell and The Fall. His Immortals, however, just passes
T
arsem experiments with Greek mythology in his latest offering Immortals. The story uses themes and characters from Greek mythology in an original story about a stonemason who leads a small army against the massive, rampaging forces of Hyperion, with the fate of both humankind and the Olympian gods hanging in the balance. Mickey Rourke plays a ferocious Hyperion leads a massive army that is searching the Greecian lands to get hold of the magic bow whose explosive powers will allow him “to unleash the Titans and end the reign of gods.” Meanwhile, we have Henry Cavill, Theseus, a muscular young man who stays in his village perched atop a cliff. Initially he tries to stay out of the gory war but when Hyperion kills his mother it becomes impossible for the young blood to stay put. Armed
with education in the martial arts Theseus sets out to avenge his mother’s death. Then he meets Freida Pinto who plays Phaedra, a Virgin oracle who has visions about the dark future, soon enough the two team up and in the process the oracle finds herself being lured by the desires of the human flesh. He is also assisted by Stavros (Dorff) a rakish thief, who, like all rakish thieves, are obliged to provide comic relief. Things turn violent and the King of the Gods Zeus, just watches from above as the mortals engage in gory combat eager to finish all. Barely noticeable, the 3-D looks like an afterthought and, indeed, it is — the extra D seems like an after -thought. The gods join the fray at last, the ultimate battle unfolds rather impressively on three fronts at once. You got the divines, the semidivines and the hoi polloi,
fighting for turf that stretches from the bowels of Olympus right to the top. Known for his flashy visual style Tarsem here, is almost restrained, and since restraint is hardly what one expects in epics of such sort, it makes for a welcome change. There’s a high grandeur to it and a strange, redemptive sort of reverence. However, the climax doesn’t live up to our expectations and the biggest flaw being a weak storyline. As a result, the action seems repetitive, battle scenes futile. While the film puts across the Hellenistic penchant for guts and shield-thumping, oath-chanting glory, it doesn’t

seem to imbibe its innovations in drama or character development. Cavill makes for a dashing action star and Rourke is evil enough going on his killing spree like no tomorrow. Freida’s character the lesser
said the better, other than the naked butt scene nothing very interesting. All in all one wishes that the story in some way resembled the Greek story on which it is based at least in spirit if not authentically.

: Oh My Friend : Siddharth, Shruti Haasan, Navdeep, Hansika, Thanikella Bharani Director : Venu Sriram Rating:
A feel-good film Breezy, carefree and hits all the right notes
O
h My Friend starring Siddharth and Shruti Haasan in lead roles is full of surprises. In a way, there’s nothing outstanding about the film but you can’t help but notice the lack of chaos, which seems to be the order of the day in most Telugu films. There are hardly any fights or comedians to distract you from the main proceedings. Yet, there is something inherently good about the film.
The film narrates the story of Chandu (Siddharth) and Siri (Shruti Haasan) who believe that they are friends forever. Their friendship is mistaken for love by everyone around them but both of them are absolutely clear that they cannot be anything more than friends. Oh My Friend also focuses on Chandu’s journey as a musician and how his father reacts to his career choice makes for a good subplot. However,
It’s a boring fare It’s My Love Story lacks the fuel to go a long way
M
adhura Sreedhar’s It’s My Love Story is a film about a couple who end up in a live-in relationship. The intention to weave a sensitive story around this subject may have been good, but the narration leaves a lot to be desired. Vandana (Nikitha Narayan) convinces her parents to send her to Hyderabad as she aspires to become a fashion designer. She meets Arjun (Arvind Krishna), a game designer and sparks fly between the two. However, they don’t realise that their budding relationship will not go well with Vandana’s parents. Vandana’s mother comes to know about their live-in relationship and what happens after that forms the rest of the story. It’s hard to empathise with the actors in the film except for Jayasudha and Sarath Babu. There are way too many pesky characters in the film, especially actors like Vennela Kishore and Tagubothu Ramesh. What really hampers the film is its screenplay. It’s My Love Story desperately tries to be a cool film and with too many sentimental scenes in the film, the lead pair’s immaturi-
ty, despite their sincere efforts, is quite evident. The film’s second half is a tad better; however, the film’s climax is badly written. It’s as if the director found an easy exit route after all the drama to make sure the film ends on a positive note. In terms of performances, Jayasudha and Sarath Babu are the best of the lot. The film’s only silver lining is its
the film belongs to Chandu, Siri, Ritu (Hansika) and Uday (Navdeep) and the emotions they go through. One of the strengths of the film is the sparkling chemistry between Siddharth and Shruti Haasan. While Siddharth is convincing in his role, it is Shruti Haasan who is the film’s biggest revelation. She pulls off her role with great ease. Navdeep and Hansika are good in their respective roles. On the other hand, director Venu Sriram spends way too much time in establishing the conflict point in the film’s first half and things move on a slow note. The film gets better in the second half. The good thing is that Venu Sriram conveys his message clearly through his characters. The film’s music, background score and cinematography are top notch. It’s an impressive debut for the director Venu Sriram who chooses to narrate a simple story of love and friendship. Oh My Friend is a sensible film with its heart at the right place. Go watch it. KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
