he police had tried to wash their hands off the sensational affair. People had dispersed after the act, but the mobile camera had recorded every detail and now, the attackers are in a lock up. The Dabeerpura police have arrested three men who indulged in thrashing a youth and tonsuring his classmate for travelling together on a bike on Friday. The incident happened near Officer’s Mess on Malakpet Road. If the elders had not intervened and dispersed the crowd, it could have led to a flare up, say people nearby. The youth and his classmate

(a girl) were returning from college after collecting hall tickets when their bike hit a passerby on Malakpet Road. This inci-

dent drew a large crowd. Someone in the crowd asked them about their business and when said they were college

friends and were returning from college the crowd demanded to know why the burkha-clad girl was pillion-riding the bike of a boy from a different community. One thing led to another and soon the worked-up crowd thrashed the boy and tonsured the girl after abusing them of being ‘indecent.’ It was a police informer who shot the entire event and sent it to the police. “They (informers) are invaluable,” remarked a police officer. The police had earlier decided to let go of the affair as the boy and girl belong to different communities. Based on the photos and video, the Dabeerpura police inspector D Rajashekhar, identified three men, Haneef, Imran

and Kafeel of Chanchalguda and Malakpet and arrested them for assault and threatening. Fearing further attacks, the boy’s family did not want to pursue the matter but inspector Rajashekhar felt that the uniform’s credibility will be eroded if they don’t book a case as people, especially the informers, would think the police is of no use. Relatives of Haneef staged a dharna before the Dabeerpura police station alleging torture in custody. Assistant commissioner of police M Kistaiah told Postnoon that there was nothing improper in police action, “We are doing our job.” Kistaiah admitted that if it was not for the informants, the incident would have gone unnoticed.

THINGS WE LEARNED TODAY

The column that teaches everyone something new about the way the City functions.

1

Is right always right and left always wrong? Through the years, many children have been taught that using their left hand for daily chores is wrong. The lefties on the other hand consider themselves to be part of a privileged club.

2

Sometimes technology can be a great boon. A police informer had recorded the recent incident where a boy and girl were beaten up, that led to the arrest of the accused.

3

Safety measures lacking in sprawling City constructions. Many new buildings are coming up in the City but safety measures for workers and surrounding homes seem to be ignored.

4

Government intervention needed in Assam. With the deepening civil crisis, NGOs from the City who visited the state, feel that their assistance will not be enough.

Construction work gives residents sleepless nights A building being demolished in Shyam Lal Colony in Begumpet is sproving to be a matter of concern for the residents around the site. M ANIL KUMAR

‘B

etter safe than sorry’ is a popular adage. But it looks like the GHMC follows it the other way around. One of the plots in Shyam Lal Colony, Begumpet is being demolished and reconstructed. This work is not being done in a legitimate manner and is causing inconvenience to the residents. The house which is being demolished lies between Bhandari apartments and Surya mansion. These apartments are built on a slope and during the process of demolishing the existing building, the workers broke down the boundaries of the neighbouring buildings too. The builders did not build or lay any protection until one of the workers fell into the pit two days back. The pit, which is at the boundary of both the buildings has been broken down by the workers. “He fell into the pit and was rushed to the hospital,” said Raj, watchman of Bhandari residency. Breaking of boundaries is not the only problem. The construction work is being carried out even at night. According to the police department, carrying out construction work during the night is illegal. Despite this, the work in Shyam Lal colony is undertaken even in the night. “I can’t keep my windows open as there is so much dust and they work round the clock. Despite complaining, they say that this is how it’s going to be for some time. They refuse to stop which in turn gives us

sleepless nights,” fumes a esident. Residents have approached the GHMC and police department but all in vain. Also the constant risk of falling in the pit is troubling them. Suvarna U, a media professional complains, “First of all they are causing a nuisance by working during the night. Secondly, they have demolished the old buildings in such a way that our boundaries have also been broken. So many children play here. Imagine what would happen if a child falls into this pit, or the dangers that a car reversing from that area could face.” She further says that nei-

ther the police or the GHMC does anything. “There should be a regulating body to inspect the work,” she adds. When Postnoon contacted the police department, Surya Narayana, ACP of the area said, “If the construction work is going on in the night, we can stop but breaking the neighbours boundary walls is an offence. We cannot do anything till we get court orders.” In the last one year there have been several issues in Begumpet. Perhaps the GHMC need to draw its attention to this colony which was once their pride.

Jaipal gearing up for CM role? Union minister Jaipal Reddy, who hails from Telangana, is splashing in State politics with the aim of wresting leadership from current CM Kiran Kumar Reddy. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

I

f we read meaning into the high decibel protests against the petroleum minister S Jaipal Reddy for his gas allocation to Maharashtra, we see a haze of fear in the current dispensation of the State. It’s the fear of a midstream change of guard. The Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy led the protests and dashed to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister and get it corrected. But the chorus of protests was so strong against Reddy that one saw a design in the move. The protest took a political turn when the TRS came in support of the ‘Telangana leader” saying he did nothing wrong. Reddy who was obliquely blamed by the present Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy on the gas allocation issue, had reacted sharply to the statement of the CM. Utilising the occasion the union minister had said that he had done a lot for the State, and yet he was not claiming the credit owing to his position as central minister. He also participated in felicitation programme organised by Backward Class community leaders in his honour at Ravindra Bharathi. Addressing the gathering after his felicitation, Jaipal Reddy had promised the BCs that he would work hard to ensure the

setting up of separate ministry for BCs at the center and strive to include more number of castes in OBC list of the center. The public promise by the union minister indicates that he is prepared for a bigger role. Reddy did not stop here. Last week, he extended open support to the agitation launched by Dalit Christians in New Delhi demanding the union government to take steps to provide reservations to all Dalit Christians. This move of the minister had not only surprised many opposition party leaders but also shocked many of his

JAIPAL ACCEPTED IN PARTY

In a significant development, Union minister Jaipal Reddy has found instant acceptance from the party leaders of three regions — Telangana, Andhra and Rayalaseema — in the State. Commenting on the reports of Jaipal Reddy becoming the CM, senior congress leader from Telangana region Vakulabaranam Krishna Mohan Rao said that anybody can become the chief minister in Congress if he has the blessings

of our president Sonia Gandhi. “Kiran Kumar Reddy became CM as he had the blessings of Sonia Gandhi. In a similar manner anybody can become the CM if our president has the confidence in him,” he said. Commenting on Jaipal Reddy’s candidature for CM’s post Rao said that the union minister can serve the public in a great manner. “Jaipal Reddy had championed the cause of weaker sections particularly Other Backward Caste community. His unflinching fight for implementation of historic Mandal commission recommendations brought him the name of Mandalite during VP Singh’s government. He fought for weaker sections rights despite being an I &PR Minister then,” Rao added. APCC spokesperson N Tulasi Reddy described Jaipal Reddy as great statesman. “Jaipal Reddy does need any introduction. He won the best Parliamentarian long back. This award itself is a symbol of his capabilities as a leader,” he said. Party general secretary from Andhra region T Venkata Ratnam also expressed similar views and said nobody would oppose Jaipal Reddy’s candidature irrespective of strong regional feelings. “If the party high command decides to make him the CM, all party leaders should accept it irrespective of their personal and regional feelings,” she said.

nimals usually receive a raw deal, especially beasts of burden. On Sunday, a foal lay critically ill on the main road at Kattedan near Rajendra Nagar. Its distressed mother stood watch over it, but nobody came forward to help. The horse, abandoned by its owner, lay on the road for over an hour even as commuters simply passed by turning a blind eye to its distress. NGOs like the Blue Cross usually rescue such animals based on calls from passersby. But nobody called the agency’s emergency number either. In case of animals, which have been abandoned by their owners, requiring medical attention or rescue, the Blue Cross can be contacted at (040) 32989858/23545523 between 9 am and 5 pm.

ASSAM STRIFE

Kokrajhar, the ‘worst human tragedy’ of Independent India 4.6 lakh people have been rendered homeless in Assam’s ethnic strife, reminiscent of the gory tales during Partition. NGO members from Hyderabad speak of their experience there. M ANIL KUMAR

Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com

“U

nless the bands of armed berserk men are disarmed, peace cannot be restored in Assam,” exclaims a member of a team from the City, who took the challenging task of studying the ‘worst human tragedy of Independent India’. Some 4.6 lash people have been rendered homeless in Assam’s ethnic strife, reminiscent of the gory tales during Partition. People driven out of their villages are now sheltering in 120 refugee camps, which support between 1,000 and 25,000 each. Four districts in the largest north-eastern state have completely shut down, prompting a shift in demographic. The two-member team of Help Hyderabad, an NGO, that toured extensively the four troubled districts called Bodoland, said, “If the Centre does not intervene, this humanitarian crisis might become worse. As people in most of these camps are suffering from dysentery, typhoid and viral fever, the death rate would increase and reach uncontrollable levels,” warns Khalid Rasool Khan, founder-member of the NGO. Even though several NGOs are supporting the displaced, the help is meagre. Now with the government announcing closure of these camps before August 15, no one knows where these women and children will go, as most of their homes have been gutted or bulldozed. Moreover, each house in the neighbouring

villages is also accommodating two to three families on humanitarian grounds, but it is exhausting for the people sheltering the homeless. In 1996, ethnic violence left 3,000 adivasis dead in a single night and 20,000 homeless, most of whom continue to live in camps till date. It is said that the attacks by Bodos on adivasis on that day completely changed the way adivasis were living. Now, adivasis have their own militias, completely armed to the teeth. “Similar would be the consequences, with Muslims arming themselves against the Bodos to protect themselves if the government fails to restore their confi-

dence,” points out Zahid Qadri, another founder-member who accompanied Khan. They added that if the Congress government, both in the state and at the Centre, keeps quiet, it may set a dangerous precedent in India. Identity politics will prompt swift solution to ethnic cleansing elsewhere. “Already there are several regions in India striving for statehood. What if the frustrated Telanganites resort to such measures to get a separate state?” asks Qadri. According to the team, the state Congress was playing into the hands of Bodos who are fighting for autonomy. If the 11

Bodo MLAs withdraw their support, the Tarun Gogoi government may fall. It is one of the reasons that the affected people have lost trust in the government and state’s police. The Centre, with the help of paramilitary forces, should restore trust of the people before it is too late, points out the team. Bodoland of four districts consists of 29 per cent Bodos, 35 per cent Muslims (mostly Bengali-speaking, living there prior to Independence), 25 per cent adivasis and the remaining population consists of Ranbhansis. The team’s tour lasted six days. They visited 10 camps, eight offering shelter to Muslims and two for displaced Bodos (4 lakh Muslims and 60 Bodos are sheltering in camps). While travelling 500 kilometers, they were provided security by deputy commissioner of Kokrajhar district, Vinod Seshan. “Two truckloads of relief material was procured from Alipurdwar in West Bengal, including utensils, mosquito nets, tarpaulin, and baby food. `10 lakh was spent on these two truck loads,” notes the team. Help Hyderabad NGO includes ex-army officers and several noted women as founder members. Immediately after Eidul-Fitr, the team will be leaving for Assam via New Delhi, where they plan to meet leaders as part of efforts to solve the grave problem the nation is currently facing. People who wish to contribute to the relief efforts can visit the NGO’s website, www.helphyderabad.org. Zakat can also be offered. These donations are exempted from income tax.

He also urged the Centre to release adequate funds for rehabilitation and set up medical camps to provide assistance to victims.

andamuri Balakrishna met his brother-inlaw and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday. The two were closeted in a oneon-one meeting for over an hour. As this was their first meeting after Balakrishna announced his intention to plunge into active politics, it generated a lot of interest. It is learnt that they discussed a suitable position for Balakrishna. The two also discussed TDP’s recent BC declaration.

elangana Auto Drivers’ JAC convener Mohd Amanullah Khan demanded the State suspend West Zone RTO Manik Prabhu for “failing to release an auto since the last two years” or the union would lay siege to the RTA. Khan said RTA officials conducted searches in June 2010, seized an auto and dumped it at the RTA office. Even after documents were produced, the West Zone RTA has yet to release the auto.

Raghavulu warned that they would intensify agitation if the government fails to implement recommendations of the SC and ST sub-committee by August 15. hen a chess master invites over a dozen children to play against him, there is always a certain level of interest and expectation. And the standards are raised higher when he also happens to be the CEO and Founder of Pegasystems Inc, an American BPM company. After an exciting 1 vs 17 match tournament, Postnoon caught up with Alan Trefler to talk about chess, children, Gary Kasparov and other significant things. As someone who has been playing chess for over a decade, how would you define it? Chess is a game that demands one to think and plan ahead. It is literally like placing a hurricane over the opponent’s king. But while that may be the sensational bit, it also teaches one to learn how to lose. Having taught computers how to play chess, what was the entire experience like? Well, we were exploring the many million possibilities, the various permutations and combinations and the probability of error while teaching computers chess. Writing algorithms has taught me and helped me discover a lot about chess through this teaching. How would you react to playing in chess tournaments where the organisers would ask you to bring your own chess sets and timers? Or that the classical

n Alan’s interest in computers and expert systems originates from collegiate involvement in tournament chess, during which time he achieved a Master rating and was cochampion of the 1975 World Open Chess Championship.

game format is discouraged in favour of blitz games? I would be really surprised considering that this game requires no great capital. Or is not expensive. So while I may not be really informed about the situation here in the City, I definitely think there is a lot more scope to this game in this City and country considering that the game originated here and an Indian holds the world championship. As to the format of the game, I myself enjoy blitz games much more than the standard 90

minute classical games. It teaches the younger players a lot about error, but yes, classical games should not be discouraged. How well did you think Vishwanathan Anand fared in the recent championship against Gelfand? Anand is a spectacular player. I did manage to catch a few matches and he was his usual best. However, I would have enjoyed Anand being pitted against Magnus Carlsen. Have you ever played in India? Three and a half years ago I

had played with 25 people in India. The tournament had a mix of steady defensive and also aggressive players, it was quite a challenge. At one point I was losing in six matches. And then, some of the players decided to group up, in a friendly manner, and go against me, and then I had won 24 matches and drew 1 match. Who is your favourite player? Gary Kasparov, undoubtedly. He is just like the game he plays, intense. He is a friend of mine and I respect his fervour.

n In the open section of the 1975 World Open chess tournament, played in New York, expert Alan Trefler (Elo rating 2075, 125 points below the lowest master rating), and ranked 115th in the tournament, scores 8-1 to tie for first with International Grandmaster Pal Benko, rated 2504, ahead of Grandmasters Nicolas Rossolimo and Walter Browne. n Alan and his wife Pamela also established The Trefler Foundation in 1995 with a mission to improve educational opportunities for Boston’s urban youth. They donated $1 million to Dorchester High School to improve the school.

INTERNATIONAL LEFT-HANDERS’ DAY

M ANIL KUMAR

AGE OF THE SOUTHPAW Evil, geniuses or simply misunderstood? On International Left-Handers’ Day, Postnoon decodes the myths and fears that surrounds southpaws.

PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com

B

ias against left is as old as civilisation. Perpetuated by many myths and irrational fears, the left-handed have suffered a historical wrong. In the Stone Age, we learn, there existed no prejudice because tools were used with both hands. But the medieval age onwards, associating common or evil with left became strong. In India even today, left step or left hand is not considered auspicious. A Hindu bride is asked to step into her hubby’s home with the right foot first. Left hand is not used for offering pooja. And the Indian system of cleaning after toilet has further perpetuated this prejudice against the left hand as Indians use hands rather than spoon and fork for eating. Christianity too is strongly pro-right hand. It is the right hand that gives the blessing and makes the sign of the cross. The sheep are set on Christ’s right hand and the goats on the left. Those on the right inherit the

kingdom of god, while those on the left depart into everlasting fire. The devil is nearly always portrayed as left-handed. Kids born as lefties face many obstacles though the situation is changing for the good. What causes someone to become a southpaw? Scientists aren’t sure, but research points to a complex collaboration between genes and environment. Research says it is all in the brain. The brain is “cross-wired” so that the left hemisphere controls the right handed side of the body and vice-versa and hand dominance is connected with brain dominance on the opposite side. If bias against the lefty is baseless, lefty's superiority too is a myth. Only, researchers say they found a higher percentage of lefthanded people in creative areas such as music, art and writing. Again, it’s wrong to generalise. One thing goes in favour of the southpaw, though. There aren't many notorious left-handed criminals, at least killers. Chairman Mao’s dictum is relevant here: No matter what the colour of the cat is as long as it catches mouse.

f it wasn’t for my grandma, I’d be in the league of the greats. When I came into the world via a sleepy little town in AP, I was a curious kid to my parents, because I was a lefty. I ate, drank, drew and threw with my left hand. My grandmother was crestfallen. No one in her family was left-handed. It seemed to singlehandedly signify all the things in my brain that were wired wrong. It just wouldn’t do. Who will want a wife/daughter-in-law who eats with her left hand, she quizzed my harried mother. So it was decided. I must convert. My mum dreamed that I would become ambidextrous. In reality, I was just ambi-confused. At any point, there was only a set of things I could do with either

hand. I could write with my left, but had to eat with my right. I could catch a ball with my left. But throw with my right. I could snap my fingers with right. But sign only with my left. You get the idea. I was caught in the ‘birth vs. brought up’ conundrum. It went on until third grade when my cursive hand-writing teacher looked at my scribbles and finally put an end to it. Decide. Choose one hand. And write with that, she demanded. So, I chose the right track that world approves.

he electronics industry in the State shows a growth of 13 per cent, compared to the national growth rate of 18 per cent. The Rs6,000crore industry employs 60,000 people from different education levels (matriculation pass outs to engineering graduates). However, there are many challenges to the industry in reaching its fullest potential in the State. Availability of quality human resource is the major challenge for the electronics industry. The curriculum of ITI and polytechnic courses are more practical oriented compared to engineering courses. The Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) impart practical knowledge and updated their curriculum based on latest technologies in the industry. There is also a need for setting up a curriculum for polytechnic practical training (internships) to make the student understand industrial environment, safety and ISO norms and regulations. Although, recent government policies encourage skill-development programmes, there is also a need to train teachers of engineering and other technical courses by IITians, who are far ahead in terms of technical and R&D knowledge, views D Venkat Rao, admi-

nistrative officer, Electronic Industries Association of AP (ELIAP). “The government initiatives are very slow in promoting support industries like mould manufacturers, LCD manufacturers and metals and alloys development. The peripheral industry is not treated as same as the electronic industry because the products of these industries can be used in multiple segments. There is a need for change in policies for the growth of peripheral industries and their importance in making quality electronic

products,” he said. “The concept of SEZs should not only be aimed at MNCs alo-

ne; it would be helpful to SMEs in the State too. Exports can only be increased by providing solutions to the present constraints of the industry like technology, finance and marketing. It is very important to understand that there is exponential growth in imports of electronic products, which even cross the petroleum imports. There is an immediate need to create facilities to enable the growth of the industry and attract MNCs to start operations in the country and promote brand India across the world,” said Rao. “Almost 48 industries from the State are ready to set up new industries but do not have sufficient land. However, government is also considering a new policy, which is currently in the draft stage to spend Rs50 crore on each electronic hardware cluster. This will not only support R&D in the area, but also provide common facilities for small companies that could not afford them individually,” he said. Talking about the new hardware policy by the AP government, he said the government should also keeping existing industries in mind to create conducive industrial environment rather than simply making policies attractive to new companies. “Some states give capital equipment subsidies apart from VAT benefits,” Rao added.

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The lone Indian face

Kathak exponent Aditi Mangaldas will be the lone face of classical Indian arts at the Edinburgh International Festival with a 105minute combination of traditional Kathak and contemporary dance.

NEW DELHI: Kathak exponent Aditi Mangaldas will be the lone face of classical Indian arts at the Edinburgh International Festival with a 105-minute combination of traditional Kathak and contemporary dance. Mangaldas will lead a troupe of nine dancers from her Drishtikone Repertory, to perform “Uncharted Seas” and a contemporary composition, “Timeless”, August 18 to August 19 at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. The festival, which opened August 9, will conclude September 2. Last year, India was represented at the festival by Nrityagram, the gurukul-style centre for classical Indian dance. “‘Uncharted Seas’ is about the search of identity - basically who we are through the heart of classical Kathak. The dancers weave in and out of shadows with rhythm. The essence of the

choreography is the quest for the intangible, for god, truth, beauty, love and freedom,” Mangaldas told IANS at her residence-cumstudio at Sainik Farms before leaving for Edinburgh. “Timeless”, a contemporary Kathak choreography in combination with several ethnic dances, is a set of questions that people often ask themselves about the cycle of time; “whether we can hold past time, future time in time present”, Mangaldas said. The experimental music for the works have been composed by Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan. And a selection of poetry from the compositions of Josh Malihabadi, Jalauddin Rumi and Kabir will form the vocal context for the “Uncharted Seas”. The acts have a cross-over colour despite their Indian essence. The lighting for “Timeless”

has been designed by an Italian Fabiana Piccioli and by Dutch designer Sanders Loonen for “Uncharted Seas”. The costumes for “Timeless” have been designed by a Japanese, Kimie Nakano, the dancer said. “All the three have worked with (London-based) Akram Khan, who is described as one of the top choreographers in the world today. Khan has his roots in classical Kathak,” Mangaldas said. “It has been wonderful to do this exchange,” the danseuse added. “I am really keen to see contemporary works from India because there is a huge space out there for all genres of contemporary dances from various roots.” Mangaldas said. The dancer defines Indian contemporary dance as an “individual set of movements developed by a dancer”. It incorpo-

rates from various indigenous genres and yet has an idiom of its own. “Europe is opening up to Indian dances. The UK has amazing Kathak dancers. Various Indian gurus have visited the country and created their followings. I have been there thrice to conduct Kathak workshops,” she said. Mangaldas with her troupe was shortlisted two years ago together with Nrityagram (set up in the outskirts of Bangalore by Gerard D’ Cunha) — when the artistic director of Edinburg International Festival Jonathan Mills came to India to check out Indian dance repertoires to participate in the festival. India has earlier been represented at the Edinburgh International by dancers like Birju Maharaj, Raja Reddy and Malavika Sarukkai. IANS

World Sexual abuse in US Army is YouTube series’ focus

SAN DIEGO: The enormous obstacles and emotional torment that a female solider confronts in reporting a sexual assault in the military are the focus of the three-part Web series "Lauren" debuting today on YouTube's new channel WIGS, which focuses on drama for women. Featuring "Flashdance" star Jennifer Beals and Troian Bellisario, "Lauren" gives a closeup look at the challenges women service members face in trying to find justice after being raped. It's a problem that military leaders have given unprecedented attention to this year. The Defense Department has estimated that 86 per cent of sexual assaults go unreported, an indication that some women are worried about the effect reporting an assault may have on their career and that they mistrust the military prosecution system. Nearly 3,200 sexual assaults were reported in the military last year. Military leaders say sexual assault is not only dehumanising to the victims but threatens operational readiness. The Pentagon has set up hotlines and has been trying to encourage service members to help victims. High-ranking Navy leaders have likened their campaign to the crusade years ago to stop rampant drug abuse, although activists say sweeping institutional changes are needed for victims to find justice. Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, "Lauren" sets out to show viewers how unfair and unsympathetic the military can be toward the abuse of female soldiers. It also depicts the turmoil of many of the victims who have a deep love and respect for the military but often feel betrayed after coming forward.

It has been a scorcher of a summer even by Israeli standards, with temperatures settling near 116 degrees Fahrenheit for much of the last month. But among the general hangdog reactions, Israeli vintners are quietly whispering joyfully about what might be a blow out year. An unusually long and cold winter followed by a summer with peaks of heat could be just what the winemaker ordered. “The year shows a lot of promise,” says Tal Pelter, owner and winemaker of Pelter Winery, a highly regarded boutique winery. Nowhere is this more true than in the Golan Heights, a contentious 700 square mile area that normally stands out as the site of IsraeliSyrian skirmishes. But with an average elevation of 3,300 feet, volcanic, rocky earth, gentle hills and cool evening breezes, the Golan turns out to be better land for winemaking than for warmongering. In Israel, life under fire isn’t always so bad. Ancient people may have known this. The Golan has been inhabited since the Lower Paleolithic era. In 1972, a visiting American professor of oenology sifted some of the dark, aerated soil and announced that it was auspicious for grape growing. Eight local collective farms took his advice seriously. Grapevines were first planted on the Golan plateau in 1976, yielding wine in 1984, released by the then-revolutionary Golan Heights Winery. Since then, wine has become a local way of life and over a dozen of the most highly regarded wineries in Israeli-held territory are located on the Golan Heights. No less a mandarin than Robert Parker, the owner of Wine Advocate, has given his imprimatur. GLOBAL POST

THE FALLEN ANGEL HARD TALK

G

reater the height bigger the impact of the fall. It’s a law of physics. Suspension of CNN host and Time columnist Fareed Zakaria for plagiarism has not surprised his critics, but to us, the practising journalists, it came as a grim reminder of today’s razzmatazz media world where information bombardment happens with dazzling speed and everybody tries to take to a short route because time is in short supply. Fareed, a Mumbai-born and foreign-bred professional, had a meteoric rise in the profession. So envious was his growth that he had lately begun to advise President Barack Obama on foreign policy. Zakaria has won several awards for his columns and cover essays in particular for his October 2001 Newsweek cover story, “Why They Hate Us.” In 1999, he was named “one of the 21 most important people of the 21st Century” by Esquire magazine. In 2007, he was named one of the “top 100 public intellectuals” by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines. He has received honorary degrees from many universities. He serves on the board of Yale University, The Council on Foreign Relations, The Trilateral Commission, and Shakespeare and Company. The scandal that led to his ouster involves copying matter

from New Yorker on gun licensing. One long paragraph of historical perspective of gun licensing in America written by Jill Lepore was seen reproduced with a few words altered. In his apology Fareed said, “Media reporters have pointed out that paragraphs in my Time column this week bear close similarities to paragraphs in Jill Lepore’s essay in the April 23rd issue of The New Yorker. They are right. I made a terrible mistake. It is a serious lapse and one that is entirely my fault. I apologize unreservedly to her, to my editors at Time, and to my readers.” Not just Time, he repeated the same in a CNN blog. Hence a sack from CNN too.

FLY IN TROPOSPHERE Appointing him as the Editor-at-large of Time (Only the mighty Time could think of such ticklish tag) in October 2010, its Managing Editor Richard Stengel had called him, “one of the world’s most agenda setting thinkers.” And, preening himself he condescendingly declared, “Most journalists ask the ‘what’ question very well. My training is to ask the ‘why.’ That is what exactly now people are asking ‘why steal?’ Why I said his fall from grace was not surprising is because Fareed had been accused before too on many occasions for lifting materials from other authors without attribution. In his cover story in Time in 2009 on Iran he had written, “In an interview last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the Iranian regime as a ‘mes-

But, while the US media are alert and allow little leeway to stealers what about the rest of the world? Are we saints? Indeed, Internet is full of plagiarism but it being an ocean and waves moving in every moment nobody has time to see it or rectify it.

MODERN BANE OF JOURNALISM

Fareed, a Mumbaiborn and foreign-bred professional, had a meteoric rise in the profession. So envious was his growth that he had lately begun to advise President Barack Obama on foreign policy. sianic apocalyptic cult.” Atlantic Columnist Jeffrey Goldberg blasted him, “interview with whom, exactly? It was an interview by Yours Truly for the Atlantic. And it was not ‘last week’, it was almost three months ago, Jeffrey wrote. Interestingly, the New Yorker itself was recently involved in a scandal after one of its new hires, popular science writer Jonah Lehrer, “self-plagiarised” from some of his own earlier columns. The list of ‘disgraced’ journalist is indeed long in the US. Even Pulitzer Prize too had once gone to a fictional report.

Copy-paste journalism is facilitated by technology. The Net, the fenceless frontier, provides easy access to not just today’s happenings but the happenings of the past. It’s human tendency to go by short cut if one can help it. But it all throws up a challenge at the gatekeepers. What an honest editor is supposed to do in today’s journalism? Is it possible for even the one whose antenna is always up to check all sources of material? While technology-impelled stealing of ideas would continue, there are three good lessons for the current journalists from all these scandals. n Think, if you want original ideas--use search engines only for references n Do not take readers for granted, they often know more than the writer does n Be ready to put in a bit of hard work. Old world journalism had one distinct plus point— each writer had to slog, as Google was not born. Rare were chances to plagiarise. n Don’t bite more than you can chew. Too much and too many can’t be handled (Fareed knows now). The result will be fiction and plagiarism, not journalism.

itt Romney can be proud about picking Paul Ryan as his running mate. About a month ago, everything was going wrong for Romney. People booed him, his foreign trip was a disaster (things were so bad that certain media houses listed out his gaffes in London and called him ‘Mitt the Twit’ Romney), and most of all the row that erupted over his role in Bain Capital and the lay-off of many people from that company. Getting Ryan to stand by him has done him tons of good. The fervor in the Republican camp is up ever since the announcement was made. Till date, Barack Obama seemed miles ahead of Romney. Now even Obama has been forced to take notice of this latest development. Obama has bid welcome to Ryan to the election race, which hints that Obama sees a worthy opponent in Ryan, who he called the ideological leader of Republicans in Congress. Obama may have seen that the real battle may be between him and Romney’s running mate instead of being the other way around.

Cracking the radio code Jyothi Srinivas with her workshop on radio jockeying intends to break all myths surrounding this field. AMY ROSE THOMAS amyrose.t@postnoon.com

fter making her mark as a TV anchor and later as a programming head of a leading radio station in the city, Jyothi Srinivas is all set to don a new hat — that of a trainer. She will be conducting a two-day workshop for youngsters on radio jockeying at Sarathi Studios, Ameerpet. “I will be covering the basics of being a radio jockey. There are many myths surrounding this profession which I would like to bust through this workshop. People usually think that one can become a successful RJ only if he/she has a good voice and looks good. This is not true since most of the popular RJs in the country do not necessarily have these qualities. You can be a good RJ if you have that ‘X’ factor but with practice one can easily acquire this trait,” she says. According to Jyothi, an RJ gets instant recognition and has a greater chance of making a connection with the audience than a television anchor. “Unlike in television where the focus is given to the programmes, in radio, the RJ is the hero of the show. For instance,

in radio, the title of the show will have an RJ’s name in it. Apart from this, an RJ gets paid much more than a TV anchor. And unlike what most people think, there is no age-limit for becoming an RJ. There is no hard and fast rule that only youngsters can become successful RJs. There is market for people of all ages provided they are spontaneous,” she says. She feels that it is more challenging to be an RJ than a television anchor. “It is much more tougher to be a successful radio jockey since most of the time it is telecast live and you have to think on your feet. a mistake on television, you can make it up with your body language but you cannot do so when you are in radio because the audience only gets to hear your voice,” she says. Jyothi feels that unlike radio, television overly dramatises topics to gain eyeballs. “In television, one has to exaggerate situations but this is not the case here. RJs are supposed to be more natural and neutral when it comes to reporting current happenings,” she says. Having worked in both mediums, which field does she see herself working five years from now? “I have always

wanted to direct a film from the time I could remember. So that is the next thing on my list. I am working on a script currently and would be narrowing on the actors soon,” she says. Media has seen very few women making it big. So, what helped her crack this code? “Women who were part of the field were looked down upon. And moreover, the job comes with a lot of burdens like late nights and working on weekends. I feel that a person can make it big in this field only if she has the support from her family. I was lucky to have a good support system,” she signs off.

eera was worried, her 8-year daughter was complaining of a severe abdominal pain. The doctors were surprised and could not find a cause. Finally, after numerous tests and discussions the doctors were able to find a name, abdominal migraine. Many would be surprised to hear the name abdominal migraine as a migraine is generally associated with a headache. Abdominal migraine is said to be common among children but is rarely seen among adults. In spite of being common it is usually very difficult to diagnose. According to Dr Sharmila Asthana, paediatrician, Apollo Hospital, “Abdominal migraine exists in around two per cent children and occurs in children above the age of five only.” This kind of migraine has rarely been seen in adults although many adult suffers of migraine have complained about stomach pain. Abdominal migraine refers to a severe stomach pain that is not caused due to the regular stomach ailments.

CAUSE AND SYMPTOMS Not much is known about abdominal migraine. According to Dr Sharmila, “The exact cause of abdominal migraine is not known, although certain theories state that it could be due to a chemical imbalance. The two

Certain medications are available to treat abdominal migraine although due to the absence of adequate knowledge about the ailment, specific treatments are not available. Dr Sharmila says, “Certain medicines such as propranolol which although are not usually prescribed for a migraine have in certain cases proven to be affective. Patients suffering from abdominal migraine do not respond to regular pain medicines. “In most cases, it is best to avoid high doses of medication in children. Instead parents should stick to giving their children natural food, adequate amount of water and avoiding packaged food. It is often seen that children who had abdominal migraine grow up to have adult migraine. The cause for this too is rather unknown.”

ASPRIN AND CANCER

AILMENT

Daily aspirin can decrease cancer risk Researchers warned of the study’s limitations but found that those who take aspirin regularly had an eight percent decrease in cancer mortality. ALEXANDER BESANT esearchers warned of the study’s limitations in declaring aspirin a new cancer prevention method but found that those who take aspirin had an 16 per cent decrease in cancer mortality. “Although recent evidence about aspirin use and cancer is encouraging, it is still premature to recommend people start taking aspirin specifically to prevent cancer,” said study author Eric Jacobs of the American Cancer Society, reported the Petri Dish. “Decisions about aspirin use should be made by balancing the risks against the benefits in the context of each individual’s medical history.” Jacobs added that, “any decision about daily aspirin use should be made only in consultation with a healthcare professional.” The study looked at over 100,000 people that took part in the American Cancer Society’s cancer prevention study, reported the Chicago Tribune. Researchers not only found a small decrease in cancer risk in those that took the painkiller regularly but also found that it provided the same benefit to those who had done so for less than five years. Despite the positive

news, the researchers did not find daily aspirin as beneficial as a previous study last March. According to Time, a study from Oxford University found that the drug cut cancer risk by 37 per cent — a number believed to be far too high. Aspirin has already been recommended for those who are at risk of heart disease if the doctors believe that the benefits outweigh the risks. Whether official guidelines will include aspirin for cancer prevention is still up in the air awaiting further study. The new report was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Benefits of asprin for the heart n One percent of air travelers suffer from deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It’s been suggested that a low-dose aspirin taken before traveling can reduce the potential for DVT. n The National Heart Foundation reports that patients who took low-dose aspirin had a 26% reduction in the risk of a nonfatal heart attack, 25% reduction in the risk of stroke and 13% reduction in the risk of death. n A daily low-dose aspirin therapy is commonly prescribed to adults to prevent heart attack and stroke and help improve blood flow to the heart.

n Small daily doses of aspirin have proven to be effective in reducing the chances of ministrokes (in which clogged blood vessels prevent sufficient oxygen from reaching the brain). n Aspirin is also used to reduce the risk of heart attack in people with clogged coronary arteries, and in those who’ve already had an attack. n The latest advancement in aspirin involves a no-swallow tablet that dissolves through the mouth, thus reducing the risk of ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. n Aspirin may reduce the risk of

heart disease in individuals with diabetes. n Approximately 36% of the adult US population — more than 50 million people — are estimated to take aspirin regularly for heart disease prevention. n Aspirin prevents heart attacks and strokes by blocking platelets from forming blood clots. Its anti-inflammatory properties may also play a role in preventing cancer. n Studies find that aspirin taken during a heart attack reduces the risk of death by 23%. Source: www.worldwidehealth.com

HEPATITIS-A

Anti-hepatitis A effective for 10 years WASHINGTON: Anti-hepatitis A virus (HAV) shots give infants immunity for least 10 years, according to latest research. The study found that any transfer of the mother’s HAV antibodies does not lower the child’s immune response to the vaccine. HAV affects the liver and typically occurs in areas with

poor sanitation where ingestion of contaminated food or water can transmit the virus, the journal Hepatology reports. Early symptoms include fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, appetite loss, jaundice, a yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes. In the United States, HAV cases have decreased by 90 percent in the past 20 years, with

roughly 20,000 new cases reported each year, thanks to routine vaccination, according a statement of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Researchers also investigated whether maternal anti-HAV antibody transfer to children impacts the vaccine protection against HAV. The 197 infants and toddlers were broken into

three age groups. Each group was randomised by maternal anti-HAV status. HAV antibody levels were measured at one and six months, and additional follow-up took place at three, five, seven and 10 years after the second dose of vaccine. At one month following the second dose of the vaccine, children in all groups showed signs of protection from the virus.IANS

Migraines do not hurt your brain WASHINGTON: Migraines are not associated with cognitive decline, suggests new research even though previous studies have linked the disorder to increased stroke risk and structural brain lesions. Migraines affect about 20 per cent of the female population, and while these headaches are common, not much is known about this complex disease. “Previous studies on migraines and cognitive decline were small and unable to identify a link between the two,” said Pamela Rist, research fellow in preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), who led the study. “Our study was large enough to draw the conclusion that migraines, while painful, are not strongly linked to cognitive decline,” said Rist, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reports. The research team analysed data from the Women’s Health Study, a cohort of nearly 40,000 women, 45 years and older. In this study, researchers analysed data from 6,349 women who provided information about migraine status at baseline and then participated in cognitive testing during follow-up, according to a BWH statement. Participants were classified into four groups: no history of migraine, migraine with aura (unpleasant smell, seeing flashing lights), migraine without aura, and past history of migraine. Cognitive testing was carried out in two-year intervals up to three times. “Compared with women with no history of migraine, those who experienced migraine with or without aura did not have significantly different rates of cognitive decline,” said Rist. “This is an important finding for both physicians and patients. Patients with migraine and their treating doctors should be reassured that migraine may not have long-term consequences on cognitive function.” IANS

And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Joshua does it for GB RYLAND JAMES Agence France-Presse LONDON:Anthony Joshua handed Britain the perfect end to the Olympic boxing tournament on Sunday with super heavyweight gold as the hosts sealed their best Games in the ring for 104 years. The winners in the other boxing events were Ukraine’s Vasyl Lomachenko (featherweight), Cuban Robeisy Ramirez (flyweight (52kg)), Kazakhstan’s Serik Sapiyev (welterweight) and Russia’s Mekhontcev (light heavyweight). After Nicola Adams earned women’s flyweight gold on Thursday, team-mate Luke Campbell took Saturday’s bantamweight final before Joshua’s finale of a dramatic countback win over defending champion Roberto Cammarelle. As Welshman Freddie Evans lost Sunday’s welterweight final to take silver and Anthony Ogogo’s middleweight bronze, Britain enjoyed their best Olympics in the ring since the 1908

London Games when they won 14 of the 15 boxing medals. Joshua’s third gold for Britain came after some drama as he clawed back a three-point deficit going into the third to level the bout at 18-all before being awarded the contest on count-back. Italy appealed, but the decision stood after a review and only four years after taking up boxing, Joshua was crowned Olympic champion.

“That medal represents my journey and the support from the team,” said the 22year-old. “It’s much more than a gold medal, it’s a life experience.” There was some British disappointment as Welshman Evans was crushed 17-9 in the welterweight final by Serik Sapiyev. Evans, the European champion, failed to cope with Sapiyev’s impressive workrate as he worked

Croatia too strong for Italy ROBERT SMITH Agence France-Presse LONDON: Croatia won their first Olympic Games gold medal in the men’s water polo with an 8-6 win over Italy in the final on Sunday. Croatia remained unbeaten in the tournament to go one better than their silver medal at Atlanta in 1996 when they beat Italy in the semi-final. The Italians were bidding for their fourth Olympic title but after scoring the opening two goals they were outplayed by Croatia, who led 8-4 before two late consolation goals tightened the final margin. Croatia were led by Maro Jokovic with three goals and a double from Miho Boskovic, while Maurizio Felugo, chosen in the all-stars team from the London tournament, scored three times for Italy. It was a personal triumph for Croatia’s Ratko Rudic, who became the first water polo coach to win four Olympic titles, two of them with the former Yugoslavia in 1984 and 1988 and another with Italy in 1992. “The gold medal is the reward for our high level of play,” Rudic said. “We had eight wins out of eight matches. I can’t remember any Olympic tournament where the winner was so dominant.

This is a result of hard work by a team who spend days and nights analysing the opponents with great enthusiasm.” Defender Sandro Sukno said Croatia had much to be proud about overall at the London Olympics. “A nation of only four milion people has won six Olympic medals in London. Not many countries can say that,” Sukno said. Felugo said Italy’s young team would only get better for the next Olympics. “We are very pleased with silver, however there is a slight element of disappointment as we dreamed of gold,” Felugo said.

his jab throughout the three rounds and never let the Briton find his range. “I am very glad to be here, this victory is for the whole of Kazakhstan,” said Sapiyev, who added Olympic gold to the world silver medal he won last year. “I have been waiting for this moment so long. In Beijing, I lost in the quarterfinals and I was upset, but I was dreaming about the next Olympics.” Vasyl Lomachenko won a second successive Olympic gold when he added the lightweight title to the featherweight crown he captured in Beijing four years ago. Lomachenko, 24, who won the lightweight world title in Baku last year, eased to a 19-9 win over South Korea’s Han Soon-Chul. “I wouldn’t differentiate between the two medals and how much they mean to me,” said Lomachenko, comparing his London gold to his Beijing victory. “The first one I was an unknown quantity, but here I was the defending champion and was the scalp everyone wanted.

India finish on a high LONDON: The coveted gold medal eluded India at the London Games but thanks to its best-ever haul of six medals, the country finished 55th in the medal standing at the Olympics Games, that concluded here today. India, who stood 50th in the Beijing Games medal tally with one gold and two bronze, could have easily made the top-40 nations had it managed one yellow metal this time also. Grappler Sushil Kumar and shooter Vijay Kumar fetched silver medals while five-time world champion M C Mary Kom, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal, shooter Gagan Narang and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt bagged bronze medals. The medal tally was headed by the United States, who finished with a total of 104 medals, followed by China with a total of 87 medals and Britain 65 medals. PTI

US edge out Spain JIM SLATER Agence France-Presse LONDON: The United States Dream Team of NBA stars captured their second successive Olympic men’s basketball gold medal and the 14th overall for America by beating Spain 107-100 in Sunday’s final. Running unbeaten through the tournament as they did in 2008 when they also beat Spain in the final, the US multi-millionaire lineup of NBA elite claimed their fifth crown in the past six Olympics. “I’m on cloud nine. It’s such a huge honour,” US star Kobe Bryant said after his final Olympic bow. “It’s hard work and perseverance. I feel very fortunate to go to the Olympics twice and give it a go. I feel very lucky. It was nice.” The Americans improved to 62-1 since revamping the national team program after settling for Olympic bronze in 2004. “It’s a relief because if we don’t come back winners it’s a disaster,” US assistant coach

Mike D’Antoni said. But reigning European champion Spain, routed by the US NBA stars in a preOlympic exhibition game last month in Barcelona, stayed with the defending champions to the very end, keeping within reach until the final minutes.

“We didn’t want it to be easy,” US star LeBron James said. “When it gets tight, our will and determination shines.” Kevin Durant led the US stars with 30 points while James had 19 and Bryant added 17. Pau Gasol, Bryant’s NBA

Los Angeles Lakers’ teammate, led Spain with 24 points while Juan-Carlos Navarro added 21 and Rudy Fernandez contributed 14. Spain’s only Olympic medals in the event have come with finals losses to US teams in 1984, 2008 and in London. “It’s a disappointing loss,” Spanish NBA big man Gasol said. “Very proud of the way we competed. We fought. It’s disappointing on one side because we couldn’t reach the goal, because we had our chances. “We were there pretty much the entire game, but we let them get away in the fourth and we couldn’t come back.” The Americans led 8382 entering the fourth quarter and opened a 12-3 run early in the period, Chris Paul scoring the first five points while Bryant had four. Navarro hit a jumper and Fernandez added a tip-in to pull Spain within 97-91 but James answered with a slam dunk and followed a Marc Gasol dunk with a 3-pointer to put the Americans ahead 102-93 with 1:59 remaining.

CELEBRATION TIME

JOHN WEAVER Agence France-Presse LONDON: Defending men’s handball champions France were pushed all the way in a gripping Olympic final on Sunday but retained their crown, edging a tight contest to beat unfancied Sweden 22-21. After their victory in Beijing in 2008, the powerful French side went on to become the first men’s team in history to hold the Olympic, world and European titles at the same time. But Claude Onesta’s side also had something to prove after a disappointing campaign at January’s European championships in Serbia, where they had failed to reach the semifinals. “We were superb. The players were outstanding and the fans incredible. What a magnificent game, atmosphere and occasion,” said Onesta.

NEWS BRIEFS GB bask in Games glory Britain basked in the feel good factor of its most successful ever Olympics performance in a Games that it organised to widespread acclaim, but the time to capitalise on it could be short. When Mo Farah crossed the line to complete a remarkable 5,000m and 10,000m, the 80,000 crowd roared him down the home straight.

Rio full of jitters for ‘16 The snuffing out of the flame in London marked a conclusion for most, but for 2016 host city Rio de Janeiro it kicked off four years of pre-games jitters and a race against the clock to ready this laid-back city for the Games. Playing host is a high-stakes bet for any country, but Brazil seems to have more riding on the games than most.

Fight against hunger A group of Olympic athletes from around the world urged international leaders to tackle child malnutrition rates in poor countries. Olympians including Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba and British Greg Rutherford, were among athletes who wrote an open letter to Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of a so-called “hunger summit”.

Women hail Games Women made their mark on the Olympics like never before, the first Games ever to feature women in all 204 national teams and all 26 sports. The participation from conservative Islamic nations of Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar was seen as a breakthrough for the movement, while nations that have long nurtured women’s sports reaped a reward.

Future bright sans Kobe In the aftermath of their Olympic gold medal triumph, the US Dream Team of NBA stars began looking to the future, one that won’t include Kobe Bryant or coach Mike Krzyzewski. The US squad defend the crown to bring the nation its 14th all-time basketball Olympic gold medal.

Russia win fourth rhythmic gold Russia pursued their merciless dominance of rhythmic gymnastics to claim their fourth consecutive Games title. TOM WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Before a sea of red, white and blue flags, Russia pursued their merciless dominance of rhythmic gymnastics by claiming their fourth consecutive Olympic group title on Sunday. The Russian team posted a score of 57.000 points to finish above Belarus and three-time world champions Italy at London’s Wembley Arena, to the delight of the many Russian supporters present. “In London, we had big support and it was amazing so we didn’t really feel that much pressure,” said Karolina Sevastyanova, a member of Russia team. “The whole arena was behind us and there were a lot of Russian supporters.” With Evgeniya Kanaeva having successfully defended her title in Saturday’s individual final, Russia have now won

every Olympic gold medal in the sport since the start of the 2000 Games in Sydney. “It shows that Russian gymnastics is the best and our coaching is strong,” said Sevastyanova’s team-mate, Uliana Donskova. Italy secured the world crown in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and were bidding to claim a first Olympic gold medal, but

they had to content themselves with bronze, eight years on from a second-place finish in Athens. In the final, the five-strong teams perform only two meticulously choreographed routines — one with balls, and one with hoops and ribbons. Russia earned an amazing score of 28.700 for their balls display.

But the Ethiopian team’s tactics were dealt an early blow with Dino Sefir falling well off the pace, as Kipsang reeled in the Brazilian pace setter.

Kipsang, the 2012 London Marathon winner then built up a lead on the peloton, going through the halfway mark in 1:03.15, 16sec ahead of the chasing pack. The Kenyan built that lead up to 30sec on the stunning course, designed to take in as many of the British capital’s main sights as possible. By the 23km mark, a second Ethiopian, Getu Feleke, was beginning to flag and had fallen off the chasing pack’s pace.

LONDON: Usain Bolt arrived at the London Games on a mission for treble gold and duly left with the legendary status he so craved after retaining his double sprint titles and anchoring the relay team to gold. It was the first time a sprinter had defended both the 100m and 200m at successive Games, and the 4x100m relay was set in a world record-breaking 36.84sec to cap a pulsating nine days of track and field. “It’s what I came here to do. I’m now a legend, I’m the greatest athlete to live,” said Bolt. Rarely can there have been a week’s athletics as enthralling and entertaining as that at the London Games. Every session was a sell-out, and the atmosphere was electric, notably on the first Saturday when Britain won three gold medals in the space of 45 frenetic minutes.

Usain could play Twenty20 in Australia Negotiations are underway for cricket-mad Usain Bolt to play in Australia’s T20 Big Bash League, with Shane Warne leading the campaign to bring him to Melbourne. Bolt, hailed by IOC chief Jacques Rogge as the greatest sprinter of all time after three gold medals in London, played junior cricket before turning to the track and has long voiced a love for the game. He said he wanted to play and had spoken to the Australian former Test leg-spinner. “He (Warne) contacted me and asked me about if I am serious and if I really want to do it then he can put in a few words that should get it done,” Bolt told Channel Nine.

The title was the first for the world number two since Miami more than four months ago and marked the third of a subdued season for the former number one Australian Open champion. Djokovic and Gasquet went on court in the evening so as not to conflict with the London Olympic closing ceremonies. “This match was exceptional today, it’s been a long week, a tough week,” said Djokovic, “especially for players coming from the Olympics. COMMUNITY SHIELD City battle back to down Chelsea in fiery clash

IAN BAKER Agence France-Presse BIRMINGHAM: Manchester City underlined their determination to retain the Premier League title as the champions warmed up for the new season with a hardfought 3-2 win over 10-man Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday. Roberto Mancini’s side will kick off their title defence against Southampton next weekend and this was the ideal preparation as City came from behind to win in a fiery encounter including a red card and eight bookings at Villa Park. Fernando Torres had given Chelsea the lead in the 40th minute, but the dismissal of the Blues’ Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic moments later proved crucial. City duly capitalised with fine strikes from Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez (above) soon after half-time turning the game around before Samir Nasri got their third on 65min. Although Chelsea substitute Ryan Bertrand pulled one back 10 minutes from the end with his first goal for the club, City held on to record their first win in the traditional curtain raiser to the English top-flight season since 1972. “It was a great day for the club again. It doesn’t matter what the trophy is, we’ll celebrate it,” City captain Vincent Kompany said. “For the red card, to be honest I was far from the action, all I can say is before that we had more possession anyway. But it will be a tough league this season because you could see the quality Chelsea have”, he added.
